forever?
pairing: mob!bucky x reader
summary: after being forced into a marriage you didn’t want, you become very cautious of your new husband out of fear of what he’s capable of when one of his employees makes a move at a dinner meeting.
warnings: anxious reader, threat of domestic violence (reader is just worried abt it), groping, please let me know if i missed something or need to add anything!
a/n: reader is very timid in this. i know a lot of people like a reader who doesn’t take shit and stands up for herself, but i often find myself in situations where i just shut down and don’t know how to respond… so this is kinda inspired by that feeling
Tumblr media
two months out of forever.
two months of what seemed like wedded bliss from the outside.
in reality, that “bliss” included sleeping in separate rooms, never even seeing each other unless necessary to make appearances for either of your parents.
the ones who arranged for this to happen in the first place.
you were just glad you were able to have your time for yourself. you thought you would use the time to continue writing for your book, but you’ve hit a serious case of writers block. so lovely.
on the bright side, he wasn’t as controlling as your few friends had made it seem he would be.
they had painted this picture of a monster in your head. a man who would loom over your presence during every waking second. a man who was controlling and wouldn’t let you have a personal life or secrets.
so far, he’s been the opposite.
for some reason, that still leaves you unsteady.
because they also painted him in a very violent, angry, red light.
but maybe he had a mistress. if that were the case, he truly didn’t respect you or your family. it didn’t seem like bucky to do that, though. he wouldn’t ruin a business deal that benefitted him so much.
the reason you married him was because your father’s finance business was going under, drowned in debts while the only options were to sell to the barnes’ or the rumlow’s. the barnes’ seemed the lesser of two evils.
the only way to smoothly transition your father’s business to be under the barnes’ control without raising any question of your father’s capability was to marry. if any questions were asked about why your father sold his company, the not so good side of the finance industry would trample after your entire family. the barnes’ would get a new company and their many clients, while your family wouldn’t become entirely blacklisted by the entire country, would be putting your family under the barnes’ protection, and there would be less questions asked as to why the company had been merged.
you had a few months of “leaking” images of you and bucky together into the tabloids to prepare the public for the news of such a big marriage. some were photos of you and bucky holding hands while walking. a couple of you at a restaurant smiling. a few staged kissing photos… those may or may not have been your favorite.
those times spent with him, in all honesty, weren’t bad at all. going for walks together at sunset, dinner dates, feeling his lips against yours…
you had gotten to know more about his childhood that the tabloids didn’t feel was important to cover. his favorite subject in school and how he actually lost his arm so many years ago. you learned each others’ fears and worries in life. your favorite thing to learn about him, however, was what he truly wanted in life.
peace.
a couple weeks after the wedding, a few photos of the reception were once again “leaked” in order to sell the “too in love to wait” bit that everyone had started assuming upon seeing the first few photos of you and bucky together.
but all of your history with him flew to the back of your mind as bucky knocked on your office door.
“come in,” you replied hesitantly, not sure what he wanted from you for the first time since your wedding. he stepped through the threshold and stood at the doorframe.
“there’s a work meeting tomorrow,” his hand remained on the doorknob, so stiff you’d think he might rip it off the precious white wood in seconds. “the men are meeting at the house. i wanted to let you know. the men in this business, they expect marriages to be of the… traditional values.”
you nodded with understanding, turning to face him with a forced grin. “so i should play the part of the doting housewife, huh?” no smile in return, so you bit back your humor in turn for matching his serious tone. “what food should i prepare, then? and uh, how many guests will we be expecting?”
“whatever’s easiest for you,” he shrugged lightly. “there will be 9 of us there.” with one final look in your direction, he left the office and didn’t return to say goodnight.
-
the next morning you got to work setting the house up for the 6pm meeting your loving husband was hosting.
you had decided to set up a buffet-style table outside of the main dining room where the meeting would take place. for the menu, you settled on simple grilled chicken with quite a few side options. roast potatoes, asparagus, sauteed carrots, green beans, and rolls.
you were putting the rolls in the oven when bucky got home, seemingly entranced by the smell of all the food, heading straight to the kitchen.
“it smells amazing in here,” bucky called from the archway of the kitchen. you jumped slightly from the surprise, but swallowed down the shock and another weak smile.
“thanks,” you nodded to the edge of the island where a large chalkboard sat, your handwriting neatly displayed on the board that listed all the food to be had. “the menu. i figured a variety would be nice, and who doesn’t like chicken, right?”
“vegetarians,” if you didn’t know any better, you’d think he was telling a joke. but you knew better than that. “the men are coming in a little less than an hour. do you maybe want to change before they get here?”
you looked down at what you were wearing, a pair of blue jeans and a loose t-shirt clearly not worthy of someone who had married a barnes man. “right, of course. i’m sorry,” you finished setting the timer on the oven and ran upstairs to get yourself put together before bucky saw the tears trying to seep past your waterline.
you settled on a black cocktail dress you had worn to one of your dad’s company events before the downfall… quickly swiping some makeup on to cover the exhaustion in your eyes and pulling your hair up to a more respectable updo rather than your typical messy bun.
luckily you had become an expert at quickly getting ready from your time in university, as you were back in time to pull the rolls from the oven, but not before pulling on your apron. you’d be dammed if you got this stunning dress dirty right before this prestigious meeting.
t-5 minutes before the meeting was supposed to begin and you could already hear lots of rustling from the formal dining room. you knocked on the closed doors before bucky opened the door for you.
the men went silent as their gaze rested on you in the doorway.
“the foods ready. buffet style?” your eyes didn’t leave bucky’s pretty blues, too scared to do anything wrong in front of his men.
“that’s perfect, my love,” his hands gravitated to your waist before pulling your body taut against his, one hand moving a stray hair behind your ear before leaning in to whisper. “you look ravishing…”
as he pulled back, you were sure your blush was evident across your cheeks. you tried to hide it behind a smile, shrugging with a shy ‘thanks’ leaving your lips.
“what do you say to my stunning wife, boys?” his hand squeezed your waist once more before turning to the other men, ‘thank you’s being echoed throughout the room as they stood and made their way to the kitchen to make their plates.
in a matter of minutes, all the food was gone. you figured it was best they liked the food, even if you didn’t get to try any of it yourself like you had planned.
you got started on cleaning everything up with earbuds in your ears, starting with the dishes already in the sink from when you were cooking. then, you were sure to place the dishes that the food was in inside the sink for you to clean before starting on wiping the counters, then sweeping, then mopping, and then back to the dishes.
you didn’t realize that bucky had called for a break in the meeting, however. you were in for quite the rude awakening when you felt a pair of hands on your waist, but not the ones you were semi-familiar with.
you turned around with a gasp, shock evident on your face as you tried to piece together whoever this man was. blond hair, blue eyes… definitely not steve though. you knew steve well and had seen him often.
you pulled your earbuds from your ears in attempt to better understand what was going on. his hands were still gripping your sides, but you couldn’t necessarily escape his touch. you were backed against the sink. even if you could fight him, you’d likely lose to his strong grip.
“is the meeting-is it over already?” your voice was so much more cowardly than you’d ever expected yourself to be.
“no, no,” he shook his head. “just a little break, some of the guys were getting antsy.” you leaned back further, trying to create some semblance of space between you. “i figured i’d say a special thank you, on behalf of all of us guys in there.” he let one hand cup the side of your face and neck, his other hand trailing down from your waist, firmly grasping your ass with a sqeeze before you jumped at the invasion.
“i don’t-i’ve got it…”
“john,” he smiled grossly, as if he could convince you to go to bed with him.
“no need for a thanks,” you tried to remind him. “i did this for bucky. for my husband.” your eyebrows rose, trying to emphasize that his boss was also your husband.
“i’m sure he won’t mind you getting a little bit of extra special attention, don’t you?”
then, a growling voice cut through the fear running through your veins.
“i think he might mind.”
you turned to face bucky with wide eyes before facing john, wishing the tears welling in your eyes would just go away.
his hands slowly retracted, stepping back with a chuckle.
“sorry, sir,” he smiled before turning to face your husband. “she was just telling me how she wanted some extra attention, weren’t you, toots?” he tilted his head expectantly.
your mouth opened, nothing leaving in spite of your brain screaming at you. what would bucky do? would he take his side? would he believe you? would he hurt you?
you’ve embarrassed him now… humiliated him in his own home. surely he’ll take action against you for this.
your mind replayed stories your old friends had told you about him. how he would lash out at men that betrayed him. how he never took shit from anyone who showed him any disrespect. how he was the kind of man to shoot first and ask quesitons later.
and now, in a way, you’ve both betrayed and disrespected him. or at least, that’s what he’ll think.
you didn’t even realize tears were flowing down your face until your sobs were interrupted.
“enough!” you finally looked at bucky before his eyes softened for a second before walking closer to you. “go to the room.” he ordered sternly.
“but the dish-”
“i’ll take care of it,” he interrupted gravely, “go. to. the. room.”
“yes, sir,” you nodded and swiftly left the room entirely, collapsing against the door once you had shut it, sobs wracking your body. you held your knees against your chest before trying to regulate your breathing.
he won’t hurt you.
he has to protect his image.
you’ve embarrassed him.
you’re his wife.
you’re his business deal.
you’ve humiliated him.
he’ll hurt you.
you didn’t know how long it had been since the incident.
your sobs had subsided. you had, at some point, moved to your bed. you were still rocking your body back and forth, trying to self sooth.
and then there was a knock at the door.
your body instinctively jumped at the sudden noise, although it wasn’t harsh in any manner, at least not one that you were expecting.
he twisted the knob, slowly opening the door with slow movements.
“i-i’m so sorry,” you began apologizing as soon as he stepped through the threshold into your room. “i swear-i swear i didn’t tell him that. i didn’t even realize he was there, i promise. i wouldn’t lie to you. i’m so sorry, i’m so sorry. please believe me.” your body was still rocking and you didn’t even notice he was as close to you as he was until you saw his hand moving by your head.
automatically, you assumed the absolute worst, your head ducking into your body like a fucking turtle, the meekest squeal leaving your lips mixed with a sob. your arms went over your head protectively, as if a bomb were about to go off.
“sweetheart,” his voice sounded so broken, so torn, so unexpectedly soft.
you finally looked at him for the first time since he came in your room. his flesh hand was holding his metal one as if it were something that could kill. in ways, it was.
“you-there’s no need to…” after looking at him for a second longer, you noticed that his eyes had tears that almost mirrored your own. “i would never, ever lay a hand on you. i’m so sorry for scaring you. i can’t…” he sighed. “i can’t believe i made you believe i’d ever hurt you.”
“i’m sorry,” you pleaded with him once again.
“you have nothing to apologize for,” he hesitated to reach for your hands before settling on simply grabbing a spare pillow. “i came up here to apologize. for my tone earlier… i know john. he never knows his boundaries. i should’ve… you never should’ve been put in that situation. that’s my fault. that’s on me. and i will spend the rest of forever to make it up to you.”
“you don’t have to-”
“no, my love,” he shook his head. “can i-can i hold your hands? please?” you, without hesitation, grabbed his hands yourself. “i need to make it up to you. you’re mine. you’re my wife. it’s my job to protect you, to keep you safe. and to have someone ruin that? to touch what’s mine in my own home? i’m so sorry.” he brought your hands to his lips, pressing at least ten kisses to each hand. he was so gentle and careful it was a good thing you knew better than to think it actually meant anything.
you were surprised, to say the least, at how tender he was being with you.
how could you have ever thought he would hurt you? that he would raise his hand and swing? that he would cause you harm? he was here declaring that he would make up this incident for the rest of eternity when it wasn’t even his doing…
“will you stay with me tonight?” his eyes lit up at the request.
“are you sure you want that?” he became a touch more reserved. “i don’t know if it’s a good idea since you were worried i would…” his voice trailed off.
“i’m sure,” you nodded before scooting over in the bed.
sure, your marriage was arranged and didn’t stem from true love. you may not have talked outside of when absolutely necessary. you might have even been terrified of him at one point.
but now, the thought of forever with bucky barnes didn’t seem half bad.

re: ohio chemical disaster
OP of the post I reblogged earlier regarding this turned off reblogs (understandable have a nice day) but I got a request to put the information in its own post, so here.
First thing: PLEASE be careful about claims that "The Media" is suppressing something as part of a malicious agenda, or that an event has been purposefully manufactured by "The Media" to distract from something else.
Not only is this a really common disinformation tactic (not only urging you to share/reblog quickly, but discouraging you from fact checking), treating "The Media" as a monolithic entity with purposeful agency and a specific, malicious agenda—particularly one that manufactures events to "distract" from other events—is a red flag for conspiracy theories.
There's already a post in the tag attributing the supposed lack of media coverage to "reptilians." Please connect the dots here.
Second—"the news isn't focusing on this as much as I think they should" is not a media blackout. Every major USA news source is reporting on the Ohio train derailment. Googling returns at least 4 pages of results from major news media sources. Even just googling "Ohio" gets you plenty of results about it.
This is an unusual amount of media attention for a U.S. environmental disaster.
Because this kind of thing happens all the damn time.
The "media blackout" narrative gives the impression that this is an unusual event that isn't receiving wall to wall coverage only because it's being suppressed—when the reality is that similar disasters happen a lot, and hardly ever get the attention the Ohio disaster is getting.
Consider this example, not too far from my local area: A few years ago, almost 2,000 tons of radioactive fracking waste were illegally dumped in an Eastern Kentucky municipal landfill, directly across from a middle school. Leachate from that landfill goes into the Kentucky River, which is where most of the central part of the state gets its drinking water. As far as we know, the radioactive waste isn't leaking yet, but it could start leaking at any time.
Zero national news sources covered this. Why? If I was to hazard a guess, I would say "because it's business as usual for the fossil fuel industry."
Consider also the case of Martin County, KY, which has had foul-smelling, contaminated drinking water for decades. Former coal country in Appalachia is poisoned and toxic, and laws have little power to punish the companies that created the destruction.
What happened in Ohio is just a little window into a whole world of horrors.
The Martin County coal slurry spill that is still poisoning the water 20 years later killed literally everything in the water for miles downstream (a book Mom read said 70 miles of the Ohio river were made completely lifeless). It was 30 times larger than the Exxon-Valdez oil spill, and it was in some sense "covered up"—in the sense that the Bush administration shut down the investigation because the Republicans are buddies with the fossil fuel industry, and proceeded to relax regulations even further.
Seriously, read that wiki article to get pissed enough to eat glass.
Hopefully the Ohio chemical spill will inspire real action to institute regulations to prevent shit like this from ever happening again. It's not the end of the world. It's not radically different from what industries have been causing the whole damn time. It is pretty bad.
I would urge everyone to actually search up information about it instead of getting news from Tiktok or Twitter, because the more false information gets distributed, the less momentum any effort to respond with improved regulations and changes to prevent future disasters will have. Plenty of facts here *are* public and being publicly discussed and pretending that they're not is actively detrimental.

On Writing Combat and Sex Scenes
Today I want to talk about writing sex and combat (and no, I do not mean combative sex). This post is inspired by a few recent events:
Once, a long time ago, I read a blog post that said “if you can write a combat scene, you can write a sex scene” and that was mind-blowing for me because while I was well-versed in writing erotica, I couldn’t write combat to save my life.
More recently, at Boskone, I participated on a panel about writing combat, and the research involved there-in.
Even more recently, I had someone look at me say, “You’re not a gay guy. How do you write gay sex scenes?”
So. Let’s begin.
I get it—sex and combat aren’t interchangeable. But at their core, they have some strong similarities which can be leveraged while writing. Both are intense, high drama, and can involve a lot of anxiety and quick thought. Both tend to narrow focus down to the moment and the current feeling and action. Both are heightened emotion and physical reaction. Both can involve actions that lie outside the author’s personal experience.
I started writing erotica when I was a freshman in college. I posted it online (does anyone remember rec.arts.erotica?) and was surprised (and pleased) by the compliments I received. Turned out my readers were not expecting the idea of emotion being entangled in their erotica. They were invested emotionally in how the stories went, and how my characters felt. Since I was writing from the point of view that made sense to me at the time, they were het stories from a female perspective, and they were very focused on the emotional connections and how the physical events heightened those emotions.
Male readers were surprised by the intensity of the feelings that these stories gave them (as opposed to pure arousal). It got me thinking about how I wrote, and why I wrote, and I tried to talk about it some at the time. I was eighteen. I was still a new writer. The internet itself was new. I wasn’t entirely certain how to frame it, but I remember getting one comment where a guy was surprised at how struck he’d been by the moment in the scene where everything shuddered to a halt due to an event in the story that interrupted the action, and I replied that that was because I wasn’t writing about the sex. I was writing about the character’s reaction to the sex.
Which has always been how I write. At the time, that was my only tool: put myself in the character’s mind, and write what they feel. If that’s affection and attraction and physical reaction, write that. Tangle it up, and hope the reader feels that entanglement.
Now, fast forward several years, and take a little side trip onto a tangent wherein I learned something very important about writing craft.
I was reading Syne Mitchell’s End in Fire, I think it was, and I kept having panic attacks. Now, I did most of my reading late, often when I woke in the middle of the night due to stress, or just because my brain refused to rest. I was in a rough place in life in general, with a lot of external work stuff going on and very small children. I wasn’t sleeping well. And it took me some time to figure out why I was struggling to read a book which I actually loved (and when I read it later in life, I enjoyed it greatly).
It was the sentence structure.
In order to induce the emotion of the scene, the sentences were short. Sharp. Quick. There was no time for the reader to breathe, much like there was no time for the heroine to do anything but act. The reader was caught up in the rising tension, to the point where my anxious, sleep-deprived brain, caught a panic attack from it.
The technique was brilliant.
Now back to our original timeline, wherein I read a post about how if you can write combat, you can write sex scenes. This post assumed that more people felt comfortable writing violence than sex. I was the reverse. I’d been writing about sex for over a decade when I saw this post, and it made a light bulb go off in my brain.
If writing sex was like writing combat… was the reverse also true? Could I improve my skills at writing battles by analyzing what worked when I wrote erotica?
So I tried doing just that. Back then, I found combat overwhelming. There was so much going on, and I was trying so hard to write good description that I lost all of the intensity. I was focusing on everything that was going on at the same time.
Thinking about how sex scenes were all intense emotion and narrowed focus, I applied that to my combat scenes. I wrote only what the point of view character experienced, and tied everything to their actions and reactions. I thought about how they breathed, how they moved, how they thought. I used those short, sharp sentences as they processed the scene.
That doesn’t mean I forgot about everything else going on in the scene. That’s impossible. After all, in any story the things the character doesn’t pay attention to might be as important as the things they do focus on. Stuff still happens, and there is still fallout. I needed to know what else was happening so that if the character moved from one place to another, or did something that put them in the path of a different part of the action, I could have them start processing it.
But it also meant that on the page, out of sight was out of mind. Everything narrowed down to the now. The immediacy. Suddenly my combat scenes snapped into focus.
During the panel at Boskone, all of the panelists had experience with different fighting styles (fencing, street combat, and of course, me with taekwondo). I spoke about how for me, that narrow focus is very real when I spar. I know there are some people who naturally see a move or two ahead while fighting; I don’t. I am stuck in act and react mode. Can I kick them now? Can I attempt a head shot? Oh, no, circle back and away or they’re going to hit me… that’s how my brain works during a sparring match.
It’s not like a total blackout—there should be a vague awareness of things around the character. Sounds in particular, or sometimes flashes of movement. Something distracting can catch the attention of the fighter, but the personal fight will always pull the character back.
Combat feels easy when I’m writing like that.
Of course, there’s still the question of writing about something if I’ve never experienced it. As someone did point out to me: I am not a gay man, so how does that affect writing sex scenes? I’ve also never fought with a sword. Brawled. Fought from horseback. I have, however, held a blade, shot a gun, shot an arrow, rode a horse. I have a vague idea of how these things work, much like I have a working knowledge of sex in general.
So yes, research gets involved. Sometimes research is observational, sometimes it’s reading (there’s so much good stuff out there). I highly recommend video for combat scenes—find things that have the feel that you’re going for, then put yourself in the place of the character you want to write about. Practice. Work through the ideas of how things fit together, and what your character will (and will not!) know during the fight.
If you need to, stand up and block the scene by thinking about how you would experience it. What can you see, and what is out of sight? If someone is coming at you with a blade, what are your options? How do height differences affect you? Yes, I have asked friends and husband to help me block scenes.
“Stand right there and show me what it looks like if you punch me. Okay, so if I do this then…” Yeah. It’s a thing. But it works.
When doing your research, remember that movie fighting (and hell, movie sex scenes) isn’t realistic. It’s meant to look good. For combat, if you can find re-enactments, or sparring videos, I highly recommend taking a look at those.
Anyway, the point is: I don’t have to have shot someone, and I don’t have to have had gay sex in order to write about them. What I do need to know is how it feels emotionally to do those things, and I can extrapolate that from what I do know. I need to know enough about the details so I can get it right, and that’s where research will help me. Also, use language to create emotion. Because emotions are where we grab the reader, and how we pull them into the scene.
Combat and sex aren’t so different when it comes to writing, and the personal experience. Now, go forth and write!

𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚
part 2
Steve is looking around the room when he sees Jay waving at him, so he smiles and waves back. He likes Jay. He’s nice and super fun to beat at cards.
And then he notices there’s someone sitting beside Jay and his hand falters before he puts it down.
The guy looks… tough, all lean and strong and sexy in his leather jacket and ripped jeans. Tattoos, rings, and pierced ears with long curly hair. But his eyes, his big eyes are beautiful and dark and his lips are round and look really soft. He’s all sharp but round around the edges. A walking contradiction. And Steve’s never seen anyone like him before.
Without taking his eyes off him, he moves over to where Chrissy is sitting with Robin and sits with them, takes Chrissy’s hand, and holds it lovingly like he always does.
“Hey, babe,” He whispers to her, “Who’s that guy sitting with Jay?”
“That’s Strider,” Robin says leaning over Chrissy to talk to him, “He’s an old friend of Jay’s, new in town. Why? You like him?”
“Strider…That’s a character from the book Dustin likes, right?” He wonders, “The Hobbit?”
“The Lord of the Rings” Chrissy corrects him.
“Right… nerd” He quips.
“So? Do you? Like him.” Chrissy asks squeezing his hand in retaliation.
“He’s gorgeous,” Steve confirms and Chrissy smiles excitedly. It’s not every day Steve notices someone in the bar. It has never happened before actually.
“You really think so?” Robin murmurs to him, “He looks like he’d like telling you what to do,”
Steve hums appreciatively, “Yes, but like, in a nice way, right? Like he’ll say please and thank you,” he says dreamily.
Robin snorts, “Is that what you are into, you nasty boy?” Steve gasps so hard he almost chokes on his own spit and Robin starts cackling, while Chrissy giggles cutely.
“Fuck off,” He snaps, “And you, don’t laugh you dummy! You are supposed to be the stoic leader here!”
Chrissy sobers up immediately, “Right, right” and then the three of them, look at each other amused trying to hold their laughs in.
Fuck, if anyone heard how silly they were their reputation would be completely ruined.
The phrase ‘fake it til you make it’ never made more sense than it does for them right now.
When the three of them, fresh out of high school moved into the city when Chrissy started showing symptoms… they had absolutely nothing to their name, and now, they owned a fucking bar. They had a roof over their head, food on their tables, and more importantly, they were offering shelter to a lot of people that used to be where they were a couple of years ago.
The lack of information around them made them look mysterious. And Robin had a way with business and marketing. So a couple of well-placed rumors did all the work for them. Just a few lessons on how to make a real bitchy face from Steve and suddenly Chrissy was the scariest girl in the night.
It had been a rough start, and more than once Steve thought they wouldn't make it till the end of the month. But they’d gotten lucky when they found this place and they had been smart about it and now they had responsibilities and a establishment to uphold but that didn’t mean they couldn't have any fun.
“Go talk to him!” Chrissy tells him elbowing him subtly.
Steve shakes his head, “No, no way,”
“Dude, he’s been looking at you since the minute he came in!” Robin insists.
But that doesn't mean as much as she thinks it does. That doesn’t make it safe for him. Still, he kind of wants to talk to him, to hear his voice, to know what he’s like and what he likes and what not. And just when Steve is actually considering it Mayra, one of their hostess, walks up to Strider.
Robin frowns, “Oh, fuck off Mayra” she mutters and Steve has to stifle a loud snort.
“Oh well, lost my chance I guess,” He says unbothered but actually feels really upset about it. He’s never felt jealous of any of the girl's conquests before. It’s strange, but there’s something about that guy.
He wanted him for himself. He needs him.
“Bet you a burger that if you go there right now, he’ll choose you over her” Chrissy says studying his expression like she can see right through him.
“I’m not gonna cock block Mayra for a burger” He smiles at her shaking his head.
“Oh! No need! He rejected her!” Robin tells them excitedly.
And then they both stare at him,
“What are you waiting for?!”
“Well then, go on!”
They talk at the same time.
“I- Ok! Fine. But if he rejects me you are buying me that burger,” He says standing up.
“If he rejects you I’ll buy you burgers for the whole week!” Chrissy whispers-yells at him as he’s making his way there.
He sees Jay walking up and leaving Strider alone at the little table and makes a note to thank him later as he sits beside Strider and puts his elbows on the table, using his hands to rest his chin over and looking at him.
“Hi”
Strider blinks at him a couple of times and visibly swallows, “Hi,”
Steve just leans his head to one side and smiles at him, and Strider just looks at him for a long second before smiling back crookedly, a dimple appearing on his left cheek that makes Steve want to bite him.
“I’m Ee-Strider,”
Steve’s smile becomes something a little more genuine and less flirty, he seems so nice, his strider, “Hi, Strider”
“And you are Sunshine, right?” Strider asks leaning a little closer over the table.
Steve bites his lip before answering. He was never particularly fond of that nickname, it’s too much to live up to. But he really likes the way it sounds coming from Strider.
“That’s what they call me, yes” he answers smirking confidently.
‘Fake it Till you Make It’
“So, Strider, What brings you here tonight?”
Once more Strider just looks at him intently, looks at his lips, and then shakes his head, looking around feigning casualness, “Oh, you know, just checking out the scene”
He muffles a giggle over his own shoulder and then leans his head to look at Strider sideways, exposing the line of his neck, “And how are you finding it?” he asks softly.
“Oh, it’s really neck so f- nice really nice… So far” Strider stumbles over his words and then cringes to himself and blushes faintly.
And Steve gets suddenly really fucking impatient. He needs this cute dork upstairs, naked and under him right now.
“Has anyone explained to you how things work around here?” He asks him, trying to move the conversation along.
Strider nods, “Je-Jay explained to me the gist of it, yeah”
“Oh, yeah?” Steve nods too and puts his chin on his hands again, fawning his eyelashes at him and waiting for him to elaborate.
“Well, you choose right?” Strider continues and gestures vaguely around the room referring to the hostesses, “And then you take us upstairs…”
“Mmhm” Steve hums encouraging him to keep talking, “And then?”
“And then I get to taste you,” Strider breathes and fuck.
Taste him? Taste him. Yes. He wants that. He wants that so much.
“Taste me?” He asks because the concept still sounds too good to be true.
“Right?” Strider asks like he’s not sure the said the right thing.
‘Oh, he has no idea how right he was’
Steve leans over the table and stops just an inch away from Strider’s face, almost going eye crossed to look at him, “Would you like that, Strider?” he asks and then moves closer and to the side to whisper in his ear,
“Do you want to taste me?”
“God. Fuck, yes. Please?” Strider says in a rushed whisper and Steve tries his best not to shiver.
He stands up and offers up a hand to him, “Follow me.”

Tumblr media
summery: a dinner with your girlfriends coworkers goes wrong 📞
warnings: angst, fluffy ending
notes: i love them sm:(
Tumblr media
a few years ago your family had decided to go on a trip to new york, during that trip you met two girls who at the time you didn't know would absolutely change your life . for the three months you were in new york you saw them every day, you would go to their houses or go downtown with them, they'd take you shopping or bring you to fancy restaurants
now years later you lived in an apartment with them, when you met them you didn't know but they were both daughters of two rich and famous business men, Jerry Anderson a brain surgeon and Joel Miller a lawyer, meaning they had a lot of money . they bought a two floor flat just for you, just so you could stay with them
'we're going out to dinner tonight with a couple of our coworkers okay?' ellie said as she typed away on her computer, you sat on your shared bed scrolling on your phone, abby was beside you reading a book, her glasses on the tip of her nose . 'yeah okay' you mumbled, the truth is you didn't want to go, their coworkers always were mean to you, making jokes about how you were just a gold digger
the afternoon went on and soon enough it was time for dinner, once you arrived at the restaurant you sat down in the chair in-between them, ellie put her hand on your thigh, stroking it, everyone was talking except you, you didn't actually know any of the people there so you couldn't make any conversation, as you sat in the uncomfortable chair . you heard someone make a rude joke about how'd you'd leave your girlfriends if they're sales went down
the man laughed at his own joke as ellie and abby sat there in shock, you felt tears start to well up in your eyes and you quickly excused yourself from the table, you walked into the bathroom and locked yourself in, you didn't understand why they were so mean, was it because you were younger? you didn't know or care, all you wanted was some respect from them
you flinched as you heard a knock on the door, 'occupied' you shouted, 'baby open up it's us' you heard abby's voice, you sniffled and unlocked the door, they both came in and shut the door behind them, abby pulled you into a tight hug, wrapping her arms around you, ellie hugged you from behind, kissing your neck, a couple seconds later they both pulled away
abby cupped your cheek and pressed a gentle kiss against your lips . ellie snaked her arms around your waist and rested her head in your shoulder, 'you know we love you right?' abby whispered, you nodded and mumbled a quiet 'yeah', 'don't listen to what they say, we know you would never do that' ellie chimed in from behind you
she gave your neck once last kiss before abby opened the door, you all walked out of a the bathroom and went back the the table, you almost sat back down but you saw abby and Ellie take they're jackets from the chairs, 'we're heading out' abby announced, the man that made the cruel joke laughed, ellie rolled her eyes as she slipped her jacket on, 'shut the fuck up oh my god' she grabbed her bag and started to walk out the door
you and abby follwed her out, you got to the car and abby opened the back door for you, you put on your seatbelt as ellie started the car, abby sat in the passengers seat, she turned around to look at you, 'are you okay' she questioned, you nodded your head, 'yeah I just wanna sleep'
once you got home you took off your shoes and they did too, you all changed into some more comfortable clothes and laid in bed, you were comfortably sandwiched in the middle of them . 'i love you guys' you sleepily mumbled, they chuckled and abby stroked your back, 'we love you too angel' she said
you soon fell asleep, completely forgetting about the previous events of that night

I know it's been said before, but I feel like Katniss gets compared to Lucy Gray a lot because they're both victors from 12 and both women, but its actually Sejanus that she's really similar to. Side note- forgive me if i get a few things wrong, I just saw the new movie and re-watched all the old ones but I haven't read the books in a while.
We see Sejanus thrust into a world he doesn't feel like he belongs to, and we can assume he wasn't a revolutionary until he was directly faced with the horrors of the capital where he became one of the only people willing to speak up. On the other hand, years later, we see Katniss willing to do her own thing and not be involved until the games directly involve her and suddenly she's fighting like hell against the capital specifically, not the other tributes.
The funny thing about them is that the only thing they have going for them, or their cause, is their passion. Neither of them are charismatic, neither of them are particularly likeable or make good impressions. They're brusque, disconnected, determined and absolutely unwilling to play a part, no matter how it may alter the outcome. How other people view them matters very little and they operate on a one track mind. Sejanus made a statement to the game makers and honored a friend when he broke into the arena for Marcus, filled with grief and only half thinking. Katniss did the same when she covered Rue with flowers and when she hanged the dummy of Seneca Crane. Both are calculated but are shortsighted when it comes to their actions. They're sensitive and caring but it's not an immediately obvious character trait, and not something that they're generally known for.
They both just wanted there to be peace, they wanted there to be change, but they didn't want to be the ones to have to do it, unable to handle that kind of weight on their shoulders, and unable to put on an act. Katniss was ready to run from the fight as long as she had the people she loved with her and they were taken care of. Towards the end, all she wanted was for her and Peeta and her family to be safe and away from the fighting. Sejanus tried to help a group of people run away, and tried to run with them, and away from the mess Panem was becoming. He didn't want to be in the middle of it anymore, and as long as he could help a few less fortunate than himself and be away, he was okay. Both of them have break downs on several occasions when their quick actions of what they thought was kindness have consequences they NEVER wanted for anybody (after Katniss speaks in 11 or when Sejanus accidentally gets the rebels in 12 weapons).
Snow was definitely triggered by Katniss because she sang Lucy Gray's song. But he was probably fascinated and enraged by her at the start when she, and her lover boy(artist, performer, lover of people, Lucy Gray) START the games unconventionally -together- and Katniss is passionate, and she's calculated and at the same time so so so impulsive and myopic, and she reminds him of someone. Somebody he betrayed a lifetime ago but that betrayal was his tipping point of NEVER coming back to ANY good he had left in him. And she cries for tributes she knew for a day, and she can't act, even if her life depended on it (and it does), and she lashes out without forethought creating another mess Snow has to clean up, and he can't get a handle of her, and she's a disaster, and all he can think is Sejanus, Sejanus, Sejanus while he tries to control her more and everything spins out farther than he could've imagined.
Sejanus trusted Snow, and Snow outsmarted him, and in the end it was Sejanus's traits he went up against, and he underestimated her and he lost everything for it.
Me and @diamondsunbursts-and-marblehalls have been breaking down all the characters and their connections so thank you to them for helping me flesh this out.

