how about the Octavinelle trio with a mer s/o who is a bigfin squid? i imagine their s/o would be stupidly tall, and since they're deeper sea squids they'd be sensitive to light :) s/o standing in the dark corner ominously

These creatures have very little known about them. so I did a bit of research to try and figure it out.

Also warning for this story due to some body horror. Also a bigfin squid just under the cut!

Description

You are a rather shy and secluded mer, deep in the depths of the ocean and swilling using your large fins on your sides, your long arms shifting around to catch any small creatures floating in the water to eat. You have pale white skin with black eyes. The few merfolk interactions you didn't really like due to how they made fun of your weird elbows.

When you came to the surface you were still made fun of for your odd human form. You are abnormally tall at 6’9” so our learned the art of slouching and keeping your head down. Your pale white skin and black eyes weren't too unusual it was your arms and sides. Along your sides were little flaps of skin similar to your very large fins that helped you through the water. Your arms had a second elbow just above where the elbow usually would be. you're able to contort your arms into very unsettling and unnatural shapes due to this. It also doesn't help that your elbows are able to bend both ways. Creating even scarier contortions. You were bullied a lot for this and when you discovered how often humans will cover their arms you started to do so. you trained yourself to lock your second elbow and try to pass it off as normal. At NRC you are happy to leave behind the rude mers at the training camp but it's so scary and way to bright on the surface. you just hope no one will find out about your arms...

Octavinelle

Azul: Unfortunately any student trying to keep their head down means they have something to hide, and something that people want to be hidden can be exploited. He had Jade observe you and was told about your mer characteristics. Blackmailed you into working for the lounge, mostly in the back of the kitchen, since you practically begged him to not have you work with the public. You were an ok worker but very shy. Honestly found your arms super weird and disturbing, stopped any bullying against you since he knows what that's like. After his overblott, he released you and apologized for his actions. He even offered some small discount in the lounge for you.

The first time he saw your mer form was by accident. It was very late and azul usually would use his personal tank to be in his merform, but unfortunately, it was being cleaned thanks to a certain eel twins prank. You shrieked when you both made eye contact. He stumbled back from the pool not expecting anyone else to be there. You try and hide your arms and flee but the pool wasn't too big. He assures you that you are fine, but when you say that he doesn't have to lie to you about it. You know that others see you as weird with your weird arms and huge side fins. He shushes you and recognized that you've been through similar things like him. you both connect over being seen as monsters. To him, you're so interesting, being fairly boneless yet having what equates to elbows. You both don't move fast either and become good friends behind closed doors, venting and helping each other heal from your pasts. The twins still tease you both but will happily torture anyone who speaks badly about either of you.

Jade: oya? seems a little fish is trying to keep their head down and stay unseen? what are you trying to hide he wonders. Thanks to permission from azul he observed and watched you carefully. Finding out that you were a merfolk wasn't too big of a surprise, what surprised him was what type of merfolk you were. Not many deep-sea merfolk are ever seen. And your type of merfolk, even the species of squid are rare to see. He continues to watch you for a bit before revealing himself. you were blackmailed and forced to serve in the lounge, but luckily the back kitchens were somewhat dimly lit and you worked well. despite a few accidents here and there from your strangely long arms. He likes teasing you and seeing you squirm from his comments. once served you up some squid and you looked rather sick.

He obviously saw your merform when he was stalking observing you. He honestly thought you were interesting. the large fins along your side were something he has never seen on any mer and the strange elbow-like spots on your arms were interesting. Does experiments with your arms and gets morbidly fascinated at the crazy contortions he is able to push your arms too. may or may not have taken a bit off of one of your tentacles when he decided to swim with you in one of the octavinelle pools.

Floyd: Honestly thought you were so boring since you were always so shy and covered up. Once Jade revealed that you were a mer then he was interested. called you little clam. Likes to poke and prod at you to try and see how you would react. He pestered you a lot when you were forced to work in the kitchen. When he was told about your arms he immediately grabbed them and you freaked out and used an impressive amount of strength to throw him back and run away. He liked that!

