"I have witnessed the bonds within this family — I say family and not coven. These strange golden-eyed ones deny their very natures. But in return have they found something worth even more, perhaps, than mere gratification of desire?"

_________________
Summary: Evening naps in Jasper’s bed is a usual thing that happens daily, but the vampire isn’t complaining. Instead he loves it, Y/N’s heartbeat is Jasper’s haven.
Additional Info: (Fem!Human!Reader x Vampire!Jasper Hale.) Some sensual kisses being shared. Overall fluff. This is my first one-shot of Jasper Hale! Please ask for more requests!
Mentions of the Cullen Family, specifically Esme and Emmet.
TW: Slightly suggestive.
_________________
Rain droplets can be heard splattering outside onto the windows of Jasper’s room, but no sound can disrupt the deep slumber of Y/N. You were sprawled out on Jasper’s bed (that was installed shortly after your visits became more frequent). You were laying on your stomach, your left knee raised up to your side and your arms buried under the ivory colored silk pillow. Your breathing heavy but quiet. The aroma of Timber & Patchouli filled the interior, being lit by the vampire shortly after the mortal fell asleep.
Jasper laid beside the human, his back pressed against the wooden headboard of his bed while his hand played with a strand of Y/N’s H/C hair, This was a usual event that happens, and he loved it. He couldn’t get enough of hearing the gentle, repetitive beats of her heart. It was calming for the immortal.
Whenever he felt stressed or overwhelmed, he’d stand behind the latter and wrap his arms around her waist. He then would hide his face in the crook of Y/N’s neck, breathing in the female’s pleasant fragrance, drowning out his thoughts with her heartbeat.
“Jasper..?” Y/N calls out groggily. You slowly, but eventually push yourself up with your arms so that you’re now sitting up. Your arms extending outwards while a yawn left your lips. “Yes, darlin’?” Jasper quietly chuckles, finding the tired mortal to be cute. “I’m right behind you, love.” His voice soothing.
“Mm.. How long was I asleep for?” You ask, turning around to face Jasper with half-lidded eyes. “Just a little over an hour.” The male hums, reaching out to pull you onto his lap. You shiver at the sudden chilliness of his skin in contact with yours, but you soon grow used to it. “What are you looking at? Is there drool on my chin?” You question after noticing the male staring up at you. You turned your face away from the latter, trying to wipe away any saliva from the corner of your lips. “There’s nothing there, hon’. I’m just appreciating the beauty that’s in front of me.” Jasper whispers the last sentence into your ear, pecking your cheek afterwards. You quickly turned your head back to look at Jasper with slightly widened eyes. You gently hit his chest before covering your face with your hands, “Jasper!” You giggled, wrapping your arms around his neck, “..thank you, love.” You smiled, leaning in closer to fill the gap between the two of you, his lips feeling so soft against yours.
A small, faint gasp left your lips once you felt Jasper’s hands firmly grip at your waist, his thumbs caressing your skin. He smiled into the kiss, his tongue dancing with yours. You hum against his lips, pressing your chest up against his broad chest. Your hands riding up his soft, golden locks. “Jasper..” You pulled away momentarily to softly whisper before leaning back in. His lips detaches from yours, leaving a trail of kisses down to your jawline. “Are you hungry, my love?” He asks, pulling back to look at you in your eyes. You smile and nodded, “Starving actually.“
“Esme insisted on cooking tonight because she couldn’t the last time you came over. She felt very guilty for having you leave on an empty stomach, so beware for a feast.” Jasper chuckles as he intertwines both of your guy’s hands together, bringing them up to his lips to kiss the back of your hand. “Oh god, how am I going to finish all of it? You and the cullen’s don’t eat food.” You pout as you make your way off of Jasper’s lap, worrying about how you’re going to finish all of the food. “It’s okay, just sleep over tonight and have the rest for breakfast tomorrow mornin’.” Jasper says as he shifts over to the edge of his bed, shortly standing up afterwards. “I suppose that’s fine. My parents are away for the weekend.” You shrugged, standing up from Jasper’s bed, laughing at Jasper’s enlightened face. “C’mere, give me a kiss.” You ordered, shuffling over to Jasper to wrap your arms around his neck, tipi-toeing to take the male’s lips into yours once again.
But the door slams open abruptly, revealing the tall, built brown-haired vampire. “Y/N! Dinner’s ready!” Emmet announces, immediately regretting his enthusiastic entrance when he’s met with Jasper’s glare. “Dude, seriously?”
“Thank you, Emmet!” You thank, equally as energetic as the brown-haired vampire. You looked over to Jasper with a grin, patting his chest in attempt to calm the latter.
“Oh shit— sorry. My bad.” He laughs, “I’ll just..” He trails off, speedily running down the hall to the stairway.
“Now.. where were we?” Jasper hums with a smirk, leaning in.
“Nuh-uh. C’mon cowboy. I’m hungry.” You laugh, quickly running away from the immortal before he has a chance to pull you back into a kiss.
“Hey-! Wait! That’s not fair!” Jasper calls out, using his vampire speed to easily catch up to the young woman.

picnic
sukuna x f!reader
**part of my best friend's older brother fic
previous part linked here
(^^make sure you check since this was a double upload and I posted the last one very recently :D)
--
dear head of the cullen clan,  keep evening plans open – im getting off work early and we’re going on a picnic.  coldest regards,  the head of the volturi  (ps. am expecting a very wholehearted appreciation for the fact that it’s coldest regards and not warmest regards, because they are, in fact, vampires and therefore cold. because they don’t have a heart and such.)  (extra ps. this is a link to a shared spotify playlist. i’ll add a song and then you add one. we’ll keep it going.)
you snort.
dear aro of the volturi (does he have a last name???),  so much to unpack in one email, yet again. you really know how to keep a girl on her toes.  first and foremost, you are SOOOO ran through. so offended that i wasn’t the person who got to put you on to twilight and whoever it was, I HOEP SHE DIES! if you’re team jacob, you’re a freak.  second, SO VERY FLATTERED that you think i would be carlisle. a little haunting that you think YOU would be aro…but it’s ok cuz former companions to enemies back to lovers in our case would be kind of crazy???  third. done and done. i just added a song so hurry up bc i have like ten other songs i want to add and i am #impatient  see u after work pookie :D,  carlisle cullen  (very appreciative of the cold regards. you are a king among men.)
his response back is very prompt.
Never call me pookie again.  (very offended that you think i’d be stupid enough to be team jacob. and direct your murderous rage towards yuuji and my mom, who forced me to watch it in theaters with them.)
--
you wait for sukuna at the park two blocks down the apartment complex. the sun is hours away from dipping into the horizon, the chilly wind rustling through the trees. you realize now that the red skirt and white sweater might betray you in a few hours but decide that you’ll simply have to steal his jacket when he gets here.
and you would have already but he’s twenty minutes late.
and while this part of the city is extremely safe, sukuna’s ever constant fear of people attacking you on subway trains and stabbing you in alleyways has instilled an acute fear of strangers in you, which is why you’re gripping the sparkly pink pepper spray he bought you very harshly in your palm right now.
you think it’s sweet that he bought you a pink one.
but of course it’s severely ironic that you almost used it on him.
because he scares the living daylights out of you, by placing his hand around your shoulder from behind.
“hey. i’m sorry i-”
“jesus fuck-”
you instinctively hold the pepper spray up to his face, your hands shaking in front of you.
“i’ll use it, you pervert!”
sukuna leans his head to the side, which is when you’re finally able to log that it’s actually him standing in front of you and not a stranger, and you drop your hands in embarrassment.
“i mean, i’d really appreciate it if you wouldn’t doll face but–”
“oh my god, sukuna. i thought you were trying to rob me!”
“i’m smarter than that. the only thing inside your purse is lip gloss, which has very little value to me.” sukuna responds, dropping the little basket at his feet and taking the little stalk of flowers out of the top handle.
“i’ll have you know that it’s actually sold out in every store right now. so you could make bank if you sold it.”
“don’t tempt me. and for your sake, i’ll accept the apology you didn’t give me for just trying to rob me of my eyesight and for calling me a pervert? i’m getting really tired of the age gap jokes, y/n.” sukuna responds, as he lifts your hands at your sides and places the stalk of flowers in your hand.
you give him a big smile as you press your nose to the flowers, the scent fresh in your nose. and sukuna props down, setting a billowing white blanket on the ground before he taps the spot next to him and signals for you to sit next to him.
“who needs eyes?” you joke, as you squeeze his hands and set the flowers down next to the little basket.
“me, dipshit. how else am i supposed to look at you?”
you cover your hands with your cheeks as you watch him place all of the little things inside the basket next to you, laying them out perfectly. it’s albeit a weird assortment – two wine glasses, perfectly wrapped sandwiches, a mini-cake, and strawberry lemonade.
“well, stop perceiving me. this is so weird!” you murmur.
it’s enough to catch his attention and stop him in his tracks.
“what?”
the question makes you pause. and a little embarrassed. it was a little harsh to say while you were joking.
“oh, i mean…i didn’t mean it like that! i was making a joke about perceiving because eyes…vision…and i almost took your vision away! and you perceive with your eyes, because how else would you see…”
sukuna smiles, before shaking his head, and continuing spilling out the last of the contents – a set of gouache paints and two little small canvases. and he drops to his feet, yanking his shoes off, before sitting flat on the blanket and gesturing for you to join him.
“there’s no way in hell that was what you meant. but we’ll ignore that for the time being.” sukuna responds, hiking his legs to his chest and gesturing towards the spread he just put out.
you tilt your head to the side in confusion.
“you look very pretty today.” sukuna responds.
“thanks! you too!”
he narrows his eyes.
“uh huh. well, pick what we do first. the paint, the sandwiches, or the weird wine glass cake.”
“the wine glass cake? like from tiktok?” you ask.
“correct. i’m really bad at…cute dates. so…i did some research.”
sukuna refuses to look at you. because after admitting it, he’s suddenly busied himself with reading the back of the box of paints, like it’s the most riveting, intriguing thing he’s ever read in his life.
but the pink flush that’s creeping down his neck betrays him entirely, as you reach forward and push the little box down. and sukuna’s already glaring at you.
you place your chin on the top of his knees, reaching for one of his hands and smiling.
“you did research for a date?”
“you can choke on your spit.”
you grin.
“you really know how to turn a girl on.”
“you’re filthy.”
you grin.
“and you’re actually so precious, i–”
“don’t call me precious, y/n.” he whines, as he reaches forward to flick on your forehead.
you smile as you sit by his side, tucking the folds of your skirt under your leg as you reach for both of the wine glasses and hand him one.
“so how humbling was it to have satoru explain all this to you?” you ask.
he sneers.
“don’t even ask. he’s like the biggest nuisance i’ve ever met in my life. top ten worst moments of my life.” sukuna responds.
“i’m flattered you humbled yourself to him for me.”
“i actually asked suguru. they’re like…two peas in a pod, they can’t do shit without each other. the paints and stuff they gave me and the nice basket too.”
“that’s sweet of them. remind me to send them something later to thank them.”
sukuna scoffs.
“no need. they were more than happy to give it up for you.”
“ah yes. i hear they’re big fans of this camping bag story. the scouts honor and the fake story we had to tell them makes a lot more sense now.” you respond.
sukuna rolls his eyes.
“okay, you know what? sue me. i was like sixteen sleeping next to a girl for the first time. god forbid i enjoyed myself. and i don’t know why they’re all so hyperfixated on that story because it was a very normal thing to assume when you’re asked that question.”
you snort.
“and you say you’re not a pervert…”
sukuna leans forward, his eyes flitting down to his lips before he looks back up at you. and he can tell that you’re in a mood, that you’re trying to push his buttons by annoying him.
“you know i despise you right?” he whispers.
you grin, leaning in.
“is that right?” you whisper back.
“oh yeah. you irritate me.”
there isn’t even a shred of earnestness in the words he’s uttering. you know he doesn’t mean them.
“keep going.” you respond, as he presses a warm kiss to the side of your cheek.
“you’re a nuisance.” – a kiss to your forehead.
“an irritation.” – a kiss to the tip of your nose.
“like a fucking thorn in my side.” – and a kiss to the sweet spot right in your neck and his hand snaking up your thigh, which makes you nearly keel your head back from the sensation.
you place your hands on his cheek and pull him back, face flushed and his eyes nearly glazed over.
“are you crazy?” you whisper.
“what?” he asks.
“we’re in public, dumbass. you can’t just start trying to rile me up.”
sukuna leans back, obliging.
“so you admit it? i was riling you up?”
“oh, shut up.”
you reach for the sandwiches and unpeel one for sukuna. before he takes it, he places a tiny white box in your lap.
you frown. first the fancy date but the jewelry too?
“sukuna. you didn’t–”
“just open it. i’m impatient and i’ve been waiting all day. and i actually think you’ll like it. otherwise, you’re ungrateful and rude and you hate me.” sukuna responds.
you give him a tight lipped smile before you open the little box and actually smile.
it’s a dainty silver chain – the exact same as sukuna’s from the chain-links, but the build is a little thinner. and right at the center, a little charm of a star.
you reach forward for his chain, dangling around his collarbone. and surely enough, in addition to the original charm he had of an interlocked circle, there’s a star charm added right next to it.
“you always reach for it. when you’re talking or when we’re kissing. figured i’d get you your own since you’re such a big fan.”
“you are so…”
“perfect? sexy? the father of your children?”
“i was thinking adorable. can i answer d for all of the above?” you respond.
sukuna grins.
“survey says yes, princess.” he responds.
you yank the chain from the little box and hand it to him, before turning around for him to secure it on you. his fingers tickle against the nape of your neck, accompanied by a warm kiss, before he taps your shoulders to signify that he’s done.
“you know. you really are perceiving me right now.” you respond.
“and how’s that?”
“i know you’re obsessed with me and pay attention to every word i say.”
sukuna smiles.
“obviously.”
you jab at his side.
“i mean, i know you’re doing this because i mentioned picnics yesterday and always feeling left out. sure you could put two and two together that he never really bought me any nice gifts or anything when i said he ruined my birthday.”
“okay, captain obvious. and?”
you shove him once more, before leaning your head against his shoulder.
“well, i appreciate it. i know the whole…cutesy painting date isn’t your thing. we won’t have to do it again. and that you…you’re trying to make this whole thing special for me.”
sukuna scoffs.
“i’m offended. first and foremost, i always like to eat with you. every time i think that there’s no way you can amaze me more, you find another way to spill food on your clothes.”
“hey! that’s not true.”
“you already spilled on the blanket. second, this is a very violent way to eat cake. you literally mess up all the layers by doing that and destroy the piping on the cake which i can admit, i am a fan of. and third, i’m going to paint us as worms, which seems enjoyable to me.”
you curl your nose.
“worms?”
“yeah. what were you going to paint?”
“i don’t know. but it certainly wasn’t going to be worms. like the park or flowers or something.”
“boring. i’m going to paint us as slimy worms. and because we made it on this date, you’ll have to agree to put it up in the apartment, even if it’s ugly.”
“sukuna.” you whine.
“especially if it’s ugly. it’s a testament to our love.” he responds, dramatically placing his hands on  his chest.
“you know, you’re so right. worms have been a really defining feature of your relationship.”
sukuna leans forward and presses a quick kiss to your lips and an additional one on your cheek.
“you just get me, princess!”
and he breaks the little joke by lifting one of your hands to his lips, and pressing a kiss on all four of your knuckles before pressing your hand to his cheek.
“and i have to do special things for a special person.”
you return the gesture, lifting his tattooed fingers to your lips and doing the same.
“you know…you’re really good at this type of thing.” you murmur.
“what do you mean?”
“i mean, being a boyfriend. and…and being supportive about everything. sometimes i feel like i’m trying really hard to be the best but…just comes naturally to you.” you respond.
sukuna shrugs.
“don’t know if i’m perfect but…loving you has always come really easy to me. i don’t really have to think twice about it because these are actually just things i want to do for you.”
you groan.
“see! that’s what i’m saying! you always just…say sweet things, do sweet things. sometimes i’m convinced i’m not even half deserving of it, just because sometimes i don’t reciprocate that back.” you respond.
sukuna leans forward.
“you know, you actually do though.”
