I saw your story about male Talia and Bruce's sister, I just loved it. If your requests are open I would like to ask for Ra's Al Ghul and Bruce's older sister (or any of Bruce's family members)
Would You Even Dare
Ra's al Ghul X Wayne! Reader
Bruce Wayne X Aunt! Reader
Warnings:suggestive content, explicit language, angst, guns, child kidnapping, and injury
Words:1492
Arthur's notes! Hardly anything canon about Ra's is true in the story. Ra's didn't try to kill Tim. Ra's is a good father/grandfather. He doesn't lead the league of assassin's.. At least not anymore. Older Reader 50s to early 60s. She is Thomas Wayne's sister!.. Also Athanasia is in the story. Quote from Mentalist show.
Y/N reunites with a old friend hoping he will help her.
Tumblr media
In all the many centuries Ra's had lived through. He did not wish to live another 100 years, nor even a day without her beside him. He for the first time considered letting age take his life, with her right beside him.
Deep inside he was infected with a wound deep within his heart that not even the Lazarus could heal. What pains the former assassin, was that he truly ached to be with her. Though it was better that he be alone.. As those who are close to him are the ones who become hurt.
Ra's left the league of assassin's to his only son Dusan much to his son's shock. He would have a long time ago if only for the reason to not allow such a heavy burden.
Thousands of miles away Y/N Wayne was thinking of her precious grandniece whom had disappeared 3 years ago.
Y/N closes her eyes remembering being taken by Slade. While there she saw, a young girl with him. She looked to be the age as her niece would be by now. Her face was concealed but her voice.. Her hair.. It was a Wayne trait. It was her father's hair.. Y/N's nephews hair.
She was ruthless but it seemed by Slade's orders as she could see the young girl did harbor sympathy for her. Slade did not allow them much time together if at all.
Perhaps it was a, young girl he found and chose to use her for his bidding. Though her heart seemed to say it was indeed her.
She still was afraid it was her heart hoping too much but what if it is? Slade is certainly capable of doing such a terrible thing. Especially if it brought torture unto the al Ghul's and the Wayne's.
Using a yacht she sits in the drivers seat programing it to Ra'sh al Ghul's location. He had only told Talia and Y/N only for the reason for emergency. She sits on the seat thinking back to a, old memory as the anticipation to see him was consuming her.
~
Y/N hadn't heard from her nephew in over 3 months. She was growing worried. She left Gotham to investigate where her nephew had gone. She knew he was planning to make major changes to Gotham. For that reason she was truly terrified he would meet the same fate as her brother and his wife.....
Eventually she found evidence he went to a hidden place within the vast wilderness. In a ancient city located in the Himalayas. She knew of whom was there...
Y/N entered into the fortress courtesy of the assassin's after she said the coded word, Ra's told her many years prior. Ra's al Ghul stepped forth to see his dear friend.
His eyes saw her beauty but his heart went to many years ago to her saving his own life after a bombing from an attack. One of his many enemies found his safe house and tried to kill him. Y/N was with a, team of spies investigating the, same enemies as the ones who attempted to kill Ra's. They assisted in finding survivors. All were dead but miraculously she found the wounded assassin and nursed him back to health.
"Ms Wayne" he greets
"Ra's al Ghul" she greeted to the widower "you know why I'm here"
"your nephew came to me. Given his relation to you. I thought it wise not to confine my knowledge to ensure he is not another Wayne to be buried"
She softly smiled "I suppose we are even now"
"never are, we to be even Ms Wayne"
She sweetly smiled "I suppose I should leave before he sees me. Please don't tell him I was here"
"I will utter no such thing of your concern for him. Safe travels my friend" he gently smiled
~
"we need to talk" she first said to Ra's who was standing in the sand
"what do you want?" he coldly said though his heart was, warm to have her in his presence, however.. He could not allow her inside...
"I deserve better than that Ra's!" she accused him
She truly did and it was tournament not treating her with the kindness she deserves. He grunted stepping to her, her arms folded glaring up to him. She was still so beautiful when she was angry at him. He then steps to his hut. She quickly followed after him.
"that's it?! You're not going to say anything? You're not at all curious nor care as to why I've come?"
The two step inside as she slammed the door behind her.
"you are waisting your time if you believe there is anything to flourish between us" he said with his heart breaking
"this isn't about us Ra's.." she snapped back
"then why?" he asked now realizing that she was truly worried.
"it's about Athanasia"
"tell me everything"
.....
Ra's and Y/N left with their gear. The two resided in a safe-house nearest to the place of which she was captured. The two barely spoke to each other unless it was regarding Athanasia.
"we should lay low and start fresh tomorrow. I can sleep on the couch. You may have the bed" he said in a blunt tone
"the great Ra's al Ghul sleeping on a couch that is sight I'd never thought I'd see" she chuckled, to which he rolled his eyes. She tried to hold her words inside but fails "why didn't you stay?"
He sighed "I believed it was for the best"
"it wasn't.." she sighed stuttering unable to hold her emotions inside especially in his presence that made her feel safe enough to "you weren't there Ra's! I'm so angry at you! I'm angry you left me and I... I wanted, needed you"
He only remains silent in his guilt Y/N turned away to hide her tears. Ra's stepped softly touching her shoulders. He only moved forward because she leaned into his touch. He kisses her neck snacking his arm across her folded arms with his other across her waist.
"my intentions were to keep you safe from my enemies. I did not intend to hurt you. I blamed myself for your pain. I was.. Frightened Y/N. If for all of my many years of living had made any purpose. It was you. You have made each century worth living.. I have only fallen more deeply and fondly for you"
.....
Ra's dealt with Slade as Y/N departs to look for Athanasia. Y/N senses a presence. She turned in a cautioned manner. She sees her.
"give me a good reason why I should not shoot you!!" she threatened her gun aiming to the older woman.
"Athanasia" she calmly said now seeing her face.. It was truly her.
"that's not who I am! Stop moving!!"
"you are safe, you are loved-" she stammered as a, heart wrenching shout from her niece came back
"stop it!" she shouts her hand shaking with the gun in her hand
She steps close to the young girl "and you are wise"
"get away from me!" her voice shouted but her heart took control as she drops the gun.
Athanasia let out a heartbroken cry as she is embraced.. She was free from the mind-controlling poison Slade had taken from Ivy. She clings to her tightly sobbing. All her past memories she believed were comforting illusions.. She knew were real.
With Slade taken care of. Ra's hears familiar crying from his granddaughter. He runs to find her in embrace. He softly smiled to them.
"let's go home" he said as they part.
"grandfather?" she mumbled taken aback
"hello my dear" he greets
Athanasia was welcomed with warm and tearful hugs by her, family. Ra's held Y/N's hand standing from afar. He feels comfort, he feels peace.
"I think I may consider a early retirement" she casually said
"would you consider residing with me?" he offered
"is that a, proposal Ra'sy?" she asked intrigued
"would you dare even consider?" he smiled softly to her.
"would you even dare ask?"
3 years later....
In the late night. On the eve of Mrs al-Ghul's birthday. A group of vigilantes sneak onto the couples private island.
"shhh you'll break our cover!" Damian accused Stephanie has she had just tripped over a log.
"little brother is right. This is a covert operation" Athanasia said in her pink pajamas while her baby brother wore his green pajamas.
"sorry" she whispers, wishing her purple bunny slippers had more protection.
"it's a sleepover guys not a, stake out" Jason scoffed, holding his pillow "besides Gramps already knows we're coming"
"still she raised Batman himself" Dick added in defense to the twins, in his bright blue pajamas.
"quiet" Bruce grunts wearing his own pajamas and robe.
Ra's kisses his sleeping wife's lips. He hears soft footsteps in their living room inside their home and smiles to himself. They're all here.

Ra al ghul with a s/o whos an archeologist?
Ra's Al Ghul with an archeologist S/O
Oh man.
TW: talking about colonization, dead bodies, archeology ethics,
So you need to understand, with this man being as old as he is, he is very aware of the place a lot of archeologists have had in the waves of history- Mostly how they would discover and take cultural artifacts to put them in museums and refuse to give them back to their native people.
You're talking centuries of severe ethical breaches and looting that still has lasting effects today. Granted, there are people working to actively change that- but keep in mind his general opinion is not the best. You are of course an exception but I wouldn't go taking him to work functions if you know what I mean.
Of course, he's more than willing to have long discussions about this with you. How the paint "mummy brown" was created from ground up mummified corpses. How many Native Americans claims to rightful property have been ignored. How some people view archeology as glorified grave-robbing. He makes it clear he doesn't associate these things with you, but knowledge of history prevents it's mistakes from being repeated.
When you tell him stories of inspiration from things like Indiana Jones and the 1999 remake of The Mummy or even your own life, he relents. It's about the wonder and discovery of knowledge. Of cultures and lives long since over. That's what it's supposed to be about, anyways. Sharing that knowledge with the world.
If it's truly that wonder you seek, he has some things to show you. He can take you all over the world to see ancient sights long lost to the average person. Help you read dead languages in texts he's found in his travels.
If Ra's was assured anything found to be returned immediately to their local government, there's even a possibility he would fund and participate in research/a dig.
Maybe if you're lucky, he'll show you his ancient weapon collection. ;) Yes, he knows how to use all of them and it's very cool and also intimidating.

I'm up to writing the sixteenth chapter.
Ra's is starting to seduce the reader.
Harry thinks the reader is a complete badass.
The reader has the goblins on her side.
Dumbledore is manipulative.
Also, here is the mood board that I've created for the fic.
Tumblr media
I've also created a playlist on Spotify for the fic so I will link that to the first chapter.
I plan to upload the chapters I've written for the fic to AO3 this weekend.

Hello, I was wondering if you could do a Ra's Al Ghul x eldest son reader, where the reader is being courted by Ra's and the Batfamily's reactions to seeing their brother receiving gifts from Ra's
Okay, I have screamed when I got this. If anybody wants me to write about Ra's, when I open my requests, please do send them. Pretty please. I just love Ra's. Also, 2.8k words! My fingers hurt, but I love it.
Summary: Ra's is courting (Y/N). (Y/N) really doesn't know how to feel.
Warnings: Ra's is sending gifts to (Y/N), Bruce is protective, everyone is protective, implications of smut, stalking(?), Ra's is a gentleman, dinner, first date, Alfred has a shotgun ready for Ra's
Tumblr media
(Y/N) has known Ra's for a very long time. A little over 11 years now. Ra's has in a way see him grow up from being a little Robin, a little, defenseless child to a brave vigilante by the name of (V/N). He had, alongside his family had run ins with Ra's.
Ra's has tried to kill him a few times, tried to destroy Gotham City just to cleanse it again, kidnapped (Y/N) once to try to brainwash him and has an unhealthy obsession with Bruce being his heir.
He has heard it in many of his monologues through the years. It made Alfred roll his eyes and just cock his shotgun in response. It was a scary sight once, when (Y/N) was just a teen. (Y/N) knew that Alfred doesn't have a no kill rule like Bruce.
Somehow, Alfred is now the main rival of the infamous Ra's al Ghul. Over Bruce. At first, (Y/N) was concerned for his grandpa, but Alfred assured him that nothing will happen to him.
Now, (Y/N) has just started college, paid for by Bruce who made a college fund when he adopted (Y/N) officially. (Y/N) cried when he got accepted and then told that it was paid.
He still lived at home while he was looking for a job to work while in college and to get his own place and officially move out of the manor and be independent. Bruce advised him to save all of that money and use it when he starts officially working after college and to get a head start on his future apartment.
But for some reason, (Y/N) has seemed to forgotten about Ra's. He has been quiet and the family's attention was always on Gotham rouges for the last year so Ra's was not even on his mind at his point. But it has all changed one random day.
(Y/N) walked through the doors of the manor, tired from working. He took his shoes off and quickly went to the kitchen where his family was seated, looking confused, worried and angry. (Y/N) was confused and Bruce quickly walked over to his son, shielding him from the kitchen.
" Hey (Y/N), how was work? "Bruce asked and (Y/N) just raised a brow. He wasn't fooled with anything that they were trying to pull. He is an adult, not a child.
" Bruce, you know I love you, but whatever it is, I can handle it. " (Y/N) said, crossing his arms. Bruce wanted to sigh, but choose not to. He stepped aside to let (Y/N) see what was the fuss about.
He stopped when he saw flowers, a big bouquet light purple flowers. The boys stepped aside too, letting him look at the flowers. (Y/N) leaned forward, sniffing them. They were fresh, that much was obvious and they were safe to come close to them.
(Y/N) noticed a small card on the kitchen island next to it. The little card was emerald green with his name written over it in beautiful golden cursive letters. (Y/N) got an uneasy feeling, but still took the card to read through his contents.
To my (Y/N),
A sign of my love and courtship,
and a perfect gift for an elegant and dainty person.
Yours, Ra's al Ghul.
(Y/N) blinked a few times before opening his mouth, but he closed it quickly. Is this a game? A psychological trick for (Y/N) to let his guard down?
Ra's al Ghul is everything but a liar, but that doesn't mean that he won't trick you into a false sense of security.
" What the hell is this? " (Y/N) asked, turning to his family. Bruce wanted to say something, but he didn't know what.
" We don't know. It has been here when we all came back. " Damian said and he looked disturbed. He walked over to (Y/N) to hug him and (Y/N) wrapped his arms around him.
" Damian, don't take this the wrong way, but your grandfather is nuts." (Y/N) said, looking back at the card.
" These are called Asteria. They are meant for expressing the love in subtle ways. " Damian said, just hugging his older brother a bit tighter.
" Well, that is nice to know. " (Y/N) said and Jason looked outright disturbed.
" Whatever it is, I don't like it. " Tim and Dick agreed with him, voicing their agreements with their own opinions.
" Master (Y/N), I always have a shotgun ready in case of an emergencies. " Alfred said and (Y/N) chuckled at that.
" I will keep that in mind Alfred. " (Y/N) said and Bruce sighed quietly.
" I don't think I need to tell you to stay more vigilant... And I need to upgrade our security system. How do they keep breaking in? " Bruce wondered and Alfred just glanced towards the pantry.
His beloved shotgun is always ready.
" Al Ghuls can break in anywhere. " (Y/N) said, glancing at Damian with a smile on his face, trying to show Damian that he wasn't mad at him. Damian just sighed quietly, hugging his brother tightly.
" Okay, when we are out somewhere one of us will escort you. Same goes for patrol. "
(Y/N) sighed, shaking his head. " Bruce, I don't need bodyguards. " (Y/N) protested, but Bruce shook his head. " (Y/N)- "
" I can be with him father! " Damian chimed in and (Y/N) nearly gave in an urge to coo at him. Nearly.
" Dames, my baby brother, I love you, but you have school. " (Y/N) explained and then turned back to Bruce.
" I'm not having anybody tag me. " (Y/N) stated firmly.
" Okay, how about a compromise? " Bruce suggested and (Y/N) nodded, waiting for the proposition.
" You can switch to online classes until we figure it out. " Bruce said and (Y/N) shook his head.
" No. I won't stop my life because of him. " (Y/N) said and Bruce knows that there won't be a compromise with him.
" Just promise me you will be careful then. " Bruce said and (Y/N) nodded.
" If you need me too, I can drive you to college. " Jason chimed in.
" I can drive you back. " Dick added.
" And I can make sure that your phone is impossible to track. " Tim said and (Y/N) nodded.
" And I can give my blades. " Damian said and (Y/N) now cooed at Damian.
" Oh my sweet dear Dames, I knew you loved me. " (Y/N) joked and Damian grumbled something before letting go of (Y/N).
" I tolerate you at best. " Damian grumbled and (Y/N) smiled at his brother.
The next thing that has happened was a very expensive looking suit made in his measurements and in Ra's signature color, emerald. It was hanging in his room and (Y/N) simply went to Alfred who took his beloved shotgun to clear the manor.
The others were quick to ditch work or school and came home. Bruce closed off (Y/N)'s room as a crime scene and Tim quickly went down to scan the cameras. Alfred made some tea for (Y/N) who was a little bit shaken up.
He still held on his shotgun, watching his oldest grandson like a hawk. (Y/N) was shaken up because his room, his space, was defiled in a way. Sure, he didn't look for anything specific, he just left the suit, but it still felt like he has been defiled. It's the sanctity of the room.
" How are they breaking in? " Jason asked as he walked in from the garden. He scoured the area around the mansion. He didn't like this at all.
" Master Jason, they are Al Ghuls, they can break in into almost everything. " Dick said from the outside as he was still searching for clues.
" This is insane. " Damian admitted, walking in with a tablet in his hands. " Nothing on the footage. " Damian said, putting the tablet down.
(Y/N) took a sip of his tea, trying to not really think about this.
" Was anybody at home? " (Y/N) asked and they all shook their heads. (Y/N) sighed quietly.
" He has to monitor us then. " (Y/N) said and Jason clicked his tongue.
" More like he monitors you. " Jason said, making Dick smack him at the back of his head.
" Hey! "
" Don't make the situation worse. " Dick said and Jason grumbled something that (Y/N) couldn't make out.
" He is getting ballsy. " (Y/N) muttered and Alfred nodded, shotgun still in his hold. (Y/N) glanced at Alfred who was holding the shotgun over his shoulders, looking like cowboy.
" How long will you hold on? " (Y/N) asked Alfred who just shrugged.
" Until master Bruce clears your room. And until we know what the old bastard wants. "
Just the person that Alfred mentioned walked in.
" No sign of a break in, I scanned for any type of drugs, there are none, no listening devices and that's about it. " Bruce said, rubbing his face. What does Ra's want with his son?
" When he comes to Gotham, I'm going to maim him. " Bruce growled out and (Y/N) knew that it was just a matter of time when Ra's came. The others are aware of it too.
(Y/N) won't be going on patrol alone anymore.
The day when Ra's came to Gotham came about a week later. (Y/N) finished everything he needed for the day and was walking down the college stone stairs. He went to the parking lot to get his car, but stopped when he saw Ra's standing next to his car.
He looked great as always. A dark green suit, similar to the one he sent to (Y/N), a few rings on his fingers. He smirked in his usual way when he saw (Y/N). (Y/N) just clicked his tongue in annoyance.
" Ra's... "
" Did you like my gifts? I have one more on the way. " Ra's said, walking closer. (Y/N) stood still, allowing Ra's to walk closer to him. My God, Ra's since when did Ra's become so good looking? Wait... What the actual fuck is happening? Why is he thinking that way?!
" I don't know what you are playing at, but all of this has to stop. " (Y/N) said and Ra's tilted his head.
" I know you still have the flowers and I know you have the suit I have sent you. If you really wanted me to stop, you would make a point to burn them habibi. " Ra's said ever so smoothly, using the pet name. (Y/N) knows a good amount of Arabic thanks to Damian and he blushed.
" Ra's, it's wrong. I have known you since I was 8. It's fucking wrong. " (Y/N) tried and Ra's shook his head with an amused smile.
" I can see you don't really mean it. And why not give it a chance? You know I pick my partners carefully. I know you very well and I know you are strong. I want a strong partner and I know you can be that. "
" This isn't a ploy to make Bruce or Damian take over the League? " (Y/N) asked and Ra's shook his head.
" It's not a ploy habibi. " Ra's started, something shining in his eyes. (Y/N) saw the sheer sincerity and honesty behind the eyes. Those two qualities are often replaced with coldness.
" Ra's- "
" How about we give it a chance? I promise you we will be in Gotham and won't leave the city at all. " Ra's said, now in (Y/N)'s personal space, taking his hands into his, still looking into his eyes. (Y/N) swallowed as he looked down at their hands. He knows that he should say no to these feelings that started surfacing during the week.
He should say no.
" Okay. I will give it a chance. " (Y/N) said and Ra's smiled. (Y/N) looked up to see a sincere smile, the one that gave him wrinkles around his eyes.
