big fan of stories that are like fate is just the propaganda that allows the powerful to maintain control of the oppressed but also fate is just your childhood trauma driving you to recreate the same dysfunctional cycles over and over again but also fate is not an illusion fate is a real force that you live with every day and there are real consequences for defying it but also fate is just your father trying to tell you he knows you better than you know yourself. and he's wrong

thank you for putting Loki on the poll!! and I wish everyone's blorbos luck! just know- we're all doomed here no matter who wins!
THERE WAS NO SCENARIO IN WHICH I WOULD NOT HAVE PUT LOKI IN THIS POLL I still can't believe she got killed by birds, but the bird fans have been very kind and polite and also really really funny so they get their bird girlie back too c: just not on the same side of the bracket as Loki. I can't go through it again
I'm really hoping these matchups are fun! Everyone's blorbo is so so so so doomed it's ridiculous I hope they all become besties -R

Some missed opportunities for Norse Mythology references in the Loki S2 Finale
I want to quickly preface this by saying the Loki show never claimed to be about or even incorporate more than passing nods to Norse mythology, so the following "missed opportunities" are more things that I think could have been cool and were perhaps within reach as references, but that even at my most wildly optimistic I didn't and still don't really expect because the show has been so very clear on this front. It's not fair to say these are flaws because the show never pretended to be about Norse mythology. NEVERTHELESS, because I'm a big nerd:
1) Ragnarok - All respect to Waititi and Thor III, it was a great interpretation of the myth, but I've always longed for something a little closer to the doom and mysticism of the mythology and the Loki S2 finale came tantalizingly close to invoking it, but fell short of actually using the word. Because Ragnarok isn't just about the fall of the gods, it's about the destruction and rebirth of the world. "After [the events of Ragnarok], the world will rise again, cleansed and fertile, the surviving and returning gods will meet, and the world will be repopulated by two human survivors."
Gee does that sound familiar! Almost like destroying all of the timelines to create them anew! Almost like that's what Sylvie was invoking by telling him it's better to accept destruction rather than accept imprisonment, and to build something new out of the ashes.
That's Ragnarok. That's literally Ragnarok and they invoked it in so many ways there short of actually using the damn word.
Loki, the god destined to bring about Ragnarok, proceeding to directly bring down the current timeline by destroying and then renewing it with a male and female survivor to help rebuild (visualized with Mobius and Sylvie's little chat at the end, even if it's the TVA they helped rebuild not the human population) sure does sound astonishingly close to invoking the story of Ragnarok.
And even though I'm bummed they never called it Ragnarok, I completely understand why! Ragnarok has kinda already happened in the MCU (never mind that Ragnarok itself is cyclical and will come again, but I digress)! I'd even go so far as to guess that earlier drafts probably did make it clearer but the thread, except for its bones and outline, were abandoned or left unnamed explicitly because it would be confusing for those not familiar with the myth or who would conflate Ragnarok with its Thor III invocation. Alas.
2) Loki bound - Already sort of invoked in Thor II with Loki imprisoned, which is why I don't think any more overt reference was made, but Loki was rather famously bound up in mythology. In this case, in a cave with a snake's poison dripping into his mouth. Not saying Loki bound to his throne of time needed to be conflated with how he was imprisoned until Ragnarok in the myhology, but the imprisonment parallel is there.
3) Loki becomes the new Odin, sacrificed upon Yggrasil - "The generally accepted meaning of Old Norse Yggdrasill is "Odin's horse", meaning "gallows". This interpretation comes about because drasill means "horse" and Ygg(r) is one of Odin's many names. The Poetic Edda poem Hávaml describes how Odin sacrificed himself by hanging from a tree, making this tree Odin's gallows. This tree may have been Yggdrasil." (source)
IE, Loki has sacrificed himself upon the world tree for power and knowledge and for the sake of the world. In this, unlike in the mythology where Loki is not Odin's son, Loki ascends to a parallel of his father's throne to follow in his legacy, having finally learned his father's lessons about rulership and self-sacrifice. Perhaps like the mythological Odin, we will learn that in making this self-sacrifice, Loki too has gained phenomenal knowledge and power?
4) Ratatoskr - This is more foward-looking and I don't in a million years think they'll do it but it would be so cool - so cool - if at some later point Loki has a friend or a servant or a squirrel form or idk, something that invokes Ratatoskr, the squirrel that lives in the World Tree and freely travels up and down its branches delivering messages. Please, MCU, give Loki a little squirrel friend??

Elder ᚠᚱᛖᛁᛃᚨ Younger ᚠᚱᛁᛁᛁᛅ
Freyja/Frøya (The Lady)
Epithets And Titles
Gullveig (gold-greed) Her more magical and ruthless side is closely associated with fire due to her being burned but not harmed
Vanadis (lady of the Vanir) Her neural side has a little bit of all her aspects and is what you normally call on
Gefn (giver) Her motherly giving side associated with fertility and harvests etc
Horn (flax) Her side associated with Love, sex, and playfulness
Mardoll (root word Marr meaning sea. Sea bright) One of her sides associated with death and war
Syr (sow)
Valfreyja (Lady of the Slain) Another side associated with Death and War
Lady of fire
Heid (Völva from Voluspa)
Thrung
Lady of the Disir
Skialf
Queen of Folkvangr
Chief of the Vanir
Queen of the valkyrie
Possessor of the fallen
Ruling/Domain
Folkvangr is her realm and Sessrumnir is her hall.
