Fictober23 Prompt: 17 - "I never said it would be easy."

A/N: I saw a post with a comment that Dan chronological wise is ten years old according to a wiki, I haven't seen it myself but I decided to run with it for this anyway.

It was supposed to be a normal morning but that got quickly interrupted by a long drawn out shout of 'Bruce' and a white and black blur suddenly flying though their ceiling right at Bruce. Two out of four present bat-kids instantly sprang up from their chairs into defense positions and with drawn weapons. The other two only arched an eyebrow before turning their attention back to their breakfast with a suppressed laugh, they had seen that black and white blur often enough during their times as Robin.

Damian glared at his older brothers as he stood with drawn throwing knives while Tim after a second of realization sighed, righten his chair from the ground and sat only slightly embarrassed at how Dick and Jason laughed.

Hovering above their breakfast table with his hands on Bruce's shoulder was now Phantom also known as Danny Nightingale, looking completely frazzled. The source of the yell as well as white and black blur from seconds ago.

"Bruce! I need your help! Please! I can't ask Jazz because she is busy and I sure as hell won't ask Trenchcoat. I don't think Supes can handle them and you're like the only one else I could think of to ask! Bruce, please!"

None of the bat kids really knew how long exactly Bruce had known Phantom. The man had only recently admitted to personally knowing the Ghost Hero when Nightwing had caught Phantom collapsing onto Batman and de-transforming and Batman handling it like that hadn't been the first time. They only knew that he had been an unofficial member of Justice League Dark and was the one that helped Jason with his Pit Madness as well as came to visit every now and then as Danny. What they had learned additionally from Alfred was that Phantom was the adopted son of Alfred's old friend and that when Bruce had been younger, he often came to visit or to hang out with them to escape his own family drama.

The bat-kids had figured out that way that Bruce and Danny were probably something akin to childhood friends that both also worked in the hero buisness.

Either way no one was in danger and so they watched on with curiosity as to what Phantom wanted. So far the Ghost Hero was still rambling on and on about something he couldn't entrust to anyone other than Bruce, while their father was leisurely taking a sip from his coffee completely pokerfaced like he was used to the other man rambling at him like that.

"Danny." Bruce finally cut in as the other was about to restart his entire plea for help. "World ending or personal."

The white haired man blinked as he finally floated to the side and let his reformed feet touch the ground. "Both? Sort of?"

Bruce grunted, the universal sigh for the other man to elaborate and the children payed attention interested on what was going on.

"I have a diplomatic meeting with the Tempest Dimension. One of their Demon Lords discovered that interdimensional travel is actually possible by having created a portal when he tried to teleport somewhere in their Dimension. I can't take Dani and Dan with me for this, the last time I allowed them to accompany me they nearly caused a dimensional war. Clockwork doesn't want to watch them, Jazz is to busy trying her newest psychological tortur- I mean therapy on Joker and I can't make the fruitloop watch them since both Dan and Dani swore they would wreck havoc if I leave them with him during football season."

Bruce arched an eyebrow and Danny pinched the bridge of his nose. "Yea I know, but last time Trenchcoat watched them he nearly sold his soul again to never ever babysit them again. And Clark is too nice to watch them, they will use it against him."

Bruce hummed. "How old are they now?"

"Five and ten body wise since the assimilation process with their bodies finished a couple years ago. They should start normal aging soon."

The bat-kids exchanged confused, disturbed and partially horrified looks at what the two men were talking about. There were so many questions they had. They were wondering if they could make Bruce talk about his childhood and get some information about Phantom that way. Tim had attempted researching him once and barely found anything besides some disturbing information about a haunted tourist town called Amity Park that was Phantom's territory.

"Bruce! Please! They have a dragon with a human body in that dimension! I just know that Dan or Dani will attempt to fight him!" Suddenly an idea popped in Dicks head and exchanged a glance with his siblings, checking if they had similar thoughts.

"We could watch them!" Dick then piped up, this was their chance to find out more about Phantom and his relationship with their dad.

Wide green eyes blinked at Dick and for a moment he felt like he had made a grave mistake, especially as he noticed Jason was sneaking away now like he decided he did not want to be part of any of this. Which is fair but come on, this was their chance.

"Are you sure?" Phantom questioned him carefully, side eyeing Bruce who was still calmly sipping his coffee and gave phantom a slight nod.

"You said five and ten, right? How bad can it be watching kids their age! They can even hang out with me and Dami!"

"Do not involve me-" Damian's complaint was shushed by Tim stuffing a pancake in the others mouth, earning him a death glare from their youngest but it was good to know that at least one of them was on his side with this plan.

This time Danny exchanged a full on look with their father, it appeared like they were silently talking. Something Dick doesn't really remember Bruce doing with anyone in the way he saw it right now.

"Well if you say so…" Phantom slowly agreed before reaching with his hand into a green portal pulling out a heavy looking bag. "This is the medicine box. If either of them look the slightest bit melty use the syringes in here. That's ecto-dejecto and basically ghost medicine for them. Though for emergencies there is a portal amulet that leads right to Frostbite."

The bat-kids looked stunned at what Danny was holding up before putting it back into the medical box and pulling out a silver green thermos front he bag. "If Dan misbehaves in any way or form use this to put him in time out. Just point the open Thermos in his direction and press the button down here. Pressing the button again will release him, but if he misbehaves to the point of having to use the thermos you can leave him in there until I pick them up again."

