Encantober Day 1: Sunset
Pepa sat down on the hillside overlooking the meadow. Today was easier than usual. She had been tasked with drying out a field that had gotten flooded when the river grew too full. It had been a rainy spring. Not her fault, of course. Okay, maybe some of it was her fault. Her boyfriend, Carlos, had broken up with her, and she took it pretty hard. But not all of it! Not all weather was her fault. She kept trying to tell people, and no one listened…
Thankfully, drying things out didn’t tax her as much as making it rain did. All she had to do was think happy thoughts and the sun came beaming down, strengthened by her gift. Usually, she’d think of her siblings. Or if there was a cute boy that she had her eye on, that worked too. When she was younger, it was animals that did the trick. She had no shortage of happy thoughts. It was the sad ones that were harder.
She’d settled in with her book, opening it eagerly. It was a new book, and she was dying to see how it would end.
A couple chapters in, she felt a shadow blocking the sunlight. Peering up, she saw a guy she didn’t recognize. Someone new, in their town? That didn’t happen often.
“Mind if I join you?” He spoke up.
“Go right ahead.” She folded the corner of her page and closed the book, setting it on the grass beside her.
“Hope I didn’t interrupt you reading.” He sat down next to her.
“No, it’s fine.” She was dying to know what happened next, but this new guy intrigued her. “I haven’t seen you around before. Are you new here?”
He nodded. “My family just moved here. My name’s Félix.”
“Pepa.” She took his proffered hand, shaking it. His hand felt strong, rough. Pepa felt sparks go through her that had nothing to do with her gift.
“It’s nice to meet you, Pepa. I was exploring around and came upon this little meadow here.” He held a hand in front of his face conspiratorially. “To be honest, I needed a break from my little siblings. They drive me crazy sometimes.”
Pepa laughed at the comment. “How many siblings do you have?”
“Five. And I’m the oldest.” He rolled his eyes playfully. “Do you have siblings?”
She nodded. “A brother and sister, but we’re triplets, so no one is really the oldest. Well, Julieta acts like she is, but she’s only like five minutes older. Can’t have gained that much wisdom during that time.”
His laughter was one of the most beautiful sounds she’d ever heard. “Oh, I’m sure she gained so much wisdom. Those five minutes were very important.”
Pepa gasped and shoved him reflexively.
He fell over. For a second, Pepa was afraid she’d hurt him, but he sat up like nothing was wrong. “Hey, us older siblings have to stick together!” He defended himself.
“She’s not-“ Pepa began, outraged, but stopped short at the grin that cracked on his face.
“I’m kidding.” He shook his head good-naturedly. “Lighten up, Pepa.”
Those words struck dangerously close to home. How many times had the other kids told her the same thing? How many times had her mamá warned her to rein in her emotions? She blinked rapidly to quell the tears. Clear skies, clear skies, clear skies…
Félix cleared his throat. “Okay, that was a bad joke. Sorry.” He offered her a sheepish smile. “Anyway…you said you had a brother too?”
“Bruno.” Her voice was flat. She’d managed to stop the spiral, but it always took her a little bit to pull herself out of a funk. “His name’s Bruno.”
“Bruno.” Félix scratched his head. “I haven’t met him yet.”
Pepa barked a laugh. “I don’t imagine you would have. He hardly ever leaves his tower.”
“Tower?”
Pepa gestured towards their casita. It was barely visible from this distance, but one could still make out the distinctive shape of a tower.
“Okay, Bruno has a tower. Why not?”
Pepa appreciated his nonchalance. People weren’t so accepting of Bruno. Granted, Félix hadn’t met him yet, but Pepa had a feeling he’d be different. He was so friendly; she just couldn’t imagine him being mean to Bruno.
“Wait…” Félix appeared to be puzzling something out. “My papá said that’s where the Madrigals live. Are you a Madrigal? Is it true what people say, about the magic gifts?” He sounded genuinely curious, his voice lacking the usual tone of suspicion.
“Yes, I’m a Madrigal,” Pepa said simply, ignoring the second question. “Tell me about your family. I feel like we’ve just been talking about mine.”
