Pairing: Eventual Bucky Barnes x Fem!Reader
Characters: Natasha, Wanda, Pietro, Loki, Bucky, Sam Wilson, Clint Barton, a lot of the avengers cast is mentioned.
Summery: Bucky and MC meet officially for the first time!
This might a 2 or 3 parter (it's gonna be more because cannot help myself). College AU, our boy Bucky is on the hockey team, and reader is an art major (because I love that trope and couldn't help myself)
Warnings: Not beta'd! All mistakes are my own. Friends fluff, swearing I think, mentions of college students being college students. Bit of friendly harmless flirting between friends. Derogatory use of the word puck bunny. Bucky is a playboy. Mention of drugs (No use, just a couple comments). Fighting, and mentions of attempted drugging at a party.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I can’t do this,” You groaned looking down at the few sketches you’ve managed to produce since you refused to step foot back into the hockey arena again. You could feel the pit you were falling into already growing, and it was all because of a certain fluffy haired, sea-blue eyed hockey player.
“You can do this and you will do this darling,” Loki drawled out as he spoke with a hint of annoyance. He was laying down with his leg dangled off the side of the fountain in the student commons, an open area full of windows and natural light. His other leg was propped up and bent at the knee which you were using as a back rest. You side eyed him begrudgingly.
“This is awful,” you leaned your head back against his knee.
“Well don’t look now, but awful just entered the commons,” you followed Loki’s gaze and noticed Barnes and a couple of the other players entering the area. A couple girls were making their way over to them as they placed their bags down and sat at a bar table. Barnes' eyes swept the commons and caught your gaze, he stopped and squinted and you looked down instantly.
He nudged Wilson with his elbow, who made an annoyed noise, “what Bucky?” Bucky tipped his chin in your direction, Wilson’s eyes followed and he stared for a couple seconds. “Wait, is that the girl from the rink?” Bucky nodded, thinking the same thing. He couldn’t get your eyes out of his head, they were so expressive from the few glimpses he had of them. “She’s hanging out with Odinson’s brother,” the younger Odinson was usually present at the parties his brother threw but rarely participated in anything. Usually hiding away in a corner or in his room reading.
“I think so,” Bucky stood and threw his bag over his shoulder.
“Where are you going?” Wilson hissed.
“To say hello,” Bucky gave him his dazzling smile.
Loki noticed Barnes coming toward you two before you did, your head was down as you focused on the drawing you were working on, “trouble is heading our direction,” Loki said lowly, you looked up without lifting your head and saw Barnes striding in your direction. You swallowed thickly and kept your head down, he might just be walking in this direction for another reason. He couldn’t pick you out in a crowd, impossible, he only saw you twice.
“Excuse me,” your dreams were dashed as you saw the toes of his shoes and his frame created a shadow over your sketchbook. “I couldn’t help but notice you were at the rink a week ago,” he said, “and I know every pretty girl that hangs out there, can’t say I know you,” he said with an air of arrogance. You scoffed at him, side eyeing Loki who had his book covering his mouth, but you could feel the slight tremble from his contained amusement.
“I think you’re mistaken,” you said in a hushed tone.
“I don’t think so, you have the same hair and,” his hand snatched the sketch book from you. “Sketch book,” you jumped startled at the sudden invasion of privacy.
“Hey give that back,” you snapped harshly. Reaching to take the book back, he kept it from your reach easily. You stood now and pushed his outstretched hand out of the way to grab the book from his other hand. Your chest pressed up against his as you reached desperately for the sketchbook. “I said give it back.”
“Ah baby, don’t be like that,” your nose scrunched up and you narrowed your eyes at him, he had a playful expression on his face and his eyes were gleaming with mischief as he gazed down at you.
“I’m not your baby,” you said sternly. “And give me my sketchbook back please, now.” You seethed. His eyes flicked to you for a moment before flicking to the open drawing.
“You know that certainly looks like me, I know I have admirers. But no one has ever drawn me,” he mused as he continued to keep the book from your grasp. You looked at Loki who was already sitting up and standing.
“Give it back to her Barnes,” Loki's tone was tense, and stern. “She asked you nicely.”
Barnes' eyes snapped from the book to Loki in an instant and he turned to fully face Loki. They stood at the same height, but Barnes was stockier. “What are you gonna do about it Odinson,” Barnes taunted.
“Don’t be a child. You wouldn’t want to cause a scene,” Loki said in a tone with underlying intent. “You don’t need the coach to hear about another incident,” Loki said knowingly. You watched the tense exchange between the two men with wide eyes, the tension palpable. A few more tense seconds and Barnes relented, lifting his hands up in mock surrender.
“Whatever prick,” Barnes spat at Loki. “You ever want to have some real fun, you know where to find me sugar” he winked  and handed the sketch book to Loki and looked at you once more, his eyes roving over your body. Your eyes widened at his choice of words, taken slightly back by how hostile he became when Loki intervened.
Loki handed you back your sketchbook before putting a hand on your back and leading you the opposite direction of Barnes, you looked over your shoulder quickly before picking up the pace to match Loki.
Once sufficiently far away from the commons you stopped and looked up at Loki.
“What was that?” You asked. You know Loki knew Bucky, hell you’d seen him at Thor’s parties before. Usually you would be in Loki's room with him when you attended them, disliking them as much as he did.
“Barnes being Barnes,” Loki said with a slightly annoyed tone. “He’s got a rap sheet. One more complaint or misbehavior and he’s benched for the rest of the season,” Loki stated. “That doesn’t look great for an NHL prospect.” You nodded as you listened to him speak.
“Thank you,” you said softly as you hugged your sketch pad to your chest.
“It’s no problem darling,” he said back sweetly. “Now, you need to get back to the rink and get your project together.” You huffed and groaned.
“You had to ruin it,” you whined and threw your head back. “I’ll go with Nat to the next practice,” you relented and stared up at Loki.
Loki smiled and patted the top of your head “perfect darling.” You glared at him for a moment before shaking your head.

~The next day~
You sighed as Nat dragged you to the rink, making sure you had the appropriate clothing on this time so you couldn’t duck out randomly.
“This is the worst,” you groaned as you sunk into the hard plastic seats and covered your face with your hands.
“Stop whining, it’s fine,” Nat sat next to you and smiled at Clint who skated up to the glass. He waved at her and you before skating backwards, showing off. Nat was like a giggly school girl as she watched him. You rolled your eyes and smirked at her.
You propped your sketch pad on the arm of the seat and hunched over to draw. Your eyes trained on the skates as the players drifted by. The movement of the blades over the ice was incredible. You had stayed up and researched how the skating part actually worked, “Nat? Did you know the reason they glide like that?” You said absently as you focused on the sketch you're doing. She hummed in acknowledgment, “the blade of skate melts a very thin layer of the surface ice and they glide on the water from the melt,” you muttered.
