Psychic Summer Internship
Jumping from Forspoken to Psychonauts 2 felt like a huge change. While both explored mental health, Forspoken was primarily focused on depression and madness. Its world was not one of high contrast or vibrant wilderness. Rather, it was grounded in grim reality with a world that was falling apart at the seams. Throughout the time I spent in Athia, it was clear that the people in Cipal were holding on by just a thread. Psychonauts 2, on the other hand, was an entirely different beast. The entire game world thrummed with life; the colours popped and there was a general sense of busyness as one rolled around the Motherlobe. The world was fresh, zany and, for this humble blogger, quite a lot smaller than the monstrous map I spent more than 60 hours in.
Tumblr media
Psychonauts 2 was released in 2021 as the sequel to one of Double Fine’s beloved games. Just like the other entries, players were put into the shoes of Raz Aquato, right after the events from the VR entry (which, in and of itself was a quick adventure that was only hours after the events of the first game). Having rescued the Grand Head: Truman Zanatto, Raz and the rest of the Psychonaut agents were trying to figure out why Dr Loboto had managed to capture the leader of the Psychonauts. And so, the game starts off in a mental construct of Dr Loboto’s mind: a dreary office that echoes the daily grind many face in their waking world.
After winning a paid vacation for being the best employee in this fictional office that was on par with the movie Inception in creating a familiar environment, Dr Loboto is tasked with finding his ‘boss’ to sign off on the trip. So begins the tutorial section of the game as Raz follows the mad scientist dentist.
Until it all goes horribly wrong and the office construct slowly breaks apart.
Though Raz and the Psychonauts are unable to discover who had employed Dr Loboto to kidnap Truman before they arrive at the Motherlobe, they press forward with the interrogation. Raz, himself, at only ten is inducted into the Psychonauts intern program. And is assigned to work under Nick from the Mailroom,
Ten! And already putting in the hard hours to spruce up his resume! Truly, Raz is the ideal candidate for any job. That or the Psychonauts are breaking child labour laws.
Perhaps the heir to Grulovia, Gristol Malik, was right right after all! The Psychonauts are monsters!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
After joining the Psychonauts officially, albeit as an intern, Raz soon discovers Nick from the Mailroom trussed up in packaging and brainless. Finding a key in Nick’s pocket, the senior agents, suspecting a double agent, try to identify them by heading to the Lady Luctopus Casino. Raz and the rest of the interns also partake in the mission. But only after Raz has massed around with the mental connections in Psychonaut agent and erstwhile agent: Hollis Forsythe.
And here is where we find my biggest disappointment with the game. Despite the promise of espionage and high-stakes missions set out on the caper to the Lady Luctopus Casino, this was the only real appearance of a location outside the general area of the Motherlobe. While setting the game in and around the Quarry, the Questionable Area and Green Needle Gulch helped contain the game, I couldn’t help but wish for a globe-trotting adventure around the Psychonauts world. Instead, we got woods, woods and more woods.
That said, the areas that players did get to play through aren’t small by any means. They are liberally peppered with collectibles and are stuffed to the brim with fun side activities to complete.
In a game all about the power of the mind, however, is was the mental realms in Psychonauts 2 that truly shone. I loved how unique and original they all were. From the fractured mind of Ford Cruller to the Hospital Casino that was part and parcel of Hollis’s hot streak period or even the trippy aspect of the Psi King’s Sensorium. These were all excellent ways to demonstrate a character’s mental state as well as their life experience.
Tumblr media
One of my favourites was that of Cassie O’Pea. In her mental realm, Raz had to reunite all her different archetypes. These were all facets of who she was but were not quite the whole. It reminded me of the short story I wrote a year or two ago called Splintered where I tried to explore the many masks that people wear, whether they’re neurotypical or neurodivergent.
After all, with the hunt for being authenticity, why do we always pretend to be someone else in order to be liked?
Of course, it’s not always about being liked. Sometimes it’s about putting on another hat in order for survival. Trapped in a terrible life situation, a child has to grow up fast in order to cope. The hope, of course, is that once those circumstances end, they can return to being the child they once were if perhaps a little wiser and more responsible than they were before.
I, for one, have felt like this when interacting with my friends. I have a group of board game friends. Then a group of video game enthusiasts that I call my friends. And now I have a group at work that I can maybe call my book friends. True, they might not read all the authors that I do but I can discuss some of the books that I read with people! It’s a dream come true!
Throughout the game, more and more major story elements are dropped like breadcrumbs before Raz and it isn’t long before the truth is revealed. His family was not cursed to die in water by a gypsy fortune teller. Rather, his great aunt was Maligula and she had replaced his actual grandmother after the Psychic 6 defeated her two decades ago. It was she that was the Deluge of Grulovia and which the Delugionists (great word play on delusion) were trying to bring back. Except, of course, there weren’t many Delugionists to speak of. The mole was Nick from the Mailroom. Who was actually the heir to Grulovia in disguise because he had run out of black caviar to consume.
While the plot of Psychonauts 2 could be considered simplistic when compared to other games, I enjoyed how mental health issues were incorporated from a gameplay perspective with new enemies like flying regrets with heavy weights that could crush you if one wasn’t careful, enablers that buff other enemies, doubts that slow Raz down and panic attacks that seem so incredibly overwhelming until they can be slowed down. Of course, mental illness cannot be so easily defeated but the message throughout the game was heartfelt and heartwarming.
Plus, it wasn’t as on the nose like Frey’s message to Homer at the end of the game.
Beyond that, I also liked the new abilities that Psychonauts 2 employed. From mental connection to slowing time to creating a paper-thin copy of Raz that can slip between cage bars to open a door. While not all of them are effective in a fight, they provided new ways to problem solve and were a delight to play around. So much so that I also nabbed the Platinum for the title! A fact that I’m quite proud of for I now sit at 14 Platinums on my PlayStation profile.
So, is Psychonauts 2 a fun game? You bet your last dollar it is. Is it Game of the Year material? Probably not. But it’s a colourful world that isn’t afraid to tackle difficult subjects (though one could argue that its attempts to do so simplify the issues and strip them a little of the nuance that would go with it). Best of all, Psychonauts 2 has a story that, while trope-heavy and which follows some well-known beats, never overstays its welcome. Some might dismiss the fact that it can be finished in about 15 hours but in a world where most are strapped for time, it’s probably one of the better games that can tell such a comprehensive tale without wasting a single moment!
Now we need a game with Raz as an actual adult, solving all of the world’s problems one brain at a time!

Your body jolts upright, lungs immediately gasping for breath.
Panic surges through every nerve as you frantically look around at your surroundings and grasping at the thin sheet you find bunched around your hips.
You’re naked. God why are you naked? How did you get here? Where the fuck are you?
Your heart pounds in your chest as you look next to you in bed and see that someone is lying next to you. A broad back and muscular arms covered in tattoos leading up to a head of messy black hair that covers the persons face lies snoring quietly against the sheets.
“Shit.” You mumble, wrapping the thin sheet around your body as you scramble out of the bed. The man lying in the bed stirs slightly and reaches into the space where your body once was.
You don’t wait to see anything else, dashing for the bedroom door and stumbling into the very dark hallway. The only light comes from the cobweb covered candle sconces that line the black painted walls.
You adjust the sheet around you the best you can before taking off running down the hallway. There is an immediate feeling that you’re being watched and you make the mistake of turning around to look behind you.
The dark shadowy silhouette of a man stands where you had just been a moment ago. You beg your feet to move faster.
Before you reach the top of the stairs, you glance back over your shoulder once more to see what you can only describe as a jack o lantern grin light up and stretch across the face of the man taking his time moving towards to you down the hallway.
“Where are you going, immortelle?”
A voice comes into your mind and almost causes you to fall face first down the winding spiral staircase in front of you.
“Please leave me alone.” You beg as you rush down the stairs. You don’t make it far before you suddenly feel hands gripping at your ankles. Hands with claws….some covered with slime…reaching from under the stairs and tearing at the sheet keeping your naked body from being exposed.
You scream until your throat hurts. Kicking at the hands as you continue to fight your way down the stairs.
“You know how much I love chasing you, baby.”
Somehow you manage to make it to the bottom of the stairs, but you almost wish that you hadn’t when you fall against the front door and throw it open.
You must be hallucinating with fear.
Outside the sky is black and grey swirls of clouds in constant motion, you know if you stared too long you’d become dizzy. Instead, your eyes wonder around to the bare trees surrounding the house you just made your way out of. Just a few leaves hang on for dear life as the wind quite literally howls through the air.
Down the crooked stone steps in front of you is a huge iron gate with two giant pumpkin designs bent into the bars. Gargoyles sit atop every stone post surrounding the house.
Wasting no more time, you descend the stairs until you’ve reached the iron gate, shaking the bars when it doesn’t budge.
“Please open. Please.” You shove with your shoulder as hard as you can and the gate loudly creaks open just enough for you to squeeze out into the open street.
You turn around and shove the gate back shut, looking up at the top of the stairs where the man who had been chasing you through the house now stands with a smile on his half tattooed face and his arms crossed over his bulky bare chest.
You can see even from here that the tattoos on the left side of his face are skull like features. It’s absolutely terrifying.
He lifts a hand in a wave as he menacingly tilts his head to the side and smiles.
Fuck this.
You wrap the blanket tighter around you and take off down the street without a single clue as to where you are. Anywhere has to be better than where you just were.
You spoke too soon again.
The sight in front of you as you round the corner is just as terrifying as that house and that man.
There are monsters, literal monsters, standing in the streets. Selling items at market booths. Chasing their children on the sidewalks. Laughter…and screams. It’s a terrible mix of sounds.
You freeze as a bouncy ball belonging to what you can only assume is a swamp monster child rolls against your feet.
“Happy first day after Halloween Ms Y/N!” The little creature says, staring at you expectantly.
Your instincts tell you not to scream. If you scream it will only make things worse.
