Let's Reflect On: Peter Pettigrew's erasure from The Marauders by a big portion of the Harry Potter fandom.
Peter Pettigrew was an 11-year-old boy who happened to be in the same compartment of the Hogwarts Express as James Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin. They all befriended each other through that interaction - through being sorted in the same house, being dormmates, having things in common, being comfortable around each other.
Peter Pettigrew was a twenty-something-year-old man who was threatened to sell his friends to Voldemort. He was a coward, not a follower.
Even Voldemort himself says it:
“[…] Wormtail here has paid some of his debt already, have you not, Wormtail?" He looked down at Wormtail, who continued to sob.  “You returned to me, not out of loyalty, but out of fear of your old friends. You deserve this pain, Wormtail. You know that, don’t you?”“
Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Chapter 33: The Death Eaters
In the end, at the moment of his death, when ordered to strangle Harry he hesitated. Now, we have seen him murder without batting an eyelash, why would he not do the same with Harry?
Here's my take on it:
I believe Wormtail saw Harry as more than a chore, a body to dispose of. He saw him as James' son. His best friend whom he helped killing son. All the guilt and grief he had been trying to justify and push away since that fateful night dawned on him.
Peter had been there for his beginning; for James and Lily’s beginning. He was there at their wedding, at the baby shower (if there was one), for every Christmas since first year... He felt, not sure love, but definitely guilt. He looked at Harry and saw the face of James and the never-quivering eyes that once belonged to Lily. It was much easier living without carrying the responsibility of having cast the spell that ended their lives.
He hesitated, which caused the silver hand Voldemort had given to him to sense that as a sign of weakness and/or disloyalty, leading him to be strangled to death. With such a choice, he saves Harry’s life and, to me, finds redemption for his treason.
I’m not saying you should love Peter or that he was a wonderful human being who should now be showered with flowers and kisses by any means, but he has a story and he has a past. He has a built-up of growing insecurities until he betrays his friends. All of this is essential to understand that the twenty-something-year-old Peter Pettigrew is not the same as Hogwarts student Peter Pettigrew. There’s background and nuance to each character - If we ignore it and pretend he was an idiot through and through it just turns him into an empty character with no real importance in the plot, which is not the case. Don't reduce the complex relationship of the marauders to that.
To expand on the topic, the extraordinary @theprogressofspring has quite an extensive section on their blog labeled In Defense of Peter Pettigrew, with essays that go much more into detail and actually gave me the courage to post this entire thing. In addition, they also began a while ago writing The Life Cycle of the Common Rat; a story from Peter's point of view, tackling the first Wizarding War and refreshing characterizations of young adult marauders and Lily; it was a really tricky time, and sometimes the people we love are cunts and the people we hate are not pure evil.

Marlene: NO IT’S NOT
Sirius: YES IT IS
James: YOU’RE BOTH WRONG
Remus: What now?
Peter: They’re arguing about which part of ABCD is the best
Remus: …What?
James: ABCD IS ICONIC AND THEREFORE THE BEST
Sirius: WXYZ IS THE OUTRO SO IT’S THE BEST
Marlene: LMNOP IS THE BEST PART OF THE SONG
Peter: See?
Remus: That’s a stupid thing to be arguing about
Remus:
Remus: And for the record, Sirius, LMNOP is the best-

Some non-ao3 Wolfstar Fic Recs for while ao3 is down
Hi so this is just a quick impromptu fic rec list, because ao3 has been down, so I thought a short rec list with fics that are hosted on other sites might come in handy while we all patiently wait for the amazing volunteers at ao3 to defend the site against the hackers. Also, I've seen several posts saying this and just want to add my voice, I think if you have the money to do so, giving a bit of it to ao3 would be a great thing to do, when the site is back up and running.
Okay enough of that, let's get into the list, in no particular order, these are just some of my older wolfstar faves off the top of my head, probably most of them are going to be fics I have recced on this blog before but I'm a firm believer that there is no such thing as too much enthusiasm, especially when it comes to fandom.
The Shoebox Project
If you ever thought about wanting to read the Shoebox Project but were intimidated by its length (or by all the separate pdf files), maybe now it is time to reconsider? It's an absolute wolfstar classic, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will give you all the marauders and wolfstar feels you could ever want! For me, when asked for just one wolfstar/marauders fic rec this is always the one I would give.
The Door through the World
Okay you didn't expect me to write a fic rec list of older wolfstar fics and not mention this one, did you? This is the 2nd fic I will always and forever rec, a magical realism AU (kind of), the story is pure magic. I found that it is still accessible via webarchive, even though it is hosted on ao3.
remuslives23 Masterlist
Here is remuslives23's masterlist, on livejournal. They've written so many great fics, Muse in particular is one of my favorites (a muggle, artist AU), but the whole list is worth checking out!
picascribit on ff.net
Picascribit also posts all of their fics on ff.net, and I think I've recced most of their longer wolfstar fics on this blog over the years already anyways but two of my personal favorites are Highland Fling (a muggle AU set in Scotland) and Discards (a muggle AU set in Seattle with trans!Sirius), but I love all of their fics!
wolfstarwarehouse's ff.net rec list
wolfstarwarehouse posted a ff.net rec list in 2016, I remember reading All Kidding Aside and To Kiss a Bloke off that list back then, I don't think I've read the other fics but maybe now is the time for me to check them out!
Beekeeping in the Daylight podfic
Beekeeping in the Daylight is a wonderful muggle AU by halictus-writer and there is now a podfic by itsaash with a non-ao3 download link.
Alright I think I'll post this now and if I think of any more I'll just add them or make a part 2. If you have any faves you'd add to this list or if you're a writer who also posts somewhere else except ao3 feel free to add yours as a reblog or comment, so the list gets longer! <3