“as if.” you groan.
sukuna pauses, before leaning his cheek against the tops of his knees and looking out at the expanse of grass in front of you. you follow his line of vision – to the dog running in the distance, the wide, billowing trees, and the little flower truck on the side – which you now realize is where sukuna copped the flowers from earlier.
“i mean, this type of thing. that we have, or…or the way i act around you. it means a lot to you because, you…you’ve never had this before. right?”
“yeah.”
“well, i haven’t had you before. i know you see me as perfect, but…but when you say that i can tell that you don’t mean it the way my mom or…or yuuji think that i’m perfect. in the untouchable way.”
you lean forward, cupping the side of his face.
“sukuna. you’re so touchable.” you joke.
“you’re disgusting.”
“you love it.”
sukuna smiles.
“yeah, i really do. it does actually mean the world to me that you think i’m perfect how i am and don’t think i’m larger than life.”
“if anything, your ego could be smaller.”
sukuna leans forward and presses a kiss to your cheek.
“and…and even the other day. i know you were acting squirrely and weird when yuuji was near us and heard us bickering, but i was half convinced that you were going to take his side at the end, when he started saying that stuff about me. because it is true and i have acted a certain way in the past…and, you would have every right to agree with him if you wanted to.”
you frown.
“no, i wouldn’t. you’ve never treated me like that and i know you’re being earnest when you say these things to me. this would be a very elaborate way to get into my pants if that was what you were trying to do. and i know it’s not.”
sukuna smiles.
“that’s what i’m saying. every other person for me has never given me that benefit of the doubt, but you always do. you were the person who thought to tell me that my grandpa died when you all came to get me and you were the one who wasn’t mad at me. the things you do for me are the same, in equal magnitude, as what i do for you. if this makes you feel good, or…or on top of the world, you have to know that’s how you make me feel too. i’m half convinced that you’re basically made for me at this point the way you get everything right on point.”
you lean forward and press a lingering kiss to his lips.
“i really think you’re made for me too, ryomen.”
sukuna groans, dramatically leaning his head back, before nearly pushing you over and peppering kisses to almost every surface on your face.
“quit fucking saying my name. you have no idea what that does to me.”
“i mean, i think i have an idea.”
sukuna clamps his fingers over your mouth, before pressing a few more lingering kisses to your face and pushing off. and subsequently, picks all of the grass out of your hair as you roll your eyes.
and after that sukuna, admittedly, very aggressively uses the wine glasses to portion off little slices of the cake and makes it a point to finish off yours when you can’t stomach the sweetness. and true to his promise – sukuna paints the two of you as worms, but at the park, stargazing.
it’s a little silly, the way he paints it. you were expecting it to be more gory or gross, but it’s so corny that it makes you smile. because he draws the two little worms, but distinguishes between the two of you, by swiping some of your pink paint and adding a little ribbon to the one that’s supposed to be you.
sukuna explains the stars. because before sukuna had dragged you out of that shitty bathroom bar, it’s what megumi and yuuji said in his drunken mess – he had pointed at two little stars and likened them to him and megumi.
and you’re almost positive that at the time, sukuna found it utterly ridiculous. but now, he understood it – the sentiment. that you and sukuna were two little worms, and two stars, and two little flowers too.
and to his promise, the two of you decide to place the little canvases you drew at the end of the kitchen counter.
it’s only then that you realize that you have to go the whole ten miles for sukuna the way he had done for you – countless times again. and that if you were going in blind in trying to make something special, you’d have to take a page out of his book and do some research.
and there was only one person who could really help you, who you’d rather die than humble yourself to than ask for help.
regardless of that, you still call sammy the next morning.

an: they're about to do it. anyways....there is a very real playlist to match the one that they talk about in the fic -- and it matches the way it described in the fic! so it's interleaved, the first song is a song that sukuna would have added, the second one that y/n added, the third sukuna, so on and so forth. it's linked here! happy listening babies
second an: thank you for the love on the last chapter. it makes my heart really warm bc all of that was actually based on a REAL MAN and real things that I have felt/have said to me and just having people comment that they felt seen by it or it made them feel a certain type of way actually made me really happy and so warm. this blog was one of the first things I did after I stopped being really, really sad and i'm glad that i'm able to share a little joy here and there, if that's what this fic is for you. anyways this is long and sappy and gross and actually I just love you all for enduring the ouchies and the sillies with me a little bit 💌

Note
The batfam as teacher comment section in report card.
Dick: Mr. Grayson brings a contagious energy to the class and his enthusiasm is well-appreciated. However, he tends to channel that energy very physically and while that may benefit his learning, it's a disruption to other students. This is a frequently recurring issue that I would like to discuss with a parent or guardian.
Translation – Is this kid ADHD because he won't sit the FUCK down
Jason: Mr. Todd has displayed remarkable attention to detail and a love of literature that I can only attribute to positive reinforcement at home, and he's always a pleasure to have in class. As much as I appreciate seeing him apply his lessons outside of school hours, I believe there are more productive avenues of discussing Shakespearean playwriting with his peers than what he has been reportedly doing.
Translation – Stop biting your thumb at people
Tim: Mr. Drake continues to exceed expectations in his schoolwork, but his attendance and participation may become a detriment to his overall grades if unaddressed. I have caught him sleeping in class on multiple occasions but he has yet to provide me a reason why he is so tired. Additionally, last month one of our monitors caught him loitering in the bathroom with a note that I did not recall writing.
Translation – Get some sleep and also you can't make your own hall passes
Damian: I have had the privilege of teaching the Wayne family through my decades at this institution and I believe that Damian takes after his father the most in more ways than expected. His grades are stellar and he is well-organized, but I'm noticing familiar and concerning traits in his attitude and social interactions. I am requesting a meeting with his parent to understand the full context so I can devise a plan for out how to best support him.
Translation – Forget falling, the apple is still on the damn tree
Duke: Mr. Thomas has been a pleasure to have in my chemistry lab and is always willing to help classmates who are struggling. However, after last week's minor combustion reaction mishap, I think it would be worthwhile to review the lab safety packet that all students received at the beginning of the year.
Translation – How did you set water on fire
Cullen: Mr. Row displays a passion for transformative literature and demonstrates a clear understanding of modern media culture that has helped him synthesize a lot of our complex readings. However, I'm concerned about his laptop being a distraction, especially with numerous incidences of him looking at non-academic material.
Translation – Quit reading fanfics in class
Stephanie: You should be pleased to know that Miss Brown consistently keeps the well-being of her peers in mind. This semester, she launched a meal initiative for students whose needs could not be met by the school cafeteria. While we value her good intentions, she has been causing hallway obstructions and there are some regulatory concerns that we need to discuss.
Translation – She sold pancakes in the halls without a permit
Cassandra: Although Miss Cain is relatively quiet in class, she continues to blow me away with her breadth of knowledge not just on class materials, but also interpersonal details. While this is a good skill to cultivate, we ask that she dial it back especially with our faculty. Additionally, please remember that the teacher's lounge is a staff-only space and students should remain in the common areas.
Translation – She knows too much
Barbara: Miss Gordon is easily one of the best AP Computer Science students I've seen in my twenty years of teaching. She even went above and beyond the scope of our class to apply what we've learned to a greater school context. While that is deserving of credit, I'd also like to remind her that, in the future, certain ideas should be subjected to careful consideration before actions are taken.
Translation – She hacked the lunch menu to make every day French Fry Friday
Harper: Miss Row has a remarkable aptitude for the engineering process that exceeds beyond what students her age can typically grasp, and she is very inventive in her own right. That being said, I would appreciate it if she followed our lesson plans more closely and reviewed our guidelines for woodshop safety so everyone can continue to have a positive experience.
Translation – She made a working crossbow out of popsicle sticks
Carrie: Miss Kelley is a bright student who brings positive energy that is very much needed, especially in morning classes. However, she's been falling behind with several missing assignments at this point, and her explanations for why she cannot finish her work don't seem to be sufficient.
Translation – "Killer Croc ate my homework" Yeah and I'm Batman
Kate: Miss Kane seems to be very eager to move forward to the next stage of her life, as evidenced by her Career Day presentation. While I believe young people should be free to explore their passions, I also think that Kate would benefit from some workshops outlining more feasible options.
Translation – "Get bitches" isn't a career goal
Alfred: Mr. Pennyworth is easily one of the best students this institution has seen, both in his academic record and extracurricular activities. He recently expressed interest in the sharpshooting team, which I will not discourage him from, seeing how highly accurate he is. As of this year, I will be retiring as the coach for the team, but I wish him all the best.
Translation – I'm not about to get on his bad side
Selina: Miss Kyle's resourcefulness continues to astound me. Earlier in the semester, she forgot her locker combination and quickly improvised a mechanism to safely unlock it using only the materials around her. The speed and accuracy with which she did that will surely benefit her in the future.
Translation – Did... did she just pick a lock with another lock?
Bruce: No further comments.
Translation – whatthefuckwhatthefuckwhatthefuck—

~~~
Bass boomed around you, filling your chest with a dull thrum at every beat. The lights above you pulsated with different colors. Your arms felt sticky with a mix of sweat and whatever had spilled on the bar earlier in the night. The small glass pinched between your fingers held a pink liquid that you didn’t remember the name of, but it tasted like sweet berries and nothing like alcohol. That might have been why you had drunk three or four in the last hour without a second thought.
The sound of garbled speech hit your ears, and you turned in bewilderment to Jessica, standing beside you with a large grin. “What?!” You had to scream to be heard over the music.
“I said!” she started, grabbing your glass out of your hand. “I think you’ve had enough.”
A childish pout formed on your lips as you reached for the glass, but no matter how many times you thought you had grabbed it, you must have missed it by an inch. “Please! I paid for that!”
“Actually, a guy paid for it before getting shot down so hard I thought he might cry.”
“I’m taken, but that doesn’t mean I won’t accept a free drink.”
Jessica tried to stifle her giggle to remain stern but failed. “Okay, I’m just as guilty. But seriously.” She regained her disciplined facade as she put the drink back down on the bar and hooked her arm with yours. “I think it’s time to get some bad food and call it a night.”
You hadn’t realized how drunk you were until the mention of food made your stomach do a backflip, and you shook your head adamantly. “Maybe we just go home.”
“Yeah, I think that’s for the best. Let’s go get Ange and blow this place.”
You followed closely on Jessica’s very high heels, making sure to keep a hold of her. The staggering amount of people you had to walk through hadn’t fazed you before, but now that your head was spinning, it felt like walking through a fun house.
When you reached Angela, your head was swimming so much that you couldn’t concentrate on what your two friends were saying to each other. You only registered Angela’s relief at the prospect of leaving, and then you were all bee-lining it to the exit.
Once you got outside, the cool air quelled the nausea that started crawling up your throat. Angela and Jessica helped you into the passenger seat, and it was obvious to them how awful you were feeling. Jessica got in the back seat behind you and put her hands on your shoulders.
When Angela started the car, she quickly glanced in your direction. “Are you feeling alright?”
You silently shook your head, groaning a bit when the motion caused your nausea to come back. A rustling noise came from the backseat before Jessica handed you a plastic bag.
“Always prepared,” Angela quipped with a sheepish smile.
You leaned your head back against the headrest as the car started moving. “Thank god for that.”
Angela dropped Jessica off first, considering her house was the closest of the two. However, when she started turning around in the driveway, you realized that you shouldn’t go back to your house like this. You were sure that your house would be in an uproar if you arrived home close to being blackout drunk, and in the spur of the moment, you made an alternative decision.
“Ange,” you started, still hesitant about the choice. “Do you mind driving me to Edward’s place?”
She stopped mid-turn, raising an eyebrow at you. “Are you sure? I don’t know…”
“I don’t want to go home like this.” Seeing she was still not convinced, you added, “And I know he wouldn’t do anything. I’ll even call him to make sure it’s alright.”
She took some time to contemplate before she relented and nodded. You pulled out your phone and called Edward, already having him on your speed dial. It only rang once before he picked up.
“Is something wrong?” His voice seemed erratic, and you could only imagine what was running through his head. You had never once called him at this hour of the night.
“No,” you assured him, “I just wanted to know if it was alright if Ange drove me to your house. We were…out. I don’t want to go home.”
The silence signaled that he had the whole situation figured out. It wouldn’t be hard, considering your slurred speech. His lack of response started to create dread within you. Was he upset? How could he be upset with you for having fun?
“Do you need me to get anything for you? How are you feeling?” But he wasn’t upset. His voice was tender and soft as he asked.
You let out a small sigh of relief. “No, you don’t need to get anything. I’ll feel better when I see you. Ange is driving me there now.”
“I’ll meet you both at the end of the driveway and drive you the rest of the way.”
“That’s probably for the best.” You were about to hang up before you tacked on, “Thank you for this. I love you.”
He let out a light-hearted chuckle on the other end. “Anytime. I love you too.”
Your head felt airy when you hung up your phone, holding it to your chest with a dopey grin. The car started moving again, slowly inching towards the road.
Finally, Angela spoke up. “I’m taking it I can drive you over there?”
“Yeah, he’ll meet us at the end of the driveway. Oh, take a left here.”
Angela heeded your directions, and you couldn’t miss the smile on her face. “I’m glad you have him. You practically light up just by talking to him on the phone.”
You sheepishly put your hands up to obscure your face. You were sure you still looked like someone in an ad for a dating app with how wide your grin was. It wasn’t anything that could be helped, though. Edward always had that effect on you.
You continued to give directions (the best you could, considering how drunk you were), and after only a few wrong turns, you managed to pull up to the Cullens’ driveway, where Edward’s silver Volvo sat waiting for you like a carriage. He wasted no time coming to your door and helping you out into the cold night, thanking Angela profusely.
“Just make sure she’s sober enough for our brunch tomorrow, or Jessica will kill me,” Angela pleaded through her open window.
You gave her a weak thumbs up with the arm that wasn’t clutching Edward’s middle for dear life. With that, she seemed assured enough to drive back onto the road and into the night.
Lowering yourself into the Volvo, you looked at Edward with a smile, “You’re my knight in shining armor.”
“I would give that honor to Angela since she got you here safely, but I’ll settle for being your prince,” he answered cheekily. He kissed the tip of your nose as he leaned over to buckle your seatbelt.
You snorted and swatted him on the shoulder. “Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. You’re making me want to take back all the nice things I was going to say about you.”
“I could drive you home inste–”
“No! Nope, you’re absolutely the best anyone could ask for. Just get in here and drive so I can sleep.”
He laughed and got into the driver’s side of the car. The short ride back up to the Cullens’ house was long enough that you started to nod off, so when the car stopped, you didn’t even want to get up.
Edward opened the door for you, and he effortlessly scooped you into his arms when he saw your drowsiness. “You’re acting like a cranky child. You know that, right?”
“Mmm,” you muttered, hiding your face in the crook of his neck. “Don’t care.”
“I don’t even want to imagine your headache tomorrow morning.”
At this point, his amused words fell on mostly deaf ears as you fell deeper asleep in his arms. You didn’t even register how fast he had you into bed, with mere seconds passing before you were safely tucked away under the covers.
He was just about to leave to get you a glass of water when you clutched his shirt sleeve. “Don’t go.”
“I won’t be long. I promise.”
“You better,” you mumbled, reluctantly letting go. It was always interesting that he would let you hold him still, and he didn’t just break free from your grasp. He could do it easily enough no matter how hard you held on, but nevertheless, he would always stay until you let go.
Edward was only gone for the time it took you to blink, and he was back in the room, setting down the glass of water and a bottle of over-the-counter pain medication on the nightstand beside you. “I always keep my promises.”
“Yeah, just shut up and cuddle.” You pulled your arms out from under the comforter to make grabby hands at him. You were sure you looked ridiculous, but you couldn’t be bothered at that moment. Honestly, it was a miracle you were still awake and coherent.
He didn’t protest or say anything else, aside from laughing a bit, and crawled into the bed beside you. He made sure to lay above the comforter in the hopes that it would keep him from making you too cold throughout the night. You draped your arm over his middle and latched onto him before immediately falling asleep.
And he was right. Your headache the following day was truly awful. It had to have been the headache from hell because you could hear everything as soon as you woke up. And all that noise hurt worse than anything you’d felt in a long time.