They knew that Phantom wasn't completely human but was that normal parenting? Hadn't they seen him use that thermos on enemies of the JLD before? And he was using it to discipline his kids?

"They know better than to overshadow anyone to get their will but in case one of them does, these bracelets should keep you safe from it. Otherwise call Bruce, he is one of the four and a half adults they listen to too."

"Is all of that really necessary? I am just babysitting them right?" Dick asked, still a bit stunned as Phantom handed him the bag.

"Yes. I never said it would be easy." The man only answered before opening another portal and sticking his head through for a brief moment.

A little girl of five hopped out of it a second later looking like a perfect copy of Danny Nightingale's human form, though what was more shocking was the hulk of a man with flaming hair coming through the portal growling and snarling at them as the grown man stood behind the girl with crossed arms. From the corner of his eyes Dick saw Phantom pinching the bridge of his nose. Before he floated over to the tall man and quite frankly pinched and pulled on that man's ear.

"Dan. Human-form now."

The man continued to growl and snarl for a moment with blazing red eyes before two white circles formed around his middle. A transformation they had seen a couple of times before from Phantom after Bruce had admitted to knowing him personally and introduced him as Danny.

Instead of the hulking beast of a man there was now a ten years old boy that looked surprisingly similar to Damian just lighter skinned and blue eyed. The boy still growled at them with his arms crossed while the little girl giggled. Damian was looking at the two with narrowed eyes before he turned his stare on Bruce.

"This is Dani and Dan." Danny introduced the two kids and Dick heard Tim mutter something about unoriginality when it came to naming. But before anyone else could comment on anything or even greet the kids an eyeball appeared out of thin air. The ghost hero and his kids looked at it for a moment before the man sighed dismissing it with a wave of his hand.

"I have to go now! Dani, Dan behave and play nice. If anything goes wrong Bruce has my emergency summoning pendant!" A second later Phantom disappeared through the portal the kids had come in, the little girl, Dani, gleefully shouting a quick "Bye mom!" Before the portal closed.

There was a moment of silence before Damian decided to break it. "Father, I believe there is something you have failed to inform us about."

"And that would be?"

"The existence of blood related siblings you have sired with Phantom."

Very true! Actually-Alfred straight up says it-true!

This scene is when Dick was accepted by Batman to become robin.

I was actually going to use this for another Dick and Alfred post but let me just drop it here that Dick cares about Alfred so much!!

Like this boy is the sweetest, most caring person ever. He asks the butler if it's okay for him to become robin-who does that?! Who would think of doing that?! He's the most considerate, softest baby ever! The tiny, nervous, shy smile on his face in the second panel <33333

Here's the answer: "And while he most certainly became a man...I don't think he ever became an adult."

But Alfred says it twice!

"But Alfred always used to say Bruce would have self-destructed if he hadn't met me and learned some responsibility."

That's why I love Bruce and Dick's relationship so much. They are so codependent on each other. While Bruce saved Dick (not from being angry. He wasn't an angry robin, istg.), Bruce also would have died without Dick.

Before Bruce met Dick, he was on a one way track to his own ending. He was reckless, didn't take precautions, and was on the verge of being consumed by the darkness of which he was fighting.

At this time, a boy came along that shined light down upon him (literally because of the circus stage lights lol) and he was taken by him instantly.

With a new partner-a child-by his side Bruce was forced to take precautions, learn how to operate as a human being, and was just happy to have someone who bright and cheerful. He used Dick as an emotional crutch from losing his mind.

"Still, the addition of Dick Grayson into the Master's crusade has made a difference in him."

"I do believe I saw him smile. There have even been occasions in the pantry when I could just discern the muffled sounds of laughter echoing up from the dreadful cavern beneath the manor."

There are so many occasions where Alfred talks about how extraordinarily important Dick is to Bruce.

Dick raised Bruce.

To borrow a lyric line that explains this:

"Take a broken man right in my hands And then put back all his parts"

Dick's "i can fix him" issues which are a massive part of his relationship with Deathstroke come from acting as a child parent to Bruce.

But the greatest part?

He still is.

Again and again and again. Dick is the only person Bruce relies on. He never tells anyone his secrets or worries unless that person is Dick. And often he bears the brunt of the work by his family. Both Tim and Jason have gotten angry at him for taking Bruce's side or supporting Bruce but the thing is, he's the only one who can next to Alfred. Tim has accused and praised him of being too much like Batman sometimes but when you raise a kid (adult-sized) I think you're bound to forgive them while also admonishing them for their mistakes.

They also use Dick as the unofficial spokesperson to talk to Bruce

"Hey. Tim told me about Zur. Are you alright?"

Side note: Tim tried talking to Bruce earlier but Bruce kept ignoring his concerns.

For each robin, Dick acts as the emotional go between Bruce and them.

Another reason why Dick and Tim are so close is because Dick acted like the parent during Tim's robin era. It wasn't until recent comics that they had Bruce actually even caring about Tim.

Dick the fixer upper. Always fixing everyone's family issues. With each other or with Bruce.

There's a comic panel where Bruce says "Dick is the glue that holds the family together."

Dick is literally the light of his life. Without him Bruce would've lost it. It was the perfect combination of Dick's cheerful personality, strong ethics, and tragic backstory that caused Bruce to take him in and it was these same traits that helped him grow. Because Dick's distinguishable trait is that he humanizes people. And Dick humanized and raised Bruce.