“Interesting, no I didn’t,” Nat said back as she watched her man snipe a puck into the net. You were watching as well, sketching the stick as he flicked it effortlessly and the puck soaring through the air. Silence fell over you two once again as you focused on the paper before you.
That silence was quickly ruined by someone slamming into the boards in front of you and you yelped in surprise. You squinted at the body in front of you and then glared at him. Barnes. He was saying something but you couldn’t quite hear him, pointing to your ear and then shrugging to indicate you couldn’t hear him. He made some obscene gestures before skating away. You rolled your eyes and went back to drawing once again.
Then someone else banged on the glass making it shake. You looked up and glared, but this time it wasn’t Barnes, his teammate, “Wilson,” Nat said as you stared at him.
Wilson was pointing toward the center of the rink where Barnes was skating effortlessly, moving beautifully on the ice. He moved the puck back and forth quickly causing the defenceman to stumble and he scored on the net. He lifted his hand up in the air and spun on one foot. He pointed his gloved hands at you, you rolled your eyes in response.
As much as you hated to admit it, Barnes' movement was too captivating to not want to draw. “He might be a prick, but damn he can skate,” Nat voiced your thoughts.
“He’s handsome too,” you regretted the words the second they spilled out. Nat turned her head and raised her brow at you, a sly smile on her lips. “No, I don’t mean I think he’s handsome. He’s just you know, got that natural handsomeness to him,” you stammered. “Oh god, I’m making it worse,” you buried your face in your hands. Nat laughed a deep bellied laugh while patting your shoulder.
“No, you’re right. He’s handsome. And he knows it. That makes it worse,” Nat said, her tone a little sour. You nodded in agreement, he then flew past you two, you both rolled your eyes.
Practice ended and you followed Nat to the wait for Clint. She asked you to join them for pizza after practice. Standing in a hallway that leads to the locker room you were showing her what you drew that night.
“Ah, my number one admirer,” his voice rang out, you wanted the floor to swallow you whole. “Did you get my good side,” he asked. You rolled your eyes at him for what felt like the millionth time tonight.
“You only have good sides,” a whiny voice said and you cringed. Nat mirroring your expression but being much more subtle you’re sure.
“Hey babe,” Clint said as he wrapped his arm around Nat and kissed her temple. “Barnes,” he tipped his head toward his teammate.
“Barton,” Barnes said back, “you gonna introduce me to your friend?”
“Uh, she’s Nat's friend,” Clint said.
You shook your head and dismissed Clint with a smile.
“My name is…”
“I like Bunny,” Barnes cut you off suddenly. “I don’t do names for pretty ladies,” he stated. The girl hanging off his arm made a disgruntled noise and looked taken back by his open flirtation while she was right there. You felt a little bad for her.
“Nuh uh, I’m not one of those puck bunnies,” your eyes flicked to the girl hanging off his arm apologetically.
“Never said you were Sketch,” you scrunch your nose at the nickname.
“Original,” you sassed.
“I’ll figure one out,” he affirmed, you crossed your arms over your chest and shook your head.
“God you’re insufferable,” you muttered, glowering at him.
Tumblr media
“Is he always like that?” You asked as you sat down across from Nat and Clint in the booth at the pizza place. It was a local spot, well loved by the students that populated the town.
“Barnes?” Clint as he took a bite of his pizza, you nodded.
“Yeah, he’s all talk. He’s practically harmless,” you raised an eyebrow at Clint. “Off the ice, he’s hell on it.” You nodded. “So what’s the project you’re working on?” He asked.
“Movement, human movement. My art prof has a vendetta against me so I’m trying to go outside the box. Pietro offered to let me do the project on him at the track. But Prof. Grace would just say I made the safe choice,” I groaned. “And football season is over so I couldn’t do it on Thor.” Clint was familiar with Peitro and Wanda since they hung around Nat, same as Thor since the sports teams tended to run in the same circles outside games.
“Right, your roommates,” he nodded. You lived with Wanda and Pietro since the start of university, being you were good friends with them. You had met Nat your first year and subsequently met Clint when they started dated that same year. “You’re friends with Thor's brother aren’t you?” You nodded and smiled.
“Yeah, best friends since middle school,” you nodded. “So by extension I’ve known Thor and Hela since then as well,” you added afterwards.
“Why did you pick hockey?” You shrugged.
“Nat suggested I come and watch a practice. You guys move so fluidly on the ice it was easy to draw,” you answered simply, eating another piece of pizza. “And frustratingly Barnes is incredibly talented and moves beautifully, I might have to ask him if I can make him my focus,” you groaned and rubbed your temples. “But he’s insufferable.”
Clint let out a loud laugh at that and nodded, “he can be. He’s honestly not that bad once you can get past the jock personality.” You rolled your eyes.
“That’s like saying cocaine isn’t bad once you get past the cocaine,” you laughed. “I’m pretty sure the jock personality is just him.”
“Eh, he’s cocky, but he’s earned it. He’s pretty damn good,” Clint said.
The rest of the evening passed quickly as conversation drifted from the brunette that had been clouding your thoughts.
“Thanks for the lift,” you waved as Clint and Nat drove away. You quickly climbed the steps to your flat and entered.
“Wanda, Pietro?” You called as you dropped your keys in the bowl at the entrance.
“Living room princessa,” Pietro called sweetly.
“What’s you guys watching?” You asked as you walked into the living, stripping your jacket off.
“Silent hill,” Wanda answered.
“The one with Kit Harington?” She nodded, you smiled and joined them on the couch.
“How was practice?” Wanda asked softly.
“It was good, I’m going to ask Barnes if I make him the focus. And I think a bullet in the thigh would be easier to deal with than him,” you sighed leaning your head back against the couch. “I was considering asking Loki to come with me when I asked him. But I don’t think that’s a good idea anymore,” you muttered.
“Why's that?” Pietro asked.
“They seem to have some kinda beef,” you shrugged. “He wouldn’t get into it,” you said. “Bucky’s a player, Loki isn’t a fan of that. And he’s been around him at parties. He’s apparently one incident away from being benched for the season.” Pietro seemed to nod knowingly.
“I’m not surprised, he’s a bit hot headed. Gotten into a few fights with people. Usually with good intentions though. Seen him knock a dude out flat on his ass for trying to drug a girl at a party. He also tends to back-talk instructors,” Pietro said. “He doesn’t seem like a bad dude. A little cocky and a bit of a flirt. Seems harmless enough.” You nodded at Pietro’s explanation and watched the rest of the movie with them in silence.
You texted Loki to ask why he didn’t like Bucky. Curiosity getting the better of you. His answer came back in a couple short paragraphs.
