What would you say are the best Cass issues?
Thank you for your ask, Anon!
Whew, it's been a while since I covered any of Cass's comics, so I don't fully remember what happened in her New 52/Rebirth issues. Thankfully I made a summary of her post crisis issues, which I can now reference, so here are what I consider the best post Crisis Cass comics:
No Man’s Land storyline, starting with Batman Vol 1 #567 (Trade issue 3 of 5, I think)--this is PostCrisis!Cass's origin story and very beautifully done.
Ghost/Batgirl: The Resurrection Engine Vol 1 #1-4. Inconsequential to her overall story, but still a good mini series.
Batgirl Vol 1. This one sadly suffers from Mass Effect syndrom, i. e. turns into garbage on the last page of the final issue, although some people prefer to quit earlier (usually around issue 60 or so when her "looking for my mother" arc really kicks in).
Batman and the Outsiders Vol 2 #1-14 (beware occasionally bad art)
Gates of Gotham Vol 1 #1-5. THE best post Batgirl Vol 1 Cass storyline and basically her reunion with the family after tons of bad writing.
Convergence: Batgirl Vol 1 #1-2 for all your Cass/Steph in the middle of the apocalypse needs.
Also, digging through the last issues of Batgirl Vol 1 made me realize I either never posted my summary of issue 66 or it got purged somehow. I don't want to give people false hope of the blog continuing regularly any time soon though by posting it now.

Who do you think would be a good love interest for Cass? I’m not saying that she needs one, because she’s a bad bitch who doesn’t need anyone, but if she had a love interest, what character would you see in that role? I feel like Cass would be attracted to both boys and girls or even just people in general. I’ve always thought of Stephanie or Harper as her love interest.
Thanks for your ask, ravenbrewer30!
For starters: I agree that Cass does not need a love interest, but if she did have one, they could be any gender, even though we’ve only ever seen her show romantic interest in boys in the comics (at least until September 2018, which is when I stopped posting on this blog--I have no idea what’s happened to her since). As for which characters I could see in that role:
Harper: Definitely not. Cass killed her mom. Even if Harper forgives her for that (I think she did, if I remember correctly), I doubt Cass would forgive herself and I think those two together romantically would make for a huge emotional mess that’s bound to fail sooner or later.
Stephanie: The most likely candidate, imo. Cass lived together with her during the events of Confluence and hallucinated Steph greeting her in the afterlife twice, with one of those times involving a bridal carry. They didn’t start out on the right foot, but the two of them grew very close and I think Steph’s more upbeat character and significant determination would really help getting Cass out of the dark headspace she can be in sometimes.
Connor Kent: The first boy Cass ever kissed. The broke up amicably back then, but I could absolutely see those two getting together a couple years down the line after they’ve both matured emotionally a bit more. Also, let’s face it, Bruce going all Papa Wolf towards Superman over the relationship between those two was hilarious.

Hey, sorry for asking this so long after you finished, but i was wondering if you know anywhere where Cass is referred to as dyslexic because i can't find any. is it just one of these fanon/conventional wisdom things? thanks in advance
Thanks for your ask, doomninja!
Omg, I should really start picking up my sideblogs again. Sorry there haven’t been any posts on this in months. I just haven’t found the energy for it.
Anyway, to the best of my memory, Cass was never referred to as dyslexic in the comics. She does however suffer from aphasia, which is a broader term for language impairment of varying forms and degrees. Cass’ aphasia started out as a complete inability to understand spoken language and severe difficulty speaking even short, single-syllable words. Eventually, a telepath re-arranged her brain so that she could understand spoken language, but reading and writing was still extremely hard for her.
I tagged all mentions of her aphasia as part of my posts, so for a full overview of all mentions of her aphasia (at least until Detective Comics 987), just click here.

