There were two submissions I had going into round 2 that I had a fundamental problem with, and they were Eggman and Iroh.
Eggman, I wasn’t sure counted in the first place. Does building an artificial child count as adopting them??? I wasn’t sure I liked the idea of counting Orbot, Cubot, and Metal Sonic as adoptive kids for that reason—because I didn’t think it did. Ultimately though, I gave him a pass because the submitter also included Sonic himself (which I do love in the Boom continuity). With Sage, I thought I could handwave it because he didn’t technically create her as a person; she gained sentience and then he grew to love her.
(In the end it was fine. I accidentally stacked him up against two funny animals and he got whooped, as per usual.)
But Iroh???
Iroh????????????????
I’ve read most of the comics and seen the original show. His attention was mostly focused on Zuko (understandably), and he didn’t seem to have an opportunity to get very close to the rest of the Gaang (one singular moment in the Ba Sing Se catacombs notwithstanding). You can’t even count Azula because he thought she was crazy.
Like, what am I missing here? How did Iroh demonstrate himself an adopter to the Gaang if he didn’t even know most of them until the finale? Is there a moment in the comics I’m missing?
(That being said, this is on me for accepting fanon submissions.)

Alastair should win because he’s been through so, so much, from losing their parents in a car crash to being experimented on and losing his friends AND ghost’s right eye to the same serial mad scientist that performed those lethal experiments on it; hell he’s even DIED during and after those experiments on multiple occasions, only to be brought back from death for more of them!!
Very thin and frail body frame, pale, grayish skin, deep burgundy hair with side bangs dyed purple on the edge, two low-laying and white ahoges, yellow sclerae (right one is more clouded due to it being blind and scarred) with grey irises, and ink-like liquid dripping down from their face. More scars and stitches on the neck, down its torso from countless operations and surgeries, and along his limbs. (These are usually covered up by bandages.). Clothing is a dark purple-indigo with bright purple and yellow patches scattered throughout, with the hoodie drawstrings having ghost-shaped drawstring covers(?). Wears white sweatpants and barefoot. Hands and feet both have their digits a dark indigo fading into the palm/sole.

Character 299: he’s first introduced as the man with a scar. he’s canonically gay but the worst at relationships. he accidentally slept with the prime suspect for the case he’s supposed to be working on. he’s a cop but it’s the cold case unit so it’s probably fine. he’s looking into his dad’s suicide because he thinks he was murdered. his brother used to take child him to drug dens because he wanted to get high and didn’t particularly care about his kid brother. he keeps adopting kids and they keep betraying him. he’s been helping one of the constables to rise through the police force and she calls him sarge and helps bring him back to the world of not being stupid. his godmother is high up in the police force and he aggressively refuses to be part of nepotism and then later on she gets kidnapped. his life is terrible and he gets attached to crime scenes. he received the scar on his face from another member of the police force. he’s insane. i love him
he keeps getting info from the guy in charge of the mob. his friends keep turning out to be serial killers. he & one other police guy keep attacking police corruption but nobody likes them so it’s pretty slow. he has the worst taste in men. he straight up asked one guy “did you kill my dad?” and he once managed to break through a wall in a house on fire by scraping the slightly wet cement out from between the bricks and then running at the wall really hard. he’s literally a lunatic. i love this guy so much

Oh the Haven/Liam brainrot is hitting me hard now so I'll do this for them.
How did they first meet?
Through supremely funny circumstances ngl. Liam had just ruined all of his close relationships because he had let an eldritch abomination possess him so that he had the power to go after the serial killers that had killed his sister and a handful of other people, and eldritch energy tends to linger, so he kind of reeked of eldritch.
Haven was visiting a friend of hers who just so happened to live in the same building as Liam and was friends with him, a woman named Fred (she will come up later lmao), and Haven sensed the eldritch energy radiating from Liam. She has a bit of a history with this particular creature, so she stormed down to his apartment, kicked the door in, and threatened to kill him before Fred stopped her and explained the situation.
What was their first impression of each other?
Liam was honestly just kind of bamboozled at first. This woman had just broken into his apartment and threatened to kill him, but also she was kind of hot in an unhinged way, and she was the only one who didn't treat him like a fragile glass sculpture because of what he had been through.