" Can I kiss your cheek? " Ra's asked and (Y/N) nodded, not trusting his voice right now.
Ra's kissed his cheek so gently that (Y/N) wouldn't believe that he is an assassin.
" I will see you tonight habibi. Wear the suit I sent you for tonight. I will pick you up at 6. " Ra's said, glancing behind (Y/N)'s shoulder. (Y/N) turned around where his dad was and he seemed pissed.
Ra's was already gone and (Y/N) knows he will hear no end of it.
Nobody could stop him from going on the date. Damian was conflicted, but if it made (Y/N) happy, then sure. But he will go after his grandfather if he hurts him.
The rest of the family tried to get him to stay home, but (Y/N) said that he will go. Alfred said that if he gets hurt, Ra's will be dead by sunrise and won't be able to come back to life with the pit.
The others tried to agree with Alfred and Damian, but they couldn't. But they had to trust (Y/N)'s decision. And who knows? Maybe it will be a... Well, it will at least be a better story than Twilight.
And if Ra's is serious, Bruce will be make sure to test him. Damian too. Alfred will be ready with his shotgun. He has been dropping bodies for years before becoming a butler.
He is not afraid.
(Y/N) was picked up by Ra's at 6 pm on the dot. The ride was filled with a nice conversation and a lot of compliments from Ra's. The restaurant that Ra's choose was extremely fancy and (Y/N) knows that the food is good here.
The dinner was the best dinner that (Y/N) has ever had. The date went well too. Ra's and (Y/N) had a conversation about everything that came to mind and they didn't even touch on their... Other jobs, well, a better phrase would be their other sides.
(Y/N) loved it and then, Ra's took him to the hotel where he was staying. It was a penthouse, how could it not be? Then they kissed officially and then passion overtook them both.
(Y/N) opened his eyes, gently rubbing his eyes. He turned around and he didn't see Ra's next to him. He was alone in bed. Where is Ra's? He was wearing boxers and he was covered in love bites. Ra's saw how tactile he is during sex and would he leave him?
He tried to get up, but his hips were hurting. He hissed as he laid back down. He didn't want to strain himself.
After a minute, the door opened and Ra's entered with bags. He smiled when he saw that (Y/N) was awake.
" Good morning habibi. I just went to get us breakfast from your favorite place. " He said, sitting down next to him with the bags, showing him what he bought.
All of (Y/N)'s favorite things.
" Thanks. " (Y/N) said and Ra's saw something in (Y/N)'s demeanor.
" Did you think I really left you all alone without a reason? Oh habibi. " Ra's crooned at him, kissing him softly with a smile.
After they separated, (Y/N) sat up straight and started eating. It was nice and after they ate, Ra's cleaned up and laid back down with (Y/N). (Y/N) still remembers last night.
How Ra's treated him gently, kissing him gently, making sure that he gelt good throughout... And the aftercare was something that (Y/N) didn't believe that Ra's knew. He was cleaned up in the shower, then Ra's helped him with putting his underwear on and then led him to the bed where he embraced him tightly.
" So (Y/N), what do you think? " Ra's asked, hands gently caressing his body in a nonsexual way.
" I think I would like a second date. " (Y/N) said, nuzzling Ra's neck.
" And your family is okay with this? "
" Oh not really, but they trust me and if you hurt me, there will be hell to pay. " (Y/N) said, closing his eyes.
" Are you still tired? " Ra's asked and (Y/N) hummed in agreement. Ra's adjusted and (Y/N) fell asleep quickly. Ra's didn't fall asleep, instead he just watched (Y/N) and his face.
He didn't know when his feelings started for him, but he wanted to do this properly. If he did anything against (Y/N), Bruce would be there to destroy the League and Alfred would kill him.
He had no doubt about it.
But he didn't have any plans to hurt (Y/N). He will make sure to show (Y/N) that he genuinely loves him and that this is not a ploy for any of his schemes.

Unexpected Conversations
Reader is Bruce Wayne’s daughter
Relationship: mentioned! Established Wayne! Reader x Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne x daughter reader, Damian Wayne x sister reader, Wayne reader talking with Ra Al Ghul
Summary: based on my written prompt on which Wayne reader gets kidnap by League of Assassins but gets a conversation of life with Ra Al Ghul
Tumblr media
You didn’t know how you got into this situation. You and Dick were just having a nice night together in your shared apartment only to get attacked by minions of the League of Assassins. Dick managed to get rid of them but only to kidnap you while he fought back. Now you are being taken by Talia, your younger half brother’s biological mother. You stay quiet for the whole time, knowing Talia isn’t someone you should mess with. At least they weren't tied up but you were still intimidated by her presence. Despite being Batman’s daughter, your father was quite an overprotective father and you could only help out at the cave, since he wanted you to have a normal childhood and you knew you weren’t the vigilante type.
“You're quite the quiet type” Talia’s strong voice suddenly spoke up as you were in your thoughts.
“Umm, I… well you did kidnap me all of the sudden and I know you kidnapped me to lure my father and Damian, isn’t that right” you answered the woman in front of you, not knowing what to say.
“ I guess the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree” she muttered to herself quietly but you pick it up anyway.
“Are you saying that you initially thought I don’t have anything related to my father except my hair color” you said out loud to her.
“Well your stubborn and smart, I have to admit that”
You then wondered if Talia just complimented you in her own way, seeing the similarities with Damian and his mother, as you remember all the times you bonded with him when he was adjusting his time at the manor as well as getting use to doing normal activities kids in his age usually do, including interrupting date nights with Dick. Speaking of Dick, you hope he would survive your father’s wrath and Damian as well.

(Dick’s POV)
“Tell me that again” ordered the Bat as he glared at his former protege while Damian was sharpening his katana while Alfred almost fainted at the shock of the lady being kidnapped. Nightwing, in all things that terrifies himself when it comes to Bruce Wayne or the Batman, it always has to do with him being in a relationship with his daughter. When the first time he told him how he found out, he purposely sent him to secret missions as a test before that meeting to see if he is worthy of protecting his daughter. He remembers how he purposely intimidated her ex-boyfriend in high school and the time when he had to have the “talk”.
However, this is worse. He not only failed to protect his girlfriend but ended up getting kidnapped by one of Batman’s greatest foes, Ra Al Ghul. He knows it’s Bruce getting understandably scared for his daughter’s safety but he also knows that he will receive his wrath for letting her get in danger.
“Grayson” as Damian stands up after finding sharpening his katana. “I expect you are going to face punishment for failing to protect my sister” he glares at him. “ When we have our daily training next time, I won’t hold back”.
Dick knew this was going to happen. Ever since the little bat came to live at the manor, he grew attached to you since she was the only one who welcomed him with open arms despite the circumstances. However overtime, he decided to purposely get in between in his intimate moments with her, much to his chagrin. You often scold him like a child who stole cookies from the jar, whenever he tries to reprimand Damian for spoiling his dates with you.
“Get ready” as Batman suddenly spoke up as Nightwing and Robin looked at him. “ I guess mother is nice enough to let us know where sister is located at” as he looks at the message being sent to them. “Well it’s the knight’s job to save the princess from the villain” as nightwing looked at the coordinates.
“Tt, you as the knight in shining armor,like in those video games and stories in children’s books. Please, you must be joking, maybe the wandering traveler if anything” he bluntly puts in after seeing Dick’s expression of being a knight of saving his princess.
“Hey, it’s not stupid and besides, when we were kids we often played princess, where I was the knight in shining armor, y/n as the princess that needs to be saved from the monster, with Bruce being the dragon.” He snaps at the little bird as Damian was shocked that his own father was interested in this type of activity.
“Well let’s just get going. Who knows what your grandfather and mother are doing to her. She must be scared of being alone” as Dick frets over the failure of not protecting the woman he loves. “Don’t worry, I am sure that Miss y/n would make it out alright, she is stubborn as her father, so I know her strength will help her persevere” as Alfred gets the bat plane ready.
“ I am willing to fight against my mother if she does anything to my sister” as Damian enters the bat plane.

(Reader POV)
As you got to where Talia wants you, you were surprised that instead of a prison, it was a nice room. Knowing you were taken by the League of Assassins, your best bet was that you were taken to a prison, knowing what they were capable of. But why did you get a guest room if anything?
“ I wasn’t expecting this type of hospitality” as you break the silence after seeing the place.
“ Well knowing the possibility of Gotham's princess being kidnapped may be public, the least I could do is not make it not too extreme. Also you aren’t much of a threat, so there’s that” as Talia responds to you.
“Yeah that type of news is not appealing, but you are aware that my father, Damian and Nightwing are coming, right?
“Yes I’m aware, I even sent them the message of your location here” as Talia looks at you.
“You could have even tie me up or sent me to the dungeons just like the other people you have targeted as well as giving them a threat but you didn’t” as you wondered out loud at Talia
“ Well it’s true we wanted to draw Batman and Damian out but Ra Al Ghul did want to talk to you specifically since he wanted to know the other child of your father” as Talia sits in the chair.
“ I am afraid I don’t have much to offer. Other than being the child of the man you called as your “beloved”. I don’t have any martial art skills nor am not trained as a vigilante. If anything I am just the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Former Lady of the house, nothing more, nothing less.” You admit to Talia at wondering what Ra Al Ghul wanted with you.
“I think that is where you are wrong. You managed to question me and my objectives. You are a strong willed person. You accepted my son, despite the circumstances.” As she looks at you “For that, I must thank you” as she gives a small smile.
You look at her gently, knowing that deep down, she truly loves and cares for her son. “ He still cares for you, Miss Talia, even if he has to fight against you” as you offer a smile.
The woman didn’t say anything else as she turned to walk out but unbeknownst to you, a smile graced her face, when she heard those words.
—————————————————————————————
You then waited, getting ready for whatever Ra Al Ghul wanted to talk to you about, as well as waiting for your father, brother and Nightwing to get here.
Then Ra Al Ghul appears in the room you are in. You then stand up straight sitting getting ready for what questions he will ask. He then sits on the chair across from you. You gulped to yourself internally, fearing what could happen but you know it’s better to stay silent since you don't know what plans he has in store.
“ So you're the young Miss y/n Wayne ?” as Ra Al Ghul spoke up. “Yes I am, y/n Wayne ''you answered his question. “ You must Ra’s Al Ghul, also known as the head of the League of Assassins and the Head of the Demon, am I right.”
“Quite a brazen young lady yourself” Ra Al Ghul chuckles as he is amused that you managed to answer his question without hesitation and are aware who you are speaking too without fear showing.
“You must know why you are here” getting back on topic as Ra Al Ghul prepares some tea.
“From what I heard from your daughter, is that you just want to talk to me since you are aware that I am my father’s blood daughter. Which I question, why do you seek me, other than being Batman’s daughter, since I don’t have any skill or power that you probably want” you asked as you see him prepare a cup of tea for you.
“I just simply want to get to know you, the world of Bruce Wayne lives, when Batman isn’t present” as he prepares himself a cup of tea.
“ Well as you know, he is the CEO of Wayne Enterprise in the daytime…” you start off tentatively, not knowing where to start off.
“ I am aware of that, my dear. I mean he does other than mundane business” Ra Al Ghul cuts off.
“ If anything, he's my dad. He does normal things that fathers do with their children. Make sure they live a happy life full of love. Sure there are some times I don’t agree with him as Batman, but as always, I told him, even before going to work, to be safe and take good care of himself.” You answered instantly because you know your dad is a good man and his desire to protect Gotham comes from wanting a bright future for the people who lived in Gotham. Even when you had a bit of a sheltered life, you knew the world has its dangers simply due to the people in it. You understand you can only help your father, brother and Dick at the cave for patrol but at least you are helping them in your own way. While it was because your father is just being overprotective, you knew that that type of lifestyle isn’t meant for you. The only thing that matters to you is your family’s coming home alive and the people they protect.
“What is it like for him as your father?” Ra Al Ghul inquired
“ He does normal things like any father does with their children. Spend time with their children, doing tea parties, reading bedtime stories and tuck you in bed, play princess with him as the dragon while the knight fights him” you mentioned a few things you and your dad did, as you remembered a time when you did his makeup for your princess tea party at age five.
“But my grandson didn’t do this father's children activities, why is that” he questions again after hearing the things you did with your father when you’re young.
“ Well for starters, he was raised in an environment where he couldn’t do those activities. You and Ms.Talia raised him to be the heir of the league of assassins. Instead of him playing, he spent most of the time with his intense training. With that type of environment, he didn’t know how to communicate without force nor interact with other kids in his age group when he was new to the manor. When he was forced to live at the manor, he was upset because he was away from a place he only knew as home. My father had to have a chance to know him and granted, it’s only Batman who is with him most of the time not Bruce Wayne, or that’s what Damian might have thought for the first few months. While I can say, Talia does love and care for Damian, she didn’t give him a room to be vulnerable with his feelings. With the initial hostility between him and my father along with Nightwing, I only saw him as a boy who needed acceptance and to show him what it is like to have what you called a mundane life. That’s why I always plan family time with my father and Damian, so they could have a sense of normalcy of a family.” You explained as you wondered what is wrong with having a regular life.
“ Aren’t Bruce Wayne and Batman the same person, what do you mean him being Batman to my grandson but not Bruce Wayne ” he wonders out loud to you
“ Even if he isn’t we’re his suit, his Batman attitude still comes up when Damian is going against his orders. As Batman, well you already know his temperament so I won’t explain that part. He scolds Damian, because he isn’t doing the rules of the Bat and Damian feels attacked because his feelings are hurt. I know Damian is doing the right thing but in ways my father won’t agree with. After all, my father isn’t good when it comes to communication, so that’s what causes the initial issues” You offer an explanation to the man in front of you, tactfully while looking at the tea cup on the table. You remember when Dick first came to the mansion something similar happened. He ran away from the manor to find Tony Zucco or when he and your father had a huge argument due to a patrol incident that led him to be more independent as a vigilante.
“ But I have one question” as you look at him directly. “Go on”
“ If you are interested in my father and daughter bond, since you seem to wonder why Bruce Wayne or Batman would do this, shouldn’t you be aware of this already? You have a daughter, didn’t you at least spend time with her ?” You questioned as you noticed that Talia’s parenting must be due to how her father raised her as part of the League of Assassins.
You notice he didn’t answer your question. “ I’ll take your silence as a no. Yes, you did cherish her but you didn’t bond with her as much. For all the long life you always had pride in, you didn’t use it to spend time with your loved ones. I know your goal is to build your version of a perfect world, but it only would create more damage. The perfect world doesn’t exist, since we’re only human. Good intentions could also cause huge problems as well. This may be an imperfect world but I know there is still beauty in this world.” As you answered your own question, knowing his goals of his utopia was with good intentions but seeing the consequences was the result of his worldview getting jaded overtime as well as the Lazarus pit side effects.
“But what about the corruption in the world? Due to that, the world has been tainted. Gotham is known for the crime and the corruption in it. How do you still see the world as beautiful” He challenged you.
“I have already acknowledged the world may have its ugly sides but I have people who taught me to never give up and they have always guided me and in turn show me all the beauty of the world. We all have ugly sides we want to hide but it’s better to accept it in order to be a better person. To improve the world, start with yourself, only then changes will happen. It may be small but it’s something” You answered his question.
You suddenly heard swords clattering. You knew your father, Damian and Dick came to get you out of here. “ You always criticized humanity for being a plague for their corruption but you also did the same things for the sake of power and control. What makes you any different from them ?”
Batman, Robin and Nightwing to the room you were in.
“Let her go” demanded Batman as he got ready to throw one of his batarangs. Robin with his katana and Nightiwng with his escrima sticks as they get into a fighting stance.
“ Fine I’ll let her go, after all she gave me a good conversation I hadn’t had for years” he admits as he stands up while you look at the whole situation, thinking a fight would happen.
“ You're letting us go that easy, what did you do to my daughter?” Batman growls at the DemonHead.
“To be honest I just simply chat with her. Quite a smart woman I say so myself” he admits as you go stand up to reunite with your family.
“I let you go off easily since this young lady here isn’t much of a threat” As Ra Al Ghul simply walks into the corridor.
“Sister, what did he do to you?” Damian asks in concern for you.
“To be honest, I don't know. All we did was just talk. He gave me tea although I didn’t drink it.” You admit since you just had a long talk with one of your dad’s greatest foes and managed to be alive as well.
“This isn’t the rescue I was imagining in my head” Nightwing admits while shaking his head.
“It’s alright, I am okay, mentally well and you guys are here. That's all that matters” you said as you pecked Nightwing's lips.
As you return home with your family in the Batplane, you relay the events that happen with your talk with Ra Al Ghul. He is just a human just like you who happens to have powers from the Lazarus Pit. He has his ideology and philosophy based on his experience but it is also flawed simply because just like everyone, he is human. However, some part of you hopes he could realize there is more to life than achieving one’s goal, something you have to remind your father now and then, because life is fleeting. Not only for the future but to be in the moment with your loved ones.

The Canary and the Robin (Jason Todd x Reader)
Summary: You find Jason being tortured by the Joker and decided to take him in, imperfections and all. If he happens to be your soulmate, so be it
Warnings: I know reader acts like a white person in a horror movie but bear with me, OOC Talia, descriptions of torture, Joker hurting Jason, descriptions of flashbacks of torture, allusions to sexual assault from the Joker unto Jason but not descriptive at all, panic attack, ignore locations and timelines, timer soulmates once they turn 8, swearing, a lotta angst (literally starts out with Jason’s funeral), but happy ending, hurt/comfort, Jason doesn’t have guns or an autopsy scar in this cause he’s Robin still and lemme tell you it’s so unnatural for me to write him without those, perspective switching, conscious wording (so everything is written like that for a reason), Jason’s awful parents and their drinking and harassment (just descriptions on them yelling and drinking and smoking), spoilers to Great Gatsby, kinda open ended, but also not at all? if that makes sense, lemme know if I missed anything
Word Count: 12k so grab some snacks and tissues
Canary in a coal mine is a common term meant to describe something that’s unusually sensitive to conditions that make it a useful early indicator of negatively changing circumstances.
Jason’s funeral was on May 16th, just eight months after he had been taken by the Joker. Alfred had chosen daisies, lilacs, and lotuses for the flowers, but Bruce brought a bouquet of hyacinths to lay on his son’s casket. As much as Bruce Wayne liked to flaunt his wealth, these hyacinths were hand pulled from his own gardens. Roots and dirts still clung to the end of the stems when Jason’s coffin was lowered into the ground.
Dick had come in from Bludhaven. When he had heard the news, his timer stopped and reversed itself until it added a year and a half onto his time. He had just gotten a brother and had been learning how to be a role model when his brother was dragged away from him, kicking and screaming. It wasn’t fair, Dick kept repeating to himself. A teenager shouldn’t be targeted just because he eagerly trailed on Batman’s heels, snarky comebacks and smirks ready to fire.
There was a public funeral where paparazzi clicked away at their cameras and Bruce stood stoically in the front row, clearing his throat at the podium when he had to make a eulogy. There was then a private funeral where the casket was actually lowered beneath a gladiolus bush. There were no eulogies for none of the family could bring themselves to say much. It was just Bruce, Alfred, Dick, and Barbara. Selina Kyle showed up that night in Bruce’s room and Dick pretended not to hear Bruce’s sobs. Alfred stood in the doorway of Jason’s old room, feather duster in hand. After a couple of minutes, he hung his head and walked off, closing the door behind him. Nothing was cleaned.
The next day, tabloids displayed the pictures of Bruce Wayne standing by a casket. Bruce stopped investing in any companies that did. His own stock dropped, but Bruce wasn’t answering his financial advisor’s calls. He wasn’t answering any calls.
It was late one night and Dick couldn’t sleep. He had been wanting to return to Bludhaven, but whenever he opened his suitcase, he couldn’t bring himself to pack. He found Alfred in the kitchen, pouring some hot tea. “I figured you would join me one night,” Alfred commented without looking back.
