Her dark green guitar sat in its case as she carried it down the streets of London, eyes flicking in-between her phone and the cobblestones below her. She was trying not to trip over her feet as she walked faster than her feet would usually allow her. It was cold in London, but the sun was cutting through the clouds, soft rays hitting the ground below her, illuminating the dark stone floor. Crisp leaves of orange and brown and yellow, gently glided beneath her as her feet moved. When her shoes would fall against them they'd make a delightful crunch and she'd unknowingly smile at the sound.
Her phone rings in her hand, she smiles as she reads the name Matty put in her phone, rolling her eyes and reminding herself to change it (if not just to annoy him) she quickly picks up.
"Everything okay love?" She hears on the other side of the line, he sounds worried and she pulls the phone away from her ear, checking the time.
Shit, she was 15 minutes late.
Her happy bubble that this time of year created burst around her and pressure and anxiety crept in.
"Yeah yeah, um all good....I'm so sorry, I'm running late, I thought I'd walk instead of getting an Uber but... I'm a bit lost" she says, looking around her, trying to find something that would tell her where she was.
"Hey love it's okay. Just breathe okay? Send me your location, I'll come find you" he says. He finds her just over 5 minutes later, and she feels her nerves ease when she sees him.
He's dressed the most casually she's seen him so far, adorning a pair of black jeans and a black knit jumper, his hair not tamed by gel and sitting unruly on the top of his head. Of course he has a fag in hand, smiling as he walks towards her, he throws the cigarette to the floor a few steps away from her, opening his arms when he's closer.
She places her guitar case down and steps into his arms, sighing happily when he hugs her tightly. Her eyes squeeze shut, just wanting to be present with him, to be swept away in Matty, shutting the world out for a few moments.
"Hi sweetheart" he says, pulling back when he's done hugging her, still holding onto her shoulders gently. She wears a pair of blue wide leg denim jeans and she's wearing his hoodie under a long leather coat, which makes him smile widely. His mind floods with images of her, in his house, adorning that same hoodie or one similar, in his mind he's able to step forward and pick her up, her legs would hook around his waist as he spun her, she'd giggle and she'd pull away, and maybe... maybe she'd lean down and kiss him.
He forces the thought to the back of his mind, reminding himself that he couldn't think that way. It doesn't stop him from saying part of what was on his mind.
"Well don't you look adorable" he says making her smile. She looks down at the jumper, hands moving to tug at the hem of it.
"I figured wearing it was easier than carrying it" she explains and he nods. He watches as her eyes flick to his hair and she shows a toothy grin.
"I like this" she reaches her hand up to his hair, palm flat as she moves it across his hair, making him chuckle. She was surprised to feel how soft his hair was. He simply smiles, he doesn't thank her, his smile says it for him.
"Studio is this way, the guys will be joining us a little later" he says and she nods, he picks up the case for her, leading the way to the studio. The trip there isn't too far, a few twists and turns away and they're walking up the steps of the studio. Matty types in the code, allowing them into the building and he leads her upstairs into their own private room.
"I can take your coat if you'd like, it gets quite warm in here" Matty extends his hand, hoping she'd give it to him so he could see her clad in his jumper again. He can't help but smile widely as she slips it off and hands it to him, quickly retrieving her phone from the pocket before he takes it away.
He's in awe of her as she walks around the room, mumbling the name of the items, even the makes of some, standing before the microphone and gasping. He's entranced by the way he hair drifts behind her, as if it is failing to catch up with her movements. He finds the way her face holds a cute little smile endearing. He looks at her and he feels like he's known her for a lifetime.
"This is some fancy shit" he laughs at her words, coming to stand closer to her, overwhelmed by the way her scent occupies all of him, all his senses and the deep corners of his mind, she creeps in with it, seeping into his pores without an ounce of knowing... Unaware that she's doing it. But by god does she do it. She takes up all of him, and the guilt that befalls his being is too much of a burden to carry, so he pushes it down slightly (a lot), with the argument that he will deal with it later. The thought of how Ross would feel about this can be dealt with later. He knew his best friend and it was obvious he fancied her.
Did that make him a bad friend? He thinks, later he thinks.
"We only work with the best of the best here... Present company included" her eyes find his and almost glisten under the lights, taking his breath away. His eyes flick to her lips... No Matty.... Don't he thinks.
"Careful Matty.... I might think you're flirting with me" she wishes she would think before she thinks, they were the same that way. They acted on impulse sometimes.
I am, he thinks
There's a moment of silence from the man, a moment where she thinks she's nearly fucked it, but then he's laughing and she's smiling and everything returns to normal.
"Seriously though Matty, this stuff is impressive" she says, walking over to a piano that was positioned in the corner of the room.
"You play?" So far he had only seen her play guitar and he wouldn't have been surprised if she was multi versed.
"I do yeah... My big brother taught me when I was like..." She pauses, fingers drifting along the keys but not pressing down, eyes flicking up to Matty who was standing directly in front of the piano now.
"Four?" She questions, sitting down on the stool as her fingers finally press down on the keys and she plays a familiar tune. He chuckles and rolls his eyes as she begins playing 'The 1975' off of their recent album. She laughs and her fingers halt on the keys.
"Kidding kidding..." She then begins playing another familiar song, another one of theirs, "Mine". He watches her as her fingers move effortlessly across the ivories, gently caressing the keys as if they'd break if she'd apply more pressure. It somehow made the sound ring out more peacefully, a song that he wrote and already thought was quite sweet sounded sweeter when played by her.
Her eyes find his and she pauses, smiling a shy smile up at him, tucking a piece of hair that had slipped in front of her eyes behind her ear.
"Do you know my entire discography off by heart darling?" He says, voice full of awe and wonder. Eyes just the same. The pet name has her blushing and her mouth opens slightly before she forces herself to shut it again and answer his question.
"Maybe..." She says, giggling after her words have rung out, making him smile widely, a small crease appearing at the side of his lips on his cheeks, and his eyes almost sparkling.
"Sing me one of yours..." He leans against the edge of the piano, placing an elbow on the surface as his head fits into the palm of his hand, eagerly awaiting for her to play something. He looks like a kid like this, the sight makes her heart ache, she wish she knew him when he was younger, despite it being impossible given the age gap. She couldn't help but think they would've gotten along even as kids.
"Okay well... This is something I wrote with Jay, our drummer" she reminds him, Matty nods. The truth is, although he was sometimes forgetful,he wouldn't forget a single thing she told him, he couldn't, she had captivated him.
"Do you write with him a lot?" Matty asks out of curiosity.
"Not really... I mostly write on my own... Sometimes Clara and Abbie will help me with a verse or two. I prefer writing alone" she explains and Matty can't help but let out a little "oh" at the revelation.
"Why's that?"
"Less scrutiny I guess... It took me a lot to get to the point where I don't scrumple up the pages and throw them away... My lyrics make me cringe sometimes" Matty laughs as she does, not able to help the sound that comes from him, not when when she's laughing. Then he realises she's deflecting again and he frowns.
"Okay show me" he says and she begins playing a song. It's a simple melodic structure, quite bare and vulnerable. But he feels it doesn't need much else apart from that, not when she closes her eyes and begins to sing. Matty hears the door open and swings his head around to see Ross.
He's early.
He places a finger against his lips and ushers him inside. The tall man tries his hardest to walk quietly, flinching when a floorboard creaks. But y/n is too engrossed in her song to hear.
"I was a child of the night, Praying for a guiding light, Living in a world of black and white , I wish for the day that I might, Be set free and allowed to take flight" she sings, her voice is almost ethereal as she sings, it's almost as if she transcends to something more when she sings and they're more enthralled by it.
"The sky is turning grey, The stars begin to fade away, On the wings of yesterday, We are all condemned to fate, There's no hiding place in your grave" she finishes, fingers halting on the keys and eyes slowly fluttering back open. She almost swears when she sees Ross standing next to Matty.
"Wow" they both say in unison and she blushes deeply.
"Hi to you too" her words are directed at Ross and he smiles down at her. Her heart is picking up at the sight of him, and there it is again, Ross, taking over her entire being. Her eyes fall to those hands and she struggles to tear them away.
"That was amazing, really beautiful" his words have her blushing deeper and she looks away, feeling exposed under the both of their stares.
"Thanks" she says awkwardly, standing from the piano, walking towards the man.
"Hi" he says, looking down at her and placing his arms around her shoulders for a quick hug. They pull away far too quickly for either of their liking, but what with Matty staring at them, it had to be done.
"So what did you think Matty?" She ask, turning back to the curly haired man who still stands, mouth agape.
"I don't think it's going to get better than that... I think just the piano and your vocals is all that track needs" he says, his producer brain taking over and making her laugh.
"It was beautiful y/n" he then says, making her smile.
Her phone rings from where it's tucked away into Matty's jumper. Ross' attention is then drawn to the fabric, unable to help the unsettling jealousy that runs through his body.
"Hi Ab" he hears her say.
His eyes flick back to Matty, who takes in his best friend's look and frowns, mouthing a (maybe feigned) innocent "what?" to the man.
Ross simply shakes his head, looking back to Y/n who is talking on the phone.
"Oh really?" Her eyes flick to the guys and she pulls the phone from her ear "apparently Abbie, Clara and Jay ran into George at some coffee place, they're round the corner" she explains the both of them nod.
"Okay... Perfect... See you in 5. Love you bye" she says, hanging up after that.
"I'll go down to let them in, need a fag anyway" Matty explains, leaving the bassist and y/n alone. She walks over to her guitar case, unzipping it and carrying it over to a leather sofa in the studio, placing it in her lap.
Ross is still standing in the centre of the room and she can't quite sense how he's feeling, but his eyes are trained on her. She taps the space next to her, smiling up at him. He comes to join her then, watching as she tunes the guitar easily.
"Pretty guitar" he says.
"Thanks... My brother brought it for my birthday about 6 years ago" she explains "I had a light blue one before that... Still have it actually, just prefer this one... Feels more special to me"
"Seems like you're brother is quite the musician himself then" Ross says making her smile.
"Practically taught me everything I know... Apart form bass... As I said before... couldn't hack it" she says, strumming the strings to make sure it was in tune.
"I remember... Tiny hands" he says making her laugh again, his hand brushing against hers but not holding it. He couldn't.
"Is he good? Your brother?" He asks.
