911 has been on my dash lately and it's what I needed, I'm glad I started watching. Someone close to me is dying and the show has been oddly healing.
911 is definitely a soap opera, and the occasional Christian sentiments and acts of god probably hit better with Americans than with me, but it's a show with touching ruminations about life, death, healing, tragedy, love, family, and what it means to be an individual and part of a community. What we owe each other, and what we don't.
I'm in season 3 now and I'm pleasantly surprised by how queer friendly the narratives are. Henrietta has an amazing presence on the show, so too does Buck. (Some of the writers worked on Buffy and Angel and I do think it explains the character driven arcs, easy queerness, and quirky humour). I love all the main characters. How could I not? So much time has been spent filling them in and much of the Drama is used to say something greater about how to move through the Belly of the Whale rather than existing gratuitously to cause rifts between the characters. It's just... nice.... and a rare choice for a show.
The Queerness comes with a caveat, however, US shows are a bit predictable in how they write queer characters. Hen can be one of the mains but her wife can't. Michael and Josh can exist on screen as long as they are side characters and only mention their love lives once a season. Buck can have an incredibly homoerotic relationship with his best friend (Buck: best friend and codependent co-parent) but can only voice his sexuality in later seasons (even if he's very bisexual now and I'm only on season 3). Buck is a beautiful young manly man you see, we mustn't alienate the young men whose demographic he's supposed to represent (sorry for the cynicism).
Really though, 911's relationship writing is top notch except for when it comes to Buck or Eddie's love interests. With the exception of Buck and Maddie, their characters' best relationships are either with each other or with Christopher and I can see why Buddie is such a popular ship. It's more obvious, too, when the romantic storylines are as good as they are for the other characters (and I'm hard to please). It's like the writing is super thoughtful about why a romantic relationship works for everyone else but keeps forcing it with Eddie and Buck because they want the pretty young men to be with the pretty young women. Buck's best love interest was Abby because they were trying to explore why it worked even though it was obvious it eventually wouldn't, that was in season 1 and I don't see it getting better. Look, all I'm going to say is that multiple partners only work when all parties know they're in a romantic relationship. That way you can be honest and mindful about how committed you are. Maybe that's why their relationships don't work now. Buck and Eddie don't realise they're dating each other.
Anyway, thank you Tumblr for bringing this show to me at this time in my life. Also, if you're interested, my otp is Maddie and Chimney. Don't tell me if they don't work out or you'll make me cry.

been thinking abt how the marauders era relationships would pan out in every universe and here are my thoughts!!
Wolfstar — lowkey controversial but I don’t think they’re soulmates — they’re more, kinda-wrong person, right time. I think they’d only end up together when things go to shit. Which is part of why I love them so much and why I love them in the canon universe. James and Lily are dead, Peter is a traitor, remus is unemployed and sirius….poor sirius. So yeah, They’re just two fucked up lads trying their best to love despite the world being against them. In universes where they don’t fall in love, can imagine they think the other’s a little off-putting or perhaps no really strong emotions. I think that’s why their connection in the canon universe is so special to me, because I just don’t think they’re relationship would be as prominent if circumstances were different (in other universes).
Prongsfoot — they’re literally soulmates. In every fucking universe. Sometimes, it’s platonic (tho never strictly), sometimes, romantic, sometimes an intense sexual bond as enemies?? Either way they’re always a little bit in love with each other. I do hc James as straight in the canon universe but yeah they definitely made out. And in other universes where James is queer they’re having the time of their lives. Anyways so yeah. Soulmates in every universe.
Jily — Love Jily! I see them as a first love situation. Some universes (like the main one) their love becomes immortalised. However, in others, maybe they move on and find other people, but since they were each other’s first love they always have a special place in their heart for each other <33
Jegulus — …………………………………………………………..
Prongstail — always doomed in the long run. Kinda childhood friends to lovers to ……. . A bit of unrequitedness because I don’t think James could ever love Peter enough. And in every universe Peter always has an inferiority complex and bottled resentment. They’re relationship rarely ends well.
Snily — ooh this is an interesting one. Similar to prongsfoot, I think they’re also a kind of doomed childhood-friend-to-lovers. Except I think that in the universes where Sev does not end being a bigot, they could probably date for a bit. They wouldn’t last tho and would remain as friends. In one universe Lily is an out and proud Lesbian and Sev is a closeted t-girl and they date for a bit but eventually decide to become friends (Lily still supports transfem!Sev in her transition tho). Canon universe tho,,, Sev had a crush on her and maybe Lily did too, but fifth year and James lol.
Nobleflower — ooooh love me some sapphic friends-to-star-crossed-lovers! I feel like in every universe they’d be on opposing sides, depending on circumstance.
Marylene — Friends to lovers, right person wrong time in the canon universe, but in other universes they’re thriving. They still would have had some sort of codependent, homoerotic friendship leading up to it lmaoo.
Dorlene — I like to think they’re always rivals in some context. Sometimes it leads to a fiery relationship, and sometimes it’s just aggressive sexual tension while they’re on opposing fields.
Jeverus — oooh people hate this but. Toxic rivals/enemies to lovers. Sometimes it works out, most of the time it doesn’t. The hate they hold for each is very strong but so is the sex

