Fic idea where Bruce gets dosed with a new strain of fear toxin post ADitF and sees Catherine and Willis.
How do you look a mother in the eye after bastardizing the memory of her son?
What claim to fatherhood does he have after ruining Jason's chances at everything Willis died to give him?
What else is there to do when you have everything you failed to do thrown back in your face? When those you have replaced look you in the eye and demand penance?
There aren't words strong enough. There is no room for apologies here, because you know that they will not forgive you. That is not the point of this.
These ghosts are angry Bruce, their son is a bloody mangled thing on the cold concrete and you are stained with his blood. Wasn't it you who gave him the cape? You who first called him that cursed name? You who put him in harms way?
Catherine reaches out a boney, shaking hand and points to that god forsaken case. This is how you've chosen to remember my baby?
You are starkly, dreadfully aware of the inscription on that plaque. Suddenly that veneer of distance is cracking, too much pressure applied to fragile glass, causing hairline fractures on the surface.
Face your guilt, they tell him, a life for a life.
You try to tell them that you loved him too, that you didn't mean for this to happen but your words die in your throat.
Jason looks so much like Willis. He made the same face of disgusted accusation at the crooks they interviewed sometimes, when they'd done something particularly heinous but wouldn't own up to it. It gut punches him, lands with a force greater than any physical blow.
Face your guilt, they tell him, a life for a life.
He throws a shaking punch that misses by a mile. How could that happen? He's Batman, he doesn't miss, he doesn't falter or hesitate.
His heavy gauntlets collide with glass. The case cracks and the whispers spur him on. He repeats the motion with more purpose this time, reaches his hands through the hole to pry the glass apart.
A life for a life.
There's a noise, a voice maybe, from behind him but Bruce can't hear it over the sounds of wrathful mourning in his head.
Strong hands wrap around his wrist, the knuckles are bruised and the fingers are bent from too many years being broken and healed and broken again.
Willis guides the glass to Bruce's face, his hands tightly closed around a large piece that gets closer and closer to his mouth. His jaw is slack and he doesn't even think to move it. He deserves this. This is the way to forgiveness. Jason is waiting for him, he thinks he can hear his boys voice, watery and lost, calling out for Bruce.
There's blood in his mouth, burning pain in his lips and tongue but nowhere near as painful as the bloody, gaping hole in his chest where his heart has been ripped out and buried.
Hands, tangible and alive, wrench him backwards and the illusion breaks.
"Bruce!" It's Dick's voice, Dick's arms around his forearms pinning his wrists at his sides.
There's blood and glass pooling at his feet and when he looks up he can see Alfred's contained horror and Tim peaking around the corner.
No Catherine or Willis. No Jason.
"Have we found the antidote yet?" His voice is too raw to be Batman's gruffness but Bruce Wayne would not brush off the blood in his mouth so easily.
Alfred's mouth twists to form a disproving grimace but his response is curt and neutral. "Just about. Although I feel it best you wait in the observation holding until we're finished." It's not optional, despite the phrasing.
Bruce allows himself to be shut in the glass box and tries to ignore the way his hands are still shaking.

obligatory dukes childhood bedroom appreciation post, this bad boy can fit so many hyperfixatation headcanons
Tumblr media
ignore Bruce on the iv this ain't abt him..anyway childhood duke hcs for your viewing pleasure
-classic fave of mine is that dukes career as a forever dm started when he ran a campaign for a bunch of older kids when he was like 10 at the library
-and dukes favorite place was DEFINITELY the library when he was a kid. it was like baby's first mutual aid. he always returned his books on time. If there was an event, he was there, elaine and doug made sure of it. he feels like a know it all kid, the type who got in trouble for reading books about wizards under the desk instead of paying attention
- older hc but I think her wrote warrior cats fanfic basically but w dragons instead I just know he did in my heart
-in we are robin duke mentions an old childhood dream of wanting to be a paleontologist (mainly cuz he liked solving things and putting pieces together) but I dully belive the pipeline went wizards > dragons > dinosaurs (baby duke basically thought dinosaurs were like irl dragons

I know a few people already mentioned Dick hallucinating Jason visually but imagine Dick hallucinating Jason via sound. Like, he doesn't see him, but he can hear him calling and chirping for him. Dick would be so distraught and upset that he can hear him but can't find where the chirping is coming from. I'd also imagine it would be a specific type of chirp that Jason would only use when he's in trouble and in need of rescuing.
Hope you don't mind me adding more angst into this <3
Yesss!!!!
So I think I mentioned this once before, but the chirping and hooting sounds Dick and Jason (and also Bruce now, to an extent) make aren’t an actual language. It’s more of a guesswork thing. There are some sounds Dick only makes when he’s calling to Jason, so Jason knows it’s a kind of “look at me/pay attention” kind of thing. Likewise, Jason only makes his “baby cheeps” when he’s with Dick and is feeling happy/content.
There are hundreds of personalized calls between them now. Many of which Dick taught Jason, and some that they’ve come up with together while surviving on the streets. But basically most calls would “translate” to certain catch phrases, greetings or supplications. And for Jason, using “owl speech” is sometimes easier than using human words when communicating his emotions. In those instances, Dick is the one who has to translate for him if they’re taking to Bruce or Alfred lol.
Ok, getting side tracked again.
So basically you’d be absolutely right to assume there’s a bird call only Jason makes that’s meant to alert Dick 1. To his location, and 2. that he’s in danger/scared/hurt.
I’d imagine that, immediately after his death, Dick would hear these calls absolutely everywhere and frantically search for Jason, long after he remembers that his owlet is dead. Similarly to how humans sometimes think they heard a familiar voice calling their name or something. Very heartbreaking in a context where that person is dead. 😔🦉 🥀
(Yes Dick is kind of going insane with grief)

Dick Grayson Canon Lore Stuff:
(TW for Batman stuff, like spoilers and mention of injury/death) Hello, I know very little about the canon Batfamily because I can't exactly just read all of the comics (there's way too many, and they're very expensive T-T) so instead I spent like an hour reading the entire Fandom . com entry on Dick Grayson, and this is pretty much my timeline of important events that I got from that (I'm typing this in hopes that it'll help me remember it).
Dick Grayson Canon Lore Stuff:
•From a very young age Dick Grayson was trained as an acrobat, hence his job as a performer in his family's circus act.
•When he was eight years old, he overheard a well known crime boss threaten the circus performers if he wasn't paid by the circus owner. The owner didn't pay him, and that night Dick witnessed his parents high wire snap, leading to both of their deaths. (He felt responsible for not warning them)
•He was put into a juvenile service system, because social services in Gotham were full. In this system he was often beat up by the others, which led to him eventually being put into a Catholic orphanage instead.
•Bruce Wayne adopted him, but Dick didn't want to replace his deceased dad with a 'stuck up' billionaire, plus he felt like Bruce didn't give him enough attention (Probably because Bruce was still dealing with the trauma of his own parents death and didn't like getting attached to people in case he lost them as well), so he snuck out in hopes of solving his parents murder himself.
•He met Batman, also investigating the murder, which led to him finding out that Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person.
•They find the crime boss, but he 'dies of a heart attack' before he can be arrested.
•Since Bruce saw so much of himself in Dick, he asked the boy if he wanted to become his sidekick and Dick decided to name himself 'Robin' after what his mother used to call him.
•He was trained for six long, hard months before he was allowed to do any real missions, and he had to go through one full night eluding Batman without help before he was allowed to officially become Robin.
•For the first year or so Dick had a lot of fun with his job, and treated it as a fun adventure he and Bruce participated in together.
•That was until he had a fight with Two-Face, in which Batman and the DA were both stuck in nooses. Dick cut the rope around the DA with a Batarang, but Two-Face had crafted a double trap and this made the floor fall out so the DA landed in a pit of water in which he drowned. This was Dick's first time witnessing an on-the-job death which would serve to haunt him for years to come, plus he got himself a beating from Two-Face (Okay but like, wouldn't he have been like 9 or 10 max Jeezums- 😭🖐).