He seems like trouble.
Like he can’t be stable for one week.
He looks down on the arts pretty openly as well. Well at least English.
And he was rude to Helena as well a couple times.
You nodded as you read the series of texts. Loki was pretty traditional and he was never a fan of bouncing from one girl to another. Bucky was very open about doing that.
He also gets pretty obnoxious at parties.
He’s had a few scandals as well. Skipping out on one girl to be with another. Bit of a womanizer.
Why?
You quickly typed back you were curious because he was mostly likely going to be the focus for your project.
I figured he would. Guys a prick but he’s good at what he does.
Everyone said that. From what you’ve seen he was pretty good at hockey, not that you could judge that very well. But there was more to life than a sport. You typed a quick thanks back and wished Loki a goodnight.
Wanda and Pietro both went to bed and you stayed curled up on the couch. You decided to do some research yourself. Typing Bucky’s name into the search engine, his stats came up, and few hockey related awards he’s won. Some articles about how good of a prospect he was. His draft position whatever that meant. Him and Steve were drafted together from what you could tell.
Then you saw a Reddit thread from your school's Reddit talking about him, the fights he’s been in, his lack of care for academics and some people fighting about him being their boyfriend and how he was a cheating piece of shit. He apparently got into an altercation with someone on the Polo team and he and the captain of your school's rival hockey team got into a pretty bad fight after a game last year.
Your eyes widened as you read about the fight Pietro mentioned, he was lucky the guy's family didn’t press charges from how badly Bucky beat him. Part of you knew that behavior wasn’t acceptable, but a smaller needy part of you found it insanely hot how far he went to protect the girl the dude tried to drug. You shook your head and closed the search and went to bed. You would ask him tomorrow after practice, which Nat was dragging you too again.

Hi! I just have to say, I love your blog so much!!! And the monster au idea is genius! I started reading what you posted out and loved it! I saw people doing questions on it so here's my own, what would happen if Yuu broke a bone in some kind of accident? Wether it was indirectly their friends fault because they were fooling around or something else entirely and they just "weren't there to prevent it" (I can imagine the researchers would be quite In a frantic panic if they see the only human in their world getting hurt) how would the others react?
Oh goodness, that would cause quite the stir at NRC for sure! I’ve never broken a bone before, but there was one time I got punched in the face by a tree branch that got caught on the bag of the tall person I was hiking behind a few years ago. My nose was okay, but I still experience phantom pain whenever I think about that day! 😂
As a human in a world full of monsters, it’s not hard to imagine that the physical differences are more than cosmetic. Some monsters are more fragile than others, while some are so sturdy that they’re like a moose getting hit by a car—meaning that it’ll take a lot to hurt them. It’s also possible for them to heal quickly if they do get injured, though I like to imagine that they do get assistance when they need it!
Prosthetic arms, legs, tails, or wings? Yes!
Wheelchairs even for those with more than two legs? Yes! (Was I thinking of those videos of paralyzed puppies and kittens in makeshift wheelchairs scootering around? Yes. Yes I was)
Crutches and those scooter things you see where the person has their leg propped up and they’re moving around like they’re on a kid’s scooter (I think they’re called “knee scooters”?)? Absolutely!
All this is to say that—while not as fragile as a human—monsters know how to set and heal broken bones!
Dealing with the fact that their human friend has a broken bone, however, is a whole different kettle of fish depending on the type of fracture.
WARNING: Mention of bodily injury and blood. No major details, but proceed with caution! Under a read more just in case, but please let me know if I need to add any other tags so I can also tag things properly in the future!
Hairline fracture on their foot caused by hooves stepping on them? It’s manageable, though it may take a day or two for Yuu to notice they have an injury unless it’s run day at PE. Once it’s wrapped up in a cast to heal on its own, Yuu notices how any student with hooves (especially Deuce) will be more cautious about how close they stand to them or where their legs are when around the small human.
Dislocated arm from a friendly wrestling match and/or someone fell on top of their arm? Horrified screams all around upon seeing Yuu’s arm hanging limp by their side and their face contorted in pain. Once it’s popped back into place by the medical staff and put into a sling to speed up the recovery, it’s somewhat amusing seeing how their friends look like kicked puppies as they try and help Yuu with things around the dorm or in class. “It’s our fault you got hurt in the first place” is what they’d say if Yuu asked them why they were fussing. It’s sweet, but it’s up to Yuu to tell them to ease up and that they will ask for help when they need it.
Broken arm or leg? I can see this going one of two ways for both cases. If the arm or leg has a closed fracture where they can see part of the bone under the skin but the skin itself hasn’t broken? You can bet that there’s going to be a lot of concern about it. Depending on what the x-rays show, the boys and staff will be even more concerned if the incident resulted in Yuu needing surgery to repair the damage. A compound fracture though? Well…
Let’s just say that the moment the monsters smell the blood, they’ll immediately realize that something was wrong before they even see the bone jutting out from the large wound. This is a worst-case-scenario that—despite their best efforts—the medical teams may not feel they’ve prepared enough for as they search for blood that can safely be used to replenish what Yuu lost during the accident and in the surgery to try and repair the damage…or amputate to save their life.
It’s a highly stressful time for all, to the point many of Yuu’s friends can’t even focus on their work—not that the staff can blame them. They’re just as worried that Yuu might lose their life or limb...
When Yuu does manage to pull through sporting a new cast (if a little worse for wear), Yuu had better be prepared to have quite a few clingy monsters sticking to them like velcro! And gifts. Lots and lots of gifts!
I’d like to take a moment to point out that humans can be hurt by the most ridiculous things and yet in life-or-death situations. They’re able to crawl through snow with a broken leg for several miles, yet the moment they stub their toe on a coffee table leg? Down for the count.
Table: 1, Human: 0. U.U
So can you imagine just how horrified the guys would be to hear that Yuu/one of their relatives/a friend of theirs once broke their leg and crawled to safety in a major weather storm, yet just two minutes later they stub their toe and now they’re on the ground whimpering in pain. X’DDD
Also, to further prove that animals (and therefore the monsters) can have compassion for those who are disabled, just remember that there is a crow couple that’s been together for 12+ years and even though she has a broken beak, he and the rest of their flock protect her. ;;v;;

===
The day flew by. By the time night fell, Bear’s team were passed out in their beds, trying desperately to get enough sleep to tide them over for the next few days ahead of them. The cool night air beat back the heat of the desert as Bear crept past the other rooms to sit out on the fire escape, allowing herself just to sit and breathe, releasing the tension in her body.
