Let's talk about cake...

Sometimes people tell me that you can't make a cake without eggs and milk. But I can't eat either of those, and I happen to like cake. I've had some really absolutely delicious cakes without dairy and eggs! And let me tell you, I am absolutely excited when I get to have cake I can eat. You see, it's very hard to find vegan cakes, so when I get the chance to have some it's wonderful.

My friend, @seedsofwinter, can't have almonds. So when he has cake, it can't include nuts or ingredients like almond flour.

I have friends who can't have gluten though, too. And for them? That almond flour may do the spot absolutely perfectly. It's what they need so that they can have cake!

And of course, none of this is easy cake to find. There are so many cakes that one or all of us can't enjoy because of their ingredients.

The experience of getting a perfect cake, and one that you can share with your friends, too? It's genuinely really special. It's an experience you can take joy in together.

If the cake is made correctly and with care, people who do not have allergies and intolerances can enjoy it too! (It's not cake, but there's a particular popsicle brand I pick up for me that my teen—who has no allergies—absolutely adores. I get those popsicles for myself since I can't have other goodies, but part of the fun is in sharing and I'm glad my teen loves them. And more people buying those popsicles encourages the company to make more vegan items, too, which is a win!)

Sometimes people complain because they don't want to eat the gluten-free cake, even though someone at the office is allergic to gluten (no, they aren't just making it up).

The push forward continues.

Except what if this wasn't about cakes?

What if it's about representation in media.

There are lots of allo cis hetero relationships portrayed in media. It's everywhere you look. It's a bit harder to find a gay couple in media. More like needing to go to the gluten-free section of the grocery store or a specialty bakery, right? And ace and nonbinary representation? Well, guess we need to also leave out the eggs and milk, and that gets a bit more challenging yet.

Luckily for all of these, it's becoming easier to find. It's hard, and you still sometimes have to go looking for it.

What I'm asking is that those of you especially looking to eat the gluten-free cakes not insist that every cake must be made with milk and eggs (those who want to consume queer media to not insist it be allo cis homosexual). Because that's going to leave someone out. Some people are going to seek a gluten-free, nut-free, egg-free, and milk-free cake (what are we at? Queer, asexual, aromantic, trans, nonbinary, take your pick; we’re not even going to get into racial rep and disability in queer media right now). And that's okay. They should get to have nice things, too. And in the meantime, there's some great gluten-free cake (queer media) for you to enjoy!

Is this clear enough? I rather like this analogy. Because everyone deserves nice things. And it may be stereotypical for an ace person to like cake, but I do think it's rather yummy.

More queer media that doesn't focus on being bullied and harrassed. More queer media that doesn't centre around cis gay men. More queer media that features aros and aces. More queer media that isn't about suffering. More queer media that has genderqueer people. More queer media with characters who use multiple sets of pronouns. More queer media that has supportive parents (especially fathers). More queer media that isn't about wanting to be 'normal'. More queer media that represents all the facets of drag. More queer media that represents the whole queer community

Do you like media about trans men/transmasculine characters but don't know where to find it?

That's sooo crazy because I have this little spreadsheet I'm working on where I'm trying to document all media with protagonists/major characters who are FTM or transmasculine.

The spreadsheet currently has 200+ entries spread across the following categories:

Books

Manga

Memoirs and non-fiction

Movies

TV Shows

Graphic novels / Comics

Webcomics

Audio dramas

Books and movies are also sorted by:

Which character is trans (MC, love interest, antagonist, etc)

If the trans character is POC

The trans character's sexuality (Because I saw lots of transhet guys sad about only being able to find gay romances)

If the author/actor is also trans (if we know for sure)

It's free to use, and free to add to as well! Editing permissions are on, and I check on the spreadsheet every now and then to make sure everything is in order and to clean up.

If you know something that isn't on the list, please add it! You don't have to fill in every single column, but fill it to the best of your abilities.

Nimona was the first piece of media i found after realizing i was nonbinary that spoke to me, i read the webcomic every wedsneday in my history class in 7th grade. Middle school was hard for me because i was one of two kids in my whole grade that was out as some form of queer (pan, i didnt come out as nb until high school) and i lost a lot of friends from it. But also from just being "weird." I tried to come out to my dad at one point and heard nearly the same line balister says to nimona in the new movie "wouldnt it be easier to be a girl?"

