Do you think villain!Julieta or villain!Pepa would react appreciably differently from their canon counterparts if they find out about any variant of grandchildren incest? I'm especially thinking of Isamira and how villain!Julieta might react if she thinks Isabela is hurting Mirabel. What would she do to Isa? And imagine how horrified Mira would be... though, who knows? They're clearly not too hung up on social norms. Maybe they'd be more willing to hear them out before doing anything drastic?

Ahh one of my favorite things about villain!Julieta (and her most morally reprehensible aspect) is that she's totally willing to harm her older daughters if it means protecting Mirabel. Just crank up the favoritism up to 11. No acceptance. I want Julieta seeing Isabela as the ultimate danger to her small daughter and being extremely unforgiving towards her.

I'm thinking about... Julieta refusing to feed her. Or refusing to give her any healing food. She lets her get sick and doesn't hher, and lies about it when the family asks, says her magic isn't working this time, and she knows Isabela can't tell them what's wrong because then they'd have to ask why Julieta would do anything like that - and not only is Julieta physically endangering Isabela but also filling her head with shame and self-loathing, bringing up to the surface all of the inc3st guilt she and Mirabel had been working so hard to untangle, and reminding her of what an immature, irresponsible, selfish coward she's being. But, of course, Isabela had always been out to hurt Mirabel, hadn't she? She used to be so cruel towards her. She still feels terribly guilty over that, and Mirabel tells her it's fine, that she forgives her, that it's all in the past and like a fool she'd dared to believe her but she's never been more than a childish little brat who acted like an airheaded doll in front of family to appease them only to ruin her little sister's life behind closer doors simply because... because she liked the power, maybe? Or did she simply hate her so much she wanted to hurt her in every way possible? She's not good. She's never been "beautiful" or "perfect", it was always a façade. She's a liar. An impostor. It's only a matter of time before they see the real her. They will hate her. Rightfully. She was never deserving of Mirabel anyway. So she doesn't tell them when Julieta poisons the food with ingredients only she is allergic to, and tricks someone else - possibly Mirabel herself - into preparing all of Isabela's portions, to make sure that, if she ate anything, it wouldn't heal her back up. People think Isabela is simply refusing to eat on her own, and Julieta reassures them, tells them she's just nervous, and that she's making sure she's still well-fed, even if she won't take a bite during lunch or dinner, but she's lying. Isabela is starving, and finding food in town stops being an option the day Julieta corners her and tells her she'll have to worry about much worse than just hunger if she dares go get food somewhere else. If she gets hurt, she has to patch herself up - something she never learned how to do. She's not starving entirely though, because Julieta feeds her just enough to keep her functioning on her everyday life - always food made by Mirabel's hands, to add salt to the wound (Julieta asks her if she knows she's eating her sister's food. She asks her if she feels proud of herself. she doesn't). Julieta knows that Isabela still has Alma on her side, and she knows it will put Mirabel in danger to let her know what's going on, so she needs to keep up appearances. She needs to keep Isabela under control and scare her away from Mirabel without raising any alarms in Alma's head.

So, she feeds Isabela only when she does a good job at staying away from Mirabel, and punishes her with hunger if she sees her talk to her. If she wants a wound healed, she's going to have to ignore Mirabel really well, even when she cries on her door, even when she tries to throw paper planes into her window and climb the vines up her balcony. Julieta convinces her that asking for Alma's help would only endanger Mirabel, so Isabela keeps her mouth shut and continues to put up a perfect show for her grandmother. She dances and smiles and offers beautiful performances while feeling her gut twist and strangle itself because her mother caught her making eye contact with Mirabel the day before. She can't let Alma notice her sickness when she's unwell or her general physical deterioration - one time, Alma commented that she looked quite thin, and it freaked her out so much, she didn't leave her room for a day. And, of course, if Isabela ever lets Mirabel know what's going on - if she plants in her mind the idea that Julieta is anything but the safest person in the world - she's going to make sure she regrets it.

The batkids have all fallen in line like Thomas is their superior officer and they've all basically decided Dick is getting thrown on the pyre (because cop) when Jason slowly raises his hand like he's back in school.

Jason, who lives for chaos, putting on the Sad Orphan Eyes that Dick taught all of them how to do, saying "Abuelo, you know I died? The clown who killed me is still alive."