(and is sometimes said to be where she takes her half of the dead but this is disputed)
Family
Njord is her father and her mother is never mentioned but is speculated to be Skadi or Njords sister, an unnamed Vanir goddess. Her twin is Frey(r). She has 2 daughters Hnoss and Gersemi both of which translate to "treasure" though only mentioned in Christian sources and Gersemi is only mentioned once. In the Eddas, it says she has a husband named Oðr which is one of Odin's names, and gets into the Frigga and Freyja debate.
History
I won't get too much into the debate on her and Frigga but by the myths, they are different and separate beings. Historically they were possibly the same once and split over time but they are not the same now.
Frøya has a necklace she always wears. Its name is Brisgamen is a torc/necklace made by the dwarves and frøya supposedly spent a night with each of them who made it to get Brisingamen. In other myths Thor wears it dressed as Frøya during the fake wedding to Thrym the giant who stole Thor's hammer, then when Loki stole it and gave it to Odin when Odin made her start a war to get it back.
She also had a Boar named Hildisvini "Battle-swine" which she turned her husband oðr into and rode in one of the myths.
In the Grimnismal translation, it says "then" Odin picks not "and" giving the idea Freyja picks first but it's never mentioned otherwise. But modernly we accept that she does have the first pick.
Gullveig is believed to be another name for frøya she was a sorceress who predicted the Æsir, Vanir war and was burned alive 3 times by the Æsir each time coming back to life and was struck by spears and still didn't die.
She, like Odin, was known to use many different names throughout the myths and in her travels.
She's the one who taught Odin and the other Æsir gods how to do Seidr magic.
After the Æsir, Vanir war they exchanged hostages, and Frøya, Njordh, and Frey went to live with the Æsir in Asgard.
It's rumored but never confirmed if Freyr and Freyja have Elven ancestors. But she is NOT a valkyrie; the only sources with that are later Christian sources; this is believed to be the same thing as making her out to be a love goddess and sexualizing her.
The myths never actually show her as a Vølva but her association with magic gives us the idea she is.
She also had a chariot that was pulled by cats sometimes people believe they’re Lynx.
Historical worship/practice
She had a fertility cult in the Viking age that stopped due to Christianity and a cult that lasted up until Snorri's age and time but that stopped soon after. She and Frigga were called on during childbirth, historically our source coming from a midwife.

Portal to My Heart (Book 1.5) Chapter Seventeen
Loki x Reader
Chapter Seventeen: For the Heart
Summary: Loki and (Y/N) get a chance to talk.
Mouse Note: Can I apologize now? We all know what's happening next.
(Y/N) and Loki walked into Thor’s room as he finished examining his eyepatch.
            “It suits you,” said Loki.
            “Kingly,” said (Y/N).
“Maybe you’re not so bad after all, Brother,” said Thor.
“Maybe not,” said Loki with a smile.
“Thank you,” said Thor, first looking at (Y/N). “You protected my people. I can’t thank you enough.”
(Y/N) smiled. “I care for them, too. It was the least I could do.”
“And thank you, Brother,” said Thor, addressing Loki. “If you were here, I might even give you a hug.” He tossed a small object at him.
            Loki caught it. “I’m here.”
Thor stormed forward and wrapped (Y/N) and Loki into a bear hug before they could protest.
l
The crowd of Asgardians parted and bowed as Thor walked through to his throne at the helm of the ship.
            “Your throne,” said Valkyrie.
            Thor sat down.
“So, King of Asgard,” said Heimdall.
Thor awkwardly turned around and waved at his people.
            “Where to?” asked Heimdall.
“I’m not sure,” said Thor. “Any suggestions? Miek, where are you from?”
“Oh, Miek’s dead,” said Korg. “Yeah, no, I accidentally stepped on him on the bridge. I’ve just felt so guilty, I’ve been carrying him around all day.” Suddenly, Miek raised his head and chittered. “Miek! You’re alive! He’s alive, guys. What was your question again, bro?”
Thor looked back out at the stars and made his decision. “Earth it is.”
l
“So, you’ll be returning to your home,” said Loki to (Y/N) as they walked down the hall to their quarters.
“Earth? I mean, can it really count as my home after so many years? I got pretty used to Asgard,” said (Y/N).
“Isn’t the Midgardian saying ‘the home is where the heart is?’ ” said Loki.
“I don’t think my heart is on Midgard anymore. I had no family or really any friends there. Everything I care about is here,” said (Y/N), absently looking at Loki.
He paused and gazed at her. “You…care about me?”
“Maybe you’re not so bad, Loki,” said (Y/N), smiling. “I guess it’s not just your banter that makes you tolerable.”
“Oh? And what does make me tolerable?” said Loki, taking a step closer.