The King (Conan Gray) wolfstar au is suchhhhh a good idea omg
Sirius who's been going through so many girls that it's actually quite alarming, Sirius claims they go on actual dates and that it's an actual relationship each time, but they hardly last more than two months, minus Mary who had been dating Sirius for five before she broke up with him. Sirius comes back to the dorm, whining about how no one ever feels right, and that they all suck anyways. But it's always Remus who he complains to. Remus with his small smile and warm brown eyes, and the way he always pets Sirius' head when he grumbles and whines. Nothing could be better.
Remus who has always had a thing for Sirius, who was devastated when Sirius started getting around until he realized that at the end of the day, at the end of each relationship, Sirius went to him. Sirius crawled into his bed. Sirius wanted to be comforted by him. Not James, not Peter, not the next girl he had set his eyes on, but him. And that made him feel amazing, in some probably horrible way. That despite how many hearts Sirius breaks, despite how many other lips his had touched, he was always who Sirius came back to in the end.
He just wished that maybe there could be more.

Sirius, holding a barbie: *high pitched voice* Hi Ken! I was thinking about going back to school and starting a career!
Remus, holding a Ken doll: *deep voice* Nonsense Barbie. You're staying home and having my kids.
James: What the fuck are you guys doing?
Remus: Playing systematic oppression.

Can we all just agree that 16 year old Sirius tricking Snape into going inside the shrieking shack knowing that werewolf!Remus was inside it is horrifying and should not be cancelled out by the fact that Severus might have already known that Remus was a werewolf? Or is asking for basic human empathy too much work for Marauder stans?
The amount of people who’ve deluded themselves into believing everything that happened in that incident was Snape’s fault astonish me. That, alongside the excuses they make for SWM, make me seriously question how they actually treat irl victims, or whether they simply throw all common sense out the window when the victim in question is Severus.
Newsflash: Even if Severus 10000% knew that Remus was a werewolf, Sirius still deliberately led him into the shack, even when he knew there was a guarantee of Severus being either killed or infected. Both of which would not only end Snape’s life (either figuratively or literally), but would mentally destroy Sirius’s best friend (Remus) and possibly get him executed/imprisoned.
It was still extremely inhuman of Sirius to do, and he should have been punished properly. He was the one who revealed Remus’s darkest secret in the first place, the chain of events never would’ve been set off had he not told Severus anything. Saying “well Snape shouldn’t have-” is grade A victim-blaming. Perhaps Snape shouldn’t have done what he did, but that doesn’t make him any less of a victim, that’s like thinking a woman isn’t a victim because “it’s her fault for being out so late.” And do people not realise that Snape would have never even tried to figure out what Remus was hiding had he not been part of the group that “relentlessly bullied” Severus in the first place?? That’s not entirely Remus’s fault, but it definitely isn’t Snape’s either.
So, whether or not Snape knew, Sirius still withheld vital information that would’ve prevented a teenager from nearly dying, for the sole purpose of having a laugh about it, and he couldn’t even bother to understand what the consequences would mean if his sick prank had actually succeeded—for Severus, for his best friend, and even for Sirius himself. Severus potentially knowing is hardly pertinent, so stop clinging onto an argument that was never even confirmed or hinted at and start addressing your fave’s flaws.

*I have a theory that the reason why this poll has its results is because it went through Marauder-centric circles, and I think they usually HC Sirius as shorter. Let's see if the audience bias in my circles (leaning harder on the canon-compliant angle) have something else to say.

What it's like as a Marauder's Era fanfic writer.
~~~♤~~~
You want to know what it's like writing Marauders fanfiction?
Trying to find anything to replace the word SERIOUS.
How many times can I put the words honestly and genuinely and earnestly before my brain literally fries??
I had to change my entire vocabulary because of him. I'm only able to use it with the intention of that joke. I wish i was kidding when I say I can't even say it in person anymore, it's too ingrained.
"Fuck, wait. Not serious, HE'S Sirius." -My Brain. Every. Single. Time.
It's also having to rewrite the sentences: "He sat up straight-", "He walked straight to-", "He looked them straight in the eyes-"
Because NO THE FUCK THEY'RE NOT. THEY'RE NOT STRAIGHT. EVERYONE'S GAY.
Writing Marauders fanfiction is the most rewarding, angst-filled, tooth-rottingly fluffy, WONDERFUL thing in the world, and it literally kills me daily because I don't know THAT many words Sirius can you please just spare me???
it will always be sirius > remus for me
not because sirius is "cooler" or "funnier" or whatever. not because remus is "too boring" or "too cold".
but because of their reactions regarding harry's home situation.
Remus left Harry alone for 13 years. He acknowledged that Harry's relatives were bad in the ootp and still did nothing when Harry was sent back. He didn't bother staying in contact or popping by at all (even before poa, he never reached out to harry) despite the fact that he had the ability to.
Harry was Sirius's number one priority- ALWAYS. Sirius broke out of a prison for him. He sent him multiple gifts and letters, and even offered him a place to stay. He made numerous attempts to stay in contact (if not by letters, then by Floo). He would've gone and plucked Harry from the Dursleys himself had he not been in hiding and wanted for mass murder.
idk. maybe sirius could understand harry, given that he had a similar childhood- but that doesn't excuse remus's behavior. i find it unforgivable that he at the very least never stayed in contact the way sirius did. he was absent for most of harry's life.
to me, leaving him alone was the worst thing to do.
