Do I have a chance?
Pairing: Portgas D. Ace x [gender neutral] Reader Words: ~ 1 600 Summary: Ace is just trying to get you to like him. Tags: he's so. ace. / Marco just sits back and eats popcorn while watching it happen
Requested by anon [Hi! Could I request male reader X Ace where Ace is nice and adorable with everyone except reader? Ace is not toxic or mean to Reader, he just acts more serious and tough around him (...)]
MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Your eyes observed Ace in the distance as he talked with the others. He would often giggle, showing that wide smile that made your heart flutter as he opened that wide smile. Sometimes he would joke about something, playing offended and being way too dramatic, and it was also way too cute when he randomly fell asleep. Only you knew how hard it was not to just reach out and ruffle his hair, play with his messy black strands, maybe squish his cheeks together, and kiss all over his freckles…
All of it was to be appreciated just by far, though. Marco and the others were so lucky.
“Ah, hey, (y/n),” Ace mumbled with a light wave as he approached when you sat at one of the tables on Moby Dick’s with a book in hand. “I was wondering, could you help me with some bandages? It’s kinda tricky to clean the wounds.” He pointed to the bandage on his shoulder. He didn’t smile. Okay. It was so awkward when Ace did that. It felt like he was annoyed by you.
“Sure.” You grabbed the marker and slipped it into the book before closing it. His eyes glanced down at it.
“What book is that?” Ace blinked as he observed you set it aside.
You raised an eyebrow, looking at it for a moment, and hummed. “Ah, it’s just something I grabbed from Marco.” You took the book while standing up, observing the cover for a moment. Ace always asked you about the stuff you read or watched, so you just told him about it before he asked. “It’s about a king who searches for the fragments of his dead wife’s soul. He’s the main character, along with a guy and a girl. This other guy is so cool. He’s stoic, y’know, all serious and tough. Very cool character. The king is way too dramatic.”
Despite your grin, Ace only raised an eyebrow in brief interest and nodded with a hum. “Oh, great. Sounds cool.”
Why did he always make things awkward?
You nodded with a hum. “Either way, I’m going to put it away. Where do you want to change your bandages—”
“Your cabin?” Ace said almost instantly. You blinked a couple of times before slowly nodding, and he exhaled softly. “Then let’s go.”
Ace was terribly quiet during all of that. He was serious, not reacting so much to your jokes and barely keeping the subjects going, so you just opted for silence. If he really disliked you, you didn’t want to keep bothering him. Even so; if he disliked you, why did he insist on always trying to be around you? You’d questioned Marco about that a couple of times, but all he did was scoff and chuckle in response.
You did favors to Ace once in a while, yeah—you two were close crewmates at the beginning—, and that was never the issue, just that he didn’t even thank you this time. Ace just walked out of the cabin before you could finish speaking, leaving his button-up on your bed.
Ace had sort of told Marco his plans. Marco didn’t agree at all, but he also knew he wouldn’t be able to convince someone with a thick head like Ace, so he didn’t even try too much. Honestly, Marco couldn’t even wonder how you were feeling with all this mess because he would often catch you gazing at Ace with those dreamy eyes.
One of the things that went through Marco’s head was certainly about the amount of functioning brain cells inside Ace’s head. If Ace was too shy to confess to you, maybe he should try some tactic that didn’t involve making you fall for him and confessing to him instead. Or just anything that involved Ace being Ace instead of someone who clearly didn’t please you.
As far as Marco could remember, it started when Ace wanted to find things to talk about with you, and the fact you were around reading a few books made it easy for Ace to figure out two things to chat about: what kind of stuff you liked, and also what your type was, hopefully. Marco could remember Ace ranting to him about how you loved all the serious and Stoic characters from those books, admiring their coolness. It was a matter of time until Ace was changing into that said demeanor whenever around you, but his attempts at being serious honestly just made Marco want to hide due to the second-hand shame. Ace was so stupid. He was like a weird kid.
On the other hand, Marco also wanted to strangle Ace to make him confess to you already. He noticed that most of the crew was dispersed now that you stopped by an island. You were sitting alone at one of the tables on the main deck, reading your book.
“Oi, Ace-yoi,” Marco caught Ace’s attention. “I’m going ahead to the shop, so can you tell (y/n) I’ll already be there?” He didn’t actually wait for Ace to answer before he left, waving back at Ace with his other hand stuck in his pocket.
Damn, Marco. He could’ve at least told Ace something about that before. At the moment, he wasn’t fucking prepared to talk with you. Ace’s mind was racing as he looked back and saw you there, nose buried in that same book from the other day. You were the only one there aside from an occasional pirate that would walk by, which wasn’t even relevant. Marco really hated him, didn’t he?
Ace cleaned his throat and tried to seem cool as he walked over to the area where you were, hands in his pockets. He could do it. He was going to do it so well that maybe you’d confess to him today. The same things went over and over in his mind as he leaned back against the wall, letting his hat cover his face lightly. You probably were sleeping hugging the shirt that he left in your room. He probably looked so cool. He was so cool.
… Well, why didn’t you approach him, then? What was taking you so long?
You had noticed Ace’s presence there, of course—how could you not? It wasn’t even the first time he saw you after the day you fixed his bandages, but you still wished that Ace would finally come to thank you or ask for his shirt back. Despite having your eyes glued to the page, you weren’t reading a thing. You couldn’t read a thing.
This was already getting on your nerves. Did Ace think he was better than anyone? Did Ace hate you?
Ace jumped when the book was suddenly tossed at him. He gasped as he caught it before it fell to the ground, holding it tightly in his hands.
“What’s wrong with you?” You stood there, pointing at Ace accusingly. He had wide eyes, mouth opening and closing as he tried to say something, but it never came. You groaned, clenching your hands into fists and stepping towards him. “I get it that you don’t like me, but I don’t see the reason you keep hanging around! If I annoy you so much, then just avoid me, and I’ll return the favor!” You sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose as you took a moment; the dumbass just stood there tensely, face red. “Look, you could’ve at least acknowledged that I cleaned your wounds and taken your shirt back!”
Ace finally managed to choke something out. “But I don’t hate you!” His voice sounded weaker than he planned. Shit, he was making a fool of himself in front of you again. He groaned, looking at the book and slipping it in his pocket, not knowing what to do with it.
“You don’t have to lie, Ace!”
“I’m not lying!” Ace groaned as he pulled his hat over his face to hide it. “Ahh, I fucked it all up… I’m so sorry, (y/n)!”
A sigh escaped your lips. “Ace, it’s okay, really. You’re not obligated to like me or anything.”
Ace lowered his hat enough to look at you over the brim of it. He stuttered a couple of times but decided to take a pause—he took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment. “Look, I’m so sorry. I actually like you a lot.”
You furrowed your eyebrows, eyeing Ace up and down. “What do you even mean by that? Like me? Ace—”
“I was trying to be like those characters you talk about! From the books, I mean.” Ace sighed in frustration. He adjusted his hat, letting it hang over his back. “I thought you’d like me more if I did it.”
“Ace…” You sighed, burying your face in your hands and then rubbing your temples. Now all the hints that Marco dropped were starting to make sense. “Okay. Terrible choice, actually, because I like it when you’re being yourself.” Ace furrowed his eyebrows, so you nodded more. “I’m always hoping you’ll be silly and playful when you’re around me because it’s so cute.” Your cheeks reddened as you confessed it, but there was no other way to fix things without talking it out, even more after a misunderstanding going on for so long. “Just be yourself, Ace. I actually like you a lot, as well.”
Ace was pouting a little, his cheeks all red. “Can I hug you, (y/n)? Pretty please?”
A chuckle escaped your lips as you felt your face heating up as well. “Yeah, yeah, I—”
He was in your arms before you could finish saying it, hugging you tightly. “I’m sorry, okay? I won’t do it again.”
“Yeah, you better.” You patted his back lightly with a sigh.
“You know,” Ace chuckled a little bit as he pulled back; his cheeks were redder as he looked away. “Do I, y’know, do I have a chance with you now that I’m being the way you like me?”
You raised an eyebrow and slowly grinned wide. “Hmm, I’ll think about it,” you teased a little, kissing his cheek.

🎶You’re the one that I want…
Across the large hall, amid evening gowns and tuxedos, he stood. Those intense blue eyes could not be mistaken by anyone other than himself, and even after two years they still held the same amount of power over her as they once did.
He always had the worst timing. Every time, without fail, he decided to reappear from the ashes like a Fenix after she somehow managed to get a hold of her life once again. A part of her thinks he does this on purpose, he has a silent pleasure in watching her suffer whenever he decides to show up in her life again. Whenever he decides to reclaim her body, her heart pays the price, but not this time.
She crossed the hall towards the dark corner of the room, confident steps guided her to him once more, to what she hoped to be the last time.
“Who let you come in? I don’t recall sending you an invitation” She stated. Her posture was impeccable, back and knees straightened, shoulders back, head never once looking down, hands confidently and delicately placed on top of each other in front of her stomach.
School me to what makes you shake shake it off…
She certainly changed, and that was the first thing Mox noticed when he instantly found her being the center of attention in a crowd of rich people. The confidence that once lacked in her was now abundant enough to be categorized as arrogance, and even from afar, Mox could tell that she had learned how to be one of them. She was incredibly smart and had a certain ease to adapt to the environment she was in, it was one of the qualities he most admired in her. She knew people from different social statuses, attended diverse gatherings and knew how to properly behave in all of them. But that wasn’t what surprised him the most, what did catch him off guard though was the wedding announcement in the gossip column of The New York Times.
“The public announcement was enough of an invitation for me. I didn’t know I would need a formal card asking me to come, although I have a feeling you wouldn’t want someone like me attending your high society party”
“Follow me” She demanded quickly, before turning around and taking the stairs up to the terrace.
Mox cackled as he followed her, his eyes roamed through her figure, drowning in the sight of the only woman who was able to keep him in check. The fancy clothes added to her natural royalty appeal, and that was the first thing that drew his attention to her in that indie wrestling show over 10 years ago: her royal aura. She was the princess that his bad boy self couldn’t wait to get a hold of, the proof that he could achieve something solid, good, and worthy in life even though he barely had money to keep himself alive.
Her heels stopped clicking once they reached the terrace, “Well” She turned around to face him, “What is it that you want this time, Jonathan?”
Though I'm degenerate he's the fool who's going to bore you to death…
“Jonathan?” Mox chuckled “Are nicknames not allowed in your world anymore, kitty? Are they too poor for your upper-class vocabulary?” He continued to stare at her and kept drowning in her beauty. She was still drop-dead gorgeous, only now her doll-like beauty had been covered by heavy amounts of makeup to make her lose her innocent appearance and gain more of a womanly look.
“Nicknames are reserved for friends” She shrugged lightly
“Am I not your friend?”
“You’re an acquaintance, Jonathan. Nothing more, nothing less. Just an acquaintance”
“Hmmm,” Mox hummed, his heavy boots now stomping on the hardwood floor as he took three more steps toward her until he was close enough to feel the warmth radiating from her skin.
“I don’t think acquaintances would do half the things we did, kitty cat”
“That’s in the past now, Jonathan. Things have changed”
“Did they though? Because I’m pretty sure I still have the same effect on you as you do on me” Mox’s fingers traced her exposed collarbone, and the electricity of his touch on her skin continued to be as alive as it ever was. The sparkle was still present, the desire, the attraction, the primal need, and the urge to get intoxicated in each other until nothing else existed survived the years and was as strong as ever.
“You’re wrong” She lied effortlessly as she did so many times before in front of the mirror whenever he abandoned her.
“Am I?” Mox wrapped his fingers at the base of her neck, subtly pulling her closer to his lips. “So you won’t mind if I put your statement to the test?”
He's super rich and privileged
Sleepwalking for so many years
He looks good stock, he seems well bred
Sleepwalking for so many years…
“I don’t have to prove you shit!” She hissed, fists balling beside her in an attempt to keep her anger under control.
A sly smirk plastered on Moxley’s lips upon hearing her small curse. “So there’s still some realness in you even after you sat on the money throne, huh? I knew you wouldn’t let me down”.
“What the hell do you want, Jonathan?”
“You’re not going to do that, are you?” Mox’s lips brushed against hers, his rough voice was low, almost a whisper as his warm peppermint breath caressed her skin. “You’re not going to destroy your life like that, I won’t let you do it”.
“Of course, because only you are allowed to destroy my heart and make my life miserable, no?”
“He’s the one who’ll make you miserable, kitten. I’ve seen his pictures, he doesn’t have what it takes to be with you”
“Says the lying asshole who never kept his promises and abandoned me whenever he had the chance”
“I’ve never done any of that and you know it” Moxley’s fingers teased the pulse point of her neck, he drew small circles on the sensitive flesh until they eventually traveled to her nape. “I never lied to you”.
“You said you loved me”
“I did” Mox tilted her neck back until her eyes could stare up at him.
You're the one that I need…
He laid a tempting peck on her lips before whispering “And I still do”. The intense baby blue eyes stared into her soul, and she could feel herself getting overwhelmed by his presence. Whenever she was with him, Moxley turned her into a shy young girl again, the one who was more than prepared to discover the world with the blonde bad boy.
“I kept all of my promises, even when I didn’t want to. I promised to stay away and I did, I promised to never get in touch with you again, and I kept my word. You didn’t want me anywhere near you again, so I did what you asked me to, even though my instincts told me not to”
“I thought you were going to come after me, Jonathan. But you left!”
“You told me to-“
“I was 21 for fuck’s sake! Do you think I meant any of the shit I said to you? I was just a dumb kid trying to get her boyfriend’s attention! I wanted you to come after me at least once, Jon. For the first time in our relationship, I wanted to feel like you cared enough to ask me to stay, I wanted you to fight for us-” She felt her words being swallowed by Mox’s lips.
His hands cupped her cheeks, fingers traced the hairline in her nape before pulling the metal side comb away from her hair. Moxley’s hands buried into the cascade of locks, reveling in the feeling of having her soft mane in his palms once again.
I'm a degenerate but no fool who's going to bore you to death…
“You always talked too much” He whispered in a teasing tone against her wet lips once they broke the kiss.
“You can’t do this, Jon” Her tongue darted out to taste the remaining flavor of his gum on her lips, “You can’t just show up whenever you feel like it and expect me to drop everything-“
“Come with me, kitty cat” His arms closed around her waist, pulling her closer to his body enough for her to feel his erection pressing against her stomach. “I want you to come with me, you know you want to come with me. You don’t belong here”.
“Jon, please. I can’t do this”
Mox intertwined their fingers and began to pull her towards the fire exit, “Come with me, kitten. I promise you won’t regret it”, was the last thing he whispered before the darkness of the stairs engulfed his figure.

good night imma go to sleep with the thought that Ethan’s death in the main game was him all alone in fear and in pain and without any proper goodbyes and broken by the thought he’d never watch his daughter grow up, the daughter for whose safety he was dying in the first place
and his “death” in Shadows of Rose was him being held in Rose’s arms, not only seeing Rose grown up but also seeing how she grew from uncertainty and hate for herself into confidence and self-love, being able to express his love and pride for her, hearing Rose tell him she loves him, staying by his side and holding him close, and even though he was still in pain he was not alone. He could smile, and be happy, and be proud. He could be at peace.

Turning Red really fucking blew my mind like I'm starting to come up with an entire essay about why asexual representation has to come hand-in-hand with sexual liberation and the disappearance of shameful horniness
Like we cannot confidently say that people will see ace representation and immediately understand they're ace if they haven't been exposed to what NOT being ace is, if we do not make it clear that hi, people are having sex irl because it feels good and because their minds are really begging them to do it not because they feel they "have" to
Like as an asexual I can GUARANTEE you that a lot of us do not understand how much and how POWERFULLY allos vibe with sex in media, because we're taking it as yet another extreme and stereotype Hollywood throws at us. And because The Church still has so much power, that sex depiction is limited and only used for "specific purposes" as if making people horny isn't a legitimate purpose.
And good ace representation cannot exist with that limit set. If clueless ace people don't know what it is they don't feel, they will not understand that the ace representation is there for them, that it's meant to help them understand and explore their own sexuality (or lack thereof). Sex exists in media, but it exists WRONG when it comes to people understanding and exploring their sexuality. It's there for show and shock and "it's not for children" when it should be there for "It's a thing humans do, it's a thing humans like, it's a thing 99% of the population will relate to".
And if that is set right, the 1% that will not relate to it, they will see asexual representation and (probably) immediately be like "Oh that's why I don't get any of it lol." Because they will KNOW what it is they DON'T feel. And I cannot stress how much, as an asexual, understanding you DON'T feel something so common it's barely even discussed because everyone takes it for granted, is one of the hardest things to do.

There's an especially funny part about Twilight freaking out over Anya's apparent stress from "being dragged out of an orphanage by a stranger"... when Anya was the one who gaslit gatekept girlbossed her way into being adopted by him.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how even silly short missions manage to have their share of wholesomeness and family connection. It's like family is important in a series called Spy x Family or something.
Anyway, Anya is a kid that gets very attached to certain things - and despite being bold enough to use the knowledge she has due to her telepathy in order to make Loid do what she wants, she's not exactly a spoiled kid. She still sticks to Mr. Chimera, the only toy she had while she was in the orphanage. She doesn't ask for new clothes, or toys, or gadgets, what she asks for is experiences (the castle rescue, adopting Bond in specific after she was emotionally invested in him)... and peanuts, too.
So to her, the penguin plush is not just one toy from her plethora of toys that got ruined. It's a toy that her dad got for her. It's a souvenir of their aquarium adventure, where she helped him locate the penguin he needed to find and even arrest the criminal who wanted to get the secret information about the weapon. It's a reminder of how she took part and helped him in his mission. Just a replacement stuffed penguin won't do. It's not the toy itself, it's the memories connected to it. I mean, of course she's sad a toy of her got destroyed - by the dog she asked to have, no less - but it hurts even more knowing what this toy means to her.

Favourite Tarlos Scenes!!
Tagged by @guardian-angle22 and @whenshereads thank youuuu
5. “I love how big your heart is for bringing in strays.”
Tumblr media
This whole episode could go on here to be honest. I love when this show just embraces how insane it is and goes full comedy and Rafa and Ronen both could easily star in a sitcom. This episode is such a nice light view of their often heavy relationship and it shows how much they love and support each other without either of them being in pain, which is a really nice change. Plus, I love TK loving animals and relate to it a lot because I would also bring home a lizard like that. And also Vegan!TK is canon to me okay.
4. “Lou 2, or Louis the Second”
Tumblr media
Can you tell I love lizards??? This scene is just all kinds of lovely and adorable. Never mind the most adorable and gorgeous bearded dragon I have ever scene, the way they support each other and put the other’s needs first here is just *mwah*. I love watching their conflict resolution skills in seasons 3 and 4 because we really see how fucking healthy their relationship is in a way that I don’t think we often see on TV, especially soap operas. Of course this episode drove home that Carlos is not Mentally Healthy lol so he should really go to therapy cos Gabriel (rip tho I notoriously never liked him) fucked him up soooooo bad. Also shoutout to Jewish TK in this episode cos that made me deeply happy. Second shoutout to the entire Riddle of the Sphinx episode which I’m not including only because my explanation for why I love it is pretty much the same as it was for this scene and there’s too many fucking amazing scenes to choose from.
3. “And we’re soulmates.”
Tumblr media
Gotta love a comfort scene. I mean. Just the way they love each other so hard in this scene and the way Carlos comforts TK with touch and the way TK wants to protect him but Carlos just can’t fathom a world where he wouldn’t spend whatever life they have together and the way they end the scene hugging instead of kissing??? (Cue Dear Baby from Waitress lmao) They just. They’re so ???? You know??????? Sorry I’ve run out of words. You get it though.
2. “Breathe.”
Tumblr media
There’s just so much relief and care in this scene. The number of times I’ve watched it just willing it to be LONGER. I love a reunion scene, I love a comfort scene and this aces both. There was so much great build up to this moment and so many emotions riding on it and it could have fallen flat but it didn’t. TK barely being able to open his eyes but still noticing that Carlos wasn’t okay and taking care of him the only way he could even though he literally just almost died??? Fucking inspired. This enveloping hug???? The love is fucking palpable. What a scene man. What a fucking scene. Wish it was longer.
1. “Tyler, can I say yes now?”
Tumblr media
What can I even say really?? It’s the perfect proposal scene. It’s so deeply romantic in its simplicity. It’s raw and honest and not some big public spectacle (which just makes me cringe) it’s just them sharing their love. The scene is emotional and funny and so VERY them. The acting is wonderful, the writing is wonderful, Carlos calling TK Tyler is a God-tier choice every time… I cannot tell you how many times I’ve watched this scene. And it still makes me cry. I want to be enveloped by this scene. I want it pumped into my veins. I want to LIVE in it. Absolute perfection.
Idk who to tag so just say I tagged you if you wanna do it!

Pushover. psh jwy
TW: exhibitionism, fingering, oral female receiving, dirty talk, praise, degradation, grinding, slight bondage, good ole fashion fucking, cock stepping apparently, daddy kink, mutual masturbation, probably other stuff that have escaped my mind cuz writing this felt like a fever dream. So wooyoung is involved pretty heavily involved in this, like many of the kinks listed are done on him and by him so there you have it. Also yeosang is directly involved for like 4 seconds, also please just assume any tags mentioned in the first part that are not listed here may also pop up.
Part 1 (this is a direct continuation of this timestamp)
WC: 5k words of pure smut.