Save A Dance - Max Verstappen
Tumblr media
<word count - 8825>
You sat in your Monganesque apartment, gazing out of the floor-to-ceiling windows that had first caught your eye when Max brought you to the apartment. It was nice to have some quiet time, since, when you weren't working, you were taking care of Aleta.
She went to daycare from Monday to Friday, and that gave you chance to work from home. Christian had allowed you to do that since you had moved to Monaco, since your job allowed you to do so.
All you had to do was come up with ideas, schedule them, let the PR team know when and where they were going to be, and sign off on the final product. Even if it sounded like a lot, it got easier as time went on.
Now, it was the first Saturday of the summer break and you had been left to have a day by yourself. Max had taken Aleta to play with Nico's daughter for a few hours since they were a similar age. Max and Nico weren't overly close, but they had been getting more friendly because of their daughters.
You started the day off by sleeping in for a few more hours, and you felt nice and lively because of it. You had taken your time getting out of bed, bringing your breakfast back to bed with you and watching TV.
Looking around the room, you remembered waking up to Max crouched down beside you and telling you he had made dinner those few years ago. That exact pasta dish had become a family favourite and Aleta always asked for it when Max made dinner.
Then, you had lightly cleaned around the house, before settling on the couch for a few hours reading a book. After a while, you put the book down and your eyes stared out of the windows and down at the marina.
The view got better each time you looked at it, and the sight of the sun glittering on the blue waters was mesmerizing. It relaxed you slightly, since the seconds ticked down until Max got home.
You weren't able to keep the news from Max any longer and you looked forward to the priceless look on his face when you told him. The last time someone had heard, your heart was shattered. But now, you knew you were going to make him the happiest man in the world.
As if by magic, the elevator doors dinged open and closed, and you heard the footsteps of your three (nearly four) year old daughter padding across the floor behind you. "Mama!" she shrieked, hopping on the couch next to you and crawling into your lap.
"Hey, sweetheart. How was your day?" you asked, watching the grin on your daughters face. From behind, Max kissed your head and wrapped his arms around your shoulders. Aleta told you about the ice cream they went to get, and the games she played with Nico's daughter.
She skipped away to her room for a bit before dinner, and Max came to sit down next to you. "How was your day, liefde?" he asked, gently pulling you into his side.
"Very quiet and relaxing. How was Nico?" you asked, since you hadn't spoken to the driver in a while. "Yeah, he's good. She had a great time," he smiled.
You stood, wiggling out of Max's grip. "Where are you going?" he asked, as you closed the door to the hallway so that you'd know if Aleta was coming. "I need to talk to you," you said, sitting back down next to him and turning to face him.
"You alright?" he asked, placing a comforting hand on your thigh.
"Yeah, I'm great, actually," you nodded, unable to contain yourself any longer, "I guess I just wanted to ask if you're willing to build another crib?" you asked, watching as the penny dropped in his head.
His eyes opened in surprise as his mouth fell agape. "You- You're- Really?" he asked, trying to contain himself from jumping off the couch and leaping in the air out of pure elation. "You're pregnant?" he asked.
"Yeah," you nodded, watching as a huge, goofy smile spread across his face and his eyes lit up. He leapt off the couch and tugged you up with him, wrapping you into the biggest hug. "I'm going to be a dad, again!" he exclaimed, wanting to run down the street, yelling that his wife was having another baby.
"Thank you so much," he mumbled into your hair, the feeling of pure joy and happiness filling his veins. This was how he felt when Aleta was born, and it didn't compare to anything else in the world. "Can I tell Aleta?" he asked, squirming to go and get her.
"Of course you can, darling," you smiled. Having someone so happy to be having a child with you was something you so sorely missed out on when Scott found out about Aleta. Max was overjoyed and you knew he would be there through every step of the way.
Raising Aleta with Max was wonderful, and you knew that you were going to raise another brilliant little person with him. Max went to Aleta's room and came out with her on his hip. "Schatje, Mommy and I need to talk to you," he said, sitting back down and setting her down on his lap.
"Okay," she said, looking at you in confusion.
"You're going to be a big sister," he said, and the little girl just looked even more confused. Her blonde eyebrows knitted together in perplexion, and you could see the cogs turning in her brain. "Where is the baby?" she asked Max, looking up at him with her big blue eyes.
"Right there, in Mommy's tummy," he told her, pointing to your stomach. Aleta leant over and pointed her finger next to Max's. "But how does it fit?"
You and Max couldn't help but giggle at her question, and she seemed really interested. "The baby is really small at the moment, but it's going to grow and grow until they're ready to come and see you," you explained, and she nodded.
"I'm going to be the best big sister ever!" she giggled, bouncing on Max's knee. "I'll show her how to use the swings, how to braid her hair, how to make cookies," she rambled, and Max's heart was melting at how excited she was at having a little sibling.
"You might be getting a little brother, Leta," you smiled, watching as her face dropped.
"Ew no!" she scoffed, her face contorting into disgust. You laughed and Max looked offended. You knew he loved having his girls and taking care of you, but he definitely wanted a son as well. He had taken Aleta karting, but she was too young to enjoy it and had already said she wasn't really interested in being like daddy.
He wouldn't force any of his children into racing, but maybe his son would take more influence from his father and want to try it. Plus, Aleta had said that if she ever did race, it would be for Ferrari since Uncle Charlie had given her the Ferrari Barbie for her birthday.
You had wanted to steal it off of her, since it was completely unopened and a vintage that he had found and probably paid way more than he should have for it. When she was momentarily distracted with the custom Red Bull Barbie Max had gotten her, you had put it on the top shelf so that she couldn't reach it.
As much as she was her father's daughter, she couldn't help but cheer for Uncle Charlie when racing, even if she was sat in the Red Bull garage when watching.
When you told everyone about the newest addition, they were overjoyed and all offered to take Aleta out if you guys needed a moment. Aleta always made an impression everywhere you went, and everyone loved her. "Do you not want a little brother?" Max asked.
"No Daddy, I don't," she scoffed, almost offended that he would ask such a question. Max had his perfect family right in front of him, and he didn't think he would be able to wait for nearly seven months to meet his new bundle of joy.
"Max, it hurts," you whined, sitting on the bed rubbing your swollen stomach. You were a lot bigger than you were when you were pregnant with Aleta, and you were having a much harder time than you were with Aleta.
"I know, liefde, I know," he said. Max had been an absolute trooper over these past couple of days. He was pretty much taking full care of Aleta and you, since you had been having Braxton Hicks contractions on and off.
It was late, and since you weren't sleeping, neither was he. He took a seat next to you on the edge of the bed, his hand soothingly trailing up and down your back. "Is there anything I can do?" he asked, his heart breaking to see you in that much pain.
You just shook your head as a few tears slipped down your flushed cheeks. "You should go to bed, you've got an early start tomorrow," you told him, not wanting him to be tired for training tomorrow. "As long as you're awake, so am I," he smiled, wanting to take on the pain for you.
"Max, you should really go to bed. I'll be fine," you said.
"Hey, look at me," he sighed, and you could feel his eyes burning holes into the side of your face as he stared at you. You didn't want to look at him, you felt bad. "Y/N, look at me," he said, less softly this time.
Huffing to himself, he shifted off of the bed and crouched down in front of you, placing his hands on your thighs. "You are having our baby. Another stunning member to our family. It kills me that there is nothing I can do to help you, so the least I can do is stay with you when you need me," he told you, his hand reaching up to wipe away some of the stray tears off your cheeks.
"I think I'm going to have a shower, then I'm going to try and get back to sleep," you told him, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his forehead. You were so grateful that he was there, and you could never repay him for what he was doing.
Out of the corner of your eye, you spotted a small, pink object appear in the door. "Hey, Leta," you said, alerting Max to her presence.
"Are you OK, schatje?" Max asked, moving to kneel down in front of Aleta.
"I had a nightmare," she quietly mumbled, and you could tell she had been crying.
"OK, let's get you back to bed," Max said, picking her up and walking out of the room with her. While he was gone, you started running the shower and setting a towel out.
Meanwhile, Max had tucked Aleta back into bed and was just about to leave the room and head back to you. "Daddy?" her small voice said.
"Yeah?" Max replied, honestly wanting her to just go to sleep so that he could help you out.
"Is Mommy OK?" she asked. She had seen you, sitting on the bed crying while Max tried to console you, and tonight wasn't the first time. "She's fine, Leta. Just struggling with your baby brother or sister," he explained.
"Tell them to stop it," she sternly said, and he could tell she meant it.
"I will, schatje, I will," he smiled, closing the door behind him and he jogged down the hall to your room. You weren't there, and he could hear the shower running in the bathroom.
When he walked in, you had your back to him and you let the warm water soothe you. It may have only been slightly, but it still helped. As Max undressed, he heard a sharp intake of breath and saw a sudden movement out of the corner of his eye as another false contraction ripped through you.
You held yourself up with one arm on the wall as you closed your eyes and tried to wait for the pain to pass. "I'm sorry, liefde, I'm sorry," he said, scrambling into the shower with you. Max ran his fingers up and down your spine, trying to figure out what he could do to help.
"It's not your fault," you weakly smiled as the pain subsided.
"It pretty much is," he smirked, earning a small giggle from you. Pushing yourself off the wall, Max wrapped his arms around your waist and let his hand gently rub over your stomach. Peppering a few kisses down your neck, the pair of you just stood there, the water washing over you.
After a while, Max stepped out of the stream of water and grabbed a towel out of the cabinet. As you stepped out, he wrapped it around you and let you dry yourself off. Max left to get some clean clothes, but you had something you needed to say to him right now.
"Max?" you called.
"You alright?" he asked, and he appeared in front of you in a flash.
"Thank you," you said, placing your hands on his shoulders and pecking him on the cheek.
"For what?" he asked, resting his hands on your waist.
"For being here," you said, as if it were an obvious fact to thank him for. If anything, he was saddened by the fact that you felt you needed to thank him for being here.
"There's nowhere else I would rather be than here, with my children, and the woman who makes me the happiest man in the world. You have given me the gift of our two gorgeous babies, the least thing I can do is help you," he smiled, grabbing your hand and taking you through to your room.
Finally, you could both get into bed and go to sleep, ready for the days ahead.
"Leta, you are going to have such a good time," you tried to convince the now five year old Leta that she would enjoy her first day at school. Max wasn't there, and that was definitely playing on her mind. He was at a race this week, and he felt absolutely awful that he couldn't hold her hand as he walked through the door.
"I don't want to go, Mommy," she said, snuggling into your legs. You knelt down to look at her, all smart in her uniform. "Sweetheart, if you go in there and try your absolute best, we can go for ice-cream, alright?" you said. You knew the bribery of ice cream would make her try, and that was exactly what happened.
You walked her in, leaving her with her teacher. She walked in there smiling, and that was all that mattered to you. Now, you had some more time to yourself to work.
It was getting harder and harder to think of something for them to do, since they had already done everything. So, you would be making them do a classic Australian BBQ at the Australian GP. It would be fun to see, and Daniel hosting would always lend to some good content.
Just as you had taken your lunch break, your phone started ringing. Max's name flashed across the top of the screen, and you couldn't wait to talk to him. "Hey," you said, hearing people in the background. "Hey, liefde," Max chirped, "How's your day been?" he asked.
Yes, he did care about how your day was going, but he was really asking how Aleta's first day had gone. "Pretty standard, to be honest. Aleta wasn't too happy to go, but I said if she went and gave it her own, I'd take her and Ruben for ice cream," you told him.
"I'm so sorry I'm not there," he said, sighing.
"Max, don't be. These things happen, and she gets that Daddy can't always be there," you explained.
"I know, but I wish I was there," he whined.
"So do I, but you'll get to talk to her later," you said, and you could hear voices in the background. "Charles, one minute," you heard Max whisper-shout, and you couldn't help but giggle. "Charles wants to talk to you, is that alright?" he asked.
"Of course," you said, listening as the phone was passed over to the man from Monaco.
"Hey, Y/N! How was my darling niece's first day?" he asked. As much as Max hated to admit it, Charles was pretty much Aleta's favourite one of her inherited uncles. Max's dislike was purely because he was a Ferrari driver - at least Daniel was still in the Red Bull family.
"It was good, I promised her I'd take her for ice cream later," you told him.
"Well, tell her Uncle Charlie loves her and is very proud of her. Oh, and tell her we'll have to go for one of our special lunches when I get back," he said. You smiled to yourself. You had so many brilliant people around you who loved you and your children and who filled their lives with happiness and positivity.
"Is Ruben there or is he out?" he asked. Recently, it had been a war between Max and Charles to see which team your son would support. Currently, Ruben just went along with whatever Max said, but he had been following more in Aleta's footsteps with being a Ferrari girl.
"He's at daycare,"
"Well then tell him we'll go for a boys day out also when I get back. I'll even let him touch the steering wheel of the Spider," he said. Yes, Max took him driving, but Uncle Charlie's Ferrari was his favourite. "You spoil them, Charles," you laughed.
"Of course I do, they are my precious niece and nephew, they deserve to be spoiled," he scoffed, as if you didn't think your children deserved to be spoiled. "They are spoiled enough at home," you said, not wanting your children to become prima donnas.
"I'm sure a day out with their favourite Uncle isn't any harm," Charles said, and you could hear people bickering in the background. "Not a chance you are their favourite, Charles," you heard what sounded like Daniel yell. "Come on, Uncle Carlito is their favourite," Carlos argued.
"Where the hell are you all?" you asked, knowing that they weren't all always together.
"We're waiting for the interviewer to get here," Charles explained, the battle of the Uncles continuing in the background. "Max wants the phone back, so I'll let you go. See you soon, Y/N, tell the kids I love them!" he said, as Max wrestled the phone away from him.
"Listen, liefde, I'm going to have to go. Charles has started a full blown civil war in here," he laughed and you could hear the arguments ensuing. "Ruben may get to touch the wheel of your Ferrari, but Aleta gets to drive my tractor when she's at mine," Daniel argued. You always wondered where he took her when she was in Australia.
"Sorry, she what?" Max asked over the noise, and you thought it would be best to let him go.
"Max, I will talk to you later," you laughed, putting the phone down. You smirked to yourself as you thought about how much better off you actually were without Scott. If you didn't have Max, Aleta and Ruben wouldn't be growing up with that many people who love them and treasure them.
You wouldn't change your entire family (even all of the self proclaimed favourite uncles) for the world, and Scott leaving was a blessing in disguise.
"Leta, what flavour do you want?" You asked as you stood at the counter of your favourite ice-cream place in Monaco. "Can I get a chocolate sundae?" she asked, batting her thick eye lashes at you. "Just because you've done so well," you agreed as she clapped in excitement.
Holding her hand was Ruben, who was a literal spitting image of Max. Aleta obviously looked more like you, but Ruben was Max's son. He was so much like him as well, even if he was only young.
You ordered the ice cream and took a seat in one of the booths. "So, Leta, tell me about what you did today," you said.
"I did some colouring, and they have the coolest sandpit!" she gushed, her eyes lighting up at how good of a time she had had. "Did you make any friends?"
"Bella's Daddy really likes racing cars, and I told her about my Daddy's job and she said it was really cool!" she said, and something about Bella felt really good to you inside. "Me and Bella played in the sandpit," she said, and you already knew she had found a friend.
"I've got the chocolate sundae?" the waitress said, and Aleta excitedly put her hand up and the girl placed the sundae in front of her. There was no chance she was going to finish it herself, so you were ready and waiting for your turn.
"And a vanilla milkshake?" she asked, and Ruben just started smiling at her. She placed it down and he started sucking at the straw. "Leta, smile for Daddy," you said, taking your phone out of your pocket and snapping a picture of your daughter with her mammoth of a sundae in front of her.
You also snapped a picture of Ruben slurping away at his milkshake and sent them to Max. 'Waiting for the sugar rush... You're going to have a tough night,' he replied.
'It's nothing I can't handle ;)' you replied, sighing as you saw all of the ice cream and chocolate sauce around Aleta's mouth. As predicted, she was finished around half way through her sundae and you took it off her and cleared it. It was amazing, and you were surprised she had as much as she did.
"Uncle Charlie told me to tell you that he is so proud of you after today and that he loves the both of you," you said, and both of them smiled at the mention of the Monganesque. "He also said you can go for a special lunch when he gets back," you said to Aleta.
"And you can go in the Ferrari," you said to Ruben.
"Ferrari!" he squealed, and that was one of his favourite pastimes.
"Uncle Danny and Uncle Carlito also say hi," you said, and the kids both smiled. You really wondered who they'd say if you told them to pick a favourite.
You took your children home, putting Ruben down for a short nap before dinner since he was tired. Aleta had gone to her room to play for a bit and have some time to herself.
You opened your phone to some texts from Max, and it made you smile as he always did. 'Hey liefde. Was just thinking about you and how brilliant you are. I truly don't know how you manage to be so incredible at everything. Our kids are the luckiest in the world, and I am the luckiest man to have you by my side. I love you and I miss you so so so much. I'll call you later x'.
It was the little things like this that made you love him even more every day. He was perfect in every way, and you missed him so much when he wasn't around.
After dinner, you asked the kids to wait on the couch while you spoke to Max yourself for a bit. "Hey, darling,"
"Hello my love," he said, and you could tell he was tired by the flatness in his voice, but he was happy nonetheless. "How did the civil war end?" you asked.
"Basically, Charles, Daniel and Carlos were all arguing, then Checo decided to stir the pot and get involved. We had to end it by saying that I am their favourite, and Charles even tried to dispute that, but it has been settled. For now," he laughed.
"How's your day been?"
"It's been tiring, and the argument didn't help, but I'm talking to you so it's all good," he said, and you wondered if he could get anymore perfect. "I have been missing you loads today," he pouted, changing the call to a FaceTime.
"What, you don't miss me normally?" you teased, watching as he cringed at himself.
"Of course I do, but I've missed waking up next to you more this week," he said, lying back on his hotel room bed. "Do you want to see the babies?" you asked, and his smile lit up as he zealously nodded.
"Guys, say hi to Daddy," you said, sitting in between Aleta and Ruben.
"Hi Daddy!" Aleta smiled, waving at the camera as Max waved back to them. "Did you see my ice-cream?" she asked.
"I did, and I heard that you were very brave on your first day,"
"I was," she triumphantly stated with all the confidence in the world. "Me and Bella played in the sand pit," she smiled, and you could tell she was buzzing to go back the next day.
"Who's Bella?" Max asked.
"Bella is my new friend. Her Daddy like racing cars and I told her about you and she said you were really cool," she gushed, her voice dripping with admiration for her Dad.
"Well that's good. Are you excited for tomorrow?"
"Yeah," she said as Ruben just stared off into the distance.
"Sweetheart, why don't you go and get your book and start reading before we go to bed?" you said, seeing how both of the children were tired. "I'll let you guys go and I'll talk to you tomorrow," Max said, not really wanting to put the phone down.
"Max, can I call you back in half an hour?" you asked, also not wanting him to go just yet. Max nodded and sat there, waiting for you come back.
After tucking Ruben in, you listened to Aleta read for ten minutes before kissing her goodnight and going back to your bedroom. The phone didn't even ring before Max picked up, his tired face filling the screen.
"What have you got on tomorrow?" you asked, completely forgetting the entire F1 weekend schedule. "Just FP1 and FP2, so nothing too major. I'm going to have lunch with the team as well so we can have a debrief and relax before qualis and everything,"
"That'll be nice," you yawned, rapidly blinking to try and wake yourself up a bit.
"You need to go to bed, liefde," he said, knowing you were pretty much run off your feet with how long your days were. You got the kids ready, dropped them where they needed to be, worked for the day, picked them up and spent the night entertaining them. Then, you were falling asleep as soon as Aleta's light went out.
"I think I will," you agreed.
"Are you sure it's not too much?" he asked. He had offered to get you a nanny or a maid to assist with some of the things that took up most of your time, like taking the kids to school. But, you wanted to do it yourself and spend those extra minutes with them.
"It's all part of parenthood, Maxie," you told him, slipping into your pajamas. "I love you, and I miss you," you said, battling to keep your eyes open.
"I miss you too, my love. Have a good sleep and I'll talk to you tomorrow,"
"Go and smash it in FP1 and 2, but I know you will," you said, putting the phone down. You pretty much fell asleep as soon as the phone was set down on the bedside table.
"There's no point in me going if Dad isn't going to be there," Aleta said as you tried to persuade her to get into her dress for the dance at school. Normally, she loved going to all of the events that school offered, but tonight was different.
Tonight was the Father Daughter dance, and Max was away. His flight was late that night, and her couldn't get home in time. He had profusely apologised to Aleta and promised to make it up to her, but it wasn't the same.
You had exhausted every option of people to go with her, since all of her uncles were away as well and everyone else was busy. In the end, you had to go with her just so she had someone. "You'll have me," you meekly smiled, trying to cheer her up a bit.
"I know, but it's not the same," she trailed off, trying not to hurt your feelings. She was grateful that you were going with her, but it wasn't the same as having Max there. Ruben had gone home with one of his friends and was staying over so that he was out of the house.
You had given Aleta a fully girls night in while you got ready, and she did really enjoy herself. You made her her favourite dinner, and bought her favourite snacks. You even made chocolate covered strawberries while she was at school.
Then, you curled her hair and did her makeup like she had wanted you to do, and helped pick a dress and accessories to wear. You then got dolled up, probably more than you should have for a school event, but Aleta had insisted that you went full glam.
"I know, but we're going to go and have the best time we can," you bargained, looking at how pretty she looked and it would be a shame to not go out. "OK, I'm going to text Bella and see what time she's getting there," she said, picking her phone off her bed.
"We'll go in ten, alright?" you said. She nodded as you closed the door and retreated to your bedroom to get your shoes from the wardrobe. As you buckled the clasps on your ankles, you phone started vibrating on the table.
There was no need to check, you knew who it was. "Hey, darling," you said, picking the phone up and putting it on speaker. "Hey, liefde. How's Leta?" he asked, and you could hear the guilt in his tone.
"She's alright, she doesn't want to go without you, but Mom will have to do," you half-heartedly chuckled, slipping the next heel onto your foot. "I feel so bad," he groaned, and you knew he did. He had told you every time you had spoken in the past week that he felt awful.
"I know, Max. She understands you have to work," you said, even though Aleta had complained to you multiple times about how she didn't like Max's job. "Tell her I'm sorry," he mumbled.
"I will. I've got to go now, Max. I'll send you pictures later," you said, dropping your phone into your bag and walking down to Aleta's room as your heels clicked on the floor. "You ready to go, sweetheart?" you asked knocking on the door.
"Yeah," she came out, her bag over her shoulder. You swiped the car keys out of the safe, since Max had told you to take whichever car you wanted since he felt bad. As you drove, you could tell Aleta was imagining Max in your place, but you didn't mind.
Pulling into the school car park, you opened the door for her. "You look stunning, Leta," you complimented, watching as she smiled at your comment. "Shall we?" you asked, extending an arm out to her. She took it as the pair of you walked through the doors.
Since you were a bit early, you let Aleta go off and find Bella as you spotted her Dad (Andrea) at a table. You felt very out of place among all of the Fathers in suits, but you were glad to be there. "Hi, Y/N," he said as you took a seat next to him.
"Hey," you said, watching as Aleta and Bella danced together on the dancefloor, laughing at each other. "Max away?" he asked. He already knew the answer, because he was already planning on asking if Aleta wanted to dance to make her feel better, but he wouldn't have to.
"Yeah, he wishes he could be here but the devil never rests, and neither does Max Verstappen," you joked, spotting even more parents flooding through the door with their kids. "What time does he fly back?" Andrea asked.
"It was at 2, so he should be on the plane already," you told him, gazing around the hall. The school had made it look very nice, with glittery lights and vibrant decorations. "You sure his flight isn't earlier?" Andrea queried, eyes flitting towards the door.
"No, it shouldn't be," you said, following his gaze. Nothing happened, though. "Is it alright for me to dance with Aleta later?" Andrea asked, smile faltering slightly.
"Yeah, I think she'd appreciate that," you nodded.
"How did you two meet?"
"I was working with him when he was on media duties and that kind of stuff. We started talking more when Aleta's father broke up with me," you explained. Everyone (including Aleta) knew that Max wasn't her real father, but it wasn't a big deal. "And he was there for me from day one, and things sparked from there,"
"Well you're very lucky," he smirked, and you felt like something was up.
"I really am,"
"You think he'd fly across the world in the most cramped seat economy class has to offer for you?" you looked at him, eyebrows wrinkled in confusion. It wasn't the normal type of question that someone would ask you. "Yeah, he would," you hesitantly agreed.
"I think you'd be right about that," Andrea smiled, nodding towards the door. Behind a flurry of Dads with their daughters, walked in a blonde man with that glint in his smile that you had fallen oh so in love with.
You sprung from your seat and jogged through the dancefloor, flinging your arms around his neck. "You're here," you whispered, as if you were verifying that he was real and not some figment of your imagination.
"I just couldn't miss it," he whispered back.
"Max, we're only going to be able to set off at seven," Max's pilot told him. That just wasn't going to work for him, unfortunately. "I have to be there at seven," he replied, checking his watch. He had gotten at the airport for seven am so that he could board his plane as soon as possible.
But, today was very busy for some reason and the air wasn't clear until seven. "Wait here," Max said, stomping through the airport to the check-in desk. "Hi, sorry, do you have any seats on any flight going to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport from now to nine?" he asked the lady.
"We've got an economy class seat on a plane that sets off at eight?" she said, checking the system for the flights they had. "Yeah, that's perfect," he replied. Max paid for the seat and went back to the lounge to collect his luggage.
"Whenever you can, can you get the plane to Nice?" he asked, knowing he'd need the plane at home for the next race. "Of course, enjoy your flight," the man smiled, letting Max go.
Max steam rolled his way through the airport and boarded the plane. He found his seat, and he was less than impressed. It was a middle seat with two strangers on either side and there was nowhere near enough leg room for him. But, if it meant getting back to you and Aleta in time, it was worth it.
He spent the next nine hours, fidgeting about in discomfort, counting down the seconds until he could get off the plane and get a taxi home.
After nearly ten hours of traveling, Max wandered through the door to an empty penthouse. After a refreshing shower, he dressed himself in one of his suits and made sure he looked fit for his daughter's first school dance.
Checking the time, he realised he'd be dead on time if he set off instantly, and that was exactly what he did.
Once he arrived, he strolled through the doors, and he spotted some parents not-so-secretly ogling him as they clearly knew who he was. He had texted Andrea and told him he'd be there so that he could distract you when he pulled into the car park.
Now, Andrea had set it up so that you were watching as he walked through. You sprung from your seat and jogged over to him. His eyes were stuck on you as you came to him.
He had seen you in dresses before, but there was just something about the way the loose fabric hung off your hips that made him crazy. Then again, you could have been wearing a trash bag and he would have thought you looked amazing.
"You're here," you whispered into his ear, and he was so glad to be holding you again and he was just happy to talk to you in person again.
"I just couldn't miss it," he whispered back, closing his eyes and embracing the moment. "You go sit with Andrea, I'll go get Aleta," you clapped, not able to wait for her reaction.
Max did as he was told and sat with Andrea, thanking him for going along with the plan that was very hastily set out. But, when he saw you and Aleta in the corner, he stood and waited for his girls to come over.
"Hey Bella," you smiled at the dark haired girl. As you suspected, the girls had become fast friends and had stayed that way ever since. It was safe to say they were best friends for ever.
"Hey, Y/N," she sweetly greeted. Recently, she had practically lived at your house and she was a joy to have around.
"Leta, I've got you something at the table," you said, barely able to contain the surprise. "OK," she said, and you could tell she was skeptical at your giddiness.
You led her through the crowd and kept her behind you so she couldn't see. When you got there, you stepped to the side to reveal Max, and the huge smile on her face said it all.
If you could pause time and take a picture of the elation on hers and Max's face, you would have.
"Dad!" she happily squealed, turning a few heads as she ran up to Max, leaping into his arms. "You're actually here," she cried, burying her face into his neck.
"I wouldn't miss this for the world," he told her, holding his daughter tightly. Putting Aleta down, you saw how her eyes were slightly glassy.
"Oh sweetheart, don't cry," Max quietly consoled so people didn't hear. "I'm just so happy you're here," she smiled, hugging him again and taking in the scent of her dad - the smell of comfort.
"Well I must say all three of you are looking gorgeous tonight," he said to you, Bella and Aleta. Reaching into his pocket, Max produced three pastel coloured roses.
The blue one was handed to Bella, and she beamed at Max. "Thank you, Max," she smiled.
"Not a problem, Bells,"
Tucking the purple flower behind Aleta's ear, she couldn't stop smiling. Giving her a soft kiss on the cheek, he whispered something to her and she started giggling profusely and blushing.
One of the few slow songs of the night came on, and Andrea offered his arm out to Bella, which she took and they strolled away. "I'll be one second, Leta," Max said, and she waited and nodded.
"You look breathtaking, liefde," he complimented, placing the pink flower behind your ear, "And you look unbelievably handsome tonight," you said back, stealing a quick kiss on the lips.
"Really guys? Here?" Aleta joked, earning hearty chuckles from all of you.
"May I have this dance, my lady?" Max poshly asked, extending an arm out to Aleta. "You may, good sir," she responded, and you lost them to the crowd.
"You look incredible, schatje." Max smiled at his beautiful girl.
"Thanks Dad," she responded, still not fully believing that he was actually there, dancing with her.
You stayed in your seat, watching as two of your three favourite people laughed and smiled at the fun they were having. Aleta currently had her feet on top of Max's and was gripping onto him for dear life to stop herself from falling over.
You wished you had Ruben here to make it a full set, but tonight was about Aleta, and you were happy to sit and watch.
As the night drew on, Bella danced with Max for a bit, and Aleta had a go with Andrea and you had declared yourself as photographer for the night. You didn't just take pictures of Aleta, Bella, Max and Andrea, you offered to take pictures of the other Dads and daughters around.
By the end of the night, your camera roll was nearly full of pictures of smiling pairs, dancing or pulling silly faces at the camera. You were stood in the corner, snapping some shots of everyone for the school website.
"I wondered where you'd gone," a voice beside you said, leaning against the wall next to you.
"I was just getting some more pictures," you said, glancing at Max beside you. As the colourful lights hit his face, it made his eyes stand out - they were nearly glowing. To say he'd just spent the whole day traveling, he looked as good as ever.
Turning and catching him off guard, you captured the perfect still image of him, leaning against the wall as the strobe lights flashed. It was the perfect lighting for him, and it encapsulated most of the things you loved about him.
"Do you want to dance?" he asked, nodding over to the slightly empty dance floor. Most people had sat down for a bit and were having a drink or nibbling on snacks. "Thank you, but this isn't the place. Tonight is all about Leta," you smiled, and he respected the rejection.
For the final dance of the night, the pairings filtered back onto the dance floor as you sat and watched. As people took their places, you couldn't see Max and Aleta anywhere. You had spotted Bella and Andrea, but your two were nowhere to be seen.
Out of nowhere, Aleta appeared through the middle of the crowd, holding her hand out to you. "Where's your Dad?" you asked, eyes darting around the room to try and locate Max.
As if on cue, Max appeared next to you and took a seat. "This one is for you, liefde," he said, motioning for you to go with Aleta.
"But tonight is about you two," you dismissed.
"If it wasn't for you, then I wouldn't be here, and you look too pretty to not have at least one dance," Aleta complimented, and there was no resisting her sweet words. You took to the dance floor with your daughter, waltzing around the place like a couple out of a Disney movie.
Finally, the music ended and everyone retreated from the dance floor, collecting their belongings and making their way out of the doors. "Mom, can I go home with Bella?" Aleta asked, latching onto your arm. "Did Andrea say you can?"
"Yeah, I did. She can borrow some of Bella's stuff," Andrea chipped in from behind you.
"Then yes, you can," you said to Aleta, quickly smirking at Max. For the first time in ages, you were going to get the house all to yourselves. You said your goodbyes to Andrea, Bella and Leta, before hopping into your seperate cars and speeding home.
Max got there first, and you found him stood in the kitchen, still in his suit as the speaker in the corner played some soft, oldies music. "Is now the right time for a dance, my love?" he asked, looking you up and down. "I'd say it is, yeah,"
He pulled you close, and you rested your head on his chest. Max peppered some kisses on the top of your head as you swayed to the music. "I thought you'd be all danced out," you laughed, looking up at him.
"I'll always save a dance for you, my darling ," he mumbled, losing his train of thought as he looked at you. His hand squeezed your waist, tugging you impossibly closer to him. "Did I tell you how gorgeous you look?" he mumbled into your hair.
"Did I tell you how handsome you look?" you replied as the song came to close. You both carried on swaying in silence for a short while, slowly manoeuvring towards the hallway that lead to your bedroom. "What do you say we try out for number three?" he said, glancing over to the door.
"I like the sound of the process, but not the outcome," you said. That was probably the weirdest way to say you didn't want another child, but Max got what you meant. "Come on, just one more. Besides, I was number 33,"
"Exactly, you're not Daniel. I just don't want to push another child out, to be blunt about it," you told him, and you could see the slight amount of sadness behind his eyes. He just wanted to hold a baby again and drive down the road of being a new parent one more time.
"I'm sorry," you said, holding a hand to his cheek. You knew he wanted one more child, but you were content with Aleta and Ruben. "Don't be, I get it," he smiled, trying to hide his disappointment from you. It was your body and completely your choice, but it didn't mean he wasn't slightly dejected.
"I am happy with our two angels already," he said, leaning down and pressing a kiss to your lips. "But I still think the process sounds fun," he smirked, causing you to turn red. Max gently pulled you with him to your room, and you certainly enjoyed the night by yourselves.
You were in the kitchen, making lunch for everyone when the buzzing from the intercom sounded out. Washing your hands of the tomato juices that you were cutting, you pressed the button. "Hey, Y/N, it's me," you heard the voice of Charles sounded through.
"Come on up," you unlocked the door to let him in, and he appeared from the elevator a few minutes later. "Where is everyone?" he asked, looking around.
"Aleta is with Bella, they've just gotten back from getting themselves some ice cream. Max and Ruben are still getting ready," you said. "You want a coffee or something?"
"No, but thanks. Do you need any help?" he offered.
"No, you can sit down," you said, and Charles took a seat at the island in the middle of the kitchen. "How's a caesar salad sounding for lunch?"
"Sounds great," he said, his head turning to see Max and Ruben emerging from the hall. Max had been trying to fit Ruben into one of his old race suits so that he would feel extra special during their boys day out.
"Look at you, future world champ!" Charles exclaimed. Thankfully, Ruben had taken a great interest in racing and had started karting when he was five and was getting really good. He had been taking part in some competitions recently, and he was handling himself well.
Max had his Red Bull suit on, and Charles stuck out like a sore thumb with his scarlet of the Scuderia. "I'll take lunch through to the girls, help yourselves," you smiled to the boys, plating up a portion of salad and some buttered baguette for the girls.
You got back to see all three of then tucking in happily, enjoying what you had made. "You guys going now?" you said, taking away the dirty dishes.
"Liefde, sit down, I'll do it," Max said, snatching the plates of you and gently nudging you towards his seat. "You guys go, you should be taking advantage of all the track time you can get," you told them, watching as Ruben sprung from his chair and grabbed Charles' hand, dragging him towards the elevator. "Let's go, Uncle Charlie!"
"Thanks for lunch, Y/N. You'll have to come round for dinner at mine sometime soon!" he collared as the elevator doors dinged close. "You should go and catch up with him before he talks Charles into something," you laughed.
"Good idea, I'll see you later," he said, kissing you and scampering off after Ruben and Charles.
"I told you I'd beat you," Charles stuck his tongue out at Ruben as your son hopped out of his kart, looking utterly dejected. "But you're a karting champion, I'm not," he sulked. taking his helmet.
"Oh you will be, I know you will," Charles reassured.
"Do you want to go again? 5 laps, first one across the line wins?" Charles asked him as Max pulled up. "Charles I swear to god the next time you push me off the track will be your last!" he huffed, clambering out of the kart and hobbling over to the group.
"All is fair in love and racing, Max," Charles giggled childishly with Ruben. "Come on, we're going for 5 more laps," Charles said, running off to get back in his kart. Max just sighed and shook his head. When Charles was around the kids, he was just a big kid himself.
Max decided he was going to race this one, and he wasn't going to show the Monganesque any mercy. Max, Charles and Ruben lined up on the start line, ready to race like their lives depended on it. "On your marks," Max started.
"Get set!" Charles added.
"Go!" Ruben finished, everyone zooming off the line in record time. They veered around the bends, hurtling down the straights. Ruben had the edge into the first turn, Max and Charles going side by side. Max held on for dear life as his kart shuddered on the slight touch with Charles, nearly sending him flying. He could see the smirk on Charles' lips as they drove.
Ruben was a good few seconds in front of them, thinking he would have an easy win. Out of the corner of his eye, Max just saw a bright red streak careening off to the side. Briefly turning back, he saw Charles sat at a stiff halt, trying to back up from the tyre barrier. Max laughed to himself, not even contemplating stopping to help his friend.
Max was quickly catching up to Ruben as Charles positioned himself at the finish line, wanting to see a clear winner. For laps, your boys were pretty much side by side, drifting around the corners. As they crossed the line for one final lap, Charles was clapping and cheering. "Go on Ruben! Take him out!" Charles shouted, even if they probably couldn't hear him.
Down the final straight, it was father and son racing next to each other in their karts, both of them so desperate to win. Charles probably needed a photo finish to actually determine a winner, but he was pretty sure he had an idea. But, even if he did have a photo finish, he would have chosen anyway. As they both hopped out of the karts, they raced back to Charles, both needing to know who had won.
"You are the champion of the world, Mini Verstappen!" Charles happily grinned after a few seconds of perfectly calculated silence. Enough to build suspense, but not so much that it seemed like he was doing something dodgy. A huge, beaming smile spread across Ruben's face while he let out squeals of joy. Charles hoisted him up onto his shoulders nearly dropping him in the process.
"I'm going to be like you and Daddy one day, Uncle Charlie," Ruben said, Max looking up at him with pride filling his eyes.
"And who are you going to drive for?" Max asked, expecting him to say Ferrari just to annoy him.
"McLaren! Like Lando!" He said, Max and Charles both scoffing. Max would honestly rather he drove for Ferrari.
"Not a chance," Charles said as Ruben plucked his cap off his head.
"I'm going to be champion of the world," he said to himself, almost like a promise. Both of the men heard him, knowing he would one day. One day, it would be his turn in the sun just like Max and Charles. "You sure are, Ruben. You sure are," Max nodded as he spotted you pulling into the car park.
Charles and Max were going for drinks after karting, and you had agreed to pick Ruben up beforehand. When he spotted you, he wriggled off Charles' shoulders and ran over to you, jumping into your arms.
"You're getting heavy mister," you said, your muscles aching under the weight of him.
"You're not as strong as Uncle Charlie then," he said as you kissed him all over his face. Somehow, the race suit made him look even more like Max.
"Your Mom is a lot stronger than me, Rubes," Charles smiled, before waving you goodbye as they drove off for drinks.
A/N - I'm sorry this has taken so long, it has been finished for a short while but I was on holiday! There may or may not be one more part in the works if you want to see that. It'll be here a lot quicker than this one was I swear! Also, I would love some of your suggestions - I am open to anything!