Haven kind of just looked at Liam and went "oh...oh he's pathetic and fucked up...I must have him." It was also very weird for her to find someone who wasn't scared of her, and that kind of infuriated her.
Did any of their friends or family want them to get together?
Oh my god Fred shipped these two so hard she could tell they liked each other and she did literally everything in her power to put them in situations where they would be trapped alone together. And considering she had taught herself magic, there was a lot she could do lmao.
Liam's found family (a group of young adults he had kind of sort of adopted: Nicholas, Patricia, and Annie) had varying opinions on this. Patricia did NOT like Haven at all, Nicholas was down with helping Fred plan her shenanigans to get them together but he didn't really have a strong opinion about it, and Annie secretly kind of liked Haven, but she was too scared of Liam to really tell him she approved.
Haven's phoenix Fenris also very much approved of their relationship, but only if he got to third wheel because he likes to be in the center of EVERYTHING.
Who felt romantic feelings first?
Definitely Haven. She will deny it forever and always, but she definitely felt attraction first.
Did either of them try to resist their feelings?
Haven fought HARD against her feelings. She had had a lot of bad, traumatic experiences with relationships in the past, and she was TERRIFIED of entering into another one. One of her past relationships had been a manipulative immortal serial killer, one of them had been killed by said serial killer before she could admit her feelings, and her last non-one night stand had ended with the other person breaking up with her because they were scared of Haven's intensity.
She crumbled almost instantly when Liam showed a single crumb of genuine affection towards her though.
If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?
Haven: What the FUCK are you on about?? That's bullshit. No one likes me that much.
Liam, very hopefully: Wait, really?
What would their lives be like if they had never met?
A big part of their relationship arc is that they would both be so much worse off without each other. Liam was quickly on his way to drinking himself to death because of how he damaged his relationships with his found family and the trauma of everything he'd been through, and Haven would have probably turned out ten times worse had Liam not become what was basically her morality pet.
Haven did have other very important relationships that might have kept her grounded (like her two children she basically adopted, Fred, and her phoenix Fenris), but none of them were romantic, and none of them ever got to know Haven as well as Liam did. Even if it hadn't been romantic, Liam was able to get close to Haven and help her heal in a way no one else had been able to do in centuries, and it was crucial for her in so many ways.

Same thing, but not quite
Some of the things that show that Din Djarin and Crosshair are the same character with the serial numbers filed off:
They’ve both switched out their armor since their shows began, one got to be shiny and bright, the other didn’t
Crosshair started out with a ‘horn’ on his shoulder armor, Din gained a picture of one on his as the show progressed (opposite shoulders). The other shoulder (on both men) just has a central stripe
Crosshair had a piece of padding for his shoulder attached to the bandolier strap, Din’s cross body strap has a mounting bracket for attaching one
They both started out with a modified sniper rifle of a design we’ve never seen anyone else using
They both lost those rifles. Crosshair chose to give his up, Din’s was destroyed along with the Razor Crest
Crosshair put his helmet on to get some privacy and hide his face, Din only takes his helmet off/shows his face in total privacy
They’ve both been reprimanded for not wearing their helmet
Both have had large numbers of their people die without them being able to do anything about it
They both want to find a place and time for their people to be able to live freely in the sun instead of having to hide away in the shadows
Both were tasked with stealing a child
Both have ended up being saddled with that child they never asked for
Both have rescued a child that wasn’t theirs and meant nothing to them personally
They both have a BIG ‘brother’. I mean, Paz is literally Wrecker, only in blue. He even does Wrecker’s signature pose when Bo’s Mandos come and meet the others and he faces Axe for the first time
We see Din napping while his ship is in flight, Crosshair did that too in the story reels (which were then removed from the final edit)
Both of them have worked with a crew consisting of the strong one, the girl who fawned all over him, the man she was prepared to do anything for, and the droid
They both chose not to kill a target when they could easily have done, and it would have made their life much simpler
They both got locked up in a jail cell even though they’d done nothing wrong
They’ve both risked their own safety to keep their respective droid friend safe and in one piece despite their individual solid reasons for not having any base trust in droids
They’ve both been programmed to behave in a certain way by the woman who holds power over them
They’ve both worked with a clone outsider to complete a mission
Crosshair didn’t get to go to Pabu, the peaceful and tranquil tropical island where everything appears to be natural and open, and the people all work together to create their idyllic life there. But Din did get to go to the high-tech, completely enclosed, Alice in Wonderland themed, complete and total opposite of Pabu
They’ve both done some seriously dodgy shit for money. They’ve been careful not to let us see how much of a problem Crosshair had with that because we only see his story just before they team are separated, but we’ve seen that Din has been willing to take any job, anywhere, any time.
