RIP Martha Wayne. As a Jewish mother you would have loved having Clark as a son in law because he’s never more than two seconds away, is always willing to help out around the house, and has 0 excuses for not visiting.

So, I found out that, as of The Penguin #7 (from February 2024), Martha Wayne has been confirmed to celebrate Hanukkah.
Before, DC had accidentally made her Jewish through the Kanes, but didn’t seem to realize it. I personally figured that although she was technically Jewish, she didn’t actually have a particular connection to it. But yeah, apparently she celebrated at least one Jewish holiday. So…Martha Wayne was Jewish and she participated in the culture.
That means Bruce spent his early years in an interfaith family—even if Martha wasn’t religious, he was raised on two different religious practices. Which likely affects his views on religion, authority, and his family relations, and I find that really interesting.
I really want to explore this in a fic somehow, but I’m not quite sure what to write. But yeah.

In case you didn't know, most of the Wayne clan is Jewish.
Bruce and Tim go to synagogue, Dick comes home for the holidays (yes, all of them), and I get called home to light the menorah every Hanukkah.
Barbara, Steph, and Cass aren't Jewish but they do join us in celebration.
Alfred makes the best matzo ball soup, and no, I do not take criticism on that because it is a fact.
I don't know where Duke and Damian stand, but I assume Dami is agnostic at this point? I'll have that conversation with him later.
Anyway, this is just a long winded way of saying happy Passover!
To all my Jewish friends, I love you, and I wish you the best. Love and light, and all that. ✌🏻

Ohh Batman is so moral ohh he can’t be with cat woman long term bc shell never stop being a criminal- he doesn’t care. I don’t think Bruce Wayne gives a shit about laws or criminality outside of the scope of justice. He would happily marry Selina unchanged and would delight in her robbing museums (which robbed the people’s who’s artifacts they boast). He gets off on Selina trying to steal from him. She gets off on him trying to stop her. They don’t hold hands in public they just take turns pick pocketing each other. Theyre two extreme rule breakers living on the fringes of society clinging to normality with the tips of their fingers breaking the law is just foreplay

Bruce's response to Jason's death makes a lot more sense if the Waynes are Jewish.
In Jewish burial practices, the body is washed and dressed in a simple burial shroud. However, if you die of an injury that leaves blood on you or your clothes, neither of those things take place. Any part of a person, including their blood, is considered to be holy and deserving of a proper burial (that's the reason we don't do embalming or cremation, traditionally).
Jason was murdered, bloody and brutal. Jason absolutely had blood on himself and his clothes. So, under Jewish tradition, Jason Todd would have been buried in his Robin uniform. But the thing is, Robin didn't die. Jason did, and Jason isn't Jewish.
So you have this dilemma. Jason Todd can't be buried in Robin's uniform. He's a Wayne, and not a Jewish one. He has to be cleaned up and put neatly in a suit so no one will see the injuries and question whatever cover story they created. Bruce, as a Jew, can't throw away or clean Jason's uniform, but he also can't bury it with Jason's body with the respect his blood deserves. Fuck, he probably doesn't even know how Jason would want to be buried. Bruce prepares for a lot of things, but his child's death always felt like too much. Would he prefer cremation? A more Christian funeral? Something else?
Like yeah, he kept the uniform and didn't clean it. Under Jewish law it should have been buried with Jason, but Robin didn’t die, and Jason can’t be buried in Robin’s uniform. Blood is considered as holy as the person and deserving of equal respect, so I guess it should be given a place of honor? Like he’s still stupid, but he’s trying

Jewish Family dynamics and the Batfamily:
“Why the hell would you do that?” grabs your ass off the ground and takes you home
“What the fuck are you doing bleeding everywhere? I just washed that carpet!” bandages your wounds while complaining the entire time
“I told you not to try that jump!” gives you ibuprofen every four hours without asking
“You look stupid with all that shit on your face.” tenderly reassures you that your face will look exactly the same when you wake up at three in the morning terrified about the reconstructive plastic surgery
“Don’t do that again.” holds you when you cry

Some people might remember that Bruce is Jewish, but I don't think people realize to *what level* this whole family is Jewish.
Looking only at the *blood related family members*, Thomas was canonically the only one that was actually Christian (not counting au version of family members I'm talking only about the current main universe versions).
Thomas was Christian.
Martha? Jewish
Hence Bruce- also Jewish.
The grandparents? Also Jewish.
Bruce's uncle (Martha's brother) Jacob (Kate and Beth's dad) was Jewish as well.
Jacob's wife and Bruce's aunt Gabi was also Jewish.
Bruce's twin cousins Kate and Beth? Jewish.
Another cousin of Bruce that her dad was also from the same parents of Martha and Jacob (hence he was also Jewish), aka bette? Also biologically Jewish.
Damian? The son of Bruce (Jewish) and Talia (Muslim) is both of his parents child so he doesn't have a Christian bone in his body. He's the farthest from Christian there is.
Even Helena Wayne the daughter of Bruce is also biologically Jewish.
THIS WHOLE FAMILY EXCEPT THOMAS IS JEWISH.
Have a fun day digesting that.