All of the Wayne kids’ favorite Leaguers: True and Real and Accurate

Dick: Wonder Woman! Bear with me. Please. I think Superman was his favorite BEFORE he met Clark. Once he learned how big of a dork he was, the magic was sort of lost, doubly so when Clark became his unofficial stepdad. Diana? She stayed cool. Not to mention that in his Robin days, she often humored whatever hare-brained impulses he’d get. Please picture Batman’s bewildered expression when he finds Dick dangling from the Watchtower light fixture he specifically designed to be impossible for him to reach. Diana just, -shrug- “He said please.” You threw him Diana. You threw that child. She’d probably still throw him if he asked nicely, hell, she’d probably do it even before he has to ask. It’s ‘Boy Wonder’, not ‘Boy Bat’.

Jason: Black Canary. ‘Wonder Woman is Jason’s fav’ believers PLEASE hear me out. I think that Diana is Jason’s favorite in a ‘celebrity crush’ way, but Dinah is Jason’s favorite in a ‘cool aunt’ way. He met her unofficially at the Watchtower, but actually started hanging out with her thanks to Roy. They both like motorcycles and kicking ass, plus Young Justice having Canary as a therapist melds well with my vision of her helping Jason heal. And I think she’s used to yelling at Bruce on Oliver’s behalf, so it’s no big to do it on Jason’s too.

Tim: The Flash! If Dinah is the cool aunt, Barry is the cool uncle. Guy that shows up at the function with all the best snacks. He might eat half of them himself but damn if he didn’t bring them. In all seriousness, Tim saw pretty great merit in knowing a forensics guy that he can basically talk to anytime he’s stumped with a case without having to go through the “sorry to wake you” song and dance. Barry occasionally gets unhinged texts that are in the vein of “hey can you go about ten minutes back in time and tell past me about _____”. They’re usually pretty low stakes but sometimes there’s just a “got stabbed, do-over?” jumpscare sprinkled in. Bruce will never ever get shit from Barry about kid troubles. That man is a saint in Flash’s eyes.

Cass: Captain Marvel. She didn’t like him at all during their first meeting. For a person that’s good at reading body language, I imagine that seeing genuinely childish behavior on a grown man would be giving some crazy mixed signals. Once she learns that his powers are magic in origin rather than being alien or meta, her mind opens up a little more to the possibility that his exterior appearance might not be indicative of his actual identity. Cass guesses his age by their next proper meeting and makes it her business to keep an eye on him, always asking Bruce about him after he returns from League missions. Your honor, that 7’5” brick wall Champion of Magic is actually just Cass’ little buddy. She’s gonna get him some ice cream or something.

Steph: Green Lantern. Hal and Barry are like uncles, except if Barry is the cool one, Hal is the cringe one. Lucky for Hal, being a boyfailure is a good way to amuse Steph. Those two are gonna spend hours arguing with Bruce just for the hell of it, backing each other up on completely incorrect claims (Steph does it because it’s funny, Hal does it because he believes her). He does get bonus points for bringing her cool space snacks whenever he comes back from trips off-world. One of her favorite foods is a sort of hi-chew/gum thing from some other planet in Sector 2418 that doesn’t dissolve or lose its flavor, even after chewing it for days on end.

Damian: Aquaman. He’s a king. Like, an actual king. And he can communicate with fish. Arthur heard about Damian’s temper from the rest of the Leaguers and straight up does not believe it because every time he’s spoken to Damian, it’s been “hello your majesty can you introduce me to an octopus I have a few questions for it”. This one’s short. But I feel it speaks for itself.

Duke: Superman. Clark was NOT told about Signal taking up the day shift in Gotham until he was flying in to compare notes (read: flirt), with Bruce and met Duke when they both went to intercept a carjacking. Clark tries to be responsible like “I feel obligated to let you know that Batman doesn’t take kindly to metas in his city”, only for Duke to point at the big ol bat on his chest. After that, Duke usually intercepts Big Blue’s flight path anytime he comes into Gotham and the two just kind of hang out and shoot the shit while he does his patrol. Duke is also a little bit stoked to be regularly hanging out with The Superman, but even after the awe wears off, he can’t help but still think of Clark as just a cool, friendly guy. He gets someone to share the airspace with, Clark gets a bat he can stay in the sun with, it’s a win/win all around. Congrats Clark, you got one.

Do you know who from Bruce's kids actually lived at the Wayne manor at the same time? Fanon seems to have this idea that all of them live in the same house at the same and I'm curious if there's any truth to it

I will tell you this from the very start: "All the Batkids live in the same house <3" is 100% fanon and for all of comic history, we really only had one or two Batkids permanently living in the Wayne manor at the same exact time (kinda ironic considering how many rooms it has).

At the beginning it was just Bruce, Dick and Alfred living in it until Dick moved out to college and he has been living on his own or with the Titans ever since. Except for the period he was acting as Batman where he, Damian and Alfred lived in the Wayne Penthouse on top of the Wayne Foundation Building.

And of course when he left the nest, Jason took his place and lived with Bruce and Alfred until his death and obviously he's not going back to that house any time soon considering his circumstances.

Afterward it was just Bruce and Alfred for some years, since Tim was either living with his parents or in an all-boys boarding school for most of his Robin run until he got officially adopted and moved with Bruce at 17, but that didn't last long since he moved out and started living on his own when he became Red Robin, which even includes him living in a boat at one point.

