Still rotating the idea in my head of making a small, invite-only Cyberpunk Discord. Something newbie-friendly ideally, for exchanging headcanons, but also modding and other tips. Maybe even for playing together/streaming, be it just hanging out playing CP2077 side by side and yelling about favourite parts in the story, or even a hosting place for tabletop sessions and such. A lil hub for exchanging and hanging out and yeh xD

astro notes: jupiter through the houses pt.4
Symbolizing wisdom, luck, and spiritual growth, Jupiter guides us through journeys of abundance and higher learning. As it rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and co-rules Pisces with Neptune, its reach extends to philosophical pursuits, foreign travel, and spiritual exploration. From its exaltation in Cancer to its debilitation in Capricorn, Jupiter's placement illuminates our beliefs, aspirations, and sense of justice. Throughout this exploration of Jupiter's journey through the houses, we unravel its transformative power and guiding light, embracing its blessings of prosperity, abundance, and divine guidance.
Jupiter in the 10th House:
With Jupiter gracing your tenth house of career and public recognition, you are blessed with a strong sense of purpose and a deep desire to make a positive impact in the world. Your leadership abilities are strong, and you may find that you are drawn to positions of authority or influence where you can inspire and empower others.
Success in your career is likely with Jupiter in the tenth house, especially in fields such as education, law, or spirituality. You may find that you are respected and admired by your peers, and that you are able to achieve your goals with relative ease. Your optimism and self-confidence are infectious, and you may find that you are able to inspire others to believe in themselves and reach for their dreams.
However, it's important to guard against the tendency to become overly ambitious or power-hungry in your pursuit of success. With Jupiter's influence here, there may be a temptation to prioritize external recognition and material wealth over more meaningful measures of fulfillment and happiness. Remember to stay true to your values and principles, and to use your influence and resources for the greater good.
Overall, Jupiter in the tenth house blesses you with success, prosperity, and recognition in the public sphere. Embrace the blessings of leadership and achievement, and use them to create a positive impact in your community and beyond.
Jupiter in the 11th House:
With Jupiter gracing your eleventh house of social connections and community involvement, you are blessed with a wide network of friends and acquaintances who support and inspire you on your journey. Your social circle is diverse and eclectic, and you may find that you are drawn to people from all walks of life who share your ideals and values.
Your ability to connect with others and build meaningful relationships is one of your greatest strengths. You may find that you are a natural leader within your social group, and that you are able to rally others around common goals and aspirations. Your optimism and enthusiasm are infectious, and you may find that you are able to inspire others to join you in making a positive difference in the world.
Community involvement is especially favored with Jupiter in the eleventh house, and you may find that you are drawn to causes and organizations that promote social justice and equality. Your generosity knows no bounds, and you may find fulfillment in giving back to your community and making a difference in the lives of others.
However, it's important to guard against the tendency to become overly idealistic or unrealistic in your expectations of others. With Jupiter's influence here, there may be a temptation to believe that everyone shares your vision and values, and to become disillusioned when reality falls short of your expectations. Remember to celebrate the diversity of perspectives and experiences that exist within your social circle, and to embrace the opportunities for growth and learning that come from engaging with people who are different from yourself.
Overall, Jupiter in the eleventh house blesses you with a rich tapestry of social connections, community involvement, and opportunities for growth and expansion. Embrace the blessings of friendship and collaboration, and use them to create a brighter, more inclusive world for yourself and those around you.
Jupiter in the 12th House:
With Jupiter gracing your twelfth house of spirituality and transcendence, you are blessed with a deep sense of inner peace and a profound connection to the divine. Your spiritual journey is one of profound depth and significance, leading you to explore the mysteries of existence and the nature of the soul.
Your intuition is strong, and you may find that you are able to tap into hidden realms of wisdom and insight that lie beyond the realm of ordinary perception. Your dreams are vivid and prophetic, offering guidance and illumination on your path to self-discovery and enlightenment.
Charity and compassion are central to your sense of purpose, and you may find fulfillment in acts of selfless service and devotion to others. Your empathy knows no bounds, and you may find that you are drawn to support those who are suffering or marginalized in society. Your ability to offer comfort and solace to others is a gift that brings light and healing to the world.
However, it's important to guard against the tendency to become overly escapist or avoidant in your approach to life. With Jupiter's influence here, there may be a temptation to retreat into fantasy or illusion as a means of avoiding the harsh realities of existence. Remember to stay grounded in reality and to face your fears and challenges with courage and determination.
Overall, Jupiter in the twelfth house blesses you with spiritual insight, inner peace, and a deep sense of compassion for all beings. Embrace the blessings of transcendence and enlightenment, and use them to bring light and healing to yourself and the world around you.

Can We Still Find Common Ground?
Many Americans today worry that our nation is losing its national identity. Some claim loudly that the core of that identity requires better policing of our borders and preventing other races or religions or ethnicities from supplanting white Christian America.
But that is not what defines our national identity. It’s the ideals we share, the good we hold in common.
That common good is a set of shared commitments. To the rule of law. To democracy. To tolerance of our differences. To equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone. To upholding the truth.
We cannot have a functioning society without these shared commitments. Without a shared sense of common good, there can be no “we” to begin with.
If we’re losing our national identity, it is because we are losing our sense of the common good. That is what must be restored.
Some of you may feel such a quest to be hopeless. Well, I disagree.
Almost every day, I witness or hear of the compassion and generosity of ordinary Americans. Their actions rarely make headlines, but they constitute much of our daily life together.
The moral fiber of our society has been weakened but it has not been destroyed.
We can recover the rule of law and preserve our democratic institutions by taking a more active role in our democracy.
We can fight against all forms of bigotry. We can strengthen the bonds that connect us to one another.
We can protect the truth by using facts and logic to combat lies.
Together, we can rebuild a public morality that strengthens our democracy, makes our economy work for everyone, and revives trust in the institutions of the nation.
America is not made great by whom we exclude but by the ideals we uphold together.
We’ve never been a perfect union. Our finest moments have been when we have sought to live up to those shared ideals.
I hope you’ll join me in carrying forward the fight for the common good.
You might start by sharing this video with your friends and loved ones.

boyfriend headcannons - kwak jiseok
Tumblr media
☆彡 sorry for the delay on this one! I gotta wait for the delusions to hit juuust right before I write them LMAOOO hope you enjoy! 🫶🏻
word count: 812 | pronouns used: none | genre: fluff, established relationship | cws: all caps used, he’s a stem major (I don’t make the rules), teasing, not proofread, lmk if I missed anything!
← previous member | next member →
IT’S JISEOK TIIIIIMMMEEE
Jiseok doesn’t strike me with the same hardcore “boyfriend agenda” and Jungsu or Seungmin do, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a great boyfriend!!
there would literally never be a dull moment between the two of you
he’s such a good listener
much like Gunil, Jiseok looks at you like you hung the stars when you talk, and he never forgets a single detail
all of your favorite hobbies? your niche interests? he knows everything about all of them
you are both giant nerds but it’s okay!
while you might geek out over tv shows and bands, Jiseok geeks out over science
he’s such a loser (/pos) (and I love him for it)
he will never escape my stem major headcannon NEVER
but this also means that he would be a great help with homework if you’re also a science oriented person!
chemistry? he’s got you
biology? piece of cake
you know what he can’t do?
PDA
again, I’ve talked about this, but I need to elaborate more
Jiseok blushes and practically folds in on himself like a chair at the slightest mention on girls
it’s one of the things I find the most endearing about him
so imagine how he feels walking around with you
he is absolutely baffled that you chose to date him so he gets so giddy and excited when you show PDA
he literally can’t handle it because he just loves you so much and he gets so excited
he’s like a little kid in a candy store- he just can’t get enough
SPEAKING OF LITTLE KIDS
Jiseok, much like Jungsu, would be great with your siblings or cousins!
he would talk video games with the older kids
good around with the younger kids
gang up on you with your family, always taking their side instead of yours
playful feasting is definitely a love language of his!
I think Jiseok would score some mega points with the adults in your family and also with your friends!
they would all see that he’s both incredibly musically talented and book smart, plus he makes you happy so he’s literally the ideal man
the jack of all trades of boyfriends
the… boyfriend of all trades? okay moving on
your friends are JEALOUS
“Where did you find him? I need a boyfriend like that!”
TOO BAD go get your own this one is mine hee hee 🤭
such a polite man
his manners 📈📈 through the roof
his middle name is chivalry
he would be the sweetest, most loving boyfie around 🥹
if something is not to your liking he’s fixing it for you right away!
your wish is his command
okay we need to get back to the feasting real quick
he is so goofy
downright odd
but we love him
I can fully imagine him hiding behind a corner or doorway just to pop out and scare you 💀
harmless pranks all the time
prank wars are very common between the two of you
you have a lot of very strange inside jokes that other people would literally need code to decipher because they wouldn’t make any sense to anyone else
Jiseok is always down for an adventure!
the most basic tasks feel fun with him because he knows exactly how to keep a good energy flowing!
but he can be serious too, don’t get me wrong
long, serious phone calls after a bad day at work or while he’s away are very common
he’s not afraid to get emotional with you!
Jiseok gubes me the vibe that if you cry, he’s gonna cry too (same tbh)
he just cares about you so deeply and he’s never felt that way about anyone else
he shows his love and appreciation for you in any way he can, no matter how odd
he buys you things that make him think of you
he probably has your work/school schedule memorized so he knows when he needs to make dinner or pitch in around the house because you might be busy
if you use a purse I can imagine him holding it for you and calling it his “murse” LMAOO
I feel like he would give you an assigned animal too? idk just a thought
“Well if I’m a duck then you have to be a goose because of duck duck goose.”
his logic? flawless
if you don’t know how to play already, be prepared for guitar lessons
if you don’t want the lessons, at least be ready for concerts
he will make up songs (sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re not) or learn your favorite songs and perform them for you
and you will always be there in the front row :)
god I love Jiseok
at the end of the day, your relationship is lighthearted, fun, and Jiseok feels very lucky to have you in his life 🩷