“Your bravery. I don’t know what happened to the ass that tried to take over my planet, but you did the honorable thing today.” (Y/N) smiled. “I’m glad you changed. I think you’ve become a better person.”
“I’ve always been great,” said Loki.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, but the smile remained. “And there’s that terrible pride. I thought we were going to have a civil discussion.”
“The two of us are never civil,” said Loki. He let a smile creep onto his face. “But I suppose that is what is so entertaining about our friendship.”
“Oh, so I’m still just amusement? How flattering,” teased (Y/N).
“Well, yes, you are amusing,” said Loki. He shifted almost nervously, and (Y/N) took notice.
“Loki?” said (Y/N), prompting him. It seemed like he had more to say.
“I wanted to say thank you,” admitted Loki.
            “Thank you?” repeated (Y/N), confused.
“For protecting the Asgardians,” he clarified.
“Oh. Well, of course I helped them. They’re innocents. I couldn’t let Hela hurt them,” said (Y/N).
“But it’s not just about Hela,” said Loki. (Y/N) paused in confusion and let Loki continue. “It’s about me.”
“You?” (Y/N) knew he’d been terrible in the past, but lately, Loki had been improving and evolving.
“Me.” Loki took a deep breath. “When I acted as Odin, you looked after Asgard. You kept the realms in balance.”
(Y/N) turned red. “I didn’t really do anything, Loki, seriously. I just made sure no one got away with stupid decisions.”
“(Y/N), I would have run rampant as King,” said Loki. “You were the one who protected the people of Asgard and looked after them. You were my dear Advisor, but you were the Asgardians’ true Queen.”
“I’m no queen,” said (Y/N), laughing nervously.
“Yes, you are,” said Loki, reaching out and touching (Y/N)’s wrist. He trailed to her hand. “Thor might have been born to be king, but you were the people’s queen. You still are.” Loki held (Y/N)’s hand lightly. “You are my advisor but their Queen.”
“A queen,” repeated (Y/N), blushing. “You’re really trying to flatter me.”
“I am called Silvertongue,” said Loki. He gazed intently at her. “But this is just me being honest. You are an honorable woman. You are sharp and intelligent, and you see through the lies and manipulations of others. You are precisely what a ruler should be.”
(Y/N) was wondering how much redder she could turn before exploding. “I, uh, wow…That’s a pretty hefty standard.”
“It is the truth,” said Loki. “You are an incredible woman of power and honor.” He wasn’t sure how to convey how he felt without saying the words that would make or break his heart. He loved (Y/N) too much to risk the heartbreak that would accompany rejection. He feared her opinion of him more than any other’s.
“Loki…” murmured (Y/N). “You’re incredible, too. You’ve grown from your mistakes. Not many can say the same.” Her hand slipped in his grip to return the hold.
“I…I have?” said Loki, almost hesitantly.
“Yes. You make mistakes and stumble, but you’ve been helping others and looking after people,” said (Y/N), smiling. “That’s incredible, Loki. Most people aren’t strong enough to change. You should be proud of yourself.”
“I wasn’t even aware of it as I did,” said Loki, holding (Y/N)’s hand tighter.
            “Well, that’s how change works. It’s little-by-little,” said (Y/N).
“Perhaps. But I didn’t change for myself,” said Loki. His green eyes met (Y/N)’s with such intensity and care that it was hard for (Y/N) to not look away nervously.
“No?” The word was hushed, barely a breath. (Y/N) felt something hanging in the air between her and Loki, and she was afraid to break it.
“No.” Loki stepped closer, and his free hand reached to brush her cheek. When (Y/N) didn’t move away, he cupped her face with gentle care. “No, (Y/N), my dear Advisor. I changed for you.”
            “Me?”
“You. You pushed me to be a better person, whether you realized it or not, and somewhere along the line, I began to think of you when making decisions. My change is because of you.” Loki smiled at her. “Thank you, my darling.”
“Oh, Loki,” said (Y/N), reaching up and covering the hand on her cheek.
            “(Y/N),” murmured Loki.
He leaned in slightly, and (Y/N)’s eyes fluttered closed.
Their lips brushed, and their hearts pounded.
“Aha! (Y/N), Loki, I was looking for you—Oh!”
(Y/N) and Loki jumped apart as Thor walked down the hall. They avoided eye-contact and cleared their throats uncomfortably as Thor stared at them.
“Uh…I interrupted something, didn’t I?” said Thor awkwardly.
            “What? No,” (Y/N) laughed nervously.
“Nonsense,” said Loki, clearing his throat uncomfortably.
But both person’s heart thumped sadly at having to leave the moment they had created for just them. Just Loki and (Y/N), together.
Their confession would have to wait for another time.

