“Just because she’s independent and single doesn’t mean she’s a lesbian, you’re being stereotypical” shut the fuck up shut the fuck up SHUT THE FUCK UP.
As if every single female character doesn’t already have to be attracted to men and center men in their attraction. And now the second we headcanon a female character who doesn’t have a romantic relationship with men as a lesbian suddenly we’re the bad guys?
Lesbians get no representation ever but oh I get it, female characters are allowed to be strong and independent and not need a guy to be fulfilled and all of that crap you spew in the name of feminism, so long as they’re still attracted to guys that is.
God forbid a female character is actually independent from and fully de-centers men by not being attracted to them at all. God forbid lesbians have an ACTUAL CHARACTER to see themselves in to remind us that we are not “incomplete” for not liking men. But y’all don’t care about that, I already know. It’s not forcing independent girls to be lesbians and it’s not “stereotyping” you guys just see lesbian as a dirty word, and you see us as perverted, gross, forceful, man-haters, or less than women because your identity is wrapped up in liking men and you center them at every turn, straight women will always complain about female characters being lesbians with “why can’t she just be independent” meanwhile y’all exclude us from conversations with your endless jabber about boyfriends and crushes, lol fucking jokes.
The truth is lesbians are the embodiment of what womanhood looks like without the centering of men and that threatens y’all somehow, so the second a female character is seen as a lesbian you come out with the pitchforks screaming “nuh-uh, she’s STRAIGHT!” It’s not the “independence” that is the problem, you’re just mad and offended by female characters not being available to men or depending on them to find love and be happy, that’s the real problem that you pretend is the opposite.
And don’t pretend that you treat canonical lesbians any better either, because when we do get them you erase their sexuality by calling them straight or bi and writing fics about them being shipped with male characters they have no chemistry with(because they’re lesbians), or making them aroace(because if they can’t be into men then you’ll make sure they’re not into women either), you don’t give a shit fuck about independent women and even less of one about lesbians, you just see a woman not being attracted to men as not fulfilling their proper role as women because you still define womanhood as revolving around men even when they are “independent” and thus you need to “punish” them somehow.
So, disrespectfully, fuck off, and don’t come after us lesbians with our headcanons about characters as lesbians with “but but but can’t she be strong and independent without being a lesbian?! Can’t she still be straight!!! I can respect her not getting with a man but I still need her to like guys please!!!” Because you WILL get embarrassed and you WILL get your feelings hurt.

Encanto Headcanons Nobody Asked For
Hello! I am putting off writing my last essay of the semester, so here are some headcanons!
The thing where the kids touch the candle and promise to help Encanto however they can started as Alma's way to reassure nervous villagers that the Madrigals wouldn't misuse their gifts.
When Alma first got her door and saw an old woman on it, she was super confused, but also too tired from the day's events to question it too much. When she eventually looks the same as her picture on the door she has a small mid-life crisis that she reveals to nobody.
Same for each of the triplets.
People do actually break into song in universe, it is a side effect of all the magic in Encanto. The first time it happened was about seven months in and everybody freaked out about it for months.
Alma eventually gets used to the singing thing and never thinks to mention it isn't normal to her kids or grandkids. In fact, most people in Encanto take the singing for granted, so when the mountains open up and they get a few new villagers nobody bothers to warn them that the village will regularly break into song.
I know the creators said the village is completely self sufficient, but like... where's the quarry for all the stone? Where are they making glass, that requires a specific kind of sand, do they have that sand? How are they getting new books? Nah bro, the village has three merchants who journey past the mountains twice a year.
I know the generally accepted headcanon is that Agustin was born outside of the Encanto, but I think his parents were city dwellers visiting family when the village got raided. They escaped with their hosts and planned to take their family back to the city with them, then ended up in a magic paradise instead.
In the same vein, Agustin's dad was a banker and has become the town's unofficial treasurer since that's about the only way he can contribute with his skill set.
Agustin's mother passed in childbirth, his father eventually remarried, but only after a few years of grieving. Agustin has three much younger half siblings.
Bubba comes to Encanto and does indeed get with Isabela, but I mean... some AMAB dude who surrounds himself with the trappings of masculinity and had zero problem seeing through Isabella's hyper feminine facade? Trans woman Bubba. All I'm saying. (Transphobes dni, neither of us will change the other's mind).
