Today, I ˑ Submitted an assignment for review and completed 25% of one of my self-study courses. ˑ Submitted a short assignment for another self-study course. ˑ Worked on the draft for my motivation letter. ˑ E-mailed the admissions office to ask when the pre-assignments will be published. (In approx. 1,5 weeks!) ˑ Wrote and sent a joke in code to one of my friends, who asked me how I was doing. I then had a snack and realized how I could have made the code prettier during said snack. 👩‍💻

what business do i have doing a studyblr challenge when i have actual schoolwork i could be doing?? in my defense my sleepy brain is giving out and i'm debating whether i should just sleep already (and how i should go about learning this quantum mechanics chapter for chemistry next week because i'm looking at it rn and it makes absolutely no sense and i'm pretty sure it's because i lack some basic understanding of... I don't even know what in the world of physics. If anyone has been through this, what worked for you?)
Day 1: Lets start easy what subject(s) are you studying?
kinda spoiled it already but my entire summer is gonna be eaten up by intro chemistry courses required for my degree. 😃😑
i enjoy it. really, i do! and i'm really grateful for the privilege to get to go to university. but i also don't enjoy not being on vacation or self-studying something! (in particular, the cs courses i started but didn't finish are burning a hole in the back of my mind but i haven't the energy to do them 😮‍💨)

Oh and I finished 4/7 of my tasks for today... Not great, not bad 🤷‍♀️ Always trying again tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...

June recap / July goals
Tumblr media
Hi!
The reason why it took me a while to post this month’s recap+goals is that I didn’t know what to track in July.
I finished all the lessons on HelloChinese, and my RosettaStone subscription ended on the 28th. I had been doing it really consistently and still haven’t quite figured out what to do to replace it... I’m trying out SuperChinese (I remember that I tried it back when I started studying Chinese, but deleted it because I didn’t like it quite as much as HelloChinese and RosettaStone), but I will delete it when I can no longer do lessons for free because I don’t like it so much and it isn’t much better than RosettaStone - if I’m willing to spend that money, I’ll just pay for another year of RosettaStone and finish the lessons there.
I’ve also re-read the beginning of the graded reader “My Summer in China” and I am very very happy that I can actually read it at a normal reading pace now.
I started reading the Mandarin Companion graded reader “The Secret Garden”, and I’m really enjoying it.
The main reason why I still wanted to use a tracker for July is to write books I read, dramas I watch and if I discover any new music I love (leaving “music” blank doesn’t mean that I didn’t listen to any Chinese music, but that I haven’t been listening to anything new).
I’ve just put “breakfast” as a way to track doing some practice during breakfast - a lesson on SuperChinese or... something else. I thought about talking to people on the language exchange app Tandem during breakfast, as a way to use it more regularly, but when I tried that I spent like an hour on it between reading messages, writing replies, putting things through translators... luckily it was a Saturday!
Anyway, let’s see what happens by the end of the month!

One thing I’ve noticed about people in or entering their 30s is they don’t make as many compromises anymore. If someone doesn’t meet them halfway, is not up to standard, is just not where they’re needed to be, they’re just like “ok cool” and they move on from the person. Which is not to say they’re less empathetic or understanding, but more that they have learned that time is their most prized possession and they’re not willing to make massive compromises on it. They are not obsessed w the idea of fixing someone (bc the concept of fixing a person doesn’t really exist). They simply move on to someone who is up to par. I want that. I want to always move w the awareness that time is my most priceless belonging and I can never buy it back. Ever. So I have to use it wisely

What do you call your enemy?
I tried to analyze myself and my problem areas lately and realized several things: There is some part of my brain that has forbidden me success all my life, i.e. quite physically, the moment I am on the rise, my brain freezes and does nothing, or does everything so that no further development takes place. The exceptions were situations where you're in a tough working relationship and you have a lot of responsibility. But what that part is, how to be with it (put up with or brutally destroy) is absolutely unclear to me. The other part, of course, reminds me of all kinds of bad luck all the time. When trouble happens today this creature writes out all the details of the incident with zeal and diligence, and at every opportunity (preferably before going to sleep) reads out loud and clearly all these events. Well, a painful reaction generates new problems. The situation becomes unmanageable, the ground feels cotton and you feel as if you are falling. Who is it? Should I give it a name? Whether to be friends or enemies with it is still unclear to me. I hope I solve this problem somehow, because time is short and I still have a lot to do.