Caught off guard by her abruptness, Félix shrugged. “Well, they don’t have magic gifts, but they’re still pretty cool. Most of the time. My papá is named Roberto, my mamá is Antonia, and then there’s my siblings: Felipe…”
If Pepa said she remembered all the names he listed off, she’d be lying. She was too focused on the dimples in his cheeks when he smiled, the excitement in his voice as he told her about all his family members. It was clear he loved them very much, and she found that sweet.
Suddenly, he stopped talking. “Is it just me, or did the sun get brighter?” He shielded his eyes, glancing up at the sky.
Horrified, Pepa followed his eyes. It was true. She’d become so happy, enthralled by his presence, that she’d unwittingly made the sun shine more brightly. “Sorry,” she apologized, rubbing the end of her braid nervously.
“Why are you sorry?” He asked, confused. “It’s not like you control the sun.” He tried to meet her eyes, which bored firmly into the ground. “Wait- do you control the sun?” The realization seemed to dawn on him. “Is that your gift? You control the sun?”
He sounded awed, not scared. Pepa took that as a good sign. “Technically, I affect the sun,” she corrected. “Other weather too. It’s connected to my emotions.”
Her cheeks grew red. Why did she admit that? Félix had a way of disarming her. She was in trouble if he kept going like this.
But he seemed to take it in stride. “What does bright sunlight mean?” He pointed up at the still blazing sun.
“It means happiness.” A thin veil of fog enveloped Pepa, for which she was grateful.
“And the fog?” Félix observed her. “Wait, you’re blushing. Are you okay?” His eyebrows wrinkled concernedly.
She gave a noncommittal shrug. “Whatever I feel visibly manifests as various weather phenomena. My emotions are on full display for everyone all the time.” She swept her hand over her head. “You tell me if I’m okay.”
“Doesn’t seem like it,” he deduced. He scooted closer to her. “That seems like… a lot.”
She scoffed. “You can say that again! Julieta got the most useful gift. She can heal people with her food. And Bruno, he sees the future. What do I get? Here, Pepa; why don’t you get a gift that makes you thunderstorm when you’re mad and rain when you’re sad? That’ll surely help the town!” She huffed. The cloud that had sprung up overhead weighed heavily on her.
Félix studied her. “And makes the sun shine when you’re happy,” he pointed out.
“What?” Pepa was still mired down in her turmoil.
“Earlier, when the sun was brighter, you said it was because you’re happy.” He reached out his hand towards her, placing it on the grass between them. “So it’s not all bad.”
“I suppose not,” she conceded. “It’s still dumb though. And a lot of pressure. You try dealing with the knowledge that the town’s crops depend on how you feel that year.”
“Because you’re so happy you’ll dry them out?”
“Try because if I’m too sad I’ll drown them.” Pepa hmphed. The corner of her lip curved upward though in recognition of his attempt to cheer her up.
“I see.” Félix tapped his chin thoughtfully. “Guess we’ll just have to make sure you stay happy.”
Again, the words she’d heard a million times before came out of his mouth. Once again, they lacked the tinge of cruelty that normally accompanied them. She peered over through her fingers to see him beaming at her. “Good luck with that.”
“I seem to be doing a pretty good job so far. You were happy earlier,” he noted with a smirk.
Pepa couldn’t help the smile that erupted on her face.
“There’s that beautiful smile,” Félix said. “Glad to see it again.”
Was he flirting with her? Pepa couldn’t believe it. Okay, lots of boys had flirted with her, but this one was different. He was special. She could feel it. With a start, she looked up to find the cloud had vanished and the sun had returned to its previous brightness; albeit far lower in the sky.
She cleared her throat. “It’s getting late.” She pointed towards the setting sun. “I should get back home before my mamá starts wondering where I am.”
“Of course.” Félix helped her up. “Wouldn’t want her to think you were out with a boy or something.” His lip quirked into a smile.
Oh, he was definitely flirting with her. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.” She flashed him a coy smile. Two could play at that game.
They walked back together until he reached the street where his family lived. “Until next time, rayo de sol.” He waved goodbye.
The townspeople who were outside later said they’d never seen such a brilliant sunset.

The First Move
[Tired of waiting for their clueless hombres to make the first move, Julieta and Pepa decide they are just going to have to take matters into their own hands.]
“Juli, you have been in here all night. You should come dance, enjoy the party!”
“No gracias, I…I, uh, want to get ahead. If tomorrow is anything like today then I need to be ready.”
