Hi raven, I’ve loved your intricate and deep analysis of the twst cast for the past 2 years to the point where I’m surprised you have characters you don’t really care about! (Not that that’s bad thing!) Now with the introduction of new characters (cough, cough Rollo), I’d love to see how you rank the twst characters again 👀

Thank you very much—but I think there’s an important distinction to be made!!

Knowing a lot about a character, analyzing them, and thinking that they have interesting writing does not always equate to “I like this character”. This is definitely the case for me; I try to compartmentalize my objective opinion from how I subjectively view each character. There’s certainly characters I dislike on a personal level, but I continue discussing them because they still provide value and nuance to their world and story! (You can see that I don’t like Malleus at all but I am still capable of thinking critically about his loneliness and how his resistance to change informs his actions.) For the sake of analysis, I can mostly put aside my own feelings 😂

A character could be the most kind and/or complex individual ever and someone could still dislike them for a reason as innocuous as not vibing with their tropes or even their physical design. (For example, I dislike Vil’s dad not because I think he’s a bad parent; Eric Venue is one of the best parents in the whole game. I simply dislike him because I have a bias against celebrity characters.) And that’s okay!! Everyone’s tastes are different. People should be allowed to dislike whatever they want for whatever reason they want.

I wasn’t able to find a TWST character tier list that included all the NPCs, so… I typed in as many other significant characters as I could recall for the tier I slot them in. I hope that works ^^

I think the only big changes here are Idia and Rook; Idia has gone higher up (no doubt thanks to all the family drama he’s been in lately) and Rook has dropped down (he has, sadly, been displaced by another pseudo-French man). I also tried to segment my “likes” into “lesser liked” and “more liked” tiers, otherwise there would be a ton of people crammed into the blanket term of “like”. Malleus is… in a tier of his own…

Pretty willing to just ask you what you need

If your cramps are keeping you up he'll have a mini movie night with you and Grimm

Cannot get a heating pad but you have Grimm so it's fifty/fifty

Stops you from trying to fight everyone that angers you by just dragging you away

ENMA YUUKEN:

When you said you wanted to help him do his sit-ups, he was slightly confused. He’s never had a problem doing them before other than the occasional stomach cramp because he kept pushing himself- he’s done the exercise every day. But he agreed anyway.

After taking his shirt off, he took position and placed his towel and water bottle on the table beside him as you put your hands on his ankles to keep him in place. “Ready?” he asked.

“Yep.” He laid down with his hands behind his head, and when he brought himself up, he suddenly felt a light pressure on his lips.

Oh. So that’s what you meant. He feels heat gathering in his cheeks and when he looks away to save himself the embarrassment- he hears you chuckle at his flustered state.

“Aren’t you going to continue?”

He looks at you again, as if to ask ‘are you serious?’ but it’s hard to take his usually stoic face seriously when he’s struggling to make eye contact with you. Eventually, he manages to take a hold of himself.

He lies back down and hoists himself up, and once again, he’s met with your lips.

HIRASAKA YUUKA:

She happily agreed when you suggested helping with her sit-ups, not thinking much of it. Maybe she could convince you to join her, either way, you’d be watching her workout. It’s a win in her book.

After doing a few stretches, she prepares to begin the exercise. She feels your hand around her ankles and you give her a thumbs-up to signify that you’re ready. When she hoists herself up- her lips touch yours.

Her eyes widen at the feeling, feeling her cheeks turn pink. But before she could kiss you back, you’ve already pulled away. From the look on your face, this was your plan all along. In hindsight, she probably should’ve known.

There’s a smug challenging little smile plastered on your face. “You going to keep doing your situps?” To that, she chuckles and gently pulls you closer by your wrist- onto her lap. “I think we can do that later.”

If you're shy naturally or only have a lack of confidence in your romantic ability, you're probably not going to have the best time with Enma. Oh, it's not because he's oblivious or because he's second-guessing your feelings for him. It's because he's observant, and very good at it.