One of my favourite finnish words, which is somewhat of a neologism, is sääntöuskovainen. A lot of finnish nouns come from verbs with different suffixes, and the word "religion", uskonto, is one of the -nto ones, like
asunto - apartment - from "asua", "to live [in a place]"
keksintö - invention - from "keksiä", "to invent, to come up with"
lausunto - statement, verdict - from "lausua", "to pronounce, to speak out, to recite"
avanto - a hole which has been cut into ice - from "avata", "to open"
käytäntö - custom, convention, policy - from "käyttää", "to use"
So the words with the -nto suffix are somewhat of a flexible collection of "a thing which exists for this purpose, or was born from this action/activity". And the word uskonto comes from "uskoa", to believe in. Finnish has a handful of different verbs for believing something, but uskoa is the one for trusting in something, having faith in it, relying on the knowledge that something is the way one believes it is. There's a different word for not being sure of something, but suspecting that it might be true (arvella), and believing something that is wrong altogether (luulla).
So the word uskovainen, religious person, literally "believer", doesn't strictly clarify that the thing one believes in is a matter of faith, save for that being the most common and conventional use. The word "sääntö" simply means "rule" (and while it looks like one, it is actually not one of the noun-from-verb types mentioned earlier), so the word sääntöuskovainen more or less means "rule-religious". And while it could be interpreted as "person who practices their religion by strictly committing to the religion's rules", I've mainly seen it used the other way around: A person who commits to any given rules with the same reverence as a religious person practices their religion.
My sister used to have a rule-religious dog. A shepherd breed, highly intelligent, with the kind of ridig sense of righteousness and duty that medieval ideals of chivalry could only aspire for. Sirius was wasted as a family dog, to be honest. He could be set loose to the yard with no leash to go pee and play because you could absolutely trust that he would not leave the premises, he Was Not Allowed to do that with no leash on. He could do his business and throw some toys around with someone just standing at the door to supervise. Once called back inside, he could be trusted to drop everything and obey.
The dogs we had at the time had outdoor toys and indoor toys, and an understanding that they can't take inside doors outside, or outside toys outside. But this one time when I was letting him out, he managed to smuggle an inside toy out with him. I figured that screw it, he's already out with it, might as well let him play with it out there just this once. When his time was up and it was time to call him back in, he dropped the toy. I gestured him to pick up first, and bring it back inside with him.
Sirius halted, staring at me. I don't think I'm stretching it much to say that he hesitated. He had understood and followed commands more complex than that before, I have no doubt that he understood perfectly what I wanted him to do. I repeated my words and gestures, pointing at the toy and telling him what to do with it. He looked at the toy, and then back to me. Very rare dogs have the capacity to understand human gestures as nuanced as pointing at something, some even claim that no such dogs exist, but they do, and Sirius was one of them. He understood exactly what I wanted him to do.
I wanted him to break the rules. Outdoor Toys do not go indoors. He had already broken the law once by bringing it out with him, and as far as he was concerned, it had now become an outside toy. And in his heart full of canine concept of justice and righteousness, The Rules were absolute, and would not be compromised. Not even to follow a clear and explicit human command to go against them.
I had to put my shoes on and go get the toy myself.

BEWARE OF FAMI
Tumblr media
I need you to follow me on this but... I like to find answers to questions raised by new chapters in previous ones.
As I've often said, even if Fujimoto likes to set up funny or seemingly innocuous scenes, nothing is innocuous and everything has a meaning. Nothing could be more normal than for a film fan to follow Chekov's rule of the gun.
But here our rifle is not a rifle, nor is it a chainsaw. It's a fridge.
Tumblr media
Didn't it strike you as odd when, in one of the previous chapters, Denji introduced the rules set down by Nayuta, rules that seemed like common sense, like don't rummage in the fridge.
Tumblr media
Now let's connect the dots. I don't think Nayuta set up these rules with Fami in mind, but it's just a more meta reading key that Fujimoto gives us. A key to understanding which side Fami is on.
Don't open the fridge = don't contract Fami.
Fami seems harmless and extremely funny, wanting to save mankind for the pleasure of eating pizzas and swallowing bread faster than her shadow. But there are a few things I'd like us to understand.
If Makima has made you remember one thing, it's that you shouldn't trust the characters' claims: as far as I'm concerned, those at the head of Chainsaw Man, notably Fami and the fake Chainsaw Man, want to give all their power to a new chainsaw demon, making the real Chainsaw Man weaker and more ineffective. By literally taking the wind out of his sails and setting up a new champion: Asa Mitaka.
Tumblr media
Part 2 focuses on parasocial relationships. You really don't find this page strange? I've seen a lot of people rave about how badass Asa has become. PRECISELY! She's not supposed to be, we've seen that Asa wasn't made to be a heroine (I don't mean that in a negative way). The sword must be something that belongs to her: so what's in her hands? She's clumsy, so why does she look so confident? The only way she can fight properly is when she's possessed by Yoru: where are the marks?
All this to say that this page does not represent Asa Mitaka. It's a rumor, a collective opinion that people project onto her, maybe even a rumor. In any case, just like people with Chainsaw Man: an idealized portrait.
Seriously, don't you think that between Yoshida's dilemma and Fami's, we're trying to paralyze Chainsaw Man as much as possible? Isn't it contradictory to want to help Chainsaw Man by depriving him of his function? By inviting his intentions?
The aim is not to help Chainsaw Man, but to weaken him, to paralyze him, to bring to the fore not a first, a second, but a third Chainsaw Man.
Tumblr media
No, Fami is not an ally.

There Is No Such Thing As Justice With Chainsaw Man
正義の味方: the Ally of Justice. This is a concept that runs through Japanese hero stories, from cop dramas to Kamen Rider and now to Chainsaw Man. It begins in 1958 with the mysterious figure of Moonlight Mask.
Tumblr media
Moonlight Mask (月光仮面) is Japan’s first Superhero Tokusatsu (practical effects based film such as Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Godzilla, etc.) The series follows a simple formula, one of the “Skull Masks,” a group of international spies that wears well…skull masks, will be running some evil scheme in their effort to acquire the “Joe-engine Bomb,” a secret weapon developed by Japanese scientists.
When the Skull Masks’ villainous ways put innocents in danger, there appears the masked man, Ally of Justice, Moonlight Mask, riding on his motorcycle, with automatic pistol in hand. He only shoots to disarm, never to kill, forgives his enemies and never takes a life. He uses his superhuman (?) strength to protect the weak.
One interesting aspect of Moonlight Mask is that no one, not even the audience, has the hero’s hidden identity confirmed. It is implied through the storytelling that the great detective Juurou and Moonlight are one and the same, but even the credits don’t reveal his identity: Moonlight, played by “?”
This concept of Justice — a faceless, benevolent protector — is the foundation of Japanese super hero stories. You can see its influence in the Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Sailor Moon, and you can see it’s negation in Chainsaw Man.
Tumblr media
Denji is notable amongst Shonen heroes for his unclear ethics. More than his unfiltered sexuality, his lack of education or his meager material conditions, this is what makes him especially relatable.
Other heroes in the Moonlight Mask tradition are driven by a particular sense of morality, of Justice, and they act to protect that idea of what is right and wrong. But the rules they are bound by exist beyond the law and order of civil society. Moonlight Mask never kills, not because killing is illegal, but because it is wrong. His motto: “Don’t hate, don’t kill, forgive.”
Denji does not have a meaningful code. Nor does he have a particularly meaningful dream. His goals are mundane and his morality is common. He doesn’t want to hurt people, he doesn’t want to let them die, and he is kind. But this isn’t motivated by a coherent philosophy. And it doesn’t spur him to action. It is, if anything, a point of confusion.
Tumblr media
This makes Denji realistic, because individuals rarely have a coherent ethical system by which they evaluate their choices. People make the choices that they do because of who they are, whether those choices are coherent or not. Choices aren’t computations or evaluations, they are the endpoints of a story.
This is Fujimoto’s brand of existentialism, not unlike Kierkegaard’s, but with less freedom. Denji creates the meaning of his existence from what he sees around him — he decides his own dreams — but this doesn’t grant him the sublime freedom to take a leap of faith. Rather, it is an act of necessity, something that you cannot help but do. You need to dream to keep moving forward.
Ethics, then, is not a dispassionate evaluation, but an encounter between a person’s intrinsic drive for a better life and the reality of the world. Regardless of choices being right or wrong, people still do what they do for reasons rooted in the life they have lived. This is the reality of how choices are made, rather than an ideal designed for passing judgement.
Tumblr media
On the contrary, the villains in Chainsaw Man are exactly those people who believe that they can pass judgement. The Allies of Justice are not heroes who protect the weak, they are villains who use their moral code to justify selfish action. And that is the root of evil: they are dishonest with their selfish life.
Yuko is an example of this. Yuko wants to save Asa because she wants to be seen as a hero, like Chainsaw Man, but she justifies it by casting herself as an Ally of Justice, a protector of the weak, like Moonlight Mask. Unlike Moonlight Mask, she doesn’t follow some abstract code. Her inflated ego leads her to justify violence, and ultimately transforms her into a devil.
Tumblr media
Asa, on the other hand, is genuinely selfish in her actions. She makes choices based on what she wants to be right, regardless of the outcome. She doesn’t hide her selfish intent behind a moral excuse; she is selfishly moral: she acts as she wants the world to be, rather than giving in to what it is.
This is closer to Kierkegaard, but again, there is no faith. Asa doesn’t have to believe the world is good. This is the selfish aspect. She decides what the good choice is based on her moral intuition, then tries to make that real, even if it is a risk. This is Fujimoto’s heroism: the bravery to be wrong.
This Justice, this heroism, is consistent but dependent. It’s not the same as relativism because Yuko was wrong. She wasn’t being honest with her dreams. She was selfish, but not living selfishly.
Tumblr media
This is why there is no Justice with Chainsaw Man. Because what is right isn’t about an abstract Justice which you defend. The hero isn’t a faceless detective, stripped of his name, who appears from the shadows the save you from a similarly faceless evil. The hero is just a kid, just some girl, just a person who has lived a life which has led to a moment, and in that moment makes a choice, adds to their story.
Chainsaw Man isn’t a story with Justice, it is a story about Justice. A story about how Justice is created in the search for happiness. And right now, Denji has lost his drive. He has lost sight of who he wants to be — which is good to some degree, as he l still clings to sexual impulse — but has yet to discover what good he wants to create, what he wants to believe the world should be.
There is No Justice With Chainsaw Man
Yet.

