How Exercise Keeps Your Mind Sharp and Your Stress at Bay
Dear fellow British fathers, are you feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders? With the responsibilities of fatherhood, career demands, and the never-ending to-do lists, it's no wonder that stress and anxiety can creep in. But fear not, because there's a simple solution that doesn't involve escaping to a remote island: exercise. Yes, you heard it right! Those trips to the gym aren't just about sculpting your physique; they're also crucial for managing your mental health. Let's dive into the wonderful world of exercise and its profound benefits for your mind.
As a father of two, I know your time is undoubtedly limited. But even squeezing in just three to four gym sessions a week can work wonders for your mental well-being. Here's how:
Stress Relief: Picture this: after a long day of juggling work meetings and kids' activities, you step into the gym. As you lace up your trainers and hit the treadmill, something magical happens. The stress of the day begins to melt away with each step. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, those feel-good chemicals in your brain that act as natural painkillers and mood elevators. So, by the time you finish your workout, you'll feel lighter, more relaxed, and ready to tackle whatever life throws your way.
Improved Mood: Ever notice how your mood instantly lifts after a good workout? That's not just a coincidence. Exercise has been shown to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety by increasing the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. These brain chemicals play a crucial role in regulating mood, and by engaging in regular physical activity, you're giving them a major boost. So, the next time you're feeling down in the dumps, skip the pub and head to the gym instead. Your mind will thank you for it.
Enhanced Cognitive Function: As a dad, you need to stay sharp to keep up with your kids' endless energy and curiosity. Luckily, exercise can help with that too. Research has found that regular physical activity improves cognitive function, including memory, attention, and decision-making skills. So, by making exercise a priority, you're not just investing in your physical health; you're also giving your brain a much-needed workout. Who knows, you might even outsmart your little ones at their own games!
Better Sleep: Ah, sleep – every parent's elusive dream. But what if I told you that exercise could help you catch those precious z's? It's true! Regular physical activity has been linked to improved sleep quality and duration. By tiring out your body during the day, you'll find it easier to drift off to sleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. So, instead of tossing and turning, hit the gym for a workout that will leave you feeling blissfully exhausted.
In conclusion, dear British dad, don't underestimate the power of exercise when it comes to managing your mental health. Those trips to the gym may seem like just another item on your never-ending to-do list, but in reality, they're essential for keeping your mind sharp and your stress levels in check. So, lace up those trainers, hit the treadmill and the weights, and let the endorphins do their magic. Your mental health will thank you for it, and so will your family

GARDENING
10 Reasons to Plant Lettuce now!
Growing your own lettuce at home comes with a host of benefits, contributing to both your health and the environment:
Freshness and Flavor: Homegrown lettuce is incredibly fresh, offering a vibrant taste that surpasses store-bought alternatives. Picking it straight from your garden ensures peak flavor and nutritional value.
Nutrient-Rich: Lettuce is a low-calorie food packed with essential nutrients like vitamins A and K, folate, and various antioxidants. Growing your own ensures that you have access to a nutrient-rich source without the potential loss of freshness during transportation and storage.
Cost-Effective: Cultivating lettuce at home can be cost-effective in the long run. Once you've established your lettuce plants, you can enjoy a continuous harvest without the need to purchase lettuce regularly.
Variety and Diversity: Home gardening allows you to choose from a wide variety of lettuce types, from crispy iceberg to nutrient-dense spinach or flavorful arugula. You can experiment with different cultivars and enjoy a diverse range of tastes and textures.
No Pesticide Residues: When you grow your own lettuce, you have control over the cultivation methods. You can choose organic practices or avoid the use of pesticides, reducing your exposure to chemical residues that may be present in store-bought produce.
Educational Experience: Growing lettuce provides an excellent opportunity for hands-on learning, whether for yourself or for children. It teaches valuable lessons about plant life cycles, gardening practices, and the importance of fresh, locally sourced food.
Reduced Environmental Impact: By growing your own lettuce, you contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with the production, packaging, and transportation of commercially grown lettuce. This aligns with sustainable practices and reduces your carbon footprint.
Year-Round Availability: With indoor gardening or season extension techniques, you can potentially have fresh lettuce year-round. This availability ensures a constant supply of fresh greens for your salads and meals.
Physical Activity and Stress Relief: Gardening is a physical activity that promotes well-being and stress relief. Tending to your lettuce plants can be a therapeutic and enjoyable experience.
