#Cassandra Cain seeing someone’s emotions as they die

He doesn’t know how they got here, but Jason’s thankful for it. It’s not often that he speaks to Cass, when Jason’s passions are words and righteous murder and Cass’s passions are distinctly not that, but when they do speak, they manage to get along. Somehow.
“So, why don’t you kill?” Jason leans back on the couch, his favorite mug filled with Alfred’s hot chocolate.
Cass is curled against the arm of the sofa. She looks at him, head tilted. Jason knows she’s reading him, but he’s not sure what she’s finding. It’s humbling, and intimidating, to know she sees more than what he allows to show.
“I can see,” she says. “That one time… I killed. I saw. Pain. Fear. Desp- des- not wanting to die.”
“Desperation?”
Cass nods. One of her fingers fiddle with the material of the couch. Jason knows she’s allowing him to see the motion. He knows it’s her silent way of showing him trust.
“There is more. To dying. Like… like they see their lives-They think- remembers. Loves. Their life- regret, love, everything. It goes through-” Cass taps her temple.
“Their lives are flashing through their heads?”
“Yes. Good. Bad. Everything. I see.” Quieter, Cass adds “I know. I know them, then. I killed a life that I know. They love. Everyone, have something they love. I kill, I kill that love.”
“That must suck.”
Cass leans back. She nods, neck releasing their tension and eyes less hunted, more accepting.
“Yes. I don’t want to- I don’t want to be the end.” Cass swivels her shoulders towards him, now. “Why… why do you?”
“Me?” Jason… hasn’t thought about it for a while, nor too deeply. But this is Cass. And her honesty deserves an honest reply. “I kill because some people shouldn’t be left alive to hurt and kill others”
“Not about… Bruce?”
Jason took a sip of his hot chocolate. Cass settled more into the couch, her eyes clear and watchful.
“It used to be,” he admitted. “About him, I mean. It used to be about vengeance. But then I came back to Crime Alley, and then I saw the kids getting hurt instead of being protected. They’re innocent. And then, it wasn’t about Bruce anymore. Killing is just the means to an end now, for me.”
“Do you- not regret?” She makes a gesture at his leg, where on a normal day, his holsters would be.
“I try to make sure I don’t kill people I’d regret, no. Like, you know how sometimes you guys arrest muggers?”
Cass nodded.
“Sometimes,” Jason said, remembering the days of digging through trash for food and the lingering hunger that rumbled through his younger self’s stomach. “They mug people because they’re desperate. I don’t kill those guys. But people deal to kids? Who hurt sex workers? Rapists? They’re doing irreparable harm, with full knowledge of their actions. For profit, mostly. If they’re willing to ruin lives, then they should be ready for their own to be ruined. It’s justice, for people like me.”
Cass studied him. “Justice…?”
“The only kind us Alley kids could ever appreciate. Arresting an abuser, a threat, and having that stick is for the privileged. Having that threat removed completely is relieving.”
“Can’t trust the world to be fair. But death, is fair.”
“Yeah. I think if I saw as much as you do, it’d be harder to do. But I think I’d still kill, because one person’s suffering after a life of being evil is worth the safety of so many others. To know… well, I guess I’m glad I don’t know what that’s like.”
“I see.”
“I know you do,” Jason grins at her. “But not killing is an act of courage too. Even if B makes it seem like it should come instinctually.”
“Yes. He does not connect, with Damian. Does not understand, fully, how hard. To unlearn.”
“Yeah.”
They sit in silence for a while after that, listening to the sounds of their family clambering around in other rooms.
“Hey, Cass?”
Cass turned back to him.
“I would kill David Cain for you.”
He would. It makes the Pit seethe when he thinks about how much David Cain and Lady Shiva hurt Cass for her to get this insanely good at reading people. He hopes she sees the pure honesty and sincerity he feels at that declaration
Cass puts a hand on his shoulder and squeezed once. Twice.
“Okay. Thank you.”
“No objections?”
“… would not feel too bad.”
Jason snorted.
“Yeah. You and me both.”
He doesn’t know how they got here, but he’s thankful for it anyways, because he understands his sister just that much more now.

Batfam Fanfic Recs Part 1
Most of the Batfamily bonding fics I read are centered around Jason Todd aka Red Hood because he's my fav Robin so all of these probably have Jason . I don't have any x readers, most of them don't have relationships if they do there is no incest. I do like a good angsty fanfic with some emotional trauma but usually end in comfort so some of these may be too serious for your liking but i don't read anything above teen and up audiences cause i can't handle really sexual stuff.
Mother in the Earth by alexandredumas_eatyourheartout

Relationships:
Catherine Todd & Jason Todd
Summary:
“I wish you would say something,” Jason says quietly. “You’re always so quiet when I come around. Is it something I said?”

Relationships:
Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne

Sometimes Little Reds walk the path of needles, forbidden forests are urban jungles, the Woodsmen don't make it in time and disobedient children get eaten by wolves. It's when the story doesn't have the decency to end there that things get complicated.

Summary:
or, 5 times Jason Todd saved his siblings... and one time they saved him.
This fic is completely written and will post weekly.
It was only by luck that Jason was still there when the bodies came crashing down the street. Bad luck, he would argue. He could hear them long before he could see them, their bodies preceded by the thunderous pounding of boots of asphalt and shouted curses. Three or four figures flashed by his little alleyway, a tight mob followed by a lone, slender figure in a streaming cape.

Whoever dumped the wood here must not have been paying attention, because they missed the huge fucking nail sticking out of one of the planks. It tore right through the side of Jason’s left hand, the wound deep and jagged. The lighting is horrid, but even Jason can tell that the dark fluid coating his hand is blood—so much that the sight alone makes him queasy.
Fuck. Fuckety fucking shit. This is going to need a fuck ton of stitches, and Jason can officially cross hand model off his list of potential careers.