He chased after you to where you ran away and saw you out the octavinelle windows into the water around the dorm, followed you and you elbowed him back. He laughed at your elbows and noted how he's never seen a bigfin squid! he likes to poke at your big fins and laugh at your elbowed tentacles. He's mean but he will defend you if anyone decides to mess with you, only he's allowed to mess with big fin squiddy! Otherwise, he gets rather bored with you and even just ignores your presence, you like those days.

this won't be a full info dump because i think that would somewhat restrict my dynamic of them if i put it all into words (if that makes sense) ;;;

and i realized i lowkey dont have a coherent timeline for them (yet); i just put them in random scenarios of what i think would be fun at the moment

to make up for it i'll also put a silly self-indulgent sketch dump all below ;;;

I JUST REALIZED I DRAW THEM MAKING EYE CONTACT A LOT (bc something something there's a level of trust that jamil wont use his snake whisper on yuu anymore)

okay now for some random jamiyuu dynamics/hcs/lore

yuu fell first -> yuu lost feelings (bc why would you trust someone who took advantage you) -> ✨ then something happened ✨ -> jamil fell next but harder.

highkey disliked each other -and showed it- in the beginning bc of the whole scarabia drama; then an -accidental- act of service got them to think differently about one another. like "holy shit maybe they're not so bad after all???"

extremely slow burn.

very competitive with one another which then bled into their "flirting" / affectionate acts when they eventually became closer.

basically: “sweetheart” but rivalry -> “babe” but platonically -> “bro” but romantically pipeline.

(“are you flirting or starting a fight”)

yuu kinda throws around “love you” a lot, especially to her close friends; so -during their “platonic” stage- for some reason, jamil was the only “friend” she has not said this to. but it’s okay it’s not like jamil had referred to her as the “f-word” (friend) anyway.

had a mutual agreement that their romantic relationship is temporary because of yuu wanting to go home; they’re just going to “try it out” “no hard feelings”.

yuu made jamil promise to never use snake whisper on her ever again.

jamil: personal beef w/ bugs + afraid of them; yuu: personal beef w/ bugs (w/ a few exceptions) + not afraid of them, just generally pissed at their existence.

dancing and music lowkey became one of their love languages.

kalim genuinely became one yuu’s best friends because of how much they hit it off. jamil always third wheels them no matter the circumstance.

yuu loves grim more than jamil; jamil knows this very well. and so does grim.

With Floyd looking after you, you'll never go hungry. He's always ready to cook something delicious for you. It doesn't matter what time it is. It could be three in the morning and he will willingly throw himself into the kitchen to prepare something for you if you say you're hungry. Floyd actually gets into the habit of waking up much earlier than you do just so he can get started on preparing an entire feast of breakfast foods. If you're still asleep by the time he's finished, he'll bring the breakfast to you on a tray, and he'll lean down to wake you with the same enthusiastic phrase, sometimes whispered but often times exclaimed: "Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey, shrimpy!"

Floyd loves to cook for you. He loves to watch you enjoy his food when you eat. He loves to feed you if you'll allow it, and he loves to share foods with you. He's always trying new recipes because he's never satisfied with settling into a routine, but if there are specific meals you really enjoy he doesn't mind preparing them over and over. Anything is fine as long as it makes shrimpy smile. That's what's most important.

Sometimes he ends up just admiring you while you eat, which means he might not even pick up anything for himself. He's always beaming at you, his eyes so filled with fondness and mirth. Floyd just hums happily while he observes shrimpy. If you offer food to him, he'll gladly accept it, eating it right from your fingers or from the fork without any apprehension.

If you still aren't very comfortable around Floyd and try to avoid eating in hopes that it might convince him to let you go, Floyd will become so dejected. Isn't the food he makes good? Why are you hardly eating anything? You should eat because eating good food always puts a smile on his face and he wants you to smile. Good food will make shrimpy smile, right? You might think Floyd will force-feed you or threaten you to eat, but he actually stops eating altogether. It doesn't seem to bother him, the lack of food and not being able to enjoy the foods he likes. He still cooks for you, but he never partakes. If you ask him why he's doing this, he just shrugs and casually answers with, "Cuz shrimpy's sad and I wanna know how shrimpy feels, so I won't eat a thing until shrimpy's feelin' better."

He's very stubborn about this, but it eventually succeeds when you notice how determined he is to prove this point and to make you feel comfortable. Floyd's logic is that if he suffers alongside you he can better comprehend your emotions and interact with you. You might feel bad to see him like this, or you might warm up to him knowing he's so willing to feel your pain in this way. You'll end up eating your fill and he'll be so overjoyed to know that you're starting to warm up to him and his food. He wouldn't hurt shrimpy, so there's never anything dubious in his meals. It's just made pure with his affections for you.

