What if the COM is 621's voice? Or the closest thing to it.

Consider, 621 is heavily augmented. Built and designed to serve as a killing machine, to obey instructions. Until they steal the name "Raven," they are just a serial number; one of several. There's no need for a killing machine to speak.

But there needs to be some communication. An AC pilot can't afford to be distracted by a visual warning, so maybe it's more efficient to be told when their ammo is low. Similarly, their handler can listen for radio status updates while monitoring the wider battlefield: how many repair kits a pilot has used, how much damage they have taken, how many opponents remain, etc.

So it makes the most sense for AC pilots like 621 to just communicate through their COM. It doesn't matter what they think, what matters is whether the AC is ready for combat.

How much fiction exists in the Ninth?

Because Harrow’s dreams had to come from somewhere, right? I know that we just kinda agree that Tamsyn Muir added a coffee shop au because that’s a classic fanfic trope but in universe Harrow had to have some kind of baseline for it, right ?

I think that Harrow’s mind went through the alternate universes like this;

Alternative Canaan; which is her most detailed dream and stable with the least amount of Gideon. Her mind is completely focused on keeping Gideon’s memory out. It functions only as a way for Harrow to ‘remember’ how she got where she currently is. After that bubble pops she’s unable to keep Gideon’s memory out and it slowly leaks through until it’s the main plot of the dream because those are her deepest dreams that she’d never speak of consciously.

This is a long way for me to say that Harrow has probably read romances before and innocent coffee shop style romances with no real stakes are her favorite.

Coffee shop romances being kinda common would totally make sense in universe because it’s bits of culture that have been divorced of their original context

something about Chip dying the minute he finally has something to live for just kills me.

how many times has death been held over his head? how many times did he stare it right in the face and glare because who cares? who cares if he dies? he certainly doesn’t. price doesnt. no one would even notice. he could be gone in a matter of seconds and he never would’ve made a difference. and that feels bad.

so he changes. he remembers the black rose and he gives himself something to live for. he gives himself something to work for. he befriends Jay and Gillion. he helps people. and eventually he is well known. he’s seen enough wanted posters to know that. his mark is made. and not only that, but he meets the most incredible people. people who he can aspire to be like. and people who care so much for him that they’ll follow him to the Black Sea and back just to help him find Arlin. they don’t have to. but they do anyway. and with these people beside him Chip is happy. and chip is loved .

and then he dies. and he is constantly as risk of losing everything. he can already feel it slipping away. at 19 years old Chip James finally tastes death. and he wishes it tastes bitter, or vile. he just wishes it tastes of something other than the complete nothingness that surrounds him.
