IT’S ONE LETTER OFF FROM NAUR… 😭

I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either. The name just doesn’t… roll off the tongue as nicely?? This will definitely take me some getting used to just like Falena.

It’s odd because I thought EN initially localized the name as “Baul”; it was changed to… Baur… more recently??? Alas, I didn’t take screenshots before the update where this change was implemented but I SWEAR IT’S TRUE 💦

ADDENDUM: For people wondering when Sebek’s grandpa is brought up by name, it’s 7-34 of the main story!

Every time there’s a minor update, I go to check, hoping and praying they changed the spelling back.

But they haven’t 😭💔

Please change it back to Baul, I don’t know why they changed it to Baur. I liked the old spelling more 🥲

Couldn’t they focus on the font, grammar, spelling, or even the spacing issue? Rather than make changes like these 😭💔

Was bored, so compiled a list of the relatives now revealed in TWST.

Potential Spoilers below.

First up, we have Leona's nephew, Cheka Kingscholar and the source of Leona's angst. Based of off Simba from The Lion King.

Next up is Jamil's little sister, Najma Viper. Believed to be based of off Jafar's sister Nasira from the PS1 game Nasira's revenge.

After that, we have Meemaw Felmier, A.K.A Marja, the Sledding Champion. A picture you find duirng the Harveston Event shows her looking identical to Epel in her youth, meaning this could be Epel's future as a sweet little old grandpa.

Speaking of grandparents, we have Sebek's grandfather, Baul Zigvolt (I know the English Translation has it as 'Baur' as in 'Briar', but being named after one of the most powerful demons in the Ars Goetia sounds much cooler and fits with Maleficant's raven being named Diabolo/Diaval so!) It'll be intersting to see if we ever meet him in the modern era, while we know he's probably where some of Sebek's internalised anti-humanisms come from, I do like to imagine meeting him and he's sporting a comfy cardigan and moustache.

Next up is Deuce's sweet mother, Dilla Spade! A delivery woman in town, she's done her best to raise Deuce the best she can.

Another parent we've now encountered, Eric Shoenheit, Vil's very doting and supportive father and celebrity in his own right!

And the last parents, Mr and Mrs Shroud. Can't you just see the family respemblance?

The localization of Sebek's grandfather's name turned out to be quite a shock, not gonna lie.

But it reminded me of a post I made last year with some info from wiki.

Could it be related to this? Anyway, It would also be amusing if Sebek's mother were to be named Ibero or something :)

That’s for sure a possibility! Baul/Baur is depicted as wearing a crocodile’s mask and hails from the Sunset Savanna, so maybe the localization wanted to put emphasis on his animal origins instead of Egyptian mythos. It’s interesting that the TL team may have pulled from scientific names!

… Imagine if EN had localized Sebek as Sebec to match his grandpappy though 😂

On the topic of another name change, I think the localization went with “Falena” over “Farena” because the /l/ is also present in Leona’s name. In Japanese, it is difficult to distinguish the /r/ and /l/ sounds and they’re often treated as the same thing so translating words with the shared r-l sound into English often calls for creativity.

I think maybe we would be less put off by the changes if we weren’t so used to fan translations using “Farena” and “Baul” for so long, y’know? Recalibrating our brains to “Falena” and “Baur” will take some time and effort 😂 Personally I dislike name changes only because I don’t want to have to go back and retag older related posts… and then I’m also not quite sure what to call them when I speak about those characters in future posts. It can get confusing!

idk if this sounds silly but is baul dead in our original timeline...

There hasn't been any dialogue to suggest that Baul/Baur is dead in modern day Twisted Wonderland; Sebek and the others still talk about him very fondly and have never once said he is "passed", "late", etc. Sebek also definitely still mentions recent interactions he has had with his grandfather, like how Baul recently recommended him a book. So yeah, Baul's still alive.

The Baul we meet in book 7 is Baul at his prime, during the period when he served under Lilia. By now, he is retired and spends his days in a house located near a lake (where he sometimes takes his grandchildren salmon fishing; this is why Sebek's favorite food is salmon carpaccio).

Pretty out of the blue question but do you think Sebek's whole family have religious or mythical names? Or is his dad the only one with a normal name?

Sebek's named after the Egyptian deity Sobek and Baul is (probably) named after Baal which is the name of another deity and a demon.

I think that most of the names have some type of symbolism when it comes to twst.

I know I’ve read about Sebek and Baul having similar names to gods, and with the way they changed Baul to Baur in EN, you could tell it was on purpose for the prehistoric croc connections 🤔

I would assume that even Mrs. Zigvolt and the rest of her children would have a connection to gods. After all, some fae are worshipped in myths and we have seen the high regard Sebek has for Malleus and Lilia too. So this could be a tie in to that. 🤔