Floyd likes it when you help him prepare meals, acting as his sous-chef when you dice fruits or chop vegetables or mix ingredients together. He always lets you lick the batter from the bowl and the spoon if he's made dessert. Cooking with Floyd is a very energetic, upbeat activity. All sorts of noise fills the kitchen space: the sounds of food being prepared, the sounds of you and Floyd moving about in the kitchen, and the sounds of conversations the two of you share while working side by side. He likes these moments the most because everything feels so natural and alive. Floyd doesn't do well with silence, so he's always glad when you open up more and talk to him. Willingly talk to him. Floyd never forces you to do anything you don't want to, though if he's in a mood and really wants your cooperation he'll pout and grumble about it like a child. Floyd's just happy to live in peaceful comfort with his shrimpy, so it doesn't matter what you do as long as he knows you'll always be here with him.

What got you interested in gargoyles?? Do you have any fun facts about them to share?

Now, I am glad you asked.

I've always liked gargoyles because they remind me of myself: Something people fear, but that is actually very useful and benevolent towards humans. You see, they are the protectors of the building: They stop it from eroding or getting filled with water by draining all of it away. They are also believed to protect from evil spirits, even if some think they ARE the evil spirits.

They originated in the 12th century in northern shaftlands, in the city of flowers(irl: northern France and parts of England). The name of the gargoyle comes from the french word gargouille, which is also it's name in that language. They're usually carved in stone or marble and situated on gothic architecture (which originated in the 12th century as well, and in the same place and lasted until the 16th century.)

But be careful to not confuse them with grotesques- gargoyles have a use, grotesques are only there for decoration. Grotesques are mere useless statues, yet people mix them up so often... I don't see why they don't educate themselves on the subject.

Gargoyles are typically long in appearance, with often bat wings and demon-like traits. After all, they need to be intimidating to ward off bad omens.

Would you try doing a music or movie from the prefect world? Cause we have a certain song.... that depict the main character in villain one and while yes you still be villain, you will get the lead role. Not to mention both you and the main character are both blondie. Before you say something, we need the lead to feel anguish and betrayal before hand and only be villain in the last minute of the song (*ehem* hitoshizuku *ehem*). If you worried about copyright, remember this is from another world or you can just say that inspired or something something from the song.

I might, yes, since it is an intriguing idea.

I would not do a movie, as I am not looking for any movie roles currently... But if it was a music video, I think I would be able to fit that into my schedule. Though I would probably postpone it till I graduate either way, simply so I can put in more time.

Though I would rather not play a villain role, if it is the lead... Then I would still be a hero of sorts - as I am the lead - and I would be able to perform the whole time, wouldn't I?

Hopefully Jade gets isekaid with him. If he is, he will pretend to have a leash on his wild brother. I say pretend, because the moment Floyd sees you, Jade will suddenly stop caring about restraining him, and will decide to explore this world's flora and fauna instead.

Floyd gives zero shits about this world. All he knows is that he can feel you in it, and he has to find you. He'll run the whole way, no matter where he spawns in. He'll sprint towards you, and your poor, human self isn't gonna know what hit you when a wall of man bowls you over.

Stop screaming! He's trying to love you!

If he spawns in with Floyd, half of his time is going to be spent being angry. He knows you're here, but he also has to keep track of his brother who couldn't care less about finding his twins favorite "fictional" character. It's slow progress and it may take him a couple weeks to finally reach you.

Whether he spawns in with Floyd or not, he's going to orchestrate a meet cute between you two. He can't expect you to be thrilled if he swooped in and knew everything about you. So he waits.

One day some asshole accidentally knocks into you, and you nearly fall into the busy street. Luckily two strong arms wrap around your middle and drag you to safety. He asks if you're alright, and insists on taking you for a tea to calm your nerves…and the rest is history.

How interesting….this must be your world! There is no need for him to even process the move. He's traveled many places in his lifetime. This is just a new place to add to his scrapbook!

He also isn't going to rush into a relationship with you. Once he finds you, he's going to make you fall for him. He'll play off his delightful scamp tendencies, and his charming character, and make yu head over heels.

One day you'll confess your feelings for him, and he'll act all surprised. But deep inside he's celebrating another victory for General Lilia, mastermind of the King's army.

You won't even know he's here for a while. He can't be sure if this "move" is permanent or not, so he's going to establish himself. It won't be very hard with his unearthly looks, and winning charisma.

By the time he comes to find you, you'll know who he is. He'll befriend you, and perhaps you'll even confess to him.

And of course he'll say yes. He feels a little bad that he knows everything about you, and you just think he's some random guy who got famous overnight, but it's easier to believe than the truth. Maybe he'll tell you someday. But only if he figures a way back to Twisted Wonderland.

He is in no hurry to find you. Yet. First he wants to explore your environment, figure out how his prey's your environment is so he can understand the survival tactics you use. Once he has those, he can ignore them all.

Now, just because he waited, doesn't mean he's going to do what some of these boys do, and get to know you so you don't freak out.