•Bruce temporarily 'fired' Dick, not wanting to see him get hurt any more.
•Dick served as Robin for a while longer, still working with Bruce and also forming his own Titans team.
•When Dick was 17 he got shot in his shoulder by the Joker, which prompted Bruce to officially fire him out of fear for his safety. Dick decided that he didn't need Batman anymore, plus he had some issues with the way Bruce did things, so he moved from Gotham to New York to be more involved with the Titans, and he dropped out of highschool.
•Bruce didn't really like this, and told Dick that if he was no longer going to work with him he would have to retire the Robin title. Dick left Wayne Manor afterwards, and handed over leadership of the Titans to Wondergirl.
•Unsure of himself and what he should do now, yet not wanting to give up crime fighting now that it was such a big part of his life, he went to find Superman. For a brief while Dick stayed with Superman, and Superman told him of a Krypton hero who had been known as Nightwing. Because of this time with Clark, Dick decided to finally become his own hero free of Batman. He named himself Nightwing after the Krypton hero, and made himself a costume based off of something his father once wore back in the circus.
•Now as Nightwing he helped lead the Titans, though his relationship with Starfire was worsening over time.
•Jason's death was a bit of a turning point in his character. Even though originally he hadn't seemed to like Jason (mainly because Jason acted as his replacement, and because of his not so great relationship with Bruce) Dick seemed to grow into a kinder/gentler person after the event.
•A while after this, Dick discovered that the mob boss who had killed his parents was not actually dead but was in a coma instead. Dick went looking for him, but witnessed him being gunned down before he had a chance to do anything for himself. Bruce claimed that he was worried that Dick would seek revenge for his parents death if he knew the truth, so he told the young boy that the mod boss was dead instead. Dick was obviously upset because of this, and his relationship with Bruce stayed strained.
•While he was still serving with the Titans, Tim Drake sought him out and asked him to return to being Robin (Because after Jason's death Bruce was going crazy without a Robin by his side), but Dick refused because of his bad relationship with Bruce and his enjoyment for his current job. He did help Tim become Robin, though.
•A lot of bad things happened with the Titans, people passed, people left, people changed, but Dick fought to stay the heart and center of the team through it all.
•Despite their strained relationship, Dick tried to impulsively marry Starfire, but the ceremony was interrupted, which eventually led to Starfire leaving and returning to her home planet.
•Bruce was brutally injured by Bane, but because his relationship with Dick was so bad and he didn't want to 'force' his son to return, he temporarily gave the Batman title to the not-so-stable Jean Paul Valley, with Tim there to help him out. Jean proved too unstable, however, and Dick returned to Gotham to help Tim deal with him. Dick decided to step away from the Titans to focus on Gotham, and the still healing Bruce asked him to be Batman until he was alright again which Dick agreed to.
•During his time acting as Batman, Dick built a great brotherly relationship with Tim. In addition, Bruce admitted that he hadn't originally asked Dick to act as Batman for him because he didn't want to force him to come back, and the two finally began to fix their relationship.
•Dick pretends to be a villain working under Deathstroke for a while, until Deathstroke betrays him and kills at least 100,000 people with a bomb. Dick tries to find and help any survivors, but is unable to because of the radiation which weighs heavily on his mind. He also proposes to Barbara Gordon around this time.
•Dick recovers and Bruce asks him to join him and his current Robin in rediscovering his roots. Dick is hesitant, but Barbara insists that he helps, and suspends their engagement for the time being.
•Dick returns to the Titan's tower, because there's someone there pretending to be him. Turns out it's the revived Jason Todd!
•While on a case, he gets buried alive by a mysterious voice that tells him he's 'supposed to be dead'. He has a hard time finding work because he's in a cast, and is having some trouble due to his injuries.
•By this point his relationship with both Bruce and Tim have improved dramatically, and he's close with both of them.
•The Titans decide to reform their group.
•Okay I'm gonna try and put this as simply as possible… Bruce was targeted by a group called 'Black Glove', supposedly going insane and running away. Dick doesn't want Tim to have to deal with everything himself, so he returns. He gets kidnapped and drugged by the International Club of Villains and is scheduled for a lobotomy, but gets out of it because Bruce's 'insanity' was made up to expose the Black Glove. Batman fights with Doctor Hurt on a helicopter, but the helicopter explodes. Batman is fine and works with the Justice League, but then is seemingly killed in his confrontation with Darkseid. In his will, Bruce begs Dick not to become Batman. Because of his refusal to become Batman, someone else takes up the job instead, calling himself Batman but using lethal methods that Bruce would never allow. This 'Batman' is actually Jason Todd, who shoots Damian and almost kills Tim with a Batarang. Dick and Jason fight and Dick shoves Jason off of a speeding train, seemingly killing him though Jason says they'll 'Meet again soon'. Dick finally decides to become the official Batman, but refuses to make Tim his Robin because according to him, he sees Tim as his equal and not his sidekick. He instead makes Damian his new Robin, which of course pisses off Tim. Tim, believing Bruce to be alive, takes up Jason's old Red Robin mantle and goes searching for Bruce. Dick moves base because the Batcave reminds him too much of Bruce, and struggles because Damian is constantly reminding and taunting him over the fact that he will never truly be able to replace his father. When he next fights Jason, Jason remarks that if the Lazarus pit could revive him, it could revive Bruce too as he's being arrested.
There's quite a bit of stuff that happens in between here, most notably the death of a young boy called Baby D which influences Dick's future character, but since I've been typing for hours:
Thinking about what Jason said, Dick takes Bruce's body from his grave and takes him to the Lazarus Pit. While it does reanimate the corpse, the revived 'Bruce' is angry and violent. This is because it was never Bruce at all, it was actually a clone of him. This gives Dick, Damian, and Alfred a similar hope to Tim, that Bruce is actually still alive. Tim brings evidence that Bruce is actually lost in time, and after a bit of digging and more evidence finding, they manage to bring Bruce back.
•Dick finally becomes Nightwing again, now with red on his costume which reflects his darker and more grim outlook on life and humanity after his time as Batman.
•Nightwing gets stabbed on a mission.
•He also, on a different mission, momentarily dies but they manage to start his heart again.
•Dick puts down his Nightwing title for a while and becomes a secret agent for Bruce, but the wiki has no info on this.
•Dick goes back to being Nightwing, finally returning to his original black and blue suit instead of the black and red one. He reforms the titans, but after working with them for a bit, but ends up moving back to Blüdhaven soon after.
•Someone is sent to assassinate Dick, and he gets shot in the head. He manages to survive, though he has amnesia and for a brief while becomes 'Ric Grayson' until he gets his memories back. When Ric tries to restore his memories he is kidnapped by the Joker who brainwashes him into believing that he was the Joker's sidekick, though he's eventually rescued and gets his memories back. After this event, he officially rejoins the Batman Family as Nightwing.
•There's no info after this.
Grrrrr I might do this for the other characters but idk because this took forever and I am tired lmao

The Ghost King (of Miscommunication) Ch. 23
Part 1-12,Part 13,Part 14,Part 15, Part 16, Part 17, Part 18, Part 19, Part 20, Part 21, Part 22
Part 23!
***
Jason knows he should probably still be wary, not knowing much about ghosts - let alone ghost royalty, whatever that means - but he can’t help but feel safe.
He’s felt an overwhelming sense of safe ever since Danny tackled him, but he’d been fighting it the whole time, worrying about falling for some kind of trap.
And okay, maybe it should have taken more than two feet of personal space with a portal and a conversation that painted Danny as more air-headed than malicious but could have been faked. But…Jason wants to extend his trust.
And for the first time in years he can. No Pit lingering in the background to ruin everything at the most inconvenient possible time.
