Have you seen Fami's right ear ? Because I haven't.
The game of interpretation in reverse, or focusing on what seems to be avoided by the chapter, not shown, works! and even if it doesn't work, it's still fun and leads to wild theories, which I love to imagine. And this post is no exception to that rule.
We had chapter 155 where we interpreted backwards to find answers to Denji and Nayuta's existential crises.
We also interpreted backwards to better understand the inconsistencies in Yoshida's behavior and the implications for chapter 156.
In my opinion, chapter 157 is no exception to this rule. Focusing on what the author refuses to show in order to find the answers fits in well with a mangaka fascinated by cinema.
Not convinced? Chapter 156 ended on Asa's legs, like a superhero ready to take on the big bad alone. The next chapter directly contradicts what it had already demonstrated. But why? Because you shouldn't trust either the author or the way the characters present themselves to you. That's what this whole chapter is about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What matters to you may not necessarily matter to the characters. Our focus on the first page would be on Asa's missing arm. Yet she brushes it aside, as if she were dismissing our concerns with a wave of the hand: what's important to her, strangely enough, is wearing her uniform!
Tumblr media
Which raises another question... have you seen much of Asa without her uniform? Yes, we've seen her without it, but more often than not, it's her fetish outfit for readers.
I could tell you that, once again, this is to emphasize the fact that we don't have the same temporality on the characters, and that Fujimoto insists more and more on what he refuses to show, but I'll be accused of over-interpreting, so let's carry on.
Tumblr media
Fami's statement that appearing to be a high-school student is the best cover for me immediately brings to mind a specific public hunter, who also appears always dressed in his uniform! But people will tell me that I'm being too defensive of this character, so.... Let's continue even further
Tumblr media
Asa manages to turn the guns on those who were going to shoot them, all by imagining that she had been able to redeem them.
It's precisely because she's disconnected from reality that she's able to create the illusion that her power works
Tumblr media
And I repeat: disconnecting from the events we see in Chainsaw Man helps us too.
Asa is able to create weapons without even needing to touch them, i.e. to touch the concrete, the agent who watches over them is right to recognize her but wrong in believing she's there to help the church members in the basement, when in fact she's there for Chainsaw Man. It's normal for him to think that!
Because that's how she was presented on TV!
Tumblr media
Which shows what? That you can't trust everything you see
Just before, we had a focus on Asa's legs, particularly through her walking, the fact that she's almost running
Let's interpret this in reverse again. Did you see Fami's hands? Yes, we see them, but never up close and never open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What was important was obscured by the fact that, at the end, it was noted that she did have something in her hands, but the chapter focused on Asa's legs, even though she had slipped.
Tumblr media
Pay no attention to what was emphasized to guess what happens next
In the title, I'm talking about Fami's right ear, because she is abnormally shown on the same side throughout the chapter.
Because it's hiding an earpiece? I'd have liked to, but I don't think so. As someone pointed out in the previous post: you can still see her ear on page 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The point is not to think that Fami is tilting her head to hide something in her ear, but why is she shown so much the same way?
Tumblr media
The fact that she's bent over reminded me of chapter 140, when Denji visits the CSM church for the first time. At the end of that chapter, Barem presents an ultimatum: which side is heavier? Chainsaw Man represented by that cable on Denji's torso or his peaceful life with his family?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chapter 140 is called "Scales", evoking the weighing of these two choices, and Fami, who is supposed to represent the church, is already tipped over.
Why? Because the choice has already been made
Denji chose to be Chainsaw Man, but when he realized it, he was faced with the fire in which he lost his cat and dogs.
Tumblr media
When he transformed, he found himself endangering his little sister Nayuta
The scales tipped in Chainsaw Man's favor, to the detriment of his family.
The way Fami was always presented on the same side was to make it clear which way his head was tilting : to the left.
Okay, but how do you explain Fami's head being tilted the other way in other earlier chapters? It's normal, Denji's choice is very recent! He hesitated until now!
All this makes even more sense with her Chainsaw Man earrings, which represent cables.
And then you'll tell me "it would work if she had a cable earring on the same ear, but it's safe on both ears so it doesn't work", yes it does, trust us, we'll carry on.
Tumblr media
When does Asa fall in part 2? Often when death is near, almost like a bad omen announcing it. She falls crushing Bucky, she falls with Yuko who later dies prematurely, she almost falls when her mother sacrifices herself...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So death is near.
And two things can explain it :
Fami is bent over to symbolize the fact that Chainsaw Man has been chosen over his peaceful life.
The chapter again emphasizes that Asa can save Chainsaw Man by attacking Chainsaw Man, because Chainsaw Man prevents Denji from having access to his peaceful life, hence the fact that Fami is bent over.
Tumblr media
But let's think about it another way: in chapter 155, Denji emphasized the fact that he didn't know what a family was, having committed patricide, how could he possibly understand this notion?
Denji killed his father, his brother, his sister died for him...
Tumblr media
So Chainsaw Man has always put his family at risk, which seems logical given everything we've said.
But remember that in this same chapter, we found an answer: Chainsaw Man is an empty shell filled with the people he loves, his family, and his aim is to protect them.
When Denji says he wants to be Chainsaw Man, it's to protect his family, who fill him as an empty shell.
When Fami says we must kill Chainsaw Man to save him, she's right.
Maybe not because there are 2 Chainsaw Man, since Pochita and Denji are inseparable.
But because to protect what has filled Chainsaw Man's heart, you have to kill the source of his misfortune, himself.
And that's why it all works, even if Fami's two earrings are cables, because even killing Chainsaw Man, the empty shell, saves what filled it - his family.
That's why Asa falls, because the end and Denji's sacrifice are close at hand.
But second interpretation.
Remember, when Asa falls, it means that death is near. So.................. who's next to her?
Obviously, this is pure theory, but I find it amusing.
Why does Fami only show one side? Because she didn't present herself well.
If Fami has insisted on anything from the start, it's that we call it Fami, not Famine. Why is that? Because she renamed herself just as quickly as Yoru did, choosing a name that hid her true identity.
Tumblr media
Remember how Yoshida told her she was terrible at choosing names, to which Fami retorted that she didn't care if anyone found out who she was?
Is that really the case? Wasn't it to reinforce the fact that she was supposedly the devil of famine?
Tumblr media
The first time Fami appears, in Asa's school, she introduces herself as the war devil's big sister (= true), which she does again at the aquarium, introducing herself as the famine demon (= false), called Fami (= true).
But as we've seen, you can lie about a devil's name, just as Fami did with the fire demon, presenting him as the devil of justice.
So what's to stop her from lying about the fear she represents too?
Tumblr media
I know it sounds crazy, but what happened when the devil of eternity appeared? People were hungry!
And the first time Fami didn't intervene, the more time passed, the more the hunger grew, the stronger the demon seemed to become.
What's to stop the devil of eternity being the devil of famine?
You : "it's a tactic for Fami to use the power of the demon of eternity to starve them out". Yes it's true! But my theory about the wrong choice of devil names is possible too. The trick is not to say that what's been presented to us doesn't work, but to try and question it.
The famine devil falsely called the devil of eternity could be defeated by Denji twice: in part 1, because he had overcome the famine by becoming a public hunter
In part 2, because he fed Asa!
