rue is, i think, in love with the idea of love.

they set a wager. the lords of the wing will find true love in this romantic, ephemeral bloom, if they only seek it. they can win it, as though it’s a game.

they long to abolish the courts. their own court has never held any love for them - why would any other court be different? a court stifles, a court smothers, a court suffocates love. the courts must be abolished, so that love can bloom. true love, love that is unfettered by politics, or station, or duty.

they are the architect of the bloom. the hunt, the heart. the dance. the potions. they will pour love into a cup and the guests will drink their fill. fae from across the realms will fall in beautiful, perfect love at rue’s hand.

they have become the arbiter of love. when an engagement between a cruel prince and a wild goblin is set, what else can they do but judge it unfit? it was not love, it was not true.

they share a moment in a forest with a venerated captain. he is tall, as they are. he is clawed, as they are. he is a beast, as they are, and so beautiful for it. they fall fast, and hard, and heavy. and perhaps it is only the nature of queerness, of a life lived behind a mask, yearning for the faintest spark, that causes them to love so fast.

or perhaps they did not truly fall in love with hob at all. for they did not see him.

they fell in love with a reflection of themself.

except, of course, that hob is not a reflection of rue. hob is his own person, and like any real person, he cannot live up to an idea. and while rue is on a wonderful journey of revelation and self acceptance, it is baffling to them that someone else’s love does not always mirror their own.

rue, in an act of bravery and vulnerability and hope, removed their mask. and they long so very much to remove hob’s - but he has never worn a mask. he has always been exactly as he is - a soldier, devoted and dutiful. an outsider, used and abused by his court. rue’s true form was hidden by their court, while hob’s otherness has always been mercilessly exposed.

rue loves hob for the idea of who he could be, if he could simply unmask as they did. but hob needs, just as rue does, to be loved for who he is.

okay so i have gained a new species of spore for my collective brainrot and i have found the perfect selling pitch to drag everyone i care about down with me. if you know the show this is hilarious. if you haven't watched it pay attention:

the show's called leverage. you know how there's those crime serials that aren't good at all but we've all watched a little too much of at least one of them even though they are blatant copaganda which is morally terrible? take your favorite one of those, but remover the copaganda. all the characters are criminals but their only victim is capitalism. every cop in the show is stupid at best and blatantly corrupt to a disgusting level most of the time. there is just as much genuine and intelligent social commentary as this premise demands.

i sense i already have you hooked. i can make this better. stick with me for a minute on this: the character dynamic is a muppet movie but also the Scooby gang

stick with me here!

You have Parker, who fit into the Scooby gang as Scooby and would be played by Gonzo. her crime thing is that she is a cat burglar and she is very good at it. her skill with it is borderline slapstick (hence Scooby) and she is very autistic coded and misunderstood (hence Gonzo)

You've got Eliot, who is the Shaggy and is played by Sam Eagle. He is the brute force of the team and he wants you to think he is all serious and grimdark. but he loves making the employees and victims of their capitalist targets aware of unions and he is a big himbo. i say he is shaggy because he plays Parker's straight man, he has the second most cartoonlike abilities, and he has a passion for cooking

Hardison is Velma as played by Kermit. he is a geeky hacker with a passion for orange soda and he is the heart of the team. he gets overlooked as leader even though he is the driving force of everything they do. like Velma. he also has that trademark Kermit brand of slapstick and deadpanned humor in balance.

Sophie is Daphne as played by miss piggy. she is basically the world's best grifter, she usually the front man interacting with the target the most. she has that crazy streak and the self defense capacity that miss piggy and Daphne (when she's done right) both have. she also has the confidence and style.

Nate is Fred and he is the human character. Fred has "let's split up gang" and Nate has "then we have to steal *fill in the blank with something comedically unfit to finish the sentence*" Fred and Nate are both flat characters with the main trait "i think I'm the leader but my smart friend does all the work" and the main interest of "trapping and screwing over capitalists" he mainly gets to call himself the leader because he's the idea guy and he has an apartment. his role in the muppet analogy is the peak of my pitch if you're still here. because while this is definitely not the Christmas Carol, Nate is the human character because he is Ebenezer Scrooge if instead of being a capitalist, Scrooge was an alcoholic and instead of character growth he was just steadily losing his mind. his moral compass and general intelligence are on a roulette wheel that is spun at random intervals lasting from seconds to the occasional few hours. also he and Sophie have divorced parents of grown children syndrome and the other three are said children. in vibes, of course, they aren't actually related.

if anyone stayed with me through all of that you should seriously watch it. even if i sound like i pulled this all out of my ass. it's so good.

it's an actively anticapitalist, copaganda free crime show where you get to see fun characters beat up every thing bad in society and fuck it all over. it balances fun comedy and wild characters with serious topics and moments in a way that is very natural and genuine. it also has one of my favorite autistic coded characters, a positive and healthy relationship that develops in a way that feels natural to the characters (as well as a rockier one if you're into drama) and it is in the midst of what looks to be an actually well handled revival series with the original cast. i haven't caught up yet but I'm so excited for it. the original had 5 seasons and the revival is waiting to be renewed for season 3.

please go watch leverage. it's so good and it deserves more fans. also i want more fic and that next season

To ignorant fucking doctors/psychiatrist /therapist:

thanks for:

- Assuming/insinuating that I am semiverbal and slowly losing whatever ability to have to speak from pain ON PURPOSE.

-Assuming that I am over reacting by using a mobility aid- because I'm in so much pain. (I can barely fucking stand let alone walk at all. I am shaking so severely that it hurts to even use a Cane )

-Assuming after displaying obvious traits of autism, and being disabled mentally to the point it not only impedes my speech but my ability to socialize and work- that I was not only delusional from my BPD but also a hypochondriac and liar looking for attention. And seemingly thinking I am less likely to be autistic because I'm AFAB and got good grades.

-Assuming when I was literally sobbing from migraines since age 6 that I was a hypochondriac (later diagnosed with chronic tension migraines)

-THANK YOU for not realizing that ptsd and c-ptsd was a actual diagnosis and asked me to define the diagnosis and list its symptoms. (Literally asked me: "What is post traumatic stress disorder?" Apparently he never even heard of it despite being a psychiatrist)

-Assuming I've gone to inpatient so many times because he assumed I "refused to take any medications in the past 3 years." (Which is a actual blatant lie )

-saying I can not use my aac despite me having mentioned my speech loss episodes.

-dismissing all my experiences and thoughts on my own mental health as delusions because at the time I had a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

-telling me it was my fault I was being verbally and mentally abused because I was "ungrateful despite living under her [the abusive family member] roof."

This all actually happened!!