Leona
"The Tracker"
It's usually very busy in the kingdom this time of year. Handling the harvest, taxes, keeping an eye out for droughts, and other things that pop up. These things are part of his responsibility as the official grand duke. His brother gave him a good chunk of territory after it was confiscated from a group of inept nobles. He stated that Leona more than deserved it after uncovering their faults.
Leona gained the freedom to rule how he desired with no input or control from his family or counsel. The people respected him and his knights swore loyalty to him.
Ruggie became an aid obviously and is still the only one to keep up with Leona. Despite Jack being strong enough to become a knight he became a botanist.
While Leona is not king, he still basically is one. The only time he's ever had to follow orders is when his brother begs him to attend functions in the capital, which Leona usually ignores.
Recently Cheka started staying at Leona's castle for the summer to learn how his uncle rules his region. Thus ends the lion's peaceful days.
Ruggie sometimes takes the cub to his old neighborhood to learn of its past. The slums no longer exist as Leona created a project to help those living there and created new jobs to support them. The idea wasn't his alone. It came about when Yuu proposed a plan to help Ruggie community. She knew a few examples from her own world to solve this problem and together they made a plan.
She was an incredible woman. Falena had insisted had she become his sister-in-law.
"Listen to me brother, you don't meet a girl like that every dynasty. You need to do something now or never."
Now did become never. Leona learned the hard way that lazing around doesn't stop the world around you from moving forward with or without you. Without Yuu.
Maybe she would have stayed if he asked. He doesn't know. He moved on.
Opportunity was a window and it was closed until someone opened a door. A gateway in this case. There was a way to see her again.
Tumblr media
"I don't know how you do this. One moment you're a velcro baby and won't let me put you down the next you're gone." Yuu watched Grimm bolt for the sandbox.
Yuu had gotten the go ahead from Grmm's doctor and social worker to introduce him to the outside world. He was finally secure enough to interact with people his age.
He liked the sandbox which meant extra laundry to Yuu. She checked her bag for a change of clothes when she was stopped by someone.
"Excuse me? Miss I couldn't help but ask. Are you the author of the Lost Princess series?" The woman asked.
"Yes, actually I-" Yuu was cut off.
"It's so amazing to meet you! My children love your books and I love that new romance novel you put out. I heard you were working on a t.v show based on the kids books." She asked in excitement.
"Yes, a network reached out about it but I wanted it to suit my vision and a lot is going on with it. Besides that, I have a family and I can't be away from my son for long." Yuu explained.
"I see, I understand completely. My girls need to be watched like hawk. How old is yours?" The mother seemed to switch gears the moment kids were brought up. She was clearly an attentive mother as she occasionally looked over to where her daughters were on the swing.
"He's 4 now. Over there in the sandbox." Yuu said pointing towards the box except he wasn't there.
The other mother looked around questioning.
"I saw another kid other there a minute ago with a small boy. Do you know if he has a friend here?" She said with a thick edge to her voice.
"No, he doesn't know anyone but me. He hates strangers! Grimm?! Grimm?!" Yuu ran for the sandbox and yelled for her some.
The other mother called for her daughter's and told them to stay close as she called for Grimm as well.
In the back of her head Yuu knew what was going on. She had read stories about predators using kids to lure in other victims. Her son was kidnapped!
Tumblr media
Leona stood at the door of a small house in a quaint neighborhood. The house had to be hers. The scent of desert roses and clove was everywhere. That was her favorite perfume.
He knocked a few times but there was no reply.
Cheka(who insisted on coming and Leona had no choice anyways) investigated everything around until a door slammed open in the neighbor's yard.
"Scram you little urchin! Stay out of my garden! She yelled at Cheka as he rooted around the flower bed.
"Who are you calling an urchin?" Leona growled as Cheka took cover behind his uncle.
"You let your son tear up people's yards? You are no better than that hussy that lives here. Are you dropping off another one of her noisy bastard kids? Keep him! I don't want another one running around here!" The old woman ranted.
Leona doesn't advocate punching old women's remaining teeth out but this woman was making him a believer. But he wasn't going to do that in front of Yuu's house in public.
"I don't know who you're calling a hussy but I'm looking for Yuu. Since you are already so nosy you must know right?" Leona asked as politely as he could muster.
"Like I'd tell a thug like you." The old woman said.
"That's fine. If you can't say anything useful you might as well not speak." He said casting a silence curse on the old bat.
The crone tried to flap her gums more but nothing came out as she tried to yell and rant some more.
"Cheka, it's time to practice tracking." Leona picked up a trail that did go too far. Yuu must be on a walk.
Cheka excitedly bounded off with Leona a few yards behind.
When they made it to a park Cheka sped off before Leona noticed.
The old woman said Yuu had a kid. Damn things did change. He should have expected it, kind of. He knew she liked kids and would volunteer to babysit Cheka all the time but knowing she started a family was unexpected.
Was he jealous...no. Why would he be? She didn't owe him loyalty especially when she believed they would never meet again. They weren't even together. So what if he never saw anyone after her and turned down every engagement? She owed him nothing. It was enough to spend what time they did have together.
"Look!" Leona snapped out of his revelry as Cheka brought a small boy over to him.
The boy was small, looked to be less then half the age of Cheka, and held a bright yellow plastic hand shovel.
"Oh no." Leona already had a bad feeling about this. "Cheka what do you think tracking means?"
Cheak puffed out his cheeks as he picked up his new friend from under under his arms like how a toddler picks up a cat.
"I followed the scent and I found him." The cub replied.
The boy had little awareness of what was happening thankfully. But Cheka had a point, the boy smelled like black clove, cinnamon and faintly of desert roses.
"Cheka you can't just take a kid from a playground, even if you are a kid yourself. Put him back before I get called a kidnapper." The instant 'kidnapper' left his mouth the latent survival instincts in the boy went off and he sprinted for the bush and disappeared.
"Shit." Leona muttered.
"Shit." Cheka echoed.
"Not you! Find him before his mom-"
"Grimm! Grimm! Where are you!" Yuu's voice echoed across the park.
He's going to die. He's going to die and I'll all be this brat's fault.
He wasn't overreacting, he is under-reacting. Leona has seen this woman do a hundred-meter dash just to hit her friends upside the head. She once tried to fight a referee after getting a red card and it took Jack and Sebek to pry her off.
Leona managed to find Grimm as he climbed up a tree.
"I swear if you fall from there," Leona growled under his breath.
Cheka tried to follow him up but Leona yanked him back down by the back of his shirt.
"You stay here, go distract Yuu." Leona ordered
"Aye!" The cub mock saluted before bounding off again.
Tumblr media
Yuu began to feel lightheaded as she searched every corner of the playground. She asked every parent and child if they had seen her son.
She pulled out her phone and began dialing for emergency services. Just before she pressed the call button she was ambushed from behind.
Two arms circled her stomach and squeezed. Yuu yelped and grabbed one of the hands. Prickly claws dug in firmly.
"Nanna!" A familiar voice called for her.
It was Cheka! Little Cheka wasn't so little anymore. Well, he was taller at least and was still very much a cub.
If Yuu wasn't so frantic she would have squeezed him to death tighter than Floyd but a mother's mind isn't so easily swayed. Grimm first, reunion second.
"That's the boy from earlier!" The other mom said "He took your son!"
HE WHAT?!
Before Cheka could run he was grabbed by the ear.
"Cheka Kingscholar!" Yuu yelled. "Sorry about all this trouble Amaranth. I'll handle the rest from here."
Amaranth laughed a bit leaving Yuu to parent.
Cheka yelped as he struggled to escape.
"Sorry Nanna! I just thought it was funny and I wanted to play with cousin!" Cheka squirmed "He's with uncle I swear!"
Yuu dragged the cub by the ear back to where Grimm was still in the tree.
Currently, Leona was trying to grab the boy while Grimm reflexively hissed and spat like a feral cat. Grimm only did that when he was really scared. One of the side effects of being locked in a basement with only a cat for company for who knows how long.
"I said I was going to hurt you, now stop trying to bite me!" Leona tried to grab him by the collar.
"Mama!" Grimm called out as he dodged Leona again and climbed higher.
"I'm trying to take you to her! Do you want to be left up here?" Leona managed to snag the boy this time by the waist and hauled Grimm up in a position that would keep them stable but not in biting range.
"Grimm no bitting! It's safe! He won't hurt you!" Yuu called out.
Leona worked his way down and as he made it to the lowest branch dropped the squirming toddler in Yuu's waiting arms.
Immediately the boy wiggled around to wrap his arms around his mother like a koala.
"I'd really like an explanation for what's going on but I'm tired and Grimm is overdue for a nap." Yuu sighed.
Leona agreed wholeheartedly.
Tumblr media
"So you missed me, my prince?" Yuu laughed as she pulled the leftover leaves and twigs out of his hair.
'My prince' he remembered when she used to call him that when she wanted to tease him. The boys couldn't hear at least, they exhausted themselves and were currently napping.
"No one has called me prince in years. Most just say, Grand Duke." Leona sighed in relief as Yuu combed out his locks.
"Fancy~" Yuu sang before her tone shifted "You've changed, Leo."
"That's your fault. You changed me."
Yuu couldn't pretend he was lying. She wouldn't leave Leona alone back then.
She recognized that Leona was in pain and asked-begged him to get help. She taught him to recognize his feelings so he could explain what was wrong. It was hard for him to accept that help but in time he improved.
Yuu forced him to eat healthier and made excuses everytime she wanted him to do something more then sleep.
"These guys keep harassing me. I can't go alone." She'd say poking him in the ribs until he caved.
When they had bad days. They'd sleep cuddled up beside each other.
"You don't need to fix me." He'd complain but he didn't mean it.
"I'm not. I just don't want to see someone else go through what I did." She said.
Leona wasn't an idiot. He knew she was more fragile than she let on but it never mattered to him. She was the strongest person he knew. So he believed in her words and got his life together.
"Change is good. I've changed too." Yuu responded.
"I've noticed. So where's the dad? Not in the picture?"
"Never was. I found Grimm and took him home. He has his quirks but he's a good kid."
"I've noticed, his bites were just full of kindness." Leona said holding out his nicked hand.
Yuu rolled her eyes, he could heal himself with magic but was being dramatic.
"He was just scared. Besides his teeth aren't nearly as sharp as Cheka's." Yuu scoffed as she intertwined their hands.