He noticed as soon as you stirred in your sleep, noting the scrunched up expression on your face. “What’s wrong, love?”
“Headache,” you rasped out. You didn’t realize how dry your mouth was until you tried to talk. Before you could ask, Edward handed you the glass of water he had prepared the night before. The cool liquid soothed your throat instantly. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. And here, take some of these.” He gently laid two pills into your hand. “Those should help with the headache.”
You quickly took them, grimacing once they were down. “I don’t think I want to get out of bed at all.” You reached across him to set the glass back on the nightstand before deciding that you’d like to stay like that, so you laid across him lazily. “Everything hurts.”
“Too much alcohol will do that,” he teased, rubbing your temples with his cold fingers. The relief was instant, and he had a self-satisfied smirk on his face after your hum of approval. “You do remember that you have brunch with Angela and Jessica?”
You groaned and turned over onto your back, turning your face towards him. “I don’t want to go. Jessica’s the one that dragged me out last night.”
“I don’t think it’s fair to blame her for how drunk you got.”
You frowned but conceded, “No…it’s not. But I still don’t want to go.”
“Angela was adamant about me getting you to that brunch.” When he still hadn’t convinced you, he added, “I can drive you there.”
“In the Volvo?”
“Yes, in the Volvo.”
You playfully pretended to think about it. “Hmm…so you’re telling me I get to spend extra time with you and show up in an expensive car? I don’t know…”
“Come on,” he chuckled, picking you up as he escaped from the warm confines of the bed. You giggled as his cold hands held your waist, and he set you down in front of the dresser that had some of your clothes in it. “Get dressed, so I don’t have those two angry with me.”
You laughed even harder at that statement. “You’re afraid of Angela and Jessica? You?”
“Yes,” he answered with finality. “They’re intimidating.”
You both were now laughing before Edward finally calmed down enough to leave the room, allowing you to change. You opened a drawer of the dresser, your drawer, and picked out the outfit you wanted to wear for the day. Your whole body still felt like you’d gotten hit by a truck, but you couldn’t wipe the smile off your face. Even when you overdid it, Edward was always right there by your side. Through thick or thin, he was there. How had you gotten so lucky?
The honk of the Volvo’s honk snapped you out of your daze, and you looked out the window to see Edward leaning against the car. When he saw you through the window, he motioned towards the car as though it were a carriage. You rolled your eyes and made your way downstairs, endlessly happy. Edward truly was your prince, although getting you to admit it to him would take a bit more work.
Hey!! I love your little series for Paul and while we wait for the next part, i wanted to request for Carlisle. Where his human girlfriend wants to have a baby before being turn, and yes she saw everything bella went through but she's sure she can make it and she trust carlisle to turn her in time. But of course at first he say no, and so they fight a lot about it.... Basically a lot of angst but with fluffy happy ending (with said baby being born)
Thank you so much! I’m still working on my Paul series so stay tuned. I might have to go binge Twilight now after writing this LMAO. And yes I agree on Carlisle’s view point. He’s very empathetic but stands strong with his boundaries. I did NOT name the baby because I wouldn’t know what to name it and I wouldn’t want you guys to hate it so… But nonetheless… enjoy this piece :) I so so so appreciate requests!
Tap. Tap. Tap.
I sighed, setting down my pregnancy test onto my marble countertop.
Negative.
It was useless anyways… being in a room full of vampires all the time, someone was bound to know if I was pregnant before I would anyway. I felt tears run down my face, but I wasn’t sure what kind of tears they were. Was it sad tears? Sadness from not achieving a desired outcome no matter how dangerous and deadly it could be? Was it relief? Relieved that I hadn’t needed to break the news to anyone, no anxiety or dire plans and conversations need to be made? Or hope? Hope that I had more time to figure out what I needed to do and properly take the steps to finally getting my eternal happiness.
Maybe it was all of those things… all the Cullen’s talked about vampires having heighten emotions, yet I was as human as it got and still felt all these emotions flooding me all the time, drowning me in confusion and chaos throughout the days. Sometimes I thought it was a curse, I’ve been cursed with the hope of having what Bella and Edward have. What they achieved to do, to have both a family and an eternity with each other. Eternal peace. Eternal happiness.
What if I didn’t get what they have… I have spent many hours assessing the possible outcomes of my actions. And Ive come to the conclusion that there were three possible outcomes.
First outcome….end up like Edward and Bella. Of course, enduring painful weeks growing my baby, and chancing a rather probable death that will be agonizing and traumatic for everyone. But ending up as a mother, with a beautiful baby of my own and husband. With an eternity to spend with them as they experience the ever changing world together.
Second outcome….end up like Rosalie and Emmett. Turned with the eternity of each other, however also an eternity of knowing I will never be able to experience being a mother. Never to experience building a true family with the love of my life, creating a perfect version of myself and my eternal partner. Like a shadow of despair forever haunting me.
Final outcome…. death. Whether having the baby and dying for good, with not being turned. Or whether I die from my body giving out during the pregnancy. Leaving Carlisle and his family with a hole in their heart, and leaving him with the guilt and pain of our consequences.
Although each outcome was morbidity terrifying in there own way, I just knew if I never tried to have a baby, if I just lived my life without knowing the possibilities I have given up, it would be worse then death. It would be worse not knowing what could have been, and what life I could’ve brought into the world.
However the hardest part wasn’t deciding what the outcomes of having a baby were, whether I was choosing life or death, whether I’d be putting my entire family in danger, hell… having the baby probably wouldn’t be the hardest part either.
It would be Carlisle’s support.
He was a very giving man, very generous and kind. But he had very strong morals, and it took a lot for him to even consider entertaining a relationship with me considering I was a human and he was a vampire. He thought that I deserved a normal happy human life, with another human, with human babies and human problems like mortgages and taxes. But like Bella, I was very stubborn and knew what I wanted.
But nonetheless, this would be a whole other level of fights and long conversations ending with tears and heartbreak. I knew he felt sorrowful not being able to give me human children, I mean I was with him before Edward and Bella even met. We saw them go through almost everything we went through as two different people.
Then Bella got pregnant…
I would never forget the day we all found out, the weeks of anxiety and anger that echoed off the walls of our house for what felt like years. The bruises and broken ribs Carlisle had to fix and the blood we had to ration during the tough times. But also, the joy and excitement Bella had. Even as she was looking death in the face and spending day after day in pain, she was never scared. She was so hopeful and sure that everything would work out.
And she was right.
Amazingly, everything worked out for her in the end. She got her beautiful Renesmee, and her husband right along with her. Sure we had to go through the fits of the Volturi, but in the end it all worked out.
This sparked conversations and arguments between Carlisle and myself, many days and nights where I slept alone, sometimes in tears. I had Rosalie’s support naturally, I knew where her heart lied and it wasn’t necessarily with my happiness, but I knew if I ever were to meet death, my baby would be in safe hands.
Then there was Bella herself, who I also had the support of. Considering she went through the situation herself, with barely any support or knowledge of what could happen. She had a few conversations and advice for me and agreed I should try if I was able to accept the possible consequences.
However, Carlisle and his sons had the same viewpoint as him. They didn’t see the need to risk Carlisle’s eternal happiness with me for a small chance of having a baby. Alice too, was iffy on the situation. She saw the future and saw many different outcomes, some even including my own death.
Anyways, I simply tossed the negative test in the trash without a second look. As I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, I walked out of my room that was in my own house separate from Carlisle’s house. I barely came here, it was tiny and already paid off. But it still came in handy when I was just having human days and needed privacy. Or time to just think and be human without my adopted children or boyfriend being concerned. I was thinking I was pregnant, so I took a few days to myself at my house with a pregnancy test just in case.
But humans get old, and in the back of my mind I knew that I was running out of time for children. And I knew that turning me was in the back of Carlisle’s mind. We talked about it, a lot. And he did agree to it, but the problem was that I wanted to try for a baby before that happened. He knew that, everyone else knew it, it was just something I didn’t want to let go. Of course he opted for me to have a baby with another human or a sperm donor, caring more about my health and safety then blood relation. I mean none of his children now are related to him blood wise so obviously it wasn’t a problem for him.
But he knew that wasn’t going to work for me. But I know he still hoped I would give it up and just make peace with it.
Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.
I felt my phone vibrating and dancing slightly on my dresser by my bed. I walked over to it and picked it up, already having a feeling of who it was.
“Hello?” I answered sweetly over the phone, which I was met with that familiar voice. “Y/n, I was missing your voice, I am guessing you are at your home. Is everything alright?” I heard Carlisle question gently. “Oh yeah, I was just taking out the trash and making sure this house is still standing.” I half joked, hoping to sway him into thinking everything really was alright.
“Well, Alice and I really miss you. I hope you plan on coming home eventually.” He teased, in which my heart dropped. “Yes of course, I’ll be there shortly. Just have to sort the mail and I’ll be done.” I lied, partly, he didn’t need to know I did that two days ago. “Okay. I love you Y/N, drive safe.” He replied, as I agreed and said the I love you too and goodbye before hanging up.
Well, Alice and I really miss you.
Shit. He knows. Carlisle was always the one for gentleness. That was his way of saying I know what you’re really doing at the house, without actually saying it. I mentally scold Alice, you would think a girl would have another girls back. But considering she doesn’t agree with me having Carlisle’s baby, and then having a vision of me taking a pregnancy test doesn’t really surprise me she would tell him.
Jokes on him though, the test was negative so whatever panic and worry he’s going through right now will shortly be ended when I get to the house. But this was too quick for Alice to have a vision just moments after I took the test. He must have been asking her to look out for me. Which granted, was sneaky, but seemed to have been a page he took out of Edward’s book. Apples and trees one would assume.
****
I sighed, taking my car keys out of the ignition and took a deep breath.
Keep the tears in. Don’t let it show. You have psychic children who can read your thoughts and emotions.
I somewhat laugh at that thought, knowing I couldn’t say it aloud thanks to their super hearing, I smiled to myself loving my dysfunctional family even when the odds aren’t in my favor and they turn against me for their adopted father.
Once I step inside I feel my heart rise, it was off. All the children are in the room, sitting down looking worried. I say children as if they aren’t old enough to be my ancestors, but still. Surely Alice didn’t tell the entire family what’s going on in my uterus. Which, as a matter of fact, wasn’t much of her business to begin with.
“Y/n dear, won’t you come with me.” My love, Carlisle greeted, opening his arm out in a gesturing way. All his children eyeing me quietly, they sat so still like stone statues. Something was definitely off.
“Is everything okay? You guys look spooked.” I questioned, looking at Edward and Bella, who were the only relaxed ones there. “Where’s Nessie?” I look to Bella. “She’s with Jake. They are doing some painting class on the Res today. They’ll be back later.” Bella smiled, looking towards Edward with that look she’s had ever since he brought her home.
“I think we should just get to the point.” Rosalie anxiously interrupted sharply, before fixing her posture and smiling softly to try and recover from her abrupt remark. “Rose.” Edward cut off, scolding a little at her, which she didn’t even bother to look back at him.
“Get to what point?” I softly asked, more worried that this was more then just one of Alice’s visions of me. Was he kicking me out? Did something happen with the Wolves? Well no, not if Nessie was on the Res. Certainly Edward wouldn’t let that stand.
“Well, is there perhaps anything you would like to share before we begin?” Carlisle questioned calmly, with a soft face, and gentle eyes, no accusing stares or anger from him. So I wasn’t in trouble, and it most likely was about the test I took this morning. But I didn’t think this involved a family meeting, but then again with their super hearing I suppose there wasn’t any point for privacy anyhow.
“I took a pregnancy test. But it was negative. I’m sorry if I scared you guys.” I half apologized, however had a bit of fire in my tone. It wasn’t something I was exactly proud to spit out in front of my boyfriends children which half of, consisted of males. But the faces in the room looked confused, and twisted with uncertainty.
Oops. Maybe this isn’t what that was about.
Well that’s embarrassing, but I seriously couldn’t have thought of anything else I could have done to be trialed against the family like this.
“But that’s not possible. I thought you said-“
“Rose.” Emmett cut her off, as they all looked to Alice and Carlisle.
“My visions are from the future, it could still be too early for a positive test.” Alice defensively stated, taking a closer step to me.
“Yeah but we don’t know if it would even show up. I didn’t take one when I was pregnant with Renesmee.” Bella said across from the couch next to Edward, who was staring at me, no doubt reading my mind.
“Is this possible?” Rosalie asked, a glint of hope in her eyes as she looked to Carlisle.
“I don’t sense a heartbeat”
“It takes 4 weeks for a heartbeat”
“Again. Future.”
“She truly didn’t know. She’s not lying about the test”
“What part of future do you not get?”
“We still got time if we caught it ea-“
“That’s NOT your choice.”
“Woah. Everyone. Please does anyone care to fill me in?” I exclaim, feeling overwhelmed by all the familiar voices talking at once. They all suddenly go dead silent, looking over at their adoptive dad for permission.
I looked over at Carlisle who looks pained, and worried. But he also manages to look calm and lovingly at me. “Y/n my love, this morning Alice had a vision. You were pregnant, and you decided to keep it.” He carefully chose his words.
“Pregnant?” I choked out, suddenly feeling very cold and nauseous. However, I also felt like I could do a thousand cartwheels of joy. Rosalie stepped up and was at my side in seconds, grasping my shoulder gently. “Here, sit down.” She guided me back down to where she was previously sitting.
“Pregnant?” I whispered to myself again, not really processing what was going on around me. “That we know of, you could not be pregnant right now. There’s one way to know for sure though.” Carlisle explained, referring to the ultrasound machine that still lied up in the room where Bella spent a lot of time in when she was pregnant.
“Do you want to go see your baby?” Rosalie smiled, excitedly rubbing up and down my arms gently. “Rose we don’t know yet.” Edward replied, a hand on Bella’s shoulder. “Oh I know she is, I can tell. She’s glowing.” Rosalie snapped back joyfully, still smiling at me with hope.
And soon enough, it was Carlisle and I, in the empty room, with dead silence as he set up the machine. Emmett had to practically pry Rosalie from the room, and she was undoubtedly near by the closed door outside the room, listening to every word.
“You don’t seem excited.” I carefully pressed, acknowledging his nervousness. “I could have just potentially killed the only woman I’ve ever loved.” Carlisle replied, but not in a harsh way with any malice tone towards me, but rather himself.
“There is still a chance I’ll be fine. Bella made it, and we have more knowledge now.” I tried to reassure. But he didn’t seem to pay much attention to my words. “Y/n, love, nothing is worth risking your life to me. Nothing.” He grabbed a bottle that resembled gel.
“This might be cold.”
I nodded, my shirt already lifted up, as I laid down on the chair. “I do hope, I could talk to you into looking towards alternative choices. If you are pregnant.” He spoke, as his eyes were glued to the screen as he pressed slightly on my stomach with the camera.
“I can’t believe you.” I angrily stated, looking at the gray and white screen, trying to soak up the moment and not let Carlisle dampen my hope. It didn’t help I didn’t really know what I was looking at, the only ever time I saw one of these was when Bella was pregnant. I looked up at Carlisle, hoping I could find some sort of answer on his face.
“Dammit.” I heard him whisper. Before lifting up the piece of plastic on my belly and setting it down, shutting his eyes. I felt happiness surge me, warming me up from head to toe.
I was going to be a mother.
“By the looks of it, you are about two-three weeks pregnant.” He quietly said, not making eye contact with me. His hands were holding the end of the machine in a deadly grip. I reached over and grabbed one of his hands, he instantly relaxed his hand and let me hold it. I looked up at him and smiled happily, waiting for him to look at me back.
“It’s okay. I know we can do this, we are going to have a baby. Your going to be a dad, after all these years.” I reminded him, suddenly realizing how Bella was so happy and optimistic. I was bringing a life into this world, I was going to give Carlisle a baby after centuries of him never thinking he would be a biological father.
“I know you are happy Y/n, but I don’t want you to have to go through what Bella did knowing that I did this to you. And we barely got to Bella in time, what if it doesn’t work? I would have killed you. I can’t bare living eternity knowing I did that to you.”