I am now 21, working in a library where i see kids gravitate more and more towards graphic novels and we have the nimona graphic novel on our shelves, and i have waited so long to watch the movie, that when i finally watched it, i could not believe it was not just speaking to me, but screaming to me. Im a nonbinary individual that loves men in a queer way, and yet has been a weird little girl outcast for things other people did not understand. I have seen grown adults attack children online for not being straight or cis, and seen them say it is under the guise of protecting their kids. In the time between now and reading the webcomic in my history class, i have felt so many different ways about my identity and my existence, and holy shit does the nimona movie speak to me. In almost every stage of my life.

N D Stevenson, and all the people who made this movie survive and be possible, you were able to reach into the core of my being and make me feel just as seen as i first did when i laughed about shark boobs in a middle school computer lab. Thank you so much!!

What do y'all want to see more of in genderfluid media?

Like, let's say there will be a new character in your favorite show who just happens to be genderfluid. How do you want them to represent themselves? In what ways you want them to show their genderfluidity?

This is question mainly to genderfluid folks but if you're not genderfluid you can speak up too! Just make sure to state that you're not genderfluid first.

i feel like the strong trans community here on tumblr exists despite tumblr itself. the fact that tumblr, as a company, publicly celebrates its trans community while using their moderation to disproportionately affect trans people and allowing violent transphobia to exist on their platform mostly unchecked is absurd.

Why the fight for queer rights isn't over (it should be obvious, but to some people it isn't)

Hi, Tumblr, this is Asmi. If you know me, it's probably as the Good Omens Mascot, which is flattering. I've found so much love and queer positivity in the good omens fandom, and the beautiful thing is how it's canon. Many people outside the queer community don't realise how crucial media and communities like this are. Right now since I'm on break from education, I'm on tumblr for most of the time I'm awake (which is not a lot, I nap more than Crowley). It's wild how different it is from the real world, that I live in at least.

I'm sure a lot of you might have had a similar experience to this: Basically, two people in my life, my bio father and my ex, both told me to my face that queer people needed to stop calling themselves oppressed and how now it's queer people who hold all the power and are oppressing other people. With all due respect, what the fuck.

I live in India, and being a trans guy who is bi and aspec, it's a cesspit. While I'm gendered correctly on Tumblr, and people are so loving and supportive, in real life even my friends who say they support me misgender me 90% of the time. Same with my family. In my previous college which I had to leave because of bullying by both the students and admin, even the queer students would misgender me (I told them I used they/them pronouns, because he/him would have been too unsafe, but even that they didn't manage). In the college I'll join next, it won't be safe for me to be out at all, at risk of losing opportunities and safety. Gay marriage is still illegal. Homophobia and transphobia is the norm. This doesn't even cover all the daily indignities like queerphobic jokes, casual discourse on whether or not we deserve rights, etc. Discrimination against aroace-spec people is rampant even within the queer community, worldwide.

And I live in an urban area, one of the largest cities in India known for its progressiveness and for being relatively safe for queer people. I am privileged compared to other queer people here. The story in other cities, in rural areas which make up most of the country, is far more horrifying. I'm unqualified to speak about anything other than my own experience, but if you can (if you are in a stable and calm enough mental state to handle the information, please put your mental health first) I'm sure there are first person accounts on the many forums.

The fight for equality is not over. It doesn't end with laws riddled with loopholes, it doesn't end even with laws that genuinely help the queer community. Aside from the huge problems of living safely and with access to equal opportunities and resources for people, we deserve dignity, peace, and the right to feel accepted and that we're not an abnormality. And so much more.

I haven't said anything that hasn't been said before, but it can't be said enough. To the queer people reading this, take all my love. We need to stand together, eliminate discourse over who is queer enough to be queer, and be the safe space that the world will not provide for us.

It's not over, and it hasn't been won by a long shot, but what matters is that we're fighting. Even existing as ourselves in a world that tells us it is a crime, is defiance and a step towards making this right.