while i'm thinking about this...
violence centred on necks, a list of occurrences in mcu thor:
thor and loki's neck touch motif:
thor pulls loki out of the helicopter (ie, takes him prisoner) throat-first, and when they land, he throws him to the ground. he then repeatedly grabs loki by the scruff of the neck while shouting at and shaking him. loki does not attempt to defend himself or respond in kind. (A1)
in the same scene, rapidly switching tone but still holding loki by the neck, thor implores loki to stop fighting and come home. (or rather, continues to order him to do so, but more gently.)
thor grabs loki by the neck, covers his mouth, and slams him into a wall. again, loki does not resist, even though this one comes out of nowhere when they're supposedly allies. (T2)
thor repeatedly slams loki into a wall, pins him by his throat, and only just stops himself from hitting him. (during this one, loki cannot defend himself, because his hands are tied.) (T2)
thor holds the back of loki's neck and comforts him while he dies for thor. (not something thor wanted, but it happened regardless. TDW and sacrifice is a whole other post.) (T2)
-
collars:
loki's chains in T2 include a collar with no clear function besides dehumanisation. (*de-personification. you know what i mean.) given loki's jotun heritage and status somewhere along the prisoner-of-war to spoils-of-war spectrum (and odin's attitude to him at this point), this has, at least, connotations of ownership/slavery. :(
"obedience disks" in T3 - these are normally stuck on the neck, function as a shock collar, and used to enslave people. both thor and loki are given one, and both, to at least some extent, participate in the violence towards the other. (loki tries to keep thor on sakaar; thor actually sticks loki's on [though not on his neck] and uses it.)
loki is put in a collar again by the TVA in the loki show. it's not quite a shock collar, but it really looks like one, and it has similar functions. and in this case, loki is again (very literally) a) denied personhood and b) enslaved. :|
-
axes:
in T2, loki says that he expects to be executed, specifically by axe.
hela's only living ally in T3 is her axeman.
after thor loses mjolnir, he replaces it with an axe.
-
misc:
loki (probably) snaps thor's neck using the destroyer in T1.
thanos picks up loki by his throat and snaps his neck in IW.
loki and thor both pick up tony stark by his throat as a means of intimidation (in A1 and A2 respectively). thor does this alarmingly casually. (loki is not casual, but he does try to kill him.)
each of thor's friends threatens/mocks/otherwise disdains loki in quick succession in T2, and sif specifically puts a sword to his throat. (at this point, loki is an unarmed, chained prisoner.)
odin's defeat of laufey ends with his spear pointed at laufey's throat. (the framing of this is paralleled elsewhere, but the weapon isn't directly included.) (T1)

H A P P Y A N N I V E R S A R Y
Loki Laufeyson / Odinson x Reader
Request: None I just had this lying around from ages ago
Summary: Loki is thoroughly fed up with his birth family and comes to you (his witchy spouse) for comfort
Warnings: none
Word Count: 900+
You shuffled around the kitchen, deep in thought, unaware that you were humming a soft tune. You hung yet another bunch of thyme to one of the hooks by the window to dry, taking in its scent for a moment.
Today had been a day of tireless planning and you found comfort in the familiar cooking up of a magical brew.
It was nearing Loki and your fifth anniversary and while he might as well have forgotten, (he had a mysterious principle concerning 'anniversaries are no more special than any other night of courtship',) you were determined to make it your best one yet.
The two of you were both quite the romantics and appreciated the quality in one another greatly, although your shared evenings often had to be spent hidden from prying eyes. You were not the kind of witch Freya was, and as supportive as your husband's mother was of your marriage, Odin - and with him the entire kingdom, apparently - was not.
Therefore, it had been a significant struggle to shape plans that for once didn't take place in an abandoned field or a faraway forest - not that those wouldn't forever be your favourite nights.
But you had a plan now that ought to work. A stunning golden ring, a homemade dinner, a fancy bar with trusted workers, a ballroom reserved just for the two of you with a magical source of music... Yes, it would do just fine.
Tearing you from your thoughts you heard rapid knocking that you assumed stemmed from Loki. Not many even knew the whereabouts of your expertly hidden cottage.
Quickly drying off your hands, you hurried to the door, soothingly calling out: "I'm coming, love. Just a moment."
You fingered the unusual door handle for a few moments before the door swung open, but your cheery smile was met with a menacing scowl.
"What's wrong, my beloved?" you spoke softly, closing the door behind him and then taking his face in your hands. "What has that damned father of yours dared this time?"
A moment's silence, in which he led you to the kitchen, slumping into a chair so that you sat across from him.
"I can't believe him!" he said suddenly, taking you momentarily off guard. "And Thor could have stood up for me, too, you know. But he's just a bloody oath, isn't he? Couldn't say a word against his father. Not until he has the crown, at least."
You laid a gentle hand on his knee, tilting your head so that he might continue.
"It's... That- That man spent minutes listing all the reasons I couldn't have claimed the throne even if my brother couldn't take it before me. I wasn't even speaking of it! I get the feeling he brings it up as often as possible just so that he can humiliate me concerning that topic again and again.
'He said- Oh, so, you see, apparently I'm incompetent, weak, do not know the line where negotiation must end so that war can ensue... and much more, of course. And to top it all off, he said I was unfit for the throne simply because at times I may think and be as a woman might. What reason is that? As if my mother couldn't rule infinitely better than him, not to mention you, or even Sif. He has no right!"
You could see the tears collecting in Loki's eyes so you stood to firmly wrap your arms around him.
"It's not right," he murmured against the fabric of your shirt.