I understand doctors are human and not perfect but at bare minimum actually listen.

So to all the medical professionals: stop dismissing patients, assuming things about them and actually listen.

And to anyone who has experienced this or similar situations I'm sorry.

(Just to clarify for those who can not easily read tone - the thank you is heavily sarcastic in this post. I am quite frustrated.)

I’ve been on TikTok a lot because my FYP has been infiltrated by SPN and most people on there think he has the mental mind of a 3 y/o or a baby. How is this possible to think with his storylines? It doesn’t make sense to me. I wasn’t in the fandom, just an avid show watcher, and I saw him similar to Amara and how she’s an adult that grew up fast except he was just born grown but naive because the world is complex. So how do people get to him having a baby mind? It feels ableist to me but I can’t figure out how to articulate why (like when someone has developmental disabilities and someone says, “They have the mind of a _y/o,” when that person’s needs/skills/etc are more complex) and I was wondering if you could shine some light on why you think this happens. I don’t think people understand why other people have uncomfortable feelings surrounding baby/toddler/kid!Jack but I can’t remove it from accidental ableism. I’ve tried talking to people about it on TikTok but they either double down or say that it’s my opinion. However, I don’t feel like canon supports theirs. Thank you. genuinely I don’t know, and I ask myself that every single time I go through spn tiktok lmao. the best I can figure is, for one, TikTok is the app where media literacy and nuance go to die like dogs. there’s no arguing with anybody there unless you get lucky (source: I’ve argued).

two, I think genuinely it comes from the over-saturation of baby!jack content in the fandom, both in and out of tumblr, and the extremely minimal amount of content where he’s actually treated with nuance and complexity. like, it exists, but only in very small circles that the majority of the fandom clearly ignores. from what I’ve seen most of spn-tok is focused on TFW or Dean or Destiel and don’t generally care about Jack that much, so it kinda makes sense that they’d just run with the most prevalent idea of jack and not really think about it in the long run, or when they watch the show.

a lot of the arguments I’ve seen literally boil down to “he wears Velcro sneakers” and “he doesn’t know [insert thing]” or just his general social awkwardness/unawareness (which Cas displayed all the time in the early seasons but never got outright infantilized for). like look at this:

and there’s millions more comments like this, unfortunately. I don’t mean to speak for everyone, but at least for me, the body language and specific mannerisms Alex put into his portrayal of Jack is what resonated the most as an autistic thing, naïveté and poor social skills aside of course. Like, he fidgets/stims constantly—

and none of this is scripted for him to do, either! Alex just decided it worked, and he was right!!

—and to see these very blatant autistic traits be reduced down to “portrayal of a child/toddler” is downright sickening, especially when plenty of other autistic fans have pointed it out and expressed to Alex that they relate to Jack and even asked if he had done it on purpose because it was so well done.

what I’m personally confused on is how many people will double down on jack being a child like it’s driftwood in the ocean. like, going back to my argument, I gave the other person multiple points in the show that make it obvious jack is intended to be an adult. Harper, the beer, any of the trauma he’s endured; the works. and all they had to say to that was “you do you I guess.” and it’s like what do you mean, ‘you do you’? I’m giving you actual examples that happen in the show, and I’m asking you to think ‘hey, maybe if jack flirted with a girl and talked nonstop about what it’s like to fall in love and have sex for an entire episode and had his dad offer to go to a dive bar for bucket-list hookups in the episode after, maybe he isn’t a child.’

but again, this is TikTok, so asking for any kind of self examination is asking for too much.

it just strikes me as odd. it’s odd and confusing and horribly frustrating that people are dying on this hill like it’s some kind of civic duty. like, why does it matter to you so much to see Jack as a child? why is it so important for you to think of him that way, that you just ignore canon evidence and autistic voices to make yourself feel right? what was even weirder was they were autistic themselves, and said they wouldn’t dream of infantilizing him, but here we are. their reasoning was “he’s literally 3 by the end of the show,” and that was it. And of course they weren’t wrong, but if you look at every time Jack or anyone else acknowledges his age:

D: “how old do you think you are?”

J: “3 days, 17 hours and 42 minutes”

Dean shrugs and lets him drink beer.

M: “You should be six months old.”

J: “I am…sort of.”

Mary shrugs and treats Jack like a teenager from there on out

M: “Do you ever hang out? I mean, with kids your own age?”

J: “Well, I’m two…enty. I’m twenty…two. I’m twenty-two.”

While the show acknowledges Jack’s actual age, it’s arguably on the same level of acknowledgment of Cas being literally older than time, because what people strangely fail to remember is that Jack is not completely human and doesn’t have the natural aging or developmental process that humans do. He’s three in the same way Vision is three, and Vision is already married with children. Beyond that, there are plenty of times when Jack is referred to as a teenager or treated like one, like Dean’s “he’s a millennial” joke in Last Holiday (wrongly termed but the intent is still there). Hell, even in the scripts they’ll directly say things like:

“Jack is spiraling out, a teenage powder keg,” (13x06 Tombstone, deleted writer’s draft)

“Kelly can’t help but smile, so impressed by the man he’s become, but not about to let him out of her sight,” (14x08 Byzantium, prod. draft)

that make it pretty clear Jack is functionally an adult despite his unnatural age, just like Cas or Amara or even Emma (also the added bonus that Jack explicitly hates being called a child or treated like one, but people literally reacted to that like “oh silly baby wants to be in charge like a grownup” so, like, I don’t even know what to do with that) (and banking off of that, every other time Jack is explicitly put into an adult situation, like flirting with Harper and literally asking Dean how to have sex, sooo many notes on that gif set were the same parroted “nooo baby boy don’t corrupt your innocent mind!! dean is such a bad influence 😂😂😂😂”, so the obtuseness is very intentional). I try not to be accusatory when I talk about the way Jack is treated in the fandom, as a general for online discussion and because I know it’s largely unintentional, but I really do think Destiel (and Sastiel) have some hand in it.

