Book that I sent out as an interlibrary loan today: We're not saying whether you should or should not Do the Thing. All we're saying is here's a bunch of cherry-picked information about how Doing the Thing is Bad and Evil and Deadly, presented in the most loaded language possible, with no acknowledgement of any arguments in favor of Doing the Thing. No bias and no pressure whatsoever. The choice is 100% up to you!

part 2 of modern!uni!coriolanus x fem!reader. part 1 here, part 3 here. as promised, reader's a lil cuckoo which i hope yall are into because it's here to stay. on this, if anyone feels like offering thoughts -- would longer updates be preferable, or does it make no difference? the only tradeoff would be that they'd come out less frequently (once a week vs every 2-3 days). warnings: blood mention, minor suggestive material. this is not a healthy relationship but BOY is it fun
Coriolanus Snow, as it turns out, is wonderful to date, at least for you. You've been back from the winter holiday for a month, and though you've yet to make anything official with him, things are going very well. He doesn't text constantly, but there will always be a good morning text when you get back from the gym, and a good night text when you check your phone after hours at the library. He makes it clear that you're together when you're out with an arm around your waist or a hand over yours on the table, or with the faint bruises that trail across your collarbone and down your shirt. That's your favourite mark of your relationship: it's illicit, obvious. You know it makes other people a little uncomfortable, and you like that they can't seem to look away.
He's also fascinating. Orphaned when he was quite young and raised by his grandmother and cousin, you've learned that while he obviously has money now, he didn't always. He had a stint in the military to pay for school, and got a job for his best friend’s father as a thank-you for saving the boy’s life in battle. Apparently the friend had been court-martialed for something – Coriolanus wouldn't go into detail – and now they weren't as close. He now makes more money than most people would dream of twenty years out of school, and though it means he's almost always busy, you like that he's so dedicated.
Right now, you're bent over a sheet of stats equations at a table on the quad when Coriolanus sneaks up behind you. He drops a kiss on your head and settles in an open seat at your table.
“Hello,” you say, setting down your pen.
“Don't let me distract you,” he replies, pulling a book out of his bag. “I'll wait until you're done to talk.”
This is another thing you appreciate about Coriolanus. Besides that first date, he understands how much you value school and your grades – he actually seems to like it – and never expects to come first. You blow through the last few problems, check your work, and clip the paper neatly into your binder.
Coriolanus looks up from his book. “Finished?”
“Mhm.”
“Good,” he says. “How's that class going, by the way?”
You keep apprised of each other’s academic performances – you're both shooting to graduate valedictorian next year, so you've got a little bit of competition going. As far as you can tell, it only serves to push both of you further, as winning seems more of a reward if there's been a real challenge for it. This being said, he knows that your statistics class is giving you a little bit of trouble, just like you know that his Victorian literature class is driving him up the wall. You're going to win, but you'll let him hope.
“Not as badly as you might hope,” you tease. “I'm on track for a decent A. How goes the adventures in Victorian lit?”
He lifts his book miserably, revealing the cover of Middlemarch. You wince.
“Rough. Don't make winning too easy on me, though.”
“Wouldn't dream of it, sweetheart.”
You smile at the pet name, however targeted it is. “So did you come to make fun of my homework, or did you have something you wanted to talk about?”
“Right, yes. We've been going out for a little over a month now.”
“This is true.”
“And I think it's time we make some decisions. I'm not looking for something casual. Between school and studying for the LSAT and work, I don't really have the time to devote to something that's definitely not going anywhere.”
“I hope you're not proposing, Coriolanus.”
“Not at all. But I am asking if you would like to be my girlfriend, officially.”
“Oh! Yes.”
“Yes?” He seems surprised.
“I'm not particularly interested in anything casual either,” you say. “I’ve tried it and it doesn't work. I just get jealous.”
“I wouldn't have pegged you for the jealous type.”
“You haven't given me any reason to be. Believe me, if I'm jealous, I'll make sure you know.”
You regret saying that the minute you do – not because it's not true, but because it could be a little off-putting. But it seems to have the opposite effect for Coriolanus, who bares his teeth in a smile. The wider his smile gets, the more he looks like a wolf, the more you feel like he is waiting for the perfect moment to sink his teeth into your neck. Perhaps it should scare you, but it doesn't. It thrills you. It makes you want to tilt your head back and let him take hold, because you want to see your blood on his teeth and trickling down his chin, staining the starched white of his collar. You want to ruin this boy, which you would feel worse about thinking if you didn't get the sense that he wants to destroy you, too.
“I hope you would,” he says, lifting you from your reverie. “As long as it's okay that it goes both ways.”
“Of course.” Perfect.
“Are you free tonight?”
“I have a class that ends at 6, but after that, yes.”
“Would you like to meet my family? You'll love my cousin, and my grandmother…well. She doesn't like anyone, but she's interesting.”
“That sounds lovely,” you say, a thrill flooding you at going from occasional dates and make-out sessions to meeting his family in the course of an afternoon.
“Fine, then. I'll pick you up at 7.”
The Snow apartment is incredible. There's a sterility to its modernity that should be disquieting but isn't: you can't imagine Coriolanus growing up anywhere else. You're sitting with his cousin, Tigris, while he disappears to make drinks. The fabled grandmother was apparently refusing to make an appearance. Tigris seems anxious, fiddling with her floral skirt.
“So you're dating Coriolanus?” She asks finally. Your brows knit together – is she daft? Coriolanus introduced you as his girlfriend.
“Mhm. We've been going out for a little over a month.”
“Oh.”
When she doesn't say anything else, you shift uncomfortably in your seat.
“Coriolanus tells me you basically raised him,” you say, wanting to fill the silence.
Tigris nods. “He was such a kind little boy. I worry I didn't do enough sometimes, you know?”
What a weird thing to say. “I'm sure you did your best. I can't imagine it's easy bringing someone else up when you're a kid yourself. And he's turned out well, from what I can tell.”
“He can just be…intense. I'm sorry, I know this is strange, I just want you to know what you're getting into.”
You laugh lightly. “Maybe I need to find someone to give him this speech about me. I'll be okay, Tigris. I can be a lot too; I think we'll be good for each other.”
Coriolanus returns just at that moment.
“I think we'll be good for each other too,” he says, handing you and Tigris each a glass of red wine. “I hope my cousin hasn't been telling you too many embarrassing baby stories.”
Something passes over Tigris’ face – grief, maybe, or fear – before she settles into a demure smile.
“Not at all, Coriolanus. Your girlfriend is so sweet.”
He sits next to you and puts his free hand on your knee. “She's perfect, isn't she? I knew you guys would get along.”
Tigris gives him a tight smile, then lets her eyes go unfocused into space.
The rest of the night passes with much of the same uncomfortable conversation, until Coriolanus finally decides that it'd be best if he drove you home before it got too late. It's the first time you've seen him drive, and you just enjoy the way the streetlights cast shadows on the angles of his face and the way his hand sits hot and heavy on your thigh.
“I'm sorry if Tigris said anything strange to you,” he says finally. “She's been odd ever since I got back from being deployed.”
“She was fine. I think she was worried you'd be too much for me.”
A muscle jumps in his jaw. “She doesn't approve of my job. Or my ‘work-life balance’, as she calls it.”
“Sounds like she cares about you.” It's hard to say more, because you don't really know what he does for work. Something with national security or defense tech, but beyond that, you're in the dark. It also seems like there was more to the way Tigris was acting than just complaints about Coriolanus working too hard, but it's not your place to pry. Nor do you really care.
“No, you're right. She does. I just wish she'd keep her opinions to herself.”
“That’s fair. I'm still glad I got to meet her.”
“I am too. And I'm always glad to spend time with you.”
To say that, he takes his eyes off the road for a moment and gives you a sweet, close-lipped smile. You return it and place your hand over his on your thigh. His fingers dig in a little too hard, and you curl your nails like claws into his skin in reply. He pulls the car into a parking space in front of your apartment.
“Here you are.”
You turn to him and take in the way he's looking at you, the way his eyes have gone murky in the dark of the night and trail across the scooping neckline of your top. The skin on your neck is pristine again, and you need him to fix that.
“Would you like to come upstairs?”
“I was hoping you'd say that.”

with finals week drawing ever closer, it can sometimes feel like you're going insane with the repetitive revision and those god awful prep talks from your professors but adding onto that to make things worse, the most (seemingly) sane person in your circle really doesn't help the looming feeling of insanity. he seems to have no qualms with the endless academic revision thrown onto you for the sake of grades, his head always buried deep in a textbook that keeps him occupied whilst your friend circle do what they're best at… procrastinating.
"i'm really starting to think college isn't worth it," you mumble, highlighting another line in your notes - you're hoping the pretty colours will attract your attention more, "when am i ever going to use this in the 'real' world?"
your boyfriend makes an evidently amused noise from where he sits opposite you, his slim fingers working diligently at typing on his laptop; the one that you had snuck a cat meme sticker onto, much to his dismay but he is still yet to remove it. it is silent for a few moments save for the exceptionally fast clicking of laptop keys before your boyfriend presses the enter key, his turquoise eyes flickering up to meet your already staring gaze. you smile sheepishly and he rolls his eyes, a crack of a smile on the corners of his lips.
"we're almost finished and you're giving up now?" he mumbles back into the quiet of the library, almost filled to the brink with students and their numerous cups of coffee. you recognise that alhaitham has a point but all of this seems excessive when you glance around at all the dark circles under people's eyes, hair tied up in messy buns and stomachs full of leftover food because they're lacking time to cook. a frown adorns your face and alhaitham is quick to pick up on it, clearing his throat as he fixes his posture, sitting straight.
"it's all we've done for weeks now, haitham," you pout, jutting your lower lip out. without realising, you'd just made your boyfriend keen in a matter of seconds, his eyes quick to look away before he's caught slacking, "can we go for a walk? anywhere but… here."
alhaitham can't deny that the pair of you had locked yourselves away in the library for far too long to the point where his limbs have gone stiff and he's sure his knees might sound like he's aged beyond his years when he stands up. this means - much to his disliking - that he also cannot deny you, his darling partner, this walk you're requesting.
"alright, fine," he groans, slamming his laptop shut before he turns his body to slip the piece of technology into his worn leather satchel. he doesn't miss the way your face he adores so much lights up almost instantly, your eyes twinkling and wide, "but you have to promise to finish this chapter tonight."
you don't even reply to him under the premise that it'd be unwise for you to make a promise you may not be able to keep, not that it would be your fault. your friend group had tendencies to rope you into unwise things, to say the least. it could be any of them; kaveh, nilou, cyno, dehya… you have the inability to say no unless alhaitham is there to beat you to it. you're thankful for his input when it keeps you on the right track throughout college.
with your fingers laced with alhaitham's own, the two of you begin to make your way out of the jail that is the campus library. the spring sun beams down a hug of warmth on sumeru during these months, slightly sticky with humidity. alhaitham is always less than pleased about the heat, more so when he has tasks to do that require him leaving his accommodation. to quote your boyfriend, this weather in his eyes is good for nothing at all but here you was, removing him from the safe confides of an air conditioned building that was nonetheless silent - that's his idea of perfection! he bites back saying his complaints out loud, only because it's you.
"do we have a destination to this walk?" alhaitham breaks the silence first, slightly out of character for your boyfriend and it shows when you glance over at him in mild surprise, your eyebrows raised. he scoffs, looking away. you take this moment to trail your eyes over the beloved features of your partner from his silver locks and the pair of white bluetooth headphones that hang around his neck at all times. he never parted from them, almost like how he never parted from you.
you shake your head when you realise you never answered him, clicking your tongue to your teeth as you admire the bustle of the college campus - usually a little too crowded for your own liking but today it seemed to be just perfect, at least it lacked to feel like a sweaty tin of sardines, "nowhere in particular."
alhaitham appears to nod out of the corner of your eyes, his own gaze falling to a patch of empty grass on the green in the middle of campus. he squeezes your hand to catch your attention, beginning to lead you silently as you weave through the aforementioned crowds you'd been mindlessly watching prior. you didn't question his sudden change in directions, knowing alhaitham there was always a possibility the man had gotten overwhelmed in the current situation. he settles onto the lush grass first, pulling you down at his side due to your joined hands which only earns him a yelp of shock and a glare.
"that was unnecessary." you comment stubbornly and a small noise comes from your boyfriend as he watches you finally settle down, resting your head on his shoulder with a sigh.
"this walk was unnecessary." he retorts, earning him a slap on his leg that curls his lips as he looks away, squinting to watch other students.
"it's good to get outside and feel the fresh air, haitham," you muse as your eyelashes flutter shut, relaxing as you feel alhaitham's thumb brushing over your knuckles subconsciously - this is just one of his many habits he does without realising but you most definitely notice every single one, "y'know… photosynthesis."
alhaitham scoffs, suddenly turning his attention back to you as he glances over your face while your eyes are shut. he takes in the way you styled your hair today and the minor details of your face you think nobody notices. seconds pass with no more words said before alhaitham leans to press his lips to you, catching you off guard as your eyes widen. pleased with your reaction, he pulls away with the faintest of a smug expression on his face as he dares to utter a response to your earlier comment, "love, we're not plants."

