The only way I can even accept the betrayal of the Potters being universally regarded as so horrible in the Wizarding World is because it almost let Voldemort win. I’m guessing that somehow people knew the attack on the Potters was instrumental in the war, in terms of Voldemort’s plans, because otherwise it makes no real sense about why this particular attack is seen as so awful (everyone knows the story and regards it as one of the worst events of the First War, but like, entire families got wiped out in the war but we only really hear of it by Moody showing Harry the Order photo and telling him their tragic fates and possibly Molly talking about her brothers. Neville’s parents were tortured to death, we’re told this caused an uproar, yet we hear jack about it for years?). I can buy the public thinking Sirius was a spy after the Potters attack (people who knew Sirius should have asked questions though, since they knew how much Sirius loved James and guess what else? There’s nobody who could 100% say Sirius was the Secret Keeper; while everyone believed he was, there was no actual confirmation anyone could provide since he very much was not the SK), but the whole “right hand” thing makes no sense. Where’d they get “he was second in command” from “he betrayed two people and worked for Voldemort, killing 12 muggles and an old friend with one spell”? Who even makes a spy second in command? Why did nobody interrogate Voldemort’s supposed right hand for information on the Death Eaters, since it took a while to find the remaining members and they still missed some, and Voldemort’s alleged second would surely have that information?
tbh even that assumption is just—so far fetched? because i’m sure secrecy was at an all time high, everyone was paranoid and afraid, i’m sure no one knew anything. like, i feel like the potter’s attack was given the significance that it was purely because of its ultimate consequences ykno? like if harry wasn’t the boy who lived, no one would care so much. there’s also this element of extremely poor plot planning too imo, similar to the whole mother’s love protection thing because,,,there must’ve been countless mothers/parents who sacrificed themselves and yet it was just the potters that reaped some mystical benefits of it? bull. same with the betrayal of the potters being considered as terrible as it was in the middle of war. jkr just,,,wanted some shit done and didn’t care how much she had to manoeuver other things around to shove it in and so u have stuff like this.
and god, it’s just a constant problem for me that sirius was never interrogated? honestly, i know it was needed for plot purposes, but sirius is really one of the biggest reasons why i think dumbledore is much darker/manipulative than most people think of him. while i wouldn’t say he got sirius thrown in azkaban, i will say he probably turned a blind eye on purpose bc it just served his needs so well. otherwise, if that’s not the case and he really just neglected to perform his duties as a war leader by not interrogating a suspected spy—then he just comes off even worse ykno?

In Mako's defense, I don't think we should blame the whole love triangle fiasco solely on him

A lot of things came into play for that triangle to happen but it just so happens that Mako's need to NOT disappoint anyone (but ending up disappointing everyone) is a huge factor.
Let me just point out that whenever Mako initiated a kiss to either Korra or Asami, it was never while he's "officially" dating the other. If anything, it was often the girls who would kiss him first while knowing he's dating the other, which they both know that it is their fault too.
In Book 1, he just simply confessed his feelings for Korra while also pointing out the fact that he couldn't act on those feelings because he's dating Asami (whom he also has feeling for but possibly not to the same degree as with Korra). But Korra kisses him anyway.
In Book 2, Asami kissed him first at her warehouse when the guy is simply cheering her up and saying he believes in her even when she doesn't believe in herself. At the time, he just broke up with Korra. Sure, it was pretty recent and he's trying to not dwell too much into that by busying himself with police work but can you blame the guy for giving up trying to put up with Korra's spitfire?
Then of course, we know what came after when Korra and Mako saw each other again and Korra's memory was wiped.
Now, notice how Asami pretty much didn't try to make a move on him again after that? Even after he and Korra broke up the second time (for good)?
I think Asami pretty much realized that Mako's too not into disappointing anyone and too emotionally awkward to pursue a relationship with again. Because not only would it be awkward but going from one girl to a other twice could ruin their dynamic as a team as well as her friendship with Korra, both of which she cherish.
So, yeah, both girls ended their romantic relationships with him. (Or in Asami's case, the possibility of it.)
And this sets up to what I like most about their relationship with each other after, especially in Book 3.
Now in Book 3 starts between three of them with Korra and Asami witnessing how Mako treats their interactions like a land mine, like any moment some hard feelings might come up, and how much he wants to avoid that from happening.
Hence why he declined Korra's offer to have him live in Air Temple Island and both ladies' help with the investigation.
What Mako doesn't realize is that there's zero to no hard feelings between the two because they pretty much had an idea that both of them made a move on him while he was dating either one of them.
Asami for sure knows that Korra kissed Mako in Book 1 and Korra probably had an idea that something happened between Asami and Mako while she was away and felt embarrassed that she kissed Mako right in front of her and everyone who knew about their break up. Probably why she laughed when Asami admitted that she DID kiss him.
Because both women knew they had feelings for Mako and that the dude also reciprocates those feelings and thought "Yeah, that was awkward but maybe we can bond over that fact instead of being at each other's throats because we're also at fault and if there's a female version of bros before hoes, Mako is that emotionally awkward hoe and we won't let his people-pleasing ways get between our vibe."

So they both poke fun at Mako's awkwardness to loosen him up. None of that "you hurt her and you hurt me, and now you're gonna pay for it" revenge plot. I guess Mako picked up on that during their airbending performance because he wasn't uncomfortable around those two since. And I guess Mako finding out that they got away safely from the Earth Queen's airship and out of the dessert reassured him their team dynamic is still intact.
The Korra-Mako-Asami love triangle is not exactly what I would call toxic.
Fucked up? Yes. Messy? Yes. Toxic? No.
Maybe it would be toxic if, say, Mako actively pursued both women while he was in a relationship with either of them without any inhibitions or conscience to stop him from acting out his feelings for both. Like, literally cheating on them.
Instead the canon love triangle is just a clusterfrick of three developing young adults emotionally stunted by dead parent/s, becoming a parent, parental issues, and basically being sheltered for more than a decade in the middle on an icy nowhere with limited contact to the outside world.

Ngl I chuckled at "Mako is that emotionally awkward hoe" lmao.
After reading some of the comments... people still don't get it. The point isn't that Mako is innocent, he is far from it. But so many people just pretend like the girls didn't have an active part in the drama, especially Korra. ALL three are to blame, even if we say not equally, then Asami is still the one carrying the least of it.
If the writers had given more spotlight to Mako or at least equally as much as they did to Bolin, it would've been more apparent but I think Mako's core flaw was that he was often very indecisive in anything that wasn't bending related (he was acknowledged as talented af by Amon), or keeping his brother's ass alive. We see him mostly going with the flow, which is a problem.
But in the end he without a hesitation decides that he is willing to sacrifice himself to bring Kuvira down by overloading the spirit bomb.
As for his stick in the butt. It's for a reason. He watched his parents get killed by a firebender (missed opportunity to make him conflicted about his talents as a firebender imo). He and his brother were oprhaned and became homeless and he sacrificed a lot to keep Bolin alive. They joined a gang and I would assume that he carried most weight there, since he wanted Bolin to retain more of his innocence than he did. Their life, for Mako, didn't start turning upwards until they got to leave the triads and move into the probending scene. He shielded Bolin from a LOT in those years more than likely, just to allow him to remain his cheerful self.
So basically, Mako sacrificed his own innocence so Bolin could have his. Him being less animated, more no nonsense and more serious, makes sense because he HAD TO BE to keep themselves alive.