Cosmere Characters as the Twelve Olympians
[Spoilers throughout! Please assume that each entry will contain spoilers for the character mentioned through the most recent book for that character--aka, spoilers for Rhythm of War in the Navani entry, spoilers for Warbreaker in the Blushweaver entry, etc.]
Hey look, I’m using my Classical Studies PhD for something! :D Anyway, here’s my take on which Cosmere characters would be best suited to take on the roles of various gods from the Greek Pantheon. And yes, there are 13 here since like everything in Greek mythology, the canon members of the Olympic Pantheon are disputed.
1. Zeus: Gavilar (Stormlight Archives)
Zeus is the head of Olympian gods, the king of kings, and a Grade A jerk-ass who is often cruel to his wife, lovers, kids, etc. Gavilar has a lot in common! In the Theogony, Zeus ends a generations-long war among the gods through force and cleverness, much as Gavilar “unites” Alethkar. Zeus is held up as the emblematic king, and Gavilar is now a kingly symbol as well. Yet in his private life, Zeus is a total asshole to his wife Hera and is cruel to any of his kids that he sees as “flawed” (like tossing Hephaestus right over the side of Olympus). Gavilar is abusive towards Navani and not a great father either. So in terms of both accomplishments & flaws, Gavilar would make a great Zeus. That’s not a compliment.
2. Hera: Jasnah (Stormlight Archives)
[Note: the relationships among the gods are disregarded for this list! I’m not saying Jasnah is married to her father!]
Hera is the queen of the gods, and she does tend to get a bad rap in mythology; most of her stories are about her jealously tormenting various women whose only crime is being assaulted by Zeus. But in general, Hera is a protector of women and a standard of femininity: in her cult and in her statuary, she is regality and femininity personified. Jasnah is always meticulous in her presentation and looks like the ideal Alethi woman. In her scholarship she promotes and protects women, but she is also no stranger to resorting to violence when she deems it necessary--sometimes violence that others may feel is too far. Like when she kills a bunch of criminals to teach Shallan Philosophy or when she literally has an assassin on retainer, planning to kill Aesudan. Jasnah may not act out of jealousy as Hera usually does, but both of them are perfectly willing to kill in service of larger aims. Also, much as Hera has a bad reputation, so too is Jasnah denigrated as a heretic. And finally, Jasnah is now literally the queen.
3. Poseidon: Queen Fen or Kaladin (Stormlight Archives)
Man, I really had a hard time with Poseidon, god of the sea and patron of sailors. In terms of the sea-faring aspect, Queen Fen felt the closest: she rules a coastal city and is literally a patron of sailors. So she works in a literal sense.
If we’re thinking of Poseidon more as “the other powerful one” (since Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades are the three brothers who divide control of the world) and as the “earth-shaker,” then I could see an argument for Kaladin. Kaladin is closely associated with the Stormfather, who does all of the earth-shaking and storm-brewing on Roshar, and Kaladin rides his storm. But mostly, I’m not gonna lie, I just think it would be funny for Kaladin to be the god of horses.
4. Demeter: Raboniel or Rlain (Stormlight Archives)
Demeter is the goddess of agriculture, so Raboniel was probably not your first thought. But listen, the Hymn to Demeter concentrates on how Demeter reacts to her daughter Persephone being taken by Hades. Demeter first searches frantically, then simply halts all agriculture until Zeus is ready to negotiate. And when I think of someone who will do literally anything to help her daughter, no matter who might be harmed in the process...I honestly think Raboniel, who created a god-killing weapon that could be used against her own people in order to end the suffering of her daughter. Plus, Demeter is both someone who halts all agriculture, dooming humanity, but also tries to turn a baby into a god in thanks for a human family’s hospitality. And Raboniel too is both ruthless and oddly generous to those she respects, as her relationship with Navani demonstrates.
Or there is Rlain, who is currently helping the people of Urithiru figure out how to farm through singing, much as Demeter taught agriculture to Triptolemus. Plus, Rlain lived among the humans as a spy, which reminds me somewhat of Demeter living among the humans while pretending to be one. And Demeter does try to bridge the human-divine gap by turning baby Demophon into a god, and Rlain is trying to bring humans & singers together.
5. Aphrodite: Blushweaver (Warbreaker)
Aphrodite is the goddess of love and sex, and Blushweaver really is the obvious counterpart here. Like Aphrodite, Blushweaver is a gorgeous, well, goddess who is open about her sexuality and who embraces pleasure. Especially in her Roman incarnation, Aphrodite is also a guide and supporter for her heroic son Aeneas, which is somewhat similar to Blushweaver’s role in getting Lightsong to, well, get off his ass and do something. Finally--and forgive me in advance--in the Iliad Aphrodite tries to get involved in the Trojan War and it goes badly for her, and Blushweaver also meets a bad end after trying to be involved in martial politics. Although, like, Aphrodite just gets stabbed in the hand and Blushweaver dies so the two aren’t that similar.
6. Athena: Azure or Jasnah (Stormlight Archives)
Athena is the goddess of war and wisdom--so more like strategy and cunning in war, rather than sheer violence (for that, please see Ares below). Athena leaps fully formed from Zeus’ head, already fully armed, and is the patron of heroes like Odysseus. From the perspective of her men, Captain Azure just sort of appears and seizes charge of the city guard, and she uses both good strategic sense and fighting prowess to protect the city. She also dominates in the traditionally male field of warfare and helps out a bunch of men, which are things Athena also does.
But I also want to recognize that Jasnah would make a good Athena if I hadn’t already used Jasnah for Hera, which is my personal preference. Jasnah has the intelligence, the wisdom, and the sheer fighting prowess (she fights on the front lines in one book). Jasnah also nourishes a hero (Shallan) which again suits Athena.
7. Artemis: Shallan (Stormlight Archives)
Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and of wild nature. The “hunting” aspect first drew me to Shallan, considering that as a member of the Ghostbloods, Shallan is always hunting something or someone. Shallan also has a keen interest in nature, studying cremlings for fun, going on archaeological missions to the Shattered Plains, and being sad when that chasmfiend that was trying to eat them died. Artemis is also no stranger to bloody violence, like when she turned Acteon into a deer to be torn apart by his own dogs (ouch) because he spied on her bathing. And Shallan is no stranger to poetic justice, as when she strangles her own father with the necklace he gifted her.
8. Apollo: Lightsong or Renarin (Warbreaker, Stormlight Archives)
Apollo is the god of light, music, prophecy, and healing. I have to use Lightsong here given that his name SCREAMS Apollo--light and song! Plus, Lightsong has the powers of prophecy and of healing, and he is a fan of beauty and luxury. Lightsong is also super hot, as Apollo (knows that he) is.
Renarin is another character who possesses both future sight and healing powers, which is an Apollo-esque combo. I will say that I don’t see as much of a match personality-wise between Apollo and Renarin, since I like Renarin whereas Apollo does things like curse Cassandra for not having sex with him and hunts Daphne until she has to turn into a tree to escape. Like, Renarin literally would never.
9. Ares: Dalinar or Vin (Stormlight Archives, Mistborn)
Athena is the god of strategy in war, whereas Ares is the god of combat itself, in the sense of sheer, unrelenting, somewhat mindless violence. Honestly, the Thrill in the Stormlight books would be a good approximation of Ares’ power: it gives a person incredible fighting prowess, but with no real sense of any larger concerns of strategy or logic. So Dalinar as a fighter who understands and has embraced the Thrill would make a good Ares--a more tempered one than the Ares of mythology, if we’re being honest. And in a similar vein, Vin is also very, very good at wreaking incredible havoc. She slices through entire armies, cuts people in half with swords, kills a god...she would also make an excellent Ares. And since Vin basically has godlike status as of Mistborn Era 2, she’s nearly in this role already!
10. Hephaestus: Navani (Stormlight Archives)
Hephaestus is a craftsman god, especially blacksmithing and metalworking. He also has an unhappy marriage, as he is married to Aphrodite who barely gives him the time of day in most stories (she’s busy getting it on with Ares). Navani is an inventor of fabrials and a patron of others. She’s the one who manages to invent god-killing weapons in Rhythm of War, which is very Hephaestus-coded. She’s also no stranger to an unhappy marriage with a spouse who mistreats her. Finally, one little story about Hephaestus in the Iliad is how he keeps the peace among the bickering Olympians, which is reminiscent of how Navani has to keep the peace among the Alethi nobility back when Gavilar used to leave all of that to her.
11. Hermes: Hoid (all books)
In the Hymn to Hermes, Hermes is a trickster figure with one goal in mind: getting admitted to Olympus by any means necessary. And he does this by tormenting Apollo with various tricks, all the while taking advantage of the fact that he just born yesterday--how could Hermes the innocent little baby do anything bad?? Anyway. Hoid is also a trickster figure who loves disguises and false names and doing whatever is necessary to get what he wants. Hermes is also an inventor and storyteller, and Hoid has those qualities as well. Finally, Hermes in other iterations is a guide, someone who can lead a hero through dark places. And Hoid takes on that role too, guiding people like Shallan or Kaladin through some of the darkest periods of their lives.
12. Hestia: Rock (Stormlight Archives)
Hestia is the goddess of hearth and home, and she’s associated with the fire in the hearth. To me, this is reminiscent of Rock whose stew is the central place of belonging for Bridge 4. Rock also does not fight--and neither does Hestia, who is one of the few gods who lacks any mythology about vengeance or violence. Instead, Hestia is the deity who makes sure you have a home.
13. Dionysus: Adolin (Stormlight Archives)
Dionysus is the god of wine, indulgence, and gender fuckery. And I know the obvious candidates for a Dionysus are the Returned from Warbreaker, but I’ve already used them. And I think I can make a case for Adolin! Adolin likes his wine and his women, and thanks to his relationship with his mom, he acts in ways that seem unmasculine to the Alethi--like being more physically affectionate and emotive. And Dionysus too had an un-Greek heritage that made the Greeks read him as foreign in the Bacchae. Plus, Dionysus does ultimately end up in a stable relationship with Ariadne, much like Adolin with Shallan. Finally, Dionysus is something of a shit-stirrer; when he shows up in Bacchae he turns that town upside down. And let’s not forget how Adolin murdered a high prince and is one of the few main characters to have not bonded a spren. He goes his own way. Sometimes violently. But mostly he knows what he likes and he’s not afraid to show it.