“You didn’t do anything Carlisle, I chose this. I know what I’m getting myself into, I was there with Bella. And this time we don’t have to worry about facing a war with the wolves or the Volturi. We don’t have to worry about getting blood, we can do this. I know you’re scared, but I’m not. I have never felt so happy and hopeful, I know it won’t be easy but look at Edward and Bella, they have a daughter, and we could have that too.”
He looks down at me, just staring at me with a sorrowful gaze. It was just silence between us for a few moments, it looked as if he wanted to say a million things, but then thought against it. He held onto my hand, then rested my own hand on my stomach before letting it go.
“I’m not going to tell you what to do with your own body. But I don’t support this decision y/n.” And with that, he walked out of the room. Leaving the door open, and leaving me in quiet thoughts by myself. I looked down at my stomach where my baby was growing, I smiled happily to myself,
My baby.
It felt so surreal and powerful, knowing I had Carlisle’s baby inside me, a vampires baby. I knew I should feel at least a little bit scared, knowing the bruising and broken bones that were about to come, but I couldn’t help but not fear it even a little bit. I fought so hard for this baby and I knew I could handle it, I had Bella and Rosalie, and that’s more support then Bella ever had when she was pregnant herself.
“Are you okay?”
I turned my head to the sweet voice that broke the silent room. It was Rose, her beautiful blonde hair appearing from the door. She had a smile on her face, and glowing eyes of joy. And behind her stood Bella, her tiny frame almost impossible to see behind Rosalie. I smiled, nodding to the two vampires, and gesturing them to come in.
“I guess it’s time to pick some names.” Bella responded, light heartedly trying to soften the mood. “I hope it’s another girl.” Rosalie said, resting a soft hand on my shoulder, glancing at the now turned off machine. “Carlisle will come around, he may not support your decision… but he will always support you. He loves you, we all have seen it.” Rosalie reassures, lifting me up slightly.
“Now, what would you like to eat?”
*****
It wasn’t long before my stomach started to swell up. Bella was right, it was not a human pregnancy, it was a lot faster. I looked about 6 months pregnant, my belly was slightly bruised like Bella’s was, but I had been on blood supplements sooner then she had so it was much easier.
Rosalie and I were shopping almost everyday for baby clothes until I started getting really big. Then we opted for online shopping, and eventually Alice came around and started being more involved, claiming if the baby was going to be born then it was going to be born into fashion properly.
Jasper and Emmett were betting on the baby’s gender, Jasper and Edward thought it was a boy and Emmett was on team girl with Rosalie and Alice. They have all voted on names and clothes, like a regular normal family. Nessie was excited to get a aunt/uncle however, for her sake we just said cousin, no need for technicalities.
Then there was Carlisle, who like Rosalie said, did come around. He was always by my side, asking me a thousand questions and making sure I was comfortable, not too hot or cold, if I was hungry, if I was tired, if the baby was kicking, etc.
He was even dare I say it….excited. He told a few of his close friends about the baby and would go upstairs with me everyday to get ultrasound pictures of the baby and tape them in a photo album book he had. His hands would always be gently around my belly or on my hand, asking me how I felt and how the baby felt. Carlisle also had everything planned out and written down, he was very determined for everything to go smoothly and as easy as possible.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a broken rib here and there, and it did hurt. My stomach felt like it would burst at times, the bruised skin needed ice packs and heating pads at times. But it was a magical feeling, I knew I was doing something incredible and almost impossible.
And I knew I was getting close to the due date, we estimated it with the help of a Bella’s pregnancy even though her birth was an emergency. I wasn’t scared, or nervous. I knew that what was meant to be would be and that panicking would solve nothing or help anything. I did sense Carlisle’s nervousness though, and we had many conversations the closer it got to birth, he tried to stay strong and calm collected for my own sake, but there wasn’t a need. I had everything I wanted.
Alice had looked at my future numerous of times, and the closer the date came, the more visions she got of me living and surviving the birth, then being turned into a vampire. She of course, along with Edward, were the only two that knew the baby’s gender. I voted for it to be a surprise, and Carlisle agreed with it.
Rosalie and Alice had renovated one of the spare rooms into a nursery, using gray since it was a neutral color and there was no spoilers before I had the baby. They were both so excited, Rosalie especially. And Bella put together everything I would need for the baby, and prepped multiple bags and shelves with baby supplies and toddler stuff since my baby would not stay a baby for very long.
Emmett and Jasper even built a little play ground out in the back of the woods for Renesmee and my baby, which certainly made Nessie happy. And Edward would come by and sit with me, telling me what if felt like to read by baby’s mind. Reminiscing when it was Bella and his baby and what it was like to read his baby’s thoughts.
Everything was perfect, it couldn’t have been better.
****
Today was the day. I was going to give birth to my miracle baby, Carlisle had did the measurements and all the tests and scans and the baby was ready to come out. And fingers crossed, that it would go a lot more smoothly then Bella’s birth.
Everyone was nervous and jittery, Jasper had me questioning if he was using his mojo on me or Carlisle, probably both. But everything was set and most the family was sitting in the room with us. It was very quite and very calm, they all gave reassuring looks and feedback during the set up of the room. Carlisle was just done setting everything up then quietly looked my way.
“Are you okay?” He stated,
“If this-“
“When” I cut my lover off, looking up at him and holding his hand confidently before finishing.
“When this works out, yes, I know this is my last moment as a human. You will use the morphine, and anesthesia to put me out and then perform the C section, then turn me once the baby is out. It’s fine, you’ve told me a million of times. I’m ready.”
He looked down lovingly at me and gently rested his hand on my abnormally swollen belly. Taking in the last few moments with his human girlfriend before our baby was brought into the world.
“Are you ready?” I questioned, raising my eyebrows playfully. He smiled, before stroking my head with his icy cold hand. “Ready as I can be.” I heard his voice as he walked behind me to the machines.
I looked up at Rosalie and Bella, who were in the chairs next to me, while Alice and Edward stood behind me with Carlisle. They all looked very intense and stiff. “Alright guys. I guess I’ll see you on the other side. Take lots of pictures of my baby, Rose, make sure you share.” I joked, getting a few laughs out of my soon-to-be vampire family. Hoping to lighten the mood before I get put out.
I felt Carlisle’s hand on my shoulder, slowly guiding me to lay down on the table I was sat on. I looked up at the white ceiling, taking in the last few seconds of my humanity. I rose my hands and lifted my chin to take one last look of my pregnant belly, and felt Carlisle inject a cold fluid in my IV.
I turned my head to the side to look at him, he had one hand out, which was holding my closest hand. I didn’t even notice when he went to grab it. Then he took one last look at me, and whispered something. I couldn’t seem to catch what it was, already feeling the effects of the anesthesia.
I laid my head back on the table and noticed the ceiling getting darker, and darker. I also felt the sleepy euphoria take over my body. Then I closed my eyes and was met with darkness, my last thought of a face that I knew all too well.
Carlisle.
“I love you Carlisle.” I managed to get out before the darkness consumed me.
****
I woke up, suddenly conscious. However, it was odd. I didn’t feel groggy, or stiff. I felt alive, fresh, if you will. I felt as if I could hear every speck of dust fall inside the room I was in.
Room.
I looked around, it was a room I was unfamiliar with. It was a room with four pastel blue walls decorated with shelves full of wooden animals and plastic toys. Besides me was an old fashion white crib, with distrusted blue blankets. I was lying on a bed that looked as if was brand new, with freshly new sheets that smelt of soap and linen. Then I heard a swift sound of someone entering the room.
“Y/n. You’re awake.”
I looked up at my love, Carlisle, who had a biggest smile on his face and looked as if he would start crying. I studied him harder, I could see every piece of blonde hair on his head and every crease in his clothes. “Wow.” Was all I mustered out, soaking up the newly senses of being a vampire.
He chuckled, taking a step towards me and extending his hand. I looked down at it and could smell something, it was a mix of daisies and soap. I could also sense the warmth from it. “You have been holding the baby.” I almost cried out, looking around the room once more. Which was obviously the nursery, covered in blue.
“I’m gonna take a wild guess and say it’s a boy.” I finished, motioning quite fast around room. In which he laughed again, nodding as he took his hand in line. “How did you know.” He said before He wrapped me into a hug, in which I succeeded in not crushing him in half, which was something Bella managed to remind me about before I went under.
“I want to see him. Please.”
Carlisle looked down at me and then motioned something in the room beside us. I didn’t seem to notice it before, but now that I did I felt like a fire had arisen up my throat. I felt like tearing it to pieces and getting inside of it. It was a fridge, and I didn’t need to open it to know it was full of blood.
“Ladies first.” I heard him say, as milliseconds went by and almost ripped the door straight off the hinges and tore into a bag. It tasted amazing, to say at the least but I could tell it was animal blood. Which was good enough for me, the sooner I finished this bag the sooner I could hold my son for the first time.
“I figured you’d want to see the baby as soon as you could.” Carlisle said, gently closing the fridge behind me, motioning towards the fridge. “But after you do, we can go out and hunt down some fresh blood.” He continued, as he started leading me out the door. “How is he?” I asked, referring to my baby, looking around the halls that seemed totally different then before. I could see every speckle on the wall and hear every creak underneath our feet that I never heard before. “Great, it’s only been two days. Rosalie is soaking up his attention right now.”
We walked downstairs into the living room where I saw all my family sitting around a tiny wrapped up figure in Rosalie’s arms. They all looked at me and a few smiled while Emmett greeted me. “Hey y/n, good news, definitely not the milk man’s baby.” While Bella punched his side playfully. A few laughs came out from Jasper and Edward.
“Oh good, had me worried there for a minute. It’s not like it was an abnormal pregnancy.” I joked back, making my way towards the blue ball of blanket. Rosalie looked up to me and then lifted the baby towards me, laying him gently in my arms. I was taken aback in shock. The baby was quite literally a spitting image of Carlisle, from his hair to his cheek bones, I didn’t see a hint of my genes in him.
“Wow. Talk about Carlisle.” I concurred, cradling my baby in my arms. He was perfect, he had his tiny little eyes closed, with his beautiful little puffy cheeks, and his bleach blonde hair that was more like fuzz then anything. I could feel his warmth seep into my arms and chest, he definitely had human in him. But that’s about the only thing he seemed to get from me.
I looked up at Carlisle who was watching me and our baby. “I told you I could do it.” I teased, taking my eyes back onto my baby. Who just started to open his eyes. He cooed, reaching up towards me with a faint smile. I looked down giggling a bit, rocking him.
“Why hello love, welcome to the world.”
And in that moment, I knew I had everything I could ever have.
Hey! I really really love your blog! If I may request, during downtime, how would the members of the inner circle react to find the Inquisitor drawing/sketching them?
“Companions react to Inquisitor drawing/sketching them”
After our *cough* little thing with Bull, let’s have some fluff, shall we? Thank you anon for the ask!
-Lord Lex
Cullen
“You did this? It’s certainly…it’s…how did you even…it’s amazing.”
-So surprised, no words. It makes him feel a little special that you’d choose to sketch him but also very embarrassed. In return, he tries drawing you. Might not be as good and there are a few rough sketches that were thrown in the fire, but he wanted to return the favor.
Josephine
“Oh! Look at the detail and the softness! I wouldn’t have even thought it was me from how stunning it is!”
-Absolutely gushing over it. Josey’s always had a fascination for the arts and to be the subject of the piece from someone close to her? Adores it, even asks to keep it. She has it tucked away in one of her favorite books. Will always compliment your art even when talking to dignitaries.
Leliana
“I commend you on your artistic talent. Though, I’d ask you not to sketch me. Perhaps one of the ravens would make better practice?”
-Like Josephine, Leliana has an eye for art. She loves looking at the little details in your sketches and finds it a surprise that her face is amongst the papers. As much as she appreciates it, she’d rather her face remain a secret. She is your spy master, after all. Though, if she becomes Divine, she keeps the sketch as one of her favorite pieces of her.
Vivienne
“Darling, as much as I’d like to say you're wasting your talents by leading the Inquisition instead of honing your skills, you are equally talented in both. Most usually fail to make me look this stunning.”
-It might not show on her face or in her words but she loves it. Several times people have been commissioned to paint her yet none come even close to your level of detail. More points if it’s of her smiling or laughing, the lines on her face as well as the wrinkle around her eyes gives her a sense of…normalcy. If she becomes Divine, she commissions you to do her portrait, no one else.
Varric
“You drew me? I think that’s gotta be one of the scariest pieces of your art I’ve ever seen! When you're done, can I keep it?”
-Though it doesn’t sound like it, he brags about it constantly. Even when he’s making fun of his slightly crooked nose or how his eyes might seem smaller than other dwarves, he’s complimenting the skill you put into the very minute details of his face. Varric will try to pay you for it even if you refuse, later trying to commission a drawing of Hawke when they come around.
Cole
“Oh, it’s me! Not really, but it’s Cole. But you’re trying to draw me…I can still remember his face, then.”
-He’ll stare at it for hours, his shoulders down. It’s been sometime since he’d been able to see his own face, forgetting that he even had a face. To see you draw that face, the real Cole, just from looking at him makes him happy. Will ask to look at it every now and then, just to make sure it’s still the same.
Solas
“I must say, you are quite talented and steady with your hands. It does allow others to see how the artist sees. You certainly make me seem…at peace.”
-From one artist to another, he gives you high compliments with very few complaints. It is unusual to see him drawn in such a way since he’s so used to seeing only the mosaics. He meant to get rid of it when he left the Inquisition, but just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
Cassandra
“Inquisitor, though your craft is very beautiful and I admire how you can make these pieces, I must ask you not to sketch me.”
-Don’t get her wrong, she loves seeing your sketches but it’s mostly out of formality (and somewhat embarrassment) that she asks not to be your subject. If she becomes Divine, it’s one of the only pieces she prefers over the paintings. Though she does ask you, if you have the time, to draw something for her. When you give her a perfect picture of her brother and her, it’s one of the few times she truly hugs you.
The Iron Bull
“Holy shit. I’m alright when it comes to sketching, but you make it look pretty damn easy while so complicated! You even got my scars and the detail on my patch! Damn, boss!”
-Bull is used to doing quick sketches, usually of small details to make sure he could track someone or to remember something easier. Never had he really seen himself drawn so picture perfect that it completely baffles him. He looks at all the details with a smile on his face.
Dorian
“I can’t believe you managed to get my good side! In all honesty, though, this is remarkable. And not just because it’s me.”
-He had studied some art pieces before and never really found any he liked, but he has now found one of his favorite artists. Constantly asks if you’ve done any new pieces just so he can look at the heart that goes into them. Ask if you could teach him to sketch as such so that he can add better drawings to his research notes.
Sera
“What the fuck! That’s me! How the fuck! How did you do this! You even got my eyes to be lined up! How the hell did you do that?!”
-We all know Sera’s drawing style. She keeps saying the same things over and over again because she’s at a loss for words. Except for cuss words. Along with the rooftop hangouts, she insists that you two just draw together sometimes. Some of the goofiest drawings come from these times, especially one of a cartoonish Coryshit falling from a very detailed tower.
A little speech bubble near it says “Oh shit, I shat myself!”
Blackwall
“I…I’m honored to be one of your subjects. Not to blow my own horn, but this looks stunning. You really are something special, hm?”
-Blackwall has done a lot of sketching himself and finds your art a breath of fresh air. Other than looking at bits and pieces of his reflection, he usually tries to avoid seeing himself. So when he sees your drawing of him, he almost doesn’t recognize himself. You both trade sketches of each other just for fun and even sketch together.
Just us - Three
(Felix Volturi x reader)
Tumblr media
I‘ve decided to write this into a whole series, because this story has been on my mind for a while now. The parts are going to be published slowly, it always takes me awhile, but as I said before they all have a mostly ‚closed‘ ending so it’s still satisfying to read. Feedback is always greatly appreciated!
Parts: 1 2 3 4 5
Masterlist
Description: Bella invites you to her wedding and it unfolds a whole lot of alterations.
