I have to admit, I kind of miss Steve as a side character in newer Sambucky fics.

I fully understand why a lot of people wouldn’t write about him at this point and if someone doesn’t want to see him mentioned ever again along Sam and Bucky... I’m fine with that. But personally I wish he was included in these stories more often, because there is a lot of roles he can take that have a potential to make the plot better.

For example, I like Steve being an oblivious idiot who is the only person incapable of noticing that his two best friends are in love - often to the point where he believes that they actually hate each other. Or a reverse trope where Steve knows them so well that he sees what Sam and Bucky are feeling before any of them realized. (I love stories where he plays the least subtle matchmaker on Earth after noticing what’s going on.)

I also need to add that Steve is basically the reason why Sam and Bucky met in the first place. And while I’m not very fond of the trope where Sam and Bucky are childishly arguing who’s a better friend... it’s still an interesting dynamic to explore, considering that each pair in this trio has an entirely different history. (Not to forget the scenarios where Sam mistakenly assumes that Bucky’s dating Steve, or vice versa.)

Finally, we have some all-time classics like: “Bucky bothering poor Steve with his rants about how cute Sam is”, “Sam stubbornly visiting Steve, even though his weird roommate acts like he doesn’t like him”, “Sam and Bucky joining forces to make fun of Steve”, and obviously “Steve regretting (not really) ever introducing his friends to each other”.

Bring this annoying old man back to my Sambucky fics. He brought so much useless (but welcome) drama with him <3

Meet the Parents

Sky x Male Reader

A/N: The reader finally meets Sky’s parents, who are quite famously known.

“Blue Eyes, I changed my mind. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all,” Y/N said as they drove closer and closer to their intended destination.

Sky took his eyes off the road for a second to glance at his nervous boyfriend. He was fidgeting with his fingers as snowflakes began to dance around him. It only happened when Y/N was upset or stressed. Tonight, he was stressed. Sky was taking his boyfriend, Y/N Peters, to meet his parents: Steve Grant Barnes and James Buchanan Barnes. Aka Captain America and the Winter Soldier. “What? Oh, come on, Baby Boy. Tonight's going to go fine. My dads will love you.”

“You mean when they find out that their son is in love with a freak who has wings coming out of his back and is basically a real-life Elsa? Yeah, I'm sure they'll be thrilled,” Y/N sarcastically said.

“You're being dramatic. My parents are just like everyone else. They have jobs. They make dinner. They do TikTok videos.”

“Right. Because everyone has parents who are literal superheroes. Your dads are Captain America and the Winter Soldier,” Y/N said.

“Former Captain America and Winter Soldier,” Sky corrected. “Besides, they know you're a good guy. I practically brag to them about what a Saint you are.”

“Really?”

“Really.” Sky smiled. “More importantly, my brother, James, likes you, and he doesn't like anyone but himself.”

“Yeah, after he threatened me with a gun or a knife shoved up where the sun doesn't shine if I ever hurt you in any way.”

Sky growled. “When we're alone later on. I'm punching him in the dick.”

“Don't do that. As funny as that would be. Don't do it on my account,” Y/N said.

“See. You are a good boy.”

“Yeah, you tell me that all the time when we're alone,” Y/N blushed as Sky smirked at the mention of their bedroom experience.

Eventually, Sky pulled into the driveway of his home as Y/N glanced at the twinkling lights inside of the house to the apple pie his mom had baked for Y/N to take over tonight in his hands.

“Are you sure they like apple pie? Is it too basic? Maybe we should head to the store and get something else?” Y/N rapidly fired his questions.

Sky put his hands over Y/N’s in order to calm his boyfriend down. “It's fine, Y/N. It's actually their favorite kind of pie.” Sky brought Y/N’s hands to his lips and gave it a gentle kiss as Y/N blushed. Sky opens the door to the driver's side and comes around and opens the door for Y/N, like a gentleman.

Sky guides Y/N towards the door of the house as it opens up and Y/N freezes in place. At first, he thinks it was Sky’s parents, and he prepares to be turned away immediately, but it wasn't. It was Sky’s younger brother, James. James had dark brown hair and had blue eyes like Sky, but his were more of a cold stormy blue. Sky’s we're like a calm, clear ocean wave.