Gotham Knights: Story
“In breaking news, we’ve received reports of an explosion somewhere north of the city.” “We’re still waiting for the police to confirm if there are any victims.” “This story is evolving rapidly, please bear with us.” “We hear this really loud, ‘boom’... there was smoke everywhere.” “Emergency services have confirmed that they have discovered a body buried in the wreckage. We’re still waiting for further details.” “Many emergency vehicles are on sight!” “It appears that a large portion of the building has actually collapsed!” “In International news, an explosion rocked Gotham City earlier today.” “We’re now able to confirm that billionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne is--”
This game is kicking it off with a “BANG” worthy of the Joker’s attention. Bruce flipping “Batman” Wayne is allegedly killed in some kind of explosion and it’s up to our rag tag team of “Gotham Knights” to keep Gotham safe.
Yes, I said “allegedly”. This may be jumping the gun a little and nothing in the trailer hints at it, but I do believe that Batman is still alive. I think he thought he was going to die, but ended up getting kidnapped by the Court for some kind of plan-- but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Breaking it Down
Here’s what we know about the story so far from the trailer and game play demo:
Bruce is “dead” (Nothing short of a body, tested and proved to not be a clone, duplicate, or just a decoy will convince me otherwise), as the result of some kind of explosion that literally rocked the city.
He’s left Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin the Belfry as a place of operations
He has also asked them to protect Gotham for him
For some reason, Bruce was alone when he died. It is unclear if he was in his “Batman” get up at the time of his death, or if he was “Brucie”.
Jim Gordon is dead and has been for some time. The result of his death is the GCPD doesn’t trust the Bats anymore.
Alfred is alive (Thank Gotham for that) and helping the Batfam
Mr. Freeze is involved in the game as a villain, most likely not the main villain but part of the main campaign. His plan involves freezing Gotham for reasons unknown.
The Court of Owls is the main bads of the game and may or may not have killed/kidnapped Bruce.
A few random minor points (with pictures!):
Jason has most likely been killed by the Joker and brought back with the Lazarus pit (as seen from the white in his hair and where that scar on his face most likely came from).
Tumblr media
Barbara has most likely been shot and paralyzed by the Joker, but has since recovered as seen by the wheelchair in the foreground of the Clock Tower.
Tumblr media
“Robin” is most likely Timothy Drake due to the science stuff surrounding him in his hideout/Titan room(?), the fact that he HACKED THE WATCHTOWER, and the cup of coffee on his desk (Honestly, the last point is the one that backs this claim up the most).
Tumblr media
Story may or may not play out differently depending on which Batfamily member you are playing as (Robin is not seen in any of the cut scenes with Batgirl during the game demo. This could be something they are adding in/was not ready for the demo, but I highly doubt it)
Speculations/Spit-balling Some Stuff
Bruce may have blown up the cave with him in it based on his comment about “this message was sent out when I destroyed the cave and it’s contents”. This is unclear as we do not know what blew up only knowing it was north of the city. Why he would do such a thing is beyond me, but these are the people who did Arkham Knight so who knows.
This may be some kind of “Found Family” story with the four batkids coming together with Alfred to bring justice for their Batdad. If so, I am all for it and am crossing all my fingers and toes.
I am severely concerned that the Court of Owls not only “killed” Bruce but is also responsible for Jim Gordon’s death. And for good reason because HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED THE FLIPPING OWL ON JIM’S BADGE? NO? JUST ME? OKAY! (I’ll build on this in a separate post)
Tumblr media
Other villains who may show up/I hope show up include but are not limited too: Deathstroke, a very SHORT cameo of sort from the Joker (hopefully in a flashback that helps build a character. eg. Jason or Barbra), Penguin, Ras Al Gaul (mostly because I want confirmation for a Damian Wayne DLC-- I want to see all my Bat Boys, dang it), Catwoman (as some kind of mentor character for one of the batkids, maybe?), Blockbuster, Black Mask, Dick’s evil Talon Grandfather, random members of the Court, you get the idea. Give us some of the more obscure villains mixed in with a FEW popular ones if you have too.
Calling it: Freeze’s plan is either based on a hopeful attempt to save with wife (the Court has that creepy reanimation of the Talons so maybe there’s some kind of cure he can make out of it???), or they are going to completely forget about his wife and just make him the villain for the sake of it. Please be the first thing.
At some point in the game there shall be a moment where Jason is question/confronted/kicks himself out because of the whole “gun” thing. Heck, it may start that way with Jason having to prove to his siblings that he can be trusted.
I’m hoping each character gets their own separate development/different story line and that we actually get them going through the separate stages of grief. Heck, each kid could be stuck on a specific stage (Tim on denial, Jason on anger, Dick on grief, Barbra on acceptance because she’s gone through this before very recently) Give us emotional batfamily, you cowards.
Building on that, I am hoping for separate campaigns/story lines for specific characters, which can serve as side missions or go to the main story, depending on the mission. (eg. Dick vs Blockbuster could be an optional side mission. Dick vs evil Talon grandfather would be essential to the main story)
Part of me wants Barbra and Dick to be “dating” or have had a past relationship. The other part of me just wants them to be friends/siblings so we’ll just have to see how the characters interact.
Give me an Alfred who kicks butt with his shotgun when the Talon’s invade the Belfry (“when”, NOT “if”)
If the Talon’s have Bruce, then I want an evil Batman vs the Batkids. And I don’t mean for one fight, I want him showing up half-way through the game and the kids have to fight to get him back. Give me a brainwashed Bruce that’s only snapped out of it because of his kids!
I want to see Tim transition from Robin to Red Robin or “Drake” if you have too.
A fight for the cowl between the kids before someone (most likely Alfred) steps in and tells them to be themselves, it’s what Bruce would have wanted.
Timothy Drake vs Ras Al Gaul
Jason Todd vs Black Mask
Barbra Gordon vs whoever killed Jim Gordon/is responsible for his death
Dick Grayson vs Deathstroke
Justice League references (mention Superman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lanterns, etc)
Please make this story stretch over MULTIPLE NIGHTS. Preferably longer than one month but I’ll take a week-- heck, I’ll take three days if you can’t make it longer. Change up the character for ever “night”, change the mission types (stealth, fight, info gathering, etc), do SOMETHING.
If DLC is a thing, I want to see Bruce Wayne “Batman” , Damian Wayne “Robin”, Duke Thomas “The Signal”, and either Stephanie Drake “Spoiler” or Cassandra Cain as “Black Bat” or “Orphan”. And add some story for all of them, pretty please?
Also: THEY CHANGED THE COURT NURSERY RHYME AND I HATE IT.