He wants to put his trust in Danny, and he wants that to be the right choice.
He thinks it will.
Danny isn’t a fae; there are no ‘rules of hospitality’ binding him, to Jason’s knowledge, meaning the room and the food - sketchy as it was - and the introductions and explanations were just…him being polite.
Because he wanted to be.
The snowball fights and flight lessons and tours weren’t just part of some malicious plot to get him to let his guard down; they were genuine attempts to help him feel more comfortable or to cheer him up.
So yeah, Jason could give him a chance to explain.
Starting with-
“So what was with the syringe?” he asks as they sit, skeletons floating up dutifully to serve their food.
“Syringe?” Danny blinks owlishly as he settles into his chair after a moment’s pause to stare at the scorch marks - Sam and Tucker taking their place where Jazz and Spike had sat before.
“Back at the Far Frozen, when I was hesitant about the food…” he offers.
“Oh!” Danny smiles,“You mean the ecto-dejecto? It’s basically just fast food for ghosts - and halfas!” He hurries to add, as if Jason knows what that means.
They’ll come back to that.
“Ah, so it wasn’t a threat to eat the food or else,” Jason hms.
Danny’s shoulders droop.
“No, it wasn’t. It was just…another option. You could have chosen neither - relying on ambient ectoplasm would have slowed your recovery but I would have respected your choice. I’m sorry for not being more clear.” He laughs and runs a hand through his hair. “Ancients, I’m surprised you didn’t just blast me with the bazooka.”
“I still didn’t - and don’t - know how to leave on my own yet,” Jason shrugs.
“That’s… fair,” Danny concludes, wincing.
“Give me another day and I’ll have your portal gun ready,” Tucker says, holding out his wrist to show a sleek black and gold watch. “It’ll be just like mine - works based on coordinates, with separate systems for the Zone and the Living World plus the option to save frequent locations under a quick-click menu.”
Jason watches attentively as he presses a button as he speaks, causing what looks like a smaller, better-painted-job-having version of the Wrist Rays’ barrel with a small holoscreen over top of it to pop out of the unassuming watch.
When he tilts his wrist, Jason can see the bar to enter coordinates at the top and his top two frequent locations - ‘The Phantom Palace’ and ‘Technoland’ - just beneath it.
Swiping left leaves the coordinate bar, but replaces the locations list with ‘Grave’ and ‘Monument.’
He clicks one and it shoots open a portal just behind Danny. When he clicks it again the beam zips it closed.
“I can give you a different paint-job or display style,” he offers, showing him how to open the keyboard and scroll before closing it all down and slipping it off of his wrist. “Until then, you can use mine.”
He smiles, holding the portal ‘gun’ watch out to him.
He looks at the watch, then from Tucker to Sam to Danny.
They all smile and nod encouragingly.
He takes it and carefully slips it over his left wrist - opposite the ‘Ray - and it shrinks to fit him just as the Ray had.
He smiles, nerves far more settled now that he can leave whenever he wants.
Realizes he really isn’t trapped here.
They were telling the truth.
(He’s safe)
He still has a million questions he needs answered, but he should probably let his family - and the JL - know he’s okay sooner rather than later.
Bruce - everyone, really - will demand a full debrief if he goes in person. He doesn’t have enough answers for that just yet.
Luckily, they have codes for just such a situation.
“Anyone have paper and pen?”
Sam whips a void-black A4 sheet of paper out of nowhere, and Danny does the same with a snow-white pen.
He snorts a laugh at the swapped colors and scribbles out a quick explanation followed by the codes to verify that he’s not under duress, being controlled, etc.
Then he folds it up, opens a portal just over the batcomputer’s keyboard - sticking his face through briefly to verify he got the right place - and drops it through.
The usual gnawing curiosity can replace their panic and Jason can take his time getting answers.
“So. ‘Ecto-dejecto’ and the air in here are the same as the food? Which is all made of ‘ectoplasm’ which is…what?”
“It's probably most accurate to compare it to carbon,” Sam answers. “Most Living, organic matter - plants and animals both - is carbon-based - at least on Earth - whereas most entities in the Zone are ecto-based. Except it’s more ‘ecto-everything.’”
“Yeah,” Danny continues, “The, ah, ‘air’ is just a lot less concentrated than food - while Ecto-dejecto is more concentrated and is generally only used when we’re in a hurry or heavily injured. We don’t really ‘eat’ ectoplasm in the same way a human eats food, it’s more like, ah, batteries?”
“Batteries.” he deadpans, Sam and Tucker poorly smothering their grins in their drinks.
“Like if batteries had mouths,” Danny tries. “They don’t really need the electricity anywhere specific as long as they, y’know, charge? Kind of.”
“So I’m half a battery.”
Tucker loses the fight against his laughter at that.
Danny smiles briefly, but his face quickly sobers.
“No,” he takes a breath. “What I said earlier is true; you are no more dead now than you were when I found you. But when I found you, you were already what is known as halfa - half a human, and half a ghost.”
Jason’s face steels, anger rising.
“So I am dead.”
“Only half,” Danny smiles grimly.
“You can't be half dead! And if I’m so unchanged then why do I look like this!” He snaps, standing from his chair to gesture at himself. “Because I sure as shit didn’t look like a walking reminder of the worst day of my life before!”
“You can be half dead, I'm half-dead. And you were already a halfa when I found you,” Danny starts, voice empathetic as he floats out of his chair to lay a tentative hand on Jason’s shoulder, “But you were unwell. Your core was barely formed, and it’s a miracle you were still alive at all. It’s a miracle you made it to Frostbite.”
Jason sits and crosses his arms, hearing him out but hating every second of it.
(I can’t be dead)
“You must have an incredible amount of will to have kept yourself in one piece for as long as you did,” Danny commends, following Jason’s lead and sitting back down, “but if you’d remained as you were for much longer your still-forming core would have eventually cannibalized itself in an effort to finish forming, causing a collapse that would have not only killed you all the way, but would have erased you from existence entirely, nothing left but memories.”
“Entering the Ghost Zone gave your core the resources it needed, but all of the tainted ectoplasm you’d managed to absorb slowed things down. Thus all the mornings spent in the tube to filter it out. Like blood transfusions. Except it's more like food instead of blood….”
Danny trails off squinting into the distance.
“Great,” Jason says, regaining his attention. “That still doesn’t explain why I look like this - or what a core even is other than ‘dangerous if poorly formed.’”
“Oh, boy. Okay. A core is the only organ a ghost has,” Danny explains. “Like a brain and heart and liver all in one. Even if you were reduced to nothing but your core, you’d still be perfectly fine - more vulnerable, sure, but that doesn’t matter as long as you’re with any ghost that doesn’t actively want to end you permanently. As a halfa, you have both a human and a ghost form.”
Danny shifts into his own human form at this.
“But ghosts don’t form until after their cores do, so until you were healed enough you couldn’t access your ghost form. Staying in ghost form allows you to absorb ambient ectoplasm and ectoenergy more efficiently…wait.”
His eyes widen as he looks into Jason’s own shocked face.
“Did- do you- Ancients you don’t know how to transform back into a human do you?”
“I do not and would very much like to,” Jason stresses, unbelieving at the whole half-dead thing but just barely willing to hope.
“Okay. Okay. As a halfa you have both a ghost form and a human form - like two sides of a coin. Both are you, but when you’re in one, the other is in a sort of personal pocket dimension. You can swap between them by sort of…reaching for what you want. For example, I have an ice core,” His eyes glow a brighter blue.
“And my core - as most cores are - is located in roughly the same area as my heart. So when I’m in human form, I reach for the spot of cold just metaphorically ‘behind’ my heart-” he transforms back into Phantom “-and pull it to the surface.”
“When I want to swap back into human form, I reach for the warmth of my heart just ‘behind’ my core.”
Jason tries to focus on his chest, but he’s mostly just confused.