“You know my name?” Your voice shakes and so do your hands as you continue holding the blanket around your body.
“Are you alright, miss?” The child’s mother appears behind him, looking at you with concern.
“I um…I should go.” Your bare feet move to cross the street, making you pause when you step in something wet. You know that it’s blood before you even look down. Vomit threatens to fill your mouth but you continue walking away, dragging the train of the sheet you’re wearing through more of the bloody streets.
More monsters stare at you as you go. Some with long sharp teeth and claws that could easily slice through a normal humans delicate skin. Some walked on two feet and some slithered across the ground like sickly serpents.
“Are you lost?” A horrifying witch grabbed your arm and tried to pull you back into the street.
“No, no I’m just on my way somewhere.” You lie the best you can, yanking your arm away only to immediately see deeps scratches from her long nails.
“So sorry miss.” She cackles, moving to join two other witches who were waiting for her on the other side of the street. They all continued their uneasy laughing until you turned the corner up ahead.
As you turned the corner you ran hard into something. Or someone it would appear when you looked up.
“What are you doing out here in nothing but a blanket, Y/N?” The man asks, pushing a pair of glasses up onto his nose.
This man had stitches across his forehead and down around his neck. Like some kind of Frankenstein’s monster, he’s been sewn together.
“Do I know you? Why does everyone here know my name?” You step back to put space between you and the monster.
“Ah, I see. Come with me.” He turns and begins walking but stops when you don’t follow. “I can help you. Come.” He holds out a hand, and while you don’t know what the fuck is happening, something tells you it’s okay to trust this stranger.
You take his hand.
“Who are you?” You finally ask.
“I’m a friend. Dr. Kim Seokjin.” He swings your hands between you in a silly way. “You usually call me Jin. Sometimes Jinnie.”
“Jin.” You repeat, the name feeling familiar on your tongue. “Where are we going?”
“To my lab. I have things that can help you there.” Jin turns another corner and up ahead you can see a tall crooked tower looming in the distance.
“Your lab is in there?”
“It is. Don’t worry Y/N, I promise you’re safe with me.”
You swallow hard but continue to let Jin lead you inside the tower and up, up, up the long spiraling stairs until you reach a door that he slides open.
Inside is a room filled with equipment and various experiments. Glass beakers filled with colorful liquid bubble and burble over small open flames. Sparks fly from wires that connect to different machines and some that connect to nothing at all. There are also several control panels at the center of the room with gurneys situated next to them.
“What kind of doctor are you, Jin?” Your voice shakes a little.
“The helpful kind.” He answers with a menacing grin on his face and a flicker of something slightly insane in his eyes.
“Wh-what do you have here that can help me?” You look down at the dirty blanket still wrapped around your body.
“First,” he grabs your hand again and leads you to a side room that has a cot with some folded clothes lying on top of it, “you can use those clothes to change into, okay? Whatever you want.”
“Thank you.” You step into the small room and turn to face him. “Is something really wrong with me? Something that makes me not remember?”
“Everything is fixable. I’ll have you as good as new in no time.” Jin winks and closes the door behind him so that you can change in private.
You dress in a daze, still feeling very off kilter from everything that’s unfolded from the moment you opened your eyes. Flashes of the man you woke up next too and his terrifying tattooed face race across your memory and leave chills over your skin.
“Ready now?” Jin calls from outside the door. You take a deep breath and walk back out into the laboratory. “Why don’t you take a seat on one of those?” He motions to the gurneys at the center of the room.
Reluctantly, you walk over to them and sit on the thin mattress. It crumples under your weight and immediately sends a sense of dread swimming into your veins.
“How can you fix me?” You barely get the sentence out before Jin is next to you, situating your arms at your sides and wrapping leather straps around your wrists. “What are you doing?” Panic thick in your voice.
“This is how we fix you. Bite this.” He puts a leather strap up to your mouth.
“Are you crazy?! I’m not doing this. Let me go!” You pull against the restraints, thrashing your head and body in an attempt to get the fuck away.
“I know it’s a little frightening. You do this every time. One of your only flaws.” Jin shakes his head, sounding disappointing.
“Flaws? What are you talking about!?”
“You’re my creation. I made you.” He tilts his head and smiles, “and you’re absolutely perfect except for that mind of yours. It resets. Forgets.” He shrugs his shoulders.
“Creation?! I’m a human being! I’m not some experiment! What is wrong with you?” Hot tears starts to leak from the corners of your eyes and blur your vision.
“You’re so adorable sometimes.” Jin yanks on your restraints to tighten them, “sit still, Y/N.”
“You’re hurting me.” You whimper.
“You think that hurts?” Jin smiles before he begins sticking sticky pads to your head and neck. “Just wait.” He whispers into your ear.
You’re such an idiot to have trusted this monster. You were so sure that he was good. A friend. He felt like a friend when you saw him. Familiar.
“Please…don’t.” You beg just before he forcefully shoves the piece of leather between your teeth.
“You’ll thank me soon.”
Terror freezes your body as you watch him slam down a lever on one of the control tables, green electric waves traveling down the wires and entering your body in trembling shocks.
You don’t know how long you lay there, screaming through the pain before you pass out from how much electricity Jin lets pass into your body. But eventually the room goes black and the last thing you hear is Jin manically laughing from across the room.
Tumblr media
“It’s getting worse.”
“I tweaked some things this time. I’m hopeful it lasts longer.”
“It better. I’m tired of losing her.”
You hear quiet voices as you begin to come to. Voices that you recognize almost immediately.
“Jungkook?” Your voice croaks. Almost immediately the door to the small room slides open and the silhouette of the only person you want to see fills the doorway.
“You’re okay, immortelle?” Jungkook rushes into the room and kneels next to the cot you’re laying on.
“What happened to me? Why am I in Jinnie’s lab?” You turn your head to face him when he cups your cheeks in his hands.
“You had another episode, my sweet.” He brings your hand to his lips and kisses your knuckles one by one.
“Episode?” Your brows draw together in confusion.
“You forgot who you were. That you belong to me. You forgot it all.” Jungkook looks sad while he explains and it breaks your heart.
“How could I forget you?” You sit up slowly and he helps you. “How could I forget my love?”
“It’s not your fault, immortelle. Don’t blame yourself.” Jungkook looks over his shoulder at Jin who stands in the doorway. Jin rolls his eyes before walking away.
“Take me home?” You ask, wrapping your arms around Jungkook’s neck when he picks you up into his arms bridal style.
“Of course.”
Jungkook carries you down the long winding staircase of the laboratory and outside where it’s pitch black besides the white melting candles inside the lamp posts along the street.
A smile pulls across your face when you see all the monsters that you love busy in the streets. They all smile back at you, tossing greetings and wishes of quick recoveries your way.
“They love you.” Jungkook whispers into your ear.
“No. They love you, you’re their pumpkin king. I’m just lucky enough to be yours.” You touch the skull details tattooed on the side of his face so he looks at you.
“You’ll be their queen soon.” He reminds you. You lean up to kiss his lips.
“Let’s get something to eat before we go home. I’m famished.” Jungkook sits you on your feet but keeps your hand in his.
Jungkook talks with some of the shop owners and you watch as he gathers all of your favorite things into a basket. Wines, cheeses, and some sweet treats leftover from the night before. You love him so.
You make your way over to a stand selling haunted dolls and look around at all the choices. You’re about to go back to find Jungkook when someone grabs your arm and twists you around.
“You’re so pretty.” The drunken vampire says, the smell of blood thick on his breath. He’s had too much.
“I appreciate your compliment, but I need you to let go of my arm.” You pull away but he doesn’t let go.
“Don’t be that way. Come with me.” He stumbles and almost falls on top of you.
“Get off of me!” You say louder but the vampire doesn’t listen, it’s nails scratching through your skin. You’re about to scream for Jungkook when he’s suddenly there, ripping the vampires hand from your arm.
“May I ask what you think you’re doing? Touching what’s mine?” Jungkook says too calmly.
“I…I didn’t recognize Ms. Y/N…I didn’t realize.” The vampire stumbles over his words.
“Is that your excuse?” Jungkook laughs, the terrifying cackling sound sending tingles through your body.
You know what’s going to happen next, and the thrill alone has you aching between your legs.
“I’m sorry, I’ll never make the mistake again.” The vampire takes a few steps back.
“Immortelle?” Jungkook looks over his shoulder to you. He’s asking a silent question that you already know the answer to. You nod yes as a smile spreads across your face.
“Remember in your next life my friend, to keep your filthy hands off my girl.” Before you can blink his hand is shooting out between them and into the vampires chest cavity. He holds it there a moment so that he can watch the life drain slowly drain from the vampire before he yanks his hand back out holding the still thumping heart in his hand.
The vampire falls to the ground in a lifeless heep, his eyes still open and eternally full of the fear he last experienced. The crowd around the market doesn’t take offense, they know if their pumpkin kills someone it was for a damn good reason.
Jungkook turns towards you, handing the heart to one of the children playing with the body on the ground. He pats their head and then slowly brings his hand up to his mouth, licking a thick stripe from the bloody palm of his hand to the tip of his middle finger, all while keeping eye contact with you.
You smile, closing the space between the two of you and claiming his mouth. Your tongue seeks out the blood that’s dropped down his chin and around his lips.
“It never gets old…watching you kill for me.” You breathe into his mouth while his blood hands lace into the strands of your hair.
“We need to get home before I show everyone here how well I fuck you.” His mouth leaves hot kisses against your neck as he leads you backwards down the street until your back hits the iron bars of a familiar gate.
Home.
The gate loudly creaks open as soon as it realizes the two of you have arrived. Jungkook stops kissing you to take your hand and walks with you up the stone stairs to the front door that also opens all on its own, the door knocker welcoming you home.
“Do you want to play?” You whisper, making Jungkook pause at the bottom of the stairs. Those tattooed details raising into a smile.