"Why? Scared he's better than you Macdonald" she teases. She doesn't feel a pang in her chest when she speaks about him, not like she used to.
"Never" she laughs at that, tilting her head back. He swears his heart skips a beat at the sight, her hair wafting against her shoulders and sending a wave of her scent his way. She smelt like vanilla and orange blossom and coffee and white flowers and fresh linen and something he couldn't pinpoint. Something he had never smelt before, something so uniquely her and he was addicted.
"Yeah he's great, taught me how to play piano and guitar... god awful voice though" she says, joking and making him laugh again. She swears she'd do anything to make him laugh, anything to watch the way his eyes crease and those dimples appear.
"We can't all do it all like you y/n" he says making her roll her eyes.
"Don't flatter me Macdonald... Give me your bass and I'll show you how bad I can be" a deafening silence rings after that as they both take in her words. Words that really didn't mean to sound so... Sexual. His mind clouds with sinful images, images of her, mouth agape, head thrown back, him in-between her thighs as her nails claw his back.
She can't help but imagine her on her knees for him, looking up at him through her lashes as he grips the back of her head. Considering the amount of times she had told herself that they couldn't, her mind clearly had other opinions on it.
Their mouths fall open for one second, two seconds, three seconds, four seconds. Before they're both clutching their stomachs as they laugh loudly, willing away the unholy thoughts they were previously having.
"I swear' she says in-between their laughter "I did not... Mean it to come out like that" the door swings open and the people at the door stare at them like they're crazy.
They try to calm themselves down, breathing heavily in an attempt to halt their laughter.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry" she says, finally managing to stop laughing and stand up to greet her bandmates.
"Hi" she says as she hugs them one my one. Clara and Abbie look over her shoulder to find Ross', raising their eyebrows up at y/n before she hugs them both.
"I've seen you've met Matty and George" she says and they all nod, Clara and Abbie both wiggling their eyebrows at the girl.
"That just leaves..." She begins, turning her body slightly to make way for Ross, but then he's right next to her, one hand on her back and one reaching out to shake their hands.
"Ross... MacDonald, lovely to meet you" he says, shaking their hands.
"You too mate" Jay says, smiling widely at him which shocks y/n. She shares a knowing look with the other girls and they shrug.
"Is Hann not here? Sorry... Adam" they hear Abbie say making them all chuckle.
"No, he said he'd be happy to help on any guitar bits if needed, but I think we've got that covered don't you?" Matty asks and Abbie smiles at him.
"I like you already" she says, stepping forward to clasp a hand around Mattys shoulder.
"Let's get started then" they all find a comfortable position round the room, talking amongst themselves for a few minutes.
Y/n watches as Jay finds his place behind the drum set they have set up in the studio and she feels happy when she sees George stand with him, watching as he does a few fills. Y/n can see that George is impressed and she smiles proudly.
When his eyes meet hers she mouths an "I know right" and then turns away from the both of them, allowing them to talk among each other and get to know each other more. Eventually Jay lets George take his place and show him a few things and y/ns eyes flick up, shocked that he's allowing it.
"That is not like Jay" she says aloud, Abbie and Clara agreeing. Matty and Ross both look at the girls confused.
"You'll understand when you get to know him..." They hear Abbie say as she tunes her guitar.
Y/n watches as Ross moves over to Clara and she hears them talking about bass stuff. She can't help but smile and feel thankful that so far this is going well.
She places her guitar down to remove the hoodie, now far too hot with all the people in the room, Matty pouts at her from across the room and she chuckles and she shakes her head, throwing it at him and making him laugh, the pout falling from his face. She's now adorning a simple black tank top and Ross' eyes can't help but drift over to her.
He literally has to shake his head to get his mind out of the gutter (again) but she notices and sends a smirk his way making him chuckle and shake his head again.
Her eyes are back on her guitar and she closes them for a second "get your shit together y/n" she thinks "you're working with them now, you can't keep doing this" she thinks.
"Ready"? She's pulled out of her own thoughts when a hand lands on her shoulder, she looks up to see Matty and she nods up at him.
They begin to talk through different things, y/n and the band show them some more songs and Matty, George and Ross give their input. Some ideas are loved, some are welcomed and some are discarded straight away with a laugh. They begin working on the song Ross remembers reading when he and y/n went and got coffee.
He learns that they titled it "changing roads". It's the first track they work on together and by the end of the day, it's recorded in its entirety, all edits made.
"Think that's the quickest we've ever finished a track before" Matty says, slumped against the black leather sofa. At some point Y/ns band slowly filtered out, having to attend their shifts at their day jobs.
"You know after this is released they're going to have to quit their jobs" she hears George say, making her smile widely.
"Hold your horses G... Don't get our hopes up" she says and she smiles, liking that she called him his nickname but also smiling because she didn't realise how amazing they were.
"I should really get going... Got a girlfriend to see" George says, standing up from his place on the floor, he walks over to her and she stands, meeting him for a hug.
"Don't forget how amazing you are... Also Charli wants you to come over for dinner" she smiles and hugs him again before he's leaving.
"Okay" she says happily, nodding up at him. He then leaves, leaving Ross, Matty and y/n.
Matty places a pair of earphones back on his head and asks her to click play again, wanting to hear the track once more. She leans over the sound board, clicking play, from where Ross sits,he snaps a picture of her and then of Matty.
She places another set of earphones over hear ears, moving to sit next to Ross who drapes his arm over the back of the sofa, where she sits.
The three of them listen together, all smiling sleepy little smiles as they listen to the track. She listens to herself sing and for once she's impressed by the sound of her voice, and the harmonies the band offer.
"You'll never stop these changing roads. This is the way our story goes" she hears Matty sing making her look over at him. His hands are crossed, held in-between his open legs.
"This is really good" Ross says, both y/n and Matty's head flicking to him, they both nod, they all smile.
She feels her stomach flutter, butterflies erupting. What was she doing?

Pairing: Eddie Munson x fem!reader - best friends to lovers.
Summary: Fluff! You and Eddie have been best friends for years now but than unspoken feelings start coming to light.
Warnings: No use of y/n, smoking, swearing. Please tell me if I forgot any!
- - - - -
Eddie closes his locker and turns to face you.
“Hey, did you do today’s homework?” He looks at you.
You sigh. “don’t even get me started on it, I did like one page and than I got bored.” You laugh.
Eddie chuckles. “Can I get the one page you did?”
You roll your eyes and smile slightly. “Yeah, sure.”You grab your book so he can copy your answers.
Eddie never does his homework, you’re always the one doing it for you both but you don’t really mind. That’s what best friends are for right? To help each other out.
“Thanks, I owe you.” Eddie smiles.
“That’s what you always say.” You smile back at him.
The school bell rings, you sigh as you grab your bag from the ground ready to head to your last class of the day.
“You wanna hang out after class? I got the good stuff with me again.” He grins while whispering the last part of the sentence.
“Yeah, the usual spot?” You grin back at him.
“Yeah of course, but I’ll just wait for you at your locker.” He answers.
“Okay okay, I’ll see you after class than.” You smile while you turn around and start walking to your class. You hear Eddie say a quick bye as he walks the other way to his class.
You and Eddie sadly don’t have many classes together, you’re always stuck being bored in between all the snobs in your class. Just as right now. You don’t have that many friends, Eddie is your only real friend and you’re happy to have him, to be able to call him your best friend.
You’re waiting for the time to pass so class can be over but it’s taking way to long. The endless talking of your teacher boring you to death. You could definitely fall asleep right now if you wanted too. After what seems an eternity the bell finally rings and you grab your stuff quickly and head out.
Eddie is already waiting at your locker when he sees you approach him. “There you are.” He smiles.
You walk over to him and lean against your locker as you sigh. “that was so fucking boring.”
“Tell me about it, Mr. Clark gave me this whole bullshit speech about not having my homework finished again.” He sighs as he looks at you.
You give him a look of sympathy as you smile. “Yeah we could really use some of that good stuff that you brought with.”
“Yeah, we really do. Let’s get out of here.” Eddie says as he starts walking.
You guys always go to the same spot. A spot behind the football field in the woods. It’s calm and no one usually comes there expect the two of you, so you made it your usual hang out spot.
As you walk next to him you look at Eddie, you don’t know why, you just like looking at him. The way his hair flows in the wind, the way his eyes are so focused on the space around him. You don’t think he notices but he does, he always does. Just like you always notice him staring at you.
“Why’re you looking at me?” Eddie says as he faces you.
You turn your face to the ground as you feel your cheeks heating up slightly. You look back at him, “can’t I look at you?”
“I mean yeah you can, but you just stared at me for like a good 5 seconds.” He chuckles.
You roll your eyes and smile slightly. “So? You stare at me all the time, it’s not that weird.”
You can see Eddie starting to blush slightly when you tell him that. “I don’t stare, I just glance.” He responds.
“Sure.” You say sarcastically while turning back to look in front of you.
After a moment of silence he speaks up. “You’re just easy to look at.”
You smile. “Well same goes for you.” You say while turning to look at him again.
“I’m not that good looking.” He says while he brushes his hair to the side as he walks.
“Shut up Eddie, you know you are. You also know that I find you good looking so don’t say that bullshit.” You laugh.
“True, I also think you’re very pretty.” He grins.
You blush slightly as you roll your eyes.
“You’re blushing now.” Eddie says teasingly.
“Yeah no shit.” You smile.
“I’m gonna be honest, you’re too damn cute when you’re flustered.” He turns to look at you with a smile.
You laugh. “You’re only gonna fluster me more if you keep this shit up.”
You walk over to the bench, your hang out spot, and sit down.
“Fine, I’ll stop flirting with you, for now.” Eddie sits down on the bench next to you.
You roll your eyes at the “for now” as you look at him.
“Hey, at least I said for now instead of never.” Eddie laughs.
“Fair enough.” You laugh too.
Eddie looks at you as he leans back against the bench.
“You wanna smoke now?” You smile.
Eddie sits back up. “Sure, let me grab it.” He searches in his bag and pulls out a joint and a lighter. “Gotcha” he says laughing. He lights it up and takes a hit, inhaling the smoke and blowing it out sighing. “Yeah I really needed that.” He hands it over to you.
“Thanks.” You grin as you also take a hit.
You hand it back to Eddie and he takes another hit from the joint.
“What else are we gonna do?” He looks at you and hands you back the joint again.