2734 words
“Oh my god, no way!”, you squealed into your phone, making Bella utter a small ‘ouch’. A few weeks after Felix came back from dealing with the newborn army in Forks, you decided to call Bella while taking a walk around the courtyard, but what you really didn’t expect her to tell you is that she’s engaged. “Yeah I can’t really believe it myself, I just wanted to tell you before the invitation arrived”, she told you in her usual calm voice. “I can’t wait honestly, I’m so happy for you! Do you already have a date?”, you asked excitedly, sitting down on a bench and enjoying the sun. “Yeah we decided on August 13th and will hold the ceremony in the Cullens garden. Do you think you’ll be able to come though?”, Bella asked sounding kinda anxious. “I think I gotta ask, but I mean why not? Everyone still thinks I have an internship here so why shouldn’t I be able to visit. Someone probably has to come with me though, do you think I can bring Felix?”, you asked thoughtful, considering all the possible outcomes bringing him could have.
“Yeah, yeah we already talked about that and decided that’s fine, he just needs to hunt somewhere else”, Bella confirmed and you could hear someone with a male voice say something to her. “Sorry (Y/N) I gotta go, there’s so much to plan you wouldn’t believe it. Anyway, will you let me know if you’re coming?”, Bella asked and you could hear her moving around. “Yeah sure I’ll let you know! Love you”, you answered and after a ‘love you’ from her you hung up the phone. Looking at the clock on top of the tower you saw that it’d be only two more hours until Felix was done with his duty today and you really couldn’t wait to ask him to go with you.
You stayed out in the courtyard enjoying the sunset, but with the dark starting to settle in, there were also more vampires walking around the courtyard. They didn’t get damaged by the sun, but a lot of them - especially the newer ones - didn’t like walking around in the courtyard in Italys summer heat. And even though they were under strict orders not to touch you, you also knew that the control vampires had over their thirst could be easily lost, even by the smallest triggers. You just had to think of Bellas Birthday last year and your feet moved a little faster in the direction of your chambers.
When you made it back and closed the door you released a breath you didn’t know you were holding, but when you turned around you already had the next heart attack incoming, because Felix was standing right behind you. “God, I told you not to do that!”, you complained pressing your hand to your racing heart. “Sorry mia cara, I didn’t mean to, I was just about to go searching for you”, he laughed and picked you up effortlessly so that you hooked your feet behind his back and your hand behind his neck. “I thought I’d make it back before you”, you hummed and pressed a content kiss to his cold lips. “The trial was over faster than we thought, so I rushed back to you, my love”, he smirked and sat you both down on the couch.
“I have some very big news”, you smiled with a giggle making his eyebrows raise in wonder. “Really? Something big happened in the last six hours we didn’t see each other?”, Felix grinned and looks at you. “Yes, Bella called and guess what she told me”, you excitedly changed your position to sitting on your knees. “She finally realized Edward is a failure and broke it off?”, Felix teased you and you playfully hit his chest, not to hard though (remembering what Bella told you about the time she hit Jacob). “No! The exact opposite actually, they’re getting married next month!”, you finally told him, smiling excitedly. His eyes widened and you were kind of proud of yourself for actually being able to surprise the millennia old vampire. “He really got her to agree, huh?”, Felix asked, referring to the time you told him about Edward only being willing to try having sex with Bella if they’d get married.
“Don’t say it like that, you make it sound like he’s forcing her to the altar in chains”, you giggled, “Bella was just worried about people thinking he knocked her up.” That made Felix let out a laugh: “This century is strange.” “Whatsoever, they invited us to come, so…?”, you came to the question you’ve been wanting to ask, hoping he’d say yes. “Really? Mhm…I would have to correspond with the masters, but if they agree I don’t see why not”, he reluctantly answered, making a joyful smile spread across your face. “Will you ask tomorrow?”, you pressed on, scooting closer to him, his hand laying down on your upper thigh.
“Yes, sure I will”, he smiled at how happy you were for your cousin. Simultaneously it made him wonder if you had ever thought about getting married, specifically getting married to him. That thought lingered in his mind, even after you pulled him in a hug and staying close after pulling away. “What is it?”, you asked scanning his face. He let out a huff, always amazed by how easily you could read him. “Nothing, nothing don’t worry”, he tried to shoot down your attempts to find out what was bothering him. No matter how much he loved you, he was scared of overwhelming you by talking about marriage (even though it was something he definitely wanted someday, with you). “I can see something’s wrong love, why won’t you tell me? Is it something bad, did something happen?”, he could see you were getting anxious and he could hear your heartbeat speeding up. “No, no amore it’s not that”, he tried to calm you down, “I…I was just wondering if you had ever thought about getting married.”
You were surprised to be honest, but in retrospect you could have anticipated it. He was very old fashioned and getting married was really important back in his time and with all this marriage talk, why wouldn’t it come up. „Yeah of course, why?“, you wondered, studying his face. „And what are your thoughts on marriage?“, he seemed to be carefully considering what he said, as if not trying to deter you. „Uhm I guess I always thought I would marry one day, committing to one another like that seems romantic. Nothing big though“, was this leading where you thought it was?
„Mhm“, Felix was lost in thought. Ever since being a vampire he didn’t really think about human traditions like marriage, but he knew that back when he was human these values were very important to him (eventhough he didn’t remember much from his former life). So the thought of marrying you appealed to him greatly, making his mate his the human way, he liked that thought.
——————————
„Congrats Bella! I’m so happy for you, you look gorgeous by the way“, you hugged your cousin after you finally got your hands on her at the reception, there were so many people that wanted to congratulate the happy couple. „Thank you, I’m so happy you made it“, she smiled at you, Edward and Felix only standing behind each of you, neither saying anything.
Shortly after that interaction you were pushed aside by the next guests that wanted to get to the couple, so you and Felix made your way over to your seats. You didn’t arrive there though, because a slightly familiar voice interrupted you. „(Y/N) is that you?“, Mike Newton pulled you into a hug before you could react. He was your classmate in highschool, but you always got an odd vibe from him.
„Who would have thought we would see you again? Heard you finished high school in Italy?“, he asked, and you felt Felix hand slide around your waist. „Yeah I did, it’s amazing over there“, you smiled, trying to cut this conversation short. But you were too quick to hope, because now Angela, Jessica and Eric were walking up to you.
„Wow, would you look at that“, Jessica smiled at you, but you could tell she was unhappy that Mike didn’t pay attention to her. Nothing ever changes in Forks, doesn’t it. „It’s nice to see you again (Y/N)“, Angela smiled, and you smiled back, her being the only one of the pack you ever truly liked. „And who might that be?“, Jessica asked curiously, pointing at Felix behind you who had been quiet until now.
„My name is Felix, I’m her partner“, Felix told them with his voice a little deeper than normal and his arm tightened around your waist. „Wow, maybe I should visit Italy if all men look like that“, Jessica laughed, but before the situation became to uncomfortable Alice swooped in and saved the day. „Excuse me, I need to whisk these two away from you for now“, she giggled and lead you away.
„Thanks for saving us Alice“, you laughed when you were out of earshot. „No worries, I know how they can get, you looked really uncomfortable“, she smiled and left you to your own devices again.
You finally settled in your seats, Felix immediately sliding closer with his chair, gripping your thigh with his strong hand. „If that human ever touches you again, he will be my dinner“, he grumbled making you pat his hand. No need to mention that - going by his smirk - Felix noticed right away that his possessive display of jealousy kind of turned you on.
—————————
You have been back in Volterra for almost a week when Felix approached you with an uncertain look on his face after he came back from his guard duty. You were sitting on the couch with your favorite book, and when you noticed his apprehension you put it away to give him your full attention.
„What is it?“, you were concerned, he rarely was unsure about anything. „Am I that easy to read?“, he chuckled and sat next to you, immediately pulling you into his side and giving you a soft kiss. „Only for me“, you grinned and gave him another kiss, before pulling back a little to like at him expectingly.
„I asked Aro for some time off“, he started to tell you what was on his mind, surprising you with the nature of it. „Time off? What for?“, you wondered and took his big cold hand that was playing with the hem of the blanket in yours, trying to give him comfort.
„I though maybe we could…I mean you told me how great you thought the honeymoon Bella and Edward are on is, and I figured even if we didn’t get married we could still get out of here for a while“, he came clean and you were stunned for a second. He surprised you again and again, who would’ve thought he is so thoughtful and sweet. God, you were so in love.
„Just us two?“, you breathed, excited at the prospect of having some real alone time with him. „Yes, if you’re comfortable with it I mean, if you don’t want to that’s-“, you interrupted him immediately, not wanting to entertain any insecurities. „Of course I want to, honestly that sound amazing“, you smiled and laced your hands behind his neck.
„Great“, he seemed to lose all his tension, sinking into your embrace and resting his chin on your head. „Where to were you thinking?“, you asked curiously, thinking about all the possibilities you had. All of the places that were really touristy or populated would probably not be in the race.
„The Volturi have several isolated properties around the world, believe it or not sometimes we do like to travel“, he chuckled, pulling you a little tighter against him, „we could use the one on an island in the Mediterranean Sea or there’s a cabin in the mountains in Switzerland.“ Humming you considered your options, you’ve never really liked beach vacations in the first place and autumn was approaching anyway, so you were leaning towards the mountains.
„Switzerland sounds nice“, you sighed closing your eyes, the affection and proximity of your mate always giving you comfort. Felix grumbled in agreement, and you were already wondering if maybe up in the mountains in a cozy cabin, Felix would feel safe enough to try - sleeping with you that is.
————————
You had left for the cabin the following evening, taking a small private plane and then a car from the airport. You had to travel throughout the night, because it was safe for Felix not to be spotted. When you arrived at the cabin you were in awe. It was really high up, there was snow as far as you could see. Pine trees were all around, only a small, at least a mile long, dirt path marking the way from the street to the cabin.
After Felix had carried your luggage inside, you two spent most of the day lounging around and just enjoying the calm and quiet for now. At some point you had to get up to make yourself dinner though, Felix keeping you company by sitting at the small kitchen island while you were cooking. In the evening you were laying on the couch together, the fireplace keeping you warm and cozy, while Felix was holding you close.
„You know, there’s something I’ve been meaning to do all day“, Felix broke the comfortable silence and sat you both up slowly. You could feel him taking a shaky breath, making you wonder what was happening as he didn’t need to breath after all. You turned around to look at him, the spacious couch allowing you to sit cross-legged and hold his hands still.
„This isn’t as big and pompous as it could be, and I sincerely hope that I know you well enough to be right about you preferring this the small way“, he cleared his throat and you could feel your heart pick up its pace, „I still remember the moment I met your eyes for the first time like it was yesterday, and how I realized that after millennia of being alone in this world I wouldn’t have to be anymore. My love for you is so profound, endless and unconditional and no superficial human tradition could ever capture the lengths I would go for you, but I still want to make you mine in every possible way.“
Your heart was beating so hard the blood was rushing in your ears. He let go of one of your hands and pulled something out of his pant pocket, your mind already making the connection before you fully realize what’s happening. There in his hands is a beautiful but simple ring, and your free hand started shaking, covering your mouth in shock.
„So eventhough there’s no one here to officiate anything, I still want to ask you to marry me right here, right now, just the two of us“, he finished and you were left speechless. Of all the things you were expecting to happen here, this was the last thing you were prepared for.
Not quite finding your voice yet you nodded repeatedly, and some of the tension left your mates body and he smiled. „I need to hear you say it, mia cara“, he smiled lovingly and waited patiently for you to gather yourself. Taking a deep breath you removed the hand from your mouth. „Yes“, you answered with a small voice, „yes of course I’ll marry you.“
Pure unfiltered joy broke out across Felix face. He softly lifted your hand a little, slipping the ring onto your finger. You couldn’t hold back anymore, falling into his arms and burying your head in his neck. „I love you so, so much Felix. This is perfect“, you whispered, knowing he would hear you with his vampire ears and you could feel him pull you in even tighter.
You pulled back a little and he took your face into his hand, softly meeting your lips with his. You still being human meant you had to pull back sooner than you would’ve liked, still needing to breathe. „So this is a honeymoon“, you giggled, Felix just chuckling before pulling you close again.
In the quiet town of Forks, where supernatural beings coexisted with humans, lived a remarkable young woman named (Y/n). She stood tall at 5 feet 11 inches, her fiery red hair cascading down to her knees when left untied. (Y/n) possessed a unique ability - she was a lioness shifter, a powerful combination of grace and strength.
Among the supernatural community, (Y/n) was known as a close friend of the Cullen family, particularly Alice. Having spent countless hours together, they had formed a bond that was unbreakable. (Y/n)'s loyalty and protective nature made her a valuable ally to the Cullens.
One sunny day, the tranquility of Forks was interrupted by the arrival of unexpected guests. The three Volturi kings and their four elite guards had come to check on Edward and Bella's hybrid child, Renesmee. As the Cullens welcomed them into their home, (Y/n) couldn't help but feel a sense of unease in the air.
Curiosity got the better of her, and she excused herself from the polite conversation unfolding inside the Cullens' residence. (Y/n) made her way outside, where she found Renesmee practicing with her weapons. (Y/n) had always believed in being prepared, and she had an impressive arsenal of weapons at her disposal - throwing knives, a crossbow, and two gleaming katanas.
With a smile on her face, (Y/n) approached Nessie, as she was affectionately called. "Hey, Nessie, mind some company?" she asked, her voice filled with warmth.
Nessie's eyes sparkled with excitement as she nodded eagerly. "Of course, (Y/n)! I've been practicing my aim with the crossbow. Want to join me?"
(Y/n) chuckled softly, appreciating Nessie's enthusiasm. "Absolutely, little one. Let's see how much you've improved."
As they stood side by side, (Y/n) watched with pride as Renesmee took aim and expertly shot an arrow, hitting the target with precision. (Y/n) couldn't help but marvel at the child's natural talent and the potential she held within her.
Little did they know, their practice session was about to be interrupted by the arrival of the Volturi. The sound of approaching footsteps caught their attention, and they turned to see Aro, Caius, and Marcus, accompanied by their elite guards.
(Y/n)'s eyes narrowed slightly, her protective instincts kicking in. She positioned herself between the Volturi and Renesmee, ready to defend her friend and the Cullen family if necessary.
With a welcoming smile, Alice stepped forward, greeting the Volturi leaders. "Hello, gentlemen. It's been a while."
Aro's eyes flickered with interest as he scanned the surroundings, his gaze eventually landing on (Y/n). "Ah, (Y/n), the lioness shifter. A pleasure to see you again. I trust you've been well."
(Y/n) nodded politely, her eyes never leaving the Volturi. "Likewise, Aro. But forgive me if I say I'm a bit curious as to why you've paid us a visit."
Aro's smile widened, his tone dripping with charm. "Oh, nothing to worry about, my dear. We merely wanted to ensure the welfare of our little hybrid friend here." He gestured towards Renesmee, who stood close to (Y/n)'s side.
(Y/n)'s grip tightened around the hilt of her katanas, her protective instincts heightened. "Well, I assure you, she is in good hands. We take her safety very seriously."
As the conversation continued, (Y/n) remained vigilant, ready to spring into action if needed. She knew that the Volturi's visit could potentially disrupt the peace they had all worked so hard to maintain. But she was determined to protect her friends and ensure that no harm befell Renesmee.
As the conversation with the Volturi continued, a sudden chill ran through the air. The Cullens and their guests turned their heads to see an unknown vampire approaching, his eyes filled with malice. Without a word, he unleashed a torrent of fire, aiming directly for the twins, Alec and Jane.
Instinct took over (Y/n) as she swiftly shifted into her lioness form, her massive body barreling towards the twins. With a powerful leap, she pushed them out of harm's way just in the nick of time, shielding them from the incoming flames.
The unknown vampire's eyes widened in surprise, momentarily distracted by (Y/n)'s protective act. Seizing the opportunity, (Y/n) sprang towards him, her claws unsheathed, and let out a fierce roar.
The fight that ensued was a whirlwind of strength and agility. The unknown vampire, fueled by his fire power, attempted to strike (Y/n) with waves of flames. But (Y/n)'s shifter abilities allowed her to dodge and weave through the fiery onslaught, her feline grace on full display.
With each swipe of her powerful paws, (Y/n) aimed to disable her opponent. She clawed at his chest, leaving deep gashes that sizzled with his own fire. The unknown vampire retaliated, attempting to burn her with his searing touch. But (Y/n) was quick, her instincts honed from years of training.