All the other kids jump in with "oh he's right nonno" etc etc "don't worry bambini your nonno will take care of it" etc etc

(and while Thomas and Martha aren't exactly thrilled Jason is a crime lord, he's so much better at it than fucking Carmine. So the boy is ambitious! There are worse things to be. Thomas then slips Jason a fiver when Bruce isn't looking like grandparents do)

my encanto analysis/headcanon that no one asked for

so, i was just looking through some encanto fanart and headcanons and came across this piece (artist: https://mobile.twitter.com/ye_enc):

abuela had triplets - julieta, pepa, and bruno. both julieta and pepa had three kids - isabella, luisa, and mirabel for julieta, and dolores, camilo, and antonio for pepa.

what i noticed is that for each batch of three, each individual falls under a certain category, and it seems to follow by age.

julieta was, as this lovely fanart shows, likely depended on quite frequently for her ability to heal via her cooking. her gift would have been the most useful and therefore she likely would have been praised the most as “the perfect one”.

this, of course, next falls to isabella, who we see this with the most frequently. abuela very clearly is living the life she wished she could have lived through isabella, and is viewed as the perfect golden child by everyone around her.

dolores is a little different, but i believe she still fits the trope. she is basically the physical embodiment of “seen but not heard.” she keeps quiet on the things she knows would upset her family and doesn’t make herself heard, even when she is in pain, whether physical or emotional. she doesn’t tell anyone that she knows bruno has been living in the walls for the ten years he’s been missing; she doesn’t tell anyone about her feelings for mariano, because she knows that will upset abuela and her cousin’s “perfect for the encanto” arrangement; and one can only imagine how loud certain things are to her, that are endurable for us (fireworks, for example).

next are the middle children: pepa, luisa, and camilo. all of them have some kind of pressure on their shoulders. (and - just a fun thing i noticed - while luisa’s literal pressure is the many things she carries, pepa’s pressure is atmospheric pressure, because she controls the weather. but anyway, lol).

all three of these characters are told in one way or another to bottle up their emotions and keep them buried inside. with pepa, we see this very directly as she is constantly told by the other characters (especially abuela) to, as the fanart above shows, calm down and essentially turn off her emotions because of the damage she can cause with her weather powers. this kind of reminds me of the “conceal, don’t feel” thing that elsa had with her gloves. both pepa and elsa demonstrate the same growth throughout their movies, too - learning to accept themselves and their abilities and thus being able to control them instead of being controlled by them - but, i digress.

luisa, by contrast, is indirectly told to keep her emotions at bay. she is treated as something of a useful tool, both by the town and by abuela, and seen in a very masculine light despite her relatively feminine personality. because of this treatment and the expectation that she will always be strong that comes with it, she falls into the same category as pepa.

camilo, like dolores, is a little different, but still fits. we don’t see much of him in the movie, but i imagine he is depended on as being the funny one. if anyone reading this is into k-pop or bts, think of camilo as like the j-hope or the jin of the group. he’s always expected to be funny and smiling, lifting everyone else’s spirits - but who lifts his spirits?

and lastly, we have the youngest siblings - bruno, mirabel, and antonio. they fit into the roll, of course, of the scapegoat, of family disappointments.

bruno was rejected by the town and by his family, seen as a harbinger of chaos and horror, a bad omen - all because he can see the future, something that he obviously cannot control. but, of course, it’s easier to simply blame someone else than accept the truth or take responsibility for your own actions.

mirabel, of course, is treated in much the same way. she is seen as a bad omen, as well, and is quite literally feared to be the one who will destroy the family and the encanto, because of bruno’s vision.

antonio does not quite fit into this category, but i think if he had not gotten a gift, he would have been shunned in much the same way as bruno or mirabel. it can also be argued that his gift isn’t really very useful, and we can see abuela struggle for a moment to think of how they could put his gift to use at the breakfast at the beginning of the movie (”i told them to warm up your seat”).

anyway - this is all to say that each of the siblings in each of the batches of three appears to fill (or almost fill) the same rolls. i’m sure someone else has already noticed this and i’m just late to the party - but i thought it was cool.