You take another hit and exhale the smoke. “I don’t know, get high I guess?” You laugh.
Eddie laughs along with you before taking another puff from the joint. “Sounds like a good plan to me.”
He hands it over to you again “This is some good stuff.”
“I know, it’s the best. It immediately works. The guy I got it from said it worked wonders.” Eddie says laughing.
You and Eddie make eye contact for a few seconds before you turn away and look in front of you.
“You wanna hear a fun fact?” He says randomly.
You laugh. “Sure.”
“Do you know the song ‘The Kids Aren’t Alright’ by ‘The Offspring’?” He says looking at you.
“Yeah duh.” You say.
“So you know the part that says. The kids are alright, the kids are alri-i-ight.” He sings the lyrics and you giggle a little as he continues talking “I just recently learned that there’s a deeper meaning to the line other than just telling us that the kids are doing alright.”
“And that is?” You raise your eyebrow.
Eddie inhales again and pauses for a second.
“That line is basically telling us that the kids are not alright, the world around them is crumbling apart and they aren’t fully aware of why.”
You just look at him for a second before you burst out laughing.
He looks at you confused as he says “what’s so funny?”
“Well isn’t that fucking obvious.” You continue laughing.
“Why is that so goddamn funny?” Eddie says as he looks at you and also starts laughing.
“I don’t know I guess it’s the weed. I just can’t stop laughing.” You say while coming down from the laughter.
“Yeah yeah, blame it on the weed.” He chuckles.
Eddie smiles at you as he takes another puff and then passes the joint back to you.
After a moment of silence he speaks up again. “I swear, you’re too adorable when you’re laughing.”
You chuckle. “Well I guess we’re back to flirting now.”
“It’s not flirting I’m just telling you the truth.” Eddie holds in the smoke for a second before letting it out as he grins at you.
You grin back as you roll your eyes.
Eddie looks up at the sky. “Hey, you wanna just lay down and look up at the clouds?”
“Sure why not.” You say smiling.
Eddie lies down on the grass and looks up at the clouds. “This is actually really soothing.”
You lay down next to him. “It is, especially when your high as fuck.”
You both laugh and look at each other.
“You aren’t wrong.” He sighs peacefully as he looks back at the sky.
You can’t help but stare at Eddie, he looks so peaceful looking up at the clouds. You smile as you turn back to look up at the sky too.
“Hey, do you see that cloud? It looks like a bunny.” Eddie points to a cloud he’s looking at.
You move closer to him to see where he’s pointing at. If only you could hear Eddie’s heart going faster right now. “No it doesn’t.” You turn your head a little. “Oh wait it actually does.” You laugh.
Eddie chuckles. “It’s all about the angle babe.”
You blush at the nickname, hoping he doesn’t notice.
“This is probably the most peaceful I’ve been for a long time.” He says after a few minutes.
You look at Eddie again and smile. “I know me too.”
Eddie turns back at you as he smiles. “Hey..”
“Yeah?” You make eye contact.
Eddie looks down at the grass and looks back up at you. “Y’know.. You’re kinda cute when you don’t realize it.”
You look back up at the sky and than back to Eddie. “Stop this Eddie, you don’t have to keep saying these things.” You smile at him and your cheeks are getting red again.
“Just saying the truth.” Eddie looks over at you as his face slowly turns red too. “Well.. I mean.. you are.. like actually adorable.” Eddie looks down at the grass, embarrassed and blushing really hard.
You’re blushing like crazy too now. “I know you tell me that like six times a day.” You giggle.
Eddie sighs and looks back at you. “Oh whatever, I’m still gonna keep telling you. Same goes for me telling you that you’re pretty, beautiful, amazing.”
“I know you will.” You smile softly.
After a not too long but comfortable silence Eddie sits up. “I really need to tell you something.”
He looks nervous, scared even.
You also sit up. “What is it Eddie?” You look a little nervous too now. Not knowing what to expect.
“Well, I’ve kinda had the biggest crush on you for forever honestly.” Eddie’s face turns red instantly.
Your heart is about to burst out of your chest. You want to kiss him, tell him you’ve been in love with him for years. You never thought Eddie would feel the same way as you do, even with all the flirting and stuff. We’re you really that blind to see he was into you too this whole time?
You stutter trying to find the right words to say. “I’m…” you look at him not knowing what to say.
Eddie just can’t speak, he’s never felt so nervous in his life. “Do.. you feel the same way..?” He finally speaks up.
You look at him and smile. “I’ve been in love with you for years dumbass.” You giggle.
Eddie sighs of relief and laughs a little. “God I thought I was about to die, the anticipation was killing me.”
You laugh. “I’m sorry, you had me frozen there for a minute.”
You fidget with your hands as you look up at him. “I never thought you felt the same, I’ve been wanting to tell you for so long but I thought that would just ruin our friendship so I kept quiet for so long.”
Eddie looks you in the eyes as he smiles. “How could I not feel the same when there’s so much to love about you? Your eyes.. and your laugh.. and the way you tease people.. and your beautiful smile and I could go on and on.” He says laughing.
“I’m really happy you feel the same way.” He keeps the eye contact.
“Me too.” You smile.
Eddie holds your gaze for a few seconds before he leans in and kisses you. You immediately kiss him back. After a few seconds you back away for air and he looks at you smiling. You kiss him again and he puts his hand on your cheek while his other hand caresses your back. You feel him smile into the kiss and you do the same. When you both back away he can’t help but smile his brightest smile. He intertwines your hands and you look at him as you kiss his cheek.
“I just felt like you needed to know, and if I didn’t tell you all that, I was gonna regret it for the rest of my life.” Eddie looks at you.
“And I’m damn happy you did.” You giggle.
Eddie grins. “And you make one hell of a kisser, you’re like.. the best kiss I’ve ever had.”
You smile. “Shut up.” you push his chest slightly. “You’re gonna make me never ending blush.”
Eddie laughs. His free hand stroking your hand that’s intertwined with his. “Soooo… does this mean that we’re, you know….” He looks you in the eyes.
“You mean a couple?” You laugh.
“Yeah I mean a couple.” He responds immediately.
“Yes Eddie Munson, you are my boyfriend.”
“And you are my girlfriend.”

"If you close that door I swear you'll never see me again." Matty spoke through a clenched jaw, looking at the city view through the patio. Everything moving looked like tiny ants in slow motion from the twelfth floor of his penthouse. As he looked down, so much bigger than them all, he felt as if he was the king.
Elvira stood between the door, watching him.
"I mean it." He said.
"What if I don't care?" She asked, her body temperature warming up to the frustration that was increasing with great magnitude. Why couldn't he just be easy on her? Why couldn't he be gentle, loving, and tender? Why was it so hard to apologize...
"You do." He said.
The calmness in his tone provoked her. She walked back into the apartment, throwing her purse onto the couch and slamming the door. Matty's mouth formed a smirk, his eyes still fixed through the patio's view.
"You're selfish..." Elvira longed for the words, and the courage to spit them out. "I..."
"What? Say it." He stood up and took a step toward her, crossing his arms.
And there it was... "I hate you!"
The words she had never thought or spoken. Never had she felt an aching heart, until she'd been the one to throw the knife that clearly cut through Matty's. He turned around, slowly walking towards her. She could tell he was upset, she didn't know if it was pain or hatred back that he was masking but it was ever there.
"It's not like I'm back into it. Besides, don't think I dunno about that little sack in your makeup bag." Matty grabbed his leather jacket off the arm rest of the sofa.
"Where are you going?" Elvira watched him, her face flushing shades of pinks soon purples from trying to hold every bit of the tantrum she desired to throw back.
"I'll be back tonight...when you're calm." He said, pulling a box of cigs and a pack of matches from the pockets.
"I only still have it because I didn't know what to do with it, and it's perfectly good ... so I didn't want to just throw it out... I know how stupid it sounds now that I'm saying it out loud, but if it stayed there untouched for three weeks, then you can see that I've kept my word. You haven't."
He ignored her and walked out of the door, leaving.
Elvira didn't move, her heart racing in her chest, so rapidly it ached. She went to the bedroom and grabbed their cocaine stash from her vanity, unbundling it shakily. She broke it down on the table with her library card, scooping up a tiny bump at it's corner and holding it up to her nose.
Why should he be the only one who gets break from this Hell? They were supposed to be in this together. The good times, and when the good times have gone bad, along the pain of refrainment. They were meant to weather the storm together. The trust to keep one another afloat was broken. Everything they had worked to get out of was drowning them slowly.
Elvira looked herself in the mirror, swiping the traces of powder from her nostrils. Guilt tightly cloaked itself around her. She tried so hard... she was almost there... and now she had taken herself all the way back to the beginning. It was Matty's fault. Everything was Matty's fault...
Elvira pulled her hair out of her face and tied it back. She then studied her face, never had she looked at her own reflection and not been able to recognize it. She held out her arms, watching goosebumps sparatically form against her skin like that of flowers from a field of grass. She stepped out of the bedroom, enjoying the silence of being alone and high... She looked out through the patio window, watching the sun begin to set, hues of reds and oranges slow dancing in the sky.
As she began to imagine what it would feel like to take a leap, she closed her eyes. It felt good, the wind beating her face as she'd soar from her penthouse which rested twelve stories high over the city. She had never imagined such a thing before... just like earlier she had never said such things as she hated Matty before. She no longer knew her own mind.
Her daze was broken. Elvira's heart thumped as she heard keys having a go at the front door. Matty walked through, looking at her.
"I'm sorry, Elvie." He looked at her, closing the door behind him genlty.
Elvira's eyes burned as the tears she fought to hold back swelled and overflowed within them. Matty walked over to her, holding his arms out.
"Why did you leave me hanging to get better by myself? I need you... we're supposed to stick together... you promised me..." She whined, clinging onto him. The drip of cocaine slipped from the back of her nostrils and down her throat.
"It's hard for me too. I can say no, no, and no, and somehow, it still ends up in my hand. Or something ends up in my hand... anything ... does."
Elvira reached up and stroked his jaw genlty as she noticed it shaking, as he too was high.
He freed his face from her grasp, "just love me." He studied her as he spoke to her, noticing the death of the fire that usually burned for their love inside her dying. "If that's what you wanna do..."
"Oh," she saw where he was going with it, "I don't want to decide the fate of you and me when I'm high."
She used to be be able to make this decision easily. It was inevitable that she would love him every time. Now she had to choose to.