The lights from the base cast long dark shadows across the pavement. From where she sat, Bear could see the lights in distant buildings slowly shutting off, people leaving offices, conference rooms and emerging from wherever they had hidden themselves away during the day. A stream of voices rose up as she watched a group of mechanics leave a hangar in the distance, joy and playfulness in full expression, even if she couldn’t make out what they were saying. It brought her a sense of peace the longer Bear sat out on the fire escape, watching lights flicker on, beating back the growing shadows.
She didn’t know how long she had been sitting outside when the door she had propped open swung out suddenly, startling her. “Hey.”
Whipping her head around, her hand clutching onto the large knife she carried with her, Bear saw that it was just the blond pilot who had haunted her every waking hour. “Jesus Christ Flyboy, don’t you know any better? I could have seriously hurt you,” she admonished, muscles relaxing slightly.
“Sorry,” Jake replied. “I didn’t mean to. I just saw the door open and figured that I should close it. You okay?”
Bear shook her head, scoffing a little at his words. “I’m fine, but I swear to God Jake, don’t do that again,” she warned him, finally taking a moment to take in his appearance. “How are you holding up? I know that Mav really put you all through the paces today.” When he gave her a curious look, Bear shrugged before replying “We share our plans for training with each other. It keeps us on the same page.”
Jake nodded. He had been distracted for most of the day, thinking about the woman in front of him. How she could take control of almost any situation, how her voice had sounded through his headset, the look she had given him, all wide eyed and surprised when they had been goofing around in her room. Everything about her made him crazy. “Mind if I sit?”
“Sure, why not?” Bear shuffled over a little, making room for the man to fold himself up and sit next to her. “Are you okay?”
He took a deep breath. “Yeah, for the most part. Just trying to make sense of everything,” Jake admitted. “I’ve done mission assists before, but just how big this one actually is, is a lot to wrap my head around.”
Nudging his arm with hers, Bear smiled. “I get it. Even I have the same thoughts before some of these assignments. This is a big operation. Bigger than anything I’ve done in a long time. Three targets in one place? It’s practically unheard of.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. A standard op is usually one major target or a few lower levels. Nothing like this.”
“Are you scared?”
Bear chuckled. “If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be human.” She glanced over at the man next to her, smiling softly. “Are you?”
“Scared or human?” Jake teased lightly, knocking shoulders with her. She huffed, shaking her head, but he could just make out the sparkling glee in her eyes. “Don’t ever breathe a word of this to anyone because I will make you regret it, but yeah, I think I’m scared too.”
“Will you now?” Bear grinned, the expression sobering a little. “Can I ask why? Or will you ‘make me regret this’ one too?”
The man beside her took a deep breath. “Is it weird if I don’t know why?”
“Nope.”
They sat in silence for a while, each savoring the closeness they had to one another and the peace that the fire escape gave them. Bear snuck a glance at Jake, only to find that he was already watching her. She shot him a wink, turning back to gaze out at the few buildings in the distance, only visible due to the powerful lights scattered throughout the base itself. The general calm settled her. It gave her respite from the chaos in her mind, her thoughts had been circling like vultures all day and just being here, present in the moment soothed her like a balm.
Jake was the first to break the silence. “So how is it that you know so much about me and other than what we talked about weeks ago on the beach, I know next to nothing about you?”
“Because you never asked?” Bear replied, laughing a little. She turned her body towards him, crossing her legs up under herself. “What did you want to know?”
“I don’t know, anything you want to tell me.”
“Well, that’s specific as fuck,” she teased.
Jake laughed, eyes dancing with the same humor and light she knew had lit up her own. “Fair enough. Fair enough. Umm…it just clued in that I don’t actually know your name. What is it?”
Bear bit her lip, stifling her giggle. “I’m that mysterious, huh?” He gave her a flat stare that just made her laugh louder. “Fine,” she gave in, before telling him. She watched as Jake repeated it back to her, grinning as he did.
“Why are you grinning?”
“Because it suits you.”
Bear’s face split into a grin. “Thanks, I got it for my birthday.”
Jake groaned, dropping his head to his chest as he shook with laughter. He could feel Bear chuckling from where her shoulders touched his. “That was terrible,” he said after his laughter stopped. “Like really terrible.”
“Well now you know what my sense of humor is,” came her reply. She was quiet for a long moment before softly saying “It’s nice actually talking to you. The real you. Not the jerk you pretend to be.”
He paused. “How do you know it’s pretend?” The question was hesitant, almost like he couldn’t believe that someone could see past how he carried himself.
Bear shuffled closer, pressing her side to his. “Because I see you. I’ve seen the way you act around other pilots, around people who know the reputation.” She hummed, trying to find the words to explain it. “I guess I don’t really know, ya know? All I know is how you choose to carry yourself, and if I can have more than one side of myself, why can’t you?”
Jake turned to look at the woman next to him. She wasn’t looking at him, seemingly embarrassed by her words. “Teddy?”
“Yeah?” she managed to squeak out.
“Thanks for not treating me like I’m not…you know.” The usual confidence and swagger in his voice had been replaced by a soft tone, one that seemed fearful of judgment.
Meeting his eyes, Bear nodded. Her heart raced as she gazed upon his face, taking note of every freckle, every little thing that made Jake so uniquely Jake. It would be so easy, she thought, to just lean over and press her lips to his, so easy to act on the feelings that rippled in the diminishing space between them. Her eyes fluttered closed, slowly withdrawing herself from where she’d leaned in. “Sorry,” she murmured. “I just… I can’t just…”
“I know.”
A small pause before Bear replied “I wish it was different.”
“I do too,” Jake whispered, leaning back against the building. It took everything in him to not say “Fuck it” and kiss her, but rules were rules. Bear could be dismissed from her position, or worse and he would never be the cause of that. In the end, it was her choice, her decision and regardless of how Bear chose, Jake promised himself that he would be happy with it. Because a life without her presence would be incredibly boring. “God Teddy, I wish that so much about this situation was different.”
“Yeah.” She looked ashamed of her actions, curled in on herself, fiddling with the knife beside her as she tried to push her feelings away. An action that was becoming increasingly difficult the longer she spent with Jake. A few deep breaths later, Bear turned back to him. “God, why do we do this to ourselves?”
He huffed a laugh. “Because both of us were trained to be the best of the best, so that’s what we want and look for. I think. I kinda just made that up.”
It was her turn to laugh. “That sounds about right. I really want to not focus on the sad shit right now because how the fuck am I supposed to lead my team if I have this conversation roaming through my head at every moment?”
“If that is what it takes for me to know that you feel the same, then I encourage it,” Jake joked, grinning widely as she rolled her eyes.
“Be serious.”
“I am.”
Another eye roll. “Let’s get off this topic, please?” Bear finally looked back at him, and Jake swore his heart stopped. Her eyes glimmered in the dark, the minimal light creeping out from the hallway shining on her. She looked soft, comfortable, something he’d only seen once at her home and Jake swore never to forget it.