That barely mentioned (so far) sub-plot about Nanodroids
They’ve both had their Darth Maul reference moment
Both of them have a dodgy friend with black market contacts
They both put a lot of effort into lugging a suit of armour back to where it came from, admittedly only one of those had a person in it at the time
They both lost their ship that was also their home and their only means of independent travel
Crosshair shot his asshole CO, where Din only watched while Mayfield shot his
Both children they’re directly connected to had to be rescued from the water either by or for them
Din has chosen to adopt the child placed in his care, Crosshair doesn’t want anything to do with the child his team picked up. Even though they share a running ball theme, even if one show is far less obvious about it
Crosshair knows as much about the Jedi as Din doesn’t
Din sustained a severe head injury which necessitated his helmet being removed by someone else in order to provide treatment, Crosshair’s helmet was removed by blast force allowing him to receive his severe head injury, in addition to other injuries
IG-11 sacrificed himself to protect his team, Din and Grogu. Tech sacrificed himself to protect his team even though that didn’t include Crosshair at the time
They both know one good Captain who’s prepared to stand up for what he believes in, to trust in him after seeing the sort of man he is through his choices and his actions

“Papa, we need to talk,” Kasumi says, strolling into the living room with a thick binder tucked against her chest.
“Yes?” Papa stops folding their laundry and turns to her, adopting a serious expression on his face. “Unicorn’s vomit?”
Kasumi nods her head. Unicorn’s vomit is their secret code for dire, serious business that requires their full attention. “It’s about your marriage,” she answers gravely.
Papa blinks. "Say that again?"
"Marry," she says, enunciating the word carefully. "It's about time for you to get marry, so I brought some options for you to choose from."
"Kasumi-chan, I thought we’d talked about this." Papa frowns, looking concern. "I'm happy with just us two. I'm not looking for another person to add into our family."
Kasumi sighs, because they did but Papa fought it off every time like it's her happiness is on the line here and not his. She got this though. Didn't spend an hour rehearsing her argument to not win.
“Papa," she starts, "I’m getting older now and one day I won’t be able to take care of you anymore—“
“You’re ten,” Papa cuts in.
Kasumi scowls. “That’s not the point though! I’m just saying I can’t always be with you and I don’t want you to feel lonely when I’m not there.”
“I won’t be alone,” Papa points out. “I have your grandmother with me.”
“Who will die before you,” she counters viciously. And then, she sends a silence apology to grandmother for using her against Papa. “And where will that leave you?”
Papa winces. “Can we please not speak of death so early in the morning?”
Kasumi’s lips thin in displeasure, but she lets her shoulders hunched over, making herself smaller as she says, “I just want you to be happy and surrounded by someone who can love you even when I’m not there.”
Papa's eyes soften at her words.
Jackpot. Now going in for the kill, Kasumi looks away for a second and drops her voice to a slight tremor like she can barely contain her emotion. "A—and I always wanted to know what it's like to have another parent like all the other kids."
"Oh, Kasumi-chan," Papa breaths, and there's a slight wet sheen to his eyes. He catches her free hand in his and squeezes it comfortingly. His lips wobble precariously but he holds firm enough to says, "Okay, I understand."
Kasumi tries not to smile but it's near thing.
It's a silence and unacknowledged victory, but she'll take it. "Perfect," she declares, pulling away from Papa enough to show him her portfolio. "This," she points toward her binder, "is 'Operation: Get Papa a Rich Handsome Alpha Husband' or as I call it 'Get rich or Die Trying'."
"That's—" Papa frowns, making a face before finally settling on, "a cute name."
Kasumi puffs up her chest proudly. It took her some time to come up with it. "Isn't it?" She opens the binder and steers Papa's eyes to the first page. "Now, I'd carefully handpicked and narrowed down a handful of viable candidates so far for you. I'd chosen only the best of the bests for you, Papa!" She flips to the next page where several categories are listed out. "I placed each candidate in order by how they fair in the ratings in the criteria I found them in."