Tumblr media
If Fami has insisted on anything from the start, it's that we call her Fami, not Famine. Why is that? Because she renamed herself just as quickly as Yoru did, choosing a name that hid her true identity : the Death Devil.
So, since the answers lie in what we can't see, what's stopping Fami from tripping Asa?
Tumblr media
Which explains Asa's shocked face.
But above all, it implies that his fall was not an unintentional one, as it always is when death is near, but that it was caused by death.
So if we line up the interpretations: death doesn't want mankind to disappear.
How do I know this?
Because she said so! She loves pizzas.
Death wants to kill Chainsaw Man to remain the sole end of beings. To stop it, all you have to do is eat her.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had dinner at the food stall behind the gallery, talking about everything and nothing. Paul asked about my costumes and I showed him some of my cosplays and even a few original designs on my phone. He could name every single character I’d done, and I was quite thrilled to discover that he was just as much of a geek as I was. I don’t know why I had expected otherwise, considering the kind of roles he played.
Tumblr media
He told me he’d loved comics and superheroes since he was a child, so when the casting call for a live-action Llama Man series went out he had jumped at the chance even though he knew the risk.
And he’d been right. By the time the series ended, he was too established as Llama Man and casting directors were passing him over for more serious roles.
Tumblr media
He didn’t seem to mind that much though. He said that being a lead actor was hard work and he much preferred smaller roles where he could have some more creative input. These days, he mostly worked on Llama Man: The Animated Series and a few other voice acting gigs.
Tumblr media
After the gallery closed, we found ourselves on a bench outside. The night was warm. I didn’t feel like going back to my apartment yet, and Paul didn’t seem to be in any hurry either.
Tumblr media
“Finally, the director told me that if I didn’t get it together, he was going to replace me with an actual llama next season. So, obviously I had to bring a llama for the launch party. He did not appreciate the gesture. Turns out very few llamas are house-trained.”
Our laughter echoed slightly in the empty plaza.
“You know, you remind me a little of my grandfather.”
Tumblr media
“Ouch. You wound me. I’m not even forty, you know.”
“No, I mean, he was an actor as well. Conrad Richards. He loved pranks like that too.”
“Conrad Richards was your grandfather?”
“Well, he married my grandmother, but he was always grandpa Conrad to me.”
Tumblr media
“That’s amazing. I was a big fan of his, actually. I liked how he always seemed to have fun with it, not like those actors who take themselves too seriously.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, he never took anything seriously. In every memory I have of him, he’s laughing.” My voice wavered slightly. “Sorry, I still miss him a lot.”
“Understandable.”
Paul took my hand.
Tumblr media
“I wish I could tell you that it gets easier, but the truth is, it doesn’t. You just get better at carrying the pain.”
He looked away, seemingly lost in thought.
Tumblr media
“When my father died, my mother told me that grief is just love that no longer has a home. It has nowhere to go. So, what you need to do is give it a new home. Surround yourself with friends and family. Love the ones you have left even harder. It doesn’t make the grief go away, but they will help you carry it.”
He cleared his throat and gave my hand a gentle squeeze before letting go. I immediately missed the warmth.
Tumblr media
“Thank you, Paul. I mean it.”
“You’re welcome. Julia.”
We sat in silence for a moment. Then, he looked at his watch and smiled at me, back to his cheerful self.
Tumblr media
“Sadly, as much as I’d love to, we can’t sit here and chat all night. I have to catch a flight back to the Valley in the morning. So unless you feel like walking me to my hotel to make sure I don’t get lost, we should probably part ways.”
“Sure. Where’s your hotel, then?”
He hesitated, his eyes searching my face.
“ZenView Heights. But -“
Tumblr media
I leapt to my feet. “It’s this way.”
Paul grabbed my wrist and looked at me with a serious expression.
Tumblr media
“Julia, it was a joke. And that’s way too far to walk. Are you really sure about coming back to my hotel?”
I tried to listen for that little voice in my head, the one that was supposed to warn me when I was about to do something stupid, but there was only silence.
And Paul.
I nodded, slightly surprised at myself. Paul sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
Tumblr media
“I don’t even know what I’m doing any more,” he muttered as we walked to the street to find a taxi.

My Adventures With Superman - A Rambling Set Of Thoughts
Okay, I know I don't USUALLY make posts like this and I especially hate getting cynical and nitpicky about these sorts of things because I just don't wanna contribute to all the negativity on the internet... But this is something I just couldn't shake.
So last night I watched the first season of My Adventures With Superman and... I have a lot of mixed feelings about to be brutally honest which is a shame because I know SO many people really loved this show.
Spoilers for season 1 obviously
For the most this show is great and it has a good foundation for Superman and gets him and his relationship with Lois so right. I love how Clark is this big, soft himbo twink dork who really reminds me of Adora from She-Ra and Lois is this fun tomboy who falls head over heels for him. And to be honest, all of their moments were genuinely the highlight of the show for me. SERIOUSLY ITS LIKE CLARK AND LOIS BUT MADE FOR SAPPHICS LIKE ME AND I ADORE THEM
Tumblr media
I love the art style and animation too and really does put a very fresh new aesthetic on DC stuff. Sure, it's a bit too much like She-Ra and Voltron in places, but for DC, it's a really good breath of fresh air. Seriously, look at the designs of Deathstroke and Livewire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But sadly, that's not all the show is and this is where I have to sadly talk about my negatives with it.
Sooooo… this show was written a lot of the same people who wrote She-Ra and it seems to be a big fan of various anime things too, especially Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
To that end, the show has basically... turned Superman into a mixture of Adora and Goku, not just in terms of personality traits and in Adora's case, her relationship with Catra (Seriously, if Clark was a woman and blonde, I would swear she and Lois would just be Catradora)
This sadly does apply to how this show portrays the Kryptonians, who are implied to MOSTLY be a race of evil conquerors who tried to attack Earth only for Krypton to be destroyed. This is VERY similar to how the First One's were depicted in She-Ra, as well as how the Saiyans were in Dragon Ball Z. One could also argue that their attack on Earth is a weird mashup of the movie Arrival and the Second Impact from Evangelion but that's me getting very nitpicky.
Tumblr media
So naturally, we have Adora and Goku's traits being applied to Superman. And…. those traits don't really work for Superman, at all. Now I should be clear, it seems to be that Jor-El and Lara were actually like rebels fighting the evil Kryptonians (which is ironically Mara's whole deal... you seeing the She-Ra pattern here yet?) but like... I don't like this idea at all. Poor Clark even has a fucking breakdown later on and thinks he's actually some evil weapon meant to conquer Earth AGAIN just like Adora from She-Ra being used as a weapon by the First One's. And I just feel bad for him because he's trying to be the good decent Superman we all love... but he's getting dragged into this plot that pretty much breaks him... and I don't really like it.
And then there's a whole subplot about Lois meeting alternate versions of herself and discovering alternate versions of Superman who are evil (which is bizarrely how Kryptonite is introduced in this show) which.... yeah I don't like that plot either. Nor am I the fan of Task Force X pulling the whole "the Government is treating clark as hostile because they think he's an evil alien" plot which I have gotten kinda tired of seeing in a lot of modern Superhero media. It's either Superheroes being hated or hunted by the government or being made to work for them.