"No, my love, it's not." You glanced back at the kitchen, quickly rethinking your plans. "Let's stay in tonight. I made dinner."
You couldn't completely dispel the tinge of disappointment you felt from all the work that had flourished into planning, but it didn't matter. Whatever he needed.
"Thank you," he said absently, staring through the window. "Do you agree? Is Thor truly that much better? Would you rather have taken-"
You cut him off before he could finish: "No, of course not. I love Thor like my own brother, but he is not clever or witty or handsome like you... neither can he recite poetry or negotiate with a wild bandit as well as he could defeat them. That's all you, darling."
He stared up at you from where he sat, still teary-eyed and nearly awe-struck. "Thank you," he said again, but this time it was barely a whisper.
"I need you to understand that for any fault you may have, I would take you over any other in this world or the next. Do you? Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"And even if you were not fit to be king, which I do not believe, you would be a better one than your father, and you will find yourself talented enough to do anything you set your mind on. All of it."
His hand reached up, cupping your jaw as he smiled, pulling you down gently so that your lips brushed against one another.
"Happy anniversary, love," he breathed.
"Thank you," you answered.

Loki Needs A Hug Masterlist
A Place In Time (ao3) - SnakeCharmer2023 loki/mobius T, 7k
Summary: Loki knew what he'd signed up for, replacing the loom at the end of time and sitting alone on the throne.
But what if the end didn't have to be forever?
A fix-it fic after the ending of series 2, because my heart can't take it.
Beautiful Figments (ao3) - mudgems M, 104k
Summary: “Hold on,” Stark says, attempting flippancy but falling well short of the mark. “I’m confused.”
“I think that makes two of you,” Rhodes says under his breath, but his visible concern remains.
Vision is not confused. If anything, he thinks the situation is suddenly, painfully, clear. “You do not remember yourself, do you?” he asks gently, and Loki finally meets his eyes. The hollow fear Vision sees there is obvious, and he wonders why he did not notice it before.
Broken Beyond Repair (ao3) - kittyhazelnut T, 31k
Summary: Loki had committed treason on a level Asgard had never seen. He would not be welcome back to his home realm. He would remain at the mercy of those he tried to control: the humans, SHIELD, and, of course, HYDRA.
By the time the Avengers come knocking HYDRA's door, Loki's long gone in every sense but the physical. Fortunately, even in his silent, fearful state, he's managed to make some friends. Wanda and Pietro won't let anyone hurt him. The Avengers are nothing but a threat, and Ultron makes them a promise that they'll be free of those so-called heroes soon enough.
(Basically, it's an Age of Ultron au where Wanda and Pietro have adopted a very broken Loki and they're determined to keep him safe.)
Brother (ao3) - Lynsds T, 24k
Summary: Overwhelmed with grief after Loki's apparent suicide, Thor is overjoyed to hear that his brother may be alive, if not well, and invading Midgard. It's not Odin that sends him there, but Frigga, and in this world, Thor is ready to observe and to listen.
It's not just Loki who has a lot of healing to do. But they're not alone anymore, and where there's life, there's hope.
For Eternity (ao3) - himynameisv T, 2k
Summary: Sometime during his centuries of self-imposed time loops, Loki begins to hallucinate Thor.
This is perhaps not the best indication of his current mental status.
Free Fall (ao3) - Daffanddahlodil N/R, 14k
Summary: Loki tries to function after learning of his adoption, but he’s not doing as well as he’d hoped.
Here, Here, and Here (ao3) - AuroraWest M, 68k
Summary: Loki and Thor have returned to Earth after two and a half years in space, and Loki, even after a winter in New Asgard, isn't sure he'll ever feel at home.
It doesn't help that as the alien who invaded New York City in 2012, he's been placed on probation by the UN for six months. If he can go six months without leaving New Asgard and without causing any trouble, he'll be free to visit anywhere he pleases on Earth. It's only six months. He can handle it.
Except Loki is bored. And what harm would it do if he just broke his probation a tiny bit? What are they going to do—send him to prison?
Well, yes. Yes, as it turns out. That's exactly what they're going to do.
In The Dark Alone (ao3) - every_oak_tree G, 17k
Summary: It starts at the end, really, with Ragnarök, with Asgard's fall (but Loki's been falling for longer, hasn't he?). It starts with the Mad Titan and the Statesman's explosion. It starts with a dead brother, his broken body sprawled on a spaceship's floor, miles and miles away from a home that no longer exists.
___ Something stirs inside Loki. He acknowledges that this is what he wants—but not all he wants. A newfound anger makes its way into his heart, surrounding it with an impenetrable wall of ice. He will be stronger this time, ruthless and unforgiving. Because when the world has taken everything, when they have stripped you off your armour and left you for dead, you have nothing more to lose. He can do better—no, he will do better. There is no alternative. You either die a loser or live to see yourself become a winner.
___ Or: where Thor dies at the Stateman instead of Loki, but his death will not go unavenged.
Loved and Lost (ao3) - forever_whippoorwill loki/mobius G, 4k
Summary: Loki hadn't realized how much he had missed the man's comforting presence until he was here and he could see it. Let me sit here, Loki's bones begged, at the sight of Mobius just out in his yard, and watch the wind blow through your hair and ruffle it in all the ways I want to.
