Do you have any advice on finding non-white autistic spaces? I struggle with finding community a lot.
If you’re on social media, there are hashtags like #AutisticWhileBlack, #BlackAndAutistic and #Autizzy
There are Facebook for autistic people of color. I’m part of one.
And I googled spaces for autistic people of color.
And there are also Discord servers as well.
And word-of-mouth. Inquiring about spaces for autistic people of color, whether irl or online.
Or starting your own space.
And honestly, it took multiple steps for me to find spaces for autistic people of color—googling, connecting with others on social media, and searching on Facebook—but I eventually found some good groups. I hope you’ll be able to find your groups.

The way people talk over Black Autistic people is... Mind-Boggling. Truly.
There are so many people in the autistic community that genuinely believe that them and Black Autistic people have the same experience, and that everything Black Autistic people go through they go through as well.
That's NOT TRUE.
Black Autistics face more questioning and doubt than White Autistics do.
Yes, all Autistics face doubt.
But when White Autistics face doubt they're often told 'You aren't autistic' - as in YOU in specific are not Autistic.
Meanwhile when Black Autistics face doubt we're often told 'You CAN'T be autistic'. Not just 'You aren't', but you can't.
As in 'You physically, biologically CANNOT be autistic because you are black'.
Do you see the difference?
I've had multiple people say to me 'I didn't know you can be black and autistic', or 'I didn't know black autistic people existed.'
Our mere existence as an entire GROUP is called into question. Because of our race.
No one will ever say 'I didn't know you can be white and autistic' because Autistic Representation revolves around Whiteness.
-
And yes, 99% of people with autism had communication issues.
But if you're a white autistic person you have never had to decode micoagressive racism through the lens of your autism.
- Especially at risk of your safety or life.
Allistic black people already have to carefully choose our behavior and wording with law enforcement under threat of imprisonment or outright on-the-spot execution.
Now imagine having to navigate conversations with law enforcement while also autistic.
Especially knowing that most of the time when a mentally disabled person is killed by law enforcement - they are usually also black.
Elijah McClain and Ryan Gainer - both autistic AND BLACK. Osaze Osagie - also black.
So even if you say that all autistic people experience this, it's very clear that Black Autistic people face it to a higher, more dangerous degree.
We are not 1:1. We are not the same.
This doesn't even factor in things like having to learn to codeswitch or speak AAVE. Or how predominately black schools have less resources for their autistic students.
Or how many professionals in mental health DON'T diagnose black people because they've never studied the Black Autistic experience, and thus cannot spot it.
Or how many Black people that ARE identified to be neurodivergent are instead labeled with ODD or BPD instead.
There are so many layers and factors to this that cannot be ignored.
The autism community needs to get better at understanding intersectionality. We need to get better at representing Autistics of color for ALL levels.
And y'all need to stop talking over Black Autistics. Our experiences are not the same. And that's okay.

Idk if any of y'all saw this video yet, but rn there's a tik tok going viral of of this white woman who confronted her parents bigotry on Christmas and got sent home. She's an upset mess about but not in a white savior/validate me way which I can respect.
And as always I have something to say about it.
So she says she starts a war after she reminds her parents that people are people and that she
"probably shouldn't have said anything to begin with because there's no point"
And I've seen this sentiment of "there's no point" a LOT among allies. Not just white allies to BIPOC either but with allies across the board, queer allies, ND allies, etc.
To clarify by "that sentiment" I mean the idea that your personal effort to correct, inform, or speak up on an issue is not Worth it unless it will cause a Change in the person/people you're addressing that You will be able to see reflected. Because if they won't change then you're just putting up with their vitriol, hostility, and ignorance for nothing, right? And why put up with that for nothing. You're a person with feelings and limited patience so if you're gonna experience something awful, it should be for something, right? Especially if it's someone you have to put up with see regularly like your parents.
And besties...
The point is trying. The point is challenging bigotry and ignorance wherever it exists. The point is to show bigots that their ignorance isn't tolerable. It's to show them that their bigotry isn't tolerable. And as many times as they will be harmful, you will rise to meet their challenge.
The point is to challenge bigotry because it is bigotry and there's no room for it in the future we're building.
And as awful as it feels to have your family disown, belittle, and berate you there are So Many people going through this. BIPOC, immigrants, queer folk, Muslims, etc. We know what it's like to have people who should love you treat you badly, what it's like to lose community and support. You're not alone in this feeling, you know?
But everyday we still talk to our families and communities and strangers online and we still challenge their bigotry and yeah it hurts sometimes but we do it anyway so the next generation of our community won't have to.
Because they may not be here yet but we are.
In my tribe we have this concept of 7 generations being deeply significant. Part of that belief is that you and your choices will impact the next 7 generations of your descendants. And I want to be a good ancestor. Not just to the generations of my family that don't exist yet but to yours too.
I want to be a good ancestor to family I'll never meet and the friends I'll never get to drink with.
To queer kids that never had to answer to anyone for their love, to Muslim and Black boys who never had to be mindful of the toys they played outside with, to the loud brown girls who never felt out of place, to the disabled lady up the road who is the First and only voice her doctors listen to.....None of these people exist yet, but they will as long as I'm doing what I can for them today.
And absolutely everything I do is for them. It's for the future I won't get to see. For a world I'll never get to walk on. For laughter I'll never hear.
THATS THE POINT