If you look at the majority of Baby!Jack content, it all centers around how domestic either ship is with baby!jack, how good Dean is with kids (baby jack) and how much of a sweet older sister Claire would be, etc. It’s all for the sake of domesticity. It’s the white picket fence family dream that canon TFW2.0 doesn’t really quite have. It’s to make Dean and Cas and Sam and Cas and Claire and Rowena and whoever else, a softer version of themselves. It’s never actually about Jack. He’s just the cannon fodder; the prop; the dress setting; the accessory. He’s there to make everyone else look better and to fuel them forward. No matter how much people want to argue that it’s “giving Jack the childhood he should’ve had,” we both know it’s not actually about him, because canon coming in with the steel chair again: Jack literally chose to be an adult. He hates being considered a child and has never expressed anything more than wanting to be a regular teenager. And like I said, people on spn-tok are naturally Destiel centered, so it’s honestly not very surprising that they just can’t let go of this content cow because it’s just too cute and wholesome and precious of course, despite it being rampant ableism and just generally annoying to people who actually do care about Jack in a deeper sense. Gag me. So maybe that explains the doubling down, but then what gets even more confusing to me is, like, you can have a domestic family AU that doesn’t rely on erasing a character to fit a specific image. You can have a domestic family AU without being ableist about it. You don’t have to do any of the things you keep consistently doing. You even fucking already it in the show! Canon TFW2.0 is dysfunctional on various levels, but so was TFW, and so were just Sam and Dean. It’s simply their dynamic, and it’s what adds to their family bond being what it is to begin with. Nothing you’re doing is something you need to.

I wanna stop before this gets longer than it has to be, but for one final thought I think the general lack of care for autistic people in any space is part of it, too. It’s why half of our representation is painfully inaccurate or egregiously offensive; it’s why fandoms of media with autistic/autistic-coded characters almost always rampantly infantilize them (cough cough SheRa). And like with Alex’s mannerism choices, it’s the distinct yet subconscious connection between autistic behaviors and childlike behaviors, because autistic people are so largely treated as incapable innocent children and cannon fodder for their autism warrior parents; both of which reflect like direct sunlight in Baby!Jack tropes. And it’s why people just don’t care enough to do anything about it, to heed any criticisms about the harm they’re doing, because to them it’s not harmful. It’s not a problem that’s doing any perceivably “real” damage because they haven’t been personally hurt by it (except when it comes to unfair Dean criticism or Sam or Cas criticism, because that’s clearly more important than ableist rhetoric and representation erasure), and probably because they already hold those views to autistic people in the real world.

The world at large does not care for autistic people, or disabled people in general. Nothing that hurts us is considered anything serious. Nothing that matters to us is considered valuable or worth respecting. And because of that, we already struggle in the real world day by day, so we turn to online spaces for connection and sharing our interests safely. We turn here for community, only to be met with the same indifference and rejection as the real world, because the same people we’re trying to avoid are here too, and then we have nowhere else.

**im probably going to make this a separate post but I also want to talk about the weird cognitive dissonance that the fandom has with babyjack and how it’s pretty much considered “acceptable infantilization,” and how so many people in the fandom have said they want more complex jack but still engage with content that actively erases Jack’s complexity and relies on that erasure to make him what he is).

These past days I have been having a hard time with my autism and the fact I can't really understand when someone is joking/teasing (unless its stated or blatant obvious) and I also have the headcanon that douma would be the type of boyfriend who loves to tease his partner (Like calling them food and other things that are not 'ideal') so can I request douma discovering his partner is Autistic and their self esteem is now very low because they cant really understand that type of interaction?

"So, my little appetiser," Douma began, his voice dripping with a honeyed charm that belied the darkness within. "I've noticed something peculiar about you lately. Something that adds a certain… flavor to our interactions."

His partner glanced up, meeting Douma's intense gaze, their expression a mix of curiosity and trepidation. "What do you mean?" they asked, a hint of vulnerability in their voice.

Douma leaned forward, his grin widening. "You, my dear, are a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. An enigma I find increasingly fascinating."

Their brow furrowed in confusion. "I'm not sure I follow, Douma-dono."

"I observe that my petite vessel of blood is wandering far afield within the labyrinth of their thoughts," Douma remarked with a touch of jest, a subtle mockery threaded through his words.

His partner, catching the undertone, furrowed their brow slightly, tilting their head in a manner both curious and perplexed, as if attempting to decipher Douma's banter. 'I don't like when you call me that, Douma-dono..."

He chuckled, the sound sending shivers down their spine. Today my teasing seems to affect you in a unique way."

Their eyes widened as the realization dawned on them. "You mean…" they hesitated, choosing their words carefully, "you've noticed that I don't always get your jokes or teasing, right?"

Douma's laughter echoed through the room, a haunting melody that danced on the edge of malevolence. "Precisely, my dear. And I must admit, it only makes me more intrigued."

Their shoulders slumped, a mixture of relief and apprehension settling over them. "I'll tell you. Maybe you'll be able to understand me a little better... I'm autistic..." they admitted, their voice barely above a whisper. "I struggle with understanding when someone is joking or being sarcastic unless it's explicitly stated."

The demon's rainbow eyes glinted with a newfound understanding, yet the mischievous glimmer remained. "Ah, fascinating indeed! A unique trait, like a rare spice in the grand feast! Oh, my, my!"

Their gaze dropped again, the weight of their perceived inadequacy pressing down on them. "It's just frustrating, Douma-dono. I feel like I'm missing out on something, like I'm not fully participating in our exchanges."

Douma leaned back, his expression softening ever so slightly. "My dear, your uniqueness is not a flaw to be fixed. It's a facet that adds depth to the masterpiece of who you are. And as for your struggles, well, consider it a challenge. A challenge I'm more than willing to navigate with you."

Rising languidly from his reclined position, Douma navigated the room with a feline grace, his every movement echoing a predator's unhurried approach. Silently, he knelt beside his partner.

The demon's long, cold fingertips delicately traced the contours of his partner's cheek, an unexpected tenderness emanating from his touch. His silver locks cascaded around his face as he regarded them with a grin that held a strange blend of mischief and genuine affection. "I find myself quite taken with you, dear Y/N," Douma murmured, his voice a low, melodic hum. The words carried a weight of sincerity that defied his typically sadistic demeanor. "Those monikers I so casually tossed your way — they are not wielded in dismissal. Quite the contrary, right? After all, partners deserve a unique rapport, wouldn't you agree?" His grin widened, revealing a glimpse of sharp teeth that hinted at the duality of his nature.

Their breath caught in their throat as Douma's frigid fingertips traced the delicate curves of their cheek. The unexpected tenderness in his touch stirred a whirlwind of conflicting emotions within them. A hesitant smile played on their lips as they met Douma's intense gaze. "I... I appreciate that, Douma," they responded. "My self-esteem falters slightly, a consequence of my inherent nature and the way I perceive myself, you know..."

Douma's laughter resonated, a surprisingly gentle melody escaping his lips. "Ah, my delectable morsel, that's precisely what captivates me about you," he reassured with a softness in his tone. "You're my personal enigma, and the joy lies in unraveling you, discovering and learning anew each day."

