How about Velvette with a journalist reader who's there to interview her and struggles to stay professional in the face of her relentless flirting over the course of the interview. Reader may or may not leave with an "autograph" 😉
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n — oh my god guys, I’M A JOURNALIST!!! Wow, what are the odds! Anyways, marry me?
warnings — Velvette being very pushy, very suggestive, reader is so done, lowkey borderline harassment but… sorry guys she would, NOT PROOFREAD!!!
summary — Journalist reader tries to interview the youngest and newest member of the Vees, however she seems to be interested in something else.
Tumblr media
The goal was to get people talking. Questions should have the ability to cover a wide variety of subjects, snowballing into the next topic with ease, you knew that.
However, the questions cartwheeled rather than snowballed. “Being a new comer in hell, making an alliance with two of hells most powerful overlords must have been difficult. How’d you do it?”
“I’m a big girl, babes, I can do a lot of things.”
Okay, so the way she licked her lips when she said that was a little provocative, but you decided to include the statement alone rather than the details. After all, the ‘sass’ that could be interpreted could keep things entertaining.
And she was, to be fair. She gave off enough personality with each quote that she would practically pop right off the page. Her mannerisms showed when she spoke, you could use that.
After all, god knows this was going to be better than that Zestial interview. That guy was as cryptic as he was unenthusiastic to those who pry. Jesus, Velvette gave you much more to work with.
However, what started off as a good interview was getting harder and harder to make do with. You figured you could use one of her flirtatious comments, break the fourth wall a bit, but dear god, would she ever answer the question?
“—Of course, I’m not assuming anything. You just look like you know your way around a pussy.”
“Miss Velvette—“
“But shit, aren’t I flattering you? Maybe you can prove it too me but until then—“
“Miss Velvette,” You hiss, brows furrowing together in pure irritation, “The question was about your history in fashion.”
“I’d love to know your history in dating,” She smiled back.
She was pretty, that was undeniable. And honestly infuriatingly cute, but your job was important.
“Tell you what, maybe if you answer all my questions accordingly, i’ll give you my number,” you offer, “How’s that sound?”
And she did. You were back where you started, interesting replies and explanations, lots of good material for an article.
So at the end, you pause your recording, pack up your laptop, and do as you promised.
Putting your contact in her phone, you shake her hand, “It was a pleasure, miss Velvette. I hope we work together soon.”
“Oh, I know we will,” Her smile was smile and knowing, “One more thing.”
With that, she leans up planting a kiss on, not your cheek like you expected, but the upper part of your neck, making you suck in a breath.
“You know, I never fucking liked journalists,” She spoke as her lips left your skin, and began to walk away, “Thought you all were a bunch of noisy assholes.”
You didn’t say anything, your hand just slowly came up to your neck where her lipstick was presumable staining. A smile drew at your lips.
“Except, I do like you darling,” She stopped in the doorway, “Kisses!”

How the Batfam Reacts to Dick and Jason Dating a Black Widow HC
Dick:
Tumblr media
• He met you on a mission where you were partnered together
• Dick immediately recognized the emblem on your suit showing that you were a Widow
• He was suspicious at first thinking that you were still with the organization until he heard you talking about it
• “Dreykov stood no chance against the freed widows.” He heard you explaining to Wonder Woman, “I hope that they’re doing well on Themyscira”
• He knew that if you were in cahoots with Diana, you must be sound
• When you were on the mission, you started talking a lot
• You thought he was funny and charming and he thought you were smart and witty
• Dick liked that you could handle yourself in situations and that you had grown from everything that had happened to you, not crumble from it
• When the mission was over, you two exchanged numbers
• One day, a few months later, you texted him and said that you were looking to move to Gotham
• You wanted to know if he’d go look at apartments with you since he knew Gotham better
• He was so excited and despite him trying to play it cool, everyone knew that he was up to something
• He made the excuse that Wally was doing some apartment shopping and wanted to hang out that week
• Let’s be honest, when you find your apartment you probably hook up or have a Disney binge night
• After a wild weekend, he heads back to the manor and is glowing
• Always on his phone
• Is in a good mood
• Sneaks off during patrol
• The works
• Everyone knew that he must be dating someone, it was so obvious
• When everyone finally finds out that he’s dating a Widow, it’s because they follow him to your apartment
• He’s there to work on some detective stuff that was going around in Gotham
• You had your monitors set up and your suit laying over the sofa when Tim, Jason, and Steph broke in through the window
• You pushed Dick behind the coach, rolling to take cover while you drew a Glock that was tucked in your waistband
• “Stand still, hands where I can see them!”
• “Y/N/N, those are my siblings!” Dick said tackling you, “idiot siblings at that”
• “You’re dating a Widow?!” While Jason still had his helmet on, his sense of surprise was evident
• “You’re dating a Widow and you called her by a nickname?” Steph gawked, “Never in all my days-“
• “You guys can’t tell Bruce!” Dick said frantically, “Tim don’t you dare touch that com”
• “Too late.” Damian came into the apartment, giving it a once over and glaring at you, “So this is the distraction that has been plaguing Grayson.” “Is he paying you to court him?”
• Bruce came into the apartment later to haul his kids out after they had basically interrogated you about life and how you and Dick were dating
• Bruce was suspicious of you at first, as he is, but after a few weeks, you were invited to patrol with everyone
• You and Jason trauma bonded and shot guns together
• Cass and Damian liked you since you were an assassin, and a skilled one at that
• Steph liked you cause you were pretty and badass
• Babs and Timmy thought you were intelligent and a good friend to have
• Bruce and Alfred eventually come around, Bruce likes that you’re loyal and intelligent
• Alfred likes that you’re not a crazy clout chaser
• Everyone adjusts really well to you quickly, and you easily become part of the family
Jason:
Tumblr media
• You two met while you were rehabilitating on Themyscira with Diana as your mentor
• You and Artemis had quickly become friends and she had you come with her on a mission
• You needed something at a faster pace that you could exercise your skills with
• Artemis introduced you to Jason and you two hit it off quickly
• She noticed this and had you two paired up for a mission
• She’s not Artemis anymore y’all, she’s Cupid/ Eros and she just shot Jason Todd in the butt with an arrow
• He’s so gushy over you
• Puppy dog eyes and everything
• At first he’s like, it’s got to be the Russian accent
• But after a few hours, he knew it definitely wasn’t the accent
• When you’re still living at Themyscira, he asks Artemis to take you on as many missions as possible so that he can see you
• When you’re finally done living on the island, he’s the first to offer a new place
• Wants you to live at once of his safe houses in Gotham
• You would accept the offer but you already had gotten an apartment
• Jason was so depressed about it until you told him that it was in Gotham
• “What- you’re like my only friend. I’m not moving to LA or something.” You told him
• He was just puppy eyes and gushy
• Everyone saw a change in his demeanor and they were suspicious of what was going on
• Steph and Dick followed him one night to your apartment where they saw you in your widow suit and him in his red hood suit eating messy burgers and fries
• His boots and helmet were strewn about on the floor and weapons were littering the kitchen table
• He probably has his head in your lap at one point for you to string your fingers through your hair
• They’re both excited and rush back to the cave to spill the beans
• A few days later Dick tells Jason that he should invite his new gf over
• “You dickhead how’d you know about that! We’re you stalking me?”
• Maybe Dick was
• When you showed up to the manor, Damian immediately challenged you to a sparing duel
• Everyone but Jason was hesitant and when you landed the kid on his butt he was beaming with joy
• That’s when you earned Cass and Tim’s respect
• Damian liked you now too, but he wasn’t going to admit it after that beat down
• Bruce got to know more about you mainly from Diana
• Since he trusted her, it was easier to not be so suspicious about you
• Alfred liked you since you brought out the good in Jason and you were good help when he needed it
• The entire family ends up liking you really quickly, but you have to start setting boundaries about them coming and crashing in your place at some ungodly hour of the night
• Sometimes, the last thing you want to see at 4am is Dick Grayson sprawled out on the coach with his dogs out
• Jason is always welcome though

Wrong Number 3
(2:21 am) I just realized something (2:21 am) Ur a cooking teacher (2:22 am) Who can't fry a egg (2:23 am) You're a fraud 🫵
[7:29 am] I can fry an egg just fine I just can't make the yolks runny. It's too hard to time it right. And why are you up thinking about eggs at 2 am?
(7:47 am) I was up thinking about you at 2 am
Steve felt his stomach flip as he sipped his coffee and set his belongings down in his classroom. Eddie didn't play games. He always said exactly what he was thinking. And it drew Steve wild.
(7:48 am) And about how your students might clown on you for not being able to scramble an egg
[7:49] Aww you're worried about me?
(7:49 am) Kids can be little monsters (7:50 am) Actually how old are the little monsters you teach?
[7:51] Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14. Speaking of, they'll be arriving soon so...
(7:52 am) Godspeed you academic warrior
Eddie didn't typically text so late on weeknights. Not since learning Steve was a teacher. It was just that he truly HAD been up and thinking of him. Steve drove him crazy and he thought he was doing a good job keeping a lid on it. 2 am texts were what happened when the lid got loose but Steve didn't seem put off by it.
At about half past three, Steve called him. Eddie was glad he made that leap with his first call. The sound of Steve's voice never failed to warm him through. Eddie was in the middle of collecting axes for sharpening at the end of his shift.
"What's cookin' good lookin'?", Eddie greeted as he picked up.
"Today was good. Had a really riveting conversation about meatloaf versus pate with the kids", Steve said.
"Meatloaf rocks and pate is just cold meatloaf for rich people. End of discussion."
"Well, we talked about it for like fifteen minutes. Had a real interesting tangent on forcemeats in general."
Eddie paused. "Excuse me?"
"You'd be surprised at what kids are into. This one I taught last year was really into rice-"
"I need you to backtrack just a bit. 'Forcemeat'?"
"Yeah it's-oh grow up", Steve chided while shaking his head. He had just gotten home and was taking off his work clothes for something more comfortable. He thought about what Eddie might think he'd look nice in. "Not even my 12 year olds are this childish."
There was something about the way Steve talked about his students. Like they were his actual children. The conversation continued for a few minutes more before Steve suddenly had to hang up. Eddie tried not to think much of it, but it wasn't the first time that it had happened.
Steve ended the call just as Robin came into the apartment. She narrowed her eyes at him, then looked to the phone in his hand. Steve hid it behind his back and winced at practically telling on himself.
"You're hiding something."
"No I'm not."
"And now you're lying to me."
"No I'm not!"
Robin pounced and wrestled him for the phone. It wasn't a real fight of course. Steve could've pinned her in seconds but a part of him was tired of keeping the secret. And obviously, she knew how to unlock his phone.
"Who's Eddie?", she asked, sitting on his back triumphantly.
"A guy."
"Thank you, I had no idea it could be a man's name. You've been texting him aaaaaaa llllllllllllot."
"Are you reading them!? Robin!"
"Where did you meet him?", Robin said as she got up, continuing to read through their conversations.
"I um, technically, haven't. Yet."
Robin gave him an odd look and Steve spilled everything to her. To her credit, Robin listened to the full story before throwing one of the couch pillows at him.
"Stephen Elliott Harrington! Did no one teach you stranger danger? You just kept texting him? And calling? And I saw the pictures you sent. You know he can find out where we live? What if I came home to your skinless corpse??!"
It went on for a while like that and when Robin was finished, she collapsed onto the couch. Steve sat across from her on the coffee table. He waited for her to silently process it all.
"You think he's cute?"
"What I've seen of him, yeah."
Robin sighed. "I can't believe you're turning into the guy who has a internet girlfriend."
Steve rolled his eyes but then balked when she started to read through his messages again.
"And I can't believe you haven't even started flirting yet."
"I've been flirting with him the whole time!" Maybe not the whole time but-
"You're giving him Diet Steve. Why are you holding back?"
Steve shrugged, looking sheepish now. Now Robin was rolling her eyes.
"Steve, we're getting you a date."
"But he's-"
"A virtual one. Jesus is he an axe murderer?", Robin said as she looked to one of the texts.
"No, he just works with them. Axes! Not murderers."
--------------------------------
Eddie was about to sit down to a movie when his phone buzzed.
[5:17 pm] Thinking about you.
Oh. Now that was some text to get.
(5:18 pm) Oh yeah? (5:18 pm) What about me?
Steve looked to Robin. They were sitting cross-legged next to each other on his bed.
"What do I say?"
"Be honest, duh."
"If I'm honest I'm gonna talk about his hands."
Robin shook her hands at him like she wanted to wring his neck. Steve got the idea and decided to put himself out there.
[5:21 pm] Your hands. I think about them a lot actually
Eddie had not given his own hands much thought. But knowing that Steve admired them, he gave them a second look. He thought about them gripping Steve's thighs.
(5:23) You're gonna make me blush (5:24) What would you do with my hands Stevie?
Steve panicked and looked to Robin. "Are we sexting? Is he getting me to sext?"
"That's the idea, dingus. I said I was getting you a date. Now tell him what you want him to do."
"I don't know I'd....I'd want to..." Steve trailed off, looking at his phone while the fingers of his other hand brushed against his lips.
Robin stole the phone from him again and started typing. "'First...I'd suck..on them'."
"Robin!"
"Is that not what you want?"
Steve shrugged and Robin continued. "You've got me on the clock for five more minutes before I go out. You dictate, I'll type."
Steve hated how much he liked the idea. Especially when he heard the ping of Eddie's reply. "What did he say?"
Robin cleared her throat. "'Yeah? You wanna suck on them? I bet you got a beautiful mouth.' Oh he's good."
"Yeah", Steve breathed out. "Really good." He thought about Eddie sticking his fingers in and pressing down on his tongue, his rings tasting metallic and so nice.
"'I wanna choke on them'", Robin said out loud as she typed. "Is it too soon to call him Daddy?"
"What?!" That snapped Steve out of it.
"Oh come on. Tattoos, the hair, his job. He wants to be called Daddy."
"Robin don't call him Daddy."
"Pops?"
Steve took his phone from her and looked to Eddie's reply.
(5:30 pm) I'd only choke you if you were being bad (5:30 pm) Are you gonna be bad baby?
[5:31 pm] Maybe. I can be good too. So good.
(5:32 pm) Lemme call you baby wanna hear you
Steve dialed without hesitation just as Robin was leaving. Her work was done.
"Don't get murdered while I'm out!", she shouted just as Eddie picked up.
"Hey pretty baby", Eddie said.
"Hey. You said you wanted to hear me?"
"Yeah. I wanna hear you say those things with your own voice."
"Like how I wanna choke on your fingers? Among other things?"
Steve could hear Eddie let out a breath on the other end. The power he felt right now was intoxicating.
"Bet you'd look so good on your knees."
Steve hummed while pressing his fingertips to his lips. If Eddie asked, he'd suck on them. Let the wet noises fill his ears, let Eddie know how good he could be.
"Darlin' you went quiet."
"I'm thinking", Steve said, laying down on his bed. "I wanna show you, Eddie."
Eddie swallowed. This man would be the death of him. He'd nearly jerked off to just a picture of his fully clothed lower half. If he saw more...if he saw everything-
"Eddie! We've got a Code Red!"
"Jesus! Knock!"
Steve sat up quick at the shouting coming from Eddie's end. It sounded like someone had barged in.
"Eddie?"
"Sorry. Sorry Steve. I gotta handle something. Um, call you back? Please?"
"Eddie, I want to video call you."
"V..video...?"
"Yes. I wanna see you. Please."
"Yes. Yes, a thousand times-hold your horses! Uh, tomorrow? It's Saturday, so you're free, right? Can we make it a date?"
"A date", Steve nodded. "I'll see you then. I'll be thinking of you."
"And I'll be counting the seconds. 1-one thousand, 2-one thousand, 3-one th-ouch! Okay! Damn!"
Eddie hung up and Steve still had the phone to his ear, smiling. He had a video call date. He had a date with Eddie!
Shit what should he wear?

Can I request poly! Judgement Day with a s/o who's a stationary enthusiastic? Never leave me alone in the stationary section at the drugstore because I will buy the entire world
thanks for the request!
stationary sweetheart // poly!judgment day x fem!reader
Readers POV
My eyes widened as I spotted the stationary section. All the bright colors, the pretty gels and inks, the various patterns printed onto sticky notes, the different textures of paper, the abundance of notebooks and notepads. All of it drew me in and I couldn't stop myself when my feet started moving closer and closer.
I slowly walked down the aisle, stopping multiple times to admire something. Coming to a halt, I looked around and realized that my four partners were no where to be seen. Furrowing my brows for a second, I shrugged and carried on browsing.
I gasped when I saw it. The prettiest pen I had ever laid my eyes on. The stick of the pen was wrapped in purple ribbon and purple feathers sprouted from the top. I carefully grabbed the pen and observed it in my grasp. Removing the cap, I scribbled lightly on a piece of sampling paper and immediately grinned. The ink was a beautiful purple gel.
Meanwhile, the other four members of the Judgment Day had been on one mission: get cough medicine. That was until they noticed their fifth member and beloved girlfriend was no longer following behind them. Rhea immediately started to panic, thinking of the worst. The four of them made quick work of spreading out through the store to search.
Back in the stationary section, I happily smirked as my eyes landed on the marker display. These were some of my favorites as my partners would usually let me color on their tattoos to waste time, so I'm always on the look out for new colors. I spotted a packet of pastel markers and another packet that had an 'under the sea' color palette. Holding both packets in my arms along with my purple pen, the various shades and patterns of sticky notes caught my eye. Wandering over to them, I inspected all the different prints and picked up a few packs. I knew we needed some more at the house, so my partners should understand.
A dark blur crossed the aisle opening in front of me before stopping and quickly backing up. "Sweetheart, we've been looking all over for you!" It was Dom. He walked over to me and chuckled at the sight of my arms filled with stationary goodies.
"Sorry, Dom Dom. I couldn't help myself! But, look!" I held out the pretty purple pen and moved it around so the feathers would tickle him.
"That's a real nice pen, chica, but you had Mami worried sick." Dom lectured, but gently smiled at me before I could defend myself. "Let me tell her I found you real quick." He pulled out his phone and sent her a text.
Before either of us had time to leave the aisle, Mami came barreling around the corner and swiftly walked over to us. "Baby, you can't just walk away from us like that! We had no idea where you went!" She said in an exasperated manner, her brows furrowed.
"Mami, I'm sorry, but I just wanted to look at all the pretty stuff... Plus, we're out of sticky notes at home." I held up one of the multiple packs of sticky notes in my arms and watched with a small smile as her resolve faded.
She sighed and shook her head before grabbing all of the items from my arms and putting them in her basket. "Well, thanks for getting the sticky notes, babe. Just let one of us know when you want to go down a specific aisle next time. You scared the hell out of me... thought something happened to you." She held out her hand for me to grab, which I did before proceeding to kiss her cheek. Rhea smirked down at me, then switched her attention to the two men jogging into the aisle. Damian and Finn were out of breath as they looked at me with pointed gazes.
"Don't worry, guys. Rhea and I already gave her the lecture." Dom chimed in, picking up a pack of Halloween stickers behind him and holding it up for me to see. "You want more stickers, too, baby?"
I gasped, "Yes!", snatching the stickers and throwing them in the basket.
"Lass, what do you need that many sticky notes for?" Finn eyed the contents of the basket and looked to me. I pulled the three packs out and held them up to him.
"This one's for whatever anyone wants, this one's for dates on the calendar, and this one's for me to leave little notes around the house for you all." I shyly smiled and gently put them back in the basket.
"You're too sweet, babygirl." Damian pulled me into him and kissed the top of my head. "I better get the most lovey-dovey shit in those little notes." He said with raised eyebrows.
"Of course! The most lovey-dovey shit for all of you." I giggled and Damian attacked the side of my head with soft kisses.
He nuzzled my face into his chest. "Our sweet little angel. But, don't ever scare us like that again." His voice became stern.
"I won't, promise." They all gave me a quick kiss before we checked out and headed home to make good use of my new stationary goodies.