What made you ship it?
I had Minthara with me when I rescued Florrick from Wyrm's Rock once and the visual of them together, the two sexiest creatures in the entire game, made my pupils dilate so wide that I had to turn down the brightness on my monitor. Instant OTP, but then once I started back-calculating a canon-plausible dynamic, I realized that were literally my perfect ship.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
We got elven MILFs, we got pride and prejudice, we got the sheer juiciness of applying mundane relationship issues to two freaks who don't think they're freaks. They have everything and nothing in common. They have shared trauma they'll never talk about, not that they're capable of communicating effectively. They're in love at a certain point, but it doesn't make a difference. They could probably work it out if Minthara were less insane or if Florrick were more insane, but they're both so set in their ways that changing is just out of the question. They're a soap opera starring the two most self-contained women in the universe.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
N/A as there's no such thing, but I think in general fandom leans toward happily-ever-after as a ship default so this kind of ship, doomed to fail and not even really anyone's fault, is super underrated. I like drama, but also I think a happy ending just doesn't suit a lot of ships. Maybe there's some universe where these two could overcome their issues, but it's definitely not canon.
Jaheira/Nine-Fingers
What made you ship it?
"ASTELE" out of the blue had me like 👀👀👀. All of their interactions are just so homoerotic sorry. It's also funny to have this hater-hater relationship between grown ass women. An immensely "for ME" ship.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
I think they'd be really well-suited for each other! They have chemistry, and the feeling I get is that they could be a sort of long-term somewhat-more-than-friends with benefits situation. I'm always interested in alternative relaionship dynamics, so I like to imagine they're both very comfortable with a pretty casual thing; they're both really busy women, and I feel like Jaheira doesn't really want a new one-and-only nor Nine-Fingers a ball-and-chain. No love lost for not being one another's first priorities, they fulfill each others' needs and make each other's lives better even if they aren't "together" in the way most people understand. The sweetest thing is that Nine-Fingers watches over Jaheira's children when she's gone, like that's so caring and she does it without being asked or taking credit.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Not necessarily an unpopular opinion, but it always comes up so: no, Jaheira is not Nine-Finger's grandmother lol. She was just dogging her for being old, and it wouldn't make any sense based on the kids we know Jaheira has

jack + clara: specifically jack and immortal!clara from post-s10. they’re not in like a committed romantic relationship, they just have an intensely romantic friendship, a lot of sex, got drunk married in space vegas, and then just never got a divorce
best friends, literally inseparable:
rose + donna: I KNOW donna would have rose in tears w laughter 24/7. they’d have so much fun and talk so much shit together and the doctor would never know peace again and okay: HEAR ME OUT. If rose fell in love w metacrisis!ten…. I think she also would’ve fallen in love w metacrisis!donna. That’s all
rose + bill: rose at 19 and bill at 19 would be besties, but bill would have a MASSIVE crush on s4 rose <3 they have a lot in common and rose finds bills awkwardness and sense of humor enormously endearing

rose + amy: again, they’d be friends but just wouldn’t end up hanging out much! they ALWAYS back each other up in arguments though
rose + rory: I think they’d both find each other really sweet! don’t really have any other thoughts abt them
jack + rory: jack flirts w him, rory pretends to be annoyed but it actually genuinely flattered
jack + bill: bill is entertained by him and they have some wlw/mlm solidarity moments but eh, they never get super close
donna + amy: would rly rly rly enjoy making fun of the doctor together. that’s it

And the entire story is just Baobhan being terrorized while Dobrynya and Morgan make out in the background.

That moment when you (living vessel for your brother’s vengeance who immediately committed suicide upon fulfilling your goal due to perceiving the cold embrace of death as warmer than the cruel clutches of your fellow man) come across another girl (a hollow mockery of a human being born and bred to slaughter without a care who relates better to broken bones, sinew, and blood than she does to living beings and can kill her friends at a simple order)and link up (have intense homoerotic discussions about death dying and purpose) over tea and wine (cups of literal blood) and fuck nasty (memento memori style)
Olga Marie Animusphere x Ereshkigal
If you haven’t read Afterlife by nd7878 and you have any form of attachment to Olga or Ereshkigal or see the similarities between the two please read it, it’s amazing and I love it so much it fulfills my Olga Marie cravings very well. I just think the idea of a woman who already sees herself as an offering, offering herself up to a worthy warrior who desperately wishes to stop destroying things she loves to be incredibly interesting. Especially because in my mind Jeanne would probably have little issue with letting Barghest eat her regularly as long as she recovers decently enough. They’re interesting i have fic ideas for them i think Jeanne would enjoy being devoured gruesomely. The knowledge of having a set place for your body to go rather than being burned and desecrated just to be tossed into the river and washed away. I am far too invested in Jeanne D’ Arc. A part of me thinks she would enjoy having something resembling a proper corpse since she was torched to ash and thrown into a river rather than properly being laid to rest. I have vivid images of their entire routine can you tell u have been plagued by yuri visions for far too long?
Baobhan Sith x Galatea
You know how popular girls in hs always have that one girl that isn’t popular or important or really much of anything to a majority of the student body that they don’t play about? Yeah that’s Galatea to her. They hit it off over sculpting because Baobhan has a general affinity for art that includes her love of fashion and eventually they become friends which is incredibly strange to Baobhan because she is deeply unused to being cared for and loved by anyone that isn’t her mother and even then the way she goes about it is very much not like her mother (it’s okay Morgan you tried sweetie). I just think it would be nice to see Galatea slowly help Baobhan build a healthy relationship with love, loving and being loved. They’d be cute. I also think Galatea would find having her blood sucked to be an interesting experience considering she probably finds the fact she has blood to be quite novel.
Merlin (Prototype) x Morgan Le Fay
With benefits. I don’t know what to call their relationship so they’re just with benefits. Morgan would just vent out her frustration on her while Merlin just takes it because why the hell not, being half-succubus has its perks. Additionally, she’d rely on Merlin to have a few moments of complete thoughtlessness and freedom from the stress and general fuckery of Faerie Britain by just allowing herself to fall for the effects of her beauty. Honestly it’s more so method of relaxation for Morgan then a genuine relationship but I think it’s interesting. They probably have insane conversations about the world that usually end in Morgan forcing her to shut up because she says something she doesn’t want to hear but isn’t untrue. Occasionally in moments of weakness Merlin will ask Morgan if she wants her to take her away to Avalon and leave this place for the faeries she hates so much, and Morgan will always refuse dispute herself.