Papa cocks his head thoughtfully. "Such as?"
"Well, wealth for one, then looks, family oriented, reputation, employment," she starts, listing them off one by one, "character, likeability, past relationship, education, health, and feelings toward the quirkless."
Papa's eyes twitches. "That's very thorough, Kasumi-chan."
"I did my homework." She preens. It took her several months to gather all the necessary information needed for her data sheets, but she'd pulled through. The fact that a lot of things can be found on the internet had helped a lot, but it was a long and arduous work. Anything for her Papa, indeed.
"Thank you for the hard work." Papa's eyes crinkle and he smiles softly at her. "You're amazing as always, Kasumi-chan." And it's this kind of thing that make Kasumi's heart soar because only Papa, her dearest Papa, make her feels so elated that he wants to launch herself into his lap and scream in joy. She’d known that she’s strong and mighty only because she got Papa to support her up.
At the end of the day, Kasumi is really no good without her Papa.
So, right, she got a mission to complete. "Of course." She clears her throat. Turning several pages forward, she lands on a spread with a picture glued to a corner, several graphs, and blocks of text all over it. "Now, the no. 1 candidate so far at a 7.2 rating is Hirota Ryuu—"
"Our family doctor?" Papa's brows furrow. "And your highest is a 7.2 out of what, a ten?"
"Yes, Hirota-sensei! And there's always room for improvement." She huffs. "Not everyone can be as perfect as you and me, Papa."
Papa stifles a laugh into his hand. "Okay, go on."
"Alright," she says, straightening her back. "For one thing: he's handsome enough that you won't get bored looking at his face, he's a doctor so he must make enough money to spoil you, and he's nice. All the kids and parents I'd interviewed like him a lot. And so do you." Kasumi eyes Papa pointedly and Papa blushes. “He’s blond. Just your type, Papa.”
"Well, he is handsome," he admits wistfully. “And I do like blond hair.”
"Good," she nods her head, pleased with herself, "because I gave him bonus point for that. Anyone that you attracted to get extra points for making you happy,” she says, touching a careless hand to a stray blond hair of her own. Papa really does like blond hair.
Papa's lips wobble again and he reaches out for a hug but she steps out of the way, shaking her head. "Nope, not until I'm done then you can give me all the snuggles and kisses you want," she says, like it's a heavy burden to be basked in Papa's loving attention and care.
Papa's face fall as he sits back down, but he holds himself still and rapt in attention before her again. "Okay, so," she plows on, "Hirota-sensei scores pretty good all across the board, but the only reason his score is that low is the fact he's a serial dater." She makes a face."I can't have Papa competing with others for sensei's attention when it's the other way around. Your partner should always put your first and foremost!"
"Right," Papa agrees in amusement, which made Kasumi's narrow her eyes slightly because this is serious business.
It's Papa's happiness on the line here, so she's not playing around. "Alright, so next we have as candidate no. 2 is," she says, flipping several pages ahead, "Todoroki Shouto or as he is known to the public Hero Synergy. He's a 7.0 and a pretty good catch overall. I think he’s good secondary choice."
Papa perks up at that.
"You love heroes and he's from a family of them so that gave Todoroki-san a huge advantage over the other competitors,” she continues. “And if you look at his income bracket—”
Papa grimaces. “Kasumi-chan, is that category really necessary? Isn’t just enough if I like him at all?”
Kasumi gives him a look. "Papa, I may be young but I'm no fool," she says, rolling her eyes. "Love alone is not going keep a roof over our head and put food on our table. Here," she points toward a number distribution chart, "this is the average annual income for a top ranking hero. Since his father was a former no. 1 and he also got a good reputation with the public, Todoroki-san has a good amount of sponsors and contracts. That’s mean he’s loaded, Papa,” she says the last sentence carefully in case Papa hadn’t pick up the clue yet.
Papa heaves an amused sigh and nods. “Alright, he’s rich got it.”
“Now, his only downsize," Kasumi grimaces, "is that he got the personality of a brick wall."
Papa chokes out a laugh. "You shouldn't say something like that, Kasumi-chan!"