The art book had something about Isabela looking more indigenous than her sisters, so we know the family has indigenous roots. I wasn't able to find a lot about queer history in Colombia, but I did see that two native men were murdered by colonizers for being gay out in the open. That kinda implies that homophobia comes from the colonialist side of modern Colombia. I choose to believe that Alma has a great aunt on the native side of her family who is married to a woman. She grew up hearing that they have to keep the marriage secret to protect her aunts, so when she notices Bruno has a boyfriend, she starts planning a secret wedding without mentioning anything to Bruno.
Bruno doesn't realize his mama knows he's not straight, he thinks he's hidden it very well. When Isabela and Bubba nervously come out at dinner and Alma asks Bruno if he has any advice about being queer, Bruno inhales what he's eating and needs the Heimlich.
I agree in general with queer Madrigal headcanons, but I'm also aware that we're dealing with an isolated community a couple decades before the lgbt rights movement really kicked off in Colombia. I suspect most of the characters wouldn't use any of the labels we use today, and in fact, characters like Mirabel wouldn't stop to consider they're not straight until they've already been happily married for two decades.
That said, I think Mirabel is what we consider to be bi with a heavy preference for men. Her husband is quiet and doesn't have a single creative bone in his body, but thinks everything she sews deserves to be put in a museum. They bond because he commissions her to make something for his mother.
Luisa gets a tiny little husband who falls to pieces when she flexes. He does not understand people who say she is too masculine, or call Isabela the pretty one.
Camilo's youngest son is autistic, not that any of them know that's what the kid's deal is. Camilo just thinks his son is hilariously blunt and really into bugs. He doesn't really get how the kid can spend hours looking at an ant hill without getting bored, but whatever, he'll just buy the kid an ant farm for his birthday.
When women marry into the Madrigal family that don't have anybody to walk them down the aisle, they ask Tio Bruno to do it. It started with Camilo's wife, whose father is abusive, and became a tradition as the family grew.
When Mirabel becomes a grandmother the family starts calling her Mirabuela. Similarly, Antonio eventually becomes Tio Nio, to the point that some people forget he has a first name.
I actually have a lot of headcanons about the future of the Madrigal family but this is getting long, so I'm going to stop. I've ended up mentally writing whole ass fics for Camilo's wife and his youngest granddaughter, as well as for Mirabel's daughter, and Dolores' great grandson, so if I get into all of that this thing is going to triple in length.

Random thought while watching someone react to Encanto. I've seen a good number of queer headcanons for Isabela and Camilo as closeted lesbian and genderfluid, respectively, but I just had the thought of "Mirabel feels like she's lacking something everyone else has" which is also what a lot of aro and/or ace people feel like in the current heteronormative society.
The receiving of a Gift is even framed as a minor "coming of age" like puberty, which is when feelings start to come in for most people. But Mirabel didn't get the Gift. She didn't get what most of the people around her did.

Isabela and Mirabel have a revealing conversation post-fall.
Snippet from my fic ‘Tradition’ that can stand on its own and I actually really like, so I’m posting here.
*******
It’s been a few days since Casita fell.
Isabela hasn’t been able to feel anything but a weight on her chest.
She almost lost her little sister.
Almost watched her die.
For a candle.
Because she couldn’t stand up for herself to Abuela.
Because she let Mirabel be blamed and screamed at, all because she was afraid.
Afraid of the truth.
Isabela was sorting through the clothing that’d been loaned to them, putting them in piles according to size when the very sister she’d been thinking of comes up next to her.
Isabela feels a hand on her shoulder.
She turns and sees a face filled with concern.
“Can we talk?”
Isabela nods and puts down the shirt in her hands, letting herself be led to a chair.
I don’t deserve your concern Mirabel. I was terrible to you for so long because I was jealous. I’m so sorry. You’re so brave and interesting and I wish I could be more like you.
Isabela doesn’t say any of that out loud though.
“What’s up?”
Mirabel adjusts her glasses in a mimicry of their father and fixes her with a serious face.
“You haven’t broken it off with Mariano.”
Isabela feels her eyebrows turn in.
She hesitantly nods, unsure what Mirabel is getting at.
It’s Mirabel’s turn to look confused, not understanding Isabela’s own confusion.
“You— you don’t love him. You told me yourself.” Mirabel gesticulates as she speaks, her hands flying wildly. “So… why not?”
Old habits die hard and Isabela’s walls are up.
She scoffs.