Satisfaction and Connection: There's a unique satisfaction in harvesting and enjoying the fruits of your own labor. Growing your own lettuce fosters a connection to your food, promoting a deeper appreciation for the entire process from seed to plate.

How to incorporate holistic health and alternative medicine into your wellness journey
Holistic health is an approach to wellness that considers the whole person – body, mind, spirit, and emotions – in the quest for optimal health and well-being. Alternative medicine is any practice that aims to achieve the healing effects of medicine, but which lacks biological plausibility and is untested, untestable or proven ineffective.
There are many ways to incorporate holistic health and alternative medicine into your wellness journey, depending on your personal preferences, needs, and goals. Some of the common methods are:
Diet and herbs: Eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and water can help nourish your body and prevent chronic diseases. You can also use dietary supplements and herbal remedies to support your health, but make sure to consult with your doctor before taking any supplements or herbs, as they may interact with your medications or have side effects.
Body therapies: Using touch, movement, or manipulation to improve the function of your body can help relieve pain, reduce stress, improve circulation, and enhance your well-being. Some examples of body therapies are massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, osteopathy, tai chi, yoga, and reflexology.
Mind-body therapies: Engaging your mind in positive and relaxing activities can help improve your mood, cognition, and emotional balance. Some examples of mind-body therapies are meditation, hypnosis, biofeedback, guided imagery, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Spiritual practices: Connecting with a higher power or a sense of meaning and purpose can help you cope with life’s challenges and find peace and harmony. Some examples of spiritual practices are prayer, faith, gratitude, forgiveness, and service.
External energy therapies: Using natural or artificial sources of energy to influence the energy fields of your body can help restore balance and harmony. Some examples of external energy therapies are electromagnetic therapy, reiki, qi gong, and crystal healing.
Remember that holistic medicine is not a substitute for conventional medicine, but a complement that can enhance your health and quality of life.

Pile 1 🌺
For those who chose Pile 1, it seems that you have been feeling stuck lately. There is a sense of stagnation in your life and a lack of forward movement. You may feel like you are unable to move past a certain point in your life, whether that is related to your career, your relationships, or your personal growth. However, there is good news! The cards suggest that this period of stagnation is temporary and that a breakthrough is coming. You will soon have a realization or a moment of clarity that will help you to move forward. This could come from a conversation with a friend or loved one, a sudden insight, or even a dream. Whatever it is, it will feel like a revelation and will give you the push you need to start making progress again. Trust in the universe and have faith that things will work out for you.
__________
Pile 2 🌺
For those who chose Pile 2, the cards suggest that you are in a period of transition. You may have recently experienced a major change in your life, such as a move, a breakup, or a new job. This change has left you feeling a bit unsteady and unsure of yourself. However, the cards indicate that this period of transition is necessary and will ultimately lead to growth and positive changes. You may feel like you are in limbo right now, but try to embrace this time of uncertainty and use it as an opportunity to reflect on what you really want in life. Use this time to explore new interests, meet new people, and try new things. You will come out the other side of this period of transition feeling stronger, more confident, and more sure of yourself.
__________
Pile 3 🌺
For those who chose Pile 3, the cards suggest that you are at a crossroads in your life. You may be facing a difficult decision or a choice between two paths. This decision may be related to your career, your relationships, or your personal growth. The cards indicate that it is important for you to take your time with this decision and not rush into anything. Consider all of your options and weigh the pros and cons of each. You may want to seek advice from a trusted friend or loved one, or even a professional. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make, but trust that the universe will guide you towards the right path. Remember, there are no wrong decisions - every choice you make is an opportunity for growth and learning.
__________
Pile 4 🌺
For those who chose Pile 4, the cards suggest that you are currently in a period of abundance and prosperity. You may have recently experienced a windfall, such as a new job, a raise, or a financial gift. Whatever it is, you are feeling blessed and grateful for all that you have. However, the cards caution against becoming too complacent or taking your blessings for granted. Remember to remain humble and continue to work hard towards your goals. This is a time of growth and expansion, so keep pushing yourself to reach new heights. Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things - this is the time to go after your dreams! The universe is on your side, so trust in your abilities and know that you are capable of achieving great things.

Introduction:
Great philosophers and thinkers have been captivated by the intricate relationship between the mind and the body. The connection between the two remains very enigmatic despite the advancement of science and discoveries. Various philosophical perspectives often offer relatable examples to grasp this complex connection. What's most relevant to me as a doctor is the rising field of "psychosomatics" which I will discuss at the end of the post.
