Fanfic is supposed to be fun first and foremost.

The amount of disrespect I have seen lately regarding creators is both shocking and disgusting, especially when coming from other creators, and I honestly can't stay quiet about it any longer.

Maybe I'm looking at a lot of this very closely considering I've recently taken an indefinite break from one part of creating I once really enjoyed due to such disregard for my time and effort (rip gif making), but to see such careless comments and treatment for fic authors too??? BY OTHER FIC AUTHORS???

Isn't the world already cruel enough? We should be inviting in positivity and appreciation for the works of others. To celebrate the victories and accomplishments around something that is already nerve wrecking enough as it is. We should not be cultivating a circle where tearing authors apart is acceptable, regardless of if you liked a story or not.

Would you want it done to your works???

Fandom spaces should be fun. Fanfic is a free thing, typically done in what little free time we writers have, and shared with other people for the sake of having FUN. We are not professionals. This is not our full time job. We are not paid for it. Yet to treat fanfic like a professional literary circle is just...wrong. Criticism (constructive only, and when asked for it) is fine, and if you want to shit talk in your DMs to someone else, go for it, but to outright tear someone apart for their FREE fanfic that they wrote to HAVE FUN and ENJOY the fandom with other people in a public space for all eyes (including the author themselves) to see?

Gross.

We are all from different walks of life, and have different experiences that impact why we may or may not go about fic a certain way. Some of us don't speak English as our first language, and some don't go about having a beta reader, or are on a time crunch for an event, etc. You don't know someone's life, and have zero right to talk down another creator because they don't meet your small narrow-minded criteria of what is “good”. What's “bad” and “tear apart” worthy to you, may be a gem of a story to someone else.

There is no room for “if you hated xyz's work, come talk about it with us!”, and if this is something you feel is welcome in any community, fandom, social setting....DO BETTER.

And do not interact with me.

Better jobs for Steve than being a cop: teacher, counselor, bartender, florist, librarian assistant, garden section associate, dog walker (dog groomer canon?), grocery store manager, food pantry helper, seasonal worker as a Santa’s elf….

Author Update 03/14

I’m not alright.

My emotional state has been in a serious state of flux, last week it was so bad that I called my doctor and got an appointment to have it officially looked at.

After much talk with my doctor and taking an extensive test, I was diagnosed with clinical depression

My doctor was actually shocked with how bad he said the results looked. He asked me twice if I was suicidal or not.

I’m not. But sometimes the weight of the world just gets to me. My stress is elevated and the loneliness has been increasing.

I’m not alright but I’m also not alone. And I’m not giving up. I’m fighting it daily and seeking out new things to do and proper treatments.

If there’s any point to this, I would say: don’t be afraid to admit it to yourself, seek out the proper treatment, and show grace to yourself when you feel at your lowest.

Take good care of yourself and your state of mind.

First, I spent too long working on the cover art for the finale, and I love it because it turned out really nicely! Unfortunately, as of right now, it's not actually in the show, it'd be after, but while I was drawing "The Prettiest Star" started, and I was going feral istg, so just enjoy the song ig??

LIGHT-BRINGER'S LAST SCENE COMES OUT 3/31 10AM EST

(And then I'm going to go back and rewrite stuff lol)

Next for "this shit": Uhh who knows? I'm hoping people want to see more, but who knows? I wanted to finish the screenplay/animation script/fanfiction/ah/help me/plz/blog(?) before moving forward, I'm also gonna do some rewrites, but just to make the beginning mesh with the ending! It's been really fun to re-invent a character whose original show had ended. I still cared about and was working with Uriel and I'm really glad I got the balls to post something.

Every writer writes the story they want to tell, so don’t be afraid to read what you’re writing and just have fun. Not everything has to be in service of making your manuscript better.

How are literary and Commercial Stories Different?

Literary plots are meant to explore a specific theme/convey a message to the reader.

Literary plots can be slow paced.

Literary plots can have different types of endings.

Commercial plots are meant to entertain.

Commerical plots are fast-paced.

Commercial plots must almost always have a happy ending.

For Literary Plots:

detailed characterization: authors explore the inner change and development of the character (which means the external action is going to be slower paced)

use of metaphors, symbols, and presentation of ideas in a way that requires analysis

aims to deliver a message or moral

On the other hand, Commercial Plots:

fast-paced and action oriented, delivers highly emotional scenes so entice the reader rather than ambiguous writing

uses intuitive language, setting and tropes to help readers immerse in the story world quickly

often, the stakes are a lot higher

the ending needs to provide a sense of satisfaction for the readers. Otherwise, they might not feel compensated for all the time they invested in reading.
