Things I have learned today:
1. If you have a convection oven and a grill pan with a high enough clearance between the grill and the pan, you can cook hot dogs in the oven and get an end result that’s absolutely indistinguishable from cooking them on a barbecue.
2. If you try this with hamburgers they will catch on fire.

I said I would try to step away from tumblr. but also i've been trying to research meat consumption in the US today. which I don't think is actually stepping away from The Discourse. So.
I will say this: Except for fish and seafood I hardly ever eat meat. I eat some things that are non-vegetarian by virtue of containing chicken broth or something like that, but most days I don't actually eat anything that contains meat.
I have honestly no idea how to compare this to what other Americans are doing, and most estimates of USAmerican meat consumption seem really off to me.
Plant-based advocates constantly point to how expensive meat is as a reason why "it's harder for poor people to go vegan" is false, but it seems to me like a total misunderstanding of by what means poor people's diets are non-vegan. So many of the Poor People Foods that are non-vegan aren't meat.
Like...how much of beef-flavored Ramen can actually be considered "meat?" What is "dehydrated beef solids" and how much is it contributing to the Ramen. I really don't know how to approach this one. How much of biscuits and gravy is "meat based?" Mayonnaise. Butter. A lot of Southerners save bacon grease and cook other things in it. Beef and chicken broth. Pork and beans is like 95% bean, there's just a random bit of pork fat for flavor.
This is a bit of a side note, but in the Appalachian region, people eat a lot of animal products that are not super acceptable elsewhere. In western North Carolina you can find livermush in the grocery store, which is made from—no, really, i've read the ingredients label—organ meats and "head parts," among other things. Chitlins (i've seen it spelled chitterlings) are another example. I've also seen pickled pigs' feet in a Western North Carolina grocery store. Hooves and everything.
Most of my relatives' meat consumption is primarily in the form of highly processed stuff like bologna and Spam, which is the same kind of thing: food made from the "undesirable" parts of animals.
This is a complication to the question of whether eating meat vs. eating plant based is "affordable" or not, because a lot of the poorest folks are eating meat that isn't acceptable food to rich people (unless it's sold to them as some kind of ~exotic~ delicacy), and they're making every bit of bacon fat or sausage stretch to make primarily "plant based" meals stick to your ribs a little more.
Anyway:

What's happening here
y'all will have to help me because i'm bad at calculations. But I did the conversion both ways, and the estimate NPR gives is three times the amount of the North American Meat Institute estimate. How??

I was evicted from my own house by a crab because I never eat at home, therefore there was no detritus on the house's floor, devastating the local ecosystem and causing said crab to starve.

I was in a car with someone and they offered me marshmallows, they gave me a time limit to eat them all but I didn't finish in time so it all turned to worms and we crashed because he wanted to kill us all.