As minutes turned into an eternity, the battle raged on, the clash of fire and fury reverberating through the air. The unknown vampire, growing increasingly desperate, unleashed a massive fireball, aiming to engulf (Y/n) in its destructive embrace.
But (Y/n) wouldn't be so easily defeated. With a burst of speed, she lunged forward, her jaws clamping down on the vampire's arm, tearing through flesh and bone. A howl of pain mixed with the crackling of flames filled the air.
The unknown vampire's strength began to wane as (Y/n) relentlessly attacked, her determination unwavering. With one final swipe of her paw, she sent the vampire hurtling through the air, crashing into a nearby tree with a resounding thud.
Silence settled over the battlefield as the dust began to settle. (Y/n) stood tall, her fur singed in places, but her eyes gleaming with triumph. The unknown vampire lay motionless on the ground, his body broken and defeated.
As the Cullens and the Volturi gathered around, their expressions a mix of awe and gratitude, (Y/n) took a moment to catch her breath. She had successfully protected her friends, but not without a cost. Her fur was matted with blood, and she bore a few shallow scratches, reminders of the fierce battle she had just fought.
Alice approached (Y/n) with concern etched on her face. "Are you alright, (Y/n)? That was incredible! You saved us all."
(Y/n) nodded, a weary smile playing on her lips. "I'm fine, Alice. Just a few scratches. It was worth it to protect everyone."
The Volturi, though initially skeptical, couldn't help but express their admiration for (Y/n)'s bravery and skill. Aro stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with respect. "You are truly a remarkable ally, (Y/n). Your loyalty and strength are unmatched."
(Y/n) inclined her head in gratitude, acknowledging the compliment. "Thank you, Aro. But let's not forget that we all stood together. We are united in protecting what we hold dear."
As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the battlefield, (Y/n) couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. She had faced a formidable opponent and emerged victorious, proving her worth as a fierce guardian. The bonds of friendship and family had been tested, but they had only grown stronger.
As the dust settled from the intense battle, (Y/n) stood alongside Alec and Jane, their bodies still trembling from the adrenaline rush. The twins exchanged bewildered glances before turning their attention to (Y/n), gratitude and curiosity etched on their faces.
"Why did you save us, (Y/n)?" Jane asked, her voice filled with a mix of surprise and genuine curiosity. "We've never been on the best of terms."
Alec nodded in agreement, his usually stoic expression softened with gratitude. "We appreciate your help, but we never expected you to put yourself in harm's way for us."
(Y/n) looked at the twins, her eyes filled with sincerity. "It doesn't matter who you are or what our history may be. In my eyes, you are still children, and I won't allow any harm to befall a child under my watch."
A flicker of understanding washed over Jane's features as she considered (Y/n)'s words. "But we're not innocent, (Y/n). We have done terrible things."
(Y/n) gently placed a hand on Jane's shoulder, her voice filled with compassion. "No one is born evil, Jane. We all make choices, and sometimes those choices lead us down dark paths. But it doesn't mean we are beyond redemption or unworthy of protection."
Alec's eyes softened, his usually guarded demeanor giving way to a vulnerability rarely seen. "You've shown us kindness, (Y/n), even when we didn't deserve it. We'll never forget that."
(Y/n) smiled warmly, her heart swelling with a sense of fulfillment. "Kindness is not given based on merits, Alec. It is shown because it's the right thing to do. And I believe in giving everyone a chance at redemption, including both of you."
The twins exchanged a glance, their expressions filled with newfound hope. For the first time, they felt the weight of their past actions lifting, replaced by the possibility of a brighter future.
As the Cullens and the Volturi regrouped, the bonds of trust and understanding began to strengthen. The events of the battle had brought them closer, forging a unity that would prove invaluable in the trials to come.
(Y/n) knew that her act of protection had not only saved the lives of the twins but had also planted a seed of change within their hearts. She had shown them that they were not alone, that they had allies who believed in their capacity for growth and redemption.
With the battle behind them and the lessons learned, (Y/n) vowed to continue being a guardian for those in need, regardless of their past. Her resolve to protect the innocent and offer compassion to those who had lost their way burned brighter than ever.
As the battle-weary group dispersed, Marcus, the quietest of the Volturi, approached (Y/n) with a soft expression of concern. "Allow me to tend to your wounds, (Y/n)," he offered, his voice gentle yet filled with a hint of sincerity.
(Y/n) hesitated, surprised by the unexpected offer from the stoic vampire. However, she recognized the genuine concern in his eyes and nodded in acceptance. "Thank you, Marcus. I appreciate your kindness."
They moved away from the others, finding a secluded spot where Marcus could tend to her scratches. With a graceful touch, he examined her wounds, his fingers cool against her skin. As he worked, his eyes seemed to hold a mixture of sadness and longing.
In the quiet solitude, Marcus broke the silence, his voice barely above a whisper. "You possess an extraordinary heart, (Y/n). Your actions today, defending those children without hesitation, have shown me a depth of compassion I thought lost to me."
(Y/n) looked up, meeting Marcus' gaze, her curiosity piqued. "What do you mean, Marcus? Are you saying there was a time when you had compassion?"
A wistful smile played at the corners of Marcus' lips. "Long ago, I was not always so detached. There was a time when I believed in love, in the beauty of life. But tragedy befell me, and my heart became consumed by grief, leaving me numb to the world around me."
(Y/n) listened intently, her heart aching for the pain Marcus had endured. She reached out, gently touching his hand. "I'm sorry for what you've been through, Marcus. But don't lose hope. Love and compassion can be found again, even in the darkest of times."
A flicker of emotion crossed Marcus' eyes as he looked down at her hand resting on his. "Your words resonate within me, (Y/n). Perhaps there is still a chance for me to rediscover what I've lost."
(Y/n) smiled warmly, her touch conveying comfort and understanding. "Never underestimate the power of second chances, Marcus. Life has a way of surprising us, revealing hidden paths we never thought possible."
The moment between them lingered, filled with unspoken emotions and the promise of a connection forged through shared experiences. As Marcus finished tending to (Y/n)'s wounds, he couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope rekindling within his immortal heart.
With a final touch, Marcus withdrew his hand, his gaze full of gratitude. "Thank you, (Y/n), for allowing me to care for you. You have given me a gift today, one I will not forget."
(Y/n) nodded, her eyes shimmering with kindness. "The pleasure was mine, Marcus. Remember that you are never alone. We all have our own battles, but together, we can find strength and purpose."
They rejoined the rest of the group, the weight of their conversation lingering in the air. As they faced the uncertain future, (Y/n) and Marcus carried with them a newfound understanding, their paths intertwined by the healing power of compassion and the possibility of love rediscovered.
best of sara's fic, according to her
Because I’m feeling some kind of way about my cancer lately and wanted to put together a Sara’s Greatest Fic Hits while I’m still around to do it (which is a morbid thing to type, but see the intro: been feeling some kind of way lately).
These range from my most popular fics, to the ones lost to weird posting hours, and everything in between. If I counted correctly, there are 14 fandoms on this list: from Mass Effect and Dragon Age, to Grey’s Anatomy and Stargate SG-1, to The West Wing and Calvin & Hobbes.
I’d appreciate reblogs on this (I am not ashamed to pull the stage iv cancer card here) so it can reach as many people as possible.
I have been writing fic for over 15 years; this is not a short list.
All are rated T or lower unless otherwise indicated. All stories are at or under the 3k mark unless otherwise indicated.
Stargate SG-1:
waves are universal (the heaven in hiding remix) (Sam/Jack; I’m very Normal about this fic; time travel and alternate realities, a host of OCs (and some familiar faces from Norafic if you look closely), oh and the Sam/Jack kid from the alternate reality! Only she’s an adult and working on a way to save the world! This has it all, folks: humor, romance, angst, action! I told you I’m Normal about it; 40k)
strange is the night where black stars rise (Sam; horror! A low creeping sense of doom! The King in Yellow! No, seriously, fuck that planet; 10k)
#sg1wedding (Sam/Jack; their wedding turned into An Event against their will; bets are going down about who would win in a fight: Bra’tac or the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs; also Jack loses his socks; twitterfic from 2012 and technology has definitely Marched On, just read it like an unhinged group chat fic)
phoenix (Sam/Daniel/Teal’c, Sam/Jack, Sam/Jack/Daniel/Teal’c; apocalypse (that I consulted a real live geologist on!); rebuilding in the wake of said apocalypse; team family feelings, kids, and some really shitty neighbors; 38k)
Dragon Age:
joy cometh in the morning (Ariadne; rated M; a host of OCs; mind the warnings; friendship; worldbuilding galore; friendships and mentors and first loves; did I mention friendship and worldbuilding?; 56k)
through the rude wind’s wild lament, and the bitter weather (Ari+Cullen; quiet magic, kind magic, good magic is still new to Cullen)
as the sun kissed the horizon (Ari/Josephine; a relationship in ten moments)
‘til we meet again (Ari+Cullen; platonic sleeping together!)
so hold my hand, consign me not to darkness (Ari; her faith is the core of who she is and, for the first time, Andraste isn’t there; post-Trespasser)
raise your fists up to the sky (Kylie/Krem; it’s Krem’s first day with the Chargers and there’s a naked elf in the middle of camp)
every demon wants his pound of flesh (Krem+Bull; Krem was in the Fade with the Inquisitor and the fear demon had some Things To Say To Him)
black dove (Anaya) & strange little girl (Anaya+Dagna) & dissolving clouds (Anaya+Cullen) (because neurodivergent Inquisitor, friendship, blossoming romance, and three very different takes on blood magic)
skeletons (Zahara+Bull; she is saarebas, he is Ben-Hassrath, and language is important)
children shouldn’t play with dead things (Juliette Amell; she’s always had an easier time with the dead than the living; cw for bugs)
a sorta fairytale (Josephine/Cassandra; flower shop & tattoo parlor AU; 8k)
Mass Effect Trilogy:
gonna set your flag on fire (Nora Vakarian, Liv/Garrus, James/Liara, Liv+Liara, Livfam; action! Humor! Angst! Worldbuilding! OCs!; I am Super Normal about this fic too; I promise everything’s okay in the end, promise, even though it isn’t written yet; Nora is an N3 and has an inactive control chip in her head. She and her team are ordered to investigate a Cerberus facility. It goes, shall we say, awry; 40k)
anthem (Liv/Garrus, Hannah/Zaeed, Liv+Liara; eight months is a long time without each other; angst with a happy ending (I promise); post-Destroy; 13k)
holy ground & dress (Liv/Garrus; ficlets from the night he gets sworn in as Councilor)
brightly shone the moon at night (Liv, Liv+Liara, Liv/Garrus, Livfam; five Christmases in Olivia Shepard’s life; 5k)
the pieces of gold, they light up your eyes & now we’re alone, now we’re alive (Liv/Garrus; the evolution of a relationship)
fighting is said to have reached palaven (Liv/Garrus; please, please let him be alive)
and some things you just can’t speak about (Quentus+Nico; the war)
‘cause i know that it’s delicate (Liv/Garrus; pre-wedding!)
nosce te ipsum (Nico; he likes boys and fanfiction and he didn’t think he’d get his little italicized oh moment)
i will write you love letters if you tell me to (Liv/Garrus; Hannah gives him one of Liv’s notebooks before he goes off to Omega; Garrus does the only thing he can think of with it)
i really need you (Liv/Garrus; James POV during the reunion scene in Priority: Palaven)
you look really tired (Liv/Garrus, Liv+Liara; post-Thessia, Olivia’s not doing well)
hey, so, ground rules (Liv+Zaeed; it’s a lot weird now that he’s dating her mom)
and all the scars you bear are from a previous war (Liv+Quentus; Mom!Liv)
you can hear it in the silence (Liv/Garrus; just a moment, post-war)
this all started because of a bad day (Liv/Garrus; from first meetings to matching rings)
combat, i’m ready for combat & turn on your favorite nightlight (Hannah; she’s a civilian and her daughter isn’t, and she’s bound and determined to know what Liv goes through when her boots hit the ground; Hannah, Zaeed, Liv, and Garrus hit up Armax)
four quarians who never made it back to the fleet (and one who did) (kinda what it says on the tin, honestly. Oh, Tali’s in this!)
everyone’s lost, the battle is won (Evangeline; somewhat predictably, my experiment in getting as many of my team killed as possible resulted in Feelings About It)
across the sky (Susan/Liara; how to make the Control ending feel good)
and yours is in red underlined (Vanessa; The Illusive Man has pissed her off for the last time)
i’m headed straight for the castle (Vanessa; renegade control ending; kneel before your queen)
Mass Effect Andromeda:
for saviours (Tori; ten scenes from a pre-Andromeda life; 10k)
ringing joyful and triumphant (Tori/Liam/Jaal; just some morning fluff)
the thing with the baby angara (Tori/Liam/Jaal; thinking about the future)
the undone and the divine (Tori/Liam/Jaal; the lone single solitary explicit fic on here, give it props for that alone; Liam gets absolutely railed by his partners. That’s it. That’s the fic.)
you’re like the thing that makes the universe explode (Sara Ryder/Suvi, Drack; kid, the only people who don’t know that you like Suvi are people who haven’t met you and Suvi)
this one’s for the torn down, the experts at the fall (Tori+Garrus; one night in the intersection of Victoria Ryder and Archangel; maybe they’re better friends than they both thought)
The West Wing:
a great revelation sigh (CJ; she’s Chief of Staff; ten steps to the apocalypse; the apocalypse source probably didn’t age well, heads up)
it’s in my blood and i won’t give up ‘cause it’s running through my veins (Amy+Andi; it’s Election Day in the future and Amy has nothing to do)
Grey’s Anatomy:
dropsonde (the singers in a lower choir remix) (Addison/Alex, Derek/Meredith, Addison+Derek, Addison+Mark, Mark+Derek; the one that kicked off all the remixes; absolutely off the rails from canon somewhere in S3; budding romances and kidfic and my theory about people being storms and lighthouses; 40k)
scarlet city (Mark/Addison, Burke/Cristina; film noir gangster and detective AU; Addison’s the gangster, Burke’s the detective; literally everyone I could fit into this fic shows up; also Denny is comic relief; 18k)
Misc:
access records (Star Trek Voyager; Naomi Wildman’s holodeck access for the past week; worldbuilding!)
in this twilight our choices seal our fate (the song in the house of night remix) (SVU; Olivia/Elliot; rated M; on the rise and fall of partnership; probably a little too much religious imagery but what the hell else am I gonna do with a minor in religious studies?; 4k)
the end of days job (Leverage; Parker+Eliot+Hardison; the apocalypse job, basically; this one ages well!)
let the only sound be the overflow (D&D; Calia/Kelpie/Edal, aka ot3: fathoms below; the ocean is big and they are not)
we are golden stars above silver seas (we hear echoes from another galaxy) (Calvin & Hobbes; Calvin+Susie; throughout all those years, she never gave up on him; this one went viral on tumblr [LINK] and I cleaned it up for the AO3 version)
lift her, pull her, from the orchids (Grace and Frankie; Grace/Frankie; the one where I invoke the spelling bee)
rocket queens (Babylon 5/Pacific Rim; Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters; look, they’re jaeger pilots, I really don’t know what else to tell you)
the great gig in the sky (Battlestar Galactica; Six; rebirth is painful, she forgets this sometimes)
Tumblr media
The time was growing late where you should have been back home already preparing for bed. You couldn't leave the comfort of the forest though, not when you and Edward lay side by side, him listening as you described Dieufel's magic and Nadege taking over Bella's training. Soft grass tickling your bare arms and legs and the singing of evening birds swooping into the trees after a long day. Bugs kept away from you and Edward, probably thanks to whatever supernatural scent was embedded into you.
You also brought up that in just two days you'd be free of all academic obligation. That meant you could finally go on your long overdue date.
Edward smiles, turning onto his side to face you. "I've been thinking of all the things we can do. Can't seem to decide on just one though."
Laughing you follow suit and roll over to talk to him. The sun wasn't bright any longer, but just a few meager rays were enough to dance off of Edward's skin and illuminate the prism-like structure of Edward's skin and how it's almost blinding. Odd how vampires took on such a trait. "Yeah? What are some of your ideas?" All the while you covertly admire how handsome Edward is in daylight. Your fingers itch to touch his luminescent skin and feel it's coolness against your skin.