Detective Comics Vol 1 987
We begin this issue with Karma and his hired guns killing one Wayne Enterprises employee and taking another hostage. Meanwhile, Batman and Katana explain to the others where Karma got his mind-reading tech from and what exactly it does. When he hears about the hostage-taking, Batman wants to solve the case alone, but Jefferson insists on bringing the team (minus Babs). Things go pretty well at first and they (read: Katana and Cass) manage to take out Karma’s goons without much effort, but after that, Bruce wants again insists on going alone to prove that Karma is wrong. This time, Jefferson lets him go.
Tumblr media
Bruce follows Katana’s advice to let Karma read his mind by providing him with all the horrible memories and it works. Karma is distracted long enough for Bruce to pull of the mask and leave him thoroughly brain-damaged.
The next day, Jefferson accepts Bruce’s request to lead the team under one condition: his normal school and Metropolis come first. Bruce agrees and tells him the team will be called “The Outsiders” and that Jefferson shouldn’t even try to lie to “him” about it. “Him” turns out to be Superman, who flies down to Jefferson and tells him to try not to become like Bruce.
Meanwhile, in Markovia, the arms dealer who sold the mask to Karma sets a plan in motion to kill Batman.

Detective Comics Vol 1 986
We continue two hours from the deadline that Karma posted (either Bruce kills off his teenage sidekicks or Karma kills the kids he kidnapped). Batman hijacks the city networks to broadcast the batsymbol everywhere and Black Lightning decides to take Cass with him to get to rescue the kids, only for Barbara to inform him that she already sent her on the way. Babs then has the stones to be offended when Black Lightning refuses to take her with him instead. Well, outsider or not, Barb, Bruce brought this guy in for a reason and you can’t expect people to trust you when you continually belittle them and go behind their backs.
The original plan of Cass going in solo is spoiled when Batman shows up and tells her to free the kids while he takes down Karma. He’s also jamming all electronic communication in the area to prevent Karma from remote-detonating the bombs that the kids are strapped to, which will also block her communications with Barbara. Despite having just told Barb that she wants to get in Karma’s face, Cass accepts this plan without question and gets to work, which gives us these heart-warming panels you’ve probably seen around tumblr already.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruce confronts Karma (who lost both his eyes and his mind when Bruce left him behind in Markovia) and a battle ensues. Meanwhile, we see just what a brilliant idea jamming those signals was, since Cass knows absolutely zilch about disarming bombs. Turns out Bruce had anticipated this. When he told her to “follow the light”, he had meant follow Black Lightning’s lead. She does and they get the kids out ok. Even better, she then returns and helps Batman and Black Lightning escape before the entire church blows up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, at the cave, Bruce makes it very clear how pissed off he is with the kids, especially Barb, for constantly ignoring Black Lightning’s advice and orders. Barbara leaves in anger (you deserved this one, girl). He tells Black Lightning to bring Duke and Cass up to speed on what Barbara has found out about Karma’s tech and then goes to prepare for his next match with him by training with Katana.

Detective Comics Vol 1 985
We continue with Bruce rejecting Alfred’s suggestion of calling in all the help he can. Instead, he goes on a car ride which jogs his memory of where he has seen the dagger Karma used before. Turns out, many years ago, Batman took down a gunrunner and torturer in Markovia and doused him in Scarecrow’s fear gas in retribution for his crimes, AFTER he was already down for the count. What the hell. Okay, the guy was a scumbag, but this seems excessive for Bruce. The bullshit continues across Gotham in a penthouse Bruce rented for Black Lightning and the kids, where Jefferson tries to find some common ground with Barb, Cass and Duke… and Cass reacts to this with petty insults. What the—Okay, DC counter, you’re up. Dubious Characterization: 3
Tumblr media
Barbara eventually points out that Karma could apparently read Cass’ mind and Bruce doesn’t usually know what’s good for him when he tells everyone to work alone (not to mention, he often expects people to do the exact opposite). Jefferson relents and asks Barb to teach him what she knows. He also goes to have a talk with Alfred, who assures him that Bruce brought him in to be the voice of reason, which Bruce cannot always be.
Meanwhile, Karma kidnaps a school bus full of little kids and a reporter, whom he uses to deliver a message to Batman through the news: if he wants to save the school kids, he has to kill his own children and deliver them to the center of Gotham. What I find morbidly hilarious here is that he is referring to Barbara, Cass, and Damian, rather than the traditional quartet of Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian. In any case, Karma lights the reporter on fire after she’s done with her message.