“Okay, immortelle. Let’s play.” He kisses the top of your hand before taking a step back. He slowly slips of his black and white striped suit jacket and unbuttons his shirt before it joins the jacket on the floor.
You soak in the tattooed planes of his body, the muscles begging to be touched. His dark falling over his forehead as he steps back farther into the shadows until he’s completely disappeared from your sight.
“You know what happens if I catch you, immortelle.” His voice floats into your ear from somewhere unknown. “Don’t let me catch you.”
A thrill shoots through your body again and you sprint for the stairs, loving the way the monsters and ghouls grab at your ankles and whisper your name. You immediately turn left at the top of the stairs, your mind going a million miles an hour trying to think of where you could hide.
He knows all of the good places for hiding.
In a last ditch idea, you run into your shared bedroom upon hearing Jungkook’s footsteps running up the stairs. He took this game of chase so seriously and never took it slowly.
You slide under the bed, your chest heaving in fear but also excitement. You’re hoping by hiding somewhere obvious that he won’t even think to look here and waste his time checking all of the usual spots you tend to hide.
“Where are you, immortelle?” You hear his menacing voice out in the hallway coming closer. You almost giggle. “You know I’ll find you. I will always find you.”
You hear his footsteps stop outside the bedroom door and then the door slowly opens right after, lightly hitting against the wall behind it.
Jungkook’s heavy footsteps make the floorboards creak as he walks into the room. You throw a hand over your mouth to keep from making any noises. Jungkook undoes the buckle of his belt and a moment later slips it from his belt loops and lets it clang against the hardwood floor.
“Are you soaked for me right now, my love?” You watch with wide eyes as Jungkook slowly walks around the bed. “I’ll find out soon enough.”
He doesn’t say anything else and when you look around at the floor you notice that he’s no longer next to the bed, his black boots no longer anywhere in sight. You release a long breath of relief.
And then you’re being yanked by the ankle from beneath the bed, a startled scream escaping you as you flip onto your back just in time to see Jungkook trap you with his body against the floor.
“You caught me.” You smile, lifting your hips up to meet his, desperate for friction against your core.
“Don’t I always?” His mouth is on yours, his hands pushing your dress up around your hips.
He was desperate for you too.
“I love you.” You whisper on his lips, the tattooed skeleton grin on his beautiful face turning upwards.
Jungkook sits up on his knees between your legs giving you a full view of his naked torso. Pretty muscles and flawless skin that you ached to leave your mark on. Scratches and bite marks and bruises were the only things that could make him more perfect.
Your chest heaves as you watch him reach behind his back in the band of his black dress pants to retrieve a silver shiny knife. Your pulse quickens immediately.
“Is this what you want, immortelle?” He presses the cold steel flat against the inside of your thigh, keeping the blade from cutting you just yet.
“Will you torture me?” You ask, your hands coming up to cup your breasts with anticipation.
“Absolutely.” Jungkook moves the knife farther up your skin until the point brushes over underwear. You moan pathetically at the feel of it brushing over your center and slowly sliding over onto your other thigh.
“Jungkook…” you sigh.
“Be patient. I’ll give you what you want.” Jungkook uses his other hand to undo the button and zipper of his pants, pushing them down until his perfect cock springs free from the confines.
You bite your lip at the sight in front of you. Jungkook slowly strokes himself to the sight of the knife moving across your skin. He draws the sharp side of the blade oh so gently across your stomach, so sharp you don’t even feel it draw blood. The view of you on display for him makes him groan and move his hand a bit rougher up and down his shaft.
Your fingers move on their own accord, slipping through the small pool of blood on your stomach and moving them back over your breasts to smear the crimson liquid in a trail.
“Fuck. Fuck you’re so perfect.” Jungkook moves the knife to your throat, gently leaving one long cut from one side to the other. You immediately feel warm blood leave the wound and drip down the sides of your neck.
Jungkook drops the knife to the floor and bends over your body to attach his mouth to your neck. He licks and sucks at your blood, whimpering at the taste of it on his tongue. Your body instinctively arches from the ground, your chest rubbing against his and spreading more of your blood between your bodies. It was the most beautiful visual you could imagine.
You looked down between your bodies to see Jungkook’s hand still stroking his cock as he continues to move his mouth down your body to the cut on your stomach. You can barely stand the burn in the pit of your stomach any longer, your desire for the man on top of you smoldering too hot.
“I need you now. Please.” You lace your hands into Jungkook’s hair and lift his face. The sight of his face covered in your blood, his eyes solid black with lust almost does you in completely.
“Such a good girl, saying please.” He moves back onto his knees, squeezing precum from the head of his cock before he releases it completely and picks the knife back up off the floor. You watch in awe as he brings it to his mouth and licks the blood from the blade.
“I always want to be good for you.” You say sweetly. His cock twitches at the sound of your obedient voice.
Jungkook moves the knife down between your legs and ever so carefully pressed the sharp blade to your underwear and drags it down until the fabric slices apart and reveals your absolutely drenched pussy to him. The knife clangs to the floor again and Jungkook leans back down to claim your mouth, his thumb immediately finding your clit.
Your lips part to moan and his tongue swipes against yours swallowing up all the sounds that escape you. The dripping head of his cock suddenly swipes through your folds and causes a high pitched whine to bubble up your throat.
“Is your pussy desperate to be filled, immortelle?” His hand swipes the blood on your stomach before it’s back on his cock, the blood lubing his shaft to make it easier when he fucks himself into you.
“Yes. It hurts, Jungkook.” You let your hands wander his chest and stomach, watching him watch you.
“I’m not going to last long once I get inside your perfect pussy, my love. But I need you to cum and I need you to scream.” Without warning he roughly spears himself inside you, his hands holding you on his cock as you writhe from the sudden intrusion.
“Oh my fucking god.” Your eyes roll to the back of your head when he starts to move, rough and hard.
“Made for me. I literally had you made just for me and you’re perfect. So fucking perfect and pliant just for me.” Jungkook’s hand comes down to your throat, careful of the cut across your skin, he gently tightens his grip.
You immediately see stars, wrapping both of your hands around his wrist to keep him in place. You gasp and moan at the feeling of him controlling your breathing and ruining your pussy at the same time.
“I’m going to come. God I’m coming right now.” The words are quiet as he continues to hold your throat but he hears you just fine, moving his hand from your throat to play with your clit.
“Scream. I need you to scream so I can fill you up.” You open your eyes to see Jungkook watching you, his hair sweaty and mouth parted. Just when you’re about to beg for a kiss he punches your clit between his fingers and your orgasm rolls through you like a hurricane.
Black and white sparks explode behind your eyes and though you can’t hear yourself, you know that you scream loud and high pitched. Just what Jungkook needs to find his own end, dropping on top of you as he continues to fill you past the brim and onto your thighs.
Dried blood scratches between your skin and his as he lies on top of you, his head against your chest and your hands roaming the expanse of his broad shoulders.
“You’re okay, immortelle?” He finally asks through his heavy breathing.
“I am, of course.” You lift his face to place a kiss to his lips.
“We didn’t even make it to the bed this time.” He laughs lightly, groaning as he pulls out and helps you sit up with him.
“I didn’t mind.” You both smile knowing he feels the same.
“I’ll never mind being with you, immortelle. Never.” He touches your cheek and kisses your lips once more.
“Even if…even if I keep forgetting?”
“Even then. We are simply meant to be, my love.”

Masterlist
imagine transmigrating as yuu in twisted wonderland, waking up in your favourite game with the fictional love of your life standing, breathing, alive right in front of you, not so fictional anymore.
every day is like a new adventure, you try your hardest to get his attention, trying to woo him in any way possible, striking up conversation, joining him in his hobbies, or just simply staring at him in fondness from across the room.
he's flattered, immensely, but it's also slightly overwhelming for him. it's not every day someone you barely know puts so much attention on you. he can't quite understand it, you don't give him a very good reason why you'd have such feelings for him, and of course, he wouldn't know how hearing his voice in the morning would give you the energy to make it through the day, how you emptied your wallets just so you could have his cards, how you longed to feel warmth in his arms in those lonesome moments. you don't expect him to understand your intense admiration for him, but it still pricks your heart when he puts up barriers between the two of you, when he turns down your advances or turns away from you.
still, you persist in your efforts. your feelings for him would never change, but you do try toning your advances down. you keep your fangirling more hidden, putting up polite smiles and nods when you pass by him in hallways, even though your heart would be thumping so loudly you almost couldn't hear him.
slowly, but surely, he starts seeing you as a friend, and maybe even something more. there's something irresistible about someone who always stands by your side, whether or not his actions were right or not, you'd be there to offer him support, cheering him on in whatever his goals were.
he decided you were growing on him, but he still couldn't fully trust you.
but then came the overblot battle. you knew it would happen, you tried to stop things from going out of hand but there's very little a magicless prefect can do to stop teenage boys from provoking each other until someone's untapped trauma gets unleashed. it's different than the games, it's not just tapping characters on a screen to fight, you're standing there next to everyone, next to him, feeling the overblot air weighing down on your body, the overblots attacks are unpredictable and you keep having to dodge at the last minute.
and when you see an attack going towards him, you don't even think about yourself, your body moving on its own to shield him from the incoming blow because you want nothing more than for him to be safe.
you feel the sharp pain in your head, you feel yourself falling, then cradled by strong arms. the pain is mind-splitting, and you barely manage to open your eyes to see if he's injured
his pupils are dilated, worry written all over his face, but he seems unscathed
"you're okay..."
you find some comfort in that fact, and everything fades to black
he can't believe he even doubted you for a second. how could he not realise you were genuinely attracted to him? to the extent that you, defenceless and inexperienced in magic, would shield him from the attack?
when the overblot ends, he takes you to the infirmary as soon as possible. he nurses you, visits you every day, bringing you flowers and such hoping you'd recover soon. he promises himself he'd be truthful this time, he'd treasure you and be there for you just like you were for him.
he never expects the words that come out of your mouth when you wake up.