Tumblr media
“Eddie,” you whisper, stolen phone held close to your face as you look around the room. He hasn’t picked up the phone and you're afraid he wont answer, but he does, he always does.
“Eddie!” you whisper again, relieved but still in fight or flight. “I’m at a party.”
“Y/N? what the hell? It’s like 3AM, Wayne was asleep…”
“Eddie listen, please. You have to help me I don’t feel real anymore.”
“You don’t feel real?” his frustration quickly dissolved, as it always did with you, and replaced with only concern. Wayne too.
“Will you help me, please?” you sounded so small. Eddie was already putting on his jacket, listening to you intently as you babbled about your fuzzy head.
“Babe, I need you to breath, okay? It’s just me and you talking, ya? Just take a breath, and tell me where to go, and I’ll come okay? I’m coming right now, just tell me where to go, baby.”
When he finally coerced enough of an answer from you, he was out the door, rushing to your aid. He was speeding down deserted streets to get to you, sick with worry. He felt like this was somehow his fault.
You guys were friends because you tutored him. At first he hated it, but he grew to like you... a lot... so he kept going, just to spend time with you. And you guys had been working together earlier when you dropped a bomb that some basketball prick had asked you out to this stupid house party - the one he was currently rescuing him from - and it had led to a small fight. Eddie didn't remember exactly what he said but it was something along of the lines of "don't come crawling to me when he doesn't call you back."
Eddie was just jealous, and he knew that. He should've just told you the truth, but instead he just got mad, defensive. He really had no right and he knew that, as far as he knew, you got paid to tutor him. Paid to be in his life.
He parked like shit and ran into the house, looking for you. He drew everyone's eyes, but he didn't care. He figured you'd be in a bedroom, since there was no one by the phone in the kitchen. His heart raced as he ran up the stairs, opening every door without hesitation.
He knocked on one door and was met with you yelling, "go away!"
Thank fuck, he thought, knocking again. "It's me, it's Eddie."
The door flew open a second later, and you wrapped your arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug. Eddie guided you back into the room and closed the door.
"You came," you cried, pushing your face deeper into his chest. He melted into you, wrapping his arms around your an holding you close. You were fine, you were with him. His hands soothed you, spreading warmth everywhere they touched you.
"Of course I came," Eddie said, like it was an obvious thing. "What happened?"
"Too many drinks," you mumbled, squeezing him tighter. "You were right," you cried, "he never called."
"I wasn't right," he said, quietly. "I'm sorry I was so mean to you."
"S'ok Eddie," you mumbled, you pulled back from him enough to look up at his face. He looked so soft, eyes filled with worry and care for you. Your tear stained cheeks made his chest tighten, and he wished he could take away your pain, and sadness. "He never called, or picked me up so I just came by myself," you explained, eyes welling up with more tears, making the knife in Eddie's chest spun. "And made friends with some girls and had some drinks and then, and then-" you choked on a little cry.
"Then what, sweetheart?" Eddie cupped your cheeks, brushing his thumbs along the apples of your cheeks, clearing them of the wild tears, leaving flushed skin across your cheeks and nose. His hands found place on either side of your face, gently forcing you to look up at him. Every move was tender and comforting.
"Then Chance showed up with his friends and they all laughed at me," you pushed yourself back into his chest, your shoulders rising and falling with frantic crying. Eddie just held you, keeping you close and giving any comfort he can. His own eyes got hazy just from hearing your sad little whimpers.
"Will you take me home?" you mumbled, slightly muffled by his chest.
"Yeah," he said, "course, sweetheart. Let me just..." He pulled away to properly wipe all the tears off your cheeks.
You looked up at him again, and he felt his heart melt. He had a big crush on you, and he already knew that, but it had manifested by teasing you while you tried to help him with algebra. But it was different now, he still wanted to do that, but he also wanted to hold you, love you, know you. Even with tear stained cheeks and shitty guest room lighting, you still looked beautiful.
Eddie wondered what rumours would fly around the school as you led him by the hand out the front door. All eyes were on the two of you, but you didn't seem bothered by it. In fact, he was surprised about how casually you connected yourself to him in front of all these people. Eddie wasn't exactly popular, but you never seemed to treat him different from anyone else.
He couldn't stop thinking all of these nice things about you as he walked towards to van.
"Thanks for coming, Eddie," you said again, as he opened the passenger door for you.
As you climbed in he said, "Anytime, babe."
You had to wonder if he knew that he was sending butterflies on a rampage in your stomach everytime he called you sweetheart, or baby. If you were honest with him, you should've stopped tutoring him months ago. You'd stopped tutoring when you got a job at the bowling alley in town, but you just didn't want to stop seeing him. So even though you weren't getting paid anymore, you kept going to the library at 3pm on Tuesday, and Thursday. That's when you would get a full hour, sometimes two, of totally uninterrupted time with Eddie.
But that was your little secret. Eddie had no idea.
"Why did he do that?" you asked once Eddie was driving. He reached over the middle to scoop up your hand, and hold it softly in his. He brushed his thumb over yours.
"Those guys are assholes," Eddie muttered, "it's not even worth thinking about."
You made a sad noise in response, looking out the window at the dingy street lights.
"Chance is an idiot," he reassured, mocking tone over his name. "I bet you a thousand bucks he regrets what he's done as soon as he sees your pretty smile at school on Monday."
You hiccuped. The memory of the many drinks you had at the party was still fresh. And your stomach swirled suddenly.
"Time for bed," you said, slumping against the seat.
"Yeah, yeah, I'll get you to bed all right," he joked, winking your way. You blushed, sinking into the seat a little more. You smiled a little. "Awh, there it is. Just trying to make you smile, that's all."
The rest of the ride was mostly silent. Eddie's stereo playing something quiet. Your hands were still weaved together, and you were hesitant to remove yourself when he stopped in front of your house. He took his seatbelt off, but stayed by your side, looking at you with those puppy dog eyes. You could feel yourself falling into them, so you pulled your eyes away, forcing yourself to push those feelings down.
"Thank you for everything," you whispered, voice hoarse from all the sobbing. "Maybe sometime we hang out it won't be about math or me crying," you joked. When you got out of the car, Eddie followed; being the gentleman he is, he walked you to the door. You fished the keys out of your pocket.
"I'd like that," he said, no edge to voice. No smirk or grin or joke. He really would like that.
You unlocked the door, and even though you didn't want to, and he didn't want you to... you left him for the evening. Chance was long forgotten, and new feelings of appreciation brewing for Eddie. Maybe there was something there. Suddenly... it didn't seem that unrequited.
And you two continued on, but it was all different. While studying before you were very goal oriented, but now, you found yourself lulling into easy conversation with Eddie, finding the time to be sidetracked by every question he asked you. And he felt it too, you were more open to him, more welcoming to his flirtatious teasing.
Instead of meeting at the library, he tried to catch you at your locker, or leaving class, just to have those extra moments to walk with you.
Your favourite part, was that it wasn't just two scheduled days anymore. He would seek you out everyday. He'd come join you in the cafeteria, just to ask you a million questions about your book but never let you actually read it and, "ignore all the great things right in front of you."
Even when the Hellfire club looked at him with questioning looks as he sat elsewhere, he just wanted to talk to you. They never said anything about it, they couldn't ignore the genuine smile across his face every time he spoke to you.
Today, you weren't anywhere to be found after class, so he made his way over to the library.
Everytime you studied, you guys were in study room two, so Eddie headed there without much thought. When he opened the door, two random students were in there, scared by the intrusion. He mumbled out a little apology and closed the door as quickly as he opened it, a little too loud, drawing a few eyes in the library.
He found you by the desk, whisper talking to the librarian. You were talking about him.
"...and Eddie in study room two."
"The study rooms are designated for the in school tutoring program, you know that."
"What's going on?" Eddie asked, smiling at your cute little angry face as you huffed and crossed your arms. The librarian left you two, after all, there was nothing she could do.
"They booked out our study room over me," you said. He didn't care about that at all, but his heart fluttered at the sight of you. You were just so fuckin' cute.
"We can just do it somewhere else," he said, putting a hand on your elbow to gently rotate you away from the desk. You let him lead you to an open table. He would admit, it left for less opportunity for him to flirt which he didn't like, and you'd have to whisper.
You started opening your books, and the librarians answer lingered in his mind. "Hey, aren't we in the tutoring program though?" And it made a wild blush flash across your cheeks, and he grin, thinking he found something. "Hey, what's got you blushin'?"
And that too made you blush. You whispered, "stop it," and tried to reel him back into the textbook, but he didn't bite.
"Hmm," he teased, leaning towards you with his fits under his chin, watching your features. "I don't know, I'm dyin' to know what makes those cheeks light up, I saved you, you know."
"My hero..." you mumbled, "I couldn't be in the program anymore if I took the job at the bowling alley," you admitted, wanting to sink into oblivion. "And I kept showing up so I guess they never reassigned you."
"Wait," he grinned, his eyes flashing down to watch as you sucked your bottom lip into your mouth. "You just wanted to see me bad enough to do it for free, huh?"
"Don't say it like that," you whispered, wishing you could sink into your clothes. Maybe get totally raptured out of here. If you blushed any longer you were sure that your cheeks were going to stain that way.
"Hey, c'mon," he said softly, hooking his finger under your chin to bring your gaze up to him. "It's cute, I appreciate it a lot."
"I just liked hanging out with you," you admitted, conjuring up a smile. He smiled back.
"Shoulda told me, we could've not been doing algebra this whole time." You laughed, and still he wouldn't look at any of the work. "Hey, let me take you somewhere else to study."
"Will we actually study?"
"I'm shocked by such a tone, sounds like you assume I have ulterior motives."
"Because I just know that you do!" you laughed, only to be shushed by the librarian. You two made your way out of the library anyway, "I've never been shushed before."
"I'm a bad influence," he mused, smiling at you.
He insisted on carrying your bag after you packed up your books, he only had his textbook and a beaten up notebook tucked under one arm. He would be happy to do this everyday, escort your wherever you needed to go, chauffeur you around town, he didn't care. He just wanted you to be safe and well taken care of.
"Where are we going?" you asked, when you realized he was leading you out of the school.
"Well, that depends on two things." Eddie stopped when you two were in the parking lot, right beside his van.
"What are those two things?"
"The first is; do you trust me?"
You looked at him for a second, and with a soft smile you answered, "I do."
"The second is; are you dying to kiss me as much as I want to kiss you?"
The blush on your cheeks was clear, and the anxiety in the back of his mind calling him crazy for asking was roaring. But you shuffled your shoe, and without looking at him mumbled, "I am."
Eddie smiled at what he heard. He dropped your bag so he could scoop up your face with both of his hands, cupping your cheeks lovingly and looking at you before leaning down to place his lips on yours. He kissed you like he'd been dying and you were the antidote. His lips were tender, but dominate. He tasted like stale weed and spearmint gum, and you were totally lost in him. The way his arms moved to your waist to hold you close, as if this was his only chance. As if when you parted it would be over.
By the end you were both smiling so much it was hard to kiss. When he finally had to seperate, he kept you close, sneaking a hand back onto your cheek, giving you something to lean into while you slowly regained your breath.
"Could kiss you all day," he whispered, leaning his forehead against yours.
You looked at him and nodded eagerly, biting your swollen lip. "Yes, let's do that."
He laughed, kissing you on the forehead a few quick times. "What's the rush, petal? We've got all the time in the world."

Falling in Love on the Fourth Floor - Part 7
Summary: Out of an act of desperation, you move in with a guy you kind of know who happens to have a really hot brother who lives next door.
Author’s note: eeeek I’ve had parts of this one in the drafts for AGES the middle section has been drafted for at least a month I swear and I’ve been sitting on it like 🧍‍♀️ waiting to share it. I think this is my favorite part so far (but not my fav overall 🥰)
(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Masterlist)
Tumblr media
Your day had been shit. Ever since that godsawful date Mor ambushed you with last night, you couldn’t stop yourself from wondering about Azriel and Nesta’s date. What they were doing, how things were going, if she was making him laugh.
Hell, you couldn’t stop thinking about their date while on your own date. The guy was good looking, and he wasn’t terrible, but there was nothing there between you two.
He also was very into cryptocurrency, a topic that quickly took over the conversation at dinner. A topic you did not encourage him to continue on. He somehow didn’t get that memo, insisting on walking you up towards the doors of your building when he was dropping you off, where you had made a lame excuse about going to bed early before ducking into your building.
You had followed the same path Azriel took only moments ago, continuing on to your own apartment. You open the door, finding a note on the fridge in Cassian’s messy scrawl.
Have fun.
He drew a winky face, and then several crude drawings on the post-it. The drawings made you groan, Cassian’s enthusiasm for your date further solidifying your nonexistent chance with his brother.
Of course Cassian would have Mor set you up after he found out about your little crush on his brother. You felt so stupid when you saw Nesta on their couch earlier today. You hardly spoke to Rhysand on the way to lab, your thoughts too flooded with how terribly you had read the whole situation.
Cassian probably told Mor all about your dumb crush and got her to fix you up tonight. Maybe Azriel had even mentioned your text to Cassian, asking him what to do about the annoying roommate who developed a crush on his brother.
Your chest hurts, but it was just a silly crush. You’ll get over it.
Eventually.
-
Azriel stood in the elevator, waiting for the doors to close as he looked at his phone, looking at the last message you had sent him Friday morning.
Wanna grab lunch tomorrow?
He hadn’t answered, his phone having been on silent all day to focus on finishing his work for the next week and the reception in the library not allowing messages to come through. He hadn’t seen the message until he woke up this morning, the timestamp seeming cruel.
Now he stares at it and wants to throw his phone. Missed opportunities, he supposes. But what would this lunch have looked like since you’re dating that dickhead from last night? Would you have had to reject him outright?
He can see your face contort in a smile as you tell him, “oh no, Az, I’m seeing someone.” Then you’d probably laugh about it with the dickhead.
He runs his hands down his face when he hears someone yelling, “hold the elevator please!” He juts out an arm on instinct, not noticing who it is. He sees you slip inside, the doors bumping against his arm, bringing him back to reality as he looks down at you.
Fuck.
A light scent of oranges fills the elevator, and he notes it’s likely from your shampoo. He pulls his arm from the door, allowing them to close, locking the two of you in the metal box.
You look up at him, eyes going wide, cheeks heating in embarrassment at the close proximity. You’re standing right in front of him, and you can smell his cologne, a scent of night-chilled air and cedar filling your nose. You take deep breaths, telling yourself that it’s okay, it was just a little crush.
On a very pretty, smart, and very kind guy.
Who smelled incredible.
You look down at your feet, unsure how to speak to him now that you knew he was dating Nesta. And not wanting to further embarrass yourself by flirting with him.
Gods, this was how you were going to die, you think, shuffling to lean against the rail. Azriel’s voice puts a halt to the spiraling of your thoughts.
“Nice date last night?” Azriel asks, trying not to let whatever he’s feeling bubble up. Your eyebrows shoot up, unaware of Azriel even knowing about your date.
Of course he knows, you think, Cassian probably told him he’d handle it.
“He spent the while night telling me about stocks and crypto and how he wants to be in Forbes 30 under 30,” you scoffed, “so no, it was not nice.”
The elevator starts moving, and his eyebrows shoot up. “So that wasn’t your boyfriend?”
You scoff, “hell no. Mor ambushed me yesterday. She told me to get dressed up and we’d go out and have a fun girl’s night, but when I showed up she texted me that she set me up instead.
“The worst part is Mor was so confident that she told Cassian about it, so he had stayed at her place last night to give me ‘privacy’. He even left crude drawings around the apartment to help the ‘atmosphere’.”
Azriel laughs as the elevator dings for the third floor. He feels his chest lighten, knowing you definitely weren’t seeing anyone. “Mor’s always been ambitious, hasn’t she?”
You laugh. “Maybe it was just a ploy for her to have sex with Cassian.”
You say it, but you know it’s not true. The real truth was they wanted to put you out there, help you get over the beautiful man standing next to you. They knew you didn’t have a shot, especially compared to Nesta. You’re brought back to reality, and decide to hurt yourself further.
“How was your date with Nesta?” You ground out, after a pause in your conversation. You needed to know so you can completely cut off your feelings for him. You needed him to pierce you with the final dagger.
His eyebrows arch up, and he looks at your expression.
Were you upset? You won’t meet his gaze, and you’re clenching your fists. Were you - jealous?
His mouth curls up at the thought, “uh it wasn’t a date. Nesta and I study together every Thursday night. We take a lot of the same classes. We did it last night instead because she was busy on Thursday.”
Your eyebrows raise in surprise, “so you’re not dating Nesta?”
He laughs, “absolutely not. No that’s an avenue I’d never go down. But there is some-“
His words die as you hear a screeching sound and the elevator stops completely, leaving you two stranded somewhere between the first and second floors.
“No - no, no, no.”
You start freaking out - elevators always gave you a bit of concern, their small dimensions making you feel cramped. You hit the button to open the door, jamming it with your finger. Realizing that it was fruitless, You pull out your phone only to remember that the elevator always has no service.
“Fuck,” you mumble, and your breaths start coming faster and faster, and you’re trying to remember your calming techniques, when you feel cold hands gently grab your cheeks.
“Hey, look at me.”
You look up, finding hazel eyes looking back at you. They’re etched with concern, not a trace of mockery in them.
“We’re okay. Breathe with me, can you do that?”
He grabs one of your hands, placing it on his chest so you can feel his breaths as they come in and out. Your eyes stay trained on his, not wanting to look away, wanting to get lost in the gold flecks you find there.
You start following the rhythm of his breaths, but he keeps talking to you in a soothing tone. You’re too focused on breathing to register what he’s saying, but you do register the soothing tone he’s speaking to you in. You could get lost in his voice, its deep timbre a melody in your ears.
Eventually you come back down enough to focus on what he’s saying and he’s telling you about his night - everything he did yesterday.
“Rhys texted me to get some trash bags on my way in, which is where I was coming from when I pulled up and found you with crypto douche.”
You smile, your first real reaction to his words since the elevator stopped.
“There she is,” he says, his finger tapping your cheek, “wanna tell me more about crypto douche?”
“He wants to be a landlord.”
Azriel snorts, “of course he does.”
“I didn’t even want to go on this date,” your eyes stay locked with his, the golden flecks calming you down. “But Mor has been begging me to go out with this guy for ages, and then she finally decided to ambush me by forcing it on me.”
“You know you can tell Mor “no”. It’s a complete sentence.”
“I know,” you sigh, “but she loves playing matchmaker, even though she’s awful at it. Usually once every other month I let her set me up, but she was just throwing a tantrum I wouldn’t let her set me up this time once I figured out the rouse.”
He doesn’t let himself linger on the fact that you haven’t let her set you up since meeting him. Coincidence, maybe. “Have any of them been successful?”
You blow out a breath, “uh, no. Usually I stay for an hour then leave. None of them have ever gotten a second date.” You pause, thinking. “In the words of the great philosopher of our time, “I’m a pathological people pleaser,” you chuckle.
“And who said that?”
“…. Taylor Swift.”
He looks at you, a chuckle on his breath, such tenderness in his gaze it shocks you a bit. “You should stand up for yourself more.”
“I’m… not really sure how. It’s kind of new to me.”
You look at your feet, but he taps your chin so you’ll look at him again. “I stood up to my parents, and it was the scariest thing I’ve ever done.”
You had tiptoed around the topic since your admission to Cassian the day you moved in, the wound still too raw to discuss with anyone other than Feyre. Mor knew some of the details, but not the whole story. You’re sure Rhys and Az knew that something happened with your parents, but you never let them know too much about it.
They didn’t know that your parents had told you that you became everything they had tried to avoid. That, despite everything they did for you, you didn’t turn out right.
You hadn’t told Mor because you knew she would have burnt down their house with them in it.
“It was scary, moving here with a guy I hardly knew.” His grip on you tightens slightly, and he’s hanging onto every word you say.
“But I don’t regret it. Not even when Cassian wakes me up at 6 AM with his singing.”
He chuckles, and he stills as you look into his eyes, your voice clear and strong.
“I don’t… I don’t regret any of it. I don’t regret meeting you.”
His hands are still cupped on your face, his face mere inches from your own. Your confession hangs in the air as you two look at each other, and he leans closer, pressing his forehead to yours.
Your breathing hitches, but not because you’re stuck.
He opens his mouth to reply, but the elevator comes back to life, moving downwards again. It startles both of you into jumping away from each other, and you clear your throat.
“Where are- where are you going?” You ask, gesturing towards his helmet.
“Oh, uh Cassian forgot his lunch and doesn’t have time to grab anything between clients. I was going to bring him something.”
The air is lighter between you two, and Azriel feels like he can breathe you in again. The fog of confusion has lifted between you two, leaving you to be seen clearly by him.
“Do you want to get lunch?”
He echos your previous text message to him, and you nod.
“Yeah I’d love that.”
You stroll through the lobby, putting as much distance between the falter elevator and yourselves. Once you make it to the parking lot, Azriel places his spare helmet on your head, tapping the top of it lightly affectionately.
You zip your jacket up as Azriel gets on the bike first, his thighs straddling the seat. He holds the bike steady, allowing you to place your hands on his shoulders for balance, letting go of your fears as you swing your leg around to straddle the bike behind him. Your body leans against his, wrapping around him, holding onto him.
You place your head on his back, your fingers clutching onto his jacket. It feels new, electricity crackling through every inch of you that is in contact with him, despite the layers and helmets that separate you.
He chuckles at the gasp you let out when you two start moving, how your hands hold onto his jacket a little tighter than before.
He pulls a hand away to place it gently on one of the hands you have clutched to his jacket, squeezing three times before moving his hand back.