He was too tired to keep that thought from running through his mind.
Old Habits (ao3) - Yavvys G, 7k
Summary: Odin knows that Loki will not change - not a cycle, not a hundred cycles later. But still, weak hope and smoldering feelings pull him towards the new guise of his adopted son, and the All-Father goes to visit the reborn god.
Once More, With Feeling (ao3) - NovaWasTaken1 T, 25k
Summary: Loki survives Thanos' attack on the Statesman by the skin of his teeth, the Tesseract, and a suicidal plan to save Asgard or die trying.
This changes less than you might think.
rest your eyes, weary god (ao3) - panthor loki/mobius N/R, 3k
Summary: Something blooms in their chest with that touch, something they try their hardest to push back down. As they walk, Loki thinks about how kind Mobius has been to them tonight. Tender, even. Enough to where they let their guard down enough to sleep in front of him. As much as they hate to admit it, Mobius has shown them more humanity than almost anyone else in their life. Despite where he works, Loki can see the empathy radiating from Mobius.
or
Mobius is just a nice guy.
Stay With Me (ao3) - Bookwormgal T, 17k
Summary: Loki had lost almost everything important to him, one way or another. His place in the timeline, his family, his sense of identity, his purpose, Sylvie... Even his first true friend was snatched away, along with the familiar version of the TVA.
But part of what makes a Loki was that they never give up. He would claw his way back and reclaim some of what was taken from him. So he searched through countless versions of the TVA until he found his way back to the right one. The one that had the right Mobius.
And if fate wished to steal him away in a more permanent way, it would have to fight Loki for him. He refused to lose anything else.
Toil and trouble (ao3) - AnsibleMechanic T, 44k
Summary: “When he made it back to Asgard and managed to outwit Odin himself, he only thought of ensuring his own freedom and survival. When Thor refused the throne (his brother chose the worst time to grow wiser), Loki was still delirious in his glee of finally making the biggest, funniest joke in all the realms – the lying Jotun trickster on the throne, and not a soul suspects it!”
Loki didn’t just eat grapes and watched amateur theatre in his dad’s robes for five years. Everything from TR canon is thrown to the wolves, and we have Loki having mental health consequences of his actions in various locations, with some inter-realm politics thrown in, with eventual relocation to the Avengers Tower (in true 2012 fashion) for more angsting and agonising. Hopefully with some friends we found along the way.
to see the world (as you do) (ao3) - T, 16k
Summary: When Odin finds a newborn babe in the war-torn wasteland that is Jotunheim, he takes it home; Frigga is the one to insist they must treat it as their own, and Odin loves her, so he obliges.
And then she dies, and Odin has no time for a child that only reminds him of the very thing he lost - he barely has time for his own young, grieving son.
So he locks it in the Vault, and calls it a trophy from the frozen realm.
or
All Loki knew for a long, long time were there four walls that held them, and the distorted view into the room beyond - filled with trinkets they couldn't name.
There were flashes of something else, of a woman who held them close and hummed lullabies, of a boy with hair like the sun, and a bright blue sky - but the memories were insubstantial and fleeting, slipping through their fingers like smoke.
You Screamed For So Long We Forgot To Care Anymore (ao3) - GalaxyThreads T, 126k
Summary: Five months after Thor drags his half-dead brother to Earth to plead asylum, things take a turn for the worse. With the older Asgardian out of commission and a sizeable threat overshadowing them, Clint becomes aware of two facts: One: Loki was tortured, mind-controlled, and manipulated into attacking Earth. Two: Loki knows none of this. (gen, no smut)

Colour Grading, Insincerity, and Loki is right and Gabriel is wrong; a Lokiel Meta
It’s the big gun, it’s the mother lode of me ripping apart Unfinished Business frame by frame to feed my shipping and laying out all my thoughts on the matter clearly as can be so maybe I can sway some people sitting on the fence or at least give some context to those who see my posts and go “wtf” because they’re not viewing this through the lens of my insanity. Want to know why these guys haunt me? Here;
Credit where credit is due, the one thing I’ve always really liked about supernatural is how they use colour grading to tell the story, and it’s not really all that secretive that the Gabriel episodes look aesthetically like some of the best episodes because they colour them very specifically to set the tone for them;
Fun
Nonsensical
Insincere
The three big tells that something trickster is afoot in the episode, (and I apologise for the scuffed quality on some of these, I’m skating the tumblr upload rules).
Tumblr media
(Tall Tales 2x15)
Tumblr media
(Mystery spot 3x11)
Tumblr media
(Changing Channels 5x08)
It tells us that whatever is currently happening typically feels very real to those experiencing it, but is actually not at all. This is make believe. It’s a figment of Gabriel’s imagination that he’s whipped up at his own convenience to tell the story he wishes to impart upon the narrative. While this is obvious in the earlier season when they’re still shooting on film and using the dark overlays to create a spooky ambiance, it still follows through to the end for Gabriel until he puts down the trickster label and picks back up the archangel one and officially joins the Winchesters bringing him into the same dark coloured world that we’re used to viewing. There’s a sadness in it, that Gabriel went from all these bright colours to essentially having his spirit snuffed out by Asmodeus, but it gives us a very clear point to reference when things are real and when they’re make believe.