He looks up to find a hand offered to him.
“Here, I can trigger your transformation the first few times.”
Jason takes his hand eagerly.
“We’ll do three swaps - human, ghost, human - then you can try it for yourself. For now, just focus on how it feels.”
Rings of light appear around both of their waists this time, Jason is grateful for the large chairs as he suddenly takes up a lot more space than he had.
(He’s alive)
He only has a moment to take in how much smaller everything looks and how cold Danny’s once luke-warm hands feel before the lights are sweeping over them again.
The rings sweep up and down like the light of a photocopier, but he can’t help but notice it doesn’t feel that way.
It feels like a cool gust of wind blooming from a single point in his chest, swirling out until it permeates to the very last layer of his skin.
(He’s dead)
He’d expected discomfort from the cold of the description, but it’s all soothing breeze on a warm, sunny day instead of the arctic winds in winter he’d worried it might be.
Small again. It’s almost comfortable, if not for the sour memories every time he sees his reflection in this form.
And then they’re switching again - he pays even more attention this time, less distracted by the unfamiliar lightshow and determined to learn how to be human on his own.
It’s the feeling of lying in a sunbeam in spring, all warmth and comfort.
(His heart still beats)
It was comfortable, going from ghost to human and going from human to ghost.
(His heart hasn’t beaten in over a week)
It didn’t hurt.
(He’s… both?)
Everything had hurt so much the first time he died. The first time he came back.
It didn’t hurt.
(It doesn’t hurt)
His mask hides the few tears that escape.
He shakes his head and takes stock of his body; he feels different.
He doesn’t feel bad - his body is the same overall - fingers and toes all still move, no missing legs or eyes, etc etc.
No glowing.
Except his arm - which had had another 2 weeks to finish recovering from a break - didn’t hurt at all. He couldn’t feel any of the lesser scuffs and bruises one generally got from tumbling around Gotham as a vigilante/crime lord at night.
He barely registers Sam and Tuckers staring until Sam turns to Danny and says “You thought he was shy.”
Danny throws his hands into the air. “Just because he’s tall doesn’t mean he’s not shy! And he’s from Gotham! You’ve heard what it’s like! I don’t know what happened to him! I try not to judge!”
“Dude,” Tucker starts, “Danny. My moon and stars. My battery babe.”
“B-battery-”
He points to Jason, ignoring Danny’s sputtering protest.
“He is literally Red Hood. The Crime Lord.”
“Moving back towards vigilante, actually,” Jason says absently, checking his weapons - guns blessedly all there and in one piece. And comms are completely non-functional.
“Of course our son would be a vigilante,” Sam snorts, shaking her head with a smile.
“Only if he wants to be,” Danny adds.
“A vigilante?” Tucker asks.
“Our son.”
“Well, both are optional honestly,” Sam adds.
Jason realizes what’s missing: the portal watch.
He reaches for the cold spot in his chest - so much easier to find now that he knows what to look for - and pulls.
It takes a few tries, but eventually the rings - white, he notices, with a tinge of green around the edges where Danny’s had been blue - are sweeping over him again.
He’s left tiny, with only the wrist ray and the grappling hook and brace of batarangs he’d nabbed from the cave, but none of the guns. He enjoys being armed in both forms, so he leaves the weapons and tugs the watch off to set on the table, then spends twice as long scrabbling for his human form, nerves getting in the way of his focus.
The portal watch is still on the table when he’s back to big, beating heart, and fully armed.
He gently pulls the device onto his now much larger wrist, smiling as it flexes once again to a perfect fit.
As a ghost he can fly, and as a human he can portal.
Weapons and escape options for both forms.
He frowns when he realizes he can’t eat with his mask on.
Just because they know his name is Jason doesn’t mean they know which Jason - he shifts back into his ghost form just as he’s thinking about it.
It’s a bit startling, given he hadn’t done it on purpose - even if he’d been just about to - but he ignores that in favor of hastily taking a bite of his glowing salad before addressing the…adoption thing.
“So,” he starts, “Ellie mentioned…being my ‘sister.’ And this is the third time I’m hearing adoption-adjacent stuff…. I feel the need to remind you that despite my small ghost form, I’m 23. And a crime lord.”
Jason wasn’t a fan of the look they shared.
“You might be 23 in human years, but you’re barely a week old as a ghost,” Sam says, pointing at him with her fork. “For which, only the time from core formation actually counts.”
“The basis of ghost culture is combat,” Danny continues. “Ghosts are pretty much as dead as they get - it takes real, significant effort to destroy a mature core - so throwing hands kind of became a way to say hello.”
“But a formed core and a mature core are two different things,” Tucker picks up. “A core might fully form in as little as a few seconds, but it will take anywhere from years to decades to mature. Until then your core will be less durable than a mature one - not much, but enough to be worrying. It’s a bad combo with ‘still acquiring basic powers’ - especially considering mature ghosts tend to have a lot of powers at their disposal.”
“Ghosts with immature cores are called ‘baby ghosts.’ Which is what you are.” Danny adds, damningly. “Picking adult ghosts to stick close to will help your core mature faster and keep you safe from the less-kind ghosts in the meantime. Even the most independent baby ghosts tend to stick with an adult ghost until they’ve at least mastered flight, invisibility, intangibility, and ecto-blasts. As more emotional beings, ghosts also tend to get attached to each other quickly and jump into the ‘we’re family now’ thing.”
“Plus even if you weren’t a baby ghost you could still be dibsed as family,” Sam concludes.
“‘Dibsed’” Jason repeats blankly, choosing to reply to the least embarrassing part of all that.
“That’s the best way I can think of to describe it,” Sam shrugs. “Sometimes ghosts just go ‘welp that’s my kid/parent/cousin/sibling/whatever now’ and roll with it. Danny has, like, 10 ghost-parents - and only two of them are his actual parents.”
“But,” Danny adds, “There’s no pressure to feel the same. You don’t have to see us as your parents or even your friends. If you want to find different ghost parents, we can help you with that. Or if you just want to return to Gotham and be left alone, we can figure something out - send you ecto-dejecto to help with growth or mark safe parts of the Zone for you to portal to in your free time. Plus there’s an emergency button built into the phone - just click the back button five times - if any other ghosts try to bother you-”
“We can also trick you out with all the weapons you could ever need - or want - to make up the difference in powers-growth,” Sam interjects, speaking Jason’s language.
“-Whatever your choice,” Danny continues, “just know that you can always return here - whether you have questions about being a halfa, need help controlling your powers, you need somewhere safe to crash, or just because you want to be here.”
And that’s…a lot.
A lot of emotions.
A lot of answers.
Another dozen questions he wants to ask (such as ‘what other powers am I supposed to expect?’ and ‘Will they show up as randomly - and worryingly - as flight had?’ and ‘hey, I just turned back into ghost mode suddenly, how do I not do that when I’m out in civvies.’ And also ‘what the fresh ~fuck~ was pit rage, then?)
The day is nearly over, his family knows he’s safe by now - there’s almost always someone using the batcomputer (albeit mostly Tim and Barb) - and Jason no longer has any major qualms about crashing here for an extra night.
He doesn’t know how to feel about the whole…adoption thing.
(And it’s harder, now, to ignore the feeling of warmth)
(The feeling of home and welcome in this place he now knows is a set of open arms rather than a gilded cage)
(Now that he knows he is welcome to come and go as he pleases, that there was never any true possessiveness to it despite it starting out as a kidnapping)
(And his core aches to say “Yes. Family. Mine.”)
(Home. Safety.)
(But he has a family)
(He wants his human family too)
But he could always do with more allies.