"Well," she starts, looking heavenward in annoyance, "he is a little dull. His interviews all come off as tedious as watching paint dry and I nearly fell asleep a minute in watching them. His beautiful face can only get him so far. A handsome partner is fine but if their personality is nothing but a stale bread then you'll only get bored later. Emi-chan told me that a relationship need some spice in it to spark passion," she explains. Emi is only a months older than her, but she held hand with a boy before so she knows what she's saying.
Papa reels back, flushing. "You're too young to have that kind of conversation with your friends."
"Okay," she lies effortlessly, like the lying liar that she is. "So moving on to no. 3 now." She turns the page once more, but this time reluctantly as she lands on the next one.
"He's—" she pulls a face, "not my prefer choice but, here is Bakugou Katsuki or Hero Ground Zero as you may know him with a 6.9 rating."
Papa immediately stiffens at that name and eyes zeroes in on Bakugou's page right away. No surprise there.
Growing up, how can she not noticed that Bakugou have always been a trigger for Papa. "I don't like him," she states flatly with narrowed eyes. "Sure he's handsome, powerful, and is the no.1 hero in Japan but he's also rude, belligerent, and annoying." She can tick off all his flaws all day, she isn’t going to waste her breath on him. "There are other candidates fairing much better than him all other categories. He's only rated so high," she eyes Papa meaningfully, "because you like-like him so much."
Papa stutters. "W-what?!”
"I know about the photos of Zero you've collected and hidden under the bed! You don't have to lie to me, Papa," she says, smiling sharply. "I know of your crush on him. You watched his entire interviews and bought all his merchs like you don't know I wasn't going to find it eventually. I even think he’s the reason you have such a blond fetish."
“Don’t say fetish. Who even taught you that word?” Papa drops his face into his hand and groans. "Mercy. Mercy, please, Kasumi-chan. Let me live.”
“I just pity any offspring produce from his DNA,” she grumbles. “They’re probably as terrible as him.”
Papa lifts his head and breathes, “Oh, Kasumi-chan, you’re going to regret those words so much.”

The XL ends up accused for killing his family (because of a lot of different things) what is important is that he was not the perpetrator but he did kill LQQ’s father in an act to save the boy from making a horrible decision/outcome and also dealt with the actual perpetrators but kept it a secret cause he knew it would break LQQ’s heart to learn his dear friend planned to kill him and his entire family. LQQ took this betrayal by XL so hard he buried him after staking him through the heart when he was still alive. 300 years later when XL returns/is revealed LQQ is still not over it to the point he wants a FAIR duel to settle the score. FAIR with the man he still thinks killed his entire family!
Banyue and Pei Su are connected. XL took BY under his wing while he was a soldier in the army. He did his best to protect her and get her fed as she had pretty much no one. He also talked with her about his younger selfs dreams for the future which was so inspiring to her that not only did she remember it over a century later when they meet again in very different circumstances but she also apologized for essentially not being able to live up to the ideals he had accidentally passed on to her. While he didn’t have as much direct contact with Pei Su, the boy was BY’s only friend and so while XL was around he did also interact with the boy. However this all came to an end when in an attempt to save BY (which succeeded) he through himself in between two armies and was trampled when they began to fight. When they meet again (as I previously mentioned) XL takes BY under his safety until he is not safe and then sends her off to a safe place where she reunites with PS, who for all XL doesn’t give the same amount of attention to, XL does actually approve of some of him (not all his actions) and seems to find it cute that PS is courting BY.
XL meets Lang Ying first when he helps the boy burry his proxy sister, LY ends up running off after XL reacted with shock to LY’s uncovered face, but XL keeps a constant search for him. XL next saves him from getting beat up by ghosts and ends up taking him to live with him in the shrine he lives in. He does his best to take care of both LY and Gu Zi at the shrine and keeps his good treatment up even knowing LY’s a ghost it only ends when (spoilers for non book people, feel free to look up if you want to know).
XL takes in GZ mostly as his ghost cousin (whom he arrested) has taken over the body of the boy’s father. While I’m not sure how much this one counts, especially since by the end his cousin ends up caring for GZ, but he still does the best he can to feed and care for the boy as his entire life changes.”

What are Lowe boats? Lowe is a classic boat brand in the marine industry, manufacturing boats that span in size from 11 feet to 25 feet. Boat Trader currently has 822 Lowe boats for sale, including 736 new vessels and 86 used boats listed by both individuals and professional boat dealers mainly in. The model and serial numbers of the vertical drive should be located on the engine model and serial number plate. If the vertical drive model and serial numbers are not recorded with the engine model and serial number, they can be found on a plate located on the vertical drive. See illustration above.