He watches the subtle twitch of your fingers as you restrain them from reaching out to him. That makes the corner of his lips curl. Boldly he grabs your hand as he replies "Well, I thought about maybe a movie but that's too cliche. Go-karting sounded like fun when I was researching what girls these days like to do on dates."
You snort, hiding your blush while Edward plays with your small fingers. "You sound old when you say things like that."
"I am old!" Edward chortles before shaking his head. He likes how soft your hands are. It really felt like you were made for him the way your hand easily melds into his grasp. Pale fingers weave themselves with your's offering a contrast in skin tone that mesmerizes both you and Edward. "Then I remember you telling me how the pack go cliff jumping. We could probably both appreciate a bit of fun adrenaline."
"What about the sun? If we go during the day people might see you light up like a disco ball." Oh you love his laugh and how it rumbles his whole body. You don't remember him laughing as much as he did when he was with you.
He acknowledges your concern though. "Unfortunately we'll have to go later in the day to avoid that." An apologetic tone laces his words. There were limits on what the two of you would be able to do together. You don't mind though. The most important thing was being with him and nurturing your bond.
An amusement park would be ideal since places like that have many different types of rides to enjoy. The downside was that anything like that would not be found near Forks. You'd have to travel outside of the city, possibly several hours out but thanks to Edward's driving, it wouldn't be a long drive. It would be a sight to see the vampire on a roller coaster. A picture would be necessary to show the others that Edward wasn't us stiff and brooding as they all thought he was. At least with you, he came to life.
"What would you like to do?" He asks you.
You think for a moment and shrub against the blades of grass. "I don't know. I've never been on a date before."
That was news to him. "Really? You and Embry-"
Instantly your upper body shoots up and your hand falls from his. "What're you talking about?" For some reason it made me defensive when Edward brought up Embry. Not like anything happened. It had only ever been a crush plus that one kiss several weeks ago.
Gauging your reaction, Edward makes sure to compose his sentences more delicately. "I'm sorry. Just. . . The way I've seen him look at you and his thoughts. . . I thought there was something between you two."
What had Embry been thinking while around Edward?
Evita was going to need to make more amulets to prevent Edward from reading anymore intimate thoughts.
You purse your lips and relax back down though there's now a frown pulling down your lips. He wasn't exactly wrong. "Nothing like that at least. I did used to have a crush on him a couple of years ago and I think he did too, but nothing came of it. We've just decided to stay friends. Other than that, no dates. This will be my first."
That seems to make him grin a little as he was tickled by that. "I'll make sure not to disappoint."
Tumblr media
The next day was spent with you itching to get out of your summer school classes and Bella continuing her lessons with Nadege while Dieufel and Evita tag teamed on making the wards. Their energy was always spent after making just one and needing a recovery period of at least the rest of the day so they could get back at it the next. However, even after getting out of your lessons, you and Embry had patrol duty and couldn't stay at Sam's for long. Seth is assigned to your shift too but linked to his mind, you feel something off. Unsettled as he attempts to keep whatever secrets that were bothering deep inside of him under lock and key. Embry exchanged a look with you but you shook your head. It was something to discuss later. Right now they had to keep constant vigil. Like the Cullens had reminded them, time was of the essence. No one knew when the Volturi would learn of everything. Not exactly. So every minute counted. Edward, Esme and Rosalie also aided in security as they kept to the treetops. A good thing they didn't require sleep.
Spreading out in a tactical maneuver, your pad along as your eyes easily adjust to the darkening sky. Above you hear branches groan against the landing feet of Edward. A reassuring sound for you as you had broken apart from Embry and Seth. You could still hear them, both in your mind and outside. Random check-ins with one another. Nothing to note. All the anxiety over when the Volturi would arrive was starting to wear on you. You hadn't been able to sleep well to begin with thanks to Xiomara, but now it was damn right impossible to fall asleep right away. If you were lucky it took you about four hours to fall asleep meaning you were getting about three hours worth of genuine sleep. But you couldn't complain. You didn't want to as you felt Seth fretting over something he didn't want you to know about. Even Embry was wearing thin thanks to summer school and was running on exhausted fumes.
Thankfully the both of you would be free soon. It was just one more day then You could focus your energy completely on patrol. Unfortunately you'd had to explain the circumstances to your parents on the simplest level. You kept the major facts away from them like how the Volturi most likely wouldn't like that fact of the existence of your pack and that they most likely wanted to exterminate all of you. Nothing too big.
A twilight glow takes over the sky that gradually fades into indigo and then eventual blackness. If only you could check your phone just to see what time it actually was. You wouldn't know if you're shift was up until the voices of the others became vocal in your mind. The residual scent of magic still hung in the air, waking you up and providing enough energy to keep moving through the part of the forest that was densley packed with trees and foliage alike. It echoes in your bones and fills your lungs up with the sweetest spices that envigorate you.
Thinking about the witches made the time go by faster thankfully as your conversations started to lean towards Bella's involvement.
"I still can't wrap my head around that Bella Swan, the weak human girl, can actually use magic and help us." Embry snorts at the thought and Seth's mind hums in quiet agreement as he half pays attention to the conversation.
"Oh come on. Don't say that. You make it sound like she was completely useless to us before. Just because she's a human doesn't mean she should be disregarded. She has her own given strengths."You roll your eyes at him. Granted she was the one to instigate this whole mess but it had never been her intention.
There's an accusation in his words "When did you two become friends." You didn't appreciate his tone and though you couldn't see him, you stop dead in your tracks and glare toward the direction you scented him.
"We're not."You shrug to yourself knowing Embry wouldn't understand. Though the hackles on your neck are now standing at attention, literally ruffled by him.
Embry wasn't about ready to give up though. Whatever bone he was gnawing on, he refused to relinquish it. "Even if Edward still loves her?"
Finally Seth butts in. "Embry. . ."The last thing he wanted to hear was more arguing. You catch a glimpse of his memory of earlier that morning. Leah was there as well as their mother Sue. Mouths moved with no sound produced but even that bit of a picture quickly dissolved as Seth didn't want anyone to pry.
You feel the skin of your snout scrunch up into a snarl, your teeth showing and your tongue licking across them in agitation. "Why are you bringing this up? Is it so wrong that I don't mind Bella? Can I not just be pleasant toward her for the sake of it? Edward has nothing to do with it."Why was everyone ready to pit you against Bella when she had never really done anything hateful toward you?
In response, you could feel Embry's embarrassment and shame, maybe even a lick of jealousy too as he finally backs down and doesn't say another word much to the relief of both you and Seth. You didn't like fighting with Embry, it never felt right. But it didn't sit right with you what he said. Bella wasn't useless. She just didn't have the special abilities that the pack and vampires did. Well, technically she's had magic in her all this time, just no way of knowing how to wield it or that she could manifest it into something greater.
Around midnight (or so you guess) you hear the voices of the others coming to take over for the rest of the night. Jared, Colin and Paul could already be heard padding through the trees.Glad that you could finally return home, you make a pitstop after you switch back to your human skin and slip on your shorts and tank top. You stumble into Sam's occupied backyard. There are two tents already set up, one for Nadege and Evita and the other for Diuefel though the later is the only one still awake. He's sitting outside the flap of his tent, from his lips is what looks like a cigarette but it smells sweet and calms you. Like herbs and not the sickening fumes of nicotine.
He notices you and smiles softly. "Welcome back. Hard day?"
"Not really. Just tedious." When he pats the spot next to him, you take it. "What is that?"
Pulling the small stick out of his mouth, you notice that the paper is black and not white. "It's a special blend of herbs that help me go to sleep. Even though I'm beyond exhausted I still have difficulties going to bed. Even when I was little it takes me hours to really fall asleep. Annoying but this helps." Dieufel hands it to you. "Try it."
Since it wasn't toxic like nicotine you gingerly take it between your forefinger and thumb, lifting it to your lips. You felt naughty but even sniffing the smoke that twirled from it's lit end has your muscles relaxing.
"Inhale very slowly." Dieufel instructs, watching you carefully. Even though you do as he said, you're still hacking up a lung. Not used to anything other than oxygen circulating in your lungs. You're basically tossing back the herbal smoke at him as your eyes water, throat up in flames. He pats your back and reaches into his tent for a bottle of water. Again he warns you to drink slowly.
You wheeze out that you're okay and hand the bottle back to Dieufel. "S-Sorry."
He chuckles. "Don't worry about it. Not your fault. It happens to everyone their first time." Returning the smoke back to his lips, he expertly inhales, holds it in then leisurely lets it go. Even though you weren't successful, you were still feeling a bit of a soothing effect that has your eyelids growing heavy and you have to lean back on your hands in order to keep yourself up.
"How'd you guys do today?" Voice still raw, at least you were capable of speech once again.
Rolling his neck to produce a nice 'pop', Dieufel groans. "Evita got sick when making her's. She's not used to using so much magic. I was only able to make one as even I am growing weary. But Bella, I don't know how she does it. She's able to take in so much information, absorb and utilize it appropriately. It took me two years before I could successfully conjure flames to light candles. Bella did it in a second after her lesson."
"How long until she's ready to make a ward?"
His grimace was enough of a response to you but he goes on to say "I don't know. Hopefully she'll surprise us. But. . . something like that is complicated. You see how it wipes us out each time. And the refractory period becomes longer. A spell like that is similar to weaving. You twine different spells together for a ward. In order for it to stick, the threads can't risk being unraveled. If it unravels at the wrong time, it could mean calamity to Forks."
From one of his pockets he pulls out the ward he had made today. The carvings that were magically etched into, he explained, were actually the spells woven together. No wonder it felt alive in your palms, warm and buzzing with energy.
He sadly regards it in your palm. "If we had older witches, they would have been done in a faster manner. We're young though, our magic not as strong."
"You guys don't know any other witches that are older?"
Shaking his head, Dieufel takes another drag from his smoke. "Not one that can travel easily. Plus witches tend to scatter themselves in the wind. It's dangerous to have a coven of witches. All that magic concentrated into one place? Any monster could descend on them with no trouble at all. Even with wards erected, there can be leaks if you're not absolutely careful. One leak will be the doom of the entire coven. I'm not going to lie, I feel uneasy with all of us being here. That's how Nadege and I were able to find Evita so easily from the sky."
"Why haven't we been attacked then?" You ask.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Lowly chuckling to not wake up the girl's in the tent next to him. "Could be because of the Cullens. Even other supernatural creatures try to stay away from vampires."
You were unable to stop the flow of questions coming out of you. Curiosity encouraging you. "What other things are out there? Witches, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters. . ."
His smile turns sympathetic. As if you didn't already know the world was actually a more dangerous place to live in since vampires existed. Now the possibilities were vast and endless. "Lets see. . . There's ghouls, you definitely never want to encounter them. A pain to kill. Ghosts certainly. Zombies, in a way. Wraiths. Sea people. Necromancers."
All that was missing were aliens which Dieufel could neither confirm nor deny since he'd never personally seen one.
Noting the subtle fear on your features, he attempts to reassure. "Not all of them are evil. Just like with vampires, there are good ones.Those who resist their thirst for blood and flesh. They still have their humanity."
You glance up at the stars. "Then. . . is it possible that there might be some good members of the Volturi? Those who we can talk sense into."
"If they are then they remain silent. Likely they have no real power and are just as helpless." Finally he's down to the stub of his smoke and Dieufel deposits it into a homemade clay ashtray. "It will not do us any good worrying about what is out of our control. We both need rest. Best if you head home."
That was the best idea you'd heard all day.
You drag your exhausted body home, taking care not to make too much noise as you go in through your bedroom door. Easier. The front door had obnoxious, creaking hinges that no amount of WD40 could fix. Tired, burning eyes barely manage to pick out your pajamas from a small heap near your bed. You let your body fall atop of your mattress face first.
"(y/n)! Please wait!"
You'd been dreading talking to Embry after the brief spat last night. No longer angry, you just didn't want things to grow awkward. Feet halting, your hands fly up to your backpack straps and grip them tightly; an anxiety soother. "Em. . ."
Equally nervous about confrontation with you, Embry hurries with his words before he lost his courage "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I said. I had no right and it wasn't fair of me. I'm. . . I-It's still hard for me to really let you go. . . I get jealous. But I'm working on it, I promise."
Demeanor softening, your lips turn up in an understanding smile. "No, it's okay. Embry. I appreciate the apology. And I get it. I'd probably feel the same way as you if you were the one to imprint on someone." Before your feelings had transgressed to those of romantic, you were best friends first and foremost.
Embry's face brightens and a blinding grin shines. There was nothing more that needed to be said about it.
Once backpacks were dropped off at your place, you and Embry hustle through the woods but stop when you pass by the Black residence. Gloom weighs heavy in your chest, remembering getting into a fight with Jacob over you revealing his imprinting to Bella. Bella needed to know but at the cost of your relationship with him? "Do you think Jake will forgive me?"
"Of course he will." Embry immediately replies with ease. He misses when it was just the four of you guys, back to simpler times where the four of you would spend hours outside in the woods at the back of Jacob's house. "Let him blow off steam. You know how stubborn he is. Give it time. Maybe Sam will let him back to patrol as long as he behaves himself."
One could only hope so as both of you continue to stare longingly at the back of Jacob's house.
Pairing: Carlisle Cullen x F!PlusSize!reader
Word Count: 1.4K
Warnings: insecure reader, fatphobia, people being assholes, takes place in a hospital
A/N: I totally used this as a way to procrastinate all the work I had to do this weekend and I’m just now realizing that I kind of misread the request, oops! I think this is pretty great though, not gonna lie. Once again, comments are appreciated!
____________________________________________________________
You didn’t often visit Carlisle at work, but occasionally, and most importantly when you missed him you’d find the time to make it over there and have lunch with him. Not that he’d be eating. This day was no different, despite the fact that you had woken up with him by your side and it had only been a few hours, you missed him terribly. Thus, you had made plans with your boss to take a longer lunch break than normal and picked up a sandwich from the diner on the way to the hospital.
Part of the reason you loved Carlise was his ability to make you feel loved, wholly and completely. He didn’t look past your size, he loved it.
“Your body just shows me the life you’ve lived darling, your softness reminds me that you are human and I love it, I love you,” He’d said when you asked him about it one time. In the moments when you couldn’t understand why he had chosen you, why he’d keep you around when you thought you’d never be able to be as smooth as his kind. They were all beautiful and flawless and you were, well, not.
Nevertheless, he loved you, his heart sang for you and when you were apart all he could think about was getting back to you. You are the other half of his soul, his mate, his one true love and he never wanted to let you go.
Taking your sandwich in a to-go box from the diner, you walked through the front doors of the Forks hospital and greeted the receptionist on duty.
“Hey Sandy, how are you doing this fine day?”
“Just peachy hon, and you?” She looked up from the computer screen and smiled at you.
“Doing good, came to have lunch with Carlisle, is he available?”
“I think so, I’ll page him and let him know you’re here, you can take a seat until he gets here.” She said cheerily.
Your stomach dropped, you didn’t really feel like sitting in the waiting room with all these people. You’d never really felt welcomed in hospitals, you had really avoided them until Carlisle had come into your life. Doctors would take one look at you and decide that whatever problem you were experiencing could be solved with weight loss.
Taking a deep breath, you move to sit in one of the only open chairs left. It seems as though everyone in Forks was in the hospital today. As you sit you begin to look around, clocking the mother and daughter duo in the corner of the room. They continue to talk in whispers to one another and taking not at all subtle looks in your direction. You try your best to tune them out, you really do but when the younger of the duo burst out laughing at something her mother said while staring at you, you can’t help but feel the sudden urge to flee.  While you were still contemplating if you could simply text Carlisle that there was a work emergency and run away, he turned the corner.
He seemed to be in a good mood, when he came into your view he had a smile on his face and you watched as whatever tension he was holding in his shoulder bled out when he set his sight on you. You jumped up and walked as quickly as you could over to him, trying to not seem too eager to leave the room full of people.
“How are you my love?” he asked.
“I’m okay, really looking forward to this sandwich and some time alone with my handsome lover.” You cheekily replied
“Well then, I better not keep you waiting.” He took the bag with the sandwich from your hand and placed his other hand on your lower back.
