Jealousy, Jealousy - Rook, Jade, Malleus
Rook:
Isn't usually.
He loves you, and he knows you love him.
Why would Rook be jealous when you’re together almost every night?
And he knows where you’ve been all day.
He knows that your pupils don’t dilate when you talk to other people, just him.
In the event that a friend got too touchy, he is more concerned about your comfort, rather than jealously.
If you spend so much time away from him doing studies, he recites poems until you tell him to stop moping and you study together.
But you usually spend the night over, or he goes over to you.
So whatever the reason he is jealous for, Rook doesn’t like it.
Watches you to see if you’ll walk away from whatever because you saw Rook, and then goes up to you to swoop you away.
Isn’t aggressive, but is bolder with you.
Has a hand holding yours more, kisses you more, is around you A LOT
It doesn’t matter how small your tasks are, he’s coming with you.
Jade:
Dotes on you more.
Can he do anything to help you? Are you tired, do need some water? A snack perhaps? Do your feet hurt, do you want to sit down?
Will even give you tips on your homework and practice potions with you.
And that’s how you know. Jade studies with you, sure. And yeah, he gives you tips, but it’s much more fun watching you fail and pout before he helps you actually make a potion.
But he isn’t an ass, and just helps this time.
Will take you to the small town off campus and spend a day with you. You can go to shops, get ice cream, go to the beach, or Whatever else people do in town.
It’s suspicious how he’s being more sweet than usual, so when you ask if you forgot a special day or something
“Not at all. I just wanted to keep you with me. I thought that maybe we weren’t spending so much time together.”
It’s such a normally posed sentence, but the past week, Jade picked you up from class. He doesn’t do that.
And Floyd got pissed at you because he visits Jade between classes and he didn’t find Jade and it’s your fault.
Malleus:
They toast.
Is pouty, but tries to hide it. You can see it though.
Malleus does not like the feeling of jealousy.
As he puts it, Malleus doesn't like you being away from him for so long because what if something happened to you? What if you told him you'd be in the alchemy lab and you weren't there?
And it's because 'someone needed help with something.'
Dear, that's sweet of you, but don't worry him like that.
Dotes on you more than usual, and gifts you random things. Sometimes it's flowers he twisted into a crown, other times it might be an item from a picture you took a screenshot of.
Spends wayy more time with you.
Anytime you need him or not, he's there.
And nobody, nobody, is getting too close to you.
Will almost hit them with a shot put ball because they were asking you too many questions.
You're with him more than anyone else, and he knows you love him, so Malleus likes to call it 'being protective of you', rather than a term like jealousy.

Hello! May I please request a gn!reader that loves marine science and all things ocean and how they would get along with the Octavinelle boys? Reader did not know that the Octavinelle trio were merfolk until the events of Book 3 unfolded. (Platonic please, if you don’t mind)
hey hey! sorry this took so long<3
⇢ Octavinelle x Gn! Reader
⇢Warnings; Platonic relationships. gn! reader, marine biologist! reader
Tumblr media
Azul Ashengretto
He’s definitely interested in any facts you randomly go off on about, especially if you start ranting about Octavinelle and how much you love it all
It’s an ego boost for him<3
But not rlly, Azul is actually interested in the facts, he also definitely learned something new about himself during your rants about octopi
Skip forward to book 3, when you happen to learn about them being mermen, he bluescreens damn near every time you ask about his mer-form
and asking him to change into it
.. He’ll do it maybe once but from then on it’s only on special occasions (or if he’s in an extremely good mood)
please just compliment his form, not specifically cause it’ll change the fact of when he’ll reveal it to you (..maybe tho?)
and definitely not because of the bias discounts..