Cassandra's situation is kinda weird. She lived with Barbara when she first came to Gotham and is currently still living with her along Stephanie, even though she has been adopted by Bruce for a while now. Maybe I'm missing an issue, but I personally can't recall any comic that established her as permanently living in the manor, aside from maybe Batgirl (2008), but even then it was such a brief period and Alfred constantly remarks about how she's almost never home, so I don't know if I should count it.

Lastly you have Damian, who like I said above, first lived with Dick and Alfred in a penthouse, but then later on moved to the manor with Bruce and Alfred when the N52 started and unofficially turned it into a zoo with all his animals. Then Duke came to live with them at one point, which would mean that he and Damian were the only Batkids that lived with each other in the manor at the same time (even though we strangely never saw them with each other.)

Now that didn't last long since DC can't help being DC and created a huge mess of Damian's character that basically had him out of Gotham for almost 5 years now while also killing Alfred, not to mention that Duke's mother is back as of this year, so I would assume that he's living with her now at their place?

So for the first time in more than 80 years, the manor is completely empty save for Bruce, but in other positive (?) news. We have an upcoming Batman and Robin book about Damian FINALLY returning to Gotham and working with Bruce again, so I think its safe to say that they would be living with each other when the book begins.

Propaganda Begins Here: Bruce cannot help but adopt children who he believes are in need of guidance. Dick Grayson was adopted after his parents died in a trapezing "accident", where Bruce legally adopts him as he felt empathy for the boy's loss and none of Dick's family wanted him (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/dick-grayson/4005-1691/).

As for Jason, Batman found him stealing tires off the Batmobile in order to sell for cash to survive on the streets after his druggie mother had died and criminal father had run away, taking him as his own as Jason had no where else to go after running away from Ma Gunn's school for troubled youths Bruce had placed him in (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/jason-todd/4005-6849/).

As for Tim Drake, Bruce adopted him after Tim's parents had been kidnapped and Batman had been unable to save them from being poisoned, his mother died and his father in a coma. Finally, Cassandra Cain was adopted after Batman saw she was able to overcome her demons, providing for her the fatherly loved she had always wanted (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/cassandra-cain/4005-65230/)

These are only Bruce Wayne's adopted children, he as an entire Bat Family which include Damian Wayne (his biological son) as the latest robin and other individuals who have taken up the mantle of the Bat or were/are part of his team at a young age who he has cared for such as Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and Stephanie Brown (Spoiler)”

Im pretty sure the batfam is seriously like one of the best known hero groups,

Old Batman and Robin comics were literally a foundational part of my childhood and then I grew up and found out that later Dick got like 8 siblings”

17. “Man can't deal with empty nest syndrome and cannot look past an orphan child without adopting them. He takes in Dick when Dick is 12 (he eventually does adopt Dick after Dick is already an adult), after being one of many people to witness Dick's parents die. After Dick went off to do his own thing he met Jason who was living on the streets after his Mom died. After Jason died, Tim shoved his way into Bruce's life saying that Bruce needed a partner in crime solving after Jason's death (Tim still had parents who were alive at this point, they did eventually die and was taken in by Bruce). Cassandra's circumstances I'm not fully clear on but she was raised by her bio dad to be a living weapon and she ran away (from my understanding at least) and Bruce took her in. Duke was taken in after his parents were hospitalized due to a Joker attack and were/are unlikely to recover. Bruce also mentors other children heroes including Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown, both are close to his kids and are sometimes seen as under his wing as well, but neither see him as a parent.”

I went a little too wild with the "whatever you like" bc I saw batgirl 2009 and blacked out. all of these fics are set during the dick!bats batgirl!steph robin!damian era and consist of some overlap of the three of them -- I know dick was not mentioned in this ask but he crept in there my apologies. at least two of these fics are exclusively steph & damian so I fulfilled some level of this request methinks. duke is not here I'm sorry but I can potentially try to find some of him and damian at a later date if you would like to send in another ask <3

6. Tim. If he was such a good Robin then DC wouldn't be trying to make "the best Robin" one of his personality traits instead of actually making him interesting. I like him just fine but objectively, he's boring compared to the others. Yes even with the insane moments. Yes even with his dynamic to Bruce and the Robin mantle. Whoever started the rumour that he's an industry plant was dead on and it drags him down.

5. Jason. Objectively a great Robin with a tragic end he didn't deserve. No real complaints he's only this low because the other four do it better.

4. Dick. The original. I understand why people would put him number one, there would be no Robin without him. He bounces between second and fourth for me but I do think the three people above him took the mantle and improved on it, similar to Wally West with the Flash. Still undeniably a great Robin.

3. Duke. Not an official Robin but he deserves a place here. The We Are Robin concept was good actually. Like all DC concepts it had potential to be great but they didn't give it the attention and writing it deserves. I do like Duke better as the Signal than as another Robin but in terms of taking Dick's legacy and doing something good with it, he's top 3.

2. Damian. His backstory sucks because no one read a Talia comic before coming up with his character since DC is full of clowns. BUT he's kind of the perfect next gen Robin. His dynamic with Dick is excellent, his suit is the only Robin suit to actually look cool and the way he shakes up the batfam is fun as hell. I hope he stays Robin for a long time and that someone is capable of reworking his backstory so it can keep it's key elements without turning his mom into an ooc evil racist mess.