He looks at Danny, grins, and asks “So about that Bazooka…”
***
🎉Happy New Year!🎉

Freakshow & Jason
I
Idea what if Freakshow's orb/something similar works on Jason : I  but it takes a while for the group to realize he being mind controlled eoe
until the fact that he's completely silent and doing petty thieving or maybe even some dirtier work for freakshow uou
maybe its a fragment of the orb so it only works on one subject at a time. Freakshow didn't mean to use it on Jason(red hood) but found out it works. Maybe stole it and was caught but then it turns out it works eoe
Go
This is an interesting idea. And it’d be so different from his ‘normal’ criminal behavior. You’ve made me curious
I
LOL
yes because at first the bats think Jason lost it again
but then it gets stranger
Go
I think it’s like: “alright, Jason fell off the band wagon. What elaborate thing is he going to try this time?”
And then, “wait a minute… this doesn’t seem right”
I
yess
because it seems odd what he's stealing and why there is no banter when confronted… then realize he isn't in control
maybe to restore the orb or maybe restore some other artifact is Freakshow's goal
Go
Maybe
I
one to use on Phantom and maybe even more than ghosts
Go
Yep, you’ve got me intrigued
I
i just thought it be an interesting way to merge the worlds without any of the heroes really involved
Go
And Jason’s proved that he can rely on muscle memory when his mind isn’t there
I
like Danny Phantom n stuff
yes
lol imagine they do defeat freakshow and they see a picture of a white hair kid on a dart board XD
Go
And they’re like, should we go make sure this kid is okay?
At least investigate him
I
yes probably figured out through freakshows monologuing that "Phantom" is his next target
ugh damn cant explain my thoughts
I can see this causing a lot of inner conflict too. Because Jason would have been aware they thought he just went off the deep in. Also concern(especially Batman) there might be more relics that affect Jason like that too.
Go
Yep! Though, as a neat side note. In Nightwing: Blood Brothers (not brothers in blood- that’s a different storyline). Someone is impersonating Jason… and Dick is like, “was this you?” Jason tells him ‘no’ and that’s good enough for Dick
I
oooo
Go
It’s weird. Jason canonically thinks he’s closest with Tim (post crazy days) due to their shared ‘they’re living in Dick’s shadow’… but in reality, Dick’s probably the one who’s actually closest to Jason in the family
Save for Alfred
I
that's what it seems like to me LOL from limited view I had.
Alfred is the exception to them all
i would read just a comic of Alfred’s interactions with all the bats :I
Go
We just need a compilation of just Alfred’s sass
I
mmhm
that would also be good reference LOL
but yea i just thought this be a neat way to introduce the bats to Phantom. Ooo make them go to amity park....
I like thinking of setups for big stories.. eAe (my brain think in show logic LOL how to continue story to story )
Go
Oh, because the idea hit me. What if Freakshow ground up what was left of his orb and it was the powder that affected Jason?
I
Ooooo
Go
Tumblr media
Also, I’m now convinced it’s red obsidian
I
maybe because Freakshow comes from a family of ghost obsessed parents he has recognize red hood was something ghostly
Go
Which is both stupidly hard and brittle at the same time
And is associated with spirits
I
and since it was already shattered
it probably wasn't that hard to ground up
Go
Exactly!
It’s also stupidly sharp
Uh, obsidian is the sharpest natural substance known to man. They were looking into making surgical tools with it
I
maybe trick red hood into going after him. amg imagine red hood not being affected at first because the helmet but once he takes the helmet off he inhales it. Making him bust out freakshow who just got arrested.
Bats assuming it was just a jail break because more than freakshow got loose.
Oooo
thats neat >:O
Go
Oh, if the dust from it is on the helmet and Jason accidentally inhales it while cleaning it…
I
yess
Jason probably feeling stupid for it though ToT
but eoe maybe the bats find the dust on the rag in his apartment
or safehouse he was last in eoe
once they realize he isn't acting normal even for Jason
Go
Either stupid or frustrated. He knows he needs to take precautions due to fear toxins and the pollens and stuff Ivy uses… but at the same time, stone dust. Why should that affect him?
I
yes maybe he just got into a fight with his family too well more an argument(probably with Bruce) while finishing his rounds so he was just angry and frustrated
Also why the bats think Jason might have lost it
Go
Yes. Especially if a physical altercation happened…
I
oo yes reason he was just so ready to rip off the helmet without a second thought and clean everything as normal
he was still just pissed off
which leads to him being controlled and lead to the bats thinking they caused Jason to loose it.. but then figure out something isn't right. Do some investigating of where he last been before this. After the fight.. finding the red dust on a clothes and some trace of it where Jason sat down.
Go
Poor Jason
I
they did assume he lost it
but perhaps focusing on the person Freakshow really wanted to target, will distract him some. Cause Jason probably heard a lot in that state.. and the picture looked like a kid.
all the other bats feeling so guilty for just thinking he lost it… especially if Jason calls them out
Go
Yeah - I think it’s stated in freakshow’s original episode that the other ghosts know what’s going on but had lost their free will… though Danny’s memories are hazy…?
I might be wrong
It’s been a while
And since it’s powdered, would the effects wear off after a while?
L
I would think so
I
its been a while too
yes i imagine so
so by the time the bats intervene/know what's wrong Jason is able to fight control. Ooo imagine him pretending he's not for a moment so he can get a drop on freakshow eoe
Go
He would do that
I
bats intervene just to find out the thing wore off and Jason was just fishing for more info now LOL
freakshow order Jason to attack he just dropkicks him instead like yeah... no : I ur dirty trick wore off
Go
“I mean, it’s fun to have an excuse to antagonize the bat and his birds, but you decided to control me, and I don’t particularly like that”
I
LOL yes Though he probably would have wanted to punch them all for taking so long : I  but that would make them think he was doing it because someone told him to and he doesn't appreciate that.
Jason’s memories hazy but very clearly remember moments of maybe like Dickie trying to convince him to stop, brief moments of Freakshow monologuing... and now he got the tailor end of what Freakshow was planning to do.
Gi
also if i may throw my two cents: Jason would snap out of it if he's being ordered to harm/kill a kid
I
of course~
lol just now imagining they go to investigate and Danny staying as far from them as he can XD because ppl that come from out of town asking about him cant be good : I

I’ve never been into dcu before but I’ve been binging batfam stuff and lore videos for 3 days because I watched one thing about Jason Todd fell in love with him instantly and then I needed to know where he fit in Batman lore since there are 700 robins and ended up finding out about his whole family
Is that how this works with batfam fans? Because damn there’s a lot of you and I’m curious if it typically starts with one robin, like, you just find your robin and then whoops the rest of them come as a package deal now? Because I feel like that might be the case lol

Euthanasia: Aftermath
Characters: Willis Todd, Jason Todd (mentioned), Bruce Wayne (mentioned), Sheila Haywood (mentioned), Joker (Mentioned)
Warnings: Death, violence, implied/referenced torture, Willis loves his son but makes a lot of questionable choices, he also explicitly blames Bruce for Jason's death, this story can be read within the same universe as Spotlight Overture but like WAY in the future
Tumblr media
Willis stares blankly at the grave in front of him. The weeping angel looms above, wings relaxed and stone gaze piercing. The sword it's holding looks real, almost out of place on a silent mourner. A vigilant protector, a sentry to look after it's charge.
He hopes she's more successful than he was. Than the Bat was.
He's surprised Wayne buried Jason in a public graveyard, but maybe he shouldn't be. Men like him don't react well to failure. Why would he want a reminder in his backyard?
Willis would scoff, but he's here to pay respects, and his little boy deserves better. Slowly, he reins in the cold anger simmering in his gut, the grief settling cold and heavy on his skin like mid morning fog.
"Hey kiddo," his voice is gruff but he doesn't care, he's honestly impressed he can speak at all around the lump in his throat, "it's been a while." What's it been, six years? Seven? He'd like to say he's been counting the seconds, but mostly it's been a struggle to make it to the next day.
Jason was supposed to be safe. He'd been content to never see his son again, as long as he was being taken care of. Jason wasn't supposed to die anyway.