40 Tips For Becoming More Disciplined 📌💡🚀📝
Know what you want to achieve soon and in the future. This helps you know where to go and stay motivated.
Do the most important things first to save time and energy.
Have a daily plan that includes work, rest, exercise, and learning.
Make big tasks smaller so they're not scary, and you can see progress.
Use methods like the Pomodoro Technique (working for a while, then resting) or blocking time to get more done.
Notice when you're avoiding work and make yourself start.
Control yourself from getting distracted or doing things just for fun.
Say no politely when you can't do more things without getting stressed.
Stay healthy by eating well, exercising, and sleeping enough.
Keep learning by reading, taking classes, or trying new things.
Check how you're doing with your goals and change plans if needed.
Tell a friend or mentor your goals so they can help you stay on track.
Keep your spaces tidy to help you focus better.
Learning discipline takes time, and it's okay if things don't go perfectly.
Think good thoughts about yourself instead of bad ones.
Imagine doing well to get motivated.
Mistakes are chances to learn, not reasons to give up.
Be happy about even small successes to stay positive.
Listen to advice from others to get better.
Be ready to change your plans but keep your main goals.
Try mindfulness to concentrate, be calm, and know yourself better.
Write about your progress and plans in a journal.
Turn off things like social media when you work or study.
Think about things you're thankful for to stay happy.
Do quick tasks right away instead of waiting.
Spend time with people who help you and make you want to be better.
Let others do tasks that you don't need to do, so you can focus.
Get better at handling problems without giving up.
Picture doing well to stay motivated.
Drink water to think clearly and stay healthy.
Have a special place to work or study to help you focus.
Wait for bigger rewards instead of quick ones.
Keep things simple, both around you and in your mind, so you can concentrate.
Listen to advice without feeling bad about yourself.
Use apps and tools to manage your tasks and time.
Reading helps you learn and think better.
Decide what's good enough for you and stick to it.
Believe you can get smarter and better with practice.
Do creative things to stay imaginative and interested.
Listen carefully to others to be better at talking and understanding.

an unsolicited intro + what to expect from this blog
hello, I'm studying for a life sciences degree. and attempting to self-study computer science and bioinformatics. and read more. but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
i currently struggle with chronic perfectionism -> procrastination, overwhelm, workaholism, and all the related issues, so hopefully having this blog will encourage me to eventually overcome them (baby steps! ik it can seem so simple sometimes when you read how-to articles about how to overcome these issues, but when they're chronic, trust me, it is sooo hard to be consistent about it and it takes SO much conscious effort - so if you're in the same boat, please don't give up hope; instead, give yourself the grace you need to keep trying). join me as i ramble (and gripe) about my studies? 😅 (it's a love-hate relationship)
oh yeah also this is a sideblog. pretty much every interaction that can't be done through sideblogs is done through main @pianistbynight 🙂

discipline is self care
self care isn't just face masks and bubble baths, it's also doing your assignment in advance so you won't pull an all nighter before the deadline, cooking at home instead of ordering out; discipline is an act of self love and care

April report / May goals
Tumblr media
Keep reading for more information and April goals
Well, I wrote something (mostly copying difficult sentences print-screened from learning apps) on 15 days out of 30, did some Tofu Learn on most days, and Rosetta Stone almost every day! (thanks to the fact that 10 of my 12-month subscription have already passed)
I have also done 1 lesson per week on HelloChinese as planned, and now there are only 5 lessons left before I finish them all!
Considering that work has been quite overwhelming, I’m very proud of myself.
Another progress I’ve made: I’ve been finding the beginner level ChinesePod lessons a bit easy, so I've started listening to intermediate ones (but it's a very big leap between the levels and tbh most stuff is going over my head).
Speaking practice is still not happening; all I’ve done was record myself reading the 2 stories out loud. In May I believe I will be able to read every week and do at least that.
Which brings us to my goals for May, which are not much different from my April goals apart from the fact that I’ve come to the brillian conclusion that I don’t need a separate space for books when I’m already tracking what I read:
Tumblr media
I intend to finish the lessons on HelloChinese this month, and then in June just review them.
加油!