“Fine, but only because you said please,” Jake teased, bumping her arm with his.
“People do what I tell them to because I have a few more bars and medals on my whites, I don’t usually need to say please,” Bear replied, her tone full of humor.
Jake shot her a wink. “I’ll make sure to remember that.”
This man would be the death of her. “Gross.”
The classic Seresin smirk flashed across his face. But she cut him off with a look that reminded him of the look Phoenix gave him sometimes when he was being a dick. So Jake kept his mouth shut and wiggled his eyebrows to make her giggle. “So, borrowing a question from my niece, what’s your favorite dinosaur?”
Bear gave him a confused look. “What kind of question is that?”
“My 4 year old niece asks that question to everyone she meets. I figured I’d give it a try,” Jake told her, shrugging. “So I’ll say it again, what’s your favorite dinosaur?”
“Oh god. Umm… I might have to say either a Velociraptor or an Ankylosaurus. You?”
Jake grinned at her. “One, the fact that you could name two is impressive. Two, I’m going to have to tell you that the only right answer in her mind is the Stegosaurus or the Mosasaurus, but I have always preferred pterodactyls.”
“And you became a pilot, how original…” Bear teased. “Let me guess, you loved planes as a kid too?”
“Sort of? I liked all kinds of things,” he replied. “I’m pretty sure I jumped back and forth between firefighter, football player, or pilot for most of my childhood.”
She gave him an indecipherable look. “Somehow those make sense for you.”
“Really? Even the football player?”
“Especially that one.”
His green eyes narrowed, but the playful gleam that had been in his eyes from the start still remained. “I’m not sure I like where that is headed, Miss Teddy.”
“Too bad, Mr. Flyboy,” she replied, an innocent look taking over the teasing grin. “You are just going to have to deal with it.”
“You wound me, darlin’.”
“Better you than me. Is it my turn to ask a question?”
“If you want to, although I’d be surprised if you didn’t already know the answer,” he said, a teasing look in his eye.
“Shut up. Anyways, how many siblings do you have?”
“Four. Two older, two younger.”
Bear cringed a little. “Your poor mother must be a saint if all of your siblings are as bullheaded as you.”
“Where do you think we got it from?”
She gave him a curious look. “Fair enough. It would take a stubborn woman to raise you,” Bear teased, bumping his arm. “I kid, I kid. But she sounds wonderful.”
“She really is,” Jake told her with a faraway look in his eyes. “I owe a lot to her.”
“I’m sure you do,” she replied. “What about your siblings?”
“What about them?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know, what are they like?”
Humming in thought, Jake looked over at her. “Well, it’s two boys, three girls total. My brother Lewis has two kids, the niece with the dinosaur question is his daughter,” he began before going off on a tangent and telling her all about his siblings. Jake told her how his youngest sister had a scar on her nose from running into a door, he told her about his childhood pets and she listened patiently, chiming in every so often with another question.
Jake fell silent after a while, sneaking a glance towards the Seal. He met her gaze and grinned as her face split into a yawn. “We really should be going to bed. It’s going to be a long few days,” Bear said softly.
“Probably a good idea. Can’t have the Commander dozing off in the final briefing, not a good look,” Jake replied. He sat up, stretching, letting out a groan as his shoulders popped.
Bear flushed a little at the sound, pushing away the thoughts that sprung to mind. “Definitely not a good look,” she agreed.
By this point, Jake had maneuvered his way up, holding out a hand to help her up, which she took without hesitation. The force of him helping her up was a little too much as she had to brace herself against him, her palms coming to rest flat on his broad chest and she felt his breathing hitch. “Sorry,” she murmured, risking a glance up at his face. His bright green eyes were on her, pupils dilated.
Clearing his throat, he stepped back, steadying her. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I’m just gonna…” She pointed to the door, snatching up the knife and slipping through the open door, leaving Jake alone with his thoughts.
“Pull yourself together,” the blonde man mumbled, rubbing his face before walking through the open door, shutting it behind him. God, these next few days would be long.
But he didn’t know how much truth there actually was to that last statement.

what's your opinion on how toh handled the detention track kids (viney, jerbo, barcus) in general
WHY WASN'T VINEY A MAIN SUPPORTING CHARACTER!? JUST WHY!?
I'll get into that point soon for the why but first: Jerbo and Barcus are just nothing to me. Not that I don't like them but they are the supporting cast to a one off character who managed to show up a second time. They're not going to get a lot of time to leave an impression, let alone to have some deep amount of personality. I think Barcus has some good jokes though and Jerbo is a good stooge to go alongside Viney's confidence.
But the trio is really defined by Viney. She is their leader, does the majority of the talking and is the one to make the major choices for them. Is that a bad thing? It could be... If Viney wasn't just so great. She has a shockingly firm personality despite such little time. She has loyalty and treasures it in turn but with a jaded edge that keeps up a barrier between her and others. You have to prove you're worth the effort but once you do, you're in for life. She'd be great as a leader of a band of thieves like that. She backs that up with a great ability to be two faced and use that for dryer, meaner comedy that is genuinely about character interplay and can easily mess with more innocent characters. Meanwhile, she'd probably have a hard time taking it back allowing for interesting back and forths.
In other words, she is a character the main cast was DESPERATELY in need of just personality wise. Everyone is either too nice to make jokes with others or too mean and not in an interplay way. It's just "I'm going to be an asshole right now," not "I'm going to mess with you a little." Some of the best lines I remember of the show come from that sort of teasing, like "Are you going soft on me, Blight?" There is way too little of it though.
But of course there's also just the fact that she provides a counterbalance narratively that also really should have been present in the show. See, the main cast only has two modes: Entirely wild and wanting nothing to do with the regime (Luz and Eda) or propping up that Belos is 100% right because if we even try to use other types of magic than the one we do, we practically can't do magic (Amity, Willow and Gus.) Now, the contrast is good on those two fronts but Viney just highlights a critical weakness of the show.
No one is actually even handed. It's either pure establishment or pure anarchy. Viney meanwhile WANTS to be a part of Belos society but wants the freedom to do more. To at least be allowed to try and expand her horizons. That allows for SO MANY interesting plots that could revolve around differences of opinion, pulling her back and forth, expanding on the world and how its systems work instead of just a black and white question.
But even above that: We'd have someone who ACTUALLY MIXES MAGICS. Now yes, beast keeping and healing are... Awkward to mix, to put it mildly, to the point where Viney doesn't even try. Hell, when she's put on the Flyer Derby team, she's praised for being a great healer... Which is the track people tried to force her to do as her only track. Puddles is purely there for flavor. It kind of discredits her whole choice to have multi-tracked because even other people only want her for one track. BUT if the show had actually tried, they could have genuinely shown how the two make for stronger magic. You know, actually support Eda and Luz's thesis as their only argument in the show is just that knowing a lot of magic is cool. For what purpose? To be cool! What other reason do you need? (That's sarcasm btw.)