Confusion over model years, especially on outboard engines, can frustrate buyers. Here's how to find that info on the products themselves.

General Motors introduced planned obsolescence in the 1920s as a way of discerning one model year from another, in order to convince the public that buying the latest model car was fashionable, if not exactly necessary. The tradition set by GM survives today. Eventually, consumers began to rely on the model-year change, which usually happened in the fall, to assure that they were getting the latest and greatest. Car buyers still eagerly anticipate the newest technology, and dealers often offer deep discounts to move out last year's models.
Prior to 1969, Johnson model numbers were year-specific; serial numbers were used in identification. Johnsons from the 1969 to 1979 era use the last two digits of the year at the end of the model number to identify the model year; for example, a Johnson model number ending in '-4RL79' was built in 1979. The hull identification number (HIN) on all boats built after November 1, 1972 is permanently affixed to the rear of the transom usually on the upper right corner. It is required by federal law and must appear on the registration application.
Manufacturers of other big-ticket items, such as boats and outboards, followed suit, hoping to convince buyers that the newer the boat, the better the boat. For years, U.S. Coast Guard regulations required boat manufacturers to use August 1 of the previous year as the cutoff date for the next model year. For example, a boat built in September 2011 could be called a 2012 model, but if it was built in July, it had to be sold as a 2011.
When buying a used boat, take a rubbing of the boat's HIN using a pencil and paper to ensure it matches the seller's documents.
In 2012, boatbuilders petitioned the Coast Guard to change the date to June 1, allowing for an extra two months of production to still be labeled as next year's model. Manufacturers argued that because of marine production schedules, which, unlike automaker schedules, tend to fall at erratic times throughout the year, they needed to have more flexibility in designating the time span of their new model year.
The Coast Guard agreed to make the change, permitting a couple of months of last year's boats to be called this year's.
Fortunately, it's fairly simple to find your boat's build date. (See 'HINs By The Numbers') The information with the boat's model year is contained in the hull identification number (HIN), which is a label permanently affixed to the boat. The number includes a date assigned by the builder. This date is technically not the date of manufacture; rather, it's the date on which the boat was certified by the builder to meet Coast Guard regulations.
Some boats, especially large ones, may be on the floor for months before completion (even straddling the June cutoff date), while others may be finished in a matter of days. To be consistent, the Coast Guard uses the date the manufacturer says the boat meets federal regs. Once the HIN is assigned and affixed, that date becomes the boat's model year, regardless of when it was actually finished.
Once a HIN has been put on the boat, it can't be changed without permission from the commandant of the Coast Guard, which rarely happens. New boat buyers should look at the HIN and verify that the boat in which they're interested actually belongs to the model year that the dealer claims for it. Used-boat buyers should also decipher the HIN and make sure it matches what the seller and paperwork state.
What About My Engine?
The month and year of engine manufacture can usually be found on a sticker near the engine's serial number.
The Coast Guard has no model-year regulations for outboard engines, making it harder for consumers to determine the year in which they were built. In 2007, Yamaha stopped designating model years for its outboard engines entirely. Though the reasoning is sound, it creates a challenge for consumers.
Unlike cars, in which engines are built into the product, a selection of engines usually can be fitted on outboard boats. Dealers have struggled for years to make sure that the engines bought from an engine manufacturer during one year get sold that same year on new boats.
If a boat on the showroom floor comes with a 200-hp engine but a buyer wants a 250-hp engine, the dealer may have to order the bigger engine and keep the smaller one in stock. If it takes a couple of years to finally sell that 200-hp engine, a buyer may be reluctant to buy it if the model year isn't current, and the dealer may have to subsequently discount it. Buyers typically want a 2017 engine, for example, on their 2017 boat.
Eliminating the model year solves the problem for the manufacturer and dealer but can be confusing for buyers. Other outboard manufacturers, including Mercury and Honda, adopted Yamaha's practice, and most outboard engines today don't have model-year designations. Outboard manufacturers say that until they make a significant change to an engine, the year it was built is irrelevant. While that's true, buyers are concerned that if there's no model-year designation, they don't know if they're getting the newest technology.