He'd had so much ahead of him. School, and college, and marriage, and kids and whatever else he damn well pleased because he was a Wayne, and Wayne's always got what they wanted.
It's not a Wayne's name on the grave. This is the resting place of Jason Todd, and Todd's have always had rotten luck.
He avoids making eye contact with the grave next to Jason's, the tall headstone with the little cherubs carved into it. Sheila was no mother, no matter what that plaque says. He knows two wrongs don't make a right, but when he held Jason in his arms the first time he'd been sure his boy was the exception.
And Jason was. Smart, and witty, and sweet, and brave. Maybe if he'd been born somewhere else, to someone else, he'd have had a little more time.
Willis doesn't notice when he sinks to his knees. Doesn't care about the mud staining his pants or the rain drops starting to beat down on his worn leather jacket. He traces the letters of his boy's name with numb fingers.
"...Cathy said you were named after a hero." He tells Jason absently. "Did you know Jason means healer? You...you told me you wanted to be a doctor once. And you always made sure we kept the first aid kit full, even when the cabinets were empty. And you'd stay up late even on school nights for me to come home so you could put dinosaur bandaids on all my little cuts and bruises." His voice breaks on a wheeze and his vision blurs.
"Oh my sweet boy," he chokes on a sob, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry m'sorrym'sorry-"
He wonders, distantly, who it was Jason called for. Who he considered his dad when he took his last breath.
Wonders who Jason would be more disappointed in, if he could see both of the fucking idiots he'd trusted now.
If he were a good man he'd say he was equally to blame, that he doesn't resent Bruce Wayne, that he doesn't care who the last person Jason thought about was as long as it brought him comfort.
Most would say that he is stubborn, vengeful, and possessive. He wouldn't argue with them. Wayne had possibly the easiest kid to take care of in the world, and had still fucked it up. Wayne had all the means to take care of Jason, and yet Willis is kneeling at his son's grave. His son. His little boy. The baby he'd held in his arms, the toddler he'd helped walk, the kid he helped with homework, and took on fishing trips. The boy he taught how to fix a car and throw a punch.
He loves Jason. Has always loved him, probably won't ever stop until he's in the ground right beside him.
But there is a debt to be paid. A life lost is a life owed. The Alley has rules, and although Willis has never been good with those, this is one he wouldn't hesitate with.
The clowns back in Arkham, cheerfully locked away with hands drenched in Jason's blood. The Bat will not protect it from him. Willis will hunt it down and repay every blow tenfold.
He unzips the duffel bag at his side, digging around until under autopsy reports and bolt cutters he finds the tool he's looking for. The crowbar is long, a little rusted but sturdy. More than good enough for this job, he decides, gripping it loosely.

He notices how Chihiro has changed a lot from the beginning and how it reminds him of himself
He was cheering for Chihiro doing the scene when she was helping the river spirit get clean but wondered what that rice herb cake was for.
He cries at the scene when Haku comforts Chihiro when she was crying and eating onigiri because he knows she being through so much at her age just to save her loved ones
(Btw you made onigiri and bought konpeito)
Shock when Haku has a dragon form and was injured but was relieved when he managed to get healed due to the medicine she gotten from the river spirit
When he sees the bath workers blaming Sen for No-Face’s rampage, he grumbled how it was their fault for indulging and encouraging bad behavior, since he feels ‘No-Face’ is a blank state.

How to Become a Step-Dad: Lore
Edited: 10/16/2023
While I am currently in between writing chapters I thought I’d release a little bit of the lore that will be incorporated in the story or that I think is canon but might not get mentioned since the story is mostly Jason’s perspective.
What’s up with Jason?
So in this au Jason went through basically all his canon backstory and stuff already so that’s established and done with. Some smaller points that may or may not come up are things like his possession of the all-blades, his time on Nanda Parbat, Talia essentially adopting him, or his experience being Catatonic. Speaking of which, I have decided his resurrection came from his righteous anger combining with the ectoplasm in Gotham’s atmosphere, and he is essentially a revenant for the purposes of this story (he’s about a fourth ghost? Or maybe 3/4ths? 3/5ths? Idk yet).
He does already have a reputation in the Infinite Realms as “The Avenger” and “Son/Knight of Gotham” due both to the existence of city spirit Lady Gotham and the ghosts of people who’ve died in Gotham. He actually has a rabid fan club who want him to kill the Joker( if he became a ghost he’d be tried and banished to the nightmare realm).
I am also going to use “the pits are corrupted ectoplasm” trope in the story. However, they’re gonna be corrupted less in the sense of being straight-up poison and more in the sense of eating a weird mushroom with weird side effects (rage, slightly sentient/vocal core, white trauma streak)
As for his relationship with the Bat Family, we’ve moved to a point where everyone’s more or less made up. For Jason and Bruce specifically, they are now more civil. Their relationship is less “ What you’re doing is wrong and you have to stop.” vs “ I’m just doing what you won’t” and now it’s more “ I don’t fully approve of your decisions, but as long as you’re not killing people and coming home for dinner, I don’t care enough to nag you about it” vs “ You’re my dad and I love you. Plus actively killing people is no longer super necessary so I will give in but I still enjoy pissing you off”.
In terms of sibling relationships, Jason has like the cool older brother vibe but he’s actually the semi-responsible one that feeds you when you come over and makes you do homework and sleep properly. He’s still down for shenanigans but is low-key a mom friend. (Dick is not the “responsible one” he is a certified chaos gremlin. Not to say he can’t be responsible, he’s just not the one enforcing these things. He cares more about your social, emotional, and/or, mental state and would help you skip school to steal a penguin or go to ComiCon or smth if you said it was a “mental health day”). I think he has semi-regular hangouts with his siblings on a weekly basis.
I like to think that he and Damien did have a bit of interaction when they were both with the League so they do have a close bond there. He’s definitely apologized to Tim a bunch of times and they’re pretty close now they like scheming together, especially on how to annoy Bruce. Overall he’s largely made up and re-integrated with the family. It’s going to be mentioned later in the story that they resurrected his civilian identity as Jason Todd, so he can publicly be seen with his family and also to do work with the family.
This brings me to my next point of lore: that as Jason gains more control of Crime Alley, he focuses his efforts more into charity work. He’s helping the people get their education, get better access to healthcare, get better job opportunities, running soup kitchens, etc., and doing more humanitarian-focused work. He has got a pretty firm grip on crime and drugs so he’s shifting his focus more towards helping the people now. Even just being part of his gang can be helpful because he works with the Goonion (Goon Union) and offers good insurance plans and stuff. That’s part of the reason they resurrect his civilian identity is so that he can start working with/taking over the Wayne foundation.
What’s up with Danny and Ellie?
