Useful Online Resources for Creative Students

Tips to controlling your creative chaos.

Studying Creative Writing and Theatre led me to exploring more about myself as an individual as well as an aspiring writer and actress. And in my writing I managed to compile a few more secret helpers to my party so when I am on the verge of a meltdown due to stress and writer’s block, there’s always a helping hand to get me out of a tricky situation.

Every writer has their tools, from their brain to the type of pen they most prefer to make notes with and which software they prefer to work on. In this article I will be going through some of the tools that have best helped me through my time at university.

⊱ ────── The Dictionary and Thesaurus ────── ⊰

I know, I know, not particularly exciting and original but it is imperative for us to have these at the ready, whether through technological means of the internet or in printed editions. We have all been in that place where there is a word on the tip of our tongues but we just can’t find it and that is where these come to our rescue.

YouTube has plenty of channels dedicated to writing, publishing, editing etc. It also has footage of our beloved authors who give plenty of valuable advice from their extensive experience in the job. It is also home to many wonderful playlist channels- no doubt helping me with the flow of my stories a few times or concentrating on studying an essay.

⊱ ────── Spotify ───── ⊰

Speaking of music! Music is probably a number one for me personally, it creates the atmosphere internally before you cry, sweat and bleed it out onto the pages yourself with your own words. Spotify is my favourite as with a student discount you can get a premium membership that means no advertisement interruptions. You can also spend time creating different playlists for different works, for characters, settings or a collective emotion.

⊱ ────── Pinterest ────── ⊰

Now, if you have not come across the wonders of pinterest I must direct it towards you as some are stimulated by music others are stimulated by photos. Helping to visualise characters, clothing, setting they have many wonderful photos for this, as well as plenty of information that can be shared on history, culture, creative ways to get rid of a body etc. There are also posts specifically tuned for writers, a large amount coming from Tumblr blogs which I would also recommend looking at.

⊱ ────── Reedsy ────── ⊰

The next site I recommend is Reedsy. Reedsy is an online blog and website that connects writers, editors, artists and publishers. They have writing software where you can write your book in a publishable format, they have apps and tools that vary from generators and prompts to online classes that you can subscribe to. They also have writing competitions which help to create portfolios for new writers. At Reedsy you can meet other like minded individuals through the marketplace and post for your online portfolio.

⊱ ────── Fantasy Name Generators ────── ⊰

Now to some writers, using Generators can seem like a cheat but if you’re stuck then this website is a good place to go, whether you’re struggling with world-building or character creation and need some good names there’s always something you can find and note down. A tip to give would be to take two names and mix them to come up with something new, that way it also feels a little less of a cheat.

Finishing here, I hope that any of these tools are useful for you as they have been for me in organising my creative chaos. And my last piece of advice for any unpublished writer or writing student would be not to compare your works in progress with any published works. Who knows which draft number it is so don’t compare it to your first!

Flash Fiction #1

Inspired by @write-it-motherfuckers prompt post

Glen's nerves are fried, and the constant buzz of the machines around her feels like a swarm of angry bees in her ears. She paces the length of the room, the soles of her shoes clicking against the hard floor, once, twice, three times, her movements frenzied and agitated. The harsh overhead lights flicker, casting eerie shadows on the walls.

Finally, Glen spins on her heel, fixing her eyes on Jessica with an intensity that makes her friend uneasy. She opens her mouth, as if to speak, but the words die on her tongue, and she shuts it with a frustrated huff. With a desperate gesture, she rubs her eyes with her palm, trying to ease the tension headache that's been building behind her eyes.

Feeling defeated, Glen stomps over to a nearby chair, sinking down into it with a deep exhale. "Really?" Jessica asks, her voice laced with amusement and a hint of concern. She's been watching her friend the entire time, taking in the subtle changes in her body language and demeanor.

Glen shoots Jessica a withering glare, as if daring her to say something else. But instead of rising to the challenge, Jessica raises an eyebrow in response, silently acknowledging the unspoken tension that hangs between them.

"Are you sure about this? Once we broadcast this, there's no turning back," Glen asks, defeated. She doesn't agree with Jessica's plan, but she's just as desperate for change and freedom. She wants things to be better, and if this is the only way, then Glen supposes it should be done.

"That's what I'm counting on," Jessica says softly, knowing that Glen is on the edge of a breakdown. "They won't be able to cover this up. The people will know, and things will have to change, whether the government bastards want it or not."

Glen shakes her head and lays it down on the cool surface of the table. "You're absolutely crazy," she whispers, a huff of incredulous laughter slipping from her. Jessica is crazy for her plan, and Glen is even crazier for going along with it, for once again enabling Jessica to do stupid things.

Glen sits up abruptly and turns to the laptop connected to the system in the room. Her fingers fly over the keys, the tapping joining the buzzing rhythm of machines, and Jessica watches with rapt attention and a growing grin. Glen closes her eyes and hits 'enter,' allowing the video of the president in one of his secret meetings with his board to broadcast live across the country on every available server they could hack – and there were plenty of those.