Whoever said group projects got easier in college don’t know what they’re talking about. If anything, group projects were the bane of your existence—the reason why you considered dropping out every semester. Being in your third year, you were just barely surviving the group project epidemic. This semester, however, had you at your wits end. All because of a stupid assigned group project.
You had an affinity for being a perfectionist. You were all work and no play. While many of your peers thought it was infuriating, you saw it as your best feature. You got things done. You couldn’t say the same for everyone else. A stick in the mud, a hardass, whatever they chose to call you didn’t matter at the end of the day.
“I’m telling you Nat, they’re imbeciles. The entire time we were exchanging contact information, I thought my head was going to explode from the idiocy spewing from their mouths.” Sitting in the busy dining hall, you rant to your best friend Natasha Trace of the absolute horrors of group mates you’ve been given for this assignment.
You met Natasha at a student mixer in your first year of university. The two of you hit it off immediately from bonding over your tastes for cheesy romance novels and an overly concerning obsession for Dr. Pepper and Smarties. Since then, you two became thick as thieves and haven’t looked back since.
“Maybe you’re being a little too quick to judge,” Nat counters, playing on the remaining peas on her plate with her fork. “You haven’t even given ‘em a chance yet.” That was Natasha for you, ever the voice of reason for your dislike of any person who wasn’t the three you were friends with.
You roll your eyes and cross your arms across your chest with a pout. “If you met them, I bet you would be saying the exact same thing. Besides, they’re frat guys. Isn’t that reason to hate them enough?”
“Why didn’t you lead with that? What’re their names? We can get Mickey to stalk them on Instagram or something.” Her eyes light up at the idea. She doesn’t even give you the chance to answer as she pulls out her phone, no doubt to text Mickey if he could do her a favor.
Mickey Garcia was another one of those close friends of yours. You met him at a Halloween Party where he showed up dressed as Poe Dameron from the later Star Wars movies. Your affinity for Star Wars and a love for Oscar Isaac drew you to him, eventually earning him the affectionate nickname of Fanboy. You introduced him to Natasha and the rest was history.
You swat at her hand, silently telling her to drop her phone. “No. We are not stalking them on Instagram.”
The sound of her text tone going off makes you groan. “Too late. Mick already said he’d do it. So, what are their names?”
You shovel another spoonful of mashed potatoes into your mouth before begrudgingly responding. “Bradley and Jake.” Their names taste like acid in your mouth. So what if you were being a little too quick to judge? You’ve done enough group projects to know this would end up being yet another you would be doing all by yourself.
Natasha’s quiet as she types up their names and sends them back to Mickey. Barely five minutes passes when she receives a response back. “Is this them?” She shows you her screen and at this point, you’ve learned not to question how Mickey could have possibly found them in the sea of Jake and Bradleys that go to your university–let alone pick out the right ones. You nod and she laughs, scrolling through her phone before moving to the seat next to you. “What did I tell you? He found their Instagram, Twitter, and Tinder profiles! God bless, Mickey Garcia.”
You push your head against hers, curiosity killing all resolve you had of not caring. The two of you go through their Instagrams and tagged posts like you were reading the morning paper. There wasn’t anything too surprising about them. It was everything you would expect from a twenty something year old guy in a college fraternity. You hated to admit, however, that they were attractive. You were probably too irritated in class to pay attention to how good looking they are. But that doesn’t dismiss the fact that you were still dreading to work with the two.
“See?” You tell Natasha, motioning to the photo she has pulled up of Bradley on one of his fishing trips. “They are grade-A assholes. Everything about them screams douchebag.”
“You gotta admit, they’re hot,” she breathes and you smack her on the shoulder.
“Natasha Monica Trace!”
Nat shoves you back before shrugging. “What? Don’t you agree?”
“Of course I do, but may I remind you that looks do not equal brains.” You snatch the phone from her grasp and exit out of Instagram.
Nat places a gentle hand on the crook of your elbow, noticing the tension in your body. “Just give them a chance, babe. What’s the worst that could happen?”
_______
You didn’t think it was possible to be friends, let alone acquaintances with Delta Chi’s favorite heartbreakers. Three months and two parties later, you found yourself tolerating your fellow project partners. Then the impossible happened. Bradley Bradshaw and Jake Seresin proved your first impression of them wrong. Well, Bradley did. Jake was the preppy douchebag you suspected him to be. He sat back while Bradley and you pulled his weight. You hated him and his dimpled, Hollywood smile. You hated those lips that knew exactly what to say to get anyone in a three foot radius on their knees. Not to mention those annoyingly green eyes of his.
Once the project was complete you thought you’d never have to interact with them ever again. Oh, how wrong you were. If only you hadn’t offered up your apartment to complete the assignment. Then they wouldn’t have met Nat, Mickey, and Bob. They wouldn’t have invited them to their stupid frat party. You wouldn’t have been forced to see them outside of scheduled study time and your friends wouldn’t have fallen perfectly in line with theirs.
Though you will admit, they weren’t all bad. Surprisingly, you actually appreciated most of their company. Underneath Bradley’s frat boy personality, was a secretly brainy political science major and one of the sweetest people you’ve ever met. His other friends, both from Delta Chi, also became fast additions to your little group. Javy Machado and Reuben Fitch were charmers and they knew it. But they were kind and didn’t have an obnoxiously large ego that most frat boys had.
You loved them all, but you couldn’t stand Jake Seresin. No matter how badly he tried to get on your good side, you wouldn’t have it. You weren’t going to give him the satisfaction of being another person to fall victim to his charm.
“Well Ace, you’ve somehow managed to ruin the fun. Again,” Jake deadpans from where he sits across from you at the coffee table. He bet that you couldn’t beat him at a round of chess. You took that challenge and beat him in three rounds.
A smug smile overcomes your features as you get up from your criss-crossed position and do a little happy dance at Jake’s obvious disappointment. “Snooze, you lose, Hangman.”
He groans at the appointed nickname you gave him two weeks into knowing him. Jake had been bragging about his latest sexual escapades and Bradley said something along the lines of him leaving his catch of the day hanging, disappearing before morning. The nickname stuck and became universally used within your friend group.
You miss the slight upward tug of his lips when you turn around and head to the kitchen to grab another bottle of water.
Bob, who had been observing each match and quietly serving as referee, broke Jake out of his reverie. “You went easy on her.”
Jake avoids Bob’s inquisitive stare and focuses on the faded chessboard. “No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did,” he quips, matter of factly. “I’ve seen you play against Bradley. You’re better than that.”
“Well, maybe I didn’t want her to feel bad for losing,” He shrugs, nonchalantly.
“Or maybe you just like seeing her win.”
Jake chucks the pillow he was sitting on at Bob, quickly shutting him up with a squeak. You make your way back to the table, eyeing the two boys at their strange behavior. “You up for one more round, Seresin?”
He checks his watch. “Can’t. Have a thing with Sarah tonight.”
The information makes your heart drop just a little bit in your chest, but you regain your composure. You clear your throat and harden your features. “Oh. Have fun at your…thing.” He didn’t have to tell you it was a hookup for you to know it was a hookup. He had “things” every week, which is why you didn’t understand why this time hurt you just a little more.
The room is silent after Jake leaves with you washing the dishes while Bob sits and reads on the couch. You anxiously looked to the clock that was incessantly ticking away on the wall, desperate for Natasha to get home. You loved Bob, but right now you needed to have some girl talk.
You exasperatedly sigh, harshly wiping your palms on the dish rag on your shoulder.
Bob hums, silently questioning what the matter was.
“Did Nat say when she was coming home?” You throw the rag on the counter and plop yourself down beside him. “I tried texting her but she hasn’t responded.”
Bob thinks for a minute, then responds, “Nope.”
“Well how long is it gonna take her to run this damn errand?”
One thing about Bob: he was a shit liar. The tips of his ears immediately got red and his blue eyes never had the guts to meet those he was lying to.
“Bob…” You scoot closer to him, noticing the tell tale signs of his dishonesty.
“What?” His voice cracks and so does his last bit of dignity.
“When’s Natasha coming home?”
One look into your narrowed eyes is all it takes to have Bob breaking his resolve. “Alright, fine. She said she was going to be out past dinner.”
“Why?”
The frown on your face almost breaks his heart. “She–well…” He hated lying to you, especially when you looked at him like that. Your little pout and wide eyes had him cursing silently. “She went on a date.”
“Oh.” Your brows screw up in confusion. “Then why didn’t she just tell me?”
Bob cringes. “Don’t tell her I told you, otherwise she will kill me.”
You hold your pinky out to him with a small smile. He links his with yours and the two of you press a soft kiss to your fisted hands before pulling away.
“Alright, fine. She didn’t tell you because she’s going on a date with Javy,” he rushes out.
You blink, processing the information. You and Nat told each other everything. Why did she feel the need to hide this from you? You voice your thoughts out loud and Bob shakes his head.
“She thought you were gonna blow up at her for going out with him. You know, because he’s Jake’s best friend and all.” Bob watches you cautiously. Your temper was unpredictable sometimes. One second you would be fine and the next you would be blowing your top off. He wasn’t sure which side of you he was going to get this time.
A sniffle leaves you and you wipe at your nose with the back of your hand. “Why would I get mad at her for that?”
“Because you haven’t had the kindest of opinions towards women who date frat guys, especially Delta Chi ones.”
You vaguely recall that conversation. You had called those women “airheads who are addicted to sex.” But you didn’t mean it. You were drunk and bitter about the fact that you were in your third year of college and still single. Had you known Nat wanted to go out with Javy, you would’ve kept your big mouth shut. “But I like Javy,” is all you can say.
Bob nods. “Yeah, but you hate Jake.”
Your gaze snaps back to him. “So?”
“So, she thought going out with him was like… I don’t know. Fraternizing with the enemy?”
“But Javy’s my friend. I don’t care about how close he is to Hangman. He isn’t like him,” you huff. Pulling your knees to your chest, you take a deep breath. “If he makes her happy then…she should go out with him. I just wish she told me.”
Bob wraps his arm around you, tugging you so your head could rest on his shoulder. He knew there was more to this than you let on. But he let it slide, choosing to comfort you in your conflicted feelings. “When Nat gets home, you should tell her that.” “I will,” you murmur into the fabric of his sweatshirt.
He presses a soft kiss to the crown of your head. “Good.”
It’s at that moment that the apartment door swings open, revealing Mickey with Jake in tow. Your head snaps up and you see Jake standing there with his mouth agape.
Mickey nods at you and Bob in quick greeting before pointing a thumb at the man behind him. “Idiot forgot his jacket again. It’s a good thing he caught me in the parking lot.”
You laugh awkwardly, stiffening in Bob’s hold.
You feel his arm drop from around your shoulder as he clears his throat, looking away from Jake.
“Sorry,” Jake’s voice is rough and there’s a look in his eyes that you can’t quite place. “Didn’t mean to interrupt.”
Bob waves him off. “It’s all good. You weren’t interrupting anything. Right, Ace?”
You can only nod dumbly, still not taking your eyes off of Jake’s vibrant green.
Jake clicks his tongue to the roof of his mouth. “Alright. Well, thanks again for letting me in, Mick. I’ll um, catch you guys later I guess.” He steals one last look of you snugly wrapped up in Bob before rushing out the door with a small shake of his head.
Jake doesn’t speak to you for a week after that.
_______
The tune of Slow Ride hits your ears and you groan into your cup. Bradley looks at you in amusement from where you sit beside him on the stairs. The boys had decided to unwind from yet another stressful week with yet another Delta Chi party. You were pretty adamant on sitting this one out, mainly because you didn’t want to see Jake or his new conquest of the week. Things have been tense to say the least. The fact that you and Jake didn’t get along wasn’t new to the group, however as the days passed, your nonstop bickering eventually turned to tolerance for one another. Enough to almost say the two of you were even becoming friends.
Jake still annoyed you to your core but his company somehow managed to grow on you. Which is why his sudden radio silence upset you. It got to the point that you couldn’t even look at him without seeing red.
“This is stupid,” you grumble, taking another swig of the cheap beer in your cup. You hated these parties. Normally, your friends wouldn’t mind you opting out to stay home instead. However Nat had noticed how your sour mood progressed throughout the week and concluded that you needed to get out to places that weren’t the lecture halls. She begged you to come with her to the party Delta Chi was throwing this weekend. For me? she pleaded, knowing just how much you hated saying no to her. Now that you were here, you longed to be back in the confines of your apartment, snuggled under your covers with a cup of tea and Emily Henry to keep you company.
Instead, you found yourself crammed in a two story frat house that was filled to the brim with sweaty and intoxicated bodies. The music was too loud and the smell of alcohol and weed was sure to be stuck on your clothes by the night’s end. The only thing keeping you sane was Bradley’s company and you knew that as the night progressed, even he would soon disappear.
“You want me to take you home?” Bradley asks, leaning down to your ear so you can hear him.
You shake your head, pushing at his shoulder. “It’s fine. Besides, I have a feeling you’re gonna get lucky tonight, Bachelor.” You nod towards the blonde in the corner of the room whose eyes haven’t left Bradley since the two of you migrated to the staircase.
He was practically drooling under the dimmed lights as he followed your motions. Bradley sends the girl a smirk before looking at you wordlessly.
“Go,” you urge him with a laugh.
He lets out a breath, downing the rest of his drink and giving your knee a squeeze. “Thanks. I owe you!”
You playfully roll your eyes. “Yeah, whatever. Be safe!”
Bradley winks at you over his shoulder. “Always am!”
The small smile on your lips fades as you watch Bradley go and flirt with the pretty blonde. You were never the center of attention, never the type that anyone gave their time of day to. You were average. Plain boring. The constant reminder of that was there when you hung out with the boys. You loved them, but hearing the way they talked about other girls did take a stab at your self esteem. You used to make fun of them with Natasha but then she started dating Javy, and became one of those girls. And you don’t blame them, your best friend was gorgeous. Anyone with eyes could see that. You convinced yourself that you liked the lack of attention and isolation. But every now and then, you wished someone saw you and thought, Wow. Now that’s someone I want to be with.
You push yourself off the carpeted stairs, deciding to find Reuben or even Nat and Javy. The cup in your hand is empty anyways. Might as well get a refill while you’re at it. You can barely move through the sea of people that are packed into such a small space. People were grinding against each other left and right, making you want to hurl. You push your way through the kitchen, finally making it to the open patio where beer pong tournaments and sloppy make outs occurred. The cold, night air feels nice against your hot and sweaty skin. You close your eyes, leaning up against the wall and drown out the music and laughter around you. Peace. You just needed a moment of peace.
You’re too caught up in your own little bubble to notice the presence that saunters up beside you.
“What’s a pretty thing like you doing out here all alone?”
The voice startles you from your moment and your eyes snap open. A hand reaches up to your racing heart and you turn to meet the source of your sudden adrenaline rush. The man beside you is familiar, you’ve seen him once or twice on campus and at other Fraternity events the boys had invited you to. Not to mention, incredibly good looking as well.
He holds a hand up, almost like he was trying to calm a rattled horse and sheepishly smiles. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”
You swallow, sharply exhaling and squeezing your plastic up in your hand to ground yourself. “It’s alright.” You avoid his gaze and nervously pick at the chapped skin of your lower lip.
“Billy Avalone,” he introduces himself with a confident grin. “I think I’ve seen you ‘round with Seresin and Bradshaw.”
You finally look up to meet his gaze and offer him a dry smile. You offer him an introduction of your own. “Nice to meet you.”
Billy ever so smoothly scoops up your free hand in his and places a soft kiss to the upside of your hand. Your cheeks heat up at his delicate touch and your knees almost buckle at the glimmer in his eyes. “Trust me, the pleasure is all mine.”
His manners make you chortle and you snort, pulling away from him to hide behind your smirk behind your palm.
Rather than drawing away from you, he finds himself intrigued and raises a brow at your amusement. “What?”
“Nothing, nothing,” you say in between laughter. You grasp your cup with both hands before looking at him with a much more genuine smile on your face. “It’s just… You are not what I expected from a Delta Chi.”
He nods knowingly, remembering your association with Jake and Bradley. “What can I say? I’m full of surprises.”
There was that ego you were looking for. But it doesn’t deter you like it normally would, in fact you find yourself leaning into him. “Oh yeah? Like what?” You shut your mouth immediately after that, quite surprised by your sudden burst of confidence.
Billy leans into you just as much, letting his hand brush against your forearm. It sends a shiver down your spine and goosebumps arise on your bare skin. “Nice try, but that’s to be revealed only if you agree to go on a date with me.”
There was no malice in his tone, no laughing idiots around to signify that anything about this was a joke. The look in Billy’s eyes was full of genuine hope and for the first time that night, you find yourself forgetting all about Jake Seresin and immerse yourself in the idea of Billy Avalone. He was charming and attractive. Lean, but broad enough for you to tell that underneath the jacket he wore was all muscle. You found it hard to believe that Billy had any interest in you and yet, here he was, asking you out on a date. Any other day, you would’ve taken a hard pass. You would’ve told him to move along and put his energy into another person who would consider saying yes. But then you think of Nat and Javy and just how utterly lonely you feel, deciding that Billy was worth the chance and the risk.
You open your mouth to respond, but stiffen at the feeling of warmth that encapsulates your back. You don’t need to turn to know exactly who it is. The familiar scent of laundry detergent and cinnamon washes over you and you resist the urge to fall into him.
“Billy,” Jake greets, his voice dropping an octave as he leans in closer to you. His chest just barely brushes against your back sending a new wave of warmth to your neck and cheeks.
“Hey, Jake.” Billy’s gaze flicks to Jake’s before he focuses his attention back on you, still eagerly waiting for your response.
Your breath hitches in your throat at the feeling of Jake’s hand on your lower back and you turn to look at him with furrowed brows. His usually well kept hair was stuffed under his backwards baseball cap and despite the chill of the night air he was in nothing but a t-shirt and jeans.
The air between the three of you is heavy as Billy tries to dismiss Jake’s presence. “So, what do you say about that date?” He smiles at you sweetly, rocking back and forth on his heels.
Before you can utter a response Jake steps in front of you and blocks you completely from Billy’s view. “Let’s get out of here, Ace.”
You can’t believe what you’re hearing. You scoff, balling your hand up in a fist to resist the urge to slap the back of Jake’s perfect head. “Excuse me? Seresin, will you knock it off?”
He ignores you, taking a step closer to Billy. Jake straightens his spine. “She’s off limits. Got it, Avalone?”
“Well, shit, Jake. If that’s your girl, why didn’t you just say so?” Billy gives you an apologetic look from over Jake’s shoulder.
Jake huffs, almost like an angry bull. “Off. Limits.”
You frown, adamantly shaking your head. “Wait, Billy. I am not his girl.”
“No, it’s alright. I’m sorry I even asked. I’ll see you around, I guess.” He knew better than to pick a fight with Jake Seresin. His defeated gaze darts to the floor before he makes his way back into the house.
Your chest is heaving as you watch Billy walk away. You don’t know whether you want to cry or scream more. You decide on the latter, not deeming Jake worthy of your tears.
Jake turns to face you, still smiling proudly to himself. His face slightly falls when he meets your eye. He knows well enough that you were not happy. “Ace?”
You push at his shoulders. “What the fuck, Hangman?”
He holds his hands up in surrender. “Hang on–”
The palm of your hands make contact with his broad shoulders once more. “Are you kidding me?” You shove him again but Jake’s hardened features don’t falter. “Who gave you the right? Someone was finally interested in me and you just had to drive them away. Your ego really couldn’t handle the fact that I was getting attention. Is that it?”
“Ace, wait.” He tries to reach for you but you slap his hand away.