and definitely because he’s genuinely pretty and god damn he needs the boost in his confidence (also the truth)
Tumblr media
Jade Leech
While he also is very interested to hear about anything you have, Jade likes to create mental notes about any other mer-creature hybrids that may help convince them of one thing or another
Already knows about him and his twins’ hybrid species, you can’t really surprise him with anything but he likes to give you any facts that pop into his head
just to watch you become confused and scramble to add it to notes or attempting to evidence of said creature doing that
It’s not that it hasn’t crossed his mind to show you, Jade just wanted to wait before you went and started turning him into the guinea pig
But like, the wait was worth it because hearing your excited gasp and nearly trip over yourself to grab anything you could about eels to do.. whatever and sketch, to pics, whatever was super amusing to him
Tumblr media
Floyd Leech
Floyd is equally energetic as you are about it, he can list any defense tactic any sea mer-person can do once he gets going, simply due to either scaring, fighting, or some other “experiment”
He definitely doesn’t even attempt to hide his mer-form away, and loved the attention you give him in that form
Be careful because he will try to squeeze and/or bite you if you’re not paying attention
srsly watch out bc he has sOME CHOMPERS
he went nomnomnomnomnomnom-
He’s very pleased by the little human being absolutely enchanted with his eel teeth and whatnot, but don’t think that stops him from messing around with you
because it doesn’t<33

The Kicker: Jade Gets Served (Jade Leech and Reader)
Warnings: Jade’s machinations, feral Ace, etc.
Summary: Jade offers to help you study for one of your exams with Professor Crewel. (Un)fortunately for you, Ace and Deuce don’t take too kindly to slimy eels trying to cajole you into a deal where you might end up getting poisoned by mushrooms. The end result? A scuffle that nearly puts Jade out of commission. Permanently.
.
.
.
You weren't quite sure how you ended up in this situation. Actually, you did know, but you didn't want to admit that it was because of circumstances well within your control that caused you to drop into this situation as you had.
You see, you were studying with the rest of your fellow first years. Ace and Deuce had been silently goofing off in the corner while Grim had been taking a nap on the table, his head resting on one of the textbooks needed to pass Professor Crewel's class.
There was an exam on the last five potions that Crewel had you create, which consisted of the interaction of ingredients, the main uses of the aforementioned potions, and why the ingredients used were important. While it should have been straightforward on paper, you knew from experience that Crewel was tricky and required in depth explanations for all of his essay questions.
Hence the reason why you were silently panicking as you thumbed through the notes that you had taken in the lecture portion of his class.
You weren't the best student (that was saved for the Heartslabyul and Octavinelle dorm heads), but you were certainly not the worst. Yet, you wanted to succeed, to get a passing score. You had no one to impress back home, but you wanted to make it so that all the time spent in Twisted Wonderland wasn't in vain. Even if you could never go back home, at least you had the foundation and the skills to survive past high school in Twisted Wonderland...
Now, if only Ace and Deuce would stop bickering like an old married couple!
You were about to interfere in their discussion concerning the benefits of causing a disturbance in Crewel's class just so they could get out of an exam—it was never worth it, in your opinion—when you felt rather than saw a looming presence near your study table. As the hairs on the back of your neck and arms stood at ramrod attention, you shifted your gaze from the margins of your notebook to find that one of the Leech twins was looking down at you, a curious, but polite smile on his face.
"Good afternoon, Prefect. I couldn't help but notice that you and your friends were making quite the ruckus when I came in." Despite the good natured inflection of his voice, you couldn't help but feel like he was mocking you.
"I see... Were we bothering you?" It wasn't like the Vice Housewarden of Octavinelle to appear out of nowhere. Like the rest of the students of that particular dorm, he didn't do anything unless there was something in it for him.
"I wouldn't say that you were bothering me necessarily, but..." A well placed chuckle alongside his signature covering of the mouth with one of his gloved hands. "The librarian sends his regards.” His golden eye flashed a little in the light. “And a few well meaning threats.”
“Ah…” Out of discomfort, you chuckled a little before leaning over in your seat to whack Ace and Deuce with one of your textbooks. Immediately, Ace made a sound like a dying cat, but immediately hushed when he saw Jade give one of his eerie grins that looked more at home in a horror movie.
With Ace and Deuce finally under control (although, you could see that the two of them were sending side glances at you and the Vice Housewarden of Octavinelle), you finally gave Jade your full attention. If there was one thing that you learned about Octavinelle as a whole was that while most of the students were willing to help anyone in need, there was a price that had to be paid. Had you signed a contract with Azul? Had you asked for help from one of the lower ranking Octavinelle students? Shoot… Or had you made a deal with none other than Jade Leech himself?