Eddie dates a man for the first time, and Buck is completely 'Fine'. This is a preemptive rec because it is one chapter away from completion and I have been saving it to binge in one sitting but knowing Jenwyn and her incredible talent I guarantee this will be worth the read.

Batfam X Encanto AU, with powers decided by their ages (it kinda got away from me at the end)

As the baby of the family, Damian gets Antonio’s animal speaking powers and absolutely is living his best life

Skipping Duke since he has his own powers already, we have Tim as Mirabel and Steph as Camilo. As tempting as it would be to switch them, I think there’s great angst potential in Steph never being sure if Bruce actually values her or just finds her powers useful.

Also angst in Tim being the only one without powers having to work to prove himself and Bruce being terrified as Jason has Luisa’s strength and was still struck down.

Outside of that Jason’s power doesn’t change that much, neither does Dick with Isabela’s powers, just now uses vines to swing around. Cass is a bit weird because she’d have Delores’ power, so now you have a girl who hears everything but can’t understand it. I mean it’d be helpful in the field, but I imagine it would get overstimulating quickly, especially trying to focus on one conversation while she’s just starting to learn English.

Finally we have Alfred, Barbara, and Bruce. I picked a random triplet for each since they’re the oldest, so Alfred gets magic healing cooking, obvs, Babs gets Bruno’s powers to match her Oracle branding (we’re not gonna talk about how this affects the killing joke or how Bruno made prophecies for others but never for himself ok?), and Bruce gets Pepa’s powers.

I mean like in a meta way Gotham was literally made to reflect Bruce's mental state, but what if that was true in universe? What if it's rained everyday since that night in the alley? What if you're trying to fix a city and you can't even fix your own brain? What if you're just making it worse? Worse weather, worse conditions, worse things you're willing to do to get out.

What if you're Batman, with an unreadable face, yet your emotion can be read on a thermometer?

What if you can't feel it in the Watchtower, but the weather warms up when you tell that old Bat a joke? What if the skies clear up when he knows you're flying to him?

What if you're Dick Grayson who can make the sunshine with your smiles? What if you're used to getting rained on when you try to talk?

What if you're Jason Todd, and the rainbow you once made only come out in the reflection on the hailstones he drops every time they mention your name? What if you once wanted nothing but thunder clouds, but now you want lightening to strike at everything but you?

What if you're Tim Drake, holding back a hurricane? Stephanie, reasoning with fog? Alfred, who's given up trying to change him, just grateful when it drizzles instead of snows?

What if you've mastered control as best you could and it's still not enough? What if you're trying to be some sunny playboy when all you want is to be a kid again? Could you keep it from pouring down on everything you love? Could you stop your rain from eroding everyone down?

Why I think the Madrigals believed Bruno to be dead

The adults only speak about him in past tense. "Bruno didn't care about this family". As far as she knows, if he's still alive and not back it means he actively still doesn't care about the family, so why not say that? Félix also speaks in past tense ("You better figure it out, because it was coming for you"). Julieta's "My brother Bruno lost his way in this family" makes sense regardless of whether she thought he'd died or not, but to me it does sound very final. Pepa cannot even hear his name without thundering. With the amount of love she has for him, the thought that he might have made himself a happier life in a town that does not shun him should bring her at least a bit of comfort, but she's inconsolable even after so much time. I'm sure there are more examples of this and if I can think of them, I'll add them in the replies.

The door going dark. Now, we know it stopped being lit because he had decided not to use his power anymore, but it makes far more sense for it to be because he couldn't use his power anymore (because he was dead). Casita, much like Bruno, can tell the future, so she knew he was going to use it again, the vow did not really count for anything. Are you telling me that anytime a family member leaves their room and considers not using their power for a while their door goes black?? It makes a lot more sense for the family to have thought he had died. The same applies for Casita not being able to help inside the room: it sounds like a metaphor for the Madrigals not being able to help Bruno anymore.

The deleted scene. In the "Chores!" deleted scene, Félix talks about a fight Bruno had with the family (possibly even the moment he left the family?). In this scene, Bruno displays actual suicidal tendencies ("I wish I was dead!"), and, when he leaves, his room starts rotting and decaying. This scene was removed in the final movie, because it is clearly too dark for kids, but we have no reason to believe that it is not still canon in the universe, as we can see that his room is actually decaying and falling apart. If a family member tells you they wish they were dead and then disappear leaving no trace, it is not a crazy jump to think they are not still alive, especially considering the next point.

