Donate Now to Bring Back the Bay Lights

UPDATE: $6m pledged. Four more $1m pledges and the project is a go! Crowdfunding of 11th million continues here. Widely considered one of the world’s great public art projects, The Bay Lights’ current system of LEDs is failing at a rate faster than can be repaired. They must be replaced with a new system that is custom engineered to perform in the harsh environmental conditions of San Francisco Bay. On March 5th, on the 10th anniversary of its initial Grand Lighting, the artwork will go dark. 

In total, $11M is needed for their return. We are raising ten $1M gifts from major philanthropists. This crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise $1M in smaller gifts, allowing everyone to participate. 

The good news: with your help, The Bay Lights by artist Leo Villareal will return more magically than ever. The number of programmable LEDs will double to nearly 50,000, making the artwork visible to communities around the Bay. And for the first time, we seek to have the lights be safely visible to drivers on the Bay Bridge, creating a world-class nighttime public art portal into San Francisco.

The San Francisco-based art nonprofit Illuminate is leading this effort. Please join us in helping return this public art masterpiece. Your gift of any size will help. We will do this collectively, one dollar, one hundred dollars, or $1M at a time.

All gifts made to The Bay Lights 360 campaign are restricted and will be used only to cover Bay Lights-related expenses.

Me and my family have been struggling financially for a very, very long time now. For as long as I’ve lived, I can’t remember a single time where we’ve had enough money to live comfortably for even a moment. A few months ago, our kitchen floor became warped, and what we initially thought was a flood under our kitchen floor became so, so much worse. We were told that there is asbestos in our kitchen. For the past two months, we’ve been living in a cramped, miserable hotel while a bunch of strangers go in and out of our home to work PAINSTAKINGLY SLOW on gutting and rebuilding our entire kitchen. I am the oldest child of 3 younger brothers. My Mom, who is insanely smart and strong-willed, has been doing everything she can possibly do in order to make sure we have enough money for food. My Dad works in the oil fields, meaning he is unavailable for months at a time, leaving just me and my Mom to take care of all of the kids.

To sum things up, we are experiencing a living hell. I graduated just before this nightmare happened. I had plans to get a job, start earning money and to generally become more self-sufficient overall, and I have done none of that because of all this bullshit. It has taken an extreme toll on my mental health to the point where I am scared of my own thoughts and feelings. I’m done sugar coating things. If you are reading this and you can donate anything at all, even if it’s just a couple dollars, do it. We want our life back. We want our home back.

Hello, I didn’t want to do this because I hate asking for money but I haven’t eaten in two days and won’t get paid until the 23rd of this month.

I’m a 22 year old nonbinary person with severe mental health needs and autism. I was working towards getting a university degree when in June of 2022 I experienced an extremely traumatic event that left me barely able to leave my bed due to depression and flashbacks. On top of this, I have previous trauma from ab*se in childhood that caused me to develop psychosis, dissociation, and long term depression.

I am working full time to improve my mental health to the point that I can get a job but for now I live on government benefits. It barely covers my rent because the city I live in has such high renting prices. I’m barely scraping by and (although I hate to admit it) I need help.

I don’t need much money at all, just £50 to cover two weeks. This would allow me to buy groceries (enough to actually have two meals a day rather than one or none) as well as taking a massive weight off my mind.

I know times are tough but anything helps. I can provide proof of my diagnoses and finances if you wish (with sensitive information left out). If all my followers donated £0.20p then I would have all the money I need.