From where she was sat on the edge of the table in la cocina, picking at the buñuelo in her hand and putting another piece in her mouth as she watched her hermana knead the dough for her arepas, Pepa frowned as she had a sneaking suspicion there was more to this than she was letting on. For as long as she had known her, so all their lives, she had never seen her turn down the opportunity to leave the kitchen for a couple of hours and have some fun. Not only that, but she adored parties and so there just had to be something going on with her.
Hopping down from the table once she was done eating, she began to make her way across the room to where Juli was standing at the counter and leaned against it, clearing her throat with a smirk when she looked at her out of the corner of her eye. “You know, I just remembered seeing Señor Rojas speaking with Félix and Bruno before I came looking for you,” She told her in a soft voice, doing her best to keep from chuckling at the deep blush she saw bloom in her cheeks. “I don’t suppose that has anything to do with you hiding in here, does it?”
“Ay Pepa, I’m not hiding!”
“Juli, who are you trying to convince? You or me?”
Julieta reached for the tea towel on the counter and used it to wipe the dough from her hands, sighing as she pushed the bowl away from her and turned around to lean against the counter like her hermana. “I act like an idiota in front of him,” She muttered. “I’m not like you, I have no idea how to talk to hombres and when he’s around me I forget how words work and then I start laughing at things that aren’t even graciosa because I get nervous. Not only that, but I can’t dance so I would make more of an idiota of myself if he asked me for one.”
“You…you think you’re the idiota?” Pepa raised an eyebrow. “The hombre fell over air earlier, remember?”
Julieta chuckled under her breath at the memory, reaching up to tuck a curl that came free from her bun back behind her ear. “He may not be the best at…well…life, but he’s still a caballero and so sweet and that’s what I love about him. You can’t deny there are too many hombres in this town who think the world revolves around them. Who think they can put their hands on us without our say so and complain when we aren’t grateful for the atención,” She watched Pepa nod in agreement as she rubbed at her arm. “I really don’t want to marry an hombre like that and I don’t think you want to either. I see the way you smile at Félix whenever he’s around.”
“Huh? No, no, no, I don’t like him like that.” Pepa argued though her face turned bright red.
“Now who’s trying to do the convincing?” Julieta teased. “Admit it, you have it as bad for him as I do Gus.”
Pepa smirked. “He is a bailarina fabulosa…”
“Do you think they know?”
“Oh, believe me, they know. They’re just too scared to do anything about it, cobardes.”
“Well then,” Julieta reached back to start untying her apron. “I guess that means we’ll have to.”
Pepa looked at her with wide eyes. “What do you mean?”
“This is the 20th siglo, I think we can ask an hombre to dance with us if we want to,” Julieta rolled her eyes. “I know I said the thought of dancing makes me nervous, but I don’t mind asking Gus as long as you ask Félix.”
“Okay, deal.” Pepa nodded.
Once her apron was removed and she had covered the large bowl of dough on the counter with the tea towel, Julieta reached for her hermana’s hand and the two of them began to make their way out of la cocina together. For a moment, they stood there in the doorway and scanned the courtyard with their eyes before they spotted both Félix and Agustín standing in the corner with their hermano. “Bruno is going to hate us for this, you do know that?” Pepa leant in towards her sister as she said those words, chuckling and giving her hand a squeeze.
“Ah, he hates us already so I don’t think it matters.” Julieta pointed out.
They shared a look before starting to weave their way through the many people dancing, chatting and drinking in the courtyard, and the three men looked up at them when they came to stand in front of them. Julieta was just about to open her mouth to speak when Pepa dropped her hand, grabbed the can of beer from Felix’s, set it down on the table and began to drag him away from the group. “Pepa, I said to ask not force!” She shouted.
Her hermana shrugged at her and she sighed and turned back to her brother and Agustín.
“Uh, everything okay, Juli?” Agustín raised an eyebrow at her.
“She’s going to ask you to dance with her because she’s irritante.” Bruno grumbled, sipping at his beer.
“You…you are?” Agustín asked, stunned, as he put his beer down beside Félix’s.
Julieta played nervously with her hands for a moment. “Sí. I…I mean, I…I was going to, but you don’t…”
Reaching for her hand, Agustín took it in his and chuckled when she fell silent. “I’d love to dance with you.”
“She can’t dance to save her life, by the way.” Bruno told him.