An unhinged Elden Ring fashion deep dive
So yesterday, I had A Moment and I ended up feverishly researching every item description for the nobles’ embroidered robes for like 2 hours. While doing so, I discovered that there’s actually a pretty distinct culture around clothing for the nobles of the Lands Between! The costume design in this game is so outrageously good.
Tumblr media
Putting this under the cut, as this is going to get long:
Robes
All robes are embroidered in a similar fashion, with slight variations that change with each color. It seems like the nobles who wear this style of robe are the nobles in regions sworn to Leyndell, including Limgrave and the Altus Plateau. The Carian royals in Liurnia notably dress differently, as they are independent and have their own distinct culture. Let’s look at each type of robe individually:
1. Upper-Class Robe: “Embroidered, bright green robe worn by noble children. Donning such a robe is traditionally the child's first show of burgeoning independence.”
Rya wears these robes, as she is Lady Tanith’s adopted daughter and thus a noble child.
2. Ruler’s Robe: “Luxurious robe worn by lords in a smaller nation. Its fine blue mantle serves to prove its wearer's status.”
I believe that “lords in a smaller nation” refers to the vassal lords of Leyndell and the smaller domains they rule over, such as Mt. Gelmir or Fort Haight. Kenneth Haight wears these robes.
I am assuming that the blue mantle serves to distinguish a fully fledged lord from a noble child, as the description says that the mantle proves the wearer’s status.
3. Consort’s Robe: “Fine robe of white silk worn by Tanith, Lady of the Volcano Manor.”
Though Tanith is our only example, I believe that the name implies that all consorts of lords would wear these white robes.
4. Official’s Robe: “Grubby blue robe worn by magisterial officials to carry out their grim tasks. Surveillance, executions, gruesome rituals... The darkest duties drive the wheels of mankind.”
These robes are worn by Inquisitor Ghiza, who served as Rykard’s executioner while he was Praetor.
5. Marais Robe: “Robe with a black mantle across the shoulders. Customarily worn by the head of House Marais.”
This robe, worn by Maleigh Marais, is exactly the same as the Official’s Robe, and indeed, the description for the Marais Mask adds that “The Marais family has a dual history spanning generations, serving as both executioners and castellans of the Shaded Castle.” House Marais is described as carrying out similar duties to Inquisitor Ghiza’s—both descriptions use the term “execution”. So it makes sense that they would wear the Officials’ Robes as a house that does dirty work for their domain.
The black mantle is probably an added flair piece to show that this is an old, long-lived family with a history.
Tumblr media
Masks
Masks are surprisingly important to the culture of these nobles! Every image I’ve included at the top of the post (except for Rya) includes a mask or some kind of face covering. I think we can glean some information about the role of masks in society from this first mask:
1. Ruler’s Mask: “Mask in the image of a wizened sage. Customary dress among lords in a smaller nation. […] Such a mask illustrates the qualities of an ideal lord: chiefly, wise and possessing a certain defanged geniality. One at the center of society often finds these qualities most expedient.”
This description implies to me that the purpose of wearing a specific mask is to communicate the qualities that you desire to embody as a noble. Basically, it shows how you want to be perceived in society.
Again, it uses the phrase “in a smaller nation,” so it’s the noble vassals of Leyndell who are dressing like this.
2. Consort’s Mask: “Mask worn by Tanith, Lady of the Volcano Manor, in the image of a foreign queen. […] Long ago, when Rykard first set eyes on Tanith, she was working as a dancer in a foreign land. Soon, he made her his consort.”
It’s interesting that Tanith is common-born, but her mask is specifically in the image of a foreign queen. I think Tanith wears this mask to project an image of regal power, so that the nobles of the Lands Between are more likely to respect her despite her being both a foreigner and a commoner.
3. Marais Mask: “Mask in the image of a white-haired young noble. Customarily worn by the head of House Marais. […] The Marais family has a dual history spanning generations, serving as both executioners and castellans of the Shaded Castle. This mask bears the likeness of the first of their line.”
This mask is modeled off of the founding member of House Marais. Just as with the black mantle on the Marais Robe, this mask serves to highlight the longevity of House Marais. This mask tells us that this is a house that is proud of its history and forebears.
Image 6 - The Volcano Manor mystery portrait
This portrait can be found in Volcano Manor, and there have been many theories on who it depicts! This figure wears a mask that appears to have a beard, a crown with a red cowl, and a green Upper-Class Robe. After having done all this research, I think the most convincing theory is that this is… Rykard himself! Boring, I know. But I think the reasons why I believe it’s him have some interesting implications:
I think this portrait was painted when Rykard first established Volcano Manor, and was sworn to Leyndell. He wears the customary attire of a young noble—a green Upper-Class Robe and a mask that resembles his own face (he’s the only member of his family with a beard). In his early days as Praetor, this is how Rykard would have dressed to fit in with the Altus Plateau’s other nobility.
Rykard’s other portraits were clearly painted after he rebuked the Golden Order and committed blasphemy—he is decked out in snake-themed attire, and snakes are said to be enemies of the Erdtree. So he probably wouldn’t have always dressed like this.
Honestly I can’t think of anyone else who this person could be where it would make sense for them to be wearing a green robe. Rykard didn’t have kids at the time, there was no other lord of Volcano Manor, and if they were a consort or an official, they would be wearing white or blue. Unless the robe IS blue, and this is a case of Volcano Manor’s frustrating color-warping lighting.
And that’s it! Let me know if I missed anything! If you made it this far, thank you for indulging my mental illness

have you ever wanted to use AITA as a writing medium? okay, okay, everyone's at least thought about making up a scenario, but what about actually telling a story?
this blog is for writing original stories in the AITA format. don't send in scenarios from published fiction or real life or you will be bitten. we won't be actively monitoring for that but come on. @aita-blorbos exists. so does @am-i-the-asshole-official.
when submitting a story, include a unique title and whether it's open or closed to additions from other people at the top, along with any notes or warnings you want to give. if you want to make the story closed, your ask must be sent off anon so we can make sure no one hijacks it (but we recommend sending your writing off anon anyway).
when continuing a story, include the original story's title and make sure to respect the established canon. refrain from sending continuations from the perspective of the original post's pov character unless you're op or the story's op specifically said that's allowed.
all entries in a story will be tagged with that story's title and any appropriate warnings.
rules:
this is for original writing. fanfic is allowed for now, but must be disclosed and may be banned if it starts overwhelming the blog.
a maximum of two characters per story may be given single letters as pseudonyms. ideally, use actual names or descriptors for all characters in your story.
you aren't limited to realistic scenarios. putting fantastical elements into your story is welcome.
the op of a story may lay down rules for it or change the story's status between closed and open at any time.
no porn, please. if there's enough demand for it, though, we or someone else can open a second blog.
there are common sense and basic decency rules. don't make us have to actually say what they are. you're better than that.
we can change these rules whenever we want to or feel the need to.

