There is no "right" or "wrong" way to react to trauma. There is only survival. You do what you can until you can get out and get safe, and that is the only thing that should ever matter. You deserve to be respected for how you cope with your pain. But you also deserve to be respected enough to know you're worth the effort to heal and seek recovery if you so choose.

You didn't deserve to be filmed during your most vulnerable moments. You didn't deserve to have them put on the internet for everybody to see, even if it was "just for friends and family". It's not funny and you're not overreacting for feeling humiliated, upset or uncomfortable because of it.
That goes for the people who initially gave consent as a child. It doesn't matter. Shouldn't have happened regardless, and I hope you can find peace.

which one of these did you believe was normal throughout your childhood:
Parents telling you that you're a financial burden to them
Parents insisting you need to work if you want to live in their house
Parents threatening to kick you out if you don't do as they say
Parents threatening death to you
Parents convincing you that you would die without them
Parents expecting you to know information you've never been taught or shown
Parents convincing you that you're unlovable
Parents telling you that any harm done to you is deserved
Parents not caring if you're sick/injured and shaming you for it
Parents expecting you to not have needs
Parents telling you that you're 'crazy' when you remember something traumatic they did to you
Parents acting like you're not a part of the family whenever is convenient
Being told to keep silent to 'keep the family together'
'What happens in my house stay in my house'
Parents inflicting physical abuse, marks and injuries on you
Parents having the right to do whatever they please to their kid
Parents insisting they must be automatically forgiven for everything
Parents telling you that you're the abusive one if you disobey
Parents throwing rage tantrums and screaming hateful atrocities at you in the 'heat of the moment' then later pretending thats normal and forgivable
Parents being allowed to act immature while children are not
Parents simply 'not noticing' when you have emotional/mental issues
Being suicidal and nobody caring or paying attention to it
Struggling with eating disorders/mental illnesses/disability and only being shamed and blamed for it
Parents insisting that their right to hurt you is above law and reason and that you are the only one who can be punished
Idea that 'everyone has it this hard' and 'you're the only one who is being this badly affected by otherwise normal treatment of children
Being told that it would only be worse for you somewhere else and you're lucky that you're only having 'only that amount of abuse'
Parents comparing their parenting to worse examples and wanting gratitude that they're 'not as bad'
Parents telling you that you'll never amount to anything and undermining everything you've done in life continually
Parents acting like your experience and perspective don't matter, or insisting you don't have the right to one in the first place.
(none of these are normal. this is brainwashing)

To add; "They left out that children aren鈥檛 your purpose in life. They shouldn鈥檛 give your life meaning. That鈥檚 something you should have already had."

Friendly reminder that "I bought you nice things", "I gave you food and a roof over your head" and "I've never hit/physically hurt you" does not justify emotional abuse, neglect or parentification.
And if when being confronted they make you feel guilty and get defensive and passive aggressive saying some variant of "Oh well I must've been such a terrible parent!" and tell you how they bought you nice things for your birthdays and how your basic needs were met, that does not make your feelings and trauma invalid. You're not a bad person or ungrateful for feeling hurt.

You don't need everyone to like you. I understand this can be an overwhelming trauma response to being neglected and otherwise hurt as a kid without the comfort and reassurance of our parents. But please try to remember that your worth is not dependent on how many people can love you. You have something much more important and worth protecting-- your heart and soul and mind and spirit. Not everyone you meet in this world is gonna resonate and vibe with you on those same levels. You've got to get comfortable with the concept of being misunderstood or feeling out of place-- and, rather than fawn to fit in, take that as a sign to find the spaces and people who can better appreciate you for it.

abusiveness and predation is not unique to men. abusive women (and the abuse of men for that matter) are much, much more common than you think. if your support for abuse survivors only extends to women or people who were abused by men, you don't actually support survivors.
so to all the survivors who aren't women, and the survivors whose abusers weren't men: i believe you, and i see you. you deserve to be safe and supported. you are not alone. your pain and suffering matters just as much as others' does. what happened to you is just as awful, and i'm wishing you so much healing and happiness.

i was a child
everything i was, was something you hated
but you always said you loved me
i wish you鈥檇 said you hated me
because that would be easier
than believing you cared
everything you did to me still defines me
all of the pain and the misery
you were the only one i could have trusted
and you used that against me
i was a child
i didn鈥檛 deserve that
