I feel like many white autistic people, especially those who were diagnosed as adults or self-diagnosed, don’t understand what I go through daily as a Black autistic person.

That’s why it’s important that autistic and other neurodivergent people of color have our own space.

Everyone love autism until the person needs someone to remind them or help do things like bathe, change clothes, and use the bathroom.

Everyone love autism until they need to be told what to do in social interactions and still can’t do it correctly.

Everyone love autism until they can’t communicate in the way you deem appropriate. Until they need other ways to communicate because they can’t verbally do it. They love autism until they can’t communicate even if they have aac. until they have NO (no) ways to communicate because they don’t understand they can.

Everyone loves autism until they can’t sit down and stop moving. Until they grunt or moan or make random sounds. Love until moves around and not even realize that their moving.

Everyone loves the idea of autism until it’s not level one low support needs. And not fair that high support needs, medium support needs, level 3, level 2 autistics get so much hate for things can’t help. They should still be loved!

Can I just say as a black, autistic, trans person I often feel very alienated pretty much wherever I go. Please be kind to members of your community, please forget all that shit about whether or not someone’s identity is real or not or if they’ve earned it like online discourse thinks you need to. All I’ve ever wanted is for people to see those they don’t understand and to love them anyway.

The way people talk over Black Autistic people is... Mind-Boggling. Truly.

There are so many people in the autistic community that genuinely believe that them and Black Autistic people have the same experience, and that everything Black Autistic people go through they go through as well.

That's NOT TRUE.

Black Autistics face more questioning and doubt than White Autistics do.

Yes, all Autistics face doubt.

But when White Autistics face doubt they're often told 'You aren't autistic' - as in YOU in specific are not Autistic.

Meanwhile when Black Autistics face doubt we're often told 'You CAN'T be autistic'. Not just 'You aren't', but you can't.

As in 'You physically, biologically CANNOT be autistic because you are black'.

Do you see the difference?

I've had multiple people say to me 'I didn't know you can be black and autistic', or 'I didn't know black autistic people existed.'

Our mere existence as an entire GROUP is called into question. Because of our race.

No one will ever say 'I didn't know you can be white and autistic' because Autistic Representation revolves around Whiteness.

And yes, 99% of people with autism had communication issues.

But if you're a white autistic person you have never had to decode micoagressive racism through the lens of your autism.

- Especially at risk of your safety or life.

Allistic black people already have to carefully choose our behavior and wording with law enforcement under threat of imprisonment or outright on-the-spot execution.

Now imagine having to navigate conversations with law enforcement while also autistic.

Especially knowing that most of the time when a mentally disabled person is killed by law enforcement - they are usually also black.

Elijah McClain and Ryan Gainer - both autistic AND BLACK. Osaze Osagie - also black.

So even if you say that all autistic people experience this, it's very clear that Black Autistic people face it to a higher, more dangerous degree.

We are not 1:1. We are not the same.

This doesn't even factor in things like having to learn to codeswitch or speak AAVE. Or how predominately black schools have less resources for their autistic students.

Or how many professionals in mental health DON'T diagnose black people because they've never studied the Black Autistic experience, and thus cannot spot it.

Or how many Black people that ARE identified to be neurodivergent are instead labeled with ODD or BPD instead.

There are so many layers and factors to this that cannot be ignored.

The autism community needs to get better at understanding intersectionality. We need to get better at representing Autistics of color for ALL levels.

And y'all need to stop talking over Black Autistics. Our experiences are not the same. And that's okay.

stop calling other autistics ableist for treating their autism like a disorder

I don't care if your autism doesn't make you feel disabled you're a minority and you don't get to call the terminology other autistic people use ableist. Especially terms that are useful for level 3/high support needs autistics

If you don't like the levelling system or support labels and think it's the same as functioning labels don't use them on yourself. Stop calling them useless ableist and harmful

People are pretending this doesn't happen anymore but there are still posts and articles and videos everywhere trying to erase terminology useful to many mid-high support needs

If you think it's bad to talk about our differences you're wrong. We can both be a diverse community and have differences that we label. If you want to pretend we're all the same just because we're autistic you've only spent time with autistic people like you