I'd let them have access to my library. If it's a book, I'll let them figure out when they're ready to handle it.
(Works fine as long as you're a decent parent and answer questions that come up without being a weirdo about it and freaking them out so they never ask you anything again.)
For films and other things... hmm... it's tricky because all of the formative tings for me were the genre I'd call Weird Art Films About Weird Sex.
If my kid were shaping up to be that kind of weirdo at 14, maybe I'd leave some of these around, but I think it would be pretty intrusive to thrust them upon anybody outside of a film school seminar. Maybe Harold & Maude. My parents rented that when I was a tween. It made An Impression. It's rare for me to see something even two or three times, but Harold and Maude I've seen dozens.
I still think the opening to Harold and Maude is one of the best of any film:

You immediately know what kind of people both of these characters are and that this isn't going to be a simple comedy, dark or otherwise.
The first time I watched it, I knew nothing about the film and was surprised at both this and all of Harold's other antics. It's hilarious until it isn't. It's a movie about zest for life vs. wanting to die, and it walks an interesting line tonally. I remember rewatching it to show it to friends in college... and for the first time understanding that look Harold gets when he sees Maude's arm.

There was definitely media I loved pre-puberty, but the things I remember are all like Nancy Drew.
I consumed vast quantities of mystery, and it's probably why I'm a mystery novelist today, but I don't remember anything specific that feels formative in other ways. I wouldn't try to stop a kid from reading trash. I remember how infuriating it was to have adults constantly trying to make me read something "better" than Nancy Drew. But I wouldn't specifically hand my kid those or any of the other formulaic junk series (Sweet Valley High et al.). They'll find whichever ones are popular at the time just fine.

There's a very particular feeling of my brain lighting up that I remember mostly from my teen years. Those media made me quiver and have to pause the movie. I felt seen or maybe I felt too much to handle. That's the feeling I associate with formative media for me.
Here are the ones that instantly spring to mind even after all this time:
Velvet Goldmine - Music fan investigates the glam rockers of his youth, meditating on his sexual awakening and trying to solve the mystery of where one of them went. Ewan McGregor's tweet is the sequel. I will accept no other outcome.
Crash - James Spader at the peak of his beauty falls into the world of car crash fetishists who are dealing with the ennui of modern life and the alienation of the big city and technology by becoming perverts. Contains people going down on scars and tattoos, fetishy leg braces, and what teen me assumed was homoerotic subtext. (Spoiler: it was not subtext.)
Matador - A serial killer murders her victims like a bullfighter would; she stalks her favorite retired bullfighter who is also a serial killer. Antonio Banderas plays a dweeb like always in Spain. (The rest of Almodóvar's 80s and 90s movies were also favorites.)
Kissed - The fluffy necrophilia movie
The City of Lost Children - Less horny, but what is up with Miette and One's vibe? Visually a feast. Ten times the movie Amélie is. Sorry, not sorry.
Cemetery Man - Rupert Everett kills zombies in this bizarre Italian horror movie based on a comic book character drawn to look like Rupert Everett. My stepfather thought it looked like something I'd like and rented it for one of my birthday parties in high school. Around the time of the quasi necrophilia sex scene I realized 1. he'd chosen well and 2. he had clearly not read the back too carefully.
The Pillow Book - Japanese-Chinese novelist named after Sei Shonagon has a battle of literary wits with the publisher who blackmailed her father into sex with him. Involves a lot of calligraphy on naked men, including Ewan McGregor.
Sex, Lies & Videotape - Unfulfilled housewife has her world turned upside down when her shitty husband's college best friend comes to visit. This dude has become unable to be with women after a bad breakup and interviews and videotapes women discussing their masturbation habits for his own private use. Contains a famous and stupid quote about men falling in love with the people they sleep with and women becoming more and more attracted to the people they love, but the movie is far less gender normative than the character saying that.
Tesis - Uptight film student who pretends not to like violence decides to do a thesis on violence in Spanish media. Her advisor dies while watching a mysterious tape he got from somewhere. She steals it, finds out it's a snuff film, and investigates with the help of a creepy horror film nerd.
The best scene is when they're watching some violent shit she asked him for ("for her thesis") and she says "What kind of people watch this stuff?"
He answers: "You, for example."
That one I discovered when my roommate in Japan was watching it a couple of years after college. Many of these I saw in high school. That's the range where I remember things being particularly formative. Or maybe it's about what I'm open to at different points in my life: I think weird art films can still make me feel too much, but I don't always like that feeling, and I don't seek them out as much now.
Knife+Heart made me flash back to that era though. It's a neon-drenched period piece about a lesbian director of artsy gay male pornos investigating a serial killer targeting her actors. The sheer levels of meta insanity and horny murder scenes, my god!!!
Running through all of these are themes of ambiguous sexuality, often queer but also non-genitally-focused, massive quantities of voyeurism, meditations on what it means to be a fan, and a boatload of death=sex=death vibes.