“No, fuck you, Seresin. You can’t…” Your resolve breaks and the tears that sat on your lash line spill over. “You can’t just ignore me for a week only to talk to me after chasing away the one chance of a boyfriend I’ve got. That’s not fair.”
“You don’t understand. Billy isn’t good enough for you.”
“Yeah?” You look at him with tear stained cheeks. “Then humor me. Who is?”
Jake’s words get caught in his throat as he watches you wipe your tears away with the palm of your hand. He wanted to take your face in his hands and brush those tears away. But he knew you wouldn’t let him.
“That’s what I thought.” You brush past him, knocking his shoulder with your own. “I’m not like the other girls you mess around with. I know that. But that doesn’t mean I don’t deserve to feel wanted too.”
He calls after you, realizing just how horribly he screwed up. But you continue on back inside, probably trying to find Nat or Reuben to take you home. He knew that you weren’t like the other girls. You were different, you were better. You were everything he wanted and more. From the moment he met you, he was hooked. It scared him at first. You were the complete opposite from the girls he usually set his sights on. You were hard headed, independent, unafraid to call him out on his bullshit. You challenged him and he liked that. You weren’t shallow like everyone else and you made him feel seen.
He never thought a group project would lead him to you. You iced him out at first, and admittedly he knew he deserved that. Then he got to know you and he realized he never wanted to stop. Jake wanted to be the one on the receiving end of your jokes and the affection you gave to those close to you. He dropped his asshole attitude and made the effort to get you to see the real Jake Seresin. And it worked. He was doing so well to finally get you to let your guard down around him. Yet all that work, all that progress, went down the drain because he couldn’t keep his emotions in check.
By the time Jake caught up to you, you were dragging Natasha out the door with Javy on your tails. His heart dropped to his stomach and he wished he could turn back time to one week ago. Before he hurt you and made you cry.
_______
Your goal was to forget Jake Seresin ever existed. You threw yourself into your work, locking yourself in your room and spending more time in the library than your own apartment. Now that Nat was officially with Javy, the boys were around more often and you just weren’t ready to face him yet. It wasn’t fair to everyone else, you knew that. But it was easier for you to push them away. You turned back into that academic machine you were before Bradley and Jake forced you out of your shell. You didn’t party, didn’t go out, didn’t join the gang for movie night. Your new friends were your coursework. And when that ran out, you turned to your favorite show reruns for comfort.
You ignore the series of knocks on your door for the third time tonight. Natasha sighs in defeat, turning back to the group with a shake of her head. “I told you. She’s not coming.”
Reuben frowns. “Did you tell her Jake wasn’t coming with us?”
Everyone was aware of your complicated relationship with Jake. The small dance the two of you did was obvious to everyone but yourselves. It was only recently that Jake finally admitted why you’ve been hiding yourself away. If it weren’t for Javy holding her back, Natasha would’ve tore Jake to shreds.
“I did.” Natasha knew you and she knew you were embarrassed for lashing out at Jake the way you did. Hiding was the safest way to avoid facing yet another humiliating confrontation about your behavior.
You’ve never spoken to Nat directly about your insecurities, but she saw them in the little things you did. Not bothering to wear extravagant makeup or clothing, putting up a hard front, and pretending not to care. Deep down she knew you cared about how you were perceived. You did care whether or not people found you desirable. You wanted the cliche, movie romance. You wanted someone to sweep you off your feet, just like Westley in The Princess Bride.
Never, have you let those insecurities break your spirit. Until now. She has never seen you so small. She didn’t understand how Jake Seresin managed to knock you down with just one hit.
But it has been nearly two weeks since the party and Natasha was done with your groveling and self pity. You were going to get out of your room and you were going to have fun.
“Just give her a second,” Reuben whispers, having just a little bit of faith left in you.
It was as if you felt the little piece of hope Reuben had left for you because suddenly, the door of your room swings open and a breath of relief leaves both of your friends. You had decided to come out and join them after all. Nat had told you it was just a casual hangout amongst your friends, bar Bradley and Jake. You settled on changing into an oversized Naval Academy sweatshirt you had thrifted and an old pair of faded jeans.
Nat hadn’t seen you in anything other than pajama tees and sweatpants so to her, this was a big win.
Reuben smiles widely at your appearance before coming up to you and gathering you into his arms. “There you are.” His words and affection pulls an unexpected giggle out of you, soothing Reuben and Nat’s nerves. “How’ve you been, Ace?”
You shrug, shifting in his hold as he keeps an arm around you. “I could be better. But I guess I could be worse too.”
Natasha hooks your arm with hers, taking you from Reuben’s grasp. “You ready to go? Javy is waiting in the car with Bob and Mickey. I was thinking we could go to The Hard Deck using your car. You know, like old times.”
That brings a ghost of a smile to your face. The Hard Deck was a place of refuge for you and your group of friends, despite it being a Navy bar. You and Mickey found it by accident, stopping over at the nearest institution because he had to use the bathroom really badly on a drive back to campus. The bartender, Penny Benjamin, was sweet and treated you all like her own children. You haven’t seen her in awhile and just knew a visit to your spot was long overdue. “Yeah, I’d like that.”
The drive to the bar brings a bit of your old spark back. Natasha had the windows rolled down while the two of you belted out your favorite songs at the top of your lungs. She filled you in on all the things you missed from the past couple of weeks, strategically leaving out any anecdotes involving Jake. Though, Nat hasn’t seen him much since the party. It seemed as if he was taken over by the spirit of an old Delta Chi member. He was slumming it with the sorority girls and stayed out late partying with the other guys of his Frat. Bradley had tried to snap him out of it, but he reverted to his old ways. Back to before they met you.
Upon arriving at The Hard Deck you exchange a round of pleasantries with the rest of your friends who were glad to see you finally out of, as Mickey had called it, your “Bat Cave.” You volunteered to grab some drinks for the rest of the party while they settled in your usual booth in the back.
You returned to the table with beers for the guys, a club soda for Bob, a Mai Tai for Nat, and a lemonade for yourself. The night was spent full of laughter and warmth as you found yourself slipping back into your natural groove of things. Soon, your once dampened mood started to dissipate.
“I’m telling you, there’s something going on with Professor Mitchell and Penny,” Mickey slurs.
The group erupts into chaos then, one talking over the other and you can’t help but laugh as you lean into Mickey’s side. You missed this. You were so hard headed that in the process of blocking one person out, you put it upon everyone else. But you were here now and he wasn’t. That’s all that mattered to you.
Reuben is the one to calm the group down. “Alright, alright. You’re saying, P. Mitchell and Penny are… romantically involved. Where the hell did you get that idea?”
“DnD club meets here on Tuesdays and coincidentally so does Professor Mitchell,” he shrugs.
“Did you say DnD club?” Javy’s wheezing between breaths and Natasha has to slap him on the chest to get him to stop.
Mickey rolls his eyes. “I have a life outside of you guys, you know.”
“Yeah, but DnD club?”
“What’s wrong with DnD?” Bob chimes in, slightly offended.
Nat slaps him again. “Javy!”
“Right, sorry. Please, continue.”
“Actually, I don’t think I want to,” Mickey narrows his eyes at the man.
“Mick, he was joking. Please finish what you were saying.” You tap him affectionately on the shoulder with a gentle smile.
He attempts to continue his story when a smack to the tabletop catches all of you off guard. You tear your gaze from Mickey to be met with Bradley Bradshaw clad in one of his signature Hawaiian shirts as he leans against the table.
You give him a pained smile, knowing that where Bradley went, Jake wasn’t far behind.
“Good to see ya, Ace,” Bradley nods.
“You too, Brad,” you tell him softly. And you meant it.
The group falls uncharacteristically quiet and you feel Natasha give your knee tight squeeze.
“Didn’t know the gang was getting back together.” The familiar snark of the one person you didn’t want to see rings through your ears. Jake Seresin struts over with that stupidly cocky grin of his and unsurprisingly, another sorority girl on his arm.
No longer caring for pleasantries with the man, you roll your eyes. You hate to admit that it stung to see him with yet another woman. A small part of you hoped that maybe he’d show up empty handed and acknowledge your presence. That didn’t happen and it felt like a knife to the chest. What did you expect? Of course, nothing has changed since the last time you saw him. While you were feeling worse than ever about yourself, Jake had absolutely zero cares in the world. He only cared about himself, he always would.
Javy was the only one who had the stomach to greet him with a simple, “Hey.”
He chuckles, almost mockingly, as the girl on his arm tries to gain his attention and pull him to the bar. “Why weren’t we invited to the party?”
“Because no one wants you here, Bagman,” Natasha spits.
Jake brings a hand to his chest, acting hurt at her insinuation. “You wound me, Natasha.”
She gives him the finger in response.
“Now does everyone not want me here? Or is there a certain someone who doesn’t want me here?” He raises a brow and his bright green eyes land on you.
You avoid his gaze and you hear Bradley hiss Jake’s name.
“What? I’m just saying. It’s pretty obvious someone didn’t want me here and we all know who.” Jake doesn’t care that the girl who had been hanging off of him moments ago found someone else to play with, abandoning her post to flirt with another guy over at the pool tables. He had your attention and to him that was enough.
You feel a familiar sting behind your eyes, knowing damn well he was just toying with you at this point.
“Stop.” This time it’s Javy who speaks up, surprising Jake. “If you only came over here to be a dick then I suggest you leave.”
The light mood from earlier has completely died and you know that once he leaves, nothing can bring it back.
“Ace.”
He calls you out directly this time and you can’t hold it in any longer. All the hurt and anger he caused bubbles up to the surface. Part of you wants to talk to him, clear the air up a bit and give him a chance to apologize. The other part of you, the more rational part, decides to ignore him entirely.
You quietly ask Natasha if you could pass and her and Javy get up to stand to the side to let you through. You purposely angle your body so your back is towards Jake, announcing that you were going to get another drink before heading in the direction of the bar.
Jake moves to follow you, only to be stopped by his best friend.
Javy grabs his wrist with a disapproving frown. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Let go, Javy,” he absent mindedly demands. His eyes never leave your figure as you make your way through the crowd.
“No. You’re being an asshole, man. What happened to the guy who was repeatedly texting me to make sure she was okay? I told you where we were because I thought you were going to apologize. Not do… whatever that was.” Disappointment shines in Javy’s deep brown eyes.
Bradley slides into the space where you once were, watching what was about to unfold with the rest of them.
“Wait a minute, you told him we were going here? Javy!” Natasha looks at her boyfriend in disbelief.
“I’m sorry! This idiot told me he wanted to make it up to her.” He gestures blindly to Jake who was running a hand through his already disheveled hair.
Natasha snorts. “Unbelievable,” she swears under her breath.
“Nat–” Jake starts, but she cuts him off in an instant.
“No. You stay away from her, got it? She’s had enough of your games, Seresin, and quite frankly so have I.”
“I messed up. I know I did. But please, please just give me a chance to explain.”
He takes Natasha’s silence as an unspoken truce. “I care about her. So much that it scares the shit out of me. I was gonna tell her, you know. Then I saw her with Bob and I realized that she could do so much better than me. So I did what I do best. I pushed her away.”
Bob flushes red at the mention of his name.
“What is there to say about myself other than that I’m your typical, college fuckboy? The thing is, I was fine with that reputation. I was good at doing things on my own. Then I met Ace and I realized she’s my antidote. That girl gave me tunnel vision. Suddenly, I’m looking at my future and I want to do more with my life than be known as a college heartbreaker. The one thing I know to be true is that I want to be better with her by my side.”
“Why should I believe you after the way you treated her?” Natasha’s gaze narrows, still not fully convinced.
He swallows harshly. “You have every right not to. I wouldn’t believe me either. But you’ve got to understand that I never realized just how much she really meant to me until I almost lost her.” There’s a look of defeat that crosses his features, and his head falls to his chest.
Nat’s hardened stare falters ever so slightly. “To Billy. But wait, I don’t understand. What about that girl you came in here with?”
“Oh, she’s here for free booze. I needed to get Ace’s attention somehow.”
She rolls her eyes. “You’re an idiot.”
Jake nods, regret shining in his eyes. “I know. Listen, I’m not good at relationships.”
“Trust me, we know,” Bradley mutters under his breath.
Jake shoots him a quick glare before continuing. “I don’t know how to do them. For Ace, I’ll learn. I would do anything for her. Look, I know I’ve made mistakes and I need to fix them before it’s too late.”
Natasha was conflicted. She looks at Javy who meets her gaze with a soft smile. Then to Reuben and Bradley. Finally, her eyes land once more on Jake. She found herself in the same dilemma she was in before she started dating Javy. Their reputation precedes them. You were the one to warn her of Delta Chi’s womanizer ways. Yet she still gave Javy a chance and it was the best decision she ever made. She knew deep down that these guys had good hearts. No matter how much she wanted to deny it, she knew Jake did too. He was kinder with you, softer. You always brushed him off but Nat saw the way he affected you. He made you happy and you deserved to be. If she could give Javy that chance, shouldn’t she extend it to Jake too?
She groans with her head in her hands. “Fine. Fine.”
Jake’s eyes light up, clearly expecting another rejection. “Really?”
“Yes. But I swear if you hurt her again, if you break her heart, I won’t hesitate to kill you.”
His stomach churns at the thought, knowing full well that she meant it. “Yes, ma’am,” he salutes.
“Now go get her before it’s too late.” In other words, Natasha had finally given him her blessing.
Jake’s dejected state is replaced with one of determination. He mouths an appreciative thank you, before setting his sights on you.
“Forget DnD club, I need to hang out with you guys more often because that was better than a Netflix drama,” Mickey babbles, making Bob smack him lightly on the back of his head.
With her arms crossed, Natasha stares out the window wistfully. “I just hope he can make things right.”
Wrapping his arms around Nat, Javy gives her a reassuring squeeze. “Don’t worry, he’s got this.”
_________
“Hey Pen, can you just tell Natasha to ride home with the boys? I think I’m going to head out.” You place a wad of cash on the bar top, signaling for her to close your tab.
The woman frowns, noticing the bothersome frown on your face. “You sure, sweetheart?”
Downing the last of your lemonade, you nod. “Thank you, for the advice and everything.”
“Of course. Hey, don’t be too hard on yourself, okay?”
A tight smile pulls at your lips in farewell. You push your way through the rowdy crowd, breathing deeply once you make it outside.
You curse under your breath. You didn’t know it was supposed to rain tonight. You eye your car in the distance, deciding whether to make the trek or go back inside until it stops. The sound of the door opening behind you catches your attention and your heart leaps out of your chest.
“Ace,” Jake Seresin calls out, desperately trying to reach you.
You throw all caution to the wind and run out into the pouring rain, too exhausted to deal with him right now.
His shoes squeak and splash through the puddles on the asphalt. Not caring that he was soaked to the bone, he runs after you. Jake calls out for you again but you continue on. For once, he doesn’t find himself admiring your stubborn attitude.
You throw a quick glance behind you, hoping to see that you’ve lost him, but Jake’s strides are longer than yours and he has closed more of the distance between you two than you thought. A shiver racks your form and your clothes are sticking uncomfortably to your skin. You find yourself regretting your decision but there’s no way you can take it back now. You shove your hand into your pocket, frantically pulling out your car keys once you make it to your car.
Jake sees you shiver as you try to unlock your car. You just barely get the driver’s side to open when he comes up behind you and presses the door shut. Your back is to his front and he pleads for you to turn around.
You hear him before you see him. You don’t want to turn around. You can’t. You know the second you look into his opalescent green eyes, your resolve will shatter. “Get off, Jake,” you demand impatiently.
“Please look at me, please.” The desperation of his voice startles you. Never, have you heard Jake Seresin say the word ‘please,’ and never have you heard him beg.
You’re shaking as you wrap your arms around yourself for warmth. You bite into your bottom lip to stop it from trembling. From the rain or from the tears that have started streaming down your cheeks, you are unsure.
“Ace,” he breathes.
His breath is hot against the skin of your neck soothing you from the cold. But still, you don’t budge.
Jake finds himself getting frustrated and he runs his hand through his damp hair, moving it away from his eyes. He can barely see your reflection in your car window, his vision blurred from the raindrops that cloud his vision. But the pale moonlight and dim streetlamp shows him enough to see that you feel just as hurt as he does, if not more. “Fine. You don’t have to look at me. I just need you to listen.”
You say nothing.
He exhales through his mouth as he recalls what he wants to say. “Remember when we first met and you asked me if I actually had a brain or if I just thought with my dick? That was the moment I knew you were unlike anyone else I’ve ever met. Usually, I’d have girls swooning over me left and right, but not you. You weren’t fazed by me in the slightest and that intrigued me. Everything about you intrigues me. Which is why I was so eager to get more out of you. I poked fun. I made jokes. I made sure that your attention was almost always on me because when it was, it gave me the best view of each and every thing you had to offer. Like the way you bite your bottom lip when you’re trying not to cry.”
Your breath hitches in your throat from his words, heart going faster than that goddamn roadrunner.
“Come on, Ace.”
How could you deny him when he spoke with so much conviction? You spin on your heel to face him. He’s soaked, just as you are, and yet you think he has never looked so beautiful. As you look at him, the ache in your chest doesn’t subside and you sniffle from the cold. “What do you want, Seresin?”
“I’m sorry,” he chokes out.
You look away from him. “I don’t need your pity.”
“Hey, I’m serious. I know I hurt you and I will never forgive myself for it.”
There’s a sincerity in his tone that throws you off. “Then why? If you feel so bad about it, why did you do it?”
“Because… Because I…” He’s nervous. Of all the times he has ever spoken to you, this is the one time he has felt this way.
Your patience is wearing thin so you shake your head and run a hand down your face. You were so tired of him holding out on you. “You know what? All I ever wanted was for you to look at me the same way you look at those other girls. Why wasn’t I good enough for you?” Once the floodgates opened, it was hard to get them locked up again.
You might as well have ripped his heart out of his chest instead of saying that. The effect it had on him would’ve been all the same. “Oh, baby,” he cups your face gently between his calloused hands and strokes his thumbs across the apples of your cheeks. The rain made it hard for him to tell which marks were tears and which were rainwater, but he treated them all the same. “Those girls have nothing on my Ace. You are more than enough. You are everything and I was too blind to see it until now.”
“What?” You whimper.
God, does he want to kiss that pout right off your face. “I don’t look at you the way I look at everyone else because I don’t want them the way I want you.”
“And how is that, Jake?”
That alone gives him a glimmer of hope. His heart skips a beat and his stomach erupts in butterflies.“You called me Jake,” he grins. “You never call me Jake.”
You scoff, not realizing the name slipped. “Answer the question.”
“I want every part of you. I want late nights and study sessions. I want to be the first one you call and the last one you text goodnight. The good, the bad, all of it. As long as it’s you.”
The honesty in his gaze makes you want to believe him. Because that’s all you ever wanted from him. So bad. But he has hurt you one too many times. You don’t think you’d be able to take it if he did one more time. “How do I know you won’t hurt me again?”
Jake takes the leap, resting his forehead on yours. When you don’t pull away, he confesses, “You don’t. But I will spend every day proving to you that I’m never going to make that mistake again.” He brushes some of your damp hair away from your face and admires how ethereal you look in this light. “One date, Ace. Let me make it up to you.”
You relish in his warmth, the aching hurt in your chest finally subsiding. The raging storm in your heart is finally calm. “One date. That’s all you’re getting.”
The smile that spreads across his face is the brightest you’ve ever seen. He no longer feels lost now that he has you. “That’s all I need, darling.”
For once, you believe him.