to be frank the b2 breakup was due to their mutual flaws not incompatibility neither of them were ready for a relationship with anyone. it was asami and korra who were incompatible with each other while makorra overcame those mutual flaws
I never really thought of korra and asami as becoming friends until b3 ( before you go but asami said she liked korra you dont need to be friends with someone to like themq

- No because Connor has dad vibes or at the very least, protective older brother vibes and that is EXACTLY how he'll be with you.
- Maybe you joined the Brotherhood and he took you under his wing or maybe he was assigned to be your teacher but either way, he will always be nearby and watching you just to make sure you are safe.
- He will also help educate you in your medical education as best as he can, introducing you and getting you familiar with helpful plants that have medical uses and such.
- He also insists on being the one to teach you how to fight properly because even though he knows your main focus is healing and helping injured assassin's recover, he'd never forgive himself if he allowed something to happen to you. Don't worry, he's a gentle teacher who eases you in and has a lot of good advice.
- He has killed people for you. Templars who tried sneak you or drunken men who tried to hit on you. When you panic and ask him why he did that, he says that he had no other choice. You think that maybe he could've just knocked them out, tied them up somewhere and left them, but...it IS Connor. He usually chooses the most peaceful and diplomatic options.
- Maybe...maybe you're overthinking it. After all, Connor would never lie to you...right?
Platonic Yandere! Jacob:
- You definetly meet Jacob when he's brought in by the Brotherhood with some new injury he got that was probably from doing a stupid stunt. Either way, it's not too bad and it was good practice.
- He's a fun and lovable guy, honestly. He's cracking jokes and making you laugh and asking about how long you've been with the Brotherhood. You feel relaxed with him, he's so much more casual than other assassins and you're more drawn to him.
- He lets you hang around him and the Rooks, all of them love you like a little sister and are always happy when you come around. Sometimes Jacob calls you in if one of them needs to be patched up and he jokingly says that maybe instead of the Brotherhood, you should just work as a healer for him and his gang.
- You laugh it off and so does he but he's actually deadly serious about it. Jacob isn't gonna act like the Brotherhood is all peachy and perfect because they're assassins and some of those heartless bastards wouldn't feel any guilt leaving you behind on a mission or something, but...if you worked for him, you'd be much more safer. Everyone loves you, everyone adores you, and everyone (especially Jacob) would ensure your safety before their own.
- Most definetly has started fights over you, like some drunk tells you that you'd be a better whore than a medic and Jacob loses his mind, both Evie and Henry and even some other rooks have to pull him back as he beats the man shitless for saying those things about you.
- He kinda treats you like a kid, which is ironic because he hates being treated that way himself by older Assassins and Evie, but he can't help it. You're still so innocent to this world, too innocent to even be an Assassin, so just leave it to Jacob and keep everyone happy with that adorable smile of yours, yeah?
Platonic Yandere! Ezio:
- NO BECAUSE HE'D THE W O R S T OUT OF THESE TWO AND MORE NOTICEABLE AS A PLATONIC YANDERE. ESPECIALLY IF YOU REMIND HIM OF HIS BROTHERS IN ANYWAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.
- You'd be way too star struck to notice it, though. After all, you're meeting THE Ezio Auditore! AND HE SEEMS TO NOT BE ANNOYED BY YOUR INEXPERIENCE LIKE THE OTHER ASSASSINS.

- You start to notice his yandere tendencies when an Assassin snaps at you because you might've done something wrong and Ezio just threatens them with death straight up. He charms his way out of it but the even still kinda lives in the back of your mind.
- NO BECAUSE BOTH TEMPLARS AND ASSASSIN'S FEAR YOU. Because if a Templar captain sees his troupes bring in an Assassin Prisoner and it's YOU, the captain will start crying as he asks his men if they know what they've done. Other Assassin's have seen the injuries Ezio has given to those who ALLOW you to get hurt and for that reason, you are to stay close to them at all times for fear they might meet the same fate.
- Depending on which Ezio we're talking about, he'll literally make it so that you're always under his protection and that he can always have his eye on you.
- Bonus thing: he does not trust boys, given his background and how he played with women, he'd much rather choose one of his own assassins that are your age than risk having you get your heart broken, he's a good dad that way.

laxus x bickslow hcs pleasee?
Yes, can do! Sorry it took so long to get to this one!
Laxus very much enjoys how off-the-wall and weird Bickslow is. It adds flavor to their little circle, and it offsets Freed's and Evergreen's overly-refined vibes. He likes Bickslow, weirdness and immaturity and all.
Likewise, Bickslow adores Laxus and genuinely thinks he's the coolest thing ever--while also respecting him almost the way one would a big brother. He's always felt more accepted around Laxus and by extension in Fairy Tail than anywhere else.
Having said that, Bickslow would throw it back on Laxus without hesitation if he ever gave the order. Like, it's the epitome of "we're just friends but I'd f/ck you if you asked". It is absolutely not a secret, because should anyone ask, he's completely open about how he'd plug that in, so to speak. He doesn't care because Laxus is popular and it's not exactly an uncommon reaction to him.
Bickslow has a surprisingly diverse music taste. Rap, RnB, electro, house, pop. Laxus very much enjoys sharing his music with Bickslow and seeing what makes him tick.
Dating Bickslow is the equivalent of eating a scorpion pop in front of someone, for Laxus. Bickslow is off-putting and creepy and he's that way on purpose, so many people treat him as unsettling and undesirable. They'll just be thinking "wow, he's so creepy, I can't believe that Laxus guy hangs out with him..." when Laxus walks up, says "hey babe" and kisses him on the mouth.
"Babe" and "bro" are interchangeable, but only at first when the relationship is new. Bickslow loves being called "babe", it powers him up, and if "bro" ever gets used to address him, Laxus is usually annoyed about something he did.
Bickslow is over 6 feet tall and should not be climbing on anyone, but Laxus is also over 6 feet tall and has an extremely climb-able body. Bix loves draping himself over Laxus' broad-ass shoulders and, if he's ever tired or wants to be carried, can sometimes convince Laxus to piggyback him. It's fucking immature as hell but he likes it a lot.
Bickslow also loves to dance. This one, Laxus isn't so keen on, but he can learn a few step rhythms or waltz if his man really wants him to.
Laxus one day starts referring to the dolls Bickslow keeps around (Pappa, Pippi, Puppu, Peppe and Poppo) as "our kids". It's mostly to fuck with Bickslow, who loves to tease and prod Laxus every day but gets absolutely floored when Laxus says stuff like this in public.
Bickslow can be playfully possessive, but he does have his insecurities and does need occasional reassurances that Laxus won't leave him for someone more conventionally attractive. Laxus rises to the occasion every time.