“Cállate!” She hissed.
“I don’t care, honestly,” Agustín admitted with a chuckle. “Come on.”
She let him lead her further into the courtyard then and he dropped her hand once they found a spot to dance in, bringing both his hands to her waist so he could pull her close while she laced her arms loosely around his neck. Swaying in time to the music, they looked at one another in silence for a little while before she let out a sigh and stepped further into him. “Bruno was right, you know, I really can’t dance.” She said, her voice quiet.
“Is that why you spent half the night hiding from me in la cocina?” He asked.
“Why does everyone think I was hiding in there?”
“Well, were you?”
“Uh, maybe…”
“Why were you hiding from me?” He pressed, brushing his thumb against her side through her dress.
“Because I didn’t want to make an idiota of myself and that’s all I do when I’m around you.” She admitted.
“You do?” He seemed genuinely surprised.
“You never noticed? Gus, I can barely string two words together half the time and I end up laughing because I get so nervous, how could you not notice?” Her brows knitted together. “I thought you thought I was strange.”
He shook his head. “No, I don’t think you’re strange. I think you’re asombroso and muy hermosa.”
Sinking her teeth into her bottom lip, she felt her cheeks burn. “¿Honestamente?”
“Honestamente,” He echoed with a nod. “And if you need a little more convincing…”
He took a hand from her waist and the two of them stopped dancing for a moment, her heart beating slightly faster when he brought that hand up and took her by the chin. Her gaze moved slowly back and forth between his and his lips for a second and she swallowed nervously when he pulled her closer with the hand still on her waist, but then he brushed his lips against hers. It was a quick kiss, so quick she barely had time to respond to it, but when he pulled away she rested a hand on the side of his neck and brought him back down to her. She felt more than heard his chuckle as she kissed him tenderly and it made her smile, her love for him deepening.
When they parted again moments later, their breathing rather heavy as he leaned his forehead against hers and held her to him, they shared a smile and she cuddled against him on instinct. “I have been wanting to do that since the moment I met you,” He somehow breathed while looking into her eyes. “It was well worth the wait.”
“For me too,” She whispered, stretching up to kiss him once again. “Uh…I’m not sure what we do now.”
“For now, we dance,” He told her while his hands went back to her waist. “Everything else will come in time.”
Nodding, she slipped her arms back around his neck and teased the baby hairs she found there as they started to sway in time with the music once more. It was then that she remembered about her hermana and Félix and turned her head to look for them, a smile spreading across her face as she saw them dancing a short way away from them. It had been intimidating, the prospect of making the first move, probably just as much for Pepa as it was for her despite her being the more outgoing one, but she was glad they had found the courage to do so.
Should they have waited for them to do it, they no doubt would have been waiting all their lives.
It was no longer something they had to worry about though and she was sure there were many blessings ahead.
So many blessings.

Encantober Day 20: Vision
*trigger warning for pregnancy mentions and brief description*
Voices floated through the kitchen.
“Ay, I can feel her kicking.” Pepa laughed.
What? Bruno didn’t understand what was going on. Usually he tried not to eavesdrop (he said tried; he didn’t always succeed), but he had to know what was going on here. Shifting his position, he was able to peer through the small crack in the wall.
Pepa was in the kitchen with Félix, her hands resting on…her belly? Was she pregnant again? Now Bruno didn’t claim to be an expert in math, but if they were still the same age, and he was pretty sure they were, wouldn’t that be impossible?
“How do you know it’s a girl?” Félix teased, wrapping his arms around Pepa from behind.
“A mother can tell,” Pepa said smugly.
“Well what if it’s a boy?”
Pepa scoffed. “There’s no way the baby is a boy.”
“You know this for sure?”
Pepa glared at him. “I can’t know for sure. Not the way we did with Lola and Milo. But…I have a feeling she’s a girl.”
Félix held up his hands in defeat. “If you say so, mi vida.”
“I do say so.” Pepa bustled around the kitchen, putting away groceries. She must not be very far along, Bruno observed. She’d gotten huge with the other two. In fact, Bruno had actually wondered if she was having twins when she had Camilo. Looking back, he deserved that slap.
His cheek smarted from the memory. As much as it had hurt, at least he was still part of the family then. Almost five years had passed since his…unceremonious departure…and not a day went by that he didn’t miss them.