me gustas means i like you
ch. 09 stay focused
warnings: she/her pronouns, cuss words, sad feelings and emotional whiplash 🤡
a/n: HELLO !! here’s this chapter, it’s written, and i’m quite proud of it methinks :) tell me your thoughts!
ch 08 || ch 09 || ch 10
masterlist
Tumblr media
bini🫥: hey what if we do tutoring at ur place instead of the library? it’s closer to my apartment than campus
bini🫥: if ur comfortable of course!
[y/n]: oh, yeah! that’s fine :)
[y/n]: door’s unlocked you can just walk in !!
[y/n] knew, from the moment seungmin and felix had befriended her, that it was all a bad idea.
her study abroad semester was supposed to be a strictly-academic experience. she had told herself, promised, that she would be 100% focused in school and nothing else. no friends, no dating, nothing that could potentially distract or hurt her in the end. it was the smart thing to do; emotional ties would most certainly lead to disaster. what was she supposed to do when the semester was over? what if long distance didn’t work? what if people forgot about her? found someone better? the only logical solution was to stay away from it all.
but nothing about friendship was logical. it wasn’t formulaic, there was no way to avoid it. seungmin and felix had taken her in, and she couldn’t do anything to stop it. she should have said no when they asked her to hang out. she should have stuck to her plan, but she didn’t and now there were people she could hurt.
guilt had been consuming her slowly, steadily crawling its way into her heart and carving a hole in her chest. it was all a bad idea, she should have stayed away from the start. she should have said no and only talked about their project. how horrible of a person was she, to knowingly get attached to them, only to have to leave in the end?
bini🫥: i’ll be there in five !!
then there was changbin.
[y/n] had tried her best to stop it. she had tried to remind herself that her time there was short. she tried to remind herself that she didn’t have the time or the strength to deal with anything beyond friendship. she tried to distance herself from changbin and his charm and his way of making her feel like the most important girl in the world. yet all her efforts had proven futile, and she had no choice but to face her reality.
there was no more room in her heart for denial. she couldn’t blame her quick heartbeat on tutor jitters anymore. running away from her feelings would not make them any less true. this was real; her feelings for him were real. and that scared her more than anything.
“[Y/N]!” changbin’s loud voice interrupted her thoughts. “PLEASE OPEN THE DOOR, MY HANDS ARE FULL!”
she rolled her eyes and snorted; his presence always managed to make everything better.
when [y/n] opened the door, she found herself face to face with the boy that made her heart ache in more ways than one. he was smiling that smile that made his nose scrunch up, and if [y/n] didn’t feel as guilty as she already did, she would’ve kissed him.
“hola, mi vida.” another smile, another scrunch of the nose. god, she really did like him. “sorry, couldn’t open the door, hands are full.”
“binnie, why did you bring so many snacks? i have stuff here.” she stepped aside to let him in, watching him walk into her kitchen like it was his own.
“well i got stuff you like, i got stuff i like, and then i thought i could get new things we could try together-” changbin stopped talking abruptly, a frown settling in his features as he looked at her.
“why are you looking at me like that, what did i do?”
“mi cielo.” he walked over to her, buff arms stretched out and gentle hands reaching for her face. ‘“why is your nose red? are you warm? are you sick?”
“i’m okay.” she held his wrist as he felt her cheeks with the back of his hand.
“[y/n], are you sure?” he pushed her air back and away from her face, worried eyes staring into her own.
the softness of his voice and the kindness in his features made her eyes well up with tears. how was she supposed to explain this to him? how could she tell him she liked him, and that it would hurt them both at the end? how could she have done this to him?
“will you feel better if i did aegyo?”
of course, the most changbin thing to do was to try and make her laugh through her tears.
“i’d actually cry harder, please don’t.”
“you’re spending too much time with seungmin.” he let go of her face and frowned. she wanted him to hold her again. “he has corrupted you.”
“yes, yeah, whatever.”
“spend more time with me instead, i can un-seungmin you.”
“we’re spending time together right now.”
“it’s tutoring, it doesn’t count!”
“oh my fucking god, just get your snacks, we have shit to do!”
“and we can hang out after, yes?”
“yes! jesus fuck!”

Can you do cc!tommy with academic rivals to lovers and fake dating please?
Fake dating and Tommy is just mmmm
Pairing: CC!Tommy x Gn!Reader
Academic Rivals To Lovers - Fake Dating
Tumblr media
“I need you to date me.”
You jerk your head up from your book to meet Tommy’s eyes. The last time you spoke to him was him cussing you out in Spanish class, so you aren’t quite sure how you got here.
“Excuse me?” You choke out.
“I need you to date me. Now. My friends invited me to a gathering, and I’ve been lying to them about dating someone for a long time.”
“Why don’t you just get a real date? Problem solved.”
“Because I don’t want a real fucking date! And I know you feel nothing ever, so you’re my best bet.”
What are you meant to say to that? Thank you? Tommy had a knack for statements you aren’t sure how to respond to.
For two long years, you two have been practically trying to murder each other through grades. Always neck and neck, it was infuriating. When he scored below you in maths, you scored below him in video design.
“What’s in it for me?” You ask.
“I’m really fucking desperate.”
Wow. The Tom Simons admitting he’s desperate? For your help? You’ve definitely fallen into an alternate timeline, but you weren’t about to complain.
“The trophy from the best video in video design class.”
It was a cheap plastic thing, but you both knew what it symbolized. He held it over you every single day in that stupid class and you were tired of it.
“No.”
“Have fun trying to find someone else to fake date you then.”
You start to pack up your books, tucking them away in your bag. It’s only when you stand up from the library table that he finally speaks.
“Fucking fine. Fine!”
Called it. Talking to Tommy was like playing a game of chess, except his pieces were fucking possessed or some shit.
“You’ll give me the trophy?”
“Yes!” He exclaims.
“Cool. So what do I have to do?”
“Just pretend you’re dating me. And that you like me. The story is that we’ve been dating for seven months and met when I sat down next to you at lunch. You were charmed by my amazing humor and hotness.”
“Oh, yeah, like anyone’s going to believe that.”
You roll your eyes, but you can’t deny that his humor is pretty good. It takes some adjusting to, but in the end you found yourself hiding laughter.
“You’re my fake partner, what I say goes.” He argues.
“I’m just saying, if your so-called friends are-"
“Hey! They’re real! Should I teach you their names? Is that something you’d know?”
Jesus. This was going to be a shit show, wasn’t it?
“I’m going to go, just text me what I need to know and I’ll be there.”
“Okay. You swear you’ll do it?”
Pausing, you take a second to analyze his face. Tommy was always an open book, something you actually like about him. Right now you can tell he’s genuinely doubting you’re going along with this.
Honestly, you can hardly believe you’re going along with it either. But blackmail is blackmail, and you really want that fucking trophy.
“Do you need me to pinkie promise or something?” You jokingly ask, slinging your bag over your shoulder.
“I’ll fucking take it. I need a lot of luck on my side for this one.”
He holds out his pinkie, dead serious. Tommy’s right about one thing: he’ll need a shit ton of luck. So, you lock your pinkie with his, then give him a solemn nod.
“We tell no one.”
“We’ll stage a breakup a week after or something.” He agrees.
As you walk away, you contemplate what the fuck you just did. Did you seriously just agree to fake date a guy you hate? For a trophy?
Hell yeah.
———
The house Tommy told you to go to is nice. Relatively simple, but nice. He’s already waiting for you when you arrive, nervously bouncing on his feet.
“There you are!” He exclaims. “You’re fucking late!”
“First off, hi to you too. Secondly, the traffic was shit. Don’t blame me, blame my Uber driver.” It was true. You even left a full two minutes early!
“I’ll blame both of you. Hurry up, I had to make a bullshit excuse that you spilled water on your shirt.”
Tommy grabs your hand, practically dragging you up to the front door before knocking. It takes a minute but a guy a bit taller than Tommy opens the door, fluffy brown hair falling into his eyes. Wilbur, if the photo Tommy sent you last night was accurate.
“Tommy!” Wilbur exclaims before his eyes fall on you. “Holy shit, your partner is fucking real. Jack’s not gonna believe this. Jack!”
“Okay, great, everyone is real. Can we go inside now? Thanks.” Tommy practically shoves his way past Wilbur, making you come along with him.
“Sorry, Wilbur. You know Tommy. I like your sweater though!” You apologize.
“You know my name,” Wilbur says, closing the door and following you guys.
“Um, yeah. He talks about you guys a lot.”
It’s not a complete lie. You’ve definitely heard him talk about these people to Eryn before.
“You talk about us a lot?” Wilbur asks, eyes widening. “Aw, Tommy-“
“Shut up! Stop embarrassing me!” Tommy cries.
He finally reaches his destination, the one he's been dragging you to the entire time: the living room.
There are even more people in here, sprawled about on various furniture. Suddenly you're grateful for the overkill he had done on teaching you all of their names. You don't realize how you're squeezing Tommy's hand until he squeezes back, an assurance you're entirely unused to. It's weird but welcomed.
"Woah. He wasn't lying about you." A practically bald guy says, jaw dropped. Jack, you think.
"That's what I said!" Wilbur exclaims from behind you two.
"Jesus fucking Christ, did you all really think I'd lie about dating someone? I'm not that pathetic."
You can't contain your laugh, but you attempt to hide it behind your hand. Because Tommy wasn't just pathetic enough to lie about dating someone, he was pathetic enough to fake date his literal rival.
"Well..." Jack shrugs.
"Oi!"
"Good job, Tommy. Didn't think I'd live to see the day." Another person speaks up. This time you know for certain that it's James Marriott speaking.
Why did Tommy have to have so many weird adult friends?
"Hey, leave them alone." A fourth voice defends you both, coming from behind you.
"Phil!" Tommy cries, letting go of your hand to spin around. "Our savior!"
"Yeah yeah, just sit down." Phil laughs.
Tommy doesn't hesitate to take up residence on the couch, leaving you to awkwardly follow him. Nobody ever talks about how awkward it is to fake date someone.
"Right, I want to know how the fuck you got tricked into dating Tommy." Wilbur says.
It's not malicious, nor is the laughter that follows. A quick glance at Tommy shows that even he's laughing. Suddenly Tommy's humor makes a lot more sense.
"He lured me in with promises of creating a Minecraft realm." You tease, taking his hand. He seems confused at the action, so you raise your eyebrows just slightly. You're in this now, if you got found out it'd be embarrassing for the both of you.
"That sounds like Tommy." James agrees.
"What can I say? They call me the romancer."
"You know, Tommy's told us a lot about you. I always believed you were real. Just for the record." Phil glares at Wilbur as if he's to blame for the idea you might not be real.
"What has he been saying? Hopefully nothing about my lack of actual Minecraft skill."
"Oh, no. Tommy's actually even more talkative when it comes to you."
Wait, you thought Tommy lied about dating someone so his friends wouldn't make fun of him. Why would he spin himself into an intricate web of lies by talking about his made-up partner? You knew he was way smarter than that. It presented too many opportunities to slip up.
"I swear to God he doesn't shut up about you. It's really fucking sweet. Always talking about how you scored higher than him on a test, or-"
"Okay, Jack, shut the fuck up now." Tommy interrupts.
"No, I want to hear what you've said about me! It's sweet!" You were starting to get a feeling that something was off here.
"You wore glasses to school once and for a week straight he was-"
"OKAY! I THINK WE'RE THIRSTY!" Tommy yells, standing up.
You take your chance and go with him, following him through the house to the kitchen. There was definitely something you needed to talk about.
The thing was, you had worn glasses to school once. Nearly a year ago. And you were also the only person that ever scored above him on tests.
Tommy had been telling his friends about you, pretending you were dating him.
"Listen, I can explain-" He begins the second he's turned on the tap.
"Can you? Because that sure as hell sounded like you've been pretending I was dating you this entire time. Is that why you wanted me to do this?"
You weren't even sure how to feel about this! Pissed, because you got tricked? Flattered, because he noticed that shit? That he's been talking to his friends about you? But then again, you were meant to hate each other!
"They kept wanting more details! You were the first person to come to mind so I just kind of... ran with it? Listen, I'm really fucking sorry. And yeah, that's part of the reason why I asked you to do this. But it means nothing."
Apologies from Tommy were as rare as netherite. When he offers you the filled cup of water, you take it. It feels like an offering of peace, his own type of olive branch.
"Nothing except that you think of me all the time." You can't help but tease, watching how his cheeks redden.
"Because you're an annoying ass!"
"Oh no, you've called me an annoying ass! My feelings are mortally wounded!"
"Fuck off." He says, but he's laughing.
"I'm dying!" You wheeze, slowly collapsing against the counter.
"No you aren't!"
"How could you do this to me? Your partner!"
"Everything okay? Did you break the fucking tap?" Wilbur yells.
"We're good!" Tommy yells back. "Come on, let's distract them with Mario Kart."
As it turns out, his friends are very easily distracted by competitive games. And they get extremely into them.
Tommy's friends fit him perfectly, and as time goes on you can see him relax more now that you've passed the hardest part of the gathering. You find yourself relaxing, too. They're a fun friend group. If they weren't Tommy's, you'd be looking to steal them.
After a while, you give up on trying to beat Phil's incredible Mario Kart skills, content to just watch the chaos unfold as everyone tries to rally against him. The tournament goes late into the night because someone made the mistake of picking the max number of races possible. (You're pretty sure it was Jack, but he keeps blaming it on James.)
At some point Phil paused the game to hand out blankets and pillows to anyone who wanted one, not even giving you and Tommy a choice before chucking one at your face. Thank God Tommy had good enough reflexes to catch it because you sure as hell didn't.
Despite it all being fake, it's cozy. You're here on a complete fluke and Tommy's incompetence at finding someone to date, but you can't help but wish, just a little, that this was real. Probably just the exhaustion speaking though.
"Aw, look at the couple." Phil coos, drawing everyone's attention to you and Tommy.
You're curled up close to him because Phil only gave you both one blanket. No other reason. Nope, none at all.
"Kiss," Wilbur says simply.
"What?" Tommy asks, laughing a little like Wilbur's making a joke.
"Kiss," Wilbur repeats, a tad bit more insistent.
Oh, fuck. He knows. Or at the very least he suspects something.
"You don't have to," Tommy whispers, so quiet that only you can hear it.
"We kiss or get found out. I'm not risking the latter." You answer, just as quietly.
In the end, it's Tommy who makes the move and kisses you. It's short, barely a peck on the lips. But it's still a kiss with Tommy. Tommy, your literal academic rival.
"Happy, you fuckers?" He groans.
"Very." Wilbur nods. His eyes meet yours for a second before he turns back to the screen.
He definitely fucking knows.
"I'm going to the bathroom." You murmur, standing up and then pausing. "Uh."
"I'll show you." Tommy sighs. "This way. I think."
It feels like you've been doing nothing but following him around today, going where he guides you. Apparently, he guided you into kissing him and you followed.
Not only did you follow, but you didn't mind it.
Very few things in life were certain. The things that never changed were to be treasured, and you thought this one of them. You and Tommy never stopped competing and that was certain. Until tonight. Tonight, where everything was thrown out of balance.
No matter how short the time his lips were against yours, you kissed him long enough for you to come to exactly one realization. One devastating realization: you wanted to kiss him again.
"I'm sorry Wil made us kiss. He's fucking smart, that's why I was worried about him calling our bluff the most." Tommy doesn't look at you.
"He knows. That we aren't really dating."
"Of fucking course he does. So we kissed for fucking nothing?! This is the bathroom, by the way."
Instead of going in, you stop and face him.
"I want to change the deal." You had to take this risk.
"What? You can't fucking do that!" His eyes are blown wide, panicked. He probably thinks you're backing out.
"Instead of the trophy, I want you to answer a single question with complete honesty."
You were a smart person, one that valued knowledge. This answer was far more important than any award could ever hope to be.
"...okay?" He hesitantly accepts. "Right now?"
"Yeah. Why'd you describe me as the person you're dating? Because I know it's not just because I'm an annoying ass." You didn't know. This was a gamble, your biggest ever. Bigger than the time you decided not to study for a science exam.
"Why?" Tommy asks, stalling.
"A deal's a deal. We pinkie promised." You remind him, unmoving.
"You were the first person I thought of." You wait, knowing there's more. As if sensing his defeat, he deflates and adds, "Because you're the person I want to be dating. Nobody else fucking gets it! Nobody else is a fucking challenge! It's just you and your stupid witty comments about things. And I know it makes me sound like a fucking weirdo, but I didn't mean to. Not at first. This whole fake dating thing? I need you to know I didn't fucking plan it. I didn't plan to kiss you. Really, I planned to tell them we broke up in a week!"
The first thing that sinks in is that you were the dumbest person in the world for not realizing sooner. The second thing is that he didn't use the past tense. "Want" not "wanted."
“I fucked up, didn’t I?” He asks.
“I don’t know. I’m just really confused.”
“You’re confused?” Tommy parrots, seeming shocked.
“Yeah! That’s what happens when you fuck with people’s feelings, Tommy!”
He draws back at your anger, but only slightly. It wouldn’t be Tommy if he didn’t yell back at you.
“I didn’t mean for it to go so far!”
“What happened to ‘you don’t feel anything ever, and that's why I chose you,’ huh!?”
“I thought I could get away with this! And nobody would have to find out we aren’t actually dating, and that I have a stupid crush on you! The second one’s already fucked up, so if you want to fuck up the first one, then just do it.”
The only time you’ve ever seen him this emotional was when he lost a stupid nerf gun. A gun you found, because he looked like shit and you needed your rival at his best.
And because you cared about him more than you wanted to admit at the time.
“You know what? I think I will.”
With that, you press your lips to his. There’s nobody around, no reason to kiss him other than wanting to. It might be stupid, but you’re a firm believer that how you feel while kissing someone tells you if you should be together.
“Oh.” Tommy says dumbly once you pull back. “Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“FUCK YEAH!” He practically screams, making you slap a hand over his mouth.
“Shh!”
“No!” His voice is muffled behind your hand.
“This doesn’t change the fact I’m still smarter than you.”
“I think you mean that I’m smarter than you.”
"In your fucking dreams."
"Oh! Didn't mean to run into your... uh..." James blinks at you two.
"We were just talking." Tommy quickly says.
"Yup!" You agree. "Just talking. With my boyfriend. Outside the bathroom."
"You know, you're a weird fucking couple. I love it. I'm just gonna take the bathroom though."
James slips between you two, shutting the bathroom door.
"Holy shit." Tommy laughs. "We almost got caught!"
"There's not much to catch now, is there?" You ask.
"Huh. Guess not."
He grins, a dopey and idiotic thing. Either way, you smile back at him.
Who would've thought this was how the night turned out?