"I want to love you."

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The 1975 (Band), Taylor Swift (Musician) Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: George Daniel/Matthew Healy, Matthew Healy/Taylor Swift, Matthew Healy&Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss/Taylor Swift Characters: Taylor Swift, Matthew Healy Additional Tags: Fake/Pretend Relationship Summary:
“As I was saying, after the incident at your concert last night,” Tree restarted and Matty opened his mouth as if to question what the incident was, but was silenced by a glare from Jamie. “We need to move the speculation away from Taylor’s relationship with Karlie, and what many are claiming was a heated kiss shared between them, and onto her relationship with a new male suitor. Which is you.”
“Me?!” Matty exclaimed, bursting out laughing, it seemed his role in the cluster fuck had finally clicked. “You want Taylor Fucking Swift to pretend to date me, to save her image, because she got caught kissing her girlfriend at one of our gigs?” He ran his fingers through his hair, laughing even harder. “Are you guys aware that I am a raging alcoholic with a slight drug problem? I don’t think being linked to me will help rehabilitate anyones image.”

(2) Your Very Own Mirror
She sits in the Dirty Hit office, Jamie sat opposite her, Matty sitting next to Jamie, the pair looking at a bunch of stacked papers. The pair had been texting constantly since they met up for coffee, talking about music, speaking about their songs and their mutual interests in other artists. She explained how Fleetwood Mac was her favorite band, he informed her that they were one of Ross' favorites too. He spoke a lot about Ross, she was unsure what the intention was, she secretly hoped the bearded man asked Matty to slip him into conversation but the rational part of her brain told her it was more likely that it was just general chit chat. Mates supporting mates.
She liked how Matty and her were at the moment, despite not knowing each other for very long at all, he got her, she felt like he had very quickly become one of her best friends. Her favorite times were late at night, when he'd randomly call her and ask "have you heard of this thing love?" And began talking about some niche topic. She also loved when he'd call her to talk about music, to recommend a song he'd listened to and thought she'd like. Each call proved that she was at the forefront of his mind and she was becoming quite accustomed to the idea.
She was sat picking at her nails, only noticing the bad behavior when she feels blood being drawn from the skin, she rolls her hand up into a fist, hiding the abuse she'd given to herself, opting to pick at the varnish of the other hand.
"Are you okay love?" He asks, watching as he picked at her black nail varnish, small flecks falling somewhere unseen. He's by her side in the next second, a look of pure worry on his face. His presence near her, closer to her, made her feel calmer, he quietened her ever noisy brain.
"Yeah yeah... Sorry just a bit nervous I guess" she says making him nod but he can tell she's withholding the truth. He places his hand in hers and squeezes gently, before letting her go.
"Don't be... We're the ones that should be nervous" he says making her confused.
"How so?"
"You might say no" Jamie speaks, placing his phone down on the table.
"Let's get this started then shall we"
The three of them settle on a deal of sorts, a trial period, where Matty, George and Ross (all who agreed prior) would book in some studio time with Y/n and her band. The idea was, that after they had established some tracks, and worked with the boys, if she liked it and felt like the label offered what her and the band was looking for, she would then sign to it. Jamie explained that he hoped she would sign to the label and if they did, they could support the 1975 for a few shows. All of the talk was very exciting but she was also incredibly nervous.
❀•°❀°•❀•°❀°•❀•°❀°•❀•°❀°•❀ •°❀°•❀•°❀°•❀
They all sit around the brown leather booth in a hipster looking bar in Soho, round the corner from where y/n and the band usually perform. She's dressed comfortably in a pair of black jeans and a black knitted sleeveless turtle neck, when she left the house earlier to attend the meeting, it was fairly warm. Outside was now far too chilly for her liking and she cursed herself for not bringing a jacket. Matty had walked with her to this particular bar, texting the rest of the band to join them.
"Cheers" Ross says, clinking his glass against hers and Matty's, George who was sitting across from her raising his glass to her and smiling widely.
"To the new recruit" Matty says making her chuckle and shake her head.
"Hey I haven't agreed yet!" Her words make everyone chuckle and she doesn't miss the way Matty raises his eyebrows at her, as if to say "sureeee"
"Yeah I heard all about your bargaining... Ballsy" George says, the word having been used to describe her far too many times now.
"Got to protect myself and the band haven't I?" She says and they all laugh again.
"So we start making this album with you and you'll consider letting the label sign you?" George asks and she nods.
"Wow... You really are cool... Charli was right" George says making everyone laugh.
"Speaking of' George says, standing up as the black haired girl strides towards him, he meets her in a hug and they share a quick peck, George murmuring a "hi baby" which makes y/n smile warmly, before she's turning towards y/n.
"Hey bitch!" She says, pulling y/n up and hugging her.
"Hi!" She's says, hugging Charli tightly. They weren't the closest but she always loved being around Charli and her friends and was very fond of her, wanting to be closer with her. The girls sit back down and they all talk amongst themselves. Matty talks to Charli and George as Ross speaks with Y/n.
Adam eventually joins and Y/n stops her conversation with Ross abruptly, looking at Adam who was now greeting Matty.
"Hann this is y/n, the artist we told you about. Y/n this is Adam" Matty says and she stands, reaching a hand out to him who shakes it with a smile.
"Great to finally meet you, the guys haven't shut up about you to be honest" he says and she smiles, mouth falling open and then shutting again, at a loss for words.
"You okay love?" Matty asks and she shakes her head, composing herself.
"I can't lie... I'm kind of freaking out, I'm a huge fan..." She says to Adam making everyone laugh.
"You're one of the reasons I started playing guitar, you're mad talented" she hates the way she sounds like a cliche fan but she couldn't help it. Matty raises his eyebrows at her and she sees the cogs turning in his brain, he looks at her and she knows he's mentally saying "Adam your fave then?" But she shakes her head at him.
"Wow, thank you, that means a lot. The guys showed me some videos of you and your band playing, you're sick!" She smiles and blushes at his words, sitting back down next to Ross and continuing their conversation.
"He's right you know... You're really talented, amazing really... How long have you been playing guitar?" The way he so casually compliments her had her heart fluttering and she nearly stutters over her words- nearly.
She feigns confidence as she says "since I was 15, the summer after I discovered your band... I tried bass but it wasn't for me" and he laughs.
"How so?" He asks.
"my hands are too small and I struggled to be honest"
"don't be silly, let me see" he says, lifting her hand and placing it against his. The sensation is instant for both of them, fire igniting, sparks flying, electric buzzing, hand against hand but it's as if their souls have been ripped open for the other to see.
Their mouths both fall open as they touch, neither look at their hands, too busy looking into each other's eyes, occasionally flicking down to each other's lips. She feels the warmth of his hand against her and she blushes.
"You're right... You've got tiny hands" he struggles to get the words out, having to swallow a few times before they even come out. She smiles at his teasing, fingers closing around his hand, tugging it towards her before she opens her hand again, inspecting it closer.
"Or you've just got giant hands Macdonald" he smirks at her then, eyes finally moving away from her lips and down at their hands. Her mouth sits slightly agape as she takes in his hand, eyes falling on the veins and callouses there.
Their moment is interrupted by the buzz of her phone which sits in her lap, her eyes flick down to look at it before she looks back up at Ross.
"Sorry' she says quietly, reluctantly letting go of his hand and reaching for her phone. His hand wraps back around his glass, bringing the liquid back up to his lips to take a sip.
He watches her over the rim of his glass, seeing the way her eyebrows furrow as she reads the text she received. He doesn't like the way she's huffing as she reads it, or the roll of her eyes before she's placing her phone face down onto table, drawing her attention back to him.
She seems almost withdrawn when her eyes find his again, and the smile she directs his way seems forced.
"Everything okay love?" Her stomach flutters at the nickname and she has to stop herself from gasping. She's worried her voice will fail her so she simply nods, but with one look from Ross, a raise of his eyebrows and a tilt of his head, she's spilling all.
"Sorry it's just the band... They didn't want to come to the meeting with me - said I can make the decision as I'm the 'frontman' which I already fucking hate... Which is just stupid anyway because we're a band, were supposed to make these decisions together, and now Jay, drummer, is lecturing me saying I should just sign the contract... That doing studio time with you guys before is a waste of time" she rants, her words are rushed but Ross manages to catch every single one without fail, she buffs at the end of her words, breath fast and shallow.
"Love" he says, her heart fluttering again, picking up tenfold when he takes her hand back in his "breathe for a second" he watches as she inhales deeply before exhaling, her shoulders slumping slightly after she does.
"Better?' she nods.
"Good... I'm sorry darling, that sucks... For what it's worth, I think it's really brave of you.. and super cool too" he says, a clear smirk resting against his lips as he speaks.
"Really?" she barely realises that her hand is still in his, only noticing when he follows his "yeah" with a squeeze of her hand.
"I think you're just trying to do what's best for your band and although they're putting all the pressure on you to make that decision, I think you're making the best one... Just looking out for them" he says and she's the one squeezing his hand now, silently thanking him.
"I'm glad you get it... Thank you Ross" she says, debating whether to pull her hand away from his despite not wanting to. It seemed like it was a matter of who would break first.
"You're welcome sweetheart... Anytime" her breath hitches again at the new nickname, this time not going unnoticed by the bassist, who raises his eyebrows, but doesn't say anything, which she feels grateful for, she really didn't want to feel mortified right now. Instead he surprises her with a question.
"Fancy going outside for a bit?" He asks, eyes never leaving hers, the intensity of his eye contact making her mouth fall open slightly. She nods as her eyes flick from his eyes to his mouth.
They stand from the table, thankfully everyone is too engrossed in their conversation to realise and they quietly slip outside the pub. The cold air immediately makes her skin prick up and goosebumps rise to the surface, she wraps her hands around herself, running them up and down her arms in an attempt to keep herself warm.
Wordlessly, Ross shrugs off his jacket, moving forward and draping it over her frame, the fabric almost immediately drowning her, but the warmth she feels (weather from the item of the clothing, or from the fact she's wearing his jacket) makes her smile. His hands don't leave the lapels straight away, tugging gently until she's standing closer to him.
Maybe it was because Ross was usually quiet, his actions this evening were taking her by surprises, pleasantly so.
"You look cute in my clothes" the confession makes her blush and she has to take a step back, sighing deeply. "Where are you going?" He says, pulling her towards him again. He notices her breath is heavy again.