“I know it might be a bit early to think about this, but do you have any ideas about names?” Félix had caught Pepa in his arms, swaying her from side to side.
She hummed contentedly. “I have a few. But my favorite is- what about Antonia? After your mother?”
Félix beamed. “I love it. And I’m sure mamá would be honored.”
Pepa smiled at him brightly. “All right, I’ll be right back. Your daughter is playing fútbol with my internal organs.”
Félix chuckled. “Bet she’ll be a hell of a player one day.”
“She better be, with all the practice she’s getting!”
Their voices petered off as they left the kitchen, still basking in the glow of their happiness.
Bruno sat there, stunned. He couldn’t believe it. Pepa was having another baby- he’d have another niece or nephew! -and he wasn’t around for it. When she’d been pregnant with Dolores and Camilo, Pepa had consulted him for a vision to learn the sex of the baby, so she could pick out a proper name. Aside from his sisters, Bruno refused to have this kind of vision for anyone else. Four nieces and a nephew later, and babies still freaked him out. But he loved his family.
The thoughts plagued him for the rest of the afternoon. Pepa had been so sure she was having a girl. Was she right? In Bruno’s experience, her predictions were as good as the weather forecast: only right about half the time. So was he getting a fifth niece? Or would there finally be another Madrigal boy?
He couldn’t help it. He must have been focusing too hard on the question. His eyes flew open, glowing green, as he froze, watching the vision unfold before him.
There was a little boy. He looked about five, Bruno would guess. He had dark skin and eyes, and a mess of curls sticking out all over his head. Was this Félix as a kid? Why would he see that in a vision? No, that wasn’t quite right…his eyes were big, and they sparkled like Pepa’s when he smiled. And he smiled a lot. He was standing…in front of their casita, playing with…if Bruno didn’t know any better, he’d say it was a teenaged Julieta. But Julieta didn’t wear glasses. It had to be Mirabel, who even at five had been the spitting image of her mother.
She looked so beautiful and grown up. Bruno almost choked up seeing it. So if that was Mirabel, this had to be the new baby.
Bruno let out a laugh. Ha. He knew it wasn’t a girl. Pepa only said that because she didn’t want to deal with another baby boy. She’d always said that girls were easier to raise, pointing out their nieces and Dolores. But Bruno wasn’t sure if that was true. Camilo just had a lot of energy and hadn’t learned how to channel it yet. This new kid seemed…calmer somehow.
Suddenly, the vision changed. Cracks appeared on casita, spreading the way they had in that fateful vision that led to his banishment. To Bruno’s surprise, the kid transformed into a toucan, taking flight. Mirabel clung to his feet as he flew around the house. Wherever they passed, the cracks were mended. Finally, he set Mirabel down and landed, instantly turning into a jaguar. Jaguar-kid stalked proudly in front of casita with Mirabel on his back.
The image dissolved into a blur. Bruno blinked repeatedly, shaking his head rapidly. That had been…bizarre, to say the least. His question had been answered- Pepa would be having a boy. But so many new questions sprang up in his head. What was that whole bit where the kid turned into animals and took Mirabel for a ride? And the cracks on the house…was this vision somehow connected to the last one he’d had as a rightful inhabitant of la casa Madrigal?
Bruno shook his head, nonplussed. He guessed this was the kid’s gift. Pepa’s third kid would be able to turn into animals. Sure. Why not? Pepa already had one shapeshifting kid. What was another? Aside from an enormous headache for Pepa, that is. It was bad enough keeping track of a kid that could look like anyone. Imagine having another that could look like anything.
Well, he thought with a pang, that would be Pepa’s problem, not his. Since he hadn’t had any visions predicting his triumphant return from disgraceful exile, he figured he’d be in the walls for the rest of his life; watching his family go through life without him.
Pepa would be so crushed to find out she was wrong. But, on the bright side, Antonio would also be a great name.

Encantober 2023 Day 31: Sunrise
One of Felix and Agustin's favorite things to do was wake up right before the sun came up to watch the sunrise. It was a tradition they had since they moved into the Madrigal home. Sometimes, Bruno would join in after waking up earlier than usual and they'd stay until Julieta wakes up to cook breakfast for the family.