Dualism:
Our dissection begins with dualism, a notion that separates the mind and the body as distinct entities. Dualism suggests that the mind, often referred to as the "soul" or "consciousness," is non-physical, whereas the body is purely physical. To make ourselves very familiar with the concept, we can give the example of a video game character controlled by a player: the character represents the body, while the player's decisions symbolize the mind - thus separate entities influencing one another.
Materialism:
Materialism, on the other hand, suggests that everything, including mental or psychological experiences, can be explained through physical processes. In this view, the mind is purely a product of the brain and its neurological activity. Imagine a computer program running on hardware; the program is entirely dependent on the underlying hardware. Changes in the hardware can directly affect the program's operation, similar to how the mind, according to materialism, emerges from the physical brain's activities. In real-life medical examples, people who suffer from cerebrovascular accidents, whether bleeds or strokes, lose part of their neurological functions once an area of the brain gets damaged.
Idealism:
Idealism turns the tables by suggesting that only the mind or the consciousness is genuinely real. According to this philosophical perspective, the physical world is a construct of the mind's thoughts and perceptions. To simplify that, consider a dream where the dreamer's mind generates an entire world, people, and events. In the idealist view, the external physical world resembles a dream, existing as a projection of the mind.
Neutral Monism:
Neutral monism offers a unique perspective by suggesting a "neutral substance" underlying both mental and physical phenomena. This neutral substance gives rise to the rich combination of experiences that make up our reality. Consider the concept of energy, which can manifest as both physical (e.g., kinetic energy in a moving car) and mental (e.g., the energy of thought and emotion). In neutral monism, this shared concept of energy represents the underlying reality.
Psychosomatics:
Amidst these philosophical views, psychosomatics provides real-world evidence of the mind-body connection. This field explores the interplay between the mind (psyche) and the body (soma) and how mental factors can profoundly affect our physical health. For example, stress-related illnesses, like tension headaches or stomach ulcers, exemplify how our emotional and mental states can manifest physically, leading to serious health issues. Psychosomatics highlights the significant impact of mental well-being on our physical state, bridging the gap between philosophy and practical health.
I treated a young Syrian man who was a war refugee. Years before the war, his right arm took a hit and was fractured, but it healed the same year. After the war, he survived the bombings, but most of his family and friends did not make it. He witnessed atrocities being committed before him. Later on, his brother was killed and as a result, his mother suffered a heart attack that claimed her life. He later came to Lebanon as a refugee to start a new life. When he presented to my clinic, he was complaining of right arm pain at the site of the previously healed fracture. The intensity of the pain woke him up in the middle of the night and along with it, he felt warmth in his arm and it was sweating locally.
Later, I managed to diagnose my patient with "complex regional pain syndrome". Little did I know about such a syndrome and how it exemplifies psychosomatics. Several trials recommended antidepressants to treat his condition - as well as the overlying depression he was secretly suffering from.
Conclusion:
The mind-body problem, though centuries old, remains an open question, and while we've explored a multitude of perspectives, it's clear that the debate continues. Psychosomatics offers a tangible connection between our mental and physical states, underscoring the profound implications of the mind-body relationship. From a personal experience, I witnessed the improvement of physical symptoms under the influence of an antidepressant medication. That is fascinating to encounter and since then, I always considered the psychological aspect of any chronic or acute complaint.

8 Signs You Haven't Forgiven Yourself and Steps to Embrace Self-Forgiveness
Forgiving oneself is a profound act of self-compassion and personal growth, but it's a journey that can be laden with obstacles. Lingering guilt, self-doubt, and negative self-perceptions can weigh heavily, preventing us from fully embracing our present and future. In this blog, we'll delve into the eight common signs that may indicate you haven't yet forgiven yourself, along with practical steps to ignite the transformative process of self-forgiveness and healing.
1. Lingering Guilt:
Persistent guilt and shame over past actions, coupled with incessantly replaying these scenarios in your mind, may signify a reluctance to grant yourself forgiveness. These mental loops can hinder your ability to break free from the shackles of the past. This further trigger self punishment
2. Self-Punishment:
Engaging in self-destructive behaviors, like excessive drinking, can be a form of self-punishment for perceived mistakes. Recognizing these actions is the initial step toward embracing self-compassion.
3. Negative Self-Image:
Focusing solely on past failures while dismissing your achievements and positive qualities is indicative of an unresolved self-forgiveness. Reframe your perspective to acknowledge your inherent worthiness.