He's a sensitive person to others and he's very ready and watchful as soon as he sees something is off with you. He's studying a certain page in a textbook and you've slipped a signed note into said textbook earlier after he had gotten up to wrangle Grim back to study. But it seems this page has what Yuuken needs for his homework and it'll be an eternity before he finds the note so far into the book…

"Hey, partner," oh right, you and Yuuken are sharing a presentation project now, "are you okay? You're staring at my textbook. Do you need one?"

Yuuken was far too nice to say it to you, but he knew you had one just in your bag just on the floor. He's courteous, you can give him that.

"No, it's nothing… don't mind me for a second." You answer, quite nervous at being caught.

He'll notice the sadness and melancholy coming from you as you study your own book later, and ask what's wrong. No matter if you're cool about it or you freak out, his dark eyes will stare you down in silence for a few seconds longer… before going back to reading.

"What's up with the guy?" Ace would complain, noticing your obvious downcast mood and you leaving class faster that day. "He's never been that fast to leave class… well, if it wasn't to chase after Yuuken."

Ace probably knows, whether you tell him or not. Trappola is an observant and nosy kid, and he'll notice if someone is acting strange in the friend group. And especially if someone has a suspected crush… !

Ace won't out you directly, but he can get far too close for your comfort sometimes. Like now.

Deuce and Grim are less likely to find out without a direct hint, and depending on how down bad you are… Ace might just withhold the info to see what Deuce and Grim call your strange behavior. For his own laughs. That, and Ace does want you to succeed… but this is hilarious.

Seeing Ace seemingly know what's going on while Deuce did not made Yuuken give the redhead a stare so judgemental, before Ace gave in and just told Deuce. Of course, Deuce goes, "Oh! I hadn't noticed…"

Yuuken can see your demeanor change far too often when he's around, and he knows you're not this bad of a shaking or nervous mess around him. He's seen how Idia deals with the public, and he's seen you without noticing him yet…

He has an idea why you're acting like that, and he honestly can't believe it. He's not the type to want to pressure someone to tell him the truth, and he'd rather you do so on your own, but he's unsure if you'll ever be able to. Especially with how you can just run away instead of talking to him.

In the near seclusion of the Ramshackle walls, studying away, he turns to you. He stares you down intensely as he always does, and asks you, in front of Grim no less, "Do you have a crush on me?"

Of course the shaky answers of no, no! doesn't faze him out of staring through your nervousness, and further asking, "It's okay if you do, I would have liked if you were upfront with me. I like you back."

Never has he seen a textbook drop so slowly out of a frozen man's hands. He knows you've heard him, so he'll give you your minute to comprehend what he said. He thinks he hears Grim yelling from him room at the ghosts. Have your answer ready anytime today!

I might have some theory regarding the MC, I think they are reflecting on some way their chapters.

Hear me out: Yuuken (despite his silliness) was very straightforward and “proper”. When we see him with his kendo teammates, he encourages them and seems to be a positive influence on them.

Contraste it to Heartslabyul and Riddle, whom despite having similar intentions, comes out wrong and controlling.

Now, we don’t know much about Yuuka, but seems to be a little more laid back and practices judo ( a more “brawly” sport than kendo). It could reflect on the survival of the fittest mentality Savanaclaw has.

Also, it seems to be a pattern that the MCs do some combat like activity. I wouldn’t be surprised if the following MCs do fencing, archery (maybe for the Pomefiore arc), taekwondo, etc.

It's rather interesting that each of the Yuus so far in the manga have been foils of sort to the overblotter in question (disciplined vs strict, competitive vs lazy, seemingly okay in body image vs puts up a mask, in order). Makes me excited to see what future Yuus will be like!!

Yes, it seems that the pattern for the manga!Yuu is that each serves as a foil or a “mirror” to the Episode’s respective OB boy. The idea is super interesting, but I hope they go further with it and actually let the Yuus engage with the OB boy of their Episode in a meaningful way. There’s both similarities and key differences between them, and I think that would make for an excellent opportunity for them to learn from each other, but also for Yuu to have a more active role in the OB boy’s steady, gradual change of heart and character. The way things are currently set up, the manga!Yuus don’t seem to have character arcs of their own or develop in any significant way from start to end; they’re just there to be the “good” example of what each OB boy struggles to attain.