“You think I could do that now? Of all times? After everything fell apart?” Mirabel flinches back and Isabela feels guilt stab at her.
Isabela just sadly shakes her head and looks away. “The family needs this now more than ever.”
“Isa, look at me.” She keeps her gaze locked on the ground.
“Please.”
Isabela tilts her head fractionally and looks at Mirabel out of the corner of her eyes.
Mirabel reaches out and grasps Isabela’s hands.
“The family doesn’t need you to be anyone but yourself. No one would want you to marry a man you don’t love. Especially not Abuela. Don’t do this for her.”
Tears spring to Isabela’s eyes.
I just can’t.
How would I even start.
It’s not even just Mariano either, but men and how could I say that.
Without realizing, she’d said those things out loud based on the sharp inhale Mirabel takes in response.
Isabela finds herself wrapped in a hug before she knows what’s happening.
“Oh Isa. Thank you for telling me.”
Isabela blinks and the tears start to go down her face.
She hadn’t meant to tell her sister that, the same way she’d never meant to tell her that she didn’t want to marry Mariano in the first place.
But holy crap does she feel great now that she has.
Mirabel just seemed to drag the truth out of her these days.
“I love you. I’m proud of you. And you don’t have to tell anyone anything you don’t want.” Mirabel draws back and cups Isabela’s cheeks just like Mamá does and wipes away the tears.
“But you do owe Mariano the truth that you don’t love him.”
Isabela closes her eyes at that, letting more tears out, even as she nods.
She knows she does.
She’s known for years that she was being unfair to him.
Trapping him in a loveless marriage as much as she was being trapped herself.
“Also… it might not be the best time to mention but I think Dolores might like him.” Mirabel let’s out the words in a rush and Isabela’s eyes open in surprise.
Mirabel has a shocked look of her own as if she can’t believe she said the words out loud.
“Wh—what?” Isabela whispers.
Mirabel cringes but nods.
No.
Dolores doesn’t—
No.
Isabela claps a hand over her mouth as she cries out, a lot of things being to make sense to her.
I was ruining her life too.
Oh my god.
I was the girl in the vision.
Betrothed to another.
Fuck.
Isabela cries out again, a mix between a sob and a manic laugh.
She has to go find Mariano.
She has to find her prima.
And she has to start being more honest.

Okay so I know I haven’t been posting in like forever about Isabela Madrigal or Encanto despite this blog originally being meant as an Isabela appreciation blog, my interest in Encanto has kinda died down for the time being due to no new stuff being made and me hyoerfixating in other things to my own detriment(so if you’re wondering why I haven’t updated my fics in a while, this is why), and I’m sincerely so sorry about that…but also a thought has been with me for a while and I have to say it now especially because it’s exactly on topic for a blog such as this and it’s something near and dear to me that makes me so happy.
The headcanon that Isabela is a lesbian makes me so proud and grateful to be a lesbian. In fact, it’s actually what originally helped me realize I was a lesbian myself. And I’m not saying this in a “thirsty” way mind you(although she is also my cartoon crush), but seeing so much of myself in her and seeing her as a lesbian and knowing that so many people in the Encanto fandom, lesbian or not, also see her in the same way, was a huge comfort to me. I didn’t have any idea of the true reason it meant so much to me to see a character like Isabela—portrayed as the most graceful flower, unambiguously and unapologetically feminine in her own way even after her transformation, as the most beautiful and also darkest-skinned of the Madrigals, and who has my same sassy but sweethearted personality and wears my favorite color—being viewed as a lesbian, but it was. And it’s a headcanon that I’ve always held near and dear to my heart ever since I first heard it.
And it was that headcanon that lead me to start educating myself about things like lesbophobia, compulsory heterosexuality, femme erasure, labels like butch/femme, and other things related to lesbians, as my respect for the lesbian community only grew and grew. And eventually I came to the epiphany that I was also a lesbian! Crazy, right? Well, if you’ve known me long enough then it’s not crazy at all lol. So, in conclusion, whenever I think of the headcanon that Isabela is a lesbian, especially a femme lesbian, it always makes me think of my own journey accepting my femme lesbian identity and how important and beautiful it is to me. Even if it’s just a headcanon, it makes me so happy to project that identity onto a character so similar to myself. It’s cute to imagine that I have something in common with my favorite character of all time even if it’s only in my head. It helps me feel seen and validated. So thank you, Isabela Madrigal! And to all of the other people out there who also hold and support this headcanon, thank you as well!