Jade must have sensed your discomfort because he merely chuckled and gave you one of his nonchalant smiles that didn’t dispel the differing emotion in his mismatched eyes. “The other tables in the library are filled. May I take this seat?”
You could have rolled your eyes at the blatant lie. You knew full well at this time of day that most Night Raven College students preferred to stay in their dorms or work in unused classrooms instead of going to the library. If anything, Jade would have more than his fair share of the lot.
You gestured for him to take the seat next to you and in doing so, you failed to notice that you had left the first few pages of one of the essays that you had given Crewel a few weeks ago, a red circle surrounding a very, very low score. Ace and Deuce had already seen the score and given you looks of sympathy alongside a few teasing remarks about how you would have to start requesting private tutoring sessions with Crewel. At the rate of how you were doing in certain classes… you had to admit that their teasing was not unfounded.
“Oh my…” Jade’s eyes furrowed in what you could discern was concern, but if you looked deeper, you could make out the undercurrent of mockery. “I don’t suppose you’ve found yourself a dedicated tutor this late in the semester?”
His gaze flitted to the chaotic duo—who were once again bickering, albeit a lot more quietly—and back to you. This time, the concern was completely overshadowed by the obvious amusement that he had at your situation.
“Well… No, not really.” You squirmed in your seat as you tried to evade his probing gaze. That was another thing with the Octavinelle students, or at least with the main trio that you associated with most of the time, it was like all three of them could find out your deepest secrets and weaknesses with just their gazes and with well timed questions. “But I’ve been studying a lot!”
He hummed a little under his breath before fixing you with a gaze that would have easily frozen one of the braver students in their place.
“I see.” His tone sounded unconvinced, but he turned to his own pile of textbooks that he had on hand before settling his gaze upon you again. “I don’t doubt your ability to exceed expectations, but not many would pass up the opportunity to increase your chances of success.”
Ah.
You should have guessed.
Another business proposal.
Your gaze fell upon your notes; half finished equations and misspelled ingredient lists greeted you in return. Oh… You were deep in the shit weren’t you?
“Okay. If someone, hypothetically, were to increase their chances of success, how would they go about doing it?”
You always wondered what it was like to see a shark react to a drop of blood in the water, but seeing Jade’s face now, you realized now that you no longer need to contemplate such an image. It was rather horrifying, like watching a fly get trapped in a spider’s web and start struggling for its life: you were long since desensitized to this, but when you really thought about it, it made your skin crawl with unease.
“I suppose they could find themselves a competent tutor… but I suppose this person—hypothetically, of course—would have to remember that everything comes with a price.” He paused. Was it for dramatic effect? You wouldn’t know, but it did add emphasis to what he said next. “However, if you talk to the right person, perhaps they might offer a rare, once in a lifetime discount?”
Your eyes narrowed. “And does this right person have to be you, Jade?”
He placed a gloved hand over his chest. “Prefect, you flatter me!”
Your eyes narrowed further.
“Your intuition serves you well, I was talking about myself.” He chuckled, his joke entertaining himself just fine. “Since we’re both on a tight schedule this evening, I’ll make this concise: I’ll help you review for your next exam and in return, you have to taste test some recipes that I have in mind for next season’s menu for the lounge.”
If it were anyone else, you would have thought that he would have been getting the shorter end of the stick. Getting tutored by one of the higher ranking students in the school? And taste testing what was sure to be heavenly food? Amazing! The thing was, this was Jade Leech. And Jade Leech was always hiding poison underneath that honey eyed gaze and sweet words that he would murmur.
It was also worrying that Floyd had told you that a week ago, Jade had been out in the mountains procuring various plants for his collection.
Taste testing Jade’s newest concoctions was literally a recipe for disaster, one that would either land you in the infirmary at best or you would end up back in the Ramshackle Dorm… as a permanent non-living resident.