She's just bizarrely a character who is almost impossible to ignore as just a good addition to potentially not even the main supporting cast but just MAIN CAST. Hell, if TOH admitted it was a romance, I could easily have seen Luz, Amity and Viney forming a love triangle where Viney is pulling Luz more towards rebellion while Amity, who's parents profit so much off of Belos' world and only uses one type of magic, is more about the establishment and the good it brings them. Just some sort of push and pull that is COMPLETELY absent from the show.
Then again, it would have had to, you know, actually commit to its worldbuilding or ever question if Luz's mindset is actually correct beyond the second episode. It would inherently be more complex and actually have to focus on its story. That's not surprising either because of what Viney inherently is.
She is a wild witch and the show cannot keep wild witches around without actually admitting the Isles is either a complete sham where Belos has no power (not that it doesn't feel that way already) or isn't some idealic, basic bitch fantasy world for Luz to never want to leave. Since neither is an option, Viney shows up for an episode that shoots taking the coven system seriously in the foot, and will be finished off in Reaching Out, while abstractly dissing modern education systems and then exits stage right so she doesn't cause more of a fuss. Yes, technically she comes back later but just as a body for the Grudgby team people might recognize, not to explore her character or issues.
Same could be said for Jerbo and Barcus. A good element that TOH barely uses and wastes all their potential because it's not actually interested in telling its own story.

Dean putting up a facade, acting like it’s badass that John leaves him and Sam alone at a motel for weeks on end. Acting like it’s super cool that he doesn’t have a curfew or any real rules. But you can see that he’s trying to convince both Amanda and himself that he’s happy with the situation. Also major props to the casting team for supernatural cause Brock Kelly looks so much like Jensen, it’s actually crazy.

I just finished watching the first episode of Thai BL series The Sign and...
Tumblr media
(Spoilers ahead for ep 1)
Episode 1 : Best pilot ep in any BL ever???
First up.
Major... MAJOR props to the stunt team and the fight choreography! like, the first episode had me absolutely hooked for the plot. There was not a single dull moment the entire episode. And the way they introduced the main characters and their traits was just... chef's kiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, the color grading and cinematography 😭😭😭I am currently a beginner in graphics and designing and let me tell you, to get the color grading perfect is absolutely insane. Most series miss in the pilot episode and gradually get better in the upcoming ones, but goddamn dude! this is absolutely insane how every single shot was so well planned and shown!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Characters!!!
Billy and Babe were perfectly cast in the role of Tharn and Phaya ON GOD the intro we got for these characters! My writer brain is having a field day and my cinephile heart is going insane!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, I loved how this is giving spy thriller vibes while also handling the supernatural aspects of the series.
Tumblr media
the way I jumped out of my seat watching the giant snake lingering in the water i was NOT expecting that!
Tumblr media
I've had these two for like... 20 mins? and I'll protect them at all costs like They will be my couple goals for 2024 fr fr!
Tumblr media

Jason Todd tropes that are bad and ruin JT's extremely based character:
1.Him being uncultured/stupid(Speaking as an active comics reader who has him as his main fix, this is literally a lie-He's a genius and has been since he was Robin as seen by his grades and a big Jane Austen and Shakespeare fan.I still can't believe i saw a poll calling it fanon, there's a canon panel of him reading Pride & Prejudice in prison and he quotes Shakespeare all the time💀)
2.Him being a hyperhorny pervert(Just because he's hot that dosen't mean he's trying to get into people he barely knows' pants and y'all are ugly asf for forcing your weird little assumptions onto an incredibly traumatized man based off said trauma. Also for the simps this is why y'all can't get boyfriends)
3.Anyone but Duke being his favorite sibling(Duke was NOT the only other Batkid he never had beef with for y'all to minimize Jason and his love for eachother.'Little Wing' isn't canon,it's time to move on)
4.'The rebel Robin'(Don't buy into DC's classism guys)
5.Speaking of which, let's just pretend the Roy and Kory deal never happened period.Ableism and racialized misogyny aren't made okay because OMG POLYAM REP!!!!!-Sincerely,a polyamorous and mentally disabled black woman
6.Both the erasure of his soft and redeemable side and the twisting of it to make him a perfect person
7.Pairing him up in age gap ships(He kills pedos,he's not gonna be into any of the whole ass entire children y'all aged up as an excuse to cover up your k*nks that leave you bitchless)or hc /oc Batkids(same deal,he's canonically an incest hater)
Jason Todd tropes that are good and have a basis in his character and add on to him:
1.Him being smug about what a nerd he is but getting big mad when someone uses that word for because he's 'too cool for it'
2.Him being demisexual(see Artemis and Rose evidence)
3.Duke and him being brothers who're also like chaotic and teasing best friends, with a side of Cass hating his ass and him being scared shitless of her with neither budging until he stops killing and then they become the definition of 'siblings who're mean to eachother to show affection'
4.Keeping his pre-reboot Robin characterization since a big part of the tragedy is that he was an extremely sweet ray of sunshine who still had trauma responses and then DITF changed him forever but not completely
5.His Outlaws team being HIS OWN CAST because he deserves to be his own person and his friends deserve to have their characters respected instead of literally just existing to prop him up.My personal hc is Eddie,Rose,Artemis,Kyle,Thaddeus and two ocs but i'm open to other ones!!
6.Giving him justice and letting him keep his duality core trait. He's extremely cruel yet unbelievably kind,he's got high intellect yet makes dumb mistakes,he's full of anger and sadness yet far from without happiness or calm moments,he's a grump yet very fun and so forth!!Also:He's definitely 'not knowing how to deal with kids turned Team Dad' at this point and i would love for that to be included in more Dead Robins Club content!
7.Pairing him up with the Outlaws i mentioned and Superfam ocs(i'm shocked this second one isn't common, aren't you guys always saying every Bat has a Super as their soulmate????Major L on y'all's part)
8.Go nuts with projecting your identities onto him!!!To me he's afro-dominican,bi,a trans man and neurodivergent asf just like me and it feels super good so i highly recommend it!

I think the kindest interpretation I have here is either that this map looks infinitely more horrifying in person (unlikely); or that someone in the cast or crew is very, very sensitive to gore (valid and likely) but like. There was a dead fox for several months on the tiny strip of woodsy area next to the paved trail on which I did the vast majority of my pandemic stupid mental health walks and it was WAY grosser. Like it's very well crafted, props to the production team, but I feel that this is tamer than your typical Spirit Halloween, or middle/high school bio class frog dissection.