hiiii lilyyyy <3 ty for the ask
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?
ok so it depended on which teacher u asked ig? cus my language teachers adored me (😋 academic validation yes) but my p.t. teacher LITERALLY H A T E D me like from day 1 to day last she LOATHED me i have a suspicion why but forget that but my science teachers also loved me mainly cus i was good at science then 😭
15. favorite book you read as a school assignment?
okay well we never had to read books for assignments but we had library books that were switched weekly from 5th grade right? and i wud say my fav book that i read out of those was probably 'The Twins at St. Clare's' by Enid Blyton or the Secret Seven series. i love love loveddd these ones i would literally beg around asking for who had the next book in the series so that i could exchange my current book with them next week. another series i literally loved sm was the fairy chronicles by J. H. Sweet. like, r u kidding me? just look at the names of some of the books they SOUND so good
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and they are kind of spiderman-esque? like, i dont remember very clearly because i was literally 10 when i was reading these but i think it was smth like there is a secret fairy society and these girls are fairies but they can't tell their parents or any normal human but they have to save the world whenever there's smth wrong it was SOOO GOODDDD. anyway i'll stop ranting about them now 😭 (also one last thing, i loved the twins at st clare's sm that i actually googled if st clare's is a real school where i can convince my parents to let me go to BECAUSE IT SOUNDED SO AWESOMEEEE AAAA)
23. strange habits?
ok so out of the habits i do know that i have, some strange ones are:
i am one of those people who will crack(?) their bones sm it will either terrify you or piss you off. not kidding. i start with my back, the typical try to bend backwards with some kind of support halfway till your back, and then i twist my upper back all the way to the left and then to the right and it literally sounds like gunshots. (i think theres sm up with that, gonna go to the doc soon) next i crack all my knuckles etc etc etc i do it with my elbows and my knees too its sooo satisfying but it drives my dad crazy aksjks
i touch my nose a lot. this is smth i have noticed recently but i feel like whenever im having a convo with someone and dont know what to say i scratch the bridge of my nose or just touch it or smth and its SO SUSPICIOUS 😭 like i feel like the person's gonna think im hiding something or lying i promise im not suspicious im just nervous or smth 😭
i......sing. like, when you're saying smth but u realise that that sentence is a song lyric too and then why would u say it normally when u cud sing it like an i-deserve-a-grammy-person? yea. that. i do that a lot 😔 do u still think im cool
25. first song you remember hearing?
i donttttt knowww i guess it would be a lullaby or a nursery rhyme? i really dont remember any songs from my childhood 😭 like i guess i remember the theme of this one cartoon i used to watch which was called 'chhoti anandi' (its so cool i still sing it sometimes) but i think i was around 8-9 when i started watching it? pretty sure i listened to more songs at that time and before that too but ig thats one of them so 💪🏽

Keep Showing Up 🤍
Hey you guys. Just wanted to update you on what's happening in my academic and professional life lately. I got some bad news yesterday morning regarding an application for an internship for which I had high hopes. It's really frustrating and discouraging to get rejected without even getting a proper chance to prove yourself. We are all determined and motivated people who are fighting for the same spot, risking our mental health in the process just to be kicked out of the competition without a real reason... and all of this without assuring a payment for the position. If you've been in the same situation, you currently are or you're scared that you'll be, I hear you and I am with you.
What I'm writing to you right now is coming from the bottom of my heart while I am still unhopeful and truthfully, very disappointed... Keep showing up. I know it's hard, I know you don't see the reason why because you can already anticipate the result - it doesn't matter. Keep showing up. Show up to the library, to the lectures, to the gatherings, to yourself. Be present and keep trying. It is not going to be easy but that's what makes it worth it. I promise that if you stay consistent and strong You. Will. Get. There.
I love you. I believe in you. Keep showing up.

would you happen to have any recs for gender fuckery fic featuring lwj rather than wwx?
Not as much because I tend to prefer to toss the genderqueer experience at WWX, but I do have some lovely queer LWJ fic recs, be that as a trans, gender swap or just something undefinable.

Wei Wuxian doesn’t know how they got here sometimes.
Okay, like, yes, she knows how they got here (this village, this town, this forest, this city), and she knows how they got here (riding on a horrible donkey she’s decided she can’t bear to part with, Lan Zhan walking beside her leading said donkey by the reins, because of course Wei Wuxian’s donkey likes Lan Zhan more than her. She can’t blame Lil’ Apple! She also likes Lan Zhan more than she likes herself!), but it’s how she got here in the larger metaphysical sense that she doesn’t understand. There were thirteen years where she wasn’t here, after all, and very many places in the past year where she could have ended up not here again, but somehow she’s here, and—miracle of miracles—so is Lan Zhan.
Really, it’s the Lan Zhan part that she still struggles to understand.

Some people take him at his word, believing that they must have heard wrong about the child Jiang Fengmian had taken in all those years ago. They haven’t exactly heard wrong, but he isn’t lying either.
The first time Jiang-shushu had introduced him as the son of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, he had thought his face would split from the force of his smile. No one had argued with the sect leader, but Wei Wuxian is not a sect leader, and those of Gusu Lan do not seem to take kindly to any sort of correction. At least, if their esteemed teacher and acting sect leader is anything to go by.

