As of Batman: The Brave and the Bold #12, local precious-gremlin-who-I-would-die-for, Maps Mizoguchi, is now officially(?) the sixth Robin. Or at the very least, she's now "in" on The Secret™.

If this isn’t a set up for her taking up the Robin mantle officially then I genuinely don’t know what is.

As one of the twelve Gotham Academy enjoyers in existence, I am having the extremely normal reaction of "FUCKING FINALLY! LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO--!"

In all honesty, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't seen this coming from miles away. Like, Maps has appeared in a number of seemingly random cameo roles recently, including Batgirls (2021), and even technically as Robin in the backup issues of Batman (2016) #119-121, and in a short story in Batman Black & White. And most of those got collected in a standalone titled "Maps of Mystery", which specifically gathered all her appearances as Robin (and the Gotham Academy Belle Reve story).

And then, of course, her recent time-travelling Future-Trunks-esque appearance in Birds of Prey (2023), as the tech-based Meridian, from a potential future timeline where she apparently makes it as a superhero using gadgets she apparently designed, proving that she's hero material.

That's not something you do for a character for no reason. That's the sort of thing you do when you want to keep a character in the conscience of your readers for whatever reason, because you have bigger plans for them.

Also interesting to consider that, in the "Mother's Day" story where this took place, Alfred is standing right there and not lying down six feet under wood, dirt and a stone slab, and that Bruce is in the old Batcave under the manor so he still has Money™, I must assume this was some nebulous time in the past (after GA: Second Semester(?), but before City of Bane)... which I won't bother to analyse the exact timeframe of because DC doesn't care about the post-Flashpoint / New 52 / Rebirth / Prime Earth / idfk / Dawn of DC timeline, so neither should I.

But I think it's really funny that this presumably means Maps has known The Secret™ for a long time relative to present-day comics, but always acted like she didn't.

But if all her appearances are in chronological order, that means Bruce is only the fourth Bat whose identity she discovered.

Like, she discovered Cass' identity almost by accident on a trip to the zoo, Damian showed off his grapple gun and gave her an actual Batarang during the three hours he was enrolled in the school (as if she wouldn't immediately put two-and-two together even back then), and she even found out Terry fucking McGuinness would become Batman in a future via a time-travelling grandfather clock.

No I did not make that last part up. Read Gotham Academy istg.

Did Cass know that Maps had been acting as a Robin when she met her, both at the zoo in Batgirls and her future version in Birds of Prey?

Does Damian know the one (1) friend(?) he made in Gotham Academy is potentially in the running for his job?

Is Bruce himself aware that she knows as much about their identities as she currently does?

How is DC going to retcon this so it all makes sense in the barely-functioning canon of the modern DC universe?

I'm digressing. Where was I going with this?

Point is, she's destined to become a Robin, and I'm glad DC finally pulled their fingers out their asses and capitalised on that destiny.

Let's just hope it doesn't take another year for them to follow up on this plotline again.

Quick Thoughts on Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023-) #12

Spoilers for Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023-) #12

Maps! As some might realise, I am quite the fan of Maps Mizoguchi. Gotham Academy was one of the first comics I read in great length and Maps herself is quite the fun character. So I’ve been looking forward to each part of her appearance in Brave and the Bold.

And let me say; #12 did not disappoint…

Maps is OFFICIAL Robin! Woohoo!

Maps is now an official Robin! Not only that but she also knows Batman’s secret identity. Interestingly though; Alfred is alive in this which means this all happened sometime before “the present”, which means chronologically she’d actually known this info for quite the while now.

Does kinda make me wonder what exactly she’s been up too during all the events between “the present” and her discovering Batman’s identity. I’ve seen it suggested on Reddit she might’ve been off looking for Olive; which would make sense since Olive’s whereabouts a very major hanging plot thread.

They made a point of starting this arc in #10 with a flashback to Olive; so that could suggest that a return to her plot line and what she’s been up to since the conclusion of second semester is being set up.

Overall though. I really loved this arc, and it was great to see Maps as Robin and even get acknowledged as such by Bruce. And I have enjoyed both seeing Maps in action as Robin and also her dynamic with Bruce.