Repost via @thrivelifeline: 2023 has been an especially tough year for our trans family as we face increasing anti-trans legislation, and as we grieve for ourselves while continuing to show up for our communities. We understand how difficult it is for crisis responders during this time, especially for responders who share trans identities. In this period, as @translifeline takes a break to care for themselves, we are here for you. THRIVE Lifeline is trans-led and operated. We provide non-carceral, trauma-informed, and text-based support, 24/7/365. Our team is 50% trans and nonbinary, 90% LGBTQ2S+, 66% disabled / neurodivergent, and 58% POC. We personally understand chronic marginalization and are grateful to create an affirming space for you in your most vulnerable times, whether you are in acute crisis or just seeking to talk to someone who understands your identities. If you need support, day or night, we are here for you. Text “TRANS” to +1.313.662.8209. [ID: Text reads "We know the holidays can be a particularly hard time for our trans community. We get it, and we're here for you." A purple box in the center contains the identity statistics in the caption. Below is THRIVE's phone number. The background is a gradient created from the trans flag colors]

Stop saying "you're so strong and brave! You're such a great activist!".
I shouldn't have to be. I'm wasting my years fighting for my human rights against people who won't pick up any other book if it saved their life.
I'm so goddamn tired and I'm scared to death.

Now that I'm growing more into myself and no longer suppressing my autistic and ADHD traits l, I'm having more moments where I'm physically unable to speak l, essentially "going nonverbal", as it's known.
It's freeing, but at the same time it's scary because there are a lot of hostile and violent people out there who will never understand what it's like to be neurodivergent.
Still, I'm thankful for the Infinite Universe for freeing me from the trauma, and bringing me closer to myself every day. ❤️

I recently tried to hint at a friend that I’m pretty certain I have adhd (didn’t mention how I also am pretty damn sure I’m also autistic bc ~scared~) my friend herself has adhd & her sibling is autistic. She immediately shut me down saying that my symptoms don’t automatically mean I have adhd. She also mentioned how she can always tell when someone else is also neurodivergent & she’s certain I’m not.
That cut deep but also made me mad at her. Instead of being supportive she made me feel like shit. & scared to ever mention it to anyone again (even tho I’ve done a shitton of research & when I began seeing more BIPOC autistic ppl talk about their experience I knew that was me)
sorry if this isn’t the space to say all this but your blog always brings me comfort so it’s ok if you’re not in a headspace to want to answer this. just felt like venting 🫶🏽
hi !!
i’ve seen a lot of neurodivergent people be extremely defensive and become gatekeepers whenever someone so much as mentions the possibility of them being neurodiverse (especially with adhd and autism) to them
i think that the whole social media trend of people “faking” being adhd or autistic has caused an extensive amount of damage to the neurodivergent community
this community is supposed to be a safe haven for all neurodivergent people, whether they’re self-suspecting, self-diagnosed, officially diagnosed or anything in-between, and sadly that has been tarnished by a few fakers
your friend probably is probably defensive for that reason, or because she might’ve had to fight really hard for her diagnosis and has become very protective over it and thus very aggressive towards you when you brought it up
i do encourage you to continue to try and interact with BIPOC autistic people more, although all autistic people essentially experience the same main traits and behaviors, depending on race, the way those traits and behaviors are received varies wildly
but overall you have a much better chance at having a positive exchange with another neurodivergent person online, rather than in-person, since you can purposely go into communities that you know are probably going to be more welcoming and offer some relatability
it’s very hard going to someone you know in-real-life about you being neurodivergent and just getting shot down completely, it can be super disheartening, but it’s important to remember that there are countless people that you’ve yet to meet that will create that safe space with you to share anything neurodivergent-related and have it be received positively
and thank you very much !! i’m glad that you find comfort here and i wish you much more of it with different places and people as well ❤️

