When I was growing up I wanted so badly to find ace rep. To find just one ace adult that was happy and healthy. Who was out publicly as Ace. Who maybe even was proud to be Ace.

Someone who could act as proof to me that maybe everything was going to be ok.

Well, I'm no poster boy for success by a long shot, but I am ace and I am (apparently) Certified Old, so if anyone needs that rep:

Hi, I'm Panda, and I'm openly aroace, not just here but also in my everyday life. I take work meetings with a big ol' aroace flag on my wall, I have a pin for my rucksack when I travel to meetings, and my wife is knitting me a beanie in the aroace colours.

And yeah I got married, I'd always kinda wanted to, even though I feel little to no romantic and sexual attraction. Luckily I met an incredible allo pan person who takes me exactly as I am. More than anything we're a great team, always supporting each other and championing each other. She knows I love her even if I'm not conventional in the way I show it.

Somedays I still feel like an oddball in my sexuality, being sex repulsed at 30 can make moving through adult spaces tricky at times. Sometimes I still feel incredibly lonely in my aroace identity, that desperate desire to be seen and not overlooked still burning strong.

But I'm lucky there too.

Through fanfic writing I've met a whole range of aspec folks, had commenters who resonate with my experiences and make me feel seen.

Then there's the fact that one of my best friends is also aspec. There's something incredible about being able to chat with someone who is just as puzzled by allonormative society as I am. Who just gets it when most people can't even begin to understand.

Being ace isn't always easy. But I wouldn't trade my aroace identity for the world. It's an integral piece of who I am, a part of me that I cherish even on the rough days.

And if I could go back in time and find teenage me, then I'd just want them to know they weren't alone and that there is nothing broken about them. That they are great just the way they are.

So, as part of my language course, I had to give a speech in front of a bunch of teachers at my homophobic college, and me, being the rebel that I am, decided to do it on 'why aroace people deserve better representation'. The day arrived where I had to give it and I was so nervous because there were so many teachers and I was definitely not prepared. I said it and when I was done they were all silent. No questions, no claps, no nothing. Until the deputy head just said "see, they get it"

And that's how I found out that the deputy of a majorly homophobic college was, in fact, an aroace.

and yet people still think being queer/trans is a choice. I will not choose to be assaulted for kissing men and I will not choose to be murdered for being trans.