"What's up, am I making you uncomfortable?" He goes to retreat but she stops him, shaking her head as she looks up at him
"No... Not at all... You're just surprising me is all" she admits and he smirks.
"How so?"
"The pet names, the- the touching... The forwardness... Just didn't expect it from you to be honest... You're usually quiet" she says and he nods.
"I'm not usually this forward to be honest..."
"What is it about me then?" She challenges.
"Everything" the one word answer has her breath hitching again and he notices, smirking and pulling her close to him again.
"I like that noise... Wouldn't mind hearing it in different circumstances" he says, as she laughs in an attempt to ease the tension.
"Jesus Christ" she murmurs "you're giving me whiplash".
"Sorry... I'm coming on too strong aren't I?" He says, stepping back again, this time she lets him. Not because she wanted him away from her (in fact she wanted exactly the opposite) but she allows it because she thinks it's best, she knew they'd get ahead of themselves if she allowed it to continue.
"You're not, don't apologise" she says, making him smile.
"Okay..." The tension seems to be lifted somewhat and she can breathe almost normally again. Her heart is still beating rapidly in her chest, almost soaring when she spots the dimples either side of his lips and the way his eyes are creasing as he smiles.
"I want to get to know you more... Seeing as we're going to be working together" he says and she smirks, sure that was the reason, she thinks.
"Id like that" he nods, stepping forward just slightly. He feels the need, the desire to just hug her but refrains from doing so, wondering what's coming over him. He was never like this usually.
"We should go inside... I'm freezing my tits off" he says making her laugh loudly. Oh god that laugh he thinks, he thinks it's the best noise he's ever heard and knew he'd do anything to hear it again.
"You didn't have to give me your jacket" she gazes up at him, one eyebrow raising, her eyes almost twinkle when she sees him smirk, accompanied with a slow shake of his head. His hand slowly reaches forward, just one hand, reaching for the edge of his jacket, smoothing the fabric between his fingers. She feels his knuckle graze her abdomen briefly before he pulls back.
"Don't be silly, I wanted to... Couldn't have you shivering out here whilst I'm all toasty" he explains, she stops her breath from hitching, sighing instead, trying to pull it off as a content one instead of a surprised one.
"And now it's the other way round" she says, raising her eyebrows as her arms cross over her chest, the fabric creasing under her hands, his scent escaping from the clothing, harassing her senses, making her skin rise in goosebumps again.
"oh shush' he says making her laugh. He places a hand at her back, leading her back inside. They make their way back over to their table, her still in his jacket and his hand still resting against her back, coming to rest against the back of her seat as they sit back down.
Her eyes find Matty's as she shrugs off Ross' coat, the curly haired man frowning at her.
"What's up?' she mouths, worried something was up with him. She couldn't quite explain it but she felt some sort of duty towards Matty already, knowing he was so similar to her and that alone had her wanting to protect him. She wasn't sure whether she liked how deeply she cared for him already, she felt like she knew him so well already and was a scared of getting hurt. Whilst on the other hand, the man who's jacket she was just wearing, she didn't know that well at all, seeing as in the years she had been following the band, he was more reserved than Matty.
"Later" he mouths back, making her frown. She picks up her phone that she left again the table, ignoring the texts from her bandmates and pulling him Mattys contact in her phone.
Ross draws his eyes away from the scene, not wanting to intrude but feels a pang of jealousy hit him. He sees the name light up her phone "Bestie ❤️" and somehow he knows its Matty.
"You'd tell me if something was up right?" She sends the message, hearing the ding of his phone before he's drawing it from his pocket, eyes flicking from the device to her as he reads it.
"Yeah love... Don't worry I'm fine x" she receives back in reply, placing her phone down and smiling at him, he smiles back. She makes a funny face at him for safe measure, just in case he was in fact lying, she hoped it would cheer up a little bit.
He chuckles and the sight makes her smile wide again, turning her attention back to Ross for a second, who smiles at her too.
"So y/n..." She looks to see who was talking to her, finding Adam smiling at her.
"How long have you and your band been together... What's the name again?" He asks and she smiles.
"The Love Of Thieves" she confirms, making him raise his eyebrows, muttering a "cool name".
"We've been together for almost 10 years now... Started when I was 15, the rest were around 18 then" she says.
"They're older than you?" Matty asks, her eyes flicking to him and she smiles, nodding at him.
"Yeah... Everyone thought it was really weird... Me hanging out with people who were older than me. But my brother played bass with our drummer's brother, and we all used to hang out... They didn't realise I was as young as I was until about 6 months in" she explains and everyone laughs. Ross can't help but like the fact her brother played bass, knowing it was a conversation they could have another time.
"Such a cool kid weren't you?' Matty jokes making her raise her middle finger at him.
"Shut up... I didn't get along with people my age to be honest. Besides I grew up around older people, so I just fit in with them" she explains and people around the table nod, seeming to understand.
"Where did the name come from?" George asks, sipping from his glass as his other hand held Charli's.
"We actually kind of stole it..." She says, making everyone laugh.
"My dad always used to play records around the house and I remember coming downstairs one day and this song was playing... Wasn't really my vibe like musically but there was this one lyric" she says, smiling as she looked at her fingers.
"Oh the tears that you weep, For the poor tortured souls, Who fall at your feet... I fucking loved that... So I asked my dad what the song was"
A chorus of "The Love Thieves" breaks out and she nods.
"We added a word obviously..." She laughs again "it was originally just a place holder but it kind of just..."
"Stuck' Matty finishes and she nods again.
"I think that's fucking sick" he then says and she smiles.
"Thanks..." She blushes as Matty smiles.
"Cool name for a cool band" Ross says and she smiles over at him.
Eventually people start filtering out, Adam leaves first, wanting to get home go his wife and child, which Y/n finds very sweet. Charli and George are then leaving next, Charli pulling her up from the table to hug her tightly.
"We'll have to go out soon, just the two of us" y/n confirms with a nod and Charli then kisses her cheek and bids her farewell.
Mumbling a "keep being a legend and if these lot get on your nerves, let me know"
Matty, Ross and Y/n stay until close, eventually being ushered out by one of the bar tenders.
She begins to shiver as soon as she steps outside, and it's a matter of which one shrugs their jacket off first, the winner being Matty, who drapes his coat over her shoulders. She says a thank you but her eyes find Ross' who looks down sadly at her.
"Sorry for being that idiot who didn't bring a jacket" she says making them both laugh.
"It's fine, I've got my cig to warm me up" Matty says and she nods.
"Want me to call you a cab?" Ross then speaks up, she smiles but ultimately shakes her head at him.
"No I'm good thank you, Abbie works around the corner and has just finished her shift so she's going to swing by and pick me up" she explains making the both of them nod.
"Abbie is your guitarist right?" Ross asks and she nods.
"The one and only... She likes to think she's Hann but she's really not" her words making the boys chuckle.
"She's a fan too?' Matty asks, cringing when he realises he just called her a 'fan'. But y/n doesn't mind, because she was one, and a huge one at that. She had their logo tattooed for Christ sake.
"She is" she confirms. They hear the beep of a car and y/n flicks her eyes towards it, seeing Abbie with her head out of her window, waving at them.
"Well that's me" she says, going to shrug off Mattys jacket but he stops her.
"Keep it" he says, pulling her towards him to hug her tightly.
"Lovely to see you again... I really look forward to working with you y/n' he says into her ear as they hug.
"You too Matty... Better text me" she says and he mumbles an 'of course, not getting rid of me now" they then pull away and she steps forward, closer to Ross.
"MacDonald" she says and he smirks down at her, hooking his arms around her waist and pulling her the rest of the way towards him.
"Y/L/N" he says back, sighing into her hair as they hug. It was the first hug they shared and he was already addicted. To the way she felt against him, in his arms, smaller than him, warm against him. The way he could feel her heart beat against his chest and the way she felt her warmth seep into him. The way he could smell her, more strongly now.
"Tonight was fun" he says and she nods against him. The pair realise they've been hugging for a little too long so reluctantly pull away.
"I'll text you" he says and she smiles, really hopeful that he does.
She pulls away and her eyes flick between the pair, heart beating and breath picking up. She then leaves them, walking to the guitarists car, opening the door and getting in.
She was fucked.
"Good night?" She asks as she begins driving.
"Amazing." She confirms.
"Who's jacket is that?'
"Mattys'
"Oh. Anything going on there?"
"No don't be silly"
Her phone buzzes as she looks at it, seeing one notification from an unknown number.
"Let me know when you're home please xx - Ross"
She quickly saved his number in her phone as "MacDonald" tempting to put a little heart next to his name but not wanting to get ahead of herself, when she recieves another message.
"Looked better in my jacket btw... Fancy grabbing a coffee sometime? Xx" it reads and it makes her gasp quietly again.
She thinks twice about sending what she wants to, deciding to just go for it and replying back with a "Yours was comfier... Smelt like you too 🤭... And would love to x"
Her phone pings far too quickly for it to be Ross so she looks again and sees another message, this firm from Matty, who had edited his contact name from the simple "Matty" to "Bestie ❤️" when they went for coffee with one another.
"I'm now realising the huge mistake I made when I gave you my jacket... You've got my house keys" it reads and she gasps.
"Fuck" she says, burring her hand into the pocket of his jacket, feeling the metal against her hands and pulling it out.
"What?" Abbie says.
"I've got Matty's keys" she says.
"Shit" Abbie says.
"Yeah. Shit"
"Text me your address please x" she sends, worrying when he doesn't reply "Matthew!" She then sends.
"I'm not letting you drive all the way here just to drop my keys off xx" - Matty.
"Well I'm not letting you roam the streets in the freezing cold Matthew. Send me your address xx" - Y/n.
He replies back almost immediately with his address.
"Do you mind dropping me off near by? I can get an Uber back if you need to be somewhere" she explains and Abbie nods.
"You sure? I can wait about a bit"
"No honestly it's fine"
They drive almost in silence to his house, pulling up close by.
"Don't do anything I wouldn't do" she says making y/n shake her head.
"It's not like that.. I'm just going to give him his keys and then head home...besides you're literally gay"
"exactly"
Y/n walks the last bit towards his house, seeing him sitting on the curb.
"Oh thank fuck, I'm about to freeze to death here"
"Nice to see you too' she jokes.