who is the godly parent to each of the batboys
oh boy oh boy, I got carried away :) whoops
The Batfam's Godly Parentage
word count: 3,070
warnings: reference to Jason's death, reference to Barbara's disability
This is purely based off of the Greek Pantheon (Camp-Half Blood in Percy Jackson) because the other pantheons (Roman, Norse, & Kemetic) would be a very different conversation. Bruce would so be a child of Odin, don't EVEN—
Alfred Pennyworth
Alfred has always been known as the nuturing father figure for the batfam so it would make sense for his healing nature to be granted from Apollo
Apollo may be the god of the sun, but he's also the god of healing, medicine, and truth
Alfred heals not just with his hands, bandaging all the wounds of the family and taking care of their ailments, but he also heals with his heart
He is warm, kind, and comforting
His aura radiates safety and nurturment
Alfred also heals with his cooking by using the medicinal properties of herbs
Working at the clinic at Camp-Half Blood would feel so natural to him because he could calm any camper with just his prescence
He also gives the best advice, always
He's learned from his own life experience and doesn't mind sharing stories of years long past
And with Apollo being the god of truth, Alfred's advice and insight would be just as powerful
But Alfred is also someone who should not be crossed
He can be terrifying when he needs to be, he can also be ruthless
Apollo may be the god of healing, but he is also the god of plagues and diseases
He can wipe out continents with a single breath
So Alfred may seem warm and soft, but he is capable of much more
He is a combat medic is willing to sift through pain if it means bring comfort
With a house so warm and inviting, it didn't take long for Alfred to catch the eye of Hestia
The lonely goddess and Alfred would soon become close, for the hearth of the home could even be extended to the goddess herself
Afternoon tea became a common occurance between the two
Bruce Wayne
Bruce, the father of this found family, takes after his own godly father Zeus in more ways than one
Zeus may be popularly known as the god of lightning, storms, and the sky, but he's much more
Zeus rules over the other gods as their King, he is a regal and mature figure who is sturdy to lean on
He offers guidance to heroes and starts them on their journeys before watching them become their own hero
Bruce is much the same
He is strong and kind to his family and will always be there as their pillar of support
He is as unyielding as a mountain
He makes resources for success accessible to anyone who needs it
Bruce also has the might and courage that Zeus does
But in terms of attributes, Zeus is the god of law and order
Bruce works alongside law enforcement to make it better, to hold it to a higher standard
He enacts proper order where the police won't
He has rules and a code that follows his ideals of law and order
But more than that, Zeus is the god of fate and destiny
Bruce is definitely someone who upholds fate by forging his own
Zeus and fate have always been intertwined as Zeus creates pathways and free-will
Bruce is no different
Dick Grayson
Dick and Percy are incredibly similar, so chosing Poseidon was instantaneous
Poseidon is often depicted as the most "human" of the gods, his care for his family is as deep as the ocean and his humor is ever changing
Dick reflects this easily, he is highly empathetic and will always be a guide to those around him when he is needed
Otherwise, he will happily poke fun at his little brothers to maintain a positive atmosphere
He's charismatic and humorous, something he'd take from Poseidon---one of the most charismatic of the gods
He was a playboy, but his heart loves deeply
Poseidon is also stubborn and can have a temper, he is the god of the sea
So Dick, the sweet son, can be gentle and angry in the same breath
Tides often turn suddenly and ferociously
Dick can control beach waves that just barely salt your skin, a gentle breeze flowing by
But he can also conjure up terrifying tsunamis and hurricanes
Dick has worked very hard to control his temper, but it's still a part of him
You cannot have a storm without a calm exterior
Dick is always shown as a loving goofball, but much like Percy, he is also the one who can control poison when pushed too far
He loves hard and will do just about anything to protect those he loves
Poseidon and Percy are similar in the fact that their fatal flaw is loyalty, Dick follows the same path
Barbara Gordon
Barbara is one of the many brains behind this family and the way it operates, her main specialty however, has always been tech
A daughter of Hephaestus would be able to swiftly manevour across various forms of technology to make things move efficiently
Hephaestus is the patron of inventors and craftsmanship
Barbara is the Oracle, the watcher and the technological genius
He is the god who built many accessories that became the reason behind certain heroes' success—Barbara is the same
She may be the person unseen, but she is the backbone of the Batfamily and they would not be nearly as successful as they are without her
But the similarties between Hephaestus and Barbara end there
Often in the Percy Jackson series, godly heritage is a warning of what could come, but the beauty of it is that you can learn from it
Hephaestus is often bitter at the sight of perfection, one extreme on the pendulum while Barbara sits at the other
Babs suffers as a perfectionist and even moreso as a moral perfectionist
Neither is healthy, but they can learn from one another
They both bury themselves into their work and spend days on end deep into a project, refusing to leave until it is completed
Work ethic is something the Hephaestus cabin knows all too well
Hephaestus is also known as the god who seemed "broken" for he was not beautiful enough in the face of perfection
So he turned to machines, something that could never fail him, and if broken, he could easily fix—his way of finding control
Barbara's fate could have been the same
One bullet completely changed her life forever, and in the eyes of the masses, she would always be seen as "broken beyond repair"
But in the face of her father's destiny, she forged her own
She learned that humans can never be broken, only wounded
She learned to use her disabilities as strengths and to not define herself under them
She is still powerful, beautiful, intelligent, and strong
Nothing could break that, not even a bullet
Jason Todd
Jason and his path mirror Nico Di Angelo's to an insane degree, it was easy to describe Jason as a child of Hades
Jason was always a nerdy kid who pulled pranks and had wide toothy smiles, but a single event changed him completely
After his death, Jason could never be the same kid he once was
That kid could smile at the face of fear with just a tint of sarcasm to hide behind
But now, he was a man who clawed his way back from the deepest pits of the Underworld, survived Tartarus, and whose mind would forever be tainted by pit-madness
Hades may be the god of the Underworld, but it's what he represents that shows up in Jason
Hades is the god of weath and earthy riches that represents determination, resilience, and strength—sturdiness in the face of hardship
Jason will always be the person who persevered who survived
He is the outcast who had no other choice but to create a home that could someday become a safe haven for other outcasts—something Hades did as well
But Hades also oversees judgement, he is the unbiased and unwavering judge who is nothing but fair
Hades has a code and sticks to it, even in the face of death
Jason is the same
Jason is the judge for those who deserve it, he is fair in who he sends to the afterlife
As a child of Hades, he would be a mirror of that divine judgement in the upper realms
But much like Nico Di Angelo, the madness in your brain shouldn't be sorted out alone
After his death and resurrection, Jason's pit-madness was all consuming as it was encompassing
There was only one god he could turn to in his time of need: Dionysus, the god of chaos and madness
Jason didn't have to suffer through his trauma alone, he learned from his father's destiny that he could find his family to rely on, he could find his own family built on trust
Dionysus became the guide for Jason during his darkest hour, listening to the craze without judgement, for this was the god who was crude and whose eyes held madness, too
Jason could grow and heal but only through facing his deepest torments and knowing that part of him still deserved love
Yet when you see the darkest parts of the world and see who put you there, its hard not to develop the fatal flaw of grudges
Jason is a bargainer, he will never forget a debt unpaid
Cassandra Cain
Cassandra was trained from birth to become a weapon, enough that every second of her life would revolve around her training—it's far too engrained
Her eyes could percieve things that no one else seemed to be able to and her abilities transcended those around her
As a child of Hecate, those gifts would always be there
Hecate is the goddess of magic and all that encompasses it
She controls the mist that disguises that which people shouldn't see
Cass would follow suit
She can see through the mist, see things as they truly are, and manipulate their disguise to her advantage
Cass works silently and imperceivably, the mist works the same way
She could float through the mist and hide behind it, only to be seen by those she allows or those that can see through it like she can
Hecate is also the goddess of the night and moon, she works in the dark and often alone
Cass has always worked best when in solitude, the night is a comfort to her
But Hecate is also the goddess of crossroads, of decisions and their pathways
Because of this, Hecate is often seen as a liminal deity, a deity that floats between entrances and realms
As a child of that force, Cass will always feel out of place, like she's floating between groups but never belonging
But at a crossroad, the path you choose will become set in stone
Cassandra's uniqueness will always be a part of her, her abilities that seem to place her just beyond her peers
But with one choice, she can settle into a family that fits, a family she found, and a family that will accept all of her abilities because they're strengths instead of differences
One encounter with the Hunters of Artemis would create a crossroad for Cass
And she chose to join them, to become a fighter alongside a family that loves her while still being a part of the family that found her
The batfamily will always be her family but the Hunters of Artemis became another
Tim Drake
Tim has always been defined by his intellect, so much that people often forget he is more than that
That is the curse of being a child of Athena
Athena, the goddess of wisdom
She is a strategist, a tactician, and an observer
She watches all sides of war and chooses the correct course of action, only inserting herself when the time is right
Tim is the same, his intellect is his greatest weapon
He observes from all sides because he's a detective, he's constantly searching for clues and piecing information together
People come to Tim because he's a leader, but his pedestal only exists because he's always the guy with the plan and the backup plans
But people often forget that Athena is also a goddess of war, she crafts warriors, battles, and then joins them
She fights in the wars of humanity on the front lines
Tim is not just a warrior of the mind, he is also a fighter
He's trained and capable because he knows his strengths in battle
He's lean and agile, he's not an offensive fighter, but a fighter who can end a battle swiftly by picking his opponent apart
Tim knows he's not as strong as his siblings, but he makes up for it by fighting in his own way
But the mind comes at a price
High esteemed intellect paired with the woes of war create a person who forgets humanity
Just as Athena can be seen as prideful and vain, Tim can be seen as cunning and conniving
Tim may be seen as the golden child who can do no wrong, but he is the child who will lie just as easily as he breathes
He's done things that taint his morals but consequences in war mean nothing if you win
He's a perfectionist who would rather do things himself because no one else would be able to do it well enough
Athena's wisdom comes with the price of hubris: deadly pride
His confidence in himself is miles above his self-esteem, making a deadly cocktail of imposter syndrome and paranoia
He will always feel driven by his inferiority because he sets himself up to an impossible standard
Stephanie Brown
Stephanie and her arc has always been described as a vengeance story even though it is much deeper than that
Nemesis knows this more than anyone else
Nemesis: greek goddess of retribution
Steph was fired from the mantle of Robin because her anger was driving her in the wrong direction
She desperatly wanted to prove herself far away from her father, yet in doing so, seemed to float impossibly closer to him
As a child of Nemesis, Steph would always have a strong need to instill divine punishment for crimes committed
But Stephanie was never driven by vengeance, she was driven by justice
Nemesis: greek goddess of balance
Revenge, retribution, vengeance—none of it could exist without their opposites: forgiveness, mercy, sympathy, and fairness
Nemesis is misconstrued as an angry deity who punishes all, but she is the goddess of balance and righting wrongs
Stephanie is the child who looked at her anger and found the sadness underneath, she is the child who accepted she couldn't be a hero Bruce wanted, so she became a hero she wanted to become
Success requires sacrifice, she had to erase a mantle not meant for her to create something far better—a give and take
And as a child of Nemesis, Steph can tip the scales of luck in her favor, but it always comes with a price
Steph has always been described as intense but she is fair
She is driven by her morals because they run so deep in who she is, but their complexities are often simplified at the cost of her story
Damian Wayne
Damian has always been seen as less of a person and more of a weapon, a tool to be used in war
It's hard to be seen as anything else when you're a child of Ares, the god of war and bloodshed
Resentment flows through Damian's veins and his temper is impossible to control when the spirit of war is written in his bloodline
Ares, a viscious god who sneers at his opponents
Ares, a cruel god who is quick to anger
Ares, a violent god who is a dangerous foe to all who cross him
Ares, a proud god whose arrogance makes him reckless
Ares, a strict god who has a soft spot for his family
Overconfidence leads Ares to often underestimate those around him, making it easy for cleverness to defeat him
Damian's childhood is rooted in all of Ares' qualities
But just like Barbara, blood may run thicker than water, but blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb
Damian may be a child of Ares, a child destined for war and bloodshed, but Damian can still learn to find himself despite that
He can be a demon and a detective, but he can also be Damian
His confidence is rooted in experience and in knowing he can overcome his adversaries
His temper can be dampened when he chooses which battles he wishes to partake in
He can be dangerous and loving at the same time, neither dimishes the other
Damian can love and be loved, he can feel all that his human heart allows him to without guilt
Damian is rough and temperamental, but he is also gentle and patient
War may seem violent, but war is also what brings people together in unlikely circumstances
Empathy, compassion, and kindness can still exist in the hardest of battles
Duke Thomas
Duke has always been a child of the light
He works the day shift to watch over Gotham and his powers reflect that of the sun
It only makes sense that his godly parent would be Apollo
Apollo has many attributes, and while Alfred takes on the healing sides, Duke takes on the others
Duke's powers would be from the sun, manipulating light to his advantage
But you can't have light without darkness, so Duke would still be able to manipulate both just as in canon
This was always the hardest of lessons for Duke
His longing to fit in with those around him made him wish he could fall fully into the darkness
But Duke often forgets that he is the light which guides Gotham
He is the light the guides his family
Their strength could not exist without him
His "Ghost Vision" would stay much the same because of the way his light abilities work
But paired with Apollo's gift of truth and oversight of prophecies, Duke would be much more alligned to that
Seeing into the past would be an easy feat for the child of Apollo
Apollo is also the god of archery, so Duke would also have an affinity for the sport
Being so close to the sun's properties, it wouldn't be too far fetched for him to ride in the Sun Chariot every so often
And considering he can technically fly, he's a ray of sunshine embodied for all those around him