4. Inability to Move Forward:
Dwelling on missed opportunities or past blunders can impede personal growth and prevent you from embracing new experiences. By staying fixated on the past, you limit your potential for a fulfilling future.
5. Emotional Distress:
Unforgiveness towards oneself can lead to intense emotional distress, manifesting as anxiety, depression, or persistent sadness. These emotional burdens arise from fixating on past actions and blaming oneself for the ensuing consequences.
6. Persistent Self-Judgment:
Subjecting yourself to relentless self-criticism and setting impossibly high standards is a hallmark of unforgiveness. Break free from this cycle by fostering self-compassion and adopting a more balanced view of your capabilities.
7. Difficulty Accepting Love and Support:
Struggling to accept love, kindness, or support from others can stem from unresolved self-forgiveness. Dismiss notions of being undeserving and allow yourself to receive the care you truly merit.
8. Avoidance of Self-Care:
Neglecting self-care, whether physical or emotional, due to feelings of unworthiness is a clear sign of lingering unforgiveness. Prioritize self-nurturing to demonstrate your commitment to healing.
 Steps to Initiate Self-Forgiveness:
During my practice sessions, I frequently observe the mentioned characteristics above. By utilizing practical tools and various transformative techniques, a noticeable change occurs, and individuals learn to embrace their emotions. Other steps to initiate forgivieness are:
1. Self Compassion: Self compassion is validating your emotions and granting yourself permission to feel them without judgment.
2. Practice Self-Compassion: Extend kindness and understanding toward yourself, treating your inner dialogue with the gentleness you would offer a cherished friend.
3. Take Responsibility: Acknowledge past mistakes without dwelling on them, taking ownership of your actions and their consequences.
4. Learn and Grow: Transform your past experiences into opportunities for personal growth, applying the insights gained to your future choices.
5. Make Amends: When feasible, take steps to rectify past wrongs through sincere apologies or actions.
6. Shift Your Perspective: Challenge self-limiting beliefs and emphasize your strengths and accomplishments alongside your missteps.
7. Seek Professional Support: Engage with qualified Life coaches, therapists or trusted individuals to guide you through the intricate process of self-forgiveness.
8. Contemplation /Meditation: Employ contemplative techniques, such as meditation to stay present and minimize rumination.
From my professional experience, self-forgiveness is an ongoing journey that unfolds at its own pace. The above steps is an initial step to self forgiveness, exercise patience and commitment as you traverse the path of healing and growth. By recognizing the signs of unforgiveness and embarking on the transformative steps outlined here, you embark on a profound voyage toward self-acceptance and a brighter future filled with compassion and self-love.

The Role of Hypnotherapy: A Guiding Beacon Amidst Life's Challenges
In our exploration of various therapeutic modalities, hypnotherapy often emerges as an intriguing yet misunderstood field. I want to see if I can demystify hypnotherapy for some of you by steering clear from popular misconceptions of stage hypnosis and instead, draw an analogy to a lighthouse guiding vessels through stormy seas.
Envision yourself navigating a ship amid a tumultuous sea. Suddenly, you find yourself amidst a violent storm. The waves thrash against your vessel, winds bellow, and visibility is significantly reduced by the dense mist. The situation is overwhelming and incites fear. Amidst this chaos, imagine sighting a lighthouse in the distance, its powerful beacon slicing through the darkness, offering direction and hope.
This lighthouse is a symbol for hypnotherapy in our analogy. Hypnotherapy, much like a lighthouse, guides you through the tempestuous sea of your subconscious mind, illuminating the path towards safer shores. It helps reveal the hidden rocks of self-limiting beliefs, fears, anxieties, and unwanted behaviors residing in the depths of your subconscious.
Hypnotherapy is not about manipulation or control. Rather, it facilitates a deeply relaxed state where your mind becomes more open to positive suggestions. This receptiveness allows you to confront and address issues that may be causing you distress.
Much as a lighthouse sheds light on potential hazards, allowing sailors to navigate around them, hypnotherapy uncovers internal barriers that may be inhibiting your progress. By bringing these issues to light, you can maneuver around these barriers and set a course towards a healthier, more positive life trajectory.
Whether you're grappling with anxiety, stress, depression, phobias, or looking to overcome unhealthy habits such as smoking, hypnotherapy can serve as your personal lighthouse. It guides you through these challenges, leading you towards resolution and tranquility.
Hypnotherapy stands as a potent tool in navigating the subconscious. It should not be viewed with apprehension but rather seen as a beacon of light, illuminating one's inner world, and guiding individuals towards healthier shores.