You were hardly aware of your surroundings. Nestled into Seonghwa’s lap, your head fell back onto his shoulder and your eyes screwed shut. You could hear the garbled sound of your boyfriend’s voice rumbling next to your ear, but the slim fingers working in and out of your wet hole stopped any thoughts from entering your brain. Your panties had been pushed aside only enough for him to slip two fingers inside you but you were already keening.
Seonghwa knew how to work you, knew how to make you fall apart and he would usually take his time doing it. Normally you had to put in the work for this kind of treatment, you would have to be especially good and listen to him well during the day, a single misstep or disobeyed words would leave you hopeless, but you had gotten very good at behaving. Why would you when he treated you so well? Not to mention that Seonghwa had something to prove today, without an exchange of words you already knew to be on your best behavior today.
“So what do you say, Woo? It’s your call.” Seonghwa spoke with a cool calm tone. His free hand tapped your side and you knew he wanted your attention for the next part, so your head lifted up and you pulled your eyes open to face the room.
Seven pairs of eyes were glued to you and your boyfriend, all in various stages of embarrassment to downright turned on, but the ones that caught your attention were none other than Wooyoung’s. Because it seemed for the first time the man was at a complete loss for words. His mouth was flapping open and closed like a fish out of water but his complexion was suddenly very pink. He was watching with careful eyes the way Seonghwa’s fingers slipped in and out of you, each time pulling more wetness from you, where it pooled on Seonghwa’s pant leg and made his fingers glisten.
“Are you going to answer me? I don’t appreciate being ignored Wooyoung.” Seonghwa’s voice sounded again, this time with a much steelier tone. Snapped out of his reverie Wooyoung’s eyes flung up to your boyfriend's hard gaze and he made a confused noise. Wooyoung’s body twitched at Seonghwa’s disappointed sigh and somewhere in the room, you heard Mingi muttering to Jongho.
“I asked you a question Woo, do you have an answer?”
Wooyoung’s eyes flitted around the room, desperately looking for aid in the faces of his friends, but none came. They seemed perfectly content to watch the loud boy struggle for words. Eventually, he looked to you for help with pleading eyes, you weren’t quite sure what he wanted you to do but before you could even ponder Seonghwa slipped another finger inside you, stretching you open, even more, making your lips fall open with a pleased sigh and your brain clouded over again.
“Don’t look to her for help, she listened well and is getting her reward. You can’t possibly expect her to risk that to help you. Now, I don’t like repeating myself Woo, so I’m only going to do it once. Do you still think I’m too much of a pushover?” Seonghwa spoke with icy venom.
Wooyoung frantically shook his head ‘no.’ You almost felt sorry for the man when your boyfriend's face turned to stone. Wooyoung noticed it too, and in a moment of frantic panic he realized his mistake and pushed out the word “No!” With perhaps a little too much force. Your head turned to look at Seonghwa’s sharp side profile. He looked very pleased with himself. Rightfully so, taking charge was his forte in times like these.
Seonghwa returned your gaze with a smirk. Using his free hand he gently took your chin between his fingers and pulled you in for a deep kiss. The hand working inside you slowed it is ministrations, but you knew better than to voice your disapproval. Seonghwa’s lips effortlessly urged yours to open and his long tongue slipped between them. Seonghwa’s kisses were always so, strong? He put so much force into every press of the lips and every swipe of the tongue head spun with excitement. Your eyes feel shut almost immediately, moving your mouth gently along with your boyfriend.
It seems you got a little too lost in the feeling of the kiss and the gentle push of the hand working inside you because you were slowly becoming more and more vocal with each passing second. What started as soft groans were now developing into full moans that were only slightly muffled by Seonghwa’s lips. But a sudden squeal from across the room drew both of your attention. Seonghwa broke the kiss to peer across the room at none other than Wooyoung, whose pink complexion had turned bright red since you last looked at him. Also notable, was the way he kept clenching his thighs together and making small grinding motions.
He wasn’t completely alone in this, one quick glass around the room showed you that all of your friends seemed to be enjoying the scene before them, many of them sporting hard dicks of their own (San and Hongjoong especially had taken to slowly palming themselves over their jeans) but none seemed to be quite as affected as the boy directly across for you.
“Getting impatient?” Seonghwa asked with disinterest.
“No,” Wooyoung replied, trying to match your boyfriend's tone but failing miserably.
“We’ve barely started and you're already rutting against the floor like a dog, are you sure this isn’t too much for you?” Seonghwa asked in a tone of mock concern. Seonghwa pulled his fingers from you to instead gently circle your clit with care. You. Squirmed again. The truth was you were remarkably close to the cumming. A fact Seonghwa probably knew. You tried to reassure yourself, knowing that in the current circumstances a high reward was coming your way soon, but the sudden emptiness was disappointing none the less and while it showed on your face you dared not make a sound.
“Get on with it then,”
You winced. Knowing the kind of reaction Wooyoung’s words would bring. Seonghwa’s face hardened. Much darker than you had seen in a long time. One quick glance to the side told you that the younger boy's word had left Seonghwa seething. He stayed silent for a moment, but not inactive. His fingers dancing across your folds seemed to gain a sense of purpose, and with sudden and unexpected vigor, Seonghwa worked them in a way that made your legs twitch and your hole clench around nothing.
“Can I, please?” You asked aloud, though it was clear who you were talking to.
“Go ahead little one,” Seonghwa encouraged with a surprisingly gentle tone.
A loud whine came from your open mouth and the room watched with rapt attention as your body came undone. Even Seonghwa pulled eyes dangerous gaze away from Wooyoung who had been gulping with fear, to watch with soft eyes at the way his pretty girl fell apart for him.
It must have been a truly lewd sight. Your body spasming freely as your glistening core twitched, not to mention your chest covered with marks given to you by the very man who caused your pleasure. The helpless cries were only the cherry on top to the room of onlookers, Yunho had even let out a low groan of his own. But the man of the hour, as it seemed, Wooyoung had returned to his stunned silence, watching the way Seonghwa continued to toy with your clit, prolonging your orgasm as much as possible for the room to enjoy.
Seonghwa turned back to Wooyoung and stopped his work on you only after the majority of your orgasm had passed, leaving you breathless and panting. You felt Seonghwa’s hard cock digging into your ass, but Seonghwa had other matters to attend to first. He fixed Wooyoung with a hard gaze and gave a simple command.
“Come here,”
Wooyoung froze at his words, unable to look away. Yeosang, who had been enjoying Wooyoung’s torment far more than the others urged his forward with a small push on the shoulder, which snapped him out of his trance, and after a moment he slowly crawled across the floor to sit on the floor before you.
Everyone in the room seemed shocked by this turn of events, yourself included, but one quick look from Seonghwa’s encouraging smile settled your nerves. Besides, your brain way still basking in the aftermath of your orgasm so this all seemed much more exciting than you would admit out loud.
With a pinch on your outer thigh from Seonghwa your legs instinctively opened wider, giving Wooyoung an eye full of your now slightly swollen core. Seonghwa reached between your legs and spread your pussy open, exposing your still pulsing hole to the man on the floor, and with one simple sentence, changed the tone of the night for good.
“Get on with it then,”
“What?” Wooyoung sputtered helplessly, looking up to your boyfriend with wide eyes.
“Your attitude has done nothing but remind me how wonderfully obedient my pretty girl is,” as Seonghwa spoke you subconsciously cuddled further into his chest, his eyes flicked to you and he gave you a reassuring squeeze on your neck with his free hand, “and I think she should be rewarded before I deal with that mouth of yours.”
Wooyoung’s eyes shown with realization as it finally dawned on him exactly what his teasing had gotten him into. His eyes flicked around to the faces of his friends only to see them waiting expectantly for Wooyoung to do as he was told. He looked back to Seonghwa and opened his mouth, to apologize, to beg, to l say anything at all, but no words came out. Seonghwa frowned at him.
“Don’t you think she’s been good?” Your boyfriend asked accusatorily.
“Yes, she has-“ Wooyoung started.
Seonghwa’s finger slipped down to drag through your folds and collect the wetness gathering there. You were still incredibly sensitive from your orgasm and the movement made you shudder a gasp. Wooyoung’s eyes followed the action with a downright hungry gaze but something was still restraining him from acting. Seonghwa held out his wet finger in front of the boy's face, and Wooyoung couldn’t help but lick his lips at the sight.
“I’m not going to say it again. Get. On. With. It.”
It seemed whatever defiant streak had been holding the boy back had finally broken. Wooyoung’s head snapped forward and took the Seonghwa’s long shining finger into his mouth and sucked it clean. A loud whinny groan came from the boy instantaneously and after a moment his lips pulled away with a loud pop. With his new resolve Wooyoung’s eyes zeroed in on your face blushing face and with an incredibly what look his eyes snapped back down and he dove in.
An unapologetic scream ripped from your open mouth. The first sensation you felt was pain, you have only fully come down from your high a minute or so prior and your clit was still incredibly sensitive as Wooyoung attached his lips to your cunt and rolled his tongue over the bud repeatedly. But the longer he kept at it, sliding his tongue over the length of your core in a wide lick, the more the full pain turned into biting pleasure.
“You look so pretty like this baby,” Seonghwa muttered encouragingly in your ear, but still loud enough for the room to hear over the obscene slurping noises Wooyoung was now making as he sucked at your entrance. “Doesn't that feel nice?”
Depends on how you define nice really, it felt like all too much all at once, it hurt yes, but every swipe of the younger boy's tongue brought more wetness out of you and made your body twitch and writhe with the slightest movement. Honestly, you should have been used to this by now. Seonghwa loved to do this to you, overstimulate you for hours till there were tears in your eyes and you had lost control of your limbs, he thought you looked best when completely at his mercy. But this was only your first orgasm, you had been trained well enough to keep some of your composure despite the abuse your aching core was suffering at Wooyoung’s hand. You turned to Seonghwa’s satisfied face, and gave him a weak smile,
“Feels good, Daddy.”
Somewhere in the room someone let out an “oh fuck,” and Wooyoung groaned particularly loud directly into your pussy and the vibrations traveled up your spine like lightning. Your mouth fell open as you looked into Seonghwa’s eyes with a dazed look. Your hips arched off your boyfriend's lap. It was Wooyoung who made the first move to push your hips back, eager to have his mouth back on you, but he had no sooner touched you than Seonghwa slapped his hand away from your body.
Wooyoung pulled away from your core, his chin dripping with your juices and his eyes shining with confusion. Seonghwa took your hips into both of his hands and pulled you back, flush against his lap and still hard cock, he then fixed Wooyoung with a glare.
“Your not here to touch. Make my baby girl cum in the next five minutes and I might just go easier on you.” Seonghwa spat.
Wooyoung blinked at him, before giving him the sweetest smile he could muster.
“Yes, Daddy”
This took you and the rest of the room by surprise. But you didn’t have time to ponder before Seonghwa took the boy by the roots of his hair and pulled his face forward into your swollen cunt.
“Times ticking, little boy, better get a move on.”
And so he did. Wooyoung ate you out with a burning passion you had never quite experienced. Seonghwa preferred to take hours going down on you, purposely going a slow and steady as possible to build up extremely powerful orgasms that would last for minutes. This was entirely different. Wooyoung was being incredibly messy. Wet sounds echoed around the room and into your ears, he seemed to be trying to eat you alive with the way his mouth moved desperately around your folds. His tongue had made its return to your clit. He sucked the bud between his lips and rolled it around with his tongue in such quick tight little circles your brain spun and if it weren’t for the iron grip one of your boyfriend's hand still had on your hip your sure you would flailing around like a madwoman. You certainly sounded like one with the way endless cries, whines, and groan spilled from your lips in increasing volume. Wooyoung had a clear goal, Seonghwa had given him five minutes? He would do it in three.
You were nearing the end of your rope, your entire lower half seemed to be vibrating with numb pain and pleasure it was almost unbearable but somehow nowhere near enough.
“Daddy? Can I cum please?” You spoke in a shattered voice. Seonghwa, who still had his hand twisted in Wooyoung’s hair looked down expectantly at the boy, who was already peering up at your face with wide eyes. Both you and your boyfriend watched as Wooyoung slid his tongue into your hole and began fucking it in and out of you in time with your breathy gasps. Your head flipped frantically to search your boyfriend's eyes, begging for permission.
“Please, please, Daddy, I can’t hold-“
“You can cum baby,”
And that was all it took. You practically screamed. Your eyes went white as your head fell back again. Having lost all control of the movement of your limbs Seonghwa took his hand from Wooyoung’s head and used both to hold your spasming body close against his. Your brain had gone fuzzy and the only two things registering in your brain were the gentle praise being whispered into your ear and the beat of Seonghwa’s heart against your back from how closely he held you.
Your recovery to much longer this time. To be perfectly honest, in your whacked-out brain it could have been hours.
Slowly you came back to reality. When you opened your eyes the first thing you saw was Yunho from across the room, he gave you a reassuring smile but it was offset slightly by the way his hand was down his pants, nevertheless you smiled back. You laid limp and spent across Seonghwa’s lap. His arm had come around your waist to hold you up and his other hand was rubbing soft circles on your inner thigh. He gave a gentle kiss to your temple as you stirred, leaving butterflies in your stomach. Shifting slightly so you sat sideways on his lap you curled yourself into him with an affectionate purr.
And then there way Wooyoung. He sat on his knees with his hands on his thighs looking up at you like he won a prize.
“You taste good,” he said with an almost happy hour lucky smile.
“Did you like it, Woo?” San asked from behind him, San was sporting his own wide eyes and looking overly jealous about the whole thing.
Wooyoung spun around to look at his best friend and spoke enthusiastically,
“She tastes so good Sannie, really, it was so much fun!”
“Don’t get too excited Woo, we’re not done yet.” Seonghwa chided. Wooyoung whirled around to face him.
“Didn’t I do good?” He asked with a confused look.
You nodded absently as Seonghwa spoke.
“Yea you did good, but that doesn’t excuse your attitude earlier. You still need to learn some respect. I’m sure our friends would agree all this attention you’ve been getting has gone to your head.”
Yeosang and Jongho snickered in agreement. Wooyoung turned to shoot them a glare but it was cut short by a strangled moan. Seonghwa had pressed the heel of his shoe onto the swollen tip of Wooyoung’s cock through his jeans. And to your surprise, Wooyoung’s hips bucked up into the sole of his shoe. Your brain short-circuited.
Wooyoung started to move away but Seonghwa took hold of his hair again and kept him in place.
“What’s the matter woo? Embarrassed? Embarrassed you almost got yourself off on Daddy’s shoe?”
Wooyoung shook his head no, but Seonghwa only dug his heel in harder and Wooyoung couldn’t help but buck against his shoe again with a pained moan. Your legs were clenching together as another pool of arousal pooled between them. Here’s the deal, you had always admired Seonghwa’s incredible level-headedness. In fact, it was one of the best qualities you could ask for in a lover. But for months now, you had been hoping for the chance that Seonghwa would show his true colors to the rest of the group. The idea had been a fantasy of yours for such a long time, but seeing it, here and now, and like this? Not to mention you had always wondered just how far Seonghwa would go if someone disobeyed him, perhaps you didn’t have the guts to do it yourself, especially since being good reaped such high reward, but this was far more than you ever imagined. You doubt whether you had ever been this turned on in your life.
Seonghwa noticed your reaction, of course, he could always read you like a book. He glanced around the room to the hungry faces of your friends till he found who he was looking for and locked eyes with them with a smirk.
“Yeosang, think you could help me for a moment?”
Yeosang returned the smirk and the room watched with bated breath as he made his way over to the scene, eyes zeroed in on Wooyoung’s mortified face.
“Who knew Wooyoung was such a pain slut.”
Yeosang’s voice was as cool as a cucumber, and if it wasn’t for the bulge in his pants you would think he was talking about the weather. Seonghwa dug his heel into Woo one last time before spinning the boy around to face Yeosang by yanking the hair in his grip. Wooyoung was whining pathetically at it all. Your hand was placed on Seonghwa’s hard chest. He glanced at you with a promising smile at your desperate face.
“Not had your fill yet, little one?” He asked you with a smirk. You shook your head ‘no.’
“No Daddy, you make me so needy.” You reply with wide eyes and a slight whine, grasping the fabric of his shirt in a tight fist. He grinned at you before turning to Yeosang again.
“I think it’s finally time to fuck my baby girl, but I don’t think Wooyoung has learned his lesson yet,” as he spoke Seonghwa began fiddling with his belt, pulling through the loops of his jeans. Handing the belt to Yeosang he continued, “Do me a favor, tie him up, make him desperate, don’t stop till he begs.”
Yeosang accepted the challenge with a smile. Seonghwa’s attention was finally on you and you alone. With his help as your body was still weak, he adjusted you to straddle his hips facing him. You looked a mess surely, there was no way you looked anything but obscene and sweaty, But Seonghwa took in your face with a smile.
“You look so pretty like this baby girl” As he spoke, Seonghwa’s hand came to your ass and kneaded it in his palms. The room could no longer see your face, but they could most definitely see this, and likely your still leaking cunt.
Directly behind you, you could hear rummaging noises and the distinct clink of a belt being done up. A quick glance over your shoulder showed you that Wooyoung was now facing the room, with his hands bound behind his back and a pillow between his legs, Yeosang sat to his side clearly satisfied with his work. After taking it in you turned back to Seonghwa who looked pleased himself.
“You’ve been so good baby, want Daddy to fuck you? Nice and deep how you like it?” You practically purred at his words. It’s true so far you had enjoyed yourself, but there was nothing quite like when Seonghwa filled you up with his cock.
“Please fuck me Daddy” you whispered, leaning in close to him with your biggest doll eyes, and your hands gripping his shoulder. Seonghwa smiled at you, content with your answer.
A moment later he had freed his duck from his jeans and was stroking it leisurely. Your mouth watered. Oh, the way he could make you feel, how many times he had made you cum. As Seonghwa sunk into the couch, taking a moment to watch you squirm on his lap he truly looked too powerful. The calm in the sea of chaos that had unfolded that night, it was unfair how he made your heart skip a beat. With one quick glance over your shoulder, he called out to Wooyoung one last time.
“I’d start doing as you were told Wooyoung, wouldn’t want the others to get impatient with you,”
At that, you heard the first grunt of Wooyoung grinding helplessly on the pillow, then whimpering at how the surface was too soft to gain any friction over his pants. The poor boy was at his wit's end.
But your attention was drawn back to the man in front of you before you had time to feel sorry for Wooyoung. One of his fingers had slipped inside you once again to test the waters. You flinched at the intrusion, your body was utterly spent, and the overstimulation would be hell, but as God, as your witness, you were going to take your boyfriend's cock tonight.
“Are you sure your ok baby? Wouldn’t want to push you too far after the night you’ve had.” He spoke with mild concern, but he already knew the answer.
“No! I want to! I can take it!” You spoke with urgency.
“Absolutely sure sweetpea?” He asked one last time. Your hand gripping his shirt twisted and shook. You looked at him with the most pleading look you could muster.
“Please fuck me, Daddy.”
“Ok then,” he replied with a smile. Not once today had you forgotten your manners or rules, after dealing with the whimpering boy behind you for an evening he was glad to have his perfect baby girl still being as good as ever.
Seonghwa hoisted your hips to be level with his. Seonghwa had a thing about eye contact while he fucked you, so you did your best to not break it as the tip of his cock teased your entrance.
To be completely honest, but the focus of the rest of the room seemed to now be on Wooyoung, who was still rutting against the pillow like a dog, and they all seemed to be enjoying the show far too much to notice the tender way Seonghwa pulled your body down flush against his hips and down onto his cock. Although the broken whipper that came from you at the feeling overwhelming sensation did turn a few heads.
Your knees were shaking and your hands trembling. You had been right, the overstimulation was making it too hard to move on your own. But Seonghwa was attentive as always. He wrapped an arm around your waist and used it to slowly work you up and down on his cock. Each thrust he made felt like pins and needles in the best way possible. After Seonghwa had worked up a steady rhythm a numbing pleasure had already begun to build. Looking deep into your boyfriend's eyes you placed and hand on your tummy and after moving it around for a bit you could feel him moving inside you. You groaned out, this position had always been the best for deep penetration anyways.
“Daddy I can feel you inside me,” you whipper as he picks up speed. The room was beginning to sound like a symphony of lewd cries and squelching noises coming from both you and Wooyoung. Not to mention the panting and groaning coming from the others in the room, who had lost any semblance of shame and were jerking off freely to the unexpected yet beautiful sight. The other boy's eyes kept flicking back and forth, unable to decide which one was more arousing to watch. Many of them had already gotten themselves off before now and were now sporting half-hard cocks as they were faced with the delightful scene.
“I know baby girl, I know how much you love to be stuffed full of cock. And now everyone else knows too.” Seonghwa replied clearly satisfied with himself. His hand came up to your jaw and he delivered a particularly hard thrust and pulled your hips down to match it. You were already losing focus of the world around you and the pleasure was mounting rapidly. At the force of the thrust, your eyes almost dropped closed but Seonghwa pulled your head forward and they opened a bit wider.
“Now everyone knows how good you are for me, baby. My good little girl, who loves taking my cock.” Seonghwa was speaking in such a low grumbling voice it was almost like he was talking to himself rather than you like he was reminding himself of what he had accomplished today. You could tell that after waiting all night for stimulation he was also getting close to his own edge, and if you listen to the whiny panting of the boy behind you you could tell he was getting desperate for the release that would never come from the pillow.
You almost lost eye contact again when Seonghwa’s thrusts became sloppy. Increased pace but with less consistency was the tell-tale sign that Seonghwa was going to cum, but luckily for him, it was this exact treatment that made your head spin. Your lower half was numb with biting pleasure and it was all you could do to keep your eyes open to watch the sweat dripping down Seonghwa’s forehead as he carried on with determination. The others had caught on to what was about to happen and many were now speeding up their ministrations to themselves to climax at the same time as you and your boyfriend.
Seonghwa’s hand wound its way into your hair and used it to crash your lips onto his is a heated, wet, and messy kiss. Any second now and you would lose yourself to the pleasure. You detached your lips just enough to pant into Seonghwa’s lips,
“Daddy, in cumming”
“Damn right you are,” he moaned in response.
It was wise of him to reattach your lips before you came undone. Even with him muffling your noises there was no way the sounds you made didn’t echo around the room and ring In everyone’s ears. Seonghwa kept his pace, pushing more and more whinnies out of you till you almost jumped away from him in overstimulation, butter grip on your waist didn’t let you get far. There were tears in your eyes by the time Seonghwa finally came. Your orgasm had turned silent almost immediately after and your mouth hung wide open in an empty moan. Your brain had all but shut off when the feeling of your boyfriend's cum spilling into you registered into your brain.
Saying you blacked out would be a strong word. But when your eyes fell closed they didn’t seem to want to open. You and Seonghwa stayed connected for what seemed like an eternity before he pulled out of you with a groan and laid you gently down onto the couch to his side.
You were dead weight at this point. But when you felt Seonghwa stand up you pried your eyes open the slightest bit once you realized that the unmistakable noises of a begging Wooyoung had filled your ears.
Seonghwa walked around to stand in front of him. Most of the others in the room were now basking in the afterglow of their own orgasms but had perked up to watch.
“Please, please, please, Daddy. Please let me cum. I promise I’ll be good, I promise I won’t bother you as much, I promise, please-“
Wooyoung ramblings we’re cut short by Seonghwa taking hold of Wooyoung’s head and turning it up to look him in the eyes.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear,” Seonghwa replied. Wooyoung gasped a sigh of relief. Seonghwa motioned for Yeosang to come over and untie the poor boy and hopefully get him some relief. But Seonghwa didn’t care about that part, his eyes were now back on you. His sweet perfect, obedient little girl.

Lookie | Bokuto Kōtarō
Pairing: Bokuto X Reader (female) ft. Kuroo, Kenma, and Akaashi
Genre: fluffyyy, surprise domestic
Author’s Note: I WANNA BE Y/N
Tumblr media
gif from @rivaillerose
“Kenma, you gotta hurry or else you’re gonna get blown away,” Kuroo called as he paused, the bitter frozen winter wind blowing right into his face
He tightened his grip around the bag in his hand while Kenma shuffled through the inches high snow, not a single big of his face showing as he hid himself in his bundled layers to keep warm
The two walked through the blizzard with Kuroo walking behind Kenma, walking toward the house
With a brief knock on the door, the door opened to Akaashi as he stood there
“Where’s Kenma?” He asked
“Here,” Kuroo raised his arm, revealing Kenma at his side, facing into Kuroo’s body to stay as warm as possible
The two entered and stripped their layers and boots, letting the warmth envelope the two of them completely
“Thanks for bringing chips,” Akaashi said as he took the bag from Kuroo
“No problem. Are Bokuto and Y/N running late again?” Kuroo asked as he noted the silence in the house
“Actually no, they got here a few hours ago. They’re on the couch.”
And with that, the three of them made their way to the living room of Akaashi’s house, for the  occasional movie night and sleepover
The three walked in on Bokuto as comfy in his regular spot on the couch, a warm blanket nu, smiley as ever but quieter than normal and with his face looking down into his sweater
“What’re you doing?”
“And where’s Y/N?” Kenma spoke as he quite enjoyed your company yet you were nowhere to be found
“Shhh,” Bokuto shushed them almost louder than the two cats spoke
He was giddy and he seemed like he was about to explode from excitement or something but he couldn’t
“Lookie!” He happily waved the two over as he pulled his collar
“Huh?” Kuroo confused as ever
The two hesitated as they just looked to Akaashi
“Just trust him,” Akaashi commented from the side, smiling himself at his best friends
The two leaned forward and their questions had been answered
There you were, fast asleep against Bokuto’s bare chest inside his sweater, cuddled close beneath the blanket too
It was like there were stars forming in Bokuto’s eyes as he adorned you in the position you were in
“She looks so comfy,” Kenma said quietly, a tinge of envy in his voice as he was still freezing cold from the journey here
“She actually has a bit of a fever-“
“But she can’t go home in his weather or she’ll get even worse and I didn’t want her to be alone while we were all watching a movie, so she’s here with me,” Bokuto cut off Akaashi but spoke every word with his chest as he squeezed you closer to him
“Alright then,” Kuroo said quietly, only for Bokuto to dramatically shush him once again
“Don’t wake my little bean,” the ace practically whisper yelled to Kuroo
“I didn’t even- fine,” he gave up as he grabbed a blanket and found his seat
For the rest of the night, Bokuto could hardly focus on the movie
His heart did flips every time he looked into his shirt and there you were, your cheek squished against his warm skin, your lips jutted out just a bit so it looked like you were pouting
Your hair and breath tickled his chest and stomach but he didn’t mind it a single bit
The others could hear and feel the bubbliness emanating from his persona throughout the entire movies
The little laugh he would give when you moved a little or when he played with your hair or booped your face
His occasional movement, that you had gotten used to sleeping on him, to reposition himself
But also how quiet he was whenever a jump scare popped up
He was always the first one to yell or leave the room but not tonight
He couldn’t focus
How could he when you were right there and you were fast asleep on him
You were his precious little bean and he wanted to make sure you got all the rest you needed to make a speedy recovery
But oh all the times he had to refrain himself with smothering you with his kisses
He just wanted you to shower you with all the love in his big heart for you
He wrapped his arms and legs around you, not wanting to let you go even for a millisecond tonight
Domestic bonus:
The popcorn popped in the microwave as the paper brown bag expanded and expanded, always making you nervous that one day you would open it and it would just explode into your face
but you just watched as the bag expanded
you could hear subtle noises coming from the living room but before you could look, the final beep of the microwave sounded off in the kitchen
“Hot, hot, hot.” You barely held onto the hot bag with your fingertips as you juggled it to prevent burning yourself
You poured the bag into a large bowl, bringing it to your living room
and that’s when your heart melted
“Peek-a-boo!” your husband lifted the collar of his shirt, his face disappearing as he called, the living room erupting with laughter from your daughter as she giggled contently
“Where’d she go?” He “closed” the collar of his baggy tank top, teasing her as your little girl hid herself under his shirt, hiding her face into his chest
“Here she is!” he opened his collar again, more laughter ans squeals erupting from both of them as he pulled her out, sitting her in his lap, playing with her, giving her butterfly kisses as her small hands reached out to cup his face
“She’s swo cwute,” he turned to you, his cheeks being squished by his daughter. “Ooh! Popcown!”
Both their eyes lit up as they turned to you, Kotaro lifting his baby girl in his arms as he made his way over to your side
Though only you and Kotaro ate the popcorn while your baby girl played with his clean hand, the occasional giggle coming from her as he tickled her
but to be honest, the two of you could barely pay attention to the tv when you two had your little girl