Stephanie Brown. The girls that get it get it. There's never been a better Robin. They had to kill her off because she was too good and it made everyone else look bad in comparison. Best dynamic with Bruce. Best redesign of the costume. Best hair. Best character despite editorial sabotage. If DC wasn't filled with sexists Steph would have been THE Robin. But alas we live in a society, and only true intellectuals are left to pick up the scraps and see the masterpiece that could have been.

“ I may have not been born a fighter, Damian, but I was crafted by the burn of my survival. A good part of my skill comes from practice. The rest? From the attempts of destruction to my soul” Dick seethed in between teeth.

Damian tensed up at the harsh tone Dick had. Jason’s eyes widened, he hadn’t heard Dick be so cold in years. It reminded him of the fights between Bruce and Dick when he first got here. Tim’s back straightened, knowing that side of Dick very well because of his arrival after Jason’s death, he knew Dick had a darkness within him that only one person was able to soothe. Bruce felt his heart stop. “He hasn’t been like that in a long time…” he said stiff as a board. Alfred placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, “she is here, master Bruce….”

I just read a fic where Tim gets a tattoo with Connor (Cute fic, called Don't You Worry Your Pretty Little Mind by timdrakewayne on AO3, go read it) and I'm getting my first tattoo soon (appointment already made, July 10th, can't wait), so now I'm making headcanons of what the batfam would get if they got tattoos, let's go!

All of the kids don't ask Bruce before they get their tattoos, but when he finds out he's like, "Whatever, don't let a villain see it."

⚠️⚠️!!!TW: Mention of self harm!!!⚠️⚠️

All Robin's- All of the Robin's (past and present, duh, Damian gets his when he's older) go in together and get their personal Robin symbols over the first scar they got while being Robin, it a little something that makes them feel good, and closer together

Bruce- I can't decide on just one for him, so he gets two. One is the outline of Gotham, maybe like across his back (read it in a fic once a long time ago, love the idea, it's very Bruce). Two is some sort of symbol or something that represents all his kids (even his unofficial kids, like Steph, Barbara, and Duke (remember that Duke is his foster kid) because he counts them as his) on his chest over his heart, it could be a little family tree with all of their enitials (idk if that's spelled right), it could be all of their super hero symbols (but those change so maybe not that), or literally anything, he adds to it everytime he gets a new kid (most nearly cry, or do cry, when they first see this)

Dick- I think Dick would get a tattoo to remind him of his parents or the circus, but also keep it small, so like maybe his parents names in a heart, the outline of like a circus tent, idk those are the greatest ideas, but something like that, it would either be on his wrists or on his chest over his heart

Jason- despite going through a huge rebellious thing, Jason doesn't get his tattoo until he's closer with the family again, I think it would be a quote from a book on his forearm, maybe something about family being there, or family not always being about blood, to both remind himself that he's not alone anymore, and that while his biological mom was a shitty person who sold him to the joker, the person he counts as his real mom loved him unconditionally despite her own flaws.

Tim- In the fanfic I read Tim gets a tattoo on his thigh of the Superboy symbol in the Robin colors. While I love that idea I'mma project onto Timmy boy here and personal headcanons so he also gets multiple tattoos (four to be exact). Tim is the tattoo addict of the family, so he has for and plans to get more, much to the surprise of everyone (most expected it to be Jason, maybe even Dick, but not Tim) . One, the same one I just described from the fic (loved it too much to leave it out). Two, a semi colon on his left wrist covering self harm scars (for those who may not know the semi colon is used when an author could have ended the sentence but continued it instead, when people get a semi colon tattooed on themselves it means that they could have/wanted/tried to end their lives, but continued living instead), the semi colon just plain black because just that alone sent a big message. Tattoo number three is a quote from "In Deeper Waters" on his right wrist (also covering self harm scars, not important but I headcanon Tim as ambidextrous like me) and it's "The world isn't kind, but it doesn't mean I can't be." Tim is someone who has been beat down by an unkind world over and over again, but still strives to be kind to others (and sees the same thing happen to those he loves). And last but not least is a matching tattoo he gets with Steph. He's planning on getting a matching tattoo with Bernard soon, but they're still planning on what it will be (they are willing to take ideas from the fam)

Damian- When he's older he either chooses to not get a tattoo or gets one of the Wayne family crest on his wrist to show his loyalty to the whole family. Not much to say about him with tattoos, sorry

Duke- He doesn't get a tattoo, idk why, I just feel like he's not all that interested in them, and if he does want one he's taking 100000 years to figure out what tattoo he wants because he knows this is a forever type thing and that is what's making it hard for him to decide (family tells him to take his time, he doesn't even have to get one, but if he decides to get one they'll gladly take him to get it)

Cass- She didn't want a big one, but she wanted it to be meaningful. She ended up getting a small pair of black ballet shoes tattooed on her ankle. Dancing is something that she loves dearly, and it is also something she drags her whole family to do with her a lot (it doesn't take much to convince them they all love dancing with her), so it represents something that she loves to do and feels at peace doing, and it represents times where she's bonded with her family and has come closer to them, she loves it

Steph- I mentioned a matching tattoo with Tim, she got it with him some point after their breakup for both of them to show each other that even though they broke up that their friendship will remain just as strong as before, lasting forever just like the tattoo. I think they got it on their forearms, but I can't decide what it is, maybe a quote, maybe one like Tim and Connor's where they get each others symbols in their respective colors, maybe something they both love, maybe something unique and only they will understand, maybe those cheesy best friend tattoos, you'll decide for me. That was her first tattoo, she has a second one on her thigh and it's a quote that Bruce himself said to her about her father not defining who she is in any way (Bruce cried when he found out about this one, though he tried to hide it)