And you know where this all probably came from for this show in particular? Fucking Zack Synder and Man of Steel. It's kind of ironic because a lot of this show feels like its in response to the Synderverse, like it feels obligated to comment on how people see Superman now because of those crappy movies, something that I know James Gunn is probably gonna do as well with his superman movie basically a live action version of Superman vs the Elite.
And just…. no, none of this shit is really necessary nor is it a good idea. Because it kinda takes away some bits of Superman that I like. I know the show isn't done yet but… I can already make a good guess of where it's going to go. And where it's going… idk if I'm gonna like a whole lot.
It is clearly a show wanting to be different from all that has been done before with Superman…. but by being different for the sake of it, it's doing a lot of stuff I just don't like.
I just want there to be a day when we get a Superman thing that doesn't have to justify the man's own existence and role in a story because some objectivist edgelord made a bad movie with him in it eleven years ago.
So yeah, by turning Superman into more or less mostly Adora from She-Ra... I think they might have messed him a bit in my eyes. I hope season 2, whenever that comes out hopefully pushes things in a more hopeful direction and I could genuinely call this a good adaption of Superman. Because there is so much potential with just from the relationship of Clark and Lois alone that tells me that these creators just GET how Superman's character is.
So yeah, I hope that long rambling thought made sense.

Finally, Batman's references are done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made multiple because I needed to showcase multiple things. The main one of course is just Batman, as that's how Bruce will appear most of the time. however, it's still important to show how he looks out of costume.
Bruce has only appeared one other time out of costume on here, but yes, I did in fact give him brown eyes. Clooney's portrayal was always one of my favorite live action Batmans; despite Batman and Robin being awful in a lot of ways, the visuals and casting choice always stuck with me.
Another reason, and this is going to sound very strange, is that such clear blue eyes make me nervous. I know that works in Batman's favor sometimes, but I like brown better and I figured it's a good way to show Bruce's kinder, warm side.
Bruce's scars (without spoilers)
the scar over Bruce's heart and under on his ribs is from someone tried to kill him while he was training in China
some of the scars on his right leg are from falling down the well on his property as a kid. Similarly, Bruce also messed up his left foot in the fall, but he walks fine (usually) on both anyway
most of the smaller lacerations on his arms and legs are from his training in China as well
Batman's Main Inspirations
BTAS was going to be on here, no questions asked. It's easily one of the most recognizable versions, and having watching it religiously on Saturday mornings growing up, it showed me so many different aspects of the Batman universe and solidified my love for superhero stories
As previously mentioned, Bruce reminds me of myself in a lot of ways, so I projected a lot of good and bad traits and interactions into him
George Clooney's Batman from Batman and Robin wasn't the best, but it stuck with me. He cares for those around him deeply
BTBATB is such a fun cartoon portrayal of the Batman universe and I adore the art style and dialogue to pieces. The 60's TV version of Batman has a special place in my heart, and I love that this cartoon pays homage to that while still being it's own thing.
Batman: The Enemy Within is what started my whole spiral back into Batman, and I really like the direction they took with focusing on who Bruce is, and what kind of Batman you can be. And of course, I love season 2 for how it handles the Joker. Bruce can be so awkward, but you can still see how much he cares about doing what's right, being calculated, strong, and confident when needs be. It's also nice to see more vulnerable moments for Bruce. I know he's had plenty over the years, it's just the freshest example for me.
I'll be working on Joker's references next and also trying to get the asks done tomorrow, so see you then!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers.
I was tagged by @regicidal-optimism
In no particular order:
A World Away (A Step Apart), (14,531 words) my OW superhero/supervillain romance with identity shenanigans, a dystopian world, and in-world supervillain RPF social media posts. This one was so fun to write. I've spent a lot of time on various social medias over the years and I delved into it for the fake discourse, and some of those social media jokes are some of my favourite things I've written. Plus I got to make up two guys that I love, OW is so fun.
A Hundred Things You Have Not Dreamed Of, (27,743 words), a DSMP emduo au in a vaguely superhero au about coming back from dehumanization. This fic was the one where I had to go holy shit I really do keep writing about food as healing I need to start tagging that on my fic, but also I just had a great deal of fun delving into, on the one hand, the hurt/comfort of expecting pain and not getting it, and on the other hand, the actual legitimate joys you can find in the small good things of a life you're choosing to live, even if baldly speaking it's not a great life. Like these guys don't know how to cook, and they live in a shitty apartment, and they have minimum wage food service jobs and don't have internet, but they also have friendship and community and 3 meals a day, and a laptop that can play videos, and that can also be something to appreciate. Plus it was a really fun challenge to take characters who basically don't act like the characters at all, because of trauma, and show them gradually growing into themselves. I still love this one a lot.
three deaths, no burials, one sunrise, (804 words). Oh boy. This one. DSMP, and c!wilbur focused, and second person, and inspired by a richard silken poem and a ursula vernon speech and a post about how wilbur didn't get a grave. At this point I don't even know if that's true canon, but I love this fic for how completely it took over my brain, I sat down and wrote it in one setting. Fuckin' pulled out of me like unspooling rope hand over hand. Having complicated feelings about your death and how it was marked or unmarked by the people around you, and exploring that through video game statistics, is something that can be so personal.
The Totem Of Undying Job, (62,696 words), DSMP, the syndicate heist Las Nevadas. So oh man, this was written in the era of the prison arc and you can probably tell, but I am still proud of how much I went into existing lore for the characterizations, not to mention proud of pulling off a long-fic. I keep thinking of it and going "man I should write more prey duo", or "I should write more tntduo", or "dang, beeduo slaps", or what have you. The first full and complete novel-length thing I had written in almost a decade, and I still think it hangs together, concepted and written entirely just me with myself in a google doc. The way I approach writing is very different nowdays, but I still love this one and I'm proud of pulling it off.
And honestly there's a lot of fics jockeying for this final spot, but I will give it to Soothing Natural Energies by Rebalancing External Wealth, Today, At Rekindled Flames Marriage Therapy Conference, (4,482 words), my origins sneegza marriage fraud shenanigans heist. I wrote this one in 24 hours for an exchange, and I was absolutely digesting my own stomach with anxiety the whole time, but I got it done, and then I posted and people said it was funny! And it had good worldbuilding! They liked it! And I drank some coffee and sat down to read it and went what do you know, I also like this, I think it's funny. Sometimes when I go oh god can I actually write comedy I go back to this one and I remind myself that yes, I can feel out how punchlines work. Also that I should write more origins, it's delightful.
tagging: @chrysalizzm, @imperialkatwala, @creetchure, @lennjamin-o7, @droidofmay
(don't feel obligated, any of you, I was just mentally paging through the people I follow trying to find people who hadn't already been tagged.)