'broken memory (of you and me and something)' by JustGail
Author: @evilwickedme
Jason sat down on the chair he’d taken before. He was strangely restless and excited, but he still forced himself to say, “We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“I already said I’m fine with Christmas,” Bruce said.
“No, Hanukkah,” Jason said. He wouldn’t have been able to explain his stubbornness on the issue even to himself, let alone to Bruce. But he knew this is what he wanted this year. “I want… You don’t have to. But it looks nice.”
Bruce takes a moment to collect himself before replying, “Okay. I’ll have Alfred dig out the hanukkiah, it should still be in the Manor somewhere. We’ll do just the first night.”
“But it’s eight nights!” Jason protested.
“We’ll do one night, and see where we go from there, okay?” Bruce got out of his chair abruptly and walked to the window, facing away from Jason. “I’ll see you at dinner, Jason.”

Happy Purim!
In honor of the comics accidentally making Bruce Wayne Jewish:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Bruce's Jewish heritage is particularly interesting to me because although he certainly must be aware of it, he's clearly disconnected from it almost entirely. And like...that's what happens, sometimes. Through generations passing, through the death of relatives, through shame or fear...and in Bruce's case it's a combination of the first two, maybe even all three. As sad as it is, this story feels real. So I had to give it a happy ending.
Anyway, this...took me so long to draw even though I let myself be super messy. I might post more of them actually celebrating Purim, with better art...but that's unlikely to happen until after Purim is long past, so I'm gonna post this now. I wish I could include more that references Dick's Romani culture, but there is very little on the Internet. A lot of it is from unreliable sources and the rest is very vague. There wasn't anything I found that I felt certain enough to include, since I didn't want to misrepresent anything. So, I apologize for that.
...I need to stop being sad. Happy Purim to those who celebrate it!

Today I'm thinking about the big Wayne Birthday Bashes, like. He probably does a nice intimate family thing at home on the day off, but the night before is probably always some big Brucie Wayne party, so everyone can lose their shit at midnight screaming happy birthday and fireworks go off and yada yada yada.
Like basically the same as the big Wayne New Year's galas but less formal and even more drunk.
But basically the reason I'm thinking about this is like. I'm getting the warm fuzzies imagining like. Bruce is at the party already tired but still playing the part, looking around for WHERE the FUCK have his sons gone he needs SOMEONE to socialize with for a bit who's not a completely vapid socialite or slimy politician for a bit, and he's already played his "a reasonable amount of time for Brucie to want to talk to Commissioner Gordon" card.
And Alfred's just like hmmmnn sorry can't help you don't know where they went. So he's LOOKIN' but can find them. Then the event emcee gets on stage and things quiet down as he steps up to the mic and clears his throat.
"And now, a special announcement from-" [squints at cue card] "-the 'Official First Ward of Wayne' and 'Best Ass in Gotham-"
"More like the biggest ass!" Babs hollers with scornful humor from the sidelines somewhere amidst the giggles of tipsy partygoers. A few folks holler and whistle while others jokingly call for a recount.
"This is Nightwing slander and you know it!"
Bruce couldn't say for sure, but he's pretty certain that was Dick's own voice. He scans the crowd again, but to no avail.
He is beginning to regret having started the boys in those bright colors.
"-settle down, settle down! Ahem - today marks a most important occasion. Not just the birthday of our beloved Brucie-" Bruce plays to crowd, winking and waving as they clap and whistle for him now, making sure to keep every trace of his growing suspicion and concern from showing through. "-but also the FIRST of said birthdays in which our dear baby brother has FINALLY reached five full feet of height. As such, we are thrilled to announce a very special inaugural presentation - the very first traditional Wayne Family Father/Sons dance! If you would please, clear the ballroom floor. This... could get messy."
The crowd drifts to the sides of the room with scattered applause, a bit unsure but going with the flow. Bruce frowns, still seeing no trace of his boys, and whispers hurridly to Alfred from the corner of his mouth.
"I've... heard of father/daughter dances, but never father/s- wait, sons as in plural?"
Alfred shoots him a wry grin, but before there's even a chance for a response their are two broad hands smacking firmly into Bruce's chest and yanking him back - Dick and Jason, having used his confusion to successfully sneak up behind him, tugging him into a sturdy wooden chair. He's not even finished coughing from the impact before the world is tilting beneath him. Reflexively, he grabs onto the side edges of the seat as it lifts.
Dick, Jason, Tim... each of them grab a leg off the chair and hoist it up. With Bruce's weight, it pitches forward towards the left corner for just a moment as Damian slips into place - still a touch too short for cradling the remaining leg against his shoulders like the other boys, but his Robin training means even his extended grip is sturdy enough for their purposes.
"Alright, HIT IT boys!" Tim calls out, the group spurring into motion before Bruce can collect himself and demand to be put down. Various members of the waitstaff Alfred hired are suddenly ditching their serving trays for instruments. First, a slow, circling melody from a single Klezmer... then another joins... two more... it picks up speed... a fiddle... faster... the audience begins to clap in time, and before he can really even register what's happening Bruce is being and spun and dipped and almost thrown across the floor by his sons.
There's... a brief flash of memory. Foggy, the way things are when you're just a bit too young to fully recall. Some kind of family party... his mother's cousin. Uncle? Someone. everyone out on the dance floor... tiny Bruce, absolutely fascinated by what they were doing. His mother, exhausted after the event but still listening to him babble on about what he thought was so cool... still picking him up with a smile and throwing him around just the laughing man in the chair...
And now, it's his birthday. And he's the one laughing in the chair. And it's his family. His boys. Lifting him up. Spinning him around. He fills his heart swell almost to burst. Has to fight a sentimental tear from his eye.
Until, at least, he hears Jason holler "ALRIGHT! As agreed! First one to unseat him takes the whole kit and kaboodle!!!"
Oh ho ho. Alright then, boys. It's on.