Barbara- First she made a whole power point presentation, with Tim's help, for her dad to convince him to let her get a tattoo (she's an adult and can just get it without his permission, but she wanted his approval on it), which he finally said yes too, like Dick and Cass she wants to get something small but meaningful. She gets it on her collar bone, and it's a quote about being able to rely on those around to help you and make you stronger, something like that, honestly she's the hardest to decide for me

BONUS:

Selena Freaking Kyle: When she marries Bruce (they get married in my world, hush) she gets a tattoo similar to Bruce's with something to symbolize all the kids, tattooed on her ribs, because those are her Kittens and she would kill and die for them. They don't find out until they all have a beach day and she wears a swim suit top and they see it they all nearly cry. She also has other tattoos that I'm too lazy to specify now :)

Everytime I envision Jason interacting with drug use, I get the impression that he just... doesn’t.

Like yeah, he smokes, but he’s 19 and it’s legal, so that’s fine. He doesn’t care if Dick drinks, same with anyone he knows who’s over 21 as long as they’re safe about it.

But one time he walks in on Tim and Connor smoking weed and he just. Calmly walks over and plucks the joint out of Tim’s hand. They’re both thinking something like oh he probably wants a hit, but Jason just goes, opens the window, and chucks it out. Then he holds out his hand for the rest of it, and Connor hands it over because why hasn’t he spoken why is he so calm. Jason then proceeds to give them the longest lecture of their lives about how using weed isn’t a good coping strategy and if they’re stressed they should get therapy. And then he leaves to chuck the weed.

Once, when Damian was 11, he convinced Bruce to let him have a small glass of wine with his dinner on Christmas. Jason sees it next to his plate, takes it, and pours it down the sink. No glares, no yelling. Dinner then becomes an unofficial TED Talk as Jason educates them all--because he’s fucking smart, and when he lived with his parents he filled his head with everything he could learn about substances and addiction and recovery, and he was heartbroken when he tried to help his mom and she still used because he loved her and knew what to do and why wasn’t it enough?--on how Damian’s brain isn’t fully developed and alcohol could really fuck with him, and how no one there should be drinking before they’re 21 or preferably 25 because that’s when the brain stops developing.

Jason is fine with reasonable, safe, legal substance use, but he’ll freeze hell himself before he lets another family member die to it.

Can you imagine if the batbros got sent to our dimension?

Like, aside from the whole ‘jesus christ our lives have been recorded there is no privacy’ thing, how would they feel when they saw people’s thoughts on them?

How would Dick feel seeing the oldest siblings who look at him and said, he’s angry, and he deserves to be, and all the younger ones who look up to him and think, I wish I had him for a brother. The kids who imagined he was their family to get through tough times. The ones who asked ‘what would Dick Grayson do’ and decided to be kind.

How would Jason feel when he saw the hundreds who would go to war with Batman for him? The kids who weren’t what their parents envisioned, the ones who were used, the ones considered fuck-ups and troubled children, who yell that he deserved better? If he saw the kids who fought and fell and got back up because the Red Hood would do it too?

How would Tim feel about the gifted children, the neurodivergent ones who went so long without understanding why they were how they were, the ones whose parents never hit them so nothing was wrong, but it’d be nice if they ever even glanced at them? The people who look at him and say he worked so hard and he is valuable, who see.everything that he is and love him all the more for it? The people who will never stop trying because Tim Drake tried, and goddammit they would do him proud.

And Damian? How would he feel if he looked at everyone who was just a kid trying to survive? Who became whatever they had to only to find out later that it wasn’t what the world wanted from them? These people who fight for him to get chance after chance and cry, he deserves to be loved, not shunned for doing what he had to. The ones who love so fiercely and so loyally because Damian deserved a chance and so did these kids.

So Jason’s just died. Bruce is back in Gotham, he’s sad and grieving and Dick is in Bludhaven because he left right after the funeral. It’s hard. But Bruce Wayne has to go to a social event. So, with great difficulty, he gets dressed and goes out to a party with all of Gotham’s elite. He’s not being Brucie tonight, though. He doesn’t have energy for it. Instead, he’s just walking around. People who were there described him later as a shadow. If you weren’t looking at him, he just seemed to disappear into the darkness.

But then he hears someone talking about Jason. About that ‘street kid’. It’s a man who looks like he’d try to explain periods to a woman. Expression pleasant, as if he’s discussing the mayoral race, he talks about Jason like he was a piece of dirt on his shoe. He says that the kid was on borrowed time, anyway. That he didn’t deserve Bruce’s kindness. How kind Bruce was, really, for tolerating him.

And Bruce, of course, feels rage. But before he can go himself to fight this guy(and even if he wasn’t Batman, he’d win), there’s a loud shout. A child who looks like he’s ten(even though he’s thirteen) flies out of the crowd.

Bruce’s first thought is that it’s Jason. The black hair, the eyes, the way his face is creased with fury all remind him of his son when he was angry. But it’s not Jason, because Jason is dead, and even if he wasn’t he had about twice the muscle this kid did.

This is Tim Drake, child of Jack and Janet, heir to one of Gotham’s biggest fortunes. He has currently already broken the disrespectful man’s nose and knocked out a tooth. Though Bruce is tempted to let him keep going, he pulls the boy off, trapping him in a bear hug like he did when Jason lost control.