Bruno left behind most of his belongings. We do not know how much stuff Bruno had in the first place, but when he leaves his room after the vision, we do not see him holding a bag (or anything really) and even if it's there, it is definitely not a bag big enough to sustain someone leaving their home for good. The stuff he has in the walls was likely gathered long after his family had stopped searching for him. He also has no money and the social skills of a rat, where was he even going??

The room falling apart. Not entirely sure about this, but I think the characters' rooms reflect somewhat the emotional state of their owners (Isabela's room in What Else Can I Do + if I'm not mistaken, Camilo's room is supposed to change colour based on his mood like a chameleon). This is further demonstrated by the stairs, which had been growing for years before Bruno actually left. This is a bit of a stretch, but I think the family could have seen one of two alarm bells in the decaying room: a) Bruno's room was decaying like him (kinda gruesome, but it makes some semblance of sense); b) it did not change at all for 10 years. I don't think rooms change only when their owner is in them, so Bruno's emotional state supposedly not changing for so long is alarming. But again, this point is the one that convinces me the least.

Dolores. Dolores mentions hearing Bruno in the walls three (3) times, in the movie alone: in We Don't Talk About Bruno, at breakfast ("and the rats talking in the walls") and in All of You. It's been ten years and she still mentions him constantly, so she's probably been talking about it since the very beginning, but no one believed her. So, a child keeps hearing their relative who disappeared without a trace in their family home, without seeing him and with everyone saying it wasn't possible. Logical conclusion? It's a ghost.

The family's reactions to him returning. Alma is the most striking. It takes quite a long time for her shocked face to wear off. Julieta is equally shocked as well, like she'd never expected to see him ever again. It could also be she just didn't expect him to come back. Pepa looks relieved, like she'd been on edge for 10 years and can finally know peace. Why would that be? The fact that he's back does not mean they are going to rekindle their relationship, but it does mean that she gets a new chance to show him she loves him, being the first to run to hug him. Her eyebags also show many a sleepless nights tossing and turning, maybe feeling guilty because she hadn't shown him her love enough and she thought she never could again.

Bonus: "The mountains around the Encanto are pretty tall!" In this scene, after Bruno says this sentence, he makes a weird face, like he's already considered how tall the mountains are and he's trying to understand if Mirabel caught onto that.

Dolores standing near her parents bedroom and A speech bubble with pepa saying AH~ and pepa and Felix are shocked and they ground her for a week so can you write a funny fic about it? ( I asked you too do it because you are very talented and you do it better than anyone I know).

"I love how you have a box of tissues already at the table."

Félix chuckled as he sat down. Pepa gave him a light glare, signalling him to behave. It was their first ever parent teacher conference (at least from the parent's end), and Pepa was a bit more nervous than usual. It was why the room was just a TOUCH windy, forcing the teacher, Mrs. Sánchez, to put on her coat. She was a very understanding lady, never complaining about any of their powers.

"Well, tears happen often in my line of work. Now, I'd like to thank you both for coming, I know it's difficult to make it to things, what with how busy you tend to get."

Pepa gave a light shake of her head.

"Oh it's no trouble. Our daughter comes before any of that."

"That's wonderful to hear. Now, first things first. Your daughter is a DELIGHT to have in the class. She's very smart, and once she's comfortable, she plays nicely with the other children. Genuinely, she's a treat to have in the class."

"Shit, better than me. I was a menace at her age. But with a mother like this, it's no wonder she ended up so wonderful."

The teacher ended up having to take off her jacket as Félix kissed Pepa's hand, making sun and rainbows pop up over her head.

"She has very loving parents. That's uh, actually why I wanted to talk to you both today. You see, we had a project about history. And we thought it'd be cute, to have the kids draw something about someone they look up to in the family. Dolores chose to draw about you two-oh I have an umbrella here."

She gave Pepa the umbrella as soon as she started to tear up. Could she help it? No! Her little baby looked up to them? Oh it was the sweetest thing she'd ever heard! Mrs. Sánchez dug through her desk as Félix tried to ease his wife, just a bit.