"I'm so thankful you're here darling. Seriously, I could've crashed at someone's house" he says and she shakes her head, smiling when he pulls her into a tight hug.
"Wanna come up for a bit? I make a mean brew" he offers and despite knowing she should really say no, she's nodding.
"Sounds heavenly" and then she's handing him his keys and they're entering his house.
She's entering Matty Healy's house. Her phone buzzes in her (Mattys pocket) and if she had looked she would've seen a text from Ross that read "Home yet love? You've got me worried here xxx"
(4) No Need To Explain

Sisters of the Solstice. Sweden, 1975. Rumors swirled for centuries about a secretive community of women who harnessed the power of the Solstice for dark magic that granted them eternal life. Hushed whispers called them a coven of witches and warned of ritual sacrifice, cannibalism, walking dead, communications with the devil, and a bloodlust towards any man who would dare enter their territory… but was any of it true? By the 20th century, the Sisters had long been relegated to a dusty old myth, until photographer Sera Clairmont published these photos in her Spectagoria magazine.
Clairmont gave sparse details about her time with the Sisters of the Solstice, saying she was only given access to their rituals under a vow of secrecy. “These women have only ever asked for privacy,” she wrote, “and because they protect that fiercely, they are called evil. Are they practitioners of magick? Certainly. They give themselves to the earth, and the earth returns them to life. One cannot make such exchanges without sacrifice, but that is their way. Many generations ago, these women turned to the dark arts for protection when the world of men would offer them none. Men hurt them, so they adapted to survive. That the Sisters found the devil a safer bedfellow says more about men than it does about the Sisters. And as the soil grows their bodies anew, Midsommar after Midsommar, don’t be surprised if Mother Earth is taking notes. After all, who has a world of men hurt more than she?”

Hi, lovely Crepesuzette! Thanks a lot of your inspiring blog, your fics and always helpfull #fic recs! And can I ask any recs for good fics where John in the end understend the shit he did for Paul? All of this HDYS, Melody Maker, Rolling Stone etc, which not only hurted Paul but they ruined his self-esteem and creative reputation, you know. Thanks again! Love you and want you be happy everyday like you do it for me :)
Hello there, thank you for the ask—and for your kind words. Very welcome, esp. since real life has been low grade shit these past few days.
So...your ask make me think of stories where things are not only better than they were in this (clears throat) reality as we know it: there's also a focus on mutual understanding, peace-making, forgiveness. Yes?
These came to my mind...and making this list made me realize I'm really in the mood to re-read some of them! In the 70's:
stuck inside these four walls (@monkberries). Lost Weekend. John and Paul get locked up until they resolve their shit.
i can only speak my mind (@revollver). 70's. Paul reads John's 'secret' diaries that have been leaked to the press, and understands him—and himself—better.
forth and back (@monkberries). 70's—80's. Paul and John talk through songs.
A Toot and a Snore (@glowing-gold). Lost Weekend in LA. That jam session is on the page in real time, as is their slow and hot reconciliation. Will never forget the description of moustache-Paul and his nipples, *fans self*
They Say it's Your Birthday (@ohjohnnysblog). 1979. A personal favorite. Warm, nostalgic phone sex in the spirit of peace and friendship.
Down on the Farm (RosalindBeatrice), 1974. John is exposed to Wings, Paul's family, and Paul's hotness, and realizes it's all meant to lure him back...
You Will, You Will, You Will (@eveepe). John and Paul and Linda take the plunge. Excellent tension...over the phone and in person.
February in New Orleans (@eveepe). 1975. John and May visit Paul and Linda in New Orleans. Resentment is desire's favorite costume. Everyone has a good time, 2/4 have a hard-on (I am sorry).
Adventures in Total Honesty (@merseydreams). 1975. Paul and John meet backstage, and have it out. A+ banter, and so many things I wish Paul had said. Also: sex.
The lights go down (they're back in town) (@backbenttulips). 1977. Paul and John are trapped in an elevator at the Dakota. The power goes out. John comes back to live.
Something Borrowed Something New (@inspiteallthedanger). 1979. The former Beatles meet at Pattie & Eric's wedding. Paul and John face some truths.
six hours in august (@stonedlennon). 1979. A chance meeting in NYC. The love is still there.
I Still Miss Someone/ I Know That I Miss you, but I Don't Know Where I Stand/ Close the Door Lightly When You Go (RosalindBeatrice). 1976-1979. Paul and John become lovers, but their lives have changed. John feels guilty about the past, Paul has a family...Mutual empathy is needed, and accordingly grows. But it doesn't come easy.
1980 and Onwards:
The Birthday Party (@merseydreams). John and Paul meet at Ringo's Birthday Party. Paul has had therapy, and John wears denim shorts. There is only one bed.
Free Man in Paris (@backbenttulips). John and Paul get married in Paris in '61, and get a divorce seven years later. But it's not the end.
Memory Lane (@ohjohnnysblog). Old, married John and Paul leaf through a photo album and reminisce about the past, including past lovers.
and when broken bodies are washed ashore (who am i to ask for more) (wardo_wedidit): John and Paul. Now and Then.
Bermuda (@scurator): John and Paul are grown-ups and know what they want (each other, to start with).
Take A Sad Song and Make it Better (@javelinbk). 1980. John visits Paul in 1980, and they revisit the past, including their love. But their families don't magically disappear. Also by @javelinbk: Our Version of Events (Part 1, Part 2 (in progress)). 1971. Reading fan fiction helps John and Paul realize what's happening, and what's been happening in the past.
Going Nowhere (@inspiteallthedanger). 1980; John survives the shooting and returns to England. I think of this one as 'they talk about it' fic.
Comprehensive Fix-Its:
The Contract (JP). The story of John and Paul, with a happier (though bizarre) ending, and a lot of sex (good).
i was a younger man then (now) (post hoc) (@fingersfallingupwards). The story of John and Paul à la The Time Traveller's Wife. It takes them a long time—but in the end they do understand and forgive each other.

2) You Can't Have Him
The day had come and gone, and Geneveve and I lied in bed together in the blackened night discussing the day. We'd done this since we were children, laying beside one another and looking right into one another's faces as we snickered and laughed about every detail of everything.
"I saw Matty helping you today," Genevieve whispered, her big bright brown eyes widening.
I blushed, bringing the blankets over my head shyly.
Genevieve laughed and got under the blankets with me, "you'll never hide from me, what the fuck was that do you think? Do you think he likes you? Or do you think the sight of cake on your-"
"Gen!" I cut in.
She laughed again, forcing a laugh out of me too. She reached over and pushed the curls that draped my face away, tucking each lock behind my ear one by one. Our laughter settled, there was a calm in the air that felt... safe.
"I think a little bit of both," I whispered.
Genevieve smiled, leaning in and pressing a gentle smooch to my lips. I smiled against the softness of her lips before pulling back. We both threw the blankets from over our heads at once. There was a silence between us, and it was nerve racked.
"What was that?" I asked after a moment.
"I just know that if Matty likes you, you obvously like him, and I wanted to be your first kiss. Not him. Because I really love you, and will forever." Genevieve said, attempting to hold a straight face.
"...you bitch." I shook my head, reaching out to hit her playfully.
She dodged my hand, laughing and sticking her tongue out at me.
"You took Matty's kiss, what if he would have been my first..." I sighed, day dreaming this fantasy.
Genevieve's smile faded slowly, lying back on her side. Maybe she was tired of hearing about him... Before I could ask there was a knock on the door, we both looked at each other.
"What if it's Matty?" Genevieve whispered.
"Why would it be? It's probably Alex, hopefully his girlfriend needs a Pamprin." I laughed, so did Genevieve.
I swung the door open, seeing none other than Matty standing on the other side in a pair of red plaid pajama pants and a black t-shirt. His hair hung so far over his face I could barely see it.
"Hey d'you have a pillow?" He asked.
My heart pounded as I nodded quickly, "yeah I have a pillow." I went and grabbed one off the bed and handed it to him, "you're going to bed?"
He shrugged, "I'm gonna go for a walk so I can smoke and then go to bed, Alex is already in his room... loverboy."
We both laughed a little, "well, you can smoke on the deck, my mom won't smell it her bedroom is way on the other side of the house."
"Yeah?" He asked.
"Yeah... can I come with you?" I asked.
"Sure." He nodded.
"I'm gonna grab a sweater, I'll meet you there."
"Alright," his eyes focused on my nose the entire time he spoke to me, I couldn't help but wonder why he acted so strange after today.
"Gen, I'm gonna-"
"Go to the deck with Matty, yeah I heard." She snapped.
My jaw dropped slightly, I looked at her in confusion.
"You can come if you want, I just thought that after what we talked about you'd be cool with me going to figure out which one it was... like you know... if he likes me or not." I explained, fiddling with my thumbs.
"It's fine, just go." Genevieve forced a very painful looking smile.
I was so tired of her acting like such a baby all the time. I rolled my eyes and walked out of the room, realizing I had forgotten my sweater. I couldn't go back and look stupid, I continued on my way down the darkened hall. As I tuned th corner I could see Matty sitting on the deck and smoking. As I opened the french doors I could smell it wasn't a cigarette.
"Hey," I spoke quietly as the rest of the house was just as.
Matty turned around, smoke escaping his lips, "hey," he said.
I sat down next to him, the skunky smoke filling up the air and going up my nose. He passed it over to me, I hesitated. I had never smoked before, but clearly I had to, if I asked to come. I held the joint to my lips, looking over at Matty through the corner of my eyes. He wasn't paying any mind to me, I then knew there was nothing to worry about... but why was he not paying any mind to me? Was this the mysterious persona he wanted to portray to keep me wanting more? Because I did... or was he really just unreadable?
I noticed the flame at the tip of the joint dimming as I sat wrapped in thought. I quickly held it to my lips and took a puff, choking immediately. Matty turned to me quickly, taking the joint from my hands as he noticed me struggle.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
I patted my chest, nodding quickly, "I'm fine, I'm fine. I just ... I don't actually smoke." I confessed.
"What? Then what are you doing?!" He asked.
I shrugged, embarrassed, "let me try again."
Matty held the joint to my lips, "just inhale very softly, hold it in a moment, then exhale." He instructed.
I took the joint betwwen my lips and did exactly as he said, the doors behind us swung open, and there ws Alex, alone with a joint in hand, too.
I jumped a little at the sight of him, not knowing how he'd react.