More cold currents au
For context Dick is Danny’s younger brother and he knows Danny is a half ghost he is not fully aware of all his powers, Ellie has been adopted as Danny’s daughter and Danny is ghost king on with the story? Summery? Brain vomit? Whatever enjoy 😊
So I’m thinking Danny is in college during this au and he’s getting ready to visit his brother during break but before that he had a trip to the Bermuda Triangle planned with Ellie to see if they can find any sunken pirate treasure. So they’ve been exploring for a bit they split up when Danny heard an explosion he goes to investigate when he sees a man swimming his way danny immediately turns invisible before he’s seen and suddenly there is a shout the man turns only to see a gorgeous man about his age struggling to get free from a wreckage.
Danny immediately jumps in sending a clone after the fleeing man while he rushes to assist the stranger when his arms start to glow and beams of water rush around him freeing him from capture. Danny comments that Well I looks like I’m not needed
The man looks around and shouts show yourself which reminds Danny that he is in fact invisible right now and he yells don’t shoot raising his hands and turning visible again
The man turns towards Danny and he has to channel his ice core to prevent his face from turning green when he turns those intense pale green eyes and then immediately backs up as a glowing sword is now pointed at him Identify yourself Kaldur all but commands
Danny you can call me Danny or phantom either, both whatever you prefer Danny rambles while staring at the other man and you are? Kaldur identifies himself as aqualad and demands to know what he was doing there and if he is in league with black manta Danny is clearly confused and explains that he and his daughter were exploring the triangle when he came across the wreck and who is black manta. Kaldur explains that manta is a villain that he was fighting and he is probably to far to catch now. It is at this moment that Danny is glad he listened to pandora about covering your bases and explains that if he was talking about a man in a black suit and an ugly helmet he actually sent a clone after him and they should be able to find him so long as the clone isn’t destroyed. Kaldur looks surprised at the statement the smiles and states that his assistance would be appreciated however he needs to regroup with his team. Danny is fine with that and says no problem let me just collect my wayward child and sends out a pulse of energy through his connection with Ellie to call her back danny then turns toward Kaldur and says brace yourself Kaldur looks at Danny confused for only a moment before he is almost knocked out of the way by a glowing black and white blur that tackled Danny. Did you find something? Is it shiny? did you find Amelia’s plane? I told her we would look! I found a squid and it tried to eat me! She continues to ramble off things while Danny just nods indulgingly while smiles at the interaction. Finally danny interrupts her to say no gold but I did find a someone you might want to meet. Ellie looks confused who’s hanging out in the Bermuda Triangle? That would be me Kaldur interjects I am aqualad however you may call me kaldur. Ellie gets super excited dude you’re a superhero she looks at Danny Dad he’s a superhero that’s so cool! Do you know Wonder Woman she’s so cool Granny told me all about themascyra and the Amazonians I wanna go there sometime that would be so cool danny laughs and says okay calm down you can bombard him with questions later for now we are gonna help him out. Ellie tilts her head confused and the two of them explain what’s happening they all decide to meet up with kaldurs team to report what happened and let them know he had a run in with manta during the mission. Ellie looks back and forth from Danny who keeps gazing at Kaldur with barely disguised attraction to Kaldur who has yet to notice and thinks oh this is gonna be fun
I don’t know why tumblr put a huge gap here but okay
The three of the head back to the closest island where Kaldur and his team agreed to meet up as they are swimming and Ellie tells them all about their vacation so far and how the were going to visit her uncle next before heading home before getting distracted and rushing ahead meanwhile Kaldur tells Danny that he’s glad that Danny is able to spend so much time with Ellie Danny replies that while things were pretty crazy when she first came into his life, well half-life, but he wouldn’t change a thing and while Danny isn’t looking Kaldur most certainly is which does not go unnoticed by the smallest of the three. Once they arrive at the secluded cove Kaldur says that his team should be there any minute before they arrive however Ellie wanders off and Danny says he’ll be right back when she doesn’t respond to his call, the bioship drops it camouflage moments later and superboy nightwing ms Martian and zatanna all exit the ship they approach Kaldur who greets his friends and gives his repot about manta just as he’s telling him about how he was assisted he’s interrupted by nightwing who has now been tackled to the ground by an over enthusiastic Ellie yelling Uncle Dick! all of them look surprised when Danny approaches and he says Dick! I didn’t know you were on a team! Dick replies that yeah they’ve been working together for awhile and introduces them to him and then turns to Danny and says I thought you got out of the hero life? Danny laughs and says he did but it’s the death that gets him everytime, but seriously We are just on vacation and we ran into Kaldur I had one of my clones follow the other guy just in case and here we are, I’m not gonna just walk away but just to clarify I am retired this is a one time thing….

the first thing i'm REALLY interested in is like. mmmmn. the. emotional space? i guess? of the campaign,,,, it's so, like, classic shonen jump teen titans type shit, right? & like these genres (cape shit especially) r so notoriously bad at inhabiting the actual emotional spaces of their characters-- u know what i'm talking ab, yr a cartoon guy, danny phantom Has to do the "horrifying shit can't have real consequences because this episode is 20 minutes, there's three more seasons of this, and nobody Actually wants to watch the kid superhero come to terms with the ramifications of violence or like, figure out how to write him differently", right?
so i guess i really enjoy that prime defenders IS working in this really classic, sillygoofy over the top classic shonen dc comics realm that i personally DO find SO much fun, but also it's being created By folks who love those narratives & also are creating it for an audience that's not,,, like,, 15, and dont have extrwmely tight deadlines and time constraints. i think what finally convinced me on the show was like, getting the downtime in between the huge shonen moments-- taking the time to, y'know, sit with the dying trex puppy, be kind of miserable on the flight back, have awful kitchen moments etc-- it's the kind of thing that i always go damn i wish this show or comic had. (to be clear comics also are good at this sometimes however big two comics at least have curse of 1 billion people have written any given cape which of course makes ummm. actual emotional development impossible)
OTHER THING IVE BEEN THINKING the characters are good i like them :] vyncent out here living his best.... reverse fantasy alien isekai life ? im so curious ab his multiclassing shit also, what the fuck is up with that? where r these kids PARENTS ?!! a shonen protag a horror-comedy isekai protag & some guys op emo oc walk into a helicopter with a rat compartment & r each given real emotional weight. etc etc etc. anyway immmm in class rn so i will cut it off here but!!! yeag. thumbs up + PLEAASE talk 2 me about the everything also.... just finished ep 5 auauauauaua

This week saw the release of yet another episode of "My Adventures with Superman", and as always I wanted to share my thoughts on it. These past two episodes have really been getting weirder and adapting some of the more 'out there' elements of superhero comics. Feels strange since the first few episodes seem to promise a more grounded tone and yet in this episode Mr Mxyzptlk, the mischievous fifth dimensional imp, is introduced to this universe, we find out that this universe is part of (sigh) a multiverse, and that there are other versions of Superman and Lois running around in those universes. It's a wild direction for the show to take, however I do think the episode itself is a bit stronger than the previous one, though I do have some quibbles.
Tumblr media
So with that let's jump into episode 7 of "My Adventures with Superman" (spoilers to follow) :
- Superman takes Lois and Jimmy to his spaceship and fortress (?) in Smallville to let them learn a little bit more about him. I find it interesting that so far, Superman still doesn't seem too curious about where he came from and what he is. Heck, Jimmy and Lois are more interested in that than Clark himself. Maybe I'm reading too deep into that, but this does remind me of "Superman Smashes the Klan" - in that comic, Superman is reluctant to really engage with his alien origins because they're a strong reminder of how different and unique he is from ordinary people, and his character arc revolves around him eventually accepting his unique alien nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAWS's version of the character is also self conscious about his alien nature, and this episode reminds us of that. Could this show be building up to a similar character arc for Superman ? I certainly hope so, because I loved that character arc in that comic.