Some autistic people need levels to understand their own needs or find other autistic people they can relate to

Some people call themselves a person with autism instead because that's what they're comfortable with

Some autistic people don't like that they're autistic and find it hugely disabling and struggle to find positives in it

Some autistic people say they are severely autistic because of how disabling their autism is

Some autistic people look autistic and cant mask

Some autistic people still use functioning labels on themselves because it's familiar and helps them and it's what they're comfortable with

Some autistic people say they have a disorder condition disability or ASD because that's what they're comfortable with

If you want to treat your autism like just a difference we're not stopping you. If you want to treat everyone's autism like just a difference then we have problems

If a label doesn't help you that's fine. Don't speak on how helpful labels that never even applied to you are. If you think all autistics with higher support needs are incapable of knowing what's ableist so you have to talk over them you are wrong.

If yes, we want YOU! Specifically, I want to invite you to contribute to this show I'm a part of called the autistic monologues! We are seeking to tell as many aspects of the autistic experience as we can and there is simply only so much we can cover as a rather homogeneous group (mostly white, 19-22, queer, undiagnosed or late diagnosed, etc) from one small college. Do you have any advice on finding non-white autistic spaces? I struggle with finding community a lot.

If you’re on social media, there are hashtags like #AutisticWhileBlack, #BlackAndAutistic and #Autizzy

There are Facebook for autistic people of color. I’m part of one.

And I googled spaces for autistic people of color.

And there are also Discord servers as well.

And word-of-mouth. Inquiring about spaces for autistic people of color, whether irl or online.

Or starting your own space.

And honestly, it took multiple steps for me to find spaces for autistic people of color—googling, connecting with others on social media, and searching on Facebook—but I eventually found some good groups. I hope you’ll be able to find your groups.

So many people still seem confused.

It’s a privilege to mask. Not a good one, but you have an advantage over those of us who either can’t anymore or could never in the first place.

As someone who used to have the ability to mask, you get more opportunities when they can’t tell or get an idea on your autism. I could do a lot more, had more chances before stopped being able to mask (or unmask on my terms)

The ability to willingly unmask is a privilege. Not everyone got that choice. Some people decided to just be themselves when they was ready. Not everyone got the decision.

The ability to freely stim is a privilege. This is something people really don’t wanna hear but it is one. I stim and people think I’m about to fight someone. That I’m a violent person and it needs to be stoped. I watch the white kids stim and everyone encourages it. We do the same thing. We both rock, we both flap our hands and arm, we both jump when excited.

Their stimming is seen as a need to self regulate

Mines is seen as a act of violence that needs to be stoped. That’s a privilege.

I can’t stim without the possibility of being told to stop or leave the room because it’s “obvious” I’m ready to punch someone. I can’t stim without knowing someone is worried I’m ready to attack, ready to just jump on them. I have to result to stim toys when I need bodily stims while the white kids can choose which they want. Look and me and tell me that’s not privilege.

It’s okay to be upset at these things. But understand your position is one of a privilege not everyone has.

Well, I'm giving out free bust shots in exchange for a couple of simple things.

For context, the Kid's Online Safety Act, or KOSA, is a bill meant to "protect children," by that I mean it will put the internet under heavy surveillance and censorship rules. What would be considered as dangerous for children would be completely determined by the government.

This is the government that has decided that conversations about race, sexuality, gender, and mental health are dangerous for kids. What does this mean, then?

It means that if you are a person of color, queer, or neurodivergent, this bill will do whatever it can to wipe you off the face of the internet.

Not only that, but people sixteen years of age or younger would be placed under HEAVY surveillance, which is an extreme breach of privacy.

If this bill passes, the internet will become operated like a fascist regime that hovers over children and completely censors the existence of anyone that isn't white, cishet, and neurotypical. We CANNOT let this happen.

All I ask of you is this: reblog this post, and DM me with proof that you've either signed all of the following petitions or have emailed your representatives. This costs you nothing except a little bit of your time.

Do this, and, as previously stated, I will draw you a bust shot of your original character or otherwise fictional character of your choice.