"What the hell?" He looked from me to Matty, then Matty to me.
I stood up quickly, nearly stumbling from feeling the high more intensely than when I was seated.
"Elvira are you high?" He asked.
Matty sat back, ashing the joint.
I laughed a little, "yes just like the two of you always are."
"It's late. Matty d'you get my little sister high? What the fuck are you even doing out here alone with my little sister? I bring you to my family and-"
"Nothing happened, she's a big girl, mate. She wanted a smoke, I shared, she's high, and everybody's going to go to bed highly ever after tonight." Matty stood up.
Alex walked up to Matty, staring him in the eye. Matty stared back, "you need to relax."
"No you need to relax this is my little sister, she's too beautiful to be smoking pot and hanging around ... just... just get out." Alex said.
"Hanging around me?" Matty asked.
"That's not what I said, you just need to leave."
"Alex, it's three in the morning where is he going to--"
"I'll get a room." Matty pushed past Alex, going back into the house.
Alex glared at me, I looked back, my heart aching for what I had just caused.
"Stay away from him, Elvira." He demanded.
"Alex can you just go away?! You're not my dad, okay?! You're not anyone! you're my drug addicted brother who just judged another man as if he had any room to at all." I pushed past him also, hurrying into the house and looking for Matty.

Yuri of Absence and The Chair of Yuri: Combining Lesbian Manga and Science Fiction - The Secret Garden
This article was originally written in 2021 as part of The Secret Garden, YuriMother's exclusive series of articles, available only for Patrons. If you want to access other articles and help support Yuri and LGBTQ+ content, subscribe to the YuriMother Patreon.
Tumblr media
In the “olden days” of Yuri, which is really to say anything in the ‘00s or earlier, there was not much variety in the mainstream Yuri market. If you wanted to read a manga about the romance between two women or watch an anime with clear lesbian elements, choices were between a sweet school story or a classic tragic school Yuri story. As I have mentioned many times recently, one of the most significant advancements in the recent Yuri genre is the advent of sub-genres. Once considered an element or subgenre itself, Yuri hosts various works from isekai to feminist literature. However, one of the most curious and certainly most well-known subgenres is science fiction.
Yuri science fiction is in the spotlight right now, with everything from visual novels like Synergia to webcomics like Ratana Satis’s Soul Drifters. However, one of the most prolific and rightly celebrated titles is Iori Miyazawa’s Otherside Picnic. The series began publishing under Hayakawa’s Bunko JA imprint in 2017, and over the past few years, it exploded onto the scene.  It has an upcoming sixth book, a manga adaptation serialized in Monthly Shounen Gangan, healthy overseas publishing, and of course, an anime adaptation helmed by Kase-san and Stiens;Gate director Takuya Sato. It has garnered praise from critics CBR, Anime News Network, and Erica Friedman of Okazu. I wrote glowing reviews for the first few books, complimenting its worldbuilding, pacing, and characters. However, Otherside Picnic did not spring out of anywhere. Indeed, it is the product of gradual shifts in Yuri and sci-fi storytelling and Miyazawa’s genius theories and knowledge of the genres.
Tumblr media
The mixture of Yuri and science fiction is not anything new; it predates most other forms of Yuri save Class S school romances. You may not picture many of these when you think of modern Yuri sci-fi, but as early as 1975, we had Yuri stories like Boku no Shotaiken that included small sci-fi elements, in this case, transferring the mind to another body. Over the next two decades or so, a time during which so few Yuri titles surfaced, it is occasionally referred to as Yuri’s “era of Darkness,” multiple titles sci-fi titles including Dirty Pair, Project A-Ko, Bubblegum Crisis, and Iczer featured science fiction settings and Yuri elements. At this time, Yuri was not much of a genre as we think of it today, but more of a factor inserted into a larger narrative. Think of Yayoi and Shion from Psycho-Pass for a more contemporary example. In fact, except for Iczer, none of these titles feature any outright lesbian characters, just female casts with “Yuri-ish” moments of women standing close together and being companions.
Tumblr media
These titles feature two key elements that many current series have shifted further away from, soft sci-fi and Weak Yuri. Soft, as opposed to hard science fiction, is the more established of these two scales. Science fiction can be separated between outlandish and impossible ideas, sometimes known as science fantasy, and those based in reality, research, and the hard sciences such as physics, astronomy, and mathematics. Sorting works between these two labels is, ironically, not an exact science, and fans and critics alike argue about their precise definitions. However, let us consider soft and hard science as a spectrum, with outlandish premises like Dragonball on the soft end and the reality-based concepts of Space Brothers at the other. One can sort most titles along this continuum. M Alan Kazlev does an excellent job dissecting this scale in further detail. Many of the titles we enjoy today, including Otherside Picnic, inhabit this transitory space, as it is not fantasy. Still, its reliance on anthropology and psychology’s soft sciences may put it a small step below more grounded hard sci-fi. Still, it is far above the aliens and superpowered robots in ‘80s anime, so we shall consider it hard sci-fi for the sake of this argument.
*Note: Many science fiction circles use the abbreviation sci-fi for soft science fiction and SF for hard science fiction. For ease of readability and common vernacular, this article uses “sci-fi” for both instances.*
Sci-fi Yuri did not break out of soft science fiction territory until very recently. In the 1990s, Yuri underwent dramatic changes thanks to Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena, which helped reform it as a genre rather than a feature. Maria Watches Over Us revived S Yuri traditions, and new titles were set in schools and focused on modern girls’ lives. In the 2000s, Yuri magazines began serialization and featured stories such as Kisses, Sighs, and Cheery Blossom Pink and Strawberry Shake Sweet (both serialized under different names). Despite being primarily aimed at adult women, the magazine found success with male audiences, prompting new stories appealing to men and boys. These works reintroduced action and science fiction into the genre with pieces like Kannazuki no Miko: Destiny of the Shrine Maiden, Blue Drop, and Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl (Yuriboke does a better job breaking all these down). However, all these were still vehemently in soft sci-fi territory, with Kashimashi’s only surreal element being an alien because the author was, to simplify grossly, unable to fathom the existence of transgender people (coming full circle from Boku no Shotaiken). Possibly the only contemporary mainstream hard sci-fi title to include Yuri and enjoy a modicum of success was Qualia The Purple. However, this series did not have the genre-defining power that later works would.
Tumblr media
However, what changes between these series and those mentioned earlier is the Yuri itself. The relationships become much more explicit and central to the plot. You can deliberate whether or not Bubblegum Crisis is sapphic, but just try sitting someone down and arguing that Kannazuki no Miko is not built around the crux of two women holding romantic interest in each other. Yuri science fiction author Gengen Kusano proposes a dichotomy similar to soft and hard sci-fi to analyze these titles, Weak and Strong Yuri. He explains it in his own brilliantly convoluted and philosophical way, but in short, Weak Yuri relies on using logic and the mind to make the real imaginary, while strong Yuri is about emotionalism and realism, making fiction into reality.
Strong Yuri is Yuri that focuses on realism through feelings and emotions. Kusano describes it as fiction characters having real emotions. They have strong connections and affection for each other that are real and powerful. The audience experiences the feelings between the characters as they are felt and portrayed. Think of how emotional the exclamations and love, sorrow, confusion, and affection are in titles like Bloom Into You and Citrus. In a sense, they can be so strong that they transcend their fictional confines and become real, as they are experienced by considers, a stage called “radically Strong Yuri.” Most explicit Yuri, which is not subtext or suggestive content but in-your-face lesbianism, is Strong Yuri, although not all Strong Yuri is outright depictions of lesbianism; it is a square rectangle situation, not all rectangles are squares, but all squares are rectangles.
Tumblr media
Weak Yuri is cemented in the areas of thought, logic, and epistemology. It deals with the theory of mind, the ability to attribute mental states to others or ourselves. For example, when we see someone smiling or laughing, we may not feel their emotion ourselves, as we do not have direct access to their mind, but we recognize that they are happy. In Weak Yuri, one uses their theory of mind to observe facts and deduce the existence of a Yuri relationship, even if one is not present. So-called “Yuri-ish” titles like Yuru Camp or K-ON! do not outright state or depict romantic or sexual attractions, but is attributed by the viewers onto characters.  Said observer witnesses the interactions between girls and, using that factual and observable data, puzzles out a lesbian attraction they prescribe to the subjects, whether real. Shipping culture relies on Weak Yuri’s logic Kusano’s most extreme, “Radical Weak Yuri,” the relationships of real people, like idols, become imaginary through these projections.
Tumblr media
Blue Drop and Kashimashi may have been soft Sci-fi, but unlike the soft sci-fi, Weak Yuri series of the twentieth century, they featured Strong Yuri and placed it more as a central aspect of the work with other elements built around, rather than as a side element. The next revolution in sci-fi Yuri came when hard sci-fi titles began production. A few of the principal players here are Kusano himself, Otherside Picnic Creator Iori Miyazawa, and editor Rikimura Mizoguichi, all of whom feature in the viral Yuri Made Me Human interview of Miyazawa. Most of the theories and ideas discussed in this article, including Kusano’s Weak and Strong Yuri arguments, came from these seminars.
Tumblr media
It all started with Kusano’s existential widescreen Yuri baroque proletariat hard sci-fi Love Live AU fanfic of the popular ship NicoMaki, consisting of Nico Yazawa and Maki Nishikino. The revised edition of this story, Last and First Idol, was published in 2016 and became the first debut title to win the prestigious Seiun Award in 42 years. Satoshi Maejima’s post-script essay at the end of the Last and First Idol collection gives far more detail into these works’ history. However, Idol was the first prominent story to feature Yuri in a hard sci-fi narrative. It was not perfect. In fact, in its push to feature gruesome content and insane hard sci-fi that Yuri is pushed to the wayside during most of the story.
Tumblr media
*Author’s note: The first time I read Last and First Idol, I was completely unaware of its contents, which was a shocking experience; the story comes with a severe content warning).
Last and First Idol did not create a woven hard sci-fi, Strong Yuri narrative. However, it was a definite proof of the concept, a testament that the sprawling details and imagery of hard Sci-Fi could work with Yuri relationships. Kusano’s next short story, Evolution Girls, which would appear alongside Last and First Idol in the collection of the same name, saw the author focus more on emotionalism and create a Strong Yuri work. Nevertheless, Last and First Idol was a massive success. Future hard proof that Yuri hard sci-fi was coming in force came in December 2018, when Hayakawa Shobo ran a special edition of its long-running S-F Magazine featuring Yuri stories. The issue, planned by Rikimura Mizoguchi, proved so popular for the second time in its then 59-year history, the magazine had to reprint before release.