Dick couldn’t help but chuckle, rubbing his eyes. “Your sixth sense is never wrong, Alfred.”
Alfred slid a cup over to Dick who took it thankfully, not caring that the tea burnt his tongue. Perhaps it was what he deserved for not being there to help Jason. “I should’ve-”
“Mister Grayson,” Alfred cut him off. “The Joker was ten steps ahead of Batman. Not even the powerful Nightwing could’ve helped. And you could not have flown to Africa in time.”
“It was closed casket,” Dick whispered out. “I didn’t even get to see my little brother before he was gone.” His voice cracked and he cleared his throat.
“It was closed casket because Master Wayne couldn’t find Master Jason’s…” Alfred exhaled and corrected himself, “He couldn’t find Master Jason.”
Dick’s head lifted and his hands clenched around his cup. “What?” he breathed out. Desperation filled his voice, “but Alfie, he could still be out there! Jason could be alive!” Alfred simply gave him a stern look and Dick’s stomach bubbled with nausea. “Yeah,” he muttered bitterly. “I don’t know what I was thinking.” His jaw tensed and after a moment, he decided, “I’m going to go back to Bludhaven tomorrow.”
“Safe travels,” is all Alfred said.
It was then that Bruce woke from a nightmare of his dead son screaming out for him.
~~~~
You hadn’t meant to be passing by Arkham Asylum. It wasn’t something one did intentionally; in fact, many people went out of their way to avoid it. But it seemed as if fate wasn’t on your side today, for when your car broke down right outside Arkham Asylum, you didn’t notice the watch on your wrist ticking down quicker and quicker. You swore to yourself and took the mace out of your glove compartment before sliding your keys in between your fingers. Arkham Asylum had been practically abandoned for years, but perhaps there was a janitor or receptionist who could help you get service. Then you could call a mechanic and get the hell out of there.
The gates to Arkham had rust creeping up the edges and the lock clanged sharply against its chains. Maybe there wasn’t going to be a receptionist in the building… But perhaps there would be a phone you could use. In order for the gates to creak open, you had to force your bodyweight against the metal and try to shove the lock out of the way, praying you didn’t get tetanus in the process.
The door to Arkham, however, swung open without a sound. It seemed as if someone had been regularly visiting the Asylum, even if there was no one to visit – or love – in the building. “Hello?” you stage whispered, phone flashlight on, and finger on the button on your mace.
There was clearly a reason why the public wasn’t exposed to Arkham. All reports were classified and no photographers were allowed in. Wide-eyed and mouth slightly agape, you stared around at Arkham Asylum. The halls were long and dark, meant to cause paranoia and confusion. It was certainly working on you. The only light peeking through was from the grime covered windows and your flashlight. The ceiling was crumbling slightly and you were pretty sure Arkham had been under construction when it had been abandoned; otherwise, how could you explain all the dust, debris, and graffiti? You didn’t even want to think of the disease-carrying rodents that were surely scurrying underneath your feet.
“Is anything here? That can help me?” Your voice echoed down the cell block, vibrating off the metal bars and old bunks.
You reeled back when your foot kicked a pebble, sending it ricocheting off your sneaker. After the pebble settled some yards away, you took in a steadying breath. You heard a faint sound, one that didn’t sound at all like a pebble. “Hello?” you asked again. Shadows danced around as you shone your flashlight down the hall, messing with your mind.
When you strained your ears, it sounded as if a faint wail could be heard. Your brows furrowed with worry and instinctively, you started towards it. Your watch ticked down faster as disquietude and anxiety rippled through you like snakes, biting and twisting in your veins. Your flashlight bounced over empty, desolate cells as your pace quickened and the screams got louder. You contemplated calling the police, but when you checked your phone, you didn’t have any service. And who knew if the police would help or not? Arkham was a place only the brave or stupid went; right now, you were pretty sure you were the latter.
The screams took you deeper and deeper into the Asylum and you prayed that you would be able to find your way out. If you ever got out… your mind immediately thought.
It wasn’t long before the blood curdling howls shook you to your bones. They seemed to be coming from a cell, yet when you pointed your flashlight towards it, heart thumping at what you might find, there was nothing. But the screams were there. You weren’t making them up. Where the hell were they coming from– oh.
A shiver ran up your spine when you noticed the comical trapdoor in the corner of the cell. You wondered if the Arkham architects intentionally put it there when they were designing this horror house, or if an inmate had scraped a hidden passageway with a spoon they stole from the cafeteria.
Nonetheless, when you pried open the door, a wall of whimpers and cries from torture hit you full force. You shook your head, steeling yourself, before swallowing down the queasiness. The goosebumps on your arms were full-time residents now.
Your feet carried you down the dirt steps of the trapdoor. Your mind wasn’t particularly your own. Your brain was foggy. Your body felt like a child had taken your hand and was leading you down the steps. Later in your life, when you thought back to that moment, you knew the universe had been guiding you. But even if you didn’t make it out of Arkham Asylum, you knew your life was going to drastically change. The nonexistent hand squeezed yours in comfort as your heart jumped and pounded when the faint light at the bottom of the stairs grew brighter.
A small chamber resided under Arkham Asylum, as you found out that day. In the chamber were two people. One held a crowbar dripping with blood. His back was turned to you, but any citizen of Gotham would recognise that pastel green and purple suit anywhere. The Joker was alive.
But the second person caught your eye. He was strung up from the ceiling, crusty, brown chains trapping him midair. The red outfit he was wearing was being held together by tatters, but you didn’t know if the outfit was originally red or covered with blood. A black and yellow cape was clinging onto the victim’s back, burnt and torn. A green utility belt had been thrown in the corner, its pockets overturned and emptied.
And your timer buzzed against your wrist.
You didn’t register it at first, but after a moment of incessant buzzing, you tore your horrified stare away from the ruined man and to your wrist. A crude joke bounced into your head: so either my soulmate is the Joker or someone who wronged him… Either way, not ideal.
The Joker stood proud and tall, shoulders thrown back and grin wide. “Come on, Robby,” he taunted. “You and I both know these little excursions of ours go better when you make noise. How I love to make you sing…”
It was then you registered the Robin symbol on the man’s breast. You slowly pieced everything together, realising that the person in front of you was the presumably dead Robin. You couldn’t help the little, amazed curse word that slipped out from between your lips.
The Joker slid out a syringe from his pocket and slunk up beside Robin, injecting the green serum into his neck. Joker chuckled as he pressed the liquid further into Robin’s neck, whispering into his ear, “now, now, you mustn’t leave me, Robby. But whatever would you leave for? Now that the Bats has forgotten you.” Joker was mercilessly teasing the sidekick, spit flicking onto his cheek. Robin whimpered, a parched and cracked noise from the back of his throat.
“Louder, Robby, louder!” The Joker coaxed in a cooing voice. You grimaced and wanted to crawl out of your skin at his voice. Once you realised your mace wasn’t going to do you any good, your eyes darted around the small torture dungeon. Eventually, they landed on a discarded, bent pipe that had a disturbing red colour coated on. You willed yourself not to think of what the substance was.
Even though Robin’s limp, swinging body was facing towards you, you doubted he could see you. With the drugs running through his veins, his vision would surely be blurred and his mind muddled.
It was just your luck when, as you were inching towards the pipe, your phone decided to work and began buzzing loudly, indicating a call from your friend, Talia. The Joker whirled around, crowbar in hand and you squealed, grabbing the pipe. Before the Joker could react, his eyes widening in shock, you swung the pipe at his head. With the clang of metal against skull, the Joker collapsed, unconscious. You stared down at him, disbelief flooding your body. Oh my god, I just killed the Joker. Or, at the very least, gave him a good concussion. Your hands shook as a little pool of blood seeped out from Joker’s head. You dropped the pipe and it clattered to the dirt floor. A little groan that escaped Robin and your still-ringing phone brought you back to Earth.
“Shit, shit, I gotta get outta here,” you muttered, looking around frantically. Your phone kept ringing and with a swear, you brought it to your ear. “What?” you growled out.
“Wow, what has your panties in a twist?” Talia asked back snarkily.
You held your phone between your shoulder and your head as you hurried towards Robin. “Nothing, nothing, sorry,” you muttered as you attempted to free him from the chains. “Why’re you calling?”
“Why are you so stressed? You sound like you just ran a marathon,” Talia said through the phone. You could envision her checking her nails while doing so.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” You finally got Robin’s wrists to slip from the chains and he fell down onto you. You grunted under his weight. Apparently, just because he had been starved and tortured for months didn’t mean he had lost his superhero muscle.
Talia paused for a moment and you could practically hear the gears in her brian turning. “Do you need me to help hide a body?” she asked suddenly.
You laughed nervously as you shifted Robin to your shoulder and began dragging him towards the steps. “No?” you finally answered. “Though if you wanted to meet me by Arkham Asylum with your working car and a cure for an almost dead superhero, that would be great.”
“I will be there in twenty minutes.”
~~~~
“How did this happen?” Talia demanded, more curiosity in her voice than malice and anxiety. You were in her passenger seat, staring at the wounded Robin who was laid in the back. Talia weaved through traffic with ease, headed towards the Yuyan Building.
“I don’t know!” you cried out, panic infusing itself into your blood. It felt similar to the way the Joker had infused serum into Robin. You clutched at the seatbelt, hoping it would take some of your dread. “My car just stopped working and then I was just going into Arkham Asylum like an idiot and I found the dead Robin! He was supposed to be dead, right? It was all over the news!”
“And then Batman got another Robin,” Talia added, almost bitterly. You shot her a confused look and she glanced over at you. Her eyes flickered down to your wrist before you yelled at her to focus on the road again. “You are a rational person, Y/n,” Talia began as the car screeched to a halt outside an imposing, ornate building. You stared up at it as Talia got out of the car. You scrambled to help her with Robin. The two of you each had one of his arms over your shoulders, his feet scraping along the ground, head lolling to the side, as you carried him in. “I do not think you would go into Arkham Asylum without something else guiding you,” Talia continued. “Do not think I did not notice your stopped timer. He is your soulmate, is he not?”
You nodded, not trusting your words. You were worried you would start crying if you actually had a moment to process all of the day’s events. “Will your dad help?” you asked finally, voice wavering.
Talia chuckled dryly, eyes narrowing on a fixed point ahead of you. She led you and Robin deeper into Yuyan Building. “If it gets on Batman’s good side? Absolutely.”
“I’ll take him after you’re done healing him,” you added quickly. “I’ll take him back home and care for him if you and your dad help me this one time.” You realised it sounded like you were begging for help. Briefly, you wondered what had happened in such a short time to make you care so much for Robin. Part of you decided it was what any rational, kind human being would do – help someone who was badly hurt – but another part of you knew that wasn’t the case. You felt tied to this boy you didn’t even know the name of. Whether it was through your soulmate bond or not, you knew you were connected to Robin. You felt his pain and terror. Even though he was unconscious, you could feel his resistance tugging against you. He didn’t want to go with you. He was scared of what you might do to him. His emotions dug into you and you felt a whimper crawling up your throat, begging for escape.
It was then you steeled yourself and decided one thing: you weren’t going to let your soulmate die.
Yuyan Building held deeper secrets, you realised. Talia directed you down long hallways and steep stairwells and you felt bad for the custodians who had to clean up Robin’s trail of blood. It was long minutes, full of you groaning under Robin’s weight and Talia looking unaffected, before Talia stopped at a large, ominous door.
You couldn’t look Ra’s in the eye as he slung Robin into the Lazarus Pit. You could only watch the bubbling green liquid as Robin slowly sunk to the bottom. Agonising minutes ticked by, halted only by Ra’s and Talia whispers to each other.
You hugged yourself tightly after five minutes passed and you called anxiously to Talia, “do- does he need help? Is he hurting? Why is it taking so long?”
“He had a lot of injuries, Y/n,” Talia reassured you, coming to place a hand on your shoulder in comfort. “He will be okay.”
Yeah. He’ll be okay.
~~~~
Jason’s eyes burned. Green was all that he could see. He tried to breathe in, but the only thing that filled his lungs was the green surrounding him. When the liquid filled his lungs and he coughed out, bubbles trailed up to the surface like a safety rope guiding the way.
Jason stretched a hand out in front of him, muscles aching at disuse. “Well, we wouldn’t want you to run away, would we, Robby?” The Joker’s voice called after him as Jason kicked his feet futilely. “Not our little prince!”
A flitting feeling coursed through Jason: curiosity and concern, but he was too weak to form a thought. His arm, reaching out towards the bubbles that led him upward, didn’t look like his own. He remembered the scars criss-crossing along it and he remembered the dirt and grime infecting cuts and burns, even digging its way underneath his nails, but he didn’t remember looking so… strong. Since when did he have the muscles and veins that looked like years of exercise had paid off? Batman had kept him fit – Robin needed to be able to hold his own, but he didn’t quite remember it working so well.
His hand finally breached the top of the green waves, grasping up towards breathable air and safety.
Green. Like the Joker. Another one of his charades. A playing card, to show Jason he wasn’t free yet. He was never free.
Everything was disillusioning. His vision veered sideways before becoming foggy and nausea crashed through Jason, like the waves in which he was trying to fight against.
“Stop struggling!” he heard someone cry out, “you’re making your own waves! You have to swim.”
He saw someone reaching out towards him and without a second thought, Jason extended his bandaged hand, clinging onto the buoy in the storm. Their hand was soft and comforting and dragged him out of the water. Jason allowed himself to be dragged. He didn’t have the energy to fight the Joker. He had given up much too long ago.
“What did you do to him?” someone asked once Jason fell to the ground. The world spun around him and he couldn’t recognise whomever was speaking. He gasped in desperate air, filling his deprived lungs.
“Take in a good, deep breath, Robby. Smell that blood? It’s yours. A reminder that Bats isn’t gonna come save you. Doesn’t it smell delicious?” The Joker hissed at him, inhaling himself. He cackled and licked his lips. “You’re a sweet little bird, aren’t you?”
“Why does he look like that?” the same voice asked. Jason heard a small thud over the ringing in his ears.
“The Lazarus Pit not only receives, but it returns, ten times stronger,” a deep voice explained. “It takes what it has been given, and it blossoms it into its full potential. What it needs to become.”
Jason flinched away from the hands that rested on him. The hands retreated and Jason wondered what new tactic the Joker was trying. The Joker never retreated.
The voices were getting more frantic and his heartbeat seemed amplified. As Jason was slowly lifted up, he passed out.
~~~~
The next time Jason woke up, the first thing he noticed was the clock. There was a digital clock on a small table beside him, green numbers staring unblinkingly up at him. Green as in the Joker. Clock as in a bomb. Does he want me to defuse the bomb? Or is it all a trick? The Joker never let me see any clocks. Time was a valuable construct, one the Joker used to his advantage. If Jason didn’t know how much time had passed, the Joker could stretch the days and the torture.
It took Jason a moment to blink the sleep from his mind. Then, he let his eyes flick around the room as his body stayed perfectly still. It was a tactic he learned from Batman – never let anyone know you were awake. He could categorise helpful information for later, such as possible escape routes, and if the Joker didn’t know he was awake quite yet, there would be less time for torture.
The former Robin was in a room. He didn’t recognise it and that scared Jason more than he would ever admit. There was a dresser opposite him with pictures on it. He couldn’t quite make out who was in the pictures, but it didn’t quite matter yet. A closet door was closed and next to it stood a tall mirror that had a blanket thrown over it. A small bookshelf sat beside him and when Jason had the mental capacity, he couldn’t help but feel the pull to read the titles. It smelled better than anything in a long time. Instead of urine and festering skin, this place smelled like lavender and vanilla.
It was only then Jason realised he was laying on a bed. And there were no restraints tying him down to it.
What new tactic was this? What scheme was the Joker pulling? What game did he want Jason to play? What was the objective? The trick Jason had to uncover to live another day?
Green and purple and yellow whirled around Jason and he gripped his head, begging the colours to stop. Carnival music played loudly in his ears, that same damn tune for the past thirty six hours.
Strapped to a chair, there was nowhere to escape the Joker’s mind games. Jason had been sedated more times than he could count and dragged to new locations where the Joker found new ways to torment him. Today’s lucky special was the Joker’s old hideout at the abandoned carnival.
It wasn’t long before the Joker’s voice rang out from within hidden speakers. “Show me those street smarts, Robby! Play with me. Maybe I’ll let you go…” he jeered and inveigled.
The spinning stopped and Jason planted his feet on the ground. His head dipped and his mouth hung open, eyes crossed and half-lidded. The Joker stood before him, leaning on his crowbar. “Ah, ah, ah,” the Joker tsked. “You're losing your touch, Robby.” The Joker ran his tongue over his teeth, lips curling up in a tantalising grin before lifting the crowbar back.
Jason didn’t hear anything before he blacked out.
It had seemed that he had blacked out in real life too, for the time had advanced three hours and the sun had sunk in the sky. Next to the clock was a tall glass of water and a small plate of crackers. Two pills of unassuming tylenol sat nearby.
Someone had been in here, Jason realised. The thought made his skin crawl and he quickly flung off the sheets, not used to the feeling of cotton. After a quick analysis of his body, even though his skin was already wrecked and flayed, there weren't the telltale nail marks on his thighs that the Joker had been there in his sleep. The only thing out of the ordinary were the bandages and cleaned wounds. His armour was nowhere to be seen and he had been stuffed into pyjama pants and a shirt that seemed a bit tight.
Panic flashed through his spine and Jason flung his legs over the mattress. He promptly collapsed and his knees ached at the impact. It took a moment of forcing his lungs open and letting oxygen flow through his system once more until he was able to crawl pathetically towards the covered mirror. His fingers twisted around the sheet and dragged it downward, letting it pool on the floor and around his legs.
Staring back at him wasn’t his face. It was the face of someone who had lived ten more years and seen fifty more years of battle.
Jason promptly swung his fist at the glass, shattering the mirror and letting the shards rain down. But he could still see his reflection. Jason forced his eyes away from the unfamiliar face and the scars he could feel burning into his skin.
Just a trick of the Joker. That’s all it ever was. He was never free and never more would believe so. Everything was consumed by that pale skin, green hair, and purple nails. Everything was a mind game followed by excruciating pain.
His gaze drifted back to the water and crackers. It could be tainted. But the Joker also needed him alive to continue their games. There was always a grace period for Jason to heal before the next session began.
He limped back to the bed, downed the water, not daring to touch the pills, and fell back onto the pillow. He shifted and adjusted the pillow. It felt uncomfortable. He threw it to the other side of the room before rubbing at his aching wrists. His skin there was red and irritated, not used to being out of chains. That was unusual, when Jason truly thought about it. The Joker knew how powerful Jason was. Jason had even managed to escape his chains once, back when he was healthy and convinced Batman would come and rescue him. But a bullet to the malnourished stomach was enough to stop anyone.
He kept massaging his hands until his fingers skirted over the bare skin of the inside left wrist. It felt like something should be there. Something was missing.
“Well well well,” Joker’s voice crooned in his ear. The man’s fingers curled around Jason's wrist. Long fingers tapped a tune on the proud watch that sat on Jason’s skin, ticking like a heartbeat. “Does our little Robby have a soulmate?”
The boy’s muscles tensed, protesting against the Joker for the first time in weeks. He had been trying to keep the watch hidden for as long as possible, but he should’ve known it was futile.
“But who on earth could love you?” The Joker questioned deridingly.
Jason’s cracked lips parted and he forced a “no” from his parched throat. “Don’t.”
The Joker giggled – a high pitched, ugly sound that would haunt Jason’s nightmare’s for years to come. “Oh… and have you met your true love yet?”
“Stop it.” Jason wiggled away from the Joker’s searing grip but nothing helped.