Nah. What you get is a man in a hat spouting a speech at you about soulmates and true love, and how he can provide for your future life living in a mansion in the woods, with a farm, and ten dogs, and thirteen kids that he just found somewhere….

We haven’t played it, and to be honest I doubt that we ever will; it really isn’t our cup of tea. That being said, we do have some sketches of genshin characters lying around that I drew for our friends who are into the game. So, here are Scaramouche (who is the one character that intrigued us the most), Wriothesley (god that name) and Freminet!

Explanations ahead (slight spoiler warning)

Tier 1:

everything is self-explanatory, I think

Tier 2:

Haruhi = the protagonist of Ouran High School Host Club. She's a girl who dresses up as a boy (correct me if I'm wrong) and many players who have a female MC consider theirs to be like Haruhi. [EDIT: Thanks for the anon pointing out that I misspelled the name!]

Tier 3:

self-explanatory

Tier 4:

A fair amount of people headcanon Vil as a trans woman because he presents androgynously/feminine and doesn't care about gender roles. This has also caused discussion in the fandom because breaking gender roles ≠ trans.

Tier 5:

People sometimes wish TWST was more like a dating sim and had character/dorm routes.

Some people headcanon that Silver is based on Prince Philip (from Sleeping Beauty) and/or is a prince himself. I haven't played all of book 7 yet (only the parts out in the ENG server) so idk if the theory has been proven right.

Lilia is old and hints at dying soon.

Hot NPCs, such as Deuce's mom and Sebek's grandpa.

Ace and Deuce have expressed interest in Yuu at various points in the game.

Genshin VAs: Leona/Alhaitham, Silver/Kazuha, Idia/Razor are the ones I can think of

Tier 6:

A beastman (I think it was Jack) has stated that he has problems talking to animals, and Ruggie's talent at it is considered something special.

The tweels are considered intersex by some due to eel anatomy (I'm no eel expert).

Kalim is considered the real villain by some due to never really bothering to help Jamil.

Epel's backstory/attitude has many elements that a fair amount of trans men relate to.

There are theories that Lilia and Sebek are twisted from Peter Pan characters. I'm unsure about Silver, but I think I've read something about him being from another movie, too!

Tier 7:

Some people headcanon that Ace has experienced domestic abuse.

There's a theory that Ace will betray Yuu.

Cater has two sisters who boss him around, which is a resemblance to Cinderella.

Malleus might have two pps because well... dragon.

Epel and Deuce had a whole ass beach date. Deuce constantly cares for him and broke the school rules in order to make Epel feel better. Their scenes together (the settings) looked straight out of a shoujo manga. If Epel were a girl, this ship would be considered canon by most.

I'm not sure EXACTLY which languages Jade's VA speaks, but I do remember that he knows German.

In one of his Halloween vignettes, Ruggie — as opposed to Lilia — has indirectly expressed that he has no interest in romance/relationships.

Adding onto the Silver theories, in 7.6, Yuu and Silver were feeling cold and sick from the magical energy around Maleficia’a castle and Lilia mentioned too much magic could be poisonous to humans.

I wonder if being under a spell for 400 years just wrecked havoc on Silver’s body and, although he is very loved, the effects of this curse could permanently affect him and he has to accept it does not make him inadequate, its a disability he has to cope with

Yes, Lilia does say that in 7-88! According to him, excessive magical power is healing to fae (as just being in the mountains starts to mend his own wounds sustained from battle), but may be harmful to humans. Yuu and Silver specifically have dialogue which indicates they are chilled to the bone and feeling unwell. The magic swirling around those mountains makes them difficult for humans to scale, hence why the Silver Owls cannot invade Black Scale Castle and why Yuu and co. were ordered to flee there for safety.

It’s possible that continuously being under the effects of a spell has changed Silver’s body, but I wonder if it really is permanent since Lilia mentions the magic could have weakened over time and it seems to only be “excessive” magic that harms. (Although guess even then, the damage the spell has done would still be there). I bet the TWST word has like… magic scientists that run the experiments on cursed lab animals and pieces of fruit to observe the effects of magic over time (since using human participants might violate ethical codes). Then they could run the numbers and determine the acceptable human magic tolerance levels or something.

It’d be interesting to see TWST to go down the route of “Silver has to learn to live with his narcolepsy” 🤔 I believe a lot of us (myself included) were hoping that Lilia’s “true love” is what would be able to break Silver’s curse (and Silver would finally adopt “Vanrouge” as a surname), but thinking about it more… it’s odd that Lilia is now at a state where he seems to genuinely care for his adopted son, so the fact that Silver is still sleepy is strange. There may be weight to your theory yet, Anon!