One day Felix, Agustin, and Bruno watched the sunrise together, Julieta noticed them and walked closer to them. She sat next to her husband and the men jumped when they noticed her. Julieta then leaned her head on Agustin's shoulder.
"How are you boys doing?" she asked.
"We're doing alright. What made you decide to watch the sunrise with us?" Agustin replied.
"I've been noticing you three watching the sunrise together for several years and wanted to join, but I didn't want to disrupt your guys' moment. I decided to do it now because I wanted to enjoy the sunrise with you too."
Agustin put his arm around his wife as the four of them admired the blue and orange sky together. With all the years of watching from a distance, getting to watch it up close hit Julieta differently.
"Is Pepa still asleep?" Felix asked.
"Si, I didn't want to wake her up because I know she's going to kill me if I do."
Right on cue, Pepa walks through Casita's front door to see her sister, brother, husband, and brother-in-law sitting together. She sat down next to Felix and put her head on his shoulder. Felix jumped when he felt something on his shoulder and looked over to see Pepa.
"Pepi! We were just talking about you. We thought you were asleep," he mentioned.
"I was, but I had to go to the bathroom and I noticed you weren't in bed next to me. I looked all over the house for you and found you four out here," Pepa explained.
"Mi vida, I just want you to know that this was mine and Gus's time and Bruno decided to join us, so it became our guys time. Julieta just decided to do this with us today. And I'm happy you're joining us now."
Pepa hugged her husband and Felix put his arm around her. "You know I don't mind your guys' time."
The five of them laid down in the front yard and witnessed the sky as the orange slowly turned into more blue. They held hands together as they scooted over to make a circle.
"How does it feel to join us, hermanas?" Bruno asked.
"It feels amazing. I want to do this more often," Julieta responded.
"Can we do this every morning?" Pepa asked.
"We could, but we usually do it once a week so we don't tire ourselves out too much. But I'll tell you what. Next time we do this, we'll wake you up and we can watch the sunrise together," Felix explained.
"I'll wake you up too when we do it again," Agustin added.
Julieta and Pepa smiled as they both gave their husbands the biggest hug they could. There was nothing in the world they would trade this moment for, even if they were going to be a little bit tired in the morning because Alma usually wanted everyone out the door for their morning chores before then o'clock. But at least Pepa, Felix, Bruno, and Agustin could catch up on sleep before the children woke up and Julieta was finished cooking breakfast.
"Do you know what this reminds me of?" Julieta said to break the silence.
"What?" Agustin asked.
"That time when the five of us were watching the sun set after dinner and looking back on our friendship and relationship throughout the years."
"It does! And that moment makes me think of when we first met and became friends and how our relationships budded all those years, and how our love has gotten stronger over time," Pepa explained.
"As much as I love having my guy time, I love this even more because I get to share this time with my sisters," Bruno said.
"Would you love to have it more often with us?" Julieta asked.
"I would love that more than anything in the world."
"Even if your rats wanted to join us?" Pepa asked.
"Oh, I've brought some of them out a couple of times. They weren't too much of fans of being woken up this early just to watch the sun rise."
Julieta and Pepa laughed and hugged their brother together. While most of the village gave him strange looks their whole lives, Julieta and Pepa would not have wanted him any other way.
Julieta, Agistin, Pepa, Felix, and Bruno continued talking and laughing through the dawn until their children peeked through the window of the front door to see their parents and uncle sitting in the front yard, talking and laughing together. The six of them opened Casita's front door and slowly walked up to them.
"Mami? We thought you would be cooking breakfast right now," Mirabel said as she tapped her mother's shoulder.
The adults jumped and looked behind them, to see their children standing in a row. They then looked at the sun to see that the oranges in the sky were turning into more blues. It must already be seven o'clock if all six children were awake.
"Lo siento, ninos, we just found your father's and tio watching the sun rise and we wanted to join them," Julieta explained.
"We'll be doing this a little more often though," Pepa added.
"Well, we are starting to get hungry, and we didn't see you in the kitchen, tia. We were just worried," Camilo explained.
The adults got up from the ground and walked into Casita with their children. They all walked into the kitchen together so they all could talk a little bit more while Julieta cooked breakfast. The adults simultaneously thought that one day, they could include the children in their sunset watching. Not only would they appreciate it, but it could be a great bonding session for all of them. Needless to say, it was the most memorable time of the day.