- It was hilarious to see both Clark and Lois fret over the date that they were supposed to have in this episode. So far, this show is tearing apart the notion that Superman is "unrelatable" with its dorky and endearing take on the character. I also appreciate that Lois is trying to find out more about Superman's origins because she wants to help him. It's just a sweet moment.
- So this episode introduces Mxyzptlk, and the idea of the multiverse, AND the idea that there are other versions of Lois Lanes patrolling the multiverse. This episode runs at a break neck speed, and I have to wonder if non-comic fans were able to keep up with it considering how "out there" these elements are. Although I guess even casual fans are familiar with the concept of the multiverse thanks to movies like 'Into the Spider-Verse', 'Dr Strange : the Multiverse of Madness' and 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'.
- I was super hyped about this episode because I heard that it was going to introduce Mxyzptlk who is one of my favorite Superman antagonists.
Tumblr media
For those of you that don't know, Mxyzptlk is a Fifth-dimensional magical being who has the power to alter reality itself and often uses those abilities to wreak havoc whenever he comes across Superman. You can think of him as a more powerful version of Loki from the Marvel Universe. His powers are seemingly limitless and there is absolutely nothing that Superman can do to physically harm him. The only way to defeat him is by getting him to say his own name backwards, which will banish him back to his own dimension for an extended period of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luckily, while Mxyzptlk is all-powerful, he is also super gullible, which makes it easy for Superman to trick him and defeat him over and over again. He's just one of those comic book characters that so charming and fun, and I'm happy to say that this show has an excellent take on him. He's fun, he's funny, he can come across as a dangerous threat in one scene, only to turn into a total goofball in the next scene. He's great and I especially love the idea that Mxyzptlk has come across different versions of Superman and Lois. This means that Mxyzptlk can run circles around the characters because he seems to know more about them than they do about themselves. It almost feels like Mxyzptlk is a twisted self-insert for the audience, especially for those who have seen different Superman adaptations and are excited to compare and contrast those versions with this cartoon.
- While I loved the show's take on Mxyzptlk, I have to say, I'm not thrilled about the multiverse aspect of this episode. I think a lot of people are getting tired of multiverse stories in general, and I definitely fall in that camp. Why do so many stories feel the need to establish a multiverse in the first place ? What ever happened to stories that could be self-contained and stand on its own merits ? Why does everything need to be connected to everything ? It doesn't help that multiverse stories often end up pandering to the audience with cheap nostalgia and fanservice. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the perfect example of this where the entire plot of the movie is just an excuse to drop in as many references and call backs to previous Spider-Man movies as possible. Thankfully, this episode of 'MAWS' keeps the nostalgia pandering to a minimum, though I still rolled my eyes at the references to the Fleischer and DCAU Superman. Those stories just feel less special when they're all connected in a grand multiverse. I also have to criticize the entire 'council of Lois Lanes' plot since it seems a little derivative of the main plot of 'Across the Spider-Verse'. Overall, I would have preferred it if they just cut that entire plot element out entirely and just had Mxyzptlk as the sole antagonist. You can still play with the idea of him being a dimension hopper, but the multiverse trope can be downplayed and limited only to his character.
- While I may have some gripes about this episode, it's still pretty good in how it handles the characters. I love how active Lois is in this episode, she's constantly moving the plot along, standing up for Superman when she needs to and working with him and Jimmy to take down Mxyzptlk while also evading the other Lois Lanes. This episode ends up sealing the deal when it comes to the Clark and Lois romance as the two finally share a kiss, and its a cute moment.
- This episode ends on a cliffhanger with Lois finding out that there are other versions of Superman in other universes, and unfortunately a lot of those Supermen appear to be evil. I griped about the multiverse aspect of this episode, but it seems like this show is using it to tackle the "evil Superman" trope that has become so popular in the past few years, and honestly - if this show ends up giving a giant middle finger to that tired old trope, I will take back all of my complaints.
So that's the seventh episode of 'My Adventures with Superman'. Despite my complaints, I still liked it and am excited to see more of it. I think I am going to skip the episode next week since I've heard that it's a two-parter and I would rather watch it in its entirety in the following week instead of watching it one episode at the time. It seems like the next few episodes will pay off all the plot threads that the show has set up, and I cannot wait to see how that turns out.

Just watched the premiere of My Adventures with Superman! /w my mom AHHHHH
Tumblr media
My 2 cents about it!!!! -
Spoilers for the first 2 episodes
Clark- UGH LOVEABLE GOOF HE'S SO KIND AND SWEET I LOVE HIS CHARACTER!!! He is different but not too different. He has strong morals but is quirky and not as serious as any other iteration (that I have seen) it's nice to see Superman happy ya know?🦸‍♂️ALSO HE CLEANED UP THE MESS IN THE CITY THAT HE MADE. LOVE LOVE LOVE THAT. I'm assuming superheroes usually do that but they never really show it right?
Tumblr media
Jimmy Olsen- Character design is so fun I love it! I think he was always kinda a conspiracy theorist but they really add to it here, but not in an annoying way! He's a sweetheart, totally golden retriever vibes. He reminds me a lot of Mikey form ROTTMNT. Interesting thing I liked I that he took blurry photos like yeah he's not a professional yet, and was getting cars thrown at him.
Ah yes Lois Lane- most of my Comparisons are from the past DC animated shows like STAS and JLU, the Loises in those are not my favorite just because of ego but THIS Lois is so fun!!! She's extremely ambitious :D
Tumblr media
The relationships between all of them- Clark and Jimmy have a great platonic relationship! Cool that they are roommates s too will make Clarks secret identity thing even more interesting!
Jimmy and Lois have a nice friendship, they are both crazy so pairing them together is so fun. Lol Clark is just trying to handle two little kids it's great. In Superman the animated series Lois and Clark are like late 20s and Jimmy is just a tag along teen, so them all being the same age is so fresh and interesting!
Tumblr media
Clark and Lois are so cute together it's wonderful <3 Chemistry between them is really cute (I love when Clark brought up her to his mom) Made me like
Tumblr media
The Story: Yes Yes Yes
Everything Else! - Animation is amazing! Put me in a mood to actually make art which is always a plus :))) Clarks mom looked a lot like my mom it was weird, also she's so supportive :') The boss guy was a J. Jonah Jameson type so always good for a laugh and a bit of an agonist.
So sorry for the rant I've just always loved these characters and seeing them brought in a fresh way is so cool!