Hello!! I followed you for your absolutely amazing Twisted Wonderland comics (thank you for making them, by the way-) but I saw you posting about something called Ride Kamens? Ride Kamens is still doing prerelease marketing and isn't out yet; it's set for "early summer 2024", so a bit yet to go! similar to Twst, it's a mobile game about anime boys loosely based on an existing franchise (Kamen Rider), although it seems like it's going to be more standalone/won't require familiarity with Rider going in.

the (very) basic premise is that your player character has just taken over their late father's role as a secret agent, supporting the city's superheroes by running a secret base disguised as a cafe (plus you have a personal butler for some reason) (the reason is because it's amazing). you also have to help the heroes regain their lost memories, and it looks like it'll have a bit of a route/choice aspect there (not romance, just different endings to the character episodes depending on what you do). the details are kinda hard to tell at this point but the characters seem like a really fun bunch; there's definitely big "idiots with emotional problems" energy which I am extremely into.

all the official info is in Japanese only at the moment, but here's the website and the ride_kamens twitter! (though the twitter is sort of overtaken by posts about the AnimeJapan exhibit right now, whoops.) and I believe some people are already planning on doing translations for it too? lots to look forward to! :D

Jade and Floyd as a Ghostface duo who terrorize you and your group of friends, while hiding in plain sight. You think you managed to finally incapacitate the tweels, but out of nowhere another Ghostface shows up and kills your last reminding friend. He unmasks himself and it’s Azul, the student council President

Or Epel…whose farm you and your friends take refuge at after your van runs out of gas. His family takes pride in their prize apple orchard, and they find your friends’ obnoxious and boisterous airs to be annoying. But not you. Epel thinks you’re so sweet and gentle. You don’t make fun of his accent and don’t laugh at his stature like on of your stupid friends did. Epel thinks you’d be a perfect little farm wife, while your friends would serve as the perfect fertilizer for the orchard, a recipe that has been passed down through the family for ages.

Or…that strange horned man that shows up in your dreams. You have no idea who he is, how you were able to conjure him up in your imagination, but it seems he shows up every night to simply relish in your company and dance with you in the foggy dreamscape. Your friends dream of Malleus too…right before the dreams turn into nightmares, and the brutal death they experience in the dream somehow kills them in real life.

AAAAAAA and maybe it's a school you go to that is full of the wealthy (so essentially NRC without the magic), so it absolutely rocks the student body when students start going missing and turning up dead in brutally efficient ways. How is it possible??? The affluent neighborhood is known to be safe. No one would ever suspect perfect Student Council President Azul Ashengrotto, who only ever has everyone's best interests in mind. >_< thinking about Zuzu killing out of revenge. He's got a list of all of the people who bullied him and you're on it, but as your friends start to die one by one he sees you soften (mostly out of fear) and suddenly you're not that same bully who tormented him all throughout his childhood. He's starting to get attached. orz

Prompt: Can you do headcanons about twst dorm leaders with a female s/o who is magicless and can use glyphs magic from the owl house?

Riddle would likely show some disbelief at first, as this breaks common rules in magic. And being someone who loves rules, your ability to use magic despite being magicless makes him uncomfortable.

He also can't believe that you, his girlfriend, had not told him this before. Why is he finding this out so late?

It would take him a little while to get used to the fact that people don't need to have magic abilities to use magic. After he accepts this, he would be interested in learning the history behind glyph magic. Riddle would also be curious about glyph magic versus traditional magic.

A part of him is relieved to see you using magic. At least you can defend yourself when he is not around.

When Leona teased you for being magicless, he didn't expect you to draw unusual shapes in the air and summon flames near him.

No matter how many times you explain to him how you can use glyph magic, Leona can't wrap his head around a magicless human being able to use magic. To him, that's the same logic as a bag of salt with the label 'salt-free.'

However, Leona is fascinated with glyphs as they are nothing like the regular spells he is accustomed to.

If you are up for it, the prince wants to have a magic fight with you. He won't hurt you in any way, but Leona wants to see how glyphs hold up against his magic.

Malleus didn't care if you couldn't use magic, but he was not expecting you to summon two large stalks surrounded by thorns with a flower blooming on top. The sight reminded him of Briar Valley.

Like many others on the list, he is curious to learn the origin of glyphs and how you, his magicless girlfriend, can use magic. He also wants to know if this is common in your world.

Malleus is now curious to learn how many different types of magic exist. He might be the most powerful mage in that world, but he is still interested in learning more abilities. Maybe he will one day become the most powerful mage in the universe.