Obviously Gabriel is a liar, we’ve all known that to be true since his very first appearance- but there’s one incident that I talk about often that bothers me deeply but I’ve never really explained why.
Tumblr media
The hotel with the rest of the trickster gang.
Gabriel tells this story three times in a pretty short time span- short enough for Dean to remember and call him out on it in the moment, and every time he tells it the story is altered ever so slightly.
I was alone with porn stars in Monte Carlo
I was alone with Loki and Co in Monte Carlo
I was with porn stars AND Loki n Co in Monte Carlo
He’s always been a very unreliable narrator, but this one was particularly on the nose and when it comes to “continuity errors” Gabriel is always aware of them, he does it on purpose because he wants to get caught. We should ask the question, why did it take you three attempts for us to hear this?
He tells his final iteration of the story in grand bright colours, telling feats of his sexual exploits and how good he is at cards, “and then everyone clapped and cheered for me” and then Loki Judas betrays him because Gabriel is so cool and his brothers are so tough and Loki was scared witless and hoping to avoid bloodshed blah blah blah…
Tumblr media
Here’s what the real world looks like in comparison to Gabriel’s little fantasy he’s got running here-
Tumblr media
This matches the rest of supernatural, this is a realistic portrayal of events through the eyes of Sam and Dean. This is the bitter reality Gabriel is avoiding with his fantastical little displays; he’s a broken little man who is hurt, injured, and scared.
So, Loki tells another variation of this story, yes? Gabriel was the betrayer here, not Loki. Gabriel ran out recklessly and while passing world saving information to the Winchesters, both saving the world AND the vast majority of Loki’s family, he cannot convince Odin to leave and he dies in battle (and like, he would’ve gone to Valhalla can we just unclench a little?). That is why Loki chooses to damn Gabriel to Hell with a very reckless move to attempt to take down an archangel, sell him to a demon, and then cross his fingers and pray his bestie- the 6th most powerful thing in all of creation ever- doesn’t break free from this pitiful demon eventually and come looking for him. But the environment tells another story, look;
Tumblr media
It’s the return of the high vibrancy filter, because this room isn’t real, Loki isn’t real, and neither is the story he’s telling. What are the tricksters, if not liars and showboats?
There’s a huge lack in vulnerability which is what they’re both trying to paint over in these scenes to make themselves cool, to make themselves the victim, to make themselves untouchable. Loki tells a half cocked story about the archangel bastard who took his father, completely detached from any real sort of attachment to Gabriel or Odin- even says himself that he hates Odin! And in a story where we know the ending is Gabriel at the hands of Asmodeus he spends ninety nine percent of the story talking about pornstars. They cannot be vulnerable with these outsiders watching them, they also don’t seem to want to admit to themselves what the crux of the issue is here.
They both want to be the ultimate victim of the situation, they’re painting these half done stories trying to convince an audience (Sam and Dean) that doesn’t care that they are right and the other is wrong—
Until they meet each other;
Tumblr media
You can lie to everyone, but you can’t lie to yourself.
We’re back, grounded in reality in this moment when they come face to face with each other, the lighting darkens and becomes gritty once more meaning all facades are down and what’s transpiring here between them is without tricks, and there’s an honor in that when it is a battle between two very clever tricksters who could make this endlessly complicated if they wanted to. When they fight, Gabriel is next to silent (listening, or trauma response? You can decide) and Loki does all his talking for Gabriel and Gabriel alone. They have no one to impress here, they sent the Winchesters on a fools errand to have this moment alone creating a tense intimacy where Loki shreds Gabriel’s facades and calls him out for what he truly is and lays out his deep rooted fears and secrets bare, letting us as the outside party they’re unaware of know that what the two of them were here wasn’t some ordinary friendship or half cocked deal out of desperation, but a real and honest bond between two beings terrified, alone, and looking for safety and someone to confide in. They’re each others secret keepers. Long time confidants. Their most trusted. The reason both of them ran to begin with, in a plan that would involve them wrapping themselves so tightly around the other they’d become one in all ways but physical, and promise to keep each other and that secret until death do them part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is bloody, and messy, and Loki has no real way of winning this fight because he cannot hurt Gabriel in any way that matters because he’s an archangel and whether he takes damage or not he will live because of the way he was made, only one of them is killable here and only one of them has any intention of killing the other and it’s not Loki. It’s never been Loki. Ever faithful Loki.
They made a vow, and maybe it was childish and unrealistic but that’s what the two of them are by nature are they not? Fickle, childish, and endlessly devoted. To their families, to their lovers, to their fathers, to each other.