Knew Better But Still Picked You pt 2

Part One Part three
Jackie has some rules set for the reader and Cole that might be hard for them to follow.
Tag list- send me an ask to be added @cognacdelights @connieisthesun @bbabycass
Cole shrugged some jeans up his legs while I tossed one of his tea shirts over my head. Tying my hair up in a messy braid. Jackie had stomped out of the bedroom and down the stairs clearly frustrated. “So how bad do you think she’s going to be about…us?”
“I have no clue. I’ve never seen her this concerned for me before since we’ve been friends forever.” I responded by slipping some socks on my feet sitting down on his bed.
Cole throws a blue tea shirt on coming over to me wrapping his arms around my waist tugging me to his embrace. “We could just stay upstairs for the day. To avoid my parents' possible wrath on both of us. What do you say?”
“Cole..” I warned him by draping my arms over his shoulders.
He leans down since he was taller than me, kissing me slowly. “How about now?”
“We can’t hide away.” I attempted to say while he kissed me again a little more passionately as if that would convince me and I hate to admit that it might be working.
The older Walter boy in front of me cupped my face in his hands. “The way you’re reacting says otherwise….jump.” I leaned into his embrace, moving my arms around his neck threading my fingers through his honey hair. He moaned when I did so and he moved his hands down where I jumped wrapping my legs around his waist but that’s as far as we got.
“Cole. Y/n, can you come downstairs now!” His father hollered where we broke the kiss.
Cole sighed and I could feel his muscles tense up. “Oh boy. Are you sure we can’t just sneak out the back door and go to the riverside?”
“Unless your parents don’t know about that place and Jackie’s phone has terrible cell service she’ll find us no problem. We have to go, Cole.” I explained to him running my right hand through his hair getting some of it out of his bright green eyes.
He lowered me to the wooden floor and planted a kiss on my forehead. We still held hands coming down the stairs until we reached the third to last step. His parents and my best friend were standing in the kitchen with angry looks on their faces. “You wanted to talk with us?” Cole stated calmly.
“Do you want to explain to us why Jackie is saying she wants us to forbid you two to be together?” His mother Catherine scowled hands on her hips.
Cole pretended to play like he was clueless. “I have no idea.”
“Me either.” I shrugged my shoulders following along with him.
Cole's father glared at his son. “Cole, don't joke around about this. We know Jackie isn't a liar. So I'd suggest you tell us the truth.”
“I don’t have anything to hide.” I replied.
Jackie stomped up, ending up in between us and the Walter parents. “Come on, you two. I know that you're lying to them. I saw you two laying in his bed this morning!”
“Okay, fine. Yes we were sleeping together in his bed. But not in the way that you think I swear.” Holding my hands up I figured it would be safer if we only lied about the horse riding and kissing last night between us.
His father glanced at his son, leaning against the fridge. “Cole, just tell us exactly what happened and your punishment won't be as bad since we already learned about you sneaking girls out of the house without our knowledge.”
“Which will never be acceptable in this house ever.” Catherine waved her index finger at him.
Cole dropped his gaze to the wooden floor and I felt him reach for my hand. I wanted to support whatever he was about to say but I still drew back keeping my hands clasped together in front of me. “Look you guys, I am not hooking up with Y/n. I just hung out with her last night and she didn’t want to wake New York up so she slept in my room with me.”
“Fine, if that’s all you're going to tell me then let's get onto the part that I came up with.” Jackie turned on her feet to the Walter parents. “Are you still open to the ideas that I came up with for going behind my back?”
Catherine shifted her gaze between us. “Jackie is very upset that you two lied to her about this. So we have decided that you two are grounded here for the evening.”
“What-” I gasped, never being grounded before in my life.
Mr. Walter leaned his palms on the island. “And if you don’t get all the chores done then you can't go to the homecoming prep rally.”
“I didn't want to go anyway. “ Cole shrugged his shoulders not fazed.
Turning my head in his direction I admit weakly. “I want to go. I've never been at anything like that in the city.”
“Oh…” Cole replied giving me a guilty expression.
Jackie moved forward grabbing my arm and dragged me out onto the porch so we could talk alone about this. “Jackie, this is ridiculous. We didn't sleep together.”
“But you did do something with him. I can see it in your eyes, Y/n. You're closer to him than you were a few days ago. He reached for your hand I saw it.” She throws her arms away from her sides.
Dragging my hands down my face I groaned at her. This was getting ridiculous that she is so concerned for my heart. “Jackie, I don't want to be having this conversation with you. You also had no right to involve his parents in this.” I appreciate it the support. But I haven't had a boyfriend yet so how was I supposed if he would be bad or good for me.
“If you just tell me what happened last night I'll go inside and tell them I overreacted. You just have to tell me the truth.” She crossed her arms over her chest.
Shoving my hands in my pockets I huffed. “I shouldn't have to tell my whole life story. You're supposed to just trust me since I'm your best friend and you consider me to be your sister.”
“If I consider you like family then there's no problem in telling me.” She pressed onward.
Stomping my boots into the gravel drive I snapped at her not being able to handle it anymore. “Urgh! You wanna know what happened between Cole and me…we kissed. We kissed after he took me horse riding to see the stars. That's what happened between us!”
“You freaking kissed him!” Jackie raised hee voice at the same time the front door opened and Cole walked past us seeing her death glare as he went straight for the barn.
Whipping my head around I ran toward the barn leaving my best friend ending our conversation with her. “Cole!” Leaning in the doorway with my hands on either side of the stall with his horse, he avoided my gaze brushing his horse.
“Hey Y/n.” He mumbled.
I opened the door coming to stand closer to him so he'd possibly look me in the eye. “Cole, please look at me. I didn't want to tell anything about last night. Last night was something that I wanted to be my own thing that no one could take away from me. But now she's made me put it out in the open.”
“It doesn’t matter that she knows about the kiss last night. I just don’t want to talk about it anymore we have chores to do.” He grumbled walking out of the stall and gently pushing me out of the way so he could lock the stall.
Spinning around in my boots I snapped back at him. “If you’re bring an ass to make my best friend right I don't like it. I already told you that I chose you when everyone else tells me I should stay away.”
“I'm not trying to make her happy. I am trying to stay away from you. But I can't avoid being around you.” Cole spun around on his feet getting close to me where there was almost no space between us.
I parted my lips eyeing the side of his jacket pocket where I knew he had slipped his keys inside before we went downstairs and clearly his parents didn't know. “Then let's run away somewhere they don't know about. Like Romeo and Juliet but obviously not dying.”
“Are you sure you're not a little afraid of any danger, Y/n?” He questioned me, focusing his green eyes.
Closing the gap I wrapped my arms around his neck pressing up against him as much as I could. “I'm choosing to be with you aren’t I Cole Walter. Danger can be my new middle name. So let’s run away for the night.”
“Running away isn't showing them I'm a good influence on you…But I don't want to be apart from you now.’ He declared looping my hand through his and he peaked around seeing that the lights in the house had been shut off meaning everyone was asleep. He led me to his truck and I climbed in hearing him Starr the engine racing away from the ranch.
Pulling out my phone I turned my location off knowing Jackie would track me. Leaning back in the seat I put my hand over his freehand. “You are honestly more fun then I'd thought you'd be, Cole.”
“I was thinking the same thing about you, Y/n.” He intertwined our fingers together and the rest of the drive through the night was comfortable silence with both our hearts racing with adrenaline and fear.
Comments really appreciated ❤️

[BatIM Cthulhu AU] A couple of doodles from session two, which UNSETTLED SAMMY A LOT ACTUALLY...
There have been small changes, throughout New York -- doors opening on the wrong side of the street, houses ending up just a block away from where you remembered them -- but the only people who can even tell seem to be those who remember Carcosa. Joey, Sammy, Henry, Jack, Peter, and Norman all experienced the strange shifting realm when a Mardi Gras party attempted to bring dread Carcosa to New Orleans, but Susie wasn't there. She can't see the changes we see, and the entire rest of the city agrees with her. That door was always there? The car was always that colour. That's where I remember the address being before, and there's no record it was ever different.
She trusts what the boys are reporting must be true, that maybe there are changes she can't see or remember, and both she and Sammy are terrified. These are only little things, but as more and more of the city slips into the world of the King in Yellow, what else might be rewritten...?
Anyway EVERYONE'S HAVING A GREAT TIME. If you're here for Out Of Context Quotes from our session, I have some of those too, here, under the cut!!
[Sammy is played by me, Joey is played by Boo (inkyvendingmachine), Henry is played by Maf (inkcryptid), Jack is played by Mochi (whatyouwantedmetosee) and Thren (haunted-hijinxer) is our GM!]
[Jack] I love how detective Pete is for a guy who is NOT a detective. [Sammy] He just got assigned that by Joey Drew and now it's true. [Joey] Exactly! That's how it works.
[Sammy] The idea of JDS having its own employed detective is really funny to me. "Why do you need that? You're an animation studio." "Well, you know, things come up,"
[GM] Everybody went home I believe, except Joey went to the Studio, which is like home,
[Sammy] Do we have any plan, other than just go in to work, [Jack] I though you were gonna say "other than go insane"...
[Joey] If Prophet's not the one going for the ink, then why is Sammy going for it?! Do they have a SECOND prophet situation??? [Jack] PROPHET...... TWO!!! [Henry] Prophet 2: Electric Boogaloo [Sammy] *tiredly* We don't need any more Prophets..... We don't need any more Sammys..... we have enough.....
[Jack] You just need to sip some ink and tell them it's the wrong number. Like, you've got the wrong guy. [Henry] New stone, who dis?
[Sammy] It was the false king who called through the ink, not our Lord! [Joey] Interesting... [Joey] Joey's going to ask Bendy if he can... feel this? Is he getting calls? *dad voice* Is someone calling you? Don't put your number on the internet!
[GM] Bendy says he wasn't made to be a receiver the same way Sammy was. [Jack] So technically, it's "New Sam, who dis"!
[Joey] Okay, Joey's going to note this all down in his... Notebook Of Nonsense That Plagues Them,
[GM] I'm choosing to believe that whenever Norman called in, he gave some sort of outlandish excuse, and whoever answered the phone didn't... write it down... [Sammy] Like the heckin', grian excuses-- [Joey] "I'm cutting my grass, with scissors" [Jack] Yeah!! He's cutting his grass! With scissors! In winter!!! [Sammy] And then Sammy's like "Do we know why he called out?" and the receptionist is just like "No We Have NO Idea" [Jack] With the most tired sigh. Second only to Grant.
[GM] Fun fact, Norman would answer the phone. [Sammy] Norman actually was just like, "ohhhhhhh i know THIS is some supernatural bullshit happening, I'm gonna stay home"
[Joey] Joey's going to ask Estelle if he looked like-- and give a vague description of Avedon. [GM] .............................. [GM] She is SO impressed that you knew this. [Joey] *delighted cackling*
[Jack] I love how cute Joey is about this kid. Just like... the cool Bendy Uncle! He's not related at all, but, [Joey] I feel like this is kind of how Joey just gets around kids? Maybe Joey does really want kids, just, y'know, doesn't know how to do it when gay? [Sammy] Obviously that won't happen, so-- [Joey] Yeah, [Sammy] --so then you START AN ANIMATION STUDIO, that's the only other option! [GM] Yeah, then all kids are your kids!
[GM] Alright, you've made many phone calls. [Joey] Yeah, [GM] And you only rudely hung up on one of them!
[Sammy] Sammy can surely track that down; he's used to digging up musicians. [Jack] Jack's there to assist with the Talking to People in a way that makes them want to cooperate with you, and not run in fear!
[GM, speaking for Peter] *lists all of the information Peter's dug up* And that's about what he managed to get, today! [Joey] And nothing weird has been happening... to him? [GM] WELL, OKAY. ABOUT THAT,
[Peter] Could you describe again, the strange person who was at the party? What was that guy like? [Joey] *thinking very hard* Which... strange person...? I mean... Denis was there?
[Norman] Try not to fall in a swamp this time. [Joey] I'll let you know if I find one! [Sammy] There's fewer of those in New York, so, I think we're good. [Jack] I mean, you never know,, [Sammy] ...yeah, that's true..... [Joey] HEY, Joey will let him know if he finds one!!! [Sammy] If LAKE PONCHARTRAIN opens up in the MIDDLE OF NEW YORK CITY, that will certainly be something to let all of our friends know!
[GM] Make a social-type checks to have a word with them beforehand! [Sammy] I don't know, if I should do that,,, [GM] SAMMY can make an Appearance check! [Sammy] *laughing* LETS SEE IF IM HANDSOME ENOUGH to get let in!
[GM] Everybody's like "You guys!" You're greeted with nostalgia, and eagerness! and people are trying to small talk you, I'm guessing Sammy's not going for that. [Sammy] I mean, you can try to small talk.... AT him... [Sammy] He doesn't... y'know... it's like playing a game of catch where you throw the ball to somebody, and they just hold the ball. [Sammy] Like.... okay! [GM] I did the thing! [Sammy] Cool, catch successful. [Jack] No give, only throw!
[Sammy] Look, I was trying to drink ink this morning, so I feel like this is a step up.
[Sammy] Sammy will enjoy it! We should do this more often! [Sammy] "We should do this more often" says man who will always be too busy to do this more often,
[GM] They're impressed that, at a job where there was a gunshot right in front of the stage, the thing you want to ask about is where they sourced their music. [Sammy] I LOVE that Sammy's reputation is such that this makes perfect sense to them.
[GM] His name is Alan Leroy. [Sammy] Okay, Leroy works, because then I'll remember it, because of Leroy Jenkins. [GM] This is what's been going through my head the entire time, too...
[GM] They say he's a crazy-talented musician who blew into town a year or two ago? He's really nice and easy to get along with, and when he really gets going he can make sounds come out of his instrument like you've never heard! [Sammy] These... are all.. compliments that would be really impressive except that they can all be interpreted in really concerning ways.......
[GM] If Jack wants to look harder, he can.......... [Jack] I'm doing it, Jack can make little a bad decision! He hasn't made any yet this season!! [Jack] *rolls* That's an extreme success. How much sanity do I lose!!
[Henry] We're ghost hunters. The, the pale guy is a ghost, we're goin' after him. Ghost hunters. [Henry] ...This is why you don't let Henry lead the conversation!!
[Jack] It's occurring to me that we don't know if this guy is alive??? [Joey] YUP! This is a good time to find out! [Henry] Fun! [GM] When have you EVER gone up to somebody's house and found them dead inside? [Jack] Jack hasn't yet... [Henry] The very first scenario! [Sammy] Yeah it was a pretty bad situation as I recall, we were briefly accused of being involved! [Jack] Maybe you guys. Jack's different, though.
[Joey] We wanted to make sure he was doing alright. .....does that need a Fast Talk roll? [GM] Yeah, I was about to say-- [Joey] *rolls* *STARTS CACKLING* [GM] What did you do, do you roll a three again? [Joey] I DID ROLL A THREE! :D THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I ROLLED! [GM] I thought it was the Three Laugh!
[Henry] Henry is tired. Henry rolled a 93. [GM] Well he's out late, you know, he's a family man! He has normal hours, he hasn't been staying up late, living at the studio for the last few years! [Henry] He's regretting not accepting Joey's offer to just go home. [Joey] *muttering* See, Joey knows best!
[GM] Okay, so you guys notice, right off, that the car isn't there. [Sammy] UM. HM. [Jack] Which car did we take again? [Joey] The Mercedes... [Jack] *relieved* Okay good. [Jack] .... I MEAN, NOT GOOD, BUT...
[Joey] No, no I think it's OUR car... it's just... more yellow now... [Jack] I don't like that that means it's getting yellower... [Joey] ...........................So when do we take the sanity hit? [GM] Yeah, that would be now!
[GM] The woman says she's looking forward to when he has his own ship, and they can sail away together! [Henry] [Henry] ...I'm married,...
[Joey] Joey has his face pressed to the window-- no, he probably has the window down, it doesn't matter how cold it is -- and... CAN the window go down? Hold on. [Joey] *sounds of typing* "Car... door... window... down... history... when."
[Henry] Okay, these dice are BANNED. I rolled a 90! [Jack] What if you subtly replace the dice...? [Sammy] With slighty yellower dice!
[Joey] OKAY! There ARE rolling windows, so Joey does have the window rolled down, and he's intensely watching the colour of the car. [Joey] AND ALSO, he's STILL sitting in the middle seat, he's just going to lean over someone to do this. [Sammy] Ah. It's probably me.
[Jack] No, no, Pete and Jack can get kidnapped later and take some massive sanity damage together. ✨Cute date ideas!✨
[Joey] Joey's going to inform Norman that they're going to come over, they need additional eyes on something, [GM] Well, he's good at keeping eyes on things! [Joey] So they'll be over soon. [Sammy] I like how Norman gets a heads up, but with Peter we just show up at his apartment. [Joey] Exactly! [Jack] That's because Joey's kissed Pete. When Joey and Norman kiss then that's -- not good for Sammy, probably. [GM] At least Pete and Sammy are neutral. Non-reactive. [Sammy] Norman and Sammy are "it's complicated" on Facebook.
[Sammy] Okay, we gotta go get Linda, so Susie's not alone, [Jack] We're just playing "how many NPCs can we force Thren to play at once!" How many can we shove in the back of this car.
[Jack] Jack's gonna get home and find out his cats are different colours, [Sammy] Oh NO, [Jack] Comes back and Beans is a tortie now. [Sammy] Or Beans is just an orange cat, [Jack] Oh no! Her braincells! [GM] She needs those! She has all of them!!
[Joey] Depending on who's the affected party, Susie or them, it is actually useful to have a second, like, [Sammy] Someone to compare with? Yeah. [Henry] We don't know WHO the control group is, but ONE of us is the control group!
[Joey] As trusted as Norman is, he isn't one of Joey's... white-knuckle-clutched-keepsakes of a person,
[Sammy] *sarcastic* Okay, everyone ready to go to sleep? That's not a scary prospect right now, right? That's something that we're all really confident about doing? Cool, that's great. [Henry] Yeah, yeah, that's definitely not gonna, it's gonna go great...! [GM] Nobody's even cut their hand on a slick stone! It's fine! [Henry] NO ONE BETTER CUT THEIR HAND ON A SLICK STONE! We got enough problems!! [Joey] (Looking at you, Prophet!)
[Henry] Is Joey,,, sharing this plan with anyone? [Joey] ouo Has anyone asked him?
[Joey] Let's send Henry then! [Henry] Alright. Send Henry to Carcosa! [Sammy] *exasperated* yeah that's fine.... [Joey] It's not FULLY sending him there! It's just making a connection. [Joey] A little bridge! [Sammy] Uggghhhh... Sammy doesn't think we need any bridges to Carcosa. [Sammy] We've got enough Carcosa. [Sammy] Put some back.
[Sammy] This is what happens When You Give a Joey a Dream Spell.
[Sammy] We can't actually guarantee that New York isn't going to sink. That's not out of the question. [Jack] Is the Joey Drew specialty NOT "promising things that aren't necessarily things you can promise??"
[Henry] Actually, before Henry leaves he's going to give Joey a hug. [Joey] He doesn't get to leave. [Henry] Oh. [Joey] But Joey will take the hug!
[Henry] You know this man gives good hugs. You're getting a good Henry hug. [Jack] Gonna crunch all of Joey's terrible, very bad bones. [Henry] He's gonnna try not to crunch all of Joey's terrible bones! [Henry] But, I dunno. [Henry] Roll for damage.
[GM] The lurker knows this is serious, but he's also excited, because he has heard what a slumber party is from Henry's kids.
[GM] Now it is Friday, the 28th of December. [Sammy] Okay. Cool. Let's all make an effort to not ring in the New Year in Carcosa. That's MY New Year's Resolution: Don't Be In Carcosa.