Yet, despite the risks, you wanted to not only get a passing score, but you also wanted to one-up Ace and Deuce. They were equally as average as you, but you were tired of the fact that because they had magic, they were already miles ahead of you in certain subjects. You were studying theory and would it not be nice to be good at least one thing in this school? It rankled at you to admit it, but Jade’s offer was tempting.
“Let me make this clear,” because if you didn’t, you knew that Jade could and would exploit any loopholes that you would leave glaringly open, “you’ll help me ace this exam and all I have to do is eat your food?”
Jade’s smile, ever present, seemed all the more mischievous.
“Now, now, Prefect… I said that the right person would tutor you, not that it would lead to you passing.”
The smug bastard.
He was at least somewhat honest, even if it let you down.
“So what would it take to get me to pass?”
And that’s when you began to be all the more alarmed when you saw Jade’s teeth peek from beneath his lips. A part of you knew that he and Floyd were twins, but you thought it was only Floyd with the sharp shark teeth. To see it from Jade’s (usually) non-threatening visage was alarming.
He leaned in close, the gold in his left eye entrancing and chilling you to the bone.
“Well, I’ve found that since I’ve invested most of my efforts in procuring and preparing my newest additions to the recipes, it appears that I’m running low in my personal stores. Perhaps, if you’re willing, you can accompany me on my next hiking expedition.”
Well, that didn’t sound too bad.
The woods near the college weren’t particularly dangerous and you would be traveling with a seasoned hiker. As long as you took precautions when handling the fungi that Jade wanted to incorporate into his food, you should be fine. It seemed like the main threat here would be the initial taste testing and Jade himself.
All things considered… It was actually a pretty good deal.
As long as Azul didn’t get involved and Jade actually helped you, then you didn’t see the problem.
What you didn’t take into account, however, was the fact that Ace and Deuce had actually been listening to your conversation the entire time. While you were somewhat aware of how protective Ace and Deuce may have been concerning you, it was still somewhat shocking to feel the back of your chair hauled backward. The movement was so jarring, you almost didn’t register the squealing sound the legs of the chair made upon the unrelenting wood underneath your seat. In your peripheral, you could spot a few meandering students sending shocked glances in your group’s direction, but you paid more attention to the fact that Ace had placed himself in front of you while Deuce flanked you at your side.
“No way, dude. They’re going to get by with some good ole elbow grease and determination.”
Because Ace's back was turned towards you, Jade's expression was not made noticeable. Instead, what made you concerned that Jade was miffed at the interruption was the fact that Deuce's grip on your bicep tightened marginally. Deuce was already a strong young man and his grip was not something that should be laughed at, but you were still somewhat surprised by how little you could move under his grasp.
"I can understand your lack of trust in receiving help from others, but I can assure you, I only have the best of intentions for our dear Prefect."
You heard Ace snort in front of you. Knowing him, he was probably only seconds away from offering a rebuttal that would only increase the tension rather than defusing it.
"Hey, Ace?" You grasped Ace's sleeve, not quite leaving the safety of your seat due to Deuce's grip, but you were leaning forward in an attempt to do so. "Come on, I think it might be fun to get some help from Jade! And besides, it's not like he's a bad cook!"
Then again, you didn't have any evidence that he was a good cook either. It was usually Floyd who created the menus for Mostro Lounge.
Ace ignored you, dark righteousness lacing his tone. “It’s not that I don’t trust others. I don’t trust you.”
What happened next remained a mystery.
All you knew was that Deuce was pulling you back, the tall tower of books that had been placed precariously at your side prior to this encounter wobbled before knocking into Ace, and then Ace…
Well, there were a few interesting takes to this situation, but all of them didn’t seem to make sense.
When you asked Ace, he would say that when the tower of books fell, they bumped into him. Normally, this wouldn’t have bothered Ace at all, but Deuce tried to catch the books that began to break free from their formation. While your books about alchemical laws and encyclopedias of fungi were saved from getting crumpled on the floor, Deuce had unwittingly pushed Ace right into Jade’s personal space.
You never tried to ask Jade what happened, but Floyd happened upon you one day and said that Jade watched as the tower of books fell, which knocked into Ace, and Ace began pinwheeling into Jade.
