It was one game. He could do this.

Regulus did his best to focus, to scan the area for the Snitch, to do his damn job, to not worry about James Potter for half a second.

Of course, that was too much to wish for.

Because ever since they'd begun sneaking around at night, Potter had become even more insufferable. And worse, Regulus had started to find it cute. (He really needed to be tested for Amortentia.)

So, even though he'd promised himself to stay focused during this very important Gryffindor v. Slytherin game, he should have known something would happen.

He was in the zone at first. Completely unaware of what Potter was doing. Until Remus Lupin's voice cut through his concentration.

"Aaaand James Potter has the Quaffle, he's headed up the Pitch!" Lupin commentated excitedly.

Regulus tried to ignore it, tried not to be excited for the boy on the opposite team, tried to drown out the noise.

But then Remus said nervously, "What- what is Potter doing? Is he- is he waving?"

Unable to resist, Regulus spun around to see what Potter was up to, only to see the scarlet-clad boy waving. At him.

"Hi, Reggie!" Potter yelled as he passed, almost dropping the Quaffle in his happiness.

"Potter! Fucking- pay attention!" Regulus snapped, gesturing to the goalposts nearby, only too aware that he was coaching Potter on how to score against him.

But James could only grin. "This one's for you!" he shouted, before spinning around and throwing the Quaffle wildly toward the goalposts.

And as everyone watched...it sailed about fifty feet to the left of the closest post.

Groaning, Regulus leaned forward, knocking his head on his broomstick. At least this meant Slytherin was still in the lead.

The Harry Potter fandom is fascinating. You have:

Fans of Harry Potter's era. Pretty straightforward.

Fans of both the Harry Potter era and the Marauders era. Believe in HP canon for both.

Fans of only the Marauders era who mostly subscribe to canon but wouldn't operate in the era of the books.

Fans of the Marauders era who have not read the HP books and do not care about the HP canon.

It would be so fascinating to take a seminar on this phenomenon. Especially item 4.

And then I'd want to write 20 page papers on the fandom perception of wolfstar, both whether or not it's canon and the interpretation fans have of the dynamic.

And then a 50 page paper on the incredibly strange treatment that Barty Crouch Jr. gets in this fandom, considering that he was a sociopath in canon who was considered Voldemort's most loyal supporter and he has been babygirl-ified.

And then a 100 page paper on how 20 years after the books came out, jegulus went from zero to one of AO3's top ships in a matter of about three years. It came from nothing, with no basis whatsoever in canon, and took the fandom by storm.

Like this is all incredibly interesting to me. I would like to attend this seminar. Hell, I would like to run this seminar. Marauders Fandom University.

James is observant when it comes to feelings and relationships.

After so many years living in a dorm with the pinning mess that is Remus and Sirius, James had his observation skills sharpened to the max. He noticed every secret relationship happening in the castle. If he met or briefly watched the people involved, he always recognised the crushes, the love and unrequited feelings.

However, he ridiculously, stupidly, completely and absolutely missed the fact Regulus loved him back.

Which is especially embarrassing after all those times he spent gossiping with Reg about the relationships going on in the castle and always saying that yeah, he does notice people's feelings every time.

"You're an idiot," Regulus says when he breaks the kiss.

"Maybe," James grins. "But I'm fine with it now."

So maybe James isn't as observant when it comes to feelings and relationships as he thought. But that hardly matters now.