For the Episode of Heartslabyul, I think the distinction between Yuuken’s discipline and Riddle’s strictness is an important one to make. At first glance, you might think being “disciplined” and being “strict” are the same thing. They’re actually not! “Disciplined” refers to control and restraint of oneself. That’s what Yuuken is! He is stoic but knows when to step forward and get serious. Meanwhile, Riddle is “strict”—demanding that both he and others obey the rules to a staggeringly stringent degree. Riddle isn’t “disciplined” because he forces his ideals on others and does not control himself when his temper flares. He is serious all the time and unrelenting in his pursuit of upholding the rules. In this way, Yuuken is actually the kind of person Riddle works toward becoming post-OB: someone with good control of his words and actions, while also observing the rules within reasonable wiggle room.

Another thing!! Yuuken’s style of leadership also greatly contrasts with Riddle’s. Throughout the Episode of Heartslabyul, we see that Yuuken is thinking about his kendo team mates, which spurs him to act or to comfort other characters because they remind him of his teammates. This was the case during the scene when Deuce confessed to his past as an ex-delinquent and Yuuken encouraged him in his endeavors to improve—just as he encouraged his kendo kouhai at the start of the manga. In spite of his stoic face, Yuuken is compassionate and considers the people around him. Meanwhile, Riddle rules with an iron fist and it’s always his way or the highway. He never once considers his classmates, their POVs, or their circumstances, always holding up his own interpretation of the rules as absolute and remaining unwilling to compromise.

For Yuuka, I wouldn’t say the contrast between her and Leona is in competitiveness vs being lazy. From what I’ve seen of her, Yuuka isn’t particularly competitive or lazy. She’s usually the one keeping people (mostly Grim) out of competition or squabbles, and she’s not exactly eager to compete (she steps up when people challenge or threaten her). I would hesitate to slot Leona (based on his actions in book 2 alone) as one or the other as well. Like… how is he lazy if he’s putting forth the effort to enact this whole scheme? And how is he competitive if the point of his plan is to get Diasomnia out of the tournament? Wouldn’t it be truly more “competitive” if he wanted to square up against them anyway?

I would say maybe a more apt point of mirrored traits for Yuuka and Leona are in terms of morality—or, I guess, how far they’re willing to stretch the definition of “playing fair”. Leona is the one that plays loosely, willing to resort to dirty tactics and skirting the rules if it means getting what he wants. Yuuka, however, is more morally upright. She’s keeping her friends out of trouble and stepping up to fight Savanaclaw mobs only when they pose a threat to her. In these ways, she “plays by the book”. As a fellow athlete as well, Yuuka would be able to understand Leona in the struggle to perform and to be seen. Not only that, but they share scars. The reasoning for Leona’s is left unexplained, but Yuuka’s is from a sporting injury. They could totally relate not only in their lived experiences, but by their physical markers.

We’ve only just met Yuuta, so I don’t know if we can draw any definitive conclusions as to how he’s a foil to Azul. However, we can deduce some parallels from his one chapter appearance so far. Both Yuuya and Azul come from restaurants that their respective family operates. Furthermore, Yuuta is and Azul was, overweight. For Azul, this became one of the sources of shame for him. His peers underestimated his competence in part due to his size, and this would later lead to Azul changing a lot about himself to appear “stronger” (including a more restrictive diet in order to maintain his new body). This is not true of Yuuta, who still retains his extra weight and happily chows on food. In fact, I don’t believe weight is even brought up by Yuuta at all. He’s content with his life the way it is, much more chill rather than stoic.