"...who are you?"
you had forgotten the one person who was the object of your affection.

Cole Brookstone Headcannons!
There's quite a lot so enjoy ^^
Tumblr media
First of all, I headcannon that he's Filipino
One of the tallest ninja, Zane is just a little taller
His favourite colours are black, orange, and green
One of the reasons he grew out his hair is because his mother was the one who always trimmed it for him before she died
He also grew it out to hide his ghost scar
He's a MASSIVE gym rat
The guy is absolutely shredded, and legit built like a greek god so rest assured this man has a jacked-up physique
He has a pair of orange/silver headphones he takes almost everywhere with him
A very good dancer, and also has such a beautiful singing voice (he never sings in public)
He plays the drums and guitar
He's definitely the therapist friend (along with Pixal, Zane and Nya)
He sometimes feels a little lonely, especially since almost all of his friends are in relationships (more or less lmao) and he sometimes wishes he had someone like that to confide in
He's bi, hasn't got a particular preference but he also doesn't usually date
He gives the best hugs
Cole's a pretty chill guy, but mess with his friends n he'll pound you into oblivion
He's closest with Jay and Kai, but can actually find himself venting to Zane or Nya all the time
When Lloyd was younger he used to take him to candy shops because he felt bad about rubbing it in his face when they first met
He probably has the closest relationship with Master Wu, except for Lloyd bc their family obviously
He and Vania sometimes stay up all night playing prime empire. She's an absolute boss at the game and Cole's determined to be better than her
He cannot cook to save his life, but something about the instant noodles he always has hits different hehe
Thank you so much for reading!! Lmk if you want me to do any other characters <3

The new trilogy means we finally got official French translations of the fifth and sixth games (the fourth already had one) so I did my thing and played through them, since they're always a lot of fun. Here are some things about French Dual Destinies I thought you might like to know:
Yes, it's set in France as per usual. They are all French people who live in Paris. And yes, that means that in this universe there is a Japanese village themed around yokai within throwing distance of Paris.
Athena lived in America in this version, and therefore peppers her speech with English and Spanish. My favourite unhinged franglais line was "let's get au travail" which I will be using from now on because it's hilarious
Many characters got French pun names again. Simon's name is "Jack Lamenoire" -- Jack, because the French version of Simon Says uses the name Jack/Jacques, and "lame noire" means "black blade". (Also he's not British or anything in this version, he just speaks in somewhat old-timey French.)
He has multiple nicknames for the judge that are all slight variations of "Your Baldness". He doesn't do that "-dono" suffix thing but he does refer to Phoenix in particular as "Maître Wright".
...I don't like pointing out things I didn't like buuuuuut his voice is a huge downgrade. Actually, to be honest, I don't like the new French voices that much in general... idk man they just don't sound very enthusiastic...
Filch's name is "Arsène Loupet", reference to the famous fictional thief Arsène Lupin, which I thought was pretty cool! (Herlock Sholmes was also a reference to that series too btw!)
Athena and Apollo use informal pronouns for each other pretty much from the get-go, but there have been some changes from the previous games: Phoenix now uses the informal "tu" for Apollo (and Athena) whereas in the prev game he didn't, Pearl now uses "tu" for Phoenix as well, and Klavier uses "tu" for Apollo now (but Apollo still calls him the formal "vous" lmao)
SPEAKING OF... SPEAKING OF. The French localisation continues to utterly baffle me when it comes to Klavier (or Konrad as he's called in French). No listen, liSTEN. In the previous game he was specifically stated to be English and did his law exams in England and dropped English words into his speech (and this is still the case in the trilogy version, I checked). But now?? They seem to have gone back on it and in this game he says he's German again, like the in English translation??? But he's still dropping English words into his speech randomly????? Look I already went through the five stages of grief when I found out they'd english-ified him, I made my peace with it, and NOW they change it???????
God and his new French voice sucks too (his old one was actually good)... what have they done to you my poor boy, was making you English not bad enough T_T Oh and he and Athena didn't even get their little language club moment where they both start speaking in the same foreign language?? Like, that just straight-up didn't happen here and I had been waiting for it aauuugh it's cool it's fine it's cool i'm okay i'm--
True to Dual Destinies fashion, there are still typos. In an emotional moment, Apollo took a leave of asbence from the office. Not absence. Asbence.
I can't put my finger on it but Robin's coming out scene felt more... respectful in French? The English translation was done over a decade ago so it feels somewhat dated, maybe that's why... I obviously don't know if she was purposely written to be a trans girl but she very much comes across that way, and it feels like the French translators were aware of that interpretation and took it into account, idk maybe it's just me
THEY GOT RID OF MY FAVOURITE LINE. THE FORESHADOWEY ONE WHERE SIMON TELLS ATHENA THAT THE PERSON SHE WANTS TO SAVE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD DOESN'T DESIRE HER DEFENCE, AND HE'S CLEARLY TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF. THE FRENCH MADE HIM SAY SOMETHING ELSE WAY LESS COOL. I don't wanna be like "FRENCH TURNABOUT ACADEMY IS DEAD TO ME" because most of it was awesome, but man these occasional things made me wanna flip tables
Cosmic Turnabout and Turnabout for Tomorrow were great in French though, so there's that. Clay's French name is "Pierre" which worked surprisingly well because it means stone or rock, and the moon rock was also called that, so like, the phantom had to kill Pierre in order to get the pierre... idk it worked and it was cool
Simon and Athena switch to using informal pronouns for each other very near the end of the game, in the scene where they work together to psychologically mess with the phantom. It's around the time when they start openly calling each other by first name since everyone knows now that they're old friends.
Phoenix and Edgeworth also occasionally refer to each other by first name in this game, which threw me off completely. (Reminder that Edgeworth's French name is "Benjamin Hunter". Just picture Phoenix standing in front of Edgeworth and calling him BENJAMIN. Now you understand how absolutely bizarre it felt.)
Here's the entirety of The Dissin' of Phoenix Wright in French

Crossing Enemy Lines
Chapter Four
Luke Hughes x Original Character
Tumblr media
Warnings:Cursing
November 13th, 2023
The shrill sound of an alarm pierces through Luke’s dreams startling him awake.
He groans, burying his head into the soft hotel pillow, trying to drown out the noise.
Just as he’s about to drift off again, he feels a hand on his shoulder shaking him awake.
“Luke come on man, we got less than 15 minutes until we need to be downstairs for team breakfast!” Alex urges, his voice carrying a pressing tone, behind the thick Swedish accent.
Luke’s eyes snap open, taking a moment to process his roommate's words, “Shit, okay, I’m up, I’m up” he mumbles, throwing the covers off his body and stumbling out of bed.
Luke rushes to the bathroom, quickly brushing his teeth, and relieving himself, before throwing on a pair of jeans and a hoodie.
He quickly grabs his phone and room key and meets Alex by the door. The two make their way down to the hotel restaurant with less than a minute to spare.
The room is already buzzing with activity as teammates scatter around various tables, loading up their plates with eggs, bacon, and an assortment of fruits and pastries.
Luke and Alex grab their food, and find two seats at a table, with Jack, Dawson, Nate, Nico, Jesper, and Timo.
"Well, well, well, look who decided to grace us with their presence," Dawson teases as Luke and Alex sit down.
“Shut it, Mercer. Not all of us can be morning people like you.” Luke grumbles, shoveling a forkful of eggs into his mouth.
“Ignore him Hughesy,” Nate chimes in, a teasing smile plastered across his lips “He’s just jealous because he knows he’ll never be as pretty as you, even with a few extra minutes of beauty sleep.”
The table erupts with laughter, and the conversation flows easily as they eat, discussing  t he drills they'll most likely run during practice, which is set to begin shortly after they finish their meal.
Then talk shifts to their upcoming game against the Red Wings, set for later tonight.
“Nico, you think you can sneak a few extra pucks past Lyon tonight?” Jack asks, nudging the Devils captain.
Nico grins “I’ll do my best.”
“Hopefully tonight’s not another shitshow like Thursday against the Rangers” Dawson murmurs.
The mention of the Rangers causes a slight pang in Luke’s chest, his mind immediately drifting to Jordan.
He discretely pulls his phone out, hiding it under the table, scrolling through his notifications, searching for a response to the message he had sent her last night.
Nothing.
His heart sinks a little as he stares at the screen wishing for a little blue dot to appear next to her name.
“Who you texting Rusty? Your girlfriend?” Nate teases, leaning closer to try and catch a glimpse of Luke’s phone.
Luke quickly presses the side button, causing the screen to go black, and shoves the phone back into his pocket. “No one, and I don’t have a girlfriend.” Luke mutters
“Ooh, someone’s getting defensive. I think he has a girl” Nate grins, earning a few chuckles from the rest of the table.
"Come on, Hughesy, spill the beans," Dawson chimes in, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Who's the lucky lady?"
“There’s no lucky lady, I don’t have a girlfriend, now drop it” Luke states
“Come on boys, leave the kid alone” Timo interjects “If he says there's no girl, then there's no girl."
“Besides we have more important things to focus on, like tonight's game” Nico adds
There’s a murmur of agreement around the table before the conversation shifts back to hockey.
But Luke can’t shake the feeling of  disappointment settling in his stomach
He sent the text 11 hours ago. Why hasn’t she texted back? Is it too late? Was it all just in his head?
He shakes his head, trying to regain his focus as the rest of the team finish their breakfast, his appetite suddenly lost.
But even as he moves in sync with the rest of his teammates, placing their dishes in their designated spot, and moving towards the lobby, where they prepare to take their team bus to the rink, he can't fully ignore the dull ache in his chest, the nagging sense that he might have already lost his chance with Jordan before it even really began.