And finally, when you asked Deuce what happened, he said that he wasn’t paying attention, but he did try to get all of the books back onto the table before they fell. It wasn’t until later that Deuce realized that he pushed Ace into Jade.
The fact of the matter was this: your books were safe, Deuce was a good friend, and Ace and Jade were not doing too well in the aftermath of such an event.
You see, all three stories recounted the fact that Ace fell onto Jade.
What these three stories didn’t tell you was that Ace was hotheaded and impulsive.
So when Ace began to realize that his balance was failing him, he reached out to steady himself.
Unfortunately, as coordinated as Ace could be in most circumstances, his talents failed him now. Instead of reaching for the table, he reached out for Jade, but overshot it (somehow), and ended up barreling on top of Jade.
Jade, as composed as he was on any normal day, decided to let loose in the most deranged way possible. Instead of sitting still and taking the blow or trying to steady Ace with outstretched hands, Jade had found it necessary to push Ace back by thrusting his palm upward and straight for Ace’s chin.
Ace did, indeed, fly backwards into Deuce and not into Jade like you had expected.
No, Ace decided to be as overdramatic as possible. His arms flailed like the blades of a windmill and as he continued his descent towards Deuce, one of his arms swept a particularly large textbook from the table and straight
INTO
JADE’S
LAP.
If it were any other day, any other scenario, this detail would have slipped everyone’s minds immediately. However, it wasn’t any other day. It wasn’t even a normal day.
And as such, you had to face the overwhelmingly ridiculous reality that Ace may have had either perfect aim or his anger and confusion was enough to send the book rocketing at speeds rivaling Mach 1 right at Jade’s crotch.
The groin.
The area where Jade probably hid his family jewels.
The instant the book made contact with Jade, the most feminine of shrieks erupted from his throat. Jade didn’t have the time to look abashed at the sound he had made. Instead, he devoted his energy to folding over in his seat before falling unceremoniously on the floor.
His face was carefully blank, but his eyes.
Oh, his eyes.
Something told you that you either had to make amends on Ace’s behalf or make a contract with Azul to make sure that his Vice Housewarden was well in hand before he decided that the three of you were on tonight’s menu.

Imagine tall and teasing m! Reader with the fish mafia (YAY REQ OPEN!! YOUR WRITING IS EPIC)
I’m glad you like my writing so much!
Honestly I had a lot of fun writing this, mostly because I'd kill to see Jade blush, but that's neither here nor there.
Enjoy the headcanons! And thank you for Requesting!
Info: Cannon heights - Azul: 5’9”, Jade: 6’2”, Floyd: 6’2”. Yuu is reader, Tall Yuu (6’8”), Male Yuu (he/him)
Tw: Probably OOC (flustered) Tweels, flirty/teasing Yuu
Azul Ashengrotto
Azul is flustered beyond belief. He’s no stranger to being tested by people taller than him, but Yuu is a different case for multiple reasons. The main one being: He is Azul’s boyfriend, and as such, doesn’t hold back when it comes to making Azul blush.
Honestly Yuu could be sitting down in front of him and Azul would still be a flustered mess, trying to avoid walking near him thus he get pulled onto Yuu’s lap and be stuck there for the next half hour.
Yuu doesn’t show Azul mercy even when the two of them are attending lectures. Yuu is always saying or doing something to see pink dust across Azul’s face, it’s ruining his reputation for sevens sake! Having his tall ass boyfriend tap him against a wall to flirt with him is embarrassing to no end, and yet Azul can’t bring himself to do anything more than mildly scold Yuu for his actions in public.
All is forgiven when Yuu, being the tease he is, gives Azul little kisses before disappearing to who knows where. Probably to go and cause chaos with their first year friends. Azul will try and make them flustered back but more often than not he fails miserably.
Jade Leech
Jade doesn’t get flustered, at least not easily. It's hard to gain and keep his attention, the only things able to do so are his mushrooms and his boyfriend. Said boyfriend has quite a bit of height on him and a penchant for teasing, a breath of fresh air for Jade all things considered. Not many people have the gall to tease and flirt with the infamous vice warden of Octavinelle.