(obligatory disclaimer that this is only about my own personal experience and feelings towards the “Isabela is a lesbian” headcanon, it is NOT meant to be taken as gospel, nor to erase the inherently cultural message that the movie sends about generational trauma in Colombian families, it’s literally just me gushing, I KNOW very well that Isabela being a lesbian is NOT CANON by any means so please don’t try and come onto this post to derail and accuse me of being racist or only having the headcanon because she didn’t want to marry Mariano, which I don’t. if you do, then you will surely be blocked. this is my own personal anecdote and is to be taken as such, don’t read anything into this that isn’t there, thank you. 😉 ik that discourse is deader than ground beef now but i just wanted to say it just in case anyone gets any smart ideas.)

Queer Madrigals
I'm about to post a couple future!fic for Encanto, so I figured I'd take a minute to talk about my headcanons when it comes to their genders/sexualities.
The Obvious: I've posted somewhat in depth about what I think Bruno and Isabela's individual deals are, so I'm not going to really talk about it here, but yeah. Using the labels I am familiar with, I assume Bruno is demi, bi, and nonbinary, and that Isabela is a lesbian who ends up marrying a trans woman.
The Married: I mean, we can sit here all day and speculate, but the only real headcanons I got are that Juli is demi and Pepa has made out with more women than Bruno.
Mirabel: I've mentioned this, but I didn't really talk about it. Due to heteronormativity I suspect it wouldn't occur to Mirabel to question her sexuality until later in life when the Pride movement starts up. I think she's bi, possibly also demi, but most definitely not very focused on her love life (another reason why she doesn't think too hard about her sexuality). She's got shit to do and if somebody wants to date her they better speak up about it because she's got too many projects going on right now to bother with mind games. Mirabel ends up with a man mostly by coincidence, I saw somebody do the numbers and its just statistically more likely that a bi person will end up with somebody of the opposite sex (the math didn't factor for gender). I try to keep all of my headcanons grounded to peoples lived experiences, and this felt historically accurate.
Luisa: I think that if Luisa were a tumblrina she would end up being CIS+, but would have to go through the journey of exploring her gender due to societal biases. In the context of 1950's Colombia, she spends her youth hearing abuelas and tias talking about how she needs to be more feminine if she wants a husband, and struggles with that for a while. Luisa sings "I glow because I know what my worth is" and that's the sort of thing somebody says when they're on the other side of some serious self doubt, so I do think she had to deal with a bit of misogyny and body image issues. The thing is, Luisa likes the way she looks, and she's proud of what a hard worker she is, but she also wears ribbons in her hair and skirts instead of pants to work in. Furthermore, I suspect every bi person in the village, male or female, has a huge fucking crush on her because if she was a modern tumblrina people would be responding to pictures of her with that "not to be a lesbian but oh my god" stuff. I headcanon her as being technically cishet, but culturally gay due to people being people about the whole Woman with Biceps thing, if that makes sense. Once she starts allowing herself some free time, she dates every bi man in the village.
Dolores: Morosexual. No offense Mariano.
Camilo: You know how gender is a product of your culture and different societies throughout history have had different ideas of how many genders there are and what it means to be a man or woman? I think being able to turn into a woman at will would have an effect on Camilo's relationship with his gender. Like, I don't know if he would be full nonbinary, because I have never met a shapeshifter and asked them how they feel about gender, but I can't imagine he sees gender as a rigid binary. Like I said, I try to stay grounded in my headcanons, and I have zero idea what the lived experience of a shapeshifter is, soooooo...?
Antonio: I have spent a long time weighing the options here, his association with animals makes me think he would be the least traditional Madrigal, so I would like to think he'd end up in the least conventional relationship. I posted a list of headcanons where I floated the idea of him being poly, but I like the idea of him being aroace better. I stand by the rest of it, though. He marries a lesbian, let's her girlfriend move in with them, and he's just kinda there. Like, the women consider themselves married to each other and he's just some guy who talks to birds. Like, people think he has two wives so everybody assumes he's this total lady killer, they sing songs about how charming he is, rumors abound that he can make a girl swoon with a single smile, then you talk to him and he's just some guy. Occasionally, a woman will throw herself at him and he's like "No thanks" then starts having a conversation with her cat. Do you see my vision? Anyone? I don't care if nobody else thinks it's funny, because I'm giggling at my computer.