*****
The clock reads 11:03 AM when Jordan’s eyes finally flutter open. She reaches for her phone squinting at the bright screen as she unlocks it.
A text from her long time best friend Brooke, sent late last night, catches her attention first. She quickly types out a response, promising to call her later.
As she hits send, she navigates back to the inbox on iMessages, when another notification catches her eye.
Her heart skips a beat looking at the blue dot next to Luke’s name and a timestamp reading 10:43PM.
With trembling fingers, she opens the text, her breath catching in her throat as she reads the two simple words: I’m sorry.
A flurry of emotions wash over her-relief, happiness, nervousness.
She sits up in her bed, her mind racing as she tries to craft the perfect response.
It's okay, she types out, then immediately deletes it. Is it okay? She's not sure.
Me too, she tries, but that sounds too dry.
I’m sorry, Luke.  No that’s too formal, and literally the same thing he said.
After a few more attempts she settles on Me too, can we talk? Her heart pounds as she hits send, the weight of the words hanging heavy in the air.
She stares at her phone, waiting for the three little dots to appear. But as the minutes tick by, the screen remains frustratingly blank.
Jordan tries to distract herself, scrolling through social media, checking her email, even getting up to pace around her room. But every few seconds, her eyes dart back to her phone, hoping to see a response from Luke.
Thirty minutes pass. Then an hour. Still nothing.
A sigh escapes her lips as she realizes she can’t spend the entire day waiting for him to text back.
She goes through the motions of her morning routine-brushing her teeth, washing her face, getting dressed-but the whole time her mind is preoccupied with thoughts of Luke.
A sigh escapes her lips as she finally forces herself out of bed, realizing that she can't spend the entire day waiting for a text that might never come. She goes through the motions of her morning routine - brushing her teeth, washing her face, getting dressed - but her mind is still preoccupied with thoughts of Luke.
*****
After a draining morning skate, Luke showers and changes at the rink, before hopping in an uber with Jack, Nate, Alex, Dawson and John, to grab some lunch.
They arrive at a local restaurant, settling into a booth and placing their orders.
As soon as the waiter leaves, Luke pulls out his phone, his heart skipping a beat when he sees a text from Jordan.
Jordan: Me too. Can we talk?
Luke quickly types out a response.
Luke: I’d like that.
Jordan's reply is almost instant.
I’m glad you texted
Luke: Me too, I’m really sorry about the way things played out, hockey been a huge part of my life, for well forever and I just let it cloud my judgment when I shouldn’t have
Jack nudges Luke, raising an eyebrow. "What's got you smiling at your phone like that?"
Dawson leans over, trying to catch a glimpse of the screen. "Texting your girlfriend again, Rusty?"
Luke rolls his eyes, quickly locking his phone. "No, just one of my friends. I don't have a girlfriend, Dawson."
Dawson holds up his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. Just asking."
Luke's phone beeps again, and he can't resist checking the message.
Jordan: It’s okay, I get things are a little complicated, but I’m not my brother, and I like you alot.
Luke's heart races as he reads her words, his fingers flying over the keyboard.
Luke: I like you too, and I promise from here on out, I won’t treat you like that.
Their food arrives, and Luke manages to grab a fry while still keeping his eyes glued to his phone. The conversation around him fades into the background as he focuses on his text exchange with Jordan.
Jordan: Thanks Luke, so what do we do now?
Luke: We'll figure it out. Maybe we could start with dinner? Just the two of us?
He holds his breath as he waits for her response, absently taking a bite of his burger.
Jordan: I'd like that.
Luke’s about to type another text, when Jack snatches the phone from his hand.
Luke looks up, frustrated and meets his brother's eyes.
“Dude what the hell!” Luke protests, reaching for his phone.
But Jack holds it out of reach and powers it down, “Finish eating then you can have it back”
Luke sighs, looking around the table which has silenced a bit, causing him to flush slightly as he  realizes most of his teammates have finished most of his meals, whereas he’s only taken a singular bite of his burger, and a few fries.
“Fine” Luke grumbles, turning his attention back to his plate, and taking another bite of his burger.
The conversation around the table picks up again, as John starts talking about the movie trailer for the new Hunger Games that came out a few days ago.
"Did you guys see the trailer for the Hunger Games movie?" John asks, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
"Yeah, I did!" Dawson exclaims, "The movie came out a few days ago, yeah?”
“Yeah it did, think the 17th I’m waiting to watch it” John says
"I haven't seen it yet," Alex admits, "I actually haven't seen any of the Hunger Games movies."
The entire table goes silent, and everyone turns to stare at Alex in disbelief.
"Wait, what?" Nate asks, his jaw dropping, "You've never seen the Hunger Games? Like, any of them?"
Alex shrugs, looking a bit sheepish, "No"
"Oh, man," Jack laughs, shaking his head, "you're missing out. Those movies are classics."
"Seriously, Alex," Luke chimes in, "you've gotta watch them. The first one, especially. It's a game-changer."
"Pun intended?" Dawson grins, and the whole table groans at the terrible joke.
"Okay, okay," Alex holds up his hands in surrender, "I'll add it to my list. But you guys have to promise not to spoil anything for me."
"No promises," Nate teases, "I might 'accidentally' let something slip, just to see your reaction."
"You wouldn't dare," Alex narrows his eyes, pointing a warning finger at Nate.
"I don't know, man," John smirks, "I think it would be pretty hilarious to watch you freak out over plot twists that everyone else already knows about."
"I hate you guys," Alex grumbles, but there's a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Aw, come on, you love us," John grins, reaching over to ruffle Alex's hair.
Alex swats his hand away, but he's laughing now too, "Yeah, yeah. But seriously, no spoilers. I want to experience the movies for myself."
"Fair enough," Nate concedes, "but you better watch them soon. We're gonna need someone to geek out with over the new one."
"I'll get right on that," Alex promises, "but only if you guys agree to watch my favorite movie with me in return."
"Depends," Dawson says, eyeing Alex suspiciously, "what's your favorite movie?"
"The Notebook," Alex replies, with a completely straight face.
There's a beat of silence, and then the entire table bursts out laughing.
"Oh my god," Nate wheezes, wiping tears from his eyes, "can you imagine? A bunch of hockey players sitting around, crying over The Notebook?"
"Hey, don't knock it till you've tried it," Alex defends, but he's grinning too, clearly enjoying the reaction he's gotten.
"Alright, alright," Luke concedes, still chuckling, "we'll watch The Notebook with you, Alex.”
"Good" Alex smirks, echoing Nate's earlier words
*****
Luke returns to the hotel around 2pm and only then does Jack give him back his phone. He knows he should probably take a pre-game nap, sticking to his routine, but he would much rather talk to Jordan.
So as Alex settles in for his nap, Luke slips out of their room and heads down to the lobby, seeking a quiet corner where he can call Jordan in private.
He finds a secluded spot near the hotel's business center, pulls out his phone, and searches for her contact before hitting the call button, his heart racing as he listens to the ring.
"Hello?" Jordan's voice comes through the speaker, sending a thrill down Luke's spine.
"Hey, it's me," Luke says, a smile spreading across his face. “Sorry I didn’t respond I was with my team and my brother was being a dick”
Jordan laughs on the other line, “It’s okay I’m glad you called”
“Me too, so we were talking about dinner?” Luke says
“Yeah, when are you free?” Jordan asks
“What about Saturday night?” Luke suggests, knowing the Devils have a back to back the 16th and the 17th meaning, by league rules, they will have the 18th off.
“Saturday works” She says
“Cool, uh there’s this great restaurant about 10 minutes outside of Manhattan, called Velvet & Vine. I can pick you up?” Luke suggests, hoping she likes the idea.
“Sure, that sounds great” Jordan replies, and Luke can hear the smile in her voice.
“How’s 8pm sound?” Luke proposes, mentally crossing his fingers.
“Works for me” Jordan confirms, and Luke feels a rush of excitement.
"It's a date," he says, then quickly realizes  considering they haven’t technically established that yet. "I mean, not a date-date. Unless you want it to be. I just meant-"
Jordan laughs, cutting off his rambling. "Luke, relax. It's a date. I want it to be."
Luke feels his cheeks heat up, but he's grinning like an idiot. "Okay. Good. Me too."
There's a comfortable pause, and then they continue talking, the conversation flowing easily as they share more about their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and passions.
Luke learns that Jordan loves to paint in her free time, and Jordan discovers that Luke has a secret talent for solving Rubik's cubes.
Before they know it, an hour has passed, and Luke realizes he needs to start getting ready for the game.
"Hey, Jordan, I’m sorry to cut this short, but I gotta get ready for my game.” he says apologetically.
"Of course.  Go, do your thing. And Luke?" Jordan says, her voice warm.
"Yeah?"
"Good luck tonight. I'll be rooting for you," she says softly, and Luke feels a surge of warmth in his chest.
"Thanks, Jordan," he replies, meaning every word.
They say their goodbyes, and as Luke hangs up, he can't wipe the smile off his face. He heads back to his room, feeling lighter than he has in days.
He changes into his game day suit, the grin never leaving his lips.
As Alex starts to stir from his nap, Luke busies himself with his own pre-game rituals, double-checking his bag to make sure he has everything he needs.
"You seem chipper," Alex notes, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Good nap?"
"Something like that," Luke replies cryptically, his smile widening.
They gather their things and head down to the lobby to meet the rest of the team, ready to board the bus to the arena.
*****
The puck drops in Little Caesars arena and the game is underway, but before the Devils can even find their footing, the Red Wings score two quick goals, less than a minute apart, leaving Luke and his teammates stunned.
On the bench, Coach Ruff is fuming, his face turning a shade of red that rivals the winged wheel on the opponent's jersey. "Wake up out there!" he shouts, slamming his hand against the boards. "We can't let them dictate the pace like this!"
Luke grits his teeth, determined to turn the tide. He throws himself into the play, battling for every inch of ice, every loose puck.