Shoto Todoroki is supposed to be a hero prodigy. Shoto Todoroki is supposed to stand tall and strong, and keep his father's hero legacy alive.
And he's all of those things. Except for late at night when he comes creeping into your dorm with the key you gave him to crawl underneath the covers with you because of a nightmare he had.
"I'm sorry. I can go if you want." Is what he says the first time he comes to your dorm, but knocking this time because you had yet to give him his own key.
"You've gotta at least tell me what's wrong first." You say gently, and he crumbles. He mumbles that it was just a silly little nightmare as tears roll slowly down his face and you pull him into your dorm to cuddle.
"It's not stupid if it woke you up, Sho," You say as he pulls you into him like you're a teddy bear. And it’s always a little awkward cuddling with him after he’s had a nightmare, his body fluctuating sporadically between hot and cold, but you don’t mind because the longer he holds you the faster you fall back asleep.
You ask him if he wants to tell you about it, but Shoto never does, saying that he’s already forgotten, but the feeling stays longer than the visual. And you nod, and drift off faster than you should, but Shoto doesn’t mind - he never does - and he’s so completely lost in you. He’s so completely enamored by you, and he’s never been so happy to be lost.
He continues to knock for his next five visits after the first night, and you eventually get tired of him waking you up in the dead of the night so you give him his own key.
The seventh time he shows up at your door, he doesn’t use the key. No, instead, he stands outside your door and calls you. The dial tone rings in his ear and it doesn’t help soothe the tightness in his chest or the lump in his throat at all, and he wonders if it’s really so bad for him to use the key you’d given him. Eventually though, you answer - you always do - and he falls in love with you all over again.
“Sho?” You ask, voice scratchy and stiff, and he can hear you through the door, “What’s going on?”
It’s technically a stupid question to ask, you know he’d only ever call you so late at night if he’d had a nightmare, but he also doesn’t call you very often either.
“Can I come in?” Shoto asks, and you make a groggy noise of confusion.
“What d’ya mean, Sho?”
“Can I come in?” He repeats, and then softly knocks twice on your door.
You hang up then, and Shoto watches your door swing open with tears pricking at his eyes. And when you drag him into bed with you the world feels like it could never be wide enough.
Then, your world fell apart.
The pillars that held up Japan’s hero society crumbled in a measly seven hours.
With too many prison breaks, fatalities, and injuries to count, Shoto could care less. Because you were gone. He’d been with you early that morning, before everything fell apart.
He’d been in bed with you, cuddled up close and basking in your presence, the two of you had changed into your hero costumes together. He’d been with you for hundreds of hours too little that morning, and he wants to know where you are.
He asks his older brother Natsuo where you are by showing him the little sticky note that he’d written the question on and shown to every nurse, doctor, teacher, and friend that came in to see him. His throat had been burned to hell, and he wished more than anything to get up and ask every damned person in the hospital where you were.
He’s supposed to be talking about Touya - he’s not Touya anymore, he has to remind to himself, that man is Dabi, not Touya - and all he can think about is you.
Shoto has to remind himself that he can’t cry. Because right now, the people around him need him to be strong, and that includes you, where ever you are. He hopes you can feel him wavering, desperately wishes for you to show up.
It’s on his sixth night in the hospital that somebody finally tells him where you are. It’s Bakugo, surprisingly enough.
“Hey, IcyHot,” Bakugo greets, and Shoto uses text-to-speech to ask him if he should even be walking. The blonde is covered in just as many bandages as Shoto, and when Aizawa had come by on his third day in the hospital, Shoto had been told all about everybody’s condition except yours.
“Yeah, i’m fine,” Bakugo says, easing himself into hard plastic chair next to Shoto’s hospital bed, “Y/N’s not though.”
Shoto croaks out a pathetic noise, but Bakugo doesn’t need prompting.
“All the other damn extras said not to say anything to you,” Bakugo continues, and for the first time ever, the cocky blonde is visibly nervous, worried, even, “Y/N’s in the ICU. They haven’t stabilized since they got in. Nobody’s told me what happened to them, but apparently Dunce Face was one of the last people to see her before she was brought here. He... He thought that Y/N was already dead when he last saw them. They’re in a medically induced coma, according to Mr.Aizawa.”
Shoto sits there, in silence except for the quiet humming of the AC unit, for thirty minutes. Bakugo sits with him, just as quiet.
“Where are they now?” Shoto’s phone asks, the words choppy and abrupt, and Bakugo looks pained when he tells him your room number. Neither of them do anything for a while after that, and Bakugo sits in the hard plastic chair that’d begun to make his butt sore until Shoto falls asleep with a million things on the tip of his tongue.
Shoto is released from the hospital four days later, extensive healing and pain meds made sure of that, and nobody had been allowed to see you yet. He’d asked around, and eventually he learned that you’d undergone six different procedures since you’d arrived.
Tonight would be your seventh.
It’s hot. Very hot.
The flames are blue, and a few of them lick at you, but they don’t burn. There’s a battle cry from both sides, and you watch as villains pour from the Gunga Mountain Villa. It takes five minutes, and war has broken out all around you.
You’re fighting too, better suited for close combat, and you’re watching your classmates, your friends being battered around, fighting in a war that they shouldn’t be fighting.
You’re the first to make inside the building, and you’re vaguely aware that you’re bleeding. Fatgum tells you to retreat, telling you that you look on the verge of death. You tell him you’re fine.
You’re not fine. The building is rumbling, and the ceiling’s begun to cave in, it’s hard to breathe, and you can’t see through the blood that’s caked over your left eye.
The pillars fall in seven seconds, and you fall too.
You call for him, for Shoto, in the last three seconds of your consciousness, you call for him.
It’s dark.
When you wake up, really wake up and open your eyes to look right into the harsh white fluorescent lights of your hospital room, nobody’s there with you. There’s a vase of dying roses on the windowsill, and you can already tell from the crisp handwriting on the brown tag that Shoto had been the one to leave them. And it’s cold, but you prefer that to the blazing heat you’d felt when you’d fallen asleep.
Where is Sho anyway?
Your heart monitor steadily beeps away, and when a nurse comes in to check your vitals she’s surprised to see you’re awake. And even more surprised when the first thing you ask for is Shoto.
“Sho,” You say, and your voice is dry and raw and barely a whisper, “Where’s Sho?”
The nurse stares at you wide-eyes for a moment, before she gets you a little dixie cup of water.
“Who’s Sho?” She asks, and you struggle to swallow the little cup of water she’d given you.
“Shoto Todoroki,” You say, “Is he here?”
The nurse purses her lips, and looks at you sadly, and you wonder what she’s thinking about before she tells you that she’ll be right back with the doctor. She leaves three more dixie cups of water on your foldaway table before leaving.
You sit there for almost an hour before the door opens again, and it’s a horrible hour because every time you close your eyes all you can see is the bloody battle that should have killed you.
The doctor comes in first, and right behind him is the person you’d been thinking about since you’d woken up. You’d been with him all that morning before the war, and all that night. And you were with him now.
The doctor tells you what day it is, and you start crying when he tells you it’s been almost a month since you’d first been admitted to the hospital.
“Fuck,” You whimper, voice crackling and breaking as you reach out for Shoto, and he’s there - he always is - and his hand feels so good in yours - it always does - and you start crying even harder when you see the tears in his eyes. “I’m so sorry, Sho. You look so tired.”
“I love you,” And he says it like there will never be another chance to say it, and once the first ‘I love you’ leaves his mouth fifty more follow. And the doctor looks you over as best he can, before telling you that you’re cleared for visitors and that you’d be able to leave within the week.
And as Shoto begins to cry he has to remind himself that he is supposed to be a hero prodigy. That he’s supposed to stand tall and strong, and keep his father's hero legacy alive. But you hold onto his fingers so tightly, and for once, you’re asking if you can come over because you’ve just had a nightmare. It’s a shared nightmare, Shoto tells you, shared by millions.
Two days later you’re allowed to go back home, back to the dorms, and Shoto has to help you get dressed because you can barely breathe standing up let alone walk without your legs collapsing. Shoto kisses your tears away when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. You’re covered in scars, and there are still stitches in places where the wounds were slower to heal.
Your whole world fell apart in seven hours that day, and it continued to fall apart after that. Shoto’s there for you the whole way back to UA, and he tells you that your school, your second home, had become a home to thousands of others too. Shoto had given his dorm away and he’d been staying at his family home while you’d been in the hospital.
But your dorm is still there. And nothing’s changed at all.
“I’ve also been staying here too,” Shoto tells you when he helps you into bed, “I hope you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind at all, Sho,” You tell him - you never do mind - and he crawls into bed next to you, minding your right knee with it’s poky little stitches and the new metal patella that replaced the kneecap you’d shattered during the war.
Japan fell apart in four days, Shoto tells you, and you can’t find it in you to care, because the world is too big and too wide but Shoto makes it feel smaller.
It was dark, when the pillars fell. And the two of you are blind, lost in it, and you’d never been so afraid of being lost.
“I don’t think I can go back to hero work,” You tell him early the next morning, as he gets dressed to go back to his family home, “Not for a long time.”
“That’s okay, my love,” He replies, he won’t tell you, but he’s not sure he wants you to go back, “Do you want to come home with me?”
He doesn’t need to ask, because he would have taken you with him anyway.
“Yeah,” You tell him, and you struggle to push yourself up into a sitting position, “Just... Will you promise me something?”
“Anything.”
“Promise me you won’t die.”
It’s stupid thing to ask for, you know it is. Because everybody dies eventually, but you don’t know what you’d do if you lost him. The two of you are lost, but at least you’re together.
Shoto doesn’t need to question it, because he’d thought you were dead for almost a whole week. And he doesn’t ever want to be without you, even though he knows he’ll have to.
“I promise you, Y/N, I won’t ever leave you, and I won’t die.”
It’s dark, Shoto thinks, as he helps you into the back of his father’s car, But it’s much less dark with you.

you would hardly consider mark lee to be your friend. colleague, senior if you really had to watch your honorifics around the staff but friend would be an exaggeration
interactions with him when you were a trainees together were limited and short. he was a shy boy he barely met your eyes or anyone’s for that matter as he was still getting accustomed to the new country he was continuing his life in. as soon as mark arrived he threw himself into practicing at a young age which to assumed was to cope with the new changes in his life
all the late nights you walked passed the dance practice room or the studio and saw the boy practicing himself to the bone, seemed to pay off as mark debuted a whole year before you
there was no sense of resentment as you knew the boy worked hard without ever telling him to his face, you were happy for him
though none of the events in his life impacted yours as you continued with your daily lessons and dance practices. seeing all of you fellow friends who debuted before you just motivated you to work harder
it was finally your turn, a few trainees you became close to were finally given the opportunity to debut. you could easily say there was nothing like the preparation for your groups debut
majority of the stuff you have done in the past to prepare yourself were individual so you were stepping into foreign territory
you moved away from your parents and moved into a dorm with your members. the five of you ate together, practiced together and recorded together, which was crucial to build the relationship with one another
after spending so much time together, you could confidently call them your best friends, something you never experienced since moving to korea
after debut you rarely saw mark, he was a busybody even when his group was not promoting, he was almost always doing other schedules and promotions
for the entire year, you almost completely forgot who mark lee even is
well until now
you were told to dress nicely by your manager. to meet her downstairs for whatever reason while all you members remained asleep from the long night of recording an ost for a drama, you couldn’t careless about
while hoping the backseat of the van, your manager sat beside you and looked at you with tired eyes. you felt bad for her, she was always there. always punctual and never failed to set you guys straight. what a lot of you guys forgot to realize at times was the she had a life too and a family outside of the group
she deserved better than babysitting a bunch of 20 something year olds
“honey, just a heads up, you are gonna have a meeting with the creative team today” she finally spoke as she sent you a weak smile
“why just me?” you sat up as you placed your airpods in your ear but held back from playing anything
“i am not too sure, i am sorry” manager lim apologized with her face already flushed. you raised your hand lightly telling her it's fine
“its okay, a surprise wont kill me?”
 that was your first wrong
when you walked into the room, all eyes were on you as if you were late. you noticed a man who looked much older than manager lim stand up first as he bowed. next to him was a brown haired boy who you instantly recognized as mark. why was he here anyways?
“ah, you are finally here” you met with the eyes of the man you knew as mr. hong who was the head of the creative team that usually worked with your group as well as nct. The questions were still floating around in your head, why were you and mark the only one present?  with the curiosity still lingering in your thoughts, you bowed to the staff that were in the room
when you got to mark, his head was already tilted downwards, you barely even got a glimpse at the boy before bowing quickly and slipping into the seat closest to you at the table
“i am sure the two of you are curious as to why it is just you and not your members?” mr. hong smiled obviously trying to ease up the stiffness that was clear as day
mark and you nodded respectfully awaiting the answer for their long lasting questions, “we have been planning for you to start your solo career later this year. we have been working really hard trying to think of ways to get you started” he spoke towards you as your expression remained unresponsive
“yeah, we really appreciate your time and effort” manager lim bowed, her eyes widened as she noticed your stiff figure, she pinched your thigh roughly, have some respect, she mouthed to you as you quickly ducked your head while rubbing their throbbing stop on your thigh
“of course, uh” mr. hong cleared his voice, why did he look so nervous anyways?, “mark, you have been our ace for so long and in my opinion no one is a better rapper than you” mr. hong praised the boy across from you as mark quickly became flustered. he never did know how to take compliments.
mark muttered a quick thank you before looking back down at his hands, “both of you guys are very talented so we came up with the idea that the both of you should collab together” you stopped all your movements as you heard the last word fall from mr. hong’s lips, collab?
you sat up straight in your chair, opening your mouth to decline the idea right way until you felt manager lim grab your shoulder and guide you back into your seat
“collab? i thought vixen were having a comeback soon” manager lim spoke up, taking the words right out of your mouth
“sooyoung-ah, it's still early in the year. the kids will have plenty of time to resume their comeback preparation” mr. hong quickly said as you felt manager lim sigh lowly from her spot next to you
you felt your blood boil and it was clear that you were seeing red right now. after all the preparation the five of you and manager lim have done. the endless dark nights at the studio and early morning win the dance practice rooms for the last two weeks are all stopping all because of mark lee?
the more you thought about it the angrier you became. they care so much about their precious that they have to mess with my girl’s comeback? you turned to manager lim with  a attonshed expression painted all over your face
looking at the pleading expression on manager lim’s face was enough to tell you that you had to hold your tongue and refrain from saying all the things that were racing through your mind
you let out a breath before looking up at mark who still refused to meet your eyes, was he some sort of coward? how could he avoid your gaze after he single handedly ruined your group's chances at an early comeback this year? not only that but trampled all over your solo activities being well solo
“the two of you are the same in age, so why not drop honorifics” mr. hong chuckled lightly still trying to slice through the tension in the room. to your horror, mark nodded and you followed suit
“ah great to see the two of you get a long already” mr. hong clapped as he patted his hand on mark’s shoulder but knew better than to come near you with that deadly expression your face
“when we were thinking of a concept we came up with something like a new and young love concept. the two of you are so young and mark has his adorable boy-ish charm” you recognized the voice came from miss kim. you almost gagged at his words direct towards the brown haired boy
“also it would be good for you to do a more soft concept for once to show your fans your duality” she winked at you, it was true your group were more use to darker and sexier concepts
you had no words so you settled on a simple nod, for the first time since you came into the room you were one avoiding marks eyes they fell open your figure
he hasn't had a good look at you since god knows how long. your hair was short, contrasting the lengthy black hair you had when he first met you. was it seven years ago already? he lost track of time as soon as he became a trainee. it was like he was introduced into a whole new world
mark suddenly remembered the little conversations he had with you in the past. he could barely even let out one word to you at school or at training classes because at that time girls were an unsolved mystery to him. you were just teenagers back then. ironic that the two of you see each other for the first time in so long, on terms such as these
“the two of you are very talented so we want you to be a part of the songwriting process” bait. almost everyone in the agency knew you were a songwriting junkie, but to write a song with mark? about love? even that did not seem possible
“oh okay” mark finally chirped in. your head shot up as you looked at him like he was a madman, why would he agree so quickly?
“great! I hope you guys become good friends during this process. lets work hard!” mr. hong collected his papers that were scattered across the desk and made his way out the room. you stood up and bowed to him respectfully and the rest of the staff as they exited the room
without giving mark another glance, grabbed your phone from the table before walking out with pure rage. you heard manager lim’s heels clacking from behind you as she tried to catch up to you
mark sat there for an extra moment before his manager patted him on the shoulder and told him it’s time to go back to the dorm
mark was so out of it he couldn’t stop thinking about your actions and body language while you were in the room. you seemed upset, no you seeemed angry
was it because of him? what did he do do make you so mad at him?
he would make sure to ask you sometime along the road, considering this would not be the last time he would see you
the two of you had a lot of work to do together, starting now

Tomorrow | Ushijima
tags/warnings: angst, comfort, fem!reader, mentions of blood/medical procedure, implied depression if you squint
wc: 2.7k
a/n: i hope this isn't too sad, but i decided to try writing beyond my usual genre. also i am not a doctor so i may not be entirely accurate with this. this is technically gonna be a two shot now that i think about it. part two may take a bit though.
Tumblr media
Practicing, practicing, practicing. Serving and spiking for hours. Years of hard work had come to this. Ushijima had now qualified to try out for the national team. He was very excited though you would never see it on his face and he was grateful to you for your support. It wasn't easy maintaining your relationship through his away games and his hours spent tirelessly practicing, but you had made it. Tryouts were in June, a short 6 months away and Ushijima was working harder than ever.
"Welcome back Toshi." You greeted as he entered the house drenched in sweat from his afternoon jog. "Good afternoon," he replied, "I'm heading to take a shower before lunch. I won't be too long." And with that, he disappeared into the master bedroom to bathe. You continued putting the finishing touches on lunch. The lasagna was finished and already cooling and the peach cobbler was almost done baking. Tryouts weighed heavily on your mind also. You knew Ushijima was working hard but wasn't he working a little too hard? He's a logical man to a fault but still, this felt a little unstable. Almost unlike him. You pushed the thoughts out of your head and put lunch on the table. He wouldn't overwork himself, not him.
Tumblr media
"Lunch was delicious." approved Ushijima, as he started clearing the dishes. "Give my compliments to the chef." You chuckled. "So how is the ace of this household going to spend his day off?" He paused for a minute in thought. Please don't let it be more training. He turned to you and smiled. "How about we start the show you've been telling me to watch. We can close the blinds and spend the rest of the afternoon on the couch if you'd like." You were giddy at the thought. "That sounds amazing! I'll go set it up and I'll leave you to the dishes." "Sounds like a plan."
You turned on the movie and settled in. However, Ushijima could tell something was bothering you but waited until after the show to tactfully address it.
"I was thinking, and I'd like you to see one of our practice games next week. I already asked the coach and he said it would be fine. I don't want you to think I'm overdoing it so I'd like to you come and see my progress." He looked at you expectantly. You felt the heat rise to in your face with excitement. "Really? I'd love that!" You squealed. "What day were you thinking?" "How does next week Wednesday sound?" "Perfect!"
Tumblr media
Time flew and before you knew it, you were driving down to the gym where Ushijima was having his practice match. You parked and quietly tiptoed into the gym, not that anyone would notice you over the rapid smashes of the volleyball. You settled into the seats on the far side of the gym. The game was still in view but you were a safe distance away. Thanks to an unfortunate incident with an erratic spike, you knew to keep your distance.
Scanning the gym you saw that Ushijima was up to serve. The ball flew up in the air before making a solid connection with his palm. The bull rocketed over the net, barely giving the opposing team's libero any time to respond. Somehow they managed to receive it but it ended up being a chance ball for Ushijima's team. It was set perfectly to Ushijima who executed the cleanest line shot you'd ever seen. He was in top form. "Nice kill! His teammates cheered.
Before you knew it, they were in the middle of another rally. Unlike his high school days, Ushijima did a lot more receiving even though it wasn't his strong point. This rally was particularly long with neither side wavering. Suddenly, the opposing team did a block wipe and it launched towards the out area. Ushijima lunged for it with a speed you'd never seen before. He had improved. But then it happened. The snap was followed by a loud bellow as Ushijima collapsed. Time froze. His teammates rushed over and medics came too. An ambulance was called. You got in it. Ushijima writhing in pain the whole time.
What had happened? You wondered and looked down at him in the stretcher as the ambulance rushed to the hospital. His knee. You saw it now. It was twisted at an insanely painful angle. Knees were not supposed to bend to the side and yet his was. The swelling was intense and purple and you couldn't bear to look anymore. Instead, you turned your attention to Ushijima's face. His usually somber olive eyes now had tears in them. Your chest tightened and you felt tears build in yours as well. Kissing his forehead, you held his hand as he eventually lost consciousness.
Tumblr media
You sat impatiently in the sterile waiting room chair as Ushijima was taken into surgery. He had partially torn his ACL and completely torn his anterior knee ligament. You were more concerned about him being alright but you couldn't help but think of the unavoidable. Would he be able to play volleyball again?
You were told the surgery would take 2-3 hours. 2 hours in, Tendou arrived. "I came as soon as I got your text. How are you doing?" He asked, giving you a hug. You started sniffling on his shoulder, hot tears racing down your cheeks. "Hey, hey it's alright. Let it all out." he comforted, pulling your tighter. You began to sob as he sat you down. "He's in surgery now so all we can do is wait. Drink some water." He offered you a bottle on the table next to you. As you sipped, he continued.
"When was the last time you ate?"
You paused, realizing you weren't sure of the answer. You ate lunch before going to the practice match but that was at least 6 hours ago. But before you could respond, Tendou interrupted your thoughts. "I'm sure it's been at least 8 hours. Let's get something before you end up a patient." And with that, you headed to the cafeteria.
There were various options available. Their enticing aromas tickling your nose, but you still didn't feel ready to eat. Tendou guided you over to the deli aisle to find something to take back to the waiting area. Chicken sandwiches, greek salads, and then you saw it. Pickled plum onigiri. Catching a glimpse of your watery eyes, Tendou wordlessly purchased the rice ball and you returned to the waiting room.
"So how are you feeling?" You looked up, the tears making your onigiri saltier as you munched. "This was his favorite food." You muttered. "Now, now, don't talk as if he's dead. I'm sure he'll be out soon." The redhead patted your head. "However, if you don't wanna talk about how you feel, I'm more than happy to sit with you until he gets out. I'll be here if you need anything." Nodding, you returned to your meal, thoughts racing inside your head. What if something goes wrong during surgery? Will he be able to walk? How long will recovery be? When can he come home? How will he handle it? What if they need to amputate? A clear voice cut into your thoughts.
"[Y/N], the surgery was successful and Ushijima is now in recovery."
You practically jumped to your feet, however, you began to sway a little as Tendou stabilized you. The exhaustion began to set in and you slowly sat back down. "Thank you, nurse. Are we allowed to go in?" He asked concernedly. "He should be waking up soon but you can see him. He's right down this hall."
Tumblr media
The corridor was a blur. 303, 304, and... Room 305! Quietly, the door opened and you were able to look inside. There Ushiwaka lay, all 6 feet 3 inches of himself on the stark white hospital bed. His knee was covered in bandages and his face was gradually becoming more and more strained. He was beginning to feel the pain from the surgery. You felt the tension grow in your chest as he began to groan, the nurse went over to him to check his vitals. "Everything looks good. Some pain is to be expected but I'm giving you some medication to alleviate some of it. You'll be monitored and the painkillers will be administered every few hours." She washed her hands and walked towards the door. "Visiting hours end at 11 so you have 45 minutes." Tendou thanked her and the two of you went inside.
It was silent minus the occasional beeps and whirrs of the room's equipment. Ushijima shifted and attempted to open his eyes before squeezing them shut again. You reached for his hand and held it gently. "It's alright Wakkun, the surgery went well and you're in recovery. Everything is going to be fine." You felt his hand relax, and despite the assurance your voice held, your eyes betrayed you as you felt more tears. "We just stopped in to say hi but we'll be back tomorrow morning. Sleep well Wakatoshi-kun." And with that Tendou, led you out the room and gingerly closed the door behind him. "Let's go home, I'll spend the night by you so you don't have to be alone."
Tumblr media
The apartment was still too empty even with Tendou in the living room. He had long passed out on the couch but you were all alone in the bedroom. Even wearing Ushijima's jersey didn't help, the bed was still too empty. Whenever you were sad or down. You could bury your face in his chest and he would hold you. He would listen if you talked about what was bothering you, but he would always hold you. But now he's.... Tears began to fall again, staining the pillow and his jersey. Despite your sorrow, the exhaustion took over and you fell into a fitful sleep.
Morning came and with it the smell of Tendou's famous French toast. Somehow you had an appetite despite the harrowing day prior. You trudged into the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water. "Good morning!" Tendou chirped, elaborately flipping the toast. "I know you're probably itching to get to Ushijima but as your friend, I refuse to let you leave without a solid breakfast." He slid a plate over. The golden French toast was adorned with raspberries, almonds, and a swirl of whipped cream. Complimented by a drizzle of chocolate and powdered sugar on the corners. You blinked at the sugary meal. "Tendou, if I eat this, I am going to get diabetes." "Well," He responded, flipping another piece. "We're going to the hospital so you'll be in the right place." Upon hearing the silence he meekly asked "Too soon?" You chuckled and took a bite of the toast. "Nope, it's just the perfect time."
Back at the hospital. Ushijima had woken up for the umpteenth time this morning. Every time he got to sleep the pain would wake up back up. Especially when it was time for him to get another dose. The nurses were nice and he understood that there was a lot of pain ahead, but he had also avoided asking the question that plagued him most. Would he be able to play volleyball again? However, it turned out that he didn't need to ask because the surgeon had just come in to give him instructions for his recovery. No strenuous activity for the next 9 months. And an entire year before he could even attempt volleyball again. This was not good news. It was already obvious that he would not be able to try out for the national team this year, but this made him wonder if he'd be able to play again. He decided to give it his all in recovery just for the hope of playing again.
Weeks past. Ushijima gave 110% in physical therapy. It was nice to have him home again but he struggled so much. Walking was excruciatingly painful and seeing his pained face twisted your heart in agony. However, he seemed to have adjusted well mentally. He still watched his teammates' games and seemed pleasant enough when they came to visit, but you couldn't help but think he was taking it a little too well. After all, volleyball was his passion and his career and it had been taken so quickly. Shouldn't he be at least frustrated?
The days went on and soon 6 months had passed. He was walking better now but was still banned from strenuous activity. But since he could do things on his own around the house, he suggested that you go out with some of your friends for the evening. "Are you sure? I don't want you to get into any trouble?" He gently chuckled. "I'll be fine. You haven't done anything for yourself in so long so go out and have fun." You quickly got dressed and went out with your friends. The evening was lots of fun and within no time it was late and you headed home.
The house was silent. After all it was almost midnight and Ushijima always kept a strict nighttime ritual. Sneaking in and quietly shutting the door behind you, you placed your keys on the hook and slipped out your shoes. Suddenly, you heard a noise from the bedroom. Peeking in, you Ushijima having a night terror. "It hurts." He whimpered as tears streamed down his face. Fitfully tossing and turning, drenched with sweat. His large fists clinging to the sheets. You rushed over.
"Hey," you whispered gently, wiping his face. "It's alright. Nothing is hurting you." He trembled. He's still asleep. Hopefully it'll go away. "I'm right here with you. You don't have to worry." You continued whispering softly until you felt his body gradually relax. The tears slowed down to a trickle. It was finally over. You quietly held him and stroked his face until you also fell asleep.
When morning arrived, Ushijima woke up first, still in your arms. "What time did you get back last night?" Slowly opening your eyes, you yawned. "Good morning, I think around midnight." "Oh." The short, rather clipped reply made you replay the events of last night in your head. "I think you had a night terror last night." He sat up and avoided your gaze. "Probably, they've been somewhat frequent I suppose." Somewhat frequent? Are these a normal thing for him? "Do these happen often Wakkun?" He shifted uncomfortably, and you managed to get a glimpse of his olive eyes which were rapidly becoming moist. "A-almost every night." He whispered. The words cut through the clear morning. Almost every night? Why didn't he tell me anything? "Why didn't you sa-" But he began speaking before you could finish.
"Since I got out of the hospital, they started happening. I have nightmares of the accident almost every night. I can hear the ligaments tear and they hurt in my sleep." He took a shaky breath before continuing. "The nightmares were always worse after a rough physical therapy session. I had hoped they would go away, but they don't." A tear darted down his face. "I-I can't play volleyball anymore [Y/N]." He was facing the wall now, face beginning to soak with his sorrow. You felt your chest tighten. This had been your fear from the beginning. He seemed to have taken the news that he couldn't play volleyball anymore a little too well. And now here it was, all crashing down. Suddenly, you didn't have any words that could comfort him, so you held him as he cried. All the emotion, frustration, disappointment, and pain flowing down his face. And you cried with him.
After what seemed like an eternity, he stopped. His breathing steadied and he began to relax. Voice rough from crying, he spoke. "Thank you for supporting me through all this. It must have been hard on you as well." You were stunned again. "I'm your partner, it's what I'm supposed to do. I love you and nothing could ever change that." He gave a small smile. You took a deep breath and continued. "As for playing volleyball, we'll figure it out together. This may door may have closed for you but I'm sure we'll be able to find another. I'll always be here to support you, and all we have to do is make it to tomorrow." "Tomorrow." He echoed. You ran your fingers through his hair and smiled. "We'll make it through this one tomorrow at a time."