Summary: Nat sets out on her assignment to gather information about the bats, and ends up talking with Damian.
Natasha couldn’t seem to find anyone to investigate, which was weird. Usually, when she wanted to find someone, she did.  Nat hadn’t seen any of the other Avengers either, which was also strange.
So Natasha wandered the halls of the manor. She had already checked the Cave, though it was also empty.
After half an hour, Natasha turned to the gardens. She wasn’t really searching at that point, only enjoying the early afternoon breeze. But soon enough, she heard sounds of laughter.
Following it, Natsha wound through a shaded path to find a large lawn occupied by the bats, as well as Peter, Banner, and Thor.
They were in the middle of what seemed to be an extreme version of capture the flag. Nat looked for someone to talk too, but they were all invested in the game. Then she noticed Damian on the sidelines, inside a clearly marked square that must have been the ‘prison’. He looked angry, and seemed to be passing the time by doing drills with his katana. Once again, Natasha was struck by how precise he was.
"Hey kid."
Damian glanced at Natasha, clearly suspicious.
"Hello Romanoff, do you want something?''
Nat smiled. “Call me Natasha. And no, not really. You looked bored, so I thought I’d offer you some company.”
Damian scoffed and returned to his drills. Natasha sat down, and was soon joined by a large dog whom she had never seen before. "Is that your dog?" She asked.
Damian nodded stiffly. "Yes his name is Titus."
Nat looked at Titus with gentle eyes. "Hi Titus." She reached out her hand for the dog to sniff. Titus obliged, and then began to nussle  her hand, quickly warming up to Nat.
Damian’s whole demeanor changed at the sight. He relaxed significantly, and even had a soft smile on his face. “He likes you," Damian said as he set his katana aside and joined Natasha on the grass.
Nat smiled right back at him as she began to pet Titus. "Titus is a great name for him. Latin right?" Damian nodded. "You know the meaning?"
Damian scoffed. "If I didn't then I wouldn't have named him Titus. An honorable dog deserves a name that literally means `title of honor’."
Nat chuckled, surprising even herself. "I like you kid, you've got spunk.” She nodded over at the now abandoned katana. Time to see what she could get out of him. “And your fighting technique is impressive."
Damian’s face became a mixture of guarded and prideful. "Of course it is, I was trained to be the best."
"Well your father sure does a good job."
Damian pursed his lips and remained silent for a moment before replying. "He didn't train me. I … was trained by my mother."
Nat looked over at him softly. “The one that Jason blames for him killing?”
Damian scowled. “Yes. My mother is responsible for bringing my brother back from the dead using the Lazarus pit which is … not quite magic. The pit induces its user with enhanced aggression, and memory loss which she utilized to manipulate Todd to her will.”
Natasha sat still for a moment. She really didn’t know what to think. On the one hand, that did partially explain Jason’s references to murder. On the other hand … the woman sounded horrible.
“Why would she do that?” Nat asked quietly.
Damian stroked Titus for a long moment before replying. “My mother is part of a group called The League of Assassins - led by my grandfather - that is dedicated to … saving the world.”
Natasha almost raised an eyebrow at that. Assassins and world-savers really didn’t seem like they would go together well.
“Not like you saved the world,” Damian continued, “But through brutal, unforgiving justice. They wish to reform civilizations across the world into total submission to my grandfather.
“So my mother took it upon herself to take in a newly raised from the dead Jason Todd, train him, and set him upon Gotham. Her point to it all was to harm my father, who is very much against League ideals.”
There was a sudden shout of triumph from the game, and the pair looked over at Tim crowing over a downed Peter Parker. They were silent for a long time, watching the game play out. Finally, Nat took it upon herself to speak.
“I never knew my parents. I grew up in a top secret Soviet-Russian training facility designed to create the perfect operatives, or assassins.” She took a breath as she looked over at Damian.
The boy had shed his smirks and scowls. His eyes were wide and innocent. There was a quality of quiet hope in his face. Like he was amazed that someone else could understand him.
“You’re like me,” he whispered. Then raised his voice slightly. “I was trained from birth. Mother and grandfather wanted me to be the heir. The perfect heir. I was taught every conceivable way to kill, to torture, to withstand any injury.” Damian was no longer looking at Natasha. His eyes showed that he was in another place. Another time.
“We were chained to the bed at night to prevent escape,” Natasha replied. “Sometimes they would make us fight to the death. To weed out the unworthy.”
“Weakness was not tolerated. The moment I made a mistake I was punished. I was to take it willingly.”
“When we trained with guns, they gave us real people to use as targets.”
“Emotions were a liability. I was to never show any, I was never to trust anyone. Not my trainors, not my servants, especially not my own mother.”
“We weren’t to trust each other either. Sometimes they would randomly order to kill your friends, and you had to. Otherwise you were killed.”
Damian sighed. “The worst part was leaving. Mother dumped me with Father - for training she said. I was to learn what I could from him. And I did, I learned a lot. But not what she wanted me to.” He looked over wistfully at his family. “I learned to trust. I had to believe I wasn’t invulnerable. I … I had to learn what it felt like to be … wanted .”
Natasha nodded at him, though he wasn’t looking at her. “Clint was sent to kill me, after I had been an operative for a while. I was the best, so people began to take notice. So S.H.I.E.L.D. sent Barton to eliminate me. But when he found me, he didn’t. He … had mercy on me. Something I had never known. He recruited me. I worked with him, and S.H.I.E.L.D. to help people instead of killing them. I had to relearn almost everything.”
They sit in a comfortable silence for a while. Neither bothering to pity the other. Just enjoying the companionship of another like them.
Then Nat spoke up again. "I'm not good with …" Natasha paused trying to find the right words. "Comfort. But, I understand"
Damian looked at her, then nodded. “I understand as well.”
They sat together for a while, looking at the game progressing. They talked about their lives, and even started to explain their families as well. Damian talked briefly about Bruce’s tragic childhood experiences, as well as Dick’s. He went into detail of Jason’s death and then resurrection. Tim’s becoming Robin. His neglectful family. Damian explained Cassandra’s past, and how Duke lost his parents. He mentioned Stephanie and Barbara, and how they joined the vigilante life as well. He didn’t go into detail, though, saying that their stories were not his to tell.
In return, Natasha talked about befriending Clint. How Steve became Captain America. How Tony built his suit. Banner’s experiments, and how he became the Hulk. How Thor found himself on Earth. What she knew of Peter, and how he became Spiderman.
“Do you trust me?” Damian asked, looking over at Nat when she had finished speaking.
Natasha smiled. “Yes. I’m assuming that’s what your goal was?”
Damian had the nerve to not look apologetic. “We may or may not have overheard your entire conversation after lunch.”
Nat nodded, she had figured as much. The Boy had been almost a bit too loose lipped in the beginning. But she could tell that as the conversation went on, he spoke freely because he wanted to, and not because he was trying to supply info.
“Did you draw the short straw?” Natasha asked.
Damian scowled. “T-t, no. Father said that if any of you were to question us or our motives, we should hold nothing back. You had the nerve to approach me first.”
Natasha laughed freely and ruffled the boy’s hair. He frowned, but didn’t push her hand away.
“Do you trust me now?” He asked, tentatively.
Natasha paused and tilted her head. “Yes, I think I do. You didn’t lie to me, I know that.” Damian rolled his eyes, and Natasha smirked a bit. “But also, you and I are similar. I don’t think I could distrust you if I tried.”
Damian nodded, seemingly satisfied. “Good, I would not want to disappoint Father.”
Natasha smiled. “I don’t think he would be disappointed if I didn’t trust you. He seems quite reasonable.”
Damian outright snorted. “Say that again when I have a slight cold and he won’t let me on patrol. He can be quite unreasonable in mother-hen mode. Not unlike Grayson, unfortunately.”
Nat chuckled. “He loves you. That’s important.” There was another shout of victory from the field, then Natasha continued. “What about me? Trust goes both ways, you know.”
Damian frowned in concentration. “Yes, I believe you have earned some trust. I don’t know about Stark though, he seems … unstable.”
Natasha couldn’t help but outright laugh at that statement. After a moment of surprise, Damian joined in.
“That,” Natasha said between huge gasps of laughter, “Is by far the best thing I have heard in a long time.”
“Do you deny it?” Damian asked.
Natasha was almost crying from laughter. “No, not in a million years.”
Damian smiled at Nat. “Thank you, Romanoff. For talking. I believe you will make a valuable ally.”
“Call me Natasha, kid. Or Nat. Or Tasha. I don’t care. But not Romanoff. Friends aren’t so formal.”
Damian furrowed his brows for a moment before relaxing. “Very well, Tasha. We are now friends?”
Natasha smiled at Damian. “If you want to be.”
The boy pet Titus for a few thoughtful moments. “Very well. I accept. Together, we shall be a formidable force.”
Nat chuckled, ruffling the kid’s hair once again. This time, he didn’t bother frowning.
Just then, a voice called from the field. They both looked over to find Dick running up to them. “Dami! I’m so sorry! I thought someone had gotten you out! Well, the game’s over. Want to join in the next round?”
“T-t. Of course you forgot. If this had been in the field, I could have been killed by now.”
Dick smiled easily at his little brother. “So, what do you say?”
Damian glanced at Nat before replying. “Very well, I shall partake once again in your childish games, Grayson.” Then he smirked. “But I demand that Tasha be on my team. Since you are clearly untrustworthy.”
Dick looked curiously over at Natasha, a small smile on his face. “Sure Lil’ D. Let’s go.”
He motioned for the pair to follow him, then turned and ran off back toward the field.
Damian looked over at Nat. “You will be on my team?” He looked like he was trying to hide how hopeful he was.
Natasha got up and offered her hand to Damian. “Together, we shall be a formidable force, right?”
Damian grinned at her and accepted her hand. “Our reign of terror shall be legendary.”

Longfic Recs
So, over in fictional_fans, melannen is doing a collaborative set of longfic recs for while we're all staying inside and physically isolated from one another.  Here's my first set of contributions.  Almost all of these are over 50k, and many of the ones who say they're shorter are just the first stories in their series.  But there are a few shorter ones that I couldn't not rec.

Okay, for everyone calling Cassandra Cain a "racist Asian stereotype" or the like. Please shut up. Cass isn't a "silent emotionless killing machine" she is a girl who grew up in a horrible enviroment, suffered horrible trauma at a young age and didn't have anyone who actually cared for her, until she was well into her life. She was raised by her father, David Cain, to be a weapon. He tortured and dehumanized her to turn her into the perfectly obidient weapon. He never taught her to speak, leading to her brain developing differently. She learned to read even the most miniscule body language. She took her first life when she was only 8. Seeing the mans body language as he died, the agony he was in, because of her. It deeply traumatized Cass, she vowed to never kill or allow someone to die if she could help it. She ran away, living alone on the street. She was a mute girl with PTSD, living on the street since she was 8! Years later, she was found and taken in by Batman and Barbara Gordon. Barbara took a shine to Cass, and became like a surrogate mother to her. She began teaching her to read snd talk. Barbara was the first person to truly care for Cass and treat her like a person. Its never stated what disability Cass has, but the commonly accepted theories are autism and/or dyslexia, and PTSD. Even when she was mute, Cass was still a deeply emotional character. Cassandra Cain is a complex, amazing character who suffered through horrible torture all her life, only to rise above it and become a hero. She is not a racist stereotype. She is not a silent badass killing machine. And Birds of Prey, it took all that away. It took away the trauma she suffered through, her complete hatred of killing, her connection to Barbara Gordon. It took away everything that makes her Cassandra Cain