Loki should run at this point, if he has any intention of wanting to live. He’s not stupid, he knows Gabriel better than anyone else in the world and Gabriel acknowledges this by how hurt he is emotionally by the way Loki talks about him and the secrets they’ve passed over the thousands of years they’ve known one another. He’s smart enough to know sentiment won’t save him here, it didn’t save his sons, Sleipnir tried that already and it failed spectacularly. Gabriel is here to kill him, and when you take into consideration the wild power imbalance here in this battle what Loki is doing is essentially laying his head down on the chopping block for Gabriel. He’s a smart creature to survive this long, he could be gone if he really wanted to be just like the many times we watched Gabriel disappear.
He doesn’t.
To me, the crux of their story here is abandonment. You left me. Gabriel made the choice to break his vows, and chase after a family he left behind and even though YES it was for a noble reason that is still nothing when it was a personal stab in the back to Loki who also left his family behind to run away with Gabriel and didn’t go for Odin even though the call was put out to Loki to join the gods for the evening.
Loki didn’t go for his family, but Gabriel did.
Loki didn’t go to save his father in an event they were both invited to, Loki had the opportunity to go and save Odin and he chose his bond to Gabriel over saving him. Gabriel discarded his vow and went anyway, and Odin died.
Gabriel betrays Loki, and it’s not that Odin died, it’s that Loki was willing to sacrifice the opportunity to save him and Gabriel couldn’t say the same for his own family. Odin died for nothing, when Loki could’ve been there the whole time to come get him, and he was robbed of that opportunity while Gabriel went behind his back to do exactly that for his family.
Loki was faithful to his own detriment, and Gabriel was not.
Gabriel is punished fairly in Loki’s eyes because this isn’t just about some deadbeat dad (who chained Loki in a cave to torture him). This is a slight of a much more intimate nature. This was a betrayal of the worst kind.
Gabriel is unfaithful.
Everyone knows that Asmodeus is the demon Prince of lust, but in a little more detail that’s not entirely what makes him up. The cardinal sins are the worst because they are what you inflict upon others, an upon your very soul. Lust is something inherent to the condition of just being alive, but the sin is in the act of hurting others and yourself, so the vast majority of what Asmodeus is imagined ruling over is the adulterer, he is most often the one depicted punishing the unfaithful. Loki wasn’t just looking for a way to hurt Gabriel for the sake of inflicting pain, the trickster is never like that. The trickster doesn’t strike just to maim. Loki is sending a very explicit message to Gabriel by giving him to Asmodeus of all people;
“You were unfaithful.”
— Okay, maybe it’s wrong to say that Loki had every right to do what he did because it was definitely still A LOT to do to someone, but it’s far more understandable when the emotional weight of Gabriel’s crime is made clearer. You probably shouldn’t torture anyone ever for any reason— I’m avidly anti-torture— but dick move Gabriel…
And look, yeah they both sleep around and invite porn stars and hookers to the hotel rooms and what not and I certainly will not hang my ‘Gabriel is a bad person here’ hat on the human morality of monogamy because I think it’s shallow and a disservice to the kind of bond the two of them actually have, but there’s an extra added pain in it that Gabriel also turns up for his ex girlfriend in this situation who is willing to betray him for basically a can of pop but not for Loki who will let Odin die to protect Gabriel.
Gabriel comes back, and he offers no apologies because he isn’t capable of learning his lesson, he is selfish by nature (Also the inherent message of the nature of Hell and torture being one that is wholly unnecessary and cruel, punishment never breeds change internal or societal, you can’t change and reform under immense duress it just further traumatises and keeps you locked in the cycle, the system of Hell shouldn’t exist period). Instead, Gabriel comes to kill Loki’s boys so he can watch them struggle and die first before Gabriel delivers the final blow to the man himself. Would you want to live after all of that either, entirely alone without your family or the one who loved and understood you the most- or so you thought?
And could Gabriel live with it either, knowing the punishment didn’t fit the crime but that Loki had a point (see script) and he wasn’t innocent either and it’s cost him everything because now he gets to look at what it was he saved and it’s a brother who seeks him out in the dark just to torment him about his abuse?
And the story ends circular here, devastating me personally even further by twisting the knife.
Gabriel ran away because his family was so horribly broken, and Loki took off with him to escape his torture. Together they made the plan to become one and Gabriel could use Loki’s face and name to hide among the pagans, and his archangel might to take all the hits being thrown Loki’s way and keep him hidden, because no one’s going to fuck with the god who has the freaky new upgrade and just escaped the slammer. Slowly over time what was Gabriel and what was Loki had melded into two very similar personalities, a little different based on their life experiences, but still so the same they were indistinguishable to everyone but each other.
The core difference between them is their life experiences.
Until Gabriel comes back, tail between his knees and asks Loki to please take him back and let him resume playing the ‘Loki’ character, and Loki says sure, and he binds him and and subjects him to torture at the hands of Gabriel’s very own snake in the cave. Mouth stitched shut. “Be me, then,” He says. “Be me in my entirety.”
And Gabriel comes back after this, bitter and angry and he picks up a weapon and he starts knocking Loki’s family down piece by piece, stalking them through the night no matter how far they run, to make sure Loki’s family is as broken as his own before he delivers the final blow to end his life.
Loki’s family as shattered as Gabriel’s, Gabriel as shattered as Loki himself. Fully one in death.