As he led you through, the well-lit halls towards his office, you let your mind wander. It isn’t often that people are that obvious about their distaste when it comes to your figure. And no matter how much Carlisle and his family ensured you that they thought you were beautiful, all it took was a mean look and some whispered comments to bring you all the way back to square one. Why were people so cruel? Why did other women tear each other down? Why were you letting this get to you? Question after question rattled around in your brain and you completely zoned out of your surroundings. You didn’t notice when tears started to leak from your eyes, or the concerned look that Carlsie threw your way when he heard your heartbeat pick up.
Carlisle hates when you cry, he can’t stand you seeing upset. Your heart is one of the only things that matter to him and when it’s in pain, so is he. He didn’t know why you started crying but if had his choice, another tear would never cross your eyelid.
You seemed to jump back into existence when he gently pushed you down on the couch he had in his office. He placed his icy hand on your cheek and lifted your eyes to meet his.
“What’s wrong? Why is your heart in pain?” he asked so gently as if you would break if he pushed too hard.
And break you did, with his concerned tone, tears began to flow faster out of your eyes and down the apples of your cheeks leaving trails in their wake.
In one swift move, he took your place on the couch and cradled your shaking frame in his arms. He pulled you in close to his chest and began whispering sweet nothings into your ear. It's okay. Everything is going to be okay. Just breathe pretty girl, deep breaths. That’s it, you’re doing so well. You had no idea how long this went on for, but eventually, your cries reduced to sniffles and your breathing evened out. Where there was once melancholy, now there was only exhaustion.
“What happened love?” Carlisle asked. You shook your head but answered him anyway.
“There were two girls in the waiting room, a mother and daughter I think. They wouldn’t stop staring at me and whispering things. They started laughing and I don’t know I guess it was just too much. I felt so small and so huge at the same time.” You let it all out, and as you recalled what happened, the weight on your chest lessened. You took a deep breathe, “I know that I shouldn’t feel this way and that you think I’m beautiful it just-”
“Darling, you’re allowed to feel however you want. There is no should or shouldn’t. Yes, I think you're the most gorgeous woman on the planet but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have insecurities, it just means that I’ll have to do my best to remind you just how amazing you really are.” Carlisle cut you off resolutely. His arms tightened their hold on you, “I have eternity to show you just how wonderful you are, eventually it will get easier I promise darling.”
“I just don’t understand why people have to be so cruel.” You responded.
“I don’t know love, but you didn’t deserve to be treated like that. You don’t have a mean bone in your body. I tell you what, why don’t you eat your lunch while you do that I’ll retell you the story of the moment I knew you were going to be mine, how does that sound?”
“It sounds wonderful Carlsise, you always know just how to make me feel better.”
For the next hour, Carlisle reminded you of the moment he fell for you when you had walked into the hospital for a check-up. He could tell you were nervous, but you still gave every one of the staff a smile. He had been blown away by your beauty and continued to be blown away by you every day he got to spend with you.
One thing was for sure, you would spend the rest of eternity listening to Carlise tell you all of the things he loved about you. And you would spend even longer telling him all the reasons you loved him right back.
Please take a moment to tell me what y'all think! Reviews and comments are always appreciated. 😌❤️
Mia glanced up from her book as her stomach rumbled, the sound audible to her, and likely to her brother, but not to her brother’s girlfriend settled at the other end of the couch.
They had been sitting there on the couches in near silence ever since school let out, devouring their respective books for hours as Edward practiced piano in the next room over. Since the rest of Mia’s siblings left for Denali straight from the school parking lot, they’d been left entirely undisturbed. It was a rare gift, that, and Bella hadn’t pulled her eyes from the book since settling, completely absorbed in the pages before her.
Edward probably should have been with the others in Denali. He needed to hunt just as much as the rest of them, but he’d elected to stay behind, something he was doing more and more often these days—trading his lengthier hunting trips with the others for short stints that allowed him to remain only borderline satiated, but far closer to home.
Mia loved her brother, and there was a time when being apart for any significant portion of time had been difficult, but she wasn’t entirely certain if Edward’s near-constant presence these days was a gift or not, though she supposed it divided her parents’ attention a bit. The presence of Bella gave her parents someone else to fuss over, too.
Esme had gone out shortly after they arrived home, giving the kids their space as she often did, but Mia knew she would return soon. Carlisle would be back from his shift at the hospital any time now, too, and Mia was certain it was only a matter of time before the parents descended, soliciting their opinions on dinner, ready for the rare opportunity to cook for two rather than one.
Mia couldn’t remember the last time they’d let her cook anything for herself, so rare was it that they gave up the opportunity to dote. The opportunity to engage in something so entirely human as cooking. Mia liked to joke that she'd never survive on her own since they let her do so little in the kitchen. It wasn't far from the truth.
Mia watched Bella for a moment, trying to decide whether or not to interrupt the girl's reading, the only sound between them Edward's piano and another rumble of Mia's stomach.
“Bella,” Mia whispered, nudging the girl with her foot when the whispering didn’t provide any result other than a shift in Edward’s playing to something quieter and slower in tempo.
Mia rolled her eyes, glaring at her brother through the wall for his nosiness.
“Hmm?” Bella asked after a moment, finally pulling her eyes from the book as she finished her paragraph. She blinked as if she'd forgotten where she was. As if by pulling her eyes from the words on the page she was suddenly somewhere else entirely.
“Are you hungry?” Mia asked.
Bella glanced back to the book for a moment before meeting Mia’s eye, a grimace on her lips. “Starved, actually.”
Mia nodded, standing up from the couch and depositing her blanket and book. “Then I’ll make us something.”
Mia strode across the floor and through the next room where Edward had already stood to meet her.
“What do you want?” he asked. “I’ll make it.”
Mia waved her brother off. “I can cook for myself, Edward.”
Edward raised an eyebrow. "Since when?"
"Since I can," she answered, pushing him out of her path. “Don’t worry, I got this.”
Edward followed after her. He was poised to argue, poised to insist that his sister take up his offer, but Bella cleared her throat from the threshold of the living room, giving him a pointed look.
“Leave her alone, Edward.”
“Yeah, Edward, leave me alone,” Mia echoed, throwing a smirk at him as she then gave a grateful smile to Bella. Edward raised his hands in surrender and Mia turned away, practically skipping to the kitchen.
Mia skid to a halt as she entered the pristine kitchen. The cabinets and refrigerator were fully stocked, or as fully stocked as the family ever dared to be considering it was only Mia who ever actually ate anything. She was feeling snacky, uncertain that she had enough patience in her to cook an entire meal when her stomach already felt so empty, but she diligently looked to the paper where Esme had already planned the meals for the week anyway. Spinach lasagna—one of Mia’s favorites—was next on the docket, but that would take well over an hour to prepare and cook.
As hungry as she was, Mia wouldn't last that long, and yet she strived to make a point.
She was capable of cooking for herself.
Capable of following a simple recipe.
Mia moved around the kitchen, pulling one of the cookbooks out as she headed to her favorite cabinet—the snack cabinet—grateful that there was still something satisfying and snacky left there, some healthy version of a chip that Mia had come to like at a certain point because it wasn’t as if her family was going to allow actual junk food into the house.
She poured out a portion into a bowl before walking to the living room where Edward and Bella were seated on the couch, in a vaguely respectful position, though Mia hadn’t missed the flush of Bella’s cheeks and the awkward positioning.
She had given them plenty of notice, walking with purpose and making certain that her steps were able to be heard.
“Appetizer,” Mia announced as she set the bowl on the coffee table before walking back to the kitchen.
Mindlessly snacking on her own bowl of pseudo-chips, Mia flipped through the book and found the lasagna recipe. She had seen the process probably hundreds of times, settled at the counter while she watched her mother or father or one of her siblings putting the meal together for her.
There were times when her family went through the process of making the pasta by hand. There were times when the noodles came from a box. Mia knew without a thought that she would be doing the latter.
Wiping the chip dust on her hands off on her jeans, Mia moved around the room, pulling out the necessary ingredients. The noodles, the sauce ingredients, the cheeses, the spinach. Mia mixed the ricotta mixture together and started the sauce on the stove before she started searching the cabinets for the glass baking dish.
She searched the bottom row of cabinets twice before deciding it wasn't in its usual spot. Biting her lip, Mia surveyed the upper cabinets. Two cabinets in, she spotted the dish on the top shelf, clearly put away by one of her brothers.
Mia reached out for it, but it was just out of reach even when she leaned on the counter, lifting up onto the tips of her toes. She could get a good grip on it if she got up on the counter, but Mia knew better. She was clumsy and it wasn't safe and she had no interest in visiting her father in the emergency room on a Friday afternoon.
So Mia refrained, instead pulling a pair of tongs from one of the nearby drawers. She just needed to pull it down a few inches and then she could catch it in her other hand.
Mia set about it, standing on the tips of her toes once again for a little extra height. She reached out, setting her tongs around the glass handle of the dish. She eased the dish towards the edge, all of her focus there until she heard the gentle click of the door to her left.
She pulled her eyes from the dish to see her mother standing there, back from running her errands in town.
Mia flinched as dish tipped from the shelf. She let out a scream as the glass shattered around her upon impact, shards littering the floor at her feet.
Edward was there in the doorway less than a second later, soon enough to witness Mia’s fear shift to annoyance as she cursed under her breath.
“Come on, take my hand,” Esme said softly, extending a hand to guide her daughter safely through the field of glass littering the kitchen floor. “We'll clean this up and Edward will get you another dish so you can finish cooking,” she said, nodding at Edward and then to the cabinets.
“It smells delicious,” Esme told Mia as she gathered her daughter to her side, an arm around her shoulders.
Edward was unable to stop himself from snorting as he crossed the room, easily stepping around the glass. He was sure it smelled fine to a human, but to him…and to his mother…whatever his sister was putting together smelled nothing less than abhorrent.
“Yeah, maybe if you like dirt,” he said, earning a sharp glance from Esme by way of reprimand.
"Ah, yes. Of course." Mia pulled out of her mother's hold. “Because you prefer the entrancing scent of blood. I can step on a piece of glass if that would be—”
Mia stretched a bare foot out towards the glass, barely making it within a few inches before a pair of deceptively strong arms lifted her from the floor.
“Hey! Put me down!” Mia complained as she hung draped over Esme’s shoulder. It looked ridiculous, the woman holding the teenaged girl in such a position when she was barely five and a half feet tall.
"Please?" Mia added, but Esme made no effort to let her down.
“Not in my kitchen,” Esme answered as she carried Mia to the edge of the room. "You’re officially banned."
“Mom, it was just a joke, I swear,” Mia said, her arms gesturing to accompany her words even as she dangled upside down. “Look, Edward’s even laughing.”
Esme twisted to glance at her son, and the look she gave alone wiped a bit of the smirk from Edward's face.
He wasn't laughing at his sister's "joke." Truth be told, Edward hadn’t found it particularly funny either, but he couldn’t help but chuckle at the image of Esme swinging his sister over her shoulder and carrying her around. Even as Esme looked at him, the grin on his face grew once again. He couldn't help it, but then he met Esme's eye once again.
As Edward’s face sobered a bit further, Esme lowered Mia to the floor in front of her.
“Well, you’ll both have to excuse me for not finding the notion of my daughter slicing herself open very funny,” she said, frowning at her daughter and then at Edward. “I don’t believe your father would find it very funny either.”
“I know, I know.” Mia sighed, forcing herself to take a breath before she gave a proper response. Even if it was only a joke, she knew her parents could be testy about that sort of thing, her father especially. “I’m sorry. There’s really no need to revoke kitchen privileges. I promise I wasn’t actually going to—”
“Maybe it’s for the best, Mia,” Edward interrupted from where he now stood at the counter, his nose wrinkling as he hovered over the lasagna components. “This really does smell like—”
Esme opened her mouth to interrupt—to chastise, but she simply rose an eyebrow at him instead.
“It was just a joke,” Edward answered.
“Not a very funny one,” Mia answered.
“Alright,” Esme said, stepping back in front of Mia, meeting both her and Edward’s eyes in turn before continuing. “That’s enough. Both of you take your jokes and get out of my kitchen.”
Mia was poised to complain…poised to continue making her case for being allowed to stay and finish up her dinner, but Edward was too quick and too strong, and he swept his sister up in his arms before she could say another word.
Esme only rolled her eyes fondly as Edward carried a complaining Mia away. While the sound of children arguing may have frayed the patience of some mothers, Esme found she didn’t mind the sound of Edward and Mia teasing. Just as she didn't mind the opportunity to finish putting together dinner for Mia and Bella.
Even if Edward was right.
The lasagna did smell like dirt.
In the Shattering of Things, Ch. 68: No One But Me
Tumblr media
Summary: Rose confronts Cullen when she hears a devastating rumor and then is confronted with a bitter truth. With their Winter Palace operation closing in, Rose needs to get solid ground under her feet.
Fic Summary: Lady Rose Trevelyan's idle, aristocratic life blinks out in a haze of irrelevance when the breach destroys the Conclave. She may be soft and coddled when she joins the Inquisition, but there's a fierceness inside her she's yet to fully recognize. Armed with only a few relevant skills and the mark that makes her a legend, she is thrust onto a path delivering hope where it’s long been scorched away and finds comfort in the grumpy, handsome stick in the mud charged with her protection and training. As she stumbles her way across southern Thedas, she begins to realize she's tangled at the center of machinations she barely understands, and she's not alone in that. Enter Hawke.
Excerpt below the cut 👇
I recognize his gait before I recognize any other detail— the set and dip of his shoulders as he strides across the yard with determined steps. He disappears into the armory. I follow.
I’ve been feeling ill since Dorian confessed it to me. He said they’d been playing chess, carefully avoiding the subject of me, and it had just sort of slipped from Cullen’s lips. An offhand remark about stepping down. I’d pressed him for more but Dorian said the comment had emerged seemingly out of nowhere. He’d said that he looked exhausted and generally withdrawn, but that I could see with my own eyes.
Fires from the twin forges throw heat clear across the space, searing my skin with sudden radiance as I enter behind Cullen. A pair of blacksmiths repair dented shields and sharpen blades, the grinding and clanking reverberating off the timber and stone walls. The work doesn’t abate for my benefit which I appreciate as it provides enough cover for this prickly conversation.
“Commander,” I say, when it’s clear Cullen is on his way up to Cassandra’s small suite in the attic.
“Inquisitor,” he says, obviously flustered by my sudden presence. He hesitates in his boots but then saunters back toward me, stopping several paces away.
“Dorian mentioned something to me that I thought merited follow up,” I start with a heavy, inescapable sigh. “He was worried and didn’t know what to do. So he told me.”
Cullen shakes his head, grimacing, no doubt abusing himself for saying anything or trusting anyone at all. He motions to the smiths at work to vacate the space.
“He would never betray your confidence unless he thought it was serious,” I add, swallowing back the anxious knot in my throat. “He said you mentioned leaving.” Just saying it hits with the same savagery as it did the first time I heard it an hour ago.
Cullen blinks at me, chagrined. “That is not what I said. Whether he interpreted it that way is another story. And I will not be held accountable for his wild extrapolations.”
“I can see that you’re not doing well,” I press.
“It’s not your concern,” he answers. Too quickly.
“It is my concern. You’re my friend.” I wonder if that’s even true anymore.
Cullen snorts, pacing around in a restive figure eight, eyes searching blankly as he mulls over my words and prepares to parry. He’s building a wall between us faster than I can climb over it.
“And the commander of my army.” At least that should mean something to him.
He fixes an aggravated, hollow stare upon me. “Has my performance been substandard?”
I’m startled by the question. “No, not at all— I—”
“Then with respect, I assume the discussion is over.”
“Maker, Cullen. Don’t think I don’t notice.” I feel like I’m pleading with him. “I see it.”
“I believe I told you that Lady Cassandra would monitor my performance. And if I recall correctly, you consented. If you would like to redraw the parameters of the arrangement—”
“Stop,” I beg him. “Can’t we just talk the way we did before?”
He grudgingly turns to face me fully and nods, forcing himself to look at me.
“If you’re struggling without lyrium—”
“Are you asking me to take it?”