"Easy mami, easy. We haven't even seen it yet! How cute is it?"

Pepa didn't know what to expect. But certainly not this. On a piece of paper, Dolores had written 'I hear my mommy and daddy wrestling every night. I think my daddy is winning most of the time, because of the noises mommy makes'. It was paired with a drawing of Dolores by her parent's bedroom, clearly snooping. She even put a text bubble by the door. A simple 'AH!' That spoke more than she herself possibly could. The cold came back again, and Pepa sat there, aghast and in disbelief. And what was Félix doing? Trying not to fucking laugh.

"Oh my god. Oh my fucking god-"

"Félix if I hear ONE chuckle out of you."

"I'm not laughing! I'm f-fine. In my defense though I do win a lot-"

"FÉLIX."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"

Félix was practically shaking from how badly he wanted to laugh. Of COURSE he'd think this was funny. Of fucking course he would. Pepa offered her an apologetic smile.

"Lo siento, Dolores has REALLY been putting her gift to use. She's very nosey, you understand."

"I get it. But it made things...awkward. I had my assistant hang up the drawings in the hallway, and he didn't look at them beforehand so. The children had many questions. One even asked if Félix was a pro wrestler."

"I'm so sorry- can I just step out for a second?"

"Go ahead."

Félix stepped out of the room, and as soon as he shut the door, he just. LAUGHED. Pepa took a deep breath, trying SO hard to keep her temper in check.

"Do you know any single parents?"

"A few. Why?"

"After today, I'm making myself a fucking widow."

Mrs.Sánchez chuckled, before reaching over to hold Pepa's hands.

"Pepa, relax for a minute here. I know this must be embarrassing, but we just have to go forward from here. I'm just asking you remind her to not be so nosey. It's been a bit, problematic. She's also blackmailing a teacher."

"Oh god, is it you?"

"No no, thankfully not. It's a male teacher. Dolores heard he was having an affair, and now she sort of uses it to get whatever she wants."

Pepa felt her grip onto the woman's hand as Félix continued to laugh outside.

"How does she know what that word is?!"

"She doesn't. She just knows when she says it, he lets her have extra recess and no homework."

Oh she needed to pray extra hard tonight, so her ass can hope she DOESN'T pop a vein somewhere.

"I am. SO embarrassed, really."

"I wouldn't be. She's still my favorite kid, and I LOVE her dearly. And I've dealt with magic kids before, don't forget I teach Isabela. And she's no saint either, let me tell you."

That made Pepa feel a BIT better, at least. Mrs.Sánchez pulled her hands away as Félix came in, clearly having had a good laugh.

"Okay, I'm back, it's out of my system. Now we'll have a talk with Dolores. She's a SMART girl, and I feel like she's sort of using it as an excuse to snoop."

"That's all I ask. And don't worry, I'll let her make another drawing for the wall tomorrow, so she's not left out."

"Gracias. Really, we appreciate it."

They shared a hand shake before they walked outside, to where Dolores was sitting at the playground, reading her book. She of course, heard her parents coming, and put her book away.

"Mami, papi!"

Félix dove in for a hug, only to be stopped by Pepa. Dolores immediately shrunk, knowing she was in trouble.

"Uh oh. Is it uh, about the teacher?"

"It's about you snooping, young lady. You're SO grounded, at least for a week."

Félix leaned in a bit to his wife, shrugging.

"Uh, HOW do we ground her?"

Pepa had put her in timeout before, but she couldn't be in the corner for a whole week. She thought about it for a second, fumbling.

"Er...no playing outside."

"Okay, me and papi can get more music practice then!"

"No music."

"Hey, Pepa, we are NOT taking away father daughter time, I put my foot down there."

They shared a glare between each other, and Pepa relented, seeing just how serious he was.

"Okay, fine. Er, no reading books."

"I need to for a book report."

"Uh, okay. No...no reading for fun!"

Félix raised a brow at her, and she couldn't blame him.

"No reading for fun. Seriously?"

"Until I think of something better! Now come on, time to go home."

Dolores shrugged as she grabbed onto Félix's hand, damn near skipping.

"Can I work on my doodle when we get home?"

"Of course you can, mija."

Pepa sighed. She'd figure out how to punish her. Eventually.