LU Opera AU
Links, Zeldas and other major characters run a moderately successful opera house/musical theater. Some are onstage, others are in the orchestra pit or are working Behind The Scenes (special effects, costuming, etc)
Wars is the headlining diva singer
I love it
I can see Four and Flora as like, the special effects crew, they handle anything and everything that isn't the actors and they're fantastic at it.
Lullaby is their director/the owner of the opera house, and Time is her trusty right hand who also acts as the choreography director and main stunt writer. He doesn't preform, but he runs the actors through their hoops before they can even think of stepping out onto the stage.
I see Wind less as a performer and more like the gopher, and Legend is less an actor and more a jack-of-all-trades. Costume department had a flummox? Call Legend, he'll fix it. One of the props is missing? Legend will find something you can use until that one shows up again. Someone's sick? Get a wig and a dress, Legend will fill in tonight. Just, dude does everything, but never consistently, and never without complaining at least a little.
Warriors would totally be a diva 100%, but he also works hard for it and puts his all into every role. Blood, sweat, and tears, baby, literally. He loves his work and will do whatever it takes to keep his role and status (short of harming someone else of course)
I see Twilight as playing one of two roles, or potentially both. He's the top stunt guy, but he also does the heavy lifting backstage and helps craft the sets with Four. Both are decent actors to boot, so if they need a large cast, both will fill in roles that suit them (Four ends up playing the villain a lot for some reason) as long as someone else can cover their asses in other departments (Flora had lights/sounds covered, no worries)
Wild is that one actor who plays random roles whenever is needed, and he's a comedy genius. My current manager's husband and I were in theater club together and he was brilliant with turning boring moments into comedy gold, and Wild does this 100%. He's best when paired with Fable (they make a good team in SMASH I hear) and they're a brilliant duo, although Legend threatens Wild about his sister a LOT.
Dusk and Artemis are both Warriors' most common co-stars (besides Twilight, Lullaby likes playing up their contrast with each other on stage) and Dusk takes an almost mentorly role with the younger woman. They and Warriors make up the Diva Trio of the group and are the ones who's names pull in teh most money. The only downside is that while Artemis and Wars can both sing, Dusk cannot and it's kinda acting as a road-block in her career.
For this reason, I can see Malon as a music coach Time hired (and is totally not falling in love with, what are you talking about) who kinda just works beside Ravio (their in house prop maker)to get this group of dedicated idiots to take care of themselves. not that Time's sisters and brothers (Saria and the others) don't try, but they don't work there.
Honestly, i'm running out of ideas. But to finish off Sky would be Time's best student. I mean, his sword-fighting and stunts are through the roof (sometimes literally) and he enjoys most of his work. maybe because he has a sword-fighting instructor outside of work (Fi) but that's beside the point.
Hyrule is the new kid who signed on to help Legend and Ravio with props and costumes and stuff, but he's like, really talented and crap and all the teams are trying to poach him from Leg and Rav, despite how fiercely protective of him they are. He's not exactly comfortable with the idea of performing yet, but everyone is trying to have him at least try (were this a story, warriors would try and coach him, end up mysteriously and plot-relevantly sick/injured and Hyrule would have to heroically step up and fill his role because Legend can't for some reason)
....
Okay that's all I got, sorry for the dump, but inspiration hit me like a lightning bolt to Legend's boat

Highlights from the Article [x]:
"Only the fans of Our Flag Means Death can determine whether they’ll be satisfied with the show’s second season, which debuts on Max in October. But if you ask Fernando Frias, who directed three of the season’s episodes, he sounds pretty confident: “If my life depended on saying whether it’s yes or no, I would say yes.’’"
It’s “going to be unexpected and surprising, but also very pleasurable and satisfying for those who like the show,” promises executive producer Garrett Basch.
All that means is we’re not at liberty to share too much about what happened on set that day, which included emotional conversations, new cast members, banter with the Kiwi crew, and some seriously killer costumes.
The scope of the season is very evident back on set, as well. There’s a whole other pirate ship in addition to The Revenge, plus sets for a floating market, Stede’s cabin (empty when we visit), and the Republic of Pirates first glimpsed in season one. Behind the scenes it’s a maze of wardrobe, wig rooms, and dressing rooms. In another facility, props are stacked on shelves, ready to be taken away to storage as soon as filming wraps—vases, plates, antique furniture, and piles of mannequins replicating dead bodies which were used in one of the battle scenes.
Two armies are part of the action in season two, all of them needing elaborate costumes—around 150 Chinese pirates and a fleet of 100 navy officers.
She gives a hint of a storm in one episode: “One of the hardest days here in makeup was when they were caught in a storm on the back of the boat. [The cast] were saturated for a whole day, which caused havoc with things like tattoos and hair, wigs and beards.’’
“We’ve gone further this season than we did last season with those tones,” he continues. “So sometimes it’s quite interesting to remind yourself that you have to take your foot out of the tragedy—literally, your foot—and put it back into the comedy.”
Basch admits the fan following surprised some of the team, “but it made a lot of sense” too. After years of television shows and movies that built up the potential of queer romance only to stop short, Basch thinks the fervor for Our Flag Means Death “says that shows in the mainstream aren’t delivering that promise or that setup, and we have. That’s really why the fans have gone wild for it.” That promise, it’s safe to say, is kept in season two, and then some. On set that day in December, for example, there was a major romantic moment between two key characters.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN EPISODE 7 – THE FUNERAL WREATHS
Even though Moonlight Chicken ended yesterday, I'm still way behind on watching it. So anything I have to say about the series that's not just surface observation (and I do have some thoughts percolating) will only get posted days or even weeks from now after I've had a chance to digest things.
But in the meantime, this scene's caught my eye–
Tumblr media
(above) Ep.7 [3I4] 6.35
Among the floral tributes at Mrs. Hong's funeral are some displays that are remarkably unusual – they incorporate items such as steel trays and spoons, clocks and timepieces, and also electric fans. (The fans aren't so obvious in the screenshot above, but you can clearly see one at Ep.7 [3I4] 6.26.)
Apparently, in Thailand, household items such as those mentioned above, as well as other items like bedlinen, traditional loincloths, woven mats and even bicycles are sometimes given in lieu of wreaths made up only of flowers – see these links here, here and here for some examples.
Interestingly this is a relatively new phenomenon (dating back only a few decades maybe?) that was promoted by Thailand's Department of Environmental Quality Promotion as a way to reduce the volume of waste created by the gifting of floral wreaths.