And then, with just minutes left in the first period, Jesper finds the back of the net, giving the Devils a much-needed boost heading into the intermission.
Miles away in New York, Jordan sits in her room, her laptop balanced on her knees as she watches the game. She has her headphones in, the sound of the commentators' voices filling her ears.
As the second period begins, the Red Wings strike again, extending their lead to 3-1. Jordan bites her lip, her fingers tightening around the edge of her laptop.
The Devils manage to score another goal, cutting the deficit to just one heading into the third period.
Jordan is on the edge of her seat now, her eyes glued to the screen. She watches as the teams trade goals, the score tying up at 3-3, then 4-4.
With just three minutes left in regulation, Luke gets the puck on his stick. He weaves through the defenders, his skates cutting through the ice like blades. And then, with a flick of his wrist, he sends the puck soaring past the goaltender and into the net.
Jordan leaps to her feet, a shout of joy escaping her lips, before quickly clamping her mouth shut with her hand.
Underneath she's grinning from ear to ear, her heart swelling as she watches Luke celebrate with his teammates.
The final buzzer sounds, and the Devils won.
In the locker room, Luke is still riding high on the adrenaline of his game-winning goal. He showers and changes quickly, fielding questions from the media with a grin on his face.
As he finally makes his way back to his stall, he grabs his phone, his heart skipping a beat when he sees a text from Jordan.
Jordan: Nice goal :)
A smile spreads across Luke’s face.

I've also gotten help from outsiders like Sleepy (prologue music + vfx) and my friend Gumjamin (main menu heart animation).
For VOs, Alex Ross voices Crux, Devin McLaughlin voices Vincenzo, Christian Cruz voices Black, Maganda Marie voices Grete, and Zoe D. Lee voices Missy.
Basically, it's mostly just me & outsourcing stuff to my friends and professionals.
How can I support Reanimated Heart?
You can pay for the game, or join our monthly Patreon! If you don't have any money, just giving it a nice rating and recommending it to a friend is already good enough. :)
Where do the funds go to?
100% gets poured back into the game. More voice acting, more music, more trailers, more art, etc. I also like to give my programmer a monthly tip for helping me.
This game is really my insane passion project, and I want to make it better with community support.
I live in the Philippines and the purchasing power of php is not high, especially since many of the people I outsource to prefer USD. (One time I spent P10k of my own money in one month just to get things.) I'll probably still do that, even if no money comes in, until I'm in danger of getting kicked out the street… but maybe even then? (jk)
What platforms will it be released in?
Itch and then Steam when it's fully finished. Still looking into other options, as I hear both are getting bad.
Will the game be free?
Chapter 1 will be free. The rest will be updated on Patreon exclusively until full release.
Are you doing a mobile version?
Yeah. Just Android for now, but it's in the works.
Where can I listen to the OST?
It is currently up on YouTube, Spotify, and Bandcamp!
Why didn't you answer my ask?
A number of things! Two big ones that keep coming up are Spoilers (as in, you asked something that will be put in an update) or it's already been asked. If you're really dying to know, check the character tags or the meta commentary. You might find what you're looking for there. :)

I have now finally seen the Mario movie. It was Pretty Good. Here are my wordy thoughts on it. (I am going to spoil the entire movie. Duh.)
In many ways, the Mario movie does what I wish the first Sonic movie had done. They just took the characters and the premise and the world from the games, and made it a straightforward animated adventure movie. It's bright and colorful and remixes things JUST enough to include fun elements from multiple games, and it doesn't make Mario get adopted by James Marsden or whatever. It even has the music!
That's all you really need, right? Right...?
Tumblr media
I'll get this out of the way up front. Chris Pratt was fine. He's fine
If anything, it really feels like they did the movie a disservice by letting us hear so little of the Mario voice in the previews. It took one scene for Pratt to disappear into the role for me. It was totally fine. If anything, I found Charlie Day's normal voice coming out of Luigi WAY more distracting, even if I did like him in the role.
Everyone else was pretty good, for the most part. Jack Black was obviously very good as Bowser, but I'm biased. Seth Rogen does the Seth Rogen laughs as Donkey Kong, but I thought DK was fun, too. (I liked his little rivalry with Mario where he was just constantly giving him shit.) The only casting choice I truly hated was Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. I hated every line that came out of his mouth. He sounds atrocious. Just the worst. I swear to fucking god if they do a DKC movie and we have to hear him for 90 minutes
I did think Peach was lacking, but that was on the script, not Anya Taylor-Joy's performance. It's cool to see Peach fight, but it's one of those all too common instances where the writers put so much effort into making the main girl kick ass and be an effortlessly confident girlboss that they forgot to give her an actual personality. Not that I'd point to Super Princess Peach and its mood swing superpowers as positive representation or anything, but there's a happy middle ground, surely. Shrek was 22 years ago, just having the princess do flying kung fu kicks isn't enough.
Okay. With the voices out of the way, let's talk about the big picture:
It's way better than the words "Illumination Mario movie" implied, and I mostly enjoyed my time with it. The spirit of Mario is there 100%. But I'd also describe it as "ruthlessly efficient."
This was perhaps the main complaint critics had, and they were absolutely right. People have responded to these totally average reviews with "Well, what did you expect? Shakespeare?! It's MARIO!!" Like, yes, I would prefer it if the movie I paid to see had writing that was good instead of bad. What a shocker. My issue isn't that it's not "high-brow" enough. The problem is that it feels mercenary. It feels like an editor went through and deleted almost every line of dialogue that isn't some form of exposition, at the expense of the pacing. Any scene that's not a montage or some sort of action is kept as short as they could make it, with barely any room for embellishment, character interaction, or anything other than the bare minimum word count to hit all the typical Save the Cat Hollywood screenwriting 101 story beats to the letter. There aren't even as many jokes as you might think (and the ones that are there are extremely hit or miss, including a lot of the slapstick with Mario himself).
Tumblr media
Mario and Peach's little arc together in the front half of the film is probably the worst example of this pacing. Even having read reviews that complained about how fast Peach goes from meeting Mario (by her admission the first other human she's ever met) to deciding to train him as the new savior of the Mushroom Kingdom, I was SHOCKED at how fast it was. They don't even lampshade it.
Peach takes Mario straight into the big training sequence where he learns how to use mushrooms and jump over platforming obstacles. Peach is apparently already a hypercompetent platforming pro and a great fighter, so there's no clear reason why she's taking the time to train this random guy to be half as good as her when the world is in danger. Then they set off on their adventure, Toad joins them, and we get a VERY brief travel montage. It's about thirty seconds total - just long enough to give Peach a line about how she wants to protect this beautiful world of hers to try and give her some stakes. We get the genre-mandated nighttime campfire heart to heart, which is exactly long enough to have Mario say he misses Luigi and to have Peach give the two sentence summary of her origin story and not a second longer. Then they reach the Kongs, and their big journey is complete. (They barely interact for the rest of the movie.) So much of the movie is like this - always ready to get on to the next scene as soon as a new one starts.
I'm not criticizing the script because I expect The Super Mario Bros. Movie to be a prestige drama - although there are certainly halfhearted attempts at a dramatic arc. The stuff with Mario's family was a fun enough idea, but again, ruthless efficiency. We get one quick scene with them at the start to give Mario some pathos, because I guess Save the Cat said he's gotta have some pathos. And then Mario gets his dad's approval amidst the action of the final battle in Brooklyn to resolve his arc, just so the movie can end as quickly as possible once Bowser is defeated. (Despite now having the approval of their family and their community back in Brooklyn, Mario and Luigi move to the Mushroom Kingdom off-screen without a single word dedicated to this decision, because that's where they live in the games.)
Look. I am not comparing it to The Godfather. Don't give me that shit. I am not asking for an extra half hour to explore Mario and Luigi's childhood trauma. I am not asking for the complex inner workings of the Mushroom Kingdom monarchy. I know this is gonna be a basic Hero's Journey adventure for kids. It just feels like it's turning down so many opportunities to have a little fun with the characters, to let them interact and play off of each other, to let there be some adventure on this adventure. This is the first time we've gotten to see these characters interact with fully voiced dialogue in a very, very long time! "Yeah, it's not High Art, but it's FUN!" Stories are fun! Character interactions are fun! The script could be having so much more fun!! It is adamantly against making the Story parts of this story-driven movie any more Fun than they functionally need to be!!!
Mario, Peach, and Toad's journey to find the Kongs is shorter than the training montage that precedes it. After the opening, Bowser mostly just sits in his castle and waits for the third act to start. Luigi's there, too, but he only gets one scene with Bowser and then the movie mostly forgets he exists until the climax. He doesn't even get to try and sneak out of Bowser's castle and get up to hijinx. He's just there to be a motivation for Mario, so he sits in a cage for half the movie. It's the bare outline of a script with action scenes added in.
Tumblr media
Aside from the fact that it's Jack Black singing as Bowser, I feel like this overly-efficient script might be part of the reason why the "Peaches" scene stands out so much. It's a moment that didn't strictly need to be there to keep the plot moving or to provide an action setpiece. It's not even a reference to another Mario thing. It's just a fun and memorable little character moment that's there for its own sake. That's what the movie needed more of. To stop and smell the roses more often. To play in the space.
To be clear, this isn't a unique problem with this movie. Critics have been noting for years that second acts are disappearing from big Hollywood movies in favor of the Act I plot setup and the Act III action, even though Act II is supposed to be where you get to explore your actual premise. And lots of animated movies give me this exact same vibe of being too "screenwriterly," or feeling like they had an executive breathing down their necks and demanding changes based on focus testing. But these common issues are why I come away mostly feeling like the movie is on the better end of "average," rather than totally blowing my mind. You have seen this movie many times before, just not with Mario in it.