Okay so first things first in the story Danny is going to be the ghost prince (not king yet for a long while) and he acts as a junior member on the Council of Ancients who rule with Clockwork acting as his main regent. Meaning that Council + Danny make decisions and Clockwork is Danny’s ghost dad and is formal regent but mostly just handles things with help from the council. Essentially, after at least a couple thousand years Danny will be considered “of age” or eligible and take over the Infinite Realms; and after several billion he’ll become the ancient of space/reality and essentially become a god or primordial being of sorts. Also being of age is different than being an adult ghost. To be an adult ghost you need to have been a ghost for at least 20 years after your lifetime, unless you’re an eternal kid ghost like Youngblood or BoxLunch. So ghosts like Technus, the Box Ghost, and Lunch Lady are all adult ghosts. Whereas ghosts like Johnny 13, Kitty and maybe Ember either aren’t yet adult ghosts or became adult ghosts recently. Ellie ranks as princess and second-in-line, she’ll go through a similar process and eventually join the Council, become a diplomat, and/or rule as regent if/when Danny leaves the Ghost Zone. I’m gonna say all other afterlife’s and stuff are connected to the Zone and their respective leaders make up Phantom’s Court. (So basically he’s king and they are like the nobles). They all govern their own territories and Phantom handles any rouges or conflicts. When Ellie gets older she’ll move between realms on diplomatic missions to lighten some of Danny’s work. I haven’t decided what this means for anyone who is currently mortal and/or liminal. I might just have them live, fulfilling lives and pass away and move on to different afterlives. Or I might have them take places within the Phantom’s court or as advisors. And on the topic: Jazz, the Fenton parents, Sam, and Tucker are all fairly liminal, Jazz and the Dr.s Fenton a bit more than the other two. Everyone in Amity has a little bit of liminality, but not enough to affect their life spans or anything. Also, Vlad is still currently his usual, creepy, Frootloopy-self. But after screwing him over in this fic eventually, I want to have him arrested by the ghost police and spend several thousand years in ghost prison before he gets let out. Then he works on improving his relationships and post-redemption he’s going to be like that annoying, overbearing Uncle who tries to be cool and annoys you but ya don’t hate him. Another thing I wanted to go over is their obsessions. I wanna say the halfas all have dual obsessions bc it fits nicely with the half-and-half concept. Danny is protection and space. Ellie is freedom and family. Vlad is power and love. If I include Dark Danny he’ll be power and destruction and a reformed version would have control and safety.
As for his rouge gallery? Danny is able to help them find healthier outlets for their obsessions so they've become less of an issue. Now they kind of just act like Danny's annoying friends and/or extended family. The ones who were straight-up evil though are on indefinite time out in ghost prison though (e.g. Spectra and Freakshow). The gang still comes to visit him and Ellie from time to time though and he regularly sees them when he goes back to the realms for prince duties and stuff.
What’s up with Amity?
So after he turns 18, Danny decides to tell his parents about being Phantom. He’s legally an adult now and has been working toward getting emancipated anyways so he might as well. They took it like how I imagine slightly homophobic parents would react to learning their child was lgbt (side note: the Fentons are pro-lgbt. When Danny told them he was bi Jack said “Me too son!”, happy to have something to bond over). He tells them about the portal and becoming Phantom. They believe him and they are devastated and guilty.
In the next few weeks, they get into a couple arguments over them wanting to “fix” his ghost half. He blows up and tells them that by doing that they’d end up killing him and that Phantom is a part of who he is and they’ll just have to accept that. That night Danny leaves and with help from Sam stays in an apartment with Jazz near her college. He takes a two-year gap to get a handle of Infinite Realms and GIW stuff, plus doing a few small jobs to save up some money. Within that time the GIW gets taken down and the Fentons reach out bc their love for their children is stronger than their dislike of ghosts. Their relationship is still strained but getting better.
Dani also gets de-aged during that time and Danny decides to take care of her (partly for healing purposes and partly cause he wants to). His friends help forge documentation for her and he fights with Vlad over custody but ultimately wins and makes him pay child support. He’s saved up enough money and with a little help from Sam and Vlad gets an apartment in Gotham. He got a scholarship and is doing mostly online classes at Gotham University. He’s currently working part-time (I have not decided as what but I’m leaning toward mechanic). Vlad paid to have him enroll Ellie in Gotham Academy so she wouldn’t have to go to public school and Danny allowed it since it’d get her a better education. Ellie is going to start first grade in about 3 months since they moved to Gotham in June. (Just for reference, Damian is currently 12 and in seventh grade since I've decided not to move him up.)
Everyone in Amity knows about the discord between the Fenton's before Danny leaves. They don't necessarily know about Phantom though. Everyone kind of assumes Danny came out, fought with his parents then left. When some of them find out about Ellie another rumor circulates she was the topic of the fight. Regardless, the Fenton drama is kinda an open secret and most people sympathize with Danny. Whenever he comes back to town to visit a lot of people are really nice to him and Ellie, which he thought was weird until he learned what people thought was going on. Now he just takes advantage of their misunderstandings.
What's up with the GIW?
The GIW manages to get a hold of Ellie after Danny leaves Amity. When Vlad and Danny +Team Phantom find out they team up to rescue her. Danny also recruits people that he's met during his time away. For this mission, he recruits Constantine and Captain Marvel/Shazam. When the Fentons find out they want in too, almost as an apology gesture. They no longer want to try and "fix" Danny and are okay with Ellie's existence. They view her like family and want to help out. A lot of their views are still prejudiced but they're getting better, however, that's not the only thing straining their relationship. This is a step in the right direction though.
So they go in and infiltrate first in order to get Ellie out. Then they destroy the facilities behind them as they leave. Constantine and Captain Marvel then go back to the JL to work on getting to Anti-Ecto Acts repealed, something that is still in progress during the beginning of this fic. That's why they are gonna lay low while they’re in Gotham. The GIW attempted to experiment on Ellie while they had her but the containment unit they used destabilized her ectoplasm. She retains all her memory but is mentally and physically de-aged. Frostbite assesses her and says she needs to get extra ecto and to be near another halfa aura to help develop and stabilize her own systems. That leads to Vlad and Danny fighting over custody before Danny inevitably beats Vlad into the ground and walks away with custody and child support.
I think a full reveal about identities will happen after Danny gets confirmation that his existence is no longer illegal. It'll probably be after Jason asks him out but before he accepts because he wants Jason to know what he's getting into. Jason will probably be shocked but accept it relatively quickly. I haven't decided yet if I want him to live a mortal life with them and then die (either to move on or become a full ghost) or if I want him to be basically immortal like them and give him a position in the court.

While you are digging into batfam lore, could you perhaps help explain what the batkids' legal names all are? Fanfiction has messed me all up. Did any of them actually legally take Wayne as their last name? I see it most often with Tim (i.e. Timothy Drake-Wayne) and Cass (i.e. Cassandra Wayne) but I haven't read any comics that I recall that actually called them that.
Sure! A quick rundown of who's actually part of the Wayne family:
Wayne family: Dick, Jason, Tim, and Cass were all legally adopted at one point or another in the post-Crisis universe (post-reboot is....complicated. Dick, Jason, and Tim are all once again adopted after a long series of retcons; Cass's status is still unknown). Damian is Bruce's biological son.
NOT Wayne family: Barbara Gordon, Stephanie Brown, Helena Bertinelli, any members of the Fox family (Luke, Tam, Tiffany, Jace, etc), Harper Row, etc.
Duke is a complicated case; he was Bruce's temporary foster son for a year before moving in with his cousin Jay, who now has custody of him. He's...sort of considered Wayne family, in that at least Jason and Tim consider him to be sort of their brother, but he wasn't adopted and no longer lives with Bruce.
Other: Kate and Bette Kane, who are Bruce's cousins and part of the Kane family.
As for legal last names and who actually calls themselves Waynes:
Damian's legal last name is Wayne. The al Ghuls tend to call him "Damian al Ghul" when he's with them, but legally his last name is Wayne; it's also the name Damian goes by UNLESS he's specifically attempting to leverage the al Ghul name amongst his family or the League of Assassins.
Dick continues to go by and think of himself as "Richard John Grayson" even after being adopted, though he explicitly calls himself Bruce's adopted son in several arcs after his adoption happens. You can take your pick of reasons why this might be (and there's quite a few to choose from, mostly connected to Dick's love for his bio parents and already being an established adult when Bruce adopted him), but Grayson was and remains his legal last name.
Jason canonically remained "Jason Peter Todd" after his adoption, per his death certificate:
Tumblr media
Jason's death certificate, naming him as "Jason Peter Todd." -Batman Annual #25 (2006)
He was also "Jason Todd" to the general public; it's what people call him when they talk about him both before and after his death. The Red Hood and the Outlaws Rebirth comic (specifically RHATO #33) confirms that this is the case in the post-Flashpoint universe as well. However, there's a pretty reasonable canon foundation to assume that had Jason's adoption not happened in the 80s and had writers not wanted to complicate things, he probably would have chosen to hyphenate and become Jason Todd-Wayne, based largely on a) Jason's relationship with Willis Todd and b) Bruce and Jason's relationship before his death.