Guide to writing Cassandra Cain
I’ve seen a lot of people in the Bat Family fandom say that they often minimize or exclude Cassandra from their works because they don’t know enough about her. While I HIGHLY recommend reading her Batgirl comic from 2000, I’ve compiled a guide to her personality, abilities, and relationships with other DC characters here for easy reference. (I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as possible, but I’ve probably forgotten something so please feel free to add onto this if you know the character well)
PERSONALITY
Cassandra has a difficult time with language, spoken or written. This generally manifests through her relying on body language and single-word sentences to get her point across. When she needs to speak, it is halting and awkward, but not broken. She will pause frequently, mumble, or use Malapropisms, but she is a perfectionist and is frustrated when she doesnt use perfect grammar or pronunciation. At times she will be unable to find the words for a particular thought. She usually is portrayed as being unable to read or write.
Cass sometimes uses mimicry when she has trouble putting words together herself, quoting films, tv shows, and plays.
Cassandra is compassionate above all else. She values life, and protecting it is her highest priority. She will not hesitate to put herself in danger to save others, and does not tolerate killing.
Cassandra has a strong guilt complex. Anyone who dies on her watch weighs heavily on her conscience, even if there was nothing she could’ve done to stop it. She does not let go of these “failures” easily.
Cassandra has little regard for societal norms and expectations. While generally caring and compassionate, she often comes across as rude due to spending most of her life either locked in a bunker or surviving in the wilderness. This includes poor table manners, a tendency to lurk in the shadows, and mirroring her adoptive father’s habit of coming and going without warning.
Cassandra has great pride in her physical prowess, but little in her moral character. Though she has a strong moral code and is quick to intervene when others break it, she does not see herself as above them and may even have more faith in them than in herself, as she still feels that she may not be able to rise above her upbringing. She can be rather arrogant about her superior agility and combat prowess, however.
Cassandra is fond of friendly jibes and snark, usually but not always expressed nonverbally. Her sense of humor is slightly unconventional, but usually good-natured.
Cassandra wears her heart on her sleeve. She is very emotional, and her past trauma can make her emotionally vulnerable, especially because of her lack of communicative skills. Her emotions show through her entire body, even when she doesn’t vocalize them.
Cassandra is quick to leap before looking, but excellent at adapting to unexpected situations. She is a poor planner and rather impulsive, with a rebellious streak that sometimes makes it hard for her to listen to instructions. However, she is great at thinking on her feet and analyzing her situation in the moment.
Cassandra does not do things in half measures. When she wants to learn something, such as reading or detective work, she is eager to dive into the deep end even if it’s not always the best way to approach it. As mentioned before she is also a perfectionist when it comes to herself, so this approach often leads to frustration.
Cassandra is very physically affectionate, with little mind for personal space. This often comes in the form of gently touching the face of someone she believes to be in pain.
Cassandra is extremely empathetic, to the point that it can be overwhelming for her at times. She is very good at spotting falsehoods, hidden pain, etc.
Despite this, she often misinterprets social cues. For instance, when Barbara and Dick were going through a rough patch in their relationship, she though Dick had intentionally done something to hurt Barbara, and threw him out a window.
ABILITIES
Cass is fast. Really, really fast. She can move incredibly quickly and quietly, making her very hard to track.
Cass has a shocking amount of strength for her small size. She has punched through 3-inch thick quartz glass, kicked down concrete walls, and thrown a metahuman more than twice her size without issue.
Her primary advantage comes from her ability to read body language and predict her opponents’ actions, allowing her to dodge bullets and outmaneuver pretty much any non powered opponent. This ability does not work on robots, animals, or sufficiently nonhuman aliens.
Cassandra is a contender for the world’s best martial artist, along with Lady Shiva and Richard Dragon. She can pick up new fighting styles nearly instantly, allowing her to learn and adapt techniques she’s never encountered before.
Cass is an incredible acrobat, though not as good as Nightwing.
Cass is able to control the amount of force she uses to the point that she doesn’t usually have to worry about killing even when using normally lethal techniques.
She is able to use pressure points to paralyze someone nearly instantly, though she has only shown the ability to use it on those who do not expect her to attack.
She can stop a person’s heart using a special technique, and in later appearances was able to do so without endangering the person for a good length of time, though they’d still die if not revived within that time period.
She is very good at analyzing her surroundings, which has helped her solve cases.
Cassandra is exceptional at dividing her attention and energy, able to coordinate herself to the point that government agents assumed she was a metahuman.
She is very good at the intimidation side of the job, able to terrify even trained killers.
RELATIONSHIPS
Cassandra is very close to Stephanie Brown, who was her first real friend. She can be a bit overprotective of her, even using violence to keep her out of fights that Cass thinks will be too much for her, though she has largely grown out of that and these days has a lot more faith in her. Cassandra is able to unwind with Stephanie in ways that she has trouble doing with around other people, even those she trusts like Barbara and Tim. When Stephanie seemingly died, Cassandra was deeply affected, becoming shorter-tempered and more violent.
Cassandra sees Barbara as the mother she never had, and values her insight. Though she often chafes at Barbara’s well-intentioned attempts to get her to see beyond her life as Batgirl, she still cares deeply for her.
Cass sees Bruce as somewhat of a father figure as well as a bit of an idol, and seeks his approval. When she believes that she has disappointed him, it can be devastating for her. However, she also recognizes his pain and trauma, and sympathizes strongly with it. Her admiration also doesn’t always mean she’ll do what he says.
While Cassandra and Dick don’t always get along (as mentioned earlier), she usually sees him as a mentor and big brother, and she is often more relaxed around him than most people.
Cass and Jason’s interactions have been largely confrontational, and it’s likely that further encounters would be similar, as she is strongly opposed to lethal force and would endeavor to stop him if she could. That said, she would almost certainly understand the pain he went through, and would try to get through to him with words as much as she is capable, rather than immediately resorting to violence.
Cass and Tim have a long and complicated history. While the two of them started off rather tense, with Tim being somewhat intimidated by her, they soon grew very close, and treat each other as siblings. Their strengths complement each other, and they are able to work in synch with each other very well. She has also been known to break into his house to steal food and take a shower.
Like Jason, Cass’s interactions with Damian are few and far between. Their first meeting didn’t end well, as Cassandra pulled him from a building when he was disarming a bomb despite his protests that he could handle it. While she found some of what he said hurtful, she didn’t seem to hold much of a grudge, and I think they could find common ground due to their similar backgrounds.
Cassandra and Duke seem to be friends, though beyond that little is known of their relationship.
Cassandra is close with Harper Row, and the two of them definitely care for one another despite the troubled history between them.
Cass and Jean-Paul Valley bonded quickly over their shared inexperience with society, and they are both very fond of one-another.
Cassandra is friends with Dinah Lance, who she has been shown to train with on occasion.
Cass does not get along with Helena Bertinelli for obvious reasons, and when they worked together during the Battle for the Cowl there was quite a bit of tension between them.
Cassandra had a close relationship with Basil Karlo/Clayface during the time that he had reformed, as she had faith in his ability to change. His apparent death devastated her.
Her relationship with her biological father is complicated. Though she has always despised what he does for a living, it took a long time for her to come to terms with how badly he treated her.
Cass’s relationship with her biological mother is even more complex. In most depictions, Cassandra respects Shiva in some ways, but is also troubled by all of the lives that she’s taken.