I watched Wolf(2021) and it was FUCKING BORING! Like holy shit it took me three different sittings to get through and the last I though I had more than 2 minutes left but the remainder of the timer on the progress bar is all credits. The main character, Jacob, is a wolf who constantly has no shirt on like did they write this during the Twilight craze and it only got green-lit years later?
Spoilers below, this movie has an R rating so read at your own risk it has lots of triggering stuff in it like abuse, there's nudity, ect...
It just… ends. There's like no real conclusion either satisfying, bittersweet, or downer ending. :[ Jacob just… escapes with the help of the cat girl. And the evil institution where all the animal kids are being held is just left there? Like the production ran out of money and they had to literally stop filming right at the big escape scene. The abusive guy who runs the place never even gets into a fight with our main wolf character even though he's supposed to be "vicious" at this point in the film. Jacob pounced on and growled at a staff member once. Which ALSO is a stupid as fuck scene. Jacob didn't even bite him, slap him, claw at him, or anything. Just growled. And he did this because the youngest of the animal kids, a little duck boy who was like?? maybe 10, was being pushed around by said staff member. Either decide if our "hero" is going to "attack" staff and defend a kid or if he want's to eat the other animal people. Because both happened in that scene. Jacob attacks the staff member and THEN stares at the duck kid like he's lunch? Pick a tone.
On the subject of tone this whole film reeks "I wanted to write a kinky film but I only heard of petplay once online and never researched it." vibes. But they couldn't get their sexy film funded so they had to write a half-assed story so a studio would pick it up. -_-
But lets talk about the side characters. The other animal kids are kinda great. Rufus was pretty good. Macaw girl whose name I don't remember? Her only shtick is mimicking what the staff members say to her but it's so bitchy and I like it. The "zookeeper" villain's actor does make you hate him with his performance so yay? Also, whoever is doing the whinnying for horse girl is pretty great at it. xD If it's the actress I hope they hired her because she can whinny as well as act. If Jacob was just supposed to be a reactive blank slate and we're supposed to learn about the others through him that would have been better but we don't spend a lot of time getting to know them.
The sad thing is there are elements in this movie that seem okay and may have been great if someone took the time to expand on it. They were going somewhere with the secondary character, the cat girI's back story and then the film ends. We learn zip about her. It started off okay and then just had this downward spiral into MEH. I really didn't care about what happened to Jacob because he wasn't a character, he was barely a trope. DX And just exactly how old is the character supposed to be? They sorta treat him like he's a teen but his actor is really not convincing even as a someone in their early20's. *checks actor's age* and it's because he's thirty. My friend made a joke about the 30-year-old actors playing kids when I showed her the trailer but I didn't expect her to be right.
There's also this scene early on in the film where Jacob sneaks out of his room at night and starts wandering around the place. He winds up in the kitchen with Cat Girl. At some point they have to hide because of the noise they are making and they choose to hunker down behind this stainless steel counter with part of the kitchen visible. Someone photoshop a Jurassic Park raptor in a screenshot because that's all I could think of.
Overall if you've got time to kill I guess this movie would be fun to watch as something to make fun of in a group but watching it by myself was not something I want to do again.