A slow smile spread across their face as they nodded in acknowledgment. "Douma-dono…"

The demon's grin widened, seizing their palm with his chilly hands. Bringing it to his lips, he delicately grazed the back of their hand. "Whenever uncertainty clouds your thoughts, simply ask, and I shall dispel all your doubts," he pledged.

Bestie I think we know why Wyll is underappreciated and lacking content 😭 If that man was palm-color, he’d be a big hit… I’m a WOC (Indigenous proud!!) and to see the ONLY canon* BIPOC in the main lineup being severely ignored by the fandom makes me so angry.

*I inserted ‘canon’ in this phrase since Lae’zel and Karlach have unnatural skin tones, they could be seen as BIPOC coded or headcanon as such (I hc both as Indigenous baddies, but that’s mostly just projection lol), but ultimately, they are not BIPOC and are their own separate classification, and I don’t think the developers/writers really had any intention of writing them with any specific race or nationality in mind since this is in fact a fantasy game and those concepts aren’t always translated into media on purpose.

The blatant racism in this game makes me so viscerally angry I start shaking. The rewrite of Wyll to make him less "aggressive" into man-who-can-do-no-wrong because people saw he was black and perceived it as aggression pisses me off. Not to mention he has the least content of everyone, rewrite or no. They were too scared to give him any sense of anger or anything because of racist EA players, instead of saying hey y'all are racist because he's black and this is the story we intend to tell.

Similar thing with Gale and being blatantly ableist in their treatment of him. He's neurodivergent (mostly autistic) coded, and the studio openly joins in with an ableist community to shit on him for BLATANTLY ND TRAITS.

I love the game and I haven't even played it yet, but I am so so so tired of the blatant mistreatment of their characters because they keep caving to fan "complaints". Wyll needs more love ESPECIALLY as the only BIPOC companion and I will eat elephant shit for this to happen.

Been looking through your blog for a while and as someone who likes Ingo and Emmet but feels alienated from the main fandom for multiple reasons, it's pretty refreshing to see someone who points out the ableism that nobody else wants to acknowledge.

Like, obviously alternate takes on characters exist and there's nothing WRONG with that if done respectfully, but the blatant disregard for their canon personalities in favor of making Ingo a "pathetic little meow meow" or whatever the current phrase is at all times and making Emmet someone dangerous or scary isn't only tiring, it's harmful to people who see themselves in them. (I get wanting to explore the angst around the separation and it can make for good stories, but come on.)

It's also another signifier of how ableism towards real people gets ignored in fandom spaces. The mod of a Submas blog I used to follow regularly got death threats for "faking" their brain damage and personality disorders, which they were not. There was an eating disorder-related harassment campaign that went around. One user I know of deleted their entire internet existence because of being called slurs all the time.

I'm pretty lucky to have carved out a tiny corner with a select few friends who also take issue with this stuff, or honestly I'd just stop talking about the twins altogether. The fic and art isn't enough of an incentive for me to wade through this shit.

Thank you so, so much for this, anon. You have no idea what this means to me.

Ingo and Emmet are more like me than any other characters on the planet, and I'm often left wondering if those portions of the fandom that depict them that way would see me that way, too. I've actually become deeply self-conscious of how I exist in the world - after a period of near-complete self-acceptance because of the two of them. The way a large enough portion of the fandom has treated them has made me really...well, it reminds me a lot of how people reacted to me when I was younger, and not in a good way. I grew up being bullied and socially ostracized because I was an undiagnosed autistic kid (diagnosed at age 20 in 2009), and the reasons people rejected me were the same traits that a lot of these people use to infantilize or depict Submas as "scary" (especially Emmet, oh my God).

All fandoms have a lot of casual ableism in them, because fandom has shifted from being a subculture/counterculture to mainstream culture and therefore reflects society as a whole, which can make it so difficult to navigate them if you're disabled. The racism in fandom spaces is rampant, as well, for the same reason. I'm so glad you've got a good group of friends you do stuff with - I do too, and they're the only people I trust to talk to about Ingo and Emmet at all. In general, all the best fandom experiences I've had have been in either tiny fandoms where everyone knew each other or just in small groups of friends, and that's the approach I recommend to everyone going forward - enjoy things, don't just consume them, and share them with people you like!

yoshida taisei and autism

there are many characters within 3e that are frequently posited to be a form of neurodivergent and for obvious reason considering the commentary the series draws upon. but a character i veeeery rarely (bar myself + friends) see included among the likes of itona or okuda or sugaya when discussing autistic headcanons despite it being imo one of the most blatant is yoshida

disclaimer one: i am in no way claiming that yoshida being easily read as autistic was intentional on m*tsui’s part lol. id never give that man the credit for that especially considering his track record of dealing with sensitive subjects

disclaimer two: this is NOT intended to be a diagnostic tool. this is simply me (an autistic guy) discussing my own traits i recognise in yoshida that, along with how much i have studied his character, cause me to have the strong conviction i do regarding headcanoning him as autistic. also u dont actually need to have any in depth reasoning to view a character as such either im just insane and have been meaning to fully write this up for eons

so without further ado!!!

firstly, the absolute most blatant trait of yoshida’s that would attract neurodivergent readings is his passionate interest in motorcycles. but id like to go into the extremely far extent to which his interest goes and how it, as a result, reads very much like a special interest

i have often talked about how i dont believe “interest” is strong enough a word to describe the sheer passion yoshida holds for motorcycles. he is associated with them to the degree that its his most recognisable trait by classmates and those in any way familiar with the series

examples of the extent of immersion in his interest exist within his character profiles. his graduation album profile (trans. @/irraydiance) comments on how “he’ll tackle any problem as long as he can apply the knowledge of motorcycles” and has korosensei tell him that he hopes he’ll be able to express his motorcycle knowledge in “a way everyone understands”. a defining factor of a special interest is how it impacts the way in which one understands and interacts with the world around them, we see things through the context of our special interest. yoshida is explicitly stated to have this apply to him — he can achieve anything, he just needs to be able to view it through his obsession with motorcycles. the “in a way everyone understands” is noteworthy wording, as it easily relates to our realities as autistic people and not being understood by the world, including how our intense special interests are perceived.

additionally in his graduation album profile is his reasoning for dropping down to e class which literally is: he spent too much time with his motorcycle. special interests are characterised by an obsessive fixation that makes it hard to do things that dont involve it — things like studying!!! it’s in this sense they can impair our day to day lives. and korosensei picks up on this, in yoshida’s roll book time profile (trans. @/ansatsu-database) he identifies yoshida as “the embodiment of what one likes one will do well” and tries to entice him into mathematics by calling it “useful when tinkering with bikes” - giving yoshida an incentive to bother with it. his roll book time profile is also where we learn that collecting bike related memorabilia is the main thing he spends his money on, and the “collection” aspect of special interests comes up again in chapter 154 where we see him at home with a little motorcycle figurine on his desk. it is also because of his obsession with bikes and his hobby tinkering with them (also influenced by his parents repair shop) that he, according the graduation album, possesses engineering knowledge beyond that of a university student.

