study smarter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
introduction:
hey loves! i know i've already posted about how to do better in school and touched on studying, but i wanted to make a post that's more in depth and is only about study habits & how to study more efficiently :)
what makes studying succesful?
small steps everyday. stay consisteny by studying a little bit each day and doing practice everyday.
have a good setting. somewhere that's quieter and you can focus in. have a drink like water or tea and maybe a snack if you want.
studying in chunks. instead of studying for 4 hours straight- study in chunks with little breaks in between. this helps you stay motivated and studying in blocks that you can focus in.
daily habits:
get all your questions answered. if you're unsure about a concept that you leanred make sure you get it clarified as soon as you can. ask questions in class or go after school if you need to.
reading over your notes. as simple as it sounds- after school just read over your notes.
doing extra practice. i like to use quizizz (usually just for psychology) and khan academy (for chemistry and algebra 2).
start studying a week or two before exams. cramming isn't good, ik so many people swear that they *only* remember things if they study before, but you should be aiming to getting information into your long term memory. some classes you can cram when they're only memorization based (i used to do this with biology) but when you get into courses that aren't just filling in blanks and you need to think deeper, it's going to be pretty difficult.
connect new learning to previous knowledge
make meaningful connections- like for example you could relate something you learn in psychology to things you can observe in your life. or relating enzymes in biology to chemical reactions in chemistry.
go beyond what you need to learn
ask yourself questions that get you thinking. 'why does x occur?' 'how is x similar to y?' just questions that make you think deeper. this helps with storing knowledge in your long term memory. :)
test yourself
to practice revtrieval from your memory you need to be testing yourself without your notes. this can be making quizzes for yourself, or just using quizizz or a similar program.
mixing up what you're studying
let's say you're studying for geometry- like learning about finding the area and volume of different shapes. instead of studying the formula for pyramids, only practicing triangles and then moving on to studying prisms and practicing prisms- you should study them all and mix up the questions you practice. so basically just instead of solving 10 problems about riangles and 10 about prisms, you should be solving 20 problems where they're all mixed up

how to stay organized in school
Tumblr media
keep a planner
use a paper planner, notion, notes app, whatever you prefer to write down deadlines, exam dates, etc.
don’t procrastinate
do what you need to do early on. get it done and cross it off your list so that you don’t have to worry about it later and you won’t have a ton of assignments to do last minute.
organize by color
you may do this by separating classes by color and using highlighters/post it notes/colored pens, etc. to separate topics within each class
be realistic with your to-do lists
don’t try to pile on too much in one day. do your best to evenly distribute your tasks throughout the week.
break up large tasks
don’t try to get all of your bigger and time consuming tasks done at one time. distribute them apart from each other. also, you may split your large tasks into smaller tasks to make them seem less intimidating and more doable.
make your own study guides
study guides are helpful and will not always just be given to you, so use the resources you have to build your own for each topic, exam, etc.

flashcards
flashcards are a study tool that aids in memorization. they typically consist of a card bearing information on both sides, with a question or definition on one side and the answer or term on the other. flashcards can be used for various subjects, such as vocabulary, historical dates or formulae, and are effective because they involve active learning through self-testing and spaced repetition. they can be created physically with paper and pen or digitally using software.
here are some tips to create flashcards that are effective and engaging:
phrase your flashcards as questions: instead of simply writing a term or concept, phrase it as a question. this encourages active recall, which is more effective for memory retention.
use the specification: refer to your exam boards specification or past exam papers to ensure your flashcards cover the necessary material and help with exam technique.
one idea, one flashcard: keep your flashcards simple. each should contain one question and one answer. this makes it easier for your brain to process and remember the information.
engaging questions: write questions that are interesting and thought-provoking. avoid one-word answers; instead, aim for answers that make you think about the topic in depth.
regular review: use your flashcards regularly and shuff them often to avoid simply memorizing the order. spaced repetition is the key to long-term retention.
personally, i don't enjoy using flashcards so i'd like to add that everyone is very different and we all learn and enjoy various things. what works for someone online may not work for you. you just have to try and find out.
i hope you find the post helpful.
❤️ joanne