i dont get on much anymore just cause I don't have anything to really say. :p
I'm just vibing and dealing with personal stuff.
But I think I finally have something to say so let's go, another NPD rant. About ableism towards NPD/ASPD. HUGE trigger warning for ableism/ableists and ableist language. We love you narcissists, we love you antisocial peeps. 💜💜💜
The abuse that's commonly done by NPD and ASPD folks. It has nothing to do with the disorders. It's not more common cause it's those disorders, it's cause people slap narcissist and psychopath on any undesirable toxic traits. Completely ignoring what NPD and ASPD are. Seeing NPD as some evil manipulative ego centric disorder. Seeing ASPD as the uncaring manipulative asshole disorder.
That literal stigma prevented me from knowing I had NPD and DEFINITELY kept me from knowing I had ASPD because I didn't fit the abusive stereotypes of them.
If you can read my posts and still think I'M the one misunderstanding shit like narc abuse, you don't actually care about victims or any of the nuance with a situation.
I have encountered more toxic people under the label of depression than I have with people with personality disorders. I have been called heartless, hollow, empty, told I am a leech for everyone around me. I see my disorders constantly lumped in with the worst of humanity, people I actively stand against.
Anyone regardless of disorder can be toxic or abusive. Any personality disorder can be toxic or not. But there are so many stereotypes that most people don't even know what it's actually like to have PDs. When you look up NPD, it's all about how to deal with a narcissist, how to hurt a narcissist, how to leave a narcissist. Imagine being in a low episode, searching for help, and you get bombarded with that shit. Imagine looking up ASPD and just seeing stuff about psychopaths and sociopaths.
You can try to act like you're explaining it to me, but I have witnessed actual ableism from this. Being an abuse victim does NOT give you the right to stigmatize a disorder. Even if not your intention, you are doing just that. I literally had my defense of narcissism be compared to a fucking r*pist as if I was defending a r*pist. They literally compared narcissists to r*pists and as a csa survivor, that ain't fucking fun.
So go ahead, say that it's important to understand the abuse given out by people with NPD and ASPD. I have abusers that have those disorders and I have those disorders. I have been treated like the enemy for having a disorder I can't help within the mental health spaces. The fact I have to accept ill get some people in my inbox saying shit to me if I post about NPD/ASPD says it. And BPD folks that try to say they're the good ones (this is mostly a TikTok thing), siding with that ableist rhetoric isn't gonna save you. Because people conflate BPD and NPD a lot and when one of us PDs are demonized, it will quickly devolve into other ableism and demonization.
Ableism will start with the "scary, abusive disorders" and will quickly become about most every disorder. Pushing the "bad" disorders under the bus won't stop anything. Catering to ableists by shoving NPD and ASPD under the bus won't do shit. Maybe the disorder did personalize the abuse, my abusive ex used his ADHD and GAD and depression against me. It literally made me loathe being diagnosed with GAD and ADHD being a correlated those disorders with HIM. But I never once thought to blame other people with those disorders because of one bad person. You can talk about your abuse without lumping in how they're a narcissist. There are other words: selfish, egocentric, self centered, egotistical. That gets the point across that they're full of themselves and selfish without correlating it with NPD.
And for those that will say that "narcissist is separate from NPD" that is not what happens. I can separate them as well, but the majority of people cannot and that only adds to the stigma. When you look up narcissist, you find NPD. When people with NPD try to look up their disorder, they find articles about evil narcissists.
NPD and ASPD are not more likely to be abusive. They'll be toxic, any trauma response can lead to toxic relationships. I've been toxic too! Cause I never had a chance to learn to regulate my emotions, I was neglected and ignored and left to care for myself so much, I had to learn to manipulate and fake to be able to be accepted.
Not to mention relationships are so incredibly nuanced and abuse is never the same. Also as someone that fell down that narc abuse hole years ago cause of how common it was to see, it only keeps you trapped in anger and pain, furious that people will try to sympathize with narcissists, angry and hurt and trying to pathologize the pain you endured. There are more nuanced ways to discuss an abuser having NPD and ASPD. You lump the disorder in with abuse and put them as the two most evil disorders. I can just say I have NPD and I'll be told "of course you'd defend abusers, you're a narcissist." Not all abusers have NPD/ASPD. A majority don't. Yes NPD/ASPD impacted the abuse I faced, but I wasn't abused because of their disorders, I was abused because they were abusive.
If you fail to understand that, that is not my problem. There are people who word it better than me, I do my best to communicate despite my difficulties. If you can't see the harm that this does when people with personality disorders already struggle to get help because of stigma, that is not my problem. I have explained, I have done my best to communicate, I have made it clear why it's harmful. If you still fail to understand that, then just don't bother.
If you leave some anti-narcissist stuff in my box, I'm gonna just ignore it or delete it. I'm not giving you the time of day.
I mention NPD/Narcissism and ASPD and I instantly have to be prepared for people to be upset. Looking up narcissist/narcissism anywhere and being bombarded with how evil, soulless, and empty we are. I have been told I'm lying about my abuse cause of my BPD, now imagine if I was more open in other spaces about my NPD/ASPD.
Any personality disorder can lead to toxic and unhealthy situations because these are severely traumatized people with no idea how to fully cope. It has taken me years and accepting I had NPD/ASPD to get to a point where I have healthy communication. I refused to believe I was a narcissist cause they're evil and abusive. It only made my toxic narcissistic traits worse. I wanted to be a "good person" and so I refused to accept I had NPD/ASPD. After destigmatizing the disorders, avoiding narc abuse shit, all of that and learning about the disorders from people with em, I went: Oh shit, I think I have these. Is that possible? And lo and behold, I do. And suddenly I'm not forcing myself to fake, I'm not hiding some of my "shittier" aspects. My friend MA helps me by letting me unmask 100%. These traits I'd be so demonized for the second I showed them to others are accepted by MA and suddenly I find ways to communicate better and learn to be healthier. Cause instead of being treated like a monster for a disorder I never asked for, I'm treated with understanding. So when I do mess up, I don't feel defensive or upset and I will apologize.
Demonizing disorders, lumping NPD/ASPD in with abuse just leads to more stigma. It'll start with these two, but it'll come right back to BPD just like it still is for many people. I will be told narcissists can't love, narcissists can't feel for others, narcissists don't deserve to live. I'm told sociopaths are monsters, psychopaths are pure evil, getting lumped in with murderers and r*pists. I've met shitty people with NPD/ASPD. I've met good people with NPD/ASPD. And creating a single stereotype of the disorders around the evil/toxic/bad parts completely ignores many narcissists and antisocial folks that don't fall into that stereotype. Cause I've met narcissists that fit the criteria, but don't fit the stereotype created around the criteria.
You are ableist. You have a chance to learn and I hope you grow out of this. But if not then I have no sympathy for you. Cause in the end, you're just fighting alongside ableists and people that don't want us to even be alive or get help. If your first instinct is to hurt a narcissistic abuser, how are you any better than them? And I'm all for victims of oppression and abuse reacting how they can. But maybe realize that your initial trauma response to such things is not always right. Just because you don't attack random narcissists and antisocial folks on the internet doesn't mean there aren't people doing that. And you believing in narc abuse allows that opening, just like in many other situations. You allow that shittiness to happen.
I sincerely hope you can learn and grow from this. Cause I've been there too, with other situations too when I was younger. It's easy to fall down that hole. And I hope tou can look back on this in the future and have matured and be better. But if not then oh well, stay away from me. I'm willing to educate, but if you aren't willing to listen then just stay away from me. Nothing I say will ever make you listen.
The tone for this may come off as rude or uncaring, but this comes from a very personal and passionate place. And having come so far in my journey, I will say this shit. Just as I have gotten anti-narcissist ableism in my inboxes, I have gotten thanks and people saying that my posts have helped them feel less alone. And ultimately that and educating others is my main goal.
Narcissists, antisocial peeps, any heavily demonized "abuser" disorder, you are so worth it. You are not these stereotypes that people make you out to be. Even if you're toxic, remember you never have had a chance to not be in survival mode. It doesn't excuse harm done, but if you get stuck in that area of self hatred, it makes it harder to grow. Sometimes you are shit and it isn't good, but you're learning to be better. You don't have to get help the expected way especially with such a broken mental health system. You deserve to be treated as human and as a fellow trauma victim. You don't have to feel love in a normal way, you don't have to be the norm or expected way of anything. You can be better. What matters is being at a point where you don't have to rely on that survival mode and trauma responses. You're safe here. Whether you feel love, whether you have been abusive/toxic in the past have gotten better, whether you're struggling to be better but you're still trying, whether you struggle with being a "good person." You're welcome here. It doesn't fucking matter. You know your life, not me, not these strangers. You don't need to be a "good person" to be worthy of love and understanding and be able to just live your fucking life. Whether you aren't working to getting better. I don't know you, I don't know your story, I don't know your life, it ain't my place or anyone else's place to judge and you are welcome here. You don't need to explain every tiny aspect of yourself and your disorder to be worthy of being treated with respect and kindness and decency. You are welcome here :)
All I focus on is what you stand for, whether you're anything like ableist or homophobic or racist or transphobic etc. or anything else like p*dos or r*pists.
We humanize people here and you're welcome here. Especially if you've been so demonized by people. The stereotype of a good person is complete bullshit. You deserve understanding and love.
Of course this is a very general/blanket statement and cannot list every single tiny thing that is or isn't acceptable. Also I hope this conveys things well as I am having a harder time communicating my thoughts lately especially since what I say can so easily be misinterpreted.
This is one big rant about ableism. Fuck ableism, it won't be tolerated on this page at all. Anything else problematic as well. It doesn't matter whether your abuser has or doesn't have NPD/ASPD. It doesn't fucking matter. And focusing so much on the narcissist abuser or "psychopath" abuser is stigmatizing, harmful, and doesn't do shit to actually help you heal.
Anyway, love you fellow narcissists and antisocial folks. This was focused on NPD/ASPD, but any personality disorder, you're loved here and welcomed here. Especially since PDs are either ignored/forgotten or completely demonized.

I hate to "kids these days" about it, but conflict and rejection and resolution and acceptance are not something that many people are equipped to handle right now. Or did defensiveness dig her heels in? Well either way she and her man aren't going to a lesbian bar ever again.

monthly(ish) 🎀 update!
heyyy! it’s me. i haven’t done one of these in sooo long 😭 i figure i should start with what everyone is waiting on, arsal. truth be told i did not listen to anyone’s advice and im still hopelessly in love with him and it doesn’t help much that we’re both playing this back and forth hard to get game. truly it’s so like. draining to have him constantly on my mind. i think the problem is because when we were kids i liked him a little bit and now that all this dawned down on me it just became even worse because he truly is one of the first guys i’ve really really liked.
i’ve always had a bad track record with situationships and hookups and i never really really liked any guy i’ve ever talked to or been with but with arsal it’s so different. like even when i don’t talk to him something about him just makes me gravitate towards him. sigh it’s so hard being a girl 💔
speaking of guys randomly cameron called me one night after like 3 months of no contact and said he wanted me again and i told him i didn’t miss him and he called me a slut and said that’s why im incapable of love which is crazy because he is the first guy i admitted that fear to so good to know! he was drunk but it still made me feel a certain way.
back to less important things, currently im laying in bed in my hometown and it feels so surreal because it’s my last winter here and it’s just, hitting me. like ill actually have to leave this place i call home and it just sucks.
ENOUGH SAPPY THINGS! let’s go into more drama. basically i have a trio ish kinda thing with my main circle of friends, one is my best friend for ever i love that girl and the other is one of my guy friends and we absolutely hate him. he is such a man and it’s so disgusting how he talks about his ex. and he likes to act like he has a crush on both me and my friend it’s so weird.
kpop.. oh kpop. i’ve completely fell out of kpop once like school started again. i haven’t listen to any music or read a single fic since i fell out. i think it might be for good this time. but that does NOT mean ill ever stop sending in my updates, we are pen pals forever until somehow someone deletes my tumblr account and your account disappears.
god what else can i talk about. i turned 20 this year. so surreal truly. i blew out my candles and i think i stared at the cake in silence. i don’t even know whats happening to me at this point. i genuinely feel like im going through a (not mid) mid life crisis.