Tim is fighting him, practically spitting. His parents are nowhere to be seen.

“He deserves it!” Tim yells. Tears are running down his face. His eyes, Bruce realizes, are a puffy red that can only come from sleeplessness or crying, both for a long time. “He doesn’t know anything about Jason!”

An interesting thing to say, coming from someone who never even met the kid himself.

Bruce loosens his grip, putting his hands on Tim’s shoulders to coax him around to face him. He gets on one knee, looking into the kid’s eyes.

“Do you want to tell me what you knew about Jason?”

Tim’s eyes go wide with panic mixed with dwindling rage. He’s so tense Bruce is surprised he isn’s shaking. Really, Bruce would expect him to be running. But Tim takes a deep breath. He looks Bruce in the eyes.

“He had magic.”

Ice fills Bruce’s lungs, because jesus this kid knows. Not just the identities. He knows them. He knows Jason’s old belief, one held in mischevious grins and bloody knuckles. He knows them.

“I think we should have a conversation.”

How the Cookie Crumbles

To say his brothers fought would be an understatement: They warred. That. That was the better word. However, it was Dick who was the peacemaker among them. The mediator extraordinaire, translating all his brothers’ woes and misunderstandings into less doom-pending transgressions. But to say this unofficial, yet very necessary part he played was tasking was yet another understatement of unspeakable proportions. It was a FUCKING LOT.

“I swear to God, Drake. You and Brown are a special kind of stupid.”

“Shut up, Damian! It’s a good idea!” Tim grumbled in reply.

“Yeah! You’re just mad you didn’t think of it first!”

Dick’s face fell upon hearing the argument and considered turning the other way, but he’d learned the hard way that his lack of interference could result in bloodshed. Damian did have a history of stabbing Tim, and Robin had an impressive body count, according to Jason. I’d better make sure he doesn’t add two more.

“Well, fuck me and my entire life,” Dick droned in frustration. “What are you three bitching about now?”

“Damian keeps saying our idea is stupid,” Stephanie tattled.

“Yeah!” Tim added with crossed arms. “He says we lack the fortitude for good ideas!”

“You do!” the current robin exclaimed.

“Damian?”

The youngest batboy rolled his eyes and reasoned, “Listen, I know these two brain donors barely have two brain cells to rub between them—”

“That’s not the only thing they rub!” Jason called from the other room.

Damian again rolled his eyes in contempt and continued, “And I’ve accepted, as a member of this family, that everyone gets to act a little stupid from time to time. “Do I always have to be the responsible one?”

“Affirmative,” all four said with little thought.

“Okay then,” Dick sighed with reluctance. “Damian, I know you find it hard to accept the choices of others, but you need to understand that free choice and expression is about accepting that others may not make the same choices as you, and that’s okay. It’s the same as you choosing not to take my dating advice and ask Raven out because you’re afraid of rejection—”

“Shut up, Grayson! This isn’t about me!!!” Damian spat.

“Damian has the hots for Raven?” Jason teased. “You have good taste, Mighty Mouse. She got a great—”

“Don’t even finish that sentence, Todd!” Dick and Damian ordered in unison.

“I was gonna say personality,” Jason droned. “Get your minds out of the gutter. I mean for fuck’ sake.”

“Sure you were,” Tim replied with a glower.

“Yeah Tim, cause you never stare at her tits while you talk to her,” Jason added, throwing him doubly under the bus.

“Dude, are you trying to get me killed?” Tim said, shooting an elbow into his brother’s ribs as Damian and Stephanie both glared. Spurring Dick into a further mood for murder.

“My point being is, just because you don’t like other peoples’ ideas, doesn’t mean they’re stupid.”

“Tell them the idea, guys!” Jason urged, stirring the pot.

Stephanie and Tim looked at each other and nodded, as though they’d discovered the holy grail itself. “We’re gonna write a series of YA novels and sell them on the web!” Steph sang optimistically.

“Yeah, it’s a huge and diverse market,” Tim added.

“And with established characters, we’ll make a killing.”

Dick’s brow furrowed. “That sounds like fanfiction?”

“It sounds like utter bullshit,” Damian sneered, not single fuck given.

“It’s not bullshit,” Tim snapped. “YA novels make up a huge portion of the market. People love those things.”

“Then name one YA novel that has sold more than a manga in the last 10 years?”

Tim shrugged. “I can’t think of one at the top of my head, but there they definitely exist and sell.”

“Yeah, so does my fanfiction based on this family,” Jason added under his breath.

“What?” Everyone asked.

“Nothing. Continue.”

“So anyway, I told Damian it’s a foolproof plan.”

Dick rolled his eyes with a bit of doubt, but who was he to judge or discourage their creativity. I mean, he dropped out of college after all? “I’m not saying I believe it’s bulletproof, because frankly, nothing is. But I’m curious why you would consider telling Damian? I mean, he hates most things.”

“And Drake. I hate Drake.”

“We’re all very aware, Dami,” Dick drawled in annoyance. “But yeah, why would you tell him anything important to you? Especially that?”

“Well, we kinda needed a loan. I knew Bruce would undoubtedly say no and, well, Damian has money.”

“Because I make good business decisions.”

“I don’t know why I thought of asking you?”

“You didn’t, Jason told you to,” Stephanie confessed, recalling an earlier conversation.

“Jason, really?” Dick tsked.