Needed a hit of modern!wealthy!Steve that’s kind of an amalgam of all my favorites (wcil, dcmb, pbv, I’m looking at you 👀). Only alludes to smut, reference to rimming, and a whisper of dom!Steve. Otherwise just bunch of fluff. 2k
I’m just in a mood where I want to be spoiled within an inch of my life is that so wrong?? 18+ MDNI
Tumblr media
Throbbing. Aching. Pounding.
Your head was on fire when you awoke—basted in sweat, somehow also shivering as you dragged yourself out from under the blankets you had twisted yourself up in during the night.
Steve’s bedroom was dark and cool as a cave, thermostat turned way down and the ceiling fan set to its highest setting, though it barely made a sound. Sitting on the bedside table was a chilled Voss water bottle and a small ceramic dish with some Advil in it that was beckoning.
It had been years since you were this hungover. Close to a decade, almost. You remembered the feeling well, though you were far less equipped to shake it off in your “advancing” age.
Eagerly, you took the much needed pills and gulped down the water. A shudder ran through you as you recalled how, in your twenties, you would cure a morning like this with bottomless mimosas. Just the thought made your stomach churn. It was a miracle you hadn’t thrown up.
You didn’t do this anymore. You went out, sure. You got a little tipsy and sometimes maybe that turned into a lot tipsy. You were supposed to be smarter now, though. Older. Wiser.
But when your old college friends called and said they were going to be in town for just one night—and you just so happened to be getting off work early, and you had the next day off…
What exactly were you supposed to do?
Evidently, the answer was mainline tequila and dance to 90s music until your muscles went limp—not that you even felt it with the liquor coursing through your body. All to end the night stumbling across the threshold of your boyfriend’s swanky penthouse at nearly two in the morning.
You only half-remembered getting to Steve’s, incapable of resisting the allure of him and his Savoir bed in your drunken state. You had sunk into the plump mattress and practically floated, weightless as you drifted off to sleep. Steve still refused to tell you how much it cost, fearful you would never agree to sleep in it again after you found out. But you’d googled it and holy fucking shit was he right to be worried. It was so nice, though—stuffed (apparently) with sheep’s wool, pure cashmere and Mongolian yak hair. Of all his rich guy stuff that both perplexed and allured you simultaneously, that one was your favorite.
The sound of Steve moving around in the kitchen as well as the clinking of his stainless steel cook-ware drew you out of hiding. You shuffled out of his room sluggishly, hugging your glass water bottle to your chest like a teddy bear.
“Hey, killer.”
Steve’s smile was so dazzlingly bright it actually made you wince. How did you not noticeyou were dating a damn Crest commercial? Grumbling your good morning, you squinted at the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of his apartment and had to resist the urge to hiss.
“Whoops—sorry, baby, hang on.”
He quickly tugged his phone out of his pocket and swiped his thumb across the screen, tapping it on some controls. There’s a soft electrical whir you know well, and the apartment goes from painfully bright to comfortably dim as his remote controlled curtains begin to descend. Rather than the blackout shades drawn in the bedroom, he’s opted for the regular ones so a bit of natural light can still filter through as he makes his breakfast.
Or, at least what you thought was his breakfast.
“I didn’t think you’d be up this soon,” he said with a chuckle, sliding a freshly poured cup of coffee across the counter to you.
“I’m not,” you muttered. “I’m pretty sure I’m dead and astral projecting what’s left of my soul.”
A steaming plate of eggs piled with cubed ham, green pepper and cheese promptly appeared in front of you as you took a seat at his vast kitchen island. It sits in a scrambled heap, not the pretty omelet you were guessing Steve had planned to present you with. But it looks divine regardless.
“Another failed attempt?” you chuckled, taking the fork he was holding out.
“I’m gonna get it one of these days,” he replies with an easy smile.
With an elaborate flourish you know is for your benefit, he slapped the dish towel in his hand over his shoulder and leaned on the counter as he waited to watch you take your first bite.
“Ugh,” you moaned as you brought the fork to your lips. “So fucking good.”
Your stomach quivered with relief at finally having something in it that wasn’t liquor, but you willed it to behave and hoped it would settle the more you had. Steve smirked.
“So, how much do you remember?”
The cocky smile on the boy’s lips tells you you should be glad your memory is hazy. The night was coming back to you in flashes, but they were blurred and jumbled.
You weren’t blacked out or anything, your friends would have never let you leave alone if you were, but you were definitely past the point of thinking even remotely rationally. Hence, why you’d shown up here when you found out Steve was still awake after having to get on a conference call with one of his company’s international contingents.
You remembered tumbling into a cab and the driver rolling his eyes when you slurred at him to take you to Steve’s house before prompting you for, you know, an actual address.
And Steve had helped you dress for bed, gently batting away your hands when you tried to paw at the waistband of his sweatpants. It only made you more determined, snaking fingers into his tousled brown hair or raking your nails down his muscled chest—stopping when you noticed one of them had broken and the polish was starting to chip.
You didn’t care, though. You were too hungry for him. Too fucking ravenous.
“You better behave,” he’d warned, eyes flashing with that look you loved. The one that made your insides squirm and your thighs press.
“Or what?” you’d teased, still toying with the drawstring of his thin sweats.
“Or you’ll be sorry.”
He tried to keep up his firm demeanor, but the little twitch in the corner of his mouth betrayed him. The words and his smooth, authoritative voice still made your heart race, though.
You loved it when he made you sorry.
Steve wouldn’t do anything, though. Aside from a few kisses he refused to deepen and a graze (or two) of your hand he let you get away with, Steve kept things very PG-13. He helped you out of your dress and brushed a soft cloth across your face to remove your make-up.
He got you into comfy clothes and swaddled the two of you in bed after you’d finished the Voss he added a Liquid IV to. They were supposed to be for the trail runs he liked to do on the weekends, but they were good to have on hand for nights like this. In seconds you went limp and pliant in his arms and fell asleep with him stroking your hair, his warm breath tickling the shell of your ear.
“I remember you taking care of me,” you said, giving him a sweet smile before you squished your eyes closed in shame. “And I know I was kinda worked up.”
Steve chuckled at that, taking a sip of his own coffee. “I noticed.”
A loud groan came out of you, though this one wasn’t from the pain in your head.
You’d conveniently left your phone in the bedroom, too embarrassed to even look at your text thread with him from last night. Because you did vaguely recall a slew of blue bubbles filled with increasingly lewd comments and promises of what you were going to do to him that you had no business promising in your current state.
You imagined they read like a horny haiku.
I’m coming for you, baby
Hahah that’s what she said.
Or…what I said?
Whatever
I need you so bad
Wanna kiss every mole on your body
I think your little hole misses me, wants my tongue again
Want you to fuck me until we break that 30,000 dollar bed
You wondered if there was a way to remotely delete texts? From your phone…from your brain.
Drunken you’s tendency to write sexts your pussy couldn’t cash was one of your least appealing qualities, in your opinion. You got yourself all riled up just to pass out within ten minutes. But it entertained Steve to no end seeing that side of you, so unlike the coy and demure front you usually tried to put up.
“I was kind of a mess, wasn’t I? I can’t believe I did that.”
“Hey, don’t start,” Steve cooed, coming around the island and coiling you up in his arms. “You work hard, you deserve to have some fun. And it’s your day off, who cares if you’re hungover?”
The smell of his aftershave filled your nose as he hugged you and his hands came up to cradle your face as he planted a kiss on your forehead, barely phased by how clammy it was.
“You know, we can cancel date night if you don’t feel up to it. Just order in? Watch a movie?”
“No, no need,” you said. “I’ll be okay. I’m already feeling better.”
A lie. But you at least felt like you might feel better soon, so that was something. And Steve had been looking forward to trying this restaurant since he got the reservation.
“Okay, great.” Steve smiled. “So we’ll have dinner at 6, then the show…I’m thinking maybe we’ll skip cocktails and do dessert at that little place you like instead?” he asked.
You hummed at the thought of a warm, gooey blondie topped with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup from your favorite dessert bar. Steve smiled and nodded knowingly as he started to gather his laptop and a few other things into his work bag.
“You want me to send the car here or to your place to pick you up?”
“Mine,” you sighed. “I gotta pick something else to wear now.”
A sour frown covered your face as you thought of the dress you had intended to wear tonight, but had wound up being drafted for your clubbing extravaganza. It was just too tempting, ready and waiting for you hanging on the back of your door when you rushed home to get ready for your impromptu plans.
It had ended up in a heap somewhere last night as Steve helped you out of it, his nose wrinkling when he noticed how it reeked of the Guiness some jerk spilled on you at the last bar you went to before calling it a night. And it wasn’t lost on you that it was missing now, probably having been sent out for drycleaning with some of Steve’s suits and dress shirts.
Steve just smiled, his voice playful as his eyes twinkled.
“How about you buy something new instead?” he asked. “Go see my girl. Maybe she’s got a spare dress or something laying around.”
You rolled your eyes. His personal seamstress never had spare bespoke dresses just laying around. The twinkle in his eye made you guess, correctly, that he had already commissioned something for you weeks ago or had her tailor a piece for you he’d found himself.
“You did look good in the other one, though.” he mused. “I’m glad I got to see it.”
You sighed and shoveled down another bite of your breakfast.  “I’m sorry I just showed up like that. I, ahh…wasn’t thinking super clearly.”
“Don’t be silly,” Steve said. “I’m always happy to see you. Plus it’s…it’s kinda nice when you get that way. All needy for me.”
His warm lips pressed against your throat, vibrating with a soft moan as he left a trail of delicate kisses up the column of your neck to the sensitive spot behind your ear.
“Just stay here,” he pleaded softly. “You know you like my bed better.”
A sigh released from deep in your chest and you melted into his touch as one of his broad palms coasted across your thigh, making your skin buzz under his hand. Hanging out here was sounding better by the second. You already had some clothes in the drawer he’d cleared out for you in his closet and you could get in and out of his place fine with the keycard he’d given you.
The amenities were awfully tempting. You thought of his sleek, modern bathroom that looked more like it belonged in a spa rather than someone’s home, complete with a seemingly endless array of aromatherapy products. You could continue your ongoing affair with his steam shower and the massage cycle in his bathtub. And his building had a rooftop gym that was basically private when all the other executives who lived here were off at work.
“Okay,” you sighed, playing up the dramatics with a flutter of your lashes. “If I have to.”
Steve chuckled at your sarcasm and gave your thigh a tight squeeze.
“Think you’ll get your nails done today?” he asked, remembering your adorably forlorn look when you noticed the break last night.
“Actually, I could,” you said, thinking. Your nail lady’s shop was only a few blocks from here.
Before you’d even answered, his leather wallet had come out of his jacket pocket and he was tugging crisp notes from the billfold.
“Steve, you don’t have to—”
“Baby, please?” he pouted, jutting out his plush bottom lip at you. “It’s for me.”
“How are my nails for you?” you snorted and tried to bite back a smile. It didn’t work.
“You need fresh claws if you’re gonna scratch my back up right,” he teased lowly, slipping bills into your hand. Way too much, way more than you needed to leave Mariana a great tip.
“So you can have a pedicure too.”
He answered the thought you hadn’t spoken and his mouth covered yours, cutting off any further protests with one last long kiss.
“See you tonight, baby,” he said. His lips skimmed your jaw and his voice lowered to a heated whisper in your ear. “And don’t think I forgot about making you sorry later.”
With that, he snatched up his bag and breezed out the door, leaving you breathless staring after him. And suddenly it wasn’t your hangover that had your stomach doing somersaults.

It was your 18th birthday and getting a tattoo was the first thing that came to your mind since you couldn’t think of anything else. Due to your low pain tolerance, you questioned yourself as to why you didn’t think a bit harder when your parents asked you what you wanted for your special day.
“A tattoo? You can’t even get flu shots without crying.” Your mom joked which sent your dad laughing a bit.
“Okay I know, but I don’t know what else to do.”
“Well, you already know what you wanna get?” You nodded as you pulled your phone out to show the sketch of some flowers that you drew. “Aww that’s cute~ You gettin it on your arm?” You wanted it on your thigh because you thought it looked better there.
“On my thigh?”
“Your thigh? You sure you can sit there for that long?” Your dad commented. He exchanged looks with his wife before their eyes said everything else for them. Your parents were a bit strict so you were shocked that they even let you get a tattoo. “And you already made the appointment?”
You nodded. “It’s someone Tiera knows.” Is what Tiera told you when you mentioned the tattoo birthday gift to her. You didn’t know this person but you trusted Tiera. She even offered to be there with you but you made it your mission to go to the place on your own. All your parents did was give you the money so the tattoo would be a gift.
After talking it over with your parents, as you’ve done for majority of the choices in your life, you get to the tattoo parlor that Tiera was talking about.
When you get there, there’s a tall guy with a buzzcut and tattoos littered over his arms and a few piercings on his face. He looked up and instantly smiled when he saw you walk in. The tattoos and piercings made him look scary so his bright smile towards you eases your spirit.
“Hey!” He comes from around the counter to greet you. He looked to be the only one there at the moment it it was early so you figured whoever else worked there didn’t come in yet. “You’re Y/n, right? Tiera told me you were coming.” You nodded your head and internally thanked your friend for being the reason you didn’t have to speak too many times today.
“First time?” You nodded again. “You don’t talk much, do you?” You shook your head. You didn’t really like talking unless you really really wanted to. You didn’t know this guy enough to try to talk his head off.
“Aww man, we gotta fix that. C’mon.” You followed him through the place to the secluded area he’d be working at. He was giving you small directions while he made sure he had all his stuff together.
“What’s your name by the way?” You felt silly.
“Oh, Connie.” He smiled again and you could almost melt into a puddle.
“Is that short for anything or..?”
“I don’t like telling people my real name. I hate it.” The two of you were beginning to have a conversation when he was cleaning your skin and everything. “Anyways, Tiera already sent me the flowers you wanted and everything,” He showed you the sketch of the flowers you wanted. Connie’s drawing was a lot better for what you wanted for the tattoo than you thought. “You like it?” You nodded excessively which was a big stamp of approval from you. “That’s good.. before I go ahead and get started, you got any concerns or anything?”
“Is it gonna hurt?” You said quietly. He laughed a bit but he didn’t mean to.
“Yeah, maybe.” Was an understatement for someone with a low pain tolerance. “You like shots?” You shook your head and he chuckled again. “That’s okay, once we get to talking, you’ll forget all about it. It’s gonna be quick, okay?” You nodded. You were obviously in good hands so you didn’t know why you were so worried. And plus, Connie was a cute guy so you didn’t mind that addition to the experience.
In a way, the experience was quick. Once the two of you got to talking as he was inking your skin for the first time, the pain didn’t mean a lot and you were slowly coming out of your shell with Connie. The conversation started off with simple things, then it went into more personal topics and before you knew it, he was finished.
You giggled “So why don’t you like your real name? Are you a Carl or something?”
“No.. my real name is Constance—“
“That’s a pretty name.” He looked at you like he thought you were lying.
“I doubt it but your name is pretty. You are also pretty.” Your heart dropped to your feet even though it was for a good reason.
“You’re just being nice..”
“Nah, I’m for real,” He said as he was wrapping up your tattoo after he showed it to you. For your first tattoo, especially on a place you wouldn’t expect to get it, it was absolutely beautiful. You would definitely be coming back her to get another some other time. “I’m bout to ask for your number right now, you cool with that?” He smiled at you for another time that day with those alluring hazel eyes. You didn’t even notice how well his small freckles painted his face. It was your favorite part about it so far and you internally beat yourself up for beginning to fall into him so quickly.
“I guess, but don’t you have a girlfriend?” He furrowed his brows in confusion at you once he finished up.
“I don’t, yet.” All you could do was hum as you wondered if his flirting was genuine or if it was normal thing he did.
The two of you sat in silence before you spoke when you were getting ready to go back up to the front to pay. “Thank you, Connie.” You smiled warmly.
“Of course, pretty girl.” You started to hand him the money until he stopped you.
“Nah, you good.”
“What? No, here—“
He laughed. “It’s fine, Y/n. I’ll get you next time.” He must’ve really liked you if he missed out on money from just meeting you today. But you didn’t like not paying people.
“Okay..” You put the money back in your purse.
“But I know how you can pay me though if you want.” Your head instantly shot up.
“Hm?”
“That number?” You eyes widened. You didn’t think he was serious.
“You were for real?”
Connie chuckled. “Yes, yes I was.” He slid over a piece of paper and a pen. “Whenever you’re ready.” You fought back a smile before writing down your number and sliding it back to him.
“Thank you~”
“Bye, Connie Springer.”
“Bye, pretty girl~”