Having Maps be skilled a researching monsters like Kappas and such has been a pretty neat reoccurring skill Maps has displayed in her appearances. Gotham Academy did tend to lean towards the more supernatural aspects of the Gotham setting and so it seems fitting for Maps to have this speciality.

Batgirls (2022-2023) #11

Also, while I'm not the biggest expert in comic book continuity and stuff; I think Batgirls probably takes place after Alfred's death, right? So that means Maps already knew Batman's secret identity when talking to Cass here. Kinda odd she's taking some random girl (from her perspective; since its later established she doesn't know Cass' surname and this is before Cass reveals she also has a Batman connection) to find the Batcave... although in hindsight, her having already visited the Batcave at this point would explain how she knows of its existence in the first place.

I do wonder though what Maps is up to in the present though.

Also…

Poor Isla MacPherson. Dating a billionaire with a playboy reputation is hard enough, but she got attacked by an infected Bruce in her own home and had her dog knocked aside. Granted, Gotham Academy has some strange stuff, but getting attacked in her own home (especially while being a normal teacher instead of a vigilante or anything) would be a special kind of terrifying.

And even if Maps is often involved with strange stuff at the school, her presence must be quite bizarre from Isla’s perspective. Maps just straight up broke into her house, saved her, and then nonchalantly explained the situation.

Gotta wonder if either of them ever mentions this night, or if Isla just tries to ignore that time her billionaire ex turned into some kinda vampire and got knocked out by her student.

I don't know if I've said this before but I have ADHD. And im saying this bc while I can hold down a job, when it comes to personal creative work I can be quite nonchalant when it comes to long-term projects and I usually never finish them. Which is extremely frustrating that my attention can never be well enough to keep momentum with doing projects that I really love.

The Daily life of Damian is a very special project to me bc its my take on a character I've loved for a long time, but I get frustrated with myself when I struggle to get a page done or to write things out. I'm only a few pages in and it feels like my brain has quit before it got started.

But I don't want to give into my old habits. I want to see this through, even if I gotta crawl my way to the finish line, I'm gonna do this! I want this to be something I look back on and be proud of! That I say "hell yea...I did that". No matter how long it takes, this is gonna happen.

If this is the only big comic project I ever do, I wanna do the best I can with it.

New pages coming out in a month. It'll be a longer update than last time.

Maps have an inclination towards swords is something which has been gotten mentioned a few times. With her having rather instantly preferring the katana out of all the weapons in the armoury.

Batgirls continues this by having Maps' absence in #17 get explained by her having fencing practice, something which we finally see in the latest issue of the current Brave and the Bold run.

Just thought this was a neat detail.

Hope to see more of Maps being an awesome sword fighter going forward!

Spy X Family, Danny Phantom, and DC Comics

Athanasia al Ghul x Danny

It had been a few years since Danny stopped doing hero work and worked for Amanda Waller. His ghost powers made him a good spy, and his pay is very high. It's plain cheating for him in the black ops.

Danny didn't have much of a problem with Mrs. Waller, as Clockwork would take him out if Amanda Waller tried to betray him.

He was sent with a new mission that would take longer in Gotham: finding a massive drug empire of the upper class. A mix of the drugs used by the villain in Gotham, find the formula, and destroy the empire.

To accomplish this he needed present the image of a happy family, Danny left with his adopted daughter/clone, Dani or Ellie, and over time dated and married a woman named Athanasia.

Unbeknown to Danny, Dani had gained a new power to read minds, and Athanasia is in fact a former assassin of the League of Assassins who left them after they thought she was dead. Ra knows she was alive, but her mother, Talia, and the rest thought she was dead.

Neither Danny nor Athanasia are aware of each other's true identities. As Athanasia worked to be a mother, Danny worked to find the drug empire. And Ellie is having fun at school with her new friends.

Danny and Athanasia had a good time and relationship with each other, and Danny could see a life with her. Even if dating a free-lance psychologist is a funny feeling for her.

Dani was having a good time at Gotham Academy. She befriended new friend and in such way made Danny meet the parent to find out if she befriended them. She got friends in Mia "Maps" Mizoguchi, Olive Silverlock, Jon Kent, and Damian Wayne.

Dani is pretty proud of Bruce Wayne; he is old money. If anyone knew about it or was part of it, this man or someone he knew was part of it.