Elaborate displays of flowers are popular gifts in Thailand, not just for funerals but also to temples. However, since they are typically thrown away (i.e., they literally become garbage) after just a few days, they are a major source of avoidable refuse. Replacing some (if not most) of the flowers with usable items means that anything unwanted by the receiver can be donated to the poor or to monasteries in need (donation culture is a big thing in majority-Buddhist Thailand).
Some more explanation linked here if you'd like to read more: Wreaths for a Good Cause and Please Use Electric Fans as Funeral Wreaths.
So this explains the unusual displays at Mrs. Hong's funeral – kudos to the Moonlight Chicken team for this nod to environmental awareness, as well as for showing international fans another interesting facet of Thai culture. 😍
But there's also one more little detail hiding in there for us fans of Moonlight Chicken, and it's pretty heartwarming – among all the messages of condolence is one that reads "ขอแสดงความเสียใจ จากครอบครัวชัยวิมล" – it's the one on the extreme left of the screenshot above, below the stainless steel plate/tray.
The translation reads "Condolences from the Chaiwimol Family". 💖And Chaiwimol (ชัยวิมล) is exactly the same surname as that of Moonlight Chicken's director Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol – it looks like the props department was having a bit of a giggle again. 😂
And you know, it's more than likely that "Chaiwimol Family" in the message is a reference to the Moonlight Chicken cast and crew – I like to think that they saw themselves as one family under their loong Aof, just like so many characters in Moonlight Chicken the series looked upon Jim as their kindly patriarch with a conscience and a heart. 🥰

Okay, so I watched Willow.
(also I got *really* lucky that the finale dropped literally today, about which I had no idea, so I could watch the series in one go)
The strongest point of this show is its characters. Loved basically all of them. Was a bit iffy with Willow (having not seen the original movie), but he grew on me. Favourites were Jade and Graydon. Phenomenal acting by everyone too.
The plot worked for the most part. I think the pacing could've been better in some parts, but overall, can't complain much. Graydon's arc stuck with me the most, and seeing him go from the person he was in ep1 to the one in ep8 was delightful.
Major props to the visual effects team. The fantasy elements were very cool, and this show probably had some of the best portrayals of magic spells I've seen in a while.
The biggest gripe I had was with the lighting in the first few episodes. It was so dark during some of the scenes, it really took away from basically everything happening in them. Please guys, I want to see your beautiful costumes, hairstyles, choreography, acting, everything. Please let me experience the product of the thing you worked so hard for. Don't let it drown in darkness.
Absolutely adored the main romance between Jade and Kit. I wished there was more of it, but I'm also happy that it exists in the first place. (Also, i might never forgive whoever decided that kidnapping kit right before she kissed jade was the way to go. Never had the rug pulled under me so hard)
Is it just me or is the cast unreasonably attractive. Just, damn.

Congrats on the release of yet another epic music video!! I’m wondering, do you have any idea how many approximate hours of work these take you to make? They seems super intricate and I’m so damn impressed you make them by yourself (ie not with a team). You continue to inspire me to be both silly and dedicated with my art, so thanks from the bottom of my little heart lol. Anyway gonna go watch again 👀
Thanks so much! It's really heartwarming to see how high the view count is already :')
Red Flags took about 3 months to make so approximately a month of work per minute. I took a couple days or weekends off here and there but the rest of the time I worked on RF only (thank you again to my extremely understanding commissioners!). I think this is a pretty unrealistic timeline for a typical animated project though. I worked with already established characters that I am very familiar with, with minimal variety in setting (most of it takes place in the restaurant, can recycle backgrounds) and I had a free hand in pretty much everything, I didn't have to coordinate with anyone and wait for back-and-forth with communication, voice files, etc. Obviously I showed WIPs to Tom but he's cool enough to leave me to my own devices creatively. And I had @cameronaugust's help when it came to 3D models if I needed reference or props and my friends let me run ideas by them in private. The only thing that slowed me down was learning the software in the beginning.
^This in contrast with a more traditional animated project: it requires a larger cast of characters that I have to design from scratch, work off of someone else's ideas shot-by-shot, design a whole universe and draw/model extensive backgrounds, props, vehicles etc etc... it's a completely different ballpark. It would take way longer, because like you said, even with Cam's help on the side of his day job, I am still doing the majority of it alone.

Netflix recently released a live action adaptation of one of the world’s most popular anime and manga, One Piece. This adaptation was met with praise from fans and critics around the world as it stays faithful to the source material by capturing the characters goofy personalities, displaying the over-the-top unrealistic fight scenes, and following a similar storyline which many adaptations fail to do. The success of this show has led to the belief that we are now living in a time where adaptations can be done successfully as long as they are created by teams who truly care about the original.
One Piece’s success has led to discussions around other popular anime’s being adapted for live-action with some already receiving this treatment and failing, but in recent times these adaptations have become more successful than in the past as evident by One Piece and the live-action adaptation of Detective Pikachu, based on the Pokémon video games and anime. During 2017 Netflix created an adaption of the 2003 manga and 2006 anime, Death Note, which failed miserably and was despised by critics and fans of the original. This hatred came from the major changes Netflix made to the original, the characters were changed from Japanese to American with their personalities severely altered, all events are based in Seattle, and due to the shortened time the plot was condensed and ending changed. The original creators were also not directly involved with the movie which meant all changes were made by those not familiar with the original product. This attempt at their first anime adaptation proved as a strong learning point for Netflix with all the issues they had that led to Death Note failing, fixed for the adaptation of One Piece.
The One Piece creator, Eiichiro Oda, was heavily involved with production on the adaptation as well as casting which ensured that all characters closely resembled and acted like the character he created. The show had a large budget of 138 million USD which created realistic sets and props that allowed viewers to be fully immersed in the world. As well as allowing the first part of the story to be told over 8 one-hour long episodes which prevented the story from being rushed and missing important aspects to the plot. Netflix has shown that using these methods is a formula for success, which begs the question. Is it time for a live-action Dragon Ball Z?
The first attempt at creating a live action Dragon Ball Z failed miserably, with Dragon Ball: Evolution being considered one of the worst movies of all time, with the creator himself expressing his disgust with the final product. The movie failed due to having nothing in common with the original source material besides the name, the characters are nothing like their inspiration, being whitewashed and devoid of all characteristics that made fans fall in love with them, as well as completely throwing out the overall plot of the show. This attempt in 2009 led to the creator, Akira Toriyama, coming back to create more content for the Dragon Ball universe as he did not want the film to become the last piece of his legacy. However, this attempt was more than 10 years ago and now with Dragon Ball content reducing, it may now be the time for a live action adaptation to flourish due to audiences wanting things similar to Netflix’s One Piece.
If a new adaption were to be created following Netflix’s formula would be essential to its success, and there would be support from many influential fans such as movie star Michael B Jordan.