And, of course, there's the music. The score by Brian Tyler based on various classic Mario and Donkey Kong tunes (frustratingly all attributed to Koji Kondo) is absolutely beautiful, but it's unfortunately frequently overshadowed by the licensed music. Everyone already complained about things like the use of Take On Me in place of a lovingly arranged DKC medley, but it feels illustrative of the tug of war the movie is caught in the middle of, between wanting to be a lavishly faithful Mario movie and wanting to be a generic tentpole animated adventure movie. Every single licensed song used is the most obvious, overused song they could have picked for the scene. It reeks of cynical executive meddling and it took me out of the movie every time.
Tumblr media
But there really was a lot of care and love put into this movie - more than probably any other video game movie ever made, not that that's a high bar. I don't want to underplay that too much amidst all my complaints spurred by the absolutely insane response to the reviews.
Aside from the countless background references that people will be picking apart for years, touches like the Captain Toad tune playing in the background of Toad's introduction or the Mario Kart 8 menu music playing in the kart garage really help bring it to another level of authenticity. I also enjoyed seeing some more obscure Mario enemies that felt like they were picked more for being fun to animate than for being nostalgic and marketable. No matter how many times I sarcastically pointed to the screen and deadpanned "reference. reference." I am not immune to noticing these things and smiling. I am not immune to the DK Rap. These alone don't make the movie good, but it's nice to have a video game movie that feels like it was made by people who like video games.
Most importantly, the animation is great throughout. It's leaps and bounds ahead of other Illumination work, and it's the best the Mario cast has ever looked. They even made Donkey Kong handsome, somehow. They're all so squishy and expressive, and they move so fluidly - especially in the action scenes. I particularly liked the more kinetic ones like the aerial Banzai Bill chase and the Mario Kart sequence. Truly, the Mad Max-inspired car battle on Rainbow Road where Mario literally does the speedrun shortcut is this movie firing on all cylinders.
Other, more hand-to-hand fights nail the Popeye-esque vibe Mario should be going for. He's an underdog who gets the shit kicked out of him by bigger, stronger opponents until he gets his signature powerup and turns the tables on them. My favorite animation of all probably came from the use of Cat Mario to turn the tide in the DK fight. They had so much fun making Mario move like a cat. Again, it feels like a choice made because it'd be fun to animate rather than just a nostalgia move.
It's that animation and that attention to detail that carry the film, really. They elevate it from mediocrity into being a fun watch for a fan like me, albeit one I couldn't help but pick apart with Anthony as we watched it at home. I'm glad I saw it, but there's a lot of room to improve with the inevitable sequel. I hope they do. I can't deny that I had fun with the movie, but I hope next time that fun is partially because of the script instead of in spite of it.
Stray thoughts:
Overall, I would say I enjoyed the movie a lot more than Sonic 1, but probably not as much as Sonic 2. Not that these movies need to be pitted against each other.
I hated the Luma. I hated how hilarious they clearly thought the Luma was. They have the fucking Luma break the fourth wall to end the movie and start the credits. This is going to be a deep cut for fans of bad animated films, but the whole time I was just thinking of the little fish from Romeo & Juliet: Sealed With A Kiss who's just the director's kid saying random nonsense. You know I'm right
I rolled my eyes at the "our princess is in another castle" joke and several other jokes that would have been dated in a gamer webcomic 20 years ago but I guess they had to be there
How much of Brooklyn did Bowser's giant floating castle take out? We know 9/11 happened in this universe because the Freedom Tower is there, hasn't New York been through enough
I can't believe there's a Diskun easter egg
The dog is the most Illumination character design in the movie. It felt like it wandered on set from The Secret Life of Pets
Mario being a gamer and playing Kid Icarus of all things just made me remember this tweet:
Tumblr media
Yes Anthony did get mad at me for being thirsty for Bowser

Okay, so. I had this really cute idea that player/MC/(Y/N) is playing GoGM and Jack gets jealous. After all, why play a game about a ghost when his sunshine has a perfect loving ghost right here? Spicy implications but nothing directly explicit. Short (~1030 words) because I’m just getting back into writing and stretching the creative muscles. Criticism and feedback are welcome!
The Groom of Gallagher Mansion and Something’s Wrong with Sunny Day Jack are both 18+ games, minors DNI! Thank you!
--- Leg bouncing excitedly, I adjust my headphones over my ears and grin at the familiar music. Both spooky and jovial, I hum along as I admire the tattered blue wallpaper on the game’s title screen, decorated with roses. The momentary blackness as I begin a new game seems far too long. Taking a gulp from the water bottle Jack had so kindly left on my desk earlier, I let out a tiny, excited cheer and began clicking through dialogue.   Having just recently added voice acting with the new update, I’ve been eager to play all week. Listening along, one line causes me to chuckle.  ‘G-g-g-ghost clown?! No!’ ‘Poor Taylor would be screwed knowing me, poor guy.’  I think to myself, lifting one side of my headphones. The sound of splashing and happy humming from the kitchen told me Jack was still doing dishes, so I fixed the device back on my ear and smiled. ‘Thankfully, my ghost clown isn’t too scary.’  Moving through the familiar dialogue, my character begins their performance and I can’t help but follow suit, dramatically laying the back of my hand to my forehead. “Alas, my poor aching heart!” I grin, leaning back with a theatrical flourish. Before I can give my next line, I hear Jack’s heavy footsteps approach. “Sunshine?” He leans against the doorway, broad shoulders on display in his normal white shirt, his jacket presumably left somewhere in the kitchen. “What are you doing?” “Oh, well,” I pause a moment, a tad embarrassed, “I’m playing a game, actually. Did I disturb you?” “No, of course not.” He flashes his signature grin, slipping his gloves back on as he comes to stand beside my chair, glancing down at the screen curiously. “What kind of game?” “Well..” I’ve explained a fair bit of modern technology to Jack in the months we’ve known each other but disclosing the idea of a romance game still seemed somewhat embarrassing. “It’s a… romantic visual novel, which is just as it says. It kind of acts as a choose your own adventure book, with added sounds and visuals.” He nods along and listens intently, though he raises a brow at the mention of romance. “So, what’s this game about then?” At that I grin, nerd brain taking over as I click idly. “It’s about you and your college friend, Taylor, summoning a ghost in a spooky cursed manor. You make choices to see who you end up with, but I always choose Elias.” Coming to the beginning of Elias’ dialogue, I unplug my headphones and raise the volume, smiling as the familiar line echoes from the speakers. “Alack, alack, what blood is this, which stains the stony entrance of this sepulcher?” I mouth along with the words and click through, watching Elias’ ghostly sprite fade into view. As I glance back at Jack he wears an odd expression, furrowed brows and pursed lips forming a slight pout as he stares at the screen. “Jack? What’s wrong?” I return the game’s audio to its normal level and spin my chair to look at him fully. He studies me a moment, warm brown eyes reflecting unknown emotions. Before I have time to process, he grabs my hand and presses a warm kiss to my knuckles. Immediately my face turns a bright shade of red, heat emanating from my ears as I stutter. “I- you… Why?” Smiling lovingly, he lowers my hand and brings his gloved one to my cheek, brushing his thumb against it. He brings his face closer, pressing his forehead against mine. “Why play a game when I’m right here, Sunshine? Fantasies can be fun, but too much can be bad for you.” His hot breath fans across my face, blue hair tickling my cheek. His body is so warm looming over me. “Maybe you should take a break?~” He hums, tilting my chin upward slowly, taking a single breath to examine my flustered state before pressing his lips to mine. All at once soft and sweet and intoxicating, I find myself leaning into him, reaching upward to hold his hand on my cheek and wrap my arm around his neck. Locked together like this, we kiss until my lungs begin to burn, aching for breath. I pull back first, taking a great gasping breath as I recover. Looking up at him, his cheeks are dusted a light red and his breathing is more ragged than before. My face burns like hot coals as he looks at me, purest love mixed with building desire reflected in his eyes. “(Y/N)?” His tone is sweet, and yet it sends a shiver down my spine. “Yes?” He grasps my forearm gently, pulling me from my seat and carefully guiding me to the bed. My heartbeat thumps like distant thunder as he nudges me, motioning to lay upright against the pillows. Within a moment he straddles me, his arms acting as a heavily muscled cage. Leaning down to my neck, he plants a knowing kiss, murmuring into my skin. “I love you.” I gasp at the sensation, craning my neck unconsciously. “I love you, Jack.” With those words he melts into my arms, peppering me with kisses and divine praises. Our bedroom is filled with laughter as I am enveloped in a warm embrace, arms and legs cocooned under his hold. A sunny grin takes over his features as I weakly wiggle, seemingly proud of his capture. “Good.” He chuckles, leaning down to peck my cheek. Rubbing my arm lovingly, I notice his expression shift subtly as he glances back to the computer, still softly looping the game’s background music. “You know… I’d love to show you just how I feel,” he sighs, running his hands over my sides and gently teasing my inner thigh, “but if you’re busy…” I groan, looking back toward my desk and the sprite of Elias waiting patiently on the screen. Looking back at Jack, acknowledging my own arousal, I make up my mind. “I guess it can wait a liiiiiittle longer.” Jack got off the bed, quickly powering down the computer and fixing the desk chair before returning to his perfect, waiting sunshine. He’d make sure to delete that game later.

I'm gonna be honest here:
The Mario movie actually looks really nice. Despite Illumination being known for the somewhat cheap animation it's got (which isn't necessarily bad mind you) you can tell that the studio actually put a lot of effort into the movie just from the trailer alone. You can see the difference in their budget and the passion that the animators have in just the two minutes alone like I was shocked.
The VAing is surprisingly good! Jack Black as Bowser threw me for a loop because I didn't even recognize him! It was only after he'd did the little chuckle and said:
"I do not."
That I caught his voice and realized that it was him. He's done an incredible job with the character and I can't wait to see him in the movie!!!
Chris Pratt on the other hand......
Look I don't know the actor very well other than he's in the Marvel and Jurassic World trilogy but as soon as I heard him talk and say:
"What is this place?"