about lenore from castlevania
tw : rape, abuse, toxic relationships, suicide
don’t get me wrong. lenore is a great character. i almost wrote was, but in the end, yes, she still is.
but the way her relationship with hector evolved in season four is truly so f*cking messy. and this is, imo, the biggest problem with lenore.
i loved that she was this cute, seemingly soft vampire (even though it was too good to be true, yeah, i’m looking at you hector) but well, she is a vampire, part of an evil sisterhood with a super-evil vampire as its head. she had a mission, she did it in the most cruel way, that’s true, but she succeeded. i personnally despised people who use their power as she did with hector, who was abused, denied food and clothes, tortured (probably) and literally treated like a dog. it might be ~ sexy ~ in some situations (the bdsm vibes, not the abuse ofc) , it’s not supposed to be when you’re a prisoner.
that’s the key word here : hector was a prisoner. and lenore was his torturer. let’s not forget about this. PLEASE, LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT THIS.
what happened at the end of season three is definitely super upsetting. it’s obviously very morally wrong as lenore tricked him, forced him to have s*x with her. yes, she forced him. i won’t listen any justification of what she did. it was morally SUPER wrong. it was r*pe. i only see two options here, from hector’s perspective : one) he wanted her because he developed feelings/some sort of comfort for/from lenore, or two) he didn’t and thought that having s*x with her would probably help him with his situation.
well, it’s still bad. it’s still r*pe. and don’t tell me lenore got to like him while playing with his feelings. do you remember how she treated him after she bound him with the ring? she was harsh, cold, laughing at him for thinking it was more than her manipulation.
as i said, i have no respect for this, definitely not. but we’re watching castlevania. a show about evil vampires and horrific creatures. even some of the human characters are big pieces of shit. so i can understand what the show did. lenore is as evil as her sisters and she clearly did a great job here. i was surprised, hector was surprised, carmilla was suprised. great job girl. (and this is where i truly started to despise lenore, because i really liked hector as a character.) (and i’m not even gonna talk about lenore saying she plans to have more s*x with her pet. i think you get my point now.)
but then season four. wtf was season four??
in two months. two. months. we go from hector being horrified by what happened, lenore being so cruel to... the both of them being fine with each other? i was suprised but we quickly saw that hector had a plan. it was probably too obvious but i really hoped it was a revenge plan. in the end, it was for revenge, but only towards carmilla?? and then he asks isaac to spare lenore because he wants a peaceful life with her?
i have no words to tell you how disturbed i was about that. i just don’t understand this. maybe lenore realised what she did was bad but still, i don’t think that’s enough to forgive someone. maybe hector had some sort of trauma bonding, that’s the only explanation for me. i hated how they tried to get her some sort of redemption in the end when she k*lls herself. it wasn’t an act of “””love””” to free hector of her. it was sooo selfish. and i know she had just lost everything, i know she had feelings and everything. but when you got to be so cruel for centuries, you can’t just whine when it’s your turn to be the oppressed. she wasn’t even a prisoner like hector was, she was protected by him and still, she preferred to die instead of staying with him. this is, for me, the proof that she never loved him as it is sometimes hinted and/or largely talked about here and there. she was just using him, as she always did. for company, for sex and to have someone to rant with. that’s all. and once again, i don’t say this as a bad thing, it is actually quite interesting, for a character. still, it was super messed-up.
lenore was done wrong. hector was done wrong. and i can’t stop thinking about how all of this was so wrong.
just gonna quote someone on reddit : “Not to be that kind of person but I don't think it would have been taken well at all if it was the other way around, I mean, if Lenore was male and Hector was female.“ Just, think about this.
as a conclusion, i’ll say it again, no, lenore isn’t a bad character. she’s actually a really good one. but she deserved better (and hector too). still, i’ll continue to despise her for what she did to hector. and i will never understand anyone who ship them together. i can’t.

"don't... please. it never works out in the end." you shake your head, facing the other way. "for me at least."
"..we could work together, no?" he tried, still oblivious about your feelings towards him.
"only if you're willing to cross your moral boundaries," you looked back and tilted your head. taking a deep breath, you continued, "but you know that neither of us are willing to do that."
he couldn't say anything, because as much as he hated to admit something for once, you were right about that. at this point, he would've thought that literally any extent would've been fine to reach to bring you back.
yet in multiple situations where he's doubted himself before, theres always a line he will never cross.
"...i wish you the best. treat her well because i worked hard." you walked away without him stopping you this time. i worked hard. not we worked hard.
even if you had honestly felt that way, there was no chance the old you wouldve actually voiced that.
and so he watched you slip from his grasp again, only this time, he stopped himself from holding you back from his own will.

"You promised! Besides, everyone's waiting for you", I run my fingers through his hair, "You know how much Kirishima has been waiting to see you!" I could tell by his look at this was somehow enough for him to accept attending the party with me. All his UA classmates would be there.
"Whatever! I have to train." In a swift move he gets up and leaves the room, like he always does.
"Bakugo--! Wait!" he stops without turning to look at me. "D-Do you wanna spend the night?"
I gulped.
"I have to train", he says and leaves.
And at times like these, I ask myself, what the hell am I really doing. Having a crush on Bakugo Katsuki? That's far enough. Establishing a relationship with him? That's so far beyond the line of sanity. More times than not, I question myself for any signs of emotional masochism, because this really doesn't feel like a mutual feeling.
Yes, he can be soft and sweet, would never admit it, though. Yes, somehow, he does like me in a sexual way, at least, or maybe considers me as a way to relieve stress?
The past three months and a half have been so exciting, and I've been.. happy. But..
This really isn't enough for me. If only I could do anything to make him say what's in his mind, 'cause his actions really really don't match with his words.
And then again, well, whatever, never mind, it could all be way worse for me..

On the day of the party, Bakugo was supposed to pick me up at 8 and head over to Kirishima's together, since I've never been to his place before. I put extra effort on picking an outfit I like and felt pretty cute and confident in it.
At 7:45 I was already by the door, tying my shoes and receiving a text message by Uraraka-chan.

I can't wait for tonight! Deku-kun will also be there, haven't seen him in two weeks!