Okay so the poem in Ren’s Hermitcraft video was absolutely amazing so I just had to break it down and write about it!
This theme can be seen in the title of the poem itself: “The King and the Clock.” Where no name is given to the two subjects of the work. One is replaced by his title, the other is stripped of his humanity all together being represented only by an object. This shows that the people behind these titles aren’t as important as what they represent for the narrative and the world around them. The focus is also drawn away from the people behind the titles which lets their actions speak for themselves without being affected by the human side of the lyrical subjects.
On multiple occasions the poem also speaks of great buildings the “Clock” or the King built up. “The baker took stone, and paved roads” While these builds start out humbly and their scale is small, soon they become a “great Pit”, a Tower and “a Dungeon”. These buildings serve as monuments to the King and his reign, monuments which will stand tall even after the king himself might not. These buildings are also presented as landmarks, appearing in the poem every time the king reaches a new milestone or gains more power- a road is what got him his position, a great pit was built to announce it and a tower is where he resided, affirming his place as the king. These monuments, their geratenes and timelessness yet again ties to the overall theme and shows an attempt to leave behind a mark for generations to see.
This legacy is however shown not only through actions but also the words used to describe the king’s specific periods in life. At the beginning of the poem, the language used is informal and mostly descriptive. The use of words such as “bursted with flavor” or “very chill” in the first paragraph creates a sense of ease and calm which is connected to the baker himself. He is presented as an unproblematic, kind person, beloved by his friends and neighbors. The lack of formal language also shows that the baker’s life wasn’t overly structured nor was he forced into doing what he loved.
As the poem continues and the baker becomes a king, the language shifts however, using less descriptive and more evocative words as well as similes: “There blossomed a King like a flower.” The king’s rise to power is compared to a growing flower in that it came from a small seed- the roads he built, but transformed into something unexpected and great. There is however also instability as the flower blossoms and changes constantly just to one day wilt and die.
Archaisms also begin to appear as laws are “writ” and a “Dungeon this King then did buildeth.” The contrast between the common, informal language used prior and the constricted, royal-sounding language used when the king gains his power, shows the loss of the vision he had at the beginning of his reign. He begins to lose himself in the “kingly ideals”, focusing less on the roads which build connections between people and more on his castles and vaults which lock him in, alienating him from the people he rules over. The archaic language therefore represents these ideals and responsibilities which drown out the kind hearted baker and give way to the king’s madness, making him a “ranting mad reigner”. The end of the poem then mostly returns back to the informal language, loses its pretentious tone and shows the king giving up his power, returning back to the “humble pies” but still affected by his past as seen by the use of the poetic: “surcease of sorrow”.
The power itself, which the king is both given and robbed of throughout the poem, is itself represented by multiple symbols, such as the crown, the man of the clock or the diamonds. The crown, when first presented to the king is written with a lowercase “c”, it is simply an object given to one man by another. However the moment the crown rests on the king’s head it is said that it: “Great promise and might represented”. And “Tiny Crown urged him with Power”. Here the crown is connected with the symbols of power and might which are themselves connected with the themes of the king’s legacy. The crown is also written with a capital letter, despite being in the middle of the sentence. The use of capitalization brings importance to the crown and links it with the other word with a capital letter in it- “Power.” The moment the crown gives the king power to write laws and impose taxes on its people it is given a spotlight through the use of capitalization. The crown is also not the only capitalized word in this poem, the “Vault”, “Diamonds”and “Pillars” are all visible, tangible signs of the king’s power and are therefore also capitalized.
It is not only objects which enable the king to do as he pleases. At first the clock man isn’t important to the baker’s life and so he is introduced simply as “the clock man.” However when he presents the king with the crown he rises in the king’s ranks, ascending to the title of “The Clock Man”. With the power of the crown he gives to the king, his own power rises and with it does the first letter of his title. Eventually, with the growing influence the power has on the king, “The Clock Man” ascends again to the title of “Clock” losing his humanity all together, rising to the ranks of “Crown” and “Diamonds” in the king’s mind. “The Clock” was the thing to give him his power after all, what is more important? And why then should he be burdened with the fleeting humanity if he can simply be “The Clock.”
However the “Clock’s” status is only ever as important as the king’s power. And so when the king is robed, forcefully removed from his position and returns to his humble pies the capital letter of the previous “King” falls to “king, and with it, the same way it rose, now falls “The Clock” back to the “man with the clock”. He’s given back his humanity and loses his importance in the baker’s life.
In the end the king loses everything, his status, his riches, his friends and neighbors. However the poem doesn’t see this loss of power as a loss of legacy altogether. That is because two legacies are actually explored throughout the work. One is the legacy of the king, it can be seen by the tall towers and impossible vaults he builds. “The Pillars did rise he felt very wise.” However the baker’s building is also brought up. “His windmill was tall barely tilted at all.” The juxtaposition between the king’s and the baker’s buildings also shows their differences in life. One is concerned with impressive pillars that would announce his presence to the world. The other is happy when his windmill stands straight in the wind. He sees the achievements of his one build instead of making more and more to ensure he is remembered.
This poem explores the themes of legacy of one man through his life. It does so by posing the king and the baker against each other and highlighting their opposites. The king’s power is shown through the use of capital letters and his madness through archaisms. The title of the poem shows the lack of focus on the people behind the titles. And the work itself guides its readers through the transformation of the baker to the king and back.