it is our first in series introduction to yoshida’s passion for motorcycles in vision time and the context surrounding this introduction that gives us the best grasp on the sheer extent of this intensity. vision time sees the breaking point of terasaka in the face of yoshida and muramatsu beginning to trust korosensei — the way in which korosensei gains the trust of the boys differs significantly but the core similarity that is important to note here is how he directly appeals to what he knows they care about most at this point. with muramatsu he tutors him and helps him improve his grades, appealing to muramatsu’s extremely strong desire to succeed (a recurring theme in his character) as well as his desire to prove himself

with yoshida, however, korosensei appeals to what he knows from observing and talking to him is most important to him: motorcycles. he appeals exactly to what yoshida strongly reacts to and clings to: he engages with him in his interest. he goes out of his way to make a model of a motorcycle and dress in biker gear and to describe yoshida as excited by it would be an understatement!!! look at this boy stim!!!

korosensei engaging with yoshida in his motorcycle interest is likened to muramatsu improving his grades — something INCREDIBLY significant within the context of 3e/kunugigaoka in general and that effectively demonstrates the intense extent of yoshida’s interest. furthermore, through this appeal by korosensei yoshida exposes himself to the class he had before distanced himself from: he is seen openly stimming and openly laughing, something before unimaginable from him, all because of this act from korosensei, because of motorcycles

terasaka destroying the motorcycle model prompts a reaction from yoshida that again is placed on the same level as terasaka literally throwing muramatsu against a tree, equating the two as inflicting similar damage which is reinforced again in yoshida + muramatsu’s comments towards terasaka later

his special interest in motorcycles also leads him to develop smaller but still seemingly intense interests in other vehicles, the most notably being trains. in the character databook there’s a page on the clubs some members of 3e were in before being sent to e class and yoshida is revealed to have been a member of the railroad research club - specifically, it notes how he’s “especially crazy” for steam locomotives which led him to take a railroad tour out of his own volition. trains are a common interest for autistic people (not for me personally, but i know while it is a “stereotype” it IS true for many) which is why though im sure its entirely coincidental i bring it up because i think its funny how one of the most easily read as autistic characters would be given it

how he connects with itona links to this also. itona holds an interest similar in intensity to yoshida regarding electronics and it’s the core way through which the two bond — sharing these interests with each other and becoming a “tech team” the class can rely on. notably, yoshida’s thought process behind giving itona his first bike ride is the same as what i’ll mention more later: it works for him, it must work for itona, not factoring in the differing contexts.

the second trait of yoshida’s i feel might be the next most obvious is his very prominent sense of “justice” by his own rules of black and white thinking. this is implied offhandedly somewhat in hazama’s databook profile where she and yoshida are stated to be the “most rational” out of the terasaka gang, compared to terasaka, muramatsu and itona. but there are a few instances that explicitly demonstrate this idea

the “rules” yoshida has for himself with his thought process to determine something as angering to him largely center around this idea of “fairness”. to him something is either fair or unfair and there appears little room for nuance — terasaka destroyed the motorcycle, that’s unfair, he gets angry — grip using underhanded tactics against karma is unfair, he gets angry — takaoka’s grudge on nagisa is unfair because nagisa defeated takaoka fairly, he gets angry — karma and nakamura positioning him the way they do in the civil war is deemed “not playing fair”. he never lets what he deems “unfair” go uncommented on. less emotionally focused is when he calls out gakuhou by commenting on how korosensei has played by his rules fair and square, so gakuhou should just give up

additionally, this manifests in yoshida’s reasoning for choosing “kill” during the civil war. while compared to the rest of the terasaka gang his reasoning is much more up to personal interpretation in that he only says one brief thing - that one brief thing has him say how he too thought of ways to save korosensei but, evidently, couldnt find one and so accepted this was the only other option. this line of thinking on yoshida’s part of wanting to save koro leads me to think it wouldnt be a stretch to suggest that his idea of “saving” after he realized it wouldnt work for korosensei fell decidedly upon prioritising saving his friends and classmates by continuing with the assassination and thus avoiding what the fallout for failing to do so would be. it again connects to his fixation on “fairness” and how black and white his thought process can be considered in that he quickly acknowledges that its a one life vs billions of lives situation with seemingly little emotional input. this is true in a fair less “noble” or objectively “just” way in the very first episode regarding his willingness to participate in terasaka’s plan to sacrifice nagisa to kill koro-sensei ergo “save the world” and get a billion yen - we can only speculate given what his role was, but the way yoshida probably justified his involvement at this stage to himself is likely to fall on the same wavelength as what else i have discussed.

connecting to anger, however, is the third point: yoshida is a sensitive guy who is easily overwhelmed by the force of his emotions + struggles to regulate them

yoshida rarely gets openly angry or upset, but when he does he seems to get very overwhelmed by it in how it essentially bursts out of him (much like his joy!). the island arc is an excellent example of this in how he is (understandably) extremely distressed by the prospect of people dying due to the virus (especially muramatsu and hazama which is why theyre positioned in the background of the panel!!!) and it causes him to burst out in an example of overwhelmed panic

notably, he is the only character to have an outburst as big as this displaying the difference in emotional regulation, and doubly notably is how the only other time before this point we had seen yoshida display emotion like this was the motorcycle incident in vision time. i think, from experience lol, that his behavior here and from here on out does resemble the teeterings of a meltdown, that hara (his childhood friend) seems able to soothe him away from for the time being. but he remains extremely notably on edge for the remainders of the arc. which again, would be understandable for anyone, but he is the only character (bar terasaka) who is depicted to this extent distressed. this becomes ESPECIALLY more easy to read as a teetering-on-meltdown because of how yoshida’s distress in part stems from how this ordeal has entirely disrupted how he imagined this “vacation” to unfold. it is notable that before the poisoning, it’s yoshida who asserts that they will kill koro-sensei and then relax - especially as part of the terasaka gang previously distant with the assassination, this is all that is in his mind. and then the not only does the attempt fail but entirely unexpected disaster strikes and it is yoshida who frantically points out “we didn’t come to this island to be killed”

the departure scene captures this element of him as well, having him be one of the students openly sobbing during the final roll call for one

linking to him being overwhelmed is a few instances of his hypersensitivity when it comes to sensory issues, and then presumed hyposensitivity. regarding the former, the fascinating examples are found in his roll book time profile. theres a comment by karasuma that notes how when playing cops and robbers yoshida “was able to sense karasuma’s presence, when many students failed to do the same until he touched them” — connoting some form of possible tactile hypersensitivity on yoshida’s end, which could also explain why he never wears the school blazer instead opting for the cardigan all year round unless forced.