I smiled at myself and happiness overflew in me. Don't want to jinx it but tonight sounds ideal; Bakugo agreed to come, I'm going to see everyone, even Midoriya found time off his strict training schedule, and Uraraka-chan is very happy, as well, I am glad.
But as I waited for Bakugo, the clock turned 8. And then 5 minutes after 8. And then a quarter past 8.
Normally, that's acceptable, since when one is late, they probably have informed you beforehand. Or at least, an apology is waiting for you at their arrival.
Oh, but when Bakugo arrived..
"What took you so long?!!"
My mood, the outfit I wore that I liked, the excitement, all had disappeared.
"SO WHAT, I had training to do! Deku has been training all week!", he snapped back at me and frowned. "Let's go damn it!"
"You're unbelievable-! That's how you treat me?!" This time, I was not going to take it.
"Tsk, you don't understand"
"At least you could have told me you were at practice..! Not arrive, what, a quarter to 9 and not even apologizing for keeping me waiting?!"
"YOU attacked me right when I arrived, when I would I apologize?!"
I refrained from saying anything else. I didn't want to completely ruin my mood for the party.
"Okay, stop." I let out a sigh. "Let's go. I really want to enjoy the party. I even wore that outfit that it took me so long to come up with, I really wanna enjoy it.." I closed and locked the door behind us and Bakugo just stared at me.
The road to Kirishima's was quiet. I caught a few glimpses of Bakugo walking by me and leading the way. Surprisingly, he didn't say anything at all.
We passed by the river, it was beautiful and I so wanted to comment on the cherry blossoms showing as the path alongside it.
I tried not to overthink about this but it was bothering me, that Bakugo didn't even consider my feelings. He stood me up. This definitely isn't what you expect of your partner to do.
Details like this, how he never calls me just to talk to me, he never texts me "good morning" or "good night" like my friends' significant others do, how we've never really agreed to have a proper date but always meet up at home, eat inside and are secretive, I don't like that.
I think I am the only one in this relationship.
Heck, there is no real relationship. Friends with benefits, after all.
"(Y/N)! Bakugo-kun! You've arrived at last!" Uraraka-chan was the first one to greet us by the door.
"I'm sorry we're late, I asked Bakugo to pick me up since he lives so close-by, but he was training and couldn't leave early", I felt my cheeks flush up. Everyone's attention was on us and I didn't like it. "Besides, Kirishima-kun! Thanks for having us!"
Thankfully, I quickly felt comfortable and no one talked about how they've been waiting for us. We had a fun time, joking around, eating cakes that Sato baked and listening to what everyone's been up to on their vacation. I was able to forget about Bakugo's attitude, but every time I looked at him, it all came back to me, so I tried to avoid him as much.
But still, I was able to catch glimpses of him, noticing that he never looked at me too.
I am better than this.
I got up to pout myself some water and when I came back I noticed that Deku had joined Uraraka and they were cheerfully engaging in conversation by themselves, so I decided I wouldn't go back to Uraraka and third wheel them. Instead I decided to get some fresh air and went outside. The cold wind felt so nice on my face but I could tell I'd soon be cold enough to return inside.
"Y/N!", I didn't even hear Kirishima opening the balcony's door.
"Kirishima-kun, are you having fun?"
"For sure! I'm glad you could bring Bakugo with you. Wasn't really sure he'd come, since he's been eager to train as much as he can during the vacation time, but maybe having to accompany you made him responsible to come" Kirishima smiled and he'd never looked so innocent to me before.
"Ah, I just guess he came for you Kirishima-kun. You're his best friend after all."
We laughed and I suddenly felt really soft and comfortable talking about Bakugo with him.
"Kirishima-kun, you're great.. I wish I had a relationship with someone like you!"
And then I realized what I just said. Kirishima turned red and I no longer felt cold outside.
"Y/N, I-I don't think I like you like t-that.."
"Ah! No, it's okay, I don't think I do either.."
What am I saying, I know I like Bakugo.
I know he said he didn't like me but the vibe sure felt weird and tense and somehow comfortable. I could so simply say things like these with Kirishima and it did feel awkward but it was okay, we could sit in silence. And it was easier to stay outside now.
But then he called out my name, and I couldn't read his face. He surely thought that I might like him now.
I noticed Bakugo was arguing with Iida-kun by the door, when Kirishima raised his hand to cup my cheek and-
"Can I kiss you?" he whispered.
Why am I not pulling back? Maybe he wants to find out if he'd feel something.. maybe I do as well. Bakugo wouldn't even care anyways. He wouldn't be the least jealous if he saw us.
"Yes", I whispered back and closed my eyes only to feel his soft lips on mine.
It lasted a few seconds but I knew for sure that this wasn't what I felt when I kissed Bakugo.
Kirishima was now smiling softly as me and I knew we were on the same page. And this will be between us and nothing will be affected. Except that something caught his attention and he gasped ; I turned to see who else other than Bakugo staring at us.
He looked mad, but doesn't he almost always?
Suddenly I felt overwhelmed with regret towards him.
He wasn't supposed to get jealous, he has no right to!
"Ah, Bakugo saw us maybe", Kirishima shrugged, "He probably thinks we're stupid hahah"
I chuckled, not to make my uncomfortableness look so obvious and we headed back inside, since Bakugo had also disappeared from the entrance.
The rest of the night I felt so out of place and it was hard not to show, but I had to. Spent it mostly chatting with the girls and playing cards and board games.
But soon enough, it was time to go.
Midoriya had already left and so had some of the others that aren't late nighters, and I felt tired from all the tension of the day. I was glad that I had some fun though.
"I'm off, everyone!" I greeted them and put on my shoes and coat.
"I'm going to. Have to train early tomorrow"
I froze. Bakugo was also leaving and this could only mean he wanted to confront me.
I waited for him to be greeted by everyone as well. It was inevitable, we'd go the same way anyways.
But Bakugo didn't say anything. He started pacing fast and it was kind of hard to keep up.
When we reached the cherry blossoms, Bakugo stopped.
"Are you stupid? Why did you do that?!"
He was indeed jealous!
"What does it matter to you even!". Tears were forming in my eyes, I felt so guilty! But it wasn't entirely my fault!
"TO ME? That you're stupid?"
"What does it matter to you??! It didn't even matter to me!"
"Then WHY DID YOU DO THAT"
Bakugo turned around but he wasn't looking at me.
"..I.. don't know... I was curious.. "
"Tsk, 'curious', what even..!"
"I was, okay?! Kirishima was being so nice to me..."
"And you had to be stupid?!"
"STOP it! Okay? This, this is why I did that. Because I can no longer pretend that you care about me! You made that clear today!"
"I don't go around doing things a scumbag would do!"
Bakugo was starting to redden up, he had become really angry..
"BUT YOU DO!" I shouted, glad that we were the only ones on the street. "You do, when you're late and don't inform me, you do when you're embarrassed and secretive of me, you do when you never really tell me what's on your mind"
"You.." he frowned. "And YOU GO AND DO THAT"
"YES because MAYBE, MAYBE HE would actually LIKE me!"
He seemed to be taken aback. And I was properly crying. And I felt the cold wind against my face and hands. It was too bad we're ruining the effect of the beautiful cherry blossoms.
"Stupid.. STUPID STUPID STUPID", he was now pulling his hair in anger.
"Bakugo, stop! What are you doing!" I rushed out and grabbed him by his shoulders forcing him to look at me. And I felt guilty and sad to see him this angry but this had to mean something.
He looked away, avoiding my gaze at all costs.
"I should be asking you why are you being like this now..", I said softly. "It.. hurts to think about this, but did it feel like you were losing towards Kirishima?"
No answer.
"I'm sorry anyways, I am too tired to argue anymore and I'm sorry I kissed him. I.. didn't think it'd make you angry"
"Tsk, what are you apologizing for, loser.."
Bakugo's voice was soft and quiet..!
"I should be the one saying sorry. I FAILED don't you understand? I didn't make my feelings clear to you"
What?
"All this time, I've been failing to this, I don't no a thing about romance"
What?
"And you never even said anything, either! You just went along when I first kissed you!"
I had nothing to say. Suddenly, everything seemed so meaningless, because he was opening up to me.
"Bakugo.."
"No, shut up, you listen to me now. It drives me crazy cause I can't concentrate and think about you all the time! I LIKE YOUR STUPID ASS"
This can't be for real. I've always wanted him to open up but I never..
"SAY SOMETHING"
"Can you.. say that again?", I was too startled.
"Weren't you listening?!"
"No, I was, it's just that I liked hearing you say that.."
I'd forgotten I'd been holding him weirdly and suddenly felt conscious about being so close to him, when I've been closer to him so many times before, but not like this.
"Tsk, I like you stupid ass, stupid", he frowned jokingly and it was his turn to wrap his arms around me. "I like your stupid stupid ass."
My cheeks have probably never flushed as this much before.
"I like you"
He kept repeating and I felt like I could faint.
"And I promise, I won't ignore my feelings anymore and I won't be USELESS!"
I backed away to look at him.
"Bakugo,.. does this mean, we're really together?"
And Bakugo blushed!
"Yeh" he simply said.
I couldn't help but smile and the cherry blossoms were beautiful around us.
Then, Bakugo tightened his grip on my waist and brought me closer. He kissed my cheek and looked at me again. And I couldn't decide over staring at his eyes or kissing him that moment.
But I couldn't bring myself to stop, I leaned forwards and felt his soft pouty lips against mine, his warmth transmitting to my skin. And we didn't pull back for a few moments.
"Do you want to stay over, Bakugo?"
And he nodded excitedly as we walked home together.