The Naming of Small Things by BromeliadDreams
Lan Wangji has known all his life that he is destined for some book-lined office, for publication credits and funding awards, the grown-up versions of school prizes for academic achievement. The prospect has, for the most part, been comforting. But as the academic year wears on, he finds his work increasingly taking a backseat to Wen Qing's plans to unseat, or at least unsettle, their Head of Faculty, and Lan Wangji begins to look beyond the library walls. (Any influence from local chaos gremlin Wei Wuxian will not be acknowledged at this time, thank you very much.)
Or: maybe the real academic networking was all the groupchats we were added to along the way.
A Promise Lives Within You Now by ElvenQueens
When Lan Wangji left the cave of the Xuanwu of slaughter and returned to her sect, she knew that the world as she knew it had come to a breaking point, she just didn't know the changes it would entail. When she left the Xuanwu cave, she and Wei Ying were still girls, but in the face of war and the devastation and destruction it wrought, they had been forced to grow up faster than they should and take on roles earlier than they had planned. If there is one thing these lessons have taught her, it is that sometimes one needs to stop and offer a helping hand.

The Amber Hairpin by may10baby
Lan Zhan took a moment to unwrap the delicate paper patterned with clouds. Inside was a silver hairpin, an amber stone nestled in the end, limbs of silver delicately wrapped around it, etched in a floral design. It was beautiful and very expensive for a servant’s son. She looked up at Wei Ying in question, who blushed.
“When I wrote to my parents about jiejie, I mentioned how pretty jiejie’s eyes were, so my parents sent back the amber? Apparently, they were offered it as a gift for helping with a night hunt years ago and the uncle and auntie in the night market offered to make it into a hairpin if I spent the past few weeks helping out at the store and-”
Lan Zhan calmly slipped the hairpin into her hair, before grabbing Wei Ying by the arm and yanking him inside the Jingshi.

Rules are important, and you should listen to them, but somethings are more important still,” Madam Lan easily said, like it wasn’t blasphemy against the Wall of Discipline that her uncle had been careful to teach her. “I want you to be safe, A-Zhan, above everything else. Do you understand?”
She thought about it, forehead creasing, and eventually shook her head. “No.” she told her, and her mother didn’t scold her like some of her teachers did.
“That’s alright,” her mother softly said, “you can learn. Just you, A-Huan won’t need to understand this, and you can’t tell him, or anyone else.”
“Or I won’t be safe?” she asked, trying to figure out the path of logic.
Madam Lan smiled gently, “close. Sometimes, last measures need to be secret to work the best.”

The first step in their climb to power is to get the woman who killed Wen Ruohan from within his own palace well out of the way. Lan Zhan is not someone who schemes, but she cannot allow Wei Ying to meet such a fate.

Mild trauma trigger warnings with depression + probably more about me than you ever wanted to know.
I promise this might be the only super serious post I make. Maybe.
But I see a lot of stuff around and figured I wanted to write something on a more serious note, imagining that it might maybe slightly help even one person.
I'm not here to judge or shame anyone--quite the opposite really. Life is hard. We all cope in different ways. (And often develop traits or even kinks from our experiences--me included I have a lot of darker kinks even, and that's okay 💕)
I might not even post this tbh since some of it I've never told anyone but I'll keep things a bit vague.
*** Actual stuff 👇 ***
From a young age, I was cripplingly, embarrassingly shy.
Like can't talk on the phone, play with people on the playground, make friends shy.
I'm not really sure *why* but I just felt "different" and found it impossible to really connect with anyone.
This led to me being in my own head a lot and over analyzing everything.
As you might imagine I had no friends growing up. (Shocking I'm sure)
None. Zip. Zero. Nada.
My parents didn't understand me, my brother didn't understand me. I just felt completely alone.
Naturally, I read a lot.
Mostly fantasy books about other worlds, magic, adventures, friends, and romance.
Every novel I could find at the library. (I was also obsessed with Harry Potter fan fiction oops, don't @ me, no one irl knows this and that's how it's gonna stay)
I started to wonder a lot about "the meaning of life" and really didn't understand what the point was--everyone around me always seemed so much happier.
I desperately wanted to leave and go to any of these worlds that I read about. I thought if I died would I be reborn in a better, happier world. That's how I became suicidal at 14 - no external trauma, just a self-fulfilling prophecy of depression and loneliness.
I never tried to act on these thoughts or tell anyone. I would just spiral downwards whenever I was alone.
Now fast forwarding a few years, I went off to boarding school--for academic reasons not behavioral ones.
You'd think putting a lonely, depressed kid to live on his own would be a recipe for disaster. (Also my parents had no idea I was depressed since I never talked to anyone)
But actually it wasn't! The school had a lot of structure for forcing people to interact even for someone like me.
I made a few friends and started to see some happiness in life.
Around this time I started dating someone for the first time (all of my knowledge of relationships came from books and fanfictions mind you).
As you might expect, this person became my entire world.
There was a lot of drama of course--we were teenagers in boarding school what do you expect? We broke up, got back together, had a lot of sex in risky places, and made very many unreasonable promises.
We dated for two years before graduating.
We went to different universities far away and talked about making it work long distance.
A week after she moved away, she broke up with me by phone with no real warning.
I was devastated and was actively suicidal for the first time.
Three years went by - we talked on the phone every month or so (she would talk to me whenever she was lonely as a last resort and I would eat up the attention).
If you take anything away from my post (if anyone made it this far)--don't ever do this to yourself. Block them until you've gotten over the relationship!!! You deserve to be somebody's first choice.
I started to feel happy for the first time getting away from school during an internship. I didn't know anyone and I started learning how to be happy by myself and with myself. For the first time, I found myself living in the moment rather than imagining a better moment.
Second major takeaway I want to impress upon you dear reader--focus on baby steps to feel better rather than "visualizing yourself at the finish line". For basically my whole life, I had wanted to get better and not getting to this imagined "happy" led to constant downward spirals.
I have had a lot of ups and downs since then. But measuring my progress instead of focusing on how far away an imagined, moving finish line is has helped me immensely.
A lot of time, people treat happiness as a very concrete thing. You're either happy or you aren't. The things we read and experience create "checklists" of happiness for us. And mostly it just feels so far away -- there's always something "missing" or not perfect which sours everything.
I'm not perfect now--even today as a highly functioning adult I have (many) days where I want to just stay in bed. I have insecurities and oddities. And that's okay.
Life (and relationships) is about learning and growth. Trying to be a better person and finding small happinesses in small steps.
Finally, if you're struggling with depression or trauma try talking to someone you can trust--a therapist, partner, close friends, a help hotline, anyone. My biggest regret is silently struggling because it could have ended up with the worst ending.
You matter and have value 💕
[Sorry if this came off as kinda soap boxy. I know I'm writing from a position of immense privilege. I could also probably cut out some of the personal background, but I didn't want to. ily for reading this whole thing.]

riddle × overworked!prefect
pronouns: they/them
type: angst
warnings: the reader is literally having a mental breakdown bc of academic stuff (damn they just like me for real)
masterlist<3
Tumblr media
let's play a game, shall we? u just gotta answer the question with one of the possible answers below. easy enough, now let's see:
what do you think happens when you put an over-achieving, ex-gifted kid who needs academic validation in a world that they know something about? do they:
a) handle it rationally
b) give up
or c) overwork themselves to the point of neglecting their mental health in order to try and get good grades
if you guessed "c" then ding ding ding! congratulations! you were correct
you see, our beloved ramshackle prefect just so happened to be a gifted kid growing up. they grew up as the kid teachers wanted to have in their class. the kid who easily understood all the class material. the kid who never even got close to failing a test or an exam
they were an honors student in every way possible
which is why being transferred to a new world, completely different from theirs was less than ideal for them
a new world, new lessons, new teachers, new students, new everything. it was like a punch in the gut for them
they spent day in and day out with their nose in a school textbook, trying to understand the material, trying to be at the top of their class, trying to get that close-to-perfect grade on their paper
but it was impossible
you see, being in a new world really messes one up, everything they thought they knew was turned upside down
it was weird, and it sucked for them
but it's not all bad, you know, they made some friends here
like riddle rosehearts for example
with whom they got really close
who also happened to be very interested in their test results..
and just so happened to be dissatisfied with his friend's results..?
uh oh
"prefect I just believe that you could do better. I am aware of how clever you are, but I don't think you are trying enough for it to be shown"
two periods, they only needed around 5 seconds to leave one's mouth and reach the other's ears
but it was enough
oh trust me, it was enough
that was all the prefect needed for their self esteem to crumble. they felt like the earth had been lost from underneath their legs. the one thing they never wanted to hear was told to them , not only by someone they admired, but by a friend
and trust me, it was what broke the camel's back. it was all that was needed
now let's take a look at our prefect nowadays, shall we?
the prefect was in the library, in a more secluded part of it where almost no one went. there were textbooks and notebooks spread on the table in front if them, while others were laying on the floor and on some chairs next to them
in storms the housewarden of heartsylabyul, who was looking for his friend after they missed yet another unbirthday party
"prefect you are still here?" said riddle as he saw the hunched prefect. they didn't even look up at him when answering with a simple humm, a small way of saying "yeah"
"you should take a break. studying is very important, but you shouldn't overdo it" said riddle (you know, like a hypocrite, as if he hasn't been doing the same thing from the prime age of five)
"no no yeah, I just gotta finish this paper and then do a quick essay on mr trein's latest subject, I'll be done by curfew time, I promise"
"prefect, I really do think you should take a break"
"riddle it's fine" said the prefect and you could feel the annoyance starting to appear
"prefect" he replied coldly, it was more like a warning to be honest. they didn't reply, leaving him with only one option, take their books
"hey! what are you doing? give it back!" said the prefect, finally looking up to him. he could see the redness in their eyes and the dark circles under them, both signs of their sleepless nights, and they had more acne on their face, a zign of their anxiety
"prefect you need to take a break"
"no! give it back"
"I'm sorry prefect but it is better for you"
"give it back!" they yelled, slamming the table with the hand that was once peacefully rating on it, as the first tear started to roll down their cheek
"prefect..?" asked riddle in a low voice, slowly getting the book closer to its owner, who was now full on crying
"please give it back" they said quietly, taking shaky and loud breaths. "please"
the desperation in their voice was almost enough to let the so called "red rose tyrant" give the book to them, but he didnt
"prefect are you okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concerned as he slowly brought out his hand to put it on the prefect's shoulder. trey did that to him whenever he was crying, it brought him comfort. the prefect though, flinched, making him retreat
"I need the books" they started saying, rubbing their nose with one of their sleeves. "this is due to tomorrow, I still have ten more assignments to do and I can't understand what the fuck we do in crewel's class!" they said quickly, voice speeding up from how much they wanted to say
"and I don't understand even half of it! what are all these plants? we dont have all this back home!" they said, throwing their head back as they were speaking
"and, and it's my fault for not saying that I can't understand the material, but I'm scared!" they said. they were very lucky that the library was almost empty at this hour
"scared?" repeated riddle. "scared! I'll disappoint all the teachers! I'm supposed to be smart, I'm supposed to understand stuff like this very easily" they said, slapping their thigh while doing so, a bad habit of theirs that they had when they were very anxious
"and they all think I'm stupid!" they said, more tears falling down their face. this saying left riddle shocked. why would they think that? they were almost a genius from his prespective
"no you're not" he said. if you couldn't tell comforting isn't really his thing. "yeas I am. I get stuck in the simplest of exercises, I can't understand what I'm reading and I'm struggling to get even the most basic things!" they said
seeing his friend be so anxious was very sad for riddle, but seeing them cry so hard that they could barely breath because of something as simple as two or three numbers on a paper was what broke his heart
and the worst part?
he couldn't do anything to help them
they were drowning right in front of him, and he couldn't save them
the only thing he coukd do is watch them as they were crying and rambling about their stressful deadlines
Tumblr media
idk might do a part two if I need comfort or if my next mental breakdown is soon enough