Fortunately, there's still a way to determine when an outboard was built. After discontinuing model years, engine manufacturers replaced the model-year designator on the engine's serial number with a code that signifies an 'era' in which all engines are supposed to be the same, with similar upgrades. Consumers, however, are concerned that with computer controls, mechanically identical engines could have electronic updates applied to a batch of similar models, and earlier ones might not benefit.
What's considered an upgrade? In the end, the engine manufacturer gets to decide what it is and when there's enough of one to create a new model. Fortunately, dealers usually know which engines in their stock have the most current changes, and you should ask before buying.
What About Warranties?
Manufacturers say that the warranty begins when the engine is sold, regardless of its build date. BoatUS members have asked BoatUS Consumer Protection about engines that may have been sitting around for two or three years. What if they've been damaged over time? By unknowingly buying an engine that may be one, two, or even three years older than their new boat, will they be hit with higher depreciation when it comes time to sell their boat?
Fortunately, the manufacturer's warranty will cover even older engines of the same model, but buyers should verify how many hours are on an engine before buying it. Manufacturers say that depreciation should not be an issue on two identical engines of the same model, regardless of age, but most buyers want the newest one available, and an older engine, even if it's indistinguishable from a newer one, is typically worth less to a first or second buyer.
The good news for consumers is that while outboard engines may not have model years, it's possible to find out when the engine was made. In recent years, a permanent sticker typically can be found on the transom bracket, usually near the serial-number sticker, that gives the month and year of engine manufacture. As a buyer, you can negotiate for the newest engine — or for a discounted older one — if you know what to look for.
HINs By The Numbers
A typical hull identification number (HIN) consists of 12 letters and numbers, as in ABC12345D404.
Here's what the letters and numbers mean:
ABC: This is the U.S. Coast Guard-assigned manufacturer identification code (MIC). Go to the USCG Manufacturers Indentification page to access the Coast Guard's MIC database.
12345: This is the serial number assigned to the hull by the manufacturer. This may be a combination of letters and numbers. The letters 'I,' 'O,' and 'Q' are excluded because they could be mistaken for numbers.
D: This is the month of certification, indicating the month in which construction began. 'A' represents January and 'L' represents December. In our example, 'D' means April.
4: This is the year of certification. The number is the last digit of the year in which the boat was built. '4' in this case designates 2004.
04: This indicates the boat's model year.

6 big life events and the role taxes play
A first job is a major life event with obvious major tax implications. Other momentous changes throughout our lives involve taxes, too.
As COVID-19 continues to spread across the United States, the White House has decided to follow state and local officials in urging continued social (aka physical) distancing.
For millions of us, this new April 30 stay home recommendation means more time cooped up with loved ones. Or not-so-loved ones.
My favorite non-medical virus-related debate right now is whether all the coronavirus forced togetherness ultimately will end with a baby boom (coronials, anyone?) or a marriage bust.
While the hubby and I definitely won't be adding to the U.S. population, neither will we be splitting up. We've both worked from home for the last 15 years, so we sort of have this always underfoot situation under control.
Others, however, might find all this unexpected 24/7 time could produce a major life change. And most of the time, such changes also have tax implications.
Here are six ways that your personal and lifestyle changes — including marital status changes and family additions — affect, for good or bad, your taxes.
Coronavirus Caveat
The following tax situations apply to more normal life and tax times.
We aren't in normal times right now.
The COVID-19 pandemic's extraordinary disruption,
of both our lives and taxes,
means that some of them aren't so important or applicable
as we focus on just getting through these trying days.
But life as we knew it before the coronavirus will return,
along with our mundane tax matters.
Here's hoping that happens soon!
1. Landing your first job
The best thing about getting your first full-time paying job is the money. The worst thing is that you have to share some of that income with Uncle Sam. There are income, both federal and, for folks in most of the United States, state and sometimes local taxes that come out of our paychecks before we even get them.
The payroll taxes are set by Federal Insurance Contributions Act, or FICA. This law established the employer-employee shared automatic pay-ins to support Social Security and Medicare benefits.
They are set at a total of 15.3 percent of your pay, with 12.4 percent going to the government retirement benefits program and 2.9 percent to medical coverage for when you're older. Your boss pays half of each Social Security and Medicare payroll tax amounts. You pay the other half.