length: 11k words
There was a new counselor at camp this year. His name was Joel, and no one knew much of anything about him. Most new counselors were freshly aged-out campers, or were dating a current counselor and got dragged along for the week. Joel was neither, and he’d been quiet and keeping to himself since he climbed out of his car and dumped his bags in Cabin 24 earlier that afternoon.
Avery found herself glancing over at Joel more than once while she caught up with some of her friends. He was hanging back from the clusters of other counselors, leaning against a tree and fucking around on his phone, though there was no way he was getting any reception all the way out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees. His baseball hat was on backwards, and his hair was sticking out in tufts from underneath it.
Avery’s co-counselor, Caroline, nudged her in the ribs and followed her gaze. “Think he’s cute?” she teased.
Avery scoffed, but she didn’t look away as some of the guy counselors pulled Joel into whatever dumb argument they were already having. “I’m not dealing with that shit this year,” she said. Every year without fail, there were camp crushes, and they never ended well.
“He’s in our age group,” Caroline told her, which Avery knew already. They’d all gotten the cabin assignments last week, and Avery had been wondering about the new guy since then. “You’ll get to know him, maybe change your mind,” Caroline said with a grin.
Avery rolled her eyes but didn’t get a chance to respond because the camp director was trying to get everyone’s attention so they could head up to the chapel for orientation. They went slowly, still chatting in groups and clusters, yelling out to each other as they made their way up the hill, past the dining hall and towards the chapel. Avery still found herself looking over at Joel as he ambled alongside the groups of counselors. He’s still quiet, though he’s obviously listening to the conversations around him, trying to catch up on years of history and inside jokes. He caught her eye as they duck through the double doors into the AC and sent her a grin.
Caroline might’ve been right about the cute thing.
The chapel on the campgrounds isn’t much of a chapel, and is more a big open room with some of the best wifi anywhere on the property. Somehow, Joel ended up sitting next to Avery in the circle of chairs set up in the middle of the room. He’d grabbed the orientation packet every counselor got and was flipping through it eagerly. Avery snorted softly, and she reached out with her foot to nudge Joel in the shin.
“Don’t worry, dude, it’s all common sense stuff,” she told him. Even the other new counselors, the ones who had just aged out of being campers, didn’t look concerned, though being at camp for a few years was definitely more than enough to know how to basically run the camp.
Joel looked up at her and grinned again. “Yeah, I’m getting that,” he said. “I don’t think I got your name earlier,” he added.
Avery was wearing a sticker with her name scrawled on it like everyone else, but she refrained from rolling her eyes. Barely. “It’s Avery,” she whispered as Austin, the camp director, stood in the middle of the circle.
“Who’s ready for some icebreakers?” he said, way too loud for the small space. Everyone groaned, and Caroline and Avery shared a look from across the circle. “Don’t be like that, we have some new faces, and it’s been a while since everyone’s seen each other,” Austin said.
By Avery’s count, Joel was the only counselor who was truly new, but there was no stopping Austin once he was in Camp Mode.
Two and a half hours later, after they’d painstakingly gone through every page of the counselor’s manual, they finally broke for dinner.
“Is it always like that?” Joel asked as they trooped back down the hill to the dining hall.
Caroline and Avery groaned again. Joel sent them an amused look.
“Every fucking year,” Avery told him.
“I think I have the manual memorized,” Caroline added.
Joel laughed. “Something to look forward to next year then,” he said.
Avery raised her eyebrows. “The kids haven’t even shown up yet. Don’t get ahead of yourself, you might change your mind before the week is over.”
He wouldn’t really, probably, but a week of yelling kids, walking several miles in the August heat, and shitty food definitely had the potential to drive the weak of heart away. It wouldn’t be the first time, and if they did scare Joel off, it wouldn’t be the last. Joel sat across from Caroline and Avery for dinner.
“Eat up, bud,” Avery told him, watching as Joel pushed food around on his plate. “This is the best food you’ll get all week.”
Camp food was notorious for being barely edible on a good day, but because the counselors got in for orientation on a day in-between camp sessions, the kitchen staff was able to make them an actual meal. It still wasn’t the greatest food, but at least it hadn’t been made in bulk and left to sit under heat lamps.
Joel sighed, but reached for the serving bowl next to him for seconds.
Campers arrived in two buses on Sunday afternoon, but first came breakfast and way too much downtime for the counselors. Austin always said it was good for “bonding,” even though most of the counselors had known each other since they were kids.
“How did you end up here anyway?” Avery asked Joel, who was sitting across the table from her again. He’d told her and Caroline at dinner the night before that he was from upstate New York, which was decidedly not anywhere near their little campground in the Midwest wilderness.
“Thought it would be fun,” Joel said around a mouthful of eggs.
Avery never did eat those powdered eggs they served that were a sorry excuse for fresh scrambled eggs. “Please don’t talk with your mouth full, gross,” she told him.
Joel just winked at her.
The counselors lounged around at the lakefront until it was time for the buses to start showing up. Avery caught Joel’s eye at one point in the chaos of unloading kids and their bags and directing them to the right cabins, and she laughed at the look of overwhelmed terror on his face.
The madness of the first day always made it pass quickly. Before Avery knew it, it was after dinner and everyone was trooping down to the fire ring for the opening night campfire. Avery watched as Joel’s campers clustered around him as they walked.
“Who is that?” one of her girls asked. Avery tore her eyes away.
“New counselor, Joel. He’s got our age group, I’m sure you’ll get to know him,” Avery told her. She just hoped they liked him once they got to know him.
Avery ended up sitting on a log with her campers, right behind Joel and the boys. She stared at the back of his hat while she zoned out, half-listening to the same welcome speech Austin gave every year. His backpack was unzipped.
Avery reached down and absently picked up one of the wood chips by her feet. She ran her thumb over it, still pretending to pay attention to whatever Austin was saying. One of her campers next to her caught on to her idea and snickered.
Avery tossed the wood chip in her hand into Joel’s backpack. It landed with a quiet clang as it hit a can of sunscreen, but Joel paid it no mind.
“How many before he notices, do you think?” she whispered.
“Only one way to find out,” Kate whispered back.
Avery picked up another wood chip. In the next five minutes before Austin called all the counselors down for introductions, she landed a little over a dozen more wood chips in his backpack, including one that bounced off of his back and in.
“Backpack’s unzipped,” she told him as she carefully stepped passed him, hitting the bottom of the backpack.
“Thanks, hey, what the f-“ Joel caught himself. He glared at Avery as he zipped up his backpack.
Avery laughed and went next to Caroline in the line of counselors.
It wasn’t a campfire without s’mores, and they broke out the marshmallows as the sun went down. The oldest campers were always in charge of the campfires and s’more assembly, so Avery was catching up with some of her former campers on the logs near the fire. Joel plopped down on the log next to her, one leg stretched out on either side, s’more in hand.
“Want one?” he asked, holding it in Avery’s face. His fingers were sticky with melted marshmallow.
Avery pushed his hand away. “Pass.”
Joel looked personally offended. “What kind of person doesn’t like s’mores?” he asked. Now he had melted chocolate on his upper lip. Avery was carefully not looking.
“This one,” she said. Joel reached out and tugged on her braid. “Ow, what the hell?”
“Just making sure you’re a person and not, like, a robot or something,” he said. Avery just rolled her eyes.
They found out the next morning that they were letting the boy cabins and girl cabins of the same age group sit together this year for meals. Somehow, it was actually less chaotic than if they were separated. Which is how, once again, Joel ended up across the table from Avery at breakfast. She had accepted her fate. He smiled at her, looking far too awake for so early in the morning.
“Hey! Beezer!” one of the boys yelled from the other end of the table. It sounded like Cameron, Avery thought.
“What?” Joel yelled back.
“Beezer?” Avery asked, because what the hell.
“Hang on.” Joel banged his knee on the table as he went to go talk to his boys.
“Beezer?” Avery repeated when he came back, still rubbing his knee.
“From my last name, Farabee,” he explained. “They said Joel is a weird name, so I said they could call me Bee or Beezer.”
“Yeah, because Beezer is so normal,” Avery muttered. Joel kicked her under the table.
It rained Monday afternoon. It was one of those late summer thunderstorms that blew up fast and didn’t really last very long, but it rained hard enough and long enough that all activities after lunch were cancelled. Which meant they were all trapped in their cabins with their campers.
Some of the girls were doing who-knows-what in their bunks, while most of the boys had elected to stay in their cabin with Sam. Joel had followed Avery and Caroline, though, and was now lounging in the common area with them and a handful of their campers.
“I’m bored,” Joel said. Thunder rumbled in the distance. Caroline threw a Goldfish at his head. “Ow,” he said, watching as it bounced to the floor. “Hey, I could’ve eaten that,” he whined. Caroline threw another Goldfish at him, but this time he caught it and popped it in his mouth triumphantly.
“Does anyone have a deck of cards?” Caroline asked.
“Spoons?” Avery asked, getting up to dig her cards out of her bag.
“I have markers!” one of their girls yelled, dashing off to her bunk.
Joel was sitting up again and looking more interested when Avery came back and sat back next to him. She tossed the deck to Caroline to shuffle.
His hat was crooked, and Avery absently straightened it as Joel asked, “How do you play spoons?"
Caroline gasped. “How have you never played spoons before?”
Joel shrugged as he watched the bag of markers get dumped over the table in front of him.
“It’s like musical chairs, but with cards and spoons,” Avery explained. “Alright, how many are playing?”
“That explains literally nothing,” Joel said. “I’m in.”
Avery carefully counted out six markers and laid them out on the table. Caroline started dealing cards to everyone. Joel poked Avery in the arm; she ignored him.
“You’re gonna get four cards,” Avery started explaining. “The goal is to get four of the same number, four queens, four sixes, whatever. Carol is dealer, she’ll keep sending cards around one at a time. If you see a card you want, keep it, and pick a different card from your hand and pass it on instead. First person to four of a kind grabs a marker, the person who can’t get a marker is out, and then there’s one less marker in the next round.”
Joel blinked at her a couple times. “I think I’m still confused.”
Avery laughed and patted him on the leg. “You’ll figure it out,” she told him, picking up her cards.
Joel did figure it out, but only after he was too slow in the scramble for a marker in the first round and got stuck watching for a while.
“I want back in,” he complained. He poked Avery in the back with his foot where she had moved to the floor in front of him. “You’re too fast.”
Avery reached behind her to smack his hand away. “Years of practice, bud. And you’ll get back in when this game’s over.”
Joel stuck his tongue out at Avery, but only Caroline saw it.
By the time the rain let up a little over an hour later, Avery had nearly elbowed a camper in the face fighting Joel for a marker (which she won), Joel threw a marker across the room so Caroline couldn’t get it (and was automatically disqualified), and no less than three fights had broken out.
Basically, they’d had a great time. They still kicked Joel out to go back and deal with his own campers for a while, though, on the grounds of infringing on their territory.
On Monday night, Avery was standing outside her cabin, trying to make sure her flashlight actually worked when Joel came over to her.
“What’re you up to?” he asked.
Avery clicked her flashlight off. “What’re you up to?” she countered.
“Stealing extra snacks from the staff cabin,” he said easily. “You didn’t answer me.”
Avery smiled at him. He was still wearing his baseball hat, turned around the right way now, even though it was well past dark. “I was gonna go for a walk around the campgrounds,” she told him. “Carol’s in with our kids, and I usually go out for a while before bed.”
“By yourself?”
Avery almost laughed at how worried Joel looked. “Bee, I know every inch of this campground, I’ve been coming here since I was a kid.” And then before she could think better of it: “You could come with me if you want.”
Joel’s face lit up. “For real?” Avery did laugh at his face this time.
“Yes, for real. Just let me get a hoodie.” It was still summer, but nights on the lake got chilly.
“Here, just take mine, I won’t need it,” Joel said quickly. He tossed her the hoodie he’d been wearing at dinner.
It was big on her, and warm, though it no longer carried any of his body heat. It smelled like bonfire smoke and whatever deodorant Joel wore. When he turned to head back to the main path, Avery tucked her nose into the collar and took a deep breath.
“Alright, where the fuck are we going,” Joel asked when Avery caught up to him.
Avery shrugged, though she wasn’t sure how well Joel could see it in the dark. She said, “I don’t know, we usually just wander around for a while.
“We?”
Avery usually went on night walks with one of the guy counselors she was friends with, Alex, but he wasn’t there this summer. “You don’t know him,” Avery said.
Joel huffed. “So what, am I just the other guy?” he asked.
Avery laughed. “Something like that. Ooh, there’s a paintball course on the back corner of the grounds, if I can remember how to get there,” she said, already turning so she could head in the right direction. Maybe.
“Oh, lit!”
Avery could not, in fact, remember how to get to the paintball course. They’d made it partially there before Joel got freaked out because he was convinced he’d heard something in the woods behind them. Avery telling him it was probably just a raccoon did not help.
So, they ended up turning around and heading towards the front end of the campgrounds. There was a vacation lodge on that side of the lake, which had never quite made sense to Avery. She could see some of their lights glistening on the black lake. It was a clear night, and there was no one else around, which meant stargazing. Well, after Avery convinced Joel they weren’t trespassing by laying on the tennis courts.
“Do you know anything about stars?” Joel asked. He didn’t look over at Avery, still gazing up at the sky.
Avery snorted softly. “Nah, I just think they’re pretty. You can’t see stars like this in the city.” There were still some lights scattered around the campgrounds, but it was nothing compared to the light pollution of a city. “Our old camp director used to tell us one of those myths about how the stars were created, but I don’t think I remember enough of it to repeat it.” He also used to scare the kids with ghost stories, but Joel didn’t really need to hear about how the campgrounds were haunted just yet.
“Great story,” he said. Avery smacked him on the stomach. “Ow! Hey, be nice to me, or I’ll leave you out here.”
He wouldn’t, and they both knew that.
“Hey,” Joel said suddenly, pointing straight upward. “Is that Orion?”
“Isn’t Orion a winter constellation?” Avery asked. She had no idea where Joel was pointing.
“What?”
“Never mind.”
They mostly laid in silence, just watching the stars and enjoying the closeness and the quiet. Avery always missed hearing the frogs at night when she wasn’t at camp. The black night sky stretched endlessly above them, dotted with stars. Avery would live under these stars if she could. It was getting late, though, and they still had to be up bright and early the next day, so when Avery caught Joel yawning for the third time in as many minutes, she sat up.
“Time for bed?” Joel pouted up at her. “I know the mattresses here aren’t comfortable, but I promise it’ll be better than sleeping on a tennis court,” she told him. It had only been one day of actual camp, and she could already feel some aches settling in. “C’mon, Beezer.”
Avery stood up and stretched before offering Joel a hand up. He groaned as she pulled him to his feet. They made their way back to the cabins together, still in comfortable silence, Avery still wearing Joel’s hoodie.
Joel was carefully peeling a banana when Avery and her campers made it into breakfast Tuesday morning. His hat was facing the right way for once. She dropped her backpack on the bench and groaned.
“What took you guys so long?” he asked. Almost all of the other cabins had made it to the dining hall already. He moved Avery’s bag onto the ground at his feet. “C’mon, sit, food’s coming out soon.”
“Ava lost one of her shoes, and we all had to look for it,” she told him. Joel snorted. Avery tapped the bill of his cap, shoved it down lower over his eyes. “No hats at meals,” she told him.
Joel rolled his eyes, but he took the hat off and ran his fingers through his hair. “Or what?”
“Or it goes on the moose,” Avery said, jerking her thumb over her shoulder at the taxidermied moose head that hung over the door.
Joel gave her a look, like he definitely didn’t believe her. He’d learn.
When Avery got back to the table from the bathroom before lunch later that day, there was a baseball hat hanging from the moose’s antlers. Joel was hatless and disgruntled-looking.
“Told you,” Avery said, swiping a potato chip from his plate.
She took pity on him later and fished his hat down with the broom handle.
Swim time down at the lakefront had always been Avery’s favorite parts of summer camp. In the middle of all of the craziness of the week, the lake was always peaceful and calm. Avery could take out a paddleboard or a kayak and just float, away from yelling kids, losing track of time in the glassy blue surface of the lake. She’d spend a whole day out there if they would let her.
She had snagged a paddleboard and had made it out to the middle of the lake. She was chatting with a couple of her campers when Joel approached on a kayak. “What’s up?” he asked.
“Hi, Beezer!” the girls in the canoe chorused. Avery grinned at him.
Sam came up on Avery’s other side on another paddleboard. He floated up until he bumped into Avery’s board. She wobbled, but didn’t fall over. “Oops,” Sam said.
Avery pushed Sam’s board away with her paddle. His balance wasn’t as good, and he toppled over. “Oops,” Avery echoed. Sam flipped her off where he thought the girls couldn’t see.
It was warm in the sun, and Avery leaned on her paddle, tilting her face up to the sun. Joel poked her leg with his kayak paddle. When Avery glanced back at him, his cheeks and nose were red from the sun.
“Are you wearing any sunscreen?” Avery asked him.
Joel shrugged. “Nah.”
Avery tsked at him. Sam had made it back up onto his paddleboard.
“Hey, Aves,” he said. “Water feels nice, you should try it.” He was holding his paddle a little like a spear.
They weren’t allowed to swim out in the open water of the lake where all the kayaks were, but they could get away with it if they “fell” in, which is how the counselors usually ended up spending most of their time on the lake trying to knock each other into the water. Avery knew where this was going.
Avery paddled backwards once, trying to get out of Sam’s reach, but she bumped into Joel’s kayak instead.
“Oh, no.”
Joel’s grin turned a little wicked. Avery didn’t have time to brace herself before Joel was shoving her paddleboard, and it went out from under her. She heard everyone laughing as she hit the water with a splash. She came back up, pushing her wet hair out of her face, and hooked her arms over her board. She glared at Joel.
“Rude,” she told him.
Joel shrugged. “Thought you looked hot,” he said.
The water did feel great, actually, though Avery was loath to admit it to either of the boys. Avery sighed and heaved herself back into her board, but she didn’t stand back up, instead sitting with her legs hanging in the water on either side. The girls in the canoe were still giggling, so Avery used her paddle to splash them.
“Hey, come on, they’re innocent!” Joel protested. Avery splashed him next.
Tuesday night meant all-camp kickball on the lower fields.
Avery had never been one for making a fool of herself in team sports, so she was lounging on a blanket in the grass with Caroline and a couple of the counselors for the older girls, safe from any stray flying kickballs. Avery was just debating digging through her backpack to reapply bug spray when Joel made his way over to them.
His hat was perched backwards on his head like always, and he was squinting into the setting sun as it dipped below the treeline. His forehead had gotten sunburnt from being out on the lake earlier. “We’re getting a counselors game goin’. You girls in?” he asked, but Avery had a feeling it was directed more at her than the other three.
She raised an eyebrow up at him and absently swatted at a mosquito on Caroline’s leg. “I don’t do sports,” she told him.
Joel’s face fell. Avery hadn’t even realized how earnest he’d looked. Someone on the other end of the field called his name, and he glanced over his shoulder. “You sure? It’ll be fun,” he tried.
Avery had grown up with most of the other counselors, knew firsthand just how competitive they all were. Fun, maybe, but also intense and way too serious for summer camp kickball.
“I’ll pass,” Avery said.
“Your loss,” Joel tossed back over his shoulder as he jogged away again.
Caroline was smirking. Avery half-heartedly smacked her on the arm. “He definitely has a crush on you,” she said.
“Does he think he’s being subtle?” Meg chimed in from the other side of the blanket, not looking up from the friendship bracelet she was making.
Avery flopped backwards onto the blanket with a groan.
Avery was still on her back, dozing off while listening to the sounds of yelling kids filling the humid air, when Caroline reached over and poked her in the ribs.
“Your boy is up to bat,” she said.
Meg snorted as Avery sat up and leaned back on her elbows to watch. “He’s not ‘my boy,’” Avery grumbled. Then, “Is it still called an at-bat in kickball?” She burst out laughing as Caroline rolled her eyes.
Joel was indeed up next, and Avery watched as Joel kicked the ball and sent it sailing over Drew and Sam’s heads. He easily headed to second base, but the grass was still wet from the rain on Monday, and he wiped out as he stepped on the rubber base. All four girls on the blanket burst out laughing. Joel was still sitting in the grass, looking somewhat disinclined to move.
“You really looked like you were having fun out there,” Avery said to him later, as they all walked back up to the cabins in the dark. “That wipeout was great entertainment for us, too.”
Joel took a step to the side so he could bump into Avery, but reached out to steady her when she lost her balance. “Whatever,” he said. “That really hurt, actually.”
Avery just laughed.
Joel showed up late to lunch on Wednesday with a giant bandage covering his knee and dried blood down his leg.
“What did you do to yourself?” Avery asked as he dropped into the empty spot next to her and reached for the nearest plate of food.
He still had ash streaked across his cheek from firebuilding that morning, when he’d bet Avery that he could build a fire faster than her. (He’d won, but only barely, and because he’d used a battery instead of flint, like they were supposed to.)
Joel didn’t pause in piling food on his plate. “Jackson left his water bottle down at archery, so I went back down to get it for him, and when I was running back up the hill, I slipped on some loose gravel and fell. I think there might be some gravel in my knee now,” he said. Some of the kids at the table laughed.
“You’re a mess,” Avery told him with a sigh.
They were back down the hill towards archery after lunch on Wednesday to hang out in the Nature Center for the afternoon.
“Alright, please fill me in on what we’re doing today,” Joel asked, falling into step next to Avery.
One of Joel’s campers turned around to walk backwards in front of them. “We get to play with snakes!” he said. His name was Jack, Avery was pretty sure, who was very different from Jackson. It all got a little confusing after a while.
“Cool!” Joel said.
Avery rolled her eyes. She poked Joel in the ribs. “You would get excited about that.” He flinched away and pouted at her. It wasn’t that Avery hated the Nature Center, but the animals were the same every year, and you can only get excited about them so many times.
“What? Snakes are cool,” Joel defended.
“Boys,” Avery sighed, walking faster so she could be next to Caroline instead.
Disdain in front of Joel aside, it was fun to get to chill in the AC and hang out with the animals for a while. There was a little milk snake that loved to chill out in people’s hands named Dudley that all the counselors were weirdly fond of. Plus, they got to play around with the ferret they had, which was always highly entertaining.
Joel was just as excited as the kids, which Avery had to admit was kind of cute. He bounced around and looked eagerly into various cages with the kids. Avery and Caroline watched from a couple of the chairs in the corner, content to just hang out until the snakes came out.
“D’you think I’d get in trouble if I put him in Joel’s hood?” Avery mused, idly watching Dudley calmly wind his way around her wrist. Joel’s back was to her, and he was wearing a hoodie despite it being nearly 100 degrees outside.
Caroline giggled. “That’s mean.”
Dudley was making his way back towards Avery’s hand now. “He did say he wanted to hold him,” she said. And with that, Avery took a step forward and carefully deposited Dudley in Joel’s hood, where he promptly curled back up to sleep.
“What are you doing?” Joel asked.
“Just fixing your hood,” Avery said innocently, patting him on the shoulder and taking another step forward and pretending to read the info card of the cage they were standing in front of.
“Avery.” Avery glanced over at Joel. His arms were crossed, but he looked like he was fighting back a smile. “Why is my hood moving.” It wasn’t phrased much like a question.
Avery bit back a smile of her own. “Is it?” Dudley’s head popped out of the hood just then, slithering up onto Joel’s shoulder a little bit. He startled, then shot Avery a dirty look. Avery couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’re actually the worst, why.” Dudley continued to make his way across Joel’s shoulder, happy to explore. “Help,” Joel whined, “I don’t think I can reach him, and I don’t wanna drop him.”
“Hold still,” she said, carefully reaching to grab Dudley back out. “Here, he likes to be held.”
Joel obediently held his hands out to take Dudley from Avery. “Hey, take my picture will you?”
Even if Avery never spoke to Joel again after this summer, she was definitely going to keep the picture she took of Joel grinning at the camera with a snake in his hands.
They were walking past the dam later when one of the boys stopped short. Joel, not paying any attention, bumped into him.
“Hey, Avery,” Jack said.
“Hey, Jack,” Avery said back.
“Can we go check out the cemetery?”
Avery shuddered. “Absolutely not.” She wondered who had told the boys about it.
Joel looked at Avery, wide-eyed. “There’s a cemetery here?”
“Yes, and we’re not going back there,” she told him. Several of the boys groaned, put-out. Joel still looked a little nervous, so Avery added, “These grounds used to be privately owned. The cemetery is hidden behind the dam, most people don’t even know about it.” That last part was directed more at their nosy campers.
They had started walking again. Up ahead, one of the campers yelled, “Wait, does that mean no one’s told Beezer that the campgrounds are haunted?”
“They’re what?”
Avery was not too proud to admit that she hated the barn dance a little bit. It was fun for a little while, but after about twenty minutes, it just became hot and dusty. Avery had never been good at following along with the steps they tried to teach, and it was a lot more fumbling and embarrassment than it was worth.
This year she made it through the Cha Cha Slide– which they normally didn’t play until the very end– before she dipped and left the barn to go sit back on the blanket with Meg and Caroline. They spent most of their time just laughing at their friends as they struggled to keep up with music. Avery had only been sitting out for ten minutes when Joel emerged from the crowd and made his way towards them.
“Scoot,” he said, carefully sitting next to Avery. Meg raised her eyebrows at Avery behind Joel’s back.
“Not one for dancing?” Avery asked him.
Joel stuck his tongue out at her. “You’re one to talk, you’ve been sitting over here forever.” Avery stuck her tongue out back.
“Real mature, you two,” Caroline muttered from next to them.
“Hey, wait, actually,” Joel said, reaching out to tug on Avery’s arm. He pulled her closer to him, until she was situated between his legs, leaning back against his chest. He draped his arms across her shoulders and rested his chin on the top of Avery’s head. “That’s better.”
“You’re so weird,” Avery said, but she relaxed into his hold. She rested her hands on his and settled back in to watch the semi-organized chaos of the barn dance going on in front of them.
Thursday morning found Joel hunched over a Styrofoam cup of coffee with his glasses on and hoodie pulled up over his head.
“I didn’t know you wore glasses,” Avery said, sitting across from him and swiping his coffee for a sip.
“Hey,” Joel whined, “I need that.”
Avery snorted and handed him his coffee back. “Why are you so tired, anyway?” Avery had gone back to the cabin after barn dance and passed out herself.
Joel made a noise in the back of his throat. “We couldn’t get the boys to shut up and settle down last night.” Said boys were at the other end of the table, looking about as tired as Joel, actually.
“Y’all better wake up down there,” Avery called. “We’ve got Alpine today.” “What the hell is the Alpine Tower, anyway?” Joel asked. “No one will tell me.”
The Alpine Tower was hard to describe, and it was better to experience for the first time if you didn’t know what you were getting into, so Avery just said, “You’ll see.”
Joel groaned and put his head down on the table.
After breakfast, Joel was by Avery’s side, as was becoming typical, as they started the trek towards Alpine Tower. He’d woken up considerably as his coffee hit. “How far is it anyway?” he asked.
“Far,” everyone else chorused. Joel looked taken aback.
“You should know by now that nothing here is ever a short walk,” Avery told him. The shortest walk on the grounds was probably from the cabins to the dining hall, and that was still almost half a mile. Ahead of them, a group of their campers were chattering excitedly about their climbs later.
Joel reached out and tugged on Avery’s braid where it was pulled over her shoulder. “You should give me a piggyback ride.” Avery raised an eyebrow at him. Joel easily had a head on her. “Or you could give me one,” she countered, not really expecting Joel to take her up on it.
Except. “Only if you carry my backpack,” Joel said, already shrugging off his backpack and handing it to Avery.
She laughed. “Bud, I was joking.”
Joel adjusted his hat and came to a stop next to Avery. He was eyeing her expectantly. “Last chance.”
Avery sighed and put Joel’s backpack on over hers. “Jesus Christ, what do you have in this thing?” she asked. It was heavier than hers by a lot. Joel crouched down so Avery could climb onto his back.
“Wood chips,” Joel deadpanned as he adjusted Avery on his back, hiking her up a little higher. Avery tightened her arms around Joel’s neck.
“You’re ridiculous,” she muttered, but Joel didn’t respond as he started walking again, jogging a little to catch up with Caroline and the kids.
Caroline gave them both a look as they reached the rest of their group, but didn’t comment. Joel carried Avery for most of the long walk towards Alpine, and it was mostly fine, except for the moment he stopped to hike her legs up higher around his waist again and nearly accidentally flipped Avery over his head.
He came to a stop as they reached the first big hill. “Nope, ride’s over. Sorry, sweetheart, I don’t do hills.” He let Avery slide off his back and back onto the ground.
“Sweetheart?”
Joel blushed a little and wouldn’t meet Avery’s eyes. Avery purposely bumped into him as they both started walking again. Joel was panting by the time they made it to the top of the second steep hill, but he stopped short once he saw the Alpine Tower for the first time.
“Oh, hell no,” he said.
Avery laughed and went to drop down in the wood chips on the ground next to Caroline.
“What took you two so long?” she asked.
“Joel’s slow,” Avery told her.
“I heard that!” Joel called. He was only a few feet away, sitting on the low bench next to one of his campers.
“You were meant to!” Avery called back.
The Alpine Tower had once been described to Avery as “a rock wall on steroids.” What it really was was a triangular platform fifty feet in the air, and it was up to the climber to figure out how to get to the top. Each of the three sides were varying degrees of difficulty, and it was always one of Avery’s favorite camp activities. When she glanced over her shoulder, Joel was still staring up at it.
“Scared, Beezer?” she asked.
Joel scoffed, but he didn’t quite look like he meant it.
They made it through the safety demonstration and got a couple kids going up the Tower, and Avery settled in to watch, cheer her kids on, and wait for her turn. Until someone started pelting her with wood chips from behind.
“Can I help you?” she asked, turning around to glare at Joel.
He was already in the middle of throwing another wood chip at her, and it hit her in the forehead this time. “Oops.” He didn’t look particularly sorry, actually. “You gonna climb?” he asked.
“Yeah, of course,” she said. “Are you?” Joel just shrugged. “Wouldn’t have pegged you to be scared of heights,” she added.
Joel stuck his tongue out at her. “I’m not. Just-” he trailed off.
“How ‘bout this,” Avery said, turning fully to face Joel. “I’ll race you to the top. I’ll even let you take the easy side,” she told him. She’d been planning on taking one of the harder sides, anyway, but Joel didn’t need to know that. Joel rolled his eyes, but Avery saw a familiar glint at the prospect of a competition. “Unless you’re too scared, Bee,” she added, just a taunt, really.
“Whatever, you’re on,” he said, half-heartedly throwing another wood chip at Avery’s leg. Avery grinned at him, and Joel grinned back. Caroline shook her head at both of them.
After all the kids had taken their turn at climbing, the counselors were allowed to strap themselves into harnesses and helmets. Avery and Joel stood next to each other in the shadow of the Tower, listening as they were attached to ropes and given final instructions by the climbing staff.
“Fuck, this thing is tight,” Joel muttered, shifting uncomfortably.
“Shh, language,” Avery scolded. Their campers were all in high school, and they’d probably all heard or said “fuck” themselves by now, but still. Joel flicked her in the helmet. “Hey, be nice to me, and I might let you win.”
Joel huffed. “Let me win, sure, alright.”
“Good luck, Bee,” Avery yelled to him, already heading over to start her climb.
She was on the “middle” side, which was harder than the side Joel was starting on, but Avery had the advantage of having climbed that side more than once before. It didn’t take long before she had caught back up to Joel, who had sort of gotten himself stuck.
“Help?” he called, trying to look for a way to keep moving forward.
“Sucks to suck, Beezer,” Avery called back, reaching up to pull the cargo net she was about to climb towards her. This is where it got harder, requiring more upper body strength than Avery actually had, but when she glanced back over her shoulder, Joel had gotten himself unstuck and was moving again.
She stopped paying attention to Joel mostly after that, though she did hear a thump and then an “Ow,” that she was assuming was Joel hitting his head on something, which would definitely not have been the first time someone had done it.
She was about to climb her last stretch of cargo net when she heard, “Shit, why are you so good at this?” from below her. “Quit checking out my ass, Joel,” she yelled without turning around. She cackled when she heard Joel make loud noises of protest. It didn’t really matter; she had a race to win.
In the end, Avery barely made it to the top of the Tower before Joel. She had just stood up on the platform when one of Joel’s hands appeared, grappling for the little rock climbing rocks they had for grip on the top of the platform.
“A little help?” he asked. She could just barely see his head.
“You made it this far, you can do it,” she told him, but she took a couple steps closer to him. It was entirely ungraceful, but Joel eventually scrambled onto the platform and then to his feet.
Avery took a moment to appreciate the view. They were high, above the treeline, and trees stretched out in all directions for as far as Avery could see.
“Fuck, we’re high up,” he said.
“Stop saying fuck,” Avery chided, but she offered him a high five. “Told ya you could do it.”
“Have I told you that I hate you?” Joel asked, shaking his head. He took the high five, though. “Wait, how do we get down again?”
Alpine Tower took up most of the morning, and by the time they all made it back to the dining hall, lunch was already in full swing. Joel stretched out on the bench with a sigh.
“How am I already sore?” he asked, to no one in particular.
Avery nudged his leg. “Move over, dude, the rest of us have to sit, too.”
Joel groaned, but sat up, though he was still sitting sideways on the bench. He leaned forward and rested his forehead on Avery’s shoulder. She patted him absently on the thigh. One of the campers was setting out lunch on their table, and she was trying to see what it was.
“I’m tired,” Joel said. He was quiet for once, and Avery barely heard him over the general din of lunch.
“You can take a nap instead of coming out to the mud cave, meet up with us again for swim time,” she said, knowing full well he wouldn’t do that. He’d been talking about the mud cave ever since Avery had told him about it on Sunday night.
Joel sat upright again. “No way, I wanna get dirty.”
Avery groaned. “Please never say that again.” Joel wiggled his eyebrows at her. She knocked his baseball hat off his head.
The two cabins met back in the circle drive outside the dining hall after lunch, dressed in their dingiest clothes and oldest shoes, ready to pile into the old van that took them out to the edge of the campgrounds. For once, Joel wasn’t wearing a baseball hat. He couldn’t stand still, bouncing around while he chattered with his boys while they waited.
The van pulled up, as rickety and rusty as ever, helmets were handed out, and everyone clambered into the van. There wasn’t a lot of space, and it was hot as the van made its slow way across camp.
“Why is everyone wearing their helmets already?” Joel asked, as the van hit a bump in the road and Joel bounced high enough in his seat to hit his head on the roof. “Ow, okay.”
Eventually the van came to a stop at the creek that cut across the overgrown field they were in. Everyone piled out of the van, blinking in the sunlight.
“So, where’s the cave?” Joel asked. A couple people laughed.
“Across the creek, through the field, and then about another mile into the woods,” Avery told him, patting him on the shoulder as she went past him towards the creek. The campers had already started wading across. When she glanced back over her shoulder at him, he looked a little dismayed.
The creek was clear and cold despite the late summer heat. It came up just past Avery’s waist as she splashed across. The field on the other side was just as overgrown as the one they started in, if not more, and everyone tried to get through it and away from all the bees as fast as possible.
“Is it really that far of a walk?” Joel asked as he caught back up to Avery. His nose had gotten sunburnt at some point, was peeling a little.
“Unfortunately,” Avery said. They were walking back into the shade of the woods now. Avery’s shoes were still squishing a little from the creek, and she could already feel a blister forming on her heel.
Joel groaned, but he was otherwise quiet as they kept walking. They walked in silence for a while, and Avery basked in the sunlight filtering through the trees and the sounds of the birds and cicadas.
“How much farther?” Joel whined after a while. Avery bumped sideways into him.
“We’re almost through the week, don’t tell me you can’t handle a little walking now,” she teased.
Joel bumped into Avery back. “Sorry, one of us walked all the way up to Alpine Tower today,” he said.
“Hey, I walked up the hills at the end!” Avery protested. It wasn’t like she had begged Joel for a piggyback ride, either. Joel rolled his eyes at her.
They had finally reached the cave, and everyone was clustered around the permanent member of the camp staff who would lead their group. The kids were listening eagerly, but Joel was paying attention to literally anything else.
Avery nudged him with her elbow. “Focus, Beezer,” she whispered.
Joel stuck his tongue out at Avery, but started paying attention to where their leader was warning them about bats. “Hang on, you never said anything about bats,” Joel hissed. In front of them, the kids were lining up to head into the cave. Avery just grinned at him and shoved him forward to walk in front of her.
It was immediately cooler when they stepped into the cave. With all the rain on Monday, the water was higher than some years, and it was quickly up over Avery’s shins. In front of her, Joel clicked his flashlight on, but it did little as they made their way deeper into the blackness of the cave.
“Shit, this water’s freezing,” Joel said, way too loudly.
Avery laughed quietly. She felt her shoe unstick from the mud as she took another step. “I don’t know what you expected,” she whispered. It was hard to navigate the uneven footing in the dark and the water, and she tripped a little bit as the ground sloped suddenly beneath her. She caught herself with a hand on Joel’s back. “Shit, sorry,” she said.
Joel didn’t say anything, but he slowed down a bit so Avery could stay closer to him and his little circle of light. He kept a hand outstretched behind him in case Avery tripped again. It was quiet in the cave, just the sounds of everyone making their way through the muddy water and the occasional quiet giggle or curse from the campers. Avery lost track of time a bit, and before she knew it they had reached the back of the cave. All flashlights were turned off, and they stood quietly in the pitch black for a few long moments. Joel was standing close enough to Avery that she could feel his body heat, chasing away some of the chill of the cave. When they finally turned to leave and headed back out of the cave, Joel’s hand found the small of her back, steadying her, just for a second.
At the mouth of the cave, their leader insisted on streaking mud across everyone’s face before they could leave. Joel wrinkled his nose and poked at his cheek as they stepped back out into the sunlight. “Feels weird,” he complained.
“The mud is what you have a problem with?” Avery asked. Yeah, it itched a little as it was drying, but they were also covered in muddy water, well past both of their knees.
Joel just shrugged.
The walk back to the creek always seemed longer. It was still hot and humid, even in the shade of the woods, but it felt worse after spending almost an hour in freezing water and the damp dark of the cave. Everyone walked slower, dragging their soggy feet.
Joel ended up in the creek ahead of Avery. The kids were splashing around, relishing in the clean water.
“Hey, Bee,” Avery called.
Joel turned towards her, but Avery missed a drop-off of the rocks that made up the creek bed, and stumbled. Joel caught her quickly before she face-planted into the water.
“Careful,” he said, grinning down at her. “No need to throw yourself at me,” he added.
Avery rolled her eyes. She had found her footing, but Joel was still clutching her arms. She pushed at his chest and laughed as his heel slipped and he fell backwards. He disappeared under the water for a moment.
“Oh, you’re gonna pay for that,” he said when he reappeared.
Avery tried to dash away, but the water came up over her waist, which made it hard to move quickly. She splashed as much as she could, but she felt Joel grab her around the waist and haul her backwards until they were both falling back underwater. Avery shrieked. Joel let go of her after they both went under, and Avery pushed herself away and stood back up. They were both soaked now. Joel was laughing, and Avery couldn’t help but to laugh, too.
“Alright, you two,” Caroline yelled from the shore. “Quit flirting and get out of the creek.”
They both grumbled about it, but they made it to the other side of the creek without further incident.
Back into the van everyone went. It felt less hot with everyone still chilled from the cave and playing in the creek. Joel slid in next to Avery, pressed up against her side. They were stopping off at the lakefront swim next instead of going back to their cabins, and Avery was looking forward to spending more time out in the sun on the lake. Joel nudged her in the ribs with his elbow, drawing her attention away from where she was staring out the window.
“You goin’ out on the lake?” he asked quietly. The van jolted, and he ended up nearly in Avery’s lap for a moment.
“Of course,” Avery said back.
“Wanna grab a canoe together and chill?”
Avery thought for a moment. “Not interested in trying to knock me off a paddle board some more?” she teased.
Joel shook his head, grinning at Avery. His helmet was off, and his hair was a mess from being underneath it. “Too tired,” he said.
“Lame,” Avery said. Then, “Dibs on the front of the canoe.”
It didn’t take long to change out of their drenched and muddy clothes into swimsuits and commandeer a canoe. Joel got stuck doing most of the steering, with Avery only paddling when necessary. They mostly just drifted, letting the breeze push them along the open water. The lake was steel grey, the sky above them dark with clouds that had rolled in while they were in the cave, threatening more rain. Avery sat back and let her fingers brush across the water.
“Hey,” Joel said. His voice echoed a little, carrying across the lake. “Look at me for a sec.”
Avery turned as much as she could without jostling the canoe. Joel had his phone out, and when she turned, Avery heard the artificial shutter sound as Joel snapped a picture of her. She flipped him off with a grin; he took a picture of that, too.
The dining hall seemed extra loud that night, campers running back and forth between tables, everyone desperate for a few extra minutes with their friends before everyone went their separate ways the next day.
“You’ve got a little-” Joel poked the dried mud Avery still had across her cheekbones, sitting next to her at their table.
She swatted his hand away. “Shut up, I didn’t have time to shower after swim.” Joel slid down the bench, away from Avery. “Okay, rude,” she said. Joel grinned at her. He didn’t move any closer.
After dinner was the closing campfire. They were at the big fire ring this time, down near the lakefront as the sun set. Joel found Avery sitting on one of the benches off to the side of the fire by herself and plopped down on the bench next to her. His backpack made a muffled thump when he dropped it in the wood chips at their feet.
Avery dropped her head to rest on Joel’s shoulder. “I’m tired, Bee,” she whined. As much as she loved camp, it usually kicked her ass by the end of the week.
Joel laughed softly and patted Avery on the thigh. “Last day tomorrow,” he reminded her.
Avery stared into the flickering flames until her eyes went unfocused. “But I don’t wanna go home.”
She didn’t want to leave camp, her happy place, didn’t want to leave Joel, who she was maybe falling in love with, didn’t want to leave her friends and the endless days of summer behind.
Joel laughed again, but it wasn’t mean. “I get that.” The kids were starting in on their s’mores. “I wasn’t sure how much I was gonna like it here, honestly. Especially when I got here and everyone else already knew each other, and I was just the new guy.”
Avery lifted her head and looked at Joel. The firelight was casting shadows across his face, but he was gazing out over the lake. His hand was still on Avery’s leg, just above her knee.
“Did you like it after all?” Avery asked. She thought about him talking about next year on the very first day, saying he thought camp would be fun.
Joel grinned then, and it was familiar and comforting. Avery hadn’t expected that to happen at the beginning of the week.
She found herself wanting to see Joel’s smile forever.
“Yeah, I did,” was all Joel said. Avery put her head back on his shoulder.
They were quiet for a few minutes as the sun sank fully below the treeline and the lake glowed red next to them. Avery shivered in spite of the warm air as a wind blew. Joel bumped her head with his shoulder so Avery sat back up, and then he was bending over to dig something out of his backpack. He dropped a hoodie in Avery’s lap. She hadn’t seen him wearing it ever during the evening, which meant he’d thrown it in his bag just for her. She pulled it on with a small smile.
“You might not get this back, bud,” she told him, tugging the sleeves over her hands. Guys’ hoodies always seemed more comfortable than any sweatshirt Avery had ever owned herself.
Joel just shook his head at her and tugged on her braid, but it was gentle, half-hearted.
“Oh, wait, I’ll be right back,” Joel said, jumping back up and disappearing towards the s’mores table. When he came back a few minutes later, he had a s’more in one hand.
“What, nothing for me?” Avery teased.
“No, because you don’t like chocolate, you freak,” Joel said, but he reached into his shorts pocket and triumphantly produced an unopened sleeve of graham crackers, tossing them to Avery. She squinted suspiciously at him as he sat back down. “Carol told me you’ll eat the graham crackers,” he said casually.
Avery opened the crackers carefully and stuck one in her mouth. “Thanks, Bee,” she said around it. It came out softer than she meant for it to.
Joel winked at her and stole a graham cracker.
Every year, there were rumours of campers planning to sneak out of their cabins on the last night of camp. Really, they were terrible at being discreet about it, but they thought they were being subtle. Regardless, the counselors still had to be careful and watch to make sure no one actually did manage to sneak out.
Which is how Avery and Joel ended up sitting out in front of the stars at the small fire ring in front of their cabins, perched on the cold stone wall with both of their cabins in view. Avery was still wearing Joel’s hoodie.
“Do you think they’ll actually do it?” Joel asked, breaking the comfortable silence.
Avery shook her head and tilted her chin to look up at the stars. “Probably not, but I’m not about to get in trouble with Austin if they do.” It had happened once while she was still a camper, and it hadn’t exactly been pretty the next day with an entire cabin in trouble.
It had been cloudy earlier in the day, but it had cleared up, and the stars were as bright as ever above them. The moon was low and yellow in the humid air. Avery wished for a second that she had a camera to capture this moment, a memory to last forever.
Joel mimicked Avery, looking up at the stars. “Bright tonight,” he said. Avery hummed in agreement. “Hey, you know what we should do after the kids fall asleep?” he asked suddenly.
Avery raised an eyebrow at him. “Sleep?”
Joel huffed out a quiet laugh. “I wanna check out that cemetery you guys were talking about,” Joel said.
“At night?” Avery said. “Hell no, it’s creepy enough during the daytime,” she told him.
She’d been back there once before, years ago. There were broken headstones scattered throughout the overgrown grass, and it was shaded by the dam and a dozen trees, making it cooler, even in the heat of summer. It felt like it was a world away from the rest of the camp, quiet and eerie, and Avery had zero plans of ever going back there.
Joel rolled his eyes. “You know what else we could do?” He turned so he was facing Avery.
She tilted her head to look at him. He was smiling softly at her. It was a little scary how quickly he’d become a part of Avery’s life, how she went from knowing nothing about him to trusting that he’d always be by her side.
“I don’t know, Joel, what could we do?” Avery whispered.
Joel’s smile grew, and then he was leaning in. Avery’s eyes closed as their lips met. Joel’s hand was wrapped around one of Avery’s wrists, thumb rubbing absently over the skin there. When he pulled away, he was still smiling. They were sitting closer together than they had been, though Avery wasn’t sure which one of them had moved.
“I’ve been wanting to do that all week,” Joel admitted.
“Well, why didn’t you?” Avery asked, and then she was wrapping a hand around the back of his neck to pull him in for another kiss. She could feel Joel smiling into the kiss, even as he tugged her closer.
Distantly, Avery heard a cabin door open. She pulled away to turn and look, and Joel dropped his head to her shoulder. Avery ran her fingers through his hair at the nape of his neck. Caroline was walking towards them.
“I was going to tell you that the kids are asleep and you two can come back inside, but you seem pretty busy,” she said once she got closer.
They both flipped her off, and she laughed at them as she turned and headed back into the girls’ cabin. Avery shivered in spite of herself then. Joel rubbed his free hand over Avery’s thigh, a little bit for warmth, and a little bit just to touch her, because he could do that now.
“Last day tomorrow,” Joel murmured. Avery leaned closer.
“Don’t wanna talk about that,” she said. She looked back up at the stars, hoping that they would have some answers, for how she was feeling, for how she was going to go back to a normal life after this.
Joel used a finger to pull Avery’s chin towards him again, to press one last kiss to her lips. He used the hand on her wrist to pull her to her feet.
“Better get to bed,” he said, and it sounded a little wistful.
As much as she didn’t want to leave Joel, Avery was cold, and her ass hurt from sitting on the concrete wall for so long. “Walk me to my door?” she asked. The cabin was only a couple hundred feet away, but she was going to hold onto every last moment. Joel held his arm out for her to loop hers through. “Don’t want to get attacked by a raccoon or something,” she added.
Joel ducked his head and stole one last kiss when he dropped her off, Avery’s hand already on the doorknob.
“See you tomorrow,” she whispered to his retreating back.
The last day of camp was always weird. The buses didn’t come to pick up the campers until after lunch, which left several weird hours of downtime to kill in between cabin cleanout and the time everyone actually left camp. Even with everyone still lingering and saying their goodbyes, with the cabins standing empty, camp had an eerie and melancholy feel.
Cleaning out the cabins was always a mad scramble of kids hunting down their belongings and cleaning up week-old messes. They only had half an hour after breakfast before they had to be out of the cabins, and there was never enough time.
“How does someone always lose a towel?” Avery asked Caroline. “How do you not realize you don’t have your swim towel?”
Joel had sat next to Avery at breakfast, like usual, but they hadn’t talked about the night before, or what was going to happen in the future. Avery was trying her best not to think about it. Which is to say, it was all she could think about.
Caroline waved her hand in front of Avery’s face, jarring her back to the present. “What’s going on in that head of yours?” she asked.
“Joel,” Avery admitted.
Caroline smirked. “I can’t believe it took you two that long to get your shit together. Thought for sure you’d be hooking up after the first night.”
Avery shoved at Caroline’s arm until she fell off the path and stepped into the grass, cackling. “Why am I friends with you.” Caroline stepped back on the sidewalk. “I don’t know what we’re gonna do. Summer camp is a whole different world from everything else.”
“I think you’re overthinking this,” Caroline told her. Ahead of them, Joel was helping one of the younger boys carry his heavy bag. Avery sighed.
“I don’t even think he lives around here,” Avery said, remembering when Joel had told them he was from New York. She had never thought to ask how exactly he’d come across their little camp, how he’d ended up in the Midwest.
Caroline shoved her back. “You know how you could find all that out?” she asked. “Talk to him.”
They had caught up to Joel. “Who are we talking to?” he asked, shooting Avery a knowing look.
They lost him in the chaos of trying to organize all the kids’ luggage into the proper bus piles, but he cornered Avery in the basement of the dining hall as she was about the head back upstairs.
“Hi,” she said. He was wearing his hat the right way around for once. Avery reached up and flipped it backwards, so she could pull him down for a quick kiss. Joel’s hand was warm on her waist.
“What was that for?” Joel asked, but he ducked down to steal another kiss. “Heard we needed to talk about something,” he went on, without waiting for Avery to respond. She poked him in the stomach, got him to back off from where he was caging her in against a wall.
“How does this work?” Avery asked. Joel had taken a step back, but he stayed close, close enough that Avery could see the way his eyebrows furrowed when she spoke.
“What do you mean?”
“Camp doesn’t last forever, Joel,” Avery said.
“So what, this has to end?” Joel asked.
Avery took another step away from Joel. “I don’t know, does it?” she snapped. “What even is ‘this,’ anyway?”
Joel stepped closer and took Avery’s hand. “I don’t know, but I know that I like you, and that I want to find out,” he said.
Avery looked up at Joel. The look in his eyes was earnest, genuine. She felt the fight drain out of her. “How do we do that?” she murmured.
“We’ll figure it out as we go, yeah?”
Avery smiled. “Yeah.”
When they made it back upstairs, Caroline was shuffling a deck of cards, and there was a pile of spoons stolen from the kitchen in the middle of the table. Joel was still holding tightly to Avery’s hand as they walked. A couple campers made room for them at the table, and his hand rested on her thigh instead. Avery leaned into his side.
“Deal us in,” she said.