tw: death,
BIOGRAPHY ::
you’re more alike to your birthmother than you will ever know, you have her smile, her walk. that’s what bruce would tell you if you were to ever ask him. you don’t. you feel enough of her ghost on your shoulders without having more information about her. you know a name that is all you want from the woman who left you first.
you are left on the steps to wayne manor. sometimes when you’re sad you like to picture what alfred’s face looked like when he found you out there in january cold. you stay with there for two months. there are photos of you with your siblings. dick kept one for years it would seem. still even here where you’re supposed to be safe, you only last for so long before you’re sent away again.
mr and mrs robbins gave you the best childhood that they could, and for awhile the pain of your origins are tucked away neatly in a draw that you don’t open very much. instead you excel at your education, throwing yourself into dance lessons enjoying the moments you could snag with your parents (they were busy people, you learnt very quickly not to hold it against them).
still things become harder as you get older, you’re the odd one out at that fancy school  you attend. thought you’re not sure how they first found out. here is the first appearance of the fighter inside of you. it will be harder for you to ignore things now. your parents are called several times because you had lashed out at the people who had refused to leave you alone. you are told that were it not for your parents standing in the school community you would have likely been expelled. you are still incredibly proud of that black eye.
you take up martial arts as a compromise, with the understanding that you will behave in a manner more befitting your station in public. the fighting doesn’t really stop you just learn to mask your behaviour. a real sign that you are your fathers daughter.
at sixteen you’re sneaking into clubs making a name for yourself in the new york club scene. you only learn later that photos of you drunk and throwing up into a gutter are only going to undermine you later.
your parents passing in a mutant rights demonstration changes everything, throwing you into a world you’re not ready for. people want you to be an adult, but your nothing more than a child in your mother’s shoes. trying so hard but failing so fast. you easily see the bad sad of humanity, despite the fact that you come out relatively unscathed. it changes you, your angry and most importantly lonely. feelings that really wouldn’t go away.
the loneliness of being alone opens up things you had tidied away years ago. who were your birth parents? why did they give you up ? stupidly it would seem in hindsight you were trying to fill the space left by your parents with people you didn’t even know.
when the name on the test reads bruce wayne it stops everything. the first emotion you really remember is confusion. it was supposed to be someone you didn’t know, someone you could put behind you rather than someone who had been in the background for your entire life.
the first time you go to the mansion after the reveal you yell and scream as loud as your lungs could manage. how could he do this to you?? give you up to people who would manage to rip you apart. he hadn’t known, he couldn’t have, but you blame him for it anyway. him and them, the mutants that cause the accident, they’re the only ones you could, even as your brain tells you it’s stupid.
you remember telling him that you want nothing to do with him but even that doesn’t last too long. you move into the manor eventually, after digging your heels in and demanding to know everything. you find out about batman around the same time. the truth about your father, and as much as he knew about your mother.
that first year is hard, you are ripped from your life in new york and placed in a home that isn’t yours. the people in it are aching doing their best to heal from things that don’t involve you, and yet again you are unwanted by the majority a complication they don’t need.
still not everything in your life is bad, you are alive and for what it’s worth you have more family then you’ve ever had before. jason is the first to really make you feel at home. alfred assures you that the others will come around in time, you aren’t so sure.
taking up the cowl was technically dick’s idea, though you couldn’t become batgirl without permission from babs. just like everyone else in your family the bat becomes an outlet for your anger, a way to enact change and for a year you love it. you make the mantel your own and in some ways you’ve never felt more alive then you do in gotham at night.
just like everything else in life however it is possible to outgrow the hero antics and at nineteen you are more than ready to be something more than just batman’s sidekick. so you follow your heart and you leave. the next few years are a bit of lost time. you travel a lot (you parent’s money lets you) never really staying in one place for too long. still that doesn’t mean you don’t try for some form of stability. england is your favorite, grey skies and cups of tea, but somehow you always end up back in the states. especially after things there end badly. you get your heart broke and you can’t see the direction your pointing in anymore.
how predictable that you’d end up in new york again, some days feeling like you’d never even really left at all. still this time your not some wealthy girl. you’re enrolled in the police academy, you work your ass off and you’re on the streets by the time your twenty seven. it’s the perfect balance for you between the rush you used to get as batgirl but also working within the law. you can’t help but enjoy the fact you don’t need to cover your face.
still you’ve picked up a habit of moving on: new york, star city, gotham you’ve worked in each of them. paragon was an odder choice, after so long running from your family, your birth father’s legacy, but at the same time it feels like a good way of touching base for a while. besides, with everything that goes on in town, it’s probably a good idea to have a cop on hand who actually knows how the hero gig works.
FACTS ::
addy still dances but it’s more as a stress relief than anything close to professional.
her entire life goal (when it comes to the batkids) is to be considered the cool aunt though the extent to which that actually is questionable.
she has two cats toodles (x) and watson (x) and they’re her favorite thing in her whole world.
she functions entirely on caffeine, yes she knows it’s bad but it’s not a habit that she can see herself breaking.
a massive disney nerd!! she’s not sorry for it.