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Alright, ik it's been a little while but now it's time for room/character closeup #3
~Max & El's room~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right off the bat I think it goes without saying their room is quite a bit more *fun* than some of the others; it was heavily inspired by the early s3 aesthetic (before everything went to shit that is), like when Max was helping El try out a new style, so I hope that shows in the colors and patterns I used for the wallpaper/rug/beds
(Also- this isn't character specific- it just makes me happy how the chair matches the wallpaper and the bedspread matches some of the colors in the posters)
Speaking of the posters
I remembered Max introducing El to comics at their sleepover (also s3) so I wanted to use posters that had that comic book/pop art feel to them, hence the pieces over the beds
Max is on the left. I felt like the sheer *attitude* it conveyed was something she would appreciate, that it suited her
El is on the right, and there's like a whole tangent to that one* but it's also another call-back to that s3 moment of Max showing El her comics and telling her who Wonder Woman is (listen I just really loved their dynamic and interactions in s3 ok)
*You might be wondering "duck why would you put a superheroine poster over El's bed are you really taking such a cliche/obvious approach with the decor here"
Listen babe. It's nuanced, okay?
First of all, yeah basically. I'm fine with being cliche. I do what I want and it fit the general vibe I was going for
But more importantly, remember how I mentioned in... one of the other notes posts for this au I honestly don't remember which one at this point- how a recurring theme here will be characters reclaiming things? At least I think I posted that, I know I wrote it down somewhere-
But anywho, yes, this is one of those instances
So I think, before now, El would have gotten to a point where she really resented "superheroes" -or more accurately, being compared to them
After everything. After being taken from her mother and having her childhood stolen from her in order to train her into a mini super soldier. After always having to be the strong one and fighting every battle. After always having to be the superhero for everyone else and still feeling like she can't ever seem to hit the bad guys hard enough to keep them down for good, to keep her friends safe. After having all those expectations and all that pressure on her for years when really she just wants to move on and be a normal kid and get to live her life
And yeah, maybe also after Mike's weak ass speech at the end of s4. I'd probably feel pretty icky if my boyfriend tried to encourage me by reminding me that my value comes from being a sword and shield rather than a person, if I kept getting put on this suffocating pedestal of always having to push myself to keep everyone else safe, and if I believed that was the very reason I was loved
[Don't take this the wrong way I love Michael Wheeler he's like a son to me but I do think that his and El's relationship was very unhealthy and that he didn't handle things very well]
So uh. Yeah. El hated superheroes for a little bit. I'm not sure when they put that poster up but it wasn't when they first moved in
However
After getting away from the place tied to so much of her trauma, so many of her burdens; after getting out of the situation that kept forcing her into the superhero role, I think her views on superheroes just as an objective, fictional concept would start to soften
And also I think the way Max handles it- treating her like she's awesome and strong and special but not dehumanizing her, trusting her but not pressuring her, encouraging her to be and embrace herself- that has something to do with it as well. It teaches her that she can be a superhero if she wants to be, but she doesn't have to. She does have superhuman abilities, but she herself gets to decide what, if anything, to do with them
When they all ditch Hawkins and move into the new house, El doesn't have to fight anymore. They've left the Upside Down and all its monsters, the empty lab and all its ghosts, behind them. For the first time in... well, pretty much her whole life, she doesn't have to fight, she doesn't have to use her powers, she doesn't have to play the hero. She gets to just... be a kid. A person
And everyone still loves her. Everyone still treats her like a part of the family, like she matters
So maybe she doesn't have to be a superhero. And maybe she doesn't have to hate them, either
But the concept is still something tied to her identity, something floating in the back of her mind; it's an identity in which she found value and strength, at a point in her life when she didn't really know who she was yet
So she still thinks about heroes. And she slowly comes to appreciate them in media, like the comic book heroes Max tells her about. Distinctly separate from herself and from her reality and past. From that safe distance away, they're admirable, captivating, impressive, compelling. And, yeah, maybe a little relatable
And... she finds that she's ok with that
She finds that she likes it, actually
Until eventually El has a strong appreciation for heroes, for their strength and what they stand for, because she understands them- but she doesn't have to be one of them anymore. Removed from the dangers and the expectations, she can see heroes- and herself- simply for what they are, instead of through that lens of pain and resentment and obligation
In the place she has found herself in life, she comes to terms with the fact that she is badass, she is important, she has value, and that those facts remain even when she isn't fighting anything
And in knowing it isn't required, that the people around her see her and love her for who she is rather than just what she can do, passively being likened to a hero doesn't feel so crushing anymore. Maybe she even starts to casually refer to herself as a hero from time to time, maybe jokingly, maybe ironically, maybe sarcastically, but deep down she does still feel that tie, that connection, in some ways- only now it doesn't hurt
And now she loves superheroes, enough to put one on her wall
[Btw, this whole analysis thing was heavily allegorical for my relationship with gender and I hope that shows. Superheroes=womanhood/femininity. If you get it you get it]
That ran away from me a little bit. Um. Moving right along, I guess
The third poster isn't that deep tbh I mostly picked it because it matched the wallpaper colors lol but I do think "good things are coming" would be a nice message to wake up to for two people who have been through so fucking much already at such a young age, remind them that they still have a wonderful life ahead of them despite the horrors in their past, y'know?
And then there's Max's skateboard, at the foot of her bed
It's symbolic it's important it matters that she brought it with her
She got hurt pretty damn badly at the end of s4, and nobody knew for sure if she was even going to survive, let alone whether she'd be able to skateboard again
But she did survive, and her body got pretty fucked up but she was in recovery, and maybe she'd never be quite the same again but she wasn't going to let that stop her, she wasn't going to give up
Her legs aren't as strong and her balance isn't as good as it used to be but she's determined to use that skateboard again no matter how many times she falls over relearning how to do it (and someone is always there to help her get back on her feet, if she wants them to. Yes it's Lucas how did you know)
Anyway I just think Max Mayfield is an incredibly strong brave person and she gets what she wants and what she wants in this case is to be the zoomer of the household
I don't suppose there's really much more to say about the room, so... guess that's a wrap for this one

I just need some little hcs of Liu and Jeff as kids, if you have time. I see so many imagines of them as adults, and don't get me wrong,I love reading those as well, but I'd just like to know what they were like as kids before all that shit happened. Besides some of my personal hcs, I'd love to know some of yours as well. You are my favorite writer <3 Take care of yourself!
Here's a childhood memory fic and Jeff sleep talking in a shared room with Liu
I'm very honored to be your favorite writer!! <3
Jeff & Liu: The early years
Jeff and Liu's parents were away often on their business trips, one could also go as far as calling it neglect.
They were dropped off at their Aunt's house, and their grandparents, and their parent's friends, forever hopping houses every three or so weeks.
Not once did Jeff see their parents show any kind of affection toward each other, it was like they were in business partnership with the exception of making breakfast and dinner whenever they were home.
So Jeff and Liu were completely dependent on each other for affection, learning basic things, doing homework, and cleaning the house. Y'know things that parents should be doing.
They often cuddled up under blankets together with a movie during the night, and reminded each other their bed times, and after getting in bed getting in a heated discussion about their new favorite superhero vs a shark-bear.
They were very close growing up, but as the trauma set in from neglect and resentment toward their parents, they grew apart when their teenage years started.
But before then, they knew how to make their own fun.
Hitting tree's with sticks acting as swords, splashing in streams, accidentally causing trouble at a nearby gas station. No one really cared what they did except their Auntie Jermma who was very strict with them whenever she pried her eyes away from her cigarette box.