Part three to Home
Suna x fem reader
Atsumu x fem reader
Tags: still angst, light fluff, just a lot of Suna simping.
AN// let me know if you want me to continue the story.
Part Two: Silence
Part Four: Chance Encounters
Tumblr media
You were the most beautiful girl Suna had ever seen. When he saw you that first day of school it was like the clouds in his normally dreary day parted and he could feel the sun. You weren’t in the same class much to his dismay. That didn’t stop the middle blocker from searching for your face in the crowds of the halls or the cafeteria. Though it was rare he stilled catch some glimpses. In those moments a war waged in his mind part of him wanted to go introduce himself, he wanted to know your name. To just be around you. But another side of his brain forbid that. Stating that he was fine were he was he would just interrupt your day. What would he even say to you. Hi I’m Suna I’ve been watching you since the first and even though I know next to nothing about you I can’t get you out of my head..... yeah no. He’d just sit back and wait for opportunity to knock. Suna curses himself for his laziness. He can’t describe how his heart stop the day his friend brought you to practice and introduce you as his girlfriend.
Though he kept his composure he felt as though the air was stolen from his lungs. This is the closesest he had ever to been to you and it was overwhelming to say the least. You stood there at Atsumu’s side smiling and greeting the team memebers and when your attention drew to Suna he realized his favorite thing about you was your eyes. You beautiful (e/c) eyes shown with so much light and happiness. When you smiled you smiled with your eyes, always getting this cute little crinkle. He shook his head at these feelings. You were taken and by one of his friends no less.
From that moment on you presence was always close by joining the boys for lunch or stopping by practice with little snacks you had made the team. Suna almost resents how easy he gets along with you. How simple it is to fall into a banter with you. He hates how calming it is when you’d sit next to him and laugh as you showed him some meme. He wanted to be annoyed with you ever time you’d put your foot down and insist he let you wrap his finger after a bad block. But he couldn’t you were just such a caring person. He’d try and give you some petty insults, maybe if he caused a rift between the two of you he’d feel better, maybe then if there was more space between you he’d feel less guilty for always being enraptured by you. But you’d always snap back with something just as clever or petty. You could go toe to toe in trading insults but both of you knew neither of you meant it. You’d always break out into that breathtaking smile after a few rounds of back and forth. He realized soon that he’d much rather keep you in his life as a friend even if he could never have you because at least he’d still see that smile. At least as your best friend he’d still see your eyes shine bright and he could take a small pleasure in knowing he brought some of that happiness.
Tumblr media
“You need to calm down,” Suna turned to see Osamu taking the seat on the bench next to him.
Suna's hands run through his hair gripping the roots in frustration as he let out a yell.
“How the fuck am I supposed to be calm, she could be hurt or missing, and that ass is just sitting there! Two weeks! Lord knows what could have happened by now.” Hes shaking part of him wants to go back up and give Atsumu a few more licks but he knows no good will come from it.
“YN is a grown woman and she’s smart and strong and you know damn well she’d bitch you out right now for thinking she couldn’t handle herself,” the former ace chuckled.
“I’d much rather her here bitching cause at least then she’d be here,” he groaned rubbing his hand down his legs trying to let out some of his nerves. “Did you know?” He asked the grey haired twin.
Samu gave his quick glare of offense. “Absolutely not believe me if I’d known I would have been the one to deck him , you just beat me to it.”
“The last i heard from her was her birthday, maybe if I’d had stopped by and brought the Onigiri myself I could have been there for her,” he sighs.
“We’ll find her don’t worry,” his friend pats his back, “and then you can finally confess,”he smiles.
“I’m that obvious huh,” he sighed.
Samu let a loud laugh “ OH PLEASE we all knew, well maybe not YN she can be kinda blind ya’know,”
Suna shook his head laughing. He has to see you.
Tumblr media
They returned home today from nationals. The loss to Karasuno was really starting to sink in now that was Suna was home sitting in his room alone the house quiet. He laid there berating himself for balls he failed to block. If I had just done better maybe my team would still be playing. Maybe - he was disrupted from his thoughts by the chime of the door bell. His parents were out of town this weekend. They had assumed like many Inarizaki would still be out in Tokyo fighting for first place. It was fine though Suna was used to being alone. But that just confused him more as he made his way to the door. Who could possibly be here. All he can say is he’d never except to open the door and see you standing there. Like always you stole his breath away.
“What yer not gunna let me in,” you teased “and to think I brought you snacks!” He just realized now she was carrying a grocery bag that looked pretty heavy.
“Give me that ya Dummy,” he said taking away the snacks, he stepped to the side allowing her entry.
“I figured you were hungry, but try to save me some,” she giggled. Suna just rolled his eyes as she took a seat on his couch.
“What are you doing here?” He questioned taking his seat beside her making sure to leave a respectable distance. Though he wants nothing more than to hold you close. He dismisses the thought as he rummages threw the goodies waiting for your response. He smiles seeing the package of milk bread you bought. He took it out and tossed it to you knowing it was your favorite. You smile and give a slight nod as a thank you.
“I figured you wouldn’t want to be alone after the game, I know your probably thinking a whole bunch of nonsense right now aren’t ya?” She looked at him with a solem but knowing look. He cursed how well you knew him. Seeing as he had been doing just that before your arrival. His heart squeezed at the thought of you wanting to comfort him. It almost gives him a slight hope. What about Atsumu, he lost that game too.
“Why aren’t you with you boyfriend, he’s probably taking it harder than me,” he asks knowing he might ruin this little fantasy he has here with you. He sees a sad look cross your face at the mention of the setter. It’s not a look Suna wants to keep seeing.
“You’re right about that, Tsmu’s having a tough go of it,” she gave a soft smile. “But he said he didn’t want my pity and asked I leave,” Suna could see your eyes get a little glassy thinking back to the conversation.
“He’s an Ass.” The middle blocker states plainly.
“He’s just got a lot of emotions right now and wants his space, it’s okay.” But Suna can see your hurt. He knows it wont do any good to keep talking about it.
“His loss, now I get all of the snacks,” pulling out a bag of chips. “Want to watch a movie?”
That’s how the evening went the both of you curled up on the couch Suna had brought down some pillows and blankets and he wouldn’t lie he loved seeing you wrapped in his comforter. You went on and on about this anime you started and you nearly died when he agreed to let you show it to him, pumping your fist in the air going off about your favorite character and how he’s totally going to love him. Suna looks over at you and your wearing the biggest smile eyes wide with joy. This is will always be his favorite moment he thinks.
Tumblr media
He’s right that moment still sticks out in his mind. He has plenty of great memories but that one right there is his favorite. He’s been thinking back on a lot of his memories of you lately.
It’s been seven months since your birthday and no one in your former circle new anything about where you were. You hadn’t talked to anyone. Your number was no longer in service and all of you socials have gone silent.
After a couple of days of looking for you Suna was ready to go to the Police and report you missing, ready to call every hospital and pray you are safe. At this point that’s all that matters to him. He can’t bare to think about anything bad happening to you but it’s hard to keep his mind out of the dark place. Osamu was the one to stop him. Luckily they had gotten in touch with their former captain and while Kita was sorry to hear about the situation and very disappointed in his junior for his actions. Every one was upset with Atsumu for his actions. Kita was gladly willing to help in the search. Still being in their home town he was able to pay your parents a quick visit. And while he was happy he could inform them both that your parents had heard from you the other day so your fine. That was all your parents could tell him, stating that you had requested to keep your privacy not wanting to talk to anyone. So while they knew the biggest detail they still knew nothing.
It hurt Suna the most. How could you just cut him off like that. You were the most important person to him how could you not know that. He fretted. He knows your hurting but why did you have to cut all of them off most importantly him. Part of him was so incredibly angry how could you not even say goodbye to him. Did his friendship really mean that little to you. But another part of him understood that he couldn’t possibly know what you are going through. All he knew is how much he missed your smiling eyes. He would give everything to see you again.

