yes, the aroace luffy head-canon and ships with luffy can co-exist but it’s also,, not as simple as just saying that.

so first of, obviously aroace people can experience attraction. it’s a spectrum and some do experience romantic/sexual attraction to a certain degree. also, there is other types of attraction that aroace people may experience: queerplatonic, alterous, aesthetic attraction that may push them into having a relationship.

but, aroace charecters identity (confirmed or implied) in media has been ignored and erased a lot for the sake of shipping, which is why sometimes, especially with characters like luffy where aroace identities are implied within the actual text, it kind of feels like erasure even if it isn’t explicitly confirmed or if you headcanon them as able to feel romantic/sexual attraction. imo as a aroace person sometimes it really isn’t done tastefully in conjunction with the head-canon and more-so feels like an excuse to just ship said character. and if you do head-canon them as angled aroace, there is almost never any consideration how the aroace part of the character’s identity may effect their relationship. it just feels like that facet of their identity is thrown away for the sake of shipping.

and if you want to go down the route that the relationship is built on some other type of attraction that isn’t romantic/sexual, then you shouldn’t just portray it in the way you would with any other romantic/sexual relationship. because they are built on fundamentally different feelings, so the relationship is going to be fundamentally different from a traditional romantic relationship. however, almost nobody does that and, again, it just seems like the aroace part of their identity is completely gone.

so yeah, they can co-exist, but it’s almost never done tastefully and instead centres an aroace character (headcanoned or not) around romance. and when it’s done in conjunction with an identity that is fundamentally about going against the idea that romance is the most important relationship that you can have, it very much feels like erasure, even if you don’t mean it to be like that. like, you don’t actually respect aroace identities, at least not enough to portray them respectfully and properly. and then aroace ppl are going to get mad about it, because what is the point of you even trying to make these two statements co-exist if you’re going to completely ignore one huge part of the character’s identity.

and if you just want to have fun shipping luffy without any of that, just don’t headcanon him as aroace…like it’s as simple as that. but if you are, maybe just stop and think about why people are mad at you instead of just getting defensive.

it’s more complicated then this, obviously, but it’s almost always discussed from one perspective (basically condemning people who get mad about luffy ships when it comes specifically to the aroace luffy head-canon) and i think it would to see everyone some good if you just take a step back and look at it from another perspective.

anyway, i just wanted too put my thoughts out there. this isn’t even getting into loveless aroaces and how they fit into it all but, yk, didn’t want to turn this into a huge rant because i actually want people to consider this