October is a time to acknowledge many different things. One of those things is AAC Awareness Month!!
• AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
• AAC is any form of communication other than spoken words. This can take the form of a speech application on a device; the use of photographs or symbols; writing; drawing; sign language; etc.
• People who are mute, or find physical speech taxing or painful such as autistic people may depend on these alternative forms of communication. And that’s neat! 📱📖📝🤟

I will never understand queer ppl who demonize other queer ppl who don't fit into hetero, eurocentric and cis normative standards like...ISNT THAT THE WHOLE POINT OF BEING QUEER????
Pronouns don't equal gender
Neopronouns have been around for CENTURIES
Non-binary genders have been around for CENTURIES and Bipoc cultures used to honor queer ppl before the spread of eurocentric standard
If you are a queer person who tries to exclude ppl who: use pronouns that you don't think matches their gender identity, Bipoc/neurodivergent/disabled queers, you push the binary onto the NON-binary, and you refuse to use ppls neos
You're the equivalent of a WHITE CIS MALE CONFEDERATE

Apparently there's a fic reading challenge thing this year, but after doing a quick skim of the goals... we don't think we'll be touching it with a ten-foot stick. Some of these goals put a VERY bad taste in our mouth. The idea of a "diversity checklist" isn't supposed to be... literal, we don't think? No? We're remembering that one quote about "listening to people of color being like eating your vegetables for white activists" and we're feeling like it may actually have been understating whatever the hell is going on here.
#we speak#also really funny to be seeing shit like “read fic from a fandom with under 250 works”. buddy we're WRITING for one of those#but also like. “read a fic where the main character is BIPOC”. “read a fic where the main character is neurodivergent"#“read a fic that passes the bechdel test”.#like we get the INTENT we guess but we're not in the target audience AT ALL#and a whole fuckin lot of the goals here are very romance focused up against us a guy who deliberately filters out ships#we're also really concerned that “passes the bechdel test” is a bar for fic but also we know The Scene here#and “passing the mako mori test”. is indeed a difficult one to find in a lot of fandoms#as someone who tends to like female characters we notice this. A Fucking Lot#we are so insanely picky with fic bc even with ao3's tagging system we need to slog through dozens of fics to find one good one#and a lot of the time we. REALLY don't have the patience for fic that doesn't have decent depictions for the gals#you have no clue how much zel da fic especially we drop for being Really Fucking Weird About Gender (in a bad way)#sometimes we forget that people exist in bigger fandoms that actually have fic reading habits like this#we feel like we're in another dimension. what do you mean you guys live like this#also what. does “deals heavily (and healthily) with a mental illness” mean. you guys arent just reading this to eat ur vegetables right?#...right???#anyways reading through things like “read fics with all the major LGBTQIA2 identities” is giving us hives#if you read our fic then we beg of you read it because it sounds like it has a nice plot not just like. because Some Guy is ace or intersex#please. gender identity should NOT be that much of a priority. read through and flag on the weird gender shit and go “oh thats queer!”#or “oh thats like me” or “oh (whatever)” but please. there are so many things here more relevant than shit like sexuality.#we need to go read through our fics and make sure we dont have any overly modern lingo in there#if you want to know about a characters sexuality or gender identity figure it out yourself from. fuck we dont know. psychic beams.#though we rationally know the reason that things in modern queer spaces are so often Like This its still poison to our brain#and we want nothing to do with it#negative chatter