MIDNIGHT SKY
I have three important warnings about the AU oneshot.
The first is that this story is a little different from what I have already written. What does that mean? It means that the story will have dirty jokes, (1) detailed french kiss and alcohol. And sexual tension. Yes. An ace trying to write UST. Ah! They are 18 here.
The second is, of course, language. There is nothing more explicit than what I have written in other stories. It's just that it's hard for me to write stories without cursing like a sailor. Sorry.
The third is that I didn’t tag anyone in this story for the reasons above. I didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
The two songs featured in the story are (in order of appearance): Gone by Charli XCX and Midnight Sky by Miley Cyrus.
9.6K (the story is under "read more")
Maribat by @ozmav
In that au, Alya and Marinette dated for a year at the Collège, but when they joined Lycée and Lila arrived, they broke up because Lila managed to convince Alya that Marinette was cheating on her.
Lila's obsession with Adrien in the canon is replaced by Marinette, that is, instead of Adrien, Marinette is Lila's target here.
Since Lila never lied about being friends with Ladybug, Mari never suspected the girl.
So, Lila comments to Alya that it was very strange Marinette's constant disappearances and how the girl made up weak excuses about it
Alya is hard to convince at first, but with Lila's time and persuasive words, she ends up giving in and believing in Lila.
Alya accuses Mari, Mari denies it, but it's no use.
They break up.
Everyone starts to exclude Marinette, supporting Alya who is heartbroken because she still loved Mari.
Except Adrien, who is a good friend for the designer.
So, while everyone was focused on Alya, Lila approaches Marinette and Adrien in the image of a concerned and supportive friend.
She offers a shoulder for Marinette to cry, and friendship to Adrien.
This is, of course, hidden from everyone.
Lila uses Adrien and Marinette for personal gain. Knowing that Adrien was too innocent and Marinette too kind.
Marinette falls in love with the Italian and with Adrien's encouragement, she confesses.
They start dating and Lila loves that Marinette kisses the floor she steps on
This is all hidden from the class.
Lila gives the excuse that she didn’t assumed her sexuality to anyone and that she is not ready yet
Mari and Adrien are quick and comfort the Italian, telling her that she doesn't have to force herself into anything. That they loved her.
Months go by, Kagami arrives at Dupont stealing Chloe's heart and befriending Adrien
Eventually she joins the pair (adrien and marinette) bringing Chloe and Sabrina together, who apologize to Marinette
They start to hang out together as friends and Mari is happy.
This makes Lila angry, since adrinette are no longer isolated and available to her all the time.
Lila accuses Mari of not having more time for her and not loving her anymore, trying to make the girl feel guilty
Mari fearing that the same thing that happened with Alya, happens with Lila, starts to isolate herself from her friends, giving her full attention to Lila
Kagami and Chloe notices Marinette's behavior and how sad the girl looked
Marinette can't take it, and tells the four friends what had happened and that sends red lights to Kagami who starts watching Lila closely.
That’s until Chloe and Sabrina find a mistake in one of Lila’s lies and tell the fencer
And so, Kagami investigates and uncovers all Lila's lies
Including why Alya broke up with Marinette and she tells Marinette
Marinette doesn't believe in Kagami and fights with her friend, because Lila would never do that to her
So, Mari starts to avoid Kagami and Chloe and Lila celebrate with the victory
Lila warns Kagami to stay away from Marinette, because Mari was hers, thinking that the Japanese girl was interested in Mari
Kagami becomes Onii-chan, exposing Lila to Chat Noir and Ladybug
Marinette again has her heart broken and she cries on her friends' shoulders after asking for forgiveness for not believing.
She breaks up with Lila the next day when Lila is alone without the class present.
Lila tries to make the girl change her mind, blame Marinette's friends, emotional manipulation, but it's no use and Mari leaves without looking back
Lila has an outbreak of anger, but surprisingly, no butterfly appears
She tries to win Marinette back throughout the week, but the girl pretends not to see her and the group of friends was also quick to repel the Italian.
Kagami being the most brutal
With that, Lila takes personal revenge and begins to lie about Marinette and her friends
About them bullying her and harassing her.
Everyone believes in the girl and the group of friends become the outcasts of the class
Even though Lila made their lives hell, she still believed that Marinette would come back to her
The same for Alya, who still liked the girl, but treated her badly for revenge.
That is, until Lycée's graduation party takes place.
▫▪▪
The fact is: Marinette was happy.
For a while she thought it would be impossible to be happy. When you discover that the two people you loved with all your heart were two fake ones, it’s kind of makes you think that you are actually the problem.
And for a while she thought just that.
When Alya, instead of asking her to talk privately to try to understand what was going on, decided that the best time to yell at her was in the middle of the courtyard with all the students watching the show; her thoughts were that she might deserve it.
It had been humiliating, yes. She never felt so much embarrassment and hurt as she did that time. But being honest, Marinette knew that something like that could happen, since she couldn't tell her secret to Alya. It wasn't much of a shock.
She tried to convince Alya, denied it, did what she could. In the end she gave up and ran home to lick her wounds, putting on her big girl mask.
It was really a surprise that there wasn't even a butterfly. For her or Alya. No sign of akuma for an entire week.
Or later, when she found out that the girl she loved, the same one she loved the floor she stepped on, was all the time lying to her and that it was Alya's cause to break up with her.
And that in the end she became a villain almost bigger than Hawkmoth in Marinette's life; leaving her isolated, almost without friends; making up lies or accusing her of things she hadn't done. Lila tried, and in a way, managed to ruin Marinette.
She thought this was her destiny: failed and illusory relationships. No sincere and passionate romance. Kisses that wouldn't make her blood boil or her heart race. Nothing that made her weak and wobbly legs.
Marinette had broken up with Lila just six months after they started dating. She was about to turn sixteen. Alya broke up with Marinette after a year of dating, she was fifteen.
Maybe it was a curse, she thought. Since she was lucky enough to have been chosen to be a hero; loving and concerned parents; wonderful friends (all four); talent recognized by powerful people (Audrey and Gabriel).
In the same way as Ladybug and Chat Noir, if she had one side too good, the other would have to be as bad as to balance the scale.
What Tikki had firmly denied and said that Marinette just needed to be patient, that the right person for her would show up. She just needed to mature and wait for it.
Marinette tried to be positive about the words of the little goddess. Really. She really tried.
So, when she turned sixteen and Adrien announced that he and Luka were in a relationship, Marinette celebrated for her friends. She was genuinely happy for them. But when Sabrina, not even a month later, appeared hand in hand with Felix, both with red cheeks and babbling about deciding to try a relationship; Marinette broke.
She broke down and gave up.
Seeing how Chloe changed when she was with Kagami or how Felix was opening up more and more because of Sabrina, showed Marinette that she hadn't been enough for Lila. Or Alya. She was the problem.
Then she stopped.
Marinette began to focus more on studies, friends, commissions, training as a guardian and life as a hero. Not looking once for romantic relationships. And she was like that. Increasingly strong and independent, not once bowing her head to other people.
For her seventeenth birthday, Luka - who had discovered he was Jagged's son and was now living with the man - invited family and friends to celebrate at the rockstar's mansion in Gotham. Trying to keep the group away from Paris and Akumas for a while. Everyone agreed, since it was a good idea.
(Gabriel who was leaving for a business trip in New York and allowed Adrien to go with them, like a long-delayed vacation.)
And it was there that Marinette met Damian. Tall, arrogant, beautiful green eyes, olive skin, broad shoulders, defined muscles, dark hair like the night and a permanent frown as a causal expression. She felt like air was being stolen from her lungs.
The second time they kissed - the first being just a brush of lips - Damian held her tightly. His fingers sinking into the flesh of her hips, the palm leaving feverish impressions on her skin, the fullness of his cologne soaking her senses, the sharp drag of his tongue against the roof of her mouth, pulling the tiniest delightful sighs from her lungs.
Marinette had been lost in Damian. She dragged her hands through his smooth, combed hair, as if she were drugged with passion. Her nails scraping over the bare skin on the back of his neck, never wanting to let go. The sounds that escaped, Damian swallowed fervently, looking just as drunk as she did.
Marinette was weak, wobbly, her blood was like lava, her heart was beating as if it wanted to break her ribs, she was short of breath and her brain was like goo.
It was there that she gave herself over to love once again.
They returned to Paris, Luka staying in Gotham, but promising video calls and visiting when he was off tour with Jagged; Adrien was sad, but he was also the musician's greatest enthusiast.
For Marinette, leaving Gotham and, consequently, Damian, had been painful. The chaotic, disgusting thoughts about how the relationship had been only a 'summer love', but in the end it was him who insisted on continuing. Then the same promise that Luka had made to Adrien, Damian made to Marinette.
Returning to Paris was fine, but returning to Dupont had been disappointing. Somehow, Ms. Bustier's class came to believe that Chloe, Adrien, Marinette and Sabrina had been absent for a week, just to get attention and as a result, the verbal attacks became more violent. Alya and Lila being the two most aggressive.
Aurore, a few days after the group's return to Paris, had told Marinette that Alya let slip that she was dating Nino just to hurt her. As revenge for being 'unfaithful', so that Marinette would regret having deceived her.
Marinette was really sad for Nino, as he seemed to really like Alya.
Thus, a year passed in the blink of an eye and in two days, there would be the graduation party for all classes of graduates.
The first idea - coming from the teachers - was that the party would be in the American style of prom. Beautiful dresses, king and queen and all that bullshit, but all the students who were graduating refused. They wanted something different.
Hawkmoth and Mayura had been defeated, they were all graduating, all of them of age wanting to leave the lycée in style. And Chloe - as always - at the meeting with all the class representatives, offered the Moulin Rouge as a graduation party.
Everyone loved it. Well, almost everyone, since the teachers thought that a graduation party at a nightclub would be overkill; but with all the students excited about the idea and the fact that they were of age, the school allowed it.
It was three months of organization. Selling tickets to non-students, buying drinks - alcoholic and non-alcoholic -, food - since no one would be able to stand all night without eating -, talking to the club's employees, making the guest list. It was exhausting, but it only increased general anxiety.
"What do you think, bug?" Chloe was wearing a yellow sequin bodycon dress with spaghetti straps and four-inch silver strappy high heels. "Kardashian or Paris?"
Marinette chewed the strawberry in her mouth. One side of the earphone to the ear, the phone in one hand on a video call with Damian and with the other hand, she wagged her finger, asking Chloe to turn.
"Hmm, I think it would be better to choose something that you won't have to fix up every time you move around a lot." The brunette considered after Chloe turned to her again. "We are going to a nightclub to drink and dance, so I think a bodycon is not the best idea."
Chloe pouted, looking at the back of the outfit in the mirror. “But that dress makes my butt so round. 'Gami would love it.”
Marinette looked at the phone in time to see Damian raise an eyebrow at the subject, an amused gleam in his eyes. "For sure, but choose something that you will be able to dance with me because I intend to leave that club without feeling my legs."
She was biting into another strawberry when Chloe put her hands on her hips, still looking at herself in the mirror. “Watch out, bug. You spend a lot of time without feeling your legs, an hour can become dangerous.”
Marinette frowned without understanding, but the wink that Chloe sent and Damian's laughter took the confusion out of her.
"Chloe!" She took the pillow closest to her on the bed and threw it at her friend. "No sexual jokes." The blonde was laughing as she returned to the closet, easily avoiding the pillow.
"Because actions speak more than words." Damian had a small mischievous smile on his face. "And I'm a man of action."
“Oh? We'll see." Marinette threw the second and last piece of the strawberry into her mouth, chewing it slowly as she stared at the camera. "I'm looking forward to your actions, baobei."
▫▪▪
While Marinette was eager to leave the lycée and forget her classmates for good, she was also feeling salty about everything. About how Lila would get away with it, go on with life as if she hadn't fucked Marinette's entire lycée life.
On the one hand, she wanted to unmask Lila so that everyone could see how rotten the Italian was. On the other hand, she no longer cared what others thought of her, much less wanted to help them get rid of Lila's slimy claws.
There were more cons than pros and she didn't know what to do.
"Marinette, why don't you let your hair down?" Tikki flew to the girl.
"I don't know, Tikki." She took the mascara, wiping it on her lashes. "My hair is too big and I'm going to sweat." Marinette turned her face away from the mirror, studying the makeup.
She had decided to dare that night. After spending years with just mascara and gloss, Marinette had smeared black eyeshadow on her upper and lower eyelids, a little highlighter above the pink cheekbones and a pink nude lipstick.
The makeup had become a spectacle, giving it a mature look.
"Just take a ribbon to attach." The little kwami pouted and Marinette rolled her eyes affectionately. "And it will also match your outfit."
"Okay, okay. Let me fix this mane, then."
Marinette thought about wearing one of the many evening dresses she had designed before, however, considering the same advice she had given Chloe, she choose something safer.
Skinny jeans with subtle rips in thighs and knees, lace crop top with spaghetti straps and sweetheart neckline, her loyal Louboutin daf platform ankle boots. All black except for the Chanel red – synthetic – leather jacket that Damian had given her as a gift.
She opted for different jewelry this time. Tikki and the earrings would stay with Sabine, and a small, discreet pink gold earring in the shape of a ladybug took place. On the neck, the choker that matched the earrings adorned the delicate skin, as well as the ring on the finger.
"There." Marinette announced. The hair was in uneven curls, giving volume. "What do you think?" She opened her arms for Tikki to take a closer look at the choice of clothes.
She had adopted the sexy and dangerous look with praise.
"You look wonderful, Marinette!" The kwami squeaked excitedly. "Damian will love it!"
Marinette smiled excitedly. "Do you really think?!"
"She's right, my love. You look stunning.”
The two jumps in surprise at the new voice and Marinette turned in time to see Damian enter her room. Tikki soon became scarce.
"Dames!" She quickly approached her boyfriend, happiness on her expression. “When did you arrive? I didn't get late, did I?”
Damian was quick to wrap his arms around her waist, pressing the smaller body against him. There was an evil smile on his face. "I just arrived and I missed my girlfriend a lot, so I decided to show up early."
Marinette wrapped her arms around his hunched shoulders, her fingers sinking into the short hair on the back of his neck. "Good, because your girlfriend was really missing you too."
"And what does she intend to do about it?" Damian dragged his hands under the leather jacket, letting his hands roam over the bare skin on her back.
Her eyes darkened with the touch and the proximity of their faces. They hadn't seen each other for a few months since Damian had been busy joining Tim in charge of WE and that took a toll on both of them.
The hunger for touch - Damian's touch - for Marinette had become unbearably difficult to control without him around to relieve. But now he was there, so close that every slight movement of their heads resulted in their noses rubbing against each other.
And she wanted more, much more. Damian didn't seem averse to that, if the warm look was any indication.
"What do you want-" He didn't give her the chance to finish her thought, his lips firm against hers in a passionate kiss.
And Marinette gave herself up again, as anxious as she was, to get lost in their own little world. She wanted it so, so much. It was disturbing how lost in Damian she was.
"I didn't want to disturb the love birds, but they are all waiting in the limo." The two of them reluctantly moved away.
Both were panting, Damian's lips red and damp with lipstick marks on his skin, his hair ruffled by Marinette's fingers; she was no different, lipstick had smeared the skin around her mouth, her lips were red and her eyes were blurry.
Adrien had been the one to interrupt the two, still standing on the stairs and leaning on the bedroom floor as if watching a very interesting movie. He had a mischievous smile on his face.
Damian sighed, regaining consciousness, frowning at being interrupted.
"Sometimes you are a pain in the ass, Agreste." He grunted as he helped Marinette adjust her clothes.
"And you still love me." Adrien showed his tongue in retaliation. “Don't forget to clean that lipstick stain. You know that if Jason and Tim see it, they won't be talking about anything for a week.”
“Thank you, Adrien. We will be leaving soon!” Marinette replied before Damian said something rude and dragged her boyfriend over so she could wipe his face with makeup remover.
The model took no more time in the room and went down.
"I think it's best not to apply lipstick again." Damian leaned against the dresser, arms crossed over his chest, watching Marinette fix her smudged makeup.
Her hand faltered over the lipstick tubes with his comment, rethinking the options, and decided to pick a strawberry chapstick.
"I don't think you're going to care about the artificial strawberry taste, are you?" She winked at Damian boldly and took a second look at what he was wearing.
"Not at all. Now let's go, before Chloe comes for us.” And he pulled her into the hatch on the floor.
The girl was so distracted by his presence that she hadn't even paid attention to what he was wearing. And she approved the choice of the set.
Damian wore a gray v-neck t-shirt folded inside his black slim fit pants - without a belt -; over the shirt, a graphite blazer folded below the elbows to show the inner print of the piece; polished black shoes on the feet.
And she thought seeing him in a three-piece suit was surprising.
They left the house without much fanfare. Sabine and Tom sitting on the couch with Tikki and Plagg watching some old movie on TV just waved their hands, telling them to have fun and call if they needed anything.
Chloe's limo was parked right next to the bakery exit. Luka leaning against the open door, talking to Félix and Jason.
Félix had - surprisingly - left his ties and waistcoats in the closet this time. Wearing a rare gray polo shirt, regular cut black jeans with leather belt and on his feet, Gucci loafers. Only the hairstyle remained the same, as he and Damian were two people who breathed hair gel.
Jason hadn't changed much. All in black, regular pants looking well-worn on his knees, combat boots, Henley with open buttons and a leather jacket. Hair looking much wilder than on a normal day.
Luka, on the other hand, wore almost the same as Jason. The differences were that Luka did not have a leather jacket, his shirt was a white button down and was wrapped around his forearms and his pants were leather. But that was not what caught Marinette's attention about her friend.
It was the first time she had seen Luka in person in months (almost a year) and she learned from Adrien, that he had adopted a new haircut and that he had gotten some tattoos. But she didn't think he would have both arms full with complex designs and colors.
His hair was short on the sides and nape, the natural tone left untouched in the shaved parts. With longer top totally dyed blue. She was able to see that there were more piercings in the ears, a dark ring on the nose and a black plug in each ear.
"Hey, guys! Sorry we are late." Marinette smiled at their friends who had stopped talking to look at them.
"Good night, Mari."
"Bugnette, what's up!"
"Ma-Marinette, your music is still fantastic."
"Luka, you're total rock 'n roll! Jagged must be proud.” She commented.
"I liked the Red Hood style, Bugnette." Jason pointed out the similarities.
"It would be interesting to see Red Hood kicking ass on a six-inch platform heel." Felix looked at Jason, considering.
"There is an image that I would rather not have in my head." Damian groaned as if in pain.
Jason opened his mouth to probably swear at his friends and brother, but was interrupted by Chloe, who came out of the limo snorting in irritation.
“Can you guys get in soon? I want to make a dramatic entrance and you are getting in the way!”
“Wow, Chlo. You are wonderful." Marinette ignored her friend's angry snort, preferring to look at the clothes the girl was wearing.
"Of course. I am always wonderful.” Posing with hands on hips.
Chloe's outfit was not the most outrageous outfit she had ever worn before. They were simple pieces, but together they made a fatal set.
She wore a black satin top with spaghetti straps, folded into a white high-waisted mini shorts, on the legs, four-inch black over the knee boots - Tom Ford's lace-up nappa she loved - and on the neck there were two chokers: the broadest was white with black print and the thinest was leather decorated with crystals; plus a gold necklace with bee pendant.
Her hair was in a messy ponytail and her makeup was simple; black eyeliner, shadow on the eyelids was a sparkling metallic - yet soft - there was a lovely pink on the cheekbones and her lipstick was nude.
"I'm getting more and more excited about it all." Marinette murmured, an evil smile on her face.
Chloe winked at her friend, having the same thoughts as her. "Come on suckers!"