That's not quite what you asked, but basically, my own formative media isn't something I'd share with just anyone. If people want to watch necrophilia-filled art films of the 90s, I think they need to choose that for themselves.
I guess all that access to Beatrix Potter and watching basically no TV other than Mystery! or Masterpiece Theater (i.e. UK costume dramas catering to a teaboo market and co-funded by the US) during my early childhood had an effect. So did going to schools where we studied Asian American history and read Dragonwings.
None of those media stand out. I'd share them with my kid, but one example is as good as another. Knives Out delivers substantially the same experience as most of them. Watching whatever anime is hot now will be as good as watching the anime I liked when I was young.

Valeria headcanons (cuz I love her.)

I love this women so much lmao. Speaking of love lets talk about familial love and relationship. I’ve seen a lot of people say Valeria has daddy issues… she definitely does not lmao. No but it all honesty, she most definitely has mommy issues. Her and her mom, can never have a genuine conversation without getting into an argument, or they just act civil, which is usually just them ignoring their ever growing problems with each other. Alejandro mentioned Valeria having brothers briefly, now i don’t know how many she has but I’m assuming somewhere between two or three. She loves and hates them. Now pulling some information from my own family(extended) and patterns I see in my own community. Hispanic mothers tend to absolutely baby the men in the family, especially their sons, if they ask to go out on a school night they’ll usually say yes, even when they haven’t done their chores or are failing classes. But as a daughter… no. It’s a no. You’ll actually end up doing their chores and than be told you need to do better in school even though you only got a B. The double standards are crazy sometimes. And this most likely what contributed to Valeria’s strained relationship with her mom. Her relationship with her brother’s are good though, but they do piss her off, mainly because of that double standard. I think she’s either the second oldest or middle child. She loves her dad, and grandma. Daddy’s girl, I think her father definitely was the more laid back parent. He spoiled her and definitely was excited when her mom was pregnant, and they found out it was a girl. She loves her grandma, she sometimes wonders how such a sweet woman could make her mom. Her mom probably saw too much of herself in Valeria, but also so much of what she’s not.
Friends. Valeria to me, seems like she has one maybeee two, really close friends. She did really well in school, always excelled, loved the competition of it all. She did sports in school, probably looked up to her brothers and tried following in their footsteps, she did soccer (football), swim team, cross country, and did boxing even though her parents said it wasn’t lady like. Her best friend since like fourth grade, would come to all her sport meets. They were really close, they were in all the same classes up until high-school, they talked shit about their parents or kids at school, they skipped school, caused trouble; because I just know Valeria probably pranked one or two teachers but in very personal and targeted ways, she never got caught. Honestly her and her best friend, had a homoerotic friendship. Lmao.
I didn’t grow up in Mexico but I visited quite often as a kid, and it’s no surprise that most people there are very catholic. (It’s next too impossible to find tampons sometimes, and you can thank purity culture and religion for that.) Take that in mind. I don’t think she had internalized homophobia, but she genuinely thought of it as a phase of sorts… It was not a phase. Her and her best friend would kind of experiment together, they kissed, made out, lingering touches, but they never went further. Valeria, had kissed a few guys in high school, but when she kissed her friend, it felt right you know? Valeria at some point did fall in love with her best friend, she never admitted to herself until her best friend started dating some mediocre guy. She was low key hurt and honestly jealous. Said mediocre guy and her best friend got married a few years after they graduated high school. Valeria went to the wedding, and while she had convinced herself what they did was just dumb teenage experimentation, she felt very bitter sweet seeing her friend get married to this guy.
Speaking of relationship. Valeria probably dated quite a few guys, but none of them ever made her feel a real type of connection. She also didn’t like a lot of them because didn’t like her taking control, or being so ambitious. (I mentioned Valeria did good in school and was probably the more competitive type; adding onto that she definitely had a passion for politics, and the intricacies off it, I think she wanted to be a politicians, but I bet her mom and brothers kind of just wrote her off about it.) So the men she dated definitely didn’t like how she was so ambitious and dominate both in and outside their relationship and bed. She didn’t take shit from anyone and that included the guys she dated or slept with. if she wanted to be on top or the one in control in bed, and their egos were too fragile for that, she would leave them high dry. Honestly sex with men felt… okay to her. Like she definitely tried to be more submissive and try things they wanted to do… yeah she never finished. Also men’s ego’s and how they viewed her and women were a major deal breaker and turn off, the minuet a guy made misogynistic, comment, that relationship or date ended quick. Honestly for a long time she lied to herself, saying she likes men but just has high standards. Now Maria (Valeria’s actor) said Valeria and Alejandro definitely had something but she also stated she’s not sure if Valeria was in love with Alejandro or she hat plain likes women. Maria also stated the reason why Valeria betrayed the military and became an enforce for La Arana and than became El sin nombre, is because she was treated worse than her male counter parts in the military, so keep that in mind.
Alejandro. Honestly i think Valeria actually did like, or at the very least felt attracted to him. She definitely thought if she was going to date a guy it would be Alejandro. I think both of them had a thing for each other, it was kind of a this weird relationship that was a relationship but also wasn’t confirmed, type of thing. I think what happened was Alejandro seemed like this guy who respected Valeria and her ambitions, and she liked that, she liked how he didn’t mind letting her have control but at some point, Alejandro said or did something, that just reinforced that its really is all men. She wasn’t heartbroken, but she probably felt betrayed in a way. After Alejandro, I think she came to terms that she really just liked women. Her first time with a woman was early on, when she became an enforcer for La Arana. It was this other woman, one of few, and she didn’t really know how to go about asking or telling if she was also into woman. She was honesty and blunt, she straight up just asked the other woman “you into women?” And by Valeria’s surprise. She was and you know what happens from there. She was actually a little nervous to have sex with a woman, just because she never knew how two women did it and because she was coming to terms that she was a lesbian. Valeria’s a quick learner, so she kind of just watched a bunch of porn video’s to get an idea of what to do. After she left her hook ups place, she kind of had like that realization, that she really was attracted to women. Valeria also figured out what it was like to actually enjoy sex. Yeah she got around after that.