"We can't do this on our own."
original fiction (continuation of this prompt)
word count: 575
Josie adjusted the buttons on her funky-patterned shirt. It might not have been the most professional, but given the nature of the person she was meeting, she figured he wouldn’t mind much.
She hadn’t spent much time on the campus of Trinity University since she graduated. She had once gone with Rhiannon, on the promise that they’d grab dinner after she went to the library. Josie had gotten lost in the archives and wandered until Rhiannon went looking for her.
Now, she waited for her friend outside of Griffith Hall, where Dr. Volkov had agreed to meet them in his office. She tapped her foot as she held a cup of coffee from the campus cafe. Josie knew she didn’t need the extra caffeine making her jittery. But hey, at least it occupied her as she stood there.
Through the sea of undergrads who were slogging through their afternoon classes, she spotted Rhiannon hustling her way over. She clutched her folder of evidence close to her chest as she weaved between students.
“Oh, thank God, you’re here already,” she said as she joined her, short of breath.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t miss it.” Josie looked up at the building. “Though I don’t know why we really have to make things… academic.”
“We can’t do this on our own,” Rhiannon said. “If you want people to take us seriously, we need the word of a professional.”
“And you think a philosophy professor will help people take us seriously?”
“Well, and I need to focus on my thesis or Dr. Druthers is going to kick me from the program,” she muttered.
“Fine. Dr. Volkov it is,” Josie said.
Josie had only had a few gen-ed classes in Griffith Hall during her time as a student, but she knew it was hell to walk through. By the time they reached the third floor where his office was, she had joined Rhiannon in being out of breath. Thankfully, his office wasn’t too much farther in.
She’d taken Dr. Volkov’s class for a philosophy requirement, so she’d met him briefly before. When he opened the door to his office, she knew he hadn’t changed much - a sweater that looked a thread away from unravelling, messy gray hair, big glasses. He looked like a stereotypical professor if she ignored the wild eyes behind those big coke-bottle classes.
He grinned at them. “Ms. Penn! And you must be Ms. McGee. Come in, come in.”
As Rhiannon and Josie followed him inside, she was surprised he’d remembered her name after all these years. She supposed she had been a very attentive student in his class. Too bad she’d gone with art history instead. Neither degree were super helpful in the real world.
His office was what some would call cozy. Others would call it a cramped mess. But Josie felt at ease settling into one of the chairs in front of his desk.
Dr. Volkov sat in his cushy office chair. “Now, Ms. McGee, you said that Dr. Druthers sent you here with a… cryptozoological matter?”
Rhiannon sat up, hands folded in her lap. “Yes. I did.” She took her file and set it on his desk. “Proof that Josie Penn-” She laid a hand on her shoulder- “is a real life lycanthrope.”
He looked at her. “And is this a recent development?”
Josie nodded.
Dr. Volkov smiled. “Well, I feel like this needs some tea.” He pushed himself back up. “Or something stronger.”

the law of attraction: de minimis
a quackity x reader law school au
part one, chapter two
[PREV] | [NEXT]
.
“Now turn to your left and say hi to your partner, the person your significant other will hate, after you blow them off on Valentines day to do voir dire.”
Alex chuckles, the sound drawing your gaze right over to him. You sigh dramatically, but can’t help yourself from letting a fond smile take over your features.
“Figure it’s time to introduce myself,” Alex quips, holding out a hand invitingly. “Alex.”
“Yeah,” you say, as you take his hand and shake it. He is warm, and your hand fits perfectly in his. “I picked up on that.”
“You will each work in teams of two within larger groups. I will assign you into a group. Each group will have a defense and a prosecution. You do not get to choose which side you represent. You do not get to choose your client. You do not get to choose the crime.” The professor rakes his eyes across the room of students. They all, including you, are silent and sitting attentively. “The only thing you get to choose is how well you represent your client, whether your client be the accused, or the state.”
Beside you, Alex lets out a low sigh, almost a whistle. His knee is bouncing, the black fabric of his track pants bunching up around his knee with the movement. You want to reach out and straighten it, fix the three white stripes running parallel down the side.
“You may know this: the university is granted a courtroom at the William Kunstler Courthouse for academic use. When you leave this room in a few moments, you’ll find informative packets on my desk.” The silver-haired man grabs a heavy stack of papers, and spreads them out on his desk like a dealer spreading a stack of cards. “Take one. It contains all the information you need to win your case, and pass this class.”
Your breath catches in your throat- you had a feeling this was coming.
“If you lose your case,” your professor says. “You will receive a maximum of a B+ in my class. If you win, you are guaranteed an A.”
The static sound of unsettled murmuring steadily rises in the echoey lecture room. You glance over at Alex, who is leaning back in his chair, legs crossed casually. He’s fiddling with one of the hoodie strings that hangs from his collar.
“This mock trial will work as any other real case. Your jury consists of freshmen students in a jury studies elective. They have no knowledge about this case, and you should treat them not as students, but as ordinary citizens when you go through voir dire.”
Alex huffs a laugh again, a little noise that is quickly becoming very familiar to you. “Explains why he went over voir dire for three hours last week.”
Despite the anxiety thrumming through your veins, you nod in accordance. Your fingers thread and twist through each other, the poor ring on your index finger falling victim to your fiddling. You pull it off your finger and twirl it around in your lap, the metal warmed from your body heat even if you feel more frigid than not.
“A real judge will be presiding over your case. Kissing up to them by bringing them a gift basket and ‘thanking them for their time’ is not frowned upon, but it is not effective. They are the only truly impartial ones in that courtroom, most of the time.”
With every word out of your professor’s mouth, you feel your exhaustion growing.
Isn’t this what you want to do? Isn’t this what… everyone here wants to do, for the rest of their lives?
You look to Alex. He’s looking at the professor with bright enough eyes, but the bags underneath them tell a different story, the skin taking on a bluish tint. His relaxed posture, his crossed arms with his fingers tucked into his own sides, the confident yet also unreadable expression he tends to wear still constant as ever. He looks like he knows something you don’t, and that should scare you.
You slide the ring back onto your finger and fold your hands atop your desk.
“The only difference from a real trial is that you have more prep time, and that you have your partner to help you with your side of the case. Both of you will be present in court, choosing jurors, delivering opening arguments, questioning witnesses, presenting evidence and arguments, and, yes, delivering your closing statements. You better get comfortable with your partner. Your futures rest in each other’s hands.”
You think you feel a headache coming on. You’re about to put your entire future, the fate of your entire career, in the warm hands of someone who is, at this point, just this side of total stranger. That should scare you.
“Everyone take a packet on your way out. I suggest you get coffee or a meal with your partner in the time you would spend in this class on an ordinary day. Information about Wednesday’s class is in the packet. We are meeting at the courthouse.” The professor spreads his arms wide, an enthusiastic grin suddenly spreading over his face, looking as out of place as a daisy on a sidewalk full of snow. “Welcome to real criminal procedure. Class is dismissed.”
.
“Here, before I go.” Alex’s voice pulls you out of your stupor with a gentle hand on your upper arm. You think you can feel the warmth seeping into your chilled skin through the thick fabric of your coat. You look down at where his hand rests on you, his skin a beautiful contrast to the dark red of your coat. Then, you notice his other hand- holding out a post-it note. “My number. I’m really sorry, I have to go- I have a thing to do for a friend- but, are you free this afternoon for lunch, maybe? We can get to know each other a bit before we start spending hours together each day.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” you force out, the teasing normally coming naturally, but today it feels like speaking around a rock in your throat. “Um- you have to go?”
“Yeah, sorry, it’s a- work thing.”
“I thought you said it was for a friend?”
“It is- look, it’s complicated, I’m sorry. I promise, you can have me as soon as I’m done, I’ll call the minute we’re done.” His furrowed brows stab at your resolve, the questioning facade you put up disappearing like a melted snowflake.
Taking the post-it from his outstretched hand, you carefully fold it into quarters and slip it into the pocket of your slacks. Before you do, you catch a glimpse of a little :] scrawled at the end of the string of numbers.
“What makes you think I want you?” you quip back after a moment.
His face falls for a moment, before he gets the joke and his brown eyes spark back up with the intensity of a firework. An unapologetic laugh bubbles up from his chest, an addicting sound that you feel echoing in your own chest, as well throughout as the high-ceilinged lecture hall.
“I’ll grab you a packet,” you say, nodding your chin at the table at the front of the room that has assembled a bit of a crowd around it. “Go, get your thing done.”
“You- thank you!” Alex grins, his hand on your arm squeezing in some sort of a thank-you before he leaps to his feet and grabs his binder. “I’ll see you soon- promise.”
“Promise,” you nod seriously, holding up your pinky.
You don’t expect him to turn on his heel and link his own finger with yours, pulling your hand tight against his for a moment before nodding with an enthusiasm entirely inappropriate for the situation. Then, he is actually gone, with his green jacket slung over an arm and the papers in his binder fluttering as he whisks out the door.
You notice that the frost in the windows had cleared when you see him jog across the street. He crosses just in time for a gust of wind to threaten to tear off his beanie- he slaps a hand down on top of his head, unruly black strands curling around the edges of the hat as he disappears around a crowded street-corner.
.
You sit yourself down in the library with a pen, a highlighter, and a steaming cup of coffee from the campus coffee shop. For midmorning on a Monday, the library is packed. Most of the students are windblown and dusted with snowflakes, their jackets pulled tightly around their shoulders as they seek out shelter from the horrible weather to chat with friends, classmates, and partners.
One of the only open tables rests right in the corner, sandwiched between two wide windows. You find why it’s empty very quickly, the thin glass doesn’t do much to stop the icy air from leaking in. Regardless, you shoulder your messenger bag onto an empty chair before setting yourself up in the chair farthest from the window. The packets you’d grabbed from your professor had taken a bit of a beating in the trek here, both dotted with little spots of water from stray, melting snowflakes.
Wincing as you smooth the packets out with your hand, you carefully wipe away an ink smudge that one particularly big snowflake had created. The words “de minimis” are smudged out, at least you think that’s what had been there, considering the following sentence.
A court of law is focused on the smallest things. Arguments are described as de minimis, as in, having their foundation built upon the smallest of things. One partial fingerprint is enough to seal someone’s sentence. One word misspoken is enough to cause a mistrial. One sentence too far is enough to get yourself held in contempt. The smallest things seal fates and shape lives, in law as in life.
You take your pen and carefully scrawl in de minimis onto the dampened paper.