The psychopath’s nails embedded crescents into Robin's skin as he forced his wrist around. “No no no,” the Joker tsked as he watched the clock inch down towards zero. “You haven’t met them yet… what?” He turned back towards Jason, eyes wide with fake innocence. “You think they’re gonna come save you, Robby?” A burst of laughter bubbled from the murderer. “Never,” he hissed in Jason’s ear, making the boy cringe away, his chains swinging with him.
A sob crawled its way up Jason’s lungs as the Joker grabbed his chains, steadying him, before licking a stripe up Jason’s cheek, leaving behind saliva and horrid breath. The Joker then licked his lips, relishing in the taste of Robin’s blood and tears.
“You really think you deserve anyone?” The Joker whispered in his ear, more serious than Jason had ever seen him. His fist clenched around Jason’s watch and the boy let out a whimper. “You don’t.” The glass cracked under the Joker’s force. “Deserve shit.” He ripped the soulmate watch from Jason and threw it to the ground. The delicate watch sprang open and the timer stopped in its tracks.
Jason let out a guttural scream as the Joker ground the glass into the dirt with his heel.
~~~~
A loud thump yanked Jason out of sleep. A sharp feminine yelp followed and Jason was instantly on his feet, no matter the spots that danced in his vision.
A small voice in the back of his head that sounded suspiciously like Alfred chastised him for not staying in bed and letting his body heal. “Master Jason, how are you supposed to fight crime if you can’t even walk straight?”
Nevertheless, Jason pushed open the door, raggedly breathing and clutching his side. He was sure he looked like a serial killer of some sort, blood staining through his bandages and hair sloppily matted to his forehead from sweat.
A girl stared at him from across the room. She was smaller than him, was what Jason noticed first. He then noticed her eyes. They were a striking colour and seemed to bore into him, knowing his every want and desire. They were cautious, yet Jason thought he imagined excitement running deep within the girl.
“Who’re you?” Jason mumbled out, leaning heavily against the doorframe.
The girl took a breath and said, “I’m Y/n.” A blanket was curled around her feet, much like the blanket that Jason had snatched from the mirror hours earlier. Her hair was a bit messy and Jason categorised a pillow propped up against the armrest of the couch.
“How’re you—” Jason cut himself off and shook his head. “What’re your… Who…” he struggled to find a question that encapsulated everything while not giving too much away about himself.
Y/n took a step closer, almost as if he was a wild animal that she didn’t want to startle. It didn’t work; Jason stumbled back over his feet and back into the bedroom. Y/n didn’t follow. “I was at Arkham Asylum three days ago and found you.”
“What were you doing there?” Jason demanded, his words slurred.
“My car broke down,” Y/n explained easily, though Jason didn’t believe her one bit. “I was looking for help and… found you instead. I had to call a friend for help.”
Jason was done with pleasantries. Alfred had frowned upon swearing, and the boy had quickly learned not to use the words he had heard on the street or the insults villains spat at Batman once they were in handcuffs. But he wasn’t standing next to Batman in bright spandex anymore. He was bleeding through someone else’s clothes and he wasn’t in his own body and there was a girl who was wearing a dark green sweatshirt and green reminded him of the Joker. “Bullshit,” he growled out. His voice didn’t have that prepubescent squeak to it anymore and his veined hand reached up to massage his throat.
Y/n’s brows stitched together and she stared up at him, slipping the cuffs of her sweater over her hands. “No. It’s not bullshit. I promise,” she said, her voice saccharine. “Look, you’ve been sleeping for almost three days, trying to sleep off that poison the Joker put in you, I’m sure.”
Jason flinched back so hard that he stepped back onto the glass shards from the mirror. It cut into his heel and he winced, blood already leaking from the wound.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Y/n exclaimed, crouching down and then standing back up quickly. “I’m sorry. Do you want me to help you with that? Why don’t you sit on the bed and I’ll grab some bandaids.” Y/n hurried away out of the bedroom and Jason stood still.
Help.
Help you.
“You’re gonna help me win back Batman, Robby,” the Joker whispered in his ear, spit flicking on his face. “You are vital. You will be his downfall.”
Help.
Help me.
Y/n came back, shaking Jason out of the parallels. “You’re not on the bed,” she commented. Jason’s feet automatically moved towards the bed — he knew better than to argue with the Joker, but then he remembered he wasn’t with the Joker. This was a girl who looked like one strong look would have her cowering beneath him, especially if he actually had the physique he saw in the now-broken mirror.
“Who are you,” he repeated his question from earlier, turning back to look at her.
“Y/n,” the girl reiterated, head tilting slightly.
“No.” Jason shook his head. “Who are you. Who do you work for?”
Y/n’s brows scrunched together in confusion and she said, “well, my boss is named Marlene, if that’s what you’re asking. But I don’t see how that’s particularly relevant.”
Jason’s chest rose and fell and he brought his hand up to claw at it. “Liar,” he hissed out. “You… you liar!” A yell curled its way up through him and his nails scratched at his throat, trying to tear this unfamiliar voice from him. Who was he? This wasn’t Jason Todd, the broken boy from Crime Alley. This was someone much more dangerous and unpredictable. Batman had always taught Jason how to analyse plans and choose the one with the highest success rate. But this was a different Jason. This Jason was a tornado, sweeping through every emotion he didn’t know how to handle.
He saw green. And that only reminded him of the years spent under the Asylum.
Jason tore the sheets from the bed. He shoved things off the bedside table and consequently the lamp fell, its bulb shattering and then flickering out. The room was plunged into darkness. The only source of light was from the barely rising sun, peeking its rays into the window and bathing the edges of the room with pink and orange and yellow.
The light danced across Y/n’s face as she stared around at the damage Jason was inflicting. Pity and guilt ran rampant on her face and she didn’t stop him.
Jason moved throughout the room, the only things he spared being the dresser and the bookshelf.
After some time, he collapsed onto the floor, heaving in breaths. It wasn't long before he slowly leaned back to lay down. Y/n carefully sat down next to him, staying a good couple feet away. "I know you don't trust me," she said. She slipped her sleeve down her wrist, tucking in her hands. The outline of a watch pressed against the fabric and Jason stared at it numbly and unthinking. "But my name is Y/n. I work at the Gotham Gazette. My boss's name is Marlene. She's pretty nice and I'm up for a raise soon. I've lived in Gotham my whole life, even while my brother moved away the first chance he got. I've contemplated leaving for a long time, but I could never bring myself to do it." She pointed to a picture that sat on her dresser – one of the only things Jason hadn't destroyed. "That's him. My brother."
Jason didn't move his head to look. His green vision began to fade.
“When I was growing up I had a fish. His name was Captain Sparkles,” Y/n kept on talking. “He was pretty cool and lived a long time for a fish. Two years, if you’re interested. I’m going to Gotham University and studying English so I can hopefully move up the line of command at the Gazette. My parents are chill and are empty nesters with two dogs out in the countryside. My dad always pledged never to get a dog, but now I’m pretty sure they’re ahead of me in the will.” She chuckled and tugged at her hair.
Jason turned on his side away from her and he missed her eyes trailing after him sadly. Y/n swallowed and blinked away the sting of impending tears.
“I have a little routine going,” Y/n continues, her voice cracking slightly. “You know, wake up, go to class — I’m a sophomore — come home and do homework. When I don’t have class, I go to work.” The girl wraps her arms around her knees and tucks her chin in. “What I’m trying to get at, I guess, is that I don’t work for the Joker.”
Jason flinched and cradled his head in his hands. Everything Y/n was telling him seemed true; she didn’t seem like an agent of the Joker, but his mind screamed at him to not trust anybody. Each syllable she spoke seemed like a reminder of how normal he was supposed to be. Day in and day out, when the Joker was pushing Jason’s limits, pulling him to the brink of death, Jason had wished to be normal. To not have met Batman that fateful day. To not have accepted the Robin pedestal. To go to high school and college and live in a dorm and get drunk and then regret it the next day.
What he would give to be normal.
“I’m sorry,” Y/n muttered. “I didn't mean to say his name. I know it must be triggering.” She exhaled and was silent for a moment. “I’ll go,” she eventually whispered. “If you need anything, let me know.”
Jason heard her stand and move to the door. No! Please don’t go. I- I can’t be alone. I don’t know how to be alone. But the words didn’t come.
The door clicked shut behind Y/n. Tears made their way down Jason’s face and his body shook with the effort to keep silent.
I would rather you torture me than make me be alone, he thought. My thoughts are more dangerous than any weapon.
~~~~
For all of Jason’s life, soulmates had always been in his realm of knowledge. Like bombs. He had heard the word in the news, playing with whatever he had scavenged off the street, his mom smoking on the couch behind him, TV blaring.
But children are oblivious and it wasn’t until later in his life that he figured out what the words meant. ‘Bombs’ became synonymous with Gotham City and ‘soulmate’ became a word Jason held close to his heart.
Everyone had a soulmate and it was common for the kids on the playground to compare their numbers ticking down. Younger children, who had yet to get their timer, gazed wistfully at older kids’ watches. Rumours of someone’s timer speeding up or slowing down blistered around the jungle gym and it chilled young Jason’s blood with the thought of not getting to meet his soulmate soon enough.
But besides those insignificant bouts of worry, Jason was very proud of his soulmate. He would be running around the playground and when he heard someone bragging about how soon they would meet their soulmate, Jason would stop the game of tag and go over to compare numbers.
Not everyone was as lucky as him, however. Some kids would be teased because their timer estimated that they wouldn’t meet the love of their life until they were on the brink of death. While Jason never stood up for the victim, he would never be the one to bully them. His own mom had smashed her timer when she met Jason’s deadbeat dad, wanting to defy the universe and choose her own lover. It had only led to jail time, alcohol, and negligence. Sometimes, late at night, Jason would wonder what happened to his mom’s true soulmate. Were they still out there with a paused timer, wondering who didn’t think them good enough? Did they also think they could find answers at the bottom of a bottle or did they pick themselves up and reroute their life?
What would’ve his life been like if he had two parents who loved each other and were destined to be together?
But whenever Jason was feeling down, or he got a bad grade (which didn’t happen often), or he was beaten up in the alleyways of Gotham, or his mom smashed a bottle by his head and screamed at him, he would cast his eyes down to his soulmate timer and just remember that someone out there was for him. That someone was fated to love him. And very early on, from the moment he realised what having a soulmate actually meant, Jason decided that he would wait for however long it took and go through whatever it meant to find them.
“Whose clothes are these?” Jason whispered, his voice cracked and desolate the next time Y/n came into the room to offer him the little food he could stomach.
“My brother’s,” she answered easily, setting down the plate of toast and some other easy food. “I thought they would be a bit big on you, but then the Lazarus Pit made you ginormous, so they’re a bit tight now. Sorry.”
“Lazarus Pit?” Jason pushed himself to sit up, muscles groaning in protest.
“I don’t know how much you remember,” Y/n admitted. “But once I got you out of Arkham, I brought you to my friend Talia. She has some… powerful connections to some influential people and was able to help heal you in the Lazarus Pit. I just didn’t know how much it would alter you.”
“That explains a lot,” Jason admitted dryly, thinking of his new physique, emotions, and tinted vision when he had gotten mad.
Y/n leaned against her dresser. “I didn’t know what else to do. I’m sorry if you didn’t want me to help, but I needed to. You were going to die and I need…” she trailed off and her eyes flicked down to her wrist.
“You need what?”
“I couldn’t let someone die,” Y/n finally decided on.
Jason accepted her answer. He felt a small tug at his chest, almost as if something wasn’t right and he wanted to correct it. “What’s…” His eyes trailed to her lap where she held her hands. His jaw twitched and he shook his head. “Never mind.”
“You can ask me anything,” Y/n offered, a smile lifting the corner of her mouth. Jason’s eyes widened when he saw her smile and his heart fluttered. Jason decided that, even if he didn’t trust Y/n yet, he would do whatever it took to keep that smile on her face.
“No, I have nothing– I’m good– no–”
“Spit it out, Robby. What do you want to tell your darling Joker? What are your… worries? Your concerns? Your dear Uncle Ace?” The Joker circled around an exhausted Jason. “Trust me. You can tell me anything…” His speech was slow and intoxicating. Alluring, was the word Jason would use to describe it. It was tugging him in. Jason’s eyes slipped down into sleep just as another needle pierced its way into his skin, courtesy of the Joker.
Jason dug his nails into the palm of his hand over and over, fingers twitching over his cuticles. His face started to heat up and he swallowed roughly, blinking slowly. “I’m okay,” he mumbled out, even though Y/n didn’t ask.
“Do you need me to leave?” she offered.
Jason dragged his head back and forth, attempting to shake it. Eventually, it lolled back and banged against the wall. “Sorry, what?”
Y/n stood up on instinct. “Robin?”
The title sent lightening up Jason’s spine and his gaze snapped up to stare at her, fuming. “Don’t- don’t call me that!” he screamed out. “I’m not! Stop it!”
Dearest Robin. How Batman will miss his little protégé.
Robby…
Robby…
Robin!
“Let me go!” Jason shrieked. He wiped his hands on his shirt before reaching up and pulling at his hair. Everything felt wrong. “Why won’t you let me go?! Just give up,” he pleaded desperately. His eyes, wide and frantic, swept around the room until they settled on the shards of the mirror he had smashed.
His body was a graveyard.
It was only then that Jason truly comprehended how imperfect he was.
Scars trailed down his arms and legs and he could even see a smattering of them peeking out of the collar of his shirt. Each scar and bruise was a reminder of each thing the Joker had done to him.
Each scar is an adventure, Batman’s voice resonated in his head. An image of Batman patching up young Robin’s bloody nose flicked through Jason’s mind.
Each scar is a reminder you were never there for me, Jason thought bitterly. Each scar is a reminder that I’ll never be free of him. I’ll always be tied to the Joker. And that’s what terrifies me the most. That’s what makes me hate you, Batman.
“Okay, okay,” Y/n surrendered, holding her hands up. “I’ll leave. But I can’t let you go. It’s not safe yet.”
It was then that Jason drove his fist into the wall. Y/n made a little squeak of surprise and seemed to flinch.
She quickly left and Jason didn’t have time to feel bad before he crumpled onto the bed in exhaustion, bits of plaster now on the floor and sheets.
~~~~
Time after time again, the Joker visited him. The Clown Prince of Crime had grown bored with the relentless torture. There had been new tactics — he had to keep it interesting, of course — but even waterboarding hadn’t quelled the ache that the Joker felt after the boy had grown used to the whipping of chains against his skin, leaving the boy bruised and internally bleeding.
So it was time to pull out all the stops. The Joker strolled into the makeshift dungeon. Robin didn’t even look up at this point. “You look grim,” the Joker stated, pouting theatrically, even though his audience was a despairing one. He strolled over to the table where he kept all his instruments. “Which one, which one?” the Joker sang, running his fingers over the knives, corkscrews, ropes, and other devices to land on a pitcher of water.
Jason inhaled and exhaled slowly. The Joker poured a generous amount of water into a glass before lifting it to Jason’s lips and tilting it back. “There you go…” the Joker cooed, caressing Jason’s cheek. “Drink it all up like a good little boy.”
Jason’s chapped lips searched hungrily for the water, not caring what the Joker’s motive was. He was too thirsty to wonder.
It was only the first in a long line of drugs.
“I don’t know what to do, Talia,” a lilting, frustrated voice came from the other room, stirring Jason awake. He was sure that whenever he heard Y/n’s voice, he would snap to attention, ready to throw himself to his knees and execute whatever she commanded.
Woah. Where did that dedication come from?
Even when Jason assumed the title of Robin, there was never such blind complaisantness to what Batman ordered. He would always have some street-kid spunk in him.
So why was he feeling so utterly protective over Y/n? It had to be the fact that she saved him from the hellhole the Joker had carefully curated and manipulated. Didn’t it?
Or was it something else?
“No, I’ve been trying to do all my work online, and it’s been working, but I can only go so long before I have to go into the office or go to lectures.” Y/n listened to her friend for a long minute on the phone and Jason strained to hear them. “No, but I feel responsible – that’s the wrong word – but protective of him.” There was a pattering of feet as if Y/n was pacing. “This is kinda a big deal. There are movies and books written about this connection and yet, mine is huddled in my room, sleeping off drugs and the evidence of torture!” Her voice cracked up at the end and Jason physically stood up.
Bile rose up in his throat and Jason’s knees slammed to the ground, pain shooting up his bones and reverberating in his muscles. He cursed under his breath and pressed his head to the cool hardwood, trying to overcome his nausea.
Stars swirled in his vision and laughs echoed in his head. Jason mumbled words of encouragement to himself, but they were distorted and ugly. Like the Joker. Oh, how Jason dreaded the thought of becoming him. His forearms hit the floor and instead of the Joker’s words stabbing at his brain, it was a static frame of white noise, blocking out everything. Vision was the first thing to go, eyes squeezing out the late afternoon light. The second thing to leave Jason, as everything does, was time. Was it minutes or hours he sat on the floor before the door burst open?
Words were muted and Jason nodded when Y/n asked if she could touch him. Warm palms encased his jawline, thumbs brushing along his cheeks. “He’s not here,” Y/n whispered. “I’m here. Robi- no, tell me your name. Please.”
“Jason. My name is Jason.” Somehow, Y/n had eroded away his concern and distrust, replacing it with ease and invulnerability. He would never have thought it possible in such a short time, even without his history with the Joker.
Y/n exhaled a small laugh and a bright smile came to her face. Jason looked up at her, brain still buzzing. “What? What’s funny about that?” he managed to get out.
“Oh, no no no,” Y/n was quick to reassure him. “I didn’t mean to laugh. That was rude of me. I’m sorry.” One of her hands guided down to rest on his back, rubbing soft circles. In his anxious stupor, Jason curled up in front of her, instinctively resting his head on her lap. If he could see her face, he would’ve seen Y/n’s eyebrows shoot up with hopefulness. However, he definitely heard her intake of breath. “It’s a very nice name.”
“How- how does your boyfriend feel about me staying here?” Jason finally asked after a minute of him slowing his breathing.
“I don’t have a boyfriend,” Y/n said, sounding amused.
“But you have a soulmate timer,” Jason pointed out.
Y/n tilted her head, curiously. She didn’t think he had noticed that. One of her hands moved to Jason’s hair, gently brushing it back from his forehead. She ran her fingers through the white stripe which she had come to find very attractive. Tension left the boy’s shoulders and he tucked his head into her lap. “Everyone does,” Y/n replied. “It doesn’t mean I’ve found my soulmate yet.”
“Have you?”
“Yes…”
“Oh.”
Jason laid in her lap for a long minute and eventually asked her, “is he nice to you?”
Y/n laughed lightly, sighing a bit before saying, “he’s still getting to know me. He’s a very reserved and tentative person and we only met a little while ago. However, he’s been opening up pretty quickly and I’m very proud of him.” Her fingers tapped against Jason’s hair, curling the strands around her fingers before lightly scratching at his scalp with her nails. She noticed how his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down when she did that. Tucking that information away for later, Y/n added, “he’s gone through a lot in the past and I just want to make him feel safe.”
Deep in his bones, Jason could almost feel her sadness and dedication. He wasn’t sure what magic had given him the power to be so in tune with this girl, but he wasn’t going to let anyone take it away from him. Not even her soulmate.
Turning the conversation away from something that would surely wound him if he pried any deeper, Jason declared quietly, “I’m going to install some deadbolts and locks on your front door and windows soon.”
“Pardon?”
“It’s not safe for you to help me.” It never is for anyone. I’m a poison, infecting everyone I touch. “I want to make sure you’re safe before I leave.”
“Leave?” Y/n exclaimed, staring down at him. “No, you’re not ready to go yet.” A part of her was worried she was being selfish, wanting her soulmate as close to her as possible, but one look at the bandages she had just replaced the night before said otherwise. There was less blood than there had been days prior, but Jason was not in any condition to leave bed, much less leave the apartment.