However, when you tell him about advanced glyphs, Malleus is a bit wary. If someone with bad intentions learns some of the advanced glyphs, it could pose a huge problem for the world.

Impressed. He thinks you are like a female lead in an anime who is severely underestimated until an incident causes her to unleash her wrath. Then, everyone suddenly thinks highly of her and wants her attention.

Idia wants to learn the strength and history of glyph magic. His family secretly protects and watches over the world in a sense, so he needs to know about a new type of magic. Just in case it causes any trouble in the future.

If you want to learn advanced glyphs or even create new spells, Idia will be more than happy to help (after some convincing). He has the technology to put in simple glyphs and let the computer/AI create new glyphs for you. Who knows, maybe with Idia's help, you might become the strongest glyph user to ever live.

The first time he saw you use glyph magic, he looked like a kid in a candy store. It was the most mesmerizing thing he had ever seen.

Unlike the others, Kalim doesn't need an explanation of how you can use magic without being able to use magic. All he cares about is the pretty lights, plants, and ice the glyphs can create.

If you can use advanced glyph magic, Kalim would love for you to teach him how to make it snow. He wants to make it snow for his siblings back home just so he can see their smiles and hear their squeals of delight.

He is surprised by your ability to use glyph magic but is a bit upset that you didn't tell him earlier. Vil has the same question as many others on this list: how can a non-magic user use magic?

Since he admires beauty and grace, he loves to see you elegantly create the strokes of the glyphs. Even more, he loves seeing the spells, especially the light orbs. Vil finds the orbs to be beautiful and soothing.

Most of all, Vil would be proud of you for being able to find a way to wield magic despite not possessing the ability naturally. He admires your will, creativity, and dedication.

Wait, didn't you say you couldn't use magic? Then, how are you able to use elemental magic? He has read countless books but has never come across this type of magic. Azul is intrigued and confused.

He will ask you countless questions. What are glyphs, and how do they work? Can anyone with a glyph use magic with it? What magic can they be used to perform? How did you learn to use them?

Azul will definitely ask you to teach him. If he can use magic without touching his internal reserve, this could give him an advantage in many situations.

Not to mention, this sounds like a good opportunity to make money. Cue, rubbing hands together with a somewhat sinister grin.

I'm glad people are enjoying my AU! Shout out to @writingforatwistedworld, whose own Self-Aware AU inspired my own.

You assumed that everyone who ever played Twisted Wonderland had two things on their isekai bucket list; attending a feast at Scarabia to try Jamil’s cooking and being invited to an Unbirthday Party at Heartslabyul to try a sweet made by Trey. Now getting invited to a feast at Scarabia was ridiculously easy. One day you walked up to Kalim and shouted, “Omg, look at that cloud, it totally looks like a pony. We should have a party.” Kalim enthusiastically agreed. You worried a little that Jamil would corner you and chew you out for such blatant manipulation, but luck was with you, and he only gazed at you with interest from across the room.

In fact, so many situations in NRC seemed to just go your way that you wondered if you had some sort of “main character” protection that prevented anything from going really really wrong with your plans. If that was the case, then you reasoned, you could be bold and try to get the Red Ruler himself to invite you to an Unbirthday Party. Plus, you’d already tried to hint to Ace and Deuce about it, but Ace would only complain. “Come on, Prefect, you don’t want to hang out with all those guys. Isn’t it better when it’s just us alone?”

You did feel a little guilty about going behind your friend’s backs on this matter. Especially with how shaky the relationship was between Ace and Riddle, who always seemed locked in some eternal competition over…something…when you were around. You’d never quite worked that one out. You suppose there are just nuances to things that the old TWST game couldn’t convey. You could always feel the tension between them though, whenever you were in the room. But if you were going to betray friendship for anything, it might as well be cake.

Your opportunity came sooner than you expected. The very next day, you encountered Riddle carrying a stack of books back to the library. You felt very much like Azul when you ran up to him and offered to help him carry the load (for a price, ha ha ha) back to the library. He looks at you startled when you offer but slowly a red tint creeps into his face. You start to worry if you’ve really messed up and are about to get one of Riddle’s famous outbursts when instead he stammers in agreement. “I..I don’t really need your assistance. But…but if you’d like…I’d certainly be glad for YOUR company.” You give a sigh of relief and accept a portion of the books, you felt like you narrowly avoided a disastrous hit to your plans.

You attempted to chat him up on the way to the library, but each lighthearted question or joke was met with a short and serious response. You realized that you really didn’t understand Riddle much at all. It was like there was a difference in status you couldn’t overcome to get to where you were friends. Even after the Overblot incident (which you very reluctantly took your place in), Riddle seemed to treat you with a nervous reserve. You felt like it was the sort of relationship you’d have with your boss or a celebrity or something; like he was too afraid to be himself so he kept a façade of formality over all his interactions.

