i’ve talked about this before , but one of the main reasons i was in denial about being aroace was bc of the feelings and fantasies id have for fictional characters. i’d have full story lines in my head of falling in love with or getting busy with a fictional and i would feel those romantic/sexual feelings.

but when i’ve had opportunities in real life to be in romantic or sexual (this is very rare and i never want to receive) relationships, it doesn’t interest me at all. even when it comes to my celebrity crushes, i only think they’re attractive past an aesthetic level when they are playing a specific character.

it took me so long to realize that i’ve never felt these feelings for real life people. i just thought that i needed to wait for the right person to come along, and ive tried, but these feelings never came.

now that i’ve figured this out, it’s made me feel more at easy that i’m not just waiting for someone to come along and change my mind. i don’t feel empty anymore.

What No One Talks About

You know what no one ever talks about? How meeting "the one" doesn't make you any less aspec.

Like, you know when aphobes are all like, "You just haven't met the *right person* yet"? It doesn't follow logically.

A few days ago, my queerplatonic partner and I decided that there is a romantic element to our relationship, and that "demiromantic" describes our romantic orientations better. So yes, I "met the right person" and developed romantic feelings. But does that make me any less aro? Absolutely not. I wasn't alloromantic all along and just needed to realize it. You don't NOT develop romantic feelings your whole life and nullify your entire aromantic experience just because you find out you're arospec more than vanilla aro.

So yes, aspecs *might* meet "the one" and develop romantic and/or sexual feelings (not me, though, I'm ace as heck 😂). They might find out they're gray or demi. But that doesn't make them ANY less aspec.

Fight me on this.

I forget that asexuality has been severely misrepresented and that a lot of people don’t actually know what it is as a result so here is an overview of what asexuality is, what it’s not, and how acephobic is represented. there is so much more to asexuality than just this. I didn’t even mention the medicalization of asexuality!

I also rec Yasmin Benoit, a Black aroace lingerie model who is fighting misinformation about asexuality and shedding light on racism within the asexual community. if you’re interested in more resources feel free to dm me!

EDIT: I updated the slide that refers to asexuality as “aspec” to “acespec.” The term aspec refers to the a community as a whole -- both asexuals and aromantics -- while acespec refers to the asexual spectrum and arospec referes to the aromantic spectrum. You can see this mirrored in the terms acephobia (experienced by aces), arophobia (experienced by aros), and aphobia (experienced by both aces and aros).