“You can’t keep housing me forever, Y/n,” Jason muttered. “And I’ll be damned if I’m the reason you get hurt.” His head was still in her lap, but he couldn’t meet her eye. It was imperative that he play with the seams in his shirt.
Otherwise she might see him beginning to cry.
“Please leave,” he begged, voice breaking pitifully. Y/n couldn’t bring herself to argue, gently slipping out from her place underneath Jason and resting his head softly on the ground before closing the door behind her.
The nightmares were worse that night. ~~~~
True to his word, Jason ventured out into the apartment the next day like a zoo animal inspecting its new habitat. He crouched his shoulders, bowing his head in an attempt to diminish his size. He still wasn’t used to being so large and accidentally bumped into the kitchen counter and a lamp.
He was able to install the majority of the new locks and deadbolts until he slid the deadbolt of the front door closed. It whined and creaked beneath his fingers and his mind flashed back to when
Jason awoke slowly. A small groan left his lips, but he stayed still. It was a tactic he learned from Bruce – never let anyone know you were awake. He could categorise helpful information for later, such as possible escape routes, and it was quite possible that he was one movement away from death. He had to be careful.
But this wasn’t Africa. This wasn’t where Jason was desperately searching for his mother when Batman ran into the warehouse, seconds before the Joker let loose a bomb.
That’s all Jason could remember.
Blood was sticking his hair to his head and Jason clutched his side. It ached from bruised or broken ribs that pressed to his skin. However long he had been unconscious, it had been quite a while. His body was already malnourished and crying out for medical care.
Jason attempted to crawl to a standing position, but when his ankles and wrists caught against metal, restraining him, he knew something else was at play.
The whine and creak of a deadbolt unlocking caused him to turn his head towards a door he hadn’t noticed. A man in a pinstripe suit stepped through, a long crowbar in hand. Jason didn’t need the upturned red lips to know who was there.
“Oh, don’t worry, Robby,” the Joker coaxed as Jason stared up at him, pure terror gripping his veins. He had never been so close to the Joker without Bruce. Where was Bruce? Why wasn’t he here? The Joker squatted down to Jason’s level, running a gloved hand over the boy’s bloody hair. Jason flinched away, but it didn’t deter the Joker. “You and your Uncle Ace are going to have some real fun.”
“Where is he?” Jason sobbed, scared when he didn’t feel the blood on his hair. Why wasn’t he bleeding? What was the Joker’s new game?
“Where is who?” An unfamiliar voice asked despairingly.
“Bru— Batman,” Jason corrected himself in his stupor. “B-Batman.”
Y/n stuttered, “I don’t know Batman. I’m sorry.”
Jason groaned in pain before a hysterical laugh bubbled from him. He clutched his stomach, on all fours, eyes wide and clouding over with green. Must he always be connected to the Joker? If he could eradicate that damn colour, he would. His fingers ghosted over the place that the Joker threatened to brand him.
“Maybe I’ll make it permanent on our five year anniversary,” the Joker hummed, knife gently poking into Jason’s cheek. The faded scar of last month’s ‘J’ was what prompted the Joker to re-carve it into the boy. Blood dribbled down Jason’s cheek, joining his salty tears. It didn’t hurt, the wound being surface level, but just the thought of more things tied to the Joker made him gasp for air, crying softly.
“So you’ll always be reminded of who was the one to beat you. The Clown Prince of Crime!”
Y/n had barely noticed the ‘J’ until Jason dug his nail into his cheek, tracing the scar. The path was imprinted into his memory.
The skin turned red at the irritation and Y/n caught Jason’s wrist the next time he moved up to trace it again. “Stop. You’re hurting yourself.”
Jason muttered things under his breath at her, but he didn’t pull away from her hold. “He branded me,” he finally spit out. “And it’s only because you found me that he didn’t carve it into my skull,” he said sarcastically, malice in his voice. His eyes blazed a fervent green and he shook his head. “But at least I knew what was coming. At least I knew that a month had passed when he redrew his initials.”
Y/n opened her mouth to argue, but Jason spoke before she could. “I… I’m worried,” he began slowly. “I’m becoming more of the Joker than I am Batman. I was supposed to look up to Batman, but what if he and the Joker are one and the same? Both hurt me. One abandoned me and the other took that for granted.”
“He didn’t mean to abandon you, I’m sure,” Y/n whispered. “No one would ever willingly abandon you.”
Jason grumbled out, groaning at her words. His lips twitched downwards and his biceps flexed. “No one? Everyone did!” he screamed out. “My parents, Batman, Alfred, Dick! Everyone abandoned me!”
Y/n ignored the last name Jason listed off, before murmuring, “I haven’t.”
“Not yet,” Jason whispered after a moment. “But you will.”
~~~~
A couple days later, Jason peeked out of Y/n’s room, one of her blankets in hand. “You deserve your room,” Jason mumbled when Y/n looked up from her book, astonished.
“I– Jason, you need the most comfort,” Y/n said, gently closing her book. “I’m fine on the couch.”
“You need to get back to work soon,” he said, hugging the blanket close. “You said it yourself. I can’t be the reason that you’re putting your life on hold. You- you need to get back to normal.”
“You are my nor–” Y/n cut herself off before exhaling slowly. “Don’t worry about me,” she began. “I’ve slept on the couch many nights when I had papers to complete or binge-watched too many episodes of The Good Place.”
Jason’s features softened slightly and he took a step forward. Y/n took the hint and scooted over on the couch, placing her book on the small coffee table she had. “What’re you reading?” he asked as Y/n turned on the television, opening up to the first episode of The Good Place.
“The Great Gatsby, for one of my English classes,” Y/n said.
“Really?” A smile slowly grew on Jason’s lips, something he hadn’t experienced in years. His muscles ached a bit from the disuse, but Jason was now addicted to the feeling.
Y/n decided that she was now also addicted to the sight of Jason smiling. “Yeah. We’re covering the symbolism of water that spans throughout the book. In fact, in the first couple of pages, Fitzgerald references the White Star Line, which is a boat that sank on the same route as the Titanic. Gatsby, obviously, dies in the water, sinking, just as those boats did. Fitzgerald really is an excellent writer.”
Jason was pretty sure he was in love. Or maybe he still was on drugs. Whatever the feeling, it was nice and unexpected and new.
“I do think you’ll like The Good Place,” Y/n continued. “I won’t spoil anything, but it has some pretty amazing underlying themes.”
“I’m sure,” Jason replied quietly, burrowing under the blanket. It didn’t quite manage to hide his large frame, but it managed to hide his quickening heart and blush that was slowly spreading.
Just before the first episode started, Y/n quickly hurried to make some popcorn. She plunked the bowl in between the pair and then snatched some blanket away from Jason. “You run hot,” she explained when Jason shot her a bemused look.
The Good Place was a wonderful show, as Jason soon learned, but what was more wonderful was when Y/n’s cheek pressed against his shoulder and her knees curled up and her eyes fluttered closed. When her breath slowed with sleep, subconsciously trusting him enough to be at her most vulnerable, that, Jason found out, was what was truly wonderful.
Bruce Wayne had never before seen a street rat more excited to see Batman, especially when that street kid was trying to steal from him.
But what was particularly amusing was that the boy wasn’t particularly excited to see him, but more excited to show Batman his soulmate timer.
“No! No, you don’t understand!” the boy cried ecstatically. “It just fast-forwarded! Meeting you means I get to meet my soulmate sooner!” He bounced on the balls of his feet, eagerly shoving his wrist towards Batman’s cowl, showing the vigilante his timer.
“Yes, very… exciting,” Bruce hummed out, not sure whether to laugh or reprimanded him for trying to steal the Batmobile’s tires.
The boy laughed, a big grin covering his small features. “I wonder what they’re like. Have you met yours yet, Batman?”
Bruce raised his eyebrows and a chuckle slipped through. “Yes, I have. It’s a wonderful thing.”
As the child kept rambling about his soulmate, Bruce knew that he had just found the next Robin.
~~~~
Y/n sat on the kitchen counter, legs crossed. She had a textbook in her lap and was mumbling out phrases for memorisation of an upcoming exam. A small smile couldn’t help but expand on Jason’s face as he listened to her mumbles. He paused from his work in the small kitchen, back muscles rippling as he reached for the marinara sauce. When he went to dump the pasta into the strainer, the pot clanged against the metal faucet.
The Joker rattled his crowbar against Jason’s chains.
“Jay?” Y/n said softly, guiding him out of his memories before he could get too lost. “You can stop straining the pasta. All the water’s gone.”
“What?” he choked out, turning his head so he could see her.
“The pasta.” Y/n shifted forward so her legs hung over the edge of the counter. “It’s okay. It’s been okay and it will continue to be okay. You- you can let go.” The euphemism wasn’t lost on Jason.
He let the pasta pan drop in the sink and faced Y/n, eyes shining with unshed tears. “No. That’s not what I meant.” Swallowing down the feeling, Jason continued, “what did you call me?”
“Jay,” Y/n whispered.
The Joker paced around Jason after a few days without any torture. “It’s been too long, Robin,” he said, shaking his head. “I think it’s time to make you sing for your Uncle Jay.”
“Is that okay?” Y/n asked softly.
Bruce shouted from the other room, “Jay! Come on! The gala’s starting soon.”
“Jason,” Y/n repeated. She reached out and touched his shoulder and the boy came to stand between her legs. Jason dropped his head on her shoulder, beginning to sob quietly. Immediately, Y/n brought her hand up to rest on his head and the other arm to curl around his back. “Don’t you dare,” she shook her head as Jason began mumbling his apologies. “It’s okay. I’m here.”
And suddenly, everything was okay. Because Y/n was there. “Bruce called me Jay,” he murmured out. “An- and then he called himself Mr. Jay.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to trigger-“
“No, it’s okay,” Jason looked at her, eyes shining with tears. “I like it when you do it. When you call me that.”
“You do?” Y/n asked, hands on either side of his face, cupping them closer and when her hands trailed to hold his neck and then one brushed back his hair oh this must be heaven, Jason thought, eyes fluttering shut. What he would give to live within her arms, always feeling safe and always feeling loved. She had that strange power over him and while Jason usually didn’t like people having power over him, he decided that when it came to Y/n, he didn’t mind. Not at all.
“Yeah,” he whispered, his voice lilting up with an infliction of infectious love.
Jason stood there, comfortable in her arms and secretly hoping that Y/n would never have to go to work and would always just stay here. Where he could just keep… holding her and touching her and making sure she was safe because if Y/n wasn’t safe, Jason was pretty sure he would go on a rampage. If Y/n wasn’t safe, if Jason wasn’t holding her, then it was only because the Joker had found him and ripped him away from the only thing he had ever loved.
And that would’ve been the cruellest method of torture.
No amount of chains would hold him back. No amount of drugs would make him forget Y/n. And no amount of hate would make him forget the amount of love he felt when Y/n held him close and he could hear her heart beating steadily. In that moment, Jason could pretend her heart beat for him.
He knew his heart beat for her. Then his mind flashed back to it all.
The boy’s muscles tensed, protesting against the Joker for the first time in weeks. He had been trying to keep the watch hidden for as long as possible, but he should’ve known it was futile.
Jason’s cracked lips parted and he forced a “no” from his parched throat. “Don’t.”
“Stop it.” Jason wiggled away from the Joker’s searing grip but nothing helped.
Jason let out a guttural scream as the Joker ground the glass into the dirt with his heel.
“Oh, picky picky picky,” the Joker teased. “Sensitive, are we?”
“Lemme go! Don’t touch her! Don’t you dare!” His voice cracked and blood began to trickle down his arms as the chains rubbed against his irritated skin and broke the surface. But he would take the pain a thousand times over if it meant he could get to his watch.
His soulmate. His love. It was all gone.
“Yes!” the Joker cried out, exclaiming loudly. His hands began to shake and a large grin spread on his maniacal face. “Yes! Emotion, Robby! This is what I want! Give me the fucking emotion! If I had known, I would’ve smashed that watch a long time ago.”
Jason lunges towards the Joker, face contorted with rage. “Don’t you fucking dare! Get- stay- no! No!”
It was the most he had ever fought against the Joker. And the Joker adored it.
“You… you’re my…” Jason choked out, jaw tensing slightly as the dots began to connect.
He didn’t know when Y/n had begun to cry, but as tears streamed down her face and she nodded desperately, things seemed to all click into place. “It took you long enough,” she joked pathetically.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Jason breathed out, his hands tightening on her thigh, a protective instinct washing over him. “Oh, no, no, no,” he shook his head and brought her head in his hands, brushing away the tears. “I didn’t mean- I’m sorry…”
“No, it’s not that,” Y/n’s voice cracked. “I’m not unhappy, not in the slightest—” Jason was so sure of their bond that it hadn’t even crossed his mind that she might reject him or not love him due to his past. “—but I just never thought that you would- that I would-” She hiccuped and Jason’s eyes darted across her face, wanting to somehow help, but so unsure of himself.
Slowly, Jason sank to his knees. Y/n still sat above him, on the counter, staring down, baffled. Her eyes were red from crying and her lips were parted, but she had never seemed more beautiful. “What- what are you doing?” she murmured.
“I’m showing you how much you affect me,” he answered simply. “Quite literally, you saved my life, Y/n. And if that’s the only way you touched my life, I would consider myself the luckiest man on Earth. If no one has told you those words before, then everyone else is a fool. If you allow me to stay around and cherish the best thing that’s ever happened to me, gladly, I will.” Y/n slowly slipped off the counter, standing before him. “But that’s a lot of ‘ifs’. And I’m not willing to potentially lose you over some ‘ifs’. I know I’ve made you uncertain and I’ve wrecked your apartment and I’m so sorry,” he chuckled dryly. Jason’s hands were shaking as he slowly slid them up Y/n’s legs. She shivered under his touch, backing up until she hit the counter behind her. Jason lifted his hands from her, giving her a moment if she needed, but one look in her eyes led his hands right back to her body. “You’re like a drug,” he whispered, pressing his face to the side of her thigh.
“Drugs are very very bad,” Y/n managed to get out.
“I know.” A small smirk appeared on his lips. His lips suddenly looked very kissable. “The Joker taught me that. If I could go back and kill him, I’d do it in an instant, but… I’d also thank him. And I’d thank Batman. And Nightwing. And my mom. And everyone else in my life because they all led me to you.” Y/n’s knees buckled and Jason helped ease her down so she was sitting in front of him. He choked on his tears slightly before saying, “so many people believe in equality in the universe. So if all of that is true, then perhaps every bad thing that ever happened to me was just leading up to you. You… are so good that the universe needed to even it all out.”
Y/n began shaking her head vehemently. “Then let me damn the universe,” she whispered. “Because clearly, it’s been unfair. You were gifted to me, Jason. It’s not fair that you went through so much shit while I lived a fairly light life.”
“Maybe I’m not good enough…”
“Don’t you dare suggest that,” Y/n cut him off sharply.
“Then perhaps I took the hardship you were supposed to endure,” Jason offered the explanation. Before Y/n could argue, Jason said, “and I’d do it again.”
Y/n laughed lightly, drying her eyes with the heel of her palm. “I don’t want you to go through that again.”
“Then it’s a good thing I don’t need to,” Jason muttered, leaning forward slightly to nuzzle into Y/n’s neck. He slowly, as if testing the water, pressed a kiss to her skin. Feeling her inhale, Jason grinned and repeated the gesture, wondering if he would get the same reaction. He did. After a moment, he exhaled, his breath tickling Y/n. “I’m going to need time,” he muttered. “I’m not going to be the perfect soulmate you deserve right away.”
“I don’t expect you to be. You’re already perfect to me.”
“I’ll work on it,” Jason compromised. “I want to deserve you.”
“You do–”
“Y/n,” he pleaded desperately. “Let me do this for you. Let me be the best Jason Todd for you.”
Seeing that he wasn’t going to back down, Y/n nodded after a minute. “Okay,” she said. “We’ll get through it all together.”
“Maybe we should seal the deal with a kiss.”
A bubbling laugh filled Jason’s ears and he couldn’t help the large grin that came over him. “Hmm,” Y/n conceded. “Alright.”
And so they did.
“Mom, why’re we here?” A small hand gripped onto her mother’s.
“I signed us up for a soup kitchen,” her mom explained. “It’s coming to the holidays and we should be doing something good for others. Gotham isn’t always the nicest place to live and we’re fortunate enough that we can help when needed.”
“Hmm,” the girl conceded. “Alright.” She puzzled a bit over the thought that some people weren’t as fortunate as they were, before asking slowly, “do we need to help them any more than usual?”
“What do you mean, Y/n?” the mom asked, checking the street names as they passed. The girl frowned, her hair in small pigtails. “Well… Should we have brought clothes? Or blankets? How… How much do they need help?” She struggled to find the right words.
“No, they’re not homeless,” her mom said. “They just need a bit of help bringing food into the family, you know?”
“Okay,” Y/n accepted the answer easily.
“Just, hold my hand, will you?” the mom said, even though her daughter was already clutching her hand. “This isn’t the safest part of town, though nothing bad will happen. The sun is out, so there’s nothing to be worried about.”
Out of nowhere, a small boy barrelled out of an alleyway, shouting at some other boys that were running behind him. He crashed into Y/n, who’s mom scooped her up on instinct. “Oh, I’m sorry!” the boy cried out, head whipping from the two females back to the people chasing him. The boys behind him carefully came to a slow once they saw an adult with her daughter. “Uh, where are you two ladies going?” The boy asked, eyes darting back and forth between the groups. Ultimately, he decided that a stranger was more safe than those kids, simply because she was a mom.
“To the food kitchen,” Y/n supplied before her mom could shush her.
“I can show you the way!” The boy jumped at the opportunity, beginning to walk backwards away from the group of bigger boys. Y/n’s mom looked between the malnourished boy who was silently begging with his eyes to the group who had a smearing of blood on their knuckles.
“Okay…” she decided. “Show us the way.”
The young boy jumped up and began striding away, beaming with the safety of an adult. Y/n’s mom set her down carefully, gripping her hand tighter than before. “Stay close by,” she demanded. Y/n nodded.
The boy had dark hair that was cropped slightly at the sides with a tuft of it that fell over his eyes. His eyes were blue and he wore a red hoodie that fell just a bit too long over his jeans. “Wow,” he chirped as the trio got farther away from the alleyway. “Thanks. Let’s just say I’m not exactly on those guy’s good sides.” He kept rambling, Y/n’s mom shooting him cautious looks every once in a while, but he didn’t seem to notice. “What’s your name?” he asked Y/n, skipping over to walk by her side.
“Y/n,” the girl replied. “Y/n L/n.”
“That’s a nice name,” the boy grinned. “How old are you?”
“I’m five.”
“I’m seven!” The boy placed a haughty hand to his chest. “But my birthday’s tomorrow.”
Y/n’s mom hummed. “Oh. Are you excited to get your soulmate timer?”
“Yeah!” The boy beamed up at the woman, turning a corner. “Super excited. But this is the soup kitchen. You know, my mom should be stopping by soon. But thanks!” He began jogging off, waving goodbye.
“Wait! What’s your name?” Y/n called after him.
“Jason! Jason Todd.”
Paring(s): Damian wayne x enemy! Reader
Warning(s): swearing, murder, mention of killing people, pissed off damian
Genre: angst
Summary: Y/N worked with deathstroke and was responsible for murdering damian's whole family.
You worked with deathstroke ever since you were born. He was pretty much the only 'family' you have ever know. He trained you to become and weapon, told you who to kill and you were your enemies.
You were there when he murdered Ra's Al Ghul infront of his grandson, Damian Al Ghul Wayne. The son of the infamous Bruce wayne A.KA. Batman and Taila Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul.
You were also responsible for the deaths of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd (again 💀), Tim Drake, Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth. And having murder his family, Damian felt a hatred for you and proceeded to chase you down.