Even so, when you set the stack of books down on the librarian’s desk, you had really expected a friendly invite to the Unbirthday party next Tuesday. I mean, come on, you had helped him lug that stack of books all the way here; that had to be worth something, right? Instead, he merely looked at you and fidgeted nervously still with the slight flush in his cheeks. You wondered mildly if he was getting sick or even if he could get sick. Do game characters get sick except for random romance events? And this wasn’t even that sort of game so maybe no one gets sick here at all. You tried to remember if any of the NPC’s in your class had ever failed to attend class due to sickness but were roused from your thoughts by a small voice, “I guess I should go then.”

“NO!” you shouted, the loud sound echoing off the library walls. You wince at the volume, but Riddle hardly seems to notice, instead he looks at you wide eyed and silently. Finally, you remind yourself that you have main character energy and boldly grab his hand and announce, “You are looking like you could use some air. We should take a walk somewhere.” Then you stride off, forcing him to follow by tugging on his hand. He follows you and then quickly increases his pace to walk beside you while, surprisingly, increasing the pressure on your hand. You smile, he probably never had friends to walk with as a child. It’s been ages since you held hands with your childhood friends for a stroll, but you were happy to humor him. So, you give him a small smile and ask, “Where should we walk.”

He hesitantly suggests, “The rose maze at Heartslabyul is lovely this time of year.” You smile at him brightly and say, “What a great suggestion, I’d just LOVE to spend more time with you at Heartslabyul.” At this, he looks at you with an adorable smile and gives your hand another squeeze. Then he breathlessly remarks, “Well, well then…shall I lead the way?” And so he does, taking you deep into the rose maze. He provides some commentary on certain points of interest (the hedgehog pens, the croquet field) until you arrive at what he announces as the Tea Garden. Your breath rushes out as you lay eyes on the familiar background from your old game. If there was ever a place to lay a hint on him, this was it.

“Wow, its so beautiful here,” you begin in mock innocence, “I really wish I had more occasions to come here.” Riddle looks at you and then seems to get an idea, “Ah yes, yes! Of course, you should feel free to walk the gardens whenever you like, Prefect.” Ok, that wasn’t exactly what you were going for; time to hint harder. “Oh, but I’d be so lonely here by myself. Maybe, if there was a reason to come here with you. I confess I’d like to spend more time with you, Riddle,” finishing up your statement with a coy look. You see him mouth ‘confess’ to himself over and over, while you silently urge him to put it together and invite you to the damn Party already.

“Well…well,” he hesitantly begins, staring deep into your eyes, “if that is how you truly feel, how can I say no?” You smile radiantly at him, SUCCESS! Seeing your smile causes him to smile at you in return. He squeezes your hand once again and says in a much more confident voice, “Yes, well why not? If this is your choice, then why shouldn’t I ask you to tea? Would you please join me next week? We can have tea and I’ll help you study for your history exam.” ‘Bonus,’ you think as you heartily agree.

Only one thing bothers you when you think back on it later. Why would you study for your history exam? That exam was on Monday and the Unbirthday Party was on Tuesday. It was strange to study for the next exam the very day after taking the previous one. You just chuckle and chalk it up to being Riddle and his crazy studious nature.

All that night, Riddle lay awake in bed, unable to sleep. How had this happened? He hardly knew. The Player (THE PLAYER) had confessed their love for him and asked to join him on a date. Now technically, it was against the rules for the inhabitants of Twisted Wonderland to interact with the Player in that way, but this was one rule that even Riddle was willing to break. He couldn’t wait for Sunday to arrive and your very first date.

You remembered the first day you attended class in Twisted Wonderland. You’d been wildly excited to attend classes (about magic!) and see all the characters from your favorite game. That ended at lunch. You’d been in line, waiting for your turn to buy a sandwich, when you’d heard an unsettling voice behind you, “Hee hee, you’re so short, I’mma call you Shrimpy.” You’d turned to look over your shoulder carefully and met the mismatched eyes of Floyd Leech. Only for a moment before he smiled and all your attention belonged to those sharp, pointed teeth. It was then that you realized the appeal of a character was not the same in a game, where you were safe behind a screen, as it was in real life. In real life, a dangerous mafioso eel is actually rather intimidating to stand in front of in a line.