While the adults got cozy the kids were up to trouble.
"So this book is about the king of beasts?" Cheka asked puzzled.
"It is about the lost princess and how she met the king of beasts. He wanted a war with the enemy kingdom and worked hard to win. The princess taught him that the war was dumb and he should be a good king instead." Grimm said flipping the pages.
"And then they get married and live happily ever after?" Cheaka asked.
"No! The princess has to go home and goes to the underwater city to get help from the sea folk. The princess can't get married." Grimm argued.
"I dunno, I think the princess is going to marry the beast." Cheka smirked.
"What do you mean?" The boy asked tilting his head.
"Ask your mom. We are going to be cousins soon. Shihihi" Cheka cackled using Ruggie's laugh.
"Mom?" Grimm scrunched his nose in thought before realizing "MAMAAAA!"
Grimm cried as he stumbled down the stairs.

It’s early in the summer, about the end of June you are finally able to take a weekend off of work, the hospital you work at never gave up on you through the weekends, especially during summer weekends where most accidents occur, which is specifically the season you regret taking your medical degree.
Standing in your apartment around 8 in the evening, struggling to correct your eyeliner in front of the long full body mirror in your bedroom, you curse under your breath for fucking up your eyeliner again before putting down the pencil and smudging the stupid line you already put on your lash lines.
You applaud yourself, even though you sucked to begin with, it didn’t turn out half bad. Or at least that’s what you convince yourself.
Your phone buzzes on  your nightstand which makes the music you’re already playing on your phone go quieter, you turn while singing the missed part of the song you’re playing, you look at the screen, it’s Hoseok, your high school best friend who ended up being your really close friend even after all these years of studying abroad and being busy with work, your parents became close with his since they already love him.
You slide down the notification.
“you better be ready when im there”
“u know I hate waiting in the car”
“and you always take so long so pls be ready”
You were going to the club to celebrate the last weekend of your friend Yoongi being single, you had already chose a short flattering, but very revealing dress, barely covers your lower ass, silver that fully exposes the tattoo on your spine of a long flower that ends on the nape of your neck, your dress barely covers your lower back, with silver high heels.
You rarely get a chance to dress up because of your time consuming work that robbed all the fun out of your life, not long ago you started balancing work and having an actual life, you and Hoseok visited different clubs and went on so many hiking trip together through the past year which resulted in you making a new friend to add to your group, Hoseok is such a social butterfly and a comfortable person to be around.
Your lips curve in a soft smile, well he’s right, no matter how hard you try to manage your time, you’re always late, your fingers automatically hover over the screen to reply.
“yes sir.” With a salute emoji.
You get up and take off your pajama set and get into the small dress you chose, you loosen your big curls and make the final touches, you’re looking perfect and you knew it, tonight will be solely about having fun, Yoongi is actually getting married!
Your phone rings after a few minutes and you know it’s Hoseok, you answer and inform him that you’ll be down in seconds, you take your purse and put in your sample size perfume, phone and lipstick, before getting in your not comfortable very high heels, you turn off the lights and make your way out of the building.
You spot his fancy Porsche parked right in front of the entrance, you roll your eyes when you see him walk out the car and make his way towards you.
“Look at you.” He holds his hands out to hold yours. “You look like a disco ball.” He spins you and whistles, which makes click your tongue and look at him with your free hand on your hip.
“A beautiful disco ball.” He elaborates, he looks good too, wearing a gray suit with the first 4 buttons of his off-white shirt unbuttoned. You hug him and give him a soft kiss on the cheek. “Let’s get going we’re already late.”
Flaws and all, I love ‘em all, to me you’re perfect
The moment you walk into the club, Hoseok walking behind you with his hand on your back, slowly guiding you to the table you’re friends booked, place already packed with people. And once Taehyung spots you he gets up with his drink in his hand. “Finally.” He starts dancing, slowly making his way towards you, which makes you sway your shoulders, dancing with him and laugh at him, clearly he’s already drunk.
He hugs you in his big arms and kisses your temple softly. “There you are, I hope you enjoyed the hike you didn’t invite me to.” He says in a sarcastic note making you nudge him in the chest.
You, Hoseok, Yoongi and his fiancé Mia had went on a hike a couple weeks ago which Mia suggested and you couldn’t decline her offer, you could’ve told the boys but it all happened so quick, you didn’t get a chance to invite any of them.
“Come on, it wasn’t that fun any way.” You say subtly into his ear which he smirks and takes another sip of his drink, he hugs Hoseok before both of you approach your table, you hug Yoongi and he hugs you back. “It’s really happening huh?” You rub his back.
“I’m really putting my dick in jail.” He laughs, handing you his drink, which you don’t think twice before sipping it.
“Come on, we’re getting a round of shots!” Seokjin moves a seat away to give you space to sit, his hair grew longer than you could ever remember, he pushed it back but a few strands manage to slip on his forehead.
“You guys are already drunk?” You exclaim before taking a shot glass from him, you all stand up and clink your shots together.
“To putting Yoongi’s dick in jail!” Jungkook says loud which makes you all repeat after him. “To putting Yoongi’s dick in jail!” You swallow the shot and cringe immediately at the bitter taste, which makes you chase it with the nearest glass of juice you find on the table.
“Hey. Y/N, let’s dance.” Jimin puts his hand on your back, you shake your head immediately in refusal. “I need more alcohol.”
Jimin ends up pulling Taehyung to the dance floor, you take your seat between Yoongi and Seokjin, Hoseok already headed to the bar to grab you both drinks.
“They finally let you off work?” Seokjin asks out loud for you to hear him, you nod and straighten your back. “I didn’t take a weekend off since October.” You pout, he nods and take a sip of his drink. “You’ll figure it out soon, it’s always difficult in the beginning.”
You and Seokjin met at the bar near the hospital you work out, he’s a pediatrician resident in his 4th year, you never knew he worked at the same hospital until you met him at the bar, it was only Hi’s and Hello’s at the beginning of your friendship, but he made his way into the group when he actually showed up when you needed him, he’s a bully sometimes, which makes you laugh even when you force it out, but he’s the sweetest.
“And you?” You turn to Yoongi. “How are you not panicking?”
He rolls his eyes at you and puts his drink down, “Typical Y/N”
Studying abroad has definitely made you a bit more open minded than usual, it’s not that you refuse relationships, you’re totally not against them, but it’s just not your thing. You’ve never been through a full experience to love and be loved, but you never craved it. Back while you were studying, your week nights were devoted just for studying and focusing on your career, but on the weekends, you had to spend them out, partying, clubbing, having flings with a couple of people, you liked your lifestyle and you still enjoy it being like this.
You nudge Yoongi in his arm and add. “You’re so brave for doing this, I’m happy for you.”
“I would totally agree with Y/N, I would panic.” Jungkook shrugs, which makes you high five him.
“Come on.” Seokjin scoffs. “Jungkook wants to pound every pussy in Seoul before getting married.”
“Word.” Hoseok agrees without even getting the context while putting your drinks down, Jungkook’s mouth falls as if he was offended. “He’s not wrong.” Hoseok shrugged.
Not long after, you’re not completely drunk, but drunk enough to get on the dance floor with Taehyung and Yoongi, you’re sandwiched between them, the three of you dancing to the loud beat of music, the dance floor is crowded as hell, people making out and kissing in the corner of the club, some even grinding against each other, the place smells like a mix of perfume, cologne, and hormones.
Seokjin joins you eventually and starts dancing with you, you laugh at how stupidly drunk he is, his cheeks flushed red and his eyes barely kept open. You lean closer to his ear. “I’m gonna go grab a drink.”
You go over to the crowded bar, you hardly find a place to stand next to man waiting for his drink, you stumble on the small step you didn’t see, which you curse under your breath for not paying attention, you barely bump into the man’s elbow, you out of habit apologize while panicking. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” He said, you could feel him looking down at you while you’re checking if your heels are okay, you shrug it off once it looks okay, you walk closer to the bar while leaning your elbows on it, waiting for the bartender to notice you.
“Are you okay?” The gentleman asks, right until now you realized you don’t know who this deep voice belongs to, you turn to look at him, sharp nose, a charming smile with a soft dimple on his cheek, small orbs that stare right into yours.
You visibly gulp and nod, studying his face and features more, he even dares to shoot a sweet smile at you. He knows he has a beautiful smile and he uses it as move to make.
And at this moment you realize you’ve been quite for an uncomfortable amount of time.
“Yeah. I’m alright.” You nod, you know it’s not that hot in June, but you’re sweating. He turned his face to the bartender and you notice his soft jaw and long neck, his long fingers wrap around the glass, you’re pretty sure he said something, but you were busy staring at his buff arms making their way to his back pocket to locate his wallet, your eyes chase every single movement he makes, and with his hands locating his wallet in his front pocket, your eyes fall on his thick thighs, where did this man come from?
“What can I get you?” The bartender asks, immediately making you snap out of your thoughts, you look up and clear your throat. “I’ll have a martini.”
An awkward silence and tension builds between you and the man right next to you, you want to say something but you don’t want to sound stupid, you choose to ignore your thoughts and just take your phone out of your purse and act occupied, you look very stupid when you’re deleting old pictures on your phone.
“Y/N?” He says, which makes your eyes widen and you almost choke in your own breath, you look at him again, Do you know him?
“I’m sorry?” You answer surprisingly fast, which makes him take a sip from his drink and laugh. “Your phone case is a pass card.”
You’re confused for a second, still trying to process what he’s saying, you’re drunk, but not drunk enough to be this stupid and slow and thick?
He can easily read your face and he shoots you another one of his smiles, he knows what he’s doing.
He gives you a look, which clearly means ‘Can I?’, And you shrug telling him to elaborate. He grabs your phone and flips it over still remaining in your hands, which reveals your see through phone case, that you have your hospital pass card inside it, showing your full name in a large font.
“Ah this.” You immediately turn your phone back, you hope he didn’t see too much, like where you work or what’s your job. You look back at him to see him staring right into your face, studying your features too.
“I’m Namjoon.” He reaches his hand out to shake yours, and you don’t hesitate at all to shake his hand back and feel his long fingers squeezing your hand ever so softly, both of you shaking hands and not letting go for a few seconds.
“I’m sorry for catching you off guard.” He grins, which makes you feel like something is pinching you in your stomach. “But you have your pass card on full display, which if it  makes you feel better, I just saw your first name, nothing else.”  He adds, like he knew what you were concerned about.
“Y/N!” Jungkook calls from behind, which makes you pull your hand away from Namjoon’s in the speed of light, your weird attitude doesn’t go unnoticed by him, he looks back at Jungkook and turns back to face the bar and take a sip of his drink.
“Come on, we’re popping the champagne.” Jungkook’s hand sits respectfully on your upper back, you nod and look back at him. “I’m waiting for my drink, I’ll follow you in a second.” although your drink has been sitting in front of you for the past few seconds, Jungkook is too drunk to notice and he heads back to your table, Namjoon turns to look at the sight of Jungkook joining the rest of the boys around the table.
“Your boyfriend?” He asks, which you think is a little bit over the line.
“Him?” You cringe. No offense to Jungkook, but you and him are just friends, you almost ended up sleeping with him long time ago and thankfully it didn’t happen, you’re just friends, and you’re smart enough to know it’s wrong if you did it. “Absolutely not.” You enunciate it.
Your fingers wrap around your drink and you know it’s your turn to make him look. “Nice to meet you Namjoon.” You clink your glass with his that’s resting on the table, and you turn and move your hair to the side to expose your tatted back to him, you walk towards the table and join the boys for the rest of the night.
Your night has come to an end, you’re leaning against the wall outside the club with Jimin waiting for Hoseok to bring his car, your heels in your hands and Jimin’s jacket  on your shoulders, muffled music from inside still in your ears, you’re done for the night, you’re not completely drunk, but you started having a strong headache minutes ago, you need to rest, shower and go to sleep.
You laugh at Taehyung teasing Jungkook and you join Taehyung, Jungkook ends up flipping Taehyung off and sending you a fly kiss which is way over you when you see behind him Namjoon, walking out of the club with what seems like his friends.
Ironically, you can hear the song ‘Satisfaction’ played from the inside.
Push me, and then just touch me.
Till I can get my satisfaction.
He had his suit jacket in his hands, he was rolling his shirt sleeves slowly up with his long fingers.
Are you drooling?
He sits on a near bench and just man spreads his legs, his hand taking out a pack of cigarettes from his jacket, he takes one out and puts it in between his plump lips, clicking the lighter a couple of times while shielding the flame with his other hand before it goes to his hair and runs his fingers through it, he looks around and notices you staring at him, you’re not even blinking. He hallows his cheeks while taking a drag and blows out a huge cloud of smoke.
This man walked out of a fucking book!
He doesn’t hesitate to show you his dimple one last time before winking at you, your breath hitches and your hand goes to your stomach, there’s a knot that you feel only he can make it feel better, you’re sweating more than usual, and you can feel the heat between your legs getting uncomfortable.
“Drive safe Hoseok.” Jin opens the passenger seat and looks at you, you snap out of your thoughts and turn towards the car, “Don’t forget our dinner tomorrow.” He adds.
You had already planned on a celebration dinner for Yoongi too, this time a little more formal considering some of the boys are bringing along their girlfriends. You nod and look one last time at Namjoon. You secretly wish you took his number or had a drink with him, but you’re not a girl who makes a first move, for your pride’s sake, it’s always guys making a move on you.
“Text me when you get there safe.” Yoongi leans his palms on the roof of the car, you get into the car and buckle your seat belts.
You and Yoongi didn’t meet long ago, about a year and a half ago, you were with Hoseok and Jungkook playing bowling, when Jungkook got a little too competitive and decided to challenge the table next to you, which had Yoongi, his girlfriend, now fiancé. And other friends. Yoongi won of course, which you and Hoseok admired that finally someone humbled this man, you met him again at the bowling place and you just clicked with him. He’s also offered his help since he works at a bank, he makes everything easier for you. He’s a true friend.
“Good night.” You smile at him. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” You wave to the rest of the boys and they wave back, you turn to look at that bench again, Namjoon must’ve left because you can’t locate him, you lean your head back into the car seat and your hands move to the air conditioning, you’re on fire!
Hoseok didn’t drink throughout the night since he’s driving, he did take a couple sips of whine, but he’s not drunk at all.
Doesn’t take that long to get back to your place, you undress and get into the shower and clean off your makeup, you take a bottle of water out from the fridge and sit in your living room.
The images of this man is haunting you, you only know his name and his face, you don’t know what he does, where he lives, how old is he?
You look at your phone and open up your social media, shuffling between the apps and searching ‘Namjoon’. You don’t even know his last name, he could use a picture that’s not his.
Your friends admired that you were talented in finding people’s accounts, especially when one of the men had a secret crush on a girl, you would help them find her social accounts by trying to search in different ways.
And you did manage to find an instagram account, the username matching his real name, the picture was taken on a beach, a figure of a tall man with his back turned to the camera, it could be him after all
You open the account but it’s clearly not active, following 120 accounts and followed by 70, and only 1 photo uploaded. But the account is private.
You put down your phone in frustration and sigh, you end up gulping your water and going to bed. It’s just a one time thing, you won’t see him again.
Or at least that’s what you think.
It’s the moment he walks back to his house when he feels the heavy weight of the world on his shoulders, he stands in front of his apartment door, debating whether he should go inside or just go crash at his parents.
No, no. They don’t have to know.
Kim Namjoon, the successful man who went out of the box and did the extraordinary, chose an out of the box job, with a high degree. Quickly managed to pull his life together and marry—well not the love of his life, it’s the woman he got used to being around.
Married for 3 years and not once did he feel that this marriage is about them, it was about her and only her.
First year was low key not that bad but not that good either, every married couple have fallouts, but he assumes that they both have to compromise, but only he had to compromise. She wants everything done her way, she wants him to eat what she eats, go where she goes, not out of love, but out of habit of controlling people around her.
Yet he was sweet and considerate, she travelled to a different province to live with him away from her parents, maybe that’s why she’s acting like this, she’s probably homesick, he did everything he could to make it up to her, he bathed her with love and gifts and money. He wanted to show her the world quite literally, but she just refuses every act of love, even denies his touch in front of their family, never did she ever like a photo he posted of both of them, she never left a comment which he really craves. He wants to show people he loves her.
Even when he once tried to surprise her on their one year anniversary, booked her first class seats to New York on new years eve, she completely rejected and never even said thank you. Goodness, she never even gifted him on his birthday.
Second year things went significantly downhill, when they found out she’s pregnant. Planning for kids was never on the table, not that they don’t want kids, but this kid is totally unplanned for. He so desperately wants to be a dad, but he’s not sure how she feels about him, or most importantly how he feels about her. They’re married just by name.
She made up an excuse for being a tough sleeper and she wanted her own bed, he gave up the master bedroom to give her her own space, and moved out to the couch at first when he thought it was temporarily or short termed.
3 Months, 4 months..
9 Months passed, she gave birth and came up with another excuse of the baby crying at night, he had flights to catch in the morning, she doesn’t want to mess up his sleep. As if she cares.
A man has his own desires, he tried different ways, kissing her, touching, even suggesting movie nights to show her something that might make her aroused, none.
He adores his son, that’s what’s keeping him sane at the moment, although when he comes back late from work, baby Jay mostly gets ready for bed by that time. Play time with daddy is not allowed, he can’t even love his son the way he should.
His son turned 2 in their third year of marriage, he can now talk , walk, even run. And baby Jay doesn’t seem to like mommy as much as he likes daddy, although he spends most of the weekends in Ilsan with her parents, but he’s still attached to his daddy.
It was 2 in the morning, standing in front of his apartment door, the debate tonight is taking longer than usual, especially when he saw you, the astonishing lady who fucking screams his type, outgoing, gorgeous, attractive, social hence your large group of friends.
He searches his pockets before fishing out his ring, puts it back on his left ring finger, before pressing the pass code on the door, the lights are.. On?
He makes his way inside his flat and locks the door behind him, “Where have you been?” She storms out from the guests room, a huge ugly frown on her once he thought was a pretty face.
“I’m sorry, I went out with guys from work.” Namjoon’s job kind of restrained him when it came to having friends, he did have some, but they ended up getting busy with their regular jobs and life, it became easier to hang out with his co workers because they got off work together, plus they click and get along really well.
“Do you know what time it is?”
When he looks at her, he swims in a deep pond of thoughts in his head, he can’t even remember the last time she showed him skin, he did excuse her when she gave birth when she wanted to be in comforting clothes, but their soon is at her parents house, she could at least try and show some skin.
In a pair of sweat pants and an oversized stained shirt, who is he to judge, at least she’s comfortable, and those stains show her effort of being a lousy housewife.
“I’m sorry.” He apologizes for the second time in a span of 4 minutes, walks closer to her, a few inches away from grabbing her hips, she immediately hovers her hand on his chest, not even touching him, signaling him to get away.  “Ew, did you smoke?” She covers her nose with the back of her hand, before turning and walking towards the bedroom while shutting off the living room lights. “Clean yourself up and go to bed, and turn of the rest of the lights, we’re paying too much for the bills.”
A small breath of frustration leaves his nose, she slams the door shut which he doesn’t even flinch, he’s so used to her being the worst human being he’s ever met.
He puts his jacket down on the couch and throws himself down on it, his head falls back and his eyes just close for a split second.
Music from the club still playing in his head when he remembers your breath taking figure walking away from him, your back explicitly making a show for him, he wished he could touch your tattoo with his fingertips at least. And what you didn’t see was his eyes roaming around your body, as if he’s not believing his eyes actually seeing someone that looks exactly like the woman he imagined having in his teenage years.
His eyes so passionately with high concentration focus on your calves and thighs, up to your ass that he wants to dive in so desperately, he admires your skin color, the small birthmark on the back of your thigh, your chest rising when your breathing quickens, up to your long neck begging for his fingers to just wrap around and for his lips to suck on, up to your lips pursing with each word and your tongue moving to your lower lip when you look at him, then finally his eyes met yours, and he finds the way you look at him insanely hot, he was never looked at like this, and he’s so positive that you both are on the same page.
His eyebrows scrunch in a frown when he rewinds the night.
Did you just flirt with someone when you’re married?  He thinks before scoffing, totally forgetting the tought that he started filing for divorce a couple weeks ago, without even letting his wife know, it’s the last thing he wanted for his son to experience his parents getting a divorce, but his marriage went down the pooper and it’s just a lost cause.
The lawyer said it’s going to take some time, especially when there’s a baby between them, but still, is he allowed to flirt with someone while still being involved in a marriage?
But fuck, what you actually do to him? He finds himself palming his jeans, slowly but surely unzipping it to make himself more comfortable, the bulge in his pants is way too tight for his liking.
He gets up and makes his way to the bathroom, undressing in seconds and getting under the running warm water, his hands move to his body lotion before he puts some into his palm and rubs it all over his sculpted big body, his hands going slowly to his already erect cock, he grabs the head tightly in between his thumb and index finger, stroking it slowly, making sure to take his time to feel the pleasure, his eyes even close and all he can see is you
Namjoon was a man with a fucking wild brain and an even wilder imagination, sudden scenarios go through his brain, you dancing, even him touching you, his eyes close tighter, not totally satisfied with his vanilla imagination, it needs to be harder.
And in a snap of a finger he can see himself fucking your tight pussy from behind, ruining you and using you to release all his frustration, he imagines kissing your spine and running his tongue on it. His messed up thoughts show him your mouth around his monstrously large dick, choking on it, and that’s when he totally gives in and grows weaker, his muscles relaxing when he shoots continuous white ribbons of cum on the shower floor, his breath going quicker when he releases, he tenses again and a small groan escapes his plump lips when he looks down at his cock still shooting cum, this has never happened with him before and it makes him wonder on the spot, fuck what are you doing to him.
His palm automatically leans on the wall for support, he starts breathing slowly to control his breath. He came hard imagining you in his hands, which if you knew you would be flattered.
He cleans himself up and gets out of the shower, gets dressed and rushes to bed, he has to pick up Jay from Ilsan tomorrow.