But he only failed in doing so. He had attempted to corner you while you were training, but little did he know you had some tricks up your sleeve.
Damian was now surrounded and held at gun point by your men, loyal to you and only you. You watched as Damian glared draggers at you, while your smirk just grew wider and more vicious.
"Sorry about your family, all those muscles... didn't help much... did they?" You snicked as his eyes filled with rage.
"I'll fucking kill you!" He yelled, ignoring the guns pointing at his head.
He attempted to run at you but was only tackled by your men, held down to the ground. He growled at your men as they held him down, digging right into his back. You just smirked as you walked over to him before squatting down, getting right in his face.
"You'll be fun to play with.... just like you're family was" you whispered into his ear,watching with glee as he threated you in anger.
Request: I'm already back for more. As l've already told you I love your interpretation of a reader with dwarfism and since you are okay with me requesting more, can I get multiple headcanons of Gotham!Rogues x Dwarf!reader with just either simply day to day headcanons or their first reaction to meeting/seeing them? Rogues including jervis(obv Imao), Jerome, Oswald, Victor fries, Zsasz, and ra's al ghul!
The plot can be the reader being similar to the Cheshire Cat or Nightcrawler when it comes to teleportation powers. They're friends with Barbara, Selina, and Tabitha. The rogues always see photos on them on the news, newspapers, and sometimes in person but if they even get caught staring, reader teleports themself and whoever they're with away, so they don't really get a chance to talk or know them.
Like last time, only write this if you're okay with it and I'll understand if you can't or just don't want too!
Thank you tons again! - anon
♫ “Across the room, your eyes are glowin' in the dark." Voulez-Vous by ABBA
Oh, the man is completely enthralled with you. How could he not be? You're the missing piece to his wonderland puzzle.
Similarly to Alice, he believes your powers go hand and hand with each other. He rules the mind, while you have complete control of your body. His first thought when he see's you in the newspaper is simple.
He must have you.
He will do anything it takes to track you down. He finds himself becoming more and more entranced with the prospect of you working with him, partners in crime, connected body and soul. Of course those feelings of admiration become obsession.
Before you know it, the man is going lengths to find you; just like how he was with Alice. Hiring Jim Gordon as a bounty hunter? Mayhaps...
When he finally finds you at the siren's club, he can't help but be in awe. You're so small, so fragile, so unique. He wants to kiss your flattened cheekbones that look like pure porcelain. Your his doll.
"My dear, Y/N!" He's calling when he finds you, his teeth spread into a wide grin. He finds your eyes quickly turning to meet his gaze, glowing underneath the club's light. His shadow towers over you.
"You look ravishing, I must admi-" He goes to speak, just before you disappear from thin air. His mouth is open for a few moments, eyebrows scrunched.
Where did his precious little Cheshire Cat go?
Oh yeah, he's pouting. He's never been a fan of the disappearing act. But he doesn't mind. He's determined. He's played this game with Alice for far too long, he will not take no for an answer.
You'll find notes, gifts, flowers, dresses tailored to your sizing. All perfectly crafted from Gotham's most professional hypnotized seamstresses or florists.
Barbara is smirking when she finds the gifts, cackling about how sweet small little Y/N has a loony admirer. Tabitha's less than pleased, throwing out any bouquet she finds before you see them. Selina agrees, the guy's a freak.
It's up to you if you want to give him a chance <3 He would be the most devoted lover and partner if you decided too...if not a bit overly infatuated.
♫ “Nothing promised, no regrets." Voulez-Vous by ABBA
Uh oh! Murderous clown on the loose, and he's also 100% fixated, just like a certain hatter.
Jerome brushes you off at first, don't get him wrong, he adores your work on the city. Nothing he loves more than seeing some horribles destroy Gotham! He's a fan, if you could call him that.
It takes him some time to warm up to the idea of being whipped. But once he is, you have him wrapped around your pretty little finger.
Similar to Jervis- he can't help himself. You're powerful. You're strange. You're a freak just like him and the rest of these bad boys in Gotham! You remind him of the circus, all different shapes and sizes of people around him. You belong with him. By his side. On his side. Maybe sitting in his lap... What?
Yeah, he's not sure where that came from either. But hey, he's not complaining! He likes to think he's a bachelor, a young beau waiting for his turn in the love game! Before he knows it, he's slicking his hair back, putting on his finest and most colorful suits, and making sure his face is stapled all the way. Then he's getting his cult to crash the Siren's club. Moment of silence for Tabitha who will have to clean it up after.
The place is a shit show, people in makeup dancing wildly and giggling manically. Tabitha, Barbra, Selina and you get tied up in the confusion. It's hard to fight back against a bunch of crazies when your expensive alcohol is being thrown at walls, and you four are simultaneously tied up together in one big rope. Barbra's throwing a bit of a hissy fit.
Everyone is quiet when Jerome enters, dressed to the nines, with a loud and boisterous,
"Hey gorgeous! I'm sure you've heard of me," He speaks, bending down to your level, invading your personal space. He goes to continue, until the four of you evaporate before him. Teleported away. He's left staring at the loose ropes, smile unchanged- but eyes widened in surprise.
Oh. Okay. So that's how it's gonna be. Alright.
Jerome loves a game of cat and mouse.
He craves attention. He loves the center stage, and he will not be ignored. No no no no.
He will not leave your club alone until you confront him. Yeah, sorry Babs and Tabs. Barbara will start urging you to just "sleep with the damn clown!" while Tabitha is trying desperately to not have you anywhere near that creep.
But the club isn't all he'll do, doll! No, he'll get his cult to do more and more mass murders and sprees across the city, each one broadcasted on live television. Each time, he looks into the camera, blood on his face, professing his undying love.
"This is for you, Y/N!" He's showcasing the violence around, "Call me!" He gestures, ending the broadcast abruptly.
Well, kind of hard to ignore a man when your club is in shambles, Barbara is going batshit insane, AND you have Jim Gordon trying to find you; just in order to stop these massacres around the city in your honor.
Once again, you should give the man a chance! He doesn't think he'd make a horrible boyfriend, y'know, if you're into gingers.
♫ “Take it now or leave it." Voulez-Vous by ABBA
Ozzie's a bit harder to gauge, because I don't think he'd become infatuated with someone unless he got to meet them first. So for arguments sake, we are just going to say you two have meet previously on many occasions! Specifically when he's had some bad blood with Barbara and Tabitha.
At first, he detests you. He thinks you're a nuisance, and a powerful tool for the Siren's. You can escape from ANYONES grasp, and take them with you. His nose is scrunching up every time he thinks of just how he can get rid of you.
Well, if he can't get rid of you, he's well versed in manipulation. Perhaps he can convince you to join his team.
You're going about your day at the club, tending bar on a step stool, the usual. Oswald comes in, Victor trailing behind him. Tabitha and Barbara are instantly on alert.
"Hello." Oswald fixes his suit jacket, rolling his cane in his fingertips. He wears a faux smile, and Tabitha huffs.
"What can we help you with, Ozzie?" Barbara is smiling, just as fake as his. It's a weird Gotham crime boss stand-off.
"I was wondering if you, my dear," He speaks, suddenly nodding down to you, "Would like to accompany me for lunch tomorrow."
Yeah, everyone's jaws drop, including Oswald's at the silence. Oswald didn't necessarily intend for it to sound like he was trying to ask you on a date. He's flushing red under everyone's gaze, suddenly fidgeting. If you look closely, Victor's giving a lazy amused smirk in the back.
"Like hell-" Tabitha's about to answer for you, before you squint at the man.
"Sure." You scan him up and down, hesitantly. Before anyone has a chance to speak, Oswald's turning on his heel.
"Wonderful! 2:00 sharp. Don't be late." He's smiling, knowing he's got a one-up on the Siren's.
...Well, leave it Oz to have things never work out quite his way. One lunch turns into two, and two turns into three. He's forcing himself to remember why he's doing this; you are just a tool. This is all a charade!
Hard to focus though, when you two seem to enjoy one another's company. Like when you show him what it feels like to teleport, (He's closing his eyes in fear, only for it to feel like nothing.) Or when you two have a strangely intimate discussion about what it was like growing up not very normal.
He's opening up about his schoolyard bullies, about his mother. About the feeling of being taunted, teased for his nose or height. You tell him, you know the feeling.
He stares at you, eyes focused solely on you. He's enamored.
He turns viciously protective over you. Any snide comment made towards you by a henchman of his, or a frequent at the Siren's club, they are brutally stabbed to death, a bit impulsively, with a bottle shard.
When he realizes he's falling in love with you, similar to Jervis, he likes doing grand gestures to get your attention. If there's anything you desire, you'll get it. Which is why when he finds out you're avoiding him, he becomes sour.
What? Why are you leaving him? He doesn't understand. The intimacies you two have shared, did they mean nothing to you? He's hurt, he's angry, he's aggressive. He's more irritable than usual; and judging from the fact he's irritable ALL the time, it's pretty bad. If you don't explain yourself, this sadness will probably turn into anger. He already believes you two have some weird pseudo-romantic relationship, so he's taking this like a break-up. He's a vengeful ex.
Whenever he stops by the Siren's club, and sees you teleport away at the sight of him, it stings. It all comes to a head when he's breaking down in his mansion. You will have to be the one to confront him, because he'll be too busy sulking. He loves you. He doesn't want to make you uncomfortable. If you don't want to talk to him, he won't force you, even if he's going crazy trying to figure out why.
When he sees you, he's standing up in a hurry, fumbling over his words, sniffling. His blue-green eyes are puffy, and you'll have to sigh and talk to him.
Please, tell him why your avoiding him. Explain if you're insecure, if you're scared of loving. He'll be thankful for the explanation. He'll be angry on your behalf for anyone who made you believe you were unloved, whether for your dwarfism or your powers. He's promising to kill for you, tear down the city to avenge you.
"Okay, Oz, I'm not dead yet."
"Yet?!"
♫ “Now is all we get." Voulez-Vous by ABBA
Forgive him, he’s trying his hardest not to care, and failing miserably.
Similarly to Ozzie, I can’t see him becoming infatuated or obsessed like Jerome and Jervis so quickly, not since what happened with Nora. So, I’m imagining you’ve also met him once or twice; using your powers for the sirens, just like he and firefly have done some hitjobs for you four in the past.
He’s in love with the idea of having a family; of being accepted, of leaving this life behind. It’s made him bitter, cold; but the man will do anything for love. Anything.
And it’s hard not to notice the small woman running around on her toes in the club, parts of her body vanishing here and there. You’re gorgeous to him. Those small cheshire-like smiles you send him when he’s supposed to be working. They break his hard exterior. He doesn’t know if he loves or hates it. He loves it.
Even a small pit of jealousy fills him, whenever he sees you in the news. Or when he watches silently on the sidelines, while you talk with Barbara and Tabitha and Selina. You do it so effortlessly. How could anyone not be entranced by you?
He thinks that he’s a freak. Firefly’s a freak. Just like Jerome and Oz, he definitely finds solace in the idea you are just like him. You’re one of them; a freak. Pushed out by Gotham’s careless inhabitants, forced into this life. He remembers being driven out of town by Penguins army. He wonders if you’ve expirenced the same treatment at one point in your life. He wants to show you, he’s here for you. He loves you, every part of you. No matter how unconvential or mistreated. He just wants to take care of you.
Just like Oz, he’ll be ready to kill anyone for you. Freeze em’ to death in one single sweep. Just give him the go ahead.
Victor is terrified of hurting you, as well. Not only your tiny stature, but he’s sure he’d get ice burns from his fingertips. He imagines a life where it’s just the two of you, without the cold, back when he was just himself. He dreams of cooking for you. Owning an apartment. Even having a family. He swears, he’d be gentle. But he’s too uncertain. He isn’t good enough, and he certainly isn’t good for you.
You’ll have to be the first person to talk to him, warm up to him. He might not state it directly, other than a nonchalant nod here and there, but it makes him feel special. It’s the little interactions you two have that make him fall helmet over heels.
You two will spend hours, at the club, watching from the sidelines. Barbara and Tabitha out on business, Selina doing…Selina things. You’ll poke fun at the passerby’s to get a reaction out of him.
“Oh god, I just saw that guy kissing that girl- what’s he doing with that other chick?…Oh- they are making out. Oh, okay, he’s taking him to the back. I’ll give you $20 if Barbara kills this guy for doing it on her desk.” You’re snickering, gossiping. Every now and then you look over at him to see him already staring at you, the hint of a smile on his lips. It’s all you’ll get for now…until he responds.
“…Guess you’ll owe me $20 then.” He’s firing back, voice low. It’s the first time he’s spoken. The first time you’ve seen him do something other than brooding. It’s sweet.
These little things will become routine, and he’ll find solace in them. Eventually you’ll even play some tricks with your teleportation on the clubs costomers, scaring them, bumping into them. All the while you’re watching him in the corner, smiling, exhaling through his nose. He playfully scolds you sometimes, other times he chuckles. Either way, it’s a sight to see.
God, please don’t dissapear on this man. I don’t think he could take it. Gotham be damned, if you ever find yourself scared of him, he’d be broken. He’d think it was his fault, he’d think he lost his second chance at love. If you ran away from him, he might just up and leave Gotham.
But even if you did try to avoid him for awhile, I think he’d let you go without a fight. He’d just be more sulky than usual, more prone to picking petty fights with Firefly. You might find the room uncomfortably cold, even when he’s not occupying it. (He froze the AC to the club, he was upset. Sorry Barbara.)
I think he’s the only one on this list of characters that Barbara, Tabitha, and Selina might all actively approve of. Barbara wouldn’t mind having a henchman dating her bestie; soldifies his loyalty to them. Also, he’s good eye-candy. Tabitha doesn’t have any personal issue with the man, other than previously working with Penguin, of course. Selina will still make fun of him for being a walking freezer, but hey, what can you do. You have their blessing.
If you caught him before he decided to up and leave, explain to him why you run away, why you’ve been avoiding him. He won’t just understand, he’ll practically worship you. He’ll explain himself too, why he’s terrified of touching you. It’s not because of your dwarfism, or your powers. It’s just how he’s afraid of hurting or loosing you. Loving people is hard.
If he could cry, he would. But his tears will freeze when they touch his cheek. You’ll have to show him you aren’t fragile. He’ll believe you.
You guys can heal eachother.
♫ “The girl means business, so I'll offer her a drink." Voulez-Vous by ABBA
THIS Victor, on the other hand, is much more brash in his approaches to courting you.
He’s heard about you on the radio, from his boss, seen you in the newspapers, on the tv, watched you from the window in your apartment.
…What? Who said that?
He studies your every move. The man is calculated in his methods, what can he say? He’s not obsessed! (loud incorrect buzzer)
He just wants to size you up a little, see who the newest danger is in Gotham. He’ll convince himself he’s doing it for his boss, whether it be Falcone or Penguin. But it definitely goes deeper.
Unlike the other villians on this list that see your dwarfism as something to empathize with, Victor doesn’t really pay it any mind. He’s been around the block a few times- he’s been with women of all ages, heights, race, etc. The man really doesn’t have a type. What he’s attracted to is strength, independence, someone who will laugh at his dry humor with him. He’s stalked you at the club. He sees the way you banter with Tabitha and Selina, the way you make Barbara dissapear when she’s being too annoying with a flick of your wrist.
He’s incredibly attracted to a woman whose witty and good at what they do. Just like him.
Victor’s more subtle in his approach. He’ll make it casual.
So when you’re at the bar in the club, sitting around, watching the passerby’s, he’ll make his move.
“Now, what’s a girl like you doing here, alone?” He sneaks up behind you, giving you a start. You flush red at the man in front of you. Victor Zsasz. The words are spoken as he drums his fingers on the bar, cocking his head at your short frame. He towers over you, caging you in.
When you don’t speak, it doesn’t phase him. You’re about to teleport away in an instant, until he drawls your attention back to him with a lazy smile.
“So…” He whistles. “What’s your drink of choice? Wait- Let me guess.” The man doesn’t stop talking, listing off drinks that are most definitely not your drink of choice.
He watches you all the time. He knows exactly what your favorite drink is. But he wants you to stay.
It’s a bit awkward, a bit intimidating, and strangely charming. He speaks with an inflection that borders on sarcasm and curiosity. It’s intriguing, coming from Gotham’s most dangerous hitman.
“Can I ask-“ You squeak, now nursing a drink he ordered for you. It’s a Vodka Cran, and it could be worse. “…Is there a hit on me?”
He stares at you expressionless for uncomfortably long, before it forms into something quizzical.
“…Nah,” His voice is slow. He clicks his tongue. “Just an admirer.”
There’s an awkward scilence. He shrugs.
“Y’know. I’m a big fan of this place. Like the ambience.” He sips his own drink, you don’t know what it is. Just as his words sound out, you swear you can overhear a gunshot in the distance, probably from Barbara’s meeting with some other underground boss. Somehow, the sentiment makes you laugh.
He perks up at the sound.
You aren’t used to this. Someone being so casual about you, your powers, your small stature. He’s a bit flirty from time to time, but between the alcohol and his quips, you don’t seem to mind. He seems oddly genuine in his demeanor with every compliment or joke that slips.
You two keep the banter going for the rest of the night. Mostly chatting about how tiring your respective bosses can be. He does a poor drunken impression of Penguin, and you do one of Barbara. It’s a relaxing night in comparison to what you usually expirence living in Gotham.
You think you only see him every so often. Coming by the club whenever Penguin comes, or when a job is sent out, and his target is there. He’ll always send you a wink when he leaves, blood on his face.
But he sees you every day.
Yeah, the stalking only worsens. If you find your phone in different places throughout the day, or your window reopened, he’s the reason why.
He’s fine like this. In his head, the two of you are going steady. He’s pretty committed. You’re his girl, and that’s that.
Until you start avoiding him like the plague.
Zsasz WILL find a way to confront you. He doesn’t care if you teleport away each and everytime. He’ll find a way to get the message clear, through other means.
If you find a “talk to me.” with a smiley face, written with some poor saps blood, on your mirror, I apologize. He’s gotta get the message sent somehow.
Yeah, he won’t give up. He’ll go great lengths to get you two back together. He’s also listening to disco break-up ballads to cope. He’s getting the zsaszettes to stalk you when he can’t. If you still won’t budge, yeah, Tabitha might end up with a gun pointed at her head until you talk to him.
He’s not necessarily angry, but chasing after you is certainly taking a toll on him. Give the guy some credit.
Tabitha, still with a gun pointed at her, will be barking at you to not talk to him. He’s a creep, he’s an asshole, and you shouldn’t compromise your honor! (His eye will twitch at her words, trigger finger itching.)
Up to you what you decide to do! Explain the situation, talk to him, make things official, or…bye bye Tabitha. And that still won’t stop him. He doesn’t take rejection very seriously.
When you tell him exactly why you teleport yourself away, he’s the only one on this list who might think it’s stupid. He’ll understand, don’t get me wrong, but this is Gotham! Why would you be insecure? He garuntees you he’s met at least ten other people with far worse skeletons in their closet. You’ll have to teach him that’s not the issue.
Yeah, our little sociopath has a hard time with feelings. But I think you two would maybe be good for eachother! Teach him to listen more, whip him up into shape, and reap the benefits of having Gotham’s number one hitman as your personal bodyguard and lover. He’ll take you to stakeouts, make fun of Jim Gordon, crash your place. You two can watch Netflix under the blankets. He loves your size- cuddling into you like his own personal pillow.
Tabitha’s very dissapointed.
♫ “I'm really glad you came, you know the stars, you know the game.” Voulez-Vous by ABBA
May god have mercy on your soul, reader. Ra’s is a sight to behold when he’s in love.
He heard whispers of your name all around Gotham. He sees you on the news when he’s absentmindedly listening. A girl who can teleport herself and others, to any location? Even the power to control which body parts you maneuver. Extrodinary.