“Dad sent me to come to check on you,” James said. He looked at Y/N and smirked.

“H-H-How are you, James?” Y/N squeaked.

“Better than you're gonna be in a few minutes,” James teases. “My Pops is sharpening his knives as we speak, and my dad has his shield ready.”

“That's it, I'm leaving!” Y/N turns around and tries to bolt, but Sky grabs the back of his shirt. “Oh, no, you don't.”

Sky turns and glares at his baby brother. “Stop it, James. Otherwise, I'll post your diary online.”

James looks pale. “You wouldn't dare.”

“Try me.”

“Fine. You win.” James turns on his heel and walks back into the house.

Sky turns to his shorter boyfriend. “Are you ready for this?”

“No,” Y/N sighed.

“Maybe this will make you feel better?” Sky wraps a strong arm around Y/N’s waist and pulls him closer until their chests are touching. Sky leans down and places a kiss on Y/N’s lips as the younger boy blushes as Sky kisses him silly.

They probably would have stayed like that if not for someone clearing their throat. Sky and Y/N quickly broke apart as they looked up the stairs at an older-looking version of James. It was Sky’s dad, James Barnes Sr. His metal and regular arms were crossed over his broad chest. He wore a black buttoned-up shirt.

“Hey, Pops,” Sky greeted awkwardly.

“Sky. Your dad says dinner is ready,” James Sr. says as he looks at Y/N. “You must be Y/N.”

“Nice to meet you, sir. My name is Y/N Peters.”

Sky giggled at that. “Sir? Since when are you all proper and polite?” Y/N glared at Sky. “Believe it or not, Blues eyes, but I do have my moments.”

Sky’s dad smiled. “You may call me Bucky if you like, young man.”

“Thank you, Mr. Bucky Barnes sir.”

Bucky smiled. “Just Bucky. That ‘sir and Mr.’ stuff makes me feel even older than I already am.”

Sky and Y/N walk up the stairs as they enter the house. Y/N tries to keep his powers in check as he feels them rush to the surface. Stay calm. Breathe in. Breathe out. Sky grabbed Y/N’s hand and led him to the kitchen, where they saw a man with blonde hair dressed in a patriotic apron over a blue button-up shirt.

“Dad? This is Y/N. Y/N, this is my dad, Steve.” The blonde haired blue eyed male turned to his son and his boyfriend, a gentle smile on his face. “Nice to finally meet you, Y/N. Sky has told us all about you.”

“It’s nice to meet you too, Mr. Barnes. You have a lovely home.”

Steve smiled. His blue eyes were shining with amusement. “Thank you, Y/N. You’re quite the gentleman.” Y/N blushed at that. Captain America–no–the former Captain America just gave him a compliment.

“Is it almost ready?” Sky asked.

Steve nodded his head. “Almost. Why don’t you guys go sit down and tell your father and James to come sit down as well?”

“Sure, Dad.” Sky grabbed Y/N’s hand as he gently led the younger boy away from the kitchen and into the dining room.

Steve watched them leave with a smile on his face. Looks like his eldest has found himself a keeper.

A/N: these are going to be veryyy late submissions. but it’s not my fault writer’s block hit me now. i mean kinda but not really. i’ll be posting these randomly here and there when inspiration comes. enjoy!

Bucky surveyed the living room with a small frown adorning his lips and a small twinkle in his eyes. His eyes trailed over the couches covered in crayons and papers before falling to the action figures and toys laying on the floor like casualties of a battlefield. The smell of chicken nuggets and fries lingered in the air, mixing in with the vanilla scented candle he had lit after the boys were sent to bed.

He heard you before he saw you, the telltale creak of the second step alerting him before you could remember it existed. He saw you step up beside him with a sigh and send a long glance at the pile of dishes in the sink. He smiled softly at the adoring smile that had somehow, in amidst of the chaotic closing of the night, appeared on your lips.

He nudged your shoulder with his. "Think we'll survive this?" He joked when you turned your head to look at him. The teasing tone in his voice made you giggle, lowly so that you didn't wake the sleeping boys.