the other example found here is his favorite food: monster energy drink. he is the only character with a fave food listed who provides something like that — everyone else gives examples of actual, you know, cuisine. realistically, it’s likely a gag about how common a sponsor monster are at motorcycle races particularly in japan, BUT at the same time it can be interpreted as him having a hypersensitivity to taste where monster energy drink is a “safe food” for him. many autistic people, including myself, with hypersensitivities to taste or texture in food have a safe food that is often a processed snack food due to their predictable nature

regarding hyposensitivity, i think his special interest in motorcycles factors into it. motorcycles provide the rider with a feeling of immense adrenaline due to the pressure and extreme feeling of movement exerted onto them — hyposensitivity to pressure is the reason many autistic people love things like weighted blankets and vestibular hyposensitivity leads to stimming by rocking, spinning etc. regarding yoshida, his remedy for both of these things is riding his motorcycle

another “blatant” aspect of yoshida’s character that can open way for easy autistic interpretation concerns his communication, such as: how blunt he can be!! understandably this is often overlooked by him being in the proximity of itona, which is fair, but yoshida is similarly blunt without the awareness of how socially acceptable it is to be so. most notably this manifests in how he talks to korosensei in chapter 154 where in response to muramatsu saying he guesses korosensei “had his own worries” yoshida says “some pretty stupid worries compared to how depressed the rest of us were”

aside from the above instance the biggest moment displaying him misreading a situation + suggesting something that to him is a completely logically sound idea is during kayano’s reveal + attempted murder of korosensei

finally, mention of that moment brings me to his atypical thought process which is on full display here as he suggests in full sincerity that mimura play air guitar + distract kayano with his “badass skills” and doesn’t understand why others react to it in the flummoxed way they do because in his mind this is an easy, obvious, natural connection to make - mimura’s air guitar had a prominent impact on him, that should apply to everyone!!! the differing context doesnt occur to him, why would it? autism often causes us to fixate on small details rather than the “bigger picture” - this is a similar thought process with its disregarding of contexts that earlier in the story has him take itona on a bike ride to take his mind of the tentacles

conclusively, through connecting many of yoshida’s character traits to autistic symptoms + traits, most of which discussed here i personally experience with my own autism, i think he can extremely easily be read as autistic and joins the pantheon of class 3e students who also can also extremely easily be and are frequently read as such (okuda, sugaya, itona)!!!

TLDR: yoshida taisei has autism. i rest my case

Living in a World of Ignorance and Stereotypes

How many times have you heard people talking about autism like it’s a worse fate than death? In recent years, anti-vax movements were fueled by the idea that vaccines cause autism. More often than not, I hear autism being discussed in ways that portray autistic people as inhuman. However, autism is actually very similar to another neurological disorder—ADHD.

Although they are distinctly different neurodevelopmental disorders, most people fail to notice the crossover between the two. The social impairment often associated with autism also appears in those with ADHD. ADHD is known for impulsivity and inattention; autism can come with that, too. According to Neuropsychopharmacology Reports, a study was done on the similarities between ADHD and autism, proving the overlap between symptoms of ADHD and autism.

So why are ADHD and autism treated so vastly differently? When a person with ADHD struggles to communicate, they’re called shy, but when an autistic person has the same struggles, they’re labeled as low-functioning.

Stereotypes surrounding neurodevelopmental disorders create stigma against people with disabilities. Rather than doing research on certain topics, people tend to listen to stereotypes. This has been shown throughout history with queer people, neurodivergent people, disabled people, and people of color.

Not only are stereotypes harmful to people who they are targeted towards, but they make it difficult for people to realize the truth about diagnosable disabilities, such as ADHD and autism. I was never taught about disabilities; I was only taught the stereotypes behind disabilities. Even those who were diagnosed with ADHD at a young age were not taught about it. Consequently, people who have experienced this struggle to understand why they act and think in certain ways.

The people who said that ADHD is a ruse also believe that being autistic is worse than being dead. These are the very same people who watched me struggle to perform even the simplest tasks, things that I wanted to do so badly. These people created and upheld the stereotype that ADHD was a diagnosis that belonged to hyperactive elementary school boys, which prevented me from getting a diagnosis until sixteen. It continues to stand as a barrier between people who were assigned female at birth and adults who have ADHD. A diagnosis could aid them in significantly improving their quality of life and give them an understanding behind the difficulties they face daily.

Blatant ignorance cannot be cured, but the spread of misinformation can be stopped with the aid of others. Ignorance, even with positive intentions, can prevent people from finding the resources necessary to help them succeed and understand their disabilities. The best way to counteract this effect is to spread awareness.

first is Twilight Sparkle

I kin twilights autistic traits. She stims, has “tantrums” (they’re not necessarily meltdowns/shutdowns but are an outburst), bad at keeping secrets, basically all the stuff she learns before becoming a princess, her “twilighting”, takes stuff literally, has special interests, dislikes change, sometimes can’t tell her own emotions, and plans for everything that doesn’t need planning (I got all this from TikToks btw I’m not observant enough to notice all these things)

Next is Fluttershy

I also kin her autistic/personality traits. She struggles to meet new people, easily talks abt her spins, is shy and quiet but louder when you get to know her, poor time management, misinterpret things, enjoys being in the background but still part of things, and overly sensitive

Next is Pinkie Pie

Pinkie pie was one of the first characters I ever kinned, I kin her personality as a whole; aside from her blatant extrovertedness towards strangers and love for parties and sweets. She is my unmasked autism, she was me when I was younger and was my favorite for a loooong time before wind Whistler and Celestia came along

Last is Derpy Hooves

I kin Derpy’s personality and autistic traits as a whole. She is forgetful (hence her other name, Ditzy Doo), clumsy, and has a spin. There isn’t much to her since she’s a fan loved character and not meant to rlly have substance but I relate to her fully either way

honorable mention: Wind Whistler

(She’s the blue and pink pony) Wind Whistler is my favorite character out of the entire franchise, I kind of kin her. I relate to her logical thinking, although it doesn’t go to the point where my emotions don’t get in the way like it does for her. Sometimes I catch myself talking formally like she does too

User @toaster-trash made a post basically to mock and attack me with fallacies bc I disagree with them, so I'll make this post to reply since replying to their own post would be giving them reblogs and promoting their toxic behavior that is fulled by their followers.