He’s immeadiatley infatuated with your power. He wants to covet you. Possess you. Have you close to him. He needs to see your power for himself.
He’s similarly calculated in his response to tracking you down. He will appear at the club, slinking into the shadows, whispering a quaint,
“Hello.”
It makes you jump, and as if on instinct, you teleport yourself away. He marvels at the way in which you do so right infront of his eyes. How rare it is, for him to be so easily confounded.
He must see you again.
You’ll feel his presence every now and then. Maybe even catch a glimpse of him watching you. You’ll turn back, eyes squinted, only to find he’s not there anymore. It confuses you just the same.
Though, you eventually get used to him watching. It turns into a little game between the two of you. If he can catch you, if you can catch him. It’s strangely endearing.
He’s also becoming increasingly more attentive to your daily habits. He memorizes your schedule. He sends members of the League of Shadows to observe you, to take notes on how you use your powers.
If any member insults you, or pokes fun at your dwarfism, Ra’s will spare them no mercy. Yeah…he’s making it a big deal. He’s ruthlessly insulting them for their ignorance, before killing them without a second thought. In a way, you belong to Ra’s already. He will not stand for disrespect among his order.
Ra’s is a gentleman. Just like Ozzie and Jervis, you’ll find gifts littered around your apartment. Little notes from him, written in the most exquisite cursive, expressing his admiration of you. Beautiful, rare, and expensive jewelry, tailored to the size of your wrists and neck.
You’ll see him exiting Barbara’s office sometimes, when he needs her for the demons head. He’ll send you a smile, half-way gentle, half-way playful. He’s unsure where the lines between love and facination blur; but he’s slowly realizing he loves you. He hasn’t felt such a way in decades. He’s been alive for very very long. No human woman has made him feel so helpless. He enjoys it thoroughly.
He’ll confess, the night before Gotham is meant to be blown to the ground. He’ll turn up, before the events are set in motion. You won’t have a clue in the world what he’s up to.
“My dear.” He’ll drawl, and you’ll go to teleport away, as you always do. It’s tradition for you two at this point.
Before you get a chance, he’ll click is tongue at you.
“Wait.” He speaks, voice sounding strangely desperate. It makes you freeze. “Come with me. Leave the city. Get somewhere else. I’d like to show you my home.”
Your choice, if you choose to leave with him. He’d make for a very attentive lover, and would protect you at any cost. But if you choose to do so, you’ll leave Tabitha and Barbara and Selina to their own fate <\3
Not that it matters if you decide to reject his offer. He’ll have you, one way or another.
ra's al ghul and slade wilson x bruce reader's daughter , scenario where both men fell in love with her when the batfamily faced them and saw how she took down the ninjas with precision and speed , but in that one of the ninjas managed to cut her arm to take it off blood . With that they made a son with the DNA of the three.
Years passed and the men thought it was a good time for the reader to meet her son, but they didn't know that she couldn't have children of her own because of her past with the red room (she was a black widow but bruce it found ) . When Bruce and the reader arrive where they asked to meet, they see the two men and Bruce asks "What do you want?" and then Slade starts to explain that their meeting years ago and meanwhile Ra's calls Theseus and when the son of a bitch reader comes out of the shadows, Batman and his daughter can only look, but only the reader just looked at her son and left there without talking to anyone.
The men were shocked and the son sad because his mother didn't even speak to him. Bruce seeing that the men want to go after his daughter says "Do you think you haven't done enough?" and then Ra's starts to say something but Bruce interrupts "She can't have children after what she went through in the red room" and then Ra's and Slade now realize why she reacted and remember what the red room does as a graduation ceremony.
And then Bruce looks at his grandson and says "You're not the problem, your mother just needs time to process everything". And then he turns and walks away looking for his daughter.
Two days later, the reader finds the two men and says "I just want to talk to Theseus, I came in peace." and then one of the assassins takes the reader to his son and then the two look at each other for a while. And then she starts by saying "When I finished my training in the red room they gave me a mandatory hysterectomy, nothing more matters than a mission." and then Theseus says "not even a child" and then the reader nods "I apologize for my reaction at that night , I never imagined that I would have a child " .
And then mother and son start talking and the two killers can only watch them from the cameras and hope that she can give them a chance to be a family.
My god. It's literally a masterpiece.
The reader and his son will manage to become a family together. He will apologize to his son for his behavior when they first met. The two men are watching the happiness of the mother and son away. Maybe they will try to join the family.
You Deserve To Be Happy
Jason Todd X Reader
Warnings: heavy angst, injury, blood, crying, suggestive content.
Words:1429
Arthur's notes: Good mom Talia.
Damian tries to convince Jason that he needs and deserves to be reunited with Y/N. All while he tells Y/N a secret he's been keeping from her.
Tumblr media
Damian only sees glass shards, he reaches out to the sky helplessly, never feeling quite a fear such as this. He hoped somehow someone would catch him. He thought he was strong enough to face Ra's alone...
Just as he feels that it would be his end. A arm catches him. The young man holds the injured Robin landing onto a roof top. He didn't have time to personally strangle Ra's for trying to kill his baby brother.
Damian is gently placed on the ground. He gasps seeing the face of his dear brother. It couldn't be him, he hadn't seen him in many months. He must be hallucinating.. Damian feels his eyes shaking as he had spent many days fearing his brother would never return.
Jason didn't say a word as he gently bandages his wounds from the glass shards. Jason tapped the emergency button on his utility belt. He moved to touch Damian's forehead to attempt to calm him down. His hand stopped hearing the bat-mobile. Damian gripped his wrist with what very little strength he had. Knowing well his brothers instincts were to flee.
Jason looks seeing his desperate pleading eyes for to him to stay with him. It broke him to leave him again. As much as he wanted to be there for him. He couldn't.. He can't. So much of his pain lingered and he could hardly even bear to think of seeing Bruce again.
"I'm sorry"
"NO!! NO!!" he begged now crying missing his brother
Jason shakes his head loosening Damian's grip on his wrist lowering it carefully on Damian's chest. He leaves Damian before their father arrives.
Bruce was grateful he was alone so no one would see the tears now falling down his face. All he knew was that Ra's had been in Gotham and now judging the fact his son needs help, he knew he had a altercation with Damian.
"shh it's ok you're safe now" he promised his crying son
Bruce used the spy-contacts inspecting Damian. He noticed the bandaging. Who helped him? Anyone amongst those of whom he trusted would not leave his side, unless they wished not to be seen.
Bruce lifts Damian into his arms he didn't know his son was searching with what only strength he had for the fallen Robin.
Jason heavily breathes in and then out. He was sitting on a cold concrete floor. His eyes glow bright green and flash back to their natural color. He was scared...
He still had so much built up rage. Though Bruce is Damian's father and.. He was his father at one point. He had tried to convince himself that forcing Bruce to kill Joker would prove to him that he cared enough for him to avenge his death.. When that didn't work, he disappeared... He came back to Gotham when he caught wind that Ra's was looking for Damian.
"I know you believe because your father spared Joker's life that your own life meant nothing to him. I almost killed Joker myself but.. it would only be more blood and it wouldn't have brought you back. Losing you nearly killed him. He continues to suffer every day" Talia had said to him.
Talia left for a mission requested by her father and never returned.... Jason didn't think twice taking Damian with him. Damian met his father but Jason was long gone.
Jason tried to face Y/N but his heart became blanketed in fear. Would she even believe that it was, really him? He was scared somehow he'd hurt her again. She was the first person he remembered and the one who he would think about in his darkest moments.
....
Y/N walks into her kitchen for a late night snack she turned on the lights and yelps by the small person standing near her
"Damian! Must you startle me like that" she exclaimed.
"tt you need better locks.."
"yeah I do" she agreed annoyed "is there a reason why you've decided to sneak into my apartment unannounced?"
".. I have been keeping a secret from you.." he admitted partly because he did not know how to properly tell her everything.
"ok. Do you want some tea? We can make cookies? Then we can talk about whatever it is you want to tell me"
With their tea freshly made in their cups. Damian helps Y/N by stirring the batter. His eyes gaze to the fridge with pictures of Jason with her. He looked.. Happy. He could only remember him smiling a few times during his childhood...
Damian remembered looking through Jason's drawings as a young child. Most of them were of Y/N.. Damian had recognized her to be the person in his drawings. The first moment he met her.
He wanted to tell her about Jason just as he did his family but he knew Jason had made him promise not to. Though his loneliness was going on for far too long.
"Jason was your boyfriend?"
Her heart physically drops at the mention of his name. She cleared her throat taking a, sip of her tea.
"he uhu yeah" she bitterly smiled "he was a really great guy. He was my first boyfriend and probably my last, he was a lot like you. Loved Jane Austen, after he stole the book from me" she chuckled with a saddening smile
"Pride and Prejudice?"
She swallowed hardly her grief trying to force itself, in like a knife to her back "how.. How do you know?"
"he told me.."
Utter denial, and shock "Damian are you?..." she began to cry, her body shakes.
Damian nodded. He's alive. She began to lose her breath unable to calm down. He helps her sit on the chair, taking her tea from her hands and placed it onto the table. She knew Damian could be rude at times, but he would never lie to her. He really is alive.
"deep breaths" he said patting her back.
She listened to what he told her. She began taking deep breaths in and out repeatedly, eventually calming down enough to speak.
She holds his arms with her hands "H-how? His body.." she stuttered unable to allow the painful memory to unfold "where is he? Is he ok?"
Damian explained everything to her ending with "you may hate me if you wish for not telling you sooner"
"no! No! I could never hate you. It's ok" her lips tremble as she began to cry again "oh Jason" she cried
She covered her face in her hands as she sobs. Damian laid his head on her shoulder to comfort her.
....
Jason began stepping down the ladder into the underground bomb shelter to Gotham PD his current hideout.
"here to take my book, Twerp?" Jason asked his baby brother
Damian was infuriated Jason could always know when he was there just like Talia. He could never sneak up on either of them.
Jason turns the lights on seeing Damian standing a few feet away from him.
"I told Y/N"
Jason's heart beats rapidly "you did what?!"
"you are wrong not to tell her you're alive" Damian accused
"dammit kid. This is none of your business!" he snapped taking off his jacket.
"tt you are miserable which makes it my business!" Damian scoffed
"I'm fine" Jason lied bitter
"she misses you.. She wants to see you Jason.. She has not healed from losing you.. She wants to be with you and I will not stand by to allow you to give up"
He was right. The kid was right.
....
Jason rings the door bell holding flowers in his hand. She opens the door. She grips the door handle tightly bracing herself against the side of the door. So she wouldn't fall from her knees becoming weak.
Y/N knew he was alive but to see him.. To actually see his blue eyes that she had only been able to see in her brokenhearted memories.
"I couldn't remember what fl-fl--" he cleared his throat becoming emotional "flowers you like until I remembered.. I remembered us at the.. The fair and you.." his eyes start to shake
She wraps her arms around him letting herself break, but the best thing was that it was in his arms. She feels she can finally breathe.
Jason takes a deep breath as he began to cry. He had spent so many times thinking about this moment and fearing the worst. Though it was worth it. She was worth it..
The new couple knew Damian was so going to take credit for this...
Let's be real, the rogue who'd be the most thrilled to have his S/O pregnant would be Ra's al-Ghul. How would he react to them telling him?
Ra's al-Ghul finding out his S/O is pregnant
Oh? The first Ra's al-Ghul ask, and it's you? Color me shocked. Who could have ever guessed this?
TW: pregnancy
- He notes your nervous energy and tries to mentally prepare himself for any poor news. He's lived this long, he's heard most everything.
- When you finally tell him, he's tense. You might confuse this for coldness or him being unhappy with the news. In truth, he's thrilled. Another heir, and with his beloved?
- the reason he's reeling that in, however, is being keenly aware you might not feel the same way. A child is a legacy... some do not wish that responsibility for themselves. More than acceptable. He waits to hear what YOU want.
- There's a good chance you're nervous which is fair. He assures you if you want to keep the child, you have his support.
- If you do keep the baby, expect to be pampered for the pregnancy. Ask him or his men for pretty much anything and they'll get it for you. Cravings and comfort are merely a request away.
- He loves spooning when you're pregnant, just feeling his hands over the belly for kicks. And expect all doctors appointments to be prompt and with experts. He wants to know everything as it happens for development.
- Talia might be a tad jealous at first because she suspects he might not be as harsh on your child as he was with her and Damian. It's another issue to add between her and her father but she does do her best not to begrudge you that.
- In fact, expect her to play a rather nurturing role. These are what she used for morning sickness. If you put your feet up like this, the swelling will feel better. She would like to be present at the birth... if you're okay with that.
- Talia, Ra's and even Damian are all excited to see the baby... as well as start teaching them hand to hand combat asap.
Ra's Al Ghul kidnapping reader, a son of Bruce, because he 'finds him interesting'. Obviously the reader is put off, but after some time and some really kind treatment from Ra's, reader kinda finds him sweet, at this point Bruce's comes to rescue reader and stomp on Ra's skul, but the reader convinces him to not kill Ra's, and Ra's and reader kinda develop a relationship, but the reader is still a bit 'you didn't have to kidnap me, but I guess you are just different but don't think I'll let this go, we'll do this how i want it to go'
Hell yeah. Oh Bruce is ready to kill someone. Hehe... I love it. Also, can't find and gifs of Ra's so a repeat of one of the former ones. Also, I'm done with school until my exams begin! A weekend off... Ah... Sounds like heaven.
Summary: (Y/N) gets kidnapped by Ra's. (Y/N) is confused and scared.
Warnings: kidnapping, Ra's tries to make (Y/N) like him, Ra's is sweet to (Y/N)...
Tumblr media
(Y/N)'s eyes opened, head pounding like someone wacked him with a hammer. So he was either drugged or really got hit in the head with a hammer. Also, why does the bed feel far too comfortable for a... Why is the bed so damn soft comfortable?
(Y/N) sat up in bed, hissing from the headache as he looked around the room, nearly getting a stroke. The room was lavish. I mean, more than lavish. Whoever kidnapped him is rich, but not just rich, filthy rich.
The room was just marble and gold. This person had money to burn. Not to mention, everything is more spacious... This person was a shit ton of money to burn. (Y/N) closed his eyes as he tried to remember what has happed before this.
He was walking to his car from the college building... And then... A full on blackout. Well, that is not good... How much time has even passed? A day? A few hours?
More importantly, does Bruce know he's missing?! (Y/N) was never a vigilante. He knew self defense, but this is something... (Y/N) laid back down from the headache. He huffed as he laid back down on the bed, the bed warm and comforting. And soft... Is this silk?
Not even Bruce has that much money to burn.
(Y/N) sat up when he heard the door opening, eyes widening at the sight of Ra's Al Ghul entering a room, with... Water and some sort of rectangular box? What the hell?
" Ah, I see you are awake. Is your headache bad? " Ra's asked as he closed the door behind him.
" What in the actual fuck?! " (Y/N) yelled, wincing as he made his headache worse. " You old bastard. " (Y/N) added, making Ra's chuckle as he approached the bed, sitting on the edge of it, observing (Y/N).
" Nothing I didn't hear before. Now, do take these pain meds. " Ra's said as he presented a box. Now, (Y/N) was suspicious beyond belief.
" And how do I know they weren't tempered with? " (Y/N) asked as he took the box, checking it carefully.
" I give you my word that the pills weren't tempered with. Now, take two. They'll help you with the pain and you'll sleep it off. " Ra's said as he watched (Y/N), who was now hesitantly opening the box. Ra's watched in silence as (Y/N) took the pills, downing them with the water from the bottle.
" Now, just lie down and sleep it off. You'll feel better once you wake up in the morning. " Ra's said as he made (Y/N) lie down, making sure to tuck him in.
(Y/N) watched in silence and more so in shock. Why in God's name is Ra's so gentle? This has to be a manipulation. A tactic. Lower down your guard and then, when you least expect it, bam! You get hit where it hurts the most and then they catch you off guard and you are killed.
(Y/N) just needed to stay alive long enough for Bruce to find him. That's it. (Y/N) wanted nothing more then Bruce to find him. His room sounded nice. (Y/N) felt more and more drowsy as the seconds passed, under the eye of Ra's al Ghul.
" Just relax. Don't fight it. " Ra's whispered as he dimmed the lights to make it more bearable to sleep in. And the headache was slightly better. Then, Ra's came back and checked to see if (Y/N) is properly tucked into bed.
And (Y/N) couldn't fight the pills, no matter how hard he tried. His eyes closed, body finally happy to rest again, but this time with no pain. Ra's stayed for a couple of more minutes, watching (Y/N) as he slept, hand gently reaching to caress (Y/N)'s cheeks. So soft, Ra's thought as he enjoyed the fact that (Y/N) was finally here, with him.
Ra's couldn't wait any longer if he tried. Now there was a sense of contentment as (Y/N) was on his base, with him. Yes, he did follow (Y/N), but he wasn't a normal stalker. Well, he isn't a stalker. He simply found (Y/N) interesting.
And Ra's has every right to explore that curiosity. And Bruce and his wrath? Well, he can and will deal with that later. Ra's stood up silently going to the door, giving one last glance at (Y/N)'s sleeping form, before leaving, closing the door behind him, locking it too, just in case that (Y/N) decides to leave the room.
Sure, his assassins will stop him, but still, never enough caution. And the base is in the middle of an ocean so escaping... Well, Ra's was confident that (Y/N) wouldn't escape. No way he could anyway. Ra's smiled to himself as he walked to his office, knowing that (Y/N) will be out for a while, which in turn meant that he could get back to his work.
(Y/N) woke up the next day, in no pain and actually more rested then before. (Y/N) took a deep breath as he explored the room. He needed to find a way out of here. Like, now. He started with the doors that looked like balcony doors. He saw water and nothing but the blue water and sky.
That bastard.
(Y/N) decided to abandon that route and just went to the other doors in the room. He opened the door and entered the biggest bathroom he has ever seen. A bath, a shower... Marble and gold yet again. (Y/N) looked around, curiosity taking over. And sure, he can try to be more careful, but if Ra's was to torture him...
He wouldn't do it in this lavish room. He wouldn't get blood on the marble... Maybe he would and he would just replace it, considering the amount of money he has to burn. (Y/N) sighed as he looked himself in the mirror. He didn't look like pure shit. He looked somewhat normal, as if he wasn't kidnapped.
(Y/N) closed the door behind himself and then doing the normal morning business in the bathroom. He quickly pissed and flushed the water behind him. He washed his hands and then he washed his face with water, just to wake himself up a little bit more.
He sighed as he went back into the room, however, he nearly jumped out of his skin when Ra's was just sitting on the edge of the bed, legs crossed elegantly. His eyes seemed to soften when he saw (Y/N).
" I see that you are awake. How is your head? " Ra's asked softly and (Y/N) was now caught off guard. Completely.
" It's great. No pain. " (Y/N) said hesitantly, eyes narrowing in suspicion. Now, something is way fucking off. Ra's al Ghul, this soft with the son of his enemy?
He is going to get tortured soon. Just thrown into a dungeon and broken...
" Why in God's name are you so... So... I can't even say soft because you and soft don't go together. " (Y/N) said, making sure to not move an inch. He needs as much space as possible.
Ra's chuckled at the statement. Soft and Ra's al Ghul don't go together, that much was right.
" I'm soft because of you. I kidnapped you here because I thought you were interesting. And maybe there are some feelings involved too. " Ra's admitted, watching as (Y/N) became speechless. (Y/N) was trying to respond, but couldn't say anything. His mouth was opening and closing.
No sound came out.
" What? Ra's al Ghul and feelings? Damian was wrong. You are capable of feeling something. But I'm pretty damn sure that all of this is just a ploy to get me to lower my guard down and then bam! I'm in a dingy cell. And tortured. " (Y/N) said crossing his arms as he leaned on the wall.
Ra's laughed. (Y/N)'s eyes widened both at the sound and the scene.