When they arrived at the club street, there was a considerable line at the entrance for people who had bought tickets; but as Sabrina, Adrien, Chloe, Marinette and Kagami were students, they were entitled to VIP entrance and could take two guests each.
"That's a lot people." Adrien commented sitting next to Luka and Chloe.
He wore an oversized pastel pink button-down shirt; the last three buttons open with the left end folded into the slim fit light blue denim pants. On the feet, off-white converse with white socks.
The hair, which he had let it grow - not too long, just long enough for a little ponytail - was parted on the side and messy, two kitten clips holding the right side of the bangs, while the left side fell textured over the eye.
"I see Nath and Marc from your class coming." Kagami lays a finger on the window, showing the two boys to enter.
She wore a pleated red peplum off-shoulder knit top, black leather pants with golden zippers on both sides; and on the feet, six-inch silver gold peep toe platform high heels.
Her hair, now in a pixie cut, had her bangs pushed aside. The makeup, she just had a thick black eyeliner on her eyes, ruby lipstick on her lips and minimal blush. Accessories include a pair of diamond earrings.
"Aurore and Claude too." Sabrina replied. That night, she had left her glasses at home, opting for contact lenses.
Sabrina opted for a black backless bodysuit with spaghetti straps, a pleated two-tiered skirt with the first being gold sequin and the second layer was peach tulle. On the feet, five-inch black lace up bandage high heels.
Red hair in a French bob, with loose curls and messy bangs. A silver necklace with a fox pendant around her neck. The makeup the same as Kagami's, changing only the color of the lipstick, which was a wine purple.
"Everyone has arrived." Jason says, his eyes glued to the phone.
"Everyone?" Marinette asks, eyebrow raised.
"Yeah..." He looks up, feeling the sharp edge.
"Everyone who?" Damian asked, already knowing the answer to that question.
"You know..." Jason looks away before speaking again. “Artemis, Dick, Kori, Tim, Conner, Cass, Steph, Babs, Duke and Jon. Bruce and Selina didn't come because Helena cried every time they put her in the crib.”
Damian grunted and Marinette laughed, incredulous. Luka and Adrien were out of breath from laughing.
"My god, the entire Wayne family under one roof..." Félix gasped in horror.
"If Paris remains whole tomorrow, I will ask my father to declare a holiday." Chloe joked.
"Okay, I think we better get in soon because this is getting weird here." Marinette opened the limo door and let out a breath.
It was now or never.
▫▪▪
Lila was ready. This was the last chance she would have to mess with Marinette, before everyone followed the path of adulthood with colleges and jobs.
Was she a little obsessive? Yes. She would not deny it. But there was something about Marinette. Something that she couldn't name, that made her waste hours of the day thinking about her; feeling angry that the girl broke up with her and never looked twice at Lila again.
She simply pretended that the Italian did not exist, regardless of the lie that Lila told or accused her, Marinette did not even blink in her direction and that left her burning with frustration, a bitter taste in her mouth.
When Marinette broke up with her, the first thing she thought was that it was Alya's doing, but she soon gave up on the idea since Alya was her most loyal follower and didn't know about Lila and Marinette's relationship.
But she knew that Marinette would not have found it out on her own, that she had help and that the person who had done it would pay. It was only when she noticed Kagami's murderous looks that everything fell into place and she tried.
Lila tried so hard to ruin Kagami Tsurugi's life. At school, at home, with the girl's fencing partners. Everything. But somehow Kagami was untouchable.
So, she went around, attacking Chloe with gossip around the school, accusing Marinette of bullying, telling everyone that Adrien was gay, throwing suggestions to Sabrina's stupid father; everything she could do she did and in a way, she got some results, but nothing significant.
Not even when Lila talked – lied - about lovers or high society ex-lovers like Damian Wayne, Peter Stark, Princess Shuri to make the girl jealous, Marinette reacted.
It was frustrating. Marinette getting further and further away from her control, the days and months passing, the anger rising. But she had everything ready for that night.
Lila would recover what was hers for better or for worse.
Nino choked on his drink and coughed violently, drawing her attention.
"You're right, man?!" Kim asked worriedly as he hit the DJ on the back.
The whole class was sitting in a discreet corner of the club that filled up more with each passing minute, so the boy was soon surrounded by concerned colleagues.
Lila tried not to roll her eyes in annoyance.
Nino inhaled the air trying to compose himself, his outstretched arm pointing to a somewhere in the club. "Ma-MA"
Alya frowned in confusion before following the direction with her eyes, where Nino pointed. The reaction she had was almost identical to Nino.
"MARINETTE?!" She screamed; the club's music drowning out, but the class was able to hear without a problem as they were close.
Lila felt a sharp pain and burning in the back of her neck from the speed that she turned her head, but it didn't matter. With ‘Marinette, Marinette, Marinette’ singing in her mind, she rested her eyes on the sight of the gods.
There she was. Sin itself. Lila felt her mouth dry, feeling deeply dehydrated.
She had other people with her, but the Italian had eyes only for Marinette. For the way the pants hugged the curves like a glove, the contrast of red and black against the alabaster skin, the sudden ability to walk in heels.
The loose hair that she never showed anyone, just for Lila, but now everyone was seeing.
"Wow, Marinette looks beautiful." Alix sighed.
"I didn't know Sabrina could look like this..." Max commented back.
"Chloe looks beautiful, too." Kim's cheeks were flushed.
"... Mari..." Alya said again, her eyes glassy, unaware of Nino's grimace.
Lila felt her anger burn again.
Everyone was looking at Marinette. Everyone was coveting what was hers.
She swallowed the rest of the gin violently before placing the glass on the table and walked to the dance floor.
Tonight, Marinette would look at her, only at her.
▫▪▪
Meeting Damian's family on the sofas in the VIP area of the Moulin Rouge had been quite a scene, since the group of heroes - and vigilantes - attracted a lot of attention, even though they were doing nothing but talking and drinking.
Artemis and Kori, two tall and strong women, wearing simple clothes: Kori with a black lace trimmed silk satin mini dress accompanied by black shorts, and on her feet, four-inch open toe pump noir from Visage; Artemis, on the other hand, was more comfortable with blue ripped skinny jeans, a transparent black button-down blouse - a lace bralette underneath - and on the feet, Jeffrey Campbell's four-inch rodillo-hi wedge sandal.
Babs was also tall, but not quite as tall as the other two. She was wearing a scribbled multicolored Jeremy Scott mini dress and red YSL stilettos opyum 110 on her feet. Cass was the most casual, all in black wearing a black t-shirt with sleeves wrapped around her shoulders, denim and converse Chuck Taylor.
Steph was wearing a black Prada technical nylon jumpsuit with black Oxford heels and Marinette was never so proud.
She succeeded in just a year, making them understand that jeans and hoodies were not the solution for everything. Only Cass who was still fighting her, but Marinette was nothing but persistent. She was going to make it.
From the boys, there was not much difference from the ones she had seen before. All between Félix and Luka. Which was disappointing, honestly.
They were all sitting, talking and drinking, Jon had disappeared with Mirelle in the middle of the dance floor and Tim had gone to the bathroom when Adrien jumped off Luka's lap.
"I love this song!" He shouted excitedly. "We have to go!" He took Marinette and Chloe's hand, pulling both without thinking twice.
Chloe laughed excitedly, turning quickly just to wave goodbye to Kagami and Marinette blew a kiss to Damian who leaned back against the couch, relaxing to watch the girl.
They had to push some people out of the way to get a good space, but soon they were dancing.
‘Why do we keep when the water runs? Why do we love if we're so mistaken?’ Adrien sang for both of them, arms up as he moved his hips.
‘Why do we leave when the chase is done? Don't search me in here, I'm already gone, baby’ Chloe sings back shaking her head while tossing her ponytail over her shoulder.
‘Why do we keep when the water runs? Why do we love?’ Marinette shrugged to take off her jacket and do a slow body roll. The sharp and sensual hips.
She looked over her shoulder, catching Damian's eye across the dance floor. He smiled; his eyes dark. Tim catches the change and laughs hard. Damian looks at his brother, his expression irritated.
Marinette dances again with her friends, putting her jacket back on her shoulders, getting lost in the music. Feeling the melody vibrate under the skin. Dancing was really wonderful.
The three of them stayed on the dance floor for what seemed like hours. Jumping, singing or just playing with each other. At one point, Sabrina joined them, but she didn't stay long.
Adrien was flushed from the effort; Chloe had a wet neck and Marinette was scalding in that leather jacket. That's when they decided to stop and go back to their table.
Chloe and Adrien were quick to sit on the plush seats, leaving only Damian's lap free for her to sit on, which she didn't hesitate to do.
"Hey, big boy." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "You come here often?"
Damian hugged her waist. "No, but if you want, I can come." He kissed her neck, his arm stretched out on the table to pick up the water bottle. "But first you have to drink water and take that jacket off to cool off."
She made a face, but didn't complained when she took off her jacket - which Damian threw on the table - and took the water from his hand. She managed to drain the bottle without having to stop to breathe, the thirst she hadn't noticed, calmed.
“Water has never tasted as good as it does today. Wow." She sighed in delight.
"I know something much better." Damian whispered in her ear and lowered his head to place a kiss on the back of her neck, enjoying the goosebumps.
"D-"
"If you guys stop flirting for a moment and pay attention to me, I would appreciate it." Adrien caught their attention.
"Agreste." Damian growled as he pulled his mouth away from her skin. “This is the second time today. Second."
Luka laughed at his friend, blinking slowly. “Easy Wayne. He just wanted Marinette to see that.” He pointed discreetly at the dance floor.
Dance floor where Alya and Lila danced against each other, trying to sensualize. Trying was the key word, since Lila didn't seem to know what she was doing. But the worst was not them trying to sensualize, but trying and, on top of that, looking at Marinette waiting for a reaction.
"Do they really think this is going to work?" Sabrina asked really surprised.
"I wish I could unsee it. Jesus." Felix grunted.
"They can be worse than Tim." Dick stifled his laughter in Kori's dress and she stroked his hair.
"It's like a live trainwreck." Kagami had a glass of whiskey in her hand, trying to hide her laughter.
"This is disturbing." Jason raised his eyebrow at Alya twerking. "Very disturbing." He was sitting on Artemis's lap, his eyes barely open, almost asleep.
"I should sue them for this." Chloe was extremely irritated.
"Think on the bright side: at least they haven't started-" Damian raised his eyebrow, before rolling his eyes. "Forget what I was going to say."
"They really are- oh my god." Marinette put her hands on her face in disbelief.
Lila and Alya were kissing. Kissing in a very obscene way, if Marinette could add.
"Guys, this is worse than I expected." Cassandra commented without emotion. A beer in her right hand and her left arm on Stephanie's shoulders.
Marinette was not really believing the general situation of what was happening. Of course, she imagined that Lila would try some of her irritating plans to humiliate her in front of everyone, but she didn't think that Lila would be allying herself with Alya in such a rude way.
For God’s sake! Alya had a boyfriend and even though she didn't really like Nino, she should at least respect him. Nino was not a bad guy, perhaps too innocent for falling for the lies of the two girls, but he was still kind and fun. Quite honest.
Seeing Alya simply dismissing his feelings as if it was nothing, made Marinette disgusted.
If she still liked either girl, that would be the moment when the feeling would end.
"I feel so bad for her boyfriend." Steph said pointing to a dark corner on the other side of the club, where Nino looked devastated.
Marinette felt her anger burn at the sight.
She had arrived at the club determined to do nothing against Lila or Alya, but that changed when she saw Nino looking so heartbroken.
Those two would pay for thinking only of themselves.
Marinette turned to her friends, the miraculous team, with a stormy expression. “Bee, Cat and Fox-” Chloe, Adrien and Sabrina straightened up, their eyes hardening. "I have a plan and I think you will like it." She smiled like the devil, the three showing equal smiles.
"What about me, Mari-hime?" Kagami asked, eager to help.
"You and everyone are going to sit here and watch."
Damian squeezed her waist, reaching for her ear again.
"I love it when you look like this. Ready to bite heads off."
Marinette turned her face only to place an innocent kiss on his lips, before moving away to Damian's ear.
"Then you will love even more what I am about to do." And she bit the lobe of his ear, pausing only to appreciate the way his fingers dug into the bare skin of her waist, before getting up.
"Now if you guys excuse us, we have a show to do."
▫▪▪
Lila was about to open her mouth again to deepen the kiss with Alya, when the music was abruptly cut off and everyone started booing.
"Sorry! Sorry!" The DJ - Allan from Mr. Dubois' class - said into the microphone. "I know you want to keep dancing, but a very peculiar request came and I thought you would love it."
She looked at the spot where Marinette had been sitting - sitting on the lap of a man Lila had never seen before - but did not find the girl. Only Tsurugi and Couffaine were still sitting there with the strange friends. None of Marinette's other three minions were there.
The man who had been with Marinette before noticed Lila's gaze and raised an eyebrow in defiance and she had to look away back to the DJ booth.
"What do you think of a live show?" Allan asked, getting excited by the enthusiasm of the audience. "Great, great- because I have four friends here who want the high point of the night!"
Lila had a really bad feeling about what was about to happen.
He turned back, waving to the people in the back and when they reached the light, Lila's heart dropped to her stomach.
Marinette, Chloe, Sabrina and Adrien were smiling like a cat that ate the canary while waving to everyone.
"You must recognize them: Adrien Agreste, Sabrina Raincomprix, Chloe Bourgeois and Marinette Dupain-Cheng, from Ms. Bustier's class!" Everyone shouted excitedly. "The stage is all yours." He said to them when he handed the microphone to Marinette.
Adrien, Chloe and Sabrina already had microphones in their hands.
The melody started and Marinette, along with the three of them, headed for the stairs that led to the dance floor. The light following in their footsteps.
La-la, la-la, la
They leaned against the railing, posing. Marinette first, Adrien behind her, Sabrina next and Chloe at the top.
Yeah, it's been a long night and the mirror's telling me to go home (go home)
Marinette started to sing, her voice rocking everyone in the club watching her and the three friends doing backing vocals.
But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own (uh)
She ran a hand over her bare belly before going up to her hair, pushing it out of the way. Marinette was breathtaking.
Lotta years went by With my hands tied up in your ropes (your ropes) Forever and ever, no more (no more)
Marinette rocked her hips to the side, shaking her head in denial and the other three did the same, but Lila's focus was only on Dupain-Cheng.
The midnight sky is the road I'm takin' Head high up in the clouds (oh, oh)
Her voice came raw, sensual. She slid while holding the railing of the stairs, never failing to move her hips. A wild glow in the eye.
I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no Don't need to be loved by you (by you)
She got up and the four started to sing together in what looked like the chorus.
Fire in my lungs Can't bite the Devil on my tongue, oh no Don't need to be loved by you
They started down the stairs slowly, still dancing to the melody of the song.
See my lips on her mouth Everybody's talkin' now, baby Ooh, you know it's true (yeah, yeah)
It was then that Marinette, for the first time in months, looked directly at Lila. To Lila and Alya, who was shaking next to the Italian.
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no Don't need to be loved by you (loved by you)
She raised her hand and with her finger, signaled a 'no' before winking at them and looking away again. Lila was having trouble assimilating everything.
La-la, la-la, la
They reached the dance floor, everybody making room.
She got her hair pulled back 'Cause the sweat's drippin' off of her face (her face) Said, "It ain't so bad if I wanna make a couple mistakes"
Side by side, they waved their hands in front of their faces as if they were hot.
You should know right now that I never stayed put in one place Forever and ever, no more (no more)
They started to walk in a circle, looking at each person around them and smiling.
Marinette took the lead again.
The midnight sky is the road I'm takin' Head high up in the clouds (oh, oh)
Her voice was raw, resonating through Lila's body like a charm.
I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no Don't need to be loved by you (by you)
The four returned to stand side by side, to sing together.
Fire in my lungs Can't bite the Devil on my tongue, oh no Don't need to be loved by you
Adrien turned to Chloe and Marinette turned to Sabrina, her back to Adrien. They approached, so close that any mistakes Marinette and Sabrina could bump each other's mouths.
See my lips on her mouth Everybody's talkin' now, baby Ooh, you know it's true (yeah)
Lila felt the hatred burn in the pit of her stomach, disgusted by the intimacy that Sabrina - the same girl who had scorned everyone with Chloe for years - had with Marinette, while she only had a quick look and worst, she had to share with Alya.
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no Don't need to be loved by you (by you)
They moved away from each other and started walking on the dance floor, messing with people. Marinette getting closer and closer to her.
Until she stopped in front of Lila.
Oh I don't hide, blurry eyes like you
And sang to her. Directly to her. Marinette inches from her. If Lila reached out, she could touch Mari's skin again.
Like you
Marinette looked up at someone - Alya - behind her for a moment, before leaving again.
The meaning in the letter does not go unnoticed by either.
I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no I don't need to be loved by you (by you)
They walked on the dance floor again singing and dancing together.
Fire in my lungs Can't bite the Devil on my tongue, oh no Don't need to be loved by you
Marinette approached someone, the same guy as before, the one she was sitting on the lap. He was a few people away from Lila, but even with the distance, she was able to see the way his eyes were dark with possessiveness.
He advanced, being pulled by Marinette, before she turned her back to him making him embrace her.
See his hands 'round my waist Thought you never be replaced, baby Ooh, you know it's true (yeah)
Lila saw his hands go over Marinette's hips, the comfortable way he hid his face in her neck and the swing of her hips against his. As if it were normal for them.
Jealousy was burning again in Lila's chest.
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no Don't need to be loved by you (yeah)
Marinette looked up, meeting Lila's. The lyrics of the song were like a knife in her skin.
La-la, la-la, la, la-la
She saw Marinette turn around in his arms and kiss him. Slowly and deeply, completely oblivious to the screams of the audience.
You know it's true, you know it's true Loved by you
The others finished singing the song and with the end of the song, the hope that Marinette would return to her died.
But Lila would make her regret that.
▫▪▪
"MARI, I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD SING!" Kori shouted over the applause.
"I didn't know the three of you sang." Conner commented in surprise.
"I think everything they do comes out well." Jon snorted.
"Thanks, guys." Marinette laughed sheepishly. It was still difficult to receive so much praise.
"You sang like a Rockstar, Bugnette." Jason raised his hand and she hit a hi-five.
"That's why I always invite her to be part of my music." Luka laughed; arms wrapped around Adrien.
"Damian doesn't seem happy about it at all." Tim commented, looking at his sullen brother.
"Oh no. He's like that because you interrupted us four times tonight.” Marinette replied.
"I'm surprised he hasn't tried to kill us yet." Dick laughed.
After the group of friends finished singing, they were approached by friends excited by the show. Damian getting annoyed at being interrupted for the third time that night.
Chloe had kissed Kagami, Adrien jumped into Luka's arms, Sabrina and Félix having a moment; but when Damian tried to monopolize Marinette, his family appeared to interrupt them.
"It’s because I’m without my katana here, otherwise I would have already killed you."
"Uh-oh here comes trouble." Adrien looked over Marinette's shoulder and she feared what it was about, but she turned nonetheless.
And for sure. There was a problem.
Alya, Lila and the entire class, even a constipated-looking Nino, walking up to them.
"And here they come wanting to be humiliated again." Sabrina shook her head in disbelief.
When the class reached them, Marinette was able to notice Alya's murderous look at Damian, as Lila had a smug smile on her face and Nathaniel's apologetic look.
"Good night, Marinette." Lila greeted, the fake sweet tone already taking Mari's patience.
"So, it's him, huh." Alya snarled, Nino looked like he was about to cry.
"He...?" Damian frowned.
"You must be Marinette's boyfriend." Lila doesn’t answer the unspoken question. "My name is Lila Rossi; it is a pleasure to finally meet you." She raised her hand to him, but he didn't react. Still looking at the group with contempt.
"Damian." He replied dryly.
The two had a silent dispute to face.
"Ah- hi, Juleka!" Adrien waved at the girl and she looked away, refusing to wave back. Luka had a sad gleam in his eyes.
Juleka was not part of the group of people who attacked them verbally, but she also remained neutral, since Rose really believed in the bullshit that Lila told. She didn't want to become a pariah of the class like Marinette, and it hit the Couffaine siblings hard.
Which got worse with the discovery that Jagged was Luka's father and that Luka was leaving Kitty Section to live with him in Gotham.
Juleka never forgave him for it and blamed Adrien for supporting Luka's departure
"So, it was with you that Marinette cheated on Alya, huh." Alix said without caring about anything.
"You aren’t that great." Kim looked analytically at Damian and Marinette felt Damian exhale heavily.
"Who said that?" Marinette asked Alix.
Ivan raised an eyebrow at her. "It's common knowledge that you cheated on Alya, Marinette."
"Don't act innocent!" Alya shouted. "I can't believe you exchanged a year of relationship to be with this... ugh."
Chloe stepped forward to defend her friends, but Marinette stopped her.
"Alya, whether you believe it or not, I never cheated on you." She said calmly.
Alya scoffed. "It seems to me that you got over it really fast, since you were exchanging spit with this one."
Marinette blew out an incredulous breath. “We broke up almost three years ago, Alya. Did you really think I was going to be single forever?”
Max frowned upset. "People who can't stay faithful shouldn't be dating."
"I agree with you, Max. I'm glad I was never unfaithful." Marinette responded as calmly as she could at that moment.
"You should have more compassion for other people, Marinette." Lila decided to get involved. "Knowing that Alya would be hurt to see you being cozy with your... boyfriend." A false expression of concern on her face.
She looked at the Italian, her face blank. Lila hadn't noticed the opening she left for Marinette.
"What are you talking about, Lila?" She asked, confusion on her face. "You didn't seem concerned about Alya when we dated for six months after she broke up with me."
Alya turned to face Lila, surprised by Marinette's words. The class was in the same state.
"What are you talking about, Marinette?" Rose asked, shock clear in her expression.
“Lila, after Alya broke up with me, came to me offering a shoulder to cry. She stayed by my side while I tried to forget about Alya and in the end, we started dating.”
"YOU WHAT?!" Alya snarled.
Marinette tilted her head. "I thought you told them, Lila."
Lila's eyes were wide, not knowing what to say.
“But why would Lila date you, if she was the one who said you were cheating on Alya? It doesn't make sense.” Nino pointed.
"Maybe because Marinette never cheated on Alya and Lila lied to you about everything." Felix replied.
Alya shook her head in denial. "This has to be a lie, because if it's true..."
"... If true, you broke up with your girlfriend just so that Lila would have the opportunity to date her." Nathaniel commented, a devilish smile on his lips.
"It's a lie, guys!" Lila shouted. "She's just saying that to mess you!"
Alya stopped shaking her head, considering Lila's words.
"I have proof." Marinette said and Lila stiffened. “But it doesn't matter anymore. Today is the last day I have to see you, so it makes no difference whether you believe me or not.”
"Last day?" Lila asked curiously.
"Yeah. I'm going to live in Gotham with these losers here.” And he pointed to the batfam, superboys - even if they were from Metropolis -, alien, amazon and the miraculous team behind her. "Today is our farewell." She shrugged.
"Oh." Alya sighed.
Lila didn't like what she heard. Angry again.
"So what? You are leaving just like this? Are you going to leave me to live with this nobody?! "
Damian snarled. "What did you call me?!"
"Damian." Marinette said and he stepped back. “And yes, Lila. I will leave just like this. I owe you no satisfaction from what I do or don't do. You decided to lie to me and I decided that you would not be part of it.”
She picked up the jacket on the table and took Damian's hand. The party was over for her.
“I grew up and you should do the same. Goodbye."
Deciding to leave as soon as possible, Marinette did not wait for Lila's answer and pulled Damian away.
She was an adult now; teenage intrigues were no longer part of her daily life.
When the two reached the Moulin Rouge's sidewalk, Marinette turned to Damian.
"So, how about a tour in your hotel room?" She winked at him.
Damian smiled beatifically. "I thought you'd never ask."
Tikki was right. Waiting was worth it.
BONUS #1:
"Hey, Damian did you saw Ma- oh"
“Okay, this is it. Run Agreste.”
"But-"
"Shut up and run."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...!"
"LUKA HELP ME!!!"
BONUS #2:
Marinette picked up the phone, noting that there were two voicemail notifications.
She was surprised, since everyone who had that number was in the gardens enjoying Alfred's birthday party.
Marinette put the phone to her ear, curiosity eating at her.
"Hello, Mari?" She inhaled hard. How did Alya get her phone number? “Hi, it's me Alya, Alya Césaire. Hah of course you know who I am... You, uh, must be wondering how I got your number... I got it from Nathaniel. Don't be mad at him, please! I needed to talk to you, but it's like you moved to Narnia. You probably blocked me, hah.”
She felt tears prick her eyes. As much as Marinette held a grudge against Alya, she still missed the friendship they shared and hearing her voice like that was like putting salt in the wound.
“Mari- Marinette. I wanted to apologize. I'm sorry for everything.” Tears falling freely. “I know that just words won't undo everything I did or said to you, but I needed you to know that I regret everything. I loved you, I still love you, but I see that feeling has rotted and blossomed into the worst of me. You didn't deserve anything that we did for you. I want you to understand that I was stupid, childish and did not weigh the consequences of my actions, but that I am trying to improve-“ The signal for the end of the voicemail rang and Marinette immediately clicked on the second message.
“Sorry, I reached the time limit. Hah. After that night at the club, I came home and thought about everything a lot. Nino has been helping me daily and- I'm grateful Mari, because Nino was kind enough to forgive me for what I did. I think I'm really falling in love with him now that I'm not blinded by meanness. Lila is no longer in Paris. I may have... left some videos at the Italian embassy for her mother to see and even if she is of age, some things would be really harmful for Ms. Rossi at the embassy, so the two left Paris. The last thing I heard was that she was arrested for stalking a girl from university she was attending. Anyway. I thank Mari, for being my best friend, my girlfriend. I love you. Bye." The finishing beep rang again and Marinette put the phone down.
The tears came down salty, wetting the beautiful fabric of her summer dress. She felt light, relieved as if a heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
Marinette knew it would take her a while to actually talk to Alya, but deep down she knew she had already forgiven the girl for everything.
"Mari?" She heard Damian's voice and the silent footsteps on the wooden floor.
She quickly wiped away her tears, trying to compose herself. "I'm here, Dames."
He entered the room worried. Her voice seemed unsteady. "Hey-" Damian stopped, observing the state she was in and ran to her side on the bed. "What happened, habibit?"
Marinette pressed her forehead against his, a shy smile on her lips. "I'm fine, love." Damian put his arm around her, pulling the girl onto his lap. "Really. I'm fine. No need to worry."
Damian kissed her lips tenderly. "Of course I worry. I will always worry about you.”
She pulled him in again for a kiss. Longer, but no less sweet.
"I love you, Damian Wayne."
"I love you, Marinette Dupain-Cheng."