We simply don't know what Cass did. Cass was adopted off-panel in the vague period in between Batman RIP and Final Crisis, but Bruce's death threw everything up into the air; Cass was then promptly put on a bus and shipped out to Hong Kong for the duration of the Reborn era, and since she shows up in a grand total of 8 comics during that time we just don't get enough information to make a judgement call about her last name. Her two appearances in Tim's Red Robin book still call her Cassandra Cain, but it's unclear whether Fabian Nicieza, the writer, even knew her adoption had happened:
Tumblr media
"Cassandra Cain, former Batgirl, remains one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet..." /// "Cassandra Cain, aka The Black Bat, Hong Kong operative for Batman, Inc." -Red Robin #17 & #25
Since Cass never had much of a public identity to speak of in the first place (and for a long time didn't even want one), it's super ambiguous what her legal status is and what last name she holds post-adoption. It's pretty reasonable to assume she becomes Cassandra Wayne, though, and it's also my personal preference. Though her relationship with David Cain is complicated, she doesn't hold much attachment to him as a father; likewise, there's really no reason for her not to take on the Wayne name given her attachment to Bruce.
Tim is the complicated one here, mostly because his adoption was such A Production™. Tim was formally adopted about a year in-universe after the events of Identity Crisis (when Tim’s dad was killed by Captain Boomerang). The adoption was pretty high-profile; Tim and Bruce even sat for an interview about it:
Tumblr media
From 2007-2011, he's called Tim Drake and Tim Wayne (and occasionally Tim Drake-Wayne) pretty interchangably depending on the writer and situation. His legal name is probably Tim Drake-Wayne, though it's actually ambiguous. He tends to go by Tim Wayne in public while usually referring to himself as Tim Drake in private:
Tumblr media
"And by the way, it's Wayne when I want a favor or a table at Bartese, and it's Drake when I look in the mirror." -Red Robin #15
Tumblr media
"A question for Mr. Wayne--" /// "Reporting live from the reopening of the Newton Community Gym where Tim Wayne is about to address the crowd." -Red Robin #14 and 15
Post-Flashpoint, that adoption was erased and Bruce and Tim’s relationship was very strained; in the Rebirth era, his adoption was implied to be canon again in both Tynion’s Detective Comics run and King's Batman run, but we didn’t get confirmation until Infinite Frontier and Urban Legends, where Tim is once again explicitly adopted and occasionally called Tim Wayne, though he still mostly goes by and is referred to as Tim Drake:
Tumblr media
"But just to be clear--we're not splitting the bill, Tim Wayne." -Urban Legends #4
Tumblr media
"...and then Mr. Wayne just adopted you? Awful generous of him." -Urban Legends #4
Tim is also the only one regularly referred to in public as "Bruce's adopted son." Most of the time they're referred to as "Bruce Wayne's wards," so whether the adoptions are public knowledge or not is questionable, but their status as his wards and foster kids is not. Though they largely never lived in the Manor at the same time, they've all attended various public functions as Bruce's kids and acted on Bruce's behalf in various capacities while in the public eye.
tl;dr Tim is canonically the only one who takes the last name "Wayne" upon being adopted; he generally continues to refer to himself as Tim Drake, but canon calls him "Tim Drake," "Tim Drake-Wayne," and "Tim Wayne" pretty interchangably afterwards. Dick doesn't change his name and canonically Jason didn't either, though you could make a case that he might have hyphenated had his adoption been written in the modern era. We don't see Cass enough after her adoption to know either way; however, her existing canon relationships with Bruce and her biological family heavily support and/or imply that she probably became Cassandra Wayne.

Some of my Thoughts About Batman: The Animated Series as Someone Who Knows Very Little About Batman Lore (PART 1)
(This is just the first three episodes because it's late and I'm tired and I'd like to go to bed now lol)
•Bangin intro has me very hyped
•Police blimps
•"No one is taking a vigilante force onto my streets." Commissioner Gordon.. Wtf do you think Batman is-? Do you know who Batman is at this point in the series?
•Gotham citizens have a hard time telling the difference between an emo and an actual anthropomorphic bat despite the fact that they look nothing alike
•ALFRED IS HERE AND THAT MAKES ME HAPPY BECAUSE HE'S REALLY COOL •HE'S A SARCASTIC KING AND I LOVE HIM •We have the same sense of humor frfr
•Batman really likes using smoke bombs
•From reading the episode descriptions, and from watching this first episode, it seems like a lot of these villains are just drug addicts- •Drug addicts who really like bats, in this case
•The anthropomorphic bat was a doctor's fursona all along •There's a ridiculous amount of furries in Gotham
•They really like breaking windows. This is only the first episode and like.. Three windows have been broken already
•Christmas tree rockets
•ROBIN SPOTTED •WHICH ROBIN IS THIS •I KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF 'EM •Whichever Robin it is has sass, but I think all of them do •"Well ba-humbug to you too 😒" - Robin •THEY'RE WATCHING MOVIES AND EATING DINNER TOGETHER ON CHRISTMAS THIS IS A CUTE FAMILY MOMENT ASJSHAHSJAK •Unfortunately the Joker is here to mess that up tho T-T
•"Looks like I'll have to teach daddy some manners.." Uhhh, Joker..? 💀
•Look at this lovely father & son Christmas bonding, saving people and getting shot at with canons 💕
•I feel like the Joker having turrets shaped like him is really on brand somehow, despite knowing little to nothing about the Joker's said brand
•BETTY BOOP? •BETTY BOOP IS GOING TO MURDER US ALL
•Batman just has a freaking baseball bat 😭🖐 •"They don't call you Bat-man for nothing! 😀" - Robin
•According to the five minutes of research I just did, I think this Robin is Dick Grayson which is, according to the longer then five minutes of research I did last night, the OG (AKA the first) Robin.. So before Bruce's orphan addiction fully formed, I suppose?
•What did Bruce do to you, doctor guy- •This doctor is, like, really passive aggressive ;-; •Also kind of rude of him to just spout nonsense about Bruce's father and Bruce's father's death as if that wasn't an incredibly traumatizing experience for Bruce lmao •BRUCE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TIME TO BE DEPRESSED ABOUT IT BECAUSE SCARECROW IS HERE AND HE HAS A GUN- •The villains in this series are kinda obsessed with guns just as much as they're obsessed with drugs
•So Scarecrow takes the "Scare" part of his name literally and makes people hallucinate their fears? •Damn Bruce, dealing with some trauma right now?? 😭😭 I feel like a lot of characters with parent problems (whether those parents are dead or not) have visions and dreams of their parents being like "you suck lmao" to them
•Commissioner Gordon does, in fact know who Batman is right now, so wtf was he talking about earlier with the whole "no vigilantes" thing -_-
•yeah I'd probably call someone a lunatic if they kidnapped people and performed human experimentation too, scarecrow
•Guys I think Bruce needs to go to therapy (again? Has he already been before?) because he's having- like- a panic attack over this Scarecrow guy and his parents and all that.. •I mean my mans hands are SHAKING and his visions going all blurry •YEAH YOU TELL HIM ALFRED, GIVE HIM THOSE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS AND FEED HIM SOUP ALL RIGHT
•Bruce literally can not catch a break in this episode he went from having panic attacks because of the fear toxin to just.. Getting beat up by random, also fear gassed people 😔
•They like blimps a lot
•Just broke another window
•Tiny plane that looks like it's made out of cardboard
•They also like explosions a lot
•Why's this Jonathan Crane guy so scared of bats •He also has elf ears lol
•Thomas and Martha Wayne? Bruce's parents names acquired
•(This version of)Bruce looks stupid in sunglasses