But Yuu is a special case, one that knows all the right buttons to push and when to get even the tiniest reaction out of Jade with practiced ease. Try all he likes Jade can only keep up the facade for so long when Yuu is playing with his hair and whispering god-awful mushroom based pickup lines into his ear. Eventually he will crack and the reaction is so worth it to them. Jade himself doesn’t mind too much either.
Unless it's done in public, he has a reputation to keep up. Cool, unwavering, and intimidating, being flustered and showing it is not anywhere near that facade. He might not show that ke cares to keep his mask up but that's still all part of the act.
He truly does not like when Yuu makes any sort of attempt out in public. The only forms of affection he will accept are quick pecks and the vocational hand holding. Anything else and he runs the risk of a crack forming in his mask. Yuu knows better, and yet every once in a while they’ll try their luck and fail miserably.
Floyd Leech:
Floyd practically wears his emotions on his sleeve, even if they fluctuate at a mildly rapid pace, and as such he does become flustered somewhat easily. On a good day, that is. When he’s in a good mood he’s practically attached to Yuu, squeezing his taller boyfriend and whining if they need to separate for classes or he was given a task from Azul.
All Yuu really has to do is lean down and kiss him, or bite him, and Floyd is already blushing and giggling. He will return the favor a hundred fold, which practically leads to some form of love induced play-fighting.
This is often done in public purely because Floyd does not care. His reputation? It’ll still keep even if he’s seen making out with Yuu at the end of one of his basketball practices, not that he cares about his reputation so much either. As long as he can keep doing what he wants there's not any reason to care about anything except Yuu.
That's not to say Floyd is always okay with Yuu’s flirting and teasing. When he’s in a bad mood there's time where even he can’t cure Floyd of his foul temper and violent aggression. Being flirty and teasing would only serve to make any situation worse, it’s better to just let Floyd sort out his feelings on his own, while still being open to what he needs in the moment.

Twisted Wonderland Whumptober
October 5th - hypothermia - Kalim
characters: kalim, azul, jade, floyd, yuu, grim
cw// spoilers for chapter 4, water, hypothermia, whump, one session therapy
The feeling of betrayal honestly hurt more than the rough landing directly into the near-frozen sand at the edge of Scarabia. Years upon years of trusting someone, only to find out that they hate you will always sting more than a serrated knife to the back.
The sand puffed up around them as the little group hit the ground, and while the merfolk seemed to recover quickly, the humans of the group took a little time.
“Sea Otter?” Kalim heard a voice gently say, with a prod to his side, “You alive?”
“‘M okay.” Kalim said quietly, finally shifting to sit up.
Floyd was hovering beside him, crouched down and leaning over to catch his eyes. He looked…genuinely worried, actually. His hald moon eyes were mournful, lips pointed into a light frown. Floyd wrapped one arm around Kalim’s back, helping him sit as he reoriented himself. “You hit the ground kinda hard. Does anything feel broken or wobbly?”
“How many fingers am I holding up?” Jade asked and- wait, when did he get over here? He was flanking Kalim’s other side, holding up three fingers. He, too, looked worried, though it was less plain to see than on his twin’s face.
“Three.” Kalim said, wiping his eyes with the heel of his palms. He found they were wet, and unfortunately extremely cold.
Jade nodded - not that Kalim could really see, he was not focused on the sand in his eyes - and Floyd began to tug Kalim to his feet, softly shushing his protestations.
“You’re alright, Sea Otter, we’ve got you.”
“Jamil hates me.” He whimpered, beginning to cry again, “He overblotted and its my fault, I should have…”
“It’s seriously cold out here, it’s like we’re under the ice floes.” Floyd commented, rubbing at his arms. He turned to look at Azul, who nodded slightly in agreement.
“Grim is a ball of fur, and we merfolk have some innate cold resistance, but…” Azul began. The scarabia housewarden began to shiver against the cold, his dorm uniform doing nothing to protect him. Short sleeves weren’t meant for freezing temperatures after all. He turned to find the Prefect in the same condition, and frowned. “I fear Yuu and Kalim will not last long in this cold.”