Tumblr media
While Kusano was developing theories on Yuri and Hayakawa Shobo worked to push the public eye onto Yuri sci-fi, author Iori Miyazawa was refining his own Yuri premises, ones that, though he did not know it at the time, would not only see Strong Yuri and Hard sci-fi standing side by side in the same story but would synthesis the two into a unique product that could attract new fans and expand the borders of science fiction and Yuri. The work in question, of course, is Otherside Picnic. This light novel series about girls journeying to another world to hunt creatures from occult internet lore is to date Yuri science fiction’s best execution.
Tumblr media
As Miyazawa admits, he strives to create Strong Yuri by focusing on emotionalism and realistic characters. However, such character-driven narratives are often at odds with hard science fiction, which requires dense walls of text to explain the complicated science behind its concepts and world. Miyazawa avoids this trap by utilizing Yuri tropes, specifically scenic Yuri and “Yuri of absence,” and integrating Yuri relationship into these explanatory literary lectures. Examining the latter first, rather than using narrative or exposition dialogue to unravel the intelligence behind the world or elements of science fiction, Miyazawa uses the relationship between Sorawo and Toriko.
In Otherside Picnic, explanations of the mysterious Otherside come primarily from two sources, dialogue and Sorawo’s inner monologue. When Sorawo and Torikko discuss a nuance of the paranormal creatures they investigate, it no longer becomes a large infodump but a Yuri scene about their relationship through their interactions and responses. According to both the strong Yuri theory and Yuri’s traditional definition, these emotions and discussions are the crux of the genre – stories about females’ relationships. Similar emotionalism fills Sorawo’s inner monologues, specifically in the frequent romantic admirations of Toriko. Thus, an explanation existing in that same space becomes Yuri, as it mirrors the same emotions and attraction. Merely by placing the usual exposition into interactions and relationships, Miyazawa was able to open hard science fiction to new readers, who may have been apprehensive before because of these text walls.
Tumblr media
Miyazawa’s other secret weapon is, as he describes it, “Yuri of absence.” Relying on the principles of Strong Yuri, that Yuri is fiction made real through emotions, Yuri of absence extends these parameters outside of characters. As Strong Yuri relies on feeling, not observable data like characters, anything that invokes two women’s feelings together is Yuri. It could be a song, or an empty bench, as one can imagine two women on it and feel emotions tied to that. Of course, taken to its extreme, nearly anything can then be Yuri, as I have joked before, gesturing to an empty chair proclaiming, “Behold, a Yuri!” However, Miyazawa uses this Yuri of absence sparingly, rendering it closer to scenic Yuri’s intimacy.
Scenic Yuri, a particular type of Yuri of absence, focuses exclusively on setting and imagery, a feature that works particularly well in science fiction as according to Masahiro Noda’s “sci-fi is all about images.” Traditional Yuri uses character interaction and supplements it with images and sights that help communicate characters’ emotions and intimacy, like fleeting shots or descriptions of the sky. Take the shot from Kase-san and Morning Girls where Yamada stands by the bus stop. The distance between the girls, the tree in the foreground on Yamada’s side, and the pole on the right all invoke emotion and help tell the girls’ story, distanced by their differences and upcoming life paths. Now remove the girls, the scene remains, as does its meaning and emotions, whether the characters are present or not.
Tumblr media
Scenic Yuri is employed vigorously in more male-targeted S Yuri (a minority of the Class S genre). Here, the imagery provides intimacy so that the voyeuristic viewer could look into the characters’ private and forbidden lives, specifically the girls in all-girls schools. Take the shot from Strawberry “Mo Man May Enter Here” Panic. The sweeping view of the Strawberry Dorms atop Astraea Hill, a place where men are forbidden, gives the consumer an exclusive inside look at the private home of its subjects. Otherside Picnic uses these same scenic Yuri principles in its descriptions. In this case, the intimacy does not come from a place where men are prohibited or a shot describing women’s relationships. Instead, the reports of abandoned ruins and deserted open fields where only Toriko and Sorawo exist provide extreme intimacy. It is an emotional view of two of the few women in this world with nothing but each other; thus, Yuri.
Tumblr media
Yuri science fiction is easily the most exciting place in the genre right now. Its creators are experimenting with new theories and storytelling methods to expand the boundaries of what science fiction or Yuri alone could never do. The subgenre has undoubtedly come a long way from its Weak Yuri roots and continues to grow. Industry leaders like Miyazawa and Mizoguichi will continue to push into this excited and uncharted territory, using tactics new and old to bring together Yuri’s emotional and romantic core with science fiction’s epic and provoking imagery. I have few doubts that we have seen all these pioneers have to offer and that Last and First Idol and Otherside Picnic are just the beginning.

Hey, I have a question and I was wondering if you could help because it’s really been confusing me lately. If not, for any reason at all, you’d rather not I totally understand. You can just delete the ask.
With a lot of pro-ship arguments I see the phrase it’s “just fiction” and idea that fiction can’t harm anyone. However propaganda is still obviously dangerous and representation is important. I don’t know how exactly the rules are different for these things and I’d really appreciate any thoughts you had on the topic, if you have any. I might be missing some obvious part to this, my brain tends to do that
So it's not that the rules are different, it's that the entire context is different, including the intent, impact and scope.
I used to deal with this mental conflict as well, as a young person. I was raised republican, and one of their big tactics is oversimplifying things. So you learn "violence is bad", and then you see BLM protestors and the January 6th rioters, and the simplified world view says "if you think the BLM thugs are justified, then so were the January 6th patriots - they both rioted, they both fought for their rights against the establishment".
Now obviously, those two situations are absolutely not equivalent when you think about them for longer than a millisecond, but the simplified world view does not want you to think. In the simplified mindset, "destroying property" is always wrong, no matter the reason why. So if you are OK with it in one situation, you cannot disagree in another and vice versa. And that is the mindset Antis have when it comes to fanfic: if propaganda is bad and can negatively influence people, if giant blockbuster movies, famous novels, and popular TV shows can negatively influence stereotypes about people and cause other harm, then it is equally wrong to write about icky kinks on Ao3.
The thing is though, these are not at all equivalent situations. Propaganda is created with the explicit intent to influence people's opinions about a subject area. The scope and impact of famous authors and directors is way, way bigger than a fan author on Ao3 - and big-name folks like that do actually have to deal with the impact of their work. Spielberg regrets the negative impact Jaws had on sharks, for instance.
A fanfic you write for yourself and post on Ao3 for a niche audience of fans is going to get a couple thousand hits, at best. It's very unlikely to ever escape the awareness of people in your fandom. And especially if you have tagged it correctly, the only people who are going to read it in the first place are people who are already into that kink, or who are open to it. It is never going to influence culture at large. My kinky fanfic is not going to have the same cultural impact as Steven Spielberg's Jaws did in 1975. And no, my fanfic is not going to "normalize rape culture".
Any work of fiction can have unintended impacts. This is not a logical justification to not create art. "Problematic art" not only deserves to exist, it needs to exist. If you don't agree with that, then you might as well be on the side of the folks in red states across this nation who are banning books in schools, forcibly rewriting history to erase slavery from the USA's past, and thinking they can get rid of "problematic media" they claim is "grooming their children".

any fic recs? like fics you just cant live without other people reading?
okay i might not be the best person to ask this because i'm writing two long series at this moment and i barely have time to properly read fics like i used to but i can defo give you a little list of recommendations!
when you say fics i can't live without other people reading, Nothing Revealed In A Common Crisis by my wonderful and incredibly talented best friend @imagine-that-100 is the first to come to my mind! An absolute masterpiece of a fic, alex turner x reader x matty healy love triangle that's just so well written and thought out that it makes me scream. I'm entirely obsessed with it and it truly is my roman empire LOL! (it also introduced me to the 1975 so we love it!)
make sure to check out the rest of N's work fr, all of her series are amazing and if you want one shots, Will We Talk is insanely good and I'm eager for her to post part 3 and All Is On My Side is everything to me as well!
of course, i have to add Aphasia by another one of my besties @red---moon 'cause that fic is just so damn good. I will be forever obsessed with the way Red writes and her characterisation is just so raw and real, it's genuinely inspiring. also if you want some george x reader x matty brainrot, her one shot Indecision is surely gonna drive you mad.
another one of my incredible best friends, @kennedy-brooke put out her first fic Dress which has a part 1 and part 2 and it's so fucking good, I think every George girlie needs to read ASAP!!!!
if you wanna indulge in some fun and really well fucking written gatty content, i have to send you over to read everything @vinylandcoffeecollection has out! In particular, The Cellophane House and its sequel Lost Boys had me in shambles and I loved it so much!!! Another gatty legend is @drinkurkombucha and i would defo recommend all of her work! my favourites will forever be Talking To George and Stranger Than (Fan)Fiction!
i fell in love with a Ross fic i read the other day by @butyou-callmewhenyourebored and i think it deserves more attention. i fully was almost crying by the end of it, it was so sweet and well written!!!
now if you need filthy smut to read, i will definitely be sending you over to @lottiecrabie! she is the absolute queen of smut and everything she has written has left me jaw dropped and gasping for air lollllll!!! (such a shame she's leaving but she will never be forgotten)
also Three's A Party by @abiiors!!! jesus christ almighty, when i tell you i died reading this, i mean it. pure ross x reader x george brainrot.
another one that had me gagged was Satiate by @heavenhealy! that fic had me sweating and screeching like an idiot.
and for the last filthy one that comes to my mind it is @toomuchracket one shot inspired by politician!matty that truly ended my life in the best way when i read it the other day.
let me end this all in a wholesome cute note and put you on dad!matty because Playing On My Mind by @ughgoaway has me in a chokehold and the little extras they have been posting have me swooning and wanting to die for dilf matty!
it's fair to say that this fandom is filled with talent and i have too little time to properly indulge in all the great pieces everyone puts out so this list is way too short! but i hope you enjoy this messy but great list lol!!!! i really hope that by the time i'm done with the long series i'm currently writing, i can read much more and actually give a longer and more organised list. hope this helps anyway!!
