when people complain about “too much gender-fluid/non-binary/trans rep is with shape shifters” I counter with: every gender-fluid/non-binary/trans person WANTS TO BE A SHAPE SHIFTER

I’m afraid my character has stereotypical traits. How do I avoid making them a caricature?
Is your character composed of several stereotypical traits, or is it just the one? Are they allowed to act and think in ways that are not confined to stereotypes? The more three-dimensional your character is, the less they are defined by the stereotypes.
One strategy that works in some cases is the “offset” character. This refers to weakening character A’s stereotype by including a character B of the same identity who isn’t stereotypical in that way. Say you have a selfless, “motherly” Black woman who looks after the cast. In addition to developing her own arc and her own desires, try adding a Black woman character with 0 maternal instinct who goes full steam ahead with her goals.
Trace your logic as to why you decided to give certain traits to a character of a certain identity. Our aptly named #trace your logic tag contains examples where we prompt the asker to interrogate their intentions behind certain ideas. Try to ask yourself the same questions.

I heard that some people were worried about animated shows with LGBT+ themes being cancelled so i want to remind you all that the Nimona film is coming this summer to Netflix
Tumblr media
This film was originally produced by Blue Sky studios and was later pushed back by Disney because of the LGBT+ themes. The production was taken later by other studio unrelated to Disney. The film is an adaptation of the comic "Nimona".
The premise goes like this:
"Nimona, a teenager with the power to shapeshift, is targeted by a knight for assassination. The knight's mission to kill Nimona becomes complicated when he is accused of a crime, and learns that Nimona may be able to exonerate him."
So, if you happen to have Netflix and are interested, please check this movie out. Specially considering how it was treated by Disney.

"Do you have to make being queer your whole personality?"
Yes. It angers you. It causes you discomfort... it's payback for the discomfort you've caused me. Its reversing my trauma into my queerness and superblasting it into you just because it pisses you off!

You can say that representation and diversity doesn't matter or that its 'cringe' or argue about how it is or isn't good enough, but tell that to my 50 year old mother. Who binge watched heartstopper (of her own accord) and is now on her 3rd re-watch. Tell that to my mother who has since sat me down and had serious conversations asking me about my experiences and apologising for how she reacted when I came out. Tell that to my mother who once said she would never understand trans people and that she was 'just too old for that' and couldn't accept them, and has now realised what that attitude does to kids. Who has made facebook posts about how beautiful the story is abd how she wishes it came out when she was a kid and told all of her friends to watch it for the sake of their own children. Who is now researching ways to promote inclusion and education surrounding gender identity in the primary school she works at.
You can say it doesn't matter and that people can never change. But you'll be wrong.

Can I just take a moment to give a big shoutout to Neil, Pterry and the team for REPRESENTATION!
It’s so natural in the show that we almost take it for granted. But in this world, we see characters of every race, every gender, every sex, every sexuality, every ability as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. Women have agency. Sex workers are treated with respect. Hooligans use Grindr. Middle-aged+ people are sexy. No-one ever jeers or laughs or demeans someone for what they ARE, just how they’re behaving.
And with a couple of exceptions, these characters aren’t the Hollywood ideal of beauty, but they ARE all beautiful in their own unique ways. Even demons and zombies with rotting faces and mouths full of flies. Everyone just shines from inside out.