"We always do, don't we?" You replied swiftly, looking at the family portrait you had managed to take last month at Disneyworld—a gift from Tony. You and Bucky were at the center, holding the one of two-year-old twins each, Grant & Thomas, while the four-year-old Grayson was held in the middle by Bucky. The smiles on each of their faces were adorable enough to have you slightly hazy with the memory.

With a huff, you looked at Bucky and said, "Let's split up."

"Toys or dishes?" Bucky raised his eyebrows and waited for your answer. You smirked and looked at the floor covered in Legos, action figures, and blocks.

"There's no way I can bend down for that long, Buck," you answered, placing your hand on your swollen belly. Bucky chuckled and nodded, a rare grin on his face that lit his face and flashed his dimples.

You two were done with kids—you really were done after having three boys—but you knew Bucky had wanted a girl. And you secretly did, too. Especially after seeing him with Morgan, you both starting trying again. It wasn't as if you weren't opposed to having another boy either—all three boys were such mama's boys that it made both you and Bucky all warm inside.

When you had brought that up, Bucky had laughed and kissed your concern away, adding in a simple, "If this one turns out anything like the boys when they grow up, I'll be more than happy. Boy or girl." That was the end of your worries. When you two learned that you were having a girl, it became apparent that Bucky's phrase third time's a charm turned out to be true.

"I'll get cleaning here then," Bucky said while reaching out to grab your hand and kiss your knuckles. "But you gotta promise me that you'll sit down if your feet hurt. And you—" his eyes flickering down and his metal hand coming to your stomach— "don't give your mama a hard time, 'kay?"

A soft kick landed on his hand and his smile widened. "I hope that was an 'okay, papa' and not a hard no," he teased with a wink at you.

"Yeah, okay. I promise." You smiled up at him and tilted your head as an invitation. He leaned in to peck your lips and then you two split up as planned.

He quickly gathered the bigger toys first, knowing he would trip over them or not see a Lego piece before it was too late. After dumping those to the side, he bent down and started piling the Legos together and then dumping them into its container. He fell back to sit on his butt after noticing that he had been balancing on his toes. He sat with his legs bent and elbows resting on his knees.

He had barely begun and he was already tired of cleaning up. He glanced around the couch to look at you. You were almost finished with the dishes, wearing an apron to reduce the water from staining your clothes. Well, they were his hoodie and sweatpants, but he was pretty sure you wore them more often than him. He never minded it, even if he complained about never having his clothes with a playful glare aimed at you.

Bucky got up and walked over to you silently, purposely missing the creaky board. He wrapped his arms around you, feeling you jump slightly in his arms before settling into his chest.

"Thought I told you to sit down if—"

"If my feet hurt," you cut in with a chuckle. "I know, but I'm okay right now. Promise." He hummed and pulled you closer to him. He kissed the curve of your neck and made his way up to the sensitive spot that made you squirm away.

"Hey," Bucky protested with a boyish smile. He tightened his arms around you with mind to the swell of your belly and the baby girl inside to keep you in place as he kissed that spot again.

"Bucky!" You squealed, but pressed your lips together the next moment with his little hush.

"The kids are sleeping," he murmured against your skin, causing a shiver to seep through your body. "Don't wanna be too loud—"

Your hiss made him pause and move away, suddenly scared that he had hurt you with his strength. It wouldn't be the first time that he had, but those times were under different circumstances and controlled. Just as he was moving away with his arms loosening around you, you grabbed his forearm and leaned back into his chest.

"Doll?" He whispered, afraid to speak. He swallowed when your breath hitched again.

"She's kicking my ribs again," you mumbled, eyes closing and head tilting onto his shoulder. He relaxed a little, wrapping his arms around you again, and slipped his hands under the hoodie to rub little circles into the soft skin. "She's strong, though. That much is obvious."

Bucky kissed your neck. "Just like her mama."

"Pretty sure it's that super-soldier serum."

"Don't drag my wife down." He bit your neck playfully. "You're the one who gave birth to our boys. We both know I'm not that strong."

"There's other complications with that, anyway," you remarked, relaxing when you realized that the kicking had ceased.