bookends, bestfriends, deadends
Pairing + WC: Jason Grace x reader, 1.6k Warnings: slow burn, once again and as always with my love Jason this is NOT canon-compliant, Jason may be a tiny bit ooc but I tired Summary: In the months between saving Hera and setting sail for New Rome, Jason finds himself making a friend Authors note: ok, y’all, here’s the deal; I took a nap and woke up with an idea, so I started writing; then I realized I needed set up, so I wrote this. Now I have a full fic that doesn’t include my original idea, so I will have to make pt: 2, but at least it’s already almost all the way written
Tumblr media
Camp was far too busy this year; even for the off-season, it felt like there were campers everywhere. With all the bustle, it was hard to find a moment of peace. That’s why you’d taken to the woods that day. Following the path you’d walked a million times to a little outcrop of ruins not far from the beach, deep enough to not be disturbed. You’d taken a thick blanket and draped it over a vaguely couch-shaped block of stone ages ago to use as a reading nook. It was calm and peaceful and empty, usually.
This time, when you got close enough to see your little piece of peace, there was already someone there. A blonde boy with a scar on his lip sitting on your faux couch and squinting at the book in his hand. Jason Grace. Of course, you knew who he was, everyone knew of him and Piper and Leo, all working to get ready for the next great prophecy.
Sneaking up on a former Roman soldier didn’t seem like the best plan, so you’d spoken out. “Guess this place isn’t so secret after all,” geez, what an opener.
Jason looked up with a start and got to his feet before you could say anything else. “Hi, hey, sorry, is this your spot? I wasn’t sure who’s it was, so I stayed to read some. I can go.”
“Oh no, please, you don’t have to,” you were quick to put up your hands and stop him from leaving. You two hadn’t necessarily talked before, but he had always seemed nice at meals and campfires, if not a little awkward. “You were here first. I can leave if you want to be alone.”
Jason paused, it seemed he was actually taking you in now, noticing the book in your hand, Don Quixote as opposed to the copy of War and Peace he held. “I don’t mind company,” he offered you a small nervous smile, it was so pure you had to just stare at it for a second before responding.
“Neither would I,” you finally said, returning the smile. You walked over and sat down tucking your legs under you and leaving plenty of room for Jason to sit on the other side.
He joined and read next to you for what felt like both hours and minutes. Two days later, you had beaten him there, so when he arrived, you smiled and scooted to the left, giving him room again on your right. Over the next month, you crossed paths at the ruins what must have been a dozen times. There was never much conversation; it was more of a silent agreement to enjoy each other’s company, and each day, the distance between your shoulders seemed to get ever so slightly smaller.
After a while, you got comfortable being directly next to him. Your shoulders would brush each time Jason moved to turn the page, and you couldn't help but notice how warm and strong he was. Silent meetings became small discussions about your current read, which turned into talks about other books you’d recommend to each other, which eventually morphed into a solid friendship. You would invite him to eat with your cabin since he had no one else at his. He would update you on the progress of the ship and the quest, you even got to know the other campers involved.
Over the next few months, your lives became completely intertwined. You spent most of your day with each other. You watched him train for the quest, pushing his limits in sparring sessions until he was too exhausted to do much of anything. You would drag him out to your spot in the woods on days when he’d gotten so focused he had to be forced to take a break. You’d even tried to help him get some memories back. He would eat with you, read with you, help you with whatever chores you had around camp, anything to spend more time with together.
He was the first person you turned to when you had something to say. He was the only one who remembered which campfire songs were your favorites or which books you’d reread depending on your mood. You cared about him so deeply, and you weren’t even sure how you’d come to feel so much in so little time. You truly hadn’t realized how much you needed him around you until you thought about just how soon he’d be leaving.
Of course, he would go back to Camp Jupiter; you knew that. This was never meant to be permanent; you were sure he missed his old life, his old friends, his old home. But part of you, somewhere in the deepest, most selfish part of your heart, wanted him to stay. You wanted him to forget about Rome, and Jupiter, and the quest. You wanted him to stay here with the strawberry fields and the books and the beach and with you. You wanted him to forget his sense of duty to a place that never cared and stay with someone who would give their whole heart away just to see him be happy for a moment longer. It was a feeling that filled you with guilt every time it crossed your mind.
It had occupied your thoughts nearly the entire day when Jason came to your cabin that evening. He knocked on the door until one of your siblings answered, and they called you over, muttering something about stupid and lovesick and so annoying that you hadn’t totally caught.
You stepped onto the porch and closed the cabin door, leaving Jason and you alone in the dim light of the setting son. He was handsome as ever, a fact that you had resolved not to dwell on; plenty of people found their closest friends to be stunningly beautiful, it wasn’t a big deal.
In fact, it was totally normal for someone to notice exactly when their best friend had skipped their usual haircut and started letting the military style grow or how their eyes exploded with color when the sun hit them just right. And, of course, there was no deeper reason for why you would pick up on every scrape or bruise he’d gotten from training. You were just hyper-observant, never mind that it only applied to one person.
As you took him in, scanning for the weariness you so often saw and he so often dismissed, you noticed more than anything how nervous he was. “What’s up?”
“Hey, um, I just wanted to, well.” He took a deep breath and let his words spill out a mile a minute. He told you that the Argo II would be ready to fly any day now. He told you how they were going to find Percy and how the first place they were going to check was New Rome. He brought up his old life, a life he wanted to remember, a life he thought he would remember when he got back there. These were all things you’d know and that filled you with dread, but you let him talk without interrupting. His rambling soon turned to a topic you haven’t expected, it turned to you. He told you how important you were to him, how much you’d helped him adjust to life at camp, and how much he appreciated everything you’d done for him.
As he went on and on, you felt your heart begin to pound. The way he was talking lit a spark inside your gut, and the borderline desperation in his voice made you dare to hope. The emotion in his eyes made you think maybe, just maybe, he felt the same kind of connection that you felt with him. You could tell it was going somewhere important, somewhere that made him nervous and hopefully at the exact same time.
“I guess I just realized while we were planning in the bunker,” he began to close in on his point. “How important you are to me, and I can’t imagine what it’d be like without you. You can say no of course, it’s a lot to ask of anyone but,” he took another breath. “Do you want to come with me to New Rome?”
That wasn’t exactly what you were expecting. The funny feeling in your gut shifted and morphed, flashing through disappointment for a brief moment. As Jason waited for an answer, you had to process exactly what he’d asked. Going back to New Rome meant he was going back to his old life, a fact you were all too aware of, but now, maybe you didn’t have to lose him to it. He still wanted you by his side. He still wanted you to be a part of his life.
“Yes,” you finally replied. “Yes, of course, I’ll go,” you watch the relief wash over him, his nerves visibly dispersing as one of the widest smiles you’d ever seen etched itself across his face.
In the next moment, he wrapped his arms around you. It was a bone-crushing hug that squeezed the air from your lungs, and you wrapped your own arms around him as tightly as you could. “You have no idea how happy that makes me,” he whispered to you as you tried to stop your heart from exploding. This wasn’t how you wanted it, but at least for now, this would be enough.