You weren't sure how you'd tell him. Or exactly when you'd tell him. You had told others before, but this time was different. You really really liked him. If you had the ability to envision someone you wanted to do the rest of your life with, he would be it.
And what you needed to tell him could cause you to lose him forever. And that news was that you had a sexually transmitted infection. Herpes Simplex Virus 2. Or HSV-2 for short. And you lived with it for years. It wasn't a big deal, really. But it took you a long time to get to this point.
You wondered if your strict religious upbringing and being repressed for most, if not all of your adolescence and young adulthood were contributing factors. It all came to a head when you were finally an adult and could move out of your parents' hypervigilant gaze. You started feeling excited at this new found freedom but went a little crazy with it. You started dating casually. It was exhilarating and felt empowering to be desired. To know that men wanted you, craved you, and desired to know the deepest, most intimate parts of your body.
So, you had some fun.
It was clear most of the guys you dated weren't as educated on safe sex either, or the passion of moment just threw those safety precautions out the window. It was careless, yes. And absolutely risky. But you didn't know how to ask for these things and weren't taught how to. You were afraid to speak up, that they wouldn't want you anymore if you put your foot down.
Several months into your promiscuity, you had a sinking feeling in your stomach you should go get tested when you felt an odd tingly sensation in your genital region. You prayed that nothing was wrong.
The doctor could not have called you at a worse time. Right in the middle of your shift. You stood in the stairwell of your job, waiting for a sigh of relief or your entire world to come shattering down.
"Your blood work looks good, except..."
There it is. Except.
"You tested positive for HSV-2. You have genital herpes. It is a very treatable condition, but there is no cure."
Just like that, a life sentence. You were super young when this happened, so to you this was earth shattering. Your mind didn't even pick up the rest of what he was telling you as you hung up your phone.
The world outside seemed to grow fuzzy as though someone bludgeoned you in the back of your head. Colors rapidly disappearing, causing your retinas to only see gray. Claws of despair sinking into you. Not able to speak, not able to think, gasping for air while the tide crashed and beat against you again and again, keeping you under, forcing you to drown.
Your mind did what it does best and became your worst enemy.
"Nobody's going to want someone like me."
"I'm dirty."
"If you weren't such a careless slut maybe this wouldn't have happened to you."
"Quit crying, this is just a consequence of your actions, deal with it."
"You're being punished. Maybe if you weren't so weak and didn't lose your faith, God wouldn't have had to teach you this lesson. You wouldn't need to learn it if you were actually good."
"Typical for a pathetic girl like you with daddy issues who can't go a month without a guy telling her she's pretty. See what happens when all you're good at is spreading your legs?"
Your internal monologue flogged you like this for months. You had to take some time to just cry, just lay in your bed and wait, praying to the God that abandoned you. The winds and rains of self-doubt and misery mercilessly beating against you while you hid in a hole, waiting for the storm to pass. A numb expression on your face as you watched everyone outside live their lives while you just stayed frozen in place with a dark cloud over your head.
Just holding on for better days that hopefully laid ahead, hoping you'd make peace with this permanent new part of you that seemed to latch itself onto you overnight.
And... slowly, you did.
You started taking antiviral medication. And it improved your symptoms drastically. Having an outbreak could be quite painful and uncomfortable. Gritting your teeth and your eyes squinting in pain when you had to use the restroom with open sores, the sting causing you to suck air between your teeth.
Once you got the hang of taking your medication on a daily basis, any outbreaks you experienced were only a couple of times a year, usually popping up only if you were under extreme stress or if you had missed a few doses.
Outside of your physical health, dating was tricky. You pretty much began to avoid it altogether, despite the raging loneliness within you. You just wanted to know what it was like to recieve the love you were so ready to give someone else. To have someone hold you at night and stand across from you at the altar as you pledged to spend your lives together, a conscious decision to not let this condition stand in the way of you two being together.
Most people were understanding, but eventually they'd stop talking to you. The unmistakable shift in your dynamic as soon as you told them when things started to get good. You respected their right to not put themselves at risk while you simultaneously grieved for just once, to hear someone say,
"It doesn't bother me that you have this. I still want to be with you. Let's figure this out together."
You came across someone who also had it. But the relationship never grew into something serious for other reasons.
You took a long break. Just to find yourself and be comfortable with being your own person. Not letting yourself settle for less than what you deserved.
Eventually you found Miguel, who was a welcome change to all of that. After college, you were Spider Society's fresh new accountant, sticking out like a sore thumb amongst your STEM and Spider-Colleagues.
Miguel noticed you while he was walking to the break room for another pot of coffee. This wasn't even the usual way he'd go, but after a casual glance in your direction at the way your eyes were narrowed at your computer screen, lips slightly parted in concentration, he switched his route to include an accidental brush past your open office door from then on, intrigued with this new face around the place.
You noticed him the second time he passed by, and you had to do a double take. He was gorgeous. Strong cheekbones that led into a chiseled jaw and wide neck. Warm umber skin surrounding scarlet seas of his eyes and full, pouting lips. A majestic, tall frame that embodied strength in every sense of the word. The evidence lay in the fit muscles that crowned his entire body from his arms, to his legs and whew, that stunning back.
The third time, you noticed him approaching and gave a little nod of your head with a closed lip smile, the generic, passively kind, but also slightly aloof way that acquaintances passing would give to each other. He returned the gesture, and you felt your stomach do a little flip as he walked away.
Next time, you actually flashed a smile, and he raised an eyebrow but gave that lukewarm expression of acknowledgement again. Not quite a smile yet.
Oh, but the first time he smiled at you. That sealed the deal. At first, you felt that maybe you were in danger of just being in lust with the guy, his physical features the first thing to pull you in. But when he flashed that dazzling smile at you, you knew immediately that your heart was in actual danger of being absolutely wrecked by this guy at some point. The bottom row of his teeth were ever so slightly crooked. His bushy, sculpted brows so expressive despite the stoic disposition that always painted his face. He was sooo...so...
Perfect.
His laugh and his voice was a whole other issue entirely. His voice wasn't exactly deep, but it was gentle. A sweet caress against your eardrums. It dripped like honey. That small, whispery chuckle of his he'd let out when you finally made small talk with him had you wanting to bash your head against the wall.
"Top o' the mowwwrning to ya! " you said in a silly voice as he walked up to your desk.
He cracked a smile. "What's got you in such a big mood this morning?"
You smiled like you were keeping a secret. "Oh, just the fact that it's Friday, it's payday, I have a 32 ounce iced coffee, and I have theeee best job in the world!" (A little bit sarcastic about the last item you listed)
Miguel scoffed. "Well, I'm glad someone is happy around here. I can't seem to get any peace and quiet or work done with all these shocking anomalies we've been dealing with lately."
"You wanna know a secret?" You ask, raising an eyebrow, feigning mystery.
Miguel rolls his eyes but is unable to suppress a smile. "Dime." (Tell me)
"The bench at the bottom of the hill in the courtyard is actually the best place to go to get some work done. But don't tell anyone else about it because that's where I go on my lunch breaks."
Miguel's eyebrows raise. "Is that so? Well, you don't mind if I were to try it out this afternoon?"
You grin and swish your iced coffee. "Nope! All yours. You gotta text me about it and let me know how it went, though. Tell me I'm right."
Miguel scoffed. "You're on. But, I don't have your number."
Your cheeks burn a little bit but you scribble your number down on a sticky note and hand it to him. He shoots one more stunning smile at you and walks away.
Later, he did text you that you were absolutely right. Peace and quiet for a whole two hours outside managed to get him to complete 3 weeks worth of paperwork he was behind on. You felt like you were on top of the world, but it escalated to a whole new level when you were straddling his lap in the backseat of his car after your first date just a week later, making out with him in a quiet parking lot at the head of the trail where you two went on a hike together.
You were getting lost in how tasty his lips were, soft and full with just a hint of his sweat from the exertion. You feel the heat of the moment about to overtake you when he starts to grind his hips, feeling him starting to harden underneath you. Oh God, the way this man moaned was purely sinful.
You groan and whimper, realizing you can't take this further, no matter how much your pussy is begging for him right now. You pull away with a teasing smile.
"Let's wait..." you say softly, passion still dotting your voice.
Miguel shows the slightest bit of disappointment but nods in agreement. "Of course." He sighs and gives your thighs a squeeze of reassurance.
"I'm starving." you say, tracing his neck with a finger.
He smiles. "Well, let's go fix that right now."
You two shared grilled cheese sandwiches from your favorite food truck and as you walked into your apartment, you admitted to yourself that you were falling.
On your second date, you casually mentioned a little white lie that you were on your period to hopefully keep sex off the table so you wouldn't have to have the tough conversation.
"Oh, are you sure you're feeling up to getting dinner right now?" Miguel asked as you walked side by side towards the small Mexican restaurant.
"Mhmm!" You replied cheerfully.
Miguel gave you a skeptical look but followed you into the restaurant.
It was one of those express food places where you ordered your food at the counter. When the cashier asked if you were eating here or taking it to go, Miguel abruptly interrupted,
"We'll take it to go."
You looked up at him, puzzled.
"You're not feeling well, we should let you rest at home where you're comfortable." He replied, taking your hand in his.
"Oh, right!" You smiled and nodded enthusiastically. You totally forgot you were lying. Your heart starting to pump quicker in anticipation when you realize he's coming over. Give me the strength, please, God.
----
After you two went back to your apartment and ate, you talked for nearly two hours about literally everything. Your childhoods, your complicated relationship with family, favorite foods, places you've always wanted to travel to, politics, even.
As soon as you cuddled next to him on your couch and got a whiff of his cologne, soon your tongue was in his mouth and he was on top of you, kissing you with so much tenderness you were actually contemplating marriage in your head.
He sighed a little into your mouth, letting his hands wander down to your ass. Your eyes went wide, but you continued anyway, continuing to lock yourself against his yummy lips.
Miguel groaned and moved to kissing your neck, your vision flashing as your eyes fluttered at the tempting sensation he was giving you.
"Not going to lie...I want you right now..." He whispered against your skin.
You whimpered. "I want you too....so much....but I'm on my period, remember?" Hoping he'd buy it.
He inhaled sharply at your words, increasing the intensity of his kisses.
"I don't mind..."
Dammit.
You feel your eyes water and before you know it, you're crying. Miguel pulls back, concern in his eyes.
"Did I hurt you...? What's wrong...?"
He presses the back of his hand against your cheek as one tear after another and another streaks off to the side of your eyes and into your hair, gravity causing them to run downwards as you're still pinned underneath him.
"I can't..." You choke out. "It's just something I need to tell you."
Miguel swallows and allows you to sit up. His eyes remain locked on you and scan your face for any inkling of what you're about to tell him.
Just drop the bomb now.
"I'm not actually on my period right now. I can't have sex with you right away because I need to tell you that I have an STI. It's Herpes Simplex Virus 2. I'll have it the rest of my life. I get occasional outbreaks in my genital region due to stress or if I miss a couple doses of my antiviral medication. I've had it for over 5 years now and it's quite manageable."
Miguel nods, his face in an unreadable expression. His eyes leave yours for just a moment as though he's starting to think quietly in his head.
You exhale shakily, the worst part is over, but continue with the facts which you've rehearsed many times.
"It's very common. As many as 1 in 6 adults may have it in the US, but many who do show no symptoms, as a result they might not even know they have it. But, I understand that you need to do what's best for you and come to your own conclusion about what I just told you. So if you choose to not continue seeing me, I understand." At the last sentence, your voice cracks a bit. "I like you a lot. I'm sorry for getting emotional..."
Miguel sits in silence for just a moment longer and he puts a hand on your thigh. "Thank you for telling me.... To be honest, I was expecting worse news than that. Like, you have a secret boyfriend I don't know about or... " He gives a little scoff, then looks at you, not moving his hand from your thigh.
"It's not the best of news, but it's not the end of the world. And it certainly doesn't define who you are. You're still you, and I've enjoyed getting to know you quite a bit and find myself liking you a lot too..." Miguel swallows. It's been a while since he's been this expressive with his feelings, but he feels he can venture a little outside his comfort zone since you're putting yourself in such a vulnerable position right now.
"I don't know much about Herpes myself. I'd like to educate myself more on this and then we can talk more about what we can do from here. Is that okay with you?" He asks, his voice gentle.
You nod, eagerly. The weight of the world had just been taken off your chest, you could breathe at last. He asks you a few more questions, like how often you take your medication, when you got diagnosed, how you manage your condition and so on. You answer honestly and firmly, pausing to gauge his reaction and make sure you explained yourself clearly enough. After talking for another hour or so, it's about 10:30 pm. You've definitely reached quitting time, and you're fighting to keep your eyes open.
You two share a long embrace before he walks out the door.
"Thank you, for a wonderful night and for dinner and being so understanding. I haven't always had the best response when telling people about this." You say into his chest, trying to hold him long enough his scent will stick to you after he leaves.
He smiles, still holding you. "You're welcome. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable with me. I'm kind of amazed at how much we have in common. I'll talk to one of my medical contacts some more about this. Don't be worried if I don't text you right away tomorrow. Then, we can talk more about what we'll do."
You nod, and after giving him one last kiss on the cheek, he leaves out the door and into the night. You watch him walk down the stairs and close your door with a soft click.
----
The next day, Miguel's at HQ speaking with one of the physicians in the lab.
"What are the different types of Herpes Viruses?"
The doctor leans against the counter and answers,
"There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV 1 and HSV 2. HSV 1 commonly causes oral herpes, or cold sores. It can show up as an upper respiratory tract infection during early childhood, whereas HSV 2 is the cause of most cases of genital herpes. However, it is possible for HSV 1 to cause genital herpes and HSV 2 to cause oral herpes."
Miguel nods and asks more questions.
"I ask because I started seeing a woman recently who has HSV-2. To my knowledge, I don't have it. What would that mean for us in terms of intimacy?"
The doctor nods and she answers,
"HSV-2 is mainly transmitted during sex through contact with genital or anal surfaces, skin, sores or fluids of someone infected with the virus. It can still be transmitted in the absence of symptoms. If you plan on being intimate, I recommend the use of condoms to decrease the risk of transmission. If your partner is also taking antiviral medication to suppress outbreaks, that helps decrease the risk of transmission as well. But, if your partner is having an outbreak or symptoms, I recommend abstaining from sexual activity until they resolve."
Miguel nods and takes in all the information the doctor is providing him, thanking her for her time.
He calls you, and you answer eagerly.
"Miguel?"
"Hey," he answers. You can hear the soft smile in his voice as he greets you. "Want to meet at Central Park in an hour? I figured we could go for a walk and talk in person. You don't need to be worried. I want to see where this goes with us, and now that the doctor gave me more information, I want to talk about it with you."
You feel your chest rise with hope. "Yeah, absolutely. I'll meet you in an hour. Thank you for taking the time to learn about it. You have no idea how much that means."
Miguel smiles. "Of course. You've been so patient with me, it's the least I could do. See you soon, get there safe."
"See you soon!" You hang up, and go get dressed.
---
The rain has started to come down a little bit, sprinkling and peppering the pavement in little dots, the earthy petrichor permeating the late spring air as the sky melts into a faded grey overcast with a thick layer of cloud cover.
You tuck your hair in your jacket hood, starting to jog a little faster to escape the falling raindrops as you approach Central Park. You see Miguel sitting on a park bench, across from the pond, totally unphased by the precipitation. You stroll awkwardly up to him, not sure where to look as you get closer to him. He hears footfalls approaching and turns, searching for the source and finally notices you, becoming slightly amused at your displeased reaction to the rain.
"Sorry, perhaps meeting in the park wasn't the best idea considering the weather," he says as he stands up, causing you to move your chin up a little to meet his tall gaze.
"Yeah, perhaps not." You huff.
Miguel grins and gestures towards some trees that will provide a little bit of shelter from the budding rain shower and you follow him there.
He leans against the tree, hands on his hips. "I talked to the physician. All in all, it sounds like a very manageable condition, which you've already covered with me. You're already taking antiviral medication daily." He clears his throat.
"But, when it comes to sex, we should use condoms. At least in the beginning to decrease the chances of transmission, and make sure you're feeling well and have no symptoms before we do anything. You've had the condition for long enough, I trust you that you're aware of your body and can pick up on whether or not you're about to have an outbreak. Do you have any thoughts on that?" He looks at you.
You nod. "I think that's completely reasonable. Thank you for trusting me, really." You lay your hand on his shoulder, giving it a small squeeze.
He gives you a small side smile in return. "Just so you know, I'm not expecting sex right away. I just bring it up now, in case we find ourselves in a heated entanglement like we did last night..." He kisses your hand. "We'll have already covered it and know what to expect."
You nod. "I definitely want to, at some point. But I'm in no rush either. We'll wait for the moment to present itself I guess?"
He grins and stands up from where he was leaning, letting both of his hands cup your face now, nothing but soft affection for you lining his pupils.
"Sounds perfect to me."
You two traded warm, lingering kisses as the rain poured a little harder around you, saturating the city of Nueva York, turning the trees in Central Park a vibrant, otherworldly green, the thunder shaking the sky in a deep rumble.
----
2 years later on a cruise ship gently coasting the Caribbean
The blinds were drawn around your ocean suite, giggles escaped you and Miguel as you gave him a playful shove back onto your freshly made bed after dinner, courtesy of housekeeping, both of you about four wine glasses deep.
His breath hitches as he watches you slowly hike your strapless maxi dress down your body, biting his lip when your tits bob out of your dress, practically drooling as though it's the first time he's laid eyes on you when the fabric slinks off the rest of your body, kissing your curves on the way down until it's laying in a heap on the floor, leaving you naked in front of him.
"Ven aquí..." (Come here) He whispers, pulling you closer as he sits on the bed, the noticeable glint of a silver wedding band with a small diamond embedded in the middle on his left hand.
He leans down and licks hungrily between the folds of your pussy. You sigh and close your eyes, using those beautiful broad shoulders of his to steady yourself, the twinkle of your own sizeable rock on the wedding band on your left hand catching in the dim light of the honeymoon suite.
The sound of his licks get more sloppy and wet as you drip more and more into his mouth, his tongue fueling the fire. "God, baby...."he groans, landing a sharp spank on your ass.
You gasp and buck your hips into him, pleasure sizzling in your core when your clit brushes against his nose. He pulls you in tighter to his face and you lift your leg, putting one foot on the bed to spread your pussy wider for him.
He scoots back instead, pulling you on top of him and directly over his beautiful face, his chest hairs poking out of his half buttoned dress shirt. He has one hand gripping your thigh and one squeezing your ass cheek as he continues to eat you out. "Lower, baby.." he whispers, tugging you downwards so you're sitting right on his face.
You feel your cheeks burn as you look at yourself in the mirror hanging above your bed on the wall. Completely naked and legs spread, riding your new husband's gorgeous face, his powerful large body pinned underneath yours.
One orgasm later, you're panting and sweating on the bed, looking up at the ceiling when Miguel gets back on top of you, planting a sweet kiss into both ankles as he brings them to rest on his shoulders. You look at him through half-lidded eyes that rake over his majestic form, his arm muscles rippling slightly as he gets into position.
He brings his cock to the entrance of your pussy, your ankles still perched on his shoulders, swirling the tip around the outside to collect any remaining arousal as lube. Both of you gasp at the same time as he slowly eases his cock inside you. That first thrust sends you straight to heaven and you release a satisfied moan. He sets a steady pace, fucking you in splendid, deep, strokes.
Your lips fall open and he traces them with his thumb while still rutting into you. You close your mouth around it, sucking and swirling your tongue around his thumb while you gaze into his eyes.
His own mouth falls open a little, lust blown pupils of his showing he's dangerously close to cumming as he lets out a deep moan.
"Fffuck, baby, you look so beautiful like this. Sucking my finger while your pussy takes my cock..." He purrs.
You let out a filthy moan in response, still sucking his finger while he drives his cock deep into your pussy with both ankles on his shoulders. He leans down to kiss you, letting your ankles fall to the side and back onto the bed, opening your thighs a little bit as you welcome his body in missionary. He tilts his head to the side a little bit, scarlet irises pulling you in, then kisses you gently as his body continues to make love to yours.
You savor the kiss, letting your tongue explore his mouth, the taste of your pussy lingering in it and bringing both hands to tangle themselves in his hair. He pulls away for just a moment for air, and you coo softly to him
"I love you so much..."
He exhales slowly, slowing down his strokes just a little but making them more deep and dramatic, causing a twinge of pain and pleasure to course throughout your veins.
"I love you, my wife. Forever."
You kept fucking deep into the night, tropical colors painting the sky as the sun dipped below the horizon, nothing but ocean air and the thrill of adventure awaiting at your destination.
Your diagnosis and any other obstacles remained long forgotten as you and Miguel entered forever with hands intertwined, still and all.

May I request one of the Twisted Earth story you made but like with the Heartslabyul students?
Twisted Earth Part Two
Summary: Heartslaybul x gn!reader. They are real, and you're the game.
Part One Part Three Part Four Part Five Part Six
Tumblr media
His mother disapproved of video games, they took away from study time. So when Cater took his phone and downloaded the game for him, he didn't open it for months.
It's the only game on his phone, and it's in a hidden folder so that when his mother searches his phone, she can't find it.
He only plays once a month, usually after Cater tells him an event is going on.  He'll heave a heavy sigh, open it for an hour or so, and not play again.
He was drawn to you. He doesn't know what it is. Maybe he's touch starved, maybe he knows his mother wouldn't approve of you if you were real, or maybe there's something about you that, deep down, makes him feel safe.
He doesn't actually have any of your cards. His only cards he has are from his initial ten pull that the game gave him. But he read through the story, and that's all he needs for now.
Tumblr media
Cater also kidnapped his phone to download the game.  He only plays while he's waiting for things in the oven to finish up. So he actually plays a lot, but in short intervals.
He thinks you'd help him with his jobs. Or maybe you wouldn't, and you'd cause more trouble. He understands it would depend on your mood. But he's along for the ride.
He drew your basic SSR in his first ten pull, and he's satisfied with that. He never plays events, because he just doesn't have time or energy for it. He can just see pictures and the stories that come with online, without having to invest the effort.
For the last unbirthday party, he made a cake loosely I spired by you and your color scheme. The only person who noticed was Cater, who smirked at him the entire time. Trey was definitely not blushing when Cater confronted him about it.
Tumblr media
The second the game was starting to look like it'd go viral, it was on Carter's phone, and his magicam. He did a thorough review, and gave it  five stars! The game devs were thrilled and reached out to him for a sponsorship. He's been regularly sponsored ever since.
He has modeled several looks based on your colors. He's doing the twisted wonderland version of Disney bounding for you. The first time he did, your voice actor reached out to him. His most viral magicam post is him and your va modeling "Disney bound" looks of a particularly popular event outfit you had.
If he's not on magicam, he's playing your game. He has all your cards, and is neglecting any character that isn't you. (Apologies to your peers, he just isn't interested) He giggles a little whenever your character greets him on the home screen. He thinks you're so sweet, he just wants to scoop you up and protect you from all the bad in the world.
Speaking of…he loves to read angst fanfiction where he comes to your rescue or cheers you up. He is definitely not crying and thinking about his own depression. His eyes are just pissing.
Having befriended the devs and your va, there's talk of having him as a VA when the anime comes out… so follow for announcements on his magicam!
Tumblr media
Thought you were hot. Downloaded the game for that reason, and that reason alone.  (Sorry guys, I love ace, but irl he's a fuck boy, and you can't change my mind)
A very casual, and secretive, player. Doesn't want anyone to know he's playing, no matter how popular or mainstream it is.
Anyone who the devs or fandom ship with you is blacklisted in his mind. He barely takes care of your cards, but those cards are never used and never looked at.
He has a body pillow of you, but it's hidden under his bed so that Deuce and his roommates can't find it. He's pretty sure they'd make fun of him if they knew (he's right, they would). When all three of his roommates are out of town, or gone home for a short holiday or something, he'll pull it out and cuddle "you".
Tumblr media
You're adorable, hard working, and so kind to those you care about. It was love at first sight for poor Deuce. Sevens, he wishes you were real.He worries his past would scare you off if you were real, though. So he's fine pretending for now.
His mom knows about his like of your character, and got him a chibi plushie of you. It sits on his desk. He's so happy to have it.
He plays a lot, but he's not very good at the battles or rhythm game elements. So he's just an average player. Nothing to write home about.
He is one of the many secret techies of NRC, so he and Idia teamed up to design an otome version of your game. He uses a pseudonym, because he would just die if anyone found out he'd worked on it.
He has half of your basic collection, and one of your event cards. He's so proud of his collection, even though it's not the best one in the world.
Wrote a fan letter to the devs. He got back a poster signed by them and all the va's. He was so happy.