I've never done any kind of proper historical studies -- everything I've learned is from high school, from reading things on wikipedia, from history podcasts, and more rarely (because I rarely have the patience to read) from books. So I... hardly know anything about specifics. The kind of intimate knowledge of the inner workings of empires and peoples that a college educated student would have.
This might sound odd but... it's a bit reassuring to me that even someone who's spent years studying those two specific subjects doesn't feel comfortable saying for certain what any individual person, or group of people may have been experiencing at any given time. That the environment people lived in was so *vastly* different that one can only have clues as to what people felt, how they experienced the world.
All that being said, and I do apologize if this is another too-vague or too-broad question -- do you feel as though your college studies have changed the way you relate to the past?
So I wanna unpack some of this a little bit, because you're closing off some avenues I don't think you need to close off.
College students do learn about specifics, but the thing that's really being taught in college is how to think and learn. Skills, not facts. Part of what made that conversation with the history majors so memorable is that it highlighted how much is different between majors in that regard.
Sociology vs psych might be a valuable example here: Rule of thumb, sociology teaches you to approach issues on a population level, groups of people; psychology teaches you to approach issues on the individual level. There's very few areas where either is 100% right to the exclusion of the other, but it's useful to know which lens (a) you and (b) your source is using, if you're going to be reading about, e.g., the causes of poor academic performance in American boys. Psych says this is due to a rise in ADHD; socio says our classrooms aren't suitable for...anyone, but especially people who have never had to sit still and be quiet (ie, boys).
WHAT you learn in college is HOW to learn. (It's also, crucially, a period where 1, you very often have nothing else to do BUT learn and 2, you are paying a gazillion dollars for the privilege of learning, so you're heavily incentivized to actually do it. Free activities are easier to stop doing than ones you paid to do.)
It's how to navigate databases, how to read articles (peer reviewed or otherwise), which resources to trust, what it MEANS to trust a resource, how to read with different lenses, how to find information at all, what sorts of conclusions are reasonable or specious to draw from that information (aka: how flimsy can your argument be before your professor will tell you to find more evidence), when to apply certain techniques...
* Enormous caveat: if your professors were any good. Some of them aren't. Many of them aren't. If your professors universally suck, you'll come out with a meaningless degree and student debt, which is not ideal.
But theoretically, at least, the purpose of 21st century higher ed is to teach you how to learn.
Then you go apply it.
All of which is to say: The granular factoids I have on call about 15th and 16th century explorers did not come from college; I didn't take a single class on that era. They came from books and articles and online resources. College taught me how to evaluate those books (although common sense plays a huge role here) but the rest of it was self driven.
Here's the other thing: None of that knowledge is paywalled.
While the decline of Google makes finding some of these resources harder, I highly, highly recommend just searching things like "how to judge a history source" and "basic resources for social history" (a guess based on your focus on 'inner workings of empires and peoples'). Then read a bunch of links (please first filter for obviously AI written pages!).
THEN ask yourself some questions: Where did those links disagree? Are there areas they all agreed on? Was there something that 8 pages agreed on but 2 did not? If it seems like a key area, go check who's written & hosting those links, and consider what they might (or might not) know about the field. (If r/askhistorians and PragerU disagree on a definition, you can bet which one I'm listening to.)
After reading a bunch of pages, you probably have MORE search terms and MORE questions. Repeat. Repeat.
I just mentioned r/askhistorians: For this sort of thing, I would read anything with the Monday Methods flair. Start here. That page was last updated 5 years ago but it DOES link to 3 years of mostly weekly posts on how historians think. 100% free. No college tuition required.
Podcasts are great resources. r/askhistorians is fucking invaluable. I would murder for the r/askhistorians modteam, no questions asked.
Reading is a learnable skill! Reading history books is very learnable! I stopped reading print material for 2 years, and when I was getting back into it, I set myself an alarm. 15 minutes a day in the evening when I had nothing else going on. Start with fiction if you're out of the habit, YA would be my recommendation, then start expanding.
There ARE history books with audio versions out there and you can check your library system for those; I don't vibe with audiobooks so can't provide any specifics, but I know they exist. Most history books won't have recordings, though--what you may be able to do if you check out or purchase a digital version is use a text-to-speech program or screenreader to read it to you. This obviously has some drawbacks :P But it's an option!
So: Did my degrees affect how I interact with history? Yeah. I'm not discarding the impact of my education, I had some really phenomenal classics teachers. But they're not the only way to get that result. There are other routes to the same destination.

Twin Prides: The Jiang Principles
In MDZS, there's a time frame where both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian'a actions display exemplary Jiang principles. A common theme in the book is that: you may do good, but you are not entitled to the rewards. Another theme would be: one's body may turn to dust but one's soul will pay for retribution or reward.
Having said that, what is so very important to me with events leading upto and after the golden core transfer is that:
1. Jiang Cheng tries to defend Wei Wuxian from Madam Yu. Madam Yu says utterly hateful words to Wei Ying while giving Jiang Cheng love (probably for the first time.)
2. Jiang Fengmian pats Jiang Cheng's head, wishes him well, and asks Wei Ying to protect him.
3. They go back and see everyone is dead; Jiang Cheng wishes to run inside. Wei Wuxian stops him from "taking revenge/killing himself"
4. He beats Wei Ying up and strangles him.
5. Wei Ying goes to buy him food afterwards.
6. Jiang Cheng distracts the guards and gets captured instead.
This timing, and everything that has happened before is so important: Jiang Cheng knows that it isn't Wei Wuxian's fault, has seen everyone blame him and hurt him, including himself. He wanted to go back in, find his parents - all of this culminates into him displaying the true Jiang principle by becoming the bait.
Conclusion:
He ends up getting whipped once by the discipline whip, have three broken ribs, and a melted core.
Obviously, the concluding effects are much more severe than he had expected.
So, he did it. He became what his father always wanted him to be. And where did that land him? Wasn't it all because Wei Wuxian also tried to be righteous? So, he channels his mother - the mother who hugged him, and the mother who always said he was to rule while the others would be drowning in sewers.
Now, onto Wei Wuxian's point of view:
1. He made use of the Jiang principles and the fall of the Jiang clan was pinned onto him by Madam Yu, by Jiang Cheng, by the people.
2. He was treated terribly by Madam Yu, and commanded to protect Jiang Cheng by both of his guardians.
3. Wei Wuxian does NOT know Jiang Cheng distracted the guards. All he's shown is that Jiang Cheng's anger towards him.
4. Despite that, with a sense of responsibility towards the Jiang Clan, he gives up his core so that the Jiang Clan can go on.
Conclusion?
Get caught by Wen Chao (mnnn), get tortured and ultimately thrown into the worst place on earth from where his soul would be denied relief.
The concluding effects are supremely overstated. Wei Wuxian probably expected having to live as an average man without any cultivation, to probably not be able to fight the war, to probably even die in the war.
But now his literal soul is denied existence. He would have been stuck there for ETERNITY. Just another resentful spirit.
Both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian showed the true Jiang principle here.
Both of them got punished so severely for choosing to be righteous.
Their story diverges from here in a way:
Jiang Cheng, armed with Zidian, with the Jiang cultivators, with Jiang swordsmanship and cultivation, never displayes the true Jiang principles ever again. He is another one of the gentry to abandon the ideals upon which any sect is formed ("be righteous" - Lan Qiren)
Wei Wuxian abandons the Jiang cultivators, is removed from the Jiang line, and gives up Jiang swordsmanship, but despite the heavy consequences, chooses again and again to display the true Jiang ideals.

META , 𝑫𝑨𝑬𝑵𝑬𝑹𝒀𝑺' 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑨𝑵𝑻𝑰-𝑷𝑹𝑶𝑷𝑯𝑬𝑻, 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑨𝑵𝑻𝑰-𝑴𝑬𝑺𝑺𝑰𝑨𝑯, 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑯𝑼𝑴𝑨𝑵 𝑸𝑼𝑬𝑬𝑵: often talking with @ruingod and the tropes around characters, i realized how of an antithesis dany is to the common messianic trope ( unlike paul who absorbs himself in it to gain power ) and since recently there has been going on a discussion about it as if she's the same trope as his ( sigh ), i decided to come here and express my opinions ( which are just that, opinions and interpretations ). well, daenerys does not see herself as anything but a queen, a ruler, and she views it as a duty and not a priviledge. she sees ruling ad a responsability to protect those around her ( coming from the sense that she often wasn't protected ), and does not use their dependance on her and their views of her figure as means to create prophercies or even propaganda about her rule. she never sees herself as above her people, as their savior, but a member of their reality/society with the power of bringing change. daenerys did not conquer the free cities to gain numbers to battle, or to rule them with her iron first of ideals ( in fact, one of her issues is that she did not count with that part and is falling under creating her own ruling ). daenerys conquered the cities to free the slaved and their oppression. she had no need to do it either, with enough gold and ships to sail to westeros before doing so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's no questioning that daenerys is doing what she does because she believes in the good, not in vengeance, not out of need for power. she's there to serve the oppressed, and not the opposite. she's not their messiah. there's a reason why mhysa resonates with her: she's mother, she's freeing, amidst the fear of being the opposite due to her roots ( remember the valyrians were slavers themselves ). like dragons, there's no cruel inner nature. there's the singular thing: dany is good. intrisically. she struggles in understandig that good intentions do not make a good realm - it only, sometimes, makes it weak. and to be ruthless to protect those she swore to protect is what makes her shake in fear of becoming entirelly ruthless. losing herself. becoming what people believe dragons to be: monsters, and monsters only.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
daenerys does not use speech to gain support. her actions did so, and she did not do them out of the selfish reason: yes, this will have me be their queen. i'll become their god. no, dany did it because she loathed to see such suffering. she acted out of her heart. when she freed the unsullied she did not do it knowing they would follow her afterwards, nor when she fred drogo's slaves. their freedom was theirs, just like hers was hers. they followed her because they saw it as just that, someone worth it, someone who did it because it was right, and not someone who used them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
her iron throne goal becomes secondary in her mind as she decides to stay in mereen to keep things under control. to not let those people back in chains and in even more pain before she met them. if she wanted just to control them, dany would become the tyrant that season 8 wants you to see her as. she'd burn her enemies, and make others follow her with the disguise of being their savior. make them cross the sea and fight in her name only. she'd be flawless before their eyes, she'd see herself as flawless, she'd see herself as righteous. daenerys does not do it, in any moment. she constantly does what sacrifice is needed to help others and not herself. staying in mereen is proof of that, still, we constantly read she's a selfish person who only does what she does out of greed. when speaking of paul, for example, and the parallels, it is just a mirror of different perspectives of similar situations. one leaning towards the opressed for power, and the other leaning towards power to help the opressed.