No Judgement ~ JJK [Request]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WORD COUNT: 1.9K
PAIRING: Badboy!Jungkook x Reader
GENRE: College AU, Bad boy goes for the good girl, established relationship, angst, fluffy ending, small argument,
Tumblr media
It was a cliche played to high heavens. The bad guy and the good girl of the college meant to be together but it was real. What you and Jungkook had together? It was real and there was nothing cliche going on between you. The love you shared with one another was real and that was all either of you cared about.
There had been a time when you thought you would never go for someone like Jungkook. Someone who was so rough and had huge anger issues but you couldn't help who you fall for. Not that anyone would blame you, Jungkook was a bad guy sure but he was also one of the most handsome guys in college.
"Hey!" You glanced up to see one of the girls in your class staring at you from across the library, you smiled weakly at her.
"Do you have a rubber?" You nodded reaching into your bag and throwing it in her direction. It was getting close to the end of the academic year and you were spending most of your time in the library while Jungkook...Well, Jungkook spent most of his time getting into trouble.
Not as much as he used to though he'd calmed down an awful lot since he'd been with you. Choosing to knuckle down on his grades rather than other people around him which you were happy about. It wasn't nice waiting up at night for your boyfriend to come home, wondering if he was beaten up or being held in the college prison.
That made it sound worse than it was, the college "prison" was just the security office with a cell inside. There to keep people safe if they were too drunk on a night out or to hold them there until they had cooled down. You'd picked Jungkook up from there one too many times for your liking when you first began dating. But lately, you hardly heard of him getting into trouble or fights, mostly because he spent all of his time with you or in class.
Where are you? x You text him staring down at the message was delivered but never seen. Today was supposed to be a day of studying inside of the college library, it was one of the last days it was going to be open and you needed the textbooks. Jungkook needed them more so than you which was why you had been waiting all morning for him.
"If you're waiting for Kookie you'll be waiting a while," A male voice spat out, venom seeping from his tone as you stared up. The way he had said Jungkook's nickname made your stomach churn, he said it in a mocking way as if he knew all your secrets. Which he almost did, he knew everything that happened between you and your boyfriend since he was Jungkook's ex's best friend. Standing there with a bust lip and black eye as he stared down at you, you had no doubt Jungkook had done that to him. Giving you the dirtiest look he could manger to muster up. Karl was always going too far whenever he tried to wind Jungkook up, all it would take was one insult about you and Jungkook would lose his cool. That was the whole reason JUngkook had stopped being his friend in the first place, wanting to keep you protected from Karl and his friends.
"Last I saw him he was laying in the parking lot road," Karl laughed as he stared at you, shaking his head as he pulled out a chair and sat in front of you. Arms leaning on the table in front of you as he stared down at all of the notes you had laid out for Jungkook.
"You know you're doing the right thing...Holding out on him." He licked his lips as he looked you up and down, a shiver running up and down your spine. You felt sick with the way that he stared at you as if you knew what he was about to say next.
"That sweet, tight little pussy and then he'll leave. That's what he always did with everyone," He glanced around the room, pointing out all of the girls Jungkook had dated and slept with. Of course, you knew who Jungkook had slept with before, you'd been through it with him many times.
"Just ask Soya," Karl smirked putting his fingers into his mouth and whistling loudly to get the attention of a shy girl in the back of the room. Her head shot up so fast it looked as though it was going to fall off and she stared at you, a terrifying look filled her eyes as she realised who was sitting with you.
"Did you sleep with Jungkook and then he left?" She said nothing but shake her head over and over again, looking back down at her books and wishing to be invisible again.
"See..." Karl was beginning to get irritated seeing you just sit there, clearly not bothered by anything that he was saying. So he slammed his hands onto the table and got really close to your face. You could smell the sweat dripping from his forehead as you stared back at him.
"You're nothing more than a bet to Jungkook, that was the only reason he started seeing you. You're nothing." Ignoring him until he moved away from your face you began to pack everything up. If Jungkook was really laid in the parking lot you wanted to go and find him, make sure that he was okay. As much as Jungkook could hold out for himself, Karl was a good fighter too.
"Look at that, you know I'm right." The smugness could be heard from a mile away but you weren't going to let him get to you. If he knew that he was getting under your skin he would keep going and going until you snapped.
"That's right, go running back to your bed and your little blanket! See if that can save you." You froze in place, the blanket you had on your dorm bed was something only Jungkook knew about. Something you had only recently told him about and you stared at Karl.
"Oh? Struck a nerve? Maybe Jungkook told me when we went to have breakfast this morning when he told me all about how you and he were going to do it this weekend." Your blood was beginning to boil as you listened to everything Karl was saying. It was all true, you and Jungkook had planned to go to a hotel for the weekend to sleep together.
"Look at you, I warned you that he would use you." You ignored him, picking up your bag and books and carrying them with you toward the exit when the door was held shut. Karls arm above your head as he looked down at you, his free hand reaching up to stroke your cheek.
"Dump him and come to me, I promise we will have a lot more fun." He smirked down at you, leaning closer to you so you slapped him across the face. Palm stinging as you felt your stomach lurches realising what you had just done. Karl stared down at you with an angry look in his eyes but you just slipped out through the door as he held his face. Racing down the halls to get away from him as quick as you could.
Tumblr media
Jungkook sat on your bed waiting for you to come back, holding an icepack against his cheek as he nursed himself back to health. Wondering where you were and what you could have been doing. He'd lost his phone in the middle of the fight with Karl and he had no other way of calling you to find out where you were.
"Babe?" He called out hearing the door to your dorms open and slam shut, he frowned. You never came home this angry, even when Jungkook would piss you off in an argument.
"What do you want? Come to laugh in my face?!" You snapped making Jungkook stand up and stare at you,
"Don't look so confused, Karl told me everything...That I was just some bet, that once you slept with me you would leave?" You laughed sarcastically as you shook your head. Staring around at all of the gifts Jungkook had given to you over the last year of your relationship. Everything was all a lie, everything he had ever said or done was all a lie. A part of some large joke about you.
"Babe you can't believe a word he says, you know what he's like." You scoffed at the statement, throwing some of his clothes into a bag. Not wanting him to be there anymore, you needed him away from you.
"He told me about your little breakfast, about how you told him all about this weekend. That you were going to sleep with me and leave." Jungkook frowned as he stared at you. His phone.
"Baby no, it's not like that. We had a fight and he must have swiped my phone," Jungkook panicked taking your hand in his to stop you from packing his clothes.
"Oh! So he happened to steal your phone and know your passcode?" You mumbled staring up at him. Your heart sinking the moment you saw him, he was in a worse state than Karl had been. His eye was black and swollen, lip busted in two places and a large graze on his cheek. Everything inside of you lunged toward him but your body stayed still, not wanting to give in to him.
"I would never do something like this to you, you know that...Even if right now you don't..." You stared at him, your hand slowly reaching to touch his cheek as he hissed and moved away from you.
"I'll cancel the weekend, I'll prove to you that nothing he said is true," He promised as he took your wrists into his hands and stared down into your eyes. There was one thing you knew about Jungkook and that was when he would lie he could never make direct eye contact with you. Ever.
"I would never do something like that," He whispered as he smiled weakly at you, moving one of his hands to your cheek and holding it softly.
"I believe you," You whispered looking back at him, realising why Karl would do all of this just to spite you and Jungkook. You'd taken away his best friend and he was hurt by it.
"Now...Can you help me?" Jungkook whined as he sat down on your bed again. The whole reason he had come to your room instead of a nurse was that he liked you looking after him more than someone else. Jungkook always came to you for help with everything he would need because he knew with you there was no judgement, you would just help him. No questions asked.
"Okay, I'll run you a bath and then I'll come and clean you up." You whispered leaning down to kiss your boyfriend on the cheek, being careful not to hurt him as he grimaced a little.
"Then we're studying Mister," You ordered before leaving him in the bedroom, a giant smile on his face as he watched you leave the room. No matter what happened in his life he was going to make sure that you were the constant in it. That you were always going to be there with him for as long as he could keep you around.

How to make essay writing fun! (I promise it’s possible)
Just to clarify, this is in no way teaching you how to write GOOD essays, just how to enjoy the process. My essays are probably quite mediocre but when i follow these tips I find them fun.
Furthermore, my subject (languages and cultures) is a real mix of history, literature, art history and other essays so obviously this won’t work for all.
The question/topic
when you’re first presented with the question, take a step back and think of which themes it’s asking you to ponder, then think which of those themes interests you the most, and choose those to focus on.
Example:
‘The urban crowd can appear as both a threat and a refuge.’ Discuss. (Essay question from my Russian culture intro paper)
This question is asking us to look at urban spaces in Russia and the USSR. I know that in lectures we discussed a variety of media related to cities, and therefore I can select whatever interests me that’s relevant to the topic.
For this example, I’d probably choose to discuss the St. Petersburg tales by Gogol as an example of the Urban space as a threat, and contrast this with the film Chelovek S Kino-apparatom (Dziga Vertov)as an example of liberation and refuge in urban spaces.
Reading
I won’t lie, I’m not usually the kind of person who starts their readings early, but I promise you it can be fun.
Go to the supplementary reading list (if you have one) pick 2-3 books that interest, go to the library to pick them up (i find it best to have them in print) then look around, see if you find anything else relevant that interests you.
Then, as you read, log key quotes on some sort of online document along with the name of the book (it’s helpful if you include it in citation format too). This makes it way easier to transfer the information to your essays, and also helps when revising for exams.
Here’s an example of my reading notes from the first few weeks of this year. Remember your page numbers!!
Tumblr media
Brainstorm/Plan
This is the fun part. Think of arguments, think of how you’d criticise the arguments of your sources, think of how you’d come up with something completely new. Be as critical, as imaginative and as absurd as possible, and make sure you either have textual/source-based evidence to back it up, or an academic reading which supports your view.
For example, I like to go searching for parallels to other stories when I read literature. Especially in older texts, a lot of narratives may mimic biblical stories or classical myths, if you have a basic grasp of the plot of these myths and stories, it’s fun to search for parallels in your texts!
Finally, writing!
Personally, I like to have a skeleton plan of points I plan on covering, then just dig in and get started on the essay.
As I write, my arguments develop and sometimes new ideas come to me. That’s okay. You don’t have to stick to the plan, and if you start finding your plan tedious and restrictive, you’re not going to enjoy it.
tldr: take the content, pick the parts that interest you, pick books that seem fun to read and skim read them for relevant, pertinent and interesting sections. Then get started, write it in as little sessions as possible so it flows like a cohesive stream of thought. Then edit until you’re happy, and send it off :)
I’m not going to lie and say I ALWAYS love writing essays, sometimes it’s really a chore and I just have to knuckle down and get it done. But when I have the time to fully do the reading, fully research the things that interest me and write it all together, I find I really enjoy writing :)