i have opinions about The Prince of Egypt musical adaption and you’re going to listen to them: An Essay
So, quick disclaimer: The Prince of Egypt is one of my favourite movies of all time. The casting, the music, the animation, I think it’s one of the top-tier movies that have ever been made. I went into seeing the London West End production of PoE with a full expectation that nothing I saw on stage would ever live up to how much I love the movie. I was fully aware there are plenty of limitations to what can be shown live on a stage with human actors and props.
That being said, I was enormously disappointed with how the whole thing was handled.
The Good
Now before I launch into a whole tirade of what I didn’t like about the production, it does behoove me to say what I think they did do well.
The casting of the role of Moses was done fantastically, as was Miriam, Tzipporah, and Yocheved. The swings and the ensemble were really engaged and well placed, going through lots of quick changes to go from Hebrews to Egyptians to Midianites and back.
The two Egyptian queens, wifes of Seti and Ramses, are actually given names, lines, and character beyond being simply tacked onto their respective kings. We get to see how they feel about the events happening around them, and there’s even a scene where Ramses meets his wife and courts her, whereas in the movie, she stands in the background and says nothing. This is one of the areas I was hoping the musical, which would naturally have a longer run-time, would expand on, and I was pleased to see the opportunity was taken.
Light projections on enormous curtains were used to very good effect, taking us instantly inside the walls of the palace and then out to the desert.
Over all, the work was really put in to be engaging and emotional, and the orchestra really worked to deliver the right musical beats.
One of two stand out scenes as being done very well was the opening “Deliver Us”, which included a bone-chilling moment of Egyptians separating a mother and her baby, with her screams as she’s dragged off-stage, and the blood on the guard’s sword. It really brings home the fear as Yocheved tries to lead Aaron and Miriam to the river with her, not to mention Yocheved’s actress nailed the lullaby.
The second was at the other end of the show, “When You Believe” was beautifully performed by the whole cast, though it was somewhat stunted by what came before...
The Bad
Oh boy.
So the main problem with this show is not the music, not the staging, not even that sometimes the ensemble was a little off-beat (the lai-lai-lai section in Though Heaven’s Eyes comes to mind). Any mistakes there can all be forgiven, since sometimes things just happen in live performance, someone’s a bit off or something’s just not possible to do on the budget allotted.
The problem is in the script.
The Prince of Egypt movie is a story that stands not only on the shoulders of its fantastic music and visuals, but also on its emotive retelling and portrayal of the characters within - mainly Moses and Ramses. And while the stage musical does spend a lot of time with the two mains, it neglects two other, incredibly important characters.
Pharaoh Seti, and God.
In the movie, Seti strikes an intimidating figure. He is old, hardened, and wise in the ways of ruling his kingdom - and is voiced by Patrick Stewart, who brings his A-game to the role. Both Moses and Ramses admire him and look up to him immensely as young men, and the relationship he has with both of them deeply informs their characters as the story progresses. It’s from Seti that Moses learns that taking responsibility for your actions is the respectable thing to do (and later, the true horror of having your idol turn out to be not what you think), and it’s from Seti that Ramses takes a huge inferiority complex.
There are two lines that Seti gets in the movie, one spoken to Moses, and one to Ramses. These two lines define Moses and Ramses’ actions later on in the story:
To Ramses - “One weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty!”
To Moses - “Oh my son... they were only slaves.”
Guess which two lines are absent from the musical?
One Weak Link is turned into an upbeat song, rather than shouted at a terrified and cowed young Ramses. Instead of being openly a traumatic, internalised moment of negative character development for Ramses, it’s treated as a general philosophy that Seti passes down to his son. Instead of a judgement that is hung over Ramses’ head like a sword of Damocles, lingering in his mind through the whole story and coming up in a shouted argument with Moses later, it’s said and then moved on from.
The “they were only slaves” comment, on the other hand, is absent entirely. This changes Moses’ relationship with Seti enormously, as well as his relationship with the Hebrew people. Upon finding the mural depicting the killing of the slave children, Moses is appropriately horrified, and Seti shows up to comfort him and defend his terrible actions. Moses leaves this interaction... and then sings about how this is indeed all he ever wanted! He has no moment of horrific realisation that his father thinks of the slaves as lesser, as lives that can be thrown away. This means that the scene where he kills the guard doesn’t lead into a discussion of morality with Ramses as he runs away, but rather Moses breaking down about his heritage as though it’s a negative, instead of something he’s realised is just as valuable as his life as an Egyptian. Instead of Moses being shown as having a strong moral core that protests against the idea of any life being lesser, he bemoans his Hebrew blood loudly, and makes little mention of the man he killed. His issue that causes him to run away is being adopted, rather than his guilt that he’s a murderer, and nothing Ramses can say will change it.
Later on, we don’t see Ramses express this opinion either (in the movie - M:”Seti’s hands bore the blood of thousands of children!” R:“Hah, slaves!” M:“My people!”) so it seems the core reasoning for the necessity of the extremes God had to go to in order to convince Ramses to let the Hebrews go is completely gone.
Which leads us into God Himself, as a character.
God is a tricky topic in general. He is hard to talk about as a concept and as a character, and even harder to depict in a way that won’t offend someone. The Prince of Egypt movie always struck me as a very good depiction of the Old Testament God - vengeful and strong-willed, commanding and yet nurturing, capable of great mercy and great cruelty in one fell swoop. God is incredibly present in the story, a character in and of Himself, speaking with Moses rather than simply commanding him. The conversation at the Burning Bush is bone-chillingly beautiful. Moses is allowed to question, he’s allowed to enquire, he’s allowed to express how he feels about God’s choice, and God is given the chance to respond (and reprimand, and comfort).
In the musical, the Burning Bush scene lasts all of two minutes, during which God (the ensemble cast, acting as one moving flame, speaking in unison) monologues to Moses, and Moses is not given room to question, talk to, or build a relationship with God. Later on, once some of the plagues have gotten underway, Moses rails against God, flinches in his resolve, and tries to back out... and God says nothing. It’s Miriam and the spirit of Yocheved that convince Moses to keep going. As a character, God is nearly absent. Even when it comes to calling upon the Plagues, or parting the Red Sea, God’s voice is absent. Moses does not pray. He does not even use the staff that God encouraged him to pick up as a symbol of his becoming a shepherd of the Hebrews out of Egypt.
It’s these little changes, these little absences of such vital lines and presences, that ends up changing the whole vibe of the show. Seti is more like a dad than an emotionally distant authority figure, and God is more like an emotionally distant authority figure than a character at all. Ultimately, the whole feeling that one is left with at the end…