"Just take the compliment, doll." Bucky saw you smile and open your eyes, placing the last dish on the rack to dry and turning in his arms. You grinned and an idea sparked in his head. "What d'you say we turn tonight into a date night?"

"What?" You laughed slightly and placed your hands on his chest.

"Just—" Bucky let out a breath— "Just go sit down on the couch, the only one not covered in papers and crayons, and relax and wait for me to clean up. Then we can watch a movie with the fire going. What d'you say, huh?"

"I say," you started, moving your hands around his neck and tangling them between his locks, "it sounds like we'll be watching what I want to." Your eyes sparkled with amusement and mischief.

Bucky rolled his eyes, but nodded. "Sounds about right."

"Well, then, get ready to watch Scream."

You backed away and walked into the living room. You hopped over the toys still scattered with a smile and flopped down on the couch. Bucky followed you and grabbed the remote to pass to you before he started to clean up the remaining toys. He started the fireplace and watched it blaze for a second. Then he realized that the lights had been turned off.

"You ready, Jamie?"

Bucky sat down next to you. Your presence seemed to warm him more than the fireplace.

"'Course I am."

Listen. One day, when a miracle happens and I’m able to finish any of my writing again, you’re going to get a 100k+ words, obnoxiously long and convoluted story about Steve/Sam/Bucky/Riley where Riley was also a Winter Soldier.

There’s a lot of drama in there, because when the first three finally settled and made their relationship work, Bucky finds Riley and has to somehow inform Sam that his late partner was actually alive and frozen somewhere for the last decade. And then Bucky and Steve have to accept that they might lose Sam over this after having so little time with him; Sam feels torn between his past and current love; and Riley tries to heal from Hydra and not die out of jealousy.

I promise it’s very good in theory and if it existed outside my head you’d all cry :)

Holed Stones in English Folk Magic

Stones with naturally occurring holes in them have many uses in magic all over the world. In England they have been used for protection and luck as well as in medicine. Holed stones are known by many different names, In England they have been and are known by numerous names such as Hag stones, Witch stones, Serpents'/Snakes' eggs, Adder stones, and Lucky stones. For the sake of clarity, I will be referring to them as ‘holed stones’.

Luck and Protection

Holed stones are used as amulets for protection against Hags, witches, faeries, and other spirits, when they are used in this way they are referred to as hag or witch stones. People would hang a holed stone above the door of their home or barn, and sometimes passageways within the home. People would also keep a small holed stone in a pocket for luck and protection.

Holed stones have also been known for being lucky, being worn around the neck for luck or tossed over the shoulder after spitting through the stone's hole to grant a wish. It was also said that is a person tied a holed stone to their house keys, those who resided in the home would be prosperous.

In communities where fishing and/or sailing was common the use of holed stones for protection was common, tying them to the bows of boats or inside of smaller rowing boats for protection while at sea. Holed stones were also used to protect against drowning, Christopher Duffin (2011) writes, “The coxswain of the Ramsay lifeboat [during 1929], also a fisherman by trade, always wore a small discoidal [holed] stone around his neck, threaded with copper wire. The amulet, passed down through three generations of fishermen, was credited with preserving the life of the wearer through terrible maritime circumstances.”

Medicine

As these holed stones protected against hags, witches, faeries, and other spirits they would often be used in medicine, as magic was often thought to be the cause of illness.

One of the illnesses holed stones were used to treat is ‘hag-riding’, in the book A Dictionary of English Folklore it is defined as “a frightening sensation of being held immobile in bed, often by a heavy weight pressing on one’s stomach or chest […] In folklore, it was thought of as a magical attack, though whether by demonic incubus, ghost, harmful fairy, or witch varied according to place and period.” (Simpson & Roud, 2003) Today hag-riding is understood to be sleep paralysis. To treat hag-riding a holed stone would be hung above the bed of the sufferer or, if the sufferer is an animal, placed in a stable.

This belief applied to both humans as well as other animals; hag stones were often used in the treatment of ill livestock. In Lancashire holed stones would be tied to the back of cows to protect them from all forms of harm, “self-holed stones, termed ‘lucky-stones,’ are still suspended over the backs of cows in order that they may be protected from every diabolical influence.” (Harland and Wilkinson 1873).