For that reason, you feel rather strange about the possibility that you’d one day meet Malleus Draconia. Before the Floyd incident, you’d been excited to be ‘that student’ the one who wasn’t at all afraid of him and you’d just become super friends right away. Only, now you wondered if you’d actually cower silently or join the ranks of the many nervous NPC’s that dash out of his way in the hall. You wonder how much credence to put into the mysterious aura TWST claimed for him to have.

It remained only a thought in your head until the day you turned a corner in the hall to see the infamous Diasomnia crowd coming down the other end of the hall. It was immediately obvious that, yes, Malleus had quite the ominous aura. You might have stood silently in the hall and let him turn toward the third year’s classrooms without saying a word except, you seemed to also have some strange aura as an isekai’d student. Students backing away from the imposing Diasomnia guards would suddenly become aware of you and stop, unsure of which way to turn. Before long, the entire hallway was at a stand-still. The only change was that the Diasomnia students had become aware of you and were watching with keen interest.

You cursed your fate in TWST, the game seeming to insist that you be the main character in each awkward situation; the decision of how to progress the route entirely left to your own designs. “Um,” you begin awkwardly, “How wonderful, I had been meaning to talk with you Malleus?” You cringe at how your statement ends up being more of a question than a request. It has the desired effect though; students look back and forth between you in awe and then quickly empty from the halls. In a short time, only you and the four students from Diasomnia remain.

Malleus turns curious eyes to you and enquires, “You wished to have words with me, Child of Man?” Here all your daydreams fall apart; at no time during all your earlier visions of talking to Malleus did you actually plan something to say to him. You stare at him, wide eyed and then feel your mouth open and were horrified when words emerged, “Gargoyles. I just love ‘em.” Malleus’s eyes open wide and then he smiles slightly, putting his hand to his mouth, as though pondering that deep wisdom, “Is that so?” You nod dumbly, “Oh yeah, I wish there was like a way to learn more about them…”

The way his eyes lit up in delight erased any uncertainty you had been feeling. You felt all your misgivings about him evaporate; he wasn’t the fearsome Malleus Draconia, he was your friend Tsunataro! You smiled at him and the others, genuine warmth creeping into your expression. Lilia looks back and forth between you and then smiles knowingly, “Well boys, why don’t we just move along and let these two talk, hmm?” Then he makes shooing motions at Silver and Sebek to herd them down the hall, pausing to give you a wink before following. You decided that Lilia was as strange in person as he was in the game; who winks at someone the first time you meet?

You turn your attention back to Malleus and are shocked to find him right at your side. How can someone that large move so quietly? You resist the impulse to back up and look up into his eyes instead. He chuckles, “My, you are a brave one.” Instead of being offended, he looks rather happy at the prospect. “Perhaps you are brave enough to join me in Gargoyle Studies club?” he offers with feigned indifference. You smile up at him and lay a hand on his arm in a friendly fashion, “Of course Malleus, I’d love to join you!”

He looks startled for a moment, “You know who I am? And you’d still join me?” You laugh and think, ‘oh, it’s this plotline.’ So, you sweetly reply, “Of course, I’m not afraid of you at all.” He smiles in amusement, “No?” You fluster and start stammering, “No, not at all. I mean you were my favorite in the game. I really think you look cool in your dorm uniform and the way you banter at the other dorm leaders is so fun.” You shake your head in embarrassment and return your eyes to his face only to find him rather shocked. “Game…” he says slowly, and your eyes go wide; you’d broken the only rule of this world; you’d spoken of the ‘game.’ You were speechless, standing rooted in the hall and no longer feeling like such a main character.

Finally, Malleus smiles with all his teeth displayed, “Player, how bold of you to speak out.” You thought he meant to be friendly but suddenly, it seemed rather ominous. “I…I think I’m not supposed to talk about that. Can you not tell the others?” He chuckles deeply and places a hand on your shoulder, “Worry not, dear Player. This shall be our secret.” You let out a small sigh of relief, at least this player business wouldn’t be all over the school. Then he leans closer and whispers, “And you’ll join me in the Gargoyle Studies Club, yes?” You nod, “Oh yes, I will. I…I’m looking forward to it?” You no longer sound confident at all, but his eyes narrow in satisfaction as he allows you to depart. You do so quickly, wondering if anything bad would come of your misstep. Surely not, it was only the one time and you’d be sure never to make that same mistake again!

Malleus watches you go with great pleasure. A secret shared; such things are binding between the two who share it. As a fae, he knew better than most how such bindings can be made to be more permanent. Yes, it was true that speaking to the Player in such a manner was taboo. However, Malleus was a Prince of the Dark Court; what care did he have for taboo? He’d dare far more to bind the Player to his side. This, this was just a fortuitous beginning to a very long partnership between you. He’d make sure of it.