Collisions in the Dark (Ch 14): Post-Mortem
Pairings: Tim Drake/Jason Todd (one sided), Tim Drake & Cassandra Cain, Dick Grayson & Tim Drake, Dick Grayson & Jason Todd
Summary: The family returns home but nothing has turned out the way it was supposed to. In the wake of Tim’s ultimate decision, his relationship with Jason fractures, perhaps beyond any hope of repair.
Chapter Notes: Post Mortem: Analysis of a game after it has concluded, typically by one or both players and sometimes with spectators contributing as well.
“The heart beats, and beats, and beats. This is something you forget. He will not touch you, and you cannot see violence in this light. That is night, softened blows and knife edge turned petal. (He swears it is a flower, will always be. But you would not be here, if you thought the same.) You are unsettled by pleas from a dead boy you keep alive.
Wrap a rope around everything in your possession, are you in control, or is it meant to be tied to the bed of a truck, to be chased down the highway and run over, over, all pretense left for dead.
Are you wringing yourself dry again? Now? The day has just learnt your name, you cannot take back what was given away. Not when it is this. Stay, you are told. As if you could leave him.” — “ Home ”,  T.W
Tim blinked his eyes open. His cheek rubbed against the cool fabric of a pillow pressed up against the side of his head. He pushed up from the soft mattress he’d been laid out on, instantly regretting it as all of his aches made themselves known to him. He grimaced and looked around the room. He wasn't in the cave and he wasn't in his room.
Tim squinted at the window through the bright glare of the sun. From the low view he guessed he was in a spare room on the first floor of the manor.
The wood floors creaked and Tim turned to see Bruce standing in the doorway. He smiled when he saw Tim was awake. Tim combed out his bed head self-consciously, unsure of what to say to him after so long.
He settled for something simple, hoping Bruce would pick up the slack.
“Hey.”
Bruce didn’t disappoint.
“We thought we should move you to somewhere more comfortable than the cave, but we wanted you close to medical supplies in case something came up.”
“Did anything come up?”
Bruce’s smile waned. “No. If you were injured before, well… the Lazarus pit took care of it.”
The only thing it healed for Tim was a broken heart. He guessed that counted. The thought of Jason had Tim swinging his legs over the side of the bed.
“Is Jason—”
Bruce rushed forward to stop him with a hand to his shoulder. “He’s with Dick. Resting. You should too.”
Tim leaned back into the bedding. He got the feeling he was being confined to his room and it sure wasn’t for his own well-being. “Is there something we need to talk about?”
Bruce hesitated. After a moment he sat on the edge of the bed. When his hand rested on Tim’s knee, Tim’s gut shrank in on itself. Bruce didn’t do fatherly pats unless he was truly concerned.
“Jason’s been a bit on edge since we got back to the cave.”
“That’s understandable.”
After all, Jason had just come back from the dead. Again. Tim felt like he was crawling out of his skin, himself. He remembered the last look he’d gotten of Ra’s. His expression had been full of such fury that Tim half expected to see him looming over him when he woke up. He still couldn’t believe that he was free of him. He wasn’t naive, however, he knew it would only be a matter of time before he saw signs of the Demon Head’s presence in Gotham.
Bruce cleared his throat. “He said that he doesn’t want to see you right now.”
That… was not so understandable to Tim. He didn’t want to see him? Even though Tim was the one that he’d gone through all of that shit with? He didn’t want to see Tim, the boy that he said he loved?
Tim tried to be understanding, but that really hurt.
Tim swallowed. “Alright, I guess.”
Bruce squeezed his knee. “Just give him a few days.”
Tim rubbed at his jaw and shrugged. “Yeah, yeah. No I get it. I just thought that he’d want to talk about…” His eyes flashed uncertainly to Bruce and then back to the bedding before finishing lamely, “ things.”
“Maybe we should talk about some of those things . We’ll debrief your mission here.” said Bruce.
Tim had never wanted to bolt for the door more than he did in that moment. He knew that was juvenile, however, so instead he shifted uneasily and forced himself to ask, “Ok. What do you want to talk about?”
“Did you kill anyone while on mission?”
“No.”
Lie , he thought. He’d killed Jason. He knew it wasn’t rational to think that, that it didn’t make sense since he’d done everything in his power to keep Jason alive, but he couldn’t shake his feelings of guilt no matter how hard he tried.
He tried to focus back on Bruce’s clear voice as he asked the next question.
“Was your true identity compromised in anyway while on mission?”
He hadn’t really thought when Bruce said ‘debriefing’ he actually meant debriefing. Honestly, though… he should have known better by now.
Tim rubbed at the back of his neck and looked up at Bruce through his hair. “Are these really the questions you want to ask me right now? You literally just battled Ra’s al Ghul to save my ass and you’re… ”
Tim cut himself off with a shake of his head.
Bruce paused and sat up straighter on the bed. “Is there something you think I should be asking you?”
Tim didn’t want to start anything he wasn’t prepared to finish. And he wasn’t sure he’d hold up in any kind of argument in his current state.
Tim sighed and answered Bruce’s last question.
“No, my identity was not compromised. Jason and Ra’s already knew me as Tim Drake. I didn’t give my name to anyone else while there.”
He told himself that Nyssa al Ghul didn’t count. She was an ally and like all of the members of the Al Ghul family, she already knew his name.
“Do you feel like you participated in anything unethical while completing your mission?”
Tim closed his eyes, his brow crinkling together. He tried to keep his emotions in check, but Tim couldn’t help himself at that one. He gave a soft laugh.
Tim flashed Bruce a cynical smirk when he stared in confusion at his adopted son. “I’m not really sure how to answer that one. What qualifies as unethical, exactly, when your mission is to sleep with your enemy to gain his trust and his secrets?”
Bruce’s mouth tightened. No doubt with disapproval at Tim’s tone.
“Did you break any laws?”
Tim shrugged. “Vigilantes break the law all the time. Vigilantes sleeping with ecoterrorists break it a lot more. I think you should rephrase the question.”
“Are you angry with me for something? If I remember correctly, this mission was your idea not mine. And let me also remind you that you were the one to suggest bringing Jason into this. Not me.”
That had Tim’s words catching in his throat. He blames me for Jason’s death. He’d never say that to my face, but he’s definitely thinking it.
“Could you blame me for wanting him there? For wanting any ally on my side? If I hadn’t suggested it, you would have sent me in there alone. And that’s the problem, isn’t it? You have no understanding of what this mission was like for me. Yes, I suggested it, but really what choice did you leave me? You knew I wouldn’t stand by and let civilians die.”
“I don’t understand. You have all the training you need to run a solo mission. How is this any different?”
Tim cracked. He couldn’t believe something like this had to actually be stated.
“Because he scares me, Bruce! I shouldn’t have had to ask Jason in the first place! Not on a mission that requires me to sleep with the man that has made it his mission to dominate me. You should have cared enough about my safety to send someone in with me right after I told you my plan!”
“If you had concerns, Tim, you should have said something. I’m sorry that I didn’t pick up on how this was affecting you, but what I did, or did not do, was because I was trying to minimize any damages in the future. And my actions don’t change the fact that you involved Jason in this mission and then engaged in a relationship with him that endangered the outcome of the mission and Jason’s life.”
Tim wanted to ask him how he knew about their relationship, but then he remembered.
Dick.
Dick was with Jason. He could get anyone to open up. Tim’s eyes narrowed. “At the time, my relationship with Jason was nothing more than a one night stand. The only thing it endangered was Ra’s’ pride when he realized that I was attracted to someone younger than him.”
Bruce seemed to take a long moment to digest that information. “Tim, what happened between you and Ra’s?”
Tim fixed his eyes on the closed bedroom door. It was easier to remain expressionless if he stared at a slab of wood. “You know what happened.”
“No, I don’t. Your encounters with Ra’s al Ghul have almost always occurred in private. Where you two stood in regards to each other, I can’t know unless you tell me.”
Tim’s eyes slid to Bruce’s, his expression callous. “You’re not naive, Bruce. You know what he wanted from me and it wasn’t just a second in command.”
“Was he sexual with you?”
Tim emitted a derisive noise low in his throat but made no further attempt to answer the question.
Bruce had spent years gathering information of Ra’s. He knew the way that Ra’s thought just like Tim did. Tim wasn’t stupid enough to think Bruce hadn’t done some investigating on Ra’s’ house calls at Tim’s apartment either. There had been tampering with the code of Tim’s security system in the past. Instances where the video feeds had been accessed from outside sources after particularly dangerous patrols. Tim had suspected Oracles involvement long ago, as her own way of checking up on him from time to time. He’d just never thought she might be doing it under Bruce’s orders.
“If you don’t want to talk to me, there are always other options. I could schedule a meeting with Leslie. That way you can open up about what happened and only the necessary information will be relayed to me—”
“I don’t want to talk about this right now.” Tim’s eyes focused on the closed door again.
“I really believe talking to her will help you deal with this, Tim. It’s important to—”
“I said I’m not talking about this now.” He pushed as much force into the words as he could, but couldn’t bring himself to look at Bruce’s face. He didn’t want to see what Bruce thought of him in that moment. Did he think Tim was damaged goods? Was he wondering if he should allow him back into the field after this?
Bruce paused and Tim could see his nod out of the corner of his eye. “Okay, whenever you’re ready. Just try to rest for now.”
Tim did rest. He slept for long hours and unconsciousness was almost enough of a distraction to keep his thoughts off of Jason and Ra’s. Thoughts about both men were painful to him with questions full of ‘what ifs’ and ‘whys’ filling his head to the point of breaking.
It took two days for Tim to work up the energy to venture out of the room, the thought of speaking to his family members too exhausting for him to contemplate. The only person Tim really wanted to talk to was Jason. It seemed like after spending so much time under Ra’s’ scrutiny, they’d learned to convey their feelings without words. Through the small things, like the way their hands brushes together or the twitch of Jason jaw when he got angry… Tim felt like he could read Jason so clearly at this point, without anything needing to be said. But most of all, Jason was someone he didn’t have to explain himself to. And Tim had a feeling Bruce had been just a teaser for what was to come. Dick was sure to bombard him with question and concern for his well-being. He’d come to check in on Tim the other day, but Tim had feinted sleep until he left. He knew it was cruel, but so was Dick reporting on Tim and Jason’s private lives back to Bruce. He had no right disclosing that information.
In truth, the experience hadn’t been as bad as Tim had thought it would be. No one seemed to be in a talkative mood. Bruce and Damian had been working longer patrols since Tim and Jason had gone undercover, getting in late and sleeping even later. Dick was busy checking in on everyone, as was Alfred, though that was nothing new.
Tim entered the kitchen and was surprised to see Cass sitting on one of the bar stools. A box of cereal and a carton of milk sat on the counter next to her. When Tim came to a stop at the threshold, she glanced up at him and slowly placed her spoon down.
Tim stared at her, unsure if he needed to say something to her to explain his presence here. She’d been out of the country when he and Jason had gone on mission, but he had no doubt that she’d been kept in the loop incase her assistance was needed.
How much did she know, though? Cass was perceptive. Had she filled in the gaps?
Tim’s fingers fidgeted at his sides, his eyes breaking contact with hers.
After a long moment, Cass slid off of the stool and retrieved another cereal bowl and spoon. She placed them across of her on the counter and picked up her own spoon, eyes focused on the contents of her bowl.
Tim opened his mouth and closed it a second later, kicking himself for his awkwardness. He shook his head once, trying to cast it off of him and sat himself down across from Cass. Tim dumped cereal and milk into the bowl and started to eat.
Tim breathed slowly with his eyes closed, allowing tension he hadn’t realized he’d been holding leave his body. He opened his eyes again and stared at the spoon in his hand, small cereal pieces floating in off white milk.
He placed the spoon down at looked at Cass who’d gone back to reading the Gotham Gazette, lying spread out on the countertop next to her bowl.
As if sensing his eyes on her, she glanced up at Tim through her bangs.
Tim’s mouth pinched into the closest thing to a smile that he could manage at the time.
“Thank you,” he said.
Cass’s eyes softened, crinkling at the corners, but she maintained the quiet silence that had existed before Tim broke it with his two words.
They both went back to their previous tasks and Tim relaxed fully into the silence. He wrapped himself in it, realizing with relief that he would not need to search for words with Cass. Not today. Not until he was ready.
Three days later, Dick came to confess what he’d done to Tim. Tim would have loved to have gotten Jason’s opinion on the matter, but he’d knocked on Jason’s door multiple times without answer. Tim never tried to enter the room on his own, too afraid he’d find the door locked. He couldn’t deal with such an outright statement at the moment. Better to keep up hope even though Jason had not come to see him since he’d woken five days ago.
Now Dick was leaning against Tim’s closed door like he needed it to keep himself upright, spilling his heart out to him.
Tim pulled his knees to his chest under the blankets as he listened and wrapped his arms around them.
“You told Bruce about me and Jason.” He whispered, staring at him. “You told him that I killed him.”
Dick held up a hand. “No, Tim. I would never ever say something like that. I just told him what Jason told me, that you two had slept together. I told him that Jason’s off-book actions at the U.N. building were only because he wanted to protect you. I was just filling in the gaps in your motives.”
Tim’s eyes were wet, his voice raw. “What you told him was that I placed my feelings above the mission. You told him that I failed.”
“Stop it!” Dick snapped, striding across the room. He gripped Tim by his arms and shook him. His eyes were beseeching. “You didn’t fail, do you hear me? You’re allowed to have feelings. You’re allowed to make mistakes. I won’t sit by and watch him do to you what he did to Jason all those years ago. I’m happy that you and Jason got together. I’m happy that you both found comfort in each other.”
Tim shook his head, his eyes watering freely now. “My feelings for him put a target on his back. It feels like I killed him with my own hands.”
Dick pulled him close, pressing his face into his shoulder. He didn’t seem to care in the least that Tim was getting tears and snot on his shirt. His hand stroked the back of Tim’s head. “Listen to me, okay? You didn’t kill anyone. Sometimes people just die, no matter what you do. Jason just died. It wasn’t anyone’s fault.”
Tim gripped Dick’s shirt tightly in his fists. “I can’t blame Ra’s for everything bad that happened. I was a part of it. I’m just as culpable—”
Dick stroked his head and shushed him until Tim fell silent.
“The important thing is you brought him back to us. Alive.” said Dick. “You have to know how much that means to us.”
Tim pressed his forehead to Dick’s chest.
“I know, I do… I just get the feeling that Jason doesn’t want to be back. And I’m the only one he can blame for that. That I know.”
When Tim pulled back enough to look Dick in the eyes, he could see that Dick felt it too.
Tim had brought back a boy more dead than alive.

