Unlike Catnap, Dogday immediately takes a big bite out of one of the slices since the watermelon was already cut. Catnap hesitates, just staring at the grapes as if they're not right to eat..

Gray’s Pets

Gray has found that he can self-medicate with cats, and he has become very sad in the last few months. His anguish is only helped by his cats and Ash most days, though Greer is trying to reach out to him.

GRAZZLEGRITCH “GRAZZ”/”GRAZZLE”

Grazzlegritch is as much a mischief maker as Gray, and enjoys bullying the other animals in the house. He is Gray’s familiar, and they can share sight much like his mother does with his mice. Grazzle exclusively speaks Polish, and Gray will talk to him in it out loud. He chitters a lot and has a very nasally purr. His favorite target is Mis, because he believes that he’s an easy target. To say he has distaste for his ‘younger siblings’ that Gray brought home is an understatement, and he has tried many a time to put the kittens in the kitchen garbage. Usually he is stopped by one of the other cats, or Monster’s barking.

COSMOS “BUG”

Bug is a Cornish Rex like Grazzle, and the only boy out of the kittens. He enjoys playing and cuddling with Mis, and is a rather avid fan of Bazhira. He does try to be careful of her eye, though he does get excited and pounce her often.

POPPY, IRIS, ANGELONIA (ANGEL)

Gray’s three girls, and sisters of Bug. They are very affectionate and purr at the slightest touch. Poppy can be kind of skittish, and Grazzle picks on her the most. Iris is a big explorer and loves to find new, exciting places. When Mis is under the blanket and moves, she is compelled to pounce on him, and lives for his Meeps. Angel is quiet and prefers to lounge around, until she doesn’t. She gets the zoomies less frequently than her siblings, and is the most spirited fighter. She’s smacked Grazz on a few occasions, and he dislikes her the most.

GNIĆ

Gnić (Knee-Shh) means ‘Rot’ in Polish, and Gray ended up creating him during his depressive episode so he wouldn’t be so lonely. Nelay is his ‘brother,’ in the same way that Grazzle is their sibling. He enjoys hunting with Gray and Ash, and has a very jaunty walk. He prefers praise and being touched, and likes when Gray pets his teeth.

ZGNIŁY “Nelay”

Zgniły, or “Nelay” for people who struggle with Polish, means ‘Putrid.’ He takes control of most situations with Gnić, the default leader if Gray or Grazzle are not present. He and Gnić actually get along with Grazzle, as they will listen to him and do his bidding. They patrol the neighborhood often.

oh people of palestine!

your flag was forbidden

so you waved watermelons instead

because you are red

like the poppies growing on the bank

and the fresh strawberries you grew

and your blood spilled on the concrete

red

like the inside of a watermelon

because you are black

like the silk head scarves you wear

and your embroidered thobes

and the smoke covering the rubble

black

like the seeds of a watermelon

because you are white

like the fabric of your keffiyeh

and risen bread dough

and the shrouds you wrapped your children in

white

like a rind of a watermelon

because you are green

like the fresh olives you grow

and the za’atar you slather on your bread

My finished piece: “‘Collateral Damage,’ Our Tax Dollars At Work.”It is a series of portraits of Palestinian children murdered by Israel. Much thanks to @we_are_not_numbers and @rouhicairo (both on Instagram) for sharing their pictures and making sure we remember their names.

Alongside their portraits and names, I have included symbols of Palestine. The oranges, lemons, and olives are all plants which grow there and are important to their culture and economy. The watermelon is a symbol of their national colors due to Israel’s ban on their flag prior to 1992. The key represents the Nakba and the homes these children’s ancestors were driven from. The kufiya is an important symbol of national pride and struggle. The poppies represent mourning and remembrance. The tatreez design is based on traditional embroidery on a pouch made by Palestinian artisans who work for Hygge Cave.

All of this was painted over print outs of the list of dead, which I glued to the canvas. These children and all the people being killed in Gaza are more than numbers. They are people with full lives, hopes, and families. And they are being slaughtered en masse alongside their rich culture and heritage.

The watermelon first emerged as a symbol of Palestine after the six day war in 1967. Israel made public displays of the Palestinian flag illegal so Palestinians would circumvent the ban by using the watermelon, which has the same four colors. I figured it was about time I added a watermelon to my collection, it seems like every shop in this niche has their own version of it. Also the friend I am fundraising for absolutely adores watermelon, he'll eat a whole big one a day during the summer. We grabbed one last second for a hike one time and ate the whole thing with our bare hands out in the woods, it's a really nice memory. So this seems extra fitting.

As usual, ALL PROCEEDS from this design are for this Palestinian friend, to help his girlfriend afford to join him safely in America and to help his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the increasing Israeli raids in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries.