Detective Comics Vol 1 984
And we’re back to Detective Comics for a bit! We begin with a flashback, in which the villain Karma buys some equipment from a black market dealer in Markovia. Fast forward to the fight between him and Cass, in which he claims her thoughts are pure violence because she is afraid of her own abilities. Cass is not having this bullshit, but eventually Karma breaks her arm (how he is a better fighter than Cass is anybody’s guess – my money is on the Worf Effect). He wants her to team up with him, because she’s better than the rest, but Cass refuses. Little Lady Of War: 19
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Batman welcomes Black Lightning to Gotham. He wants Black Lighting to teach a bunch of the younger generation who have issues equal to their potential, but postpones the talk for an emergency call. The two of them arrive just in time to save Cassandra and she instantly knows who Black Lightning is. Also, apparently her arms is not broken, just dislocated? Comic, please keep your story straight.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Karma manages to absorb Black Lightning’s powers and direct them at Bruce so he can get away. Cass tries to follow, but he manages to escape. They take Bruce back to Alfred and Black Lightning is not amused to learn that he brought several kids into the vigilante thing. Bruce decides that all the kids will have to stand down until Bruce finds out who Karma is and brings him to justice, since he doesn’t want to put any of them at unnecessary risk. He gives Black Lightning a quick run down of the three kids he mentioned (Duke, Cass, and Barbara), mentioning both Cass’ aphasia and her growing relationship with Barbara, but Black Lightning predicts that they won’t listen to him and that they will try to take down Karma. Aphasia: 17
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comic ends with Bruce saying that he’s sorry, but his kids make him weaker. Fuck this comic. Fuck its writers. Fuck this version of Bruce. I was going to give Good Batdad points for genuinely caring about Cassandra, but they have now been officially redacted.

Bombshells United Vol 1 19
Welcome to our last Elseworld Cass story! From here on out, it’s gonna be encyclopedias, card games, videogames and the occasional Rebirth issue, as they are published, so expect less regular updating. For now, on to the grand Bombshells United finale!
We start with Zatanna freeing herself from the powers of Joker’s daughter, the fall of Akropolis and its armies retreating because of… reasons? Is this all because the Kind Beneath The Black went back to sleep? Huh? What just happened here? In any case, the heroes reunite to rejoice in their victory, but also bury the fallen.
Tumblr media
Fifteen years later, Selina and Bruce meet in Gotham. Lois and Supergirl have vanished from Moscow and Bruce warns that a Cold War is coming. He wants to know what became of the Bombshells, so Selina gives him a long update which I’m not going to repeat here now, except for 1) Aruna Shende is back, which is crazy, because I thought DC had completely forgotten about her, and 2) Cassandra and Katana are taking down their respective corrupt governments and rebuilding their countries (China and Japan).
Tumblr media
The list of people who are dead or MIA is actually pretty short. Selina makes a proposal to Bruce: to train him to be a hero too (because in this continuity his parents didn’t die and he never became Batman), so he can help keep the world safe until the next generation is ready. He agrees and so Bruce and Selina head out as Batman and Catwoman.

Bombshells United Vol 1 18
We continue with the bombshells finale. Amanda Waller drops a nuke over Japan to get rid of a powerful Black Lantern corps, but Katana manages to stop it from hitting ground. Harley & Co manage to kill Joker, but his daughter absorbs his powers. She wants to find Katana and make her the next daughter (so… her heir?)
Elsewhere, the other heroines fight of hoards of evil minions, including Cass fighting as Black Bat in China.
Tumblr media
In space, Lex Luthor sacrifices himself to push his evil sister back into the void. Hilariously, the big bad “King Beneath the Black” looks at all this, essentially loses  his interest in conquest, and goes back to sleep. This causes Joker’s daughter to be stripped of her powers, which migrate to Zatanna and turn her evil.

Bombshells United Vol 1 17
We skip ahead to what is actually the first of the last three issues in this series. Cass is only mentioned here, so let’s make the summary quick: A news host on the radio narrates about how the spaceship Akropolis has appeared over the Earth and how heroines all over are fighting either alone or together to stop the chaos, including Cassandra and her “bats of blood and iron”.
Tumblr media
Turns out that our big bad, also called the Queen Above the White, is Lex Luthor’s sister, who was transformed into a superhuman being during an experiment gone wrong. While the heroes call in Supergirl to help them stop her, Joker’s daughter calls upon the “King Beneath the Black” to bring back her father, who apparently reincarnates again and again in this universe. The first victim of the clash turns out to be Steve Trevor, who is killed by Parallax.