Ra's al Ghul laughing? Pigs must be flying outside.
" What's so funny? You are a ruthless man. I've heard things you've done. "
Ra's stopped, eyes still soft. " I have a soft spot for you. I won't torture you. You have my word that nothing bad will happen to you for as long as you behave. " Ra's explained as he stood up, eyes still soft and still trained on (Y/N).
" If I didn't know you and your honesty, I would've called bullshit. " (Y/N) muttered and Ra's chuckled.
" I do speak the truth and more so, I would never lie to you. Are you hungry? It's been a while since you ate. " Ra's asked, watching as (Y/N) tilted his head, clearly still suspicious about Ra's and his treatment.
" I could eat something... As long as you don't lace it with something." (Y/N) mumbled and Ra's chuckled.
" I won't lace your food with anything. You have my word. " Ra's promised softly, offering (Y/N) a smile in return. " What would you like? " Ra's asked and (Y/N) shrugged his shoulders.
" What is it that Americans like to eat? Pancakes? Bacon? Anything heavy? " Ra's teased and (Y/N) was shocked yet again. Ra's al Ghul teasing?
" I like something light. Some granola, yogurt and fruit is my go to. " (Y/N) explained and Ra's nodded, pretending he didn't know that already.
" Come with me. I would like to share breakfast with you. " Ra's said as he opened the door for (Y/N), stepping outside to allow (Y/N) to get out first.
(Y/N) huffed at the fact, but stepped out anyway. Ra's smirked from behind him, gently leading (Y/N) to Ra's room and then through the said room to get to a beautiful terrace with a beautiful view of of the ocean and the sky...
" Please, do sit. " Ra's said, pointing at a chair to his right, before sitting down on the chair to the left. (Y/N) sat down, getting comfortable as he took in the fresh air, a salty smell in the air.
" No fresh air in Gotham I see? " Ra's said, turning to one of his guards, giving him an order in Arabic. The guard left and (Y/N) closed his eyes for a moment.
" Not really. " (Y/N) said. Even though he lived far enough to not be affected by the polluted air, he still couldn't get fresh air. But this? This is amazing.
" Glad to see you relaxed. " Ra's said and (Y/N) snorted.
" I'm not relaxed. I'm not trusting you as far as I can throw you. " (Y/N) said as he opened his eyes again, glancing at Ra's, who had an amused smirk on his face.
" I gave you my word that I won't do anything to you. As long as you behave of course. "
(Y/N) scoffed, but stopping when he heard the guard come back with food. He put the tray on the table between them. (Y/N) took a look into the bowl that was facing him. Granola, yogurt and some fruit...
" Your go to breakfast. I listened, you see. " Ra's said as he started eating his breakfast.
(Y/N) eyed the food suspiciously, but still ate it none the less. He was hungry and food sounded great at the moment.
" Later, I want to show you around the premises. I have a library in my office, filled with some literature classics that I'm sure you will like. " Ra's said and (Y/N) raised his brow.
How did he knew that? He does like classics the most, but he likes all genres.
" I won't question how you know that. I don't think I'll like that answer. " (Y/N) said and Ra's smirked.
" It's better that way. "
It's been a few weeks and (Y/N) has never been so confused in his entire life. Ra's was nice and gentle to him. (Y/N) was loosing his mind slowly. But in the entire process, (Y/N) was developing feelings for him too.
If it weren't for the assassin part, Ra's would be a man of his dreams. Gentle, attentive, handsome... (Y/N) thought about Stockholm syndrome. Immediately. But for a few weeks... They can't develop that fast can they?
(Y/N) was sleeping in his room, tired from the heat of the day. He was sleeping peacefully, but woke up when he heard a crash. His heart was beating fast as he sat up, throwing the blanket off of him. What the hell was going on?
He stepped out of the room, looking for Ra's. He may know self defense, but he doesn't have experience in this thing.
" RA'S! " He heard a deep yell and he recognized it immediately. It was Bruce's... Oh God, Bruce will break the code. (Y/N) ran to the office, stopping at the doorway.
" Dad! " (Y/N) yelled and both stopped fighting. Bruce turned his head, eyes widening at the sight of his son. Not hurt... Nothing...
" (Y/N)? " Bruce said quietly, clearly not believing his eyes. He quickly walked over, checking over his son, then hugging him tightly. " My son... " Bruce breathed out, happy to see his sons alive.
" (Y/N), go to the roof to the Batplane, I have some unfinished business with Ra's. " Bruce said, turning to Ra's and (Y/N) knew that look.
Bruce was pushed over the edge. And he is ready to kill.
" No! Don't kill him! " (Y/N) said as he grabbed Bruce's arm, trying to stop him.
" He hurt you! More so, he kidnapped my only son who isn't a vigilante! That won't go unpunished! " Bruce said, ready to lunge at Ra's.
" He didn't hurt me! Please dad! " (Y/N) begged, clinging onto Bruce, stopping him with his weight.
" He didn't? "
" He treated me gently! I wasn't hurt! " (Y/N) said and Bruce's head whipped to look at him in shock. " Don't kill him dad. Please. " (Y/N) pleaded again and Bruce relaxed a little bit.
" Are you being honest with me? " Bruce asked and (Y/N) nodded.
Bruce sighed quietly as he held his son tightly to him. (Y/N) turned his head to look at Ra's. " As for you Ra's... " (Y/N) started, not sure how to proceed.
Ra's waited patiently for (Y/N) to finish what he was going to say.
" You didn't really have to kidnap me, but since we have developed something, I want to see where this goes. Sure, you may be different, but don't think I'll forget this. This relationship will go on as I please. " (Y/N) declared and Bruce felt nothing but pride for his boy.
" As you wish beloved. We will do it at your pace. " Ra's said and Bruce glared at him.
" Damian won't be happy. " Bruce noted.
" Damian will be happy to finally have some sort of payback. " (Y/N) retorted and Bruce chuckled.
" Well, either way, it's time to go home. Your brothers are worried. " Bruce said, leading (Y/N) out.
" Bye Ra's. " (Y/N) said as he was led out of the room and Ra's smirked.
" Bye (Y/N). See you soon. " Ra's said and Bruce nearly decked Ra's for even saying that. But he had more important matter right now.
And that's getting his son home.
Omg I just reread Neglected again thanks to the ask and the way that story hurts and ended is soo satisfying I was wondering what would Talia think of the while thing goin down? Did she also favor Damien? and I also had forgotten that batsis was brought back to life like Jason, like how did she die? Also I'm sorry for bothering of I am this story is just amazing to read
You're not bothering me at all! Thank you so much for reading it. I'm glad you enjoy it
Talia wouldn't know until it was too late. It'd take a long time for her to rebuild the League and she'd be busy making sure the people in the League were ones she could trust. She'd check on them from a distance but never interact with them. She didn't want to put them in more danger by having enemies see she knew them. Due to her upbringing, she'd have a prejudice towards Damian as he'd be the heir of the League since he's a male. Ra's didn't let Talia be the heir due to her gender and enforced the importance of a male heir. She'd subconsciously be sexist but for the most part doesn't believe women are inferior to men. She did her best to raise her children equally despite the circumstances and did not approve of the batfam's treatment towards her daughter (besides Jason). She makes sure to send Jason a special hand-crafted dagger as a thank you for being there for batsis (he's very confused but delighted as it came with no note). As for being brought back to life, I don't remember that part of the story but she protected Ra's from a traitor. He was about to be shot but batsis got in the way and killed the traitor. She bled out from the bullet wound and multiple cuts. An unidentified poison was on the blade she was cut with. The Lazarus pit wouldn't be used if she'd died in combat under other circumstances as she'd be considered not good enough.
You Are Loved, Damian Wayne
summary: Some patrols are a little more rough than others. With a young death lingering in Damian's mind, it reminded him a little too much of his own past.
word count: 2,680~
warnings: Ra's is an asshole, referenced child-abuse, angst, victim blaming, referenced child death, blood, disassociation, mild panic attack, Damian is aged up and is trying to break generation trauma
Rant fic? Rant fic.
Gotham was particularly gloomy tonight. The city had a way of reflecting the emotions of the masses, taking in every fleeting feeling and making it tangible in its night sky. The portraits Gotham painted with its clouds put every thought, every emotion, every miniscule sensation, into words.
Tonight the clouds were a harsh shade of coal. A thunderstorm was brewing in the distance. Rain pattered against the window like tiny bullets trying to chip away at the glass. The insistent beating was so loud in the silent room, it almost made your ears pop.
You watched from afar, feeling like there was a solid wall between you and your lover. You heard him come in, the telltale sound of your window creaking open and deadly silent footsteps. So you made your way to the study, expecting to find Damian cradling baby kittens in his cape to be warmed and cared for, maybe even a midnight snack.
Instead, you found him sitting at the window seat staring out into the city, unmoving. The tile near the window puddled with rain water, the edges of his cape dripped onto the floor to create even more. Every inch of him was soaked through. His bangs were plastered to his forehead, small droplets of water fell from each strand and made their way to the collar of his suit.
If he heard you enter the room, he made no show of it.
Damian was many things, vigilant was one of them. Yet, he was still as stone, even his fingers laid without so much as a twitch on top of his lap—it was unnerving. You found your eyes wandering for a second to ease your nerves. The black and gray fabric of his suit hid injuries easily, a small fact you had to learn the hard way. Stab wounds and bullet holes laid under the suit, forever hidden from the outside world; you promised to never let another one slip past you.
The room was so quiet.
Rain pelting against the window did nothing but add to the tense ambiance.
“Dames?” you whispered, watching—waiting—to see if Damian would react. The lenses of his domino mask continued to stare out the window, no doubt a glaze had taken over the green eyes underneath.
You breathed out slowly, taking a tentative step forward. The last thing you needed right now was to startle him or to overstep a guard you didn’t know was up. His katana was missing from his side, that fact alone made your heart sink.
You had never seen him weaponless before.
You knew better than anyone that his weapon was a comfort, a symbol of protection, a shield from the outside world. To have him so defenseless…he seemed almost broken.
One step forward.
The tile under your foot creaked.
One step, then another.
Damian didn’t move.
You continued forward.
The red of his gloves was darker than normal.
Another step forward.
You let out a breath.
One final step.
There was blood soaked into his hands.
You were just at the edge of the window seat, your thigh brushing against the polished wood. From so close, you could see a streak of blood on his jawline, a tiny handprint that sagged downwards in a jagged line. Your curiosity tried to sew the broken pieces of the story together to no avail, too many clues were obstructed from your view for you to understand his turmoil.
With measured movements, you slowly sat down in front of him on the opposite side of the seat. You mirrored his body language out of habit: one foot curled close to you while the other stayed near the floor, relaxed yet ready to escape at a moment's notice.
Your foot brushed over the puddle on the floor, the icy feeling shooting up your leg and settling into your body. Without a word spoken into the air, you stayed beside him, your own eyes looking out into the Gotham skys.
A rough night.
Some were worse than others.
Some nights you were awoken by a hurried phone call, followed by the scariest drive of your life, all while you tried to make your way to him, to find out if he was okay.
Some nights you were called in because he asked for you, calling you out by name because only you could pull him out of a fear-induced haze.
Some nights you felt fingers against your pulse points, checking to make sure his nightmares never infected reality.
Some nights you were pulled securely into his chest while others, you pulled him into yours, holding onto each other well into the night.
Some nights you bandaged him with shaky fingers, his steady voice repeating first aid instructions until you completed them.
But tonight was none of those.
Tonight Damian was long gone, his brain disconnecting from his body the second he reached safety. So you waited, waited until he trudged back to you, never once leaving his side. He didn’t need pretty words, he didn’t need a grounding touch, he didn’t need much more than your presence.
Your presence alone was enough for him to pull himself back to the grim world, pull himself back to you. He needed your patience, your time, and the reassurance that you stood steady beside him.
Thunder rolled in the distance, the storm coming closer to you two.
“He was ten.”
You blinked slowly, willing the patter of your anxiety to go away. Damian’s voice was soft as always, a steady rumble that was soothed at the edges, it sounded like hardened caramel being melted down again. He spoke those words in such a voice that made your heart sink.
Slowly, one piece at a time, the story unfolded.
You let the air stagnate, allowing Damian to control the pace of the encounter.
“He…” Damian paused, trying to find the right words to translate the barbed wire tangled in his chest. He swallowed, blood moving as his Adam’s Apple bobbed. “I was too slow.”
Damian tore his gaze away from the widow and down to his hands. “I could’ve prevented it, I could’ve saved him,” you could see his fingers starting to shake, “but I was too clumsy, too distracted.”
His bite the words out, each syllable was a tiny knife aimed straight for his own heart. “A child lost their life today because of my own incompetence,” Damian sighed out harshly, “my own stupid mistakes left a family broken and grieving.”
You felt the back of your nose start to burn.
“Oh Damian,” you let out, surprise and sadness warping your words. Your hands longed to hold his. His eyes were locked on the blood sticking to his gloves, his guilt forcing him to endure a punishment so cruel.
“Baby, look at me,” you asked. When his gaze didn’t falter, your hands reached for his one inch at a time. When your fingertips brushed against the backs of his hands, he let you completely wrap his hands in your hold, covering the grueling sight from his eyes.
“Please look at me,” you pleaded. With his binds unlocked, his gaze could move freely. He clawed himself out of the sludge in his brain to look up at you. Damian felt lightheaded from the effort it took to lift his head with the entire world weighing on his back.
Is this how Atlas must have felt? Carrying all of humanity on his back, feeling the weight of all of their lives right on his shoulder blades. Feeling every death looming over his head like a threat. One misplaced breath, one wobble, and all of humanity would die by his hand.
The white lenses peered soulless in front of you, a front to the crumbling composure hidden underneath. His hands were limp in your hold, barely caring when you transferred them over into one hand. With your newly freed hand, you reached out to him until you could caress the side of his face.
“You know you can’t save everyone.” Your thumb slipped under the edge of his mask as you traced the curve of his cheekbone.
He let you peel off his domino until you could drop it onto the floor. You rubbed at the skin underneath, massaging out any irritation from the adhesive.
“I know,” he supplied.
You looked into his emerald eyes. They were so delicate tonight, shattered with the burden of a lost life. Damian felt so hollow, so see-through.
“He was the same age I was.”
There it was.
Damian knew better than anyone the advice that came with this job, he heard it countless times from his siblings and repeated it all the same. Guilt did nothing but cloud the mind, make your reactions sloppier, and reaction time slower. He didn’t dwell on the past often, but he remembered it, every single name and every single person.
He wasn’t used to giving himself that reprieve, but he had grown into it with time. Mistakes became something normal again instead of punishable. Damian finally felt safe to be vulnerable, to be human.
But a story too similar to his own was a quick way to backtrack all that progress.
“He fought until his dying breath like some kind of soldier. No kid should ever have that burden rest on their shoulders.”
“No,” you agreed, “they shouldn’t.”
Your hand returned to his once you were confident he’d hold your gaze. Your fingers tugged at the edge of his gloves. You were met with no resistance as you pulled the gloves off completely, dropping them on the floor beside his mask.
“He was just a kid,” Damian scowled, his eyebrows furrowing with fury, “I was just a kid.”
You sighed out in understanding, the final piece finally clicking into place. It was rare that Damian spoke out against his lineage, even rarer that he spoke about his experience with the League. He was always so proud of his upbringing, a good little soldier ready to fight without a second thought, a well-trained robot.
His grandfather had guided him, trained him from birth to be a staple of perfection, he never mourned his childhood because he didn’t know what it felt like to have one. The blood running through his veins was always something to honor, something noteworthy.
But over the years the facade crumbled piece by piece, chipping away at his ego until all he was left with was disgust. All the pride he once felt towards his lineage was replaced with shame, guilt, repulsion. He was shown unconditional love and was finally able to experience a childhood with people who loved and supported him.
But every time he was reminded of his past, Damian couldn’t help but question it.
Someone who loved him wouldn’t do that…would they?
He was nothing more than a pawn.
“You didn’t deserve that either,” you spoke softly into the air, massaging his cold hands until they warmed up in your hold. Brittle fingers returned with feeling, he let himself hold onto you in return, his fingers clumsily clasping onto yours.
“You deserved to be loved and cared for,” you stressed, squeezing his hands as you continued.
You’d be lying if you said you didn’t compile a hatred for how life treated him before you met. You watched and held onto him as his nightmares plagued him deep into the night. You listened to his pleas against his grandfather, him begging for the pain to end, for the anguish to finally stop.
He clung to you in those moments, his brain barely recognizing that he made it out. Sometimes he’d resort back into old habits every time something happened, patiently waiting for a punishment that would never come, a punishment that should never have happened in the first place. Every time you’d whisper reassurances into his ears until he felt safe again, until the tension in his shoulders relaxed.
That side of Damian was one that very few people ever saw. His vulnerabilities and his weaknesses all felt too real.
“Then why,” Damian demanded. “Why wasn’t I?”
“Damian,” you breathed out, sadness etching into every vowel.
Damian’s eyes cracked even more, the vibrant green being infected into a deeper shade. His hands twisted out of your hold, shaky fingers swiftly unclasped his cape, throwing it harshly onto the floor. His next breath came out with a shudder, suddenly feeling suffocated by the mantle.
“What—” Damian’s breaths picked up, “What did I do? What did I do to deserve that?”
There were many stories Damian shared with you: the story of his scars, the battles he’d won, and every enemy he tore down. Once every blue moon Damian would tell a story that left you winded, a story of abuse, torture, and neglect.
He’d explain it with nonchalance, maybe even pride at how he endured the pain like a good heir should. But slowly, each story would be told with a little more hesitance as he realized how cruel these tales really were. As the victim in them, he’d misplaced the blame onto himself.
But not anymore.
“Come here,” you said, a gentle but stern command. Your arms reached out to him until he fell into a familiar embrace. His hands clung to the front of your shirt, fisting at the loose bedtime material.
With one arm rubbing up his shaking back, your other immediately combed through his hair. “You did absolutely nothing. You hear me?” You untangled a knot gently, the now-damp hair falling back into place. “You did nothing to deserve what he did to you. You were a kid, he never should have treated you that way. He was a monster.”
Damian sucked in a breath, burying his eyes into your shoulder.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying but he trained me.”
You didn’t comment on the fact that it was trained, not raised.
“If he truly is a monster, what does that make me? No matter what I do people keep calling me a demon, a monster. His blood is running through my veins, what makes me think I can be any different?”
He shook in your arms, completely breaking down until he was nothing more than pained breaths. You held onto him tighter, wrapping your arms completely around him, not caring at all when his wet uniform soaked your clothes.
“You’re different because you’re willing to grow.” You didn’t speak more than a whisper, his ear right next to your mouth. “These past few years you’ve been learning, you’ve been willing to listen to the people around you and change. You’re not a monster, Damian, you never were. You were a child who was following orders.”
Damian sobbed for the first time. The barbed wire around his heart loosened, the relief was so overwhelming his body acted on impulse.
You rubbed up his back, feeling the kevlar and fabric underneath your hand. “Now you’re an adult who’s unlearning everything your grandfather taught you because you’re willing to break that trend so no one else has to feel it. And my god, are you so incredibly strong for that. That monster is not nearly as strong as you are.
“I’m so proud of how far you’ve come, my love, and you should be proud, too.”
You shushed his next gasp for air, guiding his breaths until they could follow yours with ease. You dried his tears and kissed his wounds, letting him feel the love you held so dearly for him. When the blood was washed from his hands, you held onto them until they stopped shaking.
Warm water washed over his shoulders, soap softening the edges of his body until he melted back into your embrace. You felt his gratitude yourself, feeling how easily he leaned into your touch and whispered his own words of thanks into your lips. You tilted his head so your eyes could meet, the green as vibrant as it once was before. You held his gaze, letting all the warmth shared between you two settle into his heart.
“You are loved, Damian Wayne.”