Genshin Theory from a noob: Language
Alright, well I'm in the middle of a 24 hour sleep reset so sorry if this makes no sense, but I've just got into Genshin and have recently caught up with the archon quests. One thing that I really enjoyed have been how each nation built their culture and government around the ideals of their nation. I'm sure those who are interested in this already know this but I'm still going to type it out for my sleep addled mind.
Mondstadt: Freedom- loose theocracy/police state w/ nomadic-like cells; based off the old Gemadic + Latin middle ages?
Liyue: Contracts- rigid capitalist structure w/ formal religious roots; based off China (though what dynasty, I don't know)
Inazuma: Eternity- rigid clan power w/ smaller clans controlling their own islands mush closer; Based off shogunat Japan
Sumaru: Wisdom- academic body w/ nomadic? Natives? Based off India and the middle east (mostly Egypt)
Fontaine: Justice- Judicial system w/ an oligarcical prison system?? (Idk how you would describe the fortress) Based off France.
Shneznia: ???- possibly also a theocracy w/ the God herself ruling; based of Russia.
I would put the Pyro nation but like I said, I'm new to Genshin and too tired to research properly. MOVING ON
We know these nations were built by the Archons to nurse their ideals but something that is only brought up a few times is the language barrier -or the lack of it. We know there are other languages, since is brought of a few times when something it written in "common" but it's surprising that EVERYONE can speak it. Despite the name, common as a language type, wouldn't make much sence. Which that got me thinking about how the languages would form and mix together.
Remember that language is never linear and alway mixes with the other languages around it. And for one language to be considered "Common" in the vast world known as Teyvat. So before we can ask what is Common, we have to analyze the other languages and see how they formed.
THE GOD LANGUAGE
And before we even start with the nation's, we have to start.... with their gods! Now, the gods of Teyvat grew their followers and mirrored their cultures to enhance their faith and spread their power. This also means that before the birth of Common there had to have been another universal language only the gods and immortal spirits spoke to communicate with each other. Personally, I like to think that it sounded like old Latin since the Lesser Key of Solomon was written in that language.
We can substantiate this with the fact that Morax had to make Mora instead of their being a currency that his people already used. The creation of currency is a sign of outward growth since it means foreigners can now enter the economy with only the minted coin and not, say, a herd of goats or bails of wheat.
As to what that language sounded like would entirely depend on how gods/ spirits are formed. I imagine it would be innate to them upon birth or manifestation since both seem to naturally come from the earth. Hell, each God might sound completely different but because their language is built off universal concepts and the elements, they just naturally understand eachother.
This would also mean that their people would most likely have a language that their respective god created, if Liyue and Sumaru/the desert dwellers have mean anything. As to what and how they formed I do have an... unfounded theory. I still have not finished all the story quests so forgive me if I get things wrong. I will also be using each nation's cultural stand-in as their language; ie German for Mondstadt, Manderin for Liyue, ect.
MONDSTADT
Starting with Mondstadt we have the King Decarabian, the small wind spirit Barbatos, and the minor gods/ elemental dragon of Mondstadt with would become the four winds. Since we don't know how long King Decarabian ruled and there is no mention of him having rivals, we can assume the majority of the humans in the area were his to rule. Especially since he didn't even regard the wolf god as a threat during the Archon war and the fact that the people made Venti as their god without him having to kill other gods to keep it. We can assume the rest of Four Winds didn't have humans to look after either during that time, being uninterested in them.
This would mean German is one of two of the most purest... base language. The indefinite isolation the Tyrant put them through meant that they most likely never spoke to foreigners before the rebellion, but with the freedom Barbatos gave them, they were quick to leave and explore past their nation. This would explain why the Adventure's Guild Headquarters is in Mondstadt instead of each nation having their own.
As for what it sounds like I think it would still have the harshness of German thanks to the origins with the God of Storms but has also gained a softer, rounder note with Barbatos's ascension. They also have a penchant for borrowing words from other languages as the people spread out through Teyvat. Tying that with their friendliness with foreigners and you quickly find yourself with the beginning of a mutt language, something we will bring up later. For now let's move on too...
LIYUE
Liyue is by far the most complicated when it comes to their language history, since it seems like the majority of old gods vyed for power and land there as well as the dozens of Adepti that roamed the land. It's to assume that it was more of a conglomerate of villages that spoke their own version of Common rather than each god exclusively influencing their followers language. Think how the Nordic languages interact with each other, that was basically how Liyue's former languages.
Soon, with Morax coming into power, that common language became Manderin and was probably about as complex as well. I imagine dialects are still very big their though, along with unique naming conventions based on region. I think that their would be a good amount of Teyvat's version of Latin in it because of the fact that gods and adepti were so close to humans.
Manderin would probably be one of the strongest languages in Teyvat, passing German and just behind Sumaru's language. Though there is an argument for it having the strongest influence with it's proximity to Teyvat's economy. As to what it sounds like, I think it would vary by region but would gave the bounciness of Manderin but with the rolling undercurrent of Latin- if that makes sense. It would also have quite a few loan words from Sumaru in particular and would be one of the wordiest language thanks to needing to state the parameters of a contract extensively. And while there is an honorific system, it's more modern and our next nation...
INAZUMA
I will start this section by saying, I really didn't read/ pay attention much to Inazuma. So this may all be wrong.
Inazuma being a collection of islands so far from the mainland gives it a lot of uniqueness compared to the other languages and cultures. Logically...it should be the most unique of the other nations... unfortunately, this is still a gacha game and so there has to be a Japantm. So I'm probably going to say that the original Baal separated the islands from the main land... or that the God of Vortex pushed them even farther away from Liyue.
Either way, I imagine they would actually have Two "languages": the common Japanese borm form the natural progression of being separated from Liyue we see mirrored in real life, and a more ancient language used exclusively in religious work and meetings with gods and spirits.
Compared to Liyue, Inazuma is even more devout to their gods, building so many shrines and interacting with spirits even more than those in Liyue thanks to the smaller amout of space. So while they had a similar situation as Liyue, the humans were at higher beings mercy even more. I imagine that the humans at that time kept an even stricter honorific language. With the politest version using so much Latin syntaxes a form of respect.
With the raise of Baal and Eternity taking power, I imagine that polite speech coming to a halt while the rest of the language evolved until they became two separate languages. If you thought Liyue's combination was weird then think of Japanese and Latin mixed together. It would probably be the most complex language with the honorific system being to strong there in particular.
SUMARU
Sumaru interested me the most, since it is thee nation of Wisdom, and I love the fact the modern Sumaru is based heavily on India! That being said, language-wise... I'm a bit at a loss. Because they have the Desert-dwellers (which I will now be calling Arabics because I hate that usage), they had a full blown language before the Dendro Archon. But it's very obvious that there was a major shift after King Desheret death.
It could be because of the Akademiya's push to worship Buer that they completely morphed the language, creating something of a class language where only the learned and elite can speak. It would be interesting, especially since I don't think such a thing has happened in the real world. It would help that the Arabics stayed in the desert, keeping not only their language, but their features as well while the academics became pale and evolved their language to reflect that of Buer. (Which you could say because they stayed inside all day studying but idk. Still wish they made them dark.)
Egyptian Arabic would probably be the oldest mortal language still spoken in Teyvat and may have moved far from any Latin tie before Buer came to power. I can also see modern Arabics wanting to separate their language from the academics because of rising tensions, as it to say "They are not us."
The academics on the other hand would probably be just as wordy as Liyue since they research. Though I think the Akademiya's disdain for lesser languages might lead to them never officially borrowing words. This, of course would lead to a casual speech that would use loan words and a formal speech that is used in papers and events would be 100% Hindi. Hindi would also be a major language since it would be the language of science/ alchemy with also being the only place of formal education in Teyvat. This Hindi probably has major roots in Latin in an effort to be like their god. But they aren't the most Latin. That would be...
FONTAINE
So Fontaine is fun because it is the only nation we know so far that IS a Latin based language irl and we can make several connections with the God Language being Latin with this.
So with the Nation of Justice being so tied with the idea of truth as well, it's pretty ironic that it was built on a falsity, with Fontainians being Oceanids. Specifically, they were the familiars of the Hydro Archon...
I hope you know where I'm going with this.
When the Oceanidss became human, the Latin they spoke had to be reformed, after all the "True Latin" can only spoken and understood between gods and spirits, so their now mortal use of Latin had to be tweaked. And slowly but surely, it became the Latin language we see their today: French!
It would be the youngest of the languages with soooooo many borrowed words; most of them from Liyue and Sumaru so it's more of a mutt than how our France likes to portray it's language.
There isn't much else to say (that won't insult the Franks) so let's skip the Nation of War and move on to what little we know about...
SNEZHNAYA... AND KHAENRI'AH
So, like I said, I'm new to the game and have not played through all of the story quests. So this is pure speculation though I did read just a bit wiki in my state to know about Khaenri'ah and the Abyss's tie to Latin. You would think that means my theory of Latin being the language of the divine but not really. In fact if "True Latin" was the language spoken by the gods and spirits, it would make sense that it would be the language of Alchemy, astrology and magic. And with Khaenri'ah being so old it would definitely have Latin-like text.... which brings me to my theory...
Khaenri'ah is Italian. HEAR ME OUT!
I always found it strange that the fatui harbingers had Italian titles despite their nation being Russian. But then I learned the the Fatui was started by a Khaenrian who have everyone their titles. And with Italian being so close to Latin it would make sense why so much of their text still reads Latin. Especially if they saw Latin as the script of the world. If anything Khaenrian's insistence on using Latin script could be seen as an insult to the gods, as if saything they were equals. The Abyss also speaks Latin most likely since it's another ancient force in Teyvat though I imagine it... gives off a feeling of dread for all who listens... unless they're already insane.
As for Snezhnaya. I still want to wait before giving a full analysis.
COMMON
alright I've spent 4 hours on this and I'm crashing so it's gonna be short. The basis of Teyvat's common language is mostly going to be German since Mondstadt were most likely the first to travel and interact with the other nations. It would then be mixed with Manderin as Liyue's financial power grew and their language formalized. Hindi probably had a bit of influence as well but since Sumaru is very elitist only a few borrowed words slipped in. I can see the same happening with the rise of technology in Fontaine though it will probably be on a much smaller scale.
I'm not editing this. Feel free to add your opinions and theories in the comments. I'm gonna suffer for 5 more hours now.