Some little adventures included befriending a dog and trying to feed it cheetos, learning how to make pizza at ages 6 and 7, breaking a vase and gluing it back together and their parents never found out.
But one time, they were out in the backwoods, so deep that the daylight turned to dusk with the amount of tree's overbearing them.
Liu said he saw something weird in between the trees, and Jeff said to go investigate.
Truth is, Jeff was scared it was a bear and didn't want to get any closer. Liu was too, matter of fact. He side shuffled to get a better look at the creature, and screamed bloody murder when he did get a glimpse at the demon.
Liu turned, tripped, and broke his ankle on a sneaky root behind him.
But when Jeff looked, there was nothing there, and Liu was a blabbering mess between recounting the terrifying creature he saw and the pain from his broken ankle.
Jeff tried his best to console him, but ended up giving him a piggy back home while he sobbed the whole way there.
Liu knows what he saw to this day, and he knows why Jeff didn't see it, too. Fate was set out from when they were just a young age, and it wasn't fair to have their destiny's played like puppets.
Jeff helped Liu the whole time his ankle was healing, mostly out of the good of his heart, and also because his parent's weren't around to want to take care of their injured child.
Once they were old enough, they were allowed to live alone while Mr. and Mrs. Woods left for trips. They cooked, cleaned, and turned on the porch light every night on their own.
And nights were lonely, and Jeff often climbed into Liu's bed crying, wondering why all of his friends at school had parent's at parent teacher conferences, and recitals, and field trips.
It was a burning jealously that made him weep.

I wrote a beginning of an ask, clicked at a notification, and got deleted. Never mind that. "I was premaetitevely saying sorry for complaining at fandom stuff in your ask box" pretty much covers what that was. Sorry for that. This. (Or not, if you do want to talk about this stuff.) You are just about the only active Lucifer (TV) blog I know about. I would love to talk about this. This is very out of nowhere.
As I watched the show I (in a I may yet get this sort of a way) wanted, very much, to have a different show than I got. I saw the setup, the characters, their experiences, the events. I enjoyed watching it, but I also wanted for it to be a little more critical and a little less of a comedy. I wanted things to not be played for the laughs as much. I wanted for things to get serious, for Lucifer to be agreed with that he has been hurt, for him to be said to have been done wrong to. And, above that, I wanted that followed through with. I wanted for God to be punished for what he did to him.
Preferably killed in a fun little magic war with magic superpowers, I never expected that to happen in the show. Just in fanfic. I do not think it has happened in fanfic. (this is me asking for fanfic recs, if you have any)
I saw Lucifer. I empathized with Lucifer. With his situation, with his reactions. I saw that he was hurt.
I wanted for him to hurt the person who has hurt him back.
I can think that punishing people is a shit thing that hurts them. I can think that, from a mortal standpoint, punishment is bullshit. God having a redemption arc would have left me satisfied... but, no, I didn't expect that. I did think it was more probable for it to happen than for war on God to happen. But I expected the show to disappoint me.
As I watched it I remember I thought it was not quite brave enough to say what it sometimes showed. That it was not brave enough to straight up say God is a bad guy here. (if it had it would have probably not ran as long as it did, so, fair of it to itself, but still dissatisfying to me as an audience)
I am probably rambling. (I am writing this in an ask box, on mobile. I have accidentally delated three paragraphs. This is the Tumblr experience.)
I saw God do terrible things to Lucifer. I saw that he put him in hell (a terrible place) that he set the world up in a way that allowed for hell to exist (humans can leave, the show says, it is just the guilt that holds them here, but the thing about building a world is that you decide how it works and defending God's actions on the basis of its just how it is is a lot like saying the female characters fight magic wars in bikini and shoot lasers from their boobs because that's just how magic wars work in superhero city) (the world works how the writer decides it does)
This is pretty much just me complaining. I probably dont have a point I am gatting at. (This was brought on by Good Omens Season 2, in a side effect short of way. Mostly I was just reminded that damn remember how you watched that other christianity fanfic, remember how you stared at a wall and imagined a version of it that was more suited to your personal tastes and opinions and also had more superpowers shit because those do always look so cool)
Actually, if there was a point to this, then that point is fanfic. Have you, by chance, ever found the sort of a fanfic that really gets into God Is Bad Let's Wage A War sort of thing? Or if not, then something that approaches it? Something that at least frames God as a villain? Not only Lucifer's-Imaginary-Abusive-Human-Parent (pre-reveal kind of stuff) but full of actual God. Altrough, well, I'd read that too.
I suppose the thing I specifically really want to read is: Ella losing faith, properly so. Linda not just... going wow that's God but going oh shit that's Lucifer's abuser. I suppose I want to read about angels falling from Heaven and being framed as the ones in the right by the narrative. I suppose I want there to be a war. I suppose I would like to read about Hell Economics.
I probably should just write something myself at this point, but I am never very attached to but that's canon and would go if I change this I can change so much many more things to create a world I, myself, would like reading about more, and at that point, this would get very far from what the actual show was doing and I would stare at it and go that is a little too ambitious for me.
Yeah, no, the point of this was: do you by chance have any fanfic recs that you think I would like. Really sorry for bothering you if this bothered you... If you don't want to post this ask (very understandable) but would be open to offering any fanfic recs could you, idk, do a hello to that anon, have some fanfic in a separate post? I would really appriciate that.
...I'll, uh, go ask you about any active Lucifer blogs you know in a separate ask. (the fandom seems dead. is it dead? is it just you here?)
hello dear anon!
ngl reading this was an experience but one that i actually really enjoyed. i loved reading all of your thoughts and some of them i actually understand quite good. i enjoyed what we saw with lucifer but yes, there are some things that were missing for me, too. it's totally okay that you kind of even expected something different from it. you're allowed to have your own opinion.
either way i'm sorry to tell you that i don't read any fanfics but PLEASE if someone who reads this has any fanfic recs specifically like asked above that would be appreciated.
also sorry your initial ask got deleted and also some paragraphs accidentally by yourself. been through that and it's annoying.
the fandom is indeed dead except an occasional gifset every now and then (also by me @mauraeyk lol) i think it's more active on twitter and you're definitely not bothering me. i'm just sorry i can't be more helpful. take care! <3

(One of many things languishing in my drafts, based on my love for long-form, narrative based journalism and the fact that applying anything close to realism to this show is very fun. This isn’t finished and might not be so I’m throwing it out there)
Kids in the Abyss
Excerpts from Team Phantom’s first post-reveal interview together, a long form profile written by Anne Donnelly for Paranormal Digest.
The Fenton’s home is unique, even disregarding the laboratory concealed by a secured metal door just off the living room. Jack and Maddie Fenton purchased and refurbished the building, an abandoned fire house, shortly after moving to Amity Park. The changes made varied in scale, from a subterranean lab of glistening chrome and toxic green, to simply removing the fireman’s pole to prevent clumsy children from “learning about gravity too soon.”
Daniel Fenton is one of those children, known as the clumsier one when compared to his sister Jasmine. One of the first things I ask him when we sit down on the Fentons’ living room sofa is if that has changed since he, for lack of a better term, gained super powers.
“Absolutely not,” he replies without hesitation, “if anything, I’m worse.”