We played dangerously (1/?)
Because we need more stories that show us just how much of a dirty boi Timbo is. The more smtty #TimRae the better. So excited for this story and delve heavily into their drama and dirty deeds. Strap yourselves in, bbs. it's a steamy one.
The history between them ran deep and long, mostly unspoken, messy, and painfully raw. Years later, here they are - older and carrying just a little bit more baggage than necessary. Tim and Raven reflect on their dangerous history and sift through the extra baggage they acquired.
~~~~
“You’re quitting?”
Raven frowned and crossed her arms defensively. She steeled herself as Red Robin stared at her, a look of total disbelief on his face as he processed what she just told him. She ignored how a heavy feeling settled low in her stomach.
“I’m taking a sabbatical,” she said levelly.
“For an undefined period of time,” continued Tim, his voice strained as he drew his eyebrows together trying to process what he just heard five minutes ago. “That sounds like quitting to me,”
She pressed her lips together as she tried to ignore the harsh press of Tim’s emotions against her. She watched him stare at her from across the briefing room, the sound of their computer working on data broke the heavy silence between them. “It’s my life, of course it’s indefinite,”
Tim blinked and followed her stance, crossing his arms as he studied her intently. “I’m not trying to take control of your life, Raven,” he bristled.
Raven tilted her head in challenge. For whatever reason she felt annoyance crawl under her skin. “It sounds like you are,”
“I’m not,” Tim pressed, sighing loudly. With a huff he pulled off his mask and threw it on the briefing table. Raven watched it slide on the flat surface before looking back up at Tim’s confused blue eyes. “Look, I don’t want to fight. You can do whatever you want, Raven. You’re right, it’s your life. I’m sorry if I sounded controlling,”
Raven hummed in acknowledgement. She knew he meant well. She knew Tim well enough that he wanted to understand the situation at hand. She shifted under his gaze and ignored how her stomach gnawed painfully. “When are you leaving?” Tim asked, his tone softer as he slid into the seat across from her. Raven watched him grab his mask and fiddle with it absently. The atmosphere shifted and her stomach churned painfully.
“In two weeks,” Raven replied and sat down in front of him. She watched Tim press his lips together and frown at the news. “I got into a special program. School starts early in August,”
Tim swallowed and threw her a torn look. “I’m glad you’re going off to university,” he began. He paused to inhale as he tried to think. “And this is not something you could do, like part-time online or something?”
Raven frowned at the way he tried to find ways to make her stay. “No,” she said. “Our work is a tight schedule as it is,”
Tim nodded in agreement. He gave a halfhearted smile. “At least I tried,”
Her stomach lurched without her consent and she ignored the jumble of emotions in the room. Her decision was final. This conversation made the move incredibly real. Pain settled low in her stomach. She needed to pack and get things going. “I want a life outside of the Titans, Tim,” she said. “Most of you have lives outside of the Tower. Gar does his stupid acting. Jaime has his family and volunteer work. You run WE, Tim. You all get to do something outside of our uniform. I just want something as close to normal as I can get, whatever that is for Rachel Roth, even if it’s just for a while.”
Tim sighed. The tension was palpable as Tim frowned. His brows furrowed and he nodded. “Yeah, I respect that, Rae,” he said, voice low. Running his hand through his hair, Tim leaned back into his chair with a huff. “Yeah, okay. Yeah,” he breathed and looked deep in thought. She felt the faint press of his carefully controlled emotions. “We’ll make some preparations for your transition and make sure that everything is in order. I’ll let the Justice League know,”
There was a beat of silence between them. Raven was surprised how methodological the conversation was. Then again, was she really expecting an argument for her to stay? There was an inexplicable pin-like pain in her chest she could not shake off. Wasn’t this what she wanted? Sighing softly, she assumed their conversation was done and stood up. Tim probably had to file a report to the JL. She had to pack up and get going with her life – they all did. Raven swallowed a thought.
“Well, thanks,” she said and turned to leave the room. She heard Tim stand up.
“Hey,” Tim called, voice slightly strained. Raven paused and turned back around, eyeing him curiously. Tim swallowed and his brows pressed together and there was a cautious look on his face. “This is not about –”
“No,” Raven cut him off sharply. “It’s not.”
Tim sighed and his shoulders lowered slightly. He caught her blue eyes and Raven watched an expression she cannot quite place cross his face. He offered her a tentative smile and nodded, his brows still furrowed and still looking torn. “Okay,” he breathed. “Yeah, good.” He paused before continuing. “We’ll tell the team after dinner tonight.”
Raven nodded. Her stomach felt heavy, she had enough of this conversation. It was done. “I’m going to start packing up stuff,” she said and made her way towards the door.
“Everyone’s going to miss you, Raven,” Tim said as she opened the door.
She paused at the door, hand resting at the metal doorframe. Her finger tapped the frame thoughtfully as a few stray thoughts ran through her mind, before turning to look over her shoulder, catching Tim’s piercing blue eyes. She sent him a tight smile and buried whatever errant emotions tickled her heart. “Yeah, I’ll miss everyone too. I’ll be back soon, I promise.”
She did not come back anytime soon.
~~
Tim forgot when he was last in the Gotham Public Library – perhaps back when he was still in high school, 11 years ago? He wasn’t all too sure. His high school memories were blurry, given how his vigilante life was far more exciting than high school calculus.
But he was sure that the Gotham Public Library did not look this modern or dazzling since he last stepped into it when he was 15. The large library atrium was cleared out from its usual chairs and tables and instead filled with cocktail tables, round tables with sparkling black and gold table settings, buffet tables lined the walls, upbeat jazz music and heavy conversations filled the usual quiet halls, and every single one of the Gotham’s elite was dressed to the nines.
It was a charity dinner with plates going for the thousands. There was a silent auction too, some collectors’ books were up for grabs. The library was launching a new exhibit with some new codex they found out of Gotham. Wayne Foundation was funding most of the research and restoration work that went with it, and tonight’s event was supposed to help cover costs for the library’s expansion projects.
He idly listened to some politicians talk to Bruce and his siblings, Damian and Cass. Jason had moseyed off somewhere (likely browsing through the bookshelves or bidding on some of the collectibles in the silent auction) – lucky for the asshole. Tim wasn’t really paying attention. There was a lot going on, Tim barely kept up if he was being honest. A business merger was keeping his mind preoccupied, he was flying out to Japan tomorrow morning, and tonight’s dinner was the last place he honestly wanted to be at – but press as CEO of WE was important, Bruce liked to constantly remind him.
“So I was saying to him, ‘Johnny, son, if you don’t pull your pants up, that’s gonna be a lawsuit waiting to happen,’,” said the old man, assistant city treasurer – or whatever – to their small group. The old man heartily laughed, wheezing into his champagne glass. Bruce looked like he just swallowed bad caviar and cleared his throat while Damian and Cass made no effort to hide their bewildered faces. Tim sighed.
“Well, it does sound like a lawsuit waiting to happen, Mr. Peters,” Tim absently fiddled with his scotch glass and wondered if he should get anything stronger to get him through the night.
The man made a wounded sound and said something before slinking off. Bruce and Tim shared an exasperated look. Damian clicked his tongue, absently tapping his glass of orange juice. “This party is terrible, father,” he sniffed and icily scanned the crowd. “May we leave early?”
Bruce eyed his teenage son blandly. “We came here together, we leave together,” he said.
“Tt,” Damian frowned and took a sip from his orange juice.
Tim glanced at Damian, mildly feeling sorry for the 16-year-old gremlin. He remembered how he felt over these galas when he was younger. Internally grimacing at the galas when he first became CEO back when he was 17, Tim hid his displeasure behind his scotch glass while taking a sip.
They milled around more, talking to investors and guests from Gotham’s elite and academe. Tim smiled politely and held conversations where necessary, idly wondering when the night would be over. The crowd soon gathered in the middle of the atrium at the soft chime of a bell, signaling the start of another round of speeches from the library. Tim and his siblings slowly followed Bruce and the rest of the crowd towards the atrium. Tim caught Damian and Cass sharing bored glances.
“We’d like to thank everyone for being with us tonight,” said the Gotham Public Library Head Librarian, a well-dressed elderly man. The man went on with library expansion updates and the latest figures on tonight funds that were raised. Tim barely listed as he checked his phone for his flight details Tam sent him earlier. Ignoring the polite applause that filled the room, Tim continued to discreetly scroll through his itinerary.
“Tonight we’re also delighted to announce the opening of our exhibit, the Life Codex: Ancient Celebrations of Life. The library is honored to house this latest discovery and carry out the research, restoration, and preservation work of these recent discoveries,” the librarian droned on about ancient documents and the restoration work involved. Tim felt Cass nudge him and he blinked, looking up from his briefer. He stared at her quizzically.
“Attention,” she whispered. Tim offered her a sheepish look and pocketed his phone. They both turned their attention back to the stage. He caught sight of Jason’s large built shuffle in next to them, looking utterly bored. Since Jason was ‘legally alive’ again, they had roped him into attending a few events once in a while – much to the older man’s displeasure.
Mr. Tompkins, the Head Librarian, went on to discuss the project details that had gone underway since last month. Documents from Africa had been flown in and the research team had been working on restoring paper and decoding the codex. Tim barely listened as the elderly man droned on and silently wondered if he could still catch some sleep before his flight in the morning. His phone vibrated and he pointedly ignored Cass' look as he pulled out his phone to check an update from Tam.
"Doctor Collins, Dean of Gotham University's history and anthropology department is leading this project and she has built an excellent team for this project. Doctor Collins?" The head librarian welcomed an elderly woman with salt and pepper hair up on stage. Tim drowned out the speech as Dr. Collins started talking about the project, briefly looking at his phone and going through the project document for tomorrow's meeting with the Japanese tech firm. Tim wondered if he could at least get some good sushi while in Tokyo. Perhaps he could ask Tam to squeeze that into his schedule, they could --
"Hey, isn't that…" Jason paused and squinted at the stage. "Huh."
"Tim, look,"
Tim closed his phone and glanced at Cass curiously before turning his attention to the stage. Tim stopped short at what he saw.
Dressed in a flowing halter gown with a modest v-neck and a teasingly stylish slit up her right leg, a strikingly familiar woman walked up on the small platform offering the crowd a tentative smile and a modest wave. Tim watched the small woman carefully shuffle across the platform as a few more members of the research team were introduced. He blinked and stared at the violet-black haired woman and felt his throat tighten.
As if sensing his stare, dark blue eyes caught his light blue ones from across the hall. They zeroed in on him, easily catching him in a sea of hundreds.
There was an inexplicable tightness that seized his chest briefly, as Tim stared back at the woman, watching transfixed as emotions flickered across her face before quickly slipping back into a small pleasant smile and keeping her gaze briefly at him before turning to her colleagues and chuckling at something they were whispering to each other on stage. Tim watched and stared at her, schooling the surprise on his face, and just drinking in every familiar slopes and planes of her face because it had been what? Five? Six? Years since he last saw her.
"That's -"
"Rachel," Tim cut off Cass, blinking away his brief surprise and instead stared intently at his (former?) teammate.
"Rachel Roth leads our research team. Is there anything you'd like to say, dear?" Dr. Collins asked, turning to the group on stage. Rachel looked surprised before shaking her head and waving her hand in decline. "Ms. Roth does excellent work in ancient runes and languages, and restoration work. It's a pleasure to have her on the team. She's a guest lecturer at Gotham U, so if you're lucky, you best sign up for her special lecture series on ancient runes."
Tim watched as Rachel blushed at the praise, ducking her head briefly before chuckling at something a blonde haired woman next to her said. The group on stage shared a laugh and Tim watched curiously at the familiar sight of Raven smiling. There were few more pleasantries on stage before the group had their photo taken
“If we could invite Mr. Bruce Wayne, Mr. Lucius Fox, and Mr. Tim Wayne, to come up on stage for a quick photo with the rest of the team? After which we can proceed with our evening, and hopefully get your support in our library’s expansion work,” the head librarian called.
Tim blinked as Cass nudged him and pulled him out of his thoughts. Clearing his throat, he handed Cass his drink and quickly walked up the stage, following Bruce and Lucius up the small steps. Pulling on his practiced Tim Wayne-CEO-of-WE-smile, he dutifully shook hands with Dr. Collins and the head librarian. He briefly caught Raven’s stare as he moved across the stage to shake hands with people on the stage. Their gaze briefly met and her lips quirked into a small smile before quickly turning away and shuffling to the end of the line and out of reach for any other contact without attracting too much attention on them. Photos were taken swiftly and before Tim knew it everyone was ushered off the stage and he was wrapped up in a rather lengthy conversation on library work and the ongoing renovation projects.
Tim discreetly tried to look over his shoulder, barely catching a glimpse of the familiar slope of Raven’s shoulder disappearing into the crowd.
“Bruce Wayne,” Dr. Collins walked up to them just as the head librarian excused himself. The elderly woman beamed and quickly shook Bruce’s hand.
“Julia, it’s nice to see you again,” Bruce smiled warmly. “You know my son, Tim,”
Tim smiled and shook her hand. “Dr. Collins, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said, easily pulling himself out of his thoughts of trying to find Raven in the crowd.
“Mr. Wayne,” The elderly woman beamed and regarded both men in front of her.
Tim chuckled. “Just Tim, please,”
“I worked with you parents, Jack and Janet, many years ago on a few of their archaeological digs, back in their early years. I met you when you were a little boy once or twice. I must say I am impressed at what a successful grown man you've become, Tim,” praised Dr. Collins. The elderly woman hummed and smiled. “CEO of Wayne Enterprises,”
Tim chuckled, pulling on his best boardroom smile. “Thank you,”
“Also, this makes me realize that time certainly flies when the young boy you last saw in diapers has become the CEO of the world’s most successful conglomerate,” Dr. Collins chuckled, beaming up at Bruce with a mischievous smile. “That does make me feel old,”
Bruce chuckled as Tim politely made a face and their small group fell into an easy conversation. “The last eight years with Tim as CEO have been the best years for the company,”
Tim grinned playfully over his scotch. “Careful, is that praise I hear?”
The small group fell into an easy conversation discussing work and the research project. Tim quickly gathered that Dr. Collins was an old family friend of the Waynes, particularly of Bruce’s parents. He kept rapt attention to the conversation, nodding and chiming in where necessary, while occasionally glancing around the room for even a hint of purple or black.
Feeling distracted by tonight’s discovery of Raven, Tim was ready to excuse himself from the conversation and pretend to make a phone call. That seemed to be the best way to try to look around and catch Raven.