Bombshells United Vol 1 6
We have now reached the last of our comic elseworlds, in which we will spend four issues. This is basically an AU in which the DC superheroes appear in the middle of WW2 and which focuses on the female characters. Also, the numbering on this thing is confusing, because it seems like everywhere I go to find a digital copy, the damn thing’s been split in half for each volume, so finding Cass is a bit of a challenge.
Now, I will be completely honest and say that I don’t understand wtf exactly is going on in this issue, except that a new timeline is apparently beginning and the Suicide Squad has been sent to go after Black Canary. The villain Star Sapphire commandeers a pilots body and crashes her plane, which is then found by Jessica Cruz. Dawnstar, who is kind of watching over the timelines, is predicting that there’s only one way the world will survive: if its heroes unite. That includes Cass, who is present as Black Bat:

Batgirl: Futures End Vol 1 1
We begin this installation of the horrible Futures End series with Babs getting married to some random cop two years from now. Her insane brother arrives at the wedding and forces her husband to jump off a building to his death, causing Babara to just hate everything and give up on Batgirl. Fast forward three years and Steph, Cass and Tiffany are working together as “The League of Batgirls” to keep order in Gotham.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other news, Barbara apparently went underground and single-handedly dismantled 70% of Gotham’s crime syndicates within those two years. She also trained with Bane to become as strong as him and ended up taking Venom, which turned her into a wall of muscle called Bête Noire. Bane calls her in her hideout and tells her that her League of Batgirls is not good enough to disarm the six bombs he placed in the city on time (even though he admits Cass is pretty badass) and that she should come and face him for a personal showdown. She leaves a goodbye message that has the Batgirls in tears and goes to fight Bane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bane taunts Barbara saying that she really wants to lose to him so he can put her back in her wheelchair. Barbara rejects this, calling herself Barbara” again for the first time in years and telling him that she never even took his Venom. She became who she is on her own. Babs knocks out Bane and the Batgirls arrive to reunite with her.

Batman: Li’l Gotham Vol 1 1
And I’m back!
This hilariously cute comic describes Damian’s first Halloween in Gotham and Dick (as Batman) trying to teach him how to Halloween, until they accidentally order their pizza from the same place where all the villains are out having dinner. It’s hilarious and cute, but Cass is sadly not in the story proper, only on the cover.

And now we have reached the final issue of Tiny Titans (both for Cass and for the book in general). Cass is not in this story (blasphemy!), only on the cover, so here you go:

Tiny Titans Vol 1 45
Issue 45 begins with the Batgirls having a Batman-approved Batgirl party at the cave. Even Kori and Raven are there in Batgirl suits, with Kori being a lot happier about it than Raven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything’s going well until some kind of cat lady comes in with a soccerball and starts kicking it at people.
Later, we see the Birds Of Prey team under coach Huntress playing soccer against Lobo’s secret six and losing pretty hard. Huntress encourages them to fight back… but it doesn’t end well. The only one who doesn’t come back bruised is Cassandra, who wisely sat this one out and basically goes “I told you so”.
Tumblr media
Things change when Pantha, the cat lady from before, joins the team and promptly mops the floor with the secret six. Coach Lobo agrees to settle things over ice cream. We also find out that the cow team is beating the Robin team 52 to 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third and final match is between the cows and the cave bats, who call in Pantha as their secret weapon, suddenly claiming she’s a bat, even though they spent the entire comic claiming that she wasn’t. Pantha… really does not seem to care, so long as she can whack people with soccer balls.

Tiny Titans Vol 1 43
This issue starts with Robin, Superboy & co. getting the idea of founding their own kind of Justice League. Superboy goes to the Fortress of Solitude and steals one of Superman’s costumes, only to be dragged into the Phantom Zone by Zod… who thinks he’s the pizza boy and just wants to know where the pizza is. Superboy gets rescued from the Phantom Zone by Jor-El.
Meanwhile, Robin tries to borrow Bat Cows cape, only to find out that the cows have formed a JLA of their own. He gets thrown into the kitchen where Barbara and Cass are having breakfast. He tries and fails twice to defeat the cows and Cass just ends up sitting there like “see, this is what I have to put up with”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aqualad is not having much luck with his costume either. Eventually, Miss Martian points her friends at a costume store in town and orders some costumes for them online. They arrive three days later… and it turns out she ordered typical Halloween costumes (clown, cowboy, scarecrow and the like). So much for the mini JLA.
