The hypertension drug rilmenidine has been shown to slow down aging in worms, an effect that in humans could hypothetically help us live longer and keep us healthier in our latter years. Previous research has shown rilmenidine mimics the effects of caloric restriction on a cellular level. Reducing available energy while maintaining nutrition within the body has been shown to extend lifespans in several animal models. Whether this translates to human biology, or is a potential risk to our health, is a topic of ongoing debate. Finding ways to achieve the same benefits without the costs of extreme calorie cutting could lead to new ways to improve health in old age. In a study published in January, young and old Caenorhabditis elegans worms treated with the drug – which is normally used to treat high blood pressure – lived longer and presented higher measures in a variety of health markers in the same way as restricting calories, as the scientists had hoped. "For the first time, we have been able to show in animals that rilmenidine can increase lifespan," said molecular biogerontologist João Pedro Magalhães, from the University of Birmingham in the UK.

Hypertension has long been known to be a causative factor for a multitude of medical ailments. Hypertension has further been noticed to have significantly increased in recent years, posing a public health concern. While medical costs and inconvenience may deter potential patients from seeking frequent blood pressure monitoring, new advances in wearable medical devices have made it possible to measure blood pressure cheaply and conveniently from the comfort of one’s home. Tsinghua University, China, researchers designed a wearable device and a novel blood pressure measurement technique for continuous monitoring. The wearable device can be generalized across individuals and has considerable promise in personal healthcare applications.
Hypertension is a medical ailment that has received significant scrutiny over the past few decades. A condition wherein the arterial blood pressure is higher than normal over a long period of time, it has been implicated as a significant risk factor in conditions such as heart failure, strokes, and atrial fibrillation, among others. Lifestyle and genetic factors greatly increase the risk of having high blood pressure, and it has been noted to be a cause of premature death all over the world.
We can see that the measurement of blood pressure regularly can have significant positive impacts by letting individuals know about irregularities in a timely and convenient manner. Wearable medical devices also eliminate other factors in the mismeasurement of blood pressure, including human error and blood pressure variability in various settings. Ambulatory monitors have been developed for this purpose, which can be used to measure blood pressure at certain intervals, but even these cannot provide continuous measurement of blood pressure and prove to be inconvenient to the user since they often need to be used at a frequency of once every 15 to 30 minutes, and interrupt the progression of daily life.

Whump Prompt #1124
Submitted by Anon - thanks!
Whumpee and caretaker are having a very pleasant day when whumpee starts feeling pain in his left shoulder and thirsty...they sit down and caretaker gets them water...
Suddenly the whumpee collapses due to a heart attack. Could be after effects of some past torture or anything you'd like to add or modify.
I’ll add:
Maybe a clot forms if they’ve been bed bound for a while. The whumpee is particularly annoyed because they’ve just recovered.
Maybe they initially passed off the symptoms as the aftermath of their captivity.
Other causes include: stress, hypertension (high blood pressure), medication/drugs, smoking/vaping,

Shout out to the people with hypertension and POTS, who feel like imposters or isolated from the community because the 'ALL THE SALT' memes don't apply to you.
Your diagnosis is valid.
Just because your presentation is atypical, doesn't mean it's misdiagnosed.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise.

How has your heart beat this week?
This has been the most stressful two weeks of my life. My heart has been pounding extremely fast, constantly for almost a full 14 days. My blood pressure is dangerously high and my heart has been skipping so much more than usual. My chest aches.
I wish someone would listen to my exhausted, stressed heart and tell me just how much damage has been done in two weeks.

Rilmenidine was picked for this latest study because past research has shown it mimics the effects of caloric restriction on a cellular level.
In a series of tests conducted by an international team of researchers, young and old Caenorhabditis elegans worms treated with the drug – which is normally used to treat high blood pressure – lived longer and presented higher measures in a variety of health markers in the same way as restricting calories, as the scientists had hoped.
"For the first time, we have been able to show in animals that rilmenidine can increase lifespan," says molecular biogerontologist João Pedro Magalhães, from the University of Birmingham in the UK. "We are now keen to explore if rilmenidine may have other clinical applications."

hypertension, 14x11”, 2023
thank you king gizzard and the lizard wizard for releasing such a good album on my birthday
this ones a two block print. i planned it out in procreate and transferred the key image to the block by stitching together two printed out sheets of paper and transferred it with red wax paper. then i carved out the key block, printed it onto a sheet of newsprint, transferred the ink of that onto a clean piece of linoleum and carved around it with the digital version as reference to make the gold layer block
i’ve had a lot of registration issues with this one so i only printed a few of these. or day i’ll get back to it as see what was up with the blocks
alt text under the cut:
[ID: a photo of a black and gold, vaguely art deco style linocut print being held up against a pink wall, the framed murlocs tour poster is visible in the background. the print depicts a clock face with a four pointed star in the center. the clock hands are set to about 7:24. there are three pairs of wings coming up from the top half of the star and the numbers on the clock face are visible over the wings. this is all contained in an arched rectangle with a double lined border. curved along the top of the arch on the inside is slightly curly text in all caps that reads "rotate anticlockwise" and along the bottom in three straight rows is text in the same font that reads "see through backward-facing eyes". there are symmetrical curls and teardrop shapes around the bottom text. at the top corners of the print are two triangles filling up the space left by the arch with the same teardrop shapes as before inside them. there is a stylized open eye with gold sclera at the top center of the print.]