“We don’t have any brooms or carpets to fly out on. What does that leave us for options?” Jade asked, a slight bitter note to his voice. He took off his scarf, gently draping it around Kalim, who was softly weeping.
“It’s a slog, but walkin’s our only way back.” Floyd grumbled.
“We spent quite a while in flight before we landed. It could take hours - possibly days - to trudge back on foot.” Azul pointed out, watching their companions with a keen eye. He removed his glasses and gently cleaned some condensation from the temperature changes from them, frowning.
“Jamil…I trusted you…” Kalim whispered, his tears leaving bright red streaks down his cold cheeks.
“You cryin’, little Sea Otter? Your tears are gonna freeze over, y’know.” Floyd gently prodded, pulling Kalim closer for warmth, a little pat on his shoulders in an attempt at comfort.
“It’s all my fault. I drove Jamil to the brink without even realizing it.” He sniffled and wiped at his nose with the back of his hand. “The real Jamil would never do such things! He’s a good guy, he’s always helping me, giving me a shoulder to lean on, and-”
“Isn’t that attitude what drove him to the brink to begin with?” Yuu asked, interrupting him, an unimpressed look on their face.
“What?” Kalim asked, freezing to stare at them.
Grim let out a noise like he was being strangled, as he said, “Hoo boy, Yuu, you really go for the jugular sometimes.”
“I’m with little Shrimpy on this one.” Floyd admitted, “Sea Otter, you’re like…TOO nice. It’s kinda…grating.”
“Huh? Is it?” Kalim asked, looking genuinely surprised. He recoiled away from Floyd for a moment to catch his expression. He was mournfully serious, and it only served to make Kalim feel worse.
“Yes,” Jade spoke up, “If I were betrayed by someone the way you were…” He paused, looking down at Kalim, face set in a smile but eyes reading completely different, “I’d lash out with a torrent of unmitigated verbal abuse to break them down mentally, then bind them and drag them beneath the waves.” He smiled, a little bit more toothy, “Perhaps you should try something like that? As the way that you blame yourself and try to excuse his behavior is, quite frankly, a tad galling.”
“Galling? Really?” Kalim asked, voice wavering between upset and angered, “But, I mean, Jamil would never betray me. Ever.”
“Uh, newsflash, he did.” Floyd pointed out, tilting his head. “In fact, he was gonna make you out to be the bad guy and get you expelled. He’s an enormous Douchebag.”
“When it comes to underhanded ploys, Azul at his worst couldn't hold a candle to that.” Jade said, keen eyes watching Kalim. The poor boy hadnt stopped shaking, and it came to the point that Jade went to Azul and took his decorative coat, draping it around Kalim in an attempt to starve off the cold. Kalim was rapidly going from warm pink to pale-ish grey, which was not at all comforting.
“...know. It’s okay to hold your head high and denounce him for the traitor that he is.” Jade had said, though Kalim felt like it was underwater for a moment.
“You carry yourself like a goody-two-shoes, laughing off conflict with a flippant word or two. To twisted individuals like myself and Jamil- ah, I mean, to calculating individuals, those remarks are like barbs digging under our skin.” Azul adjusted his glasses, watching the panic rise on Kalim’s face as he continued, “I’d say you’ve been pushing Jamil since your formative years. Though, it’s not your fault in the least, of course. You were born into a very high social class. As showered as you were with affection from your family and everyone around you, you grew up with honesty and integrity. An upbringing like that would make anyone take certain things for granted.”
“That’s…not much of a compliment.” Yuu said.
“I would argue that in Kalim’s case, it might simply be a case of a naturally innocent disposition.” Jade added on, frowning slightly.
“Oh…” Kalim said softly, lips taking on a tint of periwinkle, “So Jamil is…bad?”
“Extremely.” Yuu said, shivering rather hard themself. They had bitten down on their cheek, forcing themself to muddle through it.
“In that case, I’d better get back fast!” Kalim said with newfound determination. He did his classic pose, fist clenched and all. He began to feel warm again, chalking it up to the coat and scarf around his neck, “I must punch him and yell ‘traitor!’ I owe him that much.”