Batman Vol. 1 #567 - The Mark Of Cain - Part 1
We begin our journey in the middle of Batman’s „No Man’s Land“ storyline and I mean “in the middle of”. We’re in part 3 of a 5-part trade, so let me sum up the basics:
Gotham was hit by a terrible earthquake that did horrible damage to huge parts of the city.
The rest of the US basically said “fuck that cesspool” and quarantined Gotham as a lost cause.
Crime lords like Penguin, Two-Face and Killer Croc now rule the city. Things generally suck for average Joe and Jane.
Batman + entourage (Robin, Nightwing, Oracle, Azrael, Superman, a few others) try to keep order.
With that out of the way, let’s dive into:
Batman Vol. 1 #567 – The Mark Of Cain – Part 1
We get our first shot of Cass, bringing Oracle a really tasty-looking apple. Keep in mind that they are currently in a war zone, so that apple must have been a fucking nightmare to get. Cass’ smile is the cutest thing ever.
Tumblr media
We now get to see what Oracle was teaching her: reading. Poor Cass. Even the simple word “stop” is extremely difficult for her, but Barb is such a patient, encouraging teacher, it’s heart-warming. Unfortunately, the magic is broken in the last panel, where we see Cass looking on sadly as Barb greets and comforts her dad, who has probably been through hell. Safe to say, Cass is probably not from a happy family.
Tumblr media
On her way out, Cass spots a man in a trench coat, which has her hide behind the nearest wall almost instantly. We see why she’s so scared as he ditches the trench coat to reveal a stealth combat suit and a sniper rifle, which he promptly aims at Gordon. Cass decides the best course of action here is to photo bomb the shot and put herself in front of Gordon. Or maybe she phases through him. I don’t know. Her speed lines enter in front of Gordon and emerge from behind him. *shrug* Either way: awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This makes the mysterious sniper drop his gun in shock. He also shrugs off bullets piercing straight through his shoulder, but does not hesitate to snap a pursuing officer’s neck. Rude. We also find out that Batman was burying some of Harvey Dent’s victims and he now has Harv tied to a bed, flipping his coin to see if he might make an exception to his one rule or not (like you’re gonna do it, Bruce…)
We cut to the police station, where Cass tries in vain to tell Gordon through a drawing who tried to shoot him. Things are going nowhere until Barb points out that Cass drew the Mark of Cain. While everyone loses their shit about this guy, Gordon wants to know why Cain, who apparently has a habit of shooting girls, did not shoot Cass. I present this picture without comment, because Cass is epic:
Tumblr media
Gordon tries to lock her and Barbara away in the station, because he doesn’t want either of them to get hurt, except Cass promptly snatches the keys and locks all of them in the room instead. Girl’s got crazy reflexes.
Tumblr media
Good thing, too, because Cain is waiting for her on the other side of the door. He tries to shoo her away, but when she refuses to move, Cain starts shooting the crap out of the door without shooting her. Cass finally has enough of his shit, disarms him, and punches him hard enough to get her fist bloody and trigger a cutscene—I mean flashback, in which we see her punch/kill another dude at the tender age of way-too-fucking-young, while her father looks on like “that’s my girl!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This causes Cass to finally yell “STOP!” at her father, who seems genuinely touched and impressed by her ability to say anything. I would have sympathy with him if this was a natural disorder of hers, but sadly, I read wikis, so fuck you, Cain.
Tumblr media
This is followed by Gordon breaking down the door. Cass sees her father reach for his gun and she knows if she doesn’t do something quick, someone’s gonna die, so she tackles her father through the window to safety, in an ironic echo of how she punched him and then ran away from him in the past. We end this issue with Cass being awesome.
Tumblr media
So, what have we learned from this issue? From what I have seen, these are Cass’ determining traits so far:
Every single page has her emoting like crazy using all of her body. So I’m going to count every picture I posted: Living Emoji: 10
Cassandra can barely speak/read. I will be counting scenes where it’s really relevant/addressed: Aphasia: 3
She is Fast As Lightning: 3
Cassandra seems to be fond of rushing ahead to save lives without waiting for anyone’s approval or confirmation, let alone backup: Fiercely Assertive Protector: 3