You open the post by saying that you had a bad week and that you are pity. Sorry you feel that way or someone make u feel that way and that ur week was bad, but this is not relevant to the argument, is just a falacy of emotion. I disagree with you and u made a tantrum. You first of all don't know what is text and what is disidentification, also called misrecogition. which is enough to call out your post as having zero relevance. But given you are just a misguided person i will continue.

You said "we’ve got to decipher because English apparently isn’t this person’s forte for someone who is, apparently, such an avid reader and esteemed critic of English literature". So you mocking my english, doing ad hominem fallacy, that's sad. Then you keep the shitty tone saying that, according to you i am an "avid reader and esteemed critic of English literature". So you are literally need to mock bc i disagree with you, and u have to put me in a fake altar that i didn't put my self, u are trying to look pity. U tried to attack me by impliying that i feel myself some sort of academic or authority figure bc is more easy to use the apeal to pity. All this is ad hominem fallacy (an attempt to invalidate an opponent’s position based on a personal trait or fact about the opponent rather than through logic), a straw men fallacy, and appeal to pity fallacy . You are not a fighter for saying u embrace ur petiness, at countrary, is like when dude bros are reactionary.

The whole paragraph of "autistics have always existed and ppl can see themselves in old texts" is trying to fight an imaginary comment that i didn't make bc I didin't said that we can't see ourselves in the texts, I said that Victor is not autistic. You read in a wrong way my comment and create from the thin air that I think (which i don't) that we can't see things that reminded us of our experiences. You bring up The Vampyre, written by Polidori. It's not on topic, is not even part of the books that the Creature reads. The Vampyre was one of the texts that took place during the famous stay at Byron's mansion, where he, Polidori, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and Percy Shelly went. The Vampyre is based on the nasty Byron who treated Polidori (and a lot of other ppl) badly. Everyone in the group considered Byron to a greater or lesser extent as an unpleasant, petulant, egotistical man and that he believed that he could do whatever he wanted just by having money, being a man and being famous. You know who else was like pretty much like that? Percy Shelly and too many other writers of that time, and anything of this makes Victor gay, it just shows that Polidori and Shelly could draft bad men indifferent to women and others for disinterest, lack of empathy, and patriarchal behavior. Even if Percy was gay (I say gay in place of queer bc is what u say, he could had been pan for all matters), that doesn't make Victor gay. If Mary would wanted to make an statement on bad gay men in Frankenstein she would had make Clerval a copy of Byron or being pretty explicit about it.

Shelly show us that society by killing a mother, a bride, a maid, a little girl. In patriarcal society the norm is being homo afective, all must love men, specially men bc they see themselves as perfect and better than everyone else. That a society encourages that men see the world througth patriarcal lents don't make all men gay. Clerval makes us see how bad Victor was by contrast and how his behavior led Clerval and all the other characters to die. Mary W. S. portrait (we could say in some degree) her feelings about Percy and their situation in Elizabeth Lavenza and her interactions with Victor and other characters. Clerval can be seen not as the love interest of Victor, but as the type of friend that Mary would liked that Percy had bc non of his friends cared about her really nor cared well for him. Let's remember that Byron was ok with Percy leaving Mary, who recently loss a child and was deeply depresed and in bad health in general, going on a boat even when he didn't knew how to swimm and ended with Percy dead. Victor, as Percy, prefered men over women bc mysoginia, not bc he was gay. We really need to stop this idea and reading, this troop of gay men been bad like if it was bc they are gay and not bc they are men in a patriarcal society.

U are just driven by ur opinions and who you want to be gay, and not about the text. You are just reaaaally angry and frustrated, and even go to my archives to seek for a Frankestein quote bc to this point you can't really make a solid argument. You just keep off topic and even bring other arguments that no one is making bc you know that you are wrong. We need to deal with the fact that not everything has queer text or subtext. Life and literature is not a shitty tv show that makes queer baiting for u to love, sometimes characters will not represent you. I think is important to add that Victor was a cruel father to the Creature and Mary Shelly knew too many bad fathers, like her own father (her mother died), she felt abandoned. Percy abandoned all his children as well basically constantly abandoned Mary. Victor don't make a human, a man, bc gay feelings, he did so bc he was a bad men full hybris, misogynia, patriarchy. Victor created a child and then abandoned them as all men in Mary's life did with their own. In the novel women are just a few, but are the ones that cared about children, wellbeing, and life in general, but then they die. Victor cared more about men (father, professor, friend) than about women.

Is worth noticing that Mary believd in free love and was also queer as many of her friends so why would she portrait Victor as an evil gay men? doesn't make sense that she make him a gay that created life bc wants a gay couple or whatever if we try to follow the claim of the tumblr user. She would make the Creature for what? if he already had Clerval, his very best friend? if Victor loved Clerval, then how is the Creature a gay thing? like Toaster could have made other points, but didn't bc their claim is just an opinion without arguments. The Creature didn't have a mother only a father that rejected them but also molded them with the books that were from Victor. Mary didn't have a mother, and was formed by her father and their books, but was rejected by her father. We can say that Mary was the Creature, as we know that the 3 books mentioned that the Creature read were read also by Mary; Lost Paradise (about the pain of Lucifer being rejected by his father god and that the Creature also see themselves in Adam being rejected by god too), Wherter (about an unrequited love between a boy and a girl that end in the young men killin himself), and Lifes (Plutarch wrote bios comparing lives of famous Greeks with those of famous Romans from were the Creature learned about ethics, wrong and virtue). See how the Creature is not a methaphor or reference to gay love?

You constantly and in all the post tried to shift focus by introducing an irrelevant point, mislead, make false dilemas, appeal to ignorance, say or imply inaccurate things and do hasty generalizations for the lack of evidence and that the whole novel don't support your opinions. Your really fell in all the fallacies, including the circular one bc ur whole post is basically "Victor is autistic and gay bc I think victor is autistic and gay". You even did the pity fallacy at the begining. You tried to cherry-picking info, but that didn't even work bc didn't make sense with the real discusion, just with the ones u put to distract, and not even for that worked.

You are just unable to have a real argument, you don't want to admit that you are just complaining bc you didn't liked i disagree with you and can't deal with your feelings and a bad week nor you know how to channel that anger, frustration, and tiredness in a way that is not being a little troll of internet basically. You have nothing. Did that thing again where I turned a fun little ask into a whole essay. Whoops haha.

1. Libby Stein-Torres

I love "Mazel Tov, Libby!" so much. Everything about it was great, but it really felt like a coming out party for the Libster. How anxious she was when the party started going against her plans, especially at the Hora scene. Her moment with Molly at the end where she admits all she wanted to do was spend time with her best friend. The freaking turtle races!!! Such a great episode.