Military. Okay so like I stated before, Valeria was probably seen as less than, compared to her male colleagues. But also I think in general throughout her life she was seen as less than her brothers, her class mates, her boyfriends etc… I think she joined the military because it’s a stable job, it makes decent money, but I also think, Valeria thought the military would be about your skills, about your capabilities, she thought it had nothing to do with gender. Oh. Was she wrong. The misogyny, the machismo, the cat calling, the condensation. She tried ignoring it, and just tried to prove herself, but she probably learned pretty quickly, that some guy with half her skill and capabilities would surpass her. The time in the military actually altered her brain chemistry. She was never one for just taking shit from others, and that strengthened and solidified even more. She wasn’t scared to argue or to even get physical with a guy who made a remark. She was probably a little more… idk lenient? With higher commanding officers. But even than sometimes, they’d mansplain or be condescending towards her, she’d just passive aggressively smile at them. Her brothers are in the military and in a way I think, she wanted to prove to her mother she was just as good or better than her brother’s. But when she saw, that a man with half her qualifications were always advance quicker and higher than her, she became an enforcer. Now I’m not an expert on cartels, but cartels have nothing to do if you’re a woman or a man, its about how good at business and how much power you hold. Valeria liked that. She probably became something like a right hand man, or something of higher authority. Now I don’t know what happened for La Arana to essentially fall, but it was probably a mixture of poor business and a lot of paper trails or something. Valeria saw what happened and how it could’ve been prevented. It was most likely already a failing thing, with a mediocre past time. Valeria was steps ahead, she had a plan she ended up convincing most if not all of the enforcers and made a deal with the enforces that were apart of her military unit. She had a plan, she had everything figured out, and she already had people who were helping her build something better. She was smart and and calculating about it all, and that’s why she succeeded. But also I think one thing many look over is her capability to be cruel.
I think some people forget, just how cruel and violent cartels are. And maybe because, we saw Valeria just shoot and get it over with, so it doesn’t really register but… Unfortunately, she probably has done worse, and she needed too. There’s a few big cartels in Mexico, and if she wants to expand and have respect. She has to prove she’s just as unforgiving as them, so you know, interrogations, probably get a lot messier than what we saw with soap. I think to be able to do those things or to give the okay on t0rture, you definitely have to already have some sadistic tendencies. Like you don’t just randomly abandon a piece of your humanity or morals, that is something you have to accept or come to terms with before even acting on or doing. So Valeria probably had known, or come to terms that she could kill without much remorse. She’s not scared to get her hands dirty, and that’s why she has succeeded, that’s why the men who work for her respect and follow her. I think part of her cruelty is this need to prove and show, that she is better than them, and they can’t deny that. Cruelty is a necessity in cartels, and Valeria, understood that, and probably had little to no qualms about that aspect.
Valeria is honestly the epitome of “I support women’s rights and wrongs.”
Tattoos. Okay so Valeria’s tattoo’s actually tell you a lot about out her. Now I didn’t do super in depth research but this what I did find. So one is she believes/follows Santa Muerte. Which for those who don’t know is considered like the grim reaper, or lady of death. Now it’s not an official religion, or religious figure in Mexico, but she is still consider a saint or deity of sorts for those who believe. Santa mureata is kind of controversial, because many cartel members believe in her, and it gives her this kind of dark or cult like vibe. But like most religions, people have used her as a way of justifications of things or symbol for something that is not accordance to the religion. (Now my grandparents immigrated to the US from Sinaloa, and as a kid I would go there, and Sanata Murete is popular there. My family doesn’t believe in it, but I was taught about it and I’m kind of trying to remember so if I get anything wrong apologies.)
So Santa Muerte is not necessarily bad, she represents the acceptance of death, but also to bless you from dying a painful or violent death, wealth, good health, safe delivering to the after life, healing and probably more but I forget. Now while Santa Murete is often celebrated by those who are lgbtq, in sex work, or just had or have/had struggled throughout their life. Valeria might have it because it’s become some what of a symbol among cartels. Valeria has two Santa muerte tattoo’s, both of them have the initials KW on them, but I couldn’t find anything relating to that, so I’m assuming its an initial for name? Valeria also has a rose tattoo, with shackle on it, now, this is actually a popular tattoo among Russian prisoners. It represents someone who was either incarcerated before 18 and can symbolize rising up from oppressive forces or people. The general consensus I could find about the tattoo that it means to basically rise above oppression. She has a snake tattoo with a dagger stabbing it which can represent triumph, bravery, and over coming demons, or obstacles. She also has two scorpion tattoos, now scorpion’s can symbolize many things. In general they are a symbol of strength. Within Mexican and Cuban gangs and cartels, in particular, the tattoo indicates the wearer is a contract killer or enforcer. Valeria tattoo themes surround, overall strengthen, overcoming oppression or obstacles she has faced in her life. She most likely wears the Santa muerte tattoo as a form of worship in a way, but because she has initials combined with it, she might be of done in a memory of someone. Anyways she looks hot.
Alchol, she loves and hates it. Coming from a Hispanic household, and family in general, I have never met a Hispanic who doesn’t drink, unless they’re alcoholics and in recovery. So she probably drinks, but never to the point where she’s drunk. She likes really anything, but rarely drinks hard liquor though. Beer and wine she likes. Oddly loves cheap wine, and liquor but can’t stand cheap beer. She prefers Modelo’s, reminds her of how her dad would let her sip or try a little, when she was a teenager.