Summary: Tim hangs out with the youngest Avenger. A bromance is blooming.
Tim sighed into his mug of coffee. Everyone in his family - minus Stephanie and Babs, since they didn’t live at the manor -  had been gathered in the cave to discuss the ongoing conversation between some of the interdimensional visitors. They - consisting of Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, Steve Rogers, and Tony Stark - seemed to have been really freaked out by some of Jason’s snide comments, and were now discussing if the bats were in fact trustworthy.
Tim blamed Jason for this whole mess. Jason couldn’t hold his stupid tounge, so now Bruce had called everyone - after Cass told him what was happening -  together to spy on their guests and work out a plan.
Their conversation wasn’t that interesting either. It was everyone going back and forth, never changing their own arguments. The most interesting thing that happened was when Stark hopped on a computer and started to do research on them. Not that they found much.
“No way in f*** are we amicable!” Jason exclaimed when the article was brought up and read aloud.
“Aw, you sure little wing?” Dick asked, elbowing Jason.
“T-t,” Damian said, rolling his eyes. “Will you two imbeciles shut up? I’m trying to listen.”
Turns out there wasn’t much more. As soon as the Avengers dispersed, Tim turned off the computer. “Now what?”
Cass frowned. “They need trust. Show them.”
Bruce nodded. “Yes, it would be best if they trust us, as we are the ones sending them home. Lack of trust might provoke unnecessary responses from them. It would be best if we can work well together.”
“Show them.” Cass repeated vehemitaly.
“I agree with Cass,” Tim replied. “We shouldn’t just tell them to trust us. That could be taken quite badly. We need to show them.”
“How?” Duke asked. “I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but you are definitely not good at showing your emotions well.”
Bruce sighed heavily. “Yes, Duke, you have made that abundantly clear in the past.” Duke smiled at that, looking rather sheepish. Bruce frowned in concentration. “Let them make the first move. If they try to question you, don’t hold anything back. Try to be friendly.” Tim noticed he directed that last part at Damian and Jason.
“Don’t hold anything back?” Jason asked, an evil smirk growing on his face. Tim shuddered inwardly at whatever gruesome tale Jason was planning on sharing.
“Within reason,” Bruce growled.
Duke stood up. “Well, that sounds good for you guys, but I have Gotham to patrol.” Duke strolled off with a decidedly self satisfied smile on his face. He clearly thought that he was getting out of sharing his life story.
Bruce sighed once more. “Very well, Duke. Good luck.”
Duke nodded his thanks as he made his way to the changing rooms to get ready for his patrol.
*****
“Dude, this is incredible!” Peter had given Tim a chance to look at his web-shooters, and Tim was being a total fangirl over it.
“Thanks,” Peter replied, seeming quite proud. “The basic design is mine, Mr. Stark supplied some improvements though.”
Tim nodded as he continued to examine the device. “Are these veins turbine pumps?”
Peter grinned. “Yup! They compress the web fluid before shooting it out through the spinneret holes which cold-draws the solution and extrudes it through the air, where it solidifies.”
“And during the process the  nylon gains a four-fold increase in tensile strength?”
“Exactly!”
Tim shook his head at the brilliance. “Wow, this is utterly brilliant!”
“Thanks! Do you want to see the chemical formula?” Peter asked. He seemed really eager to talk about it with someone his own age.
“Of course!” Tim hit his forehead. “Gosh, I’m sorry! I completely forgot you came to me to see if we could make more.”
Peter shrugged, “no worries. I’m glad you like the devices.”
Tim reached over to one of the coffee tables in the sitting room they were occupying and handing it to Peter, who promptly began to write down the formula.
Upon seeing it, Tim gasped uncontrollably. “Oh my god, this is the greatest thing I have seen in a long time!” Peter had to be a genius to come up with this, Tim decided.
Peter grinned at Tim. “Really?”
“Totally!”
“You guys done fangirling?” A voice came from the door. “ ‘cause we have some people to decimate!”
Tim looked over to find Jason leaning against the doorframe, two nerf guns in hand.
“Decimate?” Peter asked.
Jason rolled his eyes. “Capture the flag on the back lawn in five. Bring whatever non-lethal weapons you want. You can get ‘em approved before the game starts.” And with that, he strolled off.
“You guys play Capture The Flag?” Peter looked excited.
Tim stood up, organizing the notes, then setting them aside. “Yup! It can get pretty wild though. Think you can handle it?”
Peter grinned. “I think so.”
*****
“Welcome to the 67th annual Bat Fa-”
“It's not annual and you know it Dick.”
Dick pouted as he looked over at Tim. “Come on, Timbo, let me have this!”
“Drake is correct, Grayson. You are acting idiotically.”
Tim glanced over at Damian. “You’re admitting I’m right?”
Damian glowered at his brother. “Of course not.” “But you jus-”
“Are we playing or not?” Someone had managed to rope Bruce into the game, but he was being pretty snippy about it.
Dick sighed, looking defeated. “Fine. Capture the flag. You all know how to play?” Everyone nodded, except Thor.
“I am unfamiliar with this specific midgardian game.”
Dick nodded. “Ok, that’s fine. Good chance to go over the rules anyway. There are two teams, each take one side of the playing area. So each team has a flag, or item of some sort that they each place in a visible yet defendable position. Part of the team defends their flag, while the other part attempts to steal their opponents’. If you get caught on the opposite team's territory, they put you in jail. Only one of your teammates can get you out, by tapping you. Get it?”
Everyone nodded. “Good. A few extra rules that must be followed,” Dick looked pointedly at Jason and Damian as he continued, “ include: no maiming. Serious injuries of most kinds are off limits. Lethal weapons are also out, unless you know how to use them nonlethally. You are also not allowed to leave the playing area at any point. Nor are you allowed to use cookies as bait in any traps. Especially Alfred’s cookies.”
Dick looked pointedly at Tim during the last rule, much to Tim’s chagrin. It had been one time!
“And finally, no touching Alfred’s shrubbery.” Everyone with the exception of the Avengers cringed at that. “Everyone understand?”
There was a chorus of “Yups” “Yes’s” and “f*** yeah, b****!” Tim didn’t need to be the world’s second greatest detective to guess where that last one came from.
“Good,” Dick said, grinning. “We’ll have two teams. Captains are Bruce and me. Let’s get into a line and start dividing.”
Tim got in line, grumbling slightly. A few of the Avengers had also joined, specifically Peter, Thor, and Banner. Tim wasn’t sure how much of a help Banner could be without “Hulking out” as Peter put it, but the guy seemed smart. It seemed like it would be an interesting game.
“Lil’ D!” Dick called, quite predictably. Damian grumbled and walked over to Dick’s side.
Bruce took longer to choose. He examined the faces of each person, one by one. “Tim.” Tim smiled, he had been expecting Dick to choose him, but with Bruce, Tim didn’t have to deal with the demon brat.
Dick chose Thor next, then Bruce chose Jason. They continued back and forth till Dick’s team consisted of Damian, Thor, and Banner. Bruce had chosen Tim, Jason, and Peter. Cassandra had opted to Referee the game, much to everyone’s relief. They could play everyone against Cass, and his sister would still win.
“Flags?” Cass asked once everyone had assembled with their teams.
“I got these from Alfred!” Dick said as he grabbed two large banners from beside a tree. One was Green, the other Blue.
Cass nodded. “You get Blue. Bruce, green.” Once Dick had handed the other banner to Bruce, Cass continued. “Ten minutes to plan and hide flags. Then go.”
They split up, Tim following right behind Bruce. “Ideas?” he asked when they were all in the cover of the trees that they had chosen for their side.
“The flag will go up in the old oak tree, as high as you can get it, Peter. I want Jason on Guard Duty near the tree, I’ll be farther out doing a border patrol. Tim and Peter, you’re both on infiltration duty. Skirt the sides as much as possible. Dick will most likely be trying to cross over, avoid him if you can. Watch out for Damian, too. He'll be joining Dick. Thor will most likely be guarding their flag along with Banner. He won’t be able to resist the pun. They should be pretty easy to take down.” Bruce paused for a moment, thinking. “Dick will probably place his banner somewhere near the westward fountain. Use the ivy wall to the east as cover.”
Everyone nodded, and separated. Peter scrambled up the oak tree with ease, and placed the banner at the literal top. It’d be almost impossible for anyone to reach it, but Tim knew Dick would love the challenge.
A couple minutes later, the guard routes were established, and Tim had shown Peter the way to the flag by drawing a diagram in the dirt. Tim quickly wiped it away, however, when Cass sounded an Airhorn. Tim had no idea where she had gotten it, but didn’t bother trying to figure it out. Tim sprinted to the side almost immediately, Peter right behind them. They wove through the trees, keeping to the shadows. Peter wasn’t nearly as stealthy as Tim, but they both kept out of sight.
Right as they were about to cross over the border, Tim stopped them. “Let’s get an aerial view before we proceed.”
“Sounds good,” Peter replied as they started to climb a nearby tree. Turns out it was the right choice, because they were awarded front row seats to Bruce grabbing Damian by his collar.
“Not today, Damian. You’re going to jail.” Bruce smiled fondly as he carried his youngest son away from the border and off to the previously chosen prison.
“Grayson!” Damian shreeked. “How dare you abandon me! Unhand me this instant, Father! Grayson! You shall rue the day I make my escape! This insult has not gone unnoticed! I refuse to be kept against my will by plebeians! You had better drop everything to assist me Grayson, or -”
Damian’s outraged voice slowly faded away as he was hauled off.
“Oof,” Peter said. “Think Dick will get him out?”
Tim snorted before shaking his head. “Knowing Dick, he’ll be remorseful for a bit before completely forgetting about the kid.”
Peter nodded. “Well, one less person we have to deal with, right?”
Tim grinned. “Yup! We should probably get going.”
*****
“Mmff! Mfffff-mmmf!”
“I think we did a good job, whattaya say, bug-boy?” Tim and Peter grinned down at a bound and gagged Thor and Banner. Both trying and failing to escape their bonds.
“I think we did quite well, bird-boy.” Peter replied. “But we should probably get going.”
Tim nodded as he plucked the banner from atop the fountain, right where Bruce said it would be.
“Let’s go!” they race off towards the border.
It didn’t take them long for them to reach the wide patch of grass marked with a hastily placed length of rope, but their path was blocked. Thor had managed to get out of Peter’s webs, and chased after them. He stood  facing them, his hammer out, pointing at their chests.
“Halt! I must not allow you any further.”
Tim grinned. “Bet I can take him down first.”
Peter grinned right back. “You’re on!”
Togather, they charged the norse god. Peter was flipped over Thor’s shoulder, shooting his webs out and pulling Thor’s helmet over his eyes, though he quickly pulled it up again. Tim unleashed a flurry of batarangs, which Thor dodged. This, however, set him off balance. Tim activated a smoke bomb, and expertly navigated the limited visuals to attack Thor, who was in the process of throwing Peter to the ground.
When the smoke cleared, Thor was once again on his back, taken down by Tim. Peter was also on his back.
“You okay there, Peter?”
Peter groaned and rolled over. “Yup. You won, though.”
Tim crowed. “Hah! Yeah, I did!” He offered his hand to his downed companion. You did a good job too though. We make a great team.”
Peter stood, and together they crossed over the border holding the banner just as Dick came out of the trees being chased by both Jason and Bruce.
“Aw, crap.” Dick said upon seeing Peter and Tim already back on their own territory.
Almost immediately, Cass appeared. A newly freed Banner also appeared. Well, he limped out of the trees.
“Team Grumpy Wins,” Cass says triumphantly. It took a moment for Tim to realise what she had said.
“Wait, I thought we didn’t use team names?”
Cass smiled and pointed at Bruce. “Grumpy.” She then turned to Dick. “Happy.”
Jason smirked. “That’s an accurate assessment.”
He and Cass high-fived.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Dick said good naturedly. “Good job guys. You up for another round?”
“Different teams this time,” Tim replied.
Dick smiled, “Sounds good! Maybe Dami should lead this time.” Dick’s eyes widened. “Crap! Damian!”
Everyone burst into laughter as Dick sprinted towards Team Grumpy’s jail.