“Hey, Damian does make good business decisions. Who do you think cleans and invests money? It’s certainly not Alfred.”

“Because Alfred would have nothing to do with your blood money, Jason. And Damian, I’m very disappointed in you!”

“Grayson, I don’t know what high horse you are riding on today, but you better come off it. Father told me if I wanted money, that I needed to earn it and that I should get a job. So I got one.”

“Laundering money for Red Hood’s criminal Enterprise is not a job!”

“Actually it is. Mighty Mouse made us an LLC and everything. I own several Wash & Folds, all legitimate! Thanks to Hell Spawn here! I’m actually considering making him a partner.”

“So will your LLC fund our YA Novels?”

“Oh fuck no!”

“Come on, Jay! We have a solid business plan,” Stephanie pleased.

“You’re business plan is a bunch of meaningless numbers written on the back of a napkin and poorly illustrated versions of us,” Damian said, holding up the napkin in question.

“Okay, so it’s not the final draft, but we’re working on it!” Tim said pointedly.

“Yeah, as tempting as this all sounds, I didn’t make my money making half baked business decisions,” Jason reasoned

“No, you made it by taking over Gotham’s drug trade,” Dick clarified with disapproval.

“Which was a solid business decision.”

“Why do I even talk to you?”

“I don’t know why I talk to any of you,” Damian scowled, arms crossed, grateful there was no shared genetics between him and his adoptive kin. “I don’t understand what father saw in any of you.

“I can’t answer that,” Jason replied. “However, I can tell you, from personal experience, what he saw in your mom.”

“Do you wanna die, Todd?”

“Do you wanna not have a job?” Jason wanted. “Also, been there done that. But hey, if I died twice then I’d have buffy status so don’t threaten me with a good time, kid.”

“On that note, I’m leaving,” Damian grimaced. “I have to meet Raven, anyway.”

“Oh,” Dick sang. “You have a date!”

“It’s not a date.”

“Bet you wish it was a date,” Stephanie teased. “Y’know, if you just stopped acting like a dick all the time, I bet she’d go out with you.”

“Shut up, Brown.”

“Oh no,” Dick smiled. “I know it’s hard to believe, but he’s nice to Raven.”

“Hey keep that shit up,” Jason added. “If you’re nice to her, she’d be nice to you!”

“I hate all of you,” Damian proclaimed and stormed away.

“Fuck you too! See you at work Monday! Jason called, earning a tiger middle finger.

“He might be an asshole, but he’s a good kid,” Jason nodded with a sense of pride, causing to Dick to silently scoff. “Still needs to get laid though.”

“Bruce is gonna be so pissed when he finds out you pulled Dami into your bullshit.”

“You’re using Raven’s pet name for him now?” Jason mocked. “And fucker’s gonna have to prove it first; there’s a reason I hired ‘Dami’ for that job.”

“Dude, fuck you; dig your grave,” Dick lamented. “And don’t come at me with one of your tired ass death jokes, they’re getting old.”

“Suit yourself,” the Outlaw glowered as silence set in.

“So Dick,” Tim dared sheepishly. “You, um, wanna invest in--”

“Absolutely not,” the elder hero replied.

Leaving Jason to chuckle. “And that’s the way the cookie crumbled.”

This question has kinda been at the back of my mind since your Young Justice post, but what's the deal with Robin?

So how it pretty much shakes out is that the canon Robins all exist in more or less the same order, but with a few extras in certain spot and more overlap between eras. Headverse!Bruce makes more of an effort to make sure his own obsessive tendencies don't adversely effect his wards, so pretty much any Robin would have another Robin they split the role with. Dick and Helena leaving initiated an unofficial "graduation" process from Robin to other roles, usually a bespoke identity of their own design

In order:

-Dick Grayson and Helena Bertinelli (later Nightwing and Huntress, with Dick briefly becoming Batman)

-Jason Todd (solo, his original death codified the practice of having at least two at once; later the new Red Hood)

-Tim Drake, Cass Cain, Steph Brown (Cass quickly split off as Batgirl, but maintained a close relationship with the others, even after Steph went back to operating as Spoiler and Tim's post-crisis days as the Black Ace Joker)

-Duke Thomas and Harper Row (later Lark and Bluebird)

-Damian Wayne and Carrie Kelley (Pushing the end of Bruce's tenure, Damian later becomes the new Outsider in honor of Alfred's Golden Age spy identity, Carrie serves a few different roles in the post-Crisis era alongside Jace and Ryan)

after that, no hard meta, since Carrie and Damian are with Bruce just as the Crisis occurs. Jace approaches the Robin situation differently, though Tam probably still pushes her way into the role, and pulling from the 666 timeline, Terry might actually get some play as Robin before becoming Batman, since Damian and Carrie at least would already know who he and Matt were.

As for the Robin who was on YJ, Dick and Helena would have mostly aged out of the role, so Jason's the actual Robin in the image, but the mask isn't a "Red Hood" helmet in-universe by that point, just an out of universe visual joke to point in that direction. Jace's helmet probably survived the explosion that killed him and he wore it with Arthur Fleck's old nom de guerre to fuck with Bruce and any Gotham rogue familiar with the Golden Age crime figures.

It's all admittedly a bit overly complex and in-jokey at points, but this was kind of the best way I could come up with to arrange everybody, and even then I'm mostly just covering Bruce's Robins, since Aloysius and Jace both have completely different dynamics with their Robins (John Blake and Tam Fox, respectively)