So, about Bi Caleb
Warning: very long post, discussing bi representation and biphobia.
*Sorry for spelling errors, English ain’t my firts language.
I can’t believe I have to tell you guys, but anyways: Caleb is bi whether he ends with a male character, a female character on a non binary character. That’s what bi people do, you know? they experience atraction for all genders. Saying that a bi character that ends with someone of the opposite gender is straight and queerbaiting is incredibly biphobic.
Yes, Vax was bisexual. Yes, he ended up with Kiki. Get fucking over it.
Now, I can understand why LGBT+ fans may feel disappointed when they tease a “gay couple” but the “straigth” couple ends up being endgame. Notice the quotation marks because there’s not such thing as a straight or gay couple for a bi person. They are bisexual in both situations, but I can see where the problem comes from. I’ve been queerbaited to hell and back by a lot of shows and it really hurts. It feels like they are laughting at you for caring. But I want those fans (whose feelings are totally valid, don’t get me wrong) to consider a few things when it comes to Critical Role, the first one being: it’s a D&D game.
Let me explain, because I know a lot of CR fans haven’t experienced what D&D is like in real life (and that’s absolutely valid, you don’t need to play D&D to enjoy CR). This is an improvisation game, not an scripted TV show. In a Tv show you can plan ahead of time what ship is going to be endgame, what themes are gonna come up for each character and it’s easier to deeply explore sexuality and gender as different planned arcs. In D&D you character’s sexuality may or may not come up depending on how you play it. Take for instance how other CR character’s have stated their sexuality:
Beau: overtly. Very *In your face* kind of lesbian. Marisha said “fuck it, I really just want to romance girls and be bad ass”
Yasha: openly, but not as in your face. Ashley Jhonson wanted to drink from that WLW cup while also being a shy disaster. Seafood market is her favored terrain.
Caduceus: Our Ace king has never hidden his sexuality, and yet he didn’t mention anything about it until chapter 114. He didn’t had the need to either hide it or state it. He was simply vibing.
I think Liam is going that route with Caleb. He’s flustered by Essek and Edwulf (Come on you guys, he always asks Matthew if he’s still hot). He also had/has a thing for Astrid and a think he might have feels for our favorite Tiefling gal. I know we are all too used to characters being teased as gay/bi only to have execs pull a “haha jk they be straight”. But this is not Sherlock or Supernatural. This is a show that not only has queer rep, but also supports queer organizations and creators. Hell, I’m sure some of the cast members are LGBT (but I’m not here to speculate on real people’s sexuality). If Caleb shows attraction to men he is not just queerbaiting, doing it for fanservicing or tricking the fans in any way shape or form: he’s just portraying a bi character. The thing is, since this is not a TV show, he is not doing it por woke points or to send a message. He’s doing it because he wants to play a bi wizard with depression.
So maybe there will be a point in which he can explores his sexuality more deeply, but remember he is playing a game. And his character is one that has a lot of trouble opening up to his feelings. Caleb is not someone that makes sexual jokes or flirty remarks. He is shy, awkward and has developed a really fucked up sense of love that he is now slowly fixing. Hell, in the same Talks episode Liam explained that Caleb was trained on Honey-pot tactics. Which, for those of you who can’t stand Bond films, means seducing your enemy/target to get information, manipulate them or assassinate them. WHICH IS A REALLY FUCKED UP THING! Let’s remember how he was the one to push Fjord to sleep with Advantica so they could spy on her. That boy has Issues when it comes to relationships. So if we don’t see him being as overtly gay as Beau, Molly or Yasha, well maybe it’s because that’s the way Caleb is. Bi people don’t owe you flamboyance, or dating both guys and gals for your approval. I wouldn’t make a post if it was only that, because I do feel the people who are aching for good bi rep and would love some more explicit confirmation. But Vax exists, so I know we can’t have good things down here.
VAX EXPLICITELY SHOWED ATTRACTION TO GILMORE. AS EXPLICIT AS IT GETS. HE FUCKING KISSED HIM. THEY WERE PRACTICALLY DATING. AND YET SOME OF YOU FUCKERS CALL HIM QUEERBAITING. AND I SAY: NOT ON MY WATCH! NOT ON MY FUCKING WATCH!!
How come a character can have canonically kissed another character in a romantic/sensual context and still be called straight? I know fucking Sherlock traumaticed y’all into having trust issues but believe me when I tell you: I’ts not that deep. This is not a “Haha I love u but in a no homo way bro”. It’s a “full homo darling, but also we’re gonna break up because I like someone else”. This is the opposite of queerbaiting. Instead of keeping a charade he was honest with Gilmore because he valued his feelings and realized that he couldn’t reciprocate them at that moment. And if you try to tell me that Vaxleth was forced and didn’t have a reason to exist except queerbaiting, let me tell you: you are wrong.
Vax saw Gilmore once or twice monthly while he spent a heck ton of time with Kiki. Sure, they didn’t had the kind of camera chemistry Gilmore and Vax had because Keyleth is not charismatic. She’s really awkward, and her relationship with Vax was more on the adorable and dorky side of things. I bring this up because I’m predicting something similar may happen to Shadowgast.
Trust me, I ship the hot wizards as much as any other critter (even though I’m a multishipper). But they haven’t talked to Essek in centuries. I think it may have been almost a month in rol and quite a few outside. And you have to take into account out-rol time to because they are humans (except Tal) playing a game and they forget about stuff (except Marisha and Matt). So Shadowgast may not happen because sure, they had really good chemistry for a month a month ago. People have crushes that die down over time All The Time. So maybe don’t be so butthurt about your ship not being canon that you accuse an ally of homophobia.
The cast of CR put forward such an amazing representation for the LGBT+ community and it really hurts me that you gets stuck on the one thing that isn’t canon. Matt has created a world in which coming out is not necessary because no one assumes your sexuality. A world in which people respect pronouns and orientations (except Tary’s father, who is a villain). A world in which Cad or Caleb don’t need to explicitly say “I’m ace/bi” unless it comes up in conversation. A world in which his friends can be whatever they want to be without pressure or reprecusions. A world in which they get to explore different gender identities and sexual orientations with full freedom. Let’s not interfere with that (unless there’s missrepresentation), and let them play their game. If you really need mlm or wlw canon couples or more outwardly LGBT+ people you have plenty examples among NPCs and other cast members (Allura and kima, Yasha, Beau, Dairon, Keg, Reani, Tary, Molly and Vax among others).
There’s way worst shows taking LGBT+ cred for barely doing nothing. Fucking Supernatural is the most recent example! Critical Role works towards showing an honest portrayal of LGBT+ folk and accepts valid criticism from their fans on the subject (when they changed J’Mon Sa Ord pronouns from it to they/them). They don’t owe you making your ship canon or portraying their characters the way you want them to (again, unless when it’s constructive criticism). Stop being so Fucking entitled and enjoy the show for what it is
,Respectfully~
*Edit: I´m tagging Caleb’s ships into the post because most hate comes from shipping wars. Most Shadowgast fans are respectful of the cast’s decisions, even if it disappoints them. But since I’ve already seen people accusing Liam of biphobia in that tag and since I’ve already seen this shit with Vaxmore I’m tagging the ship. If you want to read my long ass post do it, if not, ignore it. I’m not forcing you to read it. I’ve also tagged it with biphobia so people can avoid it if it’s triggering. I’m sorry if it makes you mad that your ship is not canon, but that’s not an excuse to be toxic to the cast. Those of you getting mad are the ones that need to read this the most. Like I’ve said in the post: you’re allowed to be disappointed, you are allowed to want more, but you can’t force the cast to give you exactly what you want. And most certainly, you can’t accuse them of  some very serious stuff like biphobia and queerbaiting when it’s not the case..

Light Up the Ice - 12
Summary: Aelin Galathynius has never really been into sports. Yes, she likes to keep in shape, and she works out, but watching people run up and down a field, trying to keep a leather ball away from each other? It’s always seemed a bit childish to her, and decidedly NOT a way for a grown adult to make a living.
Rowan Whitethorn has recently been drafted by the Terresen Staghorns, one of best teams in the EHL (Erilean Hockey League). And since he moved to Terresen from Wendlyn, it’s been hard for him to get more than 30 seconds alone from someone demanding a picture with him. Getting drafted straight out of college wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, but he’s not complaining. Until he accidentally meets a girl. More specifically, until he accidentally meets his neighbor. She seems to have no idea who he is and for some reason, that’s refreshing. But will she still want to be with him once he shows her the truth?

A/N: No tag list tonight. This is the 3rd time I've tried to post this chapter and every single time, it's crashed before I can post or save. AKA I’m about to punch my computer and don’t want to push my luck anymore. Next chapter, I will be copying and pasting my old tag list, deleting the inactive blogs, and adding those who have asked. Enjoy!

It never failed to amaze Aelin how slow business got when the university took their breaks. It was only the second day of the University of Terrasen’s fall break and she’d already had enough spare time to reorganize the stock room, deep clean the kitchen and now, she was sitting at a table in the corner, staring at a print out of her menu.
She chewed on the end of her pen and then drew a line through another item. In the four years she’d had the café, she’d never changed a single menu item. It wasn’t that anyone was complaining about her food, but she was bored with it and wanted to add some new variety. She scribbled some notes in the margin of new recipes she wanted to try to replace the old ones, but the sound of the bell above the door distracted her. She was beaming before she even got out of her chair.
“Hey,” she said, approaching Rowan and Lorcan, pressing a kiss to the cheek of the former and keeping her distance from the former. “How was practice?”
“Good. Save for the fact that I’m still sitting on the bench,” Rowan said, sighing. “Coach said I can be on the ice from now on, as long as I’m still not running drills and agree to see the trainer every day.”
“That’s great,” she said, smiling. “You hungry?”
“Yes, please,” he replied, a lopsided grin on his face.
She headed for the cash register Elide had been sitting at a few moments before. She was now working on rolling silverware father down the counter, quietly humming along to the music that played in the café. “You want the grilled cheese and tomato soup again?”
“Please,” he said, smiling. He turned to his friend and asked, “You want the Reuben, Lor?”
Lorcan didn’t reply. He was staring back towards the door.
Back towards Elide.
“Lorcan?” Rowan said, again, finally getting his teammates’ attention.
“Reuben, yeah, sounds great,” he mumbled, pulling out his wallet.
“Lunch is on me,” Aelin said, eyeing him, not liking the way he turned back to glance at Elide.
She didn’t like the way Elide was sneaking glances at him either.
As she walked behind the counter, Aelin cleared her throat, making Elide jump, her fingers dropping the silverware in which she held. It clattered against the counter.
“Care to give me a hand?” Aelin asked.
Elide blinked. “It’s just two sandwiches-.”
“If the bell rings, you can come back out,” Aelin said, taking Elide by the wrist and dragging her back toward the kitchen. She called back to Rowan and Lorcan, “Make yourselves comfortable!”
Once in the kitchen, Aelin dropped Elide’s wrist and began with the sandwiches.
Elide watched her friend, her boss, skeptically. “Care to tell me what that was about?”
“You were practically drooling over him,” Aelin said, raising an eyebrow as she looked at Elide.
Elide’s cheeks darkened and she hurried around to the other side of the kitchen to get Rowan’s soup. “I was not.”
“You definitely were,” Aelin replied, turning and dropping the grilled cheese on top of the griddle. She may have put more cheese on than she would have for a regular customer and melty, delicious goodness dripped out the surface of the cooktop.
Elide was standing in the alley of the kitchen, looking back through the serving window at Aelin. “And…? So what if I was? He’s hot.”
Aelin fought the urge to roll her eyes. “He’s a hockey player, El. Rowan has told me about how he spends his away games.”
Elide was quiet as she put the soup in the window to stay warm as Aelin finished their sandwiches. If her friend and boss’s back hadn’t been facing her, she probably wouldn’t have had the courage to say, “Wow, Ace, be careful. Your hypocrisy is showing.”
She whirled, pointing a spatula at Elide. “That’s a completely different situation and you know it.”
Elide lifted a brow. “Do I?”
Aelin’s lips thinned. “Yes, you do. At least, you should. Rowan and I… it’s different.”
“If you would have known he was a hockey player, you would’ve never started seeing Rowan,” Elide went on, trying to hide both her frustration and amusement. “The fact that Lorcan plays hockey is all you can see when you look at him.”
Aelin scoffed. “Wrong. All I can see is his jackassery.”
“Jackassery?”
“It’s a word,” Aelin snapped, flipping over the sandwich on the griddle. “And, again, Rowan has told me about his post game activities when they’re on the road.”
“It doesn’t make a difference, I don’t know why you’re even upset about it,” Elide muttered, coming around to the salad station and popping a cucumber slice in her mouth. “He’s Lorcan Salvaterre. He’s the captain of the team. He dates bikini models and actresses. I’m just a broke college student. I’m just…me.”
Aelin’s eyes softened as she turned to one of her oldest friends. “That’s not true, Elide. You are a phenomenal, beautiful, smart woman, and anyone who doesn’t see that is blind. Including yourself.”
Elide’s cheeks darkened, slightly, as she tried to fight the smile growing. “I’m going to go finish my silverware. Holler if you need me.”
Aelin nodded and watched as she pushed through the swinging door to the dining room. She finished up the sandwiches before grabbing Rowan’s soup and carrying them out front.
While she and Elide had been in the kitchen, Fenrys had appeared, a fast food bag open in front of him. She chuckled as she sat down Rowan and Lorcan’s food. “You know I would have cooked for you.”
His mouth was full of a massive bite of hamburger, so Lorcan answered for him. “He also knows coach would kick his ass if he knew he was eating that. Yet he does it anyway.”
“It’s so good,” Fenrys said, his mouth still full, his manners shot. “What coach doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”
Rowan snorted. “Tell yourself that when you feel like shit once the grease sets in.”
Lorcan stared at his sandwich for a long moment. Then, he mumbled, “Thank you.”
Aelin blinked. Even Rowan looked nearly surprised.
“Did you just thank me?” Aelin asked, perfectly still.
Lorcan didn’t say anything else as he bit into his sandwich.
A few more people trickled in and Aelin got back to work, the shock of Lorcan’s almost-kindness still shocking her. The dinner rush, even though slower with the college campus dwindled, still kept her and Elide busy, and by the time eight rolled around, Aelin was ready to close up.
Rowan, Lorcan, and Fenrys remained at the corner table.
Elide came out of the kitchen, having grabbed her purse and coat from Aelin’s office. “I’m gonna head home, if there’s nothing else you need me to do.”
Aelin shook her head. “Nope, you’re all set. Have a good night.”
“You, too,” Elide said, smiling, and Aelin noticed that her eyes slid to the table again, before she turned and was out the door, heading around the building to the small lot behind the café.
As she approached the table, Lorcan was standing and shrugging his jacket on. “Thanks for dinner. It was good.”
Aelin was still stunned by his niceties earlier that his words barely registered. “You’re welcome, I’m glad you liked it. I guess I’ll keep it on the menu.”
“You heading out, man?” Fenrys asked, finishing off the large plate of fries he’d ordered after his burger and first order of fries was gone.
“Yeah. Got some stuff I gotta take care of.” He said nothing else, but headed for the door.
Turning towards Rowan, Aelin tried to keep her expression in check as she realized that he, too, was heading for the back lot. Rowan, not fooled by her attempts, held his hands up in surrender. “I’m not getting involved.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “I don’t like it.”
“Like what?” Fenrys asked, and Aelin rolled her eyes as she took his plate and headed towards the kitchen.
“I’ve gotta lock up,” she called out over her shoulder. “I’ll see you at home. I love you.”
“Love you, too, sweet cheeks!” Fenrys called out.
Even through the swinging door, Aelin heard Rowan smack him on the back of the head.
****************
Rowan skated around the ice.
He was bored shitless, not even in his hockey gear, but sweatpants and a hoodie. His hands were shoved into his pant pockets as he circled the rink, close to the sideboards. The constant blow of the whistle was the only thing keeping him awake.
He didn’t even bother asking if he could practice, even though he felt up to it. He already knew what the answer would be.
And yet, he longed for practice to last. When it was over, he’d have to make his way into the locker room for Maeve.
And he was not prepared.
He’d felt her eyes on him since the moment he hit the ice, yet he hadn’t looked over at her once. Dorian was thankfully on the other end of the rink, so as he skated by at the beginning of practice, he was able to flag him down.
“Hey, man, how are you feeling?” Dorian asked, leaning on the half wall separating them.
“Much better, like it never happened,” he said, and the lie was barely there.
Dorian quirked an eyebrow and snorted. “Good try. You can’t practice today.”
“No, I get it, I understand that.” Roan cleared his throat. “But, uh, is there a different massage therapist I can see?”
Dorian blinked. “Did something happen with Maeve the other day? She didn’t mention anything-.”
“She’s my ex,” Rowan interrupted.
Dorian hesitated before nodding, slowly. “I see.”
“You can massage me,” Rowan said, quickly.
“As flattered as I am, I’m not a massage therapist,” Dorian chuckled. “I can talk to-.”
“No, don’t…tell anyone. If you don’t know of anyone, it’s fine,” Rowan said, the words rushing out of him.
“Look, I don’t know Maeve very well,” Dorian began, shaking his head. “But, she seems perfectly fine, alright? Has it been a while since you’ve been together?”
Rowan gave him a curt nod.
“Then give her a chance to be civil,” Dorian said, shrugging. “If she’s disrespectful, let me know. Otherwise, I have no reason to think she won’t do her job appropriately, and if she doesn’t, then you can leave.”
He sighed, nodding, and skated off.
He spent the next two hours dreading every minute that passed.
He heard Brello’s whistle blow and slowly glided across the ice, coming to a stop next to his line.
“Everyone was looking good today,” he said, looking at them one by one. “Take it easy tonight. The boys from Eyllwe aren’t going to go easy on us tomorrow night, especially since we’ll be in their territory. I want all of you in your best form.” He gestured to Rowan. “Whitethorn will be back on the ice next week.”
There were cheers and hollers from the team and Rowan couldn’t help but smirk as Lorcan shoved him.
Brello, to everyone’s surprise, smirked as well. “Hope you’ve enjoyed your time off, but relaxation time is over. You ready to go?”
“Aye, coach,” he replied, nodding.
“That’s what I like to hear.”
After a couple more announcements from the coaching staff, everyone was skating towards the locker rooms of the practice facility and Rowan felt like his nerves were going to snap.
He took his time removing his skates and grabbing his bag, before slowly walking down the hall leading to the training rooms. He was silently praying Dorian would be in his office, right off to the side of the therapy room, but he wasn’t.
There was only one room with a light on, and with a deep breath, he approached and knocked on the half-open door.
Maeve looked over her shoulder with a smile. “Come in, I’m ready for you.”
Rowan hesitated, but went in. Dorian was right. Maybe she had changed, maybe there was nothing to worry about.
Yet Rowan felt nauseous as he approached the blanket covered table.
“I’ll give you a minute to strip down and be back.” She left without another word, shutting the door behind her.
Rowan stared at the door before kicking off his shoes then lifting his shirt over his head. He only hesitated for a moment before kicking off his sweats and laying down on the table, pulling the blanket up to his waist.
A soft knock informed him of her approach, and he grunted to let her know he was ready.
When the door reopened, the lights suddenly dimmed and Rowan awkwardly shifted on the massage table.
Neither of them spoke for a few minutes. Rowan was grinding his teeth as she worked on the muscle in his lower back that kept spasming when she said, “I have to say, I was surprised to see you the other day. Dorian hadn’t told me who I would be working on, but…” She paused and chuckled quietly, running her hands up his back.
Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
When Rowan was drafted into the EHL, it had been a pretty big deal in his city, but more specifically, his university. He’d dropped out of school to accept the offer from the lower level team and climb his way to where he was. And everyone in Wendlyn knew.
There was no way Maeve didn’t know he was playing for Terrasen when she took the job.
He gave her a small nod and a quiet noise that said he was listening. She kept going, taking that as a sign he was interested in the conversation.
“I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve seen you,” she sighed. “Things ended so...abruptly. I’m glad to see your doing good.” Another chuckle. “Save for the injury, of course.”
It was so strange to hear another accent from Wendlyn that was still somewhat fresh. Lorcan, Gav and Fenrys, they’d been in Terrasen so long, the accent almost disappeared sometimes. But the lilt of her tone, the way she phrased certain words… It both soothed and unsettled Rowan.
“Don't you care to know how I’ve been?” She asked, her voice low. When Rowan didn’t reply, she continued on, anyway. “I’ve been pretty good. Got myself a little place in the city. A dog. Little chihuahua named Fiona.”
Rowan blinked. He was tempted to say that he hadn’t asked, but she didn’t seem to mind.
“I’ve got some pretty wealthy clients, too,” she continued, continuing to work out that knot. “For the first time in ages, I’m secure, you know? Not just financially, just…secure.”
“Good to hear,” he replied, the words sounding more like a snarl through the pain, and she dug her knuckles into his back. The sound he made was halfway between a moan and a groan, he bit his lip to cut it off, but he noted the change in the way Maeve’s hands touched him.
Her touches became less like determined movements meant to heal and were more akin to petting, brushes along his side and a slow finger down his spine.
“And you?” She asked, pulling the blanket a bit lower on his back. He’d worn underwear for just that reason, not trusting her to not make an inappropriate move. “Are you living in Orynth?”
He cleared his throat and said, “Yep. Got an apartment down the road from the university.”
His answer was short and sweet. He wasn’t trying to invite more conversation.
“Not far from me then,” she replied, humming quietly.
Rowan’s shoulders tensed, but that just made her want to ease it away. His eyes closed and he remained quiet.
“What about your personal life?” Maeve asked, at last.
Rowan didn’t answer, he just took a deep breath.
“Not trying to pry,” Maeve said, at last. “Just trying to make conversation.”
“I’m in pain,” he said, gently, the lie coming out easy. “Not really in a mood to make conversation.”
He could have sworn he felt the temperature in the room drop several degrees.
Her answer was curt. “Sorry.”
She stayed quiet for the rest of the massage, and when she finished, she told him to get redressed and left, heading back out into the main training facility.
He emerged a few moments later, pulling the hood of his sweatshirt over his silver hair. He was already heading for the door, giving her a nod of thanks, when she spoke up.
“Rowan, wait.”
He hated hearing his name on her lips. His steps slowed and he turned around to look at her.
She hesitated slightly, but said, “I was going to go get dinner in a little bit. It’s been a while, I didn’t know if maybe you-.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Mae,” he sighed. The familiar nickname slipped out before he had time to stop it. It caught him off guard. “I- I gotta get home. I’ll see you later.”
Rowan had grabbed his bag and was out the door before she had time to say another word
****************
Aelin was at the stove, stirring a pot of homemade marinara sauce and humming quietly along with the radio when Rowan unlocked the door to her apartment and came in. Glancing over her shoulder, she smiled at him before turning back to the cooktop. “Hey, you. How was practice?”
“My new massage therapist is my ex.”
The words came out in a rush and Rowan wasn’t even sure he consciously knew he had planned on saying them.
Aelin’s back stiffened and she set the wooden spoon on the trivet beside the stove. Silently, she turned and asked, “Your ex-girlfriend is giving you massages?”
Rowan closed his eyes and took a deep breath before nodding. “Before you say anything-.”
“Did this just start today?” she asked. Her tone held no judgement, only curiosity. However, there was a slight edge to her tone.
“She gave me the massage in my apartment-.”
Aelin held up a hand, and Rowan’s words instantly fell into silence.
Silence, where the room remained for far too long. “Aelin-.”
“Who is she?” Aelin asked, one brow raised. “I’ll kick her ass.”
“Her name is Maeve,” he said, making his way into the kitchen. He leaned against the counter. “She was my girlfriend in college. We dated for a couple of years, but… It didn’t end well. It became more about who I was in hockey, how I was playing, than it was about our relationship.”
“Maeve,” Aelin repeated, turning back to the stove. “Maeve, Maeve, Maeve… Hmm.”
Rowan was quiet, not exactly sure what to say.
“And you have to see her? You don’t have a choice?” She finally asked.
He shook his head. “Brello told me to get over my personal issues. I’m sure I can book a personal masseuse, but-.”
“No, your coach is right,” she sighed, stirring the pot, before putting the lid on and walking over to where Rowan stood. She wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him. “I don’t like it, but… that isn’t really my call to make.”
Rowan let out a relieved breath. “I know, it’s not mine either. Maybe you can give me massages here to help?” He smirked and, finally, Aelin’s beautiful smile returned.
“We’ll see,” she chuckled, leaning up to press a kiss to his lips. “Looks like I’ll just have to come to your games and make my presence known.”
“Make your presence known?” He crooned.
“I like to mark my territory,” Aelin breathed, her eyes bright.
“And I’m your territory?” Rowan grinned.
“Whether you like it or not,” Aelin said, laughing softly. “Yes, you are.”
“Hmmm,” Rowan said, narrowing his eyes. “I can’t say that I don’t like that.”
He leaned down and kissed her one more time before asking, “So you aren’t mad?”
She stepped away, back to the stove, and said, “No, I’m not mad.” She paused and pulled a few spices from the cupboard. “Do I like it? Of course not, but there’s not much we can do about it.”
“Once I finish up this round of therapy, I won’t need it again,” he promised. “No more fights, no more getting slammed into the boards. I won’t have to see her anymore.”
Aelin laughed as she turned back to him. “You can’t make that promise, who’s to say what could happen?”
Rowan cringed. “That’s true. No more fighting though, I mean that.”
Aelin nodded, and he could tell she believed him.
He took a step closer and brushed her hair back. “You look beautiful.”
Aelin’s lips quirked as she said, “Trying to kiss my ass to get back on my good side?”
“Maybe,” he muttered, and kissed her forehead, softly. “Is it working?”
“Hmmm,” Aelin began, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Not yet, keep trying.”
Rowan’s grin widened as he leaned down and pressed his mouth to hers. “Now?”
Aelin sighed. “Getting there.”
“Only getting there, huh?” He breathed, his lips still brushing hers.
“I guess you’re going to have to step your game up,” Aelin cooed, slipping her hands down his back and into the waistband of his sweatpants.
Rowan’s grin was positively feline as he picked her up and carried her back into her bedroom.
Dinner was forgotten about for quite a while.