I couldn't help but feel like he just.....didn't care about his role. It felt like it wasn't Mario at all. Even my mom who's not a fan of video games and only knows the basics of them due to me and my siblings talking to her about, had said that he just wasn't Mario and the voice didn't fit the character. (She also said the same thing when the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer was released and she saw his first design before it was fixed. She literally took one look and said "That's not Sonic.")
Like that says a lot.
Personally I think if Chris Pratt wants to make this work he'd actually have to put a little bit of effort into his role. Or else it just won't really work. That or the studio and Nintendo get a new VA who's more excited to voice Mario.
But other than the voice for our favorite red Italian plumber I gotta say that everything else looks and sounds really good!!! The scenery is phenomenal and stunning and colorful just like the video games and the character's designs look so good and well done!! Honestly kinda excited to see what the movies like when it comes out next year!!! (They better not massacre my boys because like Sonic they deserve some respect as well).
Anyways those are my personal thoughts.

Me Rating the Super Mario Bros movie characters performances (now that the Euphoria of the movie has calmed down)
Spoilers below
Mario:
Tumblr media
Everyone wants to bag on Chris for being Mario. But I will say, He pulled it off well. There was an accent and if you weren’t listening for it, you probably wouldn’t know it was Chris Pratt voicing him. Say what you will, but Chris knows how to voice act the Everyman hero type. That’s Mario. His love for his brother and Captain America levels of determination make him admirable and not stale. The decision to go more for a Brooklyn accent was a nod to the 1980’s show and I appreciate it. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s what was needed for Mario. 7.5/10
Luigi:
Tumblr media
Charlie day was near perfect casting for Luigi. I will be honest, I thought this would just be Charlie day voicing luigi and while funny he usually would teeter on annoying. But for his performance, Luigi had great comedic timing, relatable, supportive and cowardly. It’s honestly captures luigi perfectly. He does get some great lines, I will say the only flaw is how he was sidelined. It felt less like a Mario bros. Movie and more like a Mario and Donkey Kong movie. But in the third act he does bring in some good chops. I do like how they maximized his performance. 8.5/10
Peach:
Tumblr media
Anya Taylor-joy as Peach. So I’m conflicted here. It’s not a bad performance, but I wouldn’t say the voice felt like peach. When Peach has the softer moments and is acting like a ruler, I think she is great. But the first half of the movie, she felt surprisingly cold to Mario. And I get that he is a stranger, but peach’s whole bit is her compassion and care. Peach can kick ass, that’s not the issue (plenty of source material shows she can hold her own) my problem is that she felt like she was missing her sweetness. Near the end we see her soften and it could be argued that Peach wasn’t really feeling sweet because of the situation… but anyone whose played a Mario game knows that’s not an issue. She didn’t need to be a damsel in distress, I just like when my peaches are sweeter. Also I wanted some Mareach. But I’m not gonna reflect that in the rating 5/10.
Donkey Kong
Tumblr media
It’s just Seth Rogen’s voice. Now it’s not an awful performance. But everytime he spoke, I heard Seth. That being said, the character was fine. I liked Mario and DK’s Frenemy dynamic. They clearly butt heads and compete. It’s amusing. That being said, I wish Luigi got more scenes, instead of Seth Kong. He is never irritating, I do enjoy the cockiness and overall flare, but I wish they did something more with it 5/10
Toad:
Tumblr media
Keegan Micheal-key’s Take on Toad is inspired. I found myself enjoying whenever Toad is on screen. I had no worries regarding his performance. But similar to Luigi, he isn’t given much to do. His main thing is a couple of gags and moving the plot along. I love him and wish he had more time given. 8/10
Kamek:
Tumblr media
Kevin Micheal Richardson didn’t just do good in this roll, HE ABSOLUTELY SLAYED as Kamek. The loyal servant/father figure/ hype man of Bowser nails that slimy ness and fear he has for bowser. His dialogue is great, he is also just so much fun on screen. He did not need to go this hard for Kamek, but he did. 9/10
Cranky kong:
Tumblr media
Fred Armisen phoned it in. This didn’t feel at all like Cranky to me. He didn’t even sound old. I’m glad he isn’t in the movie long but it bothered me. It’s just the kind of performance where you aren’t mad, just disappointed
2/10
King Penguin
Tumblr media
Khary Payton, For a character basically made for the movie, he was perfect. My bias on both the Voice actor and Penguins. He had great lines, coming off as epic and comedic. His reaction to the Luma was also glorious. He wasn’t there for too long but he was there the right amount. 8/10
Bowser
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about Jack Black as bowser. It’s perfect casting. Jack black PERFECTLY blended all of the bowser’s together to create in my opinion, the best version of bowser. In a vain similar to how Heath Ledger combined different Joker’s to make his performance. This bowser is intimidating, arrogant, funny, a simp, cruel, and overall everything you want in a kids movie villain. I could write a whole analysis on how this bowser is basically a perfect kids movie villain. But that is for another day. The power ballad alone makes him worthy of 10/10. Easiest 10/10 ranking I’ve made

Please Don't Leave Me | Agent Whiskey x Reader
Summary: The mission goes very wrong.
Warnings: Injuries and angst
Word Count: 1K
A/N: just a quick writing challenge for myself based around the prompt please don't leave me. I put a bunch of characters into a generator and Jack came out and it was honestly the easiest little story to create in 20 minutes. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
There’s a reason you should never mix business with pleasure and it’s because of moments like this that actually remind you why.
It was supposed to be a simple mission. In and out with time for a good night at the hotel after. Just you and Jack doing what you do best. You had been working on and off together for five years now. Screwing each other after missions to let off steam for almost equally as long. Everyone told you not to do it. All the other girls in the office who had ever been seduced by him and left flapping on the shore when the tide went back out; warned you to stay away. But you were sure you could handle it. Told yourself it was just sex and that you wouldn’t fall in love. But he knew how to play the game. Knew how to win you over every time and lull you into a false sense of security to the point you thought, maybe he did care. Maybe he did love you back. But that look in his eye right now as he stood in the doorway, flash drive in hand ready to make a run for it whilst these brutes did everything they could to keep you down.
You hadn’t worried at first, but then you took a bullet to the shoulder and god damn if that didn’t hurt to the point you just wanted to hide in the corner and cry; but you couldn’t. You were a tough badass woman who had trained and worked too damn hard for this job to not keep fighting for the sake of the mission.
You really couldn’t blame him when he gave you that apologetic look and said, “Sorry Darlin’, it’s nothing personal.”
“Don’t leave me!” you had called out desperately. He was your back up after all. Without him there was no barrier between these men and yourself. Who knew what they would do to you. Kill you most likely, but when- and after what torture. “Jack! Please don’t leave me!” But he was gone.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
Your arm smarted, but you continued to try and punch your way out.
It was no good. Although some of them had run after Whiskey, many of them continued to gang up on you. You were on the floor now, arms held up protectively to your head, body curled tightly in an attempt to protect your vital organs; but it was no use. They kicked and they kicked- one thud after the other against your body. You should have been focusing, but what was the use. So your mind wandered- back to him. Every tender soft word said between crisp white hotel bed sheets. Every tender kiss. Every “it’s only you kiddo.” And he still left you behind.
There was a resounding bang! Followed by another and another. The kicking stopped. Your body started to relax as you opened your eyes to see him there in the doorway, a smoking gun in each hand. “Now fellas!” He called out into the room and you looked around the room at the men in their shitty black suits, all lying on the floor nursing various shot wounds. None of them instantly fatal, but still deadly enough. All hitting vital organs that would bleed out quickly, but not enough that they wouldn’t be able to listen to his lesson first. “Is that any way to treat a lady?”
You glowered at him when he finally locked his eyes on yours. He quickly holstered his pistols before rushing over to you. “Now you didn’t think I was actually gonna leave ya, did you?” You groaned as his arms reached around your body and lifted you from the floor.
“The drive?” you asked, your voice raspy.
“I handed it off to Ginger.” He said as he carried you from the room.
“Wait? Ginger’s here?” you groaned.
“Hey, rest now. Don’t worry, I’m gonna get you out of here.”
That was the last thing you remembered before your vision went black and you went limp in his arms.
—---
“What happened?” You asked as you woke up in the medical bay two days later. To your surprise, Jack was sat in a chair beside your bed reading some rodeo magazine.
He quickly closed it, putting it down in his lap, before leaning across the bed, reaching for your hand.
“I’m sorry,” he said earnestly. “I thought I would lead them away, but clearly not enough of them.” You remained quiet, both slowly recalling the events that left you feeling black and blue, but also analyzing the pain in his eyes. “I called for evac the moment I left the room. Ginger said she’d seen everything through the glasses and was already on the way. Champ told me to get the drive out first. I had to do it. I couldn’t let on…” his voice trailed off.
“You couldn’t let on what?”
“I know I’m not supposed to do shit like this. You know. I told Champ I wouldn’t- fuck!” he hung his head in shame. “I didn’t think…”
“You didn’t think what? Didn’t think what Jack?!” you pressed him.
“That I’d actually care about you!” He snapped. “That I’d fall in love with you.” His words stunned you. “I compromised the mission today.” he said with shame.
“Yeah, but you got it out. You did the right thing in the end.”
“Yeah, but it should never had come to that.” He grunted. “I saw you in that dress and I just became distracted. It should never have come to that.” He repeated himself.
In the silence that fell, you finally realised what he had said. “You love me?” you questioned tentatively.
He looked at you confused. “After all that, that’s the thing that you take away.” He paused for a moment, if only to gauge your reaction. “Of course I do. Knew it the first moment I met you. All smart mouth and attitude and…” his voice trailed off as he got lost in you. You squeezed his hand encouragingly. “I promise I’ll never actually leave you, okay? I’ll always come back for you.”
And he always did. Until the Poppy Adams case. Until he would never come back to you again.