She has a particular mixed feelings towards white Americans, she knows not all of them believe in the whole build a wall and all Mexicans are criminals, thing, but.. she just can’t help but just feel kind of… annoyed? Not saying she wouldn’t have a white partner, but she definitely would want to know your views for sure.
Her opinions on cartels before she became who she was a grey area. Cartels to her are honestly just another way of making money. She knows how many workers are exploited in Mexico and the US, and for what? To take home maybe 200 dollars, if that, after a ten hour work day? To her drugs are honestly a long term business. For centuries, people have used drugs, of some sort. It makes money, and a lot of it. Now most cartels usually give back to the community, whether its simply a tactic or because they genuinely want to give back, they help the community. Now that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it’s negatives, or consequences, and domino effect. So it was a mixed bag for Valeria, but she believed, a win is win.
Not everyone likes the cartel and she doesn’t blame them, she’s not the type to kill those who speak ill about her. Now wether you cause problems or not is different.

Valeria is tough, she can take a hit, she can fight. She was in the military, and a cartel boss, she’s seen something’s, and been through something’s. But she swears to god, nothing gives her more trauma or anxiety than those bounce houses. She was fighting for her life at family gatherings and all the parents did were laugh it off. This is just for some reason a universal experience for Hispanic and Latino children, I literally can not tell you why.

She’s honestly wouldn’t want her child involved or even connected to the cartel so she’d probably leave if you guys decided to have children. Also, its a no to pregnancy for her.
She won’t admit it, but she has very low standards when it comes to women. She just likes women. I think she does prefer chubby girls though, and I’m not saying like oh you have a little tummy, no she like big women, she can’t explain it, she just likes ya’ll. But that doesn’t mean she’s not attracted to other body types, she loves all women bodies, she kind of has this artist and muse thing when she sees women’s bodies.

Doughnuts Under A Crescent Moon by Shio Usui - I avoided this one for a while because it *does* have a treacly name, and it's turned out to have a very lesbi-ace approach, which I can't imagine will help its reputation much (yes I've seen the tumblr post). But it's also a really beautifully written examination of the process of coming out to yourself as an adult (albeit a young one), and both the core relationship and the secondary characters are very well-written. I think I'm only missing the last volume, and I'm looking forward to completing the story.
To Try:
Asumi-chan is Interested in Lesbian Brothels! by Kuro Itsuki - A girl hears her first crush is working at a local brothel and resolves to visit them all until she finds her. Sounds like sudsy fun and I’m interested to see what the erotic sensibility will be since my other encounter with lesbian sex workers in Japan is in My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. Which on the one hand has one of the most profound meditations on sex I’ve read and on the other hand has a ~very different sensibility~.
Our Teachers Are Dating! by Pikachi Ohi - I mean, to be honest I'm always going to at least consider a series that's about adults. But this one has good reviews for the main couple's chemistry, and apparently they are loved and supported by their community, which I enjoy in any romance but especially in a queer one. Plus apparently it gets spicy! 👀
My Androgynous Boyfriend by Tamekou - A beautiful kept boyfriend and his hardworking girlfriend. I like my men pretty and my het/het-passing relationships nontraditional. Will definitely at least try the first volume.
On The Fence:
Love Me For Who I Am by Kata Konayama - Lonely nonbinary teen finds community and maybe love at a nontraditional maid cafe. Honestly the blurb sounds like something I'd adore, but considering the main character is in tears on the cover of volume 2 I'm afraid of it turning out to be melodrama farming rather than a good story.
Goodbye, My Rose Garden by Pepperco - Reading between the lines of the blurb, a Japanese novelist ends up broke in Victorian England and takes a job as a maid, only for her new [probably lesbian] mistress to ask her to kill her. Instead, they kindle a relationship. I mean... sounds lugubrious. But reviews are actually good. I'll think about it.
Ditch:
Days of Love At Seagull Villa by Kodama Naoko - I want to like Kodama's writing (I've also read her one-shot, I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up!) because her premises are often engaging. But her pacing is usually incoherent and she tends to over-rely on boob jokes and under-develop her emotional arcs. It's probably unfair to tap out of a series for being under-developed at Volume 1, but I just don't see improvement from the one-shot and there are better ways to spend my money.