The Ugly
… is that the script doesn’t like God, or religion in general.
A bold statement to make, considering the source material is one of the central biblical stories in EVERY Abrahamic religion. Moses as a figure is considered so important and close to god, that The Prince of Egypt, even with its sensitive portrayal, cannot be aired in a number of Islamic states, because it’s considered disrespectful to depict any of the prophets, especially an important one like Moses. Moses is arguably the MOST important prophet in the Jewish canon.
However, I haven’t highlighted one of the most noticeable script changes - the elevation of Hotep, the high priest, to main antagonist.
In the original movie, Hotep is a secondary villain, a crony to the Pharaohs, bumbling and snide and two-faced. He and his fellow priest Hoy are there primarily to juxtapose how charlatans can control power through flattery and slight of hand, reassuring Ramses that Moses’ miracles are merely magic the same as what they can do. They even get a whole villain song, “Playing With The Big Boys” which is a lovely deconstruction of lyrics vs visuals, where while the priests boast that their gods and magic are much more powerful, in the background the staff, transformed into a snake by god, devours and defeats the priests’ snake handily. The takeaway from the song is that God’s power is true, and doesn’t need theatrics.
It’s a good little nugget of wordless world building. And it is completely absent from the stage musical, with only a vague reference to the chant of all the gods names.
Hoy is gone, and Hotep is the only priest. He actively speaks out against the Pharaoh, boasts about having all the power, and is played as bombastic and proud. He’s a wildly different character, even threatening Ramses at one point. In the end, it’s shown that Ramses won’t let the Hebrews go not because he has inherited his father Seti’s cruel attitude towards the lives he considers beneath him, but because he is being actively bullied by the priest, and will lose his power and credibility if he doesn’t do as he’s told. Ramses is even given a whole song about how little power he really has. The script desperately wants us to feel sorry for Ramses’ position and hate the unrepentantly, cartoonishly evil priest.
That’s another matter as well - a LOT of time is dedicated to making the Egyptians more human and sympathetic, portraying them as largely ignorant of the suffering beneath them, rather than actively participating in slavery. Characters speak out of turn without regard for formality and class, even to the royal family. They are casual, chummy even. And this would be fine - in fact, it’s good to have that sort of third dimension to characters, even ones who are doing reprehensible things, to show the total normalcy and banality of evil - if it were not for the fact they still include a completely open-and-shut case of evil right next to them.
Hotep has no redeeming features. And on the other side, God is barely present, certainly not in a relatable context. Moses has several lines about how cruel and unnecessary God’s plagues are - and you know what, in this version, they are unnecessary! Ramses is not the stone-hearted ruler that his movie counterpart is, he has no baggage over being a potential failure, because it was never really given to him in the same way! By taking away Ramses’ threatening nature, numbers like the Plagues lose half their appeal, as the back-and-forth ‘you who I called brother’ lines between Moses and Ramses are completely absent. Moses is faithless, and is less torn between the horror of what he’s doing and the necessity of it for the freedom of his people, and more left scrabbling for meaning that he doesn’t find. And the only thing hanging over Ramses is Hotep nit-picking everything he does and threatening him, which is considerably less compelling than the script seems to think it is.
This is best exemplified at the end, when all the issues come to a head. The angel of Death comes and takes the Egyptian first borns (which was actually a well done scene), and the Hebrews leave to a rousing rendition of When You Believe. But then we cut to Ramses and Hotep, with Hotep openly threatening to revolt against the Pharaoh - whom was believed, especially by the priesthood, to be a living god! Hotep is so devoid of redeeming features he cannot even be trusted to stand by his beliefs! - unless Ramses agrees to chase after the Hebrews. Reluctantly, Ramses is badgered into the attempt.
Back with the Hebrews, Moses parts the Red Sea… not with his faith, not by praying to God for another miracle, not even by using his staff as in the most famous scene of the movie… but by holding out his hand and demanding the ‘magic’ work. Setting aside the disrespect of Abrahamic religions to call one of the most famous miracles “magic” (and my oh my, if there was a fundamentalist of any religion in the audience they might have gasped to hear it), it again belittles the work of God, and puts all the onus on Moses, not as a conduit for God’s work, but as the worker himself. Then, the Egyptians arrive in pursuit, lead by Hotep, not Ramses. Moses sends the Hebrews through first, lead by Miriam, and stays behind with Tzipporah… to offer his life in penance to Ramses! The script has completely stripped both Ramses and Moses of their convictions towards their causes, and Moses cannot even stand by his decision to lead his people.
Then, in a moment of jarring melodrama, Moses has a sudden vision that Ramses, his brother, will one day be called Ramses the Great (an actual historical Pharaoh who reigned 1279-1213 BCE). There is no historical evidence that this was the Ramses that ruled over the Hebrews (there are 11 Pharaohs called Ramses through the history of Ancient Egypt), and maybe if the scene was acted a little better, it wouldn’t have been so sudden or jarring. Even more jarring, is that then Hotep arrives with the rest of the army, and Ramses refuses to lead the charge into the parted sea. Hotep does so himself, and is the one to have the final dramatic moment, being crushed under the water.
The Takeaway
After watching the show, I’m afraid I could never recommend it as either a play, an adaption, or even as a faithful retelling of a bible story. Its character drama isn’t compelling enough to be good as a standalone play, with it two main characters declawed and their core motivations reduced to a squabble between brothers rather than a grand interplay between two cultures and ideas and trauma handed down from their father. As an adaption of the movie it’s upsettingly bad, with grand numbers like the Plagues rendered piecemeal and fan favourites like Playing With The Big Boys missing entirely. As a retelling of the bible story, it’s insulting, completely cutting God out of the equation, taking no opportunity to reintroduce Aaron as an important character (which he was, in the bible, as Moses was a notoriously bad public speaker, with a stutter, and Aaron often interpreted for him) and more importantly, completely erasing God’s influence from the narrative.
I don’t know who this show was… for, in that case. If it wasn’t for drama lovers, movie fans, or people of the faith, then who the hell was it for? Why change such a critically acclaimed and well-beloved story? Why take away all these defining moments? If you wanted to tell a story about how religion is the true evil, how God can command people to do terrible things, and how those who uphold organised religion like Hotep are unrepentant, one-dimensional monsters… why would you tell that through the Prince of Egypt?
Underwhelming at best, infuriating at worst… just watch the movie. Or read Exodus. At least the Bible’s free.