Libby gors through the "first friend" arc as I call it. We all know how it goes. Shy character meets somebody and becomes friends but they don't really know how to be friends with somebody yet so they have to figure it out as they go but it all works out because they're perfect for each other and 100% supportive of one another. And now she's in the title sequence too! Go Libby!

(Honorable mentions for this category: Webby Vanderquack and Casey Goldberg-Calderon, who both also went through the "first friend" arc and I just couldn't go without mentioning them. Libby gets the edge because Mazel Tov was so good)

2. Luz Noceda

I think I made a post about how sometimes I don't understand the blatant messaging of media until I see an hour long video essay about it. That was in reference to Luz. I had the pleasure of finding a lengthy video taking about her as ADHD/neurodivergent rep and had that in mind watching S3 and wow yeah it's definitely there.

In many ways, I'm not like Luz. We have different diagnoses and different traits. So obviously it's not 1:1. But in my time watching The Owl House, I've had my own (unrelated) journey about learning to accept myself and embrace who I am. Seeing it all culminate for Luz these past six months made me feel really good. Too good to describe because I wouldn't be able to do it justice.

3. Huey Duck

Oh hey what's this how'd my favorite show end up on this list that's crazy.

I talked about this during Huey hours earlier this week but I'll repeat it here. I really appreciated how Ducktales handled Huey's autistic traits for the most part. Astro-B.O.Y.D.! being the obvious example, but I want to focus on examples like the Terra-firmians episode or Timephoon!, times where Huey was "wrong". Sure, his reliance on order and structure and his strict adherence to the JWG led him to inaccurate conclusions, but he was never *wrong* for doing it that way. The lesson was never "stop being who you are and doing what you're doing".

Compare that to the seemingly countless examples where Huey bailed the family out of a situation because of his knowledge in certain subjects or recalling rules from the guidebook. With a success rate like that, it's great that the show let him flex that strength whenever it could.

The lesson of this whole thing seems to just be to never stop being who you are. Even though sometimes it might set you apart and make you different, or might be difficult to navigate, or might send you in the wrong direction on occasion, it's still worth it to be true to yourself and do what you love. Do what works. Do what makes you you.

That's the lesson I've learned in the past few years. And maybe it's not a coincidence that I learned that lesson at the same time that I watched these shows. Whether I noticed it or not, I might have been inspired by them more than I think.

You know what time it is! It's physco analyzing owl house characters time >:) tw for discussions of mental illness, trauma, etc. And spoiler warning for s3!

Part 1: Hunter (he's my favorite ok)

Something I love about the owl house is its various depictions of ptsd- pretty much all of the characters have gone through multiple traumatic events but were all affected individually and differently, just like how real people would. It's also pretty obvious that the level of trauma is dependent on how much support the characters had from other people in their lives.

The most obvious example would be Hunter, who has had no support until meeting the hexsquad- he's seen in the show displaying blatant symptoms of c-ptsd from years of abuse and neglect. He's been not only subjected to grueling training and manipulation but also extreme isolation which, speaking from personal experience, is very damaging.

He's also a cult survivor which I think the show has handled very well- everything from the paranoia and panic attacks about running away to the subconscious self-righteousness that the emperor's coven instilled in him (evidenced in things like "I was in the *emperor's coven*. I can handle a little pain 😌". He learned a lot of untrue things about the world while in the coven and is seen having to work to consciously deconstruct those ideas and learn the truth, just like a real cult survivor would.

It's also clear he was gaslighted by the way he talks to others in thanks to them, by ending a lot of things he says with "It's not in my head" or "you believe me right?". I think Hunter would very likely have DID and I see a lot of traits in him (such as the golden guard persona he seems to have), though I sadly don't think that will ever be canon. I would love to see more good rep for DID as part of a system myself though.

He also has a lot of autistic traits though I go back and forth a lot on wether or not I think he's actually autistic. He clearly has trouble making friends and understanding social cues but thats a natural effect of being isolated for a long time so it's unclear if that's from the c-ptsd or possibly autism. He's very passionate about his interests and loves to learn and talk about them but his interests are also pretty widespread and diverse. It's still not gonna stop me from projecting my autism onto him though >:)

I did a response thread to the one shown in the screnshots, and was encouraged to repost it (with edits) on Tumblr as a meta post on Wednesday, so here it is!

Yes that portrayal was um, not very good BUT here's why its problematic-ness is...debatable.

She's a textbook example of what I call the Asshole Savant trope, which is an evolution of the Idiot Savant trope that used to be the default portrayal of autistics. Think Raymond from Rain Man vs BBC Sherlock.

(Yes, their answer to humanizing autistics was to portray more smart assholes. Not a very big step.)

"Okay, but why are you calling it a debatably problematic trope?"you ask.

Well, some autistics actually love stories where non-autistics are so dependent on an autistic's skills, the autistic gets away with being an asshole to them. It's their version of a revenge fantasy.

In fact, that's how the Asshole Savant trope got so popular in the first place. A world where we're so good at what we do, even our haters have to swallow their pride and beg for our help?

As problematic as the trope is, both autistics and non-autistics LOVE THAT SHIT.

That being said, it is possible to use this trope respectfully so long as we're careful about the way our savant protagonist's assholery manifests.

Snarky comebacks when someone's being condescending to them? Totally cool.

Constantly manipulating their friends into signing up for life-threatening adventures? NO, BAD. ABSOLUTELY NOT. BURN IT WITH FIRE.

Like Sonny said, autistics are already unfairly accused of being manipulative all the time. Non-autistics love assuming that if an autistic has enough social awareness to pull off manipulation, they will do so without hesitation because we're unempathetic assholes, right?Except not all of us are bitter and spiteful enough to view manipulation as a mere tool for petty revenge/indulging our special interests. Just because non-autistics manipulate us all the time into doing what they want, doesn't mean we want to see an autistic character do the same thing to them.

That's why I personally find Wednesday's portrayal incredibly uncomfortable, but acknowledge (reluctantly) that it's okay if some people find solace in it. For some folks, she's just a revenge fantasy character. Her blatant manipulation and general evil-doing IS the point. The problem comes when they project characters like Wednesday onto actual autistic people and assume we're all just socially inept villains.

I'm not saying you're evil if you enjoy Wednesday. Just be careful of which things you're assuming is an autistic trait.

(Also, Wednesday's in the teen drama genre, where popular tropes include Fuck the Authorities, Miscommunication=Plot Device, and Outcast Protagonist Saves The Day. It's no surprise that the Asshole Savant trope was a perfect fit for Wednesday too.)