Tumblr media
“That soon?” your group manager sighed a few feet ahead of your desk. He'd been frustrated at whatever conversation he was having over the phone for the last ten minutes now. You tried not to pay it any mind but it was getting harder now that it got him so worked up his voice could be heard through the entire office.
Your coworker Doyoung looked at you and looked like he wanted to cry. You tilted your head a little confused at what happened to him.
“If he’s this mad about something you just know the rest of us are going to get dragged in too?” he groaned before you could ask him what’s up.
“Who is he even talking to?” you asked him while rolling your chair away from your computer.
“The boss” Doyoung sighed. “The boss as in the ceo you idiot” he continued when you still looked confused.
You mouthed a silent ‘oh’ quickly understanding why your boss was so frustrated. You didn't know much about the ceo except for the fact that he only recently took over. His father retired less than a year ago and you all got the announcement that the current ceo took over only three months ago.
The Yoon company was huge and had establishments all over the country, even some internationally. You figured he would eventually visit each office to oversee what everyone was doing (read: stress everyone out for a twenty minute visit).
Before you could groan at the thought of it your manager got off the phone and clapped to get everyone’s attention. “So that was the ceo’s assistant” he said tiredly, “he’s coming this Friday”
It was almost comedic how instantly everybody complained. You couldn’t blame them. That was three days away, was he insane?
“The problem with Mr Yoon is that if you’re not ahead of the work, you’re behind. So even if we’re for the most part caught up with everything, he’ll likely find a way to complain about our branch.” You watched your manager scan through his personal spreadsheet that kept track of everyone’s work and current projects before he turned to you. “y/n I hate to throw this on you but you and Mingyu are the only ones not currently working on any specific project. Do you think the two of you could get started on that project for the Yang family?”
You knew what he was talking about. It was a project that you were supposed to work on in a month. “If we get it started early maybe he’ll cut us some slack on taking our sweet time with that project for Miss Park”
You nodded, agreeing to get started with the presentation for it. You’d essentially be doing this alone because Mingyu was still on a leave for visiting his family and he’d get back after the ceo was done visiting.
Tumblr media
The next two days you spent getting less than three hours of sleep. At first Doyoung encouraged you to just half-ass the presentation but you knew that there was still the off chance that the ceo still went through the work thoroughly, if he did you don’t know how you’d be able to explain why the work was done at such a low level.
You managed to scrape together getting most of it done. The entire project was nowhere near done but considering the actual meeting for it was two months away, getting the presentation done already would surely put you and the office in the ceo’s good books.
Sipping your coffee, you trudged to your desk and stifled a yawn as you settled your things down. Looking at the calendar on your computer you confirmed it was Friday, meaning the ceo that made your last few days hell would be coming today.
You arrived here earlier than usual so you could make sure everything was set up correctly and quickly get one of the supervisors to double check the presentation.
“Look alive, his car just pulled up” Doyoung muttered, walking around your desk to get to his own and get his own belongings settled.
You sighed, mentally preparing yourself for the day. You just knew it’d be a long one.
The double doors pushed open, revealing who you assumed was the ceo. You knew he was young but you didn’t think he’d be that handsome, and oddly.. familiar? You didn’t even realize you were staring until Doyoung tapped you and beckoned you to get back to work.
“Everyone, this is Mr Yoon, the new ceo” your manager stepped aside to allow the ceo to take the center.
“It’s nice to meet you all, my name is Jeonghan. I look forward to seeing what everyone in this branch is capable of” he smiled.
‘Jeonghan’ talked to your manager before sauntering over to your desk, a polite business smile on his face. “I understand you are the one working on the Yang family project Miss..” he looked for your name tag. When he saw it you swear something in his face changed when he sneered speaking your name.
He looked back to your face, observing you before the corner of his lip quirked up. “It would seem like you are this branch’s most capable employee, Miss y/n”
“Oh I wouldn’t say that-” you tried to object.
“Come with me. Bring the presentation materials with you” he turned, not willing to hear any objection from your manager.
You hadn’t practiced presenting it, barely rereading any of the actual information on the slides. For the most part, you’d have to wing it.
As expected, the presentation was somewhat of a mess. The lack of sleep got to you so you weren’t as engaging with the presentation as you’d usually be, on top of that whenever you looked over at Jeonghan it felt like you were tripping over your words even more. It almost felt like he was staring and smirking at you on purpose.
By the time you were done with the presentation it was time for your break. You needed to unwind after the morning you had, scrolling through your phone and checking for any food places nearby that were open. You’d forgotten to pack a lunch and usually you’d deal with it, drinking an extra coffee instead but you desperately needed to just eat anything good to get your mind off of your annoying ceo.
Before you called and ordered, you figured you’d ask if anybody else wanted something too. You first asked your manager and were about to ask Doyoung except the ceo decided to strike up a conversation with him. Too hungry to wait you decided to just walk up and ask, it was your break anyway who cared?
“Hey Doyoung, I’m headed out for lunch. You want me to grab you anything to eat?” you asked him, not paying your ceo any mind while you felt him staring at you.
“Sure. I’ll text you, thanks” he smiled.
Before you headed off you decided to ask the ceo too since he seemed like the type to hold a grudge if you didn’t. “I’m alright, thank you for the offer”
“Here’s your food Doyoung” you smiled tiredly while you handed your coworker the bag.
You sat at the table with your own lunch, getting your food out and scrolling through your phone. You got a notification from that dating app you’d been using for a couple months now, answering the texts from the guy you’d been texting back and forth for a while now. His name was Minseok, you were originally supposed to go out with him a few days ago but had to take a raincheck to work on the project.
Just as you were about to text back that you too were excited for the date tonight, you felt your ceo looming over your shoulder.
“y/n. After you’re done with your break, come see me in my office” Jeonghan said plainly before stalking off.
You gulped, trying to shake off the nerves before focusing on your meal.
Tumblr media
You weren’t sure if you wanted the break to end quickly or drag on. On one hand you wanted to get whatever Jeonghan was going to say over and done with, but on the other hand you didn’t want to have to actually deal with whatever he was going to say.
When your break did end, you were hesitant to see him, contemplating outside of his door for a few moments before sighing and biting the bullet. You straightened out your attire before walking into his office and walking toward his desk.
“You asked me to see you, Sir?” you smiled curtly.
“Take a seat” he pointed in front of the desk, opposite from him. “I’ve been thinking, I eventually need to stay in one branch and I want that branch to be this one” he tapped his desk while he spoke uninterested in his own words.
“The reason I’m telling all of this to you,” he circled his desk to stand directly at you. Eyes looking up at his, you gulped taking in his appearance. You really did not like him but you couldn’t deny he was good looking, bangs falling neatly over his eyes and looming over you like you were his prey.
“I’m telling you this because I want you to be my assistant” he smiled, despite that you felt like it was a trap.
Your mouth went dry and you forced out your next words, “assistant?”
“Don’t make that confused face, it makes you look stupid,” he laughed, causing your blood to boil. “You have excellent organizational skills, I could really use that in an assistant”
As much as you hated his guts, it was a good opportunity. If you worked up from his assistant you could eventually be a branch manager yourself one day. But the thought of working with him seemed like hell. Still, you bit back the bitter taste in your mouth, “I’d be delighted to, Sir. Thank you for the opportunity”
“Excellent” Jeonghan clapped, “your first task will be planning out my schedule for the new year. Make yourself comfortable and work at that spare desk over there” he dropped his planner and notes from his former assistant onto your lap before heading out of the office.
You stared at the mess for a few seconds, feeling yourself get more annoyed by the second. “Oh and y/n” he popped his head back in the door, “you’re not allowed to clock out until all of that is organized, understand?”
And he left again before you could confirm or oppose his decision. You decided it was useless trying to argue and settled with texting Minseok that you’d have to take another raincheck. Judging by the way he read the message but didn’t reply, it was safe to assume that it might not ever be rescheduled.
Hours passed and you were still only about halfway through planning the ceo’s schedule. You knew everyone was clocking out when you saw Doyoung wave pitifully at you through the glass door.
“You haven’t changed one bit, you know that?” Jeonghan piped up when the entire floor left for the night. In all honesty you’d forgotten he was still here considering he napped at his desk the first chance he got.
“What are you talking about?” you frowned. What did he mean? When did he ever know you prior to this?
“You never speak up, do you? Even back in high school you never did” he laughed mockingly.
High school? Okay, what was wrong with- oh. Now you remember. Yoon Jeonghan, you don’t know how it took so long to put two and two together. You were both in the same honors class in high school and constantly competed for the top spot. You didn’t necessarily resent him much at first but given how he was constantly pushed by his family to be the best, he loathed you for coming in his way of it. Because of this, he eventually made your life a living hell too, so you graduated hoping you’d never see him again.
“Remember now, huh? God I hated you, always being such a nuisance” he sneered down at you. You didn’t process him closer to you until he leaned over your desk and now face to face with you. “How does it feel to know you ended up below me anyway?”
You didn’t want to start an argument with your new boss, especially considering you’d be working with him at all times now. But you remembered his comment from earlier and it annoyed you how he spoke to you like you were inferior to him.
“It doesn’t feel like anything. Because I know that I at least earned my spot here, all you did was happen to be born in a good family” you watched as his smirk turned sour, anger crossing his face before he laughed lowly.
“You’ve got some nerve for talking to your boss like that. I could fire you right now, you want that y/n?”
The taller man laughed at the fear that flashed in your eyes. “Oh you poor thing, ran out of arguments?” he pouted condescendingly. “You were so confident a second ago, is one little threat all it takes to mess you up?”
You didn’t respond to his taunts, biting back your tongue so you couldn’t respond. It was pointless, he wasn’t the type to let you go easily if you argued back and he wasn’t worth losing your job over.
“You’re really boring me now y/n” he chuckled, “come on fight back a little, yeah?”
You turned to look at his face but gasped when you realized he’d gotten even closer, his face mere centimeters away from your own. “Jeonghan” you sighed, eyes fluttering shut to avoid his hard stare.
“Who gave you permission to call me by my name? You’re just my employee y/n. You worked so hard when we were younger just for you to be my lowly employee” he laughed in your face.
His words caused small tears to swell in your eyes and you tried to blink them away before he noticed them.
“Isn’t that just so cute?” Your boss cooed, wiping at your tears, “don’t cry baby”
You let out a small gasp at the pet name, desperately hoping he wouldn’t notice.
“You like that, huh?” Jeonghan observed your face, drinking in your appearance, looking a mess as a result of his harsh words and treatment. “Wonder what else you like” he mumbled, slim fingers moving from your cheeks to slide over your neck, eventually settling on your shoulder.
“Get back to work, yeah?” he left before you could say anything else. You watched as he walked away, taking this as your chance to leave. He could ridicule for it tomorrow but you couldn’t stay here any longer, not when you felt the need to kiss him right there.
Get a grip! You hated him! And he hated you, albeit that realisation did sting a little.
Ugh and you couldn’t even avoid him anymore, you were literally his assistant now there was no avoiding him. Whatever, he’d get bored of trying to get a rise out of you in a month or less so all you had to do was put up with him until then.

I think you missed one member of Rob's crew. Their friend Jason Todd who comes round every so often with pizza and is actually rich or something.
A new neighbor moved in across the hall.
Rob didn't think much of it. People came in and out all the time. Traveling workers, runaway kids, aimless drifters. Half the tenants were squatters at any given time yet here he was paying rent like a total sucker.
He spat into the sink and rinsed. In the chipped mirror cabinet, he inspected himself. His rust-colored stubble was coming in, but not so quickly that he needed to shave today. He shrugged and threw on a clean shirt.
In the living room—if he could call it that, since it practically overlapped the kitchen—Milo entertained the kids with a mobile game while Gene was reading an Edgar Allen Poe book falling apart at the spine. They were the only other permanent residents besides the Steeler family. The rest of the crew came in and out as they pleased.
Rob said, "Kids, did you eat breakfast yet?"
The two six-year-olds nodded. The fifteen-year-old gave an affirmative grunt, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"What'd you have?" Rob asked.
"Donuts!" answered Gunner.
He raised an eyebrow. "Donuts?"
"Jay from across the hall brought them," said Jackie. "He also gave us these special donut hats. Look!"
Paper crinkled as she unfolded a Krispy Kreme hat and put it on top of her frizzy hair.
"I see." He nodded.
"Don't worry, I tested it first," Gene said.
"Thanks."
As Rob poured his morning coffee, he glanced at the box of a dozen donuts. A few of them were missing, naturally, but there was still a wide range of flavors. Next to it was an unfinished thank you card from Jackie, presumably before she got distracted.
Normally, he wouldn't think twice about the neighbors. But this one—this Jay who wouldn't even tell them his last name—had been on Rob's mind since the first "anonymous" free pizza delivery a week ago. Of course, with online ordering there was always a digital footprint, which Mac tracked to the apartment across the hall. After that, there was the "anonymous" Chinese takeout.
Then, Jay started talking to them and it was the standard neighborly conversations down by the mail room. When he asked Rob what he did for a living, Rob answered vaguely that he was freelancing. Gene was unemployed and he could outright say it. Jay also asked the kids what they wanted for the upcoming holidays when the complex residents were setting up the Christmas tree. Jackie wanted a pony and Gunner wanted a monster truck, and for a moment it seemed like Jay was in serious consideration.
Still, Jay was a stranger. As the encounters continued, it became an unspoken rule that either Rob or Gene be with the kids when the young man was around. One could never be too cautious in Gotham.
Rob finished his coffee and debated taking a donut, but ultimately decided against it. He grabbed his jacket, keys, and pack of cigarettes, telling Milo and the kids (mostly Milo) not to make a mess in the ten minutes he would be gone.
He didn't like smoking on the balcony. It was too close to the children and he didn't want them to get sick. Worse, he didn't want them to pick up the same dirty habit that he only got hooked on because he was a dumb kid that didn't know any better.
He trekked four floors down only to find, lo and behold, he wasn't alone.
A cigarette hung from Jay's fingers as he leaned against the brick wall at the entryway. "'Sup."
Rob acknowledged him with a short nod before lighting his own.
Rob glanced at Jay. It wasn't his first time observing but he always liked to note the subtle changes. The young man—about a decade younger than Rob—sported only a red sweatshirt and grease-stained jeans despite the cold. Since last time, Jay had gained a bruise on his cheek and a cut on his forehead just under his white streak. Rob didn't know what his neighbor did for a living other than it left him with a different mottling of injuries every week.
Jay spoke. "Ever heard of third-hand smoke?"
Rob. "What's that?"
"Firsthand is what we're doing right now, basically inhaling these cancer sticks. Secondhand would be if someone was standing close to us while we do it. Thirdhand smoke is the smell left on you after you go back inside and it's potentially harmful," he said. "You have kids, right?"
"The hell kind of question is that? You've met then."
"I'm just saying, you might wanna consider stopping by the laundry before you go back up."
"Fantastic. Another way I'm a shit dad." Rob grunted and took a drag.
Jay flicked some ashes off. "I know a think or two about shit fathers and the fact that you're worried about being one means you're on the right track."
"How can I be a good dad when I can't even provide them breakfast?"
"I asked your older kid and he said it was fine."
"Milo isn't mine and he's not the one in charge. Next time, take it up with me."
"Duly noted."
Rob took another long drag and ran his fingers through his hair, feeling the past two days' worth of residue from not washing. It caked under his nails like week-old bacon grease on unwashed dishes. It was disgusting. He was disgusting. All of him.
The sleeping around. The accidental pregnancy with a woman he barely knew. The fights. Him throwing her out into a rainstorm. Becoming a widower before he turned thirty with two kids who will never remember her. The backbreaking jobs. Not being good enough to not be laid off. The sketchy investment and losing nearly everything. The sneaking, the breaking, the taking.
And the excuses. All the ways he convinced himself he was in the right.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Jay asked.
"I doubt it's worth a even penny," Rob answered. "I've just been wondering lately what my kids will remember me as when they get older. The business I'm in doesn't have a good reputation and I don't want that to be the first thing that comes to mind when they think of me—someone who only takes. I dunno why I'm telling you all this."
"Hey, it's a valid concern. The work I do also leaves me with those types of questions."
"What do you do?" he asked.
"A little bit of everything," Jay replied vaguely. "But back to what I was saying: your kids aren't gonna remember your day job. But I know they'll remember you putting them on your shoulders to hang the tinsel last weekend."
"I admit, you got a point." Rob flattened the cigarette butt under his boot before tossing it in the nearly trash can. "Anyway, thanks for co-hosting my morning pity party, but I have some errands to run. Starting with laundry."
Jay smiled. "I'll see you around."
"Hopefully," he said, smiling back.
There was something familiar about his neighbor, but Rob couldn't put his finger on it.
Ah, well. At least this one came with free food. Rob would be an idiot if he didn't take a donut while the washing machine wrung the smoke out his clothes.

Alrighty so this is the post on lichen dyes!
this particular bath of lichen dyes was originally started over a year ago scraping a tentatively-ID'd lecanora and/or ochrolechia genus lichen off of a fallen branch (remember, don't gather lichen when it's still growing! it's very slow growing and easy to overharvest)
to start off, this particular type of dye is made through the ammonia-fermentation method, also known as ammonia maceration. No actual bacterial fermentation occurs though. Rather, the compound orcinol (and precursor compound to orcinols) react with ammonia (N2) and oxygen to form the compound orcein (also called orchil/archil) which is what makes the final dye!
this process takes anywhere from 3 weeks to 16+ weeks depending on the lichen species, its constituent acids, the temperature, and the frequency of aeration.
Tumblr media
This batch was set aside for several months and neglected a good bit, but it still works. I strained out the crumbled lichens (which i set aside for later) and diluted it 1:4 as instructed by a very good book called Lichen Dyes: The New Source Book by Karen Diadick Casselman. This book is basically omnipresent everywhere you see lichen dyes mentioned, especially the orcein-based dyes. I also used several websites/videos/papers and such that i've hunted down over various internet crawls.
I use an old coffee pot for this as it's both a non-reactive material (glass) and is built to withstand heat. Ironically i also scraped the lichens off the branch using a tool i made out of a metal band from the broken handle of this same coffee pot!

I decided to dye some eri silk cakes that i fluffed up and scoured. these have been very good at absorbing dye in the past so i would hopefully get a good result from them. As lichens are a substantive dye i don't have to put a mordant on them, but i did soak them in an alum solution just before adding them to the dye bath to hopefully maximize dye uptake as well as improve fastness as lichen dyes are also fugitive and can fade in sunlight.
Substantive dyes contain mordants already embedded in them; fugitive dyes are a bit fuzzy to me but my understanding is they end up trapped in the fiber instead of actually bonding to the fiber in a stronger way. Mordants are used to help the dye "bite" onto the fiber better, improving both fastness (the ability of a due to resist fading from sunlight/washing/time) and the brightness of a color. Alum is useful in that it typically doesn't affect the end color of a dye more than simply making it slightly more strong!
Tumblr media
it was pretty successful i'd say! i warmed up the dyebath, added the silk, let it simmer for a few hours, let it cool down overnight, and then warmed it back up the next day for a few hours; then, when it cooled, i took it out, let it dry, then rinsed it, and let it dry a second time. At that point, it was ready for spinning!
Tumblr media
It was a lovely pink color that's not fully captured by the camera like most dyes, and eri silk is lovely because you can spin the clouds directly and easily without carding and make lovely relatively threadlike yarn
Tumblr media
this was the first skein i got! i love how shiny the silk is. Some dyes can get really purple or even magenta-like!
next, i had the leftover lichens that i had set aside. They were a crumbly texture and dark black and i dried them out, crushed them up more, set them back in a jar, added more ammonia and water, and did the ammonia fermentation method a second time! this was after reading about the method for making french purple, and while this is definitely a very pale imitation of the method, the double-soak is the key feature here
here it is (on the left); it was already way darker purple than an in-progress lichen dye i had yet to crack open and use
Tumblr media
speaking of which, heres a shot of various test lichens i had while working on this, you can see the blue-capped jar that has the second-soaked lichens. the foam will often give a preview of whether or not the dye will be red/purple or not!
Tumblr media
Here it is, i forget how long i let it soak but i think it was a bit over a week. i strained the material out, diluted it, and then repeated the same warm/cool/warm/cool/dry/rinse/dry method with more eri silk
Tumblr media
And below you can see the difference, it's definitely slight but still cool!
Tumblr media
the left is from the original dyebath, the right is the second-soaked one. the first one is more salmon-colored while the second is a tad more blue-purpled!
I'm extremely excited about this, these dyes have such a fascinating history and have multiple historical uses everywhere from florentine orchil to norwegian korkje to scottish cudbear and more, and it was often used in tandem with the roman murex/tyrian purple dyes that come from a mussel. Some folks used the lichens to pre-dye the fabric before dyeing with tyrian purple, both to stretch the expensive tyrian purple and to make the end color more vibrant. It's all such a great topic that's mightily confusing and could take up a post of its own, same with the underlying chemistry of what makes these dyes work in the first place!
Anyways that's all for this post, i have more i'm working on involving actually turning these dyes into paint that i'll hopefully turn into a post on its own soon! I've also got other lichen dyes I'm waiting to get through the ammonia fermentation process that will hopefully give other colors, whenever that may be!

July Kinkfest Days 4 & 5
The Sandman || Dreamling (Dream of the Endless/Hob Gadling) || Rated E || 939 words
Prompts: Possessive Sex | Body Worship | “I had a dream about you.”  - Exhibitionism | Aftercare | “I’ve always wanted to try this.”
Warnings (in addition to the prompts above): getting together, jealous Dream, rough sex, biting and other post-sex superficial injuries
Author's Notes: Two days combo platter! Five out of six prompts! Whoo!
As his lover dozes, Dream traces the marks left on Hob’s skin. Not the scars, but the recent ones, bruises and welts and scrapes, left not so long ago by Dream’s fingers and lips and teeth. And as he touches each one he checks that it is superficial, urges each gently into healing, and memories float to the surface.
It started with one of the New Inn’s regulars, Eliot Sutton, a New Yorker at the end of two years of post-doctoral work in astrophysics and cosmology, who had sought work abroad as he was fleeing his broken engagement and family strife. Dream knows these details immediately upon looking at the man, but what actually matters is that he and Hob are in the back of the pub, sharing a table and a pint, papers and books spread out before them, working in a familiar and companionable silence.
On Hob’s hip, long finger-shaped bruises are starting to purple. Dream can hear the echo of Hob’s sob of pleasure, of relief, as Dream finally sinks his cock into his loosened, slick hole. “Yes! Sweetchristyes!”
As Dream gets closer to the table he learns more: Eliot Sutton has a black cat back at his apartment that he adopted from a local shelter because she was twelve and looked like she needed a friend. He has a collection of old manuscripts on Babylonian astronomy that probably should be in a museum. The man reaches to take a sip of his ale and spends a moment staring at Hob. Dream picks up the edges of an erotic daydream, no the memory of a dr-
“I had a dream about you last night.” The man interrupts Dream’s thoughts as much as Hob’s work and both stop mid-movement.
Long red welts along Hob’s back are receding, no longer as sharp-edged and raised as when Dream’s nails made them, scrabbling for purchase as Hob bent the Dreamlord in half as he fucked him with deep, rolling thrusts. “Let him see. Fuck, invite the entire college, the entire city… let them all see how I lose myself in you. Only you.”
“Did you now?” Hob takes his own pint in hand, downing a large swallow. “Let me guess, a nightmare about me, a lowly history professor, grading your uni papers?”
Eliot very clearly lets his gaze get dark, his voice suggestive. “Not quite. Although it did involve a desk.”
Hob blushes. “El…”
More nail marks, clear crescents in sets of four, overlap each other across Hob’s shoulders, a few crusted with dry blood. Dream cleans them with a careful touch and hears his own growls in his ears as Hob drops to his knees in front of him. “Is this how the most devoted priests feel when faced with their god?” He nuzzles into the base of Dream’s leaking cock, licks tentatively, making them both shudder. “Willing to exalt, to glorify, to praise, with mouth and tongue, with words and breath, with body and soul…” He presses the flat of his tongue to the underside, making Dream gasp and claw into his shoulders as he licks a line up to the tip. When next Hob speaks his lips brush the head with each word. “I would worship you, my Dream.”
Any further answer is interrupted when Hob catches sight of Dream in his peripheral vision and his face breaks into a smile wider than any he has seen directed at Eliot. “My friend!” Hob stands to greet him, to bring him to the table with a hand on his shoulder. “It has been less than a week since we last met! I was not expecting to see you so soon! Not that I am complaining, mind you – I welcome your presence, day or night.” Hob turns to his table-mate. “Eliot! This is my oldest and dearest friend D-”
“Morpheus.” Dream interrupts, putting out a hand to shake as is current custom. Hob blinks at Dream, confusion passing across his face for only the slightest moment, before he motions for Dream to sit with him in his side of the booth.
Eliot shakes Dream’s hand amiably enough, but his eyes narrow at how close Dream slides in next to Hob.
Smaller bruises litter the top of Hob’s shoulders, his collarbones, underneath his jaw. Dream touches each one and remembers its unique taste, remembers making them with his hungry mouth as he unbuttons Hob’s shirt. They are barely inside his flat, crowded into the corner behind the shut front door. “Oh fuck,” Hob moans, arching into Dream’s touch, tugging at Dream’s hair. “If only I had known, love… I would have ventured to make you jealous sooner!”
Eliot leaves not ten minutes later and Hob gives Dream a pointed look. “Was that really necessary?”
Dream stares right back. “He dreams of having you. Not just carnally. Intimate in all senses of the word.”
One of Hob’s eyebrows makes a break for his hairline. “And that is a problem because…?” But he must see something in Dream’s expression, because Hob leans in. “Does that make you…” Hob licks his lips and Dream’s eyes follow the motion of their own volition. “... are you jealous, Dream?”
The last bruise is a nebula of colors along the side of Hob’s nape, created through repeated attention from Dream’s mouth as he fucks Hob through another of his own orgasms. Hob’s cock has long since been exhausted, but still he pleads for Dream to take him, to fill him, to use him. Still he wishes only to be a vessel for Dream’s pleasure. So as Dream drifts downward, finally sated, he purrs into Hob’s ear. “Mine.”