“There you are,” Dr. Collins glanced over Bruce’s shoulder and beamed. She beckoned for whoever was behind Bruce to come closer.
“I was looking for you,”
Despite the years that passed, Tim recognized the familiar voice in a heartbeat. He watched as Raven appeared from behind Bruce. He schooled his face, trying to fight away any signs of recognition and familiarity towards the black haired woman. Tim watched in a mix of curiosity and internal surprise as Raven smiled softly at their group and confidently walked up to them. From the slopes of her shoulder, the elegant movements of her hands, to her black-violet hair, deep stormy blue eyes, and that achingly familiar errant dusting of a few freckles just around the hollows of her neck, Raven looked exactly like how he remembered her. Tim blinked and absently tapped his scotch glass as he stared openly at her, a sight he had not seen in years.
“Rachel, please meet Bruce Wayne and his son, Tim. As you know Wayne Enterprises provides extensive funding for our work,” Dr. Collins said, waiving at both men in front of them.
“Mr. Wayne,” Raven began, moving her champagne glass into her left hand and went to shake Bruce’s hand. A smile appeared on her face as she and Bruce exchanged pleasantries. There was no air of familiarity between them, despite the schooled smiles that stretched across both of their lips. Tim knew that practiced look from all the undercover missions he had seen, been with, her. “It’s nice to meet you. Thank you for all your support,”
Raven turned to Tim and he watched as her smile immediately curled up just a tiny bit more in that familiar teasing way he had not seen in the last six years. There was that achingly familiar twinkle in her eyes he often saw back in the day, reserved for rare occasions, and Tim found himself smiling back at Raven and eagerly drinking in her familiar presence. “Mr. Wayne,” she said to him, a small quiver in her voice that no one but him seemed to pick up. She reached out and shook his hand.
Tim gave her hand a brief squeeze and he was pleased to see how the corner of her lips curled into a familiar amused smile he remembered. “Just Tim,”
Raven hummed and nodded, pulling her hand back. “Thank you again for supporting the research and restoration project,”
“What were you busy with before joining this project?” Bruce asked curiously. There were little updates from Raven throughout the years as she left the team for university and eventually work. While in the early years of her sabbatical Tim kept some updates on her, these eventually became less up to date as Raven eventually seemed to do her own thing.
“I was in Iceland,” Raven supplied and explained that she worked on an ancient runes translation project with the local university for six months.
Tim felt a distant memory tickle the back of his mind and he ignored the tight feeling that accompanied those distinct memories. He ignored the whisps of memories that teased his mind. Dark blue eyes briefly caught his stare and he watched that familiar curl in the corner of Raven’s lips appear. Tim smiled in return. “Iceland is a beautiful country,” he commented.
Raven stared at him, dark blue eyes intense as he remembered them. “It is,”
“We’re glad that Rachel has joined our project. She’s a fine addition to our team,” commented Dr. Collins. The elderly woman smiled teasingly. “And we’re definitely hoping she’ll considering staying in Gotham after the project ends,”
Raven rolled her eyes in amusement. “We’re just two weeks into the project. We have a long way to go,”
Tim looked at her curiously. How could he have missed her entering Gotham?. “You’ve been here for two weeks?”
Raven looked at him as if catching the slight jump in his emotions at this little discovery. “Three actually, if you count my moving in week,” she shrugged in amusement.
Three weeks. Tim stored that information for later, for a later conversation, and ignored how it settled uncomfortably in his stomach. He instead smiled at her and titled his head curiously. “I hope the transfer into Gotham wasn’t too difficult,”
Raven made a face. “It’s been interesting,” she said and Tim easily caught her familiar teasing lilt in her voice.
“Let us know if you need any assistance getting you settled, I’m sure we can send over someone to help you with your apartment,” Bruce offered, smiling charmingly at Raven.
Raven waved him off. “It’s just a few more boxes, nothing really major,”
Tim watched as a young woman tentatively approached them and offered the group an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry to interrupt,” she said to the group and quickly turned to Raven. With a quick tilt of her head towards the right, she made a face. “The University Press wants to talk to you,”
Raven made a face. “Oh, Why?”
“Just stuff about the project and the lecture,” supplied the young woman. She offered Raven a wry smile and made a face. “Also one of them asked if you were single,”
Raven rolled her eyes before smiling tightly at Bruce and Tim. “I’m sorry, if you’d excuse me. It was really nice to meet you. Thank you again for all your support. I hope you’ll visit the library again and we could show you around our work,” she said. Quickly turning to Dr. Collins, she nodded politely. “I’ll see you later, Julia,”
Smiling at Bruce and Tim, she tilted her head and there was an amused glint in her eyes as she stared at them. “Gentlemen,” she then turned on her heels, casually drank the rest of her champagne with just a little bit more purpose and seemingly bracing herself for what was about to happen next. Standing a little taller and squaring her shoulders, Raven followed the young assistant towards the press. “So, what did you tell them?” she asked, amusement lacing her voice.
As the conversation between Dr. Collins and Bruce resumed, Tim took a long sip of his scotch and stared at Raven’s retreating form. A million thoughts ran through his mind and he silently wondered just how fast he could get through his business trip in Tokyo. Sushi would have to wait for another time.
characters : ushijima wakatoshi, f!reader
synopsis : you and ushijima had your first real lowkey hardcore fight as a couple
genre : angst, fluff
ps : i am trying my best lol, i am new at this if you any remarks my dm's are open. hope you enjoy <3
masterlist
Tumblr media
both you and your boyfriend, ushijima play volleyball that is actually what pulled you closer and ushi couldn't be happier
you've always enjoyed playing volleyball; it wasn't your passion and you wouldn't dedicate your life for it like ushijima but you still did your best all the time and you were pretty good
you actually were captain of the team for a while but then just decided to be a normal player
you practiced really hard; you didn't want to disappoint your boyfriend who was a great volleyball player
it really stressed you out though, especially when people would compare you or make really uncalled for remarks (this was maybe even one of the reasons you quit as a captain)
anyway these last days you haven't been feeling really good, the exams were upcoming and you wanted to keep up your excellent grades so you could attend the college of your dream
and not to make things better you had a practice match with you-don't-know-what-team and you couldn't care less
even if you were attending practice you were still kind of lacking, you wouldn't give it your all as usual and your teammates noticed that, you tried conving your coach into keeping you on the bleachers but he just wouldn't give up on you and your amazing serves
so here you were, sleep deprived, stressed out about school work and volleyball and your boyfriend didn't seem to notice anything, he would ask you times to times if anything is wrong but you would brush him off since you knew he was already preoccupied with the nationals
ushijima wasn't dumb though, he knew something was off with you but since you kept telling him not to worry he thought he would give you time unil you feel completely comfortable talking about it
he would kiss your forehead and tell you that he is here anytime
i ship you guys so bad wtf 😔
and as if the universe was against you, the day before your practice match you had an important exam, “at this point i should drop out and become a stripper” you thought to yourself as you were cramming informations into your brain
after your exam you headed to the gym to practice, you and your team stayed until late night and needless to say you only had few hours of sleep because you also had to wake up early to practice your serves, you didn't even have time to see your boyfriend so he could encourage you
you were exhausted, your brain was about to explode and your coach would still not let stay on the bleachers. the only thing positive was that ushijima sent you a good luck text message the night before
the match started, you were trying so hard to stay focused and to fall asleep; your serves were not as sharp as usual, you would miss the ball many times and the coach finally decided to change you with someone else
what you were not aware of is that ushijima and tendou came to watch the match and support you, they were weirded out at the way you were playing, it clearly was not in your habits to play that way
your team won the match but you couldn't care less, you just wanted to go home and sleep for one week straight
there were still a few people in the gym, you were getting ready to leave; you didn't even notice that the trio was coming your way
“y/n!” you heard tendou call you, “oh, hi sorry i didn't notice you were here” you replied, closing your bag “what's up?” you ask
“what's up with you? are you okay?” tendou asks, “what ?” you didn't know they saw everything, you kept staring at them until it hit you “oh, so you guys watched the match”
“yes, and what was all that about?” asked ushijima. “we can't always play well, you know” you shrugged, they were staring at you kind of shocked
“what? y/n did you see your serves ? did you see how many times you missed easy balls? it was almost as if i was watching a beginner! the team almost lost because of you” ushijima replies
“okay and ? i told the coach not to put me on the field yet he did. not my fault” you answered, it stung hearing him say that but it was true and you knew it
“thank god #8 came in, she saved the game ” he adds, what started annoying you. the last thing you wanted was to fight with your boyfriend
“good for them,” you clapped back in a cold tone what sent shivers down tendou's spine. he didn't want to get in between you two and he didn't know how to react since it was his first time seeing you like that
“you are my girlfriend, you know better! you should know this isn't only about others but the whole team! i heard people say stuff i didn't want to hear when you were playing an-” he couldn't finish when you cut him off
“ i know what people say ushijima! i know i am not dumb. and what if i am your girlfriend ? does that make me obliged to be a good volleyball player like you ? volleyball isn't my dream as far as i know i also have other dreams and other goals ushijima, but do you even care ? do you even bother asking me what i am passionate about ? and if you're ashamed of me, the so-bad volleyball player why don't you just go out with other great players ?” you snapped, what made the gym go quiet and all eyes stare at you and your boyfriend.
you gave him a last glance , took your stuff and went home
him and tendou stood there, alone now that everyone have left, still trying to comprehend what just happened, “wow, i’ve never seen y/n-chan like that” tendou broke the silence between him and ushijima. he didn’t answer tho, his mind was still replaying the fight you two had
you never fought; you guys were both mature and dealt with every situation you had to go through rationally so this fight really made ushijima tense up, something that tendou noticed
“ushijima,” tendou started as they were walking back to their dorms. “did you notice that y/n wasn’t feeling good right ?”
“hm? what?” the green eyed boy looked at him confused
“y/n is definetly not feeling good, you could tell just by looking at her face,” he stopped a moment before he continued “you can’t be oblivious to your girlfriend feeling bad, can you ?”
“look, i am not one to tell you what to do ushijima, this is your relationship but take good care of y/n before you loose her. she is a wonderful person and i know people who are just waiting for the right moment to have a chance with her,” he finished, sighing
“i don’t know what to do, we’ve never had a fight like this before and i sure don’t want to loose her,” finally stated ushijima burying his face in his hands, “i know i am lucky to have her, but you know how i suck at this relationship stuff...”
“give her time to cool down, but not too much time too. anyway goodnight” tendou pats ushijima’s shoulder before getting into his dorm
the days after you tried to keep it lowkey; you didn’t go to practice, you’d spend most of your time alone in the library or at home
your friends tried to contact you but you went on ghost mode, ushijima and the vb team too but you didn’t have enough strenght to deal with anyone not even your own parents
yet one night after everyone had finsihed practice you decided to head to the gym, you had so much frustration that you wanted to get rid off and the only thing that could help you was to hit in a ball
so here you are, at 10:30 pm serving in your highschool’s gym with all the power you had
what you didn’t know is that someone was there, watching this whole time hitting them balls with all the power you had wondering if they should come and talk to you or not
saying he missed you be an understatement, he missed your touch, the sound of your voice, your silly fights with tendou over who ushijima loved the most, the way you would hold his hand with no warning, the way you came to his practices and his teammates would all want to catch your attention. he was craving you and he couldn’t do anything but blame himself on how he lacked as a boyfriend
“man up, wakatoshi,” he opened the door yet didn’t catch your attention as you were still serving your mind obviously somewhere else
“uhm, hello?” he clumsily tries to catch your attention, which he succeeded  in
you turn, kind of startled but lowkey relaxing at his sight. “hi,” looking at his face you realized how much you missed him but the fight you had was still replaying in your head. “i was leaving, i just need to clean the gym” you said shaking off your pianful thoughts
as you walked by him he held you wrist making you stop, “y/n, let’s talk it out... please” his face slowly turning around, your eyes meeting his
he was right, you couldn’t just ghost everyone for the rest of the year, you just nodded and looked away
still holding your hand he took you to sit on a bench, facing each other. both of you wondering what will come out of this conversation
“y/n, i miss you, i was a horrible boyfriend i should’ve noticed how bad you were doing and comfort you instead of being a total douchebag, it’s just that...” he stopped for a while, thinking of the right words to say. “i just want the best for you, and i should’ve known vb isn’t your dream but i know how much potential you have and i just want the best for you.”
you couldn’t help but soften and the bluntness of your boyfriend, you knew he was genuine
“i don’t want to loose you y/n, and i promise to do my best to be a better boyfriend. please accept my apology,” you couldn’t help but breakdown infront of him
that’s it, you reached your peak and here you were sobbing in your boyfriend’s arms who was rubbing your back, trying to comfort you
he sure was taken aback when he saw you crying like that, he had never seen you like that and he never dealt with this type of situation but somehow he knew you needed to let everything out
he kissed the top of your head, whispering things like “everything is gonna be fine”
“i just got so stressed out, volleyball, academics, relationships... and i wanted to be the best but i couldn’t handle this much pressure and i should’ve told you how i felt but i bottled up thinking i could handle it,” you managed to say between your sobs. “ i love you too and i don’t want to loose you toshi,” he hugged you tighter after this sentence
“it’s alright love, i should’ve been here for you that’s the point of being together, it’s to lift a certain weight on each other,” he cupped your face in his big hands, wiping your tears, “no more secrets now, we’re here for each other,” you nod and he gently presses his lips against yours
“i love you, and i am here for you, please stop crying i hate to see my s/o this way especially when i suck at comforting you,” he made you chuckle
you’ve never  seen this side of ushijima, you knew he was trying his best right now, but you were glad you saw it today; it proved that he really loved you and you felt happy to have him by your side
“i love you too, toshi,” you hugged him tight and he kissed your forehead
both of you feeling relieved to know that your relationship was strong enough and you’d be able to count on each other and go through anything by each other’s side