balancing your schedule
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
introduction:
hey loves! a question i see a lot is people wondering how to balance school with sports with a social life, or people just assuming that getting good grades means you need to sacrifice having any sort of life. i want to give some tips that've helped me balance everything out.
for context my schedule is pretty busy on weekdays. i have school from 7:20-2:20, practice from 2:50-5 and then i still need to have dinner, study and do all that before going to bed at 9. on wednesdays school goes from 7:20-1:20, after school i sometimes go out with my friends and have either a game or practice from 7-9 pm. my unweighted GPA is currently a 3.92 (usually a 4.0 but i did pretty bad on a math test recently) and im taking 2 AP courses.
tips:
track your time. be mindful about what your daily routine looks like. like- what does a typical day look like? what do you spend time on?
maximizing dead time. when i finish work early in class i don't go on my phone, i do work for other classes, study if i need to, smth like that.
getting your homework done in class. if you have time in school ALWAYS get your homework done. this means that after school you'll have more time to do other things.
create a schedule. which classes do you need help with? outside of school i only do extra practice & studying for chem everyday, and then studying for psychology before tests.
join extracurriculars that you actually care about. put your time towards what you like and things that you feel like giving time to. don't just join a ton of clubs just for the sake of looking good for colleges.
have a calendar/planner. i always keep a calendar on my wall so i can write down when i have games, tests- just important dates i need to remember. this makes it so i know when to start studying and which days i'm going to be busy.
keep a to-do list. i always have a to-do list for when to finish certain assignments, when i need to study.
prioritize. get the work you need to do the soonest done first.
set aside free time. you need to know when to say no to certain events and just take some time to relax and have for yourself.
conclusion:
i hope this helped! obviously everyone's life looks different- you might have a job or other commitments that make time management difficult, but just work on finding a balance and having time to get your work done while also taking care of yourself.

how to romanticize your life - a series - post 2 - romanticizing school
soo many people see school as something to avoid, as a chore. but we as individuals have the power to change the way we view school. it's an opportunity for growth, discovery, and personal development. so without further ado: here are a couple tips to help you romanticize school!!
Tumblr media
have a positive mindset. in order to study effectively, you need to put aside the negative connotations you have with school and studying and replace them with positive connotations. write out a cons list and then counteract each negative with a positive. for example: con - school is very time consuming | pro - it teaches you time management skills.
create a peaceful and cozy school morning routine. drink some water, watch something funny, use the bathroom, brush your teeth, do your makeup, listen to some nice music, pick out a cute outfit, do your hair, have some matcha.
i also like to say affirmations in the mornings like "i love school" or "i'm amazing at school" to help get me into that positive mindset i was talking about earlier.
make a to-do list. part of romanticizing is not stressing. if you prepare for your day in advance, you can worry less and enjoy more.
really explore your school campus. find all the little nooks and crannys, and don't miss out on anything your school has to offer. for example, i found a little covered picnic table over by the greenhouses at my school that i love to sit at. cute places to study and hang out make school so much more enjoyable.
appreciate being a student. there is so much community and everyone is working toward to common goal to really figure out who they want to be and what they're going to do. it sounds dramatic, but it's true. so i advise you to embrace student life. attend events, plays, games, join clubs, and study with your friends. so go to that football game, participate in spirit days, and enjoy being a student to its fullest potential!
materials are also a huge part of school. you don't have to spend big bucks, but these are some basic things that have helped me:
-cute planners/notebooks, sticky notes -> for goals/organization, writing down something quick, although take physical notes as well!
-books -> gives you something to do, i like romance and educational books
-ipad -> helps with notes/studying, customize it to make it cute, add widgets, and keep in mind that it's all about the vibes
dress to impress. wear cute outfits. treat school as a fashion show. i know dressing up and feeling confident has really enhanced my school experience. some of my favorite things to wear are preppy cardigans, nice jeans, skirts, high knee boots, long sleeve turtlenecks, and just tons of cute tops. layering is very important to me as well. you can also add jewelry to help elevate your style a lil bit.
have a space that you dedicate to only studying. i have a desk in my room that i use, and it has improved my study habits, my grades, and my discipline. it makes studying/schoolwork so much more enjoyable. it always good to keep in mind that your environment impacts tons of other aspects of your life too. make your space your own and personalize it. some potential spots could also be coffee shops or the library, whatever works for you.
make a pinterest board to motivate yourself. this could include study-with-me's, study tips, just general inspiration, or things to do with your main area of study or your major if you're a uni student. this helps you think about "huh, that could be me".
bonus tips:
absorb study content/vlogs
have a good-vibes playlist
in case ya missed the intro post:
stay tuned…