Thoughts on e8-e10 of The Terror
(The final entry in my posting saga)
I went in expecting expecting literally everyone to die on this "doomed" expedition. So in that sense, Crozier and Silna surviving meant that things weren't as bad as they could have been. But also... holy shit, Jopson's death was heartbreaking. The fact that he didn't know what happened to Crozier and so he thought he'd been abandoned by his captain was so incredibly tragic. And undeserved! Like I'd argue that Jopson probably dies in a worse way than basically anyone else in the series (maaaaybe not Sir John, but Sir John also got some karmic retribution for disrespecting Silna's dad and for putting everyone's lives at risk). So WHY did Johnson have to die alone, in pain, and thinking he'd been left behind by the man he cared about most? I am so upset by this.
Thoughts on some other deaths:
Goodsir's was not as sad for me when it happened—he at least got to kind of choose how it happened, and it seemed like he'd at least accomplish saving Crozier. Ultimately it seemed like it didn't do that much though, and Silna's reaction to seeing his body was also heartbreaking.
Fitzjames's was sad, but in a more heartwarming way? At least he got to die with someone he cared about next to him. I definitely understand people shipping Crozier/Fitzjames now.
Gibson's death I think I had spoiled a while ago, so my main takeaway was that it was less gay than I expected. Like, it was still reasonably gay, but I expected it to be very gay. The thing that gets me is that I'm not sure whether or not Hickey did it out of love (Goodsir had just explained to Gibson that he was going to die from illness eventually but that he would suffer PAINFULLY first) or pragmatism, because Hickey wasn't in the tent when Goodsir gave the diagnosis. Did he overhear it and want to keep Gibson from suffering? Or was it actually just that Goodsir said that Gibson couldn't haul? Characters having already canonically fucked does NOT stop me from wanting to analyze the homoeroticism of their subsequent scenes.
I feel like the Crozier/Fitzjames death scene and the Hickey/Gibson one were explicit parallels of each other, given that Crozier also mercy killed Fitzjames (massaging the poison down his throat) and Fitzjames tried to get Crozier to eat him. TBH I kind of feel like Crozier should have indeed done so—given that Team Hickey ended up finding Fitzjames's body anyway, it's likely that he got eaten regardless. Surely one wouldn't want other men to be the ones to eat their boyfriend, right? (Relatedly, Fitzjames saying "Use my body!" also sent my mind in directions away from the seriousness of the scene.)
Speaking of scenes where someone sadly and homoerotically holds their BF, the Bridgens/Peglar stuff was also sad and sweet. Probably if I rewatch the series and actually pay attention to them more earlier, it would be even more so.
Now I'm sad about Jopson's death again because he was all alone and abandoned. :'(
Also it's sad that Little died without ever being able to tell Crozier that he TRIED to rescue him. I initially thought that Crozier legitly wanted the men to go south, so the fact that he'd been misleading Team Hickey and had actually been counting on Little to rescue him was tragic.
Blanky’s death seemed like the happiest—he got to finally discover the Northwest Passage, while wearing his WTF fork outfit. Good for him, that badass deserved something cool.
My friend that I was watching with hates Hickey now and so was happy when he died. I was fully expecting Hickey's crazy murder schemes to come up at some point and so my opinion on Hickey didn't change that much. I do think it would have felt weird for the plot to *not* have Hickey die though.
Speaking of Hickey, some obligatory Hickeyposting:
I love how he somehow manages to be comic relief in addition to being the primary villain. I laughed my ass off at the reveal that he murdered a guy and stole his identity completely unnecessarily, out of a mistaken impression he'd get to summer in the Caribbean. Also the scene where he started singing while all of his men were panicking about the Tuunbaq was black comedy hilarious.
Way before this episode, I saw some shots of him with a noose around his neck. I assumed I'd been spoiled for his death scene. Then I saw those shots tagged as being from e8, and I figured that I probably hadn't been. I was correct! (Later I got spoiled on the real death.)
Crazy as he is, I feel like he had to have been like, "Wow, um, okay," when Crozier's approach to cannibalism was to cut off and eat Goodsir's raw, calloused, foot skin.
I didn't initially appreciate how TINY he is. There was a scene where he was standing in between Gibson and someone else and he was just soooo much shorter than both of them. So brave of the creators to canonically make him a top.
I expected him to kill more people. I think Gibson might have even been the only person he *directly* murdered in these three episodes? He definitely caused quite a lot of trouble though.
I think I got trolled into thinking that the Tunbaaq would die from choking on Hickey's evil evil soul, rather than choking on a literal chain. Whoops.
I was surprised that Hickey didn't bring up more audience-compelling points during his hanging speech. Or maybe I was surprised that Crozier was as straightforwardly good as he turned out to be? I think it might've been cool if Hickey had been able to call out Crozier on real flaws, rather than mistakenly interpreting his plan to resign and lead a team south as something selfish.