You do, however, have some control over how much income tax comes out of your pay by adjusting your withholding.
If you have too much withheld, you'll get a refund when you file. That's not necessarily bad, but you could have that money — your own money — year-round as a bit more in each paycheck.
On the other hand, if you don't have enough withheld, you could face an unexpected tax bill at filing time. That also means possible underwithholding penalties.
You can make sure you have the proper amount withheld — tax gurus (and the Internal Revenue Service) say that should be an amount that's as close as possible to your eventual tax liability — by filling out a new W-4 form and giving it to your payroll administrator. The IRS' online Tax Withholding Estimator can help you run the numbers to determine what goes on your W-4.
Finally, don't forget your job's benefits. Many workplaces offer tax-favored employee perks, like health insurance, associated medical flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and 401(k) retirement plans.
2. Getting married
You didn't invite Uncle Sam to your wedding, but he became a big part of your new wedded life as soon as you and your spouse exchanged vows.
The year you say "I do", even if you utter that phrase on Dec. 31, means the IRS considers you married for the full tax year. If there are tax or financial reasons to not be married in one year over another (like the hubby and me way back when we waited for a new tax break to kick in), then take that into account when planning your big event.
The first time that you file taxes as a married couple you'll have to choose a new filing status, either married filing separately or married filing jointly. Joint filing is the most common choice of wedded duos because it generally produces the best tax results.
Yes, the marriage tax penalty is still around, but it's not as severe thanks largely to the broadening of the tax bracket for that filing status. Plus, some tax breaks aren't allowed to a husband and wife who file separate returns.
Even before filling out that first shared Form 1040, if both spouses work each should reassess withholding amounts. The IRS says it's generally better for the higher-earning spouse to claim all the couple's allowances on his or her W-4, with the lower wage earner claiming zero.
Also be sure to take a look at your tax-favored workplace benefits and coordinate to maximize between spouses. For those that require family circumstances in order to adjust them, marriage definitely qualifies.
3. Having children
Congratulations on your new baby. Your favorite Uncle Sam wants to help cover some of your growing family's costs via a variety of child-related tax breaks.
Your new dependent youngster allows you to claim the Child Tax Credit, which was expanded by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). It gives you a tax credit, which is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of any tax you owe, of up to $2,000 per qualifying child. A portion of it also could in some situations be refundable, meaning exactly what that descriptor says: if you don't owe any tax, the credit comes back to you as a refund.
If your family grew via an adoption, there's a tax credit (and possible a tax-free workplace benefit) to cover some of the many costs of that process.
Working parents can use the child and dependent care credit to pay for some of the costs of caring for their kids while they are on the job.
And the tax code also offers several ways to help families save for and pay for your future student's educational costs.
4. Buying (and selling) a home
Your growing family means you need more space. Not only will a bigger abode mean more space, it also could provide some tax breaks. Note, however, that you'll need to itemize to claim most of them and that's become a less popular filing option since the TCJA greatly increased the standard deduction amounts.
Still, if you find your home makes filling a Schedule A worthwhile, you can deduct the interest you pay on your primary residence's mortgage up to $750,000 (for home loans taken out after Dec. 14, 2017). Interest on a home equity loan or line of credit of up to $100,000 also is deductible as long as the money is used for purposes directly related to the home.
Property tax you pay on your main house also is deductible, but it could be limited. The TCJA caps all tax deductions, both real estate and state income amounts, at a combined $10,000.

5. Dealing with divorce

One ex-spouse also typically is granted sole ownership of the family home. This could pose a problem for the newly single owner, especially when he or she sells the property. The profit exclusion amount then is just $250,000 versus the $500,000 that married filing jointly homeowners can exclude. Take that possibility into account before finalizing your split, perhaps opting to sell the house before the divorce and splitting the tax-free profits as part of the final decree.
Similarly, you need to take into account the tax treatment of other assets when dividing them. For example, a spouse who gets capital gains assets will owe less tax than on property, such as tax-deferred retirement accounts, that are taxed at ordinary rates.
6. Relishing retirement

Social Security benefits generally are tax-free as long as you don't have a lot of other income.
And if you do have to file a tax return when you're older, you can claim a larger standard deduction amount on the new Form 1040-SR simply because you're age 65 or older.