Tumblr media
You have always been the sweetest, most considerate girlfriend, but once a month, your mood took an unmistakable turn.
The day had arrived, and you were in the throes of your period. The cramps were gnawing at your insides, and you felt irritable and moody. It wasn't something you could control, but you hated how it sometimes led to snapping at the person you loved the most—Aaron Warner.
It had been a beautiful, sunny morning, and you guys were enjoying a leisurely breakfast in a cozy kitchen. you had been silent for most of it, and Aaron couldn't help but notice your furrowed brows and tense shoulders. He didn't want to make any sudden moves that might set you off, so he opted for a gentle and understanding approach.
Aaron reached across the table to touch your hand. "Love, are you feeling alright today?"
you glanced up at him, and your eyes were a mix of discomfort and frustration. "I'm fine, Aaron.” you said as you shoved his hand away.
Warner froze and panic quickly running through his body. Did he do something wrong? “Aaron? You never call me that. Are you okay, love? Did I do something wrong or something that upset you? Please tell me—“
“Oh my god! Maybe I just want to Call you by your name. Did you even think of that?” You snapped as you stood up from the chair and quickly ran inside to you and Aaron’s shared bedroom.
Aaron was confused and concerned. As he glanced up to his phone, he saw the date today is.
You have gotten your period.
He knew it was coming. Every month, like clockwork, your mood shifts. But he also knew it was a result of the pain and discomfort you were experiencing, not something you could control.
As much as he wanted to be with you right now to ease your pain, Aaron knew that you needed your space to cool off.
As he retreated to give you a space, he decided to take care of you the best way he knew how. Aaron knew your favorite remedies, and he set to work immediately. First, he fetched a heating pad and adjusted it to the perfect temperature. Then, he started preparing your favorite comfort food—a warm, hearty bowl of tomato soup with grilled cheese.
Once the food was ready, he plated it beautifully in a tray and brought it to you in the bedroom. He knocked first, not wanting to upset you more.
“My love? It’s me. Can I enter please?” He asked softly.
“Aaron—? Please come in.” You answered with a shaky voice. Warner entered the room and God, you look so wrecked. Oh, his poor love.
“Oh, my love,” he said gently as he put the tray to the side of the bed and quickly hugged you. You quickly buried your face to his chest as he played with your hair and drew circles to your back as he whispered sweet nothings to your ear.
“Shh, I’m here now, love. Don’t worry.”
“Baby, I’m sorry about earl—“ he cut you off with a soft kiss.
“Don’t worry about it, my beloved.” Aaron spoke softly, his voice as tender as the dawn's first light. "I know you're in pain, Love. I've been keeping track, and I understand how you feel."
you blinked, her frustration waning as you realized Aaron's patience. "I'm just... I don't know, everything feels annoying right now."
He nodded, his gaze unwavering. "I get it. But please, love, don't pick fights with me. We don't have to make today any harder than it already is."
you sighed and let your guard down, your shoulders relaxing. “I'm sorry, darling. You're right. I shouldn't take it out on you."
He offered a reassuring smile. “No need to apologize, Love. I know it's not you. Now, I have something to help you feel better, maybe? I got your favorite comfort food. I thought it might help soothe you.”
“Oh, love, you don’t need to—“
“But I wanted to. I wanna help you, okay?”
your eyes softened, appreciating his understanding and willingness to ease your discomfort. " Thank you, I love you.”
With a loving glance, he rose from his seat and pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead. "I know, I love you, too. So much. You have my heart. Please don’t ever give it back."
He then once again sat beside you, and you enjoyed the meal. You and him didn't talk much, but the simple act of him being there for you was enough to communicate his affection and support.
After you have eaten, Aaron suggested, "How about a warm bath? It might help with your cramps."
you nodded, grateful for the suggestion. "That sounds lovely."
Aaron carefully drew a bath for you, making sure the water was just the right temperature. He added some of your favorite bath salts, filling the room with a soothing fragrance. Then he helped you undress and gently guided you into the bath.
As you relaxed in the warm water, Aaron perched himself on the edge of the tub, gently massaging your shoulders and neck, providing relief from the tension that had built up in your muscles.
"You're incredible, Aaron," you whispered, your eyes heavy with contentment.
He planted a loving kiss on your temple. "And you're worth every bit of it, Love."
After your bath, he gave you his soft clothes as you guys went to the living room, where Aaron had already set up a cozy nest of blankets and pillows. He picked out some of your favorite movies and let you choose which one you guys would watch. As the film played, both of you nestled close on the couch, your head resting on Aaron's chest.
With his fingers, Aaron traced soothing circles on your back, calming your racing heart.
"You make everything better, darling," you whispered during a quiet moment in the movie.
He smiled, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "I'll always take care of you, Love. It's a promise,"
“And please, if you are hurting, please do tell me. I may not know what it feels like, but I want to be there for you, I want to understand what you are going through.” He continued as his green eyes looked at yours like it’s the whole universe.
“I will, thank you, love.” You said as you hugged him.
“You can talk to me or not talk to me, but I am here with you until the end of the world. And if you are too tired to speak, just sit next to me in silence. Okay?”
“Roger that, sweetheart.” You said as you gestured a salute with a laugh.
Warner laughed with you as he pulled you closer. “You’re impossible.” He teased.
As the hours melted away, your cramps gradually eased, thanks to Aaron's tender care and support. you were reminded once again how fortunate you were to have a partner who could navigate your moods and take care of you, even at your worst.
Later, you guys retired to their bedroom, where Aaron had prepared a soft, welcoming bed. He tucked you in, making sure you were comfortable and warm. As you settled into the embrace of the shared warmth, Aaron held you close, his arms wrapped protectively around you.
"I love you so much, my love.” he murmured, his voice soft and filled with affection.
"I love you too, pretty boy," you replied.

Chapter 17
A knock on your office door drew your attention, and you looked up from the computer to see Payback standing there. “Hey!”
“Hi,” he said. “Coyote and I are going to the food court in twenty. Did you want to go?”
“I’ve already got lunch plans with my team. Sorry.”
“No problem, just wanted to check. You feeling okay today?” Smiling, you pushed back from your desk and touched your stomach.
“Pretty good. Tired, but good. You?”
“Same. Ready for the weekend. Got a date lined up.”
“Oooh, really?” you smirked. He grinned and told you about the woman he was meeting up with for coffee. You couldn’t help but think back to that fateful day Jake had crashed your coffee date. After a few minutes, he glanced at his phone and grimaced.
“Coyote’s ready. Sure you don’t want me to pick anything up for you?” When you declined, he nodded. “Alright. Oh, and Bob wanted me to tell you that he’s going to stop by tonight to mow the lawn.”
“What?” you frowned. “He doesn’t need to do that.” In all honesty, the yard did need to be addressed. Jake had mowed it shortly before he left, but it was getting out of control. You told yourself that you’d take care of it every weekend but never got around to it.
“We got a schedule set up, and Bob’s up first. Said he’d be by after work.”
“Reuben,” you sighed before pressing your lips together as tears sprang to your eyes. “You don’t - ”
“Nope,” he cut you off. “Just expect one of us every other week. We should have already done it.” Sighing, you pushed out of your chair and crossed the office, throwing your arms around him.
“You guys are the best.”
“Just looking out for our own,” he shrugged, squeezing you tightly.
Bob indeed showed up after work and borrowed Jake’s keys to move the truck from the garage and retrieve the lawnmower. While he zigzagged across the yard before making his way into the back of the house, you ordered pizza. It took only the slightest bit of arm twisting to get him to accept the thank you dinner, but he eventually yielded.
It wasn’t until you were walking back to the truck later that weekend after a trip to the grocery store that you noticed the yellow sticker on the back window.
Baby on Board.
“This is my favorite thing ever.”
“Ever?” Jake smirked.
“Ever,” you sighed, wiggling to get more comfortable and closing your eyes in contentment. “It’s never leaving our bed. You’ll have to bury me with it.” Chuckling, your husband rolled his eyes fondly at the sight of you cuddling your pregnancy pillow.
“Not gonna leave a lot of room for me with that thing.” Lazily, you waved your hand.
“You can sleep in the guest bedroom.” At that, he laughed as you tried to suppress a smile, opening one eye to see his grin.
“I see how it is - I’m gone for six weeks, and you’re already moving me out permanently.”
“It’s not the you being gone that’s getting you kicked out - it’s the you doing this,” you correct, placing a hand on your stomach. At twenty weeks, you were undoubtedly feeling less comfortable. After cruising some parenting boards and talking to your coworkers, they’d suggested getting a pillow to support you while you slept and to get it so you were used to it when it would be harder to get out of bed. So, after some research, you’d splurged on a huge U-shaped pillow. In addition to helping the bed feel less empty, having something curled around you was comforting - with the added benefit of helping with your ligament pain and heartburn.
“That was both of us,” Jake replied. His expression softened, and he let out a sigh. “It sucks that they rescheduled your appointment.”
Pressing your face into the pillow, you shrugged. “I know, but only two more weeks until we find out if we’re having an Oliver or Sloane.”
“And your mom wasn’t able to change her ticket?”
“No,” you sighed. “But it’s fine. We’ll work on the nursery or something.” Once you’d told your mother the date of the scheduled anatomy scan, she quickly booked a plane ticket to be by your side.
“You shouldn’t be alone for that,” she’d said, brushing off your weak attempt to talk her out of it. “Dad would come too but he’s going to be in Huntsville that week covering for another shop.” He sometimes went to other sites as a contractor to help with coverage and staffing shortages. Mom had let slip that he turned down a trip to England to make sure he was stateside when you gave birth.
“What’s wrong with the nursery?” Jake asked. He’d set up the crib and changing table before he left, and you’d turned down his offer to paint.
“Nothing, just want to get it cleaned up and organized. It’s become a catch-all for everything, and Mom wants to go shopping, so I have a feeling that we’ll be getting a lot more stuff.” It was his turn to groan as he scrubbed a hand down his face.
“Tell her she doesn’t need to do that.”
“Oh, I’ve tried. But you try talking her out of it,” you scoffed before adopting a mocking tone. “‘Oh, it’s my first grandbaby! I’m allowed to spoil them!’” He chuckled, and you sat up, raising an eyebrow at the laptop camera. “Speaking of - Lina called me.”
A weary look crossed Jake’s face at the mention of his sister. “Yeah? What’d she want?”
“Apparently, your mother isn’t happy about the lack of updates she’s getting about the baby. I’ve gotten a request to send her an updated picture every week.”
“Damn it,” he grumbled. He’d finally gotten around to calling his parents the weekend before. His mom had pestered him for information about the pregnancy, and he’d sent her a few pictures you’d shared to keep her happy. Now, it seemed like she was ready to push in more, especially if she was enlisting Lina. “No. If you don’t want to, don’t do it.”
“I don’t know. I don’t… I mean, my parents aren’t getting a picture every week, but I talk to them all the time so they know what’s going on. I have your mom’s number so I can text her an update every once in a while. But they’re your family, what do you think?”
While he knew that his mother wanted to be involved, the idea of having you be the one in contact with her made Jake anxious. The last thing he wanted was for you to be more stressed because of his family, especially when he wasn’t there to step in. “Lemme…lemme think about it,” he said after a long moment.
“Okay,” you replied, giving him a soft smile. “I love you.”
“I love you too, darlin’. I’ve gotta get back to work in a minute, so let me talk to the baby.” Heaving an exaggerated sigh, you lifted the arm of the pregnancy pillow and slid across the bed. Propped against the pillows, you set the laptop on your legs and angled the screen so your stomach was the central picture. Jake grinned at the sight. “Hey, Sloane - ”
“Oliver.”
“Sloane. I love you, baby girl. I can’t wait to see the new pictures of you soon. Keep bein’ nice to Mama.”
“Your daddy’s going to call you Sloane for a little longer, Ollie,” you chuckled, placing a hand on your stomach. “I promise, Mama’s gonna make him eat his words for being wrong about you.”
“Daddy’s gonna try not to rub it in Mama’s face when he’s right.”
“Good thing we’re not going to have to put that to the test since you aren’t going to be right.”
“I’m sorry,” he smirked, “I’m trying to have a conversation with my daughter.”
“Whatever. We’ll know soon enough just how wrong you are.”
“More like how wrong you are, darlin’.”
“Wanna bet?” you challenged, tilting the screen so you could see one another better.
“What are the terms?”
“If he’s a boy, I want…” your gaze drifted to the side of the bed as you chewed your lip. Aware that he was in a public place again, even with headphones on, you wanted to be coy. “I want to use my favorite thing on you three times, whenever I choose. Wrists and ankles.”
Heat flared in Jake’s gaze, and you squirmed, thighs pressing together at the memory of him held down by the restraints tucked under the mattress. He lifted his hand slowly and ran his thumb along his lower lip before licking it. After clearing his throat, he nodded. “Since I know I’m right, I’ll accept that. And I want a video when I’m right.”
“A video?”
“With the present I sent you.” His voice was low and rough with barely restrained lust. It was your turn to blush. When you came home from work on Monday, there’d been a box on the front porch. Inside was a vibrator with clit suction, with a note from your husband saying it would have to do until he got home. You thoroughly enjoyed your gift once it was charged and you found a battery for the small remote. It may have been a bit unkind to send him a picture of you after using it, a blissful expression on your face after months of subpar orgasms, as a thank you.
“Deal.”
“Hangman - mail!” Fritz said, shoving a cardboard envelope into his chest as they stood on the flight deck for the steel beach picnic. Jake quickly clapped a hand on the envelope, nearly dumping his plate with his burger and potato salad.
“Thanks,” he grumbled, shifting the envelope under his arm and moving through the line. After grabbing a beer from the giant cistern, he made his way to where Mav and Rooster were sitting on the railing between the cornhole station and where some of the officers were hitting golf balls off the ship. The other pilots they’d been training with milled about, chatting and sipping their drinks. After two months at sea, the higher ups had chosen to throw a morale day for the carrier, knowing that they would soon be drilling down for the war games.
“What’s that?” Mav asked, spying the package tucked under his arm as Jake set his drink and plate beside him.
“No idea. Wasn’t expecting anything,” he shrugged. At the sight of your name on the return address, he frowned.
“Divorce papers?” Rooster teased, and quickly jerked his leg out of the way when Mav moved as though to kick him. “Kidding, kidding. Damn.” Shaking his head, Jake tore open the tab and glanced inside to see a white envelope.
DO NOT OPEN BEFORE CALLING ME was written across the front of it, and when he flipped it over, he saw more writing across the seam. I DON’T CARE WHAT TIME IT IS, CALL ME ASAP
Glancing at his watch, he quickly did the time conversion - Saturday at 1:25PM for him would be just about 8:30PM Friday night at home. He’d already been planning on giving you a call as soon as he was done eating, so the cell was in his pocket. When he turned it on, he could see that the wifi extended onto the deck. “Be right back,” he said, stepping away from the two men and lifting the phone to call you.
You answered on the second ring. “Hey!”
“Hey, darlin’. Just got the letter you sent that I’m not allowed to open without calling you. Everything okay?”
“Oh my god!” you squealed. “Finally!” He could hear people in the background and smirked.
“Where are you?”
“Javy’s - I told you he was having us all over tonight.”
“That’s right, I forgot. So, can I open this letter?”
“Wait, I need to see you open it. Can you do a video call?”
“It’s, uh, a little loud on the flight deck, but I can manage it.”
“Okay. Is there someone there who can hold the phone for you?”
“Darlin’, what’s in the letter?” Jake asked, turning back to Mav and Rooster. Rather than answer, he heard the phone beep and pulled it away to see that you’d started a video call. He quickly answered, grinning at your flushed face. “Hey, Mama.”
“Hey,” you beamed.
“Hangman!” Coyote yelled, throwing his arm around you and waving. “Long time no see, man. How’s deployment?”
“Later, Javy,” you said, quickly brushing off the other man. “I love you, but I promise you, this is more important.” The aviator held up his hands and chuckled, and Jake could see his friends in the background - Bob, Phoenix, and Payback were lounging on the couch.
“Why’s this envelope so important?” Jake asked, holding it up. Your eyes widened and you took a deep breath.
“So I wasn’t exactly honest with you a couple weeks ago. The anatomy scan wasn’t rescheduled - Mom and I went to the appointment on the original date.”
Jake felt his heart stop as his eyebrows shot up. “Y-you went to the anatomy scan already? It’s not this week?”
“I had Mom record the whole appointment, and I promise you that I will send it to you as soon as we’re off this call,” you said quickly.
“So you know what we’re having?”
“No,” you grinned. “I have no idea and it’s been killing me for the last two weeks. I had Amanda put the ultrasound pictures and the gender in that envelope instead of telling me. We went right from the doctor’s office to the post office to mail that because I wasn’t going to be able to keep myself from looking at it.” Words failed him as came to a stop in front of his friends, mouth hanging open. As the silence dragged on, your smile began to falter. “Baby, are you mad? I thought - ”
“You’re letting me find out the gender first?” he finally asked.
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Jake heard someone shout in the background, and you whipped around to see Phoenix standing, arms thrown out to hush the other men. “Are you finding out if you’re having a boy or a girl right now?”
“What?” Rooster demanded, perking up at the sound of his best friend’s voice. Jake watched as you turned back to the camera and smiled shyly.
“Why does this feel like an impromptu gender reveal party?”
“Sure seems like it is,” he grinned. “Mama, you seriously don’t know what we’re having?”
“I seriously don’t know. I closed my eyes when Amanda was doing that part of the scan.”
“I fucking love you, darlin’. You okay with lettin’ these assholes listen in?”
“I am if you are.”
“He is,” Payback quickly answered, stepping up behind you.
“Here, I’ll hold the phone so you can open it,” Mav offered, standing and holding out his hand. Jake met the man’s gaze and grinned, pushing his sunglasses to the top of his head.
“Gonna give the phone to Mav real quick. I love you.”
“I love you too. I’m going to record this so we can send it to our parents. Now hurry up!” The older man greeted you when he was handed the phone and quickly flipped the camera, giving the young father a thumbs up when he was in frame.
“Ready when you are, Hangman.”
Taking a deep breath, Jake stared at the camera and grinned. “Alright, here we go.” The envelope tore easily in his hand, and he quickly unfurled the ultrasound pictures. He drank in the newest images of his baby, seeing their little fingers and nose.
When he reached the last picture, he felt tears pricking his eyes as his heart soared. Unable to stop himself, he threw his arms up in the air and crowed, pumping his fist as he took a few steps away from the group. He knew he was drawing attention but couldn’t care. He could hear Rooster and Mav laughing as he turned on his heel and quickly made his way back, grabbing the phone.
Jake watched as you laughed and wiped tears from your eyes. As soon as the camera flipped so he was in frame, you spoke at the same time.
“We’re having a girl!”
“It’s a girl!”
He was vaguely aware of getting slapped on the back, and his friends laughing behind you, but Jake only had eyes for you. “Mama, we’re having a little girl.”
“Sloane Elizabeth,” you said through tears, placing a hand on your stomach and pressing against your daughter. “I guess you were right.”
“I told you aviators have daughters,” he beamed. “Wish I was there with you, darlin’.”
“Me too, babe.”
“Thank you, for letting me do that. I…” Emotion clogged his throat and he swallowed hard.
“I know, Jake. But we both know you’d be here if you could.”
“We’re a third of the way done, darlin’.”
“Two down, four to go.”
True to your word, you sent Jake the video of the appointment as soon as you hung up. He smiled, beer bottle dangling from his fingers, and watched as Amanda the ultrasound tech pressed the probe against your stomach and pointed out Sloane’s features. He had to wipe away tears when he heard his daughter’s heartbeat.
And, just like you’d said, when it came time to find out the gender, you’d thrown an arm over your eyes to keep from peeking.
Don’t forget our bet, Mrs. Seresin, he texted a few hours later when lying in his berth after watching the video for the fourth time. The ultrasound pictures were carefully folded and resting beside him. He’d already picked out the one he’d be putting up in his jet, right next to the picture of him carrying you across the front yard after the wedding, his hat perched on your head as you kissed him.
A few minutes later, his phone vibrated with your response. A bet’s a bet, Tex. Any requests?

Author's Note: They're having a girl! That was what the poll I put out about a month ago landed on, and I'm happy to say that it was in line with the original idea. The image of Jake finding out that he was going to have a daughter while on the carrier was actually the first thing that made me want to write this fic.
I also really love Bob putting the Baby on Board sign on Jake's truck. Wonder how long it'll take him to notice it when he gets back 🤔