The meeting that Glen just exposed to every person and their dog that lives in the country is one where the president and his board discuss their work on keeping tabs on private communication between people. Their supposed-to-be encrypted and private conversations were being read by random people that the government assigned to the job. They went further and discussed how they planned to do the same with all cameras that they can connect to, to keep watch of the people. Their argument was that the civilians had to be kept from making stupid decisions and guided down the right path, and the government could only do that if they saw what problems and mistakes the people made.

Glen stares at the silent broadcast playing on her own laptop screen, a stark contrast to the loud and damaging versions being displayed throughout the country at that very moment. She turns to Jessica, who looks satisfied, but Glen's shoulders sag. Jessica glances at her and her grin dims. She sits forward and pats Glen’s knee, trying to reassure her.

“It’s going to be okay,” Jessica says gently, attempting to soothe Glen, who laughs sarcastically.

"This is going to be a mess," Glen says, her anxiety mounting. But Jessica's grin lights back up, and Glen sighs, her anxiety fading at her friend's enthusiasm. It's too late to change their mind now; they're in this together, and Glen will just have to accept the new life that will start once they face the outside world, which she is certain will be wrecked.

"No, this is going to be the start of a revolution," Jessica says, her grin growing wider.

the feeling of hands removed, the warmth of lips, the pain of pleasure.

i’ve been here before in a bed with the same color sheeting, in the same position, feeling the same thing but with a different person, under different circumstances.

willing and able i am physically, but my mind replays the footage over and over.

~Honkai: Star Rail Women and How they Hug You~

Warnings: None, SFW.

Kafka is always hot. In every sense of the word.

Even in the heart of winter, she is a source of endless heat when you join her on the couch after missions. With her mauve hair loose, she is the personification of temptation as she languidly motions for you to come closer. Once you’re within reach, her fingers slide like liquid over your nape, pull you flush against her, with your head resting on either her shoulder or her generous chest.

She loves to talk low in your ear while she holds you like this, fingernails gently scratching at the base of your neck. Sometimes, she shares details about her missions. If she’s in a naughtier mood, however, expect the kinkiest things to fill your ears, until you’re blazing red.

Black Swan feels like a cool spring. A calm oasis for you to rest in, for however long you wish.

All you have to do is speak her name into the aether, and she will come to you, as soon as she is able. Be it after nightmares or long days, you always smile when you feel your bed dip with a familiar weight. Her graceful arms encircle your neck, guiding you onto her chest. If you’ve closed your eyes, overcome by the bliss, before you see her amused smile, then you will feel it on your skin when she kisses you.

Hugging her is heavenly. Like you’re enveloped in a cloud. Soft, fresh, plush in all the right places. And as soon as she asks you how her ‘dear’ or ‘darling’ is faring, if you missed her, that is when you utterly melt.

Acheron is steady and so very safe.

It’s like nothing in the world can touch you while you’re with her. She’s not one to initiate long embraces first, hesitant due to her powers, but if the two of you are alone she will often cast you a longing look that speaks volumes of how badly she wants to be close to you. One she hopes you don’t catch, even though you always do.

When she hugs you, her strong arms wrap around you like you are the most precious thing in the world. She likes to tuck her chin onto your shoulder, sometimes turn into your neck, breathing you in. Her body is firm from years of combat, but her skin is so soft to the touch. The corner of her lip always tugs upwards in amusement when you caress her abs (which is every chance you get).

Firefly is an absolute sweetheart.

Do you want to hold her? She will stop whatever she is doing and immediately come over to you. More often than not, she ends up curled into your lap with her arms around your shoulders. Adores nuzzling into your neck and pressing her cheek against yours like a little kitten. If you kiss her jaw or temple, she will melt in your arms.

Very sensitive. If your lips caress her neck, best believe she will make a sound and immediately turn tomato-red. No matter how long you’ve been together, flirting in this position will result in her cheeks growing hot. Which only makes you want to tease her that much more.

Robin is always a delight to hug. Cosy and sweet and soft.

She absolutely flushes at the smallest hint of PDA if other people are around, but she will not deny you ever. Behind closed doors is a different story though. The girl will come over to you and wrap her arms around you from behind, silently asking to be held because she’s often too shy to say it. If you toy with her hair, massage her back or nuzzle into her wings, she will shiver against you.

Likes to trace small shapes on your skin with her fingertips when you’re cuddling. Will die inside and go to heaven if you do it to her first. If you simply lay together, relaxing, she may start humming a tune by your ear in her angelic voice. A privilege reserved for her one and only <3

Himeko is soothing in every way. The way she smells, the way she touches you, the way she makes you feel.

She is gentle like the warmth of a fireplace after a long trudge through snow and she never gets tired of holding you. You don’t even have to ask. One look and she will know to come over and embrace you. If other members of your team are around, she establishes small points of contact, like an arm around your waist or a hand at the small of your back. Until you are alone, where she will fully guide you into her arms.

Loves to gently massage your back or run her thumb in small circles between your shoulderblades. Always exhales a soft chuckle if you kiss her collarbone and tell her how good she feels. You are so comfortable when you sleep against her perfect body that you have trouble sleeping without. Not that she minds this one bit.