I'm a boring basic bitch, so who would you ship with Jaune?
Full disclosure, I think Jaune is bi (or at least bicurious) and hasn't quite figured it out yet. With that in mind...
Arkos is my number one Jaune ship, no contest. It's a classic, and never mind that Pyrrha was done dirty.
I also really like Guard Dogs, Jaune and Marrow's dynamic throughout the Atlas arc was cute and funny and I enjoyed their interactions. The only problem is that they're both subs, so determining whose penis opens up to accept the other one's penis can be difficult at times.
I'm actually quite partial to Dragonslayer as of Volume 8, I wasn't really a fan of this ship beyond aesthetic appreciation at first but their scenes in Volume 8 really convinced me that these two have a genuine bond. Yang's been remarkably supportive of Jaune ever since, like, Volume 2, and I think their personalities are pretty compatible. Can't say their chemistry in canon is explicitly romantic, given Yang's focus on Blake, but they obviously care for each other and I think a writer could build on that in a very believable way. Also, I'm a huge proponent of bi Yang, let her have a hot boyfriend and a hot girlfriend.
I know some people don't like the actual ship name, mostly because it carries connotations of Jaune taming/owning/conquering Yang, and there are definitely people who really buy into that and portray the relationship (and Jaune's relationship with other girls, for that matter) in really gross ways, but I actually think it's funny in an ironic way because anyone with a functioning brain cell who's spent five seconds thinking about their established characterization knows that Yang would run Jaune over like a locomotive. If anyone's getting conquered, it's our resident himbo.
Also, if you capitalize the wrong (right) letter, the ship name turns into a sex joke, which is important to me because I have the mental and emotional maturity of a middle schooler.
White Knight was arguably my least favorite Jaune ship early on, and Beacon-era White Knight just does not do it for me, but I'm actually coming around on Atlas-era White Knight. Part of it is a "pair the spares" thing that comes from the emphasis on Bumbleby and the way it parallels Renora in the Atlas Volumes, as well as the hints of Nuts and Dolts we get in that same Kingdom, but also I feel like Weiss and especially Jaune are a lot more emotionally mature now. Jaune had a lot of stuff to work through, what with the whole toxic masculinity and not really knowing how to talk to girls thing, but he's come around and they feel like people who actually trust and like each other now as opposed to people who happen to be in the same friend group.
Martial Arcs (I think this is the name for Jaune x Ren?) is also very nice, even if I don't particularly like splitting up Ren and Nora. They're clearly very close, we get some nice angst and conflict in Volume 8, and they have a deep heart-to-heart discussion while Ren is naked and wrapped in a towel, thus making it impossible for me to view any of their interactions as anything other than homoerotic. Adding Nora into the mix is also a nice option, she deserves two boyfriends who will love her and each other.
Jaune x Neptune is inherently funny to me because I think having the two characters voiced by the main writers kiss would be funny and would probably make a lot of people mad for a lot of different reasons.
Not a big Lancaster fan, Jaune and Ruby have always just felt like friends to me. I like their relationship in a platonic sense but they just do not seem to have chemistry to me.
Knightshade is another one I'm not particularly partial to, given that Jaune and Blake have so little interaction in canon, to the point where seeing Blake hug Jaune when they reunited in Volume 6 genuinely shocked me because they've never seemed like anything other than people who happen to run in the same circles. I can't even test whether they have chemistry of any kind together because that hug was genuinely the first time I could remember them directly interacting, and by that point CRWBY is clearly gearing up to make Bumbleby canon. Like, they seem compatible, based on their personalities, but who the hell even knows because the writers seem to have an aversion to letting Blake just interact with her friends unless they're part of her specific plotline or her love interest of the day. No, I'm not still upset that it took us 8 Volumes for her to get a meaningful conversation with Ruby, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Still think the Gigachad Jaune shit does a disservice to his character.

Hiii, what's your perception of Tom and Greg's relationship? Is it true love underneath it all? Lust? Power? All of that or none? I'm in love with your succession fic, it's everything a succession fic should be. You manage to capture the character's voices and inner worlds so well... I'd just like to know what do you get from Tom and Greg, I love their dynamic.

short version: I think it could be true love if either of them had access to their souls.
As it IS. We can't know. They've divested themselves of all human warmth and connection in exchange for money and power. Any sincerity is not only difficult to even access, but dangerous to their standing to express.
Up to the finale, I think their relationship is mutual obsession. They're the outsiders on the inside, so they'll always have a little more in common with each other than The Family or the Old Guard. They're actually more comfortable with each other than anyone else (the bar is low), and who has the power in any given scene is deliciously difficult to untangle.
It's loving because they're both starved for affection, and genuinely kinda like each other. It's violent because affection between male friends is forbidden in the strange exotic culture of corporate New York. And then it's homoerotic because Tom is doing his best to imitate the boundary crossing, sexually violent language of the Roys, but is simply bad at it. And then consider that Greg is taking his cues on banter from Tom. Truly learning from the worst. You end up with shit like "disgusting brothers," and recounting sexual exploits in uncomfortable detail three inches from your platonic bro's face.
And then, you throw in a pinch of genuine attraction, and the verdict is love, your honor! Oh wait. no. sorry. I read that wrong. The verdict is repression, actually. Sorry. It's repression. They're both on such shaky ground in their corporate climb, that even if they could admit to themselves that they might have one (1) feeling, it would not be in their best interest to express that. So we get all... whatever is going on over there instead.
I gave this line to Shiv's internal monologue in my fic but: it's like jazz. It's about all the sex they're not having.
At least. That's how it is before the finale. Finale, I think, changes everything. Tom's pretty securely in the chair, and he's literally objectified and declared ownership over Greg (I did not find the sticker romantic. Loved it, but it made me sad for both of them but I digress). So if he wanted to, he could probably bang his assistant without causing too much trouble for himself. They'll both think they're manipulating the other, and any emotion (if it's there), is going to have to stay repressed for safety.
Now, I've heard people say that tomgreg is cringe. And I would agree. But if "cringe comedy" implies the existence of "cringe tragedy," then that's Succession, babe!
And if anything were to happen between Tom and Greg, the characters within their own universe would also find it incredibly cringe, and that is just hilarious to me. Cringing, dying, can't stop being obsessed with each other.