Our Violent Delights Will Not Have Violent Ends: The Twilight Saga Rewrite (Book 1, Twilight) | Part 1.
Summary: Y/N Swan is just like every other girl and she likes it that way. Normal is fantastic. Normal creates a functioning member of society. Normal is the reason she moved to a small town to live with her police officer father... only to find out that she gets the farthest thing from what she wanted. \\ This is a re-write of Twilight. Basically if I had been Stephenie Meyer and wrote Twilight. I will be combining some of the movie and book and the pace will be more like the movies. Not terribly high word count like the books. We might equal one book's word count when we finish doing all four of them. Hope you enjoy!
Warnings for the Series: light violence, light angst, light smut
Warnings for the Chapter: none
Pairing: Edward Cullen x reader, Jacob Black x reader
Word Count: 3.5k
Author's Note: If there are "I" written anywhere in the story, please let me know. I'm posting this story on Wattpad in the I form so I might forget to erase one or two here. Enjoy being casted in the feature role of Bella Swan. Let's go:
Tumblr media
A police car pulled up in front of you as you waited outside Seattle-Tacoma International. To think, only four months ago you were trying to purchase plane tickets for spring break. Only you wanted to go to New York with the rest of your classmates. The last place you were ever thinking of was Washington. The state, not even D.C.
And more importantly not Forks, Washington. But you promised your mom that you could handle this. The only thing worse than that small town for the entire year was traveling so much you might as well be homeschooled. When your mom remarried her now husband, Phil, he played baseball for the Phoenix team.
Phil’s good but he wasn’t good enough to be traded around. You thought your whole life would be Arizona. Until Florida called. And your sweet stepfather and lovingly erratic mother packed up everything before suddenly remembering you had school. So moving to Forks had been a you decision but you're not sure how good of a decision that was.
The car in front of you rolled down its window until you could see your dad. Charlie flashed a smile that you struggled to return. He’s great. You've spent every single summer with him and almost every one of those summers was in Forks.
But two months is a lot different from the entire school year. You knew only a few people that would be going to Forks High School. A pang hit your heart when you thought about your friends again. You guys promised to call but you'd probably fall out of each other’s lives anyway. But you tried to smile once more, putting your suitcases in the back of the police car and pulling on a thick wool sweater over your shirt and overalls.
As soon as you slid into the passenger seat, it started to rain — a stark reminder that this wasn’t Phoenix.
You could feel Charlie’s head keep turning to the side to look at you. Like your dad in more ways than one, the start to small talk was awkward for you. The two of you went back and forth in a silent dance until Charlie saved you from speaking about the weather.
“Your hair has gotten longer.”
You grabbed a piece of your now shoulder length hair. Two years ago, in the spur of the moment, you had shaved your head to start over. It was the moment after that you decided you would never do that again. Charlie had to suffer the period of you not being able to look at yourself in the mirror. You looked like an egg. It took dedication but your hair was now long and damage free.
“Yeah, I’ve tried to stop using heat completely. Except the blow dryer.”
While starting small talk might have been difficult, once Charlie and you were talking no one could get you to stop. The conversation was still going as the car passed the ‘Welcome to Forks’ sign that should have read population: too damn small instead of an actual number — and even when we got out of the car and into the house. Your room wasn’t terribly different from other summers but you noticed drawers and wardrobes that weren’t there before. You guessed when one permanently moves they suddenly need storage for their things. Charlie even cleared more bathroom space.
That was probably the one thing you hated about this house. One bathroom. Someone should have slapped the architect that ever suggested this… and then slap the builder that followed through anyway.
You only unpacked the bare essentials for the next week or so. The rest could be slowly unpacked as time went on. Charlie helped for a few hours before doing his shuffle he does whenever he’s uncomfortable. All he could say was okay before leaving the room.
Even though you two can talk for hours, he’s still awkward to his core. You supposed that you should be happy as a teenager that he doesn’t hover. He never has. You used to think it was because being a cop made him busy all the time and he just developed the habit. As the years went on, it became more apparent that it was just his personality.
A car honk right outside the window caught your attention. You looked through the glass to see an orange pickup truck and some of the only two faces in town that were familiar to you. Your feet carried you out the door before you were even aware until you crashed right into a boy with hair longer than yours, roughly your height, and only a few months younger in age.
“Woah, Y/N/N, slow down before you hurt yourself. You know you can't be trusted on your own two feet. I'm surprised you're still standing right now or is it just because I'm holding you up.” Jacob said as he gave you a smile.
“Whatever, dick."
"Whoa, Y/F/N. Language when you're standing right in front of me," Dad interjected but he didn't look that offended.
"Sorry... Hi, Billy.”
“Hi, Y/N. Glad you’re back and here to stay. Charlie wouldn’t shut up about it since you told him.”
Your dad rolled his eyes. “Keep talking and I’ll roll that wheelchair right into the middle of the road.”
“Not before I ram you in the ankles.”
You and Jacob’s dads abandoned you to play fight in the road. You couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight.
“I’m glad to see they’re still behaving like that.”
“Oh, yeah. Days go by and nothing’s different. It's getting worse with old age actually, I'm convinced that's why Mom is always on business trips… So, do you like your present?”
You turned to face Jacob. “Hmm?”
He patted the truck just as your dads came back. Your eyes went wide and your lips twitched until they formed a large smile.
“Are you serious? This is perfect! Dad, you didn’t have to get me a car.”
Charlie shrugged. “I work late sometimes and thought that your personal autonomy was very important.”
He’s trying to sound like a parent that actually read the child psychology books. The why he bought me a car didn’t matter. It was the fact that he just did. A truck didn’t exactly fit my aesthetic but something about vintage ones totally did.
"Don't worry, I worked on it myself. Everything's perfect," Jacob said.
"You did this? By yourself now? Jake, what the heck. That's crazy you're doing it on your own now. Why are you so amazing?"
Before anyone could actually answer you, you whipped open the door and sat inside. You remembered this truck very well from playing in it since you and Jake were four. Billy had this thing for at least seventeen years. The first thing you noticed were the new leather seats. They were pink instead of gray. The second thing you noticed was the engine’s sound. Smoother than it had ever sounded before.
Jacob opened the passenger door, hopping in to show you how the car operated. He was a genius at fixing cars and trucks. You wouldn’t be surprised if he owned his own mechanic shop some day.
“And that’s it.” He patted the steering wheel. “If anything breaks, let me know.”
“Thank you! God, I’m so glad I have one recognizable face at school.”
“You’ve only been missed two summers. Did you already forget I don’t go to Forks?”
“Right.”
Jake, like most of the Quileute kids, went to a high school on the reservation in La Push. People weren’t as judgmental when they all shared something common. There they could wear their hair long, tell folklore stories without getting made fun of, or try speaking little words here and there of Quileute so the language doesn’t die with their great grandparents.
All things you would have loved to be part of or just sit on the sidelines and observe. Maybe you should have complained to Charlie until you went there. Now you couldn’t leech off of Jacob and had to actually make friends on your own. Disgusting.
Your sentiments didn’t change as you got in the truck and headed to school. You were assigned a parking space the moment you transferred. Unlucky you, you were stuck in the front parking lot.
So much for leaving to go get a better lunch than whatever grub they were going to serve at the cafeteria. Charlie worked too much to even think about asking him to get you something. And you couldn’t ask him to cook either. He’s not really shit at it. It's just his taste buds suck. So unless you wanted to text him a specific lunch menu each Sunday, it was Russian Roulette of lunch. That was too much work. Charlie thinks salami and grapes belong on the same piece of Nutella and butter toast.
When you finally found the parking space, after three circles around, you turned off the engine and found a bunch of eyes greeting you. Lots of them. That’s what being the new kid in a small town gets a person. The eyes stopped staring once you got out of your truck — they needed a face to match the name Bella Swan.
“Nice ride,” a black boy in a red hoodie said as he nodded at your car.
“Thanks, just got it.”
“Cool.”
You didn’t exchange any other words before you entered the building. You stared at the paper schedule, trying to memorize classrooms and the stupid tiny map in the corner. An arm suddenly tapped your shoulder.
“You’re Y/F/N Swan, right? Our new girl.”
You turned to your right to see an Asian boy with a black polo shirt and the most emo haircut you've seen in a while. You took a double take at his outfit and then at the outfits of your peers around you. Suddenly, you were feeling terribly overdressed.
Your thrifted Burberry monogram poncho doubled as a blanket that you would inevitably need because it sat on top of a long sleeved black mini dress. Was it impractical for January in Washington? Probably. But fashion made everything work. At least you had worn snow boots.
“Yeah. It’s just Y/N by the way.”
“Just Y/N. Got it. Well, hi, I’m Eric and your eyes and ears of this place. Anything happens and I know about it. If you need a tour guide, shoulder to cry on, or lunch date then I’m your man.”
Eric made conversation naturally, no small talk in sight. Kind of like Jacob. You chuckled. “I’ll take a rain check on the lunch date but I do need to find room 33C.”
“Let me lead the way.”
He started to lead you down the hallway and to a set of stairs. “So, why move to Forks?”
“I’m not a baseball girl.”
Eric snapped his fingers. “Perfect tagline for your spread. I’m the editor-in-chief of the paper and you are front page news.”
“Oh… Just the front page right? I mean I don’t mind the paper but more than two pages and I’ll transfer.”
“Got it. Spread killed, feature only. And here’s your stop.”
“Thank you so much.”
“I’ll be back for whatever other classes you need to find.”
True to his word, Eric came back and led you to all my morning classes, including the dreaded P.E. You didn’t hate exercise. You just hated whatever wasn’t pilates or a Jane Fonda workout. Besides, you were never good at P.E. anyway. The testament to that was the gym teacher thinking you should do the volleyball exercises with some of the other girls.
You flinched as the ball came towards you. It didn’t go back over the net. Instead, it hit my calculus desk partner, Mike Newton, in the back of the head.
“Sorry!” you yelled as you sped away to hide in the locker room until lunch period.
Mike seemed to forget about it when lunch came. He talked your ear off all the way into the cafeteria. You had forgotten that a small town wouldn’t be like Phoenix. Everyone wanted to talk to the new kid. Whether they were friends or not was yet to be determined. But Mike was a gentleman. He pulled out your seat for you.
“Thank you.”
“My pleasure, Madame.”
Eric laughed. “Mikey, glad you met my girl Y/N.”
“Oh, your girl?”
“Excuse me, my girl. We even bonded over cars,” The black boy from earlier rubbed your hair in fake affection before pulling the chair out from under Mike.
“You’re so dead, Tyler!” he yelled as they ran after him.
The two girls at your table gave a mix of a laugh and a scoff. A girl with a chunky pink headband slid over a juice carton from her tray.
“Sorry about that. It’s like kindergarten all over again, isn’t it? You’re the shiny new toy. Hi, I’m Jessica by the way.”
“Oh, almost forgot,” the other girl with glasses picks up a camera. “Smile!”
The flash blinded me for a moment. “Woah.”
“Sorry, I need some candids for the spread.”
“The spread is dead, Angela,” Eric said in an oddly defensive tone. “Don’t bring it up again… I got your back, babe.”
You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped from your throat. Eric left, leaving you, Jessica, and Angela at the table. Angela set her camera down.
“Great, now what am I supposed to do about filling up the rest of the newspaper? I can’t do another editorial on teen drinking. It’d be the third time.”
“You could always run a psa on eating disorders,” you tried to offer an option. “Or um… padding on the swim team?”
The other girls looked at you and for a moment you thought you said something completely wrong but they began laughing. You caught bits of the conversation as you focused on my food: some of the guys bragging about their sizes that seemed totally fake, speedos fitting improperly, and wondering if they only pad for school pictures.
Going back to the conversation, a glimpse at the window caught your eye before you could speak. Five people walked like this school was a runway.
“Who are they?” you asked.
Jessica dropped her fork on her tray, ready to tell you everything. “The Cullens. Dr. and Mrs. Cullen’s foster kids.”
The names were ones you couldn't remember hearing while visiting over the summers. They were either new kids or never came around La Push. One thing you couldn’t deny was that they were all attractive. And the shorter girl had wicked fashion sense. She strutted by like the rest of them in her thin and flowy white maxi skirt with a chunky black sweater and heels entirely too high for you to ever try wearing. You felt almost entranced just looking at them.
“They’re all like together,” Jessica continued. “Rosalie, the blonde one, yeah she’s with the big one, Emmett. Like a thing.”
“Jess, they’re not actually related,” Angela quickly interjected.
“Yeah I know, but it’s still kinda weird that they live together, don’t you think? Anyway, the small dark-haired girl Alice is with Jasper. He’s the one that always looks like he’s in pain. The two blondes are actually siblings, Mrs. Cullen’s niece and nephew or something like that.”
“Dr. Cullen’s like this foster dad matchmaker.”
“Maybe, he’ll adopt me,” Angela said.
You chuckled. If Dr. Cullen was such a matchmaker then you’d have to tell Charlie goodbye.
“What about him?” you motioned to the last guy left. He walked ahead of his foster siblings like he was the leader or something.
“Edward? Totally hot, supposedly single. No one here seems good enough for him. Don’t waste your time. Like I care, just don’t waste your time.”
“Trust me, wasn’t planning on it.”
You knew that Jessica could have a skewed perspective. Maybe something happened between the two of them but Angela seemed to agree with her. This Edward probably was nothing but bad news and trouble.
You dared myself to look at their table again. Your eyes squinted when you saw their trays. Nothing looked touched. When you looked up, all five of them were staring at you. You whipped your head around and didn’t dare look back again until after lunch.
Thankfully, the classes you had right after lunch didn’t have any of them… until bio class. The teacher, Mr. Donoghue motioned for you to sit at the only empty seat that happened to be next to Edward. You nodded and began moving to the chair. A chill ran down you spine and you shivered as the chill pierced your back. Edward stiffened up at the same time.
You scowled as he held his hand over his mouth and nose. You had taken a shower, put on nice perfume, lotioned, and wore nice jewelry. There was absolutely no way you smelled. His hand stayed over the lower part of his face the entire class period. Even when he had to hand over material, he pushed them to you with a pencil. The moment the bell rang, Edward was gone. Good riddance.
Mr. Donoghue signed the last spot in my slip saying you made it to class successfully and now you could give it to the receptionist. You paused in the doorway after seeing someone’s back but it was too late. The receptionist had seen you.
“Just a moment, dear.”
The person with the back turned around to reveal a troubled face. He grabbed his coat. “Never mind, I’ll just have to endure it.”
You rolled your eyes, handed in you slip and went to your truck. Edward was a total douche. Yet you couldn’t shake the feeling that we’d be seeing each other more often than you’d like. Probably more often than he’d like as well.
Charlie wasn’t finished working when school was over but had enough time for a dinner break. His friend, Waylan, brought takeout from Subway. You didn’t remember Waylan very well. He left for most of the summer each year to visit his kids and grandkids that left Washington. You all moved stuff around on Charlie’s desk to clear space so you could eat. You had a Spicy Italian sub while the two of them ate BLTs. The two of them shared a different sentiment about the Cullens when you asked them.
Unlike the kids at school, they had nothing but praise. The Cullens weren’t weird but mature and well-rounded teenagers. And Dr. Cullen was the best surgeon they’ve had… and he stayed past one year which is an accomplishment. Certain jobs like doctors and lawyers always come from out of town. Most leave after one or two years, not able to handle the slow pace of this green and gray town.
Soon, Charlie and Waylan talked in the most stereotypical old man fashion that you had actually checked out of the conversation. Your cellphone rang as you grabbed a potato chip from the small bag that came with your sandwich.
“That’s Mom, I’m gonna take this.”
“Tell your mom I said hi, Y/N/N.”
You nodded as you walked away.
~~
The next day at school, Edward wasnt there. You had planned to confront him and find out what his problem was when he didn’t even know you. You weren't exactly popular back in Phoenix but no one had any issues with you. Never.
However, his siblings were there. Not that you were going to approach them. Your problem was their brother not them and you weren't trying to make enemies in such a small town. You watched them walk into the building as you leaned against your truck. You turned when something hit your back.
“Y/N!”
You laughed as you looked at the Twizzler on the ground. “Seriously, Tyler? How dare you waste good food,” you said as you grabbed your bag and walked over to where the kids you met yesterday were all crowded around what you assumed was Tyler’s van.
He shrugged. “I would hardly call Twizzlers the peak of fine dining.”
We all walked inside at the start of a bell ringing. The day had been pleasant without your science partner. And the next day was the same when he didn’t show up again. And the next day until the entire week had gone by without Edward showing his face.
Your first week of school was lucky. You had missed any torrential rain. But you couldn’t say the same for that Monday. The only thing worse than rain was rain when it was below freezing outside. Your front steps were covered in ice. Your phone rang as you closed the house door.
"Hey, Jake... First week done, somewhat a success. Hey, when is Spring Break for you guys? We should totally start coordinating now if we want to try and leave town."
Despite being careful as you talked, you must have stepped incorrectly because before you knew it, your butt had gone down the last three concrete steps leading away from your door and to your driveway.
“Woah, woah, Y/N/N. Are you okay?” Charlie asked as he helped you up.
“Yeah, just fine, Dad. Ice isn’t exactly helpful to the severely uncoordinated.”
“That’s why I got new tires for you. The old ones were getting pretty bald.”
“Thank you.”
You both high-fived before getting into your respective cars and leaving. It felt like you were already used to the routine of Forks when you pulled into your parking spot and found yourself automatically going to Tyler’s van. You sat with Jessica, Angela, Eric, or Mike whenever you had class and swapped snacks with Tyler in between every morning class because your lockers were right next to each other. And the group always walked to lunch together.
“Salad or Sandwich… Hello? Earth to Y/N?”
You blinked to see Jess snapping her fingers in front of you. “Sorry.”
“We wanted to know what you wanted? The lines are backing up so we’re splitting up and tackling stations.”
“Nice, divide and conquer the cafeteria.”
“The Vikings got nothing on us.”
“As long as the only thing we’re conquering and pillaging are those sandwiches.”
“Absolutely. They might have had great hair but I'm not interested. So, ham and cheese, turkey, or those stupid cucumber ones that no one likes?”
“Hey, I like them!”
Jess laughed and walked to her designated line. Mike and you were in charge of gathering everyone’s desserts and soups. Three wanted brownies and three wanted chocolate chip cookies, four wanted tomato soup and two wanted chicken noodle. You all wanted saltine crackers. Every now and then, you looked over your shoulder at what made you stop in you tracks. Edward was back.
And your biology class was the first class after lunch.