“That, and we need to bring him to his senses fast. If we don’t, his life will be in danger.” Azul agreed. He covered his face with his hand, though it was clear there was a burning emotion eating at him. Guilt? Fear? Sadness? “We have to get back before his magic reserves run dry.”
“That puts us right back to where this conversation started.” Floyd grumbled, “How do we get back? Walkin’ really fast?” His sarcastic tone cut through the cold, letting a bit of levity hit Kalim, who giggled slightly.
“My nose is gonna freeze over if we stay out here much longer!” Grim yoweled, frowning.
“If there was a river, we could swim back.” Jade said, “Sadly, all the rivers here are dried out.”
River…river…water…Water! Kalim turned his attention to Jade, “So…a lack of water is the problem?” “Yes,” Azul hummed, “Jade and Floyd can easily outpace brooms when they're in their true forms. But we can’t exactly restore a dry river…”
“Maybe you can’t, but I can.” Kalim grinned, teeth chattering against the cold.
“HUH?” Each of the mermafia asked at once, taken aback at this claim.
“Kalim, has the cold perhaps gone to your head?” Jade asked hesitantly. He reached out to touch him, finding that his skin was cold enough to be felt through his gloves, and frowned.
“My signature spell, Oasis Maker, can produce an enormous volume of water with just a smidgen of magical power. If I make you a river, you can get us back to the dorm, right?” He said confidently, brushing off Jade’s hand.
“Y-you mean to tell me THAT’S your signature spell? That’s insane!” Azul gaped.
“Aha ha! It’s pretty useless when we’ve already got running water.”
“Don’t ‘aha ha’ me! Some countries don’t HAVE that sort of infrastructure. Your power would make you nothing short of a hero to those people! That’s…thats…ABSURDLY marketable!”
Jade rolled his eyes and shoved Azul away gently. “I think we can leave Azul to his get-rich-quick fantasies for a bit. Kalim, if you would oblige us?”
“You just need a river, right?” He nodded to himself, gathering his strength, “Okay, I’m on it!”
He called down the rains, hands held out as the sparkling water fell down around them, quickly filling up the trenches of rivers long before, and long since dried. He smiled in wonder, ignoring the shaking in his knees and the overwhelming heat blooming under his skin. He wanted to take everything off, to cool down. It burned, it made him feel feverish.
“....and Sea Otter, you’re with me.”
Kalim looked over to see his allies transformed into their true forms, and nearly laughed. He had almost forgotten they were merfolk, nearly forgotten why he had called the rain. He came over quickly to Floyd, gripping onto his arm, the Ramshackle prefect by his side. Both climbed onto Floyd’s back, legs wrapping around his middle for stability. Kalim was up near his neck, clinging with his arms wrapped around him in a hug, while Yuu did the same to Kalim.
They began to move as the ice cold rain kept beating down, stinging against the skin like tiny glass shards.
The world was a blur as Kalim drifted between being underwater and just above the surface. His hands began to feel numb and his eyes drooped. He found his shivering had returned, but barely noticed it, instead focusing on the pain.
He felt his eyelids grow heavy and his grip began to slip, leaving him limp against the prefect as Floyd swam as fast as he could. He felt the weightlessness of being underwater and heard several screams before he felt arms around him again, pulling him up and to the surface. Everything beyond that was a mystery.
-----------
“Kalim? Kalim, are you alright? Please, speak to me.” He heard a voice calling him distantly, with warm hands tugging him up.
He looked up to find Jade staring at him and - oh, this seemed familiar. Hadn’t this happened before?
“He’s alive.” Jade breathed to a group beyond him. Kalim noted that he was no longer in eel form, but rather back to being dressed, yet his hair was damp. He turned to look and found they were back in Scarabia, in the dining hall, and he was laid out on the table. He groaned, and Jade hushed him, “Quiet. Jamil is looking for you, and you are in no shape to fight.”
“I-”
“We will protect you.” Azul promised, “Rest. Warm up. We’ve got this.”
“Yeah, Sea Otter. You’re in good hands. But we’ll be sure to save you your revenge punch, don’t worry.”