One thing the world seems to agree on about Danny Fenton is that he is the kid people would last expect to be a superhero.
“To be fair, there aren’t a whole bunch of superheroes to ask,” he says of this notion.
He’s right, of course, but it still seems unlikely at first glance. He looks different from his alter-ego, his eyes a clear blue and his hair dark, but upon looking closer it’s very clear there’s more to the sixteen year old than meets the eye. His gaze was very calculating when we first met, assessing if I was trustworthy, if I was a threat, as I’m sure he had to do countless times with varying results.
He hasn’t done any kind of interview since his brief guest appearance on the local news, he and his friends refused requests for interviews from the most famous talk shows in the country.
“I just…” he pauses, looking down and away in thought, “I never really wanted to be…famous, I guess. I think I used to, and I definitely wanted to respected and stuff, yeah. I don’t have a choice over a lot of that anymore, but I still have some modicum of control over what people know about me. By the way, my height is wrong on my Wikipedia page and they won’t let me change it. I’m 5’11”, for what it’s worth.”
(He is, for the record)
Sam Manson’s home is opulent, decadent in a way that reminds one of a more refined age—not the sleek, modern home of today’s new money, but adorned with historic decor and chandeliers.
“Grotesque, isn’t it?” Sam tells me when I comment. She’s not a fan of her family’s flaunting of wealth, as much as she enjoys some of the privileges it allows her. Looking at her outfit, an extra long Dumpty Humpty t-shirt and fishnet tights Tucker into dark denim shorts, it’s not hard to believe that she would prefer a more Addams Family aesthetic.
It’s clear from existing comment and from her social media—both personal and a Danny Phantom account—that she is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to her boyfriend, whom she’s known since childhood. I ask her why she and their other friend, Tucker Foley, are behind his verified account.
“Danny’s always been really bad at social media in general,” she tells me, “and we don’t get as overwhelmed by all the comments and messages we get daily. Like…Danny’s fought a ghost king and he’s saved the world but nothing terrifies him more than Twitter.”
Never having been above the odd conspiracy theory, considering my career, the first thing I ask Tucker Foley when we gather at his family’s kitchen table is to tell me about r/dannyphantom
“About the subreddit, or what I…” he pauses, “may or may not have done to it?” He grins when he finishes the sentence, in a way that’s a bit sinister.
The subreddit r/dannyphantom was spun off of r/amitypark about a year after the hero’s first appearance, and devolved into chaos shortly before the Disasteroid incident, due to the comments of one u/phantomarchiver on various theory threads.
“You’re all chasing your tails” the user would claim in one thread, and in another a cryptic “if I were you, I would stop looking further into this.”
Tucker recalled how he and his friends came to monitor the subreddit, going in anonymously every now and then to throw off the scent if any theories came too close. He didn’t know u/phantomarchiver’s mysterious but concise comments would eventually cause the members of the subreddit to turn against each other and fight to such an extreme that it now sits nearly empty.
“There are a lot of aspects of keeping huge secrets like this that aren’t fun,” Tucker tells me, “but that. That was fun. It was like a piranha feeding frenzy.”
“Did you intend to take the entire forum down?”
“God, no,” Tucker assured me, “I’m all for discussions, but people were dropping peoples real names, bringing up records of missing people that Phantom could be the ghost of. I’m very pro-free speech, but also very pro-[expletive] around and find out.”

“there is happiness after you, but there was happiness because of you” – Taylor Swift
This week, I’d like to explore how fandoms allow us to escape from our troubles, thus becoming a coping mechanism. But before I begin, I’d like to bring you back to the first half of that lyric that hints at a deeper truth – that even after we return to the sometimes harsh embrace of reality, there is an enduring happiness. A great reminder that a current source of happiness is not your only source of happiness. Also, for this post, I shall be drawing on my own experiences. Let’s start!
Trigger Warning --- eating disorder, depression
Introduction
Much like hobbies, fandoms are something we hold close to our hearts. They keep us entertained, they spark our interests, they light up our days. Now here is the question I’ll explore in this post: Can fandom be a form of escapism or a way to cope with real-life challenges? Let’s explore this relationship between fandom and real-life.
Escapism through fandom
Tumblr media
Fandoms have become gateways for people to escape to fictional worlds, even if the fictional world isn’t inherently better, they find comfort in the fact that it’s of a different reality. Like the Marvel universe that’s constantly faced with extraterrestrial threats, I enjoy watching their movies and television series because I like to imagine myself as one of those superheroes skilfully battling 7 villains at once. When I first started watching the movies, it was my form of escape from the reality of my eating disorder that rendered me underweight and weak.
Coping with real-life challenges
Tumblr media
Fandoms are also ways to cope with real-life struggles. For instance, 3 years ago in the depths of my despair, I became dependent on watching the television series, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. It was a comfort to watch the characters navigate through their life with their close friends. Then, I would watch the series over and over again to feel the same comfort. I escaped the loneliness of my reality through the lenses of their friendships and repeated episodes to cope with my anxiety of the unknown. Though the show did not solve my problems, it was a significant part of my life because it gave me hope that someday, I would have my group of friends to go through life with me.
Sense of belonging
Tumblr media
After I watch a show or a movie or read a book, I would go to TikTok to see what everyone else’s take on it is. Thus entering me into the fan community of the media. I don’t only watch these videos to see who has a similar opinion as I do, but I also like to see if someone notices a detail I missed, or if they have interesting theories or alternate endings. These things validate my experiences which in turn instils a sense of belonging for me in the fandom. And when I decide to interact with these videos by commenting, I would often end up sparking friendships with those in the fandom as well.
Creative outlets
I’m sure you’ve seen art and merchandise made by fans. It’s a thing because sometimes the official merchandise just isn’t cool enough or just isn’t our style. And so becomes the overlap of hobbies and fandoms. Taylor Swift’s current world tour, The Eras Tour, has taken this for a colourful twirl. Fans attending the concert have started a tradition of designing friendship bracelets to trade with each other as a fan experience. They also share their various creative designs with each other, turning it into a fun activity before the concert itself. Some of these friendship bracelets have even reached the donning of Taylor’s mother, Andrea Swift. Fan projects like these hold a fulfilling allure as they not only provide a chance for fans to connect deeply with each other but also offer the tangible joy of creating memory keepsakes transforming shared fandom into enduring, physical symbols of camaraderie.
Escapism vs avoidance
Tumblr media
My last point in this discussion is the fine line between escapism and avoidance. While finding solace in fandoms can be a comforting escape, it is important that we recognise the risks of excessive immersion. Too much reliance on fictional worlds or temporary sources of happiness may lead to neglecting real-life challenges. It is imperative that we recognise and acknowledge when escapism has turned into avoidance. And when this happens, we should always seek necessary and professional help to ensure a healthy relationship with the things that make us happy. Thus fostering resilience in facing life’s realities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, fandoms undeniably serve as both escapism and coping mechanisms, offering solace and connection. However, we must find a balance that enhances well-being. We should embrace the positive and supportive facets of fandom, avoid judgement and have an open mind when approaching fandom communities where diverse sources of happiness are celebrated. In short, be kind, everyone’s fighting battles you don’t know about.