I think another HUGE point that helps Yuuta serve as a foil to Azul is their attitudes on gratitude. Yuuta is thankful for such little things like having food—he even gets mad at Grim for not being thankful for it!! This is a departure from Azul, who, despite running what is basically a wish-granting service, is never satisfied with what he already has. He is always concerned with getting “more”, be it money, influence, information, or abilities robbed from other students. The insecurity especially shows in how he desperately tries to protect his valuable golden contracts with a clever ruse. He keeps collecting and collecting, viewing those physical signifiers (the things he collects) as proof of his “success”.

My prediction for book 3 is 🤔 Azul will definitely see bits of his old self in Yuuta. His old self, whom Azul personally deemed as a weak and inferior version of himself, a version which he has a hard time coming to accept. I don’t think Azul would hate Yuuta or something that extreme, but Azul would feel pity for him and think him pathetic. Going hand-in-hand with the events of book 3, I believe Azul will underestimate Yuuta’s capabilities in the same way that Azul’s old bullies underestimated him when he was little. It would be such a cool parallel because, in this way, we’d get the sense that Azul has become no different than his bullies, pushing around the weak and (arguably just as bad) taking advantage of them for his own gain. And it would ultimately be those traits of Yuuta’s that Azul may have deemed weaknesses of his old self that save the day and get Azul to recognize he’s been living in denial this whole time, thus helping him to better appreciate his old self.

Anyway… HEADCANON OF RIDDLE'S CONFESSION:

It took our hedgehog lover a good month to realize he was in love.

Another 2 weeks for Trey to find out and two more months to convince him that he should confess to Yuuken.

Various plans were concocted, each one more bizarre and outlandish than the last, as Riddle's teammates and friends were asked to help him so that he had some context of what to do and what not to do.

Kalim recommended a parade, Malleus an old-fashioned courtship asking for Yuuken's hand from his parents, Azul made a set of “impossible to refuse” offers, Silver recommended a romantic horseback ride, and a host of other ideas.

They used Jamil's plan, a written confession. Short, simple and to the point.

Riddle spent at least a ream of pages to write a "perfect" letter that would show his feelings without, in his words, they will sound demanding.

It would have been a very good confession! If only he had put it in the mail like he was supposed to.

Somehow the letter never reached its addressee, and he ended up sending a formal teatime invitation to Yuuken and Grimm.

Riddle cried that night helplessly for not being able to send his letter. He worked so hard on it!

He managed to confess at that tea party.

Yuuken told him that he didn't feel the same way. Which would have been painful if it wasn't for the fact that she agreed to go on a date with him anyway.

Your effort reached our athlete and he believes that you are admirable! Congratulations Riddle.

Somehow they end up dating and one of the healthiest couples NRC will have the honor to meet.

De alguna forma la carta nunca llegó a su destinatario, y terminó enviando una invitación formal a la hora del té para Yuuken y Grimm.

Riddle lloró esa noche de impotencia por ser incapaz de mandar su carta ¡Trabajó muy duro en ella!

Logró confesarse en esa fiesta de té.

Yuuken le dijo que no sentía lo mismo. Lo cual hubiera sido doloroso si no fuera por el hecho de que de igual manera aceptó tener una cita con él.

¡Tu esfuerzo llegó a nuestro deportista y cree que eres admirable! Felicidades Riddle.

De alguna forma terminan siendo novios y una de las parejas más sanas que NRC tendrá el honor de conocer.

Violet eyes because he’s the main character of Octavinelle manga. Dark blue shirt and brown shoes supposed to be a reference to Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service.

Hair is supposed to be cobalt, the color of solitude, productivity, ingenuity, and enlightenment. Yellow eyes because she’s the main character of Savanaclaw manga. Casual color and shoes will match Nausicaä from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

There’s no visual for Game!Yuu because of the self-insert nature, so this is very personal interpretation. Cooked shrimp color shrimp; ginger hair with white streak and gray eyes. Complete uniform but doesn’t buttoned up jacket. Has the basic ass Kirito-esque isekai/light novel main character personality. The surname is used as 長松 with 長 (chou, osa, naga.i) meaning "leader, long," 松 (shou, matsu) meaning "pine tree". Prefect of Ramshackle Dorm.
